The voice of the NFL.

On CBS, the voice of the NFL on Westwood One,

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Our buddy, our friend, our leader, Kevin Harvey.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
We are friends. We are friends, aren't we We are?
We are we are truly friends.
Speaker 5 (01:31):
Yeah, well we're We're such good friends that every time
you come to town, you make it a weekend where
your friend is out of town. So I hope you
enjoy Seattle this weekend, pal, because I'll be in I'll
be in Madison, Wisconsin.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
I've never been in.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
No, you've never been there. Oh, you're gonna love it.
It is. It is a picturesque campus. They got two
gigantic lakes in the area that are apart incorporated in
the university. The stadium. They're not they're not having much
of a season, but it is a great scene. You're
going to a great college town.
Speaker 5 (02:05):
Well, listen, the lakes are great. It's gonna be like
thirty five degrees. So unless you want your buddy to
get hypothermia, I'll probably skip the lakes. Have you ever
heard of a bar? You ever heard of a bar
called the Scannie Bar. Does that ring a bell with
you at all? Is that a popular place out there?
Speaker 2 (02:23):
No, I'm sure it's great. You know, I didn't go
to school there. Yeah, but our son in law did.
He played basketball there actually, and he loved it. And no,
I I you can't go wrong at any of those places. Plus,
tell him who you are when you walk in there. Hey,
(02:44):
A j R. Is in the house.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Yeah, tell him.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
Tell me you get the service that you not only
demand but deserved.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Well that we'll see what happened.
Speaker 5 (02:55):
That's where we'll be on Friday night at the Scannie Bar.
So everybody heading out there to Wisconsin join us. Maybe
I'll drop your name and see if it gets me
a discount on you know, some.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
French dropping career.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
But that's okay, don't worry about that or something. Don't
use my name, just use your own, yeah, own name.
Speaker 5 (03:12):
Well, we played that highlight there coming in of Monday night.
I mean a couple things. First of all, just total
disaster for Dallas on Monday. And then Kevin, this is
the second straight week man that the Seahawks get to
play a team on a short rest because they got
the Monday night game. We had the Commanders a week
ago coming off their Monday game, and now Arizona on
(03:32):
Sunday coming off their Monday game. So we're kind of
in a unique place right now where you're doing the
Seahawks Arizona game for TV on Sunday, So no need
to ask and do that segment later. But you just
saw the Cardinals on Monday night and you'll see him
again in Seattle on Sunday. And there's a lot of
folks that think that maybe Arizona's better off without Kyler
(03:54):
Murray and going to Brissett.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
What do you think?
Speaker 2 (03:58):
I agree. Brissette is thirty two, he has been a
part of multiple offenses. He has matured wonderfully in that position.
You never know when it's gonna hit, right. We didn't
know that when Gino Smith went up there after a
couple stops, that he would become the quarterback that he
would become. We didn't know that Rich Jannon would leave
(04:19):
Kansas City, go to the Raiders and in his mid thirties,
you know, become an MVP of the league and go
to the Super Bowl. It just took him a while.
And I think for Prisset, you know, he's saying, you know,
I've been around. I'm probably on the clock. I'm thirty two,
not been able to stick. I've a proven commodity. People
(04:41):
know they can trust me. But now he's in a
situation where they are, you know, I think, welcoming to
someone who was kind of unexpected. They were banking on
literally and figuratively. I'm Kyler Murray and he has gotten
the big contract. He has not produced. He has been
(05:01):
reports off the off the grid kind of that. He's
you know, maybe not the most diligent in getting ready
for games, in preparation and tape study. You've heard all
those things, right, So I don't know. I I I
just think I think Brissette has gone in there and
become a like a breath of fresh ares. He is
a consonate pro, an incredible locker room presence, and h
(05:27):
the results have been I think very positive, uh with
the with the greatest indication what happened Monday down in Dallas.
