the Taco Time Northwest Taco Time Time for something different

(00:25):
Now with Rick new Heisel, here's Softy and Dick.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
All right, we are live at Tom's watch Bar across
the street from Planet Pledge arena for the Cracking Ducks Man.
When these two teams get together, throw out their record books, baby,
their enemies, they hate each other. It's seven o'clock tonight,
hear the broadcast whatever and now and Mikey and the
whole crew.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Well, there's a how do you?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
How do you throw the record books out from last year?

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Year before?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Come on, Dick, stay with me here Palace day with
me joining us right now on the radio show. I
was going to introduce him by his given name, Rick
new Heisel of CBS Sports, but I think we all
now know he is no longer Rick new Heisl. He
is now Jerry's dad and he joins us right now
on the radio program.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Hey, Jerry's dad.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Before we get to that, I want to play a
clip here for you, and this is after the Penn
State UCLA game on Saturday. I want you to tell
me confirm that this is not Jerry's dad talking, but
Jerry himself Andrews rolling.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
But all things you learned from.

Speaker 5 (01:24):
Like I hate to say this, but I had never
practiced with the headset in terms of like the button
to talk to the quarterback. So there's like multiple times
during the game I'm calling to play, but the headset's
flipped up because I'm used to being a position coach,
and then all of a sudden, I'm pressing the wrong
part of the button trying to talk to him. Like
it was. It was a mess. Hopefully we'll get that
cleaned up by next week. But just one of those
days we just just all kind of fell into place.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
If I went back, amazing, if I went back Rick
and listen to an interview that we did when you
were thirty seven thirty eight years old as a coach
of the Huskies, you.

Speaker 6 (01:57):
Sounded exactly like that, and he looked exactly like.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
So is that you or is that him talking? Confirm it.

Speaker 7 (02:06):
That was a I high. So that's true. That was clearly.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
Clearly the content of that message means that we didn't
play button button, Who's got the button?

Speaker 7 (02:17):
Nearly enough?

Speaker 4 (02:18):
As children, it was a great day for jerring, a
great day for UCLA, fun for college football, and certainly
as parents, we all know how.

Speaker 7 (02:27):
Much fun it is to see your kids kind of
have that moment. So it was a thrill, a lot
of fun, a lot of fun.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
Where does that rank?

Speaker 3 (02:34):
I mean, because you're exactly right.

Speaker 6 (02:36):
I mean, when I watch my kids succeed, I'm way
more proud of that than anything I ever did.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
So where does that rank?

Speaker 6 (02:42):
As far as your best college football saturdays of your life?

Speaker 4 (02:47):
And and way more hands off the wheel? Right because
you have no control, you're just sitting there, you know,
watching it in real time and pulling as hard as
you can. It ranks right up there.

Speaker 7 (02:58):
I mean.

Speaker 4 (02:59):
And thankfully my wife decision was there. She got to
be in the stand. My son Jack is there, So
it was great fun. It was great fun. But now
onto Michigan State. You know, he's got to figure it
out now this week again because he's created now some
films that those Michigan State coaches will be watched and

(03:19):
now he's got to figure out how to counter it
and still be affected. But in credit to Tim Skipper,
the head coach, and Kevin Coyle, the defensive coordinator. Kevin
Coyle was coaching Syracuse as an analyst two weeks ago
and put together a defensive game plan that helped knock
off tense State. That's an incredible, incredible accomplishment.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Now I know that. Well, congrats to the entire plan. Coach.
That was just awesome to see that.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
His reaction getting carried off the field by the players
and coaches after that game was really really cool to see.
And then your reaction and studio losing your mind tearing
up on the air was awesome. So congrats, and that's
a memory you guys will take with you forever. But
I'll tell you what else is a memory is the
Husky's going to Maryland, fall behind twenty and finding a
way to win the game Saturday out at Colevinch Park

(04:07):
in Maryland. So put yourself in the shoes of those
coaches and players.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
How much can that come back?

Speaker 2 (04:12):
You think, springboard that locker room to bigger and better
things the rest of the year.

Speaker 4 (04:18):
Well, when you factor in the road woes from a
year ago, right, the nightmares on the different venues Rutgers
comes to mind, right, and you sit there and then
you're sitting there down twenty to nothing to Maryland, a
team that you were favored to see, and then all
of a sudden you find a way to come back.
I can just hear.

Speaker 7 (04:36):
Jet Fish in the aftermath of that game saying.

Speaker 4 (04:39):
That's who we are, that's who we are this year,
and we've got a standard now, We've got to play
to that.

