By the way, our friend fromthe San Jose Mercury News courtesy of

(00:44):
our pals at simply Seattle. It'sour buddy, Johnny Wilner. How are
you man? I am good. Thanks, Hey, you guys, we're
good. There's a lot to talkabout, a lot going on big ten
media days this week. You doublego on Thursday. Kaylin de Boor.
By, by the way, it'sgoing to be on our show in about
an hour and fifteen minutes from now. And I'm getting a lot of reaction

(01:06):
from Husky fans, and a lotof it not good. A lot of
Husky fans saying, don't put themon the air. I don't want to
hear from the guy. We've movedon. Blah blah blah. How do
you think Husky fans should remember Caitlinde Boor and the two years he spent
here in Seattle? John, Sothat's why I got moved from five o'clock,
correct, I see what's going on. It reminds me of Washington State

(01:30):
fans being upset that Pat Seuhn leftfor Washington. Yeah. I mean,
it's just this stuff happens. Andit's not like he left Washington for Minnesota
or South Carolina. He left itto replace the greatest coach of all time
at what is arguably one of thetop three or four college football brands of

(01:53):
all time. And I don't blamehim, and I don't think they should.
Right, he didn't go to adirect competitor, He didn't go to
somebody in the region. He tookWashington one win from the national championship in
two years, and then he tooka great opportunity, and Husky fans should
just be grateful for his two yearsin Seattle. Uh, and wish him

(02:19):
well unless unless Washington ends up playingAlabama. Just wish him well. John.
I agree with that, having grownup in Seattle loving the Huskies and
and just you know, one ofthe great honors and thrills to have been
able to play there as well.I just I just look and say,
Washington's got a very proud history andand and yet they're not Alabama. So

(02:40):
I agree with what you just said. I don't hold any grudges. For
those who do hold the grudges, could an argument, a reasonable argument be
made that sounds something like, Okay, we get you went to Bama,
but let's just kind of go throughsome of the nuances. This is how
it happened, and could have itbeen done better slash more professional? For

(03:05):
those who held that opinion, what'swhat's your take? Could have he done
it better? Well? I actuallyhave a strong opinion on this one,
and I would say folks who thinkthat they should be asking the questions of
Washington's administration, not of Kalin deBor. They speed Oregon. I think
I've mentioned this on your show. Before they beat Oregon in the middle of

(03:29):
October. There should have been acontract decision on his desk, a big
one the next morning. If I'mrunning the show there, That's what I
would happen. I would not havelet it get to the point where Jabor
and Jimmy Section had an easy out, an easy excuse to not sign in

(03:49):
whatever it was. When they putit in front of the mid late November,
Troy Danen put a contracted sension infront of them. They should have
had it on that Sunday morning afterthe Oregon game. May maybe he wouldn't
have signed it, but that wouldto me, would have indicated Washington was
doing everything it could have retain him. The way things unfolded, I would

(04:09):
argue they didn't do everything they couldhave. Yeah, well, I mean
not just an extension, but tomake him the highest paid coach in college
football on on on top of that, or maybe top two or three when
it was all said and done.So I agree with a lot of what
you guys are saying. I alsoget why the fans are upset right,
because you thought you had something incrediblethat you would be able to enjoy for
maybe a decade or so, andthen that completely fell apart, And I

(04:31):
get why fans are angry. Thenumber one candidate where you would send your
anger to is obviously Kaitlin because he'sthe biggest factor, the biggest name in
the entire conversation. But I meanboth of us. You know, John
Hugh and I have a list ofthings we want to bring up with Kaylan
when he comes on the ear fivetwenty. What would you want to know
from him if you could sit downwith him and ask him a couple of
questions. What would those questions befor you? Well, I would want

(04:55):
to know if if there had beena contract offer on his ask the daff
the Oregon game, might things haveturned out differently? Or was he disappointed
that he didn't have, you know, an A plus level offer. And
we're not talking about going from fourwhat was he at four point one million
last year? Four point two rightin there right, not just going from

(05:18):
there to five or six. Ifthey put an offer on his desk that
goes to eight or nine and it'sseven eight years, would he have signed?
Is that what he wanted to seefrom Washington was that all in commitment
earlier. Right, That's to me, that's what I'm kind of curious about.

