Speaker 1 (00:01):
Your Home for the Huskies probably presents the Coors Light
Husky Honks on Tuesdays, powered by Emerald Queen Casino Setter medals,
Zeek's Pizza by UA Local thirty two, Eider Construction by
Zoom Care are in our foundation specialists, your Northwest Chevy
Dealers and by Darwin Natural Pet Food. Now the Husky Honks,
(00:24):
Greg Lewis, Mario Bailey and your host Dave Zuffi Muller.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Oh boy, here we go. We are back yet again.
The Husky Hanks Show is on the air. I knew
these two guys could not stay away. Is there an
extra mic on in here? By the way, something sounds
weird now whatever you did, just fix it. Just stay
with that, because that sounds much better. Craig Lewis, Mario Bailey.
The Husky Hanks are on the air, brought to you
in part by our friends at Zeke's Pizza, homegrown in
(00:52):
the PNW, order online at Zekespizza dot com. Guys, this
is not, I think, the show that we thought we'd
be having after the Michigan game. We thought nine months
later we'd be sitting here talking about Kaitlin de boor
coming back a bunch of players returning for you, dub
and that is not at all what happened over the offseason.
(01:13):
Forty four new players, an entirely new coaching staff, brand
new head coach, and Jed Fish. We got brand new
black helmets and jerseys being advertised now on social media that,
by the way, look pretty damn cool. I'll just throw
that out there right now. But it's good to see
some smiling faces. How are you And have you missed
me as much as I've missed you?
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Well, of course I miss Mario. There's been a long
time since I've seen one of my good friends. Oh
it's afty. Miss you a little bit too.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
I'm going to vote though, that we don't spend one
second because I'm bitter one second talking about Kaylin de Boro,
former coaching staff or any of that. My vote is
that we don't give them any presents on the air.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Well, you just did, by the way, I'm just saying forward.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
I just vote that we don't any time on them.
Move forward. Yes, I'm bitter. So there's there's three people here.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
So he actually brings up a good point, Mario, because
I have never seen a Husky Nation as divided as
they are regarding how we are supposed to remember last
year and how we're supposed to remember the head coach
that took off for Alabama. The last time I saw
a coach on campus that kind of divided Husky Nation
like this with Steve Sarksian, right, I mean, I've got
(02:25):
generally good things to say about him bringing us out
of the depths of hell. And then Chris Peterson took
you to the next step. Others, No, seven wins start
forget it. He was an embarrassment. Blah blah blah. So
where would you vote in this thing? If I'm voting
yes and Greg's voting no, what's your vote?
Speaker 5 (02:41):
I'm on the opposite side of Greg.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
You know, I love coach de bor Right.
Speaker 5 (02:45):
I feel like my two years on the radio, we're
twenty five and three in the last two years. That's
the price of winning. Like I'd be honest, if I
was coach, I would have left too, you know. So
I don't really have any bad things to say about him.
The program was great these last two years. We want
to pack twelve championship. We got to go to a
national championship. What can you say? That's what happens. When
(03:06):
you win, they're gonna come looking for your coach. They
came looking for ours, and he got out.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Well, one thing Mario is always gonna disagree with. That
just happens. That's just the nature of this show. It's
Greg versus Mario.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
I usually win. That's usually show. We just changed it
versus Mario.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
But I think my point that I want to make
is it that I don't appreciate the last two years
and what happened and what coach the board did, nor
do I villainize him.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
I'm literally really hurt.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
I mean it's kind of like you love something, you
care about it, and when something bad happens to it,
regardless of the circumstances, you're a little hurt.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
And let's be honest.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Even over the offseason, we've heard a lot about this
and the way college football has changed. You know, you
mentioned earlier, Sophie, we were talking that Nick Saban was
agreeing with the transfer portal now when he didn't agree
with it. So there's just been so much of that
stuff going on that I guess in my mind it's
hurtful to go back and now I just want to
start talking about how do we build the future and
(04:06):
how do we go forward with Husky.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Well, I think it's appropriate for us because, let's face it,
we are the mothership of Husky football. We are all right,
we are the epicenter of this sport. And I'm with you, Greg.
