Speaker 2 (00:25):
One Ball program.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
The Provident Swedish premad show starts now good evening from
a warm and beautiful Lumen field where the sun is shining,
and we're about to play some soccer tonight here at
Lumen underneath the sun.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Sounders San Diego FC tonight here from Lumen. And you know,
back on April first, Seattle lost three to nothing down
in San Diego.
Speaker 4 (00:50):
Since then it's been pretty good.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
The Ray Green are five to two to one, the
only loss coming a week ago to LAFC. The latest
win coming just back on Saturday FC Dallas and the team,
just like the weather is heating up as they usually
do around this time of the year, We're gonna look
to keep scorching this evening against San Diego FC. We
welcome you in to the Sounders FC pre match show
(01:12):
presented by Providence, Swedish, official healthcare partner of Seattle Sounders FC.
Shashall mention that today's match is sponsored by Umpquah Bank,
the official banking partner of Sounders FC. Jackson felt here
in the booth alongside the player Callen Rowe and the
coach Pete Fewing. We are here for the next half
hour before Danny Jackson will have the call for Sounders
and San Diego FC. But we start, of course, as
(01:35):
we always do, by looking back a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
Callen.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
It wasn't the prettiest match there against Dallas on Saturday.
We needed a penalty kick in the eighty sixth minute
by Albert Rusnak. But at the end of the day,
good teams get stuff done. This team got it done
and it was three points on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
I mean, I wouldn't say it was it was ugly
by any means.
Speaker 5 (01:53):
It was a pretty game. We did create some things.
It was an exciting one. Just nothing actually fell for
us in the end. Is that fine old product, whether
it be the final ball at the cross, the pass,
the weight of the cross or pass.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
We're just finding in the back of the net, right,
That is what.
Speaker 5 (02:07):
You fans want, That is what we would wins games
as goals.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
So it was a positive.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
However, on the other side, obviously a shutout is what
you need, and that's exactly what happened, and so Stephen
Fry another little tally there for him going forward.
Speaker 6 (02:21):
I was pleased because in a thirty four game season,
you're gonna have games where you don't quite get the bounce,
you don't quite get the call, you don't quite get
the quality of crosses, but you came out with a win.
I loved walking into a locker room and saying, hey,
they were better, right, and we won. I did not
think Dallas was better, but we just couldn't find the
back of the net. And so I believe in the
(02:43):
soccer gods, small g small g and I think we
got a little bit of love from the soccer gods,
and we've certainly had our share of not getting that.
So it was kind of nice. Yeah, you know, and
a midweek game or to start this three game series,
excuse me to go and get that one, and Albert
tucked it away, So it's a good win. You throw
it behind you and then you know, you're playing this
team which is second in the Western Conference, and they
(03:05):
thumped us three zero, so you can get ready for
that one right away.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
Yeah, have a coach. I wore linen when we won,
and now I'm wearing linen again.
Speaker 6 (03:12):
It just means right that that's the happenings it next
year in February.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
So right, you had the Como look going on on
Lake Lake Como.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
Look, we're still on Saturday it.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
I literally have all Italian on right now, so we're
still in com We're still we're still Italians.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
For the folks listening, it's it's a white shirt, it's
blue pants.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
No, no boat loafers. Loafers not boat shoes. It's long.
You just got off a boat of Lake Como.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
You're just hanging off to the side.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
I'm going for my happy hour. Apparteeth for air to tow.
He is dressed in Italian tonight. How about that from
Kellan Row?
Speaker 3 (03:44):
I am dressed in roths, dressed for less tonight. We
welcome you in here the pre match show Sounders San
Diego FC tonight Here at a beautiful Moomen field where
right now it is seventy eight degrees as my phone
says it's a warm one here tonight, but right now
the shape he is covering pretty much ninety nine percent
of the field. We expect that will turn to one
(04:04):
hundred percent soon as the sun continues to set, which
will be very nice for the players not having to
play in that hot, direct sunlight that has been pounding
on this turf here at Lumenfield all day. But guys,
there's a lots to discuss with what Brian Spencer is
doing with his lineup tonight before we get to that,
because you are going to hear a couple of names
not in that starting lineup. The reason is because of
(04:27):
this welcome into the Providence Swedish team.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
Health reports.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Danny Mazowski picked up a knock in training last week.
He had a cortisone injection on Thursday. It is a
muscle injury, I think gosh. Brian Spencer said on KGr
with myself and andrews Furst yesterday that it's a glute
injury there. It's that muscle. But he is healthy enough
today to make the bench. That is good news. So
(04:52):
did the fitness test on Saturday. Agans Dallas couldn't go,
but he's back there on the bench today. Jackson Reagan
also back on the He is finally over his hamstring injury.
And that's a good thing that Jackson Reagan's back because
Jamar Gomez Andrade this is another name you're not gonna
hear in the starting lineup in a moment. He is
going to be out roughly two to four weeks. Not
(05:14):
exact sure timing yet, but that is a hamstring strain
for Yamar suffered against Dallas.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
He will be out for a while here with the Sounders.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Also, Jordan Morris, we got some news on this yesterday
on KGr as well.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
He's getting closer.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
According to Brian Schmetzer in that interview, it's possible that
he sees the bench against Vancouver in eleven days, which
would be outstanding as we hope to have Jordan Morris
back ready to go to the Club World Cup starting
in just two.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
And a half weeks.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
So with that all noted of who is available and
who isn't available, be viewing what is Brian Schmetzer's delta
starting eleven.
Speaker 6 (05:49):
Coach Schmetzer puts out his four to two three one.
It is a luxury to be able to have starters
always starting right because we're deep, we can rowe to eight.
So here it is Fry your captain is in goal,
Alex rolled On your right back, knew who your left back,
Jonathan Bell and Kim Key he will be your center backs.
(06:10):
In the middle of the park, Christian rolled On. Obid
Vargas will sit in the middle. On the right. Paul
Rothrock comes back to the starting lineup. Ryan Kent will
be on the left, Rothrock on the right. Albert Rusnik
will sit underneath a sus Ferrara.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Not much rotation for founders. We'll talk about that in
a moment. But callen, what is San Diego doing today?
They're sticking with their four to three three. They're gonna
look to play out of the back.
Speaker 5 (06:32):
The coach Mikey Varies has put out on this Wednesday
in goal Dos Santos.
Speaker 4 (06:36):
The left back Bobino.
Speaker 5 (06:38):
In the center backs you have McVeigh McNair and then
in the right back you have for Hoven.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
That three in the.
Speaker 5 (06:43):
Midfield, it's gonna be Verstkoff Alvarado and the goal scorer
last weekend is del Torre up top. In that front three,
you have Maten, you have Dryer their DP and then
up top.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
At the number nine.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
You have Balakari Boy Dryer has been so good for
them this year. We'll talk more about San Diego in
a little bit, but Callen, going back to what Brian
Spencer was doing, the thing that's most glaring is not much.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
Isn't changing much.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Obviously we got Rothrock for day La Vega, you got
the injured Gamar out, Jonathan Bell in for him. But
this team staying very very close to what we saw
on Saturday against Dallas.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
What do you think I think Brian Spencer liked the performance.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
Obviously there wasn't a final product until that PK, but
he liked the final performance of that on Saturday. And
when you're playing a team that is second in the West,
that is above you in points, you have to put
out your best team. You know, this is not a
time to relax. You're also playing a team who did travel.
You're at home now for three game a three game stretch.
You put out your best team. You have the home
crowd in front of you, so even if you do
(07:46):
have those tired legs in the last five ten minutes
of each half, you have the home crown to pickyback.
Speaker 6 (07:51):
Yeah, good points and there's a revenge factor, right, and
this is the second time these two teams have played
each other. The first one the three zero drubbing really
at San Diego. We owe them something. So it's easy.
As Kelen said, this is the number two team in
the league. We're number five. We can jump up a
little bit. There's great games with lots of implications today
(08:13):
for the top five or six in the West. So
it's an important game. Players get up for important games.
Every game is important, yes, but some games are even
more important. This happens to be one of those today,
very very big. And I like that you said they
reward them. They reward Brian will reward guys and expect
them to be able to give one hundred percent for
ninety minutes.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
Again, Soundia wants to gain do a twice.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
Sounders are just four points behind San Diego. So you
think about a win today and how that changes the
dynamic and the standings. Gentlemen, let's talk about the forward position.
Jordan's still out with the hamstring, Danny Mazowski coming back
from his muscle injury.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
There it is glued. So it's again Heesu's Ferrara.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
We saw him again that position against Dallas on Saturday A.
How do we evaluate what we saw in b What
do we need him to do today against a bit
of more of an offensive team in Sandy Diego then,
and we saw in Dallas Kellen.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
Well, look, San Diego is gonna want the ball.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
They're gonna possess the ball especially, so I'm not looking
so much as Hayesu says, is he gonna be behind?
Is he gonna come back and play? I'm looking at
him on the other side of the ball. How is
he He's gonna be the first guy to press? So
how is he looking to press? Are they looking to
keep it one side? Are they gonna look to trap
San Diego? Let them make the mistake and then win
the ball higher up? I think Jesus Frere is a
smart enough player to know when to go and when
(09:25):
not to go, But don't tire yourself out running around.
When with this quality quality of San Diego looking to
keep the ball in that back line.
Speaker 7 (09:32):
I like it.
Speaker 6 (09:32):
I would totally agree. I was really impressed and a
little bit surprised the way San Diego would play out
of the back. They literally were playing balls a yard
off the end line right to come out of the back.
I mean they weren't playing balls to the edge of
the box. They were playing him literally one yard to
the right or to where. Yeah, and they were very
comfortable on the ball. Having said that, you're right, you
(09:55):
gotta be opportunistic if there is a chance. But everybody
has to go as a group. There good coming out
of the back. Don't waste your energy. But when there
is an opportunity. And then the same recipe from last weekend,
get to that near post, Get to that near post,
Get to that near post. Open things up for Albert
coming through or Christian or Obed as well. That was
that's been the recipe for Danny Massovski to get all
(10:17):
his goals is making that very disciplined run.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
And I think what you know, especially someone who like
Jesus Ferrer who's coming in obviously we have multiple injuries,
he's got to be unselfish and a lot doesn't a
lot of it doesn't happen much when it comes to strikers.
You if anyone's being honest with us, right, it doesn't
even happen to coming much or from so he could
be too selfish sometimes, but selfless he's your right he's
got to be willing to make the run first, like
you said to that near post, to open up space
(10:42):
for someone else. Right, you can't always just be the
one to score it. Can you open up space for
someone else? Can you make the run? Can you hold
the ball instead of flipping it first time? And you
know what, you're gonna get crunched because it's the better play.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
And also believe that that pass is coming.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Believe in you know your teammates and obviously that's where
the chemistry comes in, which has been a big talking
point Pasus Ferra building that chemistry with the guys behind him,
with Albert Rusnak, with Ryan Kent, Paul Rothbrot today on
the right wing, believing that they're gonna be able to
put a good cross in, So making that run and
staying with that run because pee that's gonna lead to
good results if he believes in it.
Speaker 6 (11:15):
Yeah, we have seventeen assists from the flanks, and that
includes new who, that includes Alex Glanion.
Speaker 8 (11:22):
There's everybody who's.
Speaker 6 (11:23):
Been on the wing, whether they've been a wingback or
an attacking midfielder from the wide, we've gotten the assist.
To your point, Jackson when a forward knows the cross
is gonna come in, then they're gonna make the run.
And it can't be all run if you cross. It
has to be that belief you're talking about.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Well, we're just about a half hour away from kickoff
here as the shade has now fully covered the field
here at Luminfield.
Speaker 4 (11:47):
But it is a warm evening for soccer here in Seattle.

Sounders can make sure that doesn't happen again. We'll continue
with the pre match shown next on Sports Radio nine

Speaker 3 (16:26):
Hee beautiful, beautiful evening for soccer here in Seattle.
Speaker 8 (16:30):
Well.
Speaker 3 (16:30):
San Diego is off to a hot start in MLS,
currently second place in the Western Conference with twenty seven points.
There is four above Seattle in fifth place twenty seven
goals scored that is tied for second most in the West,
five above Seattle. Defensively, they've conceded seventeen goals, which is
too less than the Sounders as well, and we know,
of course, they beat Seattle three to nothing back on
(16:52):
April fifth, down at Snapdragon Stadium in southern California.
Speaker 4 (16:56):
Callen P. What do we see from this San Diego
team to night?
Speaker 3 (16:59):
A little bit of rotation here midweek, Hellen, but still
a very dangerous squad on the field.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
They're a very day to squad like we have.
Speaker 5 (17:06):
They have the luxury of having starters on the bench,
and it's good for them and it's good for the league.
But we talked about it already, the possession factor that
San Diego has and that they want. You know, they're
not one to go direct as much, and if they are,
it's going down that right side with Dryer, So it's
it's going to be a lackluster, good movement of the ball,
(17:26):
pretty soccer in many ways in that back line, and
then when they get forward they kind of let their
front three do what they want and it's really become
a very beautiful game to watch. And have been very
impressed with their first season and how together they are
this first season.
Speaker 6 (17:41):
Yeah, I agree. I'm excited to watch them play again.
Can they replicate what they did against Seattle in San
Diego and sant and can Seattle handle that and counter
and go After twenty seven goals, there's a lot of goals.
There's only a couple of clubs that have that in
the league. San Jose, by the way, has more goals
thirty two, which.
Speaker 9 (18:02):
Arena.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
I think they're also giving up twenty guys are effects.
Speaker 6 (18:06):
Yeah, but I'm with you. Dryer is very dangerous for me.
Alla carry coming out. Uh, he's a good post up guy.
He could turn dangerous as well. And they've got guys
that can get assists, right.
Speaker 5 (18:17):
Dylatorio is one of those guys for me that it
kind of sneaks up on you. Like last weekend, you
got that goal, he's running a high he just got
engaged and and now he's and now he's playing really well.
Got that goal, and then he's coming down in Seattle.
He's one of those just got the call up for
the national team. These guys are getting these bumps, and
he's one of those guys that comes in late and
you talk about assists, that's the one.
Speaker 6 (18:35):
Yeah, this is yeah, you're right, and and you know what,
this is their first time playing here, and I always
think that lifts a team because this is a franchise,
rich history, great crowd.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
Tonight, early game, callen, did you feel that when I
went went teams like you know, came into this building
for the first time, they were a little bit higher up.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
There's there's two ways to go about it.
Speaker 5 (18:54):
You could be really high up because you have a
cool fan baser's playing in Seattle, which is it's a
beautiful day for it. I mean everything about the city.
This is what people look fall in love with the city,
right when it's really beautiful out and you see the mountains,
you see the water everywhere.
Speaker 4 (19:06):
You're driving across five twenty and you're going.
Speaker 5 (19:07):
Oh my gosh, look at all those beautiful mountains and
waters and things of that sort. But there's also the
other factor of hey, this is a hard place to play.
This is a good team, this is a big franchise,
this is a great fan base. It can be either
fear or it can be confidence. Well, we'll see what
it is today. You got you mentioned Luca de la Torre,
three goals and assists so far in the year. Andrews
(19:28):
Drier from Denmark Gill. You're gonna hear Danny Jackson say
his name a number of times today. He has six goals,
seven assists.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
Also Valacari the finish midfield. They're three goals, five assists.
And don't forget about irving Chucky Logano on their bench
as well. He has five goals and six assists this year.
