Speaker 3 (00:48):
Hugh Millen joining us right now on the radio program.
How are you, man? What's happening? I'm doing well. Lots
of stuff to talk about here.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
Why don't we first of all talk about the opponent
the Seahawks will face Tomight. I know for the thirty
third team a couple of weeks ago. This is great timing.
You actually were asked to do a presentation on cam Ward.
Maybe you drew a short straw. I have no idea, right,
but you saw this guy, you studied him. The Titans, dude,
have nine total touchdowns as a freaking team, which is amazing.

(01:18):
They got six passing touchdowns on the ear. Everything about
this football team looks to be terrible, including the offense.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
So what do you see when you see cam Ward?

Speaker 5 (01:26):
Well, I see a guy that has a very quick
release and a big arm. He has an ability. You know,
his best route is the seam route, and he showed
that in college. He's shown that here with Tennessee. And
so there's a talented guy, but he just has nothing
around them. Their left tackles bad, right tackles worst, no

(01:47):
tight ends. Calvin Ridley was you know in the thirty
third team they have blue, red, purple, and you think
purple would be second place because it's a blend of
blue and red. Dick Fane with me, but they but
for whatever reason, they go blue, red is and and
Calvin Ridley, in my estimation, was like a purple, you know,

(02:10):
and and maybe red at best. Nobody else was blue
red purple, and uh you know now uh you know pff.
For example, they don't have a single receiver ranked in
the in the top ninety in the NFL, so they
got tet no targets running back. It's just semester. I
thought they were very poorly coached. I won't go into
the details, but he that coach has been whacked. So

(02:33):
I think we don't know what cam Ward is because
the Titans are so bad on offense.

Speaker 6 (02:39):
Well, we're trying to figure out what Sam Donald is.
We think we know, we think we like what Sam
Donald is. But I made the comment earlier that maybe
Sam Donald needs to be willing to eat it a
little more and take more sacks versus doing what he
did last week.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
Is that is that fair?

Speaker 6 (02:55):
As you know, like the Texter says, you're gonna Barbara
hue me with your analysis of that take.

Speaker 5 (03:03):
Well, I would say that a sack is certainly better
than in interception obviously, right, and you go back to
the rams, but let's just kind of take some things
into perspective. That the turnover worthy plays, which is a
really you know that that says, Okay, we're gonna throw
out the luck and the good luck and the bad luck,
and Darnold has ten turnover worthy plays. That's that's fifteenth

(03:26):
right right dead in the middle. But but the offset
to that, the big time throws, his seven point six
percent is number one in the NFL. So the ratio,
what's a big time throw? Mean, it's a subjective, just
like whoa kind of a wow throw.

Speaker 4 (03:44):
There's no way that's a real stack. If you say, whoa,
that's a big time.

Speaker 5 (03:49):
Right, well, look it's it's there's a certain metrics. I
think it has to be a certain I'm out down
the field, that has to be in a tight coverage.
What have you point is? Sam Donald is number one
in big time throws, he's in the middle and turn
of wheth he plays. So then you say the racio
like we've all heard touchdown to interception racio, which to me,

(04:10):
you know as always say hey, let's put the ratio
of something good to something bad. To me, it always
should have been yards per interception because you get interceptions
more trying to get more yards. So I don't understand
my whole life, why why yards per interception hasn't been
a thing, but turnover worthy plays the Raco of the

(04:32):
big time throw to turnover worthy plays both the number
and the ratio. Donald is in the top four in
the NFL even after that game against the Rams.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Well, they're going back off then, is what you're saying.
He should just continue to be as aggressive as he's being.

Speaker 5 (04:46):
Well, I think he's done a hell of a job
of you know, with only the ten sacks, I think
he's done a hell of a job of managing how
to work that pocket. And and to that point, there's
a stat in the NFL portal air yards per time
to throw on completions. Okay, So basically, are you getting

(05:08):
rid of the ball quick? Okay? But within that are
you generating yards? Well, we know he's that. Sam Donald
is number one in the NFL in yards per attempt,
He's number one in yards per completion. But how about
air yards per time to throw? Well, he's number one
in the NFL. And by the way, for the Geno

(05:30):
is fortieth out of forty four qualifying quarterbacks and Geno
was thirty fourth last year. So you've got a guy
that understands how to deal with the pressure and avoid sacks.
And in fact, in the in the same portal, Sam
Donald is listed as going to the first read on
his progression exactly sixty two percent of the time. The

(05:54):
only the only guy who is who's who's higher in
that regard was Davis Mills, who's basically a backup, and
so he's got a small data set. So first starting
quarterbacks Sam Darnald is number one at going to the
first read and now the thirty eight percent of the
time that he doesn't. I've done a lot of time
talking on this station about how I really marvel how

(06:17):
quickly he goes through his progressions. The problem was Sunday,
every one of those well, the fourth one not really,
but the first three interceptions there was a major issue
with the breakdown in the interior of the offensive line.
And how many times have we been talking about that?
Right and so so Donald, while he has been good

(06:38):
at navigating this issue about the pressure in the manner
that I've been describing, you know, he wasn't on Sunday,
but he's still left you know people, And I do
want to say two things because I've heard me say,
hey take the hit.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
WHOA.

