into this with a free agency. Give us kind of
just your reaction your mood is a Seahawks fan to
how the first few days of free agency have gone
for the Seahawks.

Well, I think it's probably mirrors the team.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
To be honest, I think that there's gonna be a
lot of people that say, hey, man, what are the
Seahawks doing? What's John Schneider and Mike McDonald doing up there?
Are they rebuilding? Are they resetting?
Speaker 5 (01:11):
This wasn't their plans.

They planned to have Geno Smith back, They planned to
have DK metcalf back. Those two guys decided they didn't
want to be here, and so, you know, one of
the things John Schneider said today that I thought was
very telling and I think Seahawks fans can relate to,
is they want people here who want to be here.
And the fact of the matter is as much as
people love Geno Smith or don't, as much as people

love Dk Metcalf or don't, it comes down to Mike
McDonald's the coach. He took this team to ten wins
last year. He produced a top ten defense for a
group that had been falling through the floor for a decade.
And if people aren't bought in, then it's it's you know,
thanks for your service and.

So now you got a chance for Mike McDonald to
shape this culture in this locker room, and you got
a chance for new leaders to step up and new
identities to form.

Kind of seems like there was a different level of
frustration expressed by John Schneider when he talked about DK
versus Geno. I mean, the quote on DK was we
want guys who want to be here, and the quote
on Geno was we couldn't get a deal done. So
did can you kind of feel that there was a
little bit of more angst toward DK than there was
towards Gino.

I mean, I think I think that the thing with
DK metcalf is probably, you know, it might not be new,
and they might have been dealing with this for some time,
who knows, but you know, you heard from John Schneider
in this when they asked about Okay, they made an
extension offer to Gino Smith. They didn't really hear back,
and it was a pretty quick, pretty quick negotiation, And

I think in that response he was telling everybody that
Gina wasn't really interested in being here and the offer
that they made was going to be probably comparatible what
he gets down in Las Vegas.

Well, what was the offer? Do we know what they
offered him? Because we're here and he'll get between forty
and forty five with Vegas. You think the Hawks offered that.

I do believe they offered that.

And that's something that Bob Candota reported in the Seattle
Times multiple times last week. It kind of went under
the radar that that was a report because everyone nationally
was going with the Albert Breer report that it was
just thirty five. But Bob reported it multiple times, and
I don't think that's by accident. So you know, this
is not a case where John Schneider, I think pushed

Genoil out. I think it's a case where these guys
were ready to play somewhere else. And if Pete Carroll
hadn't been hired as the coach in Las Vegas, if
Tom Brady hadn't been part owner of the Raiders, I
think Gino Smith might still be here because I'm not
sure there's another place where he would have landed.

No, it's certainly possible.

I was just gonna say it's certainly possible with the
Gino Smith just has so much affinity for Pete Carroll
that he wanted to go play for him period end

And there's a long way to go, a lot can happen,
But how frustrated, Brian are you at this very minute?
The Seahawks have not really yet to address their offensive
line with any real significant impact.

It's frustrating.

And it's not frustration that's born of this offseason. It's
a frustration that's born of a decade of off seasons
of you know, not really going after that position and
with as much vigor as I think Seahawks fans would
have liked to have seen. And you know, you get
you get tired of hearing and I know fans do
it as well that I talked to they've you know,

you hear about trenches. We heard about trenches three years ago,
four years ago from Pete Carroll and from John Schneider.
And on defense, I think they deserve credit, Jonas, you
know who's here.

They've they've remade.

If we had this conversation three years ago, we'd say
the defensive line and the offensive line are bad. Now
I think the defensive line is one of the best
in the NFL and part of a really good up
and coming d defense.

And I think they've.

