Speaker 2 (00:23):
All right, here we go on a busy Wednesday afternoon
right here on ninety three to three KJRFM. Let's make
this quick because our next guest is busy getting prepping
for a West Virginia Thanksgiving tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Baby.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Here he is from the NFL and NBC Pro Football
Talk dot Com. Our friend Michael Florio, joining us on
the radio program What's Up, but Hoole?
Speaker 3 (00:43):
How are you?
Speaker 4 (00:43):
Man?
Speaker 3 (00:44):
I'm going fine.
Speaker 5 (00:45):
And before we all put our hands inside of the
turkey's butthole, let me just be clear. There is no
difference between the West Virginia Thanksgiving and the non West
Virginia Thanksgiving.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
There will be no squirrel wow.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
There will be no varmints.
Speaker 6 (00:58):
We will eat usual food and use the indoor plumbing, okay,
and have our shoes on and gather around and watch
three good football games with.
Speaker 5 (01:10):
My main goal not passing out during the Cowboy game.
Every year I say I'm not going to pass out
during the Cowboy game, and every year I failed.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
Do you at least use the you bring the good
whiskey out though?
Speaker 7 (01:22):
For Thanksgiving?
Speaker 3 (01:25):
Well, I only drink good whiskey. I mean, okay, so
you know.
Speaker 5 (01:31):
I'm not drinking rot gut ook at the other days
of the year. It's one of the perks having a
good job.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Let's let's move on from all the roadkill talk and
let's get to some actual football. Let's start with what's
going to happen this Sunday between Sam donald uh and Minnesota.
Can we now look back and say the Vikings made
a mistake not bringing back either one of Sam Darnold
or Daniel Jones.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Well, that's the easy answer.
Speaker 5 (01:57):
I think the bigger picture and I wrote about this
today and I've been talking about it this week on PFT,
and I wish that I had thought of it back
in March. The one thing that I had heard back
in March, as Darnold was approaching free agency, Daniel Jones
is approaching free agency.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
There's noise that Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
Wants to come play for the Vikings, and the Vikings say, no, no, no,
we have to see what we have in JJ McCarthy,
and I understand that, but I was also getting the
vibe from people who were dealing with the Vikings at
the time that nobody really knew who was making the decision.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
And my biggest criticism of Vikings now, look, JJ McCarthy
doesn't look the part.
Speaker 5 (02:32):
The numbers support it. I've watched fifty years of football.
You can just tell when a quarterback has it and
when a quarterback doesn't. And his biggest problem is I
think he's trying too hard and he's thinking too much
because he feels compelled.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
To justify the decision the Vikings made.
Speaker 5 (02:48):
I think the Vikings aired in not looking at all
of the circumstances as they existed after the twenty twenty
four season and recognizing what it would mean to McCarthy
to say, we could have had the guy who went
fourteen and three last year, We could have kept Daniel Jones, who, frankly,
and there was noise to this effect during the postseason.
(03:09):
They were thinking about putting Jones on the field instead
of Darnald during the postseason, especially after that Week eighteen
debacle in Detroit where they could have had the one
seed but all of a sudden, Sam Darnold was throwing,
you know, volleyballs into the front row, and then they
say no to Rogers. I just think they failed to
understand the pressure they were putting on JJ McCarthy. And
(03:30):
I think that that and also if someone pointed out
to me today after I wrote about the failure to
understand how much pressure they were putting on McCarthy's there
was a complete failure to reduce expectations. The idea was, Hey,
we've got this Super Bowl ready team and all we
got to do is plug in one of these young
quarterbacks and you know, if he plays like Jaydon Daniels
or Caleb Williams to a certain extent.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Bow knicks, we're fine. Everything will be fine.
Speaker 5 (03:52):
And I think you put it all together, and I
just wonder within the Vikings organization, who is the person
who is responsible for coming up up with short and
long term strategies because that person failed, and maybe there's
no one and maybe the decision shows that there's no
one who's kind of guiding the ship and saying, hey,
wait a minute, we're creating a huge problem here by
(04:13):
putting way too much pressure, too high of expectations on
this kid who missed all of his rookie season. And
that's part of the pressure he's feeling too. He didn't
play it all last year. He's got to prove them right,
he's got to prove that he's good.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
He got to carry this burden.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
And so, in hindsight, considering all of that, they should
have come up with a different plan.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
And if JJ McCarthy didn't like it, so what he's
going to contract for three more years?