Now they've lost five games. They're desperate, they know that,
Uh they're there. Their playoffs have begun. I mean they
have no room for era, especially in that division where
(05:51):
you've got all those teams that have you know, you
and the Rams and San Francisco have have have got
wins that right now put their going to Cardinals not
just at the bottom of the division, but in real
dire straits. And they they need to, you know, treat
every game like if we don't win, our postseason chances
(06:13):
are going to be, you know, slimmed to none. And
so they're gonna come in motivated. They're playing well. They've
been injured like so many teams, but they they're they're
getting guys back, and they got a couple defensive guys
back last week in Dallas, and and I think they're
gonna give the Hawks all they can handle.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (06:32):
Well, and then just going to Dallas for a second
on Monday night, I was shocked, I guess, for lack
of a better word, by what happened to them on Monday.
I thought they'd win the game, and they just look
terrible on both sides of the ball. And then Jerry
Jones goes out and gets Quinn Williams from the Jets
to help out the defense. I mean, look, I don't
know how I expect you to answer this question, Kevin,
(06:53):
So I'll just ask you anyway, is Jerry delusional? Like
does he think that he's actually got a team that
is a piece. He's art two away from winning the
NFC East and making the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
I think he does. I think. I'm not going to
use the word delusion all I didn't say he was.
I think I said he does. And my my thing
is he does. Think he's got a chance. Yes, And
you know, he said something very poignant in the wake
of these two deals gotting Logan Wilson, who's a tackling
machine from the Bengals, and a solid defensive player in
(07:26):
Quinn Williams, who is a proven commodity and desperately wanted
out of New York. But Jones said, and I just
heard this about twenty minutes ago. He said, I'm eighty two.
He said, I make moves for the organization now that
are going to help us. Now. I can't. I can't
look four or five years down the road because I
(07:47):
don't know what, you know, kind of condition I'm going
to be in. And I think a lot of people
that hit that mark eighty five, eighty seventy five, they
look at life differently. And he owns that team. He's
built team, he's he's made that the richest franchise in
the NFL, he can do whatever he wants. My only
my only thing about the Cowboys has always been this,
(08:10):
I get Jerry Jones as a great businessman. I get
that Jerry Jones uh has has made that organization worth
multiple billions of dollars when he bought it for far
less than that. And and and his success in the
business world is you know, beyond question. But when they
(08:32):
were good before and won those three Super Bowls in
four years, he had Jimmy Johnson and he and he
had text like he had some real football people in
that organization that were there, and he has over the years.
And it's his right to do it. It's his team,
(08:53):
unlike the Seahawks who rely on John Snyder, who's been
a wizard. You know, they've relied on him making a
lot of these football calls. And I just, I just
it's it's proven in this league that you cannot do
what he's doing and win. And they've not won, they'd
(09:14):
not won, and it's proving out you can't be you know,
the businessman buy it. And and you know, when that
day comes and we got a great business guy who's
also a great football guy, he'll be one of one
but right now we don't have that. And the good
owners hire football people. They put him in a place
to succeed. They stop by their office every day and
(09:35):
they say what can I do? How can I help?
What do you need? And he's not been like that.
He's been the general manager. It's his team. He can
do it, but the results show that it's not working well.
Speaker 5 (09:47):
Kevin Harlan's with us. This segment obviously is working. I
think you may feel different. Every Wednesday at five o'clock
courtesy at Twin Peaks, Tuck Will look seeks.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Yeah, we love Twin. We love Twin and then Tuck Will.
We love him. They're great partners. And I'll be there
Friday night. I'll be there Saturday. I'm gonna go in
there for brunch. Alright, Sunday morning. All right, I'm gonna
go see my buddies over there and see how you doing. Yeah,
thanks responsoring the show, Thanks for putting up with Softy,
and I think you know I'm gonna enjoy every minute
(10:18):
I spent there. Well, let me know, like they're like
they're like family.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
They are.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Hear that they're like family, they really are.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Let me know how it goes all Brad that you're
on the way.
Speaker 5 (10:28):
But you know, in the in the open for the show,
we have that Germaine curse touchdown against the Packers and
the NFC championship from twenty fourteen, and here we are
eleven years later. And I don't know, man, there's a
lot of hype around the country starting to build for
the Seahawk team to go to Washington just destroy the Commanders.
