Speaker 1 (00:00):
Maybe the biggest star of all just sat down with us.
Look who's here with us at Husky Stadium. Hand off
those Coleman. Oh. He dances out of a couple of
Trojans off to the right side, head into the end zone. Touchdown.
Jonah Coleman put the jump cut of the air and
he races to the end zone from nineteen yards out,
hands it off Coleman space on the left side. Does
(00:21):
it again. Jonah Coleman marches in from fifteen yards touchdown. Washington. Oh,
I got more of that coming this year, baby, a
lot more of that coming this year because he's back.
He's not going anywhere, baby. This guy told the NFL
to take a height tak and wait at the pro level.
Here he is joining us live from Husky Stadium, Number one.
(00:42):
Jonah Coleman with us. How are you, man, I'm doing great.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
I'm doing great having.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
It is great to see you. Thanks so much for
doing this. So how about it? Does this kind of
feel like Tucson? This feel like Arizona? With us? Whether
we got here today, baby.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
I would say, is better. It's perfect. You can't beat
this nowhere.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
I got I gotta talk about your grill, right now,
that is an expensive looking set of tea. Are those
real diamonds in that mouth right now? Oh my goodness,
I love it. Unbelieve we're gonna tweet out a picture
of that.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
I love it. I almost were the same one, And
so I'm glad like Dick, because that would have made
us look weird if I was doing the same thing
that you were with the mouthguard. But tell us about this, man,
I mean, you're one for you obviously is in the
books I thought went pretty well. Obviously you want to
see more w is in the win column. But to
give us kind of a recap of how your number
one went for you one Montlake last year.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
It was exciting. I guess it was a good taste
of what it could be, you know, playing in Husky Stadium,
you know, that's that's been the best thing about this
whole thing. You know, the fans they bring, all the energy,
they bring, all a love, all the passion that you
know we bring when we play at home. So it
was a great experience to be able to go through
the season and have them right there behind us. You know,
(01:51):
like I said, it's it's hard to win, you know,
a football game in general, but you know, at home,
taking on tough teams, you know, to be able to
have that streak still alive, you know, it's the fans, guys,
the guys that support us. You know, you guys on
your feet most of the game, you know, yelling, screaming.
You know, no matter you know what the score is
or anything, you guys are tuned in. So appreciate you
(02:12):
guys for you know, coming to the game and supporting us.
You know, that's been probably the best thing about about everything.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Not to disparage any other place that you've played, including Arizona,
but is this different than what you experienced in two
side as far as that game day.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Atmosphere, definitely. You know, they don't call it the greatest setting,
you know for a reason. You know, uh, they got
the boats popping off on the water. You know, they
got the tailgate going on, and the dog walk. You know,
we need more you guys at the dog walk. But
you know it's only gonna get better. But just the
energy that you guys just bring is you know, it's unmatched,
you know so, and it's even you know, outside of football,
(02:47):
you know, walking around you know Seattle, you guys, you
know notice us. You know, you guys come up say
hi and stuff, and that's been amazing.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Take us through your off season and your decision to
come back for one more year. How seriously did you
contemplate leaving ahead into the NFL.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
It was definitely, you know, in the air, you know,
but obviously I want to get my college to college
degree and I just feel like I have some month
finished business here, you know. So obviously having some long
talks with you know, Coach Fish and my family and
you know, Coach Graham, and you know, that's what kind
of led to the decision. You know, we're not done yet.
(03:24):
You know, you want to initially like leave a place
better than you found it. You know it's not the
best that I can leave it, you know.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
So yeah, well you mentioned getting your degree. Let me
ask you a question. How many people in your family
have gotten a college degree?
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Zero?