He's a big impact guy who can come off the
bench for San Diego tonight. A lot to worry about
here with a team that beat three Seattle three to nothing.
Back on April fifth, we'll take a break here, We're
gonna come back and we're gonna hear from Paul Rothrock
(19:55):
and also have our players to watch, which might feature
Paul Rothrock as we counting you down to kick off
just about twenty minutes away here on Sports Radio nine

Welcome back to Luminfield Sounders tonight facing off against San
Diego FC. A beautiful evening for soccer here, A little
bit warm here at lumin Field this evening. Before we
hear from Paul Rofluck. Let's get into our players to
watch for Seattle tonight. Kellen, who you going with?
Speaker 5 (24:27):
You know, I'm not sure I've ever said this one,
but knew who it's going to be New who the
PAP reference that. Knew who does have an assists, he
does have a goal. We all know that he loves
getting forward. But knew who has to be the defensive
player first, because they do have their DP, their star player,
and Dryer on his side.
Speaker 4 (24:44):
Who loves to get the ball? Who the San Diego
team is looking for in.
Speaker 5 (24:47):
This attack, so knew who needs to stay at home
a little bit more or at least be smart on
his runs to make sure he has covered.
Speaker 6 (24:53):
I'm going to go with Ryan Kent for the fact
that it's first time he's played against this San Diego team,
but we need him to be productive, getting in his crosses,
getting on the end of crosses, penetrating through the box,
opening things up, drawing players, but also to help new
who deal with Pryor on that side as well, because
if he does get forward, he's gonna have to read
it and he's gonna have to gallop back.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
I'm going Hasus Ferreira and Kellen, you mentioned it a
couple of minutes ago in the first segments, his job pressing,
and we're talking to him a couple of weeks ago
in the locker room, and how much he takes pride
and pressing well.
Speaker 4 (25:23):
San Diego likes to play out of the back.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
Hasius Ferira make them pay, force him to a big mistake,
make a big turnover there in their own third.
Speaker 4 (25:31):
Of the field.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
See if I can lead to a big mistake from
their part in the pickle for Seattle. None of us
chose Paul Rothrock, but I chose to talk to Paul
Rothrock yesterday after training. Here was our conversation looking ahead
to this game against San Diego. Things didn't go great
last time he gave faced san Diego, So why is
it gonna be different this time?
Speaker 11 (25:49):
Well, run being at home to start, so I think
that makes a big difference. I think having the crowd
behind this really helps. You know, we want our revenge.
Now We've got a little extra motivation going into this game.
And you know, we set out to try and win
each series, and we can't win this series, but we
can at least tie the series with San Diego, So
that's our objective tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
Got a good momentum coming off of that one nothing
to win this last weekend.
Speaker 4 (26:14):
Just takeaways from.
Speaker 3 (26:15):
That and why it gave you guys momentum more than
just maybe just getting the one nothing result.
Speaker 11 (26:20):
Yeah, I think there were some really positive moments, especially
in the first half.
Speaker 4 (26:25):
I also think.
Speaker 11 (26:28):
All of us could say it wasn't our best game,
and I'm sure you guys probably felt that way watching
from the sidelines, and yet we still found a way
to win. So that's always a big positive. And you know,
coming off that last big week and starting the first
game of three in a three game week with a
(26:48):
win is huge. You know, we're still nine points out
of seven days or eight days is still.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
On the table.
Speaker 3 (26:55):
You do you have a number in mind of all right,
these are the obviously you know we got four and
nine the previous road trip, but these three at home.
Do you have a number in mind if we want
to hit this number or we're okay hitting this number?
Speaker 4 (27:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (27:06):
I think you know, if you look at the table
right now, we've climbed up a little bit, but nine
points this week puts us in a really good spot.
So I think everyone's shooting for nine obviously it's a
game at a time, but it starts with tomorrow and
hopefully then we're looking at six and then we just
got to get three points.
Speaker 3 (27:26):
I think the temperature kickoff is going to be somewhere
around eighty degrees heating up here in the Northwest.
Speaker 4 (27:31):
Do you like that? Do you not like that? Because
it's going to be a little bit odd when you
when you kick things off.
Speaker 11 (27:35):
I think benefits the spectator's more than anyway. I'm sure
my family will enjoy warm weather. But yeah, I think
that's going to be a challenge tomorrow. But we're dealing
with the same challenge they are, and I think whoever
can handle that a little bit better, well we'll get
the three points tomorrow.

not just an oppress. Because the San Diego is a

Speaker 6 (32:47):
Let that backline have it.
Speaker 4 (32:48):

Speaker 5 (32:51):
But also when you win the ball, make sure your patient,
make sure you keep it for a few times because
you haven't had it for a long period of time.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
Don't just try and go to goal right away.
Speaker 6 (33:00):
Organized at the back they got they're in a four
to three three, so we got to make sure we
don't get hot with space at the back. There's gonna
be a lot of numbers up front that are back
four are gonna have to deal with. I always think
it's the wingers for me, if they can be productive,
get quality crosses, get on the end of crosses. But again,
this team was really impressive to me last time. The
(33:20):
way they played out of the back was very very good,
very clinical. They didn't give the ball away. So Seattle
has to have a really complete game, not like the
last one. The last one we got the win, but
this one we've got to be very effective in the
attacking third and then restarts are going to be a
factor as well.

For your Sounders, they enjoyed a somewhat frustrating afternoon on Saturday,
but like all good teams, they found a way to
win and revenge will be the focus as the Sounders
(38:33):
look to put things right after suffering a heavy early
season lost down in Southern California, and they seek to
extend their unbeaten streak here at Lumenfield to fourteen games
with a result tonight. I'm Danny Jackson alongside former Sounders
captain Brad Evans here in the birth next to me
for tonight's game. Before we get to bread for his
(38:55):
initial thoughts, let's get you the Delta starting eleven for
your Sounders and a future for Brian Schmtzer, Stefan, Fryan Gold.
A back four roll down Kim ky He Jonathan Bell
will slide on that left center back spot. Jaymark came
off injured in the first half this past weekend, and
then new rule on that left hand side. O Bed
(39:15):
Christian in the middle of the park. Paul Rothrock slides
on that right hand side. Albert Rosnack with his seventh
goal and game winner against.
Speaker 8 (39:23):
Dallas of the weekend. He sits in the ten, Ryan
Kent on the left, then Jesus Ferrera up front for
San Diego.
Speaker 25 (39:30):
Dosantos and gold Er, Hoop and McVeigh, McNair and Bombino
are the back four.
Speaker 8 (39:35):
Albarados first, Cough and Della.
Speaker 25 (39:37):
Torrea the midfield three and you're attacking Trio Aremighten Valakari
and then MainMan Andress Dryer up front. So brand as
the teams get set, Sounders are gonna be attacking their
traditional north end in that first half, green shirts, blue shorts,
white socks, their anniversary kids San Diego in.
Speaker 8 (39:57):
Their navy blue midnight blue. They're attacking the goal to
our right. As the Flames go off behind the goals.
Speaker 25 (40:03):
They'll get the kickoff immediately, go forward, headed away, five
roll down.
Speaker 8 (40:07):
So let's get your initial thoughts.
Speaker 25 (40:08):
Three points fight to look at home, of course, to
continue to build the momentum the Sounders have gotten since
really that loss in San Diego. We'll get your second
minute thoughts. In a second Deltroy gets towards the end.
Lowys could be an Eula.
Speaker 8 (40:20):
Four to get No, it's gonna be the deflection off Delatroy,
it's gonna be a goal kick. So Brad keissa today's game.
Speaker 9 (40:24):
Yeah, look, I think it's an opportunity for the Sounders
to come out and put in a strong performance. So
so a little bit of a shift from this San
Diego team, but everything stays the same in the way
that they're gonna play. That four to three three causes
Sounders tremendous problems down in San Diego, and they've proven
that throughout this season and being a really, really good
team in their first year, and so the Sounders have
to be aware. Then you look at it already as
(40:45):
this San Diego team will almost sent those front six
just on one half of the field and bait the
Sounders into trying to play. So the Sounders have to
be really good on transition and finding the switch of attack,
and tonight, for me, it's about getting Jesus Ferrara off
the mark.
Speaker 4 (40:59):
It's a perfect opportunity.
Speaker 9 (41:00):
Here at home, crowd's not as big as usual, we
got the Mariners playing, it's kind of a funky kickoff time.
So for the Sounders, there's a strong performance all around
and build off of this past weekend.
Speaker 8 (41:11):
Step and Fry last set forward flicks on by Ferrara,
the lone man up there, as he was in the
second part of the second half.
Speaker 25 (41:19):
In last weekend's game, isolated before Brian Schmittz made a
couple of changes and then of course Sounders getting that
near last minute winner the foot of Reznik from the
penalty spot as Jonathan Bell steps in wins the ball
picked up by San Diego Valacari picks up a misplayed
ball by rolled On down there left hand side far
(41:40):
side the left is Valacari as he pulls it back
to Bombing a young Farry left side defender. The Sounders
do pick it up with rolled On, who's been a
rock for the Sounders this season, as Ryan Kent rolls
it back to sef and Fry getting a nice run
of games and Ken Braddy's come in go three assists
(42:02):
quickly and now gave himself settled into the team.
Speaker 9 (42:05):
Yeah, And I spoke to him at lunch just last
week and I asked him some questions, Right, how is
the level of play been?
Speaker 4 (42:11):
Have you been surprised?
Speaker 9 (42:12):
And he said, actually, I've been, you know, pleasantly surprised
with the level of play here. The trainings have been
super high quality. Now he just wants that consistency. One
thing he thought was obviously in Portland. We all watched
the game. He didn't have the best game in Portland,
and I told him, listen, if you're gonna put in
the hard works, Mets is gonna give you opportunities to
continue to perform.
Speaker 4 (42:30):
And we know that what you can provide.
Speaker 25 (42:31):
Here CAUs Sanchos giving it away, flick fard this safe.
Speaker 8 (42:35):
As he scrambled back into goal. There was a misplayed
clearance by the San Diego goalkeeper straight to the foot
of Alex rolled On. Couldn't quite find the open goal,
but it is going to be a corner cake for
the sound.
Speaker 9 (42:47):
And Alex just catches this one off the turf beforehand,
a little bit more height and that was for sure
in the back of the net. The Sounders end up,
like you said, with a corner kick here unless he
can get some more runners in the box. It's what
we've been asking for the past couple of weeks.
Speaker 25 (43:00):
Third minute here lumin Field Neil Nils sound of San
Diego corner kick outswinger and it goes Eddie Clearbyts first
got picked up top of the box by Obed Vargas
could not turn out of pressure, goes back to the
right hand side to a Russlick who drives.
Speaker 8 (43:13):
It in towards the backstick.
Speaker 25 (43:14):
Chestuf Kinky finds Ryan Kent twenty five yards at little
reverse ball to New down this left.
Speaker 8 (43:20):
Hand side you're defending by Vie Hoover and the eighteen
year old low need for him. San Jose goes over
the endline and it's gonna be another sound as cornerkick.
Speaker 9 (43:28):
The one thing we've seen from San Diego is the
size of their back line. They came into this league
knowing that it's an athletic league, but they picked up
the size in their first off season right and really
going after it. They've got some big bodies in there
for the Sounders, still adding Paul Rothrock to the mix
now with five runners and Jesus in the mix as well.
So we've seen it where they've gone with four in
(43:50):
the box hasn't really become fruitful. Now you've got six
willing runners in the box. Look for this one to
be swung in just inside the six.
Speaker 25 (43:58):
YEP, it's gonna be an in swinger with the russneck
Ryan Ken close five moves away now right in.
Speaker 8 (44:02):
The six is right of us mentioned and scrambled away.
Speaker 25 (44:05):
It was off the foot of Ross Brow couldn't quite
poke it into the goal. But sound is to pick
it up down the right hand side now with Alex
Roldan rolls.
Speaker 8 (44:14):
It into Knew just came from an off side position.
Assistant referee on the far side. Flag goes up, Gonna
be a free kick just inside the eighteen four San Diego.
Speaker 26 (44:26):
What a chance for the sound is off the corner
again swung in well and that's Paul Rothrocky almost it
comes out of the vision right there, just hits his shin,
pops down and just can't get his foot on it.
Speaker 9 (44:37):
With decent effort from the sounder. That's what willing runners
do in the box. You have to put teams under pressure.
And then it's Alex Roldan on the flip side. And
what happens is on these fields and this big of
a crowd, if you're ten feet away and you tell
someone to leave the ball, you can't hear anything on
the field. So Knew who just gets caught in that
offside position. You see the idea there from Alex looking
for that threaded through the.
Speaker 8 (44:56):
Ball Ryan can't ask him for a him.
Speaker 25 (45:01):
Referee looks like he's given it a little bit unclear
for the players both San Diego and Sounder's gonna look
at the referee asking for the call, blowing the whistle.
Speaker 8 (45:10):
It's gonna be a free kick. The sound is right
in front of mikey Varius, the.
Speaker 25 (45:17):
Head coach for San Diego, his first head coaching job
in MLS, former assistant coach at Dallas and the men's
national team. It's amazing lots of fans across MLS in
the manner in which he's approached the game. As Bred mentioned,
they dealt with a size and physicality and now they've
certainly added the fire power in the midfield, three in
(45:37):
the attacking three and four to three to three brand
has worked for them really well in the way that
they've set up with offensively and then defensively as well.
Speaker 9 (45:44):
Yeah, the amount of goals that they've scored this season
is especially in their first is really admirable and you
just love as a fan to see the willingness to
push forward. In golfer games, we've seen expansion teams come
in and play five in the back and really just
get through their first seat in San Diego said no,
we're gonna find the right players to play this system.
Speaker 4 (46:04):
Credit to their head coach and in sticking with it right.
Speaker 9 (46:06):
Sometimes coaches after the first loss they'll maybe switch things up,
and San Diego.
Speaker 4 (46:11):
Has been consistent that they've been very, very good.
Speaker 9 (46:14):
Now Lozano's have been probably the biggest piece along with Dryer,
and to miss him is a little bit of something
that'll be missing from this squad tonight. But still the
fact remains four three three. We stick to our tactics
and we should be able to get the job done.
That's their thought process.
Speaker 8 (46:29):
Yeah, Belacari a decent addition to the lineup. Place of Shooky,
here comes haess Errer. Can he bring it down top
of the books? Chance asking for han boys the crowd
referees ten yards away doesn't give anything.
Speaker 25 (46:43):
Cleaned up by mcnah Actually McVay cleans it up off
the toe of Haesus Ferrera, picked up by the sounds
on the halfway line. This is sawing good chance to
haess Verreo just to find a little path forward looking
for that opening is bred Evans mentioned has that some
really good performances.
Speaker 8 (47:02):
In the last couple of weeks just connecting the ball,
connecting the pass. Is he good off the mark so
far for the Soundest.
Speaker 9 (47:08):
Yeah, well, you look at Andy Rose right now throwing
his hands up. He's certain that the ball possibly touched
the hand, but.
Speaker 8 (47:18):
All over the chuck picked up, cleared by Bombina.
Speaker 9 (47:21):
But tonight's biggest challenge for Ferrera is gonna be sitting
in between those two that he's got to find the
right pockets. He's not gonna go man for man against
either of the center backs. He's got to show up
in the spaces that they don't think he's going to.
And the one thing about Jesus is the deceptive speed. Right,
He'll check into those sauce spots and then he saw it.
He'll turn and go and he's clear in onside. If
(47:42):
he gets just a touch on that one, he's clear
non goals.
