Speaker 3 (00:35):
All right, boys and girls, welcome back on a very
very busy Wednesday night right here on ninety three to
three KJARFM.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
We have a lot to get to between now and.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Seven o'clock, and a lot to get to after seven o'clock.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
Tonight.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
We are awaiting the end of a pretty significant event
across the street at Teamobile Park, Check and Buck.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
We'll have you for.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Baseball's best plustgame show when the game is over. But
in the meantime, it's time for the cors Light Husky
Honks normally on two Tuesday at four o'clock, but we
appreciate the flexibility the versatility of two of the greatest
athletes the city of Seattle and the state of Washington
have ever seen, Greg Lewis and Mario Bailey. The Hosky
(01:13):
Hawks are here big thanks to our friends at Frost
Brewed cors Light, and guys, we're talking about a magnificent
performance by Demon Williams on Saturday. But before we get
to that and the game that Number two had, Greg
will start with you. Hey, dude, Huskies are five and one,
and I went away from Bowl eligibility at the halfway
point of the regular season, and now all of a sudden,
(01:36):
we can start to dream. I think about maybe doing
bigger and better things than what this football team accomplished
last year.
Speaker 5 (01:43):
Well, I mean, if you look at the schedule at
the beginning of the year, best case scenario was probably
five and one at this market and season, And here
we are. Say what you want. We've won every game
that we're supposed to win. We've gone on the road,
we won a big ten game on the road, we've
won away from Husky Stadium, done everything to show improvement
over last year, and now we're in a great position
(02:06):
to start thinking about you know, what, do our goals
look like at the end of the year, how good
can we be? What can we accomplish? And again I've
said this a couple of times, I'm not sure they're
ready to compete for a championship. But right now, if
you're the coaching staff, you can stang in front of
that team. Every goal that you have this year is
in front of you. Everything that you want to accomplish,
(02:26):
you were in a position to accomplish that right now.
So let's keep working hard, let's get better, and let's
keep this thing goaling.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Yeah, and Mario, you look at the games that you
Dub's got left. Obviously we've been putting kind of every
game in a bucket, you know, one of two separate buckets,
Category one. We've talked about this as a category that
maybe the Huskies should win those games. Ucla was in
that bucket. I don't know if we still put Ucla
in that bucket, guys, after what's been happening the last
couple of weeks down there at the Rose Bowl. But
(02:56):
Purdue is certainly in that bucket. Wisconsant guys. I mean
there there fans Mario and Madison. They want to run
Luke Fickle out with a pitchfork in Wisconsin after the
way they got hammered by Iowa over the weekend, and
then a game like this on Saturday is kind of
a fork on the road type of game, right like
how good is Michigan and we can talk more about
Michigan in is just a second. But five and one
(03:17):
with the way the offenses bounced back since the Ohio
State debacle.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Are you pleased by Mario?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Are you satisfied with the progress this football team has
made after six games.
Speaker 6 (03:29):
I'm not necessarily satisfied with progress because I felt like
the last two weeks, the last two games, we struggled
in the first half and not did what we should
have done.
Speaker 7 (03:39):
But what Greg said is absolutely correct. If you looked
at the beginning of the season, you would think that
we'd be five and one, and we are five and one,
and that with what matters the most. We actually went
on the road, won our first Big ten victory on
the road.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
We've taken care of business.
Speaker 7 (03:55):
Last year we had some games where we messed up
as far as penalties and cost ourselves a lot, and
this year we're actually taking care of business. So I'm
happy with that, and I feel like our offense can
play with anybody in the nation, so we can go win. Actually,
when you look at the schedule, we can win the
rest of these games. If you're looking at the schedule.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
Yeah, I think you know. Some of the things though
that Mario mentioned.
Speaker 5 (04:20):
For me bodes well with our progress, because I still
think there have been times that we've made some mistakes.
We've had some foolish penalties, we've had miskicks and turnovers.
All of that we saw in the first half Friday night.
But we are so much a better team that we
can overcome those things now. I think the talent that
we have, and it really squarely falls on number two
(04:42):
that even though we might not play at optimum one
hundred percent level, we're good enough to win games against
these teams playing a half almost. I mean, Demal Williams
is that good. There might be folks who and you know,
I understand we're watching the Mariner game on Friday night
and didn't really get this yearly in on that performance,
and I'm sure we'll break it down, but this kid
(05:04):
is so good.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Despite the fact.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
That we made some mistakes and penalties, we missed the
kick hill, despite the fact that our starting offensive line
on the left side isn't playing right now, We're still
winning football games, and offensively, we're still putting up numbers.