Speaker 1 (03:38):
How many in your family went to college? So what
does that mean to you? To be the first to
go to college and be this close to being the
first to walk home with a degree.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
It means a lot. You know. Obviously I feel like
I was the chosen one, you know, being a middle
kid and ten siblings, with ten siblings, Wow. Nine siblings,
ten siblings, you know, right, Yeah, but just being in
a and you know, growing up and everyone pretty much
treated me like the baby, even though I was in
the middle. But you know, I was always one, you know,
involved in sports and you know, doing all that stuff,
(04:09):
trying to be positive and be somewhere and be something
in life, and uh, they just did nothing but support me. So, uh,
it's it's been great.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Jonah Coleman joining us A Jonah, we had Number two
sitting in that chair right there a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Yeah, and he.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Put on a bunch of weight in the off season
and you've trimmed down in the off season. Talk about
the decision of why and what you were able to
do to your body in the last six months.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Well, obviously it was just something that I needed to do.
I feel like, feel more comfortable at the way that
I'm at now. You know, I just two twenty three
to twenty four around there, you know, to twenty two
and I'm feeling light that day, but just staying around
that area, feel more fast, explosive. You know, everything has
(04:54):
went up in the weight room as far as power, velocity, speed, everything,
all that stuff has been going up. Since I cut down,
I feel more comfortable. I can do more things, you know,
get involved in the passing game a lot more and
not leave a lot of meat on the table, like
finishing runs and stuff like that. So excited to see
(05:15):
you guys, gonna see a lot of big players this season.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
I love it. Well, Jonah Coleman is well. I hear
from you dub for spring ball and you mentioned it
was kind of you know, fifty to fifty that you
really considered, you know, what the NFL had to offer,
as you should by the way, I mean, dismissing it
would have been ridiculous. But this is the second time
really that you've kind of third time really that you've
committed to Fish, I mean out of high school, right,
and then you follow him here to Seattle and then
you tell the NFL, no, I want to play one
(05:38):
more year for coach Fish. So what gives? What is
it about Jetfish that keeps bringing you back?
Speaker 2 (05:44):
It's just a family. This is just a family atmosphere
and the culture that he builds and brains. It just
makes you not want to leave. You know, you're comfortable,
you know, be able to be yourself. You don't get
that you know, just any and you know everywhere.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Give us an example that you mentioned being yourself. But
like a lot of guys have said that, you're not
the first one that has said that jet builds a
family atmosphere. Is there a story like does he call
you at two o'clock in the morning, is it have
you over for Christmas dinner? What does that mean when
you say.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
That, I mean I'll text him and he'll text me back.
You know, I'll call him, he'll answer. If he doesn't,
he returns. You know, his wife talks to me, his
kids talk to me. We're at his house, you know,
eating dinner, you know, like Easter is coming up. He's
the biggest thing he's focused on. And just make sure
everyone has a place to eat. And if you don't
have nowhere to eat, you can come to my place.
It's open arms. So his being a coach like that,
(06:33):
you know, it doesn't make players feel like more comfortable,
more like involved, like more like like they belong you
know in the program. You know, no coach I don't
really know any other coaches that are just open arms,
like to their home, where where they sleep at it
and where their family is, you know, to their players.
So the fact that he does that is just no
mind blowing.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
It was tough for coach.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
He had to piece together a bunch of blockers in
front of you last year kind of last minute. He
got the whole offseason to do it this year. So
talk about how different your blockers are this year than
what we saw last year.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
They've been, they've been, They've been able to have a
full year development, you know, and having some young guys
coming in that are really good, are going to be
really good, you know, and just be able to have
this the program is in a better place than it was.
You know a year ago. I didn't meet my center
or my guard or you know, my starting tackle until
freaking June.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
You know, so just think about that we met Landed.
