Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, let's get to it over on nine fifty

(00:02):
am tonight. There's a Husky fan right there. He's got
my shirt at the whole spiel. What are you doing here?
The basketball game's up there. You're in the wrong spot.
Maybe you thought they were playing basketball taking the rail
up there?

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Later?

Speaker 1 (00:12):
Is that what he's doing? You're taking the light rail.
You're going up there tonight? All right? Nobody cares. Jason
Hamilton from the Husky broadcast crew is joining us right
now on the radio program. No better way to celebrate
the inaugural game of Dandy Sprinkle's second year than talking
to the color man of the week from the Big Ten.
Our friend, Jason Hamilton, How are you, man?

Speaker 3 (00:34):
I'm excellent. Did you just make that up? Because if
you did, I'm buying.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Absolutely, yes, yes, yeah, yeah. I mean I'd vote for
you if there was a vote for you, I definitely
vote for you. I don't know if Tony would vote.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
For you, but I would.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Hey, let's uh, let's talk about this team because there's
a lot of new faces and I guess look, there's excitement,
no doubt, you know. I saw Andy Katz out like
as Top twenty impact players and Desmond Claude was on there,
one of the new incoming guys, And the only concern
I've got, I guess, is that, man, you got to
get these guys to come together rather quickly. So what

(01:13):
have you heard, what have you seen about the offseason
that leads you to believe that these guys have a
chance of coming together here pretty fast and being a
good team.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
That's a great question. I mean, thirteen new faces, some
guys that come with a pedigree, have played a lot
of college basketball for the most part on this roster,
and so you know, for me, Safia, I'm as excited
probably coming into this season as I was in Mike Hopkins'
second year. I just feel like from a talent standpoint,

(01:44):
this is probably the best and deepest roster that we've
seen in a couple of years. And so it gives
me some nice hope. And as you said, you know,
there's some national buzz around this team a little bit,
even though they've been selecting sort of middle of the
pack in the Big Ten. But it is very difficult
to kind of hit the ground running when you've got

(02:05):
thirteen faces. Hopefully you expect experience to kind of lead
the way guys sort of having a good feel for
college basketball, so hopefully that gets them to a better
place quicker. But yeah, with a lot of guys trying
to fill out their roles, it's going to be an
interesting first month of the season.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
I'm fascinated to see how coach Sprinkle manages minutes and
egos because you've got an entire team that's made up
not only of starters from other teams, but stars from.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
Other teams, players of the year.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Right, we're accustomed to getting a ton of shots, So
I mean, guess what, everybody's not gonna be able to
take seventeen shots a game.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Yeah, no, you're You're You're absolutely right. I mean, you know,
that's the thing about the first game is everybody's happy
until minutes start getting dispersed. And you got guys like
Kimari Peterson, who was the so cap Player of the year,
had the ball in his hands, an awful Lon desmon
quad who had the ball in his hands an awful lot.

(03:05):
And then you bring in some new guys like Hannas Steinbeck,
a six' Eleven german kid who had an unbelievable exhibition
game AGAINST unlv who's got to play a bunch of,
minutes and you throw in the fact that you GOT Jj.
Maniquett really they're only true true point guard in my,
mind who's got to be on the floor and played
a great game in that exhibition as. Well so a

(03:25):
young player that needs to be on the. Floor so
minutes are going to be really. INTERESTING i, think you,
know coach is sort of like, this having a deep
roster because you can play with, lineups you can you,
know sort of hold it over a player's. Head take
if you're not playing, hard you're not playing, well we've
got another guy that can come in behind. You but
that also can create some. Discord so keeping everybody energizing
and fresh and hopefully getting enough touches is going to be.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Critical, well whose team is, this? RIGHT i mean like
back in the day? Day which man back in the
day is like twenty years. Ago now you knew whose
team it? Was Was Brandon roy's, team it Was Isaiah thomas's.
Team whatever is? This Desmond claude's, team is That zoom
Di aalos team is At wesleys? Team whose team is?

Speaker 2 (04:05):
This?

Speaker 3 (04:07):
YEAH i think from an experience, standpoint you probably look
to A Desmond claude, okay just because of the fact
that you, know he's played a ton of, games you
know has that. Experience but really there is no true defined.
Leader this is their team from day, one that that's gonna.

