(00:24):
Now with Rick new Heisel, Here's SOFTI and Dick.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
I don't know how many times my nearly sixteen year
old son comes to me and says, Dad, can you
get me a soft burrito at Taco Tom. He just
does it all the time. It's literally its favorite fast
food place to go to. It's Rick new Heisel's as well.
How you doing, coach?
Speaker 3 (00:47):
I am wonderful, Dick. I hope that your son gets
his wish. You provide the force the soft burrito that
everybody craves.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
And it is truly remarkable watching him eat it because
in less than a minute it is gone.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
You can't imagine there's even any tasting going. Yeah, exactly right.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
You know all about having an athletic sun man and
how well they can eat.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Three of them, three of them? Yeah, it doesn't spend
much time in the gullet as they say.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Well, Rick, and I know Jackson was talking me off
the phone or off the air about what kind of
weather we're having here. We're truly having dog weather right now.
We're having husky dog weather. And it got me thinking, like,
how did you recruit to this? Like when when kids
were here in November, December, January, and it's dark at
(01:41):
eight in the morning, it's dark again at four o'clock
in the afternoon, Like, what did you just say to
kind of ease their fears and tell me, yeah, it's
really not like this.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
All the year, we spent a lot of time inside.
If the weather, if the weather wasn't going to be
a sales point, especially for kids that were coming up
from California, then what we would do is we'd find
ways to spend times inside and you know, just create
this atmosphere that was you know, obviously it's not hard
(02:12):
to sell Washington and its history and all the different
things that go on there, but you didn't want them
to feel cold. Uh, So we would be inside as
much as we could be, and then if we got
nice weather, then we were on the boat from you know,
the shores of Lake Washington right there at the Husky
Stadium across to where I lived over there at Maidenbower Bay,
(02:35):
and and that was great. And I remember Sean Cody
who ended up going to USC but he he jumped
off my pier into Lake Washington saying this place is awesome.
I thought we were getting Sean Cody, and unfortunately Edojeron
got his miss in him after that and we didn't
(02:56):
get it quite finished off. But if it was dark
and not not conducive to the sunshine, guys, we were inside.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Rick new Hazel joining US and coach. The College Football
Poll has been released. The Huskies are rightfully ranked. And
you know, I think fans of the big time non
conference September matchups got good news when they saw this
first poll, because you know, you had that massive Ohio
State Texas game, and both those teams are in great shape.
OSU's number one Texas looks like they're the one team
(03:30):
that could potentially make the playoffs even with three losses,
because the committee does not appear to be holding that
OSU loss against them. So will this be a catalyst
for more of those big time interconference matchups in the
first month of this season.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
I think we have to get to a place where,
whether it's the committee or not, that we make those
games a reality. Certainly the fans deserve them. The networks
who are spending the Bookoo bucks for this, for this
opportunity to bring that to the homes across the country
(04:04):
deserve it. And I just think we got to do
it now. I understand the commissioners are sitting there, well,
you've got to pay for more, you know, if we're
going to enhance the product, then we should get more money.
And maybe that will be the case. I know that's
what Tony Petiti from the Big Ten office as the commissioner,
wants to do. But we'll just wait and see. But
there's no question that the non conference games need to
(04:26):
be bolstered. And you know what, I also think this
is a fun race. Even though no one was ranked
in the top twenty five from the group of five
or group of six, depending on how you look at it,
I think it's a fun race is to see which
team gets access to the twelve team field, because I
think that's also a fund race for those fans of
those programs to follow.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Absolutely, let's talk about two of the most high profile
coaches in college football, and neither one of them are
doing very well. Let's start with our old friend prime time.
He has been outscored on one hundred and five to
twenty four in the last two games. What is going
on in your old stopping grounds of Boulder.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Well, listen, he doesn't have the high flying act of
Shaduur to Travis right, Henry's off to the NFL. Should
do is off to the NFL And that act, that
high wire act that we watched and marveled at, is
no longer part of the story. And remember that Dion.
