Speaker 1 (00:01):
From the R and R Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio. Now
back to Softie and Dick on your Home for the Huskies,
Krakin and the twelfth Man Sports Radio ninety three point
three KJR FM.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
All right, boys and girls, back here on a busy
Thursday from the five twenty Bar and Grayland Bellevue. Mike
Holmgren joining us at four o'clock. He'll be here in
Poison talking some Hawks with us. Kevin Harlan coming up
at five before cracking wild pregame six thirty, face off
at seven o'clock tonight right here on ninety three to
three KJRFM. But man, the big story of the week,
(00:35):
it takes a lot to bump the Seahawk talk off
the air Dick on this radio show, and Demon Williams
certainly has done that in the last couple of days.
And we cannot think of a better guy to get
on the air. Courtesy a bet online, our friend Danny
Kanell is with us on the radio show. And Danny,
I tell you, man, we were planning having you on
talking about Indiana, Oregon, Ole miss in Miami, and then boom,
(00:58):
Demon Williams just dropped. It's this bomb on college football
that he's in the portal four days after signing an
nil revenue shared deal with you, dub What do you
make of this story man developing here in Seattle.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
I hate it.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
I hate it so much because this is just a
reflection of a system that feels completely broken. I hate
it for Washington. I hate it for Washington fans. I
wouldn't have had any problem whatsoever if Demon Williams just
hit the portal like four thousand other players have, like
two hundred quarterbacks have.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
But the way it's unfolded, it doesn't feel.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
Very professional, like we're describing all these kids as professional athletes.
It doesn't seem like professional decision was made. It seems
like a very immature decision. And I hate it because
I think this really really puts Washington in a tough spot,
because how are you supposed to manage a roster if
the guys you think you have under contract aren't going
(01:59):
to be oh to that contract that they signed on
the dotted line.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
It's ridiculous.
Speaker 4 (02:04):
So now it puts Washington behind the eight ball because
let's say, let's say to Mom Williams had from the
get Gos that I'm hitting the portal you know, they
at least could have had a plan in place as
as opposed to scrambling around and trying to you know,
get visits and try to find the successor to the
Mom Williams.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
It really puts Washington in a tough spot.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
So I hate it, and I think most college football
fans and most college administrators hate it as well. But
until we get some structure, there's absolutely nothing else we
can do about this. Like it's just it's ridiculous to me.
Everything feels like a sham, Like if you can't enforce
these contracts, why do we even have them? Like it
seems totally pointless, and it's just it's a it's a crazy,
(02:46):
crazy messed up college football world right now.
Speaker 5 (02:49):
Well, because this is a unique situation, in such a
high profile situation with a high profile player, do you
think this could be the spark for legislation to finally
happen to instagate a CBA, a player's union actually rules
of the road in college football.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
I hope so, because as you like, and I think
Dick can make a good point because a year ago
we saw this happen and it kind of flew under
the radar because it wasn't a quarterback who was making
four million bucks. It was a you know, defensive player
for Wisconsin that had signed on the dotted line, went
to Miami. And guess who's been a great player for
Miami this season, Xavier Lucas. You know, nothing ever came
(03:28):
of that, You know nothing. I don't think he was
held liable. There wasn't any I don't think any money
was spent. It just kind of went away. It died
slowly and softly, and no one really paid attention to it.
I've had an argument with my buddies on Cover three,
Bud Elliott and Tom Pornelli, who do a great job
on the Cover three podcast with me there.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
They have the line of thinking that.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
The coaches, because I guarantee you the coaches are fed up,
and I've heard more and more coaches say we need
a CBA, we need we need more structure.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
They're of the mindset that the.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Schools are making so much money and they're able to
have the system in place where a lot of this
money is coming from boosters and you're having fans and
nil collectives foot the bill for your employees essentially is
what they are.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
So it's really not they're not going to be willing
to budge.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
So then it looks like, all right, do we have
to have Congress or some you know, do we have
to have the politician step in to get some structure
or anti trust exemption for college football?
Speaker 3 (04:28):
I don't really want.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
That, But everyone's looking around, and everyone acknowledges the problems
that are out there, and yet no one's coming up
with solutions, right, so we keep hearing these horror stories.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Well, Dandy Canal's with us courtesy have bet online dot Ag.
