Speaker 1 (00:00):
We do have some news to get to. If you're
a Mariner fan, this is very important. The Tigers have won.
They are on the way to Seattle for Game one
on Saturday of the American League Division Series. They've never
played the Mariners in the postseason, obviously, first time ever
against the Tigers, so for long time Mariner fans like us,
kind of cool, I guess to see a new matchup.

(00:21):
They played the Guardians, as you guys know, way back
in two thousand and one and a crazy five game series,
almost lost. They had to come back and win it
with Jamie Moyer on the mound in game five. I
remember Game four, Edgar hitting that crazy home run to
left field. The win was blowing like mad and they
finally got it done to move on to the Alcs.
But the Tigers are coming to town and Trek Skubell,

(00:45):
the local boy, coming to town to face the Mariners
for the third time this year. The M's are two
to zero against him, and that's what freaks me out right.
That's the kind of stuff I think about, guys. Right
now during the playoffs. We're sitting here with a couple
of days to go before Game one, and Dick Bird
would always use this term that when you have too
much time to think about something, what do you get?

(01:07):
You get paralysis by analysis. And I might be totally
paralyzed by the way by Saturday afternoon before Game one,
because I got all this stuff running through my brain.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Can we beat Scooble again? We might have to beat
them four times for crying out loud to make the
next round.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
But look four and two against Detroit, And I'm kind
of with you and kind of with Jackson that I
was rooting for the Guardians to win in this series,
but it wasn't an overwhelming thing for me. I feel
like if the Mariners play their best baseball, they should
be able to handle whoever comes their way in the
first or the second round of the American League Division Series.
But you're talking about facing maybe the best picture in baseball,

(01:45):
and when you face a team with the best picture
in baseball, nothing's guaranteed, big boys.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Well, I watch a lot of innings of this Cleveland
Detroit series, and the Seattle Mariners are a better baseball
team right now than both of these teams.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
There is no question about that at all.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
But the factor of Trek Scouble coming in, I shut
my eyes, and I can just envision him sticking it
up our tailpipe at least once, if not twice, And
that puts so much pressure on the rest of the
games where he's not pitching for you to be nearly
perfect in those other games. I'm not saying we're gonna
lose both games he pitches, but I think it's gonna

(02:22):
be really.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Hard to put crooked numbers on the board.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
And if you're gonna win those two games, you're probably
gonna have to win him two to one, three to
two and get elite starting pitching. That matches what Tarik
Schooble's able to put up there.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Well, that's what we've been all about though, really for
the last couple of years until recently, is elite pitching.
And that's what I think that Mariner fans should be
counting on. I mean, if I can't count on Logan
Gilbert and George Kirby and Luis Castillo and Brian wu
if he does pitch in this series, which we think
he's going to, we're thinking maybe Game three or Game four.

(02:56):
But if I can't count on that, then what are
we doing here? I mean, that's the way this team
was built. Yeah, right, that's this team's DNA is starting pitching.
It's the best thing that they've done over the last.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Three or four years. So obviously the offense has gotten better.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
They've added pieces, and the offense is a different animal
now than it was, maybe even just a couple months ago.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
We're three months ago. Definitely a different animal than it
was a year ago.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
But I've I've got to be able, Dick to wake
up on Saturday and count on whoever pitches in Game
one to pitch his balls off and to give us
a great shot to either have the lead or you know,
tied or down one and maybe a one nothing or
a two to one game. But that that guy's got
to be Superman. And I don't think that's too much
for Marion Defense to happen.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
No, it's not.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
And I feel like this series is going to be
incredibly low scoring. I think most. I mean, there'll be
an outlier game probably, but I just see three two four,
three two one all through this series, which means the
margins are so razor thin because they're going to be
games like that.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Well, I'm looking, look, guys, this is a thing, all right,
And I've been barking about this for years on the
radio station, that the baseball playoff tournament is the most
wide open thing that sports has to offer, right. I Mean,
maybe you can argue that Stanley Cup Finals, when you know,
a seventh seed or an eight seed win the whole thing, whatever,
But the baseball tournament, to me, generally over the years

(04:18):
that I've been a sports fan, is the most wide
open thing that sports can offer you, right, I mean,
I'm going back to twenty and twenty three, the two
teams in the World Series had the seventh and the
thirteenth most wins in baseball in Texas and Arizona. Twenty
twenty two, Philadelphia wins the entire thing with the eleventh
most wins in baseball. Twenty twenty one, the Braves had

