I know one guy who knows what it's like to
coach in big games, our friend Mike Holmgren joining us
right now on the radio show How are you Man?
Speaker 5 (01:46):
I'm doing good, guys, how's it going? The Mariners. I'm pumped,
you know. And that ticket thing that you've always been
a very generous person. Yeah, well this is really impressive.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
I learned from you, man, I learned from you. You
taught me how to be generous. And I am just
picking up the slack for you now.
Speaker 5 (02:04):
Man.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
But you know, let's talk about that a little bit.
It's a big weekend.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
I mean, obviously you were here in two thousand, two
thousand and one when we had those great epic runs.
And I kind of feel bad because all the buzz
right now, Mike is about the Mariners. I mean, could
that be potentially maybe a good thing for the Seahawks
that maybe they can have a game where maybe the
pressure is off at least from the fan base a
little bit. Or does it matter at all?
Speaker 5 (02:29):
Well, I don't think it matters there, you know, Mike.
Mike has said it very well in the in the
press when he's had an opportunity. It's it's pretty cool though,
you know. I remember Lou Panella and I talking and
in those days, and it was I happy and it's fun.
You know, you root for your team, you root for
your city and so but as far as it affecting
(02:51):
the football, I don't think.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
So you got it.
Speaker 6 (02:53):
Well, the Marriagers are going through Dan Wilson's going through
something that you had to go through in two thousand
and five when you had the one seed. You had
to decide, Okay, how much do I play my starters?
The rest versus rust thing? And I believe in that
last game of Green Bay you played hassle Beck and
Alexander for one half I think if I remember correctly,
So how do you deal with the rest versus rust?
Speaker 5 (03:14):
Well, I think when you get into that situation, you
know you have that week and you're in pretty good shape,
then yeah, you give him a rest, you know, if
I if my memory serves me right, I think Sean,
I think he had some records he was going after,
so I played him a little bit more just for him.
(03:34):
But no, you you'd be smart with it, you know.
I mean, you know you've already won the game, You've
already won what you're gonna win in the playoffs and
things like that, so you know, be smart and just
make sure your team's healthy going in.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
Yeah, that was a green Bay game, right, exact game, Yeah, Matt, Matt,
Matt started, Sean had twenty carries for seventy three yards
and then you pulled everybody in the second half.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
So Dick is right. But let's talk about this Tampa
Bay game, man.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
I mean, there's a lot of injuries for the Buccaneers,
there's no question about that. The Seahawks are obviously getting
some guys back, But this this feels like a pretty
huge freaking game to get to four and one on Sunday,
and more importantly for me, Mike start to establish something
at home where they have got to find a way
to start winning games in front of the home crowd.
(04:21):
So how how imperative is that from Mike McDonald you
think starting this weekend to prove he can win in
front of his own crowd.
Speaker 5 (04:29):
I think I think it means a lot. You know,
we've we've talked about it before. It's hard to me
for me to believe that they went through that that
series of games where they weren't really really taking the
homekill advantage, and you know, it's such an advantage, it's
so hard to play for another team in here in
(04:49):
the stadium, and yet they weren't doing it. So to
be able to kind of get it going again, I
think it just cranked. It will crank up the people
even more and that's what they need to have, and
they're gonna have a good season, Dave, I really think.
But they got to win at home.
Speaker 6 (05:06):
Baker Mayfield has been a different quarterback since he's been
at Tampa. He was a wild card in many senses,
says of the word in Cleveland. Why do you think
it's worked so well in Tampa?
Speaker 5 (05:17):
You know, that's a good question, Dick. The he is
and you're right, he is really when I watch him
play for Tampa, he's right on. He's throwing the ball
very very well. He's a good leader. You know. It's
it's working for him now. Why it didn't work before?
I think it's always if you look at the combination
between coaches, front office and player, and then how old
(05:41):
the player is, what they're asking that player to do
as a rookie or maybe a second year player, then
you kind of see why it might have failed. Because
right now, right now, he's throwing the ball lights out.
He's really good.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Mike.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
I want to go back to the Sea game with
Tampa to second, but just kind of going back to
Dick's question about Baker Mayfield. Man the league is littered
with guys that are getting second chances, right like guys
that we thought that were done. I mean Daniel Jones,
Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield justin field starting for the Jets.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
There's a ton of guys.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
Gino Smith obviously had a renaissance here in Seattle. Why
do you think that is that all of a sudden
a bunch of guys that were backups at struggling other
places and playing for multiple teams are now in some
ways flourishing with new homes.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
Well, a couple of things I think. I think one contractually,
when a rookie comes in, First of all, that quarterback
gets picked by a team that was really lousy. That's
why he gets picked so high. Okay, so he goes
to a tough situation. Then all of a sudden, the
money is so big now, and I know as salary
Cappan has balanced out and all that stuff. But you
(06:54):
sign that second contract, you've got to make sure and
your owner. A lot of the owners the league said, hey,
he's not doing it for us. Where he's gone, We're
gonna get somebody else. And I think that's what's happening
in the league.