(05:39):
You know how, sorry John tointerrupt you. You know how interviews
go. There's a lot of times, I mean, David Iverson and I've
been on both ends of the interviews. There's a lot of questions that you
say, Okay, I'd like toknow, but at some point you have
to filter those questions and you say, are we likely to get a reasonable
answer? Now, some of thoseyou just said, look, I'm likely

(06:00):
to get a non answer, butI have to end ask it anyways.
I mean, is klnd Boord likelyto come on as the head coach of
Alabama and say, yeah, ifif I got offered this robust contract right
after Oregon, I would have signedit and I'd still be the Husky coach.
Like, is the Alabama head coachreally gonna ever admit that even if

(06:23):
it's true, I don't know,But I to me, like you said,
there's some questions you got to askeven if you don't think you're gonna
get an answer, And he maysay something that even if it's not a
yes or no, But reveals hismindset at the time that to me would
be as interesting as whether he was, you know, candidate enough to give

(06:46):
you a yes or no. ButI would also say to Washington fans and
I understand too, you know youdisappointed Washington. It's not like the future
is necessarily dark. Washington has hadtwo different head coaches in the last eight
years that have taken the Huskies tothe playoffs at Washington and won a national
championship of decades ago. It's notlike Caleen de Bore was a diamond in

(07:13):
the rough in the history of Washingtonfootball. Over the last what has been
quarter century, thirty years, They'vedone it. They've gotten to the pinnacle
a couple of different times with differentcoaches. It can be done again,
no question. Well, John Wilneris with us, and I guess the
question is what should we expect outof you? Dub and you're number one
of the Big ten. There's thesecorrect me if I'm wrong. The Big

(07:34):
Ten does not do an official mediapole like the PAC twelve used to,
but there are some media polls comingout. I think Cleveland dot Com had
one. Other places have one.I've seen you, Dub pick ninth and
tenth, as high as fourth onsome ballots. But is that right?
The Big Ten does not do anofficial media pole, that is correct,

(07:56):
there's nothing preseason from the Big canSo for the media that does see a
ninth or a tenth place finish outof eighteen, is that right on?
Is that maybe a little bit off? What do you think? I did
not participate in the Cleveland dot Compole, but I would have picked Washington,
you know, off the top ofmy head, somewhere in the seven

(08:18):
eight nine range, you know,I just there. I have a lot
of questions actually at the line ofscrimmage, and I would argue that play
at the line of scrimmage is evenmore important in the Big Ten than it
was in the pat twelve. It'smore important when you don't have Michael Pennick
junior and a newsday than it waslast year. And so they are regressing

(08:43):
until proven otherwise. I look atWashington as regressing when that position group actually
needs to be better than it wasin order for them to compete. John
Wilner with us. John when Washingtonwas a debating if there was a debate
about whether to go to to theBig Ten, and we were discussing.

(09:03):
My take was, look, ifyou're going to do this, Washington's going
to do this. This is anentire football networking community that's got to make
the commitment. And obviously with respectsto the collective right and specifically Montlake futures,
does the Husky fan base have thestomach and the will to play in

(09:24):
the Big Boy League stepping up tothe premier league? To that question,
what would you say is the updateon that? Is it your sense that
Washington is going to have the resourcesto compete against the Michigan's, Ohio States
and the Penn States. I thinkit's TBD, but I would agree with

(09:46):
you Hugh. To me, thatis the single defining question of Washington Football's
you know, near term future, near intermediate term future, next six eight
years is the will they are thewill institutionally, you know, Central Campus
is a big part of the wholething. The will of the boosters,

(10:09):
with the collectives, will within theathletic department. I mean, I think
the athletic department is all in,but you can't just be all in there.
It's it's like a triangle and you'vegot to have those other parts working
and that you know, here hereI go angering a lot of your listeners,
But the model is five hours tothe south because Oregon is all in

(10:33):
to win at the highest level ofcollege football institutionally with its donors and obviously
having filled Night's a big advantage andwithin the athletic department, and the Ducks
have been like that a long time, and that's what you're going to need
to compete with Michigan and Ohio Stateand USC if they get their act together.