(04:39):
the twelfth most wins in baseball with eighty eight. And
if you throw out twenty twenty because of COVID twenty nineteen,
the Nationals won the whole thing with the eighth moth.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Wins in baseball.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter come playoff time. And
you sent a text out to the group today about
what the Mariners did in two thousand and one offensively
in the regular season, versus the division series in the ALCS.
In both those series were five game series, right. I
guarantee you if you go back to the regular season,
well maybe not that team, but if you go back

(05:09):
to any disappointing offensive performance over a five or a
seven game series, you can find the same thing in
the regular season over a five or a seven game stretch.
But nobody notices, nobody cares, because it's not do or die.
I mean, this pitching staff comes out and pitches, you know,
terribly in the regular season.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Hey, it's just a bump in the row. Whatever, But
if they do that next week, we're done. It's over.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
We're cooked.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
The season's over, right, and you're walking out of their
massively disappointed. And what just happens. So this is what
makes the baseball playoffs great?

Speaker 2 (05:38):
Dude. I'm already getting freaking anxiety man, thinking about it.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Honestly, I went and got a damn stant in my
gut over the last couple of days. Thank god I
did that, because I might have had a heart attack
if I didn't get that thing cleaned up in the
last couple of days. This is gonna be balls to
the wall nerves for everybody on Saturday and Sunday. Imagine
if they lose Game one, how freaking big Game two
is gonna be? Game two then becomes a must win

(06:01):
for every against school. Yes, potentially, so game one is well.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
Yes, game one is massively important for Seattle, there's no question.
And and my my two wonders are is Detroit fixed
They've won for their last seven games, including beating Cleveland
three times, twice in the playoffs and once last week
in the regular season and the must have game to
get into the playoffs? Are they fixed? And is the

(06:27):
LA Dodgers series with the Mariners? Did it truly mean
absolutely nothing? Did it mean a little or did it
mean like, oh yeah, they truly did cool off the
Mariners a little bit. I've got no idea. I don't
think that it means a lot. I probably think that
the Detroit comeback means a little bit more than what
the Mariners did in the last three games against the
against LA. But I'm not looking at Detroit as a

(06:49):
cold ball team.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
No, not at all, not at all.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
I mean, they've got If you think that keeping in
rhythm is an advantage, then they've got it.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Yes, got the advantage over you.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
And to answer your question about the Dodgers reason, but
I generally don't think it's that relevant, to be honest
with you. There's also a part of me that thinks
that maybe it's a good thing, but if they approached
it as kind of an irrelevant thing, and I don't
have any idea what their mindset was like going in.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
I mean, the lineups for the most part.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Kind of reflected they were kind of backing off a
little bit given cal a couple of the DH days whatever,
so it was a little bit different starting Friday, I
thought with the way that they kind of behave with
their lineup, but if they really had the attitude behind
the scenes that, you know what, we just need to
get guys rested, then I'm not worried about it.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
And I'm not really worried about it to begin with.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
I think this is again, this is one of those
things that we talk about when we're sitting here having
a freaking week off before game one of the playoffs,
right when the Seahawks had to buy and you had
two weeks before game one, you just talked about everything
a nausea and had whatever, the same.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Stuff over and over and over and over again. NBA playoffs.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
Same thing that month between the Pac twelve championship and
the Texas game. Remember how ridiculous that was, Every stupid
little thing that didn't even really matter when it was
all said and done. We talked about at nauseum on
the air. It makes you sick thinking about how much
crap gets thrown out there. So I just wish that
somebody could come over here and knock me the hell
out and wake me up on Saturday, right at one

(08:13):
o'clock or five o'clock before first pitch, because I'm ready.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
I'm tired of talking about it. I want to play
the game.

Speaker 5 (08:18):
Well.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
I think it'd be an interesting question for Homegren when
we have them on because, as I recall two thousand
and five, I remember watching that game Agreen Bay in
the final week this season, I believe Hasselebeck and Alexander
played until halftime, right, I think that's right, right, and
then they didn't play in the second half. So it'll
be interesting to see what he thinks about res versus.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Right, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
All right, we're gonna break Rick new Heisel is gonna
join us next. Lots of stuff to get to with

Coach new Heusel with us now on the radio program, Rick,
how are you?

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Man?

