(00:25):
Now Mike Holmgren on Sports Radio ninetythree point three KJR FM. All Right,
Zafti Dick at the Central Barn Restaurantin Bellevue, Mike Holmgren joins us.
Andy Reid, the head coach ofthe Chiefs, will join us at
bottom of the hour at about twentyfive minutes or so, and talk about
a fairly big game. He's gottenabout a week and a half now.
It's kind of important. It's gettingboring now for it was a four and
(00:49):
five years now for Andy. Iknow, are you kidding me? I
know he's having fun? Does this? Actually? I think as you get
older, you like to see peoplearound you have success. Yeah, you
had great success in the and Ithought you went to three Super Bowls,
turned around two franchises, you wona championship. Where to seeing Andy and
the success he's having right now kindof rank on your list of all time
(01:10):
great accomplishments for you, Well,it's, uh, it's really high because
you know, he's a great footballcoach. And I saw that in him
right away, I'll be honest withyou, as when he was my GA
at Bayu. I mean right away, I didn't know how far are.
I didn't know what his ambitions were, right. But but the thing,
(01:30):
Dave, he is he is oneof the finest guys I've ever met.
Really a good man and great teacherobviously, and I'm really happy for him.
So the Chiefs just spend the firstthree months of the season warming up
for these playoffs. It just seemedlike it. It seemed like almost in
the NBA. Coach the NBA todayis just like teams spend four months just
(01:52):
kind of sputtering and figuring things outand then all playoffs are here. Now
will play hard. Yeah, youknow what I think, Dick. They
made it. They had a kindof a big shift actually, Yeah,
on their offensive side of the ballfrom one year to the next. And
so yes, the learning curve wasthere, getting used to how they were
playing together, who trusted who,all that kind of stuff that you can't
(02:15):
overstate that stuff that's important, particularlyon offense right, well, firm defense
too, but particular on offense. And so their defense held them together.
But yeah, and now and thenthey hit it. Then all of a
sudden, okay and wham, they'vethey've been lights out down the stretch.
Well, we'll talk to Andy thebottom of the hour, give you in
any chance to catch up. I'msure we've got a couple of Taylor Swift
(02:36):
questions in too, by the way, for him at the bottom of the
hour. So the head coach ofthe Chiefs coming up in about twenty minutes
from now. But today Mike McDonaldintroduced as the new head coach of the
Hawks, and you're on with Iand yesterday Dan quinn got the commander's job.
Today, so everything's done. Thecoaching start cycle is over. From
what you've heard, what you've observedso far, What do you make of
the guy that has the job atthe vMac now, Well, you know
(02:58):
what, he was one of thetop for everybody. Uh sure, and
uh and just had to wait, which was had to be excruciating, I
think a little bit. But youknow, there was guys there being interviewed
and so many moving to this. Then that finally the fact that he was
able to get the guy he wantedand really from what he's done, what
(03:23):
that young guy has accomplished, youknow. And John today I saw a
brief clip on the on the computer. He's really happy about this. He
thought long and hard about this, knowing how he analyzes players to draft and
knowing how he approaches things. JohnSchneider that he he he crossed all the
(03:46):
t's, dotted all the eyes, and he came away with the guy he
wanted. So we'll see now whathappens. Something I talked about, you
look giddy today John did the pressconference. It was it was funny enough
and it and it leads me tothink that, Okay, a couple of
months ago, Pete Carroll's team goesinto Baltimore and gets demolished thirty seven to
(04:10):
three by that defense. Is thatdo you think that's kind of when it
started clicking in John's head that maybewe need a change here. You know
what, that's a good point.I hadn't thought of that. But yeah,
I think that's quite possible. Andknowing John the way I know him,
(04:30):
two things probably have you know everygeneral manager, every guy in that
position. You know that, youknow the coaches. You have a list
of coaches, You have the possibilityof this happening, of Pete retiring or
something. I got to be readyto pick the next guy. So he
had his list. He had hislist going right now. All of a
sudden, you play that game andyou go, okay, let's see this
(04:54):
guy's number four, And I meanmaybe he's number but still not knowing exactly
what's going to happen to own coach. Sure, sure, but but yeah,
some thoughts probably entered his mind atthat point. I would say he
was asked today, what if theRavens had won, right, would you
have waited? And in classic JohnSchneider fashion, he says, I don't
got to answer that question because theylost the game. Yeah you think he
would have waited to hire the guy. I do, Yeah, I do,
(05:15):
particularly the way it turned out.I you know, listen, I
said this, so I'm going tosay it again. I was a dan
Quinn guy. I thought, okay, that would be you know, his
experience his he's older. Obviously,he's been through the mill a little bit
more, a lot more actually thanMike McDonald. So that was kind of
(05:36):
where I was leaning. But yeah, no, he he would have waited
because he got his guy. Well, what's Mike's biggest challenge in year one?