Check them out for the updated college football Playoffs, semi
final game, championship lines, along with a plethora of CFP props.
I mean, look, I just I keep coming up with
these questions and then I keep catching myself going, God, Dave,
(04:58):
you just sound naive, Like, where the hell's Greg Saki
right in this whole thing? The commissioner of the SEC.
Why is he allowing one of his member institutions to
do something like this? They just don't want to be
told what to do. They don't want to, you know,
police each other. I mean, you talk about the oversight
and the governance, Danny and I totally agree with that,
(05:20):
but where the hell are the conference commissioners agreeing with
each other. We're going to respect each other's contracts.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
That's the and so I think they would all love
to see that, and that would be their advice to
each other. But unfortunately they're not the agents or the
attorneys that are representing these players that are also, by
the way, making a boat lawed off a ten or
twenty percent commission in some cases, which is astronomical compared
to NFL players. That they say, I mean, could I
(05:50):
guarantee the conversations happening behind closed doors? Or can we
enforce these contracts like we thought we could? And quickly
they're finding out they can't. So and then I mean,
if you're Greg Sank in this case, you're pulling a
great player from the Big Ten into the SEC.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
So how upset are you? You know?
Speaker 4 (06:07):
But it will come back to bite them because there
are players going all over there, moving in between conferences,
and I think you know, it'd be one thing if
they were moving, the player was moving in conference, you'd
be able to enforce it.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
But it almost hurts them because everyone's out for.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
Their own interest The SEC is out for their own interests.
Big Ten is out for then and no one's looking
out for the collective good of the sport, and that's
why it's all getting screwed up.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
Well, the names out there, you know, it seems like
there's a short list of names if you just look
at the transfer portal that could actually be good enough
to quarterback a team like Washington. But should that list
be small? I mean, shouldn't every quarterback in the country
that doesn't have a signed deal for next year be
on list Jedfish's list.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Or the ones that do have a signed deal.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Man, Yes, that's a great.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
Point, and that that's one hundred percent accurate, Like, why
not look at some of these sec quarterbacks that have
already signed and possibly kicked the tires on them? I would,
especially after what we've learned. I think there's a couple.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Of things that are good of this.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
One is that now at least people know Washington's willing
to pay for a million bucks, like you've got that
kind of set for your quarterback. So there's a good
market that's out there, So yeah, I think they should
be shopping around. Unfortunately, a lot of those other deals
that have already been made, those players are happy and settled.
They kind of already made that decision, and I think
(07:24):
it is rare that we saw the case with Demon
where he was made up his mind and then switched.
I think most of these other quarterbacks are probably happy
with their landing spots, happy with the money they're making,
and are looking at things and saying, why would I
want to go anywhere else? I'm good now, And they
probably don't want to look like I think this makes
Demon Williams look bad, like from a pr perspective, from
(07:46):
a teammate perspective, like you, like you bailed on your team.
You bailed on your coaches when you gave them your word,
and that is different. That's why again, if DMan just
entered the portal on January twod when it opened, I
would never say that everyone enters the portal like I
get it right. But to do this, I think it's
a very bad look. I think it's a bad look
(08:07):
for him for his representation.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
And yet no one will remember. No one's going to.
Speaker 4 (08:12):
Criticize him, you know, if he goes and tears it up, like,
no one's gonna have any issue with that.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
So it's just it's it's kind of the landscape right.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Well, there's I've never heard Danny and again Danny canell
with us Curtisy have bet online dot ag. I've never
heard Danny a head coach slobber over a quarterback more
than Jedfish did Demon Williams. And I'm not talking about
this year. I'm talking about last year when he was
backing up on Rogers. Jedfish would take the podium and
he would talk about the next face of the program
is Demond. He's going to go to New York blah
(08:41):
blah blah, and he's not even playing. He's backing up
will Rogers, and he is slobbering over Demon Williams to
get him to stay, to get him to understand how
big a piece of the pie he was going to be.
And then Demon Williams just stabs him right in the
fricking neck. Man, So I agree that you. I mean
it makes him look terrible. I mean you obviously, as
a pro is this gonna matter in the NFL if
(09:04):
Demon Williams can play? Is this gonna matter one lick
when it comes to his evaluation?
