(00:00):
All right, joining us right nowon the radio show. I think this
(00:04):
guy has done a tremendous job sofar as the head coach of the Husky
football team. I thought the springgame Dick was a submash success. It
was. But there's one thing, one thing I'd like to see Jedfish do
more often. You know what thatis? By the way, come on
this radio show. I was onthe first days. Not enough. I
think Jedfish should be on this showonce a week, with a week he's
(00:27):
not the time he can find away of the dogs is with us again
on the air jet. IT'SAFTI andDick. How are you man? What's
up? Guys? I never getinvited. This is the first time I've
been invited in about two months. All Right, I am inviting you to
do this show at least once amonth for the end of time. Are
you in? I can do thatonce an get done. I could commit
(00:50):
to that. We're going to holdyou to it, man, We love
it, love having you on.Let's uh, let's just talk about kind
of how the last you know, five six months have gone. When you
took over hol you had a jobof work to do, no doubt,
had a roster to reconstruct. Giveus your thoughts on the progress you've made
and have you made the kind ofprogress you wanted to Well, I think
that when we took it over,we had so many different obstacles to work
(01:15):
through, and we needed to findcertain opportunities there that weren't necessarily planned on.
And you know, you don't havethe portal open except for about four
programs when we took over January fifteenth, so the only guys that could go
in the portal were guys that wereon teams that coaching changes were made.
And then we had the second batchof portal entries, which was in April.
(01:40):
We had the ability to recruit highschool kids and keep those kids on
our team that signed here prior toour arrival. We were able to get
some kids to move over here thatwere signed with other teams and got to
work with our own players, andin the end, we found a way
to have about a one hundred andnine person roster and about eighty four scholarship
(02:04):
players out of the eighty five.So we are excited about where we are
in terms of depth and in termsof the amount of players we have in
each position. Now we have toget a chance to go out there and
see how could we can be Andtwenty eight incoming transfers is the unofficial count
here on the dog Man website. So let's talk about the position group or
(02:25):
groups that maybe went better than youthought, and maybe those that you know
you weren't as thrilled about after youthe portal closed. Well, you know,
I think we have a really good, really strong running back room with
Jonah and Cam Davis. Part ofbeing in the portal is making sure guys
(02:47):
don't go in the portal, right, or part of things about of the
portal itself is making sure Cam Davistook his name out quickly. That was
important, making sure that we wereable to keep Dan got up, bringing
in Adam Muhammad, bringing in JordanWashington. So we've got some really good
players that were either committed elsewhere oron this team or played for a different
(03:12):
team, and Sam Adams. We'vegot six running backs that I think all
have a great opportunity to really helpus. So I'm excited about the running
back room. I think our defensivebackfield is probably the most veteran. When
you look at Cam fab and Mikels Steen and Elizah, you have ej
mckel and Cam. I mean, those guys were all part of the twenty
(03:37):
nineteen and twenty twenty recruiting class. So that's big. You got Dad Dixon
and the Feast's Price SoC You've gotJordan Shaw, You've got McCutcheon, so
now you've got Dyson. You gotall those guys that now give you a
chance that say okay, that grouphas experience and that group's talented. So
(03:57):
that's a big group for us.And then as the other grooves are progressing,
there's a lot of youth, andthen there's a lot of older guys,
and then the middle group is probablynot a You don't have a lot
of third and fourth year players onthis team. You either have fift year
players or first and second year playersfor the most part. Yeah, well,
Jed, if I were to seeyou on the sidewalk and walked up
(04:18):
to you and said, hey, man, name's Dave, big Husky football
fan. I'm a little concerned aboutthe state of our offensive line. Would
you look at me and say,you know what, you're nuts, you
have no idea what the hell you'retalking about, Or would you say,
you know what? I can seewhy people would have that concern. Where
are you at with that group rightnow? I would say neither. I
(04:41):
say, wow, you're the firstguy that said that to me today.
Me Obviously, it's a topic thathas come up often, and I think
a lot of that has to dowith there are no familiar names. Were
not many familiar names to the fanbase and to really the football community.