(04:30):
Come BUT i would say the default is probably you,
Know Desmond. Claude but for, me for me and you,
guys you guys know this about, ME i believe that
the point guard is the. QUARTERBACK i believe the point
guard leads the. Team and So i'm not sure That
Desmond claude is a true Point he's a big guard
that that has played in a. COMBO i foresee this

(04:51):
team actually become A Jj maniqutt. Team but that's a
far crack from where we are on day, one so
let me let me just say. That BUT i think
old for, TIME i think he will be the guy
with the ball in his, hands Helping Danny springkle get
players in the right, spot getting the guys the right
shots in the right. TOUCHES i think, EVENTUALLY i know it's.
Crazy as a, FRESHMAN i see it Going JJ's.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Way got it, Well, Jason we've had conversations over the
years about the point guard. Position that's exactly WHAT i
want from my point. Guard and that hasn't been the
case really At. Washington there's been a lot of ball,
dominant shot dominant point guards For. Washington when is the
last time you dub actually had a pass first court
general at the top of the.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
Key, boy you're you're gonna make me age. Myself i'm
gonna go back a long.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Time it might Be Jason. Hamilton we know you're old.
Already there's no point in fighting.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
It all. RIGHT i, KNOW i know you're older than me,
Though but here's the. Thing the thing about that, is you,
know that's just the evolution of the way that basketball
is is you, know you have a more combo scoring type.
Guard and So i'm not upset about. THAT i JUST
i THINK Jj bandicut is the type of player that

(06:07):
can do a.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Little bit of.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Both he can find his own, shot not down the open,
jumper but he's just more of a guy that's looking
to get everybody. Involved because a guy like you, know Dun,
diallo or a guy Like Desmond quad or or any
name anybody else on the roster that is more of
a ball Dominant Wesley yeate a ball dominant. Guard you

(06:29):
just cannot have that and not have the motion and
the movement in the, offense because that stagnates the. Offense
you have to have the ball, flow especially with guys
on this team that you know different guys can score.
It so that's WHY i go back to JJ. I
i just think he's a critical part of the.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
Team, well a lot of teams have a point, guard
a good point. GUARD a lot of teams have a
really good big. Man not a lot of teams have.
Both and if Jj mandiquid is what we think he,
is If Frank kepnon can stay healthy the entire, year,
wow what a combination that would. Be AND i, Remember,
dick you were there doing the show from The purdue

(07:07):
game and we Had danny on the Air, jason and
he kind of Ripped Frank kepnong a little. Bit he
came on the air and, said he's got to start
sucking it up and decide if he wants to play this.
Game he's got to get his ass back on the.
Court And i'm, wondering what have you seen from? Him
what have you heard About Frank kepnong's desire that makes
you think that he's ready to give this team twenty

(07:28):
five thirty games this?

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Year, YEAH i Think frank's, deal and Maybe danny just
hasn't said it this. EXPLICITLY i think it's more mental than,
physical you. KNOW i think he's been hurt so often
that sometimes it's in the back of his mind about being,
hurt which is crazy because you watch the way he.
Plays he actually plays. Recklessly he dives into the, stands

(07:49):
he's flying. Around SO i, know for the people that
are hearing me say, that they, say, well, gosh if
he was a little, nervous you'd think he'd have a
little bit of a m but and he. DOESN'T i
just think that he's gotten in his head a little
bit about getting. Injured so if he can release, that
and that's a tough thing from a sports psychologist type of,
standpoint but if he can release that and just play

(08:12):
freely and expect to play a full, season he's going
to help this team. Tremendously he's one of the few
true rim protector shot, blockers you, know not necessarily a
high volume score or anything like, that but a guy
that is an emotional. Leader we talked about leaders of the.
Team he's an emotional leader of this team and always has.
Been since he's been on my.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
Leg, well we thought there was going to be depth
of the big but there really isn't now With agnasovic
And treori. OUT i, mean how big a concern is
the front line?