Speaker 7 (09:54):
I am fine, but I hate this the doldrums. I'm
in with my picks. One in five is good enough.
We've got to turn this thing around, all right, worry
about it?

Speaker 2 (10:04):
It all right. You can't have a comeback unless you're starting.
How about that? Don't work?

Speaker 7 (10:11):
What's the song say? Don't call it a comeback? Yeah,
that's right, Right, that's right, don't call it a comeback.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
Hey, we got we got a lot of stuff to
talk about, man. But before we get to all that, uh,
let's talk about Jerry. Let's talk about the brand new
play caller for the uc LA Bruins.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
And you know him.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
Very very well. God, remember Jerry running around? He must
have been like, what two or three years old when
you were here taking you dep the rose ball and
I was calling plays at your alma mater.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
How about that?

Speaker 8 (10:38):
He is?

Speaker 7 (10:39):
He was seven when we came to Seattle, and uh, yeah,
he's got a chance here Now this is literally being
thrown into the Lions. Then the Nitney Lions come to town.
They're a twenty five point underdog. Uh and he got
the job after they already had practice on Tuesday. So
what can be done in that amount of time. We'll

(11:01):
wait and see. But he's excited. This is his all modern,
this is always what he wanted to do. So fingers
crossed that it goes well.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
No question about it, and they'll probably be a lot
of Penn State fans as their worldhouse state fans in
our state.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
Now.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
I was talking to Petros yesterday and he was saying,
UCLA really needs to have it on campus facility. Is
that something that is even remotely possible in the near future?

Speaker 7 (11:23):
You know, it's an interesting question. In nineteen in the sixties,
they wanted to have it and the students voted it down.
And then in the nineteen eighty when I was a
sophomore on campus, the students voted yes, but the chancellor
at the time decided that since he had just continued
a couple of majors, some of his friends in academias

(11:46):
that if you've built a new stadium on campus and
you've gotten rid of some academic majors, you can forget
getting another opportunity anywhere else, and so he turned it down.
So there are some complications with the neighbors and so forth,
and nothing happens if you don't try. And I totally
agree with the sentiments that we have to try to
get a stadium closer to camp.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
Yeah, I mean, it's just kind of an obvious thing
now at this point. Right back in the day, we
had the debate. Now there doesn't seem to be any debate.
And Rick, I gotta be honest with you, man, Look,
I don't want to spend the entire segment talking about UCLA.
For as much as you love the Bruins. So we
got bigger fish to fry here in Seattle. But I
just i'm i'm I'm fearful. I'm I'm fearful, fearful for
your alma mater. I think of all the teams and

(12:28):
the Big Ten right now, especially the ones that moved
into the conference, I'm most concerned about your team the most.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
Oh.

Speaker 7 (12:36):
I don't think there's any question they've got lousy leadership.
And you know, listen, I'm not trying to point fingers
at anybody firing football coaches. Just that's your answer. You've
got to look inside yourself and say, look, what are
we doing wrong where it's an underfinanced operation. When Deanton

(12:58):
Lynn is your defensive core and he takes your team
from eightieth to eleventh nation defensively, and USC, twelve miles
away in the same conference, can pay him a million
dollars more than you can, there's a problem. There's an
absolute problem. You were just telling your fan base we

(13:19):
don't want to compete, and that's exactly what happened.

Speaker 8 (13:22):
Rick.

Speaker 3 (13:22):
There are two separate headlines in the same paper on
the same day about the same game. One said you
dub whiffs against Ohio State. The other one said, you
dub proves they belong against Ohio State. Which side of
the which side of the ledgery do you fall on?
After that game that you watched so closely from the
CBS studio.

Speaker 7 (13:41):
Oh I think you dub proved that they belong. There
are a few players short of the depth that Ohio
State does. It's what I thought would be the problem
on the defensive front. And I give Ryan Day, the
head coach of Ohias State, a lot of credit. You know,
most guys who come in get head coaching jobs. As
a offensive coordinator want to have flamboyant offenses. He saw

(14:06):
what he thought was a very flamboyant offense with Washington,
and so Matt Patricia took away Demond Williams legs and
he said, I'll play complimentary football on offense by running
the ball and extinguishing the clock. Washington only had fifty
three plays in that game. I mean when you take
when you have fifty three plays that in the old

(14:28):
days used to be half of a game. Now that
was the entirety of the game. And it was a
great job of extinguishing the Washington offense in Demand's legs.
But Washington a couple of recruits away in that defensive front.
I think will prove that they're very very close.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
Yeah. Well, people keep asking, like, you know, how do
you feel after that game? Well, I don't know. Ask
me after Maryland.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
Ask me after they play Rutgers, asked me after they
played Michigan. I mean, right, if they come out and
struggle against those teams, then you can go back and
say the first three games of the year, we're kind
of a mirage because they played nobody but this Maryland
football team that we're gonna see Saturday, Rick. I don't
think they've played anybody either. I mean, they got what
Towson State Wisconsin's not very good n IU for God's sake.