Now turned their attention to the offense. But you know,
you look at this group and Will Fries, you know,
that was their one guy that they thought was a
good fit and could really add something, and they were
going to sign him, but he didn't want to wait
for a physical. And when you're going to commit that
kind of money to a player, I think it's understandable
to say, let's check on this injury before. And I
(05:22):
asked him about the Joe Tooney trade. To me, that's
the even bigger like for a twenty twenty six fourth
round pick. And you know, Schneider kind of intimated that
they would have done something like that potentially, but that
deal just happened really fast and they didn't get an
opportunity to really get into bidding.
Speaker 6 (05:38):
Bron asking one more on Gino, I mean, based upon
that forty to forty five million dollar off for per
year for two years that Kendota was was tweeting about,
did Gino save the Seahawks from themselves? Because we just
got Sam Darnold for thirty three million, which I feel
is a better quarterback than what we would have gotten
for forty forty to forty five.

And you know it's possible. I think you're betting on
the come with with Sam Donald in that case, because
Sam Donald, as much as he had a much better
statistical season than Gino Smith, there's no question last season
Sam Donald has not produced or demonstrated the kind of
skills that Gino Smith has. And I know that that's

troubling for some Seahawks fans, but it's the truth. If
you look at the things that Geno Smith's been able
to do, the throws he can make, the consistency has had,
the way he's able to mitigate pressure, that's not something
Sam Donald has a lot of history doing. So they're
betting that he's twenty seven and can come up and
do that. But honestly, Dick, I look at the DK
things more of potentially him saving the.

Seahawks from themselves, because you.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Know how many third third contract receivers that you're paying
thirty million dollars to, you know, you feel good about
at the end of that contract. And look at the
teams that were at the end, most of the teams
they weren't receiver driven teams.

So I think that.

Could potentially be a good thing for this organization over time.

Well Brown will go back to the offensive line in
a second, But let me just get you on record, right,
because there's there's there's two camps in Seattle, and most
of them show their faces on Twitter, by the way. Okay,
two camps in Seattle. One that the Seahawks upgraded at quarterback.
Another that says that they made a horrible mistake and
they're worse off today than they were a week ago.

Well, I think that's just a false dichotomy, because that's
that's implying that.

The Seahawks had a choice.

Are they better at quarterback today than they were a
week ago, whether they had a choice or not.

I was actually a question I wanted to get in
with John, but we ran, we ran a little short
there and he would wouldn't really give us much on
his draft strategy anyway. But I think when I talked
to John Schneider at the combine and I asked.

Him about that, like.

They he really wants a quarterback to fall to them.
They want a quarterback that they like. They're not going
to just take one to take one. But I think
there's some pretty interesting guys in this draft. I think
Jackson Darts one. I think Tyler Shuck is a guy
that most people don't know as well is another one
I think is pretty promising. And then there's Quinn Ewers,
who I'm not a big fan of, but there is

some links between him and John. People seem to think
he might like him, and he shares the same agent
as Byron Murphy, who happens to be, you know, good
buddies with John. So those are three names that I'd
keep an eye on if I was a Seahawks fan.
And I think with the five picks in the first
ninety two, they do not have some ammunition to move
around the draft board if they see someone they really like.

No, I think you're right.

I mean there's Sam Howell saying this thing with Sam
Darnold just really shouldn't impact them.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
What's soever know that?

What about what about a wide receiver and now being
in play at number eighteen. I mean, obviously you got
Jackson spent thing Jigba and I don't know what your
thoughts are and Marcus Valdez scandling, but the idea of
taking a receiver high in the draft, now you know what, I'll.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
Tell you my perspective there. Guys, I think that would
be a massive mistake. I think that'd be a massive mistake.
You don't go from a very receiver oriented cap situation
and offense situation and then go and spend your eighteenth
pick on a receiver. I don't think there's a receiver
that you have to do that with. And in fact,
I think the receivers that best fit this offense are
(09:36):
guys you can get day two. I think Jayden Higgins
from Iowa State, Jalen Nole, who I know the Seahawks
met with at the combine, are great options. Jack Besh
is a really interesting option, and they're looking for guys
that not only are good receivers, but are going to
be able to block in the run game That actually
matters here. So I don't think you have to spend
your first round pick there. I think there's higher value targets,

And honestly, with the way free agency has gone, they
really are going to have to go offensive line.
Speaker 5 (10:01):
I think they're a little bit cornered now. They can't wait.