Speaker 4 (47:45):
We watch the replay here, ball.
Speaker 9 (47:46):
Bounces for as inside the box, bounces up and almost
touches inside the armpit.
Speaker 4 (47:52):
I don't think the Sounders will get that call.
Speaker 8 (47:54):
Slayed away by mcnath former Sunderland men came over in
the off season, has made a really good partnership with McVeigh.
Came across from the east coast DC United, or gets
flipped by the sound to the far side. The ride
kept in on that.
Speaker 25 (48:10):
Right hand side by Roth. A little shimmy of the
hips will slip by Bombino. Rof're getting the start tonight
place of Pega de la Vega as well, Darntell. Let's
ball go over, nipped by Dela Tori and then a
free kick given by the referee Roth Rock just a
little tug on the San Diego left back Mombino and
(48:32):
it's going to be free kick quickly taken by San Diego, who'll.
Speaker 8 (48:36):
Mess around in possession. Second in possession in MLS this season.
Speaker 25 (48:41):
After the Columbus Crew so as Bred mentioned twenty seven
goals scored seventeen goals against.
Speaker 8 (48:46):
So solid offensively defensively as well, so scene.
Speaker 25 (48:53):
Some good teams have a good inaugural season, of course,
Saint Louis being one of them, most recently going five
to zero in the first five games, winning the Western
Conference in their first season in MLS. See if San
Diego could try and match that. But here comes Might
down the left hand side, tracked four clash up bodies
(49:13):
and it was logally challenged by Might and right on
the top of the Sounder's eighteen yard box. Kim Kihi
goes down holding his ankle. It's gonna be a free
kick for Sounders, and the referee just pulls up Kim
the Sounders to take a breather, But good transitional plane.
San Diego Bred have scored five goals in transition lead MLS.
Speaker 8 (49:34):
They certainly have the five power to go from one
side of the field to the other.
Speaker 9 (49:37):
Yeah, and they've shown that all throughout this season, and
they're most dangerous when they're in their counter in my opinion,
you saw it when the Sounders played down there.
Speaker 4 (49:45):
They took the.
Speaker 9 (49:45):
Sounders by surprise, and that transition came too quick. So
what you're gonna see tonight is Knew who maybe holding
a little bit more because of the front.
Speaker 25 (49:52):
Three all over the top by Stephen Fry was Ken
who came off this left hand side, this near touch line,
a little dancing run between right back and center back
before I.
Speaker 8 (50:03):
Try to find it a little bit heavy.
Speaker 9 (50:05):
So that front three for San Diego, you see two
sent high. Dryer drops a little bit deeper, but at
any moment dry will pop up on either side and
then all of a sudden, del Torre pushes forward and
it's a four v four and that's where they that's
where they want to catch you. So here they're gonna
try and play out of the back. And this is
where the Sounders got caught down in San Diego. They
didn't anticipate that the transition was gonna come, and so
(50:25):
you have to stop, stop the play early the best
that you can.
Speaker 4 (50:28):
If that requires a foul, then it's a foul.
Speaker 8 (50:31):
Misplayed by Christian roll Down.
Speaker 25 (50:32):
You haven't said that too often this season in a
rock in the middle of the park because he just
shakes his head in frustration.
Speaker 8 (50:39):
But Vic til Well by Ferrara got a little toe
on the ball off the first off. It's been a
little solid.
Speaker 25 (50:47):
Central midfield play anchoring the center of the park, but
not just defensively being a shield for the back four,
but also offensively well as well. Got a goal against
the Sounders, of course, the first goal I set piece
by Schmitzer. After reviewing those goals from the last game,
(51:07):
continues to shake his head in the manner in which
they gave him goals. They're sloppy, certainly didn't sound the
game off well. And when you go to place at
San Diego with a full capacity crowd. We'll get he
comes in a minute. As Alvarado picks the ball up,
tries to flick it square, picks up by the sound
as it comes fargast, skipping by a couple of San
Diego players, finds the foot of Reznick.
Speaker 8 (51:27):
This is their side, dead left as he crossed the
half way line.
Speaker 25 (51:30):
Ball at his foot, looking forward, goes sideways and square
to Brian Kenney just drops his shoulder.
Speaker 9 (51:37):
Comes back, keeps possession. Sound is built, yeah, and that's okay.
But for San Diego, this is where they're gonna try
and catch you. Here you make one one bet pass
and then all of a sudden it seems like four
or five or in the attacking third, and this is
where they got caught. The Sounders where Knewho's pushed high,
so is Alex rolled on and then all of a sudden,
all you have is Jonathan Bell and Kim Ky he's
sitting back.
Speaker 4 (51:55):
This is what they want to do. They want to
mate you into this.
Speaker 9 (51:57):
So for the Sounders, the ball's gotta go wide, and
something's to come from wide areas what.
Speaker 25 (52:01):
Goes forward because he tries to find the slashing runner
rolled on come off that white back spot couldn't find him,
rolls through to Dos Santos, who's been a real steady
eddy player in the goal for San Diego, came in
from Miami in the offseason as Veris and the front
office staff built their squad.
Speaker 8 (52:22):
Brother there's really not eight let's call it a new
team anymore.
Speaker 25 (52:25):
That's the players who come from Europe, lots of experience,
who have experienced in MLS, so as much seems much
more of an easy prospect to hit the ground running
with the type of experience they can pick up. As
San Diego called, Ford switched the bat from Balacari too
dryer this near sight drops should towards his left. A
little back heel runner vere Hoover and has who just
(52:48):
turns out a pressure played forward by Vargas couldn't be.
Speaker 8 (52:52):
Picked up by Ken.
Speaker 25 (52:53):
But in terms of franchise, new franchise coming Saint Louis
had success in twenty three and San Diego similar success
in twenty five.
Speaker 9 (53:00):
Well, you're not going to see any more achieve us
USA teams. This league is too good to just build
a squad of who's here in this league at the time.
Speaker 8 (53:07):
You have to have it comes from Lacroi. Towards the
end line, you have to have.
Speaker 9 (53:11):
Big name players that come into this league that have
had experience at top levels throughout the world. And that's
what San Diego did. When you look at their roster,
not many players are US born or US raised. They
really tried to piece together a roster that was going
to compete in the beginning. Now they have the right
to Dream academy and that is their goal, right, Let's
get a successful team. Let's attract players that want to
play good soccer at a four to three three and
(53:32):
then we'll we'll develop those kids and hopefully they get
phased into our first team.
Speaker 8 (53:36):
You have the right to dreams. Structure that they have.
Speaker 25 (53:40):
Academy is in Ghana, Denmark, Egypt and now in San Diego,
developing players, shifting players around.
Speaker 8 (53:45):
A number of those players are in this squad. It's
gonna be a corner kick on this Nisan san Diego's
right and string at the foot of Troo. This left
foot is near who goes down? So see if there's
a class ship voters or maybe twisted the ankle. No
one knw who's okay, it's gonna get pulled up by
the referee.
Speaker 25 (54:05):
There's three San Diego players stand on the penalty spot,
matched up by three green shirts of the Sounders.
Speaker 8 (54:10):
We'll get here in the fifteenth minute.
Speaker 25 (54:11):
Neil nil Sounders San Diego corner kick San Diego and
Dryer one. I'm up in the air Instwringer's left foot in.
It goes headed clear, picked up by my top of
the box. No pressure strikes it, locked out well by Vargats,
cleared towards the halfway line and picked up by vier
hoove and he's gonna clip it into the eighteen yard box,
(54:32):
headed down by Dreyer and the assistant referees flagging.
Speaker 8 (54:36):
This near side puts his flagger. It's gonna be off side.
Sounders looking to try and get this going as we
get here in a perfect night.
Speaker 25 (54:44):
If you see pitchloom and Field Sports Radio nine fifty
KGr AM.
Speaker 8 (54:48):
If you're not here, thanks for joining us.
Speaker 25 (54:51):
When it's in the car, sits in at home and
Apple Sounders playing an early kickoff strange one for all
of us turning up to the stadium mid afternoon.
Speaker 8 (55:00):
For five point thirty kickoff.
Speaker 25 (55:01):
Here a luremin Field giving away sloppily by this sounds
picked up by Mt. Vay down this right hand side,
right in front of Brian Schmitz, who's on his feet
just asking questions of his team. I'm particularly happy right
now in the manner in which the Sounders have starts
a little sluggish.
Speaker 9 (55:16):
Yeah, I was just gonna say a little bit sluggish
in the first fifteen minutes of this one. You're at home,
you'd figure the Sounders will be pushing forward with good possession,
but so far it's been San Diego really just holding
the tempo of this game, and the Sounders it's just
that outlet pass one or two times that I've gotten
them caught.
Speaker 4 (55:30):
We've got to just be careful with the ball.
Speaker 9 (55:32):
The biggest thing you can do is when you win
the ball, the next pass has to be completed, and
it can't just be give someone the ball because they're there.
It's got to be with intent. Here you see Ryan Kent,
we win possession of the ball and then it's a
back heal flick goes back to San Diego and they're
on top of us on the eighteen.
Speaker 8 (55:48):
Its first cup left corner of the eighteen at bred
Evans mentioned back to Varad who's in for good Doy today.
Speaker 25 (55:54):
Goody has been a staple in the middle of the
parkt at at midfield three.
Speaker 8 (55:59):
He gets to rest on the bench tonight, as is
Jukie Lozano.
Speaker 25 (56:03):
D Evans mentioned big time Mexican international came back from
Europe and.
Speaker 8 (56:10):
One of the main dp's, but it was a Dryer, who's.
Speaker 25 (56:13):
The Danish DP who's taking all the ploitic six goal
seven assists on his season.
Speaker 20 (56:19):
So far.
Speaker 9 (56:21):
As you watch San Diego build, yes, it's a four
to three three. They're playing with a box in the
midfield and Dryer will drop all the way deep and
you would expect them. Then they have two strikers that
they're going to be centrally, but they're both fading really
far out wide and then they're hoping. When the ball's
built on this side, Dalla Torrea becomes a third striker
and pushes up.
Speaker 4 (56:40):
Opposite on the other side.
Speaker 8 (56:41):
They comes sound. He's picked off the ball and the
attacking third of the field just the right place to
do that. As the ball goes to Kent, don't quite
keep it in Miscontrolled by ken Well, sloppy by Bryant,
basically chases the ball, tries to get back in position
to defend his dryer just twists out of pressure. The
San Diego built top their eighteen yard box with first
off steady Eddy composed player. That's a big number six
(57:08):
part of that right to dream family. FC nordest Land
Well drives forward. Here comes San Diego inside the eighteen
yard box of the sound is cleaned up and then
ricocheted over the end line by news clearance off fer
Houbn get here in the eighteenth minute Blumenfield.
Speaker 9 (57:30):
Well, you look at Jesus, you look at Albert, and
they're kind of asking the bench like what do we
do in this situation? Because too many times any central
midfielder it's really difficult because you've got a striker that
drops all the way deep beyond halfway line, who follows him,
and then Obed doesn't know he's there, Albert doesn't know
he's there, and all of a sudden, San Diego's split
with one pass, five or six sounders and they're looking
(57:52):
at the bench for, hey.
Speaker 8 (57:53):
What do we do here? But when you're an away
team and your home team's looking for some help from
the bench, you know you've started the game in a
positive way. Samas needed to get a grip now started well,
had some chances in around the eighteen yr box was
caught out Dos Santos by Alex rolled on, but remains
nil nil rolled on has it, finds a foot of
(58:15):
Farrah good play down in the middle.
Speaker 25 (58:16):
It goes to cat top of the box, tries to
roll it out to the Ryans so I couldn't do it.
It was sworn by Navy blue shirts, and there's fear
Hoover and who runs.
Speaker 8 (58:25):
Forward as Rosack has a little slash three gifts. I
think the throwing on their side, as far as the
head coach on his feet, Henson a T shirt asking
for little help and now directing his team who have
started this game.
Speaker 9 (58:39):
Well, I was good to interchange by Jesus Ferrara and
then Ken come inside. But like you said, you see
everyone from San Diego just collapses on the inside. The
spaces there wide for the Sounders if they can isolate,
because San Diego really wants to make it tough inside
in and around the eighteen to getting any sort of
chance really from the top of the box. But if
I'm Jesus, I'm asking what if I go into halftime.
(59:01):
We're twenty minutes into this game. He's probably had two
or three touches in this one so far. How do
I you have to have coaches? How do I get
more touches on the ball, because whatever is happening, I'm
not getting enough touches.
Speaker 25 (59:13):
Good quick played by Santio through the middle of the
field again, tries to release Bombino.
Speaker 8 (59:18):
On the far sign san diegoes left, couldn't point get there.
Stephan fry scurries out of his goal and.
Speaker 25 (59:24):
Just slis and retrieves it and Sounders now build as
rothro trying to make it run on the far side
in the space that Bombino had opened up after his
rundown that left hand side couldn't find it. All goes
back to Stefan Fryar's sound has looked to try and
build his left footle awkward just clears his line safety
first picked up easy by san Diego and Sounds just unable.
Speaker 8 (59:49):
To connect the passes through foot of the field right now,
especially I'm going to playing from deeper spots.
Speaker 25 (59:56):
Sandi has put the right pressure on picking the balls up.
Big center backs are able to clean up things area is.
Speaker 8 (01:00:00):
Ball goes into my right side the box, just scuffs
his shot and pulls it wide. You need to get
a deflection off the sound as the smallest of deflections
of the endline. It goes. It's gonna be a San
Diego corner kick. San Diego start to take a grip
of this game.
Speaker 25 (01:00:17):
Fifty two percent possession for the team from Southern California.
Second corner kick of the game so far as Drea
goes over with his left foot to their left hand side,
it'll be an outswinger. Two arms go up in the air,
telling his team makes the runs to make force. Blue
(01:00:39):
shirt standing on the penalt spot ball comes in outswinger
towards McNair to Valakari back. It goes to Drey who
tries to drive it in good block by rough dropping
the sounder step up there line top of the eighteen
yard box into Albarado.
Speaker 8 (01:00:54):
It goes. They'll shimmy around the corner of his left foot.
Eventually well saved by step and fright t went down
choice left comfortable in the end for the veteran sound
As goal keep it but again San Diego tokim the door.
Speaker 9 (01:01:06):
Yeah, knocking on the doors right. It's a good corner
kick to the back post. And we said the size
from San Diego was going to be a factor in
this one, and set pieces will be important. We all
know coaches away from home, they're happy to play for
set pieces away from home.
Speaker 4 (01:01:18):
That might be the one opportunity you get in the game.
And you have to be good with the ball.
Speaker 25 (01:01:22):
When you have it, it comes sound Is and then
it's just as Brent Evans said it. I focus had
a chance to pick up a loose ball, gave it away.
Speaker 9 (01:01:29):
Balls to San Diego has been better, better tonight so
far through twenty two minutes with the ball and especially
in places where it matters right and getting an opportunity
on goal. It's fine to give the ball away, but
the Sounders are gonna do it. They got to do
it high up the field and not cause San Diego
any sort of pleasure in getting forward.
Speaker 25 (01:01:49):
Well Tonight's match is spone said by MKA Bank, the
official banking partner of Sounders FCS getting in the twenty
second minute e QC pitch lumin field, sound as nil,
San Diego nil as Kimky steps forward picks it up well.