I think you put it well that it was heartbreaking
to see him walk out of here. I was bummed
out beyond belief when Caylen Debor took off. I will
say this, I do think, and we'll have to wait
(04:28):
until we see what happens starting Saturday.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
Obviously, that jetfish.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Mario has done as good a job as you can
do getting this thing back together again.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
You got a top twenty recruiting class right now.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
You got forty four new guys on the roster, including
thirty three red shirt and true freshman on this football team.
If you had if Will Rogers played here a year ago,
if Jonah Coleman played here a year ago, if Ephesians
Price Sock played here a year ago, if Jeremiah Hunter
played here a year ago, I think people would feel
a lot different about Husky football. Washington's got a bunch
(05:01):
of returning starters, Mario. They're just returning from somebody else's
football team.
Speaker 5 (05:05):
Yeah, that's just what sports are gonna be like Cottae.
Sports is gonna be like that from here on out.
You're gonna see different guys and different starters, the starters
that were starting at other teams the previous year that
are going to be here at the University of Washington.
I just kind of look at it as how, when
I came here two years ago, you guys were talking
about coach Kaitlin to board just starting and what would
the Husky's gonna be.
Speaker 4 (05:24):
So I'm looking at coach Fish like that.
Speaker 5 (05:25):
I'm optimistic that he'll come in here and maybe give
us a nine and three record, nine and four something
like that.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
We should go back and play that show, by the way,
because I think I think if I would have told
you on that day, they'll go twenty five and three,
they'll beat Oregon three times, they'll win the Pac twelve Championship,
they'll win their first New Year six Bowl games since
the two thousand Rolls bawl and played for the national Championship.
But then the guy's gonna take off in Bolt. You
would have said, where do I sign? You would most
likely I'm not saying that I wouldn't. But the thing
I will say now is this, when you raise expectations
(05:54):
for a fan base, oh yeah, then they start to
assume that this is the level that we're going to
be at. And as much as I believe in coach Fish,
I think he's a great coach and I'm hopeful this.
I can't say anymore that we'll have him for five
seven years. Who knows, we may have him for one
or two years. Who knows the way things are now.
(06:15):
So I'm hopeful.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
But the thing about football and Mario, you know this,
it's more than just having good players that are coming
from places, is how do you bring them together? How
do you get them on the same page, and how
do you build that camaraderie.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
And those values within the program.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
And it's hard when you got forty four new guys.
Even when de Boor came in, Yeah, there was a
little bit of turnover, but not like this. I'm not
comparing these two. So I don't want nobody to get
up in arms right now. But if you think about
an example of this recently, what happened to Colorado and
last year because they had to bring so many people
together in a short period of time, they ended up
(06:53):
winning four football games, and the one place that we
right now is we get into it. We'll talk about
it more. But the concern in football as always what
are you gonna look like upfront? And that's where we
sat for our biggest losses.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Well, first of all, here's the thing, Mario, I find
it funny that Greg began the radio show literally saying
he does not want to talk about debor, and then
talked about debor, like just talking about ring. It's hard
to do. You're you're exactly right. And first of all,
let me let me just mention a couple of things.
I want to welcome in some sponsors, our friends at
Darwin's Natural Pet Products. Mario, you're a dog lover. I'm
(07:27):
a dog lover. I got a picky one that will
not eat anything. He loves this stuff, man, So check
out Darwin's Pet dot com slash kjr for a great
offer to get you going on some natural pet food
that your dogs will love. We got a picky eater
and he loves this stuff. So that's number one. Check
that out. And then number two, Delta's Back is a
big sponsor for us. We're gonna be flying all over
(07:48):
the freakin country this year. Man, we're going to Pittsburgh
for the Penn State game and then driving to Happy
Valley on Friday morning for the show.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
That night, I'm driving.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
Man, take a train, you can drive at night. That
was the funniest thing that happened in the twenty twenty
three season.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
We're driving back from Corvallis, Jackson.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
We go down there that morning and then we drive
back that night and we're dog thricking tired.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
It's pissing rain. Greg and I are falling asleep at
the wheel. Marios in the back seat. Man, pull over
so I can get the trains.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Man, I'm gonna done, Mann, and you did not die.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
But we're gonna fly. We're not driving to Penn State.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
So they're giving us round trip airfare for two to
on our flight to Pittsburgh. In our we fly, you buy,
We give you the airfare, you buy everything else, all right.