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Depth, YEAH i mean that's Where Hannas steinbeck comes in.
HUGE i, mean as you don't want to put too
much pressure on him as a freshman to be the
guy on the block and really leading the. Way christian
needs to From Florida state is back and healthy or,
healthier but you, know obviously a more wiry guy Where

(09:03):
steinbeck is six, eleven two. Fifty so, yeah definitely it
was thought of it's going to be a position of
strength at least at the front, court and now with
a couple of, injuries it's going to be. Different Laysan.
Somerville another guy THAT i didn't, mention the transfer From
rutgers gives you a little bit of depth, There. Dick
but the one guy that you, Mentioned Jacob, adosovic to,

(09:24):
me he's a very pivotal player on this roster that
we won't seek for a couple of. Months the transfer
From lipscombe also another play of the year in The Atlantic,
sun partly because he's six' eight and can play inside
out And so he's tough on, the block but also
one of the better three. POINT shooters i think three
point shooting for this team is gonna. BE critical, i
mean that's just the way of. College basketball they. Don't

(09:45):
have if there's one criticism of, the roster they don't
Have A, TRAY. SIMMONS. C J, will cox, just knockdown
knockdown three. Point shooter they've got guys that have shot
it well on a, percentage basis so you're hoping they
can keep. That up but they're not. True shooters they're
they're guys that can shoot as long as the streak

(10:05):
is going, for him but they're not. Knockdown shooters jacob
is a GUY that, i think when, he's healthy becomes
one of the better three point shooters on. This roster
can play inside.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
Out Well jason hamilton's with us about to kick Off
the husky basketball season nine TO fifty am at. Eight
o'clock pregame at seven Thirty The Jetfish's Coach jetfish coaches
show by the way happening now as well OVER. On
Am so tony's gonna have to get in the car
at seven o'clock and find his butt to heck ed by.
Seven thirty So if jason goes on the year at

(10:36):
seven Thirty and tony's, not there you know Why because
tony got stuck. In traffic so something to keep an.
Eye On, but jason just one more from me before.
You go i'm looking on the non. Conference schedule you
know some, decent matchups You, Know, baylor Nevada, obviously utah
you know down, the road but certainly a manageable non.
CONFERENCE schedule i think for You, dub and because they're

(10:58):
so new and they have so many, new guys how
much of a break should they be getting if things
aren't clicking right Away in November? And december in, YOUR mind.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
I don't know about. A break i mean you want
you want to see players play the, right way play,
with passion and. PLAY hard i think if if fans are,
seeing that and maybe they come up against a team
that has their number on, that night you know that that.
CAN happen i think what what can't happen is just

(11:29):
laying down. A stinker that's not what you want. To
see even with guys that haven't played with each other,
a lot you still want to see. THE effort i
do think the schedule is. Fairly favorable as, you mentioned
the Game at baylor will be will. Be interesting they
do Play at washington stay early. As well but, you
know you want to be ready when you get Into
This big ten season because, you know as history showed,

(11:52):
last year it's it's a battle week in and. Week
out it's physical In The. Big Ten so washington's gonna
need to use that non conferences to, get prepared, get
experienced get guys yelling and, understanding roles and then really
rolling into, you Know Late December january february with a
great mindset to go out there.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
And, compete, well finally, For, me jam what, ABOUT tonight,
i mean what do we know About This arkansas pine,
Bloff team because a lot of times there's teams that
come into here to heck ed and four months from
now they end up going TO the ncaa tournament because
they win one of these. Small conferences is that this
type of team or should this be fodder For the?

Speaker 1 (12:27):
Huskies?

Speaker 3 (12:27):
Tonight, well yeah on paper it should. BE fought, i mean,
you know they're In The Southwestern, athletic conference finished near,
dead last dead last in that league, last year had
a lot of turnover on their roster like, everyone does ten.
New guys they were six and twenty five. Last year
they really struggled shooting. The ball they were the worst
free throw shooting team in the country last year at

(12:49):
just under sixty percent from the free. Throw line but,
you know with new guys on, the roster you just,
Never know dick and you just never know what their
transfer situation, looks like how well those guys are going to.
Play together, you know early they've got a couple of
guys with, you Know Good division one experience like. Most
TEAMS but i would say, on paper this shouldn't be

(13:11):
a Game that washington should or could lose if they're
playing the, right way just based on, you know the
Turnover At Arkansas. Pine bluff so it's a good startup
game For the huskies to begin the year and hopefully
they go out there and prove it for.

Speaker 1 (13:26):
Forty minute well you you do things the right way, every.
Game baby it's just a beacon of hope for all
young broadcasters. Out There And big ten commentator of, the week.

Speaker 3 (13:38):
That's right the newly appointed And Anointed Big king commentator
of the week that. Doesn't exist but thanks.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
You guys you're. The winner in. My, book baby, All,
right hey have fun, this year and let's let's TALK
sooner i be.

Speaker 3 (13:51):
Sounds good, appreciate. It guys thanks