Sounds done so well this season so far is picking
off balls and it all starts by Christian Rolled On
(01:02:12):
is having a great season in that number six or
old really anchor himself in front of that back forward
loud Far gets to release more forward which he's finding successive,
but giving away slowly by Jonathan Bell. Not what the
sound As need as they advance forward. But here comes
san Diego in transition. Something done so well as we
mentioned this year already.
Speaker 8 (01:02:31):
It's Vala Currie flicks at the far side to might
left corner, the box closed down by Kimki He and
rolled on and it goes to Dellatori and hampball by Maighten.
Referee blowncied fan diagtional sure the advantage that Grossneck has
top of his box, and then I think, thanks for
the referee. Rossneck gets clipped, goes down free kick for
(01:02:51):
the Sounders.
Speaker 9 (01:02:51):
That's what that's what San Diego does, is they bait
you in the thinking that you have time on the
ball when you really don't.
Speaker 4 (01:02:57):
Jonathan Bell gets caught there.
Speaker 9 (01:02:58):
As soon as something looks like there's a lane, san
Diego wants you to play that ball through the middle
so that they can counter attack, and then it's a
four v three on the other side. The sound is
fortunate got a handball's called on top of the box
to get out of that situation. So, like I said,
wide players on, it's on all day for the Sounders.
Speaker 8 (01:03:17):
Well brought down by right Kat brilliantly out of the
air on this left hand side now cuts in square
to Vargas tricer wriggle free, but first off comes across
wins the ball well as he has done all season long.
In the middle of the park.
Speaker 25 (01:03:29):
San Diego is putting the fun the ball and calm
the game manage in teen Pope heavy week of games
for most MLS clubs. As we get towards the end
of May, Sounders have their third game in eight days
coming up on Sunday at home against high flying Minnesota.
Speaker 4 (01:03:46):
Three.
Speaker 25 (01:03:47):
The next three games of teams Paul sitting in the
top three positions in the Western Conference, San Diego in
second tonight, Minnesota on Sunday sitting third coming into today's games,
and then Vancouver of playing a CONKERCAFF Champions Cup final of.
Speaker 8 (01:04:03):
Course, and they sit in first position.
Speaker 25 (01:04:07):
It comes San Diego now transition through the line with
Della toy to my twenty five yards from goal, both
done by rolled on.
Speaker 8 (01:04:15):
Sound is trying to slay the ball picked up my
first cuff strikes it ricochets off. I think it was
drawing Kent picked up by Stephan Fry remains no milk.
Speaker 9 (01:04:26):
Yeah, Obed Bargas looks a little slow tonight to me.
Decision making uncharacteristic of Obed and yeah, you're overrunning the midfield.
But then it just comes down to completing the next pass.
If I've got to go left and right ten times
and wait for that opportunity in front to open up
where there's a real window, then that's what I have
to do. I can't get caught turning into pressure, which
(01:04:48):
just happened a few times tonight.
Speaker 8 (01:04:51):
Sound is just sloppy. He was a given away by
new who's asking there's some help or shore.
Speaker 25 (01:04:56):
What Jonathan Bell can do with that one is managed
to save up the corner. Came at to hacking out
of playing. It's on this near side, about eight yards
or so from this near corner flag on the bottom
right corner. As we look at it, it's in the
hands of vere Hoove and the right back for San Diego.
Sound has come back to defend Venture for a bit
of a low figure up front. Roight now first five
(01:05:18):
minutes he was involved as a twenty or so, it's
been very much San Diego. I'm going to have the
chunk of the ball, a lot of fifty percent possession.
Speaker 8 (01:05:32):
He goes into front man Drea picked up by Delatroy,
goalscorer against La Galaxy this past weekend. It was almost
an instant response as there's the crowd opens up as
Fargas plays it through a little heavy too. Roth Rocker
made a slasher run down the middle. He was on look.
Speaker 9 (01:05:51):
That is the next step for ob Bargas if he's
gonna get to the next level and really be a
compar We know that he can win balls in.
Speaker 4 (01:05:57):
The midfield and be that battler.
Speaker 9 (01:05:59):
Now can he get to that next level where then
the composer is there to play that pass with the
with the right weight right, because that's a fantastic opportunity
for the Sounders. Rothrocks in he's split two defenders and
the balls just over hit into space. Quick counter attack
and now Rothrock's got to sprint back and commit a
foul twenty yards out from the eighteen.
Speaker 25 (01:06:20):
Yeah, but yellow card for his efforts. A little push
great as much frustration.
Speaker 8 (01:06:25):
Enough to not getting that ball through the middle just
a moment or so ago. It's gonna be a free
kick for e three. Scens have pulled this one back
a little deeper than we thought it was. The initial
clip of the heels.
Speaker 25 (01:06:35):
We have thirty five yards or so left of center
the foot of Drea with his left foot. Sounders holding
the top of their box for twenty seventh minute. Here
at lumin Field Neil nil sound is San Diego and
this score update is presented by pum Quadbank. There's dreat
number ten with his left foot, just to whip it
(01:06:57):
in and it goes towards the front stick headed clear by.
Speaker 8 (01:07:00):
Knew who's asking for a foul.
Speaker 25 (01:07:03):
It's gonna assistant referee flag up front offside. Sounders just
get a chance to reorganize themselves. As for Raris coming
back to have a little wood at Vargas.
Speaker 9 (01:07:14):
Yeah, I think you're saying I need the ball to
my feet. I need the ball to my feet. Yeah, yeah,
I'm quick. If the timing is right, I'll make the
run into space. Otherwise you have to think I'm coming
to show feet.
Speaker 25 (01:07:24):
Every single time sound As playing a pressure well on
the right hand side goes to Vargas, who again uncharacteristic
of Vargas, just flicks the ball out of bound. Let's
try to find new who in the space. So plating
on a different page right now. The sound as players
just not connecting the passes as.
Speaker 8 (01:07:40):
Crisply as you'd expect. All right, schmtzho he looked down
on him, just a little shake of the head.
Speaker 25 (01:07:50):
I think Steve zac Corney and his comments before the game,
and I know you provide some comments as well, mentioned
that these midweek games you have to almost like get
yourself up for it because the crowd sometimes slow to
get into the stands day ought to night.
Speaker 8 (01:08:01):
Now it's filling in a little earlier kickoff.
Speaker 25 (01:08:04):
But so those games you just gotta pick it and
you can let these ones go because three points is
three points.
Speaker 4 (01:08:09):
Yeah, look it.
Speaker 9 (01:08:10):
But at the end of the day, you got to
recognize that San Diego is a team that that waxed
the floor with you the last time you played in
San Diego. There's an opportunity to get one on them.
And then you look, you're looking up the table. It's
a team that's in second place right now, you got
an opportunity to beat that team. You're home number three.
There's no reason for this Sounders team to come out sluggish,
and I think if they go into halftime, you'd be thinking,
(01:08:31):
okay in the first half of this one, if we
just connected our passes when they were on and tried
didn't try to do too much early.
Speaker 4 (01:08:38):
On in this one.
Speaker 9 (01:08:39):
Just maintain possession and make San Diego work for it.
But it's too often been tonight as bad as LAFC,
but too many times again giving them all away cheaply.
Oh but barg us again. All of a sudden here
comes san Diego.
Speaker 25 (01:08:53):
Picked up now buying new could we then keeping away?
Ryan kentch running away and then New who's just standing there?
And San Diego have the ball ten yards from the
end line. This right hand side dropped the shoulder byte
Drya finds ver Hooven off. The ricochet from Vargas Alvarada
comes from off side position remains on side.
Speaker 8 (01:09:11):
No flag up from the assistant referee.
Speaker 25 (01:09:13):
Vera Hooven has a eighteen yards from the endline. This
right channel goes into its verset couv into dry Ha
some time to shoot.
Speaker 8 (01:09:20):
Doesn't need that type of space.
Speaker 25 (01:09:22):
No pressure from the Sanders back line was able to
turn shoot, save the end comfortably by Step and Froyt,
But another chance for san Diego in transition sloppy giveaway remains.
Speaker 4 (01:09:32):
No note.
Speaker 9 (01:09:33):
You watch that whole sequence and it was a two
second delay on if I'm gonna go step and put
pressure on the ball. You didn't see that on the
weekend here at home against Dallas. It almost seemed like
a media pressure and after three or four passes, san
Diego has to be thinking, hey, we can just pass
our way around this team, and sure enough Dryer gets
the ball, turns, is able to look up, put his
foot down and still no Sounder steps to pressure the ball.
Speaker 8 (01:09:54):
Struggle the sound is to get out of pressure and
I have a good twitch.
Speaker 25 (01:09:57):
A play by Alex rolled down to this near side,
right side to Knew, who rolls it in quickly to Rosnek,
who's been a little quite the last fifteen minutes.
Speaker 8 (01:10:05):
Need that man to get on the ball head of course.
Speaker 25 (01:10:09):
Twenty five goals twenty five assists for two different MLS
teams this past weekend, only the second player in MLS
history to do that. Steve Rolson hit that mark in
two thousand and nine New.
Speaker 8 (01:10:20):
England and Tampa Rosnak only the second player to hit that.
The ball goes into the eh and yard bucks too
well done.
Speaker 25 (01:10:29):
Turn by Ferrera and nutched off the ball by the
back line of San Diego and then cleared by Dosanto's
up high as the ball drops towards kim Key as
he lets the ball go out the far side, throwing
Sounder side.
Speaker 9 (01:10:40):
That's better from the Sounders movement off the ball number
one right, and then the weight of the pass is
what provides the Sounders with an opportunity there. Hey, sus
I think it would like that one back, a little
bit of a cleaner touch and then roth Rock. You
know that most likely San Diego is going to try
and keep possessions, so why not take a chance almost
nicks it from the goalkeeper there.
Speaker 25 (01:11:00):
See, soccer is presented by Provident, Swedish official healthcare partner.
Speaker 8 (01:11:04):
Of Sounders FC. And that's not good kim Ky. He
just holding his shin and he went down with what
appeared to be a little bit of cramp in the
last games, having a little stretch.
Speaker 9 (01:11:18):
It almost looks like his knees bothering him a little bit,
like he'll catch on the knee because the first tackle
in the game was on his right ankle.
Speaker 4 (01:11:27):
When he's got like he's fine.
Speaker 25 (01:11:29):
You know, he managed to get up, and now he
goes down and sits down. That's not good sign for Brian.
Speaker 8 (01:11:33):
So Stuart Hawkins warms up young center back.
Speaker 25 (01:11:36):
Of course, Jackson Reagan on the bench today coming back
from injury. Sure Brian didn't want to introduce him so
early in the game. Just take past the thirty minute mark.
Speaker 9 (01:11:46):
You know, he's grabbing the back of that right knee
and usually he did my meniscus once and that that's
kind of where you grab that back of that knee.
Let's hope it's just a I don't think it's a
cramp this early in this game.
Speaker 4 (01:11:59):
No way.
Speaker 8 (01:12:01):
Well, Maurica do is standing next to us. He's in
a leg brace from a tor meniscus right now. He'd
like to tell you the story on that one. I
don't think he wants a dolls on air. How he
did it and it wasn't being an athlete. May have
involved just eating dinner at a restaurant. That's what happens
when we get older. And I actually asked him if
did he get it fully falling out of the bath.
(01:12:24):
Is that worse.
Speaker 25 (01:12:25):
Yeah, but kim Ky is out now and off the
field in the farst side getting some treatment by the
medical staff.
Speaker 8 (01:12:32):
Not a good sign for Brian Schmitz as he stands
up next to the bench and he rose kind of
figure it out with Krecky and Tommy Doucher what to do.
Speaker 25 (01:12:41):
Hawkins is a little bit of backup for Jackson Reagan.
We'll just see what Brian's move will be if he'll
be Jackson early on, it looks like Stu Hawkins is
gonna be the person called up. So it looks like
the bench has got the signal from the Sounder's medical
team that Kimky cannot continue. So not good news with
(01:13:05):
the club Walk Cup coming up. Yamar off injured with
the hamstring injury two to four weeks. We've heard for Yemar,
came off the bend, came off the field in that
first half against Dallas this past weekend, and now kim
Ki he is struggling to even walk at this point
off the field. Looks like the change will happen. Stu
Hawkins getting some instructions from Andy Rose on the sidelines.
Speaker 8 (01:13:31):
Sounds needed to recalibrate themselves here as rothrow just what
the Sounders needed, a bit of hustle down that right
hand side. He's gonna win the throwing. The Sounders is
gonna step forward, take their time as we get here
in the thirty fourth minute, Sounders nil, San Diego nil,
and the change will be made as Kim Ky. He
(01:13:51):
unfortunately hobbles off towards the tunnel and young Stu Hawkins
comes on.
Speaker 25 (01:13:57):
Made his debut for the Sounders just a couple of
weeks go in LA. Now he gets a chance to
come off the bench and get a good, solid fifty
five minutes plus of time.
Speaker 9 (01:14:09):
I think he's just been called up to the national
team as well. And what an opportunity for the youngster
to jump in. I'm a little surprised you got Read
Baker on the bench. Maybe you go with the more
experienced knew Who at center back plus Read Baker out
wide left, but the Sounders elect to go with a
big center back and the young Stewart Hawkins. And like
(01:14:30):
you said, for the Sounders, now you're you're down two
of your starting center backs and we'll see what happens
with this one with Kim Key. Heat doesn't look good
if you're grabbing the back of the knee. Maybe it's
a high calf. Either way, when you can't continue, you
gotta think poor back passed by Alex rold On.
Speaker 8 (01:14:49):
Sounders don't need to be putting themselves in their own
trouble right now.
Speaker 25 (01:14:52):
Let's need to absorb, get back in the locker room,
potentially reorganize themselves. It's not been a good first thirty
five minutes here started promisingly started the Sounders on the
front foot.
Speaker 8 (01:15:03):
Just San Diego found themselves into the game since that point.
Speaker 4 (01:15:07):
Yeah, it's all about pressure.
Speaker 9 (01:15:09):
If one team is willing to put another under pressure,
it's gonna cause. It's gonna cause havoc. And the Sounders
in moments have been able to do it. But San
Diego the.
Speaker 25 (01:15:17):
Better CORNICKI comes in headed up and a way by
Jonatha Bell, not convincingly bull headed back in strike right
in the hands from McNair, slashing the bullet, found Ryan
in front of stepf fron Fryer is able to snag
it out of the air for a really good chance
for the center back for San Diego, no more than
eight yards away. Thankfully for the Sounders didn't land to
(01:15:37):
the foot of a dryer or attacking.
Speaker 8 (01:15:40):
Play like Alacaris.
Speaker 9 (01:15:46):
Now, look where the space is, Danny. You've got six
San Diego players on this side and the Sounders just
unaware and unable to switch the point of attack. And
that comes down to what are you gonna do next
with the Ball's the anticipation. The Sounders got to know
that it happened in San Diego, they watch film on it,
It's gonna happen again tonight. So how can I provide
support to a left winger in Ryan Kent when he
(01:16:07):
gets the ball, knowing that if he drops the ball
back to me, where's where's my escape valve?
Speaker 4 (01:16:12):
It's on the opposite side of the field.
Speaker 9 (01:16:14):
So you have to just know that in the game,
I gotta give myself an extra two yards back so
I can step in hit that ball first time, switch
the point of attack, and then we play.
Speaker 4 (01:16:22):
Out out of trouble.
Speaker 8 (01:16:23):
It's interesting I talked to Christian World on this week Apprentice,
and you mentioned the exact same thing. Is say I
won't have the chance to pick the ball up with
time and spread the play. It's gonna have to happen quickly.