Speaker 4 (09:11):
Unfortunately, No, And that's one thing where we've all lost
our minds and no one. Everyone's out for themselves. There
is no team aspect, there is no I'm gonna make
a sacrifice for the team over myself. I mean, look
look at the narrative when players starting sitting out bulls,
(09:31):
you know, because they had to prepare for the NFL draft,
and it was like meaningless games. I hated that. I
thought those were selfish moves. But in the context of, well,
you have to make a business decision and you gotta
do you got to look out for your future, there
is some truth in that, but no one everyone in
the national media was like, yeah, we get it, instead
(09:53):
of brushing these players, which they should have. And if
I was an NFL team, I would look into it
and be like, I don't know what if that guy
as a contract year we are, you know, miss out
in the playoffs, is gonna shut it down for the
last four games? Probably, But like, but the talent is
there and the teams And I blame the NFL too,
because they haven't They haven't blinked an eye, so probably
(10:14):
this is another situation where they won't blink an eye.
If Demal Williams goes out there and lights it up
next year and puts up big numbers, they will not
even hesitate on this. I would if I was a
general manager. I think this is like wall, right, what
is this player all about?
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Like?
Speaker 4 (10:28):
What is he about making the most money and securing
the bag, because that's sure what it feels like. Or
is he about like you were just saying, like Jetfish
gave him his opportunity, bolted him up, like, helped him
elevate his game to where he was, and then you
stabbed it in them back again. This is all about
because he did agree to come back and change his mind.
(10:48):
That's the only reason we're talking about it the way
we are. But I do think it is worth criticism
and questioning somebody's character that they would make a decision
like this.
Speaker 5 (10:57):
Bubar Buell is a guy that was supposed to be
visiting Washington this week. There are three other guys that
along with that are ranked right along with Williams. If
you look at two four seven in the Portal Lagway
Rayola Deuce Night, and then there's Sam Levitt up at
the top, he's listened as the number one guy.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Is there is there a guy on that.
Speaker 5 (11:14):
List or maybe somebody else that you think would that
you really like when you watch them play.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Boy, They're all interesting. I would say, Deuce night.
Speaker 4 (11:24):
For me, probably is the most intriguing because I think
there could be a ton of upside and we don't
know really what he's all about. And he played pretty
good in the little time we saw them. Where the
other quarterback, DJ Lagway's got some baggage. That's more of
a reclamation project, right.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
He's got a limit.
Speaker 4 (11:43):
I think his confidence has been rattled, and maybe that's
a reason whereas he goes from far as Florid as
he can to go out to Washington, get a new
new landscape, you know, kind of start over. Bo privol
is somebody that I do think fits offensively, is pretty mobile,
is pretty athletic. He didn't throw it great at Miszoo,
like he's need to take a next step, and he
was hurt a little bit. Sam Levitt, I do think
(12:05):
is probably the most interesting case study.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
But if you want to go look at somebody.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
Else who also had a couple questionable things that he did,
Like he didn't show up to his team awards dinner
at the end of the year in Arizona State, like
what type, and I think a lot of its teammates
were upset they didn't show up. Granted that's like today's player,
but I want somebody who's a little bit more about
the team.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
So I guess of all these guys.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
I kind of like deuced night because I don't feel
like there's any baggage yet all these players. Dylan Ryle
is somebody who I think is more hype than substance.
You know, his play was not spectacular. He's not real mobile,
Like he's not a running quarterback, so he's not going
to give you that element. He's more traditional as a
pocket passer, you know. So, and I think he's somebody
(12:48):
who went he went to four different high schools and
he's already transferring. Like all these quarterbacks have baggage nowadays,
it's just a matter of which ones you can kind
of deal with and maximize for one year.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Just to me, And maybe I'm being an old fifty
two year old petty boob here, Danny, But they all
all right there with you. Yeah, you all start at
the top. They're all quitters, every single one. They all
quit their team. Now now you gotta find out why
they quit, right, did did they?
Speaker 3 (13:11):
Some of them right?
Speaker 2 (13:12):
They some reason, bad reason whatever, right, exactly right?
Speaker 4 (13:16):
And some of them, like I can pretty much you know,
I don't want to report anything, but I do think
John Summraw, the new Kent Hoods coach at Florida, had
a meeting with DJ Lagway and was like, we're going
in a different direction. You can come back if you want.