I mean, I can only imagine what will happen if
and when we get some of these guys back and
we play a game where there are no mistakes, you know,
(05:28):
no issues with the offense. Especially. I think this team,
you know, the sky is the limit. I think Demand
Williams driving this car, you know, has it running, you know,
in high gear, and even if there's a detour, he's
fast enough to get us back on track.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Well, and let's go back, guys and talk about number two.
You know, I wanted to kind of get some of
the you know, just initial thoughts on where the football
team is at out of the way.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
But holy cow, are you kidding me?
Speaker 3 (05:53):
DeMont Williams guys goes out there on Friday night against
Rutgers and breaks Michael Panix's school record for total yards
in a game that was in twenty twenty two against
Arizona five hundred and thirty eight yards. He becomes the
sixteenth FBS player to throw for four hundred and run
for over one hundred, and he's only the second Big
Ten quarterback to do that.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
By the way, and Greg and Mario.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
If either one of you can name the first I
will give you each one hundred dollars cash the next
time I see you. Greg, any idea who that first guy.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
Was, man, I would have said, no, let me play.
I can think of stuff like that. Let me just
give you it's a quarterback from Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
I can't think you no, neither one of you will
ever get it. There's just no point in even trying.
It's a guy named Zach Kustock who played for Northwestern
against Bolden Green in two thousand and one. But that's
the point, Mario, right, is that all those great Ohio
State quarterbacks that we're talking about, justin Fields, Dwayne Haskins,
you know, whatever Michigan's toss out there, whatever Penn State
(07:01):
is tossed out there, nobody's ever done what Demon Williams
did in this conference until Friday night.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
And that's why, Look, I'll go ahead and say it.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
We can talk about you know, uh, Dylan Ryola, we
can talk about Julian Saying. We can talk about Jade
and Mayava Francis, excuse me, Fernando Mendoza and Indiana I
don't know if I trade any of them for DeMont
Williams right now.
Speaker 7 (07:23):
Mario, No, I wouldn't and said it since the beginning
of the season. He must see TV. The crazy part
about that game is he made it look easy, like
you wouldn't even know he threw for four hundred and
ran four one hundred and thirty six or whatever. He
made that look easy, like it wasn't even trying to
do that. He should be National Player of the Week
(07:45):
with stats like that, and everybody would be talking about
his game if it wasn't for the man is what
he did is remarkable and I don't even think he
broke a sweat.
Speaker 5 (07:55):
Yeah, this kid has a skill set that you know,
it reserved for great guys that we you know, see
on Sundays. You know, guys like Lamar Jackson and Kyler Murray,
you know some names that kind of throw out there.
And the thing about this guy, Softie, he's eight nineteen
years old, he's a true sophomore. This is his only
like sixth, seventh, eighth start of his college football career,
(08:19):
so he's just going to get better. This kid is
going to, you know, show up week after week with
an opportunity to do some things that no one's ever
seen before. You know, right now, you say he's on
the list with sixteen. By the time this kid leaves
mat Lake, he could be on a list of one
where it's just them on Williams. So I'm excited about
this kid. And again, the thing about it what matters
(08:42):
the most for the Huskies is is he keeps them
in ball games. He gives them an opportunity to win,
regardless of what else is going on around him. I know,
we didn't see that kind of performance against Ohio State.
So only the elite of the elite and the best
of the best have an opportunity to control this offense.
I think anytime any given Sunday or actually, you know,
(09:04):
our sport is played on mainly Saturday nights. Every now
and then on a Friday, this kid gives you an
opportunity to beat in the ballgame. So he's a difference maker.
He's the guy that is going to always make sure
that the Huskies have a chance to be successful.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
Yeah, and it could have been worse.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
I mean, he could have had five touchdowns and then
fumbled near the goal line on that run.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
And that's the thing for me, guys that you mentioned Mario,
I think.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
It was you that mentioned some of the mistakes that
they made, that they had penalties on kickoffs that pin
them back, they had to fumble, obviously, they had some
personal fouls in this game. On Saturday, this game or Friday,
this game should have been even worse than it was. Right,
and we talk about what they're doing in the second half,
what they're doing in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Does anybody have any concerns at.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
All about how slow they're starting, Like we talked about
this after the Maryland game, right, like the Ohio State game.