(10:54):
Well, and some would say thatit hasn't worked yet in Eugene because
they haven't won that coveted national championshipthat Phil Knight has been seeking since that
Penn State Rolls Bowl way back innineteen ninety five. And there was a
report that came out the ore daythat Phil Knight knows that he may not
have as much time left on thisrock and he wants to go all in
providing unlimited resources for Oregon's NIL programs. So is that going to be what

(11:18):
will finally push Oregon over the top. Well, Honestly, John, I
don't mean to be a smart asshere, but will they be able to
finally buy the national title they've beenlooking for? Well, I mean now
you can buy it and it's perfectlylegal. They they're on the short list.
You look at the rosters, they'reon the short list with Ohio State
and probably with Georgia, maybe Texas. To win the thing doesn't mean they

(11:43):
will. They have come very close. They were close in the national championship
game against Auburn boy. I thinkthat this year they got a great chance.
They have not gotten over the hump, but they It's hard, that's
the other thing. It's hard. And it's especially hard for the schools out
west because, as we've talked aboutbefore, you know, you to win

(12:05):
those playoff games, the semi finalsand championship, you got to do it
with the line of scrimmage. Andthe schools in the Midwest and the schools
in the South have more good, big guys on both sides of scrimmage.
So it's even harder for the teamson the West coast to do it.
And and the Oregon is proof ofthat because they've done everything possible, but

(12:26):
they don't they haven't quite been goodenough at the line of scrimmage. Well.
One of the the game plans andand strategies that has emerged out of
Eugene I find interesting with respects, let's just talk about the quarterbacks. They
have had transfer quarterbacks after Justin Herbertobviously, you had a brief time there

(12:48):
with Tyler Shock. Then you hadAnthony Brown, a transfer from BC.
You had bow Knicks obviously. Nowthey have Dylan Gabriel. They they have
chased off their their high school recruitit like ty Thompson, the most celebrated
recruit they've ever had at that position. What the high school recruiting at some
point at the quarterback position, can'tsomebody say, look, why would you

(13:13):
go to Oregon when all they're gonnado is every couple of years they're gonna
survey the landscape of college players, and they're gonna go buy an experienced college
quarterback, and you're just gonna languishand I could you know, Butterfield and
a bunch of other quarterbacks there. What about that dynamic that's emerging not just
in Eugene with Oregon, but acrossthe landscape of college football? Well,

(13:37):
yeah, I mean, I meanWashington similar, right, I mean Jacob
Beeson and Pennix and Rogers. Right, So yeah, I think that that's
just a trend because if you're ahead coach, and you can get an
experienced player at that position. It'sso tempting to take the experience over a
guy who's going to have to growinto it. But you get into that

(14:00):
and it's impossible to create a situationwhere a recruit gets enough experience, so
you kind of get trapped. Anda lot of schools are doing it.
I mean, Ohio State doing itright now this year, trying to win
it. Certainly the Ducks are kindof at the upper end of the extreme
end. I mean Anthony Brown too, right, So yeah, but there's

(14:24):
a lot there's a lot of schoolsthat are like that, no question,
John, great stuff, and bythis time in a week, we'll have
plenty of stuff to talk about.I'm sure coming out of media Day we're
getting closer to you. Dub campstarting as well. So awesome job,
appreciate it. Welcome back from vacation, pal. We'll talk sooner, right,
Thanks a lot, guys, Allright, John Wilner with us again.