(05:05):
Land and Hatchets coming off of anACL. I think if Land and Hatchett
didn't get hurt last year, there'dbe a lot of talk about the excitement
of having Land and Hatchet as oneof our guys. Guard Memolar's coming off
of an ACL. What would thathave looked like if he played all last
year? Would he have been inthe mix as you know, part of
that offensive line. Then you've gotEnoch that transferred in here from Ohio State,
(05:30):
so he started in the bowl gameat Ohio State and now he's with
us. So that's three right offthe bat. Then you've got some of
the highest recruited guys of the PakiFee now who came in here early,
who got almost all the reps atguard. You've got Sewane who's done a
great job for us at left tackle. I think he's got a really good
(05:51):
chance. You've got you as aparty who transferred in here at right tackle,
and many others. So I thinkwe're up to about seventeen offensive linemen,
fourteen scholarship players. And with thatgroup, you know, I do
believe we're gonna get a very solidfive. And if we can get a
very solid five, that leads usa chance to be pretty successful. Well,
(06:15):
you obviously had a wish list goingto the portal at the offensive line
spot. And how successful were youin acquiring those linemen that were your high
priority targets. Yeah, I thoughtwe got some good ones. I thought
we missed on a few good ones. We can't get everybody you want,
but I do feel like we gotsome really good players in this batch.
(06:38):
Just like in recruiting, right, you know, you've got your lists,
You're gonna give everything you got toget those guys, and then you get
the next set of guys, nextset of guys, and figure out who
who lands. But you never knowof that group who's going to be the
top guy. I reminded our staffyesterday that the lowest ranked recruit in our
(06:59):
two thousand two two class was aguy named Wendell Moe and Wendall Moe was
a first team All American Pressuman. So how do you really know until they
get here and they get coached anddeveloped. You've got Coach Carroll's extremely excited
about the group of seventeen we have, and I think it's our responsibility and
job to see how good we canget with those five. And we'll continue
(07:21):
to build it and you know,we will see how good we can be.
Jet fish again with us on theshow, and Coach, you got
the second leading passer in the historyof the SEC and Will Rogers right now
on your roster. Then you havethis kid that turned a lot of heads
in spring ball and Demon Williams, and a lot of folks are talking about
that that maybe we should not justassume that Will Rogers is your guy from
(07:45):
the get go. Is there awindow you think for Demon Williams to win
this job in fall camp and runwith it. Well. Competition is the
central theme of the program, andif we were just declare starters in June,
then what would cause anybody to goout there and work extremely, extremely
hard this summer to be an impactplayer. Demon has an incredible skill set
(08:09):
and he has an ability to impactthe game. He's very young. He
turned to eighteen in April or atthe last week in March. Uh So
when you look at that, there'sa lot of learning. Will has been
playing college football for a long time. He's throwing the ball a lot.
(08:30):
In the Southeastern Conference, He's goingto have some advantages when it comes to
understand the defenses that we're going against. But those two guys are going to
go out there and they're going tocompete every day at practice. They're going
to each take reps with the ones, They're going to each take reps with
the twos. And then as wecontinue to build out how we want to
attack teams, uh, we'll figureout the best way to do that.
(08:54):
And there's no there's no rule thatyou can't play too and there's no rule
that you have to your start inJune. Well, some coaches like to
just play one quarterback back to it, and others like to have specific packages
to utilize the second quarterbacks talents. Is it and would you what have you
done in the past and what areyou looking forward to do doing this year?
(09:16):
I would certainly say that I've alwaysleaned towards a one quarterback system.