So here's what you gotta do, texting your first and
last name in the word delta easy to four, nine, four,
five to one. We'll promote it all week long and
announce a winner on next week's show for that round
(08:51):
trip airfare for two to Pittsburgh. Courtesy of our friends
at Delta dot Com. But I remember watching the Georgia
Alabama game like three years ago, Mario going on the
air and saying, Man, if you wants to be in
that game, they've got to start fixing things upfront. And
they fixed things up front. They had the best offensive
line in college football. They had Zion, they had Brailin
(09:12):
Trice who was a monster towards the end of the year.
And now they're going totally back to the drawing board
and starting all over again. How concerned are you about
five brand new starters on.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
The offensive line.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
Well, I'm gonna keep saying what I said, Like, I'm
gonna go back to two years ago, and we thought,
because we had the same offensive coach and a lot
of the same offensive linemen, that our offensive line was
going to struggle. But the past two years, you can't
say that they weren't the best position on our team.
They were the best position on our team for two
straight years and we had the same exact line and
the same coach. So I'm hopeful, even though I know
(09:46):
we have no returning starters, that we can do something.
I'm looking forward to see what our identity is on
offense and defense. We don't have an identity, so I
want to see I see Jonas, So I think we
can run the ball, but we'll see what our offensive
line can do.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
I'm optimistic. I'm not so optimistic or bullish as you.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
I think one, we did have continuity before, Like you
talked about a lot of the same guys who are
all projected two years before that to be all great,
had a good offensive line.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
Coach Brendan Carroll, certainly he's got his work cut out
for him. That's right.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
You have two guys who've transferred in from a lower
division of football. You have a guy who's expected to
start at center who's now the backup who's coming off injury.
Then you have a guy who transferred in from Ohio
State who has been there for three years and played
like three snaps. They started one game, one game, And
so the pieces that you're bringing in aren't tested at
(10:40):
this level. And it's hard to simulate that without being
on the field playing in these big time football games.
And let's face it, we're going into the Big ten.
And as much as you I'm always been a big
fan of the Pac twelve, knowing that it was a
great conference for football, but it wasn't a power conference
where you just lined it up, hit people in the mouth,
and ran the ball down the field. Right, So we're
(11:01):
going into a conference where that's what they do.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
Well, you saw what happened in Houston.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
Yeah, So the offensive and defensive lines is where it's
got to start. We talk about that in football a lot,
but this, I think is really where you're going to
get tested. That offensive line not having any guys on
it that have played Division one, Power five football at
any point in time in their career.
Speaker 4 (11:23):
System. Yeah, he's going to be tough for you. That's
what the difference is.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
You gotta you gotta, you gotta retch your freshman in
Fa Solo obviously, Sojane fa Solo, who's six eight, two
ninety five, He's getting backed up by a guy that's
been to junior college twice. I've got a great name,
Maximus McCree. Imagine walking around high school with that name.
By the way, guard Memolar is coming off the injury.
Pockey Feenal is a true freshman. Titiali is the transfer
(11:49):
from Portland State. Enoch comes from Ohio State or He
started one game and then as a party from San
Diego State. So hey, look there's guys that have played,
but Greg's right, they haven't played at this level. How
much different would we feel if they had five guys
starting for them that were all at least in the
program a year ago, and we're recruited to play here
by Kaitlynderborg.
Speaker 5 (12:10):
Of course you'd be a lot more confident. What I
will say is our schedule is great. We start with
three games with the Weavers, State, Central, Eastern and Wazoo.
Like what I'm just saying, those three games before you
start the Big ten schedule give you some type of
continuity and you get togetherness and you get to play
with each other those three games.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
I think that's great for us. Yeah, I believe that.
You know, having those three warm up build up games
is definitely gonna be an opportunity to see what you have.
Speaker 4 (12:41):
My problem is is what if you see that you
don't have what you need?
Speaker 3 (12:45):
And that's where Yeah, that's and and and we can
flip this to I know we're talking about office life,
but let's flip this to the other side of the
ball too. I think the defensive line is another place
where you have to say we don't have guys that
have been there in the trenches doing those fights against
the big monsters from a Michigan, Ohio State and Iowa
(13:05):
teams that you're gonna We're not gonna play in Ohio
State this year. But those defenses are the real I mean,
their offensive lines are the real deal. And it's going
to be, you know, an interesting watch to see how
our defensive line. One thing we've always had is at
least one guy that can cast some havoc in the backfield.