(14:45):
Courtesy is simply Seattle and Hugh.I mean it's kind of, you
know, just obvious, but thebiggest question mark about this Husky football team
is clearly the offensive line. Imean, you got five guys gone,
three guys in the SEC, twoguys in the NFL. You know the
guys that you do have back Landand Hatchet banged up. He's got,
I believe the ACL. I'm noteven sure if he's gonna be ready for

(15:07):
fall camp next week. Guard Memolarobviously coming back. But then you got
a bunch of transfers, the kidfrom Ohio State, Maximus coming over,
the kid from San Diego State. So you know, more often than not
in this business, you want tohave a you know, a solid hard
take and have an absolute, rocksolid opinion what you're about to see with
a certain position group and with theoffensive line. I've been telling Dick,

(15:28):
I'm concerned about it. I justthink it's fair for Uskie fans to say
I don't know, because nobody hasany idea what these guys will look like.
I like the fact they have maybea softer start to the schedule to
get things kind of going early. If they're playing Michigan and Penn State in
the first couple of weeks of theyear, that could be a disaster for
them. But dude, I gotno idea, Hughie, what this offensive

(15:48):
line is gonna look like. Nothing. Yeah, And I think compounding that
concern is is it's not just theindividuals. You know, obviously there's five
offensive linemen, but sometimes too let'ssay average offensive lineman, let's say a
left guard and a left tackle. They may work so well together, right
and communicate so well. Let's sayzone blocking. You know, if if

(16:10):
if if Jackson and I are gonnazone block you, you know we're gonna
we're gonna come off together and doubleteam you, and then we both have
eyes to the next level on thelinebacker, and then one of us is
going to slip off and get thelinebacker. Well, there's a timing to
that and a cohesion and an unspokencommunication that it takes gelling. And so

(16:33):
you can have really good line thatthat somehow that just they don't they don't
have the cohesion. Or similarly, you could have an offensive line that is
greater than the sum of the partsthat they just have this this well coached.
They seem to get one another onthe timing, they hand off stunts
in the passing game, and andthey see things and and and they work

(16:56):
as a unit better. So soI think there's so many questions. And
then of course what we're used toseeing. Is is in the discussion for
the best quarterback in the country inPenix growing to in the discussion for the
best receiving corps. The only onethat could have arrivaled that would been Ohio
State in LSU from a year ago. I mean, Washington is no worse

(17:17):
than the third best receiving corps inthe United States last year and arguably the
best. So there's a lot ofparts, and it's not just the line,
but you're right, it certainly allstarts there, and without that,
you're not doing anything at any level, no question. Well, let's do
this, come back and chat aboutthis a little bit because Kaylen de Bor
is gonna join us at five twentyand there are I've heard from them a

(17:40):
lot today, a lot of Huskyfans that are not happy that Kaylen de
Bor is coming on the air.And so we're gonna come back and discuss
his legacy here what Jetfish is inheritingthe work that Jetfish has done with the
roster since Kaylen took off, whichI think has been about as good as
you can expect. By the way, he's got a seventeenth rated class in
the country, which is awesome rightnow, but let's come back and discuss

(18:00):
this because we got a big conversationcoming up for the first time since he
left for Alabama. Kayler de Boris going to do an interview with a
Seattle radio station and that'll be withus at five point twenty tonight, coming
up in an hour right here onninety three three KJRFM live from the R
and R Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio. Now back to Softie and Dick on your

(18:21):
Home for the Huskies and the KrakenSports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.
Alright back here at Jimmy's on firstTuesday afternoon, Safie and Digla Jackson
until seven. You in for Dicktoday and tomorrow. Seawk training camp starts
tomorrow at three o'clock. Can't believeit, finally here, not ready for

(18:41):
it, but it's tomorrow. Huskycamp starts next Thursday. I believe what
thingy is the first by the way, somebody check their calendar and next Thursday
is that first day a Husky camp. Holy moly. Anyway, Kayln de
Bor is going to join us tonightat five point twenty. Hugh and I
threw it out there on social onX that Klen was going to hop on,

(19:03):
and a lot of fans were nothappy that Kaylen de Bor is going
to join us on the radio showtoday. Why are you putting that guy
on? He's a bum, hescrewed us over, he left us in
a lurch, blah blah blah. Why let him come on the air and
recruit for Alabama blah blah blah. What do you, first of all,
as a Husky fan and a radioman, think of the idea of putting
Kaln de Bor on the program today? Well, I think that it would

(19:27):
be topical. I mean, he'sa very important, if brief figure in
Washington football. I think the factthat he hasn't done any interviews in this
market, has not spoken, Ithink is a key look. If people
despise Kaylen Debor, I don't understandit. They don't have to listen.