All right, just kind of dismiss it whatever, But then
Maryland you're down thirteen to nothing, Rutgers you're down.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
Thirteen ten at the half.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
They have outscored their opponents in the second half, Mario,
one hundred and forty two to fifty one, but they've
been outscored thirty to thirteen in the first half.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
In their three Big Ten games they've played.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
So, I mean, you don't want to beat yourself up
over it too much because you're five and one, But
if that continues, eventually someone's going to creep up and
get you.
Speaker 7 (10:19):
Yeah, that concerns you. I'm sure it's the biggest concern
for coach. You can't keep starting slow like that because
teams aren't going to allow you to come back and
they're going to run the ball and figure something out.
So it has to be concerning. Just like last year,
our concerns were all the penalties and all the the
States rating games. We have to show up everything if
(10:39):
we want to make it to the next level. So
it's a concern for each coach.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
Yeah, I'll jump on the other side of the ball
softy for a minute to talk a little bit about
what I have seen from Ryan Walters and the defense,
because these deficits going into halftime do somewhat, you know,
matter on the defensive side of the ball is well,
certainly they've kept us in the games by not giving
up touchdowns on some of the drives. But what I
(11:05):
have seen in the first half some mistackles and things
like that that we were mentioning in this game. But
more than that, ski wise, it seems like they play
a little koi in the first half. They sit back
in a lot of zone coverages. You know, they're kind
of like a boxer who's kind of jabbing and prodding
a little bit in the early rounds and then in
the second half, Ryan Walters comes up with these game
plans where they're more aggressive, they're taking more chances, they're
(11:28):
disguising their coverages better, they're causing confusion with the quarterback,
they're getting tackles for losses, they're getting more pressure, more sacks,
all of that.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
In the second half.
Speaker 5 (11:37):
So it seems like, you know, the game plan sometimes
going in is to kind of feel our opponent out.
You know, my favorite boxer for those hardcore boxing fans
is Bud Crawford, and you know, he says he doesn't
watch a lot of film. He likes to figure out
what the other fighter is doing in the first three
or four rounds.
Speaker 4 (11:55):
Then he has his game plan because he's seen what
they do.
Speaker 5 (11:57):
It kind of seems like, to some degree, we kind
of wait for the first second quarter, see if we
can figure out what they're doing on offense, and then
unleash a great game plan the second half of round.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
Walters has done just that.
Speaker 5 (12:08):
He has been a second half game plan or adjustment
maker and made this defense really good in second half
of football games.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
Yeah, they're eleventh in the Big Ten and total yards
thirteenth and passing yards allowed per game, and then rushing
defense their third the third and rushing yards at eighty
three yards a game, So not bad at all in
that category, but you know, yeah, I mean the defense
was without Jacob Monu on Friday night.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
We kind of noticed that during the game. He didn't
play because.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
He's your situation here.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
He's actually suing the NCAA to try to get a
red shirt year, and if he wants the redshirt year,
then he's going to have to sit out the rest
of the season.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
And I don't know, I mean, do we want Mario.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
Jacob Monu to get the red shirt year because I
kind of want to see the guy play right now.
I think he's a phenomenal player and when he's out there,
I think he's he might be your best defender.
Speaker 7 (12:57):
I want him to get it because that's what he wants.
But selfishly, of course, he's been playing great. I want
him out on the field. We need him and he's
been out there making plays and we need as many
playmakers as we can on the defense. Alex McLoughlin, I
think that's how you pronounced his last name. Is our
biggest playmaker, but Manu is right behind him, so selfishly,
(13:17):
I hope he doesn't, but of course I wanted to
get what he wants.
Speaker 5 (13:21):
Yes, you know, it's an interesting situation softly, because the
red shirt rule says you can play in four games
and still red shirt, and so far, because of the injury,
he's only played in two.
Speaker 4 (13:31):
And there's conversations I'm hearing that they.
Speaker 5 (13:34):
May play him in the Oregon game and maybe the
Michigan game or two games that really you know, matter
in the sense of, you know, can we But I'll
say this, Devin Bryant, I think extray Alexander and now
with our true freshman linebackers Andreas Rady Sale, those guys
(13:54):
are all playing well, stepping up, you know, in the
absence of Buddha and Manu. Those guys are playing well.