Last year to Tuli Gatsaoah was that guy. He caused
(13:25):
some havoc when he was healthy. Our defensive line looked
appreciably better than when he was out. Who's that guy
going to be this year? Is it Bandies? I don't know.
He's been here for six years. This will be a
six year right now. Yeah, and he hasn't made that
move yet. Valdez the transfer, So.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
It's a transfer from Montana State exactly. That's what I'm
saying about. So what what is that defensive line? Those
are the two areas where I love our running backs.
You know, we can't get through the show without me
talking about the running back. I love them, But what
kind of holes are going to have the run. Well,
that's the thing is that guys. I mean, I've I've
said this a ton that players always look better when.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
They play for you, right, because you're just looking at
the polo this could work, or at this guy.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
I mean, Sebastian Valdez was never a guy that you
would ever consider to be a starting defensive lineman at
Washington when he played for Montana State. You know, D'Angelo Titiali,
despite the fact that he went I think he went
to the East Sine Catholic right locally, he's a Portland
State gun. You would never look at them and say,
let's have them start for a Power five, potential champion
(14:29):
conference football team. But here they are. So can you
just survive? Can you survive?
Speaker 6 (14:35):
You know?
Speaker 2 (14:35):
I mean, do you, Mario, do you call the offense
differently while the offensive line is gelling in the first
three games of the year.
Speaker 4 (14:41):
You don't want to get your quarterback killed?
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Obviously, And Will Rogers, who last year played behind an
SEC offensive line and now he's playing behind this again.
Speaker 5 (14:49):
It's these first three games mean a lot. It could
build confidence, it could build continuity, it could build a lot.
It could build character, it could build our identity. We
don't know what we're going to do. Well know if
we're running the all we're passing the ball, what we're
doing if we're blitzing. So I just think these first
three games are perfect for us.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
But as he said, it's Greg just said it can
also be a disaster.
Speaker 4 (15:10):
And I said.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
After the first three games, so you know, I we
just by nature positive people.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
I guess I don't know. I can go back to Montana.
We're Husky Hawks, so we're always gonna be positive something degree.
When I'm gonna be dig Bear, they necessarily we could
be somewhat positive. So I think that gets, you know,
a little predous to taking shots to love. No, I
love Dick Bear. I'm just saying I'm not gonna, you know,
close my eyes and pretend like there aren't some questions
(15:38):
to be answered. I think the biggest problem for me,
and this is not necessarily a problem, but I think
the biggest challenge is is that last year we went
fourteen and one and what's hit the national championship. So
people not that they're expecting that, but they've been on
this high for so long. It's going to feel like
a big drop. If we go seven and five, you
(15:59):
know what is eight and four?
Speaker 2 (16:01):
It might be for it feels like a major winner
saying it would feel like it, but because I'm just
saying what what's happened in the last two years, just
going through it, it's gonna feel a little more painful,
at least in my opinion because the expectations and the
level play we've seen lately.
Speaker 5 (16:15):
I looked at the Arizona roster last year, and I
think you can have the same argument that we are
arguing about now about the quality of player that they
had last year and they still had a great season.
I told you guys last year, I was more scared
to see them in the Pac twelve Championship than I
was with Oregon. So if coach Fish could do that
with that Arizona roster last year, was to say he
can't do it with this.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Watch well, and just to your point, Greg Mario, I
don't know what you feel, but you say expectations are
high because you won fourteen game. I think expectations are
in the toilet right now. I'm just saying what you
used to on Saturday, how you after is going to
be different. You might you might say that, hey, people
may check out a little bit, you know, because of
where you are. But I mean Vegas has it at
(16:56):
seven and a half, guys, I mean Vegas just put
the total at seven and a half. I think Husky
fans have dramatically lowered their expectations for this year.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
Yeah, but I'm just saying, you remember how you know,
you remember how exciting it was last year, how we
felt going into every game. We were pumped up, we
were excited, we were having fun. I'm just saying that
it's not gonna feel as fun this year if we
dropped down to a seven and function remember how it
felt the last years just felt great. Well three years
ago maybe, well two years ago when I started, I
(17:26):
got called out for yelling in the press pots. Yea,
so you're not expecting it, that's what we can see again.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
Well, Mario's right, they got a soft landing with the schedule,
and if they can find a way to get off
to a three and oh start and then beat Northwestern
here and then that swing game in New Jersey, all
of a sudden, you're five and oh, you're ranked and
Michigan Wolverines are coming to town. They're all discombobulated from
the Connor Stallions. Jim harboss stuff, they got a brand
new head coach. They're flying two thousand miles to the
(17:55):
West coast and then bang beatdbbing.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
Everything's on the table. Boys, these guys already started. He
already did pump out. Do we like? What do we
not like about this team?