(15:15):
So what is this four and old Maryland football team
in Malak Washington all about?

Speaker 7 (15:20):
Well, it's a great question, and I think this will
be there by far their sternest test. But I'm gonna
tell you right now, regardless of the outcome of the game,
you're gonna look at Malak Washington and feel like he's
going to be a star. He's got that rare swag
to him that it looks like it's easy now or

(15:41):
is he gonna make some freshman mistakes? Washington fans hope so.
But the bottom line is he like kind of like
Cam Word when he got into that Miami uniform, just
look like he belonged. This guy's pretty darn good, and
so dogs better be wary.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
He's eighteen and he's six five two thirty.

Speaker 7 (16:01):
Yeah, well right on, and he walks around like he
knows it.

Speaker 3 (16:07):
I want to talk about our quarterback, who's awesome, but
not six five two thirty Dumon Williams.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
I thought was.

Speaker 3 (16:13):
Really neutered running the football on Saturday. Was that more
of the U Dubs doing and his doing or more
of what Matt Patricia was doing on the other side.

Speaker 7 (16:24):
Of the ball. No, it was clearly Matt Patricia's plan.
They did what we call caging him. Rather than trying
to sack him and getting up the field in your
brush lanes, they basically kept him in the pocket. It's
like the old movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,
when Robert Redford couldn't hit anything, and then he asked,
can I move? And all of a sudden he could

(16:46):
hit everything right. Demon Williams was brilliant from the pocket
eighteen of twenty two for the game, but there was
no place to take off and run, and that was
what Ohio State and Matt Patricia were most concerned about
because that opens up so many other huge plays. They
thought they could keep most of the stuff in front
of them. They played it, as I mentioned, a complimentary

(17:08):
game and kept them having to go the long field.
It was it was going to be hard to do
that too many times against the Ohio State defense without
Williams's legs, and that was a I think Patricia has
come to the college ranks as well as any NFL
guy that I can recall and acclimated quickly.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
I mean that's like we said, if the offense can
get it together, we can go back and say, well,
they played the best defense in the country. That's They're
going to do that to a lot of teams. So
I'm really curious to see how they bounce back. But
Rick new Heiseel with us courtesy of Taco Time and Rick,
you know, John Wilner wrote a story about this, about
the inequities and the Big Ten schedules, And I mean,
first of all, Washington's got five games, this is one

(17:51):
of them where the opponent is coming off a buy.

Speaker 2 (17:54):
Michigan's got two, for example.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
How much of this is a big fat finger welcome
to the Big Ten from the rest of the conference
to a team like Washington honestly behind the scenes. And
then number two, I'm getting kind of tired of hearing
Lincoln Riley and Mick Cronin from the basketball side bitch
about this stuff. I'm kind of happy that Jed's not
complaining about it. How much would you be complaining about

(18:17):
this publicly if you were still coaching in this league?

Speaker 7 (18:20):
Well as you point out. When you complain publicly, it
comes off as whining, right, But this is the kind
of stuff that needed to be discussed by athletic directors
to the Conference office before these schedules ever see the
light of day. I mean, how many times are you
going to ask us to play at nine o'clock on
our body time? Just like you're asking somebody who's traveling

(18:42):
from the East coast to come out and play a
night game on the West coast. I mean, if you're
going to we understand that there's going to be times
when that may happen, but it can't happen more than once.
Just like you can't play a team that's coming off
of bye if you haven't more than once. Those are
things that can be into the computer before you spit

(19:02):
out a schedule. I mean, Alabama and Georgia played last week.
They both had a buy and to think that one
of those teams would not have a BUYE before they
played each other would have been heresy in the SEC.
So there is a bias and it's got to get fixed.
It's just early in their time in the Big Ten,

(19:22):
and you know how much clout they have is probably
still subject to debate.