So it might be a luxury that we have that
we can save Manu for those games where we might be,
you know, not necessarily the favorite Illinois and Oregon or
something like that. So the coaches got to kind of
figure out what they're going to do. But that's an
(14:16):
interesting situation where a guy has a great game the
previous week, you know, down in Maryland, he's all over
the field making plays and then all of a sudden,
he's a you know dnp CD did not play coach's decision,
which is you know the acronym that happened on Friday night.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Well, I guess it just comes down to one thing.
What are we looking to accomplish this year?
Speaker 4 (14:40):
Right? Like?
Speaker 3 (14:40):
Do we start to dream stupid ridiculous dreams about making
a run and maybe being on the doorstep of the
college football playoff? Which sounds it sounds ludicrous, Greg, because
as of right now, the freaking team isn't even ranked
for god's sakes, right, they're what twenty eighth I think
overall third team out and they're receiving votes category. But look,
(15:00):
if they beat Michigan this Saturday at the Big House,
and we'll talk more about that coming up on the show,
and there are only five five and a half point dogs,
it's not ludicrous to think that Washington could walk into
Michigan and get a win against the Wolverines.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
But I mean, what.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
Are guys come on like the realistic goals honestly that
this team could potentially accomplish this year.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
Well, we as fans and you know, talking his in
the media, can you know, dream all we want and
throw up ridiculous stuff up there. You know, the coaches
are telling their team one game at a time, one
step at a time, but we can beat anybody on
our schedule and all those kinds of things, which you
know is what coaches are going to always say and do.
But I think this team, with the offense that we
(15:43):
have and the way we played defense in the second
half of games and waybe we'll get that started a
little earlier. I look at our schedule. Things change as
the season goes along. Look how did UCLA was, so
you never really know that could be, you know, a tough,
tough game. But also Michigan last week not keep up
with an offense like USC's, and I think our offense
(16:03):
is every bit good as USCS, So I think that
game could be won. You can win any game with
your schedule. I think right now the only one that
you circle and go, are we ready to play a
you know who?
Speaker 4 (16:15):
Team? Right now?
Speaker 5 (16:17):
That's the only game where I think it's going to
be a tough, tough challenge. But it's here at Husky Stadium.
Who knows by the end of the year where we're
all at.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
Well I know who you're talking about, Mario knows you're
talking about. And those guys just lost to Indiana. I mean,
Indiana might be the best, you know, they might be
very good. But then all of a sudden, Oregon's winever
Penn State doesn't look nearly as good as it did
a couple of weeks ago. I mean, Mario, I just
look at this schedule the rest of the way, and
yes it pains us to say it, but the Oregon
game on paper looks like by far and away, the
(16:46):
toughest game they play the rest of the season. UCLA, Perdue, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois.
Let's say, and I hope nobody's listening right now, let's
say that they don't get the game at Husky Stadium
against those Basters from down south, and they finished their
their season ten and two. They finished the regular season
ten and too, Mario, in the Big Ten, that is
typically a team that is at least going to be
(17:08):
in the playoff conversation, is it not?
Speaker 7 (17:11):
I think I keep comparing this team to the nineteen
ninety team with Greg Lewis leading the way. But you
go down to Michigan, and I watched that Michigan sc game.
You go down to Michigan and win in the Big House,
then everything is on the table. I don't care about Oregon,
I don't care about anybody. We could actually beat anybody
on this schedule. So as a competitor, as a coach,
(17:34):
as a player, if I'm Demond Williams, I'm thinking we're
sneaking in this team. We're gonna go to the Big
House and win, and we're gonna take the rest of
this schedule on. You should be thinking that way. And
I honestly feel what Greg said about our offense. Our
offense can play with anybody, and knowing that we have
an offense like that, we're capable of anything.
Speaker 5 (17:52):
We could score from anywhere on the field because Demond
Williams is that good. I think Mario mentioned early in
the seas that teams are going to start keying on
Jonah Coleman and limit his productivity, and I think that
Rutgers went all in on that.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
But you know what that does.
Speaker 5 (18:09):
That puts the ball in Demond Williams hands, who I
think is an even more dangerous player. So now teams
have seen what it looks like on film at the
highest level. If you sell out to stop Jonah Coleman.
