Speaker 1 (00:00):
Obviously we are we're here, made some tough choices today,
and we've parted ways with Scott Service, our major league manager,
and Jarrett to Hart, one of our major league hitting coaches.
And you know, I at first start by saying, as
it relates to this season, you know, we believe in
this team, and it has been a very difficult two
(00:20):
month stretch, particularly tough ten days, but you know, trying
to do what we can do with a team that
is telling us we need to do something a little
different than what we have. So I will then address
Scott's Service. You know, I've this is my thirty fifth
season in professional baseball in some capacity. I spent fifteen
(00:42):
of those years with Scott, and you know, he's been
a teammate. We've worked together at three different organizations. I
have trusted him in just about every way you can
with each job that he's done when we've worked together,
including the nine years that he's spent here with the
Mariners as our manager, I think he did a tremendous
job and stabilizing our major league clubhouse and building a
(01:04):
culture of work and focus. This has not been a
terrific run for us over the last two months, and
it was a very difficult decision to make, but I
thought one that our team was in need of, and
we need a different voice and a different direction, and
I think that can be provided by Dan Wilson, who
will be here to run the ball club tomorrow. And
(01:27):
I'll be glad to talk about some of the things
that I see in Dan, including a wonderful human being
who has a natural way of communicating, who is well
respected when he walks into a room, and who's been
with us in this baseball operation team for the last
nine years that we've been here, and has relationships with
many of the players and staff who will be with
(01:47):
him tomorrow. So with that, I'll open it up to
whatever questions you have.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
A first question from Ryan Divish.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Is Jerry is Dan an interim manager or is he
the manager moving forward?
Speaker 1 (02:02):
He's the manager moving forward, and just kind of what
went into that instead of just making him the interim
Why did you guys say he's the manager of room
for you know, he we've known Dan for you know,
the almost his entire professional career. He has been a
part of the Mariners family. We have known him here,
(02:23):
like I said, this group for nine years, and he
embodies the traits that I think will go a long
way toward paving the road the next stage in our journey. Now,
I also believe that that walking in the door as
an introm anything, and I've been that in my life.
Walking in the door as an introm anything doesn't really
allow you to lay the appropriate groundwork or get the
(02:45):
trust and the building that's required to be a good
leader in the major league space. So I trust those
things of Dan. We can't know a person better than
we know Dan Wilson, and I believe in both his
baseball and who he is as a person, and I
think that will resonate very well with our players.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
All Right, we'll go to Daniel Kramer and we'll be
dot com next and Jerry.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
Kind of building on that, were any other candidate's considered
And was there any sort of interview process before you
guys landed on Dan.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
No, I mean, it's it's not that time in a season.
You know, it would be very difficult and likely inappropriate
to try to run a multi person interview during the
course of a major league season. Obviously, this is very
sensitive information in a very sensitive time where you know
today aside you're playing games most days, and you have
(03:36):
to be aware of the various people that are going
to be affected by that. And you know, maybe, in
what has been one of my least favorite days in
my professional life today, the worst part of it was
the fact that Scott and JD found out about this
over the crawl of a news channel, and that it
crushes me. I know it hurts them a great deal,
(03:59):
and I want to be conscious of that through the
course of this process. But you know, I've spoken with
Dan over the course of the last three or four
days once we decided that that we were going to
make this move, and and he embraces the idea moving forward,
and I think he's, you know, he's looking forward to
whatever whatever the future of the Mariners looks like. And
I think he's he's always been a part of it,
(04:19):
and I think he's going to be a part of
it in a much bigger way moving forward.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Okay, we'll go to tim Booth next.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Hey, Jerry, where did you feel like Scott sort of
fell short or maybe lost some of the clubhouse over
the last two months?