I think his analysis before the game is very, very true,
San Diego have not given the sound As any room
to maneuver in the middle of the park.
Speaker 25 (01:16:47):
Because McVeigh just wriggles free of pressure, rolls the ball
into the foot of Vala Carte lets it go.
Speaker 8 (01:16:52):
He comes dry it down the middle.
Speaker 25 (01:16:54):
Number ten tries to flick inside of Mitain, but cross
comes new who no, we'll support the right hand sign
As he goes towards the endline with the ball turns
out a pressure, Well might try to chase him down.
Then if it feels the pressure goes down, referee gives
the foul. San Diego just asking questions of the referee
(01:17:14):
didn't feel.
Speaker 8 (01:17:14):
It was a foul, but Sounders did earn that free
kick on their right hand side, just outside the eighteen
yard box. Seven Fry will walk over and pick it up.
Speaker 22 (01:17:26):
Well.
Speaker 25 (01:17:26):
This copyright in audio casts of Major League Soccer may
not be retransmitted, reproduced, or rebroadcast without the express written
consent of Major League Soccer.
Speaker 8 (01:17:37):
Thirteenth minute here Sounders nil, San Diego nil, and this
score is presented by prominent Swedish Stephen Fry has the
ball inside his box. He's gonna drive it forward. Challenged
by Rothrock closed.
Speaker 25 (01:17:51):
Down quickly by Della Torri, who, like Ivrus mentioned as
a player that still got some ceiling to go is
he had goals into his games that he did this
past weekend against the La Galaxy, just got called back
into the national teams set up by Richio Pochettino.
Speaker 8 (01:18:11):
They come the Sounders now with Rosneck. Of course, the
national team for the USS Canada have the Gold Cup
to prepare for as the Sounders prepared for the Club
World Cup. The teams start to finish up their seasons
in Europe.
Speaker 25 (01:18:29):
Becomes Jonathan Belt picked it up, some pressure high up
the field by San Diego and Valakari. Of course they've
got the likes of Juku Lozano still on the bench
they can bring on. Sounders have some offensive five power
as well, some youthful legs in the likes of Georgie
Mnungo and of course Peeda Do la Vega, who has
been in good form this season. Had a really strong preseason,
(01:18:51):
put four goals under his belt coming out of those
games across in Spain, and then of course got good
performances in Conker Calf play before getting off to March.
Just a handful of weeks ago, Jonathan Bell picks it up.
Good play by the Sounds. Now they pick it up
the middle of the park, play the ball quickly.
Speaker 8 (01:19:12):
Split the line to Ferrera picked up by Rosnack, closed
down by four Navy Blue shirts, just as San Diego,
San Diego have done all the afternoon so far. They
swarm the Sounders players win the board.
Speaker 25 (01:19:25):
Now they come away in transition in Valacari far side
the left has some time and space goes back to
the foot of first car For now McNair sound as
eleven men behind.
Speaker 8 (01:19:37):
The ball just absorbing pressure. Here is to get here.
Speaker 25 (01:19:40):
In the fortieth minute, five minutes ago of this forty
five see all the referee adds on. Not too much
to speak of in terms of delays other than kim
Key's injury. But he went off the field quickly, cause
the referee to have to stop the game for too long.
We'll don't leave us at halftime, Jackson felt, Kellen rope
Pete feuing, we'll be back to break the first half down.
(01:20:02):
And most importantly, what does Brian Schmitzer need to say
to his team at halftime to light a fire underneath him?
Speaker 8 (01:20:09):
Just need the Sounders need to step up a year
or so, saye you got comfortable right now in possession
with Dos Santos all in yellow outside his eighteen yard box,
no stress or pressure has rolled on, goes forward, picked
up by.
Speaker 25 (01:20:22):
The Sound, is headed forward by Bell, given away and
then Valakari goes down reckless challenge by Bell inside He's attacking.
Speaker 8 (01:20:30):
Half of the field. Not a bad place to give
up a foul referee comes across. That's a quick Word's
mere Pechmich running the center of the field today. Good
game is so far by the referee hasn't got too
involved and based on some decisions would have happened over
the last month or so for the Sounders from the
(01:20:52):
referee contingent and I'll take that all day long. There's
dryer switching the point of attack from this side of
the feet or to the far side. Fixed by Bombino
was getting some looks from Europe.
Speaker 25 (01:21:03):
Now as the young left back. The sound has swarm
this time in their green shirts. When the ball goes
back to Fry and launches it forward.
Speaker 8 (01:21:13):
Up towards the halfway line, flick forward by Albarado and
then Valacari and closed down by roth Rock. They had
a roll down Alex turns out.
Speaker 25 (01:21:23):
A pressure well as Delatroy closes it down and Jonathan
Bell rolls it into Rosnick, adding to his seven goals tonight.
Speaker 8 (01:21:31):
It would be ideal for the Sounders. He's been the
main man in terms of goals for the Sounders as
Albert Rosneck.
Speaker 25 (01:21:38):
He's been involved in all of the games where the
Sounders scored and the last five. The only game where
they didn't score was that four zero loss down in La.
Speaker 8 (01:21:49):
He scored the last two games against Pauland and Dallas
and then two goals against Houston.
Speaker 25 (01:21:55):
Of course, the opening goal against Saint louis the four
one win here at field as the ball goes into
the box clear by Hawkins with the outside of his
right foot and it's near side crowning quickly by Vere
Hoover back to Alvarado has had a steady eddy game
so far in for good doing that midfield. Now he
gets the balls, takes off in it for a split second,
but flips it inside, goes back to the first calf
(01:22:18):
who rolls it back to mcvate.
Speaker 8 (01:22:20):
Sound as left men behind the board.
Speaker 25 (01:22:22):
Get here in the final two and a half minutes
of the forty five fourth lineup of games across MLS today.
Most of the Western Conference teams are involved in games
later this evening, Dallas playing Cincinnati away from home to
to So far Cincinnati.
Speaker 8 (01:22:42):
And Dallas Sounders defending.
Speaker 25 (01:22:47):
Now inside there half of the field, Sandy Ego have
the ball on the right inside with Vere Hoover.
Speaker 8 (01:22:54):
See what changes in tweets Brian Schmizer makes. Of course
you mentioned for third game in eight days coming up
on so.
Speaker 25 (01:23:01):
Mid afternoon game against Minnesota when Eric Ramsey has found
some real form as he starts to mold the squad
and the team that he wants. Came in just after
start the season last year from Manchester United, the young
head coach for Minnesota. But here comes san Diego down
the left hand side inside the box, goes mine and
just drops the left should towards his right foot, strikes.
Speaker 27 (01:23:23):
It brilliant say by cry, then overhead kick clers by
new strong left hand by step and fry.
Speaker 8 (01:23:34):
It remains nil nil, but San Diego have the ball.
Speaker 25 (01:23:36):
They continue to knock on the Sounders door, trying to
find that opening goal.
Speaker 8 (01:23:41):
More goes towards It was Alvarado who just slip goes
over the end line. It's gonna be a goal kick.
Speaker 25 (01:23:48):
For the Sounders sot to inch towards the forty five
minute mark. As you mentioned, some big games Minnesota on
the road, West Coast play Vancouver this evening and then
of course come back to Seattle on the weekend. Let's
(01:24:09):
play the Sounders. Sounders ten nine games out next to
eleven will be at home. That includes Club World Cup matches.
Let's remind everybody Voda Fogo Champions of South America, Brazilian powerhouse.
Speaker 8 (01:24:24):
They're gonna be the first.
Speaker 25 (01:24:25):
Group game for the Sounders here at Luminfield, followed quickly
thereafter by Athletic Co Madrid, one of those story clubs
in Europe, of course, with Diego Simeone at the helm,
the best.
Speaker 8 (01:24:36):
Part of a decade and a half. And then of
course we finish it up with the third group game.
Speaker 25 (01:24:40):
Here at Seattle against Harry San jermain I, likeably the
best team in the world right now playing the Champions
League Final.
Speaker 8 (01:24:49):
There's coming Saturday, they come San Diego. Try to unlock
before the halftime.
Speaker 25 (01:24:54):
Whistle down go Stu Hawk, It's good tackle top of
the wall, just scoots his right foot. Is Rathrop tries
to twist out of pressure on Beto brings the Sounders
right midfielder down for a free kick for the Sounders.
Speaker 8 (01:25:05):
And look down on the board. The fourth official puts
up one minute, so to be expected, not too much
added on by the referee. Sounders take that. Get back
in the locker room. Brian Schmitz will have some words,
I'm sure, reorganize and see what tweets he can make
sho that midfield if we get Roznak on the board,
(01:25:27):
if we get Fargas ticking. Of course Jesu's Ferreira love
to get him off the market.
Speaker 25 (01:25:33):
Today's game five assists on his campaign so far, coming
in from FC Dallas where it spent his entire career,
and it comes Russnick.
Speaker 8 (01:25:42):
Can he find an opening in this final minute or
so of the game.
Speaker 25 (01:25:48):
Bryan Kent just tries to wriggle out of pressure, but
clowes down by two Navy Blue shirts, flicked out of
bound by Alvarado, and that might just be about that
as who rolls over throws it in. Referee puts the
whistle to his mouth, brings this first half to a close,
and not letus speak on this first half.
Speaker 8 (01:26:06):
The best chance for the Sounders came up the foot
of Alex rolled on miss clearance by Dos Santos in
the San Diego goal. Alex Rod could quite find the opening,
made the save and then on the other end he
was Steph and Fry who made the strong left handed save.
Speaker 25 (01:26:24):
To deny San Diego the opening goal. Although leave us,
we'll take a short break, Jackson.
Speaker 8 (01:26:30):
Felt, Kelen Rowe and Pete Fewick We'll be back to
break everything down. But halftime.
Speaker 25 (01:26:35):
Here at EQC Pitcher Lumanfield, on a perfect evening for
a game of football, it's Sounders nil San Diego mill.

Speaker 3 (01:30:11):
Here at the half between the Seattle Sounders and San Diego.
Here at a beautiful loomin field tonight. We welcome in
into the halftime show. Jackson feltz Kellen wrote and p
fewing the Sounders not too much to speak of there
in that first half. There was a possible handball on
San Diego in the seventh minute. Looked like it came
off the shoulder as opposed to the.
Speaker 4 (01:30:29):
Arm, so no penalty for the Sounders.
Speaker 3 (01:30:32):
There a big save from Stephen Frying the forty third minute,
but also important to note Kim key He in the
thirty fourth minute going down with an injury. Stuart Hawkins,
the young center back, has come onto the field for
him to replace the injured Kim Kye. Let's get some
opening thoughts there. On the first forty five minutes, Kellen,
what did you see a.
Speaker 4 (01:30:50):
Little lack lust?
Speaker 5 (01:30:50):
You're a little you know, maybe it's because it's an
early game, maybe if it's hot out, maybe because they
haven't really seen each other, or you have a little
bit of a of a change. I guess you would
say in some sense of line up. But it wasn't
much there for the first half for me, for the Sounders.
Speaker 6 (01:31:04):
The attacking third we didn't really get going very well.
For I had to make three saves. The last one
in about the forty third minute was the best one.
He made me keep a clean sheet. I like that
we're at a clean sheet considering the last time we
played this team. But San Diego is dangerous. They are
again very good coming out of the back. They're very
good when they're on the attack. So I think right
(01:31:26):
now now it's a forty five minute game which stepped
down a little bit better quality in that attacking third.
Speaker 3 (01:31:32):

(01:36:17):
we're your keys the second half, and what can Brian
Schmitzer do with his bench after having already made one substitution, joh,
which is Stuart Hawkins for kim Key heat.
Speaker 5 (01:36:26):
You know, it's defense first. We talked about it off air.
It's got to keep that clean sheet. Is if you're
positive about that first half. I would like it for
seven Fry not to have to make some amazing saves
like he already has done in that forty third minute,
like you said, but he was defense first.
Speaker 4 (01:36:40):
Come out of here with a clean sheet.
Speaker 6 (01:36:42):
Yeah, the last two games, we've given up a lot
of shots from the edge of the box. For I
was not happy last week this one. It didn't get
after the guys as much, but they are getting too
many chances.
Speaker 8 (01:36:52):
So and I'm with you.
Speaker 6 (01:36:52):
I think keep the clean sheet. If he got out
of here with a point based on what this is
the number two team in the league, right so Georgie
I think could help. Pedro I think could help. I
don't know if he goes to Danny Massovski, if he feels,
you know, like he can do something. Kellen said a
moment ago that if you went to five at the back,
(01:37:13):
maybe Jackson Reagan. But I think Stewart's come off. He's
done okay, He's had a couple of opportunities to clear balls,
defend well. If he's in the rhythm of the game,
you might not change it.
Speaker 5 (01:37:24):
And the white horse for me, it's got to be
Kilanie and I think you could see him less as
an outside back but more of a midfielder role to
kind of solidify that back line, give that outside winger
or they outside.
Speaker 4 (01:37:34):
Back a little help and then let the guys up
top do their thing.
Speaker 3 (01:37:37):
Danny Jackson Brad Evans will have the call for the
second half. It's zero zero here between the Sounders and
San Diego FC. The second half will start next on

Speaker 25 (01:41:11):
Rosn't that got on the score sheet, got that one
nil win Sounders. I've got clean sheets so far, but
it hasn't been the best first half.
Speaker 8 (01:41:18):
Branch Metz would have used all his words of wisdom.
Speaker 25 (01:41:22):
At halftime to figure out a way through this resilient
San Diego group. Get A couple of changes have happened already.
Trick Lozano did come on for San Diego. They made
the change of half times. We'll get to those lineups
in a couple of moments the Sounders get us going
(01:41:42):
knock it long, then cleared by McNair one and forced
substitution for the Sounders in that first half Kimki he
went down.
Speaker 8 (01:41:53):
Had to come off, and then young Stu Hawkins comes
on the field.
Speaker 25 (01:41:59):
Pretty sure safe to say that he might be the
first ever player from Fox Island to play in the MLS.
Speaker 8 (01:42:07):
Maybe I'll be proved wrong, but so far, so good
for the young Stu. But it's debut just a couple
of weeks ago. Now gets a chance to get a
good fifty five minutes of play under his belt. Senego
have the ball.
Speaker 25 (01:42:22):
They're playing in all navy blue tonight, attacking the goal
to our left the north end, and then sound As
in the anniversary Kid Queen shirt, blue shorts, white socks,
they're attacking the goal to our right the south end
as Sandego have it deep on the right hand side
with vere Hoover tries to wriggle free of new who.
(01:42:44):
Referee calls a free kick on vere Hoover and it's
had a little pull of the shirt of new Who.
Sound As will build hopefully pick up the tempo a
little bit this second half, So let's get you the
lineup for the Sounders coming out here in that in
the first from the first half, Stephan fry goal no
(01:43:04):
changes back forth rolled on Stu Hawkins, Jonathan Bell and
knew Who Christian Waldan alongside obed middle of the park.
Rothrock runs at Kent and then Jesus Ferrera up front.
Speaker 8 (01:43:17):
Sue Hawkins launched the ball down.
Speaker 25 (01:43:19):
As nearside the right clash of bodies between roth Rock
and Bombing the the young left back. The ball goes
back to De Santos just sneaks it past Jesues Frero's
pressuring inside the box.
Speaker 8 (01:43:32):
San Diego in the foot of McNair former Man United,
middlesbrough Man middlesbrough Man as well and Sunderland player who
just got promoted to the Premier League and the Championship playoff.