This is who is going to have his hands on
the ball, and do you really want that? Now defense
has got to start guessing and got to start, you know,
(18:31):
not necessarily giving DeMont Williams that much opportunity. And now
Jonah Coleman maybe gets back into a groove, and now
you have a flow. And now you guys talked a
lot about that second receiver. I think Desmond Roebucket said,
I am him. I am that guy, even though I'm
a freshman, I can get it done. And Denzel Boston
is still playing really well. And now our tight end
(18:53):
has gotten involved. Decker de Graf made some catches this
last week help. I think even our other tight end,
big blocking tight end, made a couple of grabs. So
I think this office is just getting better. And guess
what fellas their starting left side of the line isn't
even playing right. Now you get those two guys back,
and this offense is going to be able to win
at a high level.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
Now you mentioned Jonah Coleman. I want to come back
Greg and talk more about him. I want to get
Mario's thoughts on Desrobuck. I'm looking at Jonah Coleman's numbers
and just the first three Big Ten games this year,
and if you just look at only conference games, guys,
he's sixteenth in the conference in.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
Rushing in the Big Ten.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
He really hasn't done much of anything once Big Ten
plays started. But you know who's number eighteen right behind
him as Demon Williams. So you're right, that's opening up
number two big time. All right, we're gonna break more

Speaker 3 (20:54):
Greg Lewis, Mario Bailey, Dave Softy, Maler, Husky Hanks. Let's
talk about Joonah Coleman. We thought Joe Coleman would be
the focal point of this offense, and so far we
are wrong. It is not Jonah Coleman as Demon Williams.
Jonah Coleman the last game against Rutgers fourteen carries for
forty four yards, and Greg the last two against Maryland
thirty two carries for just over one hundred yards combined.
(21:18):
In the last two games is also sixteenth and the
Big ten in rushing if you just include Big ten games.
But none of that seems to be a poor reflection
of number one, does it?
Speaker 4 (21:28):
No note at all?
Speaker 5 (21:29):
I think Mario, I'm gonna call them the soothsayer was
correct as we were watching the.
Speaker 4 (21:34):
First few games than he was saying.
Speaker 5 (21:36):
That teams are going the key on Jonah Coleman and
we're going to have to find other ways to win.
And that is what's happening. People have decided to choose
their poison and say, well, we want to make the
sophomore quarterback who's slight of frame, whose slight unexperience beat us.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
And frankly, they've.
Speaker 5 (21:55):
Taken away Joonah Coleman, which might be a smart move
on their part going in, But unfortun has worked out
for him because Dumont Williams is very capable of making
us into a winning offensive football team. But I'll say this,
jo Floord Jonah, He's still running hard, he's still fully engaged.
He's made himself a factor in the past game. I
(22:16):
mean he's up until probably this week, was our second
leading receiver and yard is wise.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
He still may be. I haven't looked at the number two,
number two, he's still number two receiver on the team.
Speaker 5 (22:25):
He's blocking hard, he's running hard, he's doing all the
necessary things to play winning football. Teams have just decided
that that's the thing they're going to take away, uh
And for the game on Friday and down in Maryland
to their demise, they decided to take away Joonakoman because
they've been hurt by Demand Williams and it's just you know.
Speaker 4 (22:45):
That factor.
Speaker 5 (22:45):
And I think the other thing, just purely with his
rushing statistics that you know has to be taken intoto
consideration is that the left side of the offensive line
right now is playing with two number twos on that side,
and that can have an impact on the run game
because I think Carver Willis and John Mills were actually
firing off really hard on the left side and giving
(23:06):
him a lot of running lanes that aren't necessarily there
right now.
Speaker 3 (23:08):
Yeah, Well, Mario Deman is on pace for thirty two
hundred and fifty six passing twenty touchdowns a couple of picks.
He's also on pace to run for just under eight
hundred yards and eight touchdowns this year, which would put
him over four thousand total yards combined in the Big Ten.
I mean other conferences, the old Pac twelve, the Big twelve,
maybe even the ACC maybe even in some years the
(23:31):
SEC when Joe Burrow was going bananas and guys like
twa down there may not sound like a lot, but
in this conference, man, there's not many players in many
schools that have athletes like Demon Williams. So I don't know, man,
you mentioned it, Mario, that kind of everything should be
on the table for this football team as far as
what they can accomplish the rest of the way.