Speaker 5 (04:33):
You explain it to him and say, look, this is
how it can go if we let all these guys
go and we give you the ball, and it can
end up being bad for everyone, including you.
Speaker 7 (04:42):
So is JJ just going to be handed the job
next year, or is there a situation where maybe they
you know, they sign a mac jones and bring him
in as competition or potentially be the starter.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
There, but they wouldn't be able to sign him. That's
the trade trade for him.
Speaker 5 (04:56):
Yeah, that was one of the wise things the forty
nine ers did. They learned with Sam Darnold. Send these
guys to one year contracts signed of the two year contracts,
so you can control their rights after that first season
if there's a.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Market out there. There's been some stuff.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
Perpolating in the circles that I traffic in regarding Max
Jones to the Vikings possibly next year, and there aren't
a ton of options next year. There aren't a bunch
of free agents that teams will be competing to try
to get.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
It's going to be one of these guys I think.
Speaker 5 (05:25):
Under contract, who is a backup but has some value,
you know, even a Davis Mills who has played surprisingly
well for the Texans in recent weeks. But I think
the Vikings need to explore all options and they need
to at a minimum bring in somebody who will push
JJ McCarthy as a legitimate competition, not some fake phony beloney.
(05:48):
You know what people thought that Daniel Jones thing was
with Anthony Richardson. No, that was a real competition, and
the Colts were willing to admit their mistake, because the
worst thing you can do in the surest sign of
dysfunctional organization.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
When you make a mistake, admit it.
Speaker 5 (06:00):
But he had double down and If the Viking is
double down next year, then I'm already thinking they are
the highest functioning dysfunctional team in the.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
NFL right now.
Speaker 5 (06:09):
If they double down on McCarthy, they are flat out
big d dysfunctional.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Yeah, speaking of dysfunctional, how about our guy Pete Carroll
in Vegas with the Raiders. Do you know Smith flipping
off the Raider fans walking off the field.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
They're terrible, They're going nowhere?
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Are we starting to believe, Mike that there is a
sliver of a chance that Pete Carroll might be one
and done in Vegas?
Speaker 3 (06:32):
And first of all, Gino's my guy. He was great
at West Virginia.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
The video I've seen, it's not clear that it was
a Raiders fan or a Browns fan, and I'm not
condoning it. He's gonna get fined for it. And it
was funny how he kind of low key.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Tried to do it. But it may have been a
Browns fan that was out of line.
Speaker 5 (06:48):
We saw what he did when he came back to
Seattle and they were riding him in the preseason.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
He gave a full.
Speaker 5 (06:52):
Blown, no hesitation, double barrel middle fingers then, but with Pete,
this chip Kelly thing. I thought that they couldn't coexist year.
The fact that Pete fired Chip Kelly with games left
in a lot of season. This isn't the Ravens in
twenty twelve when Cam Cameron got fired and they made
Jim Caldwell the offensive coordinator and that led a few
that led all the way to a Super Bowl win.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
I don't know if you guys remember that that.
Speaker 5 (07:14):
Was thirteen years ago. That turned around the offense for
the Ravens that year and delivered the only Super Bowl
League once since the year two thousand. I think this
is just, hey, somebody had to go. This thing's not working.
Chip Kelly's not running the offense the way that Pete
Carroll wants it.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
And I suspect the decision was.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
Made after last Monday night when they had like three
or four rushing attempts in the first half, threw the
ball way too much, even though Pete Carroll had made
it clear they want to run the ball, but you
can't fire Chip Kelly on Tuesday. With the game on Sunday,
and the fact that it happened so quickly after the
game on Sunday, it just tells me that was when
the last straw hit the Campmel's back, and I just
(07:52):
wonder what happens with Pete Carroll after this season. If
I'm Pete, I may think I've had enough. I got
this Tom Brady guy blowing up my phone, trying to
tell me how to do my job. Life's too short
to deal with him. And I don't know that that's true,
but I suspect that Tom Brady, who is basically the
owner's right hand man and the primary voice that influences
Mark Davis. I suspect Brady is trying to exert himself.