(05:28):
First of all, I had tremendous health issues over the summer,
and we're all thrilled that he's feeling better and hopefully
can continue to coach. But he doesn't go off the road.
He doesn't go on the road to recruit. He stays home,
he doesn't phone calls. He's busy doing prime stuff rather
than coach stuff. And I don't know how you survive
(05:49):
doing that, Lane Kiffen. Even if it's a transfer guy,
he is not a high school guy. But even transfer guys,
he's on the road. The kid that is making all
the news that Trinidad Shambliss at quarterback there. He went
and recruited at Farris State, a small school in Division
two school in Michigan. He went and spent time with
(06:11):
that guy. If you're not willing to do that, you're
just making phone calls and doing the recruiting off of YouTube,
you're going to be in harm's way. And that basically
is what's going on at Colorado. I don't know how
much longer Dion's going to be in this business. I
think Dion with with the excitement waning and the product waning,
(06:32):
I would not be shocked if Dion isn't part of
game day next to his buddy Nick Saban next year.
That wouldn't shock me at all. And if that were
to happen, I will tell you that my biggest guess
would be Pat Fitzgerald then to be the coach at
Colorado because Gary Barnett calls those games as the color
analyst in the radio side of things. Gary Barnett would
(06:54):
push hard for Pat to get that opportunity.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
That would be interesting, very very interesting. And then the
other one that's that's having a very rough time this
year is Dabbo. I mean, has he lost his team there?
Was that viral video of him on the sidelines and
he was just the rating guys. He went nuts on Saturday.
They've lost two in a row and they're three and
five on the season.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
There's seasons over. There's there's no other way to explain
this than that that there's a chemistry problem at Clemson
because everybody in the country, myself included, had them in
the top five. Given all the returning players, given a
quarterback that had the experience the club Nick comes into
the season with, and given you know, the Dabbo you
(07:38):
know resume, it's just not working. There's got to be
something missing. And I remember years ago, Steve Mariucci came
to me, he had a pro day there at the
University of Washington. He was really excited about Marcus Gujos
Sopo entering the NFL. We were sitting there talking. He said,
you know, these jobs ought to be like political offices.
(07:59):
You you run, you get elected, you get four years.
If you get you know, if you're successful in the
four years, you get reelected and you get another four
years in office. But after that should be term limits.
We're done because the expectations for Dabo after the first
eight years of his run at Clemson were through the
roof and there's really difficult to get there. I think
(08:22):
it wouldn't shock me, and this is another one of
those out there type predictions. Wouldn't shock me that Dabo
walks from this job. Clemson's paying him twelve million bucks.
That is an inordinate amount of money for a team
that's making forty million from their television deal. That's half
of what they're getting in the Big Ten. And the
(08:42):
sec the sister school to Clemson campus is almost identical,
the philosophies of the education almost identical is Auburn. That
to me is where Davo should go, and Davo should
start again and see if he can build something as
special as he built at Clemson.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
That's another big, big opening there now with that opening.
But you know, when it comes to these openings, you
mentioned Lane before, Lane Kiffin before, and he's probably the
hottest candidate out there right now. Talk to me about
being the hot coaching name twenty five years ago versus
today's college football. Who are you talking to? What questions
are you asking ads when you interview for a job
(09:23):
in two thousand versus when you interview for a job
in twenty twenty five in the nil Eric is it's
got to be it's got to be a different beast, right.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
Well, there's no question that the issues are different today.
But really the biggest problem for Lane Kiffin to take
either Florida or to take LSU, the two schools that
are rumored to be very much in the Lane sweepstakes.
