(00:00):
Right now joining us on the radioshow. The former Edge Rushier coach with
the Aubren Tigers, who was nowthe defensive coordinator at FAU Rock Bellentani is
with us on the radio show talkingabout Derek call Rock. I appreciate this
coach. How are you? I'mgreat man, Thanks for having me on.
I really appreciate it. Pleasant surprise. I enjoyed my time in the
(00:21):
Pacific Northwest at Washington State. It'sgreat to be back on with you guys.
There you go. Well, let'stalk about Derek call When you heard
the news that he was selected numberthirty seven overall by the Seahawks. Were
you surprised by that? Did yousee that coming? What was your take
on that pick by the Hawks today? And you know, I wanted to
say I was surprised. I'm alittle surprised he lasted until day two,
(00:42):
To be honest with you, Derekhad great tape. He killed the senior
ball, crushed the combine. SoI was a little surprised he made it
to day two. But I knewthe Seahawks were interested in him. I
met with a lot of their scoutsthroughout the year. It's a great pick,
a great pick. It's gonna bea home run pick. He's exactly
what you know. He's just withthe idea that I have of what a
(01:03):
Seahawks man is. It's there acall to a team coach Carroll that make
sure that he's grown there. He'sgonna fit in great. He's gonna show
up every day with the art atlunch, Bill, put his work in
and be a great player for you. Well, if hypothetically you had to
submit to the NFL one play, one highlight play for him to get drafted,
(01:23):
what would be that play and whywould you select it? What would
be the characteristics the traits that hewould show on that play that you think
best embodied what he does. Yeah, the one play that would stand out
to me would be to play againstArkansas State Arkansas in twenty twenty one.
They were backed up on about theirfour yard line. We got we had
(01:46):
a call on his man protection,he beat the tackle for a sack,
caused the fumble. One of ourd tackles scooped and scored and it was
a big momentum changer in the game, gave us the lead in the game.
We ended up winning that game onthe road. It was a big
win for our program, and that'sprobably the defining play when I if I
close my eyes and laid down thinkabout Derek's career, that's the one that
sticks out because it was a big, big game for us and a big
(02:08):
game changer. And uh, youknow, he's a team guy, so
I know he takes a lot ofpride in the fact that we won that
game. He mentioned his versatilities, said, he played some stack backer,
inside, outside linebacker. You know, talk about how you used him and
what your fronts look like and howhe played in them. Yeah, So
we played some three down fronts wherehe was an outside backer, we played
(02:30):
some four down fronts where he wasat d N and then, um,
you know, when when you're thattalented. Now we had two other good
pass rushers too, but um,a guy like Derek that they're gonna chip
and double every play. You gotto be creative and move him around and
try to use his skill set.So we would put him at the stack
backer in our third down package andrun some games with him up front,
(02:51):
blitz them, drop him in coverage. The guy just does everything he's coached
to do. He really is adream the coach and d around whatever whatever
role they have for him, initially, he's gonna master it. Well,
Rock, You've been around the gamea long time. Rack Bellentani, who's
now the DC at Florida Atlantic. He was Derek Call's position coach at Auburn
last year, and you see alot of guys come and go in the
NFL. Tell us about what's fairfor fans to expect from Derek Call right
(03:15):
out of the gate. My friend, Wow, you know, I don't
know. I don't want to setthe bar too high for him, but
he's I can tell you this. He's the best player I've ever coached.
He's the best leader I've ever coached, and he's the best person I've ever
had in my meeting room. SoI've got very, very high hopes for
him. I think he's gonna playfor a long time. He's gonna have
a great career. You know,I don't want to make any predictions or
(03:37):
anything like that about this season. The one thing I can't promise you is
that he is gonna show up andhe's gonna work. He's gonna fit into
the culture of the locker room andbe a great teammate. I'm really really
excited. No and my family andI had loved watching the Seahawks when we
were out there, so we stillwatch him, and now we got even
more reason to cheer for him andfollow him. Well, that is really
(03:58):
a chilling advocacy. Really gives memy hair on my back of my neck.
Stand up. That's really cool. But I'm gonna ask you to do
something that maybe like asking you tostand still on hot coals. All right,
I'm gonna ask you to critique himand say, Okay, he's a
second rounder, tell us why hewasn't a top ten pick. He was
(04:18):
first team All SEC is a greatplayer. We can hear your radiant enthusiasm
about him. But if you're justbeing a football guy and you're critiquing,
where does he fall short or andthen tell us is there any room for
improvement on any deficiencies he may have? Wow, that that is like standing
(04:41):
thanks a lot. You know, why why did he fall out of the
top ten? I don't know.I mean there's there's positions of need and
all that stuff. And you know, I watched a lot of those guys
that got drafted ahead of him.I don't you know, Will Anderson is
the best defense player I've ever seenin person, and other than Will I
(05:02):
don't know that Derek's not better thanevery one of them. And uh,
I know he's anxious to prove thaton the field, and now that I
have that opportunity to do that,I think maybe. You know, I've
heard people say he's a little stiff, Well you tell him, tell me
who's not, you know. Idon't, I don't. I don't buy
that. I think I think he'sgonna be a great edge rusher. I
think he's gonna be able to bringa lot of value to a team.
(05:25):
Um. I think when he getssome other pass rushers around them that can
produce from the inside out, Ithink it's gonna make him even more effective.
Um. I don't you know,I don't know. I mean I
think maybe one of the knocks onhim. I don't know this. I'm
not in the staff rooms. Butwhat what what position does he play?
Is he a three four outside backer? Is he for the three defensive end?
(05:46):
Um? You know that they liketo put people in boxes, right,
and Derek is he's a smaller thanthe four three d ns. He's
a little bit bigger. Um.Maybe not quite as quick as some of
the outside backers. You know, what, what role is he really gonna
have? Maybe that dropped his stocka little bit, but again, his
game films for itself. He wentto the Senior Bowl and had a great
week of practice. I went upthere and watched them, and then he
(06:10):
went to the combine and crushed it. So, you know, I don't
know why he'd dropped a little bitto the second round, but man,
I'm just fired up for him.I'm excited for him. He's got a
bright future and I can't wait towatch him well again. Derek Call's possession
coach at Auburn, Rock Bealentoni, who's now the DC at FAU, is
with us on the radio station andRock Before you Go. We heard him
talking to the media here talks abouthow he likes to put trucks together.
(06:30):
I guess he likes to pull trucksapart and then put him back together like
freaking legos. For crying out loud, you got all these guys talking about
hunting and playing golf. When wewhen we finally meet him, Is there
a funny story? Is there kindof an embarrassing story we should bring up
to kind of break the ice withthis kid? Yeah. I don't know
if I should tell those on theair that would give me. Oh,
come on, but I can tellyou this. You know, I was
(06:55):
at Auburn. My family wasn't there. We were My wife was in down
here with our kids in Florida, and had the guys over to eat.
We went to his house to eatat his house and we walk in the
garage and there he's got his bigtruck on his jack and all these parts
laying around in the garage. Idon't know how the hell he does it.
He's he's all into those cars andtrucks, and he likes the fish
and hunt, and it's not notmy style. So whatever works for him.
(07:18):
He's into all that stuff. Aslong as he stays in that and
football and stays out of trumble,I'll be happy for him. Listen,
great stuff, man, appreciate thisrock. Thanks for doing this on short
notice, and I'm sure you're gonnabe thrilled his heck to watch this kid
playing Seattle Man. Thanks, thanksfor jumping on the air with us,
guys. Thanks for having me