Speaker 3 (19:28):
What did the Penn State Oregon game outcome tell you
about both teams?

Speaker 7 (19:33):
That Oregon's for real, which I suspected, And I think
that Drew Aller is got a ways to go before
he's going to be the guy that can take Penn
State to a championship. I really liked the kid, interviewed
him in Las Vegas at the Big Ten Media Days.
Charming young man. But he's got to make more plays.

(19:56):
And Andy Kotlnicki kind of gave him a chance to
make more plays in the second half with its legs,
which I thought was a good move and it kind
of gave him some confidence. There was a good touchdown
pass that second half, but you can't throw that pick
at the end of the game if you're going to
be the championship quarterback. And right now, that's one of
the reasons James is four and twenty one against Top

(20:17):
ten opponents.

Speaker 1 (20:18):
Right well, And that was what I was going to
ask you, because he's also one hundred and four and
forty three at Penn State in eleven years, when he's
got four New Year's Six Bowl wins in the last
seven seasons. But a lot of Penn State fans want
him fired because of that four and twenty one.

Speaker 2 (20:31):
Should he be fired?

Speaker 7 (20:33):
No, I mean you've gone to that many New Year's
Day games. You're doing something right, namely recruiting. They've got
to find a way to figure out what they do
best when the chips are on the line. They've got
Singleton and Allen, two really good backs, both thousand yard backs.
They should lean on them and maybe not put so

(20:56):
much pressure on Aler. But they're still a good team
and I think they'll make the College Football Playoff if
they finished ten and two. They're big challenge being that
game in Columbus.

Speaker 3 (21:08):
This private equity deal that came out yesterday that would
guarantee each Big ten school a nine figure up front payout.
Does this if this happens, does it expedite the march
to a super conference because I imagine the SEC would
try to follow suit, and then those two conferences are
just that much further ahead than everybody else.

Speaker 7 (21:26):
I actually think it keeps impact because if they take
it individually, you got to imagine the secs and the
same kind of throws. But it would allow for Brett
Yormack and Jim Phillips to do it the same maybe
not to the tune of nine figures for each school,

(21:47):
but if I keep saying the two of them should merge,
but it does keep the idea of that. You know
that the Big ten floated because you're because Petiti has
kept it himself very mum on what he once for
the college football Playoff other than he wants automatic qualifiers,
but that idea of twenty four teams in the college

(22:08):
football Playoff was something that he floated. I think that's
tied to this as a way to pay back the
private money that would be coming in. It's intriguing, but
I think it keeps college football looking pretty much like
it looked, and I'm excited for that.

Speaker 2 (22:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (22:26):
All right, Well let's get to it. Your Taco Time
pick of the week. Trying to get off the schneid
here big time. We've lost four in a row on
the air. We are one at five, and I'm gonna
totally mix this up right now, man, I'm gonna go
with the number six. You know what the number six is.
That's the veggie soft taco. I've literally never had a
Veggie Soft.

Speaker 7 (22:44):
You can't you can't do that.

Speaker 8 (22:45):
I can refuse you.

Speaker 1 (22:47):
Ago, no, no, no, desperate times, call for desperate measures. Baby,
I'm getting the number six veggie soft Taco. Who do
you like for your Taco Time pick of the week.

Speaker 7 (22:54):
Let's go as felt as you are, SAFTI. I don't
think you need the veggie. I understand it. Hate good
and it's all got all sorts of stuff stuff going on.
All right, listen, we're changing things up. I'm gonna I'm
gonna take Pitt this week, Pitt is hosting Boston College. Yes,
Pat Nardoozy's a buddy of mine. A year ago when
Kyle McCord and the high flying Syracuse Orange came in

(23:16):
as one of the top throwing teams in the ACC,
he picked them off five times. Right now, Boston College
is last in the ACC running the football. Their quarterback,
this lonergen kid is a really good player, but they're
throwing it all over the yard. Our Doozy's gonna have
a plan. I'm taking Pitt. I'll give the six and
a half. Okay, take the Panthers at home.

Speaker 1 (23:37):
Let's go rock and roll. We're on it baby, all right, man,
great stuff. Enjoy the weekend and we're talking a week coach,
appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (23:44):
See you boys, take care, all right, Rick.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
New heisl wits Pittsburgh minus the six and a half
against Boston College this Saturday for a Taco Tide Pick
of the Week. Let's get the Factor fiction, brought to
you by the Lucky Ego Casino and Hotel where every
day feels.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
Lucky to go. So glad you're with us.