The problem is he's going to be in the college
football playoffs and for him to do justice to the
(09:55):
two jobs that he would be considering to pick one
of those and not be there for or early signing day,
not be there for the opening of the transfer portal,
and to then say, well, I'll augment the billy that
I missed in those deals by bringing players of my
own and what he would be doing to Ole miss.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
To do that that takes some absolute stones of not
being able to look back and say, hey, these guys
were really good to me and I've just absolutely twisted the.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
Knife into them. Because the calendar would take him, especially
if he gets past that New Year's Day game, the
calendar would take him, you know, all the way into
the January tenth day, which is almost the end of
the transfer portal, where all the transactions have been made,
how do you build a team because there's not a
second transfer portal. We don't have that spring one any longer.
(10:50):
So I don't see Lane moving. I see Lane stand
right there at ole Miss. I think the folks at
ole Miss will make him a handsome offer that is
very difficult to step away from, and he'll live happily
ever after there in Hotty Toddy Land.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
Well, I can hear folks driving around right now saying, well, yeah,
but Rick, that's exactly what Kailin did to us here
in Seattle. But you're saying, maybe it's a different situation
because Calen at least had this window.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
There was a second transfer portal, And I think Caylen
de Boor would tell you that was an absolute nightmare.
I think he will tell you that getting there, and
basically he was at the behest of the players. They
owned him. Rather than him having this say with them,
he was having to say and do whatever it took
to keep people on campus. And I think even as
(11:37):
he got to that first year, the culture was really
something that he had to embrace rather than him create.
And I think coaches are wary of that because coaches
talked to one another.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
What kind of game do we see at Camp Randall
on Saturday. That's a struggling offense the Huskies are going
up against.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
Well, if if if Dante Moore is kind of an
opportunity to see into the future. You saw what happened
when he got hurt. You ended up being in a
slugfest where you're just trying to run the ball against
the one thing Wisconsin does well this year to stop
the run. That's a Loopvickl principle. Right, So this is
going to be about the quarterback situation at Washington, just
(12:24):
showing off and doing what this kid has done all
season long. And if he gets out and gets loose,
which I think that he can do against the Badger defense,
then I think all things will go well for the Huskies.
And that's my expectation. I don't know that it'll be
a flashy win. I just think you get your win,
(12:44):
you get home, and you've got Purdue the following week,
and then you turn your attentions to both UCLA and
Oregon because if you win out, I think you're in
the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
I think you're right. It sets up to be an awesome,
awesome night day depending on when the game is in
three weeks against Oregon, potentially, all right, coach, Taco Time
pick of the week time in honor of my son,
I'm going with the number one. That's what he likes
the best, the soft, the soft taco, and we'll do
a little fully leaded cherry coke and we'll get it.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Get it going.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
So, Taco Time pick of the week. You lost on
wake Forest plus the ten and a half. They got
hammered by FSU. But that's all right, yours against hammered.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
I was gonna say thank you for not bringing that
up at the top of the show. Yeah, you got
it in. You reminded me that I took one on
the ship.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
Yeah, well you can get back to five, buttter, No,
you get the six and six this week if with.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
A victory here we go. All right. So the number
ten team in the land, as we heard from the
Committee of the on Tuesday night, is Notre Dame. Notre
Dame was less than impressive against Boston College. They realized
their situation is tenuous given that Texas and Oklahoma are
(13:58):
behind them outside looking in. Knowing that an ACC team
and a group of five teams have to be included
in the field, so they're going to have to be impressive.
They're a twenty four and a half point favorite over
Navy at home. Maybe just got bludgeoned by North Texas
and it wasn't mess to Maker the quarterback that did it.
It was the running back. And with Jeremiah Love and
(14:20):
Jadavian Price, I'm going to go. I'm going to go
Notre Dame. I'll lay the twenty four and a half.
I think they have to be impressive at home. Let
me have the Irish and I think we'll have a
nice evening celebrating all things that are leprochron Green.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
I love it all right, Notre Dame minus the twenty
four and a half against the Naval Academy. Gotta get
it done in South bend Rick always a pleasure. We'll
talk to you next week, all right, Dick kay Karna