Speaker 6 (07:06):
Coach I've been fascinated with the improvement of the Seahawks
D coming at the same time as the Baltimore D
falling apart. The Seahawks have allowed half as many points
as the Ravens had. Now, they have had a lot
of injuries. I do understand that, But how much is
it the injuries versus how much of his just Mike
McDonald bringing what he did at Baltimore here and they
(07:28):
just don't have it anymore there.
Speaker 5 (07:30):
I think it's a combination. I think Mike, you lose.
He got the job and on his resume, you know,
he's one of the top defensive coaches in the league
and that's why he's the head coach now of the Seahawks.
And so that's a big part of it now. But
injury injury, and you guys know this plays such a
big part on how your season goes. And Baltimore. Baltimore
(07:51):
is good. I mean, they have a good team, but
right now they're good guys. A lot of the good
guys aren't playing well.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Here was on this morning, I think it was, and
he mentioned Vida Veya, who's a former Husky defensive tackle
who plays now for Tampa Bay and he's a monster.
He's had an amazing NFL career. Seahawks have a guy
in Jalen Sundale who's athletic but may not be as
powerful as you're looking for from a center, and a
right guard, and Anthony Bradford who's been getting beat up
(08:22):
every single.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Day this on this radio station.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
So if you're Mike McDonald, and if you're a Clint Kobiak,
how concerned are you about Vida Veya as a defensive
lineman just wrecking your day offensively? And if you ever
faced a defensive lineman that was personally responsible for blowing
your offense up on a Sunday.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
Yeah, I mean that's what they're looking at really hard
this week because you have to have an answer, a
partial answer, that young man is gonna be. He's a
good player and he's gonna make his plays, but you
have to have some sort of an answer and maybe
some help, you know, in dealing with him, because he's
a load. Now, he's a load.
Speaker 6 (09:03):
How do you go about attacking a defense whose strength
is what you normally want to do? Because Tampa is
much better run d than they are past D and
you want to run the ball first. So how do
you go about attacking a defense like that?
Speaker 5 (09:19):
Well, don't be stubborn and don't be silly. You know
if you you you don't. You don't want to. You
don't want to. You don't want to play to their strengths.
You want to do the what what's what's the smart
thing to do? They the Seahawks can pass the ball.
They can pass the ball, you know. And I know
they want to run. I know I like to run.
I love to run. But I kind of like, do
(09:43):
what you do? You do what you want, what you
have to do to win the football game. And then
and then uh be smart with it.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
Well, let me ask you this, and I and I
hate to put you on the spot. Mike, all right,
Mike Congrin's with us.
Speaker 5 (09:55):
On the radio. Of course you do, of course you do.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
I hate it, but I'm gonna do it.
Speaker 5 (09:58):
Anyway.
Speaker 4 (09:59):
There was a bit debate on this radio station about
Geno Smith and do we keep him do we.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Let him walk?
Speaker 4 (10:05):
And then they went and got Donald and a lot
of the Geno whites out there. That's an actual religion,
by the way, began on the East coast and the
hills of Pennsylvania. A lot of the Geno Whites out there.
They said, this is the worst move ever. I can't
believe they're doing this. Now I'm watching Geno Smith and
he's not playing very well. His numbers are actually terrible
compared to Sam Donald's. Right now, have we gotten to
(10:26):
a point where we can all agree? A month then
the Seahawks made the right call ditching Geno and acquiring Sam.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
Yeah, I think we can. And I was one that said,
don't do it. It really surprised me and they but
they did it, and Sam Donalds has proven them right.
You know, it's taking nothing away from Geno. I think
Geno's in a tough sitch. We were talking about what
team do you go to? You know, he's in a
tough situation there with the with the Raiders, I think.
(10:54):
And but but the fact they got Donald and Donald
is really good and so it's working.
Speaker 6 (11:01):
Does the Genoit Church even exist anymore?
Speaker 3 (11:03):
Small township?
Speaker 6 (11:05):
Okay, I haven't seen any of the disciples recently.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
I haven't heard from any of them coaches. But they
can build the crap out of stuff.
Speaker 6 (11:15):
I'll tell you that you mentioned the banged up Ravens.
Let's go to the banged up team. That's going to
play tonight. Your former team, the San Francisco forty nine ers.