Speaker 1 (23:50):
I think we should be.
Speaker 3 (23:51):
Talking about Demon Williams as a potential Big Ten Player
of the Year.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
No kidding.
Speaker 7 (23:55):
He's definitely close in the stat that you didn't mention
that he's at like seventy five percent completion for his passes.
That's ridiculous, that's unheard of. Actually, Greg used to say
that Jonah was the straw that stirs the drink, and
I kept telling them it was going to be demnd
But Greg is absolutely correct in saying that Jonah is
(24:15):
still a big playmaker, and I love how coach uses
him to make sure that we get in the ball
and figure out ways even though teams are keening on him,
but Deman Williams should be in the category if he
continues to do what he's doing, a Big Ten Player
of the Year.
Speaker 3 (24:30):
Yeah, Greg, are we talking about a potential Big Ten
Player of the Year or are we just being husky
Hanks on this radio show.
Speaker 4 (24:37):
Well we are husky Hanks and so you know that
councilor something.
Speaker 5 (24:40):
But no, I mean what he's doing on the If
you take and again, if you miss Friday, you were
watching the Mariners, you know, try to cap you know,
cap off the series win to get to the American
League Championship Series. I understand, but you missed one of
the greatest performances that I have ever seen from a quarterback.
And that's not hyperbole. I mean the way he engineered
(25:02):
drive at their drive in that second half, the big
plays that he made. I mean really, from the first
play of the game, I think first or second played
the game, he had a run that was over fifty yards.
Speaker 4 (25:12):
This kid is the real deal.
Speaker 5 (25:14):
And I think, you know, by the end of this season,
when we all said and done, you know, the kid
has one more year and that year could be historic
for him, something that I think has never happened here
before where a Husky has actually won the Heisman Trophy,
he could be in that conversation. So Big Ten Player
of the Year this year is kind of the warm up,
and then next year, you know who knows.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
A a wei upset? I mean upset maybe the wrong word.
I'll be honest with you. I don't really care. I mean,
if they win their Saturday, it'll take care of all
of this. But are we irked, Mario that this football
team at five and one is not ranked.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
Yeah, that's a little disappointing.
Speaker 7 (25:49):
That just goes back to when we played about the
East Coast bias and people not looking at Washington because
there's no way at five and one, and we had
this dynamic offense lared by demand that we shouldn't be
ranked in the top twenty five.
Speaker 5 (26:03):
And I got our one loss. We have the best
one loss than anybody in the country. That is to
the Ohio State University, who has probably the best defense
I've seen in college football in quite some time. So
I think the only thing we're missing, according to the pundits,
is that big signature win now going down to the
(26:24):
Big House, even though they took it on the chin
to USC this past weekend. To me and my mind,
is still a big signature win for this program. So
they're gonna make us earn it. They are absolutely going to,
you know, telling us that, hey, we're going to make
you earn it by having a big win if you
want to get into our top twenty five, So let's
do that this week, and you know, shut everybody up
(26:45):
and make it a no brainer.
Speaker 7 (26:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (26:47):
I don't know if the country would look at that
as a signature win or not.
Speaker 1 (26:51):
I think people that.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
Aren't really paying attention would because they still see a
win at Michigan, right and a win at Michigan no
matter where Michigan's ranked, and right now they're not ranked.
I think in the generalize of the public still carries
a lot of weight. But do we like the fact
I got a text from a buddy of mine on Saturday?
Do we enjoy the idea of playing Michigan Mario coming
(27:14):
off them getting cream by USC or would we rather
have seen them a little fat and happy after a
win over the Trojans on Saturday.
Speaker 7 (27:22):
Honestly, it doesn't make a difference. I don't care. We're
going to the Big House and Michigan is still Michigan,
They're still going to be ranked. Doesn't matter if they're
coming off.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
They're not ranked, they're not ranked at all.
Speaker 7 (27:33):
The rank they're right in front of us doesn't matter.
We're still going to the big House and they're still
considered a good team. So I don't think it matters
either way.
Speaker 5 (27:45):
Yeah, I think this is a perfect opportunity for us
to believe that we can win anywhere, anytime. And Michigan
has you know, us in Michigan have over the last
three years, three or four years, have played three times.
We won one, they won twice. So I still think that,
you know, for us, Michigan's believes that they can come
in and just physically dominate us, that they can just
(28:06):
bully us, run the ball and don't have to do much.