Once we make that decision on whothe quarterback is, I think there's some
time that you might say, hey, there's an opportunity here to give the
defense something else to think about.Maybe there's a different skill that a guy
(09:39):
has. But for the most part, as I look at the years of
Calm plays, it's been a rarityto sub out a quarterback. Yeah,
jenn And look at the at theguys you have coming in And Dick mentioned
the twenty eight transfers, which isjust I got a hard time just process
(10:00):
that. But there's a lot ofguys that we still know, and you
mentioned them, Cam fab Mikhael Steine, Thaddeus Dixon, Carson Bruner, Alfonso
two, Patala, Giles Jackson,Cam Davis. How much have you been,
kind of, even off the practicefield, out of the meeting room,
leaning on those guys to help youimplement your system and your culture a
(10:24):
good amount. Denzel Boston is anotherone that but on the same token,
I'm leaning on a Feastan's Price Sockand Jonah Coleman and guys and Isaiah Ward
and Duce Davis and guys that havebeen with me for the last couple of
years. Going into year three andthey know what that culture is going to
look like. So it's a nicecombination of the guys that were here.
(10:46):
Uh, guys like Drew Fowler, guys like Bruner, those guys that have
been learning from us. Zoe hasbeen awesome, Uh Durfy. There's there's
some guys that have been great culturechampions. Michel Hastein has been a culture
champion, fantastic at talking to ourplayers about our leadership and how we do
(11:09):
things. And then we had awe had a great meeting putting together the
standards of our program and what wewant that to look like and how do
we want that to to read andlook And I'm excited about sharing that with
our team as well. I gotone more question on the quarterbacks. When
would you like to name a starterin camp? Uh? Name a starter
(11:33):
or I would say there's a prettygood idea of who's our starter, and
I think it's just a matter ofletting them go out there and rip it
around for about a week or two. But I don't feel any real need
to walk out there and declare, you know, I'm not going to put
starter on their jersey or anything. So yeah, we'll just I guess when
(11:56):
we play Weaver State, but wheneverwe release the depth chart, there'll be
a starter on there. But Ijust want our guys to compete. I
don't really get. I don't know. I think it's different in the NFL.
Like there's not a question that JoeBurrows the starting quarterback or Justin herbertus
starting quarterback forgetting paid fifty million dollarsto do it, and they were drafted
(12:18):
first overall and that's what it is. But or whatever, third overall and
first overall. But I think inthese situations in college football, you get
and without a returning starter on theroster or returning quarterback on the roster,
you got to let those guys goout and compete. And then when they
(12:39):
compete and it works out the wayit should or could, then we'll we'll
figure out exactly how the thing shouldto go. Yeah, Jeed Fish with
us and coaches there. This isa question I've asked coaches for thirty years
on this radio show. Okay, probably why I'm still sitting here, by
the way, but is there aguy or two on this roster that we
are not talking about? And youmentioned the obvious ones, the price Socks
(13:01):
and the Colemans and the cam Davisesand Denzel Boston, Carson brun or whatever.
Is there a guy, maybe anew player or somebody who has stayed
to play for you that guys likeme aren't talking enough about that. By
October November we will be talking aboutWell. I think derf is A has
(13:24):
a chance to be special. UhSo I'm really excited that we have Dirf.
I think see Bass. I thinkSebastian Valdes, who came here,
is going to be a really reallygood player for us. I love young
Adam Mohammad. That kid's gonna bean elite running back. And you know,
(13:48):
quitting Moore, Quit Moore. Ithink we'll see a big impact from
him. And then we got tosee what some of these offensive linemen do.
We gotta see what card Men Millardoes. We gotta see what Landon
Hatchet does. We gotta see whatZach Kenny does. We got to see
what those some of those guys do. But uh, I'm I think we
got a good football team. Wegotta. But you know, I told
some of the that we're like aMother's Day buffet. You know, he
(14:09):
got like a lamb shop and ascrambled eggless and it's like, you know,
how do you have all these peoplefrom all these different places they're trying
to feed them all the same thing. Well, that's what we got to
figure out. We got to figureout how are we going to get this
team to play as hard as anyteam in America with the fact that they've
(14:30):
only known each other or played witheach other for this season. Jed Fish
joining us and coach Bill Belichick obviouslybrought greater national attention to your program when
he was here for that week inspring, But what tangible help had he
been to you and your interactions. He's an incredible resource, the greatest coach
(14:50):
of all time. Able to callon him for guidance on every possible subject,
whether defense, offense, or specialteams, whether it be roster management,
culture leadership, whether it be teammeeting, situational football, or whether
it be just as a friend. There is nothing that I can't ask coach,
(15:16):
and there's that I'm not willing toask coach. So he's consistently guided
me and helped me throughout this processto be the best I can be for
University of Washington. Do you seeBill and Pete jed being there during the
season for you as well, becauseI think some people have wondered how big
(15:37):
of a role will they play? How big of a role can they play?
