Speaker 1 (00:00):
The position coach for Nick emn Wari, the secondary coach
at South Carolina Tory, and Gray is with us. Call
again from Columbia, South Carolina live right here on ninety
three three KJRFM coach at Softy and former NFL quarterback
hum Mellon.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
How are you man?

Speaker 3 (00:15):
I'm doing great?

Speaker 2 (00:16):
How you got good? Good? It's great to have you
on the radio show. Man.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
So a lot of us did not know a lot
about Nick until it got drafted by.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
The Seahawks on Friday.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
So why don't you, first of all just give us
the view from thirty five thousand feet When you hear
the name Nick even Warie, what goes through your mind?
Tell us about the player and the and the person
that we're getting up here in Seattle.

Speaker 4 (00:39):
The player you're getting, I'll tell you back when I
was coaching at Virginia Tech. You guys all familiar with
Cam Tansllor. So I coach Cam Chancellor at Virginia Tech.
And when I will recruiting Nick Evenworri out of high school,
I'm like, man, you only get a cam Chancer probably
once in.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Your career at that size.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
And you know that that factually a defensive back and
and then then I'm I get to South Carolina and
Nicki min Worriy comes to camp. He's playing linebacker and
he runs this crazy forty time and he's doing all
these amazing numbers and he and he's working out at linebacker.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
I didn't even work him out at the camp.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
And then I was like, man, with that forty time, man,
I just want to batpel him and see if he
can play dB. So I batpedaled him once and he
turned caught the ball and I'm like, no, there's no
way this guy is sashed can be a defensive back.
I'm like, that's all I need to see, just one rep.
And so you're getting a generational type guy as far
as a body type. And it's not like back in

(01:39):
nineteen eighty two with your with your fooltures and and
and those big staties they used to have. They used
to just play down at it, which which you know,
he's a different breed, you know, like I said, it's
Cam Chancellor and he's actually faster, same size and all
those things.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
The type of person you're getting.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
Is a is a fun loving, very charismatic, charismic, charismatic
individual man. He loves to have fun. But when Nick
flips the switch and it's time to get serious with football,
that's that's what Nick's able to concentrate in and hone
in and do well.

Speaker 5 (02:15):
You talk about the comparison there, You're You're the You're
the guy that everybody wants to hear from. So make
the comparison. That's who you thought he'd be, Cam chancesor
as you recruited him. Now tell us after you've coached him,
you've coached them both. Tell us ways where you say, man,
they're almost identical in this way, But then give us

(02:37):
a couple of attributes where you think that emun Worry
is clearly different than Cam Chanceller.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
I'll tell you from a football competitiveness standpoint, playing physical standpoint,
and football like you standpoint, they're very very similar. And
so I'm y'all, uh, you're not gonna catch me saying
what what Cam's going get pissed at me and be like, hey, man,
Nick is better than Cam or Cam is better than Nick,
But I can't say that Nick they're the same guy,

(03:09):
with Nick having more explosive forty speed, more explosive vertical speed,
vertical jump speed, which the number that to come by
say those things, but honestly, other than that man very
very similar attributes and in a lot of respects.

Speaker 5 (03:25):
We're visiting with Tory and Gray who coached emonn Worrie
in college, and as well as Cam Chancellor and coach.
I'm gonna share with you in the observation I made,
and then you speak freely in your response. And I
watched every tackle for Nick this season, and I went
in kind of Cam Chancellor. I don't wear players jerseys

(03:50):
to games, but if I had to, I'd wear thirty
one to a seat game. That's what I think of
Cam Chancellor. And I was expecting just a wee bit
more violence from Emon from Nick in the sense of
like when Cam Chancer, when when the running back would
come back I'm talking about to see days, Chancer would

(04:12):
take him up in the through his chest, you know eyes.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
He was looking to make an enforcement hit.

Speaker 5 (04:19):
There was a couple there was a few times where
I was expecting that kind of of hit from Nick
and he went a little lower, a little lower on the.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Legs, you know that.

Speaker 5 (04:27):
Then I was expecting a little more violence. Now is
my expectation unreasonable or or or just kind of common?

Speaker 2 (04:34):
In that regard.

Speaker 4 (04:36):
It, hello, your if your expectations were hired, and then
I can't argue with with that part and and and
at that because I didn't get to watch Cam on
the on the pro level, I know he what to
capitate the capitate you. But I've seen Nick from a freshman.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Do some things.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
His first tackle as a freshman, it was a fourth
and one play and he hit this running back at
the line and the guy didn't go forward and he
stopped them in I've seen Nick versus Georgia, maybe not
last year film, but I mean hit guys and just
just like wow, man, it's you know, this dude shouldn't
be this physical or whatnot.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
So it's in there.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
If it didn't happen last year, I'm telling you it's
in there. And and I know how special Cam was
in that department, but Nick doesn't lack for those things.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
And if he feels.