Speaker 9 (24:00):
It's your shot at our weekly thousand bucks and the
ten thousand dollars grand prize. It's Fact Door Fiction, probably
presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel where every day
feels lucky. Fact Door Fiction is on Sports Radio ninety
three point three kjr FM.

Speaker 2 (24:20):
All right, here we go. It's Thursday, It's Dick Day.

Speaker 1 (24:23):
We did take the Chargers by the way against the
Commanders earlier this week, and the Commanders just ruled out
Terry McLaurin again for this game this weekend. So I
feel pretty good about that pick. I feel good about
Jackson's pick from who did you take?

Speaker 2 (24:34):
Yesterday? Jackson?

Speaker 5 (24:35):
I took the under and tonight's Theresa Nye game just
because I looked at the forty nine Ers injuries and
I said, I don't think they store a touchdown tonight.

Speaker 1 (24:40):
Okay, was that because you were like underneath your table
when you made that selection, or underneath the couch or whatever.
Because last week it took Minnesota because of Dan Wilson.

Speaker 8 (24:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (24:48):
No, I've let go of the vibes. And it's actual.
It's some actual logic in the nineties I had.

Speaker 2 (24:55):
To use, right, all right, Well, it's Thursday, it's Dick Day, Dick.
What do you got If the.

Speaker 3 (24:59):
New Orleans Saints are gonna win a game, it's this one.
It is this one. I love going against bad teams
coming off of big wins. I still feel like the
New York Giants are a bad team. They came off
an upset win over the Chargers. Saints now have some
film on Jackson dark quarterbacks in their first two road
starts of their career over the last twenty years, thirteen

(25:19):
and thirty four straight.

Speaker 2 (25:21):
Up and Jackson Dard has no neighbors.

Speaker 3 (25:24):
And remember the Saints have been pretty tough against every
team except the Seaalffs.

Speaker 1 (25:29):
By the way, thought he said neighbors. Said he's got
no neighbors, Like he lives in some giant field with
nobody around them. No neighbors, man.

Speaker 3 (25:39):
I mean, the Saints played the Cardinals tough. The Saints
played the Niners stuff and they actually hung with the Bills.
The only game they got blown out was the Seahawks game,
and that was largely due to special teams.

Speaker 2 (25:47):
I think Spencer.

Speaker 3 (25:48):
Ratler gets his first win as an NFL starter, and
we can take a two game swing on the Ian
Show because Jess picked up Giants.

Speaker 1 (25:55):
Well, why the hell not. Let's go for it. Man,
Saints are given two? Is that right?

Speaker 2 (25:59):
One? In the weekend? One and a half is the line.

Speaker 1 (26:00):
Okay, one and a half is the line. I like
that even better. By the way, against the Giants. If
you're Brian Dable, you're like asking yourself, how did I
wake up? And I'm an underdog to the New Orleans
freaking Saints. Right, that's how bad I am.

Speaker 8 (26:11):
Man.

Speaker 2 (26:12):
That guy's next, You know that question?

Speaker 1 (26:14):
Well him and miam Oh geez, all right, we're gonna
take the Saints minus the point and a half at
the Supernome on Sunday. You like it, you text in fact,
you hate it? You text in fiction to four nine,
four to five one. All brought to by our friends
at the Lucky Eagle Casino in Hotel where every day
feels lucky every Day three thirty five, We.

Speaker 2 (26:31):
Give you a game. You like it.

Speaker 1 (26:32):
You text in fact, you hated you text in fiction
to four nine four to five one. You got one
pick right a week on any show and you're eligible
for one thousand dollars weekly prize. Big thanks to the
Lucky Ego Casino and Hotel again where every day feels Lucky.
Saints minus the one and a half is the play
four nine, four to five to one factor fiction A
little fun with audio coming next Mike Columbrian at four.

Speaker 2 (26:54):
We're gonna hear from Luke Rayley. We're gonna hear from
Dan Wilson.

Speaker 1 (26:57):
We're gonna hear from Brian who all coming up before
Niners Rams tonight from the five twenty Bar and Grill
on ninety three three KJRFM. We got to just we
got to be able to make you know, change us
on the fly because joining us right now from t
Mobile Park Mariner Skipper Dan Wilson is with us live
on ninety three three KJRFM.

