Speaker 1 (00:00):
Live from the R and R Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio.
Now back to Softie and Dick on your home for
the Huskies and the Creek in Sports Radio ninety three
point three KJR FM are.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Getting closer, boys and girls, the matchup hueye. Everybody's been
waiting for Washington Weber State Husky Stadium two weeks for
Saturday eight o'clock kickoff, four o'clock pre game right here
on ninety three three kJ RFM. And I don't know
anybody anybody who is more excited for that week one
matchup than our friend Rick new Heisl who joined us
(00:36):
right now on the radio show.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
How are you mad?
Speaker 4 (00:40):
I am wonderful. How are you Hopefully? You've had a
great summer, and I know that you don't need to
be wrapped up for yet another Husky season, So let's
just get to it. And by the way, if you're
looking for somebody who's more excited, look no further than
Will Rogers. Bill Rogers is fired up. I've lot taking
some snaps the dogs.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
I can tell you this that Will Rogers.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Rick is going to do a weekly show with us
every Monday, courtesy of Montlake Future, starting the week after
the weaper State game. So fired up to have Will
joining us on the program every every week. It's just
a new era where we can have guys on the
air doing radio shows and pay these kids.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
In a new era for you, Dub and you tas.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Moving on to the Big twelve, Wazuo and Oregon State
in the PAC two. I know last time we talked
there was a lot of kind of unknown, a lot
of movement too much for my blood. Does it feel
to you like things are starting to calm down or
is it still as chaotic as it was six months ago.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
Well, it's as chaotic as it was six months ago.
And the wheel will not stop turning now, but it will.
It will suspend movement here for the season, which is
our favorite time of year. So we're going to enjoy
immensely a round robin for twelve spots at the playoff table.
And I think it's going to be unbelievable and we're
(01:59):
going to look at ourselves in the mirror and say,
why didn't we do this to start Why didn't we
have twelve spots to begin with, because had we, we'd
still be talking about a PAC twelve. And I think
this is going to be a lot of fun, and
especially in the month of November, it's going to put
some pressure on those playoff committee personnel and those spots
(02:21):
ten through fifteen. It's going to be wild and wooly
down those last couple of weeks.
Speaker 5 (02:27):
Rick, with the Huskies going to the Big ten, I
just look and I say, Okay. In addition to those challenges,
you're also dragging arguably the three toughest competitors over the
pick a period of time for Washington it would be SC,
UCLA and Oregon in some order, right, And that's exactly
who's coming with them to the conference. If you were
(02:49):
coaching the Huskies, what would be top of mind in
terms of your prioritizing and the most important things to
accomplish to fulfill the challenge and the challenge of what
the Huskies have in front of them.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
Well, I think it's a great point you make, because
while recruiting has become national and it's been who can
pay the most, I think when we get our arms
around this house settlement, and maybe a couple of years
beyond that, when we actually negotiate with the players as
a collective body, whether it's negotiation or whether it's bargaining
(03:28):
if they become employees one way or the other. We're
going to have some arms around this recruiting. And then
the more regional games, those games against the LA schools
and certainly Oregon are going to become really meaningful for
the Huskies as they always have been for recruiting stake,
you know, for staking your claim in the state of Washington,
(03:50):
for staking your claim in the Pacific Northwest, or at
least the West Coast. It just will make sense that
that will be back in form, especially when I think
the scholarships become more codified. I think they'll they'll end
up becoming will have scholarships, and then we'll have scholarships
(04:11):
plus one plus two plus three based on the level
of player, and I think the salary cap will have
some limitations on each roster as to how many of
those other kinds you can have.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Yeah, well, Rick new Heisl's with us, and Rick, I
gotta tell you, man, there's one school I'm concerned about
the most moving to the Big Ten, and it's for me.
You're Alma Mater, Because what I saw out of the
Rose Bowl last year was a fan base at a
school that just did not have an extreme amount of
passion for college football. Now you're asking UCLA to compete
financially with the Big Ten schools and get the fan
(04:44):
base fired up to donate to the collectives. I mean,
am I nuts and saying that UCLA is facing a
real uphill battle at least football wise, in the Big Ten.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
There's an old saying, and I'm not sure who said it,
but I've certainly echoed it that you what you emphasize,
and you better not have expectations that you're not willing
to finance. UCLA has been in a downward spiral financially
(05:15):
for the last decade, and because of it, they have
put themselves in harm's way competing with their fellow schools
that make football a priority. They certainly try to make
basketball priority. But when we've went to the collective, the
collective personnel, those alums well healed enough to help UCLA
(05:38):
have not been plentiful, doesn't I'm not trying to pope,
you know, at the ones who've been participating, but they've
not been plentiful, and I can understand why what are
they getting back for it? So to me, UCLA has
to really look at themselves in the mirror and decide
are we going to finance this or are we going
to just keep moving coaches along? And I know that
(06:00):
sounds like, you know, crying over spilt milk, because I
was one of those coaches that they moved along. But
it when Chip Kelly leaves the job for a coordinator job,
you can tell that there's some real issues there. And
while Deshaun Foster is a wonderful bruin and I know
he's gung ho and I got my fingers crossed my
son's on his staff, I wanted to go, well, you
(06:23):
hired somebody that has never done it ever before, and
now you still haven't given him the resources to fight
with the Organs, with the Washington's, with the USC's. Heck,
they took your defensive coordinator. Danton Lynn was the defensive
coordinator at UCLA last year, and UCLA barely offered him
(06:43):
half of what USC was offering. And they're in the
same conference getting the same share. That's just tough pill
to swallow. But it speaks to the deficit that Martin
Jarman's facing right now, and they've got to figure out
a way around that. Otherwise, like you said, it's going
to be Bill Amen, Rick I agree with that.
