Speaker 1 (00:00):
They are NFL champions. The Seattlesyhawks have won Super Bowl
forty eight.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
As part of our non stuff coverage of the NFL,
this is Softy's weekly visit with Kevin Harlan.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
It's a pulldozer.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
He's a piece brought to you by Twin Peaks in
Tuckwilla open every Sunday morning just in time for kickoff.
Speaker 4 (00:20):
He was like a pinball hanging off buddy. He's a
twenty three yard catch.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
It run catch every game, every bite and every sip
only at Twin Peaks Tuck Willa.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
Hit the touchdown, hit the touchdown, hit squabb by curse
Now with Kevin, Here's Softy. Rain is falling, wind is
pulling the paul put down the kickers up my thing.
Speaker 5 (00:42):
It's way through the uprights, through the rain and shoot
Haado rediction in Washing Demmon. The Peers have won it
twenty five touch twenty four on a thirty eight yard
walk off field goal.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
Why kitt called off the pluck the squad today?
Speaker 6 (01:03):
You know I need to know first of all.
Speaker 7 (01:05):
Kevin Harlan with us courtesy of our friends at Twin Peaks,
Tuck will at great spot to watch all the baseball games,
by the way, and by the way, as long as
the Mariners are playing all home playoff games, wings are
twenty percent off at Twin Peaks.
Speaker 6 (01:18):
So yeah, get down there, baby.
Speaker 7 (01:20):
And check out the Maritors and get a great deal
on wings. Open early Sunday for kickoffs. But I have
a bad habit, Kevin in this business. When I start
to scream and yell, I lose my voice and I
lose it fast. How do you avoid how do you
avoid doing that on calls like that?
Speaker 3 (01:37):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (01:37):
I you don't know. You get a lot of air
in your lungs, you push it out. You kind of
you're you're animated. I think you met John Madden told
me one time when I was at Fox. He said,
he said, you know, when I began my TV career,
they said, John, you sound different than you look down
(01:58):
the sideline on the sideline and you were always moving
your arms and you were so animated. But in the
booth during our broadcast at CBS, you just kind of
stand there. You're sitting down, he said you. They said
you need to use your arms and be like you
were on the sideline. And he told me, and I
was with a couple other broadcasters that when I did that,
(02:20):
it just it changed the whole trajectory of my career
and I took off and kind of became what I
became because I used my arms, I used my hands,
I used my body when.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
I put that kind of stuff into it.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
So I'm kind of the same way I think a
lot of broadcasters are, and that has kind of helped me.
But I hear these back and some things I like,
some things I don't.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
I mean, I listen.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
It's always a work in progress with the broadcast. But
that was a that was a big moment for the Bears.
They did get redemption. Remember the last time they faced
him was that Hail Mary passed fifty two yards from
Jayde and Daniel last year to beat the Bears when
they had it almost looked an assured win. So they
got back. Now they're even one one with those two
(03:08):
top picks in last year's draft.
Speaker 6 (03:10):
Yeah, no doubt. And Kevin Harlan's with us.
Speaker 7 (03:12):
I'm gonna try that, by the way, start thrusting my
chest in the air and Kevin har see now I'm
losing my voice again for God's sakes.
Speaker 6 (03:22):
But oh my goodness, the Bears, I think a.
Speaker 7 (03:25):
Lot of us thought that the Bears were due to
kind of make a run this year. I like their
schedule a lot. You know, Ben Johnson's got an attitude,
He's cocky, he doesn't give a damn what you think
about him or his way of going about doing things.
Is it possible that maybe this Bears team is about
to turn a corner?
Speaker 1 (03:43):
Well, I love these new coaches that are in the league.
You've got one in Seattle, Ben Johnson clearly won in Chicago.