You know, Dick? I thinkyou know he has been an assistant
coach. Now the jump to beinga head coach is big. I mean,
there's a lot of things you're goingto have to do that you thought
(05:59):
of but you haven't done yet,you know, And that's the real thing,
that's real. Yeah, and howyou react to whatever happens that way,
you know, And and so thoseare his challenges. He knows that,
you know right now. Can Igo back to when I was hired
first head job I ever had?He was the Packers, not in high
school. Well, I had ahigh school track coach, but not a
(06:23):
football coach. So that was thefirst head coaching job I ever had.
So I knew I had to havea great staff. I knew I had
to get good assistant coaches to bewith me on that while I was learning,
right, And so I think that'sthat's one of the bigger challenges he
has. How old were you whenyou got the packer job? You remember
forty four? You're forty four.Okay, so this guy's thirty six.
(06:44):
He'll be thirty seven, I thinkin June. Because of that, is
it necessary for him to go outand find veteran coaches to complete his staff?
I think he's going to have toget a couple of those guys absolutely
absolutely been in the league. Youhave a question, there's the one guy
I can go to r I hadthose guys. Yeah, I tell him
(07:08):
he'd been a head coach in college. He's been coaching the league along time.
So give us an example of whatyou why you needed him. Yeah.
I get I get mad about something. You know, typically I know
it's hard for you to believe, but I get mad about and and so
then I and uh, he mightcome walking into my office, you know,
and I'd go what And he go, I just wonder, And you
(07:31):
want to get a cup of coffee? I said, no, I don't
mind if I sit down. Okay, sit down, what do you want?
And he's to go, And thenhe kind of talked me off the
cliff a little bit, and hegoes. You listen, and it was
very clear, this is your deal, this is your deal. But maybe
whoop And he'd you know, counseledme that way. And I've had guys
(07:55):
do that my whole career, evenafter I'd coached for a long time.
You know the stories I've told youabout Gary Wright. Oh yeah, you
keep learning, you can and sothat's that to ditch point, that's gonna
be. That's gonna be one ofthe things he has to you know,
you gotta learn, you gotta growin the position. The name Leslie Fraser
was brought up on End Show today. How well do you know him?
I know him a little bit.We uh uh. Fact, he and
(08:16):
his wife Kate, Kathy gave usa ride. We were someplace and had
dinner at one of the meetings. You know, when I got to know
him a little bit more. Goodguy, really a good guy. I
liked him a lot. Throw Anothername that's getting thrown around is Ryan Grubb
for his offensive coordinator spot. Waswith the Huskies for a couple of years.
Fresno State with Kalin de Boor rightnow is set to go to Alabama,
(08:39):
but there's reports that he may beon the short list to take over
the offensive coordinator job. Would youfeel any sense of nerves giving the offensive
coordinator job to a defensive minded headcoach who's never coached a game in the
NFL, As a head coach who'sthirty six years old to a guy who's
never caught a play in the NFL, there'd be some reservation. Okay,
(09:00):
Yeah, listen, we're being honestabout this. I said, yeah,
I would hope. I would thinkfrom the things we just talked about prior
to your question, that who hehires in that position is going to be
really important. I think you know, particularly I read where he's going to
call the defensive plays right right, right, Okay, So when you're doing
that, just like when I wascalling the offensive plays, Okay, Because
(09:24):
you're doing that, your time doingsome other things gets focused into that.
So it's important that you can handthe defense or the offense, depending on
how you How the head coaches toa person say go with it, we'll
talk. Well, you know,we're I'm going to know what you're doing.