Speaker 5 (07:03):
Washington fans are also interested in in any substantial cheating
that Michigan may have done, obviously because we lost to
him in the National Championship. Uh, you know, is it
appears to to some maybe that Harba just stayed, you know,
one step ahead of the posse. Of course, he was
defiant and denying any cheating. But what's your take on that?
(07:24):
And and and answer this as well? It would it
be reasonable to have coaches have some percentage of their
salary put away in an earnest, money that the coach
could decide about. But then after a year or two
or three or something, when when when you're clean clear
of of of any violations, then maybe you get your money.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Is something?
Speaker 5 (07:46):
Is there some template that it would make sense to
you in that regard?
Speaker 3 (07:49):
But what what?
Speaker 5 (07:50):
What's your your take on what went down in nan Arbor?
Speaker 4 (07:54):
Well, Jim certainly is sticking to his guns that nothing
was He said, I'm not going to apologize here because
I did nothing wrong. But he also is a guy
that never turned over his phone. If he didn't do
anything wrong, why you're not turning over your phone and
letting the authorities, you know, decide whether or not anything
(08:15):
inappropriate was done. The Connor Stallion's thing with all the
video and the ability for a lower level staff member
to be in constant conversation with the play callers lends
itself for anybody who's ever been around play callors on
game day that they had something really beneficial to offer.
There's no way he's having those kind of conversations with
(08:37):
a guy who's got to make his careers on the
line for making a good call if he's not getting
to have that kind of input unless what he's giving
is absolute gold, and that's on video. He doesn't take
rocket science to figure that out. So something was a miss.
Jim has held fast that he has nothing to do
(09:00):
with it. Connor Stallions actually said as much that Jim
was going to be kept clean of it. Sounded like
it was a way for him to say mia cope
or say he was not involved. And the yeah, at
the end of the day, he can walk away and
he's just as much ado about nothing with Jim Harbaugh.
(09:21):
I do think, oh by having him back to celebrate
on August thirty first, with that celebration of the National Championship,
that the NCAA might be feeling a little bit provoked here,
and I think Sharon Moore might end up paying a
stiffer penalty than maybe otherwise he would have, because I
(09:43):
think they're going to be angry that they're kind of
Michigan's kind of putting this in their face, and I
just don't think you want to poke that bear.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Well, they got the greatest name for a college quarterback ever,
could be replacing McCarthy an Orgy, the Orgy kid, Alex Orgy.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
You're going to play quarterback for Michigan.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
But Rick, before you go, I gotta tell you, man,
there's been a lot made about You Dub and their
roster getting gutted. They only got two guys back really
in Carson Bruner and Elijah Jackson as far as starters,
But Michigan's only got six starters back from that team and.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Their biggest their biggest web.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
But I thought was Jim Harbaugh as their head coach
and what he meant to that sideline? Am I crazy
in thinking that Sharon Moore coming to You Dub in
Week six and getting an automatic win against You Dub?
Speaker 3 (10:28):
Maybe not so fast?
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Well, I think Michigan's going to be pretty stout. They've
got a couple of defensive tackles back that you know,
been the envy of anybody in the country. Right The
Mason Graham kid is as good a player as there
is in the United States as we start the season,
so I think. And if you look at McCarthy's numbers
from a year ago, he had two hundred plus less
(10:54):
attempts than Michael Pennix as they went to that National
championship game. Both played games. He had over two hundred
passes less. So they can lean on running the football.
Shrill Moore is an offensive line coach by trade. You
know he's going to want to do that. Donovan Edwards
is coming back. They've got a nice looking offensive line,
so I believe that and they'll be effective. I don't
(11:17):
a ten win team. I would say probably closer to eight,
but I do think that they'll be a tough out
for anybody.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Gotcha, all right? Listen?
Speaker 2 (11:25):
Great stuff, And I think I can officially announce I
haven't cleared this with you totally, but I knowing you
you're good for it. We have met your gigantic financial demands.
Our people have met with your people, and we have
negotiated for you to appear once again with the Chuck
and Bucks Show and us on Thursdays on our show,
I'll courtesy of Taco Times.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
So glad you're back for another year.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
Cannot imagine college football without you on KJR men.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
Nothing like having a fiesta with Taco Time once again.
It's fun to talk dog football. What a year it
was last year. We're going to enjoy the fish Bowl too.
We're going to enjoy it. Just to sit back and
let this all soak in. It's gonna be fun.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
I love it, all right. We'll talk in a couple
of weeks. All right, pal, appreciate this.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
Coach, See you, my friend, take care.