Speaker 2 (18:07):
And again we'll tell you how you can win round
trip airfare for two to Pittsburgh to join us for
the Penn State game, courtesy at Delta.
Speaker 4 (18:13):
Next on ninety three three kJ RFM.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
Now back to the Coors Life Husky Hanks on Tuesdays.
Greg Lewis, Mario Bailey and Dave Safti Muller on your
home for the Husky Sports Radio ninety three point three
kjr FM.
Speaker 6 (18:29):
Second down, hand off, Cam Davis again lowers the shoulder.
Speaker 7 (18:32):
Oh you think about his stretching across two arms up,
touchdown Cam Davis. He got hit at the two yard line,
went loaf, kept the lakes charted and Cam Davis punches
it in for his eleventh touchdown run of the season
and the Dogs ever reclaimed the land at Autsin Stadium.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
All right back here on the Husky Hawks debut show
for twenty twenty four, brought to him part by our
friends at Zeekes Pizza home growing in the Northwest, Order
online and Zeke's Pizza. They're giving us a fifty dollars
Zeekes Pizza gift card to give away every Tuesday show
and every postgame show. I would like to give it
to me because I am starving right now. I'll take
(19:10):
a wood butcher baby now four nine four five one,
texting your first and last name and your favorite pizza
pie from ziks.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
How about that?
Speaker 2 (19:17):
In Jackson will pull one and give somebody fifty bucks
a Zekes. We also have our Delta we fly, you
buy contest. We'll pay for the airfare and you pay.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
For everything else. All right, We're kind of cheaperround here.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
We'll take care of the airfair courtesy of Delta to
Pittsburgh for the Penn State Game. You'll leave on a Friday,
come back on a Sunday. You get your tickets, you
get your car, you get your hotel. You take care
of that. We'll take care of the airfair. Texting your
first and last name and the word Delta to four
nine four five one right now. We'll draw a winner
on next week's show, remember that Jackson. Next week's Husky
(19:49):
Hanks show, We'll draw a winner for a pair of
round trip tickets to go see the Dogs in Penn State.
We'll get you to Pittsburgh and you take care of
the rest. We fly you buy con with our friends
at Delta dot com. All right, So Husky's Weaber State
Boys on Saturday. That's an FCS team. The Huskies are
given twenty seven points against Weber. Four o'clock pregame, eight
(20:12):
o'clock kickoff, and let's talk about some of these guys
we're going to see. You heard the Cam Davis call.
There sat out the entire year with the knee injury.
I remember that day the news came down that Cam
was banged up. Our hearts just sank. And if he
could have been a part of this man, I mean,
would they have beaten Michigan? Probably not. Defense couldn't stop
the damn run that day. Yeah, but we could run
(20:33):
the ball and we had a limited off. Yllan was hurt, obviously, yes,
but getting him back right, getting him back and he's
now on his fourth head coach. He came here under Peterson,
he's leaving under Jedfish this running back room might be
the best.
Speaker 4 (20:49):
Part of this football team.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
You know, I've had probably the opportunity to talk to
come to him more than anybody else on this football team.
Cam Davis, I'm sorry, right, more than anybody else. And
an optimistic kid, more optimistic guy. Don't think I've ever
seen through all of these injuries, coaching changes, all of that,
he still feels supremely confident in his ability and he's
(21:10):
truly excited about being a Husky And that's what I
really love about him. I think this will be one
of the better running back rooms in the conference. I
know they're you know, you'll say Michigan and Wisconsin and
all those things, they have great running back tradition in history.