Speaker 4 (05:23):
Short off some of those typlest sorts on some of
your expectations, and I can't argue with your observation, but
I've seen I know it's in there.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
You know, I'm just saying I know it's in there.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Well, Nick, even Warry's position coach at South Carolina. Torrian
Gray is with us on on the radio show, and
you know, again, when he gets drafted, coach, you just
go right to the combined results and see that he
just crushed the combine. He was like number one in
every major category except for the forty and I think
he may have been number two and that in that
in that category at the combine. So, what is it

(05:53):
that that you think really physically sets him apart? Is
it his speed? Is it his his ability to cut?
Is it his quickness, his footwork, his eyes, his hands,
his tackling ability. What is it specifically about his game
that you think attracted the Seahawks enough to make him
a second round pick.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
Oh, the Seahawks are smarter than a lot of teams.
I give them credit for that. And and what I
mean is like when people see your sixty three two
and twenty plus pound guy, the natural tendency is to say, oh,
he's a box guy. And I hear guys, and I've
seen some of the commentaries out there, and you know

(06:37):
Nick Stagan says it on the damn Draft They oh, yeah,
he's a good box safety. Well, you haven't watched Nick,
because he's more than a box safety. He can play football,
he can play away from the ball, and some of
the interceptions he made, this interception he made it against
Kentucky as a junior, the interception he made against Clemson
as a junior, No other safety in the country can
make those type of plays. So he's got some wow

(07:01):
factorability and can make plays on the ball better than
you give them credit for. And for the numbers he
put up at the combine. And like I said, I
think to see I just will say the Seahawks are
a lot smarter than than a lot of other teams.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
I love that making them what they took.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
It just going back on the Cam chance or comparison
and the fact that you coach both these guys.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Do you know if Cam and Nick have ever spoken?
Have you ever connected these two together?

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Nah? No, I haven't. I haven't.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
I don't know if they've spoken since he's gotten drafted
or whatnot, But I've never connected them together. And my my,
my biggest compliment I always gave nickas man, you remind
me of Cam and and and you know, like I
say it, you know, he's just got got some more
speed and those type attributes, and those are the great
biggest difference.

Speaker 5 (07:47):
Yeah, excuse me, Yeah, those are great traits to have.
I want to compare Nick to another safety. As you know,
Mike McDonald had been the defensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens.
They drafted a safety out of note name Kyle Hamilton.
Now Hamilton might be, if anything, a little taller at six',
four not nearly the athlete That nick, was but you,

(08:10):
know a span h in the ninety eight. Percentile so
we here In seattle are, saying, okay is there is
there aspects Of hamilton's game that we see in him and.
Worry you, know things like the ability to on third
and medium to play a tight. End he's got the
length to play a tight, end man to, man those
type of, things the length and what have you uh

(08:32):
to to the extent that you can, comment do you
see Maybe nick fitting in as an all around jack
of all trades playmaker the Way Kyle hamilton did with The.

Speaker 4 (08:41):
Ravens, Okay, so in all, FAIRNESS i didn't See Kyle
hamilton play At Notre, day AND i hadn't seen him
play with The Baltimore. Ravens BUT i can speak On nick's.
ASSETS i could when you put a receiver in the. Slot,
NOW i know the pro in the college game is
gonna be different as far as the guys they'd be

(09:03):
going on, once BUT i felt very confident With nick
on a wide receiver in a in a college game
and a slide from a press from a press. Material
SO i would think if those guys are asking him
to cover tight, ends as long as he's playing with
great technique and, LEVERAGE i WOULD i would, say he,
would you, know do a do a great job in
that respect and give coaches the flexibility to put him

(09:25):
in those situations in.

Speaker 5 (09:26):
Excel, so if you're gonna play man to man and
and now you got one play to win the, game all,
right and you know and you know you're gonna play,
man would you rather Have nick lined up on the
tight end on a big, receiver small, receiver just just
just where do you feel more comfortable he'd get the?