Speaker 5 (04:34):
Is as you guys have struggled.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
No, I'm not going to get into any specifics, you know,
that's a it's unfair. It's unfair to Scott, it's unfair
to the team. This is you know, we've on June nineteenth,
we were ten games up in our division and we
wake up this morning and we find ourselves at five
hundred five games back in the last two months have
been very difficult for a lot of people. And know,
(04:56):
as I said, I think our team, you know, the
way our team has played recently, it's it's gone beyond
just struggling to play offense. And I think we just
need to we need to get back to believing and
who we are as players and who we are as
an organization, and and and I don't want to put
that type of pressure on Scott. You know, I've said
(05:18):
this publicly. Each of us has played our part and
the struggles that we've had as a team this year,
and our team is telling us we need to do
something differently, And this is this is that.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Okay Nico with Colon News.
Speaker 6 (05:33):
Jerry, thanks for the time, And you've mentioned the reasons
why and everything. And what was it about right now?
Maybe it's the off day, Maybe it was just this
recent road triple. Was it about this specific time today
to make this decision.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
Well, again, you consider along the way, we've considered all
the different options, whether it's moving forward, whether it's changing
our messaging, and we've talked about a lot of those
things internally and attempted to do some of those things eternally.
But you know, this was the end of a very
difficult road trip, you know, and you know after two
months of playing poorly, and it did land on an
(06:06):
off day. I do think that there is it's more
appropriate and dignified to be able to sit down, live
and meet at home rather than in a foreign place
and leave people high and dry. So again, not particularly
thrilled with how the news leaked out this morning, but
(06:28):
truly understand that trying to treat people the way people
should be treated, and it's much easier in your home environment.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Okay, we'll go to Shannon Dreer, Seattle Sports.
Speaker 7 (06:39):
Jerry, you've gone from three to two to one hitting
coach apparently right now, I guess Tommy is still with you.
You talk about wanting the players to believe in what
they are as hitter and who they are. How do
you go about that? What is the group right now
and what should it be right now? For these hitters.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
Well, you know, Tommy, we'll move forward with us. Tomorrow
we will have Dan will address the other changes that
will be made in additions to the staff, and I
think it's more appropriate that he talked through what he'd
like to do moving forward there.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Yeah, we'll go to Mike Farrell say all times.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
Yeah, Jerry, I'm wondering you mentioned talking to Dan over
the last couple of days, but in terms of dismissing Scott,
how long has that been an active consideration for you?
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Again, I don't think that's a very fair thing to
discuss for the future of the Mariners or for the past,
for Scott's service. It's not fair at all, as Scott
had a wonderful run while we were here together over
these years, and you know, he took us to a
postseason in twenty twenty two. I don't want to make
this about the things that haven't happened, but these have
(07:46):
been a very difficult couple of months and I think
we have a team that needs change. And as I said,
this is.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
That Daniel Kramer will be dot com.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Jerry, just kind of within the context of roster construction,
and you know the part where you've had some experience
with problems in that regard, specifically related to offense. You
know why and how do you feel that your front
office in this group can ultimately fix these issues long
term and lead the organization where it wants to go.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Clearly, we need a change and the way we're looking
at offense, the way we message offense, and you know,
our hitters have struggled this year. I have said this
prior to this year. While we may not be a
perfect offensive club, and I'm not sure that one exists,
you know, relative to our ballpark and with the adjusted figures,
(08:35):
we've had a league average to better offense for most
of the years that we've been here together, and that
includes you know, the entirety of Scott's tenure, and includes
last year and the year before. But this year it's
been very different, and I wish I could tell you why.
I don't know all of the answers, but I do
(08:55):
know we're asking questions, and hopefully we're asking the right
questions and we'll get to the right answer in time.
If we had a magic potion, we would have sprinkled
it sometime back. We don't, and the best we can
do is sit with our players and try to meet
them where they are and try to use the next
five or six weeks to build a more productive foundation
(09:17):
with a different language than we've been using with our
hitting programs.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
The next question Curtis Crabtree.