Dan Campbell kind of began this a couple of years ago,
and what he's doing in Detroit. You're seeing this throughout
the league. You can even dip into the the floors
and the mcveigh's and and that group. I think Demico
(04:04):
Ryans has a bit of that down in Houston. These
you know Stike in in Indianapolis clearly, you know McDaniels
maybe a little bit before in Miami. That that thing
is is head and south pretty quick. My point is
is that, uh, this league always good coaches are always
(04:24):
attracted to the NFL, and I think what's gonna happen
here and we need to keep track of this over
the next three to five years. We need to see,
and Chip Kelly's already done it. We need to see
how many of these college coaches get fed up with
n I L and and the inequity and what these
(04:44):
rosters are getting paid in college ball. Until they get
that fixed, we're gonna see, I think, in exodus of
good young coaches from college to pro and they're gonna
stay here. They're not gonna They're not gonna wait and
and I just think that we're kind of in that.
The the defensive coordinator with Green Bay was the head
coach at Boston College. He left because he got tired
(05:05):
of trying to go out and meet with donors all
the time and raise money for NIL.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
So they could pay these kids.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
It's exhausting and it's not coaching, it's fundraising, right, And
I think a lot of these coaches are sick of it.
And by the way, if you look at what's happening
in college basketball over the last five years, look at
all the great coaches that are gone, Roy Williams and
Mike Krzyzewski, and the coach at Villanova and the coach
at Virginia and the coach at Tennessee, and we can
(05:34):
go on and on and on they don't want to
be fundraisers, they want to be coaches and anyway, so
we're seeing great coaching at the pro level because they're
tired of doing it at the college level. There are
always going to be some that remain, but they must
have a great staff of fundraisers and they don't have
to get involved. But a lot of schools don't have that,
and they got.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
To do it.
Speaker 6 (05:54):
Yeah, no, dog.
Speaker 7 (05:55):
Kevin Harlan's with us again courtesy at Twin Peaks talk
Willa and Kevin. You kind of mentioned two with that
are just in passing, and you know, he came out
after their latest loss and it kind of threw everybody
under the bus, you know, for not being accountable late
to this, not showing up to that. And then he
came out today and he apologized for all those comments.
But I don't know, man, We're seeing a lot of
quarterbacks in the NFL that were just in the wrong system.
(06:17):
Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold up until last year, maybe even
Gino Smith Baker Mayfield. Is it possible that with a
new coach too at Tunguovalloa also might prove to be
in the wrong system.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
I've said and I think a lot of people agree
organizations fail young quarterbacks before quarterbacks fail organizations. I think
I think the Giants failed Jones. I think Cleveland and
Carolina failed Baker Mayfield. I don't know where. I really
(06:50):
thought this marriage in Miami was going to work out.
After Flores was let go and they brought in McDaniels,
I thought, Okay, this is a guy that will really resonate.
And for the first three years they did. They were good,
they were ascending. They were one of the teams that
you did not want to play.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
But but think that.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
They've had bad roster decisions and that that's not necessarily
on the coach. I think it's on the front office
and the personnel people. They're not they're not drafting well,
they're not getting the right players down there.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
It's not working.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
And and I think that that they're failing to up
and with the offensive line and and right on down
the line. So I I you know, Dave, it is
a tough business. It's it's difficult. But he probably should
not have as a leader on that team, should not
have said what he said. Yeah, he could have put
(07:46):
it in more vague terms to get the point across
as opposed to being so specific in what he said
after the game the other day.
Speaker 7 (07:53):
How about Mike Tomlin being pissed off and calling out
was it Andrew Berry the Browns GM for trail aiding
Joe Flacco to a division rival who they now have
to play this weekend. I mean, I'm not sure I've
ever seen a guy trade a quarterback to a division
rival and then the coach of the team that that
guy's playing the next week call out the GM for
(08:15):
doing it.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
Well, he rarely does this. If he has ever done it,
I can't remember, But I did hear something in a
press box this past weekend that when the Flaco deal
was made, he asked reporters specifically after the game, asked
me this question about Flaco getting traded to a division team.
(08:40):
He asked the reporters, make sure you mentioned this in
our postgame press conference, because he wanted to address it.
He purposefully that was that was premeditated. He wanted to
do it, and he did so. And I don't think
a lot of people know that. So that scout told
me that that he heard it from a reliable source
(09:02):
in the Pittsburgh press corps. So he felt strongly about it.
I can't disagree with him. I think it's probably typical
of what Cleveland is going through right now. They've got
Dave forty six million dollars right now? Is forty six? Oh,
it's forty million or more. I'll put it this way.