Speaker 2 (27:17):
Dan, It's SOFTI and Dick. How are you man?

Speaker 7 (27:20):
Good guys?

Speaker 2 (27:20):
How are you We're good? We're good.

Speaker 1 (27:22):
So tell us about this, tell us about what this
run means to you you never left Seattle, you decided
you and your wife to make your home here after
you retired. You're a part of that ninety five team,
a part of the one team, and now you're back
here as the manager for the first Division championship in
twenty four years. What does this personally man mean to
you and your family?

Speaker 9 (27:43):
Dan?

Speaker 4 (27:44):
I mean, you know, it's obviously special and to be
a part of it and around it, I think is amazing.
But it's really about, you know, this whole group that
we have here, from from the you know, incredible group
of players that we have that you guys have seen
and have done some pretty magical stuff on the field,
to you know, an incredible coaching staff and support staff.

Speaker 8 (28:03):
These guys are amazing.

Speaker 4 (28:04):
Uh, and you know, front office, everybody that's involved here,
you know, has uh has pulled together and and uh,
it's quite a group and and I think it feels
good for everybody here is as that it's been a
lot of hard work. It's been a lot you know,
of of pouring into this team, and uh, everybody just
has responded so well and and feels good to be here.
It feels good to get prepared for what's coming this weekend,

(28:25):
and and I can't wait to get the team mobile
uh on Saturday, just to just to feel the electricity
it's going to be in this building.

Speaker 3 (28:32):
Well, Dan, you've done an amazing job. Congratulations thus far.
And the only downside of getting a one or two
seed is, uh, you have to keep your team sharp.
So how are you able to keep your team sharp
and focused because you were playing such good baseball in
the month of September.

Speaker 8 (28:48):
Yeah, no doubt.

Speaker 4 (28:49):
Uh. You know, I think in some ways blessing and
a curse. I think, you know, I think the blessing
for us really has been that that uh, you know,
we we've had to push some guys hard, you know,
towards the end of the sea, and and getting them
a little bit of extra rest I think is actually
gonna work in our advantage. And whether it's on the
mound or in the field, you know, guys have pushed,
they've h they pushed themselves, and they left it all

(29:11):
out on the field and and getting this rest as
we charged their batteries and and gotten them going again.
And and you know, I think, uh, being out here
yesterday just again feeling the electricity in this building, Uh
from the fans. I think the fans have been a
huge part of this and and we gained so much
energy from them. And and uh so getting back out here,
you know, yesterday and today, getting some live at bats

(29:33):
and getting some game like action has been really good
to keep us sharp and keep us ready.

Speaker 8 (29:39):
Uh and uh again, we're.

Speaker 4 (29:40):
All looking forward to Saturday when when this thing starts
for real.

Speaker 2 (29:43):
No, I can't wait. Man, gonna be an epic day.

Speaker 1 (29:45):
Huskies twelve thirty, you guys, hopefully, in my selfish opinion,
go at five o'clock. And then we got to the
Hawks at one. And you guys against Sunday night. But
this is the first time we've had you on since
we know who you're playing. Tigers. Just won you get
the Tigers now, you beat them four out of six
during the regular season. Give us us your take on
this opponent that you'll see starting Saturday at Team Mobile Park.

Speaker 4 (30:05):
Yeah, you know, obviously a team that has has gone
through it, as every team does during the course of
the season, and and uh you know found themselves uh
sort of on the down end towards the end, but
able to kind of get through this series.

Speaker 8 (30:17):
And you know, I think we'll be ready to go.
You know, I think we stack.

Speaker 4 (30:21):
Up well against this club and and have played well
against them. Uh you know, played them right before the
break and really swung the bat well in that series,
and uh, you know, threw the ball well in that
series as well. So I think we gained a lot
of confidence from that. And uh, but it's you know,
it's postseason baseball, and and we're going to be prepared.
We're going to be ready and and really looking forward
to to, as we said, getting started on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
Dan, do you believe now, uh, should we expect that
Brian Will will pitch in one of those first three
games of the series, Uh.

Speaker 4 (30:52):
You know, through a bullpen today and and we'll take
a look at how he kind of responds tomorrow and
and make our final decisions as we get a little
bit closer. So still a little bit of an unknown,
but uh, you know, I thought it was a good
bullpen session today and and uh, you know, obviously wanting
to weigh several factors, they're not trying to push them
too quickly, so we'll we'll just kind of put it

(31:13):
all together and and see what we come up with tomorrow.

