Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to the exclusive home of the Huskies, the
Kracking and March Madness. Now back to SOFTI inded proudly
brought to you by Emerald Queen Casino on Sports Radio
ninety three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Go.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Let's be looking to throw it in, gets it up
top two queens ribbling left, big step down the lane,
runner for the win.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Back came bang, came Bank and Maryland is one. Maryland
is going to the Sweet sixteen.
Speaker 4 (00:29):
Our next day ago did he? That's a great call,
great call. Our next guest was right there. Well, I
mean hell, they could walk to the arena from his house.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
We got six.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
It's funny how the guys that lived near these arenas
and stadiums always draw the local assignment. Kevin Harlan's going
to Kansas City, lives in Kansas City.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Pj's on Queen Anne. That's because they're big damn day.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
It was probably taking his little scooter down there to
Queen An with a helmet on the whole thing.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Man, but joining us on the air.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
Former Sonic head coach Seaton Hall head coach, knows a
thing or two about the tournament was in Seattle for
Maryland obviously over the weekend. CSU Oregon, Arizona. Our friend
PJ carlism opj how are you man?
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Excellent? Soft and Dick good to be with you, Hey,
come on. The truth is the network's new. They could
save on a hotel and why it was a home
game because they didn't have to spend any money for expenses.
Speaker 5 (01:23):
Absolutely, and it makes it makes sense. But you saw
the best region. I don't think there's any question about
the games that you got there. I was there on
Friday for that great Colorado State game, and then the
ones on Sunday were fantastic. But let's talk about the
Derek Queen play. When you saw Derek Queen go to
the rack, you were only thirty feet from him. Did
you even think in your mind that it was a
(01:46):
traveling violation?
Speaker 2 (01:49):
You know, it looked like but now like what everybody
calls the eurostep used to call travel, right, he got
another he got the foot down. What does raps say?
The puppy? He got the puppies in there. But it
would have been an extremely controversial call had they called
to travel. But I think letter of the loft. He
(02:10):
slowed it down. Yeah, he took a step. Yeah, I
thought he did. I was surprised because I thought they
would either post him or go to Jacoby Gillespie or
you know, one of the guys who put it on
the floor. But then again, Kevin knew. Kevin said after
the game that DQ said he wanted it, but he
(02:31):
loves to put the ball on the floor. I mean,
for a big guy, they put the ball in his
heads a lot. They do that short role. They run
a high pick and roll and they give it to
him right away, like two steps down, and then he's
either dribbling the ball and making a pass. So it
was a great call. But some move, really really good move.
Tough shot going left, shouting across his body and the
(02:53):
kid eats and morton the transfer from Purdue. He did
a really good job pressure in the shot. It wasn't
like he wasn't. I mean, it was really a heck
of a play.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Well, PJ.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Carlismo was with us and the organ Arizona game obviously
was phenomenal as well. On Sunday, and you know, me
and Dick as Husky fans were pulling for Arizona big time.
Glad to see him knock out the Evil Empire and
dispatch of them. But from what you saw of Arizona
in person on Sunday night, do they have enough to
at least hang with Duke or maybe even knock them
(03:25):
off in the Sweet sixteen?
Speaker 2 (03:26):
Well, yeah, sure they do. They got beat pretty good
by Duke earlier in the year. They played him in
November or December. Duke handled him. I'm gonna say it
was maybe fifteen points. But I think Arizona's playing better
than I'm sure Duke is too, But no, I think
Arizona's very good. They got to be killum Love plays
the way he played the other night, they got a chance.
(03:47):
And the Carter is unbelievable young kid. I mean he
really I was impressed with Tommy Lloyd's team. You know
you mentioned Husky's. The one thing I want to say
Climate Pledge was everybody loved it. The people from you, Dove, uh,
Sam Schwartz, Pet John, everybody you dub did a great
job hosting, and everybody loved the facility. The crowds were great.