(09:45):
We're going to know all that stuff, but this is yours. Listen,
go ahead and take it. Howwell does what you saw from the
Husky offense this year translate what RyanGrubb does. How well do you think
it translates to the NFL? Oh? I think it translates. I mean,
you know, I mean, butagain, the college game is different,
the field's different, things are different, you know. But the schemes
(10:07):
and the things he did at Washington, wow, you know, they were
fun to watch. I mean thatteam was fun to watch offensively, So
I would assume that you know, clearly he knows his offense and he clearly
does a good job of it.So I don't think the transition there will
be very much. But yeah,it's impressive. Do you think he was
asked today about Geno Smith? MikeMcDonald was and he said, look,
(10:30):
last time I saw he's a probowler, right. I mean, there's
a lot of guys or pro bowlerswhatever. But I mean, Gino's not
a horrible quarterback. I don't knowif he's an elite level take you to
a title quarterback. I think he'sgonna be great at something. The Niners
are great in a lot of areas, so they can maybe stomach brock Perty
at some points in time. Butdo you think he's looking at Geno Smith
thinking I've got my guy, right? Now or to win a championship here,
(10:52):
I gotta find somebody else. No, I think he's there's so many
things going through his mind. Iam sure that maybe the know at the
press conference two days after you gethired, or a day after you get
hired, you're gonna be real carefulabout what you say. Sure, and
then, but but he, youknow, I think he's being honest.
You know, Gino has gone tothe you know, he's an NFL quarterback,
(11:13):
and he's done well. You know, he didn't do as well perhaps
last year as he did the yearbefore, but he has done well.
He's shown he can play. UH. And again, I go back to
when I went into to UH GreenBay and Don Makowski and we had quarterbacks
there that I didn't think. Ireally didn't think, Okay, I'm gonna
take this job because that quarterback's there. I'm not gonna take that. I
(11:35):
didn't take that because I talked tosix teams right right. I just was
so before before about getting to bea head coach in the league. It's
got like by the furnished house. When you move in, then you'll get
rid of some stuff. Right now, you've got the house that's right,
that's right. You know, youknow, coach, by watching what I've
seen in this year's playoffs, it'sactually buoyed my confidence in Geno Smith.
(11:56):
That's the second time you've used theword booied. Is that right? That
is impressive. I like that word. That's unbelievable. Apologize, I've I've
reiterated. Oh, it's great,it's a phenomenal word. Once an hour.
Doing it again, I will,I'll do it. I'll do it.
And the reason it's booied my confidencein Geno Smith is because I don't
think there's a lot of quarterbacks inthe NFL that elevate their team's games.
We're seeing it in the playoffs. We're seeing dak We're seeing Lamar Jackson.
(12:20):
We're seeing Brock Purty play five outof eight quarters. Pretty crappy. So
how many quarterbacks in the NFL haveyou seen right now that actually lift all
boats of their of their team whenthe you know what hits the fan right
now? Yeah, one one,he's playing next time. I think you're
right, and he is playing nextI think you're right now. Yeah,
(12:41):
But you know that's all it takeswhen you play the big game. Yeah,
maybe this is the game okay, perfect, everything works, you know,
and there's no no problems. Butyou have a quarterback. You look
at those names you mentioned, exceptfor well, they're all relatively young,
you know. When I went tothe Super Bowl with the forty nine ers
(13:01):
of Joe Montanna had been in anumber of them. You know. Farv
would be the exception. He camein and played a great game as a
relatively young quarterback when we won theSuper Bowl, and he was capable of
having weird games. You know.So you know it's but what they've shown,
all those guys you mentioned have showntheir ability at some point to lead
(13:24):
their team and make the big play, make a beautiful path surprise you.
You go, oh wow, lookat that. You know. So it'll
be interesting to see what happens inthe super Bowl. But you know,
Lamar Jackson, we talked about itbefore against Andy. You know, they
their defense. It was a closegame in Kansas City, did not score
(13:46):
any points in the second half, right you know, So did they throttle
down a little bit offensively? Idon't think they did. I think they
went in with a game plan. And then to Mike McDonald's credit, I
believe that you have to be agood question to ask him at halftime,
what adjustments did you make? Becausewhatever he did, you know, he
(14:07):
stopped them from moving the ball.Well, I don't have any teams shut
out Kansas City over the course ofa half, and they did that obviously
on Sunday. So I was impressedby him. I've told Dick a couple
of times that in the last timeI was in the same stadium as him,
he kicked Washington's ass at Michigan Stadiumin twenty twenty one. I never
thought then that he'd be the nextcoach of the Seahawks. Obviously, but
everywhere this guy goes, his schemeswork. And now I asked him today,
(14:28):
you work for John Harball, youwork for Jim Harbaugh. They like
to run the ball. You thinkhe just picks up where those guys left
off and says, well, thisis what I've been exposed to for the
last fourteen to fifteen years, SoI'm doing the same thing. Or is
it possible that he's got this thingin the back of his head where he
wants to be the greatest show onturf. Now that would shock me.