Speaker 7 (04:45):
We owe it to each other to play to and
practice to.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
So I think it's going to be a great will
have been a great week of practice. I'm looking forward
to watching the Huskies play tomorrow night.

Speaker 6 (04:57):
How do you avoid the letdown after a win like
that come back home? Will the revenge factor that they
lost at Rutgers last year? Will that help kind of
mitigate the letdown a little bit?

Speaker 4 (05:09):
I think the fact that they now know it's inside
their dna to come from behind and win like that.
I think the fact that they know that separates them
from the memories of last year, and if the leadership
on that team will now make sure they hold everybody
to a standard each and every time they're getting ready
to play.

Speaker 7 (05:28):
As well as play.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
I think it's going to have great the results as
they go forward. So I think it was a critical,
critical win. Yeah, I would be able to win on
the road if you're going to be a premiere program.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
No doubt.

Speaker 4 (05:41):
All.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Rick new Hazel's with us and Rick, you know, we
spent a few minutes at the top there talking about
Jerry and the win over Penn State. But the opposite
side of that coin is James Franklin's future at Penn State.
And we asked you, I think a week ago if
you thought James Franklin was going to get fired, and
you said, no, how much do things change after what

(06:01):
we saw last Saturday at the Rose Ball for him
and his future?

Speaker 4 (06:05):
Well, here's the deal. Unless James Franklin wants to leave,
it's fifty million dollars, just under fifty million dollars to
watch them walk out the door. And I mean, this
is a terrible loss for Penn State. Inexcusable when you
look at it from a fans perspective, especially a fan
that's been contributing to the collective. It can't happen. And

(06:28):
yet to me, this is going to create some measure
of desperation. I feel this way about Texas too. These
two programs are picked to be one and two when
the season began. There's not enough desperation, and the leadership
in that locker room now has to look at each
other in the eye and say, we're coming.

Speaker 7 (06:44):
Back from this.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
And both those teams, given the factor in the big
ten in the SEC, have a schedule that will allow for,
you know, one of those seasons where you look back
and go, this is kind of what we needed. We
almost needed to get ourselves knocked in the and taste
a little our own blood and come back fighting. And
we're going to find out how much fight those two
programs out.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
Let's talk about that Texas game.

Speaker 6 (07:07):
They're actually favored by a point and a half in
the Red River rivalry against sixth rank Oklahoma. How do
you prepare if you're sark when you don't know if
John Mattier is going to play on the other side
or not. I mean, they're he's questionable, but at least
Oklahoma sounds like he's going to play.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
How do you prepare if you're sark?

Speaker 4 (07:26):
Well, I think you prepare for the offense that mature runs.
Whether it's Hawkins now going to have a second game,
if he's if he's available, Michael Hawkins who played last.

Speaker 7 (07:35):
Year, or if it's Matier.

Speaker 4 (07:36):
But at the end of the day, it's about it's
about us. If I'm Steve Sarkisian, there's one thing I'm
never going to do again, which is say we're one
of one hundred and thirty six teams and act like
you know everybody you tell who would have lost at
Ohio State and Florida. You're not one of one hundred
and thirty sixteens. You've got more resources than any program
in the country, and you need to act like it.

(07:57):
And then he needs to go in that locker room
we say that standard unacceptable, and who's going to hold
us to a higher one? And then see if that
defense will go out and play, because you're playing the
best unit of all the units so far in college football,
the defense of Oklahoma, it has been remarkably good, remarkably good.

Speaker 7 (08:14):
And if you can find a way to run.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
The ball and keys stay on the field and put
the pressure on it. Injured or at least you know
Rusky John McTeer or Rusky Michael Hawkins you've got a
chance to win that game.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
You think Oklahoma's defense is better than Ohio States.

Speaker 4 (08:34):
I think Oklahoma's defense has been more explosive than Ohio States.

Speaker 7 (08:38):
But I think Matt Patricia is the assistant coach of
the Year right now.

Speaker 4 (08:42):
He'd be my Broyles Award winner just the way. And
I add to that Ryan Day and the offense because
I think they're giving up some you know, shots down
the field because they're wanting to pay complementary football, which
we saw in Husky Stadium. I think they're brilliant together
and they're now in the number one team in the land.

Speaker 6 (08:59):
And buy us your big game on CBS Indiana, Oregon.
I'm hearing a lot of handicappers right now saying Kurt
Sidnetti and Indiana sneaky dog in Austin.

Speaker 4 (09:10):
Do you agree with the sneaky dog call? I think
this is a fascinating game because everywhere you look, these
are top ten teams, whether you're looking at defense, whether
you're looking at offense, whether you're looking at quarterbacks, whether
you're looking at run pass on either side of the ball,
up and across the board. I think at the end
of the day, I'm going to Lean, Oregon just because

(09:32):
I think they're faster, and it's also going to be
in clement. Now Indiana beat Illinois, I think.