But you know, when you hear that, as a quarterback,
it's essentially.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Getting cut, right.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
That's probably what happened at Missouri with Bo Privula too,
Like Matt Zohler's is the next quarterback, Like they kind
of liked what they saw of him, so and or
they asked all these quarterbacks to take massive pay cuts,
and those all these guys are like, not me.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
I'm not going to take a pay cut.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
Somebody else is willing to pay me more than I
was making, So why wouldn't I go?
Speaker 3 (13:51):
So, yeah, you know.
Speaker 4 (13:52):
It's really harder to evaluate, you know, these players.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Danny Canal, I know, we got to run here in
a minute. Dick's got one more for you as well,
Danny Curtissey be online, do ag when it comes to
college football? What's the point of the NCAA anymore?
Speaker 4 (14:07):
Well, that's ultimately when we like, if it gets loud
enough and the right people get upset, maybe it's the
conference commissioners, maybe it's the head coaches coaches, maybe it's
the university presidents. But I do think when we actually
get the structure that we need in place, it's when
football breaks away from the NCAA and they have their
(14:28):
own entity that is separate from college basketball and college
baseball and all the non revenue sports, and they fund
themselves and they pay the players, and they have a
collectively bargained asset, and then the NCAA guess what they
can do. They can go back to do what they
were supposed to do all along, which is, you know,
set up championships and force eligibility rules. They are in
so over their head and that sport has moved them
(14:50):
so far by a lot.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
Of it's their own doing.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
Like they did not evolve with the landscape and with
the money, so they found themselves in this position. But
I do feel like I probably I would say within
five years, we will get that separation. The question is.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
How many teams go with that new league. How many
teams do break away?
Speaker 4 (15:09):
Like I feel really good about forty, but is it
as big as sixty?
Speaker 3 (15:14):
Is it seventy?
Speaker 4 (15:14):
And you see that breakaway, that's the only question to
me is how many teams get to break away in
that new college football that we're gonna see, I think
within five years.
Speaker 5 (15:24):
Wrapping things up with Danny Canell, there's four teams left
this year and they all play in the next twenty
four hours. So Miami and Old miss getting set in
about a couple hours to play. Give us your thoughts
on that one, and then Oregon and Indiana tomorrow, all
of us here in Seattle rooting for the Hoosiers.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
Yeah, yeah, of course you are right in the Oregon.
That's a big rivalry game right there. I do like Miami.
I think Miami is I liked him coming into this playoff.
I had him all the way to the championship game.
So I'm gonna stick with that pick. Although I thought
they were gonna go through Georgia Ole Missus quarterback makes
me nervous.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
He's really elusive.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
But Miami's offensive and defensive line, and specifically their defensive
line with the two edge rushers, which are really nasty,
they're fast.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
I think they can track down Todd Chambliss.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
I think Miami controls the time of possession, you know,
wins the game. The physicality and the line of scrimmage,
and I do think Miami wins and covers and then
on the other one. So I picked Oregon coming into
this twelve team playoff to win it all. I thought
they were coming together at.
Speaker 3 (16:26):
The right time.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
But I was just in Miami and I just watched
their offense and their defense was awesome. But I keep
waiting for their offense to take the next step, and
they have not had a great performance all season long,
and now they're supposed to do it against Indiana.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
Ye, I don't trust them to do that now. I
do like.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
Oregon with the three and a half points because I
think it's gonna be a defensive game.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
I like the under in that game.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
I think it'll be more similar to what we saw
in the Big Ten championship game when Indiana Ohio State
were lower scoring than it would be as far as
Indiana lighting up Alabama, I'm gonna say mostly defense of
the fair a lower scoring game. So I like the
under and I do like the Ducks with the points.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
All right, man, hope you're wrong on that, Big boys though.
Speaker 6 (17:11):
Yeah yeah, yeah, oh no, you do, Yeah, you're right.
Just want the points, okay, yeah, good? You don't get
you know what, you don't give a damn who wins
and loses. You want to just catch that ticket. I
get all right, Danny, great stuff man, love having you on.
Enjoy the game tonight and tomorrow, and we'll talk soon.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
Base Man Softie appreciate it. Guys, keep talking to you, all.