That would shock me because I havenever met a defensive guy that didn't come
(14:52):
out with something like that, somethinglike he let's just run the ball,
you know, stomp kreutz, krill, gil will William Boom with the moon.
That's the actual play, by theway. Yeah, but you know,
and so that's quite honestly, quitehonestly, that's why when you asked
me those questions the last couple ofweeks, I was I was thinking,
(15:13):
okay, to hire an offensive guy, to kind of got a good offensive
personnel, get that thing rolling, and then do it the other way,
you know, because look at peoplethink I'm a past crazy person. We
were pretty balanced. We were prettybalanced, and I knew. I knew
running the ball was important. Well, you had the MVP when you went
(15:33):
to the super Bowl. He's arunning back. I knew we needed that,
you know. But I never cameout and say, Okay, we're
gonna you know, I just Ijust didn't have it in me to say
that, because that was no fun. They had no fun, right.
You mentioned Mahomes there being the oneguy, and I completely agree with you.
People are already starting to talk abouthis legacy and if he wins part
(15:54):
of his legacy, if he winshe'll have three rings by age twenty eight.
Tom Brady turned thirty seven and stillhad three rings, so they will
be equal. And yet almost adecade apart. Would it be fair to
start putting him in the greatest ofall time conversation if he has three rings
(16:15):
by age twenty eight, Yes,but typically people don't start talking about that
till you've been in the league tentwelve years, you know. But listen,
Yeah, think of that for asecond, and you look at the
two styles quite different, two differentplayers really, you know, in two
different systems, two different head coaches. Yep. And so but what he's
(16:37):
done at Kansas City, Yeah,it's remarkable. It's really something. Well,
a guy that you know very welland a guy that's going for his
third title. Andy Reid is goingto break away from his busy day getting
ready for the Super Bowl to talkto you. We initially had called to
get him out with me and Dickand he said no. We called back,
we said you're here. He saidyes. So that's the kind of
poll you've got. So Andy Reid, the coach of the Chiefs, he's
(16:57):
a week and a half away fromSuper for Sunday, He's gonna join us
next on ninety three three KJRFM.This is your home for the Huskies,
the Crook, the NHL Playoffs andSuper Bowl fifty eight Sports Radio ninety three
point three KJRFM. Now back toSaftie and all right, we're back here
(17:19):
at the Central Bar and Restaurant inBellevue. Softy, Dick Faane, Mike
Colemgrin, Rob rang will join uscoming up five twenty eight. His thoughts
on what's happening in Mobile if theSenior Bowl, but joining us right now.
Guys on the phone, head coach, if you're AFC champion Kansas City
Chiefs getting ready for the Super Bowlnext Sunday. Uh Andy Reid is with
(17:40):
US coach at Softy Dick Faane andCoach Holmgren's here as well. How are
you man, I'm doing good, guys, Coach, how you doing?
Hey, I'm doing great. Andy, Thank you so much for coming on.
I know it's kind of a busy, hectic a couple weeks here coming
up, but listen, we gotsome questions. How was it going on
the road for the last couple ofweeks because normally teams come and face you
(18:02):
in Kansas City. Yeah, no, it it was it was different.
You know how Buffalo is crazy peopleare They're they're wild up there. So
it was that was an experience. It just it was that was different.
You know, before we get intothe serious football stuff, because that's what
(18:23):
this is all about. I gotto ask you a couple of things in
your commercial, which I love allof them. You know, the thing
about the thing about that when youtook the bite of the cheeseburger, how
many bites? You know I've donecommercials. You take fifteen takes? How
many bikes of the burger did theymake you take before they said okay,
this is a good take? Howmany bites? Oh? I asked you
(18:45):
if I could take a few extraswere vably good? I mean they were
really good burgers. Yeah, theymake you take so many, so many
different They brought out a bucket.I said, now, I'm not spitting
out in the bucket tucket. Idid take the bite and spit it out.