Like once this thing kicks off,are you going to be running tape
by them? Or they gonna besetting you texts and saying give you into
their thoughts on how the game went. Do you see them playing a role
like that during the season. Ithink that's all up to them and us
and how we go about it.I mean, they're more than welcome to
(15:58):
be a part of anything they wantto be. Coach Belichick and I talked
every week during the season a yearago, and he watched all of our
games, and we bounce stuff offof each other every week. So that's
not going to change. I don'tthink because we're here. I think it'd
probably and anything get be more.Coach Carroll lives whatever ten minutes from here.
(16:21):
I think it's amazing when when hecomes to the facility and when he
comes by here, when he watchespractice or when he walks out on the
field. The guys. Guys anicon is when national championships and Super Bowls
that that's happened. What four differentcoaches. Ever, so when we get
him out here, we take advantageof it. And the more he wants
(16:41):
to come out here, the morewill take advantage of it. And if
he just wants to be a fanand a dad and the grandpa and you
know, hang out with BC's kidsand watch the games up in sweep and
that's what he'll do. And ifhe wants to be more involved. And
we have the great the resource ofone of the greatest, two of the
great it's probably four coaches of alltime, both of which are very connected
(17:03):
to Seattle. Until you do well, coach, we just had the national
football champion run off to the NFL. We had a two time national basketball
champion close to becoming the next headcoach to the late of the Lakers.
Is that an indication of the stateof college sports? And is there a
problem with the state of college sportsnow? I don't think there's a problem
with the state of college sports. You know, I would say this the
(17:29):
best part about right now. Ithink college football is in a great place.
Players are getting paid, coaches aregetting paid, and it's the most
watched thing on TV. And theratings are the highest they've ever been in
college sports. This is the mostwatched national championship game college football every Saturday
is being fought for for multimedia rightsfor millions upon millions of dollars. And
(17:53):
if people aren't happy in their lockerroom, they could leave the locker room.
So you're not stuck with anybody. So I love where we are.
I think there's always going to besome changes that are made here. We're
gonna have to figure out how arewe going to handle revenue share. We're
gonna have to figure out what's theresponsibility of each university to let's call it,
(18:18):
give out these dollars, to allocatethe dollars. What are we going
to do with that? And howare we going to make sure that we
continue to keep the players the numberone focus and their development. But once
we get this done, I justthink we're in an unbelievable spot in the
sport. And I know we'll haveseventy two thousand screaming people every home game,
and there'll be a ton of eyeson television, and we got some
(18:41):
amazing football games this year that we'regoing to need everybody cheering for us.
Now. I can't wait. Bookedour flights for Penn State and Iowa the
other day. All ready to geton the road and get out there and
check out those big ten spots. So can't wait to see this go off.
Man, And you know what,I had another question for you,
but I forgot. The good newsis you're back with us in a month,
(19:02):
So let's ask you. Then yougot it. We'll talk to them.
See you about Jedfish on the radioshow? Man, I think we
locked them in every month here. That's how you produce a radio show,
young man. Right there, youput a guy in the spot on the
air in front of everybody when hehas no choice but to say, okay,
I'll do it. So what doyou say we come back and respond
to what Jedfish said there? Didhe not just say I think there's a
(19:26):
good idea of who the starting quarterbackis going to be? All right,
So they're gonna let these things compete. They'll let Demon Williams and Will Rogers
go at it, but kind oflet you know they're what they're thinking at
the quarterback position. Will Rogers versusDemon Williams will find out in fall camp
and let's come back and talk moredogs. React to what we heard from
Jedfish? There coming up in abusy Thursday night right here on ninety three
(19:48):
to three KJRFM,