Speaker 7 (09:38):
In the rain.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
So I don't know that that's the biggest thing that's
going to be a problem for them, but I just
think the Ducks are a hair faster. I'm going to
Lean Oregon there.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
Do you think Bill Belichick finishes the year at Chapel Hill,
And if he does finish the year, what kind of
odds would you give us on Bill Belichick coaching Carolina
in Week one next season.

Speaker 4 (10:01):
I think he does finish the year. I think the
university is wildly disappointed in what's happened. I think there's
at least watching the effort on the field, it looked
like a little bit of a mail in the fact
that Bill Belichick left during a bye week go on
a little vacation. At least it's been reported that he did.

(10:22):
That would never have happened at the Patriots. I think
they're going to get through the year because it would
be too embarrassing to do otherwise. But I will be
shocked if he's the head coach there next year.

Speaker 6 (10:33):
I watched the first half of that game, Rick, And
you're right. I mean, not only was it just a laugher,
it looked like they were poorly coached. I mean there
were defensive players completely out of alignment on every play
against Clemson.

Speaker 7 (10:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
I didn't get a chance to watch it closely. I
did see what looked like loafs. You know, as a coach,
he used to put on tape the loafs so that
you could show it in your position meeting and say.

Speaker 7 (11:00):
This is unacceptable.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
There were a death tape would have been a long epeuh.
And I also go back to the TCU opener game
where it was just simple pin and pull stuff in
the run game, where they were blocking down with the
tight end pulling the tackle and they never made an
adjustment and it was they were dashing them. And that's
not Bill Belichick. He doesn't let that happen. And yet

(11:21):
I think he's all too it's all too easy for
him to let it happen. This year, he's given his
sons a chance to be uh, you know, got great opportunities,
but it's it doesn't look anything BELICHICKI in any of our.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
Minds, no, no question.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
All right, hey, listen before we get your tackle time
pick of the week, and I got to apologize to
you because normally we start the radio show win or lose,
reminding people what you did the previous game.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
We didn't do well.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
And there's only one rule we skip that when your
son wins a football game the week before against Penn State.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
Fair enough, all right enough, that's the only tip.

Speaker 7 (11:58):
I didn't you notice. I didn't asize yet. I know
that I didn't get on yet, and I.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Feel bad because you're won with Pittsburgh last week and
you're off the schneide. But Rick, just real quick, like
just like thirty seconds, because we've got to get your
pick here in a minute. Give us a take on
this Ruggers team that we'll see tomorrow. They're three and two,
but the two big ten losses to Iowa and Minnesota,
they were leading with five minutes to go in both
games and could not finish the deal.

Speaker 4 (12:23):
Yeah, they're a little different than they were maybe in
the last couple of years with Greg Ciano as.

Speaker 7 (12:30):
Their head coach.

Speaker 4 (12:30):
They're not leaning on the running game. They're leading on
the quarterback who transferred from Minnesota, this kid Athan calais
manas right, and there they threw it all over the
yard against Iowa, so if it's gonna be but I
think that plays into the hands of the Husky defense.
And I think I don't know what the weather report
is tomorrow night. It's kind of raining here in Eugene,

(12:51):
so I'm wondering if you might get some of the
same precipitation. But I liked a game that's gonna be
a lot of throwing against the hut I think their
corners match up, and so I'm gonna see I like
the Huskies in a revenge game here on Friday night.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Yeah, all right, real quick, Taco Time Pick of the week.
You're in the win column with Pittsburgh a week ago.
Good work on that. They blew him out and made
it easy for us. Who do you like this week
for your Taco Time Pick of the week.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
You know, Jake Dickers left Washington State to go to
Wake Forest, and they two weeks ago nearly knocked off
Georgia Tech. Probably should have. There was a terrible non
call in an off side against Georgia Tech. They didn't
call it. He hit won last week. He's coming back
to the specific Northwest. He'll know all about Oregon State.

(13:41):
They're only a two and a half point pick Robbie Ashford.
If it's inclement day, Robbie Ashford is a running quarterback.
I'm gonna lean the Demon Deacons. I'll lay the two
and a half and we'll see how the Beavers can
hang in there with them.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
I love it. Great stuff.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
Coach, congrats again on the big moment for the family.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
Go get him and we'll talk in a week.

Speaker 7 (13:59):
Man. Thanks Rick, Thanks guys. I appreciate y'all.
