Kirkland so special. And by workingmore the Northwest workwear superstore. Now Mike

(00:26):
Holmgren on Sports Radio ninety three pointthree kJ R FM. All right,
normally on Thursdays when we had HockeyBaby yesterday on the radio show. So
just a few minutes. We'll takewhatever we can get. We'll take whatever
scraps fall off the Holmegren table hereon the radio program. Whatever time he
gives us is an absolute blessing. It's our friend, Mike Holmgren, coach.

(00:47):
How are you? I'm good,Dave? How you doing your voice?
Sounds better? Map for you alittle bit. I gotta be honest
with you, man, I'm thekids like to say your butt hurt.
I'm a little butt hurt today,a little bummed out. You know about
the news regarding Kaitlin the boor Sureleaving Washington going to Alabama. What was
your take on that today, Coach, Yeah, I was disappointed as well.

(01:08):
I mean I didn't get a chanceto actually meet him, and I
wanted to. I told you that, because I think he does you know,
he does a great He did agreat job here and he seems like
I wanted to get to know him. But now I won't get the chance.
So I'm a little bummed out.But it's the world of we live

(01:29):
in now, you know, allthe craziness with the job openings in both
college and pros that, but tobe in a here two years, you
know, I mean when I left, when I left Green Bay to come
to Seattle, you know, I'vebeen there seven years and six years or
seven years, and then I alsomy job changed, you know, I
got the whole kitten kaboodle. Itjust didn't seem like he was here long

(01:52):
enough, that's all. Well, the old saying is you never want to
replace the legend. You want toreplace the guy that replaced the legends.
So is this the right move toreplace the college the greatest college football coach
of all time? Well, youknow what obviously he thought it was the
right move, and there is goingto be that kind of pressure on him.

(02:13):
But I mean, I really believein him. I think he's perfectly
capable of handling this. And theygot they got a great So you know,
it's it's it's but it's it's hard. You know. The other thing
is, I think some schools, you know, the sky's a limit as
far as salaries and things like thatgo. Not every school is in that
in that category, and so ifthat's that's another factor that factors into some

(02:38):
of these moves, it just hasto be well, Mike, what do
you say to Husky fans that arehaving a problem with trust right now?
You know, he took some callsearlier and one guy caught up and said,
look, I don't know if Ican tell my kids to keep doing
this because I just can't promise theywon't get stabbed in the back by somebody
who takes off for a different job. There's a lot of movement in the

(02:59):
en fell, a lot of movementin college football, and the buyouts seemingly
mean nothing. I mean, Kaitlinde boorg Might had a twelve million dollar
buyout which which did not stop Alabamawhatsoever. So for fans who have a
problem with trust right now, whatdo you say to them, Well,
I would I'd say I understand that. I mean, I do understand that.

(03:20):
You know, after the season theyhad and the fans, the Husky
fans, it was just it wassurreal, it was wonderful and now all
of a sudden, this is ahuge letdown. But you know that not
every team can afford those buyouts. Not every team can do this every college,
you know, certain teams can,and people have to know that.
It just it just seemed it happenedtoo quickly. Data you know that he

(03:44):
wasn't here long enough. And youknow, I remember I remember having a
conversation actually with with coaches saying, you know that asked me about what about
this job? Is it time?Dan quint I had the conversation with him,
and I said, you know, because he was being you know,
Cleveland wanted him. And I said, you know, if you really feel

(04:08):
like that's the place, go,but you will get other chances here,
You will get other chances down theroad. I was told that too,
after I had had some chances togo with the forty nine ers, and
I did, and I stayed so, but look, Alabama, it is
one of the top teams in thecountry, has been for a long time.

(04:30):
But to Dick's point, there willbe some pressure now to maintain that
level and that's not always easy.Well, coach, has been such a
crazy week that we've gone six sevenminutes with you and we haven't brought up
the topic of Pete Carroll being firedor let go or whatever you want to
call it as head coach of theSeattle Seahawks. So how surprised are you

(04:53):
about that? And do you thinkit was the right move by Jody Allen?
Well, I was surprised, andbecause as I thought, uh,
you know, I thought he wouldstep away on his own in the next
couple of years. I thought thatwas a possibility because he's coached a long
time, uh and his contract ranyou know, for another at least another

(05:14):
year or two. So the factthat he that had happened right now,
that did surprise me. But youknow, he look at and and the
fact that Jody Allen I know Jodya little bit. I've met her and
when I was being hired and soon, and I just go, I
don't, I didn't it seemed tome like other people were involved. I