I don't think till fifty to take their first offensive lineman.

In this draft.

Yeah, no, totally agree, but that still is what a
month and a half away. So the free agent targets,
like if Brad Burry does get released, for example, or
Jackson Dick, maybe you the idea of trading a draft
pick to make sure that you get Brad Berry before
he hits the free agent market. Becton, Jenkins, are there
guys that you've got that you have your eye on
that you think they should try and grab before drafting?

You know what I mean? I think a lot of
people are going to talk about Makai Becton, But my
understanding is this is a guy that John Benton, the
offensive line coach, has experience with, and if they really
wanted them, they'd already be targeting him, and I don't
think that's going to happen. I'm not sure he's at
three hundred and sixty three pounds a good fit for an.

Outside zone team anyway.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
You know, Kevin Zeitler signs with Tennessee, plays in in
you know, close to home where his family lives, and
you know, I think Kevin Jenkins is not going to
be the guy either, So I think you're talking to
out guys like Lucas Patrick is the name I will
put out there as somebody who played with the Saints
last year under John Benton, had played with the Packers before,

has had experience at center and guard, and I don't
think he's going to be the answer, but I think
he's a guy that I wouldn't be surprised if they
take a long look at. I think that's the level
of player they're probably going to be looking at ahead
of the draft, because guys, there's just there's not a
savior out there at this point for that position.

It's it's been pretty picked over.

So you mentioned the Saints there.

I saw the MVS play that you posted yesterday on Twitter,
and I was actually kind of surprised.

I didn't realize he still had those wheels.

I was right there with you, Dick, I like went,
I was like, all right, let's see what he looks like.
And it gives me an excuse to look at Clint
kuby CK's offense as well, and I was like whoa,
as like, Okay, there's a seventy one yard play, they touchdown,
there's a sixty seven yard play, there's a forty yard,
a thirty nine yard and this guy had four touchdowns
in eight starts with the Saints, the most he's ever
had in the season was and that's over a.

Sixteen to seventeen game season. So something really clicked.

And when we talked to him today at the vMac,
he just said that I wouldn't be here probably if
it wasn't for Klint Kubiak. He really feels like he
found something in that offense that fits his game. And
you know, I had to stop clipping after a while
because there were so many big plays that he was
making for that team. So I think that guy, you know,
a five and a half million I think fans would
be pretty happy to have him as opposed to you know,

some of these other guys that are, you know.

Fifteen million dollars. But at the same time, I would not.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Be surprised if Cooper cup is one of the next
moves that comes along.

Yeah, Well, going back to MVS for a second, is
he a satisfactory number two receiver in your opinion for
this team?
Speaker 1 (12:43):
You know, I think by the definition of number two, no,
I don't think that's how he's going to be used.
I think he's probably more like a number three receiver.
But I think that that in this offense might be
like a misleading term. I think that they have roles.
There's players that they want to be able to take
the top off, and they're gonna use them in certain ways.
There's gonna be players that they want to use kind

of in the crysto'lave role that I think will be
the JSN role that is gonna get the primary bulk
of the targets. And I think there's some other things,
a lot of crossers over the middle. So this is
pretty much, you know, a two receiver offense for the
most part. But I think there's times when they go
to three receivers that these guys are all gonna play
in different spots. JSN will not just be a slot receiver.
(13:24):
I think they'll play him on the outside. MVS last
year similar thing, and I wouldn't be shocked if they
add one more through free agency.
Speaker 6 (13:31):
If it is Cup, I mean, are you comfortable with
two smaller receivers playing. I mean, there's no like big time,
throw it up, go get it type guy. If you've
got Cup on one side and JSN on one.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
Side, yeah, I mean when those two guys are in there,
Obviously MBS has some height and some sides to him.
Speaker 5 (13:48):
But yeah.

One of the things I like about Cup and I
like him as a fit for this a couple of things. One,
he's actually a pretty willing blocker. And I know people
don't get excited when we're talking about receivers blocking, but
you know, it's going to take ten guys to create
the run game that this team wants and needs, and
that's going to take pressure off that offensive line and cuts.