But I think just that, you know how we've seen
that thunder and lightning kind of deal and other teams
be really successful. Jonah Coleman is that five nine, two
(21:33):
hundred and almost thirty pounds low center of gravity, will
run extremely hard, spind keep his balance, get the tough yards.
Cam Davis is more of a cutback runner, kind of
like I was. You know, you get coming downhill, get
the offensive line blocking, and cut back and find those
lanes and then he has some speed to potentially take
it to the house. Then there's some other guys you know,
(21:55):
uh Nada and uh Adam, Mohammad, yeah, Mohammed sam Adam.
I do love that young kid out of Muhammad too.
He's kind of the perfect mixture of both. He's got
good hands, although I've seen him drop a couple of passes.
I know in college, I mean in high school. I
watched this film.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
He had good hands.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
So I think they have a complete running back room
with some really good players who are hungry. I think
Jonah Coleman is extremely holy and Davis is extremely hungry.
So I think our running back room this will be
more balanced team than last year, at least I think
based on all the first round, second round, third round
receivers we had, and now we got some running backs
that I think bring depth to that room.
Speaker 7 (22:27):
Well.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Jonah Coleman had over eleven hundred yards of total offense
for Arizona a year ago. He ran for age seventy.
He caught twenty five passes for two to eighty three.
Cam Davis two years ago had thirteen touchdowns okay, on
one hundred and seven rushing attempts, also caught twenty balls
for U dub So to me, Mario, the skilled players,
they're not what you had a year ago. Because you
(22:49):
just put three guys at wide receiver in the NFL,
for crying out loud, you may never have that kind
of talent again at wide receiver in the top three.
Speaker 4 (22:56):
Rounds, no question.
Speaker 7 (22:57):
No.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
But the skill players are they're okay, right. They may
not be elite, but I think they're above average. Jeremiah
Hunter caught sixty three balls a year ago for California,
seven touchdowns. Denzel Boston, I think it's gonna be a
really fine player. Giles Jackson's back again. I'm fine with
the skill players. The offensive line scares the hell out
of me. Do they have enough guys up front to
(23:19):
blow holes open for those dudes? So what do you
see from these wide receivers? Denzel Boston's been getting his
name mentioned for two years now, and now it's his turn.
Speaker 5 (23:27):
Well, it's like I guess it was LSU with Jamar
Chase and Justin Jefferson is the best. And I think,
and I think they had Moss. Our receivers are comparable
to what LSU had. We're losing those three guys and
to have replacements. It's gonna be hard, and I don't
know what our offensive identity is, like I said before,
(23:50):
so I don't know if we're going to pass it.
I love Jonah Coleman, so I hope that we run
the ball. But Denzel Boston does look great. The few
times I've been to practice, he looks great. And Giles
Jack And was my favorite a couple of years ago,
return wise or getting the ball in the slide. I
love him, and I love Jeremiah Hunter. He's had sixty
catches the past two years, so we have somebody that
(24:10):
has some experience. I just don't know the identity, so
I can't tell if we're going to get the ball
to the receivers in the right places or not.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
Well, I think your identity suck to some degree, has
to start with your quarterback. And if you think about
real watch Will Rogers. He had a lot of success
in that old Washington State. Are rates that air raid
which is predicated on getting rid of the ball, a
lot of crossing routes, and so I think our wide
receiver corps is probably better suited to that type of
(24:37):
game than the down the field air assault that we've
been running. The last couple of years, and I think
you're going to have to get rid of the ball
faster because of the offensive line. So I think that
if I'm Jeedfish, I'm looking at an offense that's more
predicated on getting the ball out quickly, throwing those shorter
routes and intermediate routes, a lot of crossing routes, things
(24:57):
like that. Now, the problem with that is is when
I think about Desmond Williams, the backup quarterback, that might
be a little different Demond Williams.
Speaker 4 (25:06):
That might be a.
Speaker 3 (25:06):
Little different than his skill set, which is more of
that you know, read zone, that RPO type of offense.
So I think it's gonna be kind of a combination
between that get the wall out quick, you know, intermediate routes,
and there's some RPO stuff built in.