(05:35):
don't know that. But behind thescenes, you know, Jody's getting advice
from people, and you know, from a foot preer football decision. You
know, I didn't think that wasgoing to happen. So I was just
I was as surprised as anybody,to be honest. Well, Pete.
Pete has come out and said twothings. Number one, he was indeed
let go, and he said itcame from non football people. I mean

(05:58):
non football people to me is OdieAllen and Bird Cold. I mean,
who else is he talking about?Yeah, no, I mean yeah,
but I think I didn't read that. But if he said that, yeah,
that's that's kind of an admission.I did he he felt that way
or he came across that way.And I don't think you know, the
owner, Joey Allen is the ownerof the team, So when you talk

(06:21):
about non football people, I don'tthink that that's referencing Jody Allen. I
think you know she's the owner. The owner can do whatever. Okay,
but Jody Allen, you know,as a part of a football you know,
fiery football person. I'm not sure. So she is getting advice from
people, that's fair. And Idon't. I have never really agreed with

(06:45):
the people that give her advice.I really don't. So you know,
it's but it is. Listen,it happened. Pete coached for a long
time, bless his heart. Hedid a wonderful job with the Seattle and
he had us. He's a uniqueguy in the coaching circle as far as
long as I was in it,and I've known him forever. Yeah,
you know, he bouncing around andplaying catch and throwing music and all that

(07:09):
kind of stuff. Not many guysdo that. Really, that's his style,
and he made it work in Seattlewell coach both times. Paul Allen
swung for the fences for head coaches. He hit home runs. He had
home runs with you, and hehad home run with Pete Carroll. How
about Jim Harbaugh? That to meis the home run higher for the Seattle
Seahawks right now? And do youthink he's better suited for the NFL?

(07:31):
And would you like that move bySeattle? It would surprise me a lot.
You know. I was over thereyesterday and talked to John just a
little bit and talked to my guysand actually wanted to talk to Pete.
But he's scooed. He was shutorout of the building before I got a
chance to And I think what John'sresponsibility will be now, you know you

(07:57):
have to have he will have tohire a coach. He wants to hire
a coach. I'm sure he doesthat that that it's gonna work. It's
gonna work like it worked with heand Pete. It's gonna work like it
worked with and he was there withRon Wolf and me. Uh. If
you get those type of that typeof connection in an organization, you've got
a chance to do really well.So I would surprise the heck out of

(08:22):
me if you hired Jim. Youknow, I uh, he he's a
he's a really good coach. Butlook at his look at his record.
He's he's there four years at aplace and then all of a sudden something
happened, something blows up, andit's not the record. They went.
He wins games. So is thatwhat you want? You know? So
it would really surprise me, Dick. And if I were he would ask

(08:43):
me if they don't do that?Yeah, yeah, interesting. I really
might like dan Quinn a lot.I like him as a leader. I
think he'd be great for culture withthe Seahawks. I just wish he was
an offensive coordinator and not a defensivecoordinator. Is it time for the Seahawks
to maybe look for a head coachthat comes from that side of the ball,

(09:03):
you know what, And you're asking, You're probably asking the wrong guy
on this. I hope they hirean offensive guy. And having said that,
I really like Dan Quinn. Ithink he's an outstanding coach and he's
going to be a head coach. He's going to get a job this year
from somewhere. That's my feeling. But I hope the Seahawks go the other

(09:26):
way. I think they have tremendoustalent on offense and you know but but
listen, I'll be the first oneto say, I'm I'm not objective about
this because I was an offensive coach. I was going to call the plays.
I was going to handle that, and then I was going to hire
a great defensive coordinator, like aRay like you know, sherm Lewis,
excuse me, like frit Shermer andthose guys, John Marshall, those guys,

(09:50):
they were really good. I knewhim. I trusted them, and
I could hand them that side. And then worry about the other stuff myself.
So that's my whole Now we'll seewhat happens. Yeah, all right
man, great stuff. Enjoy theweekend, and we're back at the Central
on Thursday talking playoffs man, Sowe'll see you then, right, coach,
We got it, Thanks guys, all right, Bud, Mike,

(10:11):
Colmbrin. Okay, the rest ofthe show belongs to you at two ege
six ninety five ninety five or eighthundred eight two nine oh nine five.

on the radio show and take yourphone calls on a reel. Let's face
it, emotional day right for Huskyfootball fans. A lot of people are
angry, They're frustrated, they wantto point fingers, they want to blame.

this? Are you mad at KlinAre you mad at the university? Are