All goes through the Middlers. Stephen Frye comes sliding out.
(01:43:54):
So let's get you the lineup coming out for this
second half for San Diego.
Speaker 25 (01:43:59):
One chain for Nikey Virus and his team nor sand
doesn't goal via Hooven, McVey, McNair, bombino E back four
Albarado's first calf Della Toia are your midfield three, and
then it's gonna be dryer. Their top goal scorer of
six goals Valacari, and then main man DP Chucky Lozano
(01:44:21):
comes on for Alex Miighten. He'll play on that left
hand side. All score of course against the Sounders and
then three.
Speaker 8 (01:44:28):
Zero win as he goes through now cushioned headed back
by Alex Rolda managed to clean things up. Chuck Lozano
made a quick run from the left through the middle,
almost caught out the Sounders back line.
Speaker 25 (01:44:42):
But Brad will get your comments coming out. You've been
in a well, sure we'll get your comments.
Speaker 8 (01:44:46):
Just second as this Roldan gives it up, but he
drives the ball forward. Sister referees flag goes offside on Perrera.
Speaker 25 (01:44:54):
But you've been in plenty of halftime team talks from
Brian Schmatz, so once he said to his team to
get them.
Speaker 8 (01:44:58):
Going, it feels like he bit of a light.
Speaker 9 (01:45:01):
Well usually that I interview Schmant's at halftime, and this
time I didn't even grab the microphone because I knew
the request would be denied. So if that's any indication
of what was said at halftime, and you know, the
guys that were in the locker room came out pretty late,
only like three minutes before the second half started, so
I'd imagine it was a full team talk of hey,
if you want to be here, you better show up
(01:45:22):
on the field because this team's running all over us.
Speaker 25 (01:45:24):
Right now, ball goes in behind Sep friend Fry, who's
really been the best player and the Sounder shirt in
that first half.
Speaker 8 (01:45:30):
So big time saves the shit that strong left arm,
left handed saved. Right towards the end of that first
half comes sliding.
Speaker 25 (01:45:37):
Out rolls the ball out sound is habit far side
the left with Rosneck, and you know when Rosneck's sliding
left and right to white areas, it's not getting enough
for the ball as Ryan Kent trusted.
Speaker 8 (01:45:50):
Dance rounds first off picked up by the San Diego
midfield and now the foot of De La Troy. So
Brian Schetz has.
Speaker 25 (01:46:02):
Got some upach's on the bench, but it's probably to
look at his players now. The experience group on the
field is trying and change the turn things around.
Speaker 9 (01:46:07):
Yeah, look at and these guys gotten about twenty minutes
in this one before Schmitz starts to pull the trigger.
Speaker 4 (01:46:13):
And it's a tough one.
Speaker 9 (01:46:14):
Right, you lose a center back and Kim Key he
young Stuart Hawkins has to come on and on the
flip side, San Diego is able to sub in Lozano,
so it's.
Speaker 4 (01:46:20):
Gonna be on.
Speaker 9 (01:46:21):
Alex rolled On is really the most experience out of
that back line with Nuhu, So they're gonna have to
really cover for both center backs and Jonathan Bell and Stuart,
especially with the Zano on the field because he always
provides something special and it's a lot faster than I
think people realize. And Stuart not known for his speed
positionally good in the air, good, but when you're talking
about a Lozano versus a Stuart Hawkins on any moment,
(01:46:45):
you gotta take Chooky in those moments. So it's gonna
be cover from the outside backs throughout the remainder of
this second half.
Speaker 8 (01:46:53):
You have eight shots for San Diego.
Speaker 25 (01:46:57):
Yeah, first off, one shot for the sound tells the
story right there in terms of the first half.
Speaker 8 (01:47:03):
But it's Neil nil He.
Speaker 25 (01:47:05):
Sounds all the opportunity now to try and break through
his He had the ball far side the left with
Ryan Ken closed down by Vie Hoop and then Alvarada comes.
Speaker 8 (01:47:13):
Back to help as he falls over the ball. Felt cool.
It almost felt like he stumbled on the ball. The
referee got the amount of jail a little bit on
that one, but he snacked his foot on the turf.
Speaker 9 (01:47:26):
Yeah, once again, just like Portland, right the first half
of that Portland game. It's the move, it's the move,
and then all of a sudden it's a little bit
too much dancing and yeah it's a foul in the
end there. But a couple of times to night already,
Ryan Kench is not able to find really some fluidity
in this game and really build that confidence and get forward.
Speaker 25 (01:47:46):
And make an impact sound as half of a free kick.
And it's that pieces maybe the breakthrough here as he
was against.
Speaker 8 (01:47:55):
Dallas for the penalty spot. The sime's a free kick one.
Speaker 25 (01:47:58):
I'm up in the air by Rozneck twenty five yards
or so from the end line, left channel, entwering of
his right foot in it goes plared by verst gov
Broll bounced all the way back to Alex Roldan's gonna
switch the point of attack from this near sight to
the vast side to Rusnak holding his position taking that
free kick, tries to clip it in easy headed clears
by Alvarado and it come San Diego now full counter
(01:48:22):
tac mode as Dryer runs forward, overlapping run by Valakari
tries to find the ball as a clash of bodies
between rolled On and Chucky Lozano, Alex remonstrating with the
referee there should be a foul maybe on a Sounders player.
Speaker 8 (01:48:37):
The referee set six of one and half a dozen
of the other no foul given.
Speaker 9 (01:48:40):
Sounders have possession, a good defending but on that free kick,
how do the Sounders have four players back outside of
the box and then all of a sudden, it's a.
Speaker 4 (01:48:47):
Three v two for San Diego.
Speaker 9 (01:48:51):
It's about organization, It's about communication and thinking worst case
scenario in every single moment it comes.
Speaker 8 (01:48:59):
The sound is now on the right hand side as
Jos Santos comes out of the goal.
Speaker 25 (01:49:04):
Refree flag eventually goes out. There's that delayed play, so
let's the play happen. Ball gets cleared and now he
calls you off side. It was Perera just snuck a
yard or two behind the back line. It's gonna be
a free kick for San Diego.
Speaker 7 (01:49:19):
Well.
Speaker 25 (01:49:19):
Tonight's match is sponsored by m Quadbank the official banking
partner of Sounders FC. Early on in this second half,
fifty third minute Sounders nil San Diego nil, Sports Radio
nine am.
Speaker 8 (01:49:36):
Driving back from work or back from practice with the kids.
Speaker 25 (01:49:40):
It's for joining us Sounders, And I got some cob
webs to shake off after that first half.
Speaker 8 (01:49:47):
We know they've got some enigmatic and exciting players on
the bench, and like Sir Pedro de la Vega, Georgia Menungo,
of course Paul gets thrown inside.
Speaker 25 (01:49:59):
Pressures by San Diego to wait if that baiting them
in as Brad Evans had mentioned a couple of times,
in the way that San Diego defending that middle part
of the field, sound is just backing off eleven men
behind the ball, but they're just slowly but surely approaching
the center circle.
Speaker 8 (01:50:17):
Now plays at square to his teammate.
Speaker 25 (01:50:18):
McVay was able to skip by in three green shirts,
splits the lines, finds Delatory comes onto his weaker right
foot clips It ain't goodball as Drea comes through, slashes
across on that right hand side. You couldn't get a
good touch on the ball, whether it's a shot or
control to bring it down.
Speaker 8 (01:50:34):
But snuck through is good delivery by Delatory sound has
come again.
Speaker 9 (01:50:39):
It's a really good ball from Delatoria, and you see
the different class at different level there in a great run.
When you have willing runners you can take those chances.
You have to trust that the run's gonna be there.
Speaker 8 (01:50:48):
The trust.
Speaker 9 (01:50:51):
You now the ball's gonna come. And once again San
Diego just baiting the center baction. Sounders to think like
there's an opening. All of a sudden it closed down.
And if I'm in this position as a center back,
I'm just gonna connect left to right. I don't need
to make the game as a center back for the Sounder.
If you have enough playmakers all throughout the field. You've
got Roo Snack, You've got Ryan Kent, Oh, Ben Varga
(01:51:13):
r Let these guys make the game. Your job is
just to connect back to front and side to side
and defense, most importantly.
Speaker 8 (01:51:21):
Keep glean sheet. It's one of those games almost feels
like an away game for the Sounder, somewhat in terms
of the manner of which San Diego are possessing the
ball and.
Speaker 25 (01:51:31):
Challenging the sound as back client. Stephan Fry best player
on the park so far, as you mentioned, San Diego
coming into this game in second position.
Speaker 8 (01:51:43):
Just mentioned full slate of games in the Western Conference
and the Eastern Conference, a well of big wins for
some teams. Houston on the road at New York winning
three nail.
Speaker 25 (01:51:53):
They come the sound is can I find an opening
here with Ryan Kent look, drop on the shoulder, George's
left foot thinks it to the back post. Nobody there
bounces through, cleared by Bombino towards Luzano drops the ball
off well, nice and clean in his touch and his
plays its first Cough has it and then Deltroit nice
ball splits the lines to the big number six.
Speaker 8 (01:52:15):
First clf returns and plays.
Speaker 9 (01:52:17):
It to Valakari.
Speaker 25 (01:52:18):
No pressure on the ball on this left hand side
strikes forward. Lozano to his left, gets the ball now
top of the box, tries to switch the point of
attack Aaron Ball Sounds will take that good pressure by
the back line, goes out fast side, throwing forward Town.
Speaker 9 (01:52:32):
It's the Sounder's best attack so far in this game.
But it's because of the switch of the point of attack,
and you're able to find that little slip ball to
Albert Rusnak and then he spreads it even further wider
and we all knew that the ball was going to
be chipped in and Paul Rotherrot takes his chance, thinking
that it's gonna come on the ground early.
Speaker 4 (01:52:50):
It's just over his head.
Speaker 9 (01:52:51):
But in the matter of seconds it's San Diego FC
all the way down in the Sounders half.
Speaker 8 (01:52:58):
Good step by Christian Wild good at tackle. Little pop
Alvarado goes down, so does Rosno. Referee is holding things
up rightever's asking for the game to go. It's a
couple of changes for Brian Schwitzer. There's a great note
kim Ky heat off the field in the first half
half injury.
Speaker 25 (01:53:18):
It sounds like I thought it might be something with
the knee. So good news for the sound is hopefully
nothing too serious. Lost games coming thick and fast in
the next couple of weeks. With Club World Cup on
the horizon.
Speaker 8 (01:53:29):
Danny Massovski, Pedro della Vega get ready to come on.
Can maybe the change the Brian schmanzanes as he gives
the final instruction. So's two attacking players that.
Speaker 25 (01:53:42):
He's gonna introduce to the game here, try and change
things up. Comfortable so far for San Diego remains nil nil.
Speaker 8 (01:53:49):
Coach fifty eighth minute down the line, he goes to
rough Rock can you get there first? Whips it in
his Ferrera turns.
Speaker 28 (01:53:56):
Strikes the news for Fererra. He gets off the mark
for the Sounders, his first goal in NLS play for
his new club, and what a time to do it.
Speaker 8 (01:54:11):
Sound is won San Diego, Nail Foo.
Speaker 9 (01:54:14):
All you can say is finally, finally, finally. I got
chills from that one just seeing it, what it meant
to him. He's brushing off the shorts.
Speaker 4 (01:54:21):
You brush it off.
Speaker 9 (01:54:22):
You see the smile on the face, similar to the
one in the first half where he gets that touch
from outside play. So it comes out here to Alex
rolled On and that's the run that you have to
have Rothrock, and it's the first time ball and then
that little touch with the outside of the right foot
turns bottom left.
Speaker 4 (01:54:36):
Corner, snuck right past the keeper.
Speaker 9 (01:54:38):
It's a great ball from Rothrock and an even better
touch and he looks up to see if he can
lay it off top of the box. The the center
back nowhere to be found, and that's a striker right there.
Speaker 6 (01:54:47):
Bottom corner.
Speaker 9 (01:54:48):
Doesn't even have to hit it inside the post, just
put it on frame and look, you see how much
it means to him.
Speaker 4 (01:54:53):
Everyone get off me.
Speaker 9 (01:54:54):
Finally, he says, get the demons off of me. Put
the ball in the back of the neck, and added
nothing tonight from the Sounders is a good attacking movement
and the ball's in the back of the neck.
Speaker 8 (01:55:07):
Well, Masovski and Pedro Olivago are ready to come on.
Ran Schmetz saw the goal and then he's pushed them
back to the bench. The Pinnies go back on. We're
gonna give Ferira a few more minutes to run this
one out. Really good finish. Didn't look like a player
who had anxiety or apprehension. And now the Sounders go again.
(01:55:27):
Ball goes into Ryan Ken Perira goes again, hanging out
on this right hand side.
Speaker 25 (01:55:31):
Now he gets the ball right corner of the eighteen
yard box, goes back to Russneck strikes it.
Speaker 8 (01:55:37):
I want to save by De Santos. Say what a save.
Speaker 27 (01:55:41):
It was a pop shot from twenty five yards right
of center by Russnak and he jumped up on De
Santos and he managed to get a strong right hand.
Speaker 8 (01:55:50):
And somehow get it over the top. Cornergick.
Speaker 25 (01:55:52):
Sounders remains one Nilsnack get a really good chance to make.
Speaker 4 (01:55:56):
It too well, you hear what it means.
Speaker 9 (01:55:57):
The crowd's into this one now and that's all it
takes is a little bit of energy. Ball goes in
the back of the net and it's confidence at the
end of the day and the Sounders another good counter attack.
And you often watch these say I went out to
practice last week and they have this little bumper machine
with all these little knobs, and Tommy is just smashing
balls into this bumper on the ground that pop up
and the ball goes wherever it might and do Santos
(01:56:19):
with a similar save down to us right pops up
over the.
Speaker 8 (01:56:22):
Goal in swinging corner kick. Baul goes in. Stu Hawkins
goes up. Looks like him off good Doy, Yes he did,
Goody just coming on the field. Just a moment to
go for Alvarado. Does it change for San Diego as
they try and.
Speaker 25 (01:56:37):
Make a move somewhagainst someone to play for The Sounders
will take that all day long, especially off the foot
of Jesus Ferrera, prolific in FC Dallas over a number
of years, and now he gets his first goal in
MLS play for his new club the Sounders.
Speaker 8 (01:56:55):
What a good finish it was too.
Speaker 25 (01:56:58):
The Sounder is at to a corner kick, Brian Can
runs away, Rosnack's gonna enswing at his right foot, blow
towards the front post.
Speaker 8 (01:57:04):
Heady Claarby's first cup hits by Dryer, far sight. San
Diego's right. They build with Delatroy, driven ball forward, not
messing around, tries to switch the point of attacks on
it was here. It's gonna cleaned up by Alex Roldock.
Speaker 9 (01:57:19):
We still see San Diego's willingness to just play out
of the back, but when they do feel trouble, the
ball's gotta go long, and that's the release of pressure.
Speaker 8 (01:57:28):
What goes long? Rothrock just wriggles free, sitting on a
yellow card, needs to be a little bit quiet. Probably
a move. It seems like Rothrot would be maybe the
obvious choice. You'd you asked you Brad for adela Vega
Or is it Ken maybe preparing for this weekend's games.