Speaker 8 (09:27):
Yeah, Jerry, when going into the season you had planned
to build a team to cut down on the strikeouts
and such. That was part of your philosophy coming How
shocked are you that this team is where it is
from a strikeout standpoint, from a batting average standpoint, from
an ops standpoint, that across the board, you guys have
underperformed to the level that you are right now.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Yeah, it's not just the strikeouts. It's a lot of
the things you mentioned. And you know, none of we've,
none of us have lived up to or met our
own expectations. And I think that goes for virtually all
of our players, it goes for our entire staff, goes
from me in our front office. We've you know, we've
fallen short in many ways. It's why we're sitting here today.
You know, we have not met our own expectations, not
(10:08):
the expectations that come from you know, prognosticators or fan base,
our own then, and I think that's you know, that's
when you really take a hard look in the mirror
and we are.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
All right.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
Andre's good job on that. Jerry Depoto with the media
saying they're not going to have a process to look
for a new man. Dan Wilson's the guy, said it
was the wrong time to have that exhaustive interview process,
to which I would say, you're right, maybe you should
have waited until the time was right. Come out and say, hey,
we're gonna give Dan Wilson every shot to keep this job.
We're gonna give Dan Wilson every shot to be our
(10:42):
full time guy, and when the decision is appropriate, will
make that decision. But they've already made the call, which,
as I told you earlier, Dick, I got no problem
with Dan being the guy, but I think there's a
way to go about doing it. I think it's sending
the wrong message to your fan base and kind of
unfair to Dan to put him in that position. But
Steven SUSA was on hold listening to Jerry Depoto. He's
(11:02):
with us right now for a little bonus time Monday's
courtesy of Tackle Time. But Steven Scott's service out. Jared
de Haart out Dan Wilson in is the new, brand
new full time manager.
Speaker 5 (11:14):
What do you think, Listen, I you know, I think
you can hear the consensus around people that are commenting
on Dan, and you know, he's one of the most
respected human beings you come across, you know, in my
short time there. He understands the game, he treats people
the right way. He's an unbelievable communicator, and I think
guys in that building automatic respective And so to your
(11:34):
point about going out and getting somebody, I just don't know.
I get there's a due process to things, and you know,
I just don't know that you're gonna find a better
candidate than Dan's who knows the organizations, has been there,
He's very beloved by the fans, and although it may
be pressure, I think there's nobody better in this situation
with the expectations on the line to handle it better
(11:55):
than Dan, and I think he's going to do an
outstanding job.
Speaker 9 (11:58):
Well, I hope you're right. I just don't know why
they hamstrung themselves in the search. And they said it
would be difficult to run a multi interview set up
during the season. I totally agree with that. So why
wasn't Dan just named the interim manager with an opportunity
to be the full time manager and then they could
do an exhaustive search in the offseason.
Speaker 5 (12:18):
Sure, and they still very very well might. But the
reality is is they still the Mariners despite all this
craziness of the last couplement. They still have a chance
to go to the playoffs. And so, you know, I
think for Dan's sake to just say, hey, don't look
over your shoulder, you know, just kind of go and
we'll go from there and kind of hand him the keys,
(12:39):
I think you're giving him the freedom to kind of
do his best, and then they can obviously turn from
that and pivot in the offseason. There's nothing stopping them
from do that. There's no contract in order. He's just
kind of giving Dan his vote of confidence. So I
wouldn't totally rule that out. But you know, if they
make the playoffs this year and they turn it back around,
there's no reason why he can't keep running with the teamdom.
(13:00):
I think if you've been around in you know, yeah,
I just again, I don't think that there was a
better candidate out there.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Yeah, I just think, like you said, though, there's a
way to do that right, and we're gonna give Dan
every chance to keep this job.
Speaker 9 (13:12):
Whatever.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
Blah blah blah.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
You know, words, you know, pick words that make sense,
not words that don't make sense, which they constantly are
doing over and over and over again. And I just
think that if Dan Wilson really wants the job full time,
then he'll have a chance to earn the job full time.
He very well may be the guy, but Steven, it's
just another example. Fans want to believe that this team
is turning over every rock, every rock, and when you
(13:33):
basically admit that you're not going to have a process
to find your next manager that you think you know
better than everybody and the guy sitting right underneath your nose,
I mean, just they just continue to send the wrong message.