(09:23):
It's forty million dollars or more this year going to
eight different quarterbacks and only two are on the roster.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
Now, think of that. They've got forty million dollars going
to eight different quarterbacks, including Flacco, but only two are
on the roster. Wow.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
For the Browns, that's that's what kind of organization they've
got right now.
Speaker 6 (09:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (09:46):
Well, Kevin Harlan's with us for a few more minutes.
I don't know if we'll be able to sneak in.
Where will Kevin be for TV on Sundays?
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Yeah, no one cares. I don't care. You don't care.
Speaker 6 (09:55):
No, use it to your ears.
Speaker 7 (09:57):
I know you're doing the first Monday night game Buccaneers
Lions on Monday, and you know Tampa came here a
couple of weeks ago and beat the Seahawks in a
in a shootout. I mean, after what the Giants did
to Philadelphia Thursday night, can we now officially say that
Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the front
runner for the NFC Championship.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
No, I wouldn't say that, but I would say through
a third of the season, Baker Mayfield is the MVP
of the NFL. Crazy and Sam and Sam Darnold is
not far behind, right, and Daniel Jones is not far behind.
Speaker 6 (10:31):
And imagine saying that three years ago, by the way, I.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Know, right, can you imagine that they go, oh my god,
you and Kevin have been going a twin peaks and
having a couple of a couple of hits here before
the game. Uh yeah, No, No, I don't mean hits.
I mean I mean a shot. I didn't mean hit.
So I just wiped that away.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Anyway, my boy.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
My point is, My point is it just shows you
how this league can turn and and how just and
and Baker Mayfield spent five games with the Rams. It
turned his career around. He found the love of the game.
Same with Sam Darnold. And he went to San Francisco
for the year and backed up party. He discovered the
love of the game and and and it's like he
(11:19):
almost went to rehab. He got he got right, he
got corrected and and and that's what these quarterback Daniel
Jones went to Minnesota was under Kevin O'Connell up there,
he spent a handful of weeks up in with the Vikings.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
He got right.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
That's that's that just goes to show you what this
league is. But the Buccaneers are clear that now they're
not winning by much, and they're winning late, and that's
a tough way to live. You're looking you're you're looking
over the precipice and boy, you're looking at a big
fall down.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
But they're they're finding ways to win. And there's something
very special about that that all winning teams do.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Last year, that was the Chiefs.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
They won all they won like a consecutive one score
games and they went on to the Super Bowl. So
can I disagree with what you just said about the Buccaneers. No,
they could. They could make it. But we're gonna find
out a lot Monday night in Detroit, which is one
of the great early games of this year, or mid
season games the Lions and the Buccaneers.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
That will be a beauty.
Speaker 6 (12:19):
You know what I'm gonna do it? Where will Kevin
be for TV? On Sunday.
Speaker 7 (12:23):
Promo, Nance have Colts Chargers, and I'm gonna predict that
you're doing Raiders Chiefs in Kansas City, am I right?
Speaker 1 (12:31):
No, no, no, you rascal. We're gonna be doing the
Giants and Broncos in Denver.
Speaker 6 (12:42):
Got it? Got it? And then Monday night you got
the first game, right Buccaneers Lions? Correct?
Speaker 3 (12:47):
Yeah, we follow ABC.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
I think e spm's got your game up there, right,
But your game is a good gamey Texans Hawks, is.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
A good game.
Speaker 6 (12:55):
Kevin, you're the man, great stuff.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Oh, you're the man. How can I be the man
when you're.
Speaker 7 (12:59):
The man, the man for the bench check?
Speaker 6 (13:06):
All right, we've officially lost it.
Speaker 7 (13:08):
Time for us to go to bed, Time for us
to go, Kevin, you're the man.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
That's what happens when you go to Twin Peaks before
we start doing this this gig.
Speaker 7 (13:15):
Yeah, I love it, great stuff, buddy. All right, we'll
talk in a week. Man, Thank you pal. No Mariners,
I love it.
Speaker 6 (13:22):
I love it.
Speaker 7 (13:23):