The guy that is gonna would have a big name,
and the fact that he's willing to put his nose
in there, I think would speak a lot.

I also think that you know, you.

Just lost Tyler Lockett, you just lost you know.

DK Metcaltino Smith.

These are big voices on the offense. Oldest guy on
offense right now is twenty seven. The longest tenure is
three years. I think you're gonna having a guy like
Cooper cuff In there who's from Washington, who's been to
a Super Bowl. I think would be helpful in kind
of creating some new leadership along those lines.

Man, Yeah, I just finished talking to him, and I
think Seahawks fans are gonna love this guy.

he's gonna hang it up or keep going now with

He feels like he's got a lot left to offer.
And he had a message to Cowboys fans as well.
But I saw that they're not going to win a
Super Bowl there. He's planning to do it here.

So yeah, I think this guy. You combine him his
his especially his run defense, but everything he does and
having that in the room with boy Mafe and Derek Hall.
You know, I think that's going to be a big
ad and and I think the combination with him and
Leonard Williams and and Byron Murphy and Jared Reid, it's
probably as talented and disruptive of a group that they've

the even bigger like for a twenty twenty six fourth
round pick. And you know, Schneider kind of intimated that
they would have done something like that potentially, but that
deal just happened really fast and they didn't get an
opportunity to really get into bidding.
Speaker 6 (05:38):
Bron asking one more on Gino, I mean, based upon
that forty to forty five million dollar off for per
year for two years that Kendota was was tweeting about,
did Gino save the Seahawks from themselves? Because we just
got Sam Darnold for thirty three million, which I feel
is a better quarterback than what we would have gotten
for forty forty to forty five.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
And you know it's possible. I think you're betting on
the come with with Sam Donald in that case, because
Sam Donald, as much as he had a much better
statistical season than Gino Smith, there's no question last season
Sam Donald has not produced or demonstrated the kind of
skills that Gino Smith has. And I know that that's
(06:21):
troubling for some Seahawks fans, but it's the truth. If
you look at the things that Geno Smith's been able
to do, the throws he can make, the consistency has had,
the way he's able to mitigate pressure, that's not something
Sam Donald has a lot of history doing. So they're
betting that he's twenty seven and can come up and
do that. But honestly, Dick, I look at the DK
things more of potentially him saving the.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Seahawks from themselves, because you.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Know how many third third contract receivers that you're paying
thirty million dollars to, you know, you feel good about
at the end of that contract. And look at the
teams that were at the end, most of the teams
they weren't receiver driven teams.
Speaker 5 (06:57):
So I think that.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
Could potentially be a good thing for this organization over time.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Well Brown will go back to the offensive line in
a second, But let me just get you on record, right,
because there's there's there's two camps in Seattle, and most
of them show their faces on Twitter, by the way. Okay,
two camps in Seattle. One that the Seahawks upgraded at quarterback.
Another that says that they made a horrible mistake and
they're worse off today than they were a week ago.

What camp, are you win at quarterback?
Speaker 6 (07:27):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Well, I think that's just a false dichotomy, because that's
that's implying that.
Speaker 5 (07:33):
The Seahawks had a choice.

No, no, no, you know, just just just just forget
all that. Are they are they?
Speaker 4 (07:40):
Are they better at quarterback today than they were a
week ago, whether they had a choice or not.

Are they better?

Is the quarterback position more talented today than it was
a week ago?
Speaker 5 (07:50):
No? I don't believe it is.
Speaker 6 (07:53):
How does this change or does it change how they
viewed drafting a quarterback next month?