Speaker 4 (09:46):
Win and WHY i feel very confident he's on a tight. End,
now if it's, technique if he's confidence in his, technique
you know he'll he'll have a chance against a big
receiver because obviously he's got the linked and if his
technique is, correct he'll have he'll have a great chance
to make a play on the. Ball, now if his
techniques is, inconsistent because you, know when you're talking about

(10:10):
the margin arrow against guys on that, level, yeah he's
going to get going to lose to AN nfl wide.
Receiver so you, know if he's in the right headspace
with his technique and it's, FUNDAMENTALS i would like his
chances against a wide, out a, taller bigger wide out
who's probably not going to be crazy shifty away from.
HIM i do like his chances, there and LIKE i,
say tight, END i think that should definitely be something

(10:31):
that he should be able to to win the majority
of those.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
BATTLES i love.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
It.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
Well a couple more minutes With Torrian, gray who Is
nicky Man warre's position coach At South carolina safety at The,
seahawks gott in the second. Round so you, know there's
a there's kind of this laundry list of standard questions
we like to ask coaches and draft picks after they
get selected coach by The, seahawks and one of them, is, hey,
look you want to have a long career in THE, nfl,

(10:54):
right we want nick to have a long ten year
decade plus career in THE, Nfl i'll get a second con,
track get a third, contract and be A seahawk for.
Life so to do, THAT i, mean you know his
strengths and you know his. Weaknesses what would you tell
him in a private, Moment, hey, man you want to
survive in THE, nfl these are the things that you've
got to start working on and get.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
Better act, Tonight.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
Nico played ten.

Speaker 4 (11:21):
Years if he if he does not get content or
if he doesn't think he's making it, like always be,
green if he's always green and, Growing nickel played for
a long. Time If nick gets content and just rest
upon his, lowells like anybody with great, talent you're not
gonna get better and you're gonna leave yourself susceptible to
not maximize that talented the amount of years that he

(11:42):
could play on the next.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
Level so was there stay? Green and in all, RESPECTS
i would, say.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
Well stay?

Speaker 5 (11:49):
Green that is an Awesome Now i've never heard. That
i'm Gonna i'm gonna steal that from. You but was
there ever time where you thought you had to give
him a little? Proud was there ever a time where
you thought he was getting a little too? Content?

Speaker 3 (12:01):
Oh, yeah there's there's a time period that that he.
HAD i would say sophomore year as a Freshman All.

Speaker 4 (12:06):
American then sophomore, year there was a time frame WHERE
i thought we got away from some of our fundamentals
and being disciplined on some of the, things and you
give up some. Plays and then if you're honest enough
to have the conversation with, him and he responded the right.
Way he finished the SEASON i think with.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
About four or five just really really solid.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
Games and he carried that into his junior year and
he really didn't have a bad. Game i'm talking about
overall his junior year and and, honestly go back and
when you watch those miss those tackles you were, saying
you say you watched every. TACKLE i think he missed
less than than three tackles all. Year But i'm talking
about just from a game specif he really didn't have
a bad. Game you, know everyone has bad plays here and,

(12:50):
there but he never had a bad. Game and that
really started with after he got you, KNOW i would say,
humbled or you, know, HEY i have to do and
be locked in all the. TIME i have to do
my fundamentals all the. Time and once he took that
maturity step that that's kind of what led him to
have the type of year he.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
Had, yeah, Well tory And, gray, coach this is, awesome.
Man we really appreciate you doing. This AND i assume
that from a pro level, Perspective Cam chancellor might be
your most prized pupil you've ever. Coached and who, knows
maybe one day we'll be coming back here saying, nope
he's number two Because nick Emn warre is now number.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
One so we'd all love, that, man great.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
Stuff appreciate your insight and jumping on the air with,
us man and we'll talk down the, road.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
Buddy thanks, Pal, okay thank, you you got? It you bet,
Coach tory And. Gray how about?

Speaker 1 (13:34):
That the secondary coach For South carolina with a few
thoughts On nick Emund Wari, man what'd you make of
what you heard?

Speaker 5 (13:40):
There, WELL i think he's a feisty. GUY i could
see how he uh could could put a cattle proud
into a player and and he's got he's got his,
vision HE'S i think that he probably coached with, HONESTY
u With nick and With Cam, pryor SO i see
why he's a valued secondary.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
Coach, well what he just said there about. RIGHT i
think different coaches have different ways of saying the same.
Thing Like Chris peterson would always tell me that coaches
would come out or players would come up to him and, say, hey,
COACH i got, this And chris would, say, no you
don't have this at. All so the idea that you're always,
motivated that you're never, content you're never resting on your,
laurels and always trying to get, better and always angry

(14:20):
and always pissed.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
OFF i love that, man so especially at that.

Speaker 1 (14:23):
Position by the, WAY i love That we're gonna break
a little fun with audio coming, next and Then Brett
boone gonna join us at four o'clock courtesy Of Venue
kings and talk about the red Hot mariners baby right
here on ninety three to THREE.