After about the fiftieth bite, Isaid, okay, give me that
budget. Those are commercials are great. Hey, listen, now, is
(19:11):
it getting harder now or different atall? Since Patrick Mahomes and you guys
you've been at this so so much. How about this recent run, Is
it getting harder? Yeah, Ithink it is. I mean, nobody's
more familiar with that than you atSanta fran and at you know, in
Green Bay and Seattle. I mean, when you do well, you're everybody's
(19:33):
best game and most important game, and so you get everybody's best shot.
And you used always say this, every time you go a different level in
the playoffs, the game gets faster. And so somewhere in between a playoff
game and a normal season game iswhat you're getting every week by getting these
guys best shot. And so theguys really have to They got to do
(19:56):
the best they can persevere, Iguess out the season and challenged throughout the
season. Well, no one getsthem ready better than you. Listen as
much as people talk about Patrick Mahomesand the offense, the defense has really
looked pretty darn good in the lastcouple of weeks or the last part of
the season, certainly, you know, how do you get to how how
do you look at these guys aftertheir the last couple of games they played,
(20:21):
They've kept us in the games wewere we had some young guys playing
on offense, and we were tryingto grow and to grow. Our defense
just took over and they kind ofwent through this, and they kind of
went through this last year, andthen the offense was going through it this
year, or just having young guysin place and the offense about time for
(20:44):
the defense. Last year, thedefense is about time for the offense.
This year didn't mature just a littlebit. You know, when I knew
you were coming on, I lookedat some of the old pictures we had
together, and I looked at thefirst staff we had in Green Bay,
and I realized how important I alwaysknew, but I realize again how important
staffs are to the head coach. How about you? How's your staff?
(21:04):
Yeah, it's incredible. That's uh. You tell you your lifeline as a
head coach, and you're not goingto do very well if if you don't
have guys around you. Again, you're a great teacher of that because we
had eight thousand guys, Like everybodythat was on your staff got to be
(21:25):
a head coach, and it wasbecause we were hanging over you. So
I mean that that was a bigthing. Well, I appreciate you saying
that, but you know what,Patrick Mahomes, He's been so good.
How has he handled all the adulationand all the all the stuff he's going
through. Yeah, because I thinkyou love him. He just he's humble.
(21:47):
Yeah, works hard, He's gonnahe's a Jim rat, so you
gotta kick him out of here. He's always here. He grew up in
a locker room with his dad beinga pro baseball player, so he he
gets that part of it. He'sgreat with the players. He's great with
the front office people, which ishard to do. So have friends of
(22:10):
the locker room that aren't calling youknow, telling you that you're schmoozing up
to everybody. But he he handlesthat very well. And it's a tribute
to the kid. He just does. He does a heck of the job.
Yeah, no doubt. Hey,coach, it's it's Dave Sophie mother
here. I want to ask youabout playing the underdog role first time in
your life. You've been the underdogin three straight games Buffalo, Baltimore and
(22:33):
now the Super Bowl next Sunday againstthe Niners. I just wonder kind of
how much do you play that upin the locker room and use that as
motivation for your guys. Yeah,I mean Listen, I get why.
I mean, we were up anddown this year, and so I understand
why we're the underdog, you know. So the main thing is that we're
(22:57):
not focusing on that. I don'ttalk to the guys about it. They
all know that stuff. I mean, today's world. So we just go
try to go practice and get betterwhat we're what we're doing. So that's
uh, that's where our focus hasbeen. And every week we've got a
little bit better and a little bitbetter. So we're hoping that continues right
(23:18):
right through this game. Coach istick Fane. Thanks again for joining us.
It hasn't always been easy this yearfor for you guys, but you've
got your team playing great at theright time. Why do you think your
team is peaking right now? Yeah, I think it's, uh the locker
room, I got good I've gotgood teachers as coaches in the locker room.
We've got some strong leadership there. While it's Pat Mahomes, Travis Kelsey,
(23:41):
Chris Jones, Snead, you know, I mean all these guys with
Jerry Snead, all these guys arethey're all in and some teams have some
teams you got their their team Imean, I hear the war stories.
Sometimes you get coaches have to begguys to practice. These guys they all
practice. I mean if they ifthey not, if they're not rising,
(24:03):
you know they're really hurt or theywant to get out there and go.