(04:11):
It was I mean, I thought it was a really
good day for Seattle basketball and and for you dubbed
two days.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
I should say, not one no question about you.
Speaker 5 (04:21):
You mentioned that you know, Kevin Willard, you know, asked,
you know, in the in.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
The huddle, who wants the ball? Would you ever do that, PJ?
Down by one, would you ever.
Speaker 5 (04:29):
Just go to it a college team at Seaton Hall
and say, okay, Andrew Gays, do you want it?
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Who wants? Who wants the basketball?
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Right now?
Speaker 3 (04:36):
He let Jimmy chipp would take the ball.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
That's why Kevin's coaching and I'm doing broadcasts. He was.
It was amazing, Uh, Derek Queen, It's what a great
young talent. He's really an amazing player and uh, you know, hopefully, uh,
I don't know how long he's going to be around,
but he's got a heck of a future. But it's
really funny, even like, you know, an All American, a
(05:02):
really good player, and yet you could still see how
nervous these guys were, particularly the first day on Friday.
I mean it's there's nothing like you know, that single
elimination winning go home. I mean it's just that really
that gets them for sure, no question.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
Well, PJ Carlismo is with us on the radio show,
and PJ is a former coach, and Dick just asked
you to put your coaching hat on what do you
make of Danny Hurley? Guy misses twenty one threes in
their game over the weekend and then has caught bitching
about the referees as he's walking off the floor. He's
kind of turning into a villain man, and a lot
of people's eyes. What would you say to Danny Hurley
(05:43):
if he if he did ask you for your advice
on how to deal with this with these emotions?
Speaker 2 (05:47):
Man? Now he talks, you know, I talked to him.
I'm biased because I coached Danny and he's a good
friend as his family. He's still young as a coach,
He's got he's got a couple of he's got a
couple of He don't play championships, so he's doing He's
doing a lot of things right. I thought in the
press confidence he was good. Uh you know what he
(06:08):
said about his opponent, he was classy. But walking out
and with Baylor, you know he he could he could
handle that better for sure. But again, his emotion is
a huge part of him. Uh, we talk all the time.
I haven't talked to him since the game. I definitely
plan out it and I will, but I won't say
(06:28):
if he asked me I'll say something, but I won't. Uh,
you know, I won't say anything. His father obviously is
one of the He's a hall literally, a Hall of Famer.
Danny's gonna be a Hall of Famer himself. You know,
win two n CUAA championships and not getting a Hall
of Fame. But I you know, he could have could
have handled that a lot better. Particularly his team play
so well. I mean, they had Florida on the ropes.
(06:51):
If they get I think not both, if they get
either of those three throw rebounds miss free throw rebounds
down the stretch, they might You know, a lot of
people really didn't think you kind of had a chance,
and they had. They had Florida on the rope. So
he played well. They had won thirteenth straight NCAA games.
It's hard, but uh, he'll learn. He'll handle it better
(07:14):
as he gets older. He's still a very young coach.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
PJ.
Speaker 5 (07:17):
We're seeing a lot of shock this year, and some
people are equating that with nil transfer portals. Is this
just kind of a one year blip on the radar
where we don't have Cinderella's or is this something that
we're going to be seeing more commonly now I would be.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
Afraid if I would be afraid if I thought it
was going to be different. I'm afraid it's going to
be like this, But it's still one year. I don't
want to jump to the conclusion because it's one year.
We've had Cinderella's the last couple. It's gotten to the
point Softie and Dick where now the worst thing that
could happen if you're a mid major, low major forgetting
(07:56):
you know, Division two guys also, But I mean even
if you're a lesser school, even in the power conferences,
if you're the best player, if all of a sudden
you blossom and you show what you're capable of doing,
your god, your family, your agent, everybody's got agents. Now
they're telling you got to go. You can get a
lot more, you get twice what you're getting here. So
(08:18):
it's I'm afraid it's here to stay. I don't think
it's going to be like this. I thought this year
the thing I thought that it would be near to
chalk would be winning the whole thing. But I'm surprised
nobody's advanced. You thought we had Colorado State advancing. But
I think there's going to be Cinderella sneaking in. I
(08:39):
don't think they're gonna get shut out the way we
did this year. I mean, you got seven from the SEC,
four from the Big Ten, and four from the Big twelve.