And that's where they'll be making a mistake, because I
believe that they're going to have to try to score
some points and keep up with us offensively. And that's
what USC's mentality was going into the game. Let's unleash,
let's throw the ball down the field, let's turn it
into a track meet. And I think that's you know
a little bit what the Hussies will do because we
got the fastest man on the track in a track meet,
(28:28):
So I think that bodes well for us. But I
think again, where that Michigan on the road will solidify
enough in folks mind to give us, you know, entry
into their top twenty five. And it doesn't matter. I
like us having a little chip on our shoulder.
Speaker 4 (28:41):
Mario.
Speaker 5 (28:42):
To be honest with you, I think that you know Michigan,
whether they're fat and happy.
Speaker 4 (28:49):
Or whether they're motivated, doesn't matter. What I think matters.
Speaker 5 (28:51):
Is is that we take this as disrespect and we
go in and we play our best ball game and
try to prove a point.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
Yeah, Aiden Hudkinson is not walking through that door.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
Guys, for the Michigan Wolverines, this is not the twenty
twenty three defense that we saw. They are sixth and
the big ten right now in in total defense and
just under three hundred yards a game.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
I'm not saying they're terrible.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
I'm not saying you Dub's gonna walk in there and
put up a crooked number.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
But I think you Dub's gonna be able to move the.
Speaker 3 (29:18):
Ball on these guys way more than they were a
couple of years ago.
Speaker 1 (29:22):
All Right, We're gonna break, come.
Speaker 3 (29:23):

Arecord Is brought to you by Mitsubishi Heating and Air Conditioning.
Time for the Bring the hyper Heat Defensive Player of
the Game powered by Mitsubishi find your local Home Comfort
(30:01):
MVP on ducklasshome Comfort dot Com. Greg who gets the
award for the winner of Rutgers on Friday?
Speaker 5 (30:08):
Man Well, I'm hoping that they will allow us to
do a dual award this week. With Jacob Manu and
Buddha both being out at linebacker, the two guys who
started the season off, probably not as highly talked out
talked about Xrey, Alexander and Bryant. Those two guys played
really well in this game, especially in the second half.
So my voters for the two inside linebackers Brian Alaxander.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
Alli, Mario, I hope that wasn't one of here guys,
because Greg just took two of him selfishly he did.
Speaker 7 (30:35):
I would have went with Alexander. I thought he played
an overall great game.
Speaker 1 (30:39):
Okay, well, let's talk about Desrobuck.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
Let's talk about a guy that's on pace for almost
seven hundred yards receiving and four touchdowns. Mario Bailey, are
you ready now to say that we have found a
number two wide receiver behind Denzel Boston.
Speaker 7 (30:53):
I'm not only willing to say we might have found
a number two, but we might have a one A
and one B.
Speaker 4 (30:58):
Like.
Speaker 7 (30:59):
I think he's coming on strong. Like I feel like
demand is starting to look for the young man, and
he's a playmaker, so he could easily be one B.
I see Denzel still playing well, and we still try
and go to Denzel, but I see that demand is
now starting to look for Robot in different situations.
Speaker 5 (31:15):
Yeah, I think if and when Denzel gets extra attention.
You know, safety's over the top, you know, double teams
and things like that. You certainly have a guy who
should be able to get open against single coverage. And
that's what he's showing right now that he runs really
good routes and his hands are really really good.
Speaker 4 (31:32):
I love the way he.
Speaker 5 (31:33):
Catches the football with his hands. He made the great
grab a couple of weeks ago down in Maryland, scored
a touchdown to get his feet down to secure a win.
So we know he can make big plays. He can
be counted on down the wire. No situations too big
for him. So I'm excited about the young man. I
think he's the number two receiver this year. But to
(31:54):
what Mario's point is is, I think next year we
have a guy who definitely can step up and say,
all right, Zill's done. He's in the NFL. Now, early
round draft pick. I'm the number one guy.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
Now, well, let's talk about this Michigan team. Guys appoint
in Preview brought to by Valentine Roofing. Just like stopping

(32:24):
So Michigan loses to USC. They get hammered by the
Trojans thirty one to sixteen. They're number six and the
Big ten in total defense, number ten and passing defense,
and their number one in rushing defense. But Greg USC
and Mario, you mentioned you watched the game. They had
to walk on running back named King Miller go for
one hundred and fifty eight and a touchdown nine yards
(32:48):
of carry on the Michigan defense on Saturday. So what
did you guys see? Mario will start with you and
what do you think the key to victory is going
to be? This weekend in ann Arbor.