Speaker 9 (01:57:48):
Yeah, I think it'll probably be Ryan Kent and Pedro
will come on here on the right side, put Rothrock
on the left. Rothrock didn't I mean one of the surprises, right,
He was a surprised last year, but continues to be
the workhorse for Schmetzer, and he trusts his tactical awareness
and most importantly, he trusts his work rate. Right, he's
gonna be the guy that's gonna track back. Very rarely
do you see Alex rolled On in a two B
(01:58:10):
one situation. And then it's the ability to get forward
as well, and I think you lose that if you
go Ryan Kent and Pedro.
Speaker 4 (01:58:16):
At this point in the game, ball.
Speaker 8 (01:58:17):
Gets whipped in and headed clear by Alex rolled On.
It was a ball on the right hand side by
it was fear Hooven played it towards the back stick,
towards Lozano. Now he's gonna go short balls on the
corner stick to Lozano, whips it in, cleared by goalscorer Ferrera.
Nothing forward for Kent. He's gonna hold up play. He
(01:58:39):
should maybe go left, conquer the ball away up there.
Bren Schmetz is not gonna like that.
Speaker 25 (01:58:45):
As rold On goes down pull Down's first off, it
comes San Diego with Lozano down this near side to
the left, eighteen yard from the endline. Drops the left
shoulder comes on his right goes back to Della Tory
with his right foot. Now, good doyt, I mean international
of course, many years down in San Jose, the ball
gets flicked in dropped down sound is clear that lines
(01:59:09):
all came from that giveaway unnecessarily in the middle of
the pub.
Speaker 9 (01:59:11):
Right, Yeah, that's where, like we said, San Diego wants.
But that's where Ryan Ken has to be more complacent.
He's just gotta trust his runners, he says, Jesus running
into space. He's got Rothrock. Those are willing runners that
are gonna do the job. Just knock that ball into space.
And then you don't lose the ball in the middle
of the pitch you use. You lose it in your
attacking third, which is no problem. The sounders can get set.
(01:59:31):
It's when you turn her over in the middle of
the pitch that guys aren't organized enough, thinking that everyone's
gonna attack, and then all of a sudden you get punished.
And it's a well worked play. Juby Lozano finds a
little dink on the inside. You'll knock down header. Sounders
do well to clear it up.
Speaker 8 (01:59:47):
It's a Lasky on. It's like Valocari off. Sometimes you
don't get these natural changes. But the players are in
the other start of the field. They have ten seconds
to get off, so they go off at any side
of the field.
Speaker 25 (01:59:59):
Now the so you gotta scan the field about who's
come off. You will switch around Stu Orchids has it.
We'll get a confirmation of that. We'll goes back to Cuculazana.
What shifts out to the far side the right?
Speaker 8 (02:00:18):
What goes into Drea turns out a pressure right corner
of the box.
Speaker 25 (02:00:25):
It's first gop in support. If he goes from first
GoF to the far side, first off has it. Number
six available plays into the right. Sounders hanging just inside
their eighteen yard box. It's defending their goal now so
far Severn fright quiet in the second half, which exactly what.
Speaker 8 (02:00:46):
The Sounders wanted to get hit the sixty fifth minutes,
McNair drives forward the big center back because San Diego
Sounders when at top of their box. Now come away
with it with rough Rock because he drives forward.
Speaker 9 (02:01:00):
It's well done by Paul. Rob Rock notices the pressure.
I was just gonna say how tight San Diego was
coming over to this side. And that's a switch that
you want Knew who gives the ball away. Ryan Kentz
just run out of gas in this one. I think
he who thinks he's gonna be the runner to be
checks for feet. But then that what I told Ryan
kent last week was that is gonna be the relationship
(02:01:21):
that you're gonna have to build on this team. Everyone
else is pretty predictable. It's gonna be the relationship between
you and knew Who that's gonna have to be developed
because Knew Who is the most unpredictable team on the
player on the on the team. I would say that's
gonna be his biggest challenge moving forward and training and
in these games all goes in.
Speaker 8 (02:01:39):
Top of the bucks.
Speaker 25 (02:01:40):
We strike from the sup to say, but left foot
of Stephan Frey went down to his right, took a
wicked deflection, stuck out his left.
Speaker 8 (02:01:47):
Foot, and goodness, what a save that was.
Speaker 4 (02:01:50):
I mean, what did I tell you? That's exactly what
they did last week?
Speaker 9 (02:01:53):
When Tommy smashes the ball in, Yeah, Steph thinks it's
going one way, it hits off this little bumper and
all of a sudden gets sent and that's that's incredible
right there. It's a hockey save. At its finans, you
lift the leg center of gravity. I mean, just imagine
you're standing in one position, you go to push snink
in its one way, and then all of a sudden
you have to almost stop yourself, stick that leg up
and make a fantastic set well, the crowd.
Speaker 25 (02:02:15):
On their feet, giving Haesus Freer the evation that he
deserves first goal for the Sounders. Off he comes, on,
comes Danny Mussovski, Brian Kent makes way for Pedro de
la Vega, and it will make one correction. It was
delatory off Elosky on Belakari sitting in the middle.
Speaker 2 (02:02:37):
Two changes for sound.
Speaker 25 (02:02:41):
It's gonna be a goalkick for the Sounders, driven forward
by Stephen Fry towards Mussovski, of course, had that wonderful
run of goals, and that's something that Ferrera can now
look to.
Speaker 8 (02:02:51):
Five goals out five straight games for Mussovski came to
an end, LAFC where to set the bench to try
and be ready for the weekend game against Portland's all
whipped in, cleared by rolled on. Now it comes to
Rossnick for five goals in the last five games for
(02:03:12):
Albert Rossnick.
Speaker 25 (02:03:14):
He just gets his pocket pick middle of the park,
reverse ball by its first cough.
Speaker 8 (02:03:20):
To losky Town to Lozano on this near side the left,
towards the corner flag.
Speaker 25 (02:03:24):
He goes the playards from the end line, double team
with Della Vaga back. He goes to Bombino, comes off
the shoulder of far I guess over the end line.
Speaker 8 (02:03:34):
It's gonna be a corner kick for San Diego.
Speaker 25 (02:03:36):
Remains sounders one San Diego nil here in the sixty
eighth minute.
Speaker 9 (02:03:39):
Well, you have to say the difference in a San
Diego FC versus FC Dallas. When FC Dallas came in here,
it almost looked like, yes, they want to play out
of the back, but then they didn't know what to
do afterwards. And now you watch the San Diego team
with a real style of play, and it's actually really
fun to watch and a great challenge.
Speaker 25 (02:03:55):
Balls all comes in, whipped in and headed cleared by Christian,
rolled on, picked up by Dryer, dry forward.
Speaker 8 (02:04:04):
Left corner of the box. Now flicks it with his
left foot, picked.
Speaker 25 (02:04:07):
Off by the sound as there comes de la Vega
away from pressure. It challenges by three four five Navy
Blue Shirts loses the ball.
Speaker 8 (02:04:17):
Brian Schmetz. Hear the whistle.
Speaker 25 (02:04:18):
That's Brian Schmitz asking for his teammates, his team to
get back in defend ball top of the box. Then
it goes to Valacari left corner of the eighteen yard box,
back to its verskov challenged by Delaveaga top the box.
He goes to the good doin back to Valacari. Overlapping
run by Bombino. Valacari goes drops his shoulder. Fargas challenging
now pushes him back back line of Sounders and the
(02:04:42):
Green Shirts can now steps top of the box as
the ball goes all the way back to McNair and.
Speaker 8 (02:04:48):
The halfway line. San Diego in possession, Sounders leading one
goal to nil. He approached the seventy minute mark. Sounder
is leading one nil and this corporate is presented by
Qua Bank.
Speaker 25 (02:05:01):
Valakari has it, cuts it top of the box of Bombino,
clips towards the back stick. It bounces through Cadrea that
to Viehooven such towards the black stick and it was
a stretch headed by Lozano.
Speaker 8 (02:05:14):
You couldn't get anything on it. Picked up by Fry
and they quickly throw now closed down by Mortinez is
going to be a throw in for the Sounders.
Speaker 9 (02:05:23):
Look it's ultimately it's good defending from the Sounders. San
Diego's got a lot of possession on this left hand side.
You can see that they want to come to Chuokey
after coming on the field, and then they do a
good job of really just not overstepping pushing the ball,
and then San Diego's gotta go all the way back
to their center backs and find.
Speaker 4 (02:05:38):
An outlet on the other side. And it's good defending
in the in the end from the Sounders.
Speaker 25 (02:05:43):
The Sounders FC socket is presented by prominent Swedish official healthcare.
Speaker 8 (02:05:48):
Partner of Sounders FC.
Speaker 25 (02:05:52):
You mentioned Sounders back here at Luminfield mid after your
kickoff against Minnesota, riding high this year as our San Diego.
Speaker 8 (02:05:59):
Minnesota is sitting third coming into tonight's.
Speaker 25 (02:06:02):
Games and it comes Christian rolled on driving forward, tracked
well by in Lasky back he goes to Vargas. Get
more composed of this second half, Alex to della Vega.
Speaker 8 (02:06:14):
Clows down by Bombino, look given go and then turns
the corner, defending well by San Diegos. Ball goes back
just too.
Speaker 25 (02:06:22):
Hawkins almost gets caught and it's just a little slow
by Stoop.
Speaker 8 (02:06:27):
A little softball byke Alex rolled On. Refree is asking
for it looked like there was maybe a handball outside
the box.
Speaker 4 (02:06:35):
This flick definitely was outside the box.
Speaker 12 (02:06:37):
Though.
Speaker 8 (02:06:39):
Ferrera's asking for us. That's a referee was right there,
Refree making any motion at the Proudness side and you
can hear it rooming through the microphone through the replay
up on the big screen. As the ball goes in behind,
sounds eat to stay focused. Honor goes and clattered into
(02:07:01):
to Stu Hawkin's clumsy bite.
Speaker 25 (02:07:03):
Stu referee gives nothing like then maybe was already going down.
Speaker 8 (02:07:09):
Sounds to be a little bit careful as they lead
here one nil? Do they preserve this lead?
Speaker 25 (02:07:14):
In a fifth clean sheet of the season four Stefan
Fryar sits in second all time in MLS four clean sheets.
Speaker 8 (02:07:22):
Good switcher play to.
Speaker 25 (02:07:23):
The far side by san Diego picked up now by
the experience an of all good doin. It'll be involved
in Gold Cup most likely as John the Bell steps.
Speaker 8 (02:07:32):
In well wins.
Speaker 25 (02:07:33):
The ball picked up by rolled On nothing really on
for rolled On forward, so it just kind of stabs
the ball for.
Speaker 8 (02:07:40):
Referee right there. Christian Wrongo ask him for a free
kick in sensed by the referee's lack of decision there.
But there comes San Diego now with a dryer out
to the right hand side. It's verse cop back to
Vie Hoover. The sound is camped outside their eighteen yard box,
eleven men behind the ball.
Speaker 25 (02:08:03):
Staffskyt the furthest forward as the ball goes to the right,
close down by Rothrock comes back straightforward ball, it tooks
first off, clips it in played well by Sue Hawk
and strike.
Speaker 8 (02:08:16):
Cluff shot and it goes and that's saved by Zep.
Very comfortable this si him as there was a scuff
shot by hes McVeagh found himself in the eighteen yard bucks.
Speaker 9 (02:08:27):
I think it was a mix of four or five
no calls. Started off with that goalkeeper handball outside of
the box, which it certainly looks like you're on the
replay we're watching, and then it goes down to CHOOKI
then up to Christian and I think the referee said, hey,
I gotta let this one lay. So I'm gonna call
it one way or another. I'm gonna and sense one
of these teams. Then the game turns, it's just back
and forth, back and forth. At this point, the Sounders
just need to put their foot on the wall, swinging
(02:08:49):
around the back gainst some possession.
Speaker 25 (02:08:52):
It feels it's been the story of tonight when Rolldong
clicked to the ball in the middle of the park,
traveled with it twenty yards, but nothing was really on
for him, eventually.
Speaker 8 (02:09:00):
Got his pocket picked. It feels like the lack of
options at times when the Sounders have the ball.
Speaker 9 (02:09:04):
Early in that one, though, Christian, the ball that was
on was way a wide to Rothrock is sitting in
there standing, and then you take the extra touch thinking
the defender is gonna come in, and then everything closes
down because, like we said in the first half, San
Diego wants them, they'll compact things really tight in the middle,
so that outlet's got to be sent either over the
top out wide, or you gotta draw the foul at
(02:09:24):
the end of the day, if you feel pressure, go
down in the middle of the pitch. But Christian typically
is so strong and stoic, He's not just gonna take
pressure and just fall on the ground.
Speaker 25 (02:09:34):
Seventy fourth minute, San Diego had the ball trailing one goal,
till against the Sound is they win it getting it
away sloppily by Jonathan Bell. Frustration runks the Green Shirts.
They look at each other trying to get a gripping.
This game again fifty possession for San Diego so far.
Speaker 8 (02:09:50):
It's the mark. Sounds like to hit in every game,
especially here at.
Speaker 25 (02:09:53):
Luminfield, and they have not lost thirteen games not lost
this year. The last lost was LFC in leagues cut
back in August of last year.
Speaker 8 (02:10:04):
There comes good Joy with Bombino and Chuki Lasana. It's
actually spelled Chucky and it was after the horror character
that he used to give me nightmares.
Speaker 9 (02:10:17):
The kid.
Speaker 8 (02:10:21):
Given when he's an eleven year old. I think it's
like in Mexico and his youth. These in the academy,
I think it was Pachuca.
Speaker 25 (02:10:31):
Then comes to verse Goov now middle of the park,
Raren Schmetzer on his feet, just commanding his team.
Speaker 8 (02:10:38):
It comes dryer, picked up well by.
Speaker 25 (02:10:41):
Alex, but then given away sloppy touch. It's been a
story of the night so far by the Sound just
haven't been crisp and.
Speaker 8 (02:10:46):
Clean in their possession. As the Sounds pick it up
top of the box.
Speaker 25 (02:10:53):
Or place square just surveys dry as he stepped out
as he knew who strides food and now with grossneck.
See a couple of more potential changes happening down the
Sounders bench show Paolo's.
Speaker 8 (02:11:09):
Maybe a young kilane Well goes back to Stephen Fry
sound to try to build out the back. We'll touch
bull from rolled on to Stu hawk Is on.
Speaker 25 (02:11:20):
His right hand, sign SIPs it into the middle, breaks
the line, welders hawk in twins.
Speaker 8 (02:11:26):
Vargas now striding forward, finds de la Vega tough ball,
but tries to deal with it. Masovski tries to come
across now wins it. Here comes de la Vega outside
the for refere had already blown his whist. So look
a soft foul on Masofsky.
Speaker 4 (02:11:40):
If I didn't look too much like a foul to me.
Speaker 9 (02:11:45):
That's good movement from the Sounders, and that's what it
was always gonna take. And is Stewart Hawkins again with
a ball out of the back across the field, almost
gets cuts out, cut out, but it finds its way
and into that switch from side to side.
Speaker 4 (02:11:56):
That's working for the Sounders.
Speaker 9 (02:11:57):
And now San Diego with some good sustained resher like
you said, and if they don't keep the ball for
long extended periods of time, it's gonna be a long
fifteen minutes to see this one out.
Speaker 8 (02:12:06):
They come bombing or cut in as week of right
foot curls it. Another save by ceph and Fry continues
to after be solid in the back stick. It was
comfortable in the end. That's the seventh shot on goal
for San Diego, thirteenth shot in total. Sephro and Fry
(02:12:26):
has had to make a good handful of saves tonight.