On Sunday night, Sam Darnold perfect sixteen for sixteen, four
(10:51):
touchdowns in the first half. Everyone's buying the Hawks now, man.
I saw one Power poll had him number one in
the NFL. Then they went out and got Rashid Shaheed
from the Saints yesterday at the deadline.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Are you buying what's happening here in Seattle?
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Man?
Speaker 3 (11:09):
I am.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
I believe that they have answered their quarterback situation resoundingly.
They've got enough of a run game to support. They've
got maybe the best receiver in Pro football and he's young.
They've bolstered their line, they got playmakers on defense. I
(11:30):
just think what John has done has been just phenomenal.
And and you know how I feel about him being
a Green Bay guy. So and I don't pretend to
know him. I know we we've met, but I have
such respect with how they conduct their football operation and
(11:52):
it really has been impressive. Uh. First, let's go back
a couple of years, nailing the coach, trying trying to
fill an I con, you know, an iconic guy and
brand like Pete Carroll, and you bring in the coach
you brought in and his road record is stunning. Do
not use that? Would you? Would you use that word stunning?
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (12:15):
I would done on the road.
Speaker 5 (12:16):
I don't think anybody expected eleven and one. So yes,
I am stunned. I'm stunned by that.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
I know you should be twin peaks altually is stunning.
And I'm and and I'm telling you right now, why
why not the Seahawks they've you know, and here's the thing.
You know, fool me one, shame on you, fool me twice,
you know, shame on me. So so like it's the
darnold thing played out last year in Minnesota, and that
(12:45):
was legit. Clearly it was legit. He's better this year
than he was last year, with a new offense, the
new cast around him, and and he and the team
believes in him. That scene after the game on that
win the other night. That was riceless. Yeah, so I
feel great for him. He took a lot of abuse
getting out of SC bounced around a little bit, resurrected
(13:08):
his career. We found the love of the game, made
the right step, and San Francisco continued the education with
the Vikings and put together that fourteen win season last year.
What is his record? Is he something like, I'm not
counting the playoff game? His starting record? Is he like
twenty one and five or something in the last two years?
Speaker 5 (13:30):
Yeah, fourteen and three and now six and two, So
he's twenty and five.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Can you believe that? Like that is if you said
that record and like, there's no way anybody will guess
it was Sam Darnold, but it is and you're seeing
it first hand up there.
Speaker 5 (13:48):
What did you make of the Colts giving up two
first rounders for Sauce Gardner?
Speaker 2 (13:53):
They're in now they have a quarterback who's gonna probably
triple his fourteen million this year, uh in his new
deal because he's up after this season, And why wouldn't
they They've may have found their quarterback even though they
got Richardson, you know, a high pick, you know, on
the bench injured now, but on the bench they've they've
(14:17):
they've built for this moment. The roster has always been good,
but they had really struggle with that cornerback. And we
know that a shutdown corner changes the field for the
offense because now it takes a quarter of the field away.
It gives your defensive line more time to rush because
you've covered well, tilts the offense and makes them going
(14:40):
directions they don't want to. So those positions are amongst
the most coveted parsons. Sauce, your quarterback, your left tackle.
I mean, those are those are the money positions and
he's already getting paid Gardner is So I just think
the so you know what, we've got the team, look
(15:03):
at our record best in the AFC. Were deficient in
one area and they they handled it and they got
the guy they wanted who's better, probably impressed coverage than
anything else, and they'll they'll make that defense work around
what his strengths are. I love the deel they're all
in because you know, next year they're not going to
(15:24):
be able to afford a lot of people and they're
going to have to just contend with with you know,
an expensive price at that quarterback, So now is the
time to do it. They did it, and I applaud them.
Speaker 5 (15:35):
Well, Kevin Harlan's with us for a few more minutes
courtesy a twin peaks Tuck Willa.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
He's calling the Seahawks and Cardinals for TV on Sunday.
At what point?
Speaker 5 (15:44):
And I kind of get the sense, and I don't
know what your sense is that a lot of people
around the country are kind of waiting for the Patriots
to kind of fall apart that there's no way this
is legit. There's no way Drake May's doing this. They've
won six in a row, they're seven and two. Are
we ready to kind of call this thing legit or
do you still need to see a little more out
of them?