So just be able to have those guys you know
back for a full year, a couple older guys in
the room, you know, and having Carver bringing his leadership
in his obviously his development and his experience that he'd
been through as a player. You know, this is gonna
(07:48):
this is gonna change a lot, you know. Obviously having
coach Swiss, I think uh is a good It is
a good job, good addition to us too, because he
played online in the NFL, you know, a couple of
years and you know, obviously he was my assistant running
back coach at Arizona and to see him, you know,
get the job and stuff. You know, he pretty much
taught us all protections him and Coach Graham like, he's
(08:10):
the reason why I like the running backs understand the
protection more and just be able to have that bond
in that relationship, you know with them. You know, we
all thinking the same. You know, we all got the
same goal to the same mission. We all they know
each other's job. So just having that camaraderie and you
know that chemistry is gonna help a lot. You know, Yeah,
I love it.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Well, Jonah Coleman with us for a few more minutes
here at Husky Stadium for Husky spring Ball. And there's
a game a year ago, I think it was the
Eastern Michigan game where you were just short of one
hundred yards right late in the fourth quarter. I got it, yeah, right,
but oh, here comes Jonah Coleman off the bench to
get his hundred yards right because Coach Fish gave you
a shot to get to that century mark. A lot
(08:49):
of coaches wouldn't do that. I mean, heck Don James
wouldn't do that back in the day. Right, forget it.
The game's over. So what does that mean to players
when he's like, Hey, we got to win the game,
but if I can take care of you, carry.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
You, Uh, they didn't. Thinking back to that moment, he
was just kind of like, don't to go in. You
get one carry. I think I was like a yard
or two away. He was like, go get the carry,
and you know you're coming out. But yeah, just to
be a thousand yard rusher, you know in a program
that's that's mean, that means a lot. You know, kind
of got my name stamped a little bit. But uh,
(09:21):
obviously the goal is to surpressed, surpass that, you know,
be better, you know. So I'm excited for what's next,
for what's coming.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
Well, I'm gonna be a little greedy as Osky fan.
We want a thousand out of you this year, and
then one thousand more out of number twenty four the
year after and then the year after that. So talk
about how you mentor Adam Muhammad and and what upside
that kid has in your.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Mind, Well, Adam is a great kid. Every time you're
seeing me smiling. You know, he's always in a good mood.
You know, no matter what he got going on at home,
he's always coming in. He's the same person every day.
You know, he works his tail off. You know, I
don't think I met a player that just doesn't get tired.
You know, he doesn't get tired. He has tremendous you know,
(10:05):
he's really smart. He's a fast learner. He's a visual learner.
You know, you tell him to do something, he's gonna
do exactly what you say. You know, he's able to
take coaching. He's able to you know, ask me questions,
how to do this, how to do that. You know,
he's pretty open with me, and you know, on and
off the field about you know, the issues that he
go through. I'm open to him about the issues I
(10:25):
go through. So it's just having that brotherhood. And you
know I posted him on his visit when he came
to Arizona, and you know, the first thing I did
was take him out to dinner, you know, because I
wanted to bring him in closer. You know, I was
gonna be the starter that year, and the older guy
in the room, Mike Wiley, DJ Williams left I'm just
doing what the guys did to me, you know, bringing
(10:47):
me in, you know, getting me better on and off
the field. Just you know, I'm older than him, so
obviously he got like a lot of questions asking me
and stuff like how I feel about certain things smart
decisions and things like that. And I even you know,
I ask him questions about certain things, how do how
do you feel about this? And it's just being able
to go to him. And he's a young guy and
(11:07):
the maturity that he has is just that's just makes
him great, you know. So yeah, but he's gonna be great. Man.
I'm excited for it. You know, he worked his but
off this off season, you know, and it's gonna show.
So everybody watch out.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
I love him. I love it. Well. Before you go,
this is kind of turning into Tucson North up here.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
Man.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
You got two new guys from Arizona and menew and
to Carrio Davis that have come up on the defensive
side of the ball. How fired up should Husky fans
be for those two guys on the defense?
Speaker 2 (11:35):
Oh? You guys want some playmakers on d some big plays,
you know.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
Uh, I love it.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna be excited here. You
know all the guys that came. Man, guys, it's gonna
be exciting, excited.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Well, go get him, man, congrats and everything you've done
so far. Go get that degree. Man, that's awesome, by
the way, congratulations on that, and kick ass this year.