(08:15):
And if he's not there with his sleeves rolled up, working,
I think it quickly creates resentment among the people who
are working. It wouldn't surprise me if, just all things considered,
Pete says, I'm out of here, And it wouldn't surprise
me if Tom Brady whispers and Mark Davis You've got
to fire Pete Carroll.
Speaker 7 (08:30):
Wow, Mike, there are eleven teams right now that are
shorter than fifteen to one odds to win the Super Bowl,
and we're at Thanksgiving. I can't remember the last time
that has happened.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Is this?
Speaker 7 (08:42):
Is this a shift in the NFL? That we're going
to see for a while, or is this just kind
of a one year aberration?
Speaker 3 (08:47):
You know, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
We thought it was going to be Chiefs and Eagles,
best two teams ruling the roost.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
Again, and it still could be them.
Speaker 5 (08:55):
It would be the most unlikely circuitous route for those
two teams to get there, especially the Chiefs, who have
a lot of work to do.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
To even make the playoffs. But it does feel wide open.
Speaker 5 (09:05):
And when I say that, people say, well, wait a minute,
the Rams are clearly the best team right now. But
you know what the rams worst nightmare I think is
having both the Seahawks and the forty nine Ers in
the playoffs and having one or both of those teams
roll into Sofi Stadium in the postseason. We've seen that
dynamic before. And when you have a team who has
(09:25):
the one seed and another team from their division makes
it in oh Man, they love nothing more than to
end your magical run. And they're not intimidated by you.
They know the locker room, they know the field. They
are not going to be wide eyed all we're supposed
to lose.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
They are going to relish the opportunity to beat you.
Speaker 5 (09:42):
And I think above all else the forty nine Ers
if they get a shot at the Rams. First of all,
though to beat them in so far, And secondly, you
think they want the Rams playing in the super Bowl
at their stadium. Hell no, So I think the Rams
would be my pick right now to win it. But
I also think Seahawks that Ram or forty nine Ers
at Rams could be deadly to the rams chances of
(10:04):
getting there.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
Well, that Thursday night game is going to be huge.
You've been to Levi Stadium.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
I know you ever been in the men's room in
the press box by the way, at Levice, I've.
Speaker 5 (10:12):
Never been in the press box. Wait, I wasn't the
press box that I haven't been to the men's room.
I didn't stay for Super Bowl fifty because we were
launching PFT live on NBCSM the next morning, so I
came home.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
That's the only super Bowl other than the COVID one
that I haven't been to.
Speaker 5 (10:25):
But but I did go up to the press box
and hang out with our guy Paul Allen. During the
playoff game when the Vikings were kind of giving the
forty nine Ers a run for their money, Jimmy Garoppolo
kept throwing passes to Eric Kendricks. He caught one, dropped
two others, and then the.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
Forty nine ers. That was when they decided, you know what,
let's just not throw the ball.
Speaker 5 (10:41):
Let's just hand off and handoff and handoff. And they
carried that mentality all the way to the Super Bowl
that year. But I didn't make it to the breast
room to finally answer your question.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
No, there's a sign above the urinal in the men's
room that says, don't drink the water. I swear to
God in San Francisco at Levis Stadium, So just in
case you were thinking about sticking ahead in the urinal
with the press box men's room, don't do it.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
Yeah, thank you.
Speaker 5 (11:04):
I appreciate that, guys, and it really comes in handy
and may it saved me from a significant calamity.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
Thank you, Mike, you're the man. Happy Thanksgiving.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
I'll just tak the urinal water at Heinz Field.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
There you go, much better, much cleaner, as a matter
of fact, comes right out straight from the river.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
Mike. Great stuff to you and your family.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Happy Thanksgiving, Enjoy tomorrow and we'll talk in a week.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Man. Mike. Hey, I'm I'm Glad you're done, because I
gotta go check the squirrel trap.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
There you go, get on it, man, go kill your dinner,
all right, Mike Florio with us, we're gonna break factor
fiction brought to you by the Lucky Eagle.
Speaker 4 (11:37):

Speaker 2 (11:39):

help from any of us. Next on ninety three three