I know it's not a baseball thing, it's more of
a pr thing, but they keep fumbling that bag. I mean,
you mentioned it right there, Jerry Depoto and I brought
this up off the air, and Dick and Anders laughed
(13:55):
at me. Is it possible they're saying all these things
now to make the players and the fans believe that
Dan's the full time guy. But if it turns out
that they don't want him to be the full time
guy that they still may yet make a move in
the season's over and hire somebody else.
Speaker 5 (14:12):
Yeah, it very well could be, you know. I mean,
I wouldn't put it past Jerry to do anything like that,
you know, but you know, I think the reality is
is you can't. You know. I think Jerry at some
level is also kind of hanging on to his job
a little bit, right, Like it's tough to put this
whole blame on Scott's service, and I get that, Like
(14:33):
we talked about on Monday, this kid has been tough,
and the guys that have been historically gone through stretches
like this, they didn't keep their job. But you know,
ultimately it's the guys on the team, right Like when
we looked at this lineup right now, and we look
at the guys across the field and the Dodgers lineup,
it's like you you wouldn't pick anybody on the Mariners
but maybe Julio to field that team. And that's that's
(14:54):
on Jerry. And so I think Jerry at some level
is trying to just lea everybody around him and do
the right and not necessarily do the due process. But
trying to make it, you know, slip through the crash
a little bit. Man.
Speaker 9 (15:07):
I appreciate Jerry trying to be respectful when he says
I wanted to wait until they got back home and
did it face to face. But in the process, you
lost three crucial games by not making a move after
losing five in a row to Detroit and Pittsburgh. You
could have done it then. Heck, you could have done
it on Wednesday, July twenty fourth, when you got swept
(15:30):
by an awful LA Angel team and you fell to
two games over five hundred, but you were still right
there in the West. You could have done it then
and not had to do it on the road. So
why do you think they waited so long?
Speaker 5 (15:45):
You know, I don't really have a good answer to that.
You know, I don't think there's really ever a good timing,
you know. I think he was trying to kind of
hope that at some point they'd have a good series
in LA and you could argue that, hey, they did
a really good team or turn it around because the
schedule gets really light the rest of the year, and
if they could have made it out of LA with
a series win, that it may have looked a little
bit different, but you know it's just it's just tough.
(16:07):
I like you said in the program, he they've been
together for a long time, and you know, I think
they've had this vision of trying to do it together.
And he was just hanging on as long as he
could and probably as long as ownership would allow him to.
And unfortunately and the part ways.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
Yeah, well, how about this, Steven before you go, and
we'll talk Monday. I'm sure some more nonsensal break between
now and Monday at five o'clock hurt us. You at
taco time if Dan Wilson called you up and said,
all right, man, what's the first thing you would do?
We're five games out, We're not twenty games out. Wild
Card probably slipping away, but Astros have a hard week
and a half coming up. We got maybe a softer
landing here. Let's let's let's let's wake up Monday, three
(16:43):
games out of first, whatever, four games out of first,
and go for it. What changes does Dan Wilson need
to make tomorrow to start turning this thing around.
Speaker 5 (16:52):
I think it's just a voice, right, It's reshifting the
vision that this team has had standing in front of
the boys and listening like, hey, look, we are five
games out. All we have to do is get within
three games by the last the second to last week
of September, and we're right in it, whether we control
our own destiny at that point or two games right
and just reset the expectations of what's going on. Help
(17:14):
them believe that he's got their back, because, like you
heard from Cam and Mabyns today on Twitter, it's like
nobody's really you know, got that from Scott at times.
And so getting to get these guys to believe that
Dan loves them, has their backs and they still have
a fighting chance. To get them to go out there
and fight like they haven't fought. I think that's the
only thing you can do at this point from dance perspective.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
All right, Bud, good stuff, man, appreciate you jumping on
with us, spending some extra time here. I'll throw in
a couple of extra burritos and we'll talk on Monday
at five.
Speaker 5 (17:42):
All right, man, All right, guys, sounds good.