Speaker 7 (32:58):
I was more impressive to you see defense because Michigan
has just as many weapons as US. And the game
their offense, their backups, marsh I think his name is
Andrew marsh the receiver had a great game and their
backup running back Marshall had a great game. Their two
backups had a great game, but USA's defense stifled him
(33:18):
and their quarterback I feel like we can, we can
do some things with him. He's still young, he's still
a ratic. He's not playing consistent football.
Speaker 5 (33:27):
I think that the Michigan football team right now is
struggling a little bit. They had came in rank fifteenth,
and they tried to go with the same old Michigan program.
We're gonna run the ball, we're gonna stop the run,
We're gonna win this football game at USC showed them
that there's levels to this, that speed kills, that this
is an offensive this this Big ten has a new
(33:50):
you know, waving town with teams who play really good
offense like Oregon, USC, Washington, and so I think Michigan
is going to have to learn how to, you know,
play a little bit more dynamic football. I just think
they're not dynamic and sudden. They came in, they paid
I think ten million dollars for Bryce Underwood as a
freshman incoming quarterback, and he hasn't been great.
Speaker 4 (34:12):
I think this past.
Speaker 5 (34:13):
Week he threw fro about two hundred yards, two touchdowns
and an interception. But that's not good enough when you're
playing teams that can really sling the thing like us,
who can really be dynamic in their offense. So I
think Michigan right now is just a mediocre, middle of
the pack Big Ten team. There's still a good program.
But when teams who can score the ball, who can
(34:36):
throw it and run it, I think Michigan struggles.
Speaker 3 (34:39):
Yeah, well, I mean you got a situation here obviously
now where Sharon Moore is starting to take some heat
from his fan base, right he inherits a national championship
football team, and all of a sudden, Wow, how about
this for a shock? They got a hard time living
up to Jim harbaugh standards. James Franklin was fired, our
old buddy Jonathan Smith got whacked over the weekend by
Michigan State. You see, got a brand new head coach already,
(35:02):
and Tim Skipper at least an interim guy with Jerry
nu Heisel calling plays, and then Wisconsin fans want Luke
Fickle's head on a freaking stick in Madison.
Speaker 1 (35:10):
Dude, Greg, it is unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (35:12):
That we haven't even reached, you know what, the middle
of October yet already are in the middle of October
and we've already had three coaches fired and may have
a fourth.
Speaker 4 (35:19):
Yeah, this is the win now, generation.
Speaker 5 (35:22):
I mean, there are there are no more patient fans,
patient administrations. There's so much money involved in college sports
that one you can afford to get rid of coaches.
I mean, I know, the Penn's Day coach might you know,
Ego might be a little impacted right now, but he's
got forty nine fifty million reasons why he can ease
into this, you know, firing without that being a huge
(35:44):
blow for him and his family.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
But it's about you know, I think.
Speaker 5 (35:49):
Our guest on the show early on Friday talked a
little bit about how teams are going to get more
money based on wins and performance in the Big Ten,
the way the new deals are going to be struck,
and so people are looking for the best coach that's
going to give them the best opportunity to win because
it means more money. John Wilner, you know, specifically stated
(36:09):
that that the way the deal will be structured is
the teams that are winning, that go to bowl games
are gonna make more money. So teams aren't waiting around
to figure out if they got the right guy, if
they feel like there's something, you know, they can improve
on in their coaching situation, they're gonna do it.
Speaker 1 (36:23):
Mario, were you surprised at Penn State fired Franklin.
Speaker 7 (36:26):
No, not after the loss to Northwestern. It seemed like
he quit on them like it was over after that.
And you know, you feel bad about this win now.
But like Greg said, if you're gonna give me fifty million, yes,
my ego is hurt, but I'm gonna be okay.
Speaker 1 (36:41):
No question.
Speaker 3 (36:43):
I'm glad to hear that both of you guys aren't
fat and nuts by the way, that you wouldn't say,
you know, I'd rather keep my job.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
Let's do this, Let's get out of here.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
Fox Sports Radio will take you up until Baseball's Best