But that's because Pat mahomes prize everyday child, Kelsey p Chris Jones.
You know, these guys go hardevery day and this you allow him out
there. You know, Andy, you've been in super Bowls lately, and
you and I were in a superBowl together, and it's been a long
(24:23):
time since I was there. Asa schedule for you and the what the
league asked you to do in theseweeks in the week prior to the super
Bowl, has it changed much oris it pretty much the same? I
took you exactly your schedule and Iparked it in these things here. I
still had a copy of our itineraryand so I use the exact same thing.
(24:45):
I mean, at times sometimes they'llchange the times if you're a home
team or away team when you cando the media and not do the media
and all that, but the practiceeverything stayed the same. You know.
I I can't say it enough.I'm so proud of you and what you've
accomplished so far. But I gotto be honest, you're no Spring Chicken
(25:06):
anymore. And you know you're you'regetting up there. Of course I haven't
changed at all. I'm getting upthere. Does it even enter your mind?
How long you want to do this? I haven't. I really haven't
gone there, which I mean,I feel good and I've got I've got
a good situation here, great ownershipand so and good players. So I've
(25:30):
i haven't gone there. But Iknow, I know that can happen any
day. I mean, I getit. There's right now. I'm good
today, I'm good. I've heardtoo many stories that you just know when
it's up, it's up, andit just hitches. So I'm I'm so
far, so good today. I'mgood well, and and you just kind
(25:52):
of picking up on it. It'sit's softy again. If you win this
one, that's three and yeah.I just wonder if you ever get to
a point where you saying, man, you know, maybe I got a
chance to do something really special andyou know, win five or six or
maybe even go after Bill and hisrecord. Is that even anything that you've
set as a goal for yourself.Do you think about anything like that at
all. Yeah, I don't gothere, man, I just I don't
(26:15):
know if that's healthy in this business. Yeah, there's so much competition.
You're just trying to get the nextActually you're trying to get the next touchdown.
That's what you're trying to get.But I don't ever go there.
It's too much of a team sport, I think to do that. And
I'm lucky to be in the leagueto start with one for coach, I'd
still be coaching the outfit the linein college somewhere, I'm sure. So
(26:37):
I appreciate it every day I getto do this thing, and that's kind
of where I'm at. Well,no question, and again, chief said
coach. Andy Reid is with uson the show, and look, I
got to be the one to askyou because Mike doesn't want to bring this
up. The Taylor Swift thing iskind of a story. You may have
noticed that, by the way,And it looks like you guys have a
great relationship. There's a picture goingaround of you on the field and ball
(27:00):
the more with YouTube pointing at eachother during the trophy ceremony. I'm wondering
Andy did you ever think at anypoint in time during this year that this
relationship with Taylor and Travis and reallyjust the team could turn into a distraction.
And if so, how did youget through that? Yeah? So
I've known her a long time sinceshe was a little shit when they're from
(27:23):
the Philadelphia area, they're from Pennsylvania. Her dad actually played at Delaware and
and so I I knew her dadbecause he was an Eagles fan. And
so I know when she met Travis, she goes, you know, I
know your coach, and Travis bobfell off the chair. He said,
(27:45):
he was great. But she's agood she's actually, you know, for
as big as she is, Imean she since the Queen passed away.
I mean, you've got Taylor Swift. I mean, that's that is and
she's very famous, and so sheis very humble and that's that's what you
love about her, you know, speaking of Taylor Swift. I didn't want
(28:07):
to ask that question. Dave justasked you, but I did. I
did say to Kathy and the girls, I said, I'm going to talk
to Andy. I think I'm goingto ask him if he can get me
a Taylor Swift T shirt. Theystarted they started yelling at me. Don't
you dare. We'll never speak toyou again. Don't do that. He's
got other things to think about andnow, and I knew you did,
(28:30):
so the thing you're thinking about nowis San Francisco. What about the forty
nine ers. Yeah, Cal's agreat job with that crew. He's got,
he has good talent. He usesthe talent. I'm saying, both
sides of the ball and special teamsthink they've got. They're really a good
football team, and they have ahistory and so they handle all of this
(28:56):
with with ease and do their thing. But he's done a nice shot there.
Well, Coaches Dick again, beforeI let you go, I'd love
to get your thoughts on your opponentfrom last week, who is now our
new head coach in Seattle. Anythingyou can share with us about Mike McDonald.