Speaker 5 (06:54):
There is nothing that I have ever seen that on
the tape at any point in this man's career where
I would say this guy looks soft to take a
hit now. So there's a big difference between take the
sack and take the hit, because if you say, hey,
take the hit, that you know, there's almost an implication
like you're scared to get hit. And I think that

(07:15):
is woefully unfair to Sam Darnold. The tape that he
has put on his entire career, well.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
I'm looking at just pff, deep passing twenty yards or more?

Speaker 3 (07:25):
Is that air yards? By the way, Hugh, do you know? Yes?

Speaker 4 (07:27):
Okay, so deep passing twenty yards or more. They've got
him as the number one great quarterback in the NFL,
with the number two NFL passer rating tied for number
two thirty attempts or more on deep balls. He's got
the number one completion percentage and the number one yards
per attempt with zero drops by his receiving corps as well.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
So that's pretty damn good.

Speaker 4 (07:48):
I want to ask you this, as a former player yourself,
if you had Ernest Jones come out and defend you
the way he did Sam Donald, and tell everybody if
you think this guy's the problem and f you what
would that mean to you as a teammate.

Speaker 5 (08:04):
It made a hell of a lot. I think I'd be,
you know, kind of really touched by it and and
wanting to uh, you know, to to back up those words,
and and uh, yeah, I think it's cool as hell.
And uh, you know, he's the captain of the defense, or
at least he's the green dot. And and you know,
I think it's nice that he recognized everything that Sam

(08:27):
Donald's done. It was a bad game. Sam Donald lost
the ram game period. I am not trying to to
to run from that assertion. In fact, I asserted myself
that's part of playing the position. And and now we
just we see, Hey, he's going to get back on
the horse. Uh, the the Titans are not a real
big threat. You know, the horse isn't going to be

(08:47):
jumping over many you know, tall buildings or structures or
or wide rivers. So it should be easy to him.
But you know, I agreed. I don't know if you
guys caught in the telecast only. Gonzalez said last night
that he thinks that Sam Darnold has more pressure on
him than any player in the NFL to win, just

(09:11):
just from here to the end of the season. Just yeah,
obviously to win, but but in terms of how the
eyes are going to be on him, what he's gonna do,
and and you know he's specifically probably h you know,
that's an early sell for him and the Amazon crew
on the Thursday night game that's going to take place
on December eighteenth. But we we we discussed this topic
on Monday, like like, we're hopefully he gets back on.

(09:35):
They got to they got to improve some things. We'll
see what they do with cane Iroe. I mean, I
think that Eliza Royo for a second round draft picked,
only have fourteen catches. I think that's got to improve.
You know, you got to get some some cohesion going
with rashidsa he to make that worth it. So I
think there's a lot of things you can do over
the next three weeks. Then you play the Colts. That's

(09:56):
gonna be a tough game at home, and then and
then you know, all the marbles on that Thursday night You.

Speaker 6 (10:01):
Not a lot of coaches like to give flowers to
their team during the middle of the season, but Mike
McDonald said, quote, it's clear we are a great team.
After that La loss, I was a little surprised to
hear an NFL coach say that, Do you agree with him?

Speaker 3 (10:17):
Well, we got two issues.

Speaker 5 (10:19):
Number one is this statement of fact, and number two
should have he said it well to say a great team,
you can't really delve into the factual realm, can we,
because that's just a subjective term. I think that clearly,
if I had to make inferences, I think what he
was doing is saying, hey, my team needs a boost

(10:41):
they needed had we won this game, had Meyers got
you know, made great contact with that ball and kicked
it through the uprights, then I don't think he would
have said that. He would have said, Okay, now everybody's
going to be throwing you know that the we're gonna
be number one in power rankings. Everybody's going to say
that's tough. And then he probably would have brought the
rat down, or at least, you know, he wouldn't have

(11:02):
said that, But in that moment, he probably felt like
his team could use a boost of confidence and let
them know exactly how I feel about him. And and
you know, let's say, hey, yeah, we we're lost seven
and three, but think of where we are. You know,
you're the Seahawks, yeah, they've only they're two and three
against current playoff teams. That's a four hundred.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
You know, I have the.

Speaker 5 (11:22):
Fourteen teams, you know, I have a who has a
better rating than that. There's only three teams that are
better than four hundred last year. Last year, eight of
fourteen teams had a three thirty three or worst record
against playoff teams. Dave, You've been saying this for a
long time in both baseball and football. You know, good teams,
it's not like they always dominate the really good teams.