Speaker 2 (16:03):
Well? I think I think they they were so wayward
a coach that they got the guy that that UH
is invested in the organization and the organization believes in him.
I don't think that Girodo that was ever the case.
And we know that the wake of the Belichick ship
pulling out a port and and and what that was like.
And but I think they felt like they had some
(16:24):
pretty good people. They had they had brought in and
then they hit it on the quarterback. Right, I'm telling
you this right now, I'm gonn. I'm gonna give you
a a little lesson in football, one on one. If
you if you don't have the quarterback, you're always going
to be treading water.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
Wow, hang on, hang on just a second.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
Take it to the bank.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
Can you repeat that please? For those that missed it, No.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
I'll let them guess, and they have to rewind the
paper go back. Well, I mean right, I mean, listen, Dave, Dave,
if you've got the quarterback, it takes seventy five percent
of what you've got to do. Your concerns off the table.
They're that important. Look what's going on in Arizona. Yeah,
with with they got confidence at cornerback, and and and
(17:17):
and look what Versett is doing. Look at look at Seattle,
Look at Indianapolis. You know, look at what what we
thought Love would. Look at what may be going on
in Chicago, but has been going on in Detroit with Golf.
I mean, if you've got the quarterback, look at Tampa
with Baker. I mean, like like it's it's it's pretty clear.
(17:40):
You know, they didn't have it with Russ and Denver,
they drafted Bone Hicks. He has given him good to
very good quarterback play and the team is amongst the
best in the AFC. You need the quarterback and there's
no price that is too steep, and you've got to
(18:01):
find him because it makes Yeah, it gives your team
a chance. And that's what the teams I just mentioned
can do and are doing, and that's why the Jets
are floundering and the Giants are have so much. The
New York Giants have got so much hope with this
kid they got and he has answered the bell. Now
(18:24):
they got to build around him because they don't have
a lot around him. But he I think is legit
and he could be the NFC offensive rookie of the year.
He's been that good. And I applaud them for Dabll
literally trading up and getting him late in the first round.
It's changed all the It's changed everything about the way
(18:47):
people look at the Giants and where they're going from
this season on.
Speaker 5 (18:50):
Yeah, well look I know where late. We got like
thirty seconds left, and I totally agree with you. Well,
it's just it's the most important position in sports by far.
You know, Dick and I were kind of goofing around
just for giggles. A week ago, We're like, hey, would
you would you would you trade Sam Darnold for four
first round picks, which you can't do any Kevin.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
I said no, I said I wouldn't do it.
Speaker 5 (19:10):
I said, look, I've already got the most important piece
that you need to build a team. And even more
so after Sunday night, I don't think I would do it.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
I'd say no, No, I would know. I know I
would not do it. Absolutely not. Ah that they know
he is. He's proven, he's the guy. He's proven it.
This is not a mirage, right, he is the guy.
Twenty and five, twenty and five.
Speaker 5 (19:34):
That's right, that's right, Kevin, You're the man. Great stuff.
Enjoy Seattle. Sorry, we're gonna miss you again this weekend.
We will have you want to go by.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
I was going down to the I was going to
Twin Peaks, and I told Brad, I'm bringing Softy in here.
Everything is on me and and and and now it's it's.
Speaker 5 (19:53):
For the for the first time ever, you were going
to actually open your wallet and I'm not going to
be here to see it. Eagles pack Monday night from
Green Bay as well. We'll have that game on KJR.
All right, enjoy Seattle this weekend and we'll talk in
a week man.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Appreciate it, Bud, have a great trip to Wisconsin, partner, take.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Care all right, Man, Kevin Harlan with us on the show.
Speaker 5 (20:13):
We're gonna break a lot more to get to, including
we gotta get Larry Stone's take on Game seven, don't we.
I mean, we keep telling Larry, hey, we're done, we'll
talk to you next year, and then all this cool
stuff keeps happening and we keep getting him back on
the year. So all courtesy of the RAM at six
pm tonight on ninety three to three KJRFM.