(19:48):
But I think that the majority ofmy sense of the majority of the listeners
of KGr would be interested in Debor. I think that he has some things
he wants to say. You've beentexting with him. I've been texting with
him, and and so I knowhe has a message that he wants to
say to Husky fans and so soI I yeah, no, I would

(20:10):
say yes, yes, and yeson on whether or not to put Calen
Deboor on the air. Yeah.I guess I'm just trying to wrap my
head around what could make somebody beupset with him to a point where they
would not listen to the interview orwant to listen, or be that angry
with him. And I guess, just surface level, I get it.
I mean, fans are fanatical, that's you know, short for fanatic,

(20:33):
obviously, and sometimes emotion and logicdoesn't really play a role. And I
totally understand that, you know.I guess for me as a fan of
the football team, I could seesomebody saying, hey, you know what,
man, I thought we had somethingreally special building here with this guy.
I thought he loved it here.I thought he was going to be
the next Don James. I waslooking forward to him being the next Don
James. I thought we had achance to be elite for a long long

(20:56):
time with him, and then heturned us back on us. And if
you're not with us, you're againstus. I totally understand that philosophy,
no question about it. But Iguess I would just also ask somebody,
are you Are you thankful for theKaitlin Debor era? Are you thankful that
for two years you were twenty fiveand three, the beat Oregon three times,

(21:18):
including the two biggest matchups ever everagainst Oregon in the Pac twelve Championship
and Week six you had the highestranking finisher in the Heisman Trophy ever,
and you had your first New Yearsix Bowl win since the Rose Bowl,
and you played for the National Championshipfor the first time since nineteen ninety one.
Are you thankful for that era?Or would you rather have just gone

(21:41):
in a different direction and never hiredthe guy in the first place? Yeah?
Well, I concur with you.I think it's much better to have
had him. I would just say, and I'm glad you brought up Don
James, because there in lies kindof the rub. Don James came from
the same part of the country, the Midwest. He was from Ohio,
Kaitlin just northwest, a little bitfrom North Dakota and Don James, I

(22:06):
mean, I had to I hadto talk with Carol after Debor left it.
You know, I just said, hey, refresh my memory because I
want to make sure I have thefacts right. So this was not long
ago. And and she told thestory about how Ohio State, uh,
the the athletic director. This hadto have been around the Earl Bruce Bruce
time when Earl Bruce got hired.Anyways, DJ could have gone to Ohio

(22:30):
State, back to his home state, the Buckeye State, and he chose
not to. He just said, hey, I've got everything I need at
Washington. That that's what gets youto be a legend. That's what gets
you a statue, and and youare, you know, forever immortalized in
your greatness and your contributions. Okay, that's a value statement by Don James.
And so while for me, II vault Don James, this reciprocal

(22:56):
is not true. You would thinkit would. It's not the case for
me. That then then well,if I'm going to lionize Don James for
his decision and his values, thatI'm going to demonize Kalin de boor No,
not true. I'm not going todo that for me. It's it's
very black and white. I lookand I say, is Washington the mecca

(23:18):
of football. I'm very proud ofWashington's tradition. Loved it as a kid,
you know, grateful, to aparticipate in infinite testimony in it,
but it's not the mecca. Andon any list objective list of teams that
are programs that are inarguably superior toWashington, either you know now or you

(23:40):
know is it two years, twentyyears, fifty years, whatever. Here's
a list USC, Michigan, Ohio, State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma,
Alabama that you can just start rightthere. I don't think there's a it's
a big list, but certainly thoseschools are on the list. And guess
what, whether it's four teams orwhether it's eight teams or whatever, the
Alabama is always in that list.So for me, if I just say
I if the Washington coach has earnedthe right to be considered and offered a