Speaker 4 (25:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
Well, so how much do you go back, Mario, if
you're Jetfish to what worked for Will Rogers at Mississippi
State in twenty twenty two and say, let's incorporate some
of that.
Speaker 5 (25:29):
You have to that coach leach offense and the guy
throwing for like forty five hundred yards and thirty eight
hundred yards in those two seasons, you have to go
with what he's comfortable with, just to try and see you.
Speaker 4 (25:40):
Those stats, by the way, because that's pretty much right on.
Mario has a computer sophisticately.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
I looked at I looked him up as soon as
we got him to make sure see when he was
about to leave.
Speaker 4 (25:52):
I was like, well, is he any good?
Speaker 5 (25:54):
But I've seen him play with Coach Leach, and I
think you're gonna have to give some of the plays
that he's comfortable with.
Speaker 4 (25:58):
Yeah, well, he's yarded forty three games.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
He's the second all time leading passer in the history
of the SEC yardage wise, which I know, you know,
yards is all context of the era. Whatever, seventy one
touchdowns over two years and seventeen picks for Mike Leach,
and then Mike Leach passed away and they gave the
job to Zack Barnett. Zach Barnett changed the entire offense.
Zach Arnett got fired, Will Rogers transferred. If Mike Leach
(26:24):
hadn't passed away or Zach Arnett had stuck with the offense,
Will Rogers either maybe in the NFL or still maybe
in Stillwater.
Speaker 3 (26:31):
Yeah, and I think you know he's shown that he
has the ability to run that offense extremely well. And
as a team that doesn't have an identity yet, you know,
we'd just kind of bring it together. I think your
quarterback has to lead the way in what you're doing offensively.
You have to find something that suited to him. But
because I've also seen if you look at the Fafita
(26:53):
at Arizona demand Williams and even the kids we're recruiting,
he likes the smaller, more athletic quarters. He likes the
rpo game. So I think it's gonna have to be
sort of a combination because Will Rodgers is only gonna
be here one year, right, and then you're gonna have
to evolve into that next thing. So I think it's
gonna be some sort of a combination of that. The
offensive line in a offense where you're releasing the ball
(27:16):
really quickly doesn't have to be as necessarily stout, So
I think that does bowl will for what we have now.
So I don't think the offense we have this year
will necessarily mean that's going to be what it's gonna
look like in the future.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
And guys, I mean, let's not be naive. The offense
you have this year could look totally different because there
might be a new head coach next year.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
No stop, Well, I mean he can't run that fast.
He's gonna have to really put it like this. I'll
take it.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
If that means he was so good this year that
someone says we gotta have that guy, that must mean
we're gonna go ten eleven and two or something like that.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
It would have to be that we need to come
back and talk about where this thing's going right and
what we've been through with the Bar and what we're
about to go through with Jedfish. I've kind of totally
changed my mindset about how I approach this stuff. I'll
just tell you guys right now, the day and age
of a Don James for eighteen years done.
Speaker 4 (28:09):
Yeah over, I agree? All right? Mario and Greg.

Speaker 4 (29:25):
In our We Fly you buy.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
Contest right here on ninety three three KJRFM. So Jetfish
has made nine stops in the last thirteen years. Okay,
So either a we stick our heads in the sand
and just say no, no, no, things will be different
this time around, And maybe they will be. Maybe he
falls in love with Seattle, does good here, wants to
(29:49):
stay whatever. Maybe he's just average enough to stick around
here but not be attractive to somebody else.
Speaker 4 (29:54):
I have no idea.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
A lot of folks think Billy Napier's in big time
trouble at Florida, and they start the year with my Miami.
By the way, in week one, he's a Florida guy.
He wears the visor as an homage to Steve Spurrier,
for God's sake. So you know, for all the criticism
of the board, Jetfish could coach here for a year,
win eight or nine games, take off, and bring a
bunch of guys with him that he'd just brought into
(30:17):
play for him here in Seattle. So how are we
now approaching head coaching in college football versus the way
we looked at it maybe just ten years ago.
Speaker 5 (30:26):
Mario Well, I hope he has an extreme high buyout.
If we knew this information going into it.
Speaker 4 (30:32):
Everybody knew his information.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
It's on the internet, the same spot you looked up
Will Rogers' stats.
Speaker 5 (30:39):
I just hope that I haven't looked at Coach Fish's buyout.