I think he'll be a good hands. He's a he's a young guy,
and I really find football mind.We just got done competing, I
(29:18):
guess, and so I had achance to watch follow the games, and
he sure did a nice job there, and I'm sure he's a good guy.
So I think I think you're ingood hands. Was there anything about
his defense you find unique specifically tohim. Yeah, he's gonna bring anybody
and everybody, including like the popcornvendor man. He'll bring them all on
(29:38):
you, and he does it.He's selective when he does it, but
he's got a great The scheme isgreat defensively. You know, I know
how busy you are, and Iknow I really appreciate coming on the show.
You know, we we have along history together and I'm so proud
(29:59):
of you and what you accomplished, and you've done it in a very humble
manner. So thank you again,my friend, and good luck, good
luck in the super Bowl. Thankscoach. Thanks all right, coach,
appreciate you, thank you. Ilove it. Great stuff, Andy Reid
right there, I mean, it'sa hard guy to not root for,
right, I mean, just hearingyou talk about him, he comes across
as a great dude. He's embracedthe whole Taylor Swift thing. So already
(30:21):
come back and get a quick takebecause we'll talk abou about this next week
on what we think we'll see nextSunday, and then Andy Reid's thoughts on
what we just heard from him aboutMike McDonald The New Seawk head coach.
Next from the Central Bar and Restaurantin Bellevue. Right here on ninety three
to three KJRFM. This is yourhome for the Huskies, the Crook,
the NHL Playoffs, and Super Bowlfifty eight Sports Radio ninety three point three
(30:42):
kJ r R FM. Now backto Sufdi And I think he'll be a
good hands. He's a he's ayoung guy and a really find football mind.
We just got down repeat, Iguess, so we had a chance
to follow the games, and yeah, he's gonna bring anybody and everybody he
including like the popcorn vendor, mant'llbring him off and he does it.
(31:04):
He's selective when he does it,but he's got a great The scheme is
right. Hey, it's not thepopcorn vendor, it's the white claw vendor.
Come on, guys, it's twentytwenty four Andy, Holy moly.
But hey, good stuff from coachread Man. That was great having him
on. Love that you guys havethat relationship. You first met him in
what the early eighties? Is thatright? Yeah? When I was at
BYU, I was in charge ofthe graduate assistant coaches. I had six
(31:26):
guys there that were and Andy wasone of them, and this is what
eighty one eighty two year it waseighty two eighty two, So we're talking
forty two years ago. Yeah.I mean, how many people out there
listening have people in their lives thatthey've known for forty two years? I
know. I mean, he's he'suh. He helped me. I remember
putting in the playyard in my backyardin Provo from My kids were little at
(31:47):
the time, and he came overand he helped me, you know,
and I helped him get into SanFrancisco State where I coached, help him
get his first job. I mean, we have a long history. And
then when we played against each other, it was you know, when he
was with the Eagles and they weregood and we were trying to get there.
You know. We We've gone throughsome some interesting times with one another.
(32:08):
So now he's a great guy,he really is, and as good
a football coach as he is,he and I think I even say he's
a better human being. He's agood guy. They're so easy to root
for. That's what I was makingthat mentioned a couple of days ago.
I mean, this is so differentthan the Patriots dynasty, right because Belichick
(32:29):
nobody wanted to root for Belichick ifyou were unless you were a Patriots fan,
and a lot of people didn't likeTom Brady. But it doesn't seem
like there's that same type of vitrioltowards this potential dynasty as there was that
one. No. I think whenpeople, although you hear little whisperers that
gee they in it again, wegot to you know, But it's not
the same, right, Dick, and and anyway, listen, how you
(32:52):
get mad at Andy? He can'tmake him mad at Andandy? You know,
he's in there and he looks likethe he looks like the grandpa you
know. Yeah. I was gonnasay, Fozzy Bear, how do you
get that bear? For God's sakes? But I mean two words, spygate
and the Flakegate. They've had noneof that in Kansas, none of that.
The only thing that's remotely irritated peopleis the Taylor Swift thing. And
(33:13):
I don't get it, but there'speople out there that are bothered by this
whole thing. I think it's phenomenal. This is gonna be the highest rated
super Bowl of all time, andit's gonna be partly because of Taylor Swift.