And if you want to come back for a fifth
year in college football, I mean we can maybe try to,
you know, get a few bucks to get for you
make because apparently you can do whatever you want. There's
no rules.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
That's what I hear. That's what I heard. I think
my work might be done at this issue.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
I got it. We'll go go make it a special
one man, great stuff and we'll talk down the road. Jowna,
thank you, guys, appreciate this man. Jonah Coleman with us
on the radio show for a few minutes here from
Husky Stadium. Obviously just an unbelievable mainstay for this offense.
One of the best in the country. There's no question
about that. You start thinking about him as a senior.
Technically he could be a Doke Walker Award winner. He
could be one of the absolute best running backs the
(12:31):
country has to offer. And I do wonder though, honestly,
I was gonna ask him if he had to take
off that it's possible as numbers don't go where everybody
thinks they might go. But he still has a better
year because, let's face it, Demon Williams is gonna run yes, right,
and mom is gonna get more sure. When Will Rogers
was here, there wasn't really a lot of opportunity for
him to be a scrambler. I guess unless it's the
Apple Cup and you're running read zone on the short
(12:52):
side of the field. But outside of that, I mean,
Demon Williams is gonna take a large percentage of the
snaps and he's gonna make magic happened, either with his
arm or with his legs. So, you know, could we
see a guy that puts up maybe identical numbers a
year ago, you know, but doesn't have maybe a phenomenal
season stats wise, but is more efficient. Maybe he sees
(13:14):
his yards per carry go up a little bit. Maybe
as he said, I thought it was interesting Dick when
he said, I think it was off the air on there.
I forget now. But he wants to play a bigger
role in the pass game, right, I mean, that's where
his bread could be buttered, maybe even a bit more
than last season.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Well, it's taking a look at his total touches. He
had about two hundred and twenty touches. He had one
hundred and ninety three carries. He had many catches, twenty
three catches. I think that goes could be forty I mean,
I think that goes up to thirty five forties.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
You're probably right.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
The carries are probably going to be closer to one
to seventy five instead of one ninety three, because Demon's
gonna be He's gonna double his number.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
Of absolutely, no question about that.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
And Adam Mohammad only had forty two carries last year,
but that guy's getting seventy five plus carries this season.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
They got to come from somewhere. Yeah, I just don't
know if there's a fifteen hundred yard back there, for example,
out of him. That seems like a lot to bite
off when you have all these other playmakers. But just
be afishing. And let's let's look as let's also face it,
Washington wasn't really in the fourth quarter winning a lot
of football games by a big margin, and there wasn't
a chance to really rest anybody last season. A lot
(14:15):
I mean going the reverse, there was a couple of
games like that. But you know, if they got three
or four games where they're up by you know, fourteen
to seventeen points with ten minutes ago, who knows all
of that might be where Mohammad and Jordan Washington get a.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
Chance to play like, Oh, September should be like that
until you play a lot of.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Well, that's the reason why I think that Jedfish is
going to really pump up Demon's numbers in the first
three games of the year. And that's why I asked
him Jonah about what he did for him in the
Eastern Michigan game, because clearly this is a guy that
is aware of numbers while he's coaching the game. I mean,
there's a lot of coaches that would have no freaking
idea that Jonah Coleman needed one more care would they
(14:51):
care for one hundred yards? Nor would they give a damn.
I mean Don James would not give a damn. Chris
Peterson would not give a damn, not care, no question.
And look, I mean those guys were winners. I mean
they one big time in college football. But this is
a guy who's shown and proven that he's aware of
all of that stuff, and you don't think he's gonna
maybe try to get DeMont Williams off to a heisman
start against Colorado State, and you see Davis and the
(15:14):
Apple Cup and Tar Pacoob's hopefully in Pullman after what
they did here are at lumed a year ago. Hell,
yes he will. We're gonna break. Adam Silver has spoken
regarding Seattle an expansion. You're gonna want to hear this
next on ninety three to three KJRFM