(24:04):
job at Alabama, I cannot resenthim for going to Alabama. That just
seems nonsensical to me. And thenthe other part is that and and part
two of this is the people thatI know. There's not many who are
there when I was playing, whenI asked them before he left, Hey,
what kind of guy is Kaylen debor To a man to a woman?
Everybody say, Kaylen de Boor isrespectful, and he is kind and

(24:29):
he is gracious, and he's attentive, and he's supportive to every single person
in the building top to bottom, from the ticket takers on up. And
that type of human being for me, You say, well, what's his
one sin? He wants to coachAlabama? I'm sorry, I cannot.
I cannot build up a grudge orhostility to Kaylen de Borer, and I
respect those who do. I justdon't see it that way. You know,

(24:52):
it's funny when when topics like thiscome up, you and I hear
from as many people as I didtoday on social media, and Jackson will
confirm we're still hearing from them onthe text line, right Jackson four nine
four to five. Yeah. Ialmost want to have like a big community
get together where all of us canbe in the same room, hundreds of
us together and discuss this and talkthis out, because I hate just going

(25:15):
back and forth in a text orone hundred and forty characters or less or
whatever it is allowed now on socialmedia. I really want to dive into
this with people. And again,I understand why fans are upset. I've
I've said why, I get whyfans are upset. I do think though,
that I wonder people have often saidthat what Steve Sarkeshian did after Tyrone

(25:36):
Willingham made the job attractive to ChrisPeterson, that he would not have come
to You Dub if sark did notkind of semi turn that thing around.
I wonder if Jedfish, if heends up winning at Washington, will come
back and say, hey, Icame to you Dubb because of what Kaitlyn
de Bor did there, because heshowed what was possible. Would Jedfish have
come to you Dub after Jimmy Lakewent four and eight or a coach of

(25:59):
Jed's ilk have come to you Dubafter Jimmy Lake went four and eight.
So that's I'll just toss that outthere. And then number two. I
think a lot of us, andyou know, Dick and I certainly feel
this way. I think Jackson doesas well. That you know, based
on Jed's track record, we don'texpect him to be here for very long,
right. I mean, if hewas at you Dubb for five or
six years, that would be youknow, a break from his past,
that would be a you know,a one to eighty from what he's done.

(26:22):
And all of us have said We'reokay with that as long as Washington
benefits from it. Washington benefited fromtwo years of Kaitlin de Boor tremendously gave
us some of the greatest moments inprogram history. So if we're okay with
it from Jed Fish, why arewe not okay with it from Kaylan?
And maybe it's because of the wayhe left right. One of the things

(26:44):
I want to ask coach when hecomes on the air with us you would
five twenty is you never said goodbye. You never had a Twitter post or
a Facebook message or anything of theof the like like Jed did to Arizona,
And a lot of Arizona fans toldJedfish to stick it when he wrote
that goodbye letter on Twitter. Buthe wrote it, and Kaylen de Boor
never did that. So does heregret that? You know, people think

(27:07):
he was distracted during the Michigan gameby Alabama? Was that the case during
that game? A lot of peoplewant to know, you know, why
Tybo Rogers was allowed to play againstTexas with these disgusting accusations hanging over his
head. So there's going to bea lot of things that we will go
over with Kaylin de bor Hugh atfive point twenty that I don't think have

(27:27):
been addressed yet. Well, we'veboth got a long list of questions.
Yeah, I'm glad you brought upjetfish because to me, it's like the
ecosystem in the ocean. You know, I go to the ocean because so
many of the biggest animals on aland dwelling in our herbivores. So I
think it can get complicated. Butlet's just go to the ocean as a

(27:47):
general rule, bigger fish, bigfish eat smaller fish. Okay, And
so Alabama ate our coach, Wellwe turned around and we ate Arizona's coach.
That's right, because we're bigger fishthan Arizona. And and so is
it is it the case that likelike like I just try and apply some
of the the whatever take you have. You say, okay, it has

(28:08):
to apply with some consistency. Andso are we gonna We're gonna demonize Kaylan
de Boor, but then we're gonnachampion uh uh jedfish because why because he's
the husky coach. Well he didthe same thing to Arizona, did he
not? In any material sense? So I just think it's the way of