Speaker 2 (30:42):
It's twelve million for year one, by the way, and
then drops to ten for year two.
Speaker 5 (30:46):
Okay, well, then I could take it if he leaves
it first year and twelve million dollars. But I honestly
think Coach Fish has a couple of years in him here.
I think he came to Washington, He's been with the
Seattle Seahawks before, and I think this journey is going
to stay here in Washington for a couple of years.
Speaker 3 (31:02):
I don't know what he's going to do. Nothing surprises
me anymore. I'm not, you know, willing to bet anything
on any of that. I just hope that, you know,
college football, some way, somehow, in the next three to
five years, figures out how to keep somethings constant, keep
some things the same. We've had history and tradition that
(31:22):
has really been what elevated college football. You know, you
there's something about college football that's different than the NFL,
and I think that's why we love it so much,
guys like us who are big fans, and some of
it has to do it, you know, that history, that tradition,
that knowing what you're going to have and who you're
going to see.
Speaker 4 (31:41):
So this is a new world. It's different.
Speaker 3 (31:44):
So I'm hoping that there is something though, And it's
just like anything, anytime money gets involved and becomes the
major part of it, things tend to change like that.
Right now, Don James probably made two hundred and fifty
thousand dollars a year and for someone to offer him
another one hundred thousand, I'll stay at Washington. But if
you're making eight million someone offers you thirteen million, there's
(32:04):
a lot of reasons to consider leaving and changing. So
I think that's part of it. We'll have to get
used to it somewhat. But I'm hopeful that this coach
has in his mind that I want to win here.
When I look at his situation at Arizona, from what
I read, he would have stayed there had they made
him a contract, offered. The offer that they were proposing,
(32:26):
had set on the regent's desk for months, never addressed.
No one ever took the time to say we're going
to do it, because I don't think they were willing
to make that investment in football. Hopefully, Washington say we're
going to make that investment so he'll stay.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
Well, here's the thing for me, I'm not mad at Debor.
I'm bummed out, as you said. I've moved past that.
But if Jedfish does the same thing and we benefit
from that and win games, okay, then great guarantee. If
Pat Chuen's got a list, right, every Adam's been a.
Speaker 4 (32:53):
Kid one now, no question.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
So if Washington benefits from Jedfish being hot enough to
be courted by somebody else around college football or the NFL.
Speaker 4 (33:04):
And that's good things for me.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
I'm just at a point in time, guys, with my
mindset where I'm thinking you dub is going to be
going through coaches like you and I go through underwear.
Speaker 4 (33:12):
For crying out loud.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
I mean you have had now four different coaches in
six years going back to Chris Peterson, and they've won
ten games or more in three of those six years.
Yet they've had all this turnovers. So this is just
the new day and age in college football, and a
guarantee in our lifetime we're gonna see a college football
coach unless it gets under control, Like you said, making
twenty million dollars a year for somebody's around the Churry
(33:34):
Smart's making thirteen million bucks right now. Guys at Georgia,
So well, what does success look like in year one
for Jetfish? What does a successful year one look like
for this coaching staff?
Speaker 4 (33:45):
I've already told you. I think it's just being competitive.
Speaker 5 (33:48):
I can see this team going four and oh or
three and oh to start off, and then it's how
we do in the Big Ten. If we can go
five hundred and the Big Ten and we can sneak
out of here eight and four, nine and three something
like that, ye successful. But what I seen from the
Arizona team last year, I think this Washington team can
go eight and four, nine and three.
Speaker 4 (34:06):
The over unders got to be six.
Speaker 3 (34:08):
I just think from where we are and having to
rebuild the offensive defensive lines that would be the Betty line.
I would take the over at seven because I think Washington,
our fans and our tradition and just the drive of
those young kids that have been recruited here will elevate
them and win a game or two that maybe they're
not favored in and get the seven wins, eight wins.
(34:30):
He's the greatest coach that we've ever had here. At
the University of Washington.
Speaker 5 (34:33):
But you say that, but I swear two years ago
the over under for coach came to the board was six.
Speaker 4 (34:39):
Okay, he he hit over there. I'm okay with that.
Speaker 2 (34:43):
I want Greg to be fully edgeummericated on Weber State