(11:45):
You know, you're lucky to go five hundreds. The Seahawks
are two and three. Had that, you know, ball gone through,
they'd be three and two. But but I think that
that what what what McDonald's seeing is a team that
absolutely has a chance to win the Super Bowl. And
for example, if you go over the last six seasons,

(12:06):
the Seawks right now at seven and three. To go
over the last six seasons, the Super Bowl winner was
seven and three or worse. On five of those six teams.
Only one team was better, an eight and two team
in there I think might have been the Eagles. But
so he knows they are right on track. And by
the way, to be right on track. On the offensive

(12:26):
side of the ball that needs cohesion. You know, offenses
are symphony. Defense is a beehive. On the offense side,
you got a new coordinator, a new quarterback, and to
really look at yourself and to say we have a
legit chance to win the Super Bowl. He sees it
and he wants to let his team know that that's
what he believes in them.

Speaker 4 (12:42):
Right, Okay, So how do you handle his abel this weekend.
Is it just as easy as hey, the doctor say
he can go, he goes? Or do you maybe want
to sit him and just give him the week off
because it's the Titans.

Speaker 5 (12:51):
I'd prefer to sit him, you know, just to get
him a hundred percent. But you know, for Christian Haynes,
just a thought on that. At Yukon and then the
first year of the Seahawks, he had two thousand, four
hundred and twenty three snaps at right guard prior to
that last drive on Sunday and only three snaps at

(13:13):
left guard. So those ten snaps that he had at
left guard were you know, the fourth through thirteenth snaps
of his you know, big time football life playing left guard.
But you know, we'll see how he goes. He got
he saw stunts two of the first three plays, handled
them well. He was also the communicator on the snap,

(13:34):
so that was an extra burden. He did get truck
verse on one of those early plays, but other than
that he played okay. So we'll see what he does.
If the Seahawks can't beat the Titans with Christian Haynes
at left guard, they got a lot bigger proms.

Speaker 6 (13:49):
What's been the drop off from Sundell to Olu? If
any Sundale's a better athlete, Oulu.

Speaker 5 (13:56):
Clearly a worse pass blocker. Uh, And you know that
was his his his getting trucked on the first interception
was the second pass. And I didn't like the scheme.
I don't like sending both the guards out and to
their respective help out on the outside and leaving the
center on an island. So I don't like that schematically,

(14:18):
But yeah, that caused Darnold to have to move and
retreat back to his diagonally back to his left, which
set in motion the whole calamity. And and and uh,
you know, I thought that Cooper Cup went too deep
on the route and a lot of bad things were happening,
but it started with Olu getting trucked.

Speaker 4 (14:36):
I don't know if you caught the Husky Hank show
Hugh before you go here, But Mario and Greg kind
of went at it a little bit about the Husky
passing game. In short, Greg thinks the Husky passing game
is good and Mario thinks they are not good. And uh,
you know, Greg would vote, would quote the completion percentage,
and Mario would talk about the lack of a deep threat.

Speaker 3 (14:55):
So where do you fall on that, Well.

Speaker 5 (14:58):
The completion per section. I think there's gonna be a
lot of talk, Well, Demand Demon's gonna likely get the
Husky record and and people are gonna equate completion percentage
with accuracy. To me, I think it speaks more to
the decision you make on where you throw the ball.
And I think it's interesting that that the stat portal

(15:18):
they scout these college quarterbacks and the NFL has the
off target percentage while Demand is an on in conference
play power for isn't that all we care about?

Speaker 2 (15:31):
Right?

Speaker 5 (15:32):
Because because if Demand gets to play against UC Davis
and uh you know, uh Manning has to go up
and play Ohio State in and out a conference game,
let's just restrict to in conference power for teams and quarterbacks.
There's eighty quarterbacks, so demand seventy two point three percent.
Completion in those games is six six, but his off

(15:53):
target percent he's forty second, with first being the best
and the most accurate, so not even in the top half.
On air yards of five or more yards, we're getting
rid of those shovel passes and the bubble screens and
what have you. Duman's completion percentage now that falls a
little bit more. He's thirteenth, still good, thirteenth out of eighty,
but his off target percentage he's sixty fifth, with again

(16:17):
first being the best, you know, eightieth being the worst.
He's sixty fifth out of eighty eight. How about the
intermediate game from air yards ten to twenty yards, demon
completion percentage twelfth out of eighty pretty damn good, off
target percentage sixty second out of eighty. So these and
then there's I could cite you similar numbers for EPA,

(16:40):
which is the expected point average. But the point is
is that that I don't think that completion percentage is
just about accuracy. I think it's about choice of where
the ball goes, and you know some of those others
if we're going to equate. Hey, we're a record at
a record setting accuracy rate. The numbers don't and the
and the tape doesn't show that. Hey, listen, great stuff.

(17:03):
I don't think you have barbarahwed us too bad. But
we'll see what happens next time, all right, I'm eager
to Yeah, well, just just throw up. You guys are Yeah,
you guys are good at throwing out stuff. I'll get you.
I'll get you eventually.

Speaker 4 (17:17):
That will be an opportunity at some point. All right,
have a good Thanksgiving. We're gonna talk today, all right, man,
we'll see you that. Yes, all right, here nailing with us.