Speaker 8 (31:15):
In the next day or so and and we'll have
a final decision.

Speaker 3 (31:18):
Well, Dan, you mentioned being successful against the Tigers at
four and two, and part of the reason is you've
gotten after their ace. Why have you had success against
Trek Scooble.

Speaker 4 (31:28):
Yeah, you know, obviously, uh one of the league's best pitchers.
And and we've been able to get to him a
couple of times. And you know, I think one of
the keys is putting a lot of pitches on him early,
uh and and making him work. And when our guys
do that, when they grind out there at bats like
they do, uh, he can you know, you you you
stand a much better chance.

Speaker 8 (31:47):
And and we've been able to do that.

Speaker 4 (31:49):
We've been able to get a couple of guys on
and and a couple of guys able to hit some
balls out of the ballpark with him. So you know,
we've got a pretty good game plan. We've we've beaten
some some tough lefties this season, and we'll just continue
that same game plan, you know, against the Derek school ball.
And you know, our guys with there at bats, with
the depth of our lineup, you feel like we're a
pretty good spot.

Speaker 2 (32:08):
You know.

Speaker 1 (32:08):
It's funny that Dan We have a lot of college
football coaches, NFL coaches on we ask him.

Speaker 2 (32:12):
Hey, what do you need from the crowd? Right? We
need you guys to be loud on third down whatever.

Speaker 1 (32:17):
You know what this place is like during the playoffs, Kingdome,
Safego Field, T Mobile Park.

Speaker 2 (32:23):
What do you need?

Speaker 1 (32:23):
What's your message for this crowd on Saturday, no matter
what time you play?

Speaker 4 (32:29):
I mean, just bring the energy they bring, you know,
they just they do such a great job. And the
love affair between you know, the Mariners and there and
their fans is epic. And you know, I'm just really
looking forward to to hear, hearing and feeling the energy
that's going to be in this ballparks as.

Speaker 8 (32:46):
It really energizes everybody here. You know, in the dugout
for sure.

Speaker 3 (32:50):
You talk about the energy and the camaraderie. Just talk
about what that's been like, particularly since the trade deadline
when you brought over Geno and Josh.

Speaker 4 (32:59):
Yeah, you know this a We've talked about it a
lot during the season, but it's a special group of
players and and uh, you know, they've been together for
a while now, and and getting Geno back and and
the energy and and the you know the positive energy
that he brings to a clubhouse, bringing in a Josh
Naylor and and uh uh you know his uh you know,
winning attitude, his is uh desire to win, and and

(33:22):
his intensity on the field that has been a big,
you know lift for us as well. And and uh
you know Caleb Ferguson down in the bullpens adding on
another lefty. So but you know, getting the new guys
in here, and and uh, our group of guys.

Speaker 8 (33:35):
Just kind of open arms and and bringing them in.

Speaker 2 (33:38):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (33:38):
Like we said, there's just a lot of love in
that clubhouse. And and uh you know, uh pulling for
each other, pushing each other, and that's what it's all about.

Speaker 8 (33:45):
And and when they do that, that's when they're at
their best.

Speaker 1 (33:48):
Damn before you go, I got one more for you.
Uh And and you gotta be honest with me, man,
give give us please. What is Annie's real opinion of
your mustache? And if you weren't managing a pace team,
and you weren't superstitious, do you admit it's horrible?

Speaker 8 (34:05):
Well, I think the word is tolerat. She's tolerating them
up there at the moment.

Speaker 1 (34:10):
I love it. Hey, listen, you keep winning. You can
do whatever you want to your face. Man, you got
permission from Hola last for sure. All right, listen, go
get him good luck starting Saturday, Go kick ass and
we'll talk see you.

Speaker 5 (34:21):
Man.

Speaker 2 (34:21):
Appreciate this, Dan, all right, thanks guys, appreciate it. You bet.

Speaker 1 (34:25):
Dan Wilson with us says, we don't know. I'm Brian Woo.
Got to see how he responds to today. I mean
that's the question, right, Will he pitch in one of
these first three games of the Tiger series, which means
either Saturday, Sunday or Tuesday in Detroit. We'll get a break.
We got a lot more to get to between now
and five o'clock. Mike Holmbrian's gonna pop on with us
as well next as we continue from the five twenty
Bar and Grill on ninety three to three KJRFM.

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