What is going on there? I find it harder and
harder to believe that it's just simply bad luck every
year that their starts get hurt. I mean, this is
five six years in a row where they just use
(11:35):
lose massive pieces to their puzzle.
Speaker 5 (11:38):
Yeah, I mean, it's it's It reminds me of my
last year really in Seattle. It's hard. You know, the guys.
I don't know, Dick to answer your question. You know,
I know that they have a good coaching staff, they
do things correctly, they're they're prepared and all that, but
they have been hurt and they've been hurt more than
(11:58):
a lot of people. So why maybe how they practice,
how they prepare in the preseason, I don't know. But
that's something that tonight is going to be because the Rams,
I mean, this is a big game, this is a
big division game, and the San Francisco they don't have
their guys.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
Hey, Mike, did you see what Shador Sanders did the
other day? They're starting Dylan Gabriel with the Browns. I
don't know if you caught this or not. A pair
of this goes back to something Rex Ryan I guess
said on TV about him. But Shador was asked about
Dylan Gabriel being picked to start a quarterback, and every
answer that Shador Sanders gave he just he mimed it right,
(12:38):
like he didn't say anything. And a lot of people
are like, you know, this guy's just a clown, like
this is why he fell? What the fifth round or
whatever it was? So did you see that? And if not,
do you have any response to him behaving like that?
Speaker 5 (12:51):
You know, I did not see it. I read about it.
You know that. You know, you get young men coming
into the league and some are great athletes, but not
very mature in how they do other things. And I
think he's one, Like I think his life and how
he's done it with his dad and so on, you know,
getting you know, Dion's larger than life. And the kid
(13:13):
now he came in and was great in college and
he now he's assumed some things and that's not the
way it is in the NFL. And I would there
if you think, if you really think he has a
chance to be one of your guys down the road,
you call him in you have some serious talks with
him about that.
Speaker 6 (13:31):
Wow, coach, I saw where this is the twenty third.
This week's the twenty third anniversary of Shawn Alexander's five
touchdowns and a half.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
Ooh game against the Vikings.
Speaker 6 (13:41):
What I didn't realize about that game is that with
two fifty four left in the first half, you guys
only had seventeen points and he had two touchdowns. He
had three touchdowns in a minute and one second in
the last three minutes of that half.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
What do you remember about that game?
Speaker 5 (13:56):
Well, and I'll tell you I love to run the ball.
I loved run the ball, and so that's what it says.
That's not funny, you know, you know I love to yes,
so yeah, so no, But you know what, he's a
great player. And at halftime, you know, were there, you go.
We made some good adjustments and we saw that what
(14:17):
we could do. And you know, as much as I
like to pass the ball, and I talk about it
a lot, you know, you have to do what's gonna
get you. It's gonna move it, what's gonna move the football.
And that's how we did it. And we had a
great back to do it.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
Mike before you go, and I could just hear you
just grinding your teeth during that Shador Sanders question, getting
angry or angry or and angry or I am so
glad that you do not have to coach Shador Sanders
and that you're not in Cleveland. Yes, but I wonder though,
before you go, have you ever had assistant coach on
head coach crime after a game that you had to
(14:52):
deal with? Did you hear about what happened between Liam
Cohene and Robert Salah after the Niners Jaguar game on Sunday?
So Robert, okay, Well, Liam Cohen went up to Robert
Sala and said, keep my name out of your mouth,
Keep my name out of your e fing mouth, to
which Salah replied, I will f your world up, says
(15:12):
Robert saw which he would have. Dude, Liam Cohen would
be killed by Robert Salf, no doubt. But I mean look,
Robert apologized, said it was the wrong choice of words.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Blah blah blah.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
Did you ever in your coaching career have to deal
with an assistant coach getting into a spat with either
another assistant coach or the opposing head coach.
Speaker 5 (15:34):
No, No, I never, I never did. The only uh,
the one time that I got a little fired up
was when we played Green Bay Mike McCarthy's first year
and it was a preseason game, preseason game, and it
was over and he kept passing the ball. I'm going,
what are you doing? Well, he had lost the opening
(15:55):
preseason game in his career there, and he felt the
need to do that, and so I little chat with him,
you know, after the game. So but that was that
was never an assistant coach.
Speaker 4 (16:05):
No, yeah, yeah, well the first time for everything. Who knows,
Maybe you come back and you coach one day and
you can cross them off your bucket. Listen, I hope
you're feeling good, man, Rest up and we will talk
next week.
Speaker 5 (16:15):
All right, man, coach, Yeah, I hope you're feeling too good.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
Dave, all right, Bud Mike Homrin with us on the
radio show We're Gonna Break. We're at the five twenty
Bar and Grill in Bellevue. We got rams Niners at five.
Luke Rayley's gonna hop on. Say hello from T Mobile