I don't think it will change that.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
I was actually a question I wanted to get in
with John, but we ran, we ran a little short
there and he would wouldn't really give us much on
his draft strategy anyway. But I think when I talked
to John Schneider at the combine and I asked.
Speaker 5 (08:14):
Him about that, like.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
They he really wants a quarterback to fall to them.
They want a quarterback that they like. They're not going
to just take one to take one. But I think
there's some pretty interesting guys in this draft. I think
Jackson Darts one. I think Tyler Shuck is a guy
that most people don't know as well is another one
I think is pretty promising. And then there's Quinn Ewers,
who I'm not a big fan of, but there is
(08:35):
some links between him and John. People seem to think
he might like him, and he shares the same agent
as Byron Murphy, who happens to be, you know, good
buddies with John. So those are three names that I'd
keep an eye on if I was a Seahawks fan.
And I think with the five picks in the first
ninety two, they do not have some ammunition to move
around the draft board if they see someone they really like.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
No, I think you're right.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
I mean there's Sam Howell saying this thing with Sam
Darnold just really shouldn't impact them.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
What's soever know that?
Speaker 4 (09:00):
What about what about a wide receiver and now being
in play at number eighteen. I mean, obviously you got
Jackson spent thing Jigba and I don't know what your
thoughts are and Marcus Valdez scandling, but the idea of
taking a receiver high in the draft, now you know what, I'll.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
Tell you my perspective there. Guys, I think that would
be a massive mistake. I think that'd be a massive mistake.
You don't go from a very receiver oriented cap situation
and offense situation and then go and spend your eighteenth
pick on a receiver. I don't think there's a receiver
that you have to do that with. And in fact,
I think the receivers that best fit this offense are
(09:36):
guys you can get day two. I think Jayden Higgins
from Iowa State, Jalen Nole, who I know the Seahawks
met with at the combine, are great options. Jack Besh
is a really interesting option, and they're looking for guys
that not only are good receivers, but are going to
be able to block in the run game That actually
matters here. So I don't think you have to spend
your first round pick there. I think there's higher value targets,
(09:57):
And honestly, with the way free agency has gone, they
really are going to have to go offensive line.
Speaker 5 (10:01):
I think they're a little bit cornered now. They can't wait.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
I don't think till fifty to take their first offensive lineman.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
In this draft.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
Yeah, no, totally agree, but that still is what a
month and a half away. So the free agent targets,
like if Brad Burry does get released, for example, or
Jackson Dick, maybe you the idea of trading a draft
pick to make sure that you get Brad Berry before
he hits the free agent market. Becton, Jenkins, are there
guys that you've got that you have your eye on
that you think they should try and grab before drafting?
Speaker 1 (10:31):
You know what I mean? I think a lot of
people are going to talk about Makai Becton, But my
understanding is this is a guy that John Benton, the
offensive line coach, has experience with, and if they really
wanted them, they'd already be targeting him, and I don't
think that's going to happen. I'm not sure he's at
three hundred and sixty three pounds a good fit for an.
Speaker 5 (10:46):
Outside zone team anyway.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
You know, Kevin Zeitler signs with Tennessee, plays in in
you know, close to home where his family lives, and
you know, I think Kevin Jenkins is not going to
be the guy either, So I think you're talking to
out guys like Lucas Patrick is the name I will
put out there as somebody who played with the Saints
last year under John Benton, had played with the Packers before,
(11:10):
has had experience at center and guard, and I don't
think he's going to be the answer, but I think
he's a guy that I wouldn't be surprised if they
take a long look at. I think that's the level
of player they're probably going to be looking at ahead
of the draft, because guys, there's just there's not a
savior out there at this point for that position.
Speaker 5 (11:28):
It's it's been pretty picked over.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
So you mentioned the Saints there.
Speaker 6 (11:30):
I saw the MVS play that you posted yesterday on Twitter,
and I was actually kind of surprised.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
I didn't realize he still had those wheels.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
I was right there with you, Dick, I like went,
I was like, all right, let's see what he looks like.
And it gives me an excuse to look at Clint
kuby CK's offense as well, and I was like whoa,
as like, Okay, there's a seventy one yard play, they touchdown,
there's a sixty seven yard play, there's a forty yard,