Duke's alone acc school. If you can believe that they're
really free conferences, you know represented. But I'm afraid it's
the way we're headed at. The transfer rule bothers me
more in the portal. I don't mind the guys getting money.
(09:00):
The transfer rules of joke. You guys can't just go
and play immediately and just jump from school to school.
I mean, it's room. To me, it's room football and
basketball in the college game. Fortunately it's not happening as
much in the other sports. But it's a joke. What's
happening now in basketball and football?
Speaker 4 (09:18):
Well, PJ, before you go, PJ, Carlisma with us. Uh,
where's the upsets this weekend?
Speaker 2 (09:24):
All right?
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Help us make some money for God, I need some money.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
I think I think that one of the two old
guys is going to get through. If Kelvin gets through,
it's not an upset I think him or is. I'm
hoping one of those guys gets through. There. You know
they're they're close to my vintage. I'd like I'd like
to see that. I thought the upsets were last week.
To be honest with you, I thought you kind of
had a chance to get Uh to get Florida Maryland
(09:52):
Florida is going to be a great game here. I
think that's the best. You mentioned Arizona. I'm not picking
him to beat Duke, but the way they're playing right now,
and when you have a guy as good as kill
of Love, like the way he delivered that team down
the stretch, wouldn't shock me. And I still think I'll
you know, Auburn and Alabama as good as that then
(10:14):
at times that looked very vulnerable recently. So I somewhere
along the line, somebody's got I think somebody's gonna knock
somebody off. I hope we don't have a whole bunch
of ones and twos in the you know, in San Antonio.
No matter what, it's going to be a great final four.
But I'd love to see at least somebody else other
in a warn or two advanced.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
How about the number two seeds that you like the best?
Is there one that you think can win the championship
or is it just a one seed that's gonna win
the title in your mind?
Speaker 2 (10:42):
No, no, no, I know I think one or two
wouldn't surprise me. I think I thought Saint John's had
a great chance. You got a dodge a bull somebody
to win six games in this tournament. You got it.
Dodge a bullet to night when you don't get calls,
or you're a good player, rolls an ankle, or just
has a four game. And that's what happened with R. J. Lewis.
But I'm not taking anything away from Arkansas and Caw
(11:04):
the job they did. Uh. I thought John's was good
enough to win it. I haven't seen Texas Tech. I
know there are three, but I haven't seen them. We're
missing it. Two in our region. We you know, we
got one, three, four, but we don't. We don't have
to two Michigan. Michigan State is really good. Michigan State's
a two, aren't they? Yep?
Speaker 3 (11:22):
So is Alabama.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Tennessee got to tweet. I hardly watched the other regions.
I got my hands full watching ours, and I love
the West they got. You know, you guys said it
when I came on the air, we far and away
had the best first two, you know, certainly the best Sunday,
and we had a great game on Friday, starting it
off with Colorado. Stay. I think we're gonna have I
think the East and the West have been the best regions,
(11:44):
and I think that that that's going to hold true
this weekend.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
DJ Carlismo, great stuff. Man, enjoy the rest of the tournament.
We'll talk soon.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Pace.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
I was appreciated, buddy.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
All right, So if you did go being with you,
thank you.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
You got it.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Man.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
Don't forget.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
We got the Sweet sixteen to Masay on nine point
fifty am, starting at three oh nine, I believe is
the first game. And then Friday they're gonna be over
on the FM side, uh, because we got Opening Day
Baseball on Thursday coverage from Jimmy's and then Friday will
switch over back to the FM stick with the tournament games.