Oh, I know you know, and I listen. I'm one of
those I look at that, Igo. I was thinking before I heard
what Andy said right about her, about yeah, about her. I was
thinking, Man, if I wasstill coaching and that was going on,
(33:37):
I don't know that would that.I can't scratch. You'd have daughters though,
that would love it. That's thedifference. But I'm thinking, is
I can't let this be a distraction. And clearly he has he's known her
when she was little. Sure, can you call him back though, do
us a favor. Can you callhim back and see if he can get
(33:57):
her on this show next week?Sure? Okay for me? All right,
all right, coach, you andI have been in cahoots for years
about kicking field goals. Ooh yearsyears. You and I are the same,
nice, right, nice? Whatwere you thinking when Dan Campbell did
what he did in that game?I went, just let it out.
(34:19):
It's okay. I was yelling atthe TV. Kick it, kick it,
kick it on both occasions. Yeah, okay, yeah, because take
the points, take the points. It's gonna it's you know, it was
a San Francisco is coming back.Okay, stop the momentum, just a
little bit stuff the momentum, youknow, answer field goal. With the
field goal, boom, you're backwhere you started at halftime. The one
(34:39):
that I don't get though, isthe last one, because that would have
tied the game at twenty seven.All. Yeah, Now, we've talked
about this that Matt Bagsley doesn't havethe greatest record on forty plus yard field
goals. If he kicks the fieldgoal and he misses it, are people
going to be busting his balls fortaking the field goal when they normally go
forward and his kicker doesn't kick kickslike that. Yes they would, Yes
(35:02):
they would. That's the thing, but that's what you got to live with
as a coach. You make decisionsand but then you also have to and
I'm not talking about analytics here.I'm not talking about that. I'm just
talking about at the time, takethe points. You know that the feeling
of where you are in the game, what the field goal give you,
Calm down, we're back in it, or we're ahead or tied whatever it
(35:24):
was. Yeah, so, buthe's been he was aggressive all season and
it worked for him most of thetime. But you mentioned the correct word.
I think momentum, right, isn'tit a bigger momentum play. If
a team goes forward on fourth downand you stopped them on fourth down versus
(35:44):
a we kind of got lucky theymiss the field goal, Yes, exactly.
No, if you stop a teamon fourth down, that's a huge
shift in adrenaline, a huge shifton the sideline. Yeah. And then
yeah, so yeah, I feltbad. You know, I was,
I was rooting. I coached inSan Francisco, I grew up there.
But I would wanted to see theLions, you know, get into the
(36:04):
game. You know, it's Ilike to see a team that's never been
there for a long time. Yeah, yeah, but forever. Yeah,
super Bowl Area. Yeah, howwould you have handled blowing a twenty four
to seven lead myself? Because Iwould have blamed myself. That would not
have gone good. You know,I told you my recovery after we lost
a super second Super Bowl to Denver. It took me. It took me
(36:29):
too long to get over that one. And then just and coaching. People
always see the kind of the entertainmentvalue, the fancy stuff, the movie
stars, the Taylor sweats, Butwhen it gets right down to the nitty
gritty, when you go home aftera tough loss. Yeah, boy,
it's hard, no doubt. Allright, listen, great job with Andy
reid Man. Thank you for gettinga award for that. It's in the
(36:50):
mail, really, thank you. It's on the way. I just need
your address. By the way, you're the man, my great stuff.
And we're talking a week, fuddy, let's talk. Let's talk super Bowl
next week. Okay, we gotthe same schedule, in the same schedule.
Four you want to change. Youwant to go in too, three
one to two hours instead of one. Mike commute you know, Oh yeah,
you're commute. He's gonna be homebefore you and I are off the
ear. You know that, right, Like with the next segment, you'll
be home before we're off. Ilike, do you really do that automatically?
(37:15):
Really? No? See, yeah, you know I thought maybe for
once she had a compliment. Iknew there's no way that was gonna happen.
I get out here. We'll seeyou next Thursday. Mike Congrin with
us on the show. We're gonnabreak Ian Ferness sat down with Mike McDonald
from the vMac. We're gonna listento that. And then here from Rob
rang who's gonna thought on the onthe senior ball man. Lots going on
(37:36):
in Mobile, Alabama. Michael Pennix. Apparently he's putting a show on down
there. We'll talk to Rob comingup five thirty right here on ninety three
three kjr FM