a thirty nine yard and this guy had four touchdowns
in eight starts with the Saints, the most he's ever
had in the season was and that's over a.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
Sixteen to seventeen game season. So something really clicked.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
And when we talked to him today at the vMac,
he just said that I wouldn't be here probably if
it wasn't for Klint Kubiak. He really feels like he
found something in that offense that fits his game. And
you know, I had to stop clipping after a while
because there were so many big plays that he was
making for that team. So I think that guy, you know,
a five and a half million I think fans would
be pretty happy to have him as opposed to you know,
(12:25):
some of these other guys that are, you know.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
Fifteen million dollars. But at the same time, I would not.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Be surprised if Cooper cup is one of the next
moves that comes along.
Speaker 4 (12:34):
Yeah, Well, going back to MVS for a second, is
he a satisfactory number two receiver in your opinion for
this team?
Speaker 1 (12:43):
You know, I think by the definition of number two, no,
I don't think that's how he's going to be used.
I think he's probably more like a number three receiver.
But I think that that in this offense might be
like a misleading term. I think that they have roles.
There's players that they want to be able to take
the top off, and they're gonna use them in certain ways.
There's gonna be players that they want to use kind
(13:04):
of in the crysto'lave role that I think will be
the JSN role that is gonna get the primary bulk
of the targets. And I think there's some other things,
a lot of crossers over the middle. So this is
pretty much, you know, a two receiver offense for the
most part. But I think there's times when they go
to three receivers that these guys are all gonna play
in different spots. JSN will not just be a slot receiver.
(13:24):
I think they'll play him on the outside. MVS last
year similar thing, and I wouldn't be shocked if they
add one more through free agency.
Speaker 6 (13:31):
If it is Cup, I mean, are you comfortable with
two smaller receivers playing. I mean, there's no like big time,
throw it up, go get it type guy. If you've
got Cup on one side and JSN on one.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
Side, yeah, I mean when those two guys are in there,
Obviously MBS has some height and some sides to him.
Speaker 5 (13:48):
But yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
One of the things I like about Cup and I
like him as a fit for this a couple of things. One,
he's actually a pretty willing blocker. And I know people
don't get excited when we're talking about receivers blocking, but
you know, it's going to take ten guys to create
the run game that this team wants and needs, and
that's going to take pressure off that offensive line and cuts.
(14:11):
The guy that is gonna would have a big name,
and the fact that he's willing to put his nose
in there, I think would speak a lot.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
I also think that you know, you.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
Just lost Tyler Lockett, you just lost you know.
Speaker 5 (14:21):
DK Metcaltino Smith.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
These are big voices on the offense. Oldest guy on
offense right now is twenty seven. The longest tenure is
three years. I think you're gonna having a guy like
Cooper cuff In there who's from Washington, who's been to
a Super Bowl. I think would be helpful in kind
of creating some new leadership along those lines.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
All right, Brian, before you go, what about DeMarcus Lawrence.
Your thoughts on signing him?
Speaker 1 (14:45):
Man, Yeah, I just finished talking to him, and I
think Seahawks fans are gonna love this guy.
Speaker 5 (14:50):
And one of the things.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
He told me is if Aden Dirty wasn't here.
Speaker 5 (14:56):
He wouldn't be here, right. So that's two straight years that.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
And Dirty has recruited a former Cowboys lineman last year
with Jonathan Hankins. This year it is DeMarcus Lawrence to Seattle,
and you know, he contemplated whether or not, you know,
he's gonna hang it up or keep going now with
a conversation he had, but.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
He feels like he's got a lot left to offer.
And he had a message to Cowboys fans as well.
But I saw that they're not going to win a
Super Bowl there. He's planning to do it here.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
So yeah, I think this guy. You combine him his
his especially his run defense, but everything he does and
having that in the room with boy Mafe and Derek Hall.
You know, I think that's going to be a big
ad and and I think the combination with him and
Leonard Williams and and Byron Murphy and Jared Reid, it's
probably as talented and disruptive of a group that they've

had on that side of the ball in a decade.
Speaker 5 (15:54):
Yeah, so yeah, it should be fun to watch.

Well, he's right about the Cowboys because the Hawks have
been to three of them since they had been to
their last one, by the way, so the odds are
pretty good.