But May is AA n HPI Heritage Month Support AA
n HPI owned small businesses joined the month of May
for a chance to win Sounders FC prizes.
Speaker 25 (02:12:39):
Visit intentionalist dot com to find a business near you.
Here in the seventy seventh minute, inside.
Speaker 8 (02:12:48):
The last fifteen Here at lumin Field Sports Radio nights
nine to fifty KJR.
Speaker 25 (02:12:52):
AM, wherever you're listening to us Sounders leading one gold
to nil on a perfect night early kick off here
a lumin Field, the crowd is filled in.
Speaker 8 (02:13:02):
The ball gets shifted from this side of the field
of the far side to top goal score. Dryer comes
on his preferred left foot, go square to a good door,
it's square to it's verse GoF Trice occurred to the
fast stick goes over goal kick sound As remains one nil.
Speaker 9 (02:13:17):
Yeah, it's it's gonna be a long fifteen minutes for
the Sounders. And I think this injection right here of
a couple of subs oldbed looks tired tonight.
Speaker 4 (02:13:25):
We set it from the beginning. I'm not sure who
else is gonna come out.
Speaker 9 (02:13:29):
Alex maybe like for light for Kilani Coloney does it
needs a little injection to some case and power.
Speaker 4 (02:13:34):
And I think schmidtz this big.
Speaker 9 (02:13:35):
Thing is gonna be when the ball does go wide,
we have to get a player that's gonna step out.
It can't be we allow Choki or Dryer to have
five and six touches on the ball.
Speaker 4 (02:13:45):
Have to put guys under pressure.
Speaker 8 (02:13:51):
Sat Paul Ross Roy at you other right side, so
Alex Wadon will stand on that right back spot. Coloni
watched his step up a line play on that right
outside the field of the three. Paul rothrock off, Kilani
On obd Vargas off, as bren Evans mentioned, and it's
jp no better player to bring on the field try
and close this game. Now is getting the final twelve
(02:14:13):
minutes of the ninety we'll sit in alongside Christian rolled
on this first off gives some Masaoski a little nudge
in the back heading out of bounds. Sounders will take
that throwing for the Green Shirts.
Speaker 9 (02:14:24):
On this near Si, I think it's a good sub
Kilaney coming into this one. It'll give a little pace
and power now and a little bit of life on
this right hand side because everything's been coming down san
Diego's left hand side, Colonie will provide that cover number one.
Speaker 4 (02:14:36):
He's a defender by nature.
Speaker 9 (02:14:39):
The number two is going to provide some physicality and
if he's got a foul high up the field.
Speaker 4 (02:14:43):
No problem. Sounders to deal with it. Be big, be strong,
be brave out there.
Speaker 8 (02:14:48):
A little late from Masoski a free you're not interested
giving a yellow card? Who's right from the assistant referee? Well,
wherever you head it, Discount Tyre wants to get you
there safely.
Speaker 25 (02:14:57):
Shop for Tyres with treadwell your personal tig all right
at discount tire dot com. Sound as one san Diego
nil off the back of first goal in MLS regular
season play for the big money signing in the off season.
Speaker 8 (02:15:14):
He's who's Ferrera playing at the number nine.
Speaker 25 (02:15:16):
Will bounces through Stu Hawkins a little dangerous high kick,
clatches Lasky in the face.
Speaker 8 (02:15:22):
No foul given. Alex all Don is having a word.
Maybe needs to get back into position, freeze, let things go.
Speaker 4 (02:15:29):
Look points sure, well it's not a high kick.
Speaker 8 (02:15:34):
He's a foul and they're asking for a deflection. Maybe
the sounds throwing.
Speaker 9 (02:15:40):
If it's a head intruder should have done. Watch the
replay here Stuugh Hawkins looking at the ball the whole time.
The head barely even comes down the bole shoulder height.
So maybe if the referee had a better view it's
a foul. But I don't think he saw too.
Speaker 25 (02:15:54):
Much in it, because then you go a have it
clip of the heels on good joy, a combination of
Mussovsky and rolled darn as well on.
Speaker 8 (02:16:06):
Found the ball strode forward, referees whistle pulls it back.
It's gonna be a chance for san Diego here left
channel tucked in this inside the width of the eighteen
yard box on his left hand side, thirty yards or
so from the n light. So chance for the culture
right foot of Lazano or the left foot of dryer.
(02:16:29):
The sound is holding their line three yards or so
inside their eighteen yard box, line of seven green shirts
Navy blue shirts packed in towards the back six. It's
gonna be dryer.
Speaker 25 (02:16:43):
This Zano walks away and holds his position top of
the eighteen yard box and it goes towards the backstick
edding clear by Alex Roldan and picked her well by
Kilaney striding forward, go.
Speaker 8 (02:16:54):
Down Sun, Yes he does, obvious yellow card and that's
a great foul, great free kick. Well played Kilanie, and look.
Speaker 9 (02:17:06):
That that's why he's brought on this field, because he's
gonna fight for every single ball. A lot of attacking
players for the Sounders aren't gonna challenge for that header,
knowing that you're going up against a big center back.
But Kilanie undersized what strong willing, and he'll make a
defender think twice and do a good job. Commit a foul,
yellow card, stop the counter attack, especially down one. Nothing
(02:17:28):
can't afford to go down to nil at this point.
Speaker 4 (02:17:30):
For San Diego.
Speaker 25 (02:17:31):
So a couple of changes, who from the right back
goes off LUFTI send will go and slide on not
right handside.
Speaker 8 (02:17:38):
More of a field plav They'll slide that trying to
provide a bit more attacking threat. He slid Valakari off
this time. So I'll get that one right, I believe anahell.
If an lafc man comes on as another number nine,
weld not forward challenge well by Lisano. So head coach
(02:17:59):
mikey bar For San Diego's made his moves. Tacking players
are on the field, no doubt about that.
Speaker 25 (02:18:05):
Sounders now take advantage and maybe a little bit of
space in behind and through the midfield as they chase
the game.
Speaker 8 (02:18:10):
Sound is showing what good teams do, finding a way
to get the goal.
Speaker 25 (02:18:15):
Now the defense boll goes back to the Sansos this,
I'd be clear say with his left foot doesn't pick
it up out of bounds. He goes over the Sounder's bench,
could be throwing Sounders remains more nil.
Speaker 9 (02:18:24):
But that's a pressure that you want. And that's what
San Diego did in the first half, really, really well.
Was any any backpass that went in a willing runner
was gonna go and put pressure. And that's what happens
if Danny Mozowski doesn't apply pressure and thinks that it's
just gonna be an easy clear until Santos takes a
touch and San Diego is able to play out of
the back. But instead you put in the effort, you get.
Speaker 25 (02:18:42):
Rewarded for it, and majority of the time Lsano has
it drops it back to good quick feet, try to
knock you down.
Speaker 8 (02:18:49):
The line comes off. Alex rolled on.
Speaker 9 (02:18:51):
There's incredible quick feet, a little hit it up with
his left into the air and then a little volley
with his left foot. It's a a super high quality player.
I've been really impressed him today.
Speaker 8 (02:19:01):
Yeah, it just fills that space right in front of
the back floor. It's an important position where you play
three in the midfield, a lot of space to cover,
so it almost gets caught. He does get caught just
about by Dela Vega and then cleaned up by mcpay,
almost giving up by the goalkeeper.
Speaker 4 (02:19:17):
This happened in San Diego.
Speaker 9 (02:19:19):
You remember that playing with fire out of the back
down in San Diego, and the Sounders were able to
create a couple of half chances from it. Remember the
first half. First five six minutes into this one, Alex
Rodan picks off a pass from Dos Santos and Do
Santos has to recover and make a brilliant save. And
this is one thing about San Diego. When you play
out of the back, you're playing with fire a lot
(02:19:39):
of time.
Speaker 25 (02:19:40):
Your foul given up by young Kilaney, So when's the foul?
And then he gives up a foul to the right place,
gets a yellow car just stops as the counter or
tat boy. San Diego allows eleven Green Shirts back behind
the ball. Well, this copywrit in audio cats a Major
League Soccer may not be retransmitted, reproduced, or rebroadcast. Well
the express written consent of Major League Soccer.
Speaker 8 (02:20:04):
Inside the final seven minutes of this game, sound is
leading one goal to nil. There was score line one
mil that got three points against FC Dallas. Will it
be the same again? Here?
Speaker 25 (02:20:19):
Another clean sheet step and fright, you have to say
today he's earned it big.
Speaker 8 (02:20:24):
Time saves in the first half, good play by JP.
Tries to roll it down the line, sof he just
kind of gives up on end. But now he's gonna
back up.
Speaker 25 (02:20:32):
So he comes back with a slight muscular injury that
he's coming back from as well, just trying to find
his feet.
Speaker 8 (02:20:37):
Mentioned five goals in five straight games, Masofsky.
Speaker 9 (02:20:40):
Yeah, and it's one where we talked about it. We
would love to see him start that LAFC game right
and really continue that streak. And then you pick up
a little bit of an injury and then you gotta
work your way back into the lineup. You're not feeling
like you have that explosiveness just yet. And JP does
such a good job of winning the ball there, and
it's the outback pass once again that's failed. The sound
is just a couple of times tonight one they'll have
(02:21:02):
to clean up against third place Minnesota on Sunday here
at home.
Speaker 25 (02:21:08):
Yeah, some big games coming up for the Sounders. Travel
then to Vancouver to play the number one team. Vancouver
and the Western Conference.
Speaker 8 (02:21:15):
Have really found their way in the season. But here
come the sound Is Kilani has it. Pegget de la
Vega tries to chip the goalkeeper.
Speaker 6 (02:21:23):
You know what, why not?
Speaker 8 (02:21:25):
You'd say, question Mark de la Vega is wide open,
But there's some confidence for the young man he had.
It just couldn't quite connect.
Speaker 9 (02:21:31):
It couldn't connect the balls just inside of where he
wants it to be to really be able to hit
that ball and pay some power.
Speaker 4 (02:21:38):
But on the left hand side, they Vega's in.
Speaker 25 (02:21:43):
As Lazana went down, used all that experience, felt the
pressure from his left and right went down.
Speaker 8 (02:21:48):
As he went down, he was looking up with the
referee work in. The referee had much of a chance.
Speaker 4 (02:21:52):
You have the JP come in here.
Speaker 9 (02:21:54):
Just you see the physicality of it, right, you have
JP's given the chance. I don't even think that's a
foul too much. It's welled on with the shoulder. There's
no pull, there's no arm extended. Let's see JP upset there.
Speaker 8 (02:22:05):
Yeah, it was more Lazana's experience. It's gonna won the
day and free peck. Mitch gives the free kick.
Speaker 25 (02:22:15):
To San Diego less of center, thirty yards out, two
man wall of de la Vega and Rosna.
Speaker 8 (02:22:21):
It's gonna be Lozano with his right foot.
Speaker 25 (02:22:25):
It's gonna clip it in, headed clear by new acrobatically
as always, arms flail in the air after the ball
goes out. Now flick back in by San Diego, Stephan
and Fry comes out, ball bounces around Sefron, Fry wins.
Speaker 8 (02:22:39):
The free kick. Let's stretching a little bit, refereen. I
mean the goalkeeper always get the benefit of the doubt there.
Speaker 9 (02:22:44):
Pratt, Yeah, he will and Stephan Fry's field in this one.
As he comes down, I think he may have gotten
stepped on. So Bill get swung out wide here left
foot first time service. It's an outswinger. Stephen Fry comes
to get it. It looks like it just gets wrapped
up there and again, like you said, always getting the
benefit of the mid aubu.
Speaker 4 (02:23:05):
Maybe it's a little calf cramp on that one. I
think you see on the on there he's laughing.
Speaker 8 (02:23:10):
See how does a goalkeeper get cramped?
Speaker 4 (02:23:13):
Yeah, just a cramp, he said.
Speaker 9 (02:23:15):
I was down there at halftime, and it's not it's
not a warm night. It's just an accumulation of games, right,
especially with that one. I talked to Menhart after the
game and he said in the locker room people's feet
were just burning from that game on on turf with
the sun blazing, And yeah, it's seventy five degrees outside,
but on that turf it's a good ninety five degrees.
It's way hotter and you're wearing black shoes.
Speaker 25 (02:23:37):
Three minutes ago of the nineties, sound is leading one
goal to nil here on Sports Radio nine fifty am
or gets not long by Stephen Fry, earning that clean
sheet so far as the all gets.
Speaker 8 (02:23:48):
Sliced by Goodyg's this near sight to Lazanna brings it.
Speaker 25 (02:23:51):
Down well overlapping run by Bombino comes inside in his
right foot, clips it forward to and Hell picked up
by Colooney, then cleared by new chase, down by Missovski's
Docentos scurries back into his box, ball goes back behind
the Santos closed down by Lesovski, almost gave it up.
Now double team by picked up by the Sounders. It
(02:24:12):
comes Rosneck. You have the chance to play de la
Vega slows it down de la Vega.
Speaker 8 (02:24:17):
Now it's closed down by two men, luckless and being
one of them, left corner of the box. Quick feet
by De la Vega. Chance gone for the Sounders.
Speaker 25 (02:24:25):
Earns A throwing the fast Shine throws it in quickly
towards Nude, slices it to the side netting.
Speaker 8 (02:24:33):
The chance was there, Brad Rosneck had of You do
see Rosneck giving up the wrong pass too often?
Speaker 9 (02:24:38):
I think you may have assumed that Pedro was just
offside looking at the center back for San Diego.
Speaker 4 (02:24:43):
But the play is there, the ball is there.
Speaker 9 (02:24:46):
Not often do you see Albert kind of waning in
a decision to slip a ball in behind and just
take the chance. But the sounders again putting Docentos under pressure,
and it's a willingness for the runner, right Dan, he
doesn't have to on that one.
Speaker 4 (02:25:00):
There's two minutes left.
Speaker 9 (02:25:01):
I saved my legs, but it said you put them
under pressure and end up with a little half chance.
Speaker 8 (02:25:06):
San Diego with the pull just in front of Brian
Schmizer KUDOI has a dress to clip it four down
this near side. Alex Roldan goes up so you orchids
can't get that. Velosky has it, runs it down to
the top of the box. The Lozano scuff shot. It's
gonna be a goal kick.
Speaker 25 (02:25:21):
As you mentioned your sound as a back at home
to face Minnesota United FC at the Emerald Queen Casino
Pitcher lumin Field on Sunday, June first, at three pm Pacific.
Speaker 8 (02:25:30):
Watch the match via the.
Speaker 25 (02:25:31):
MLYSS season Pass on the Apple TV app and listen
on KJR and l RAY thirteen sixty am. The Provident
Swedish premt show starts at two thirty pm.
Speaker 9 (02:25:43):
Well, you just saw here Alex Rodan cramping in his
right calf and he looks over to the bench saying
I need a sub and any road stands up and says,
we don't have any more sets. You're finishing until Chris
Cornish comes across with a little bit of a little
bit of magic water.
Speaker 8 (02:25:56):
We saw it new who make can run down the
left hand side. Brian Schwantze mentioned it this week that
you knew who. He's finding his own form.
Speaker 25 (02:26:05):
He does have the freedom to go. We've seen it
more in this past couple of weeks. He's got the
engine to do it. It's always been a rock on
the left hand side, but.
Speaker 8 (02:26:14):
You know, getting him involved.
Speaker 25 (02:26:16):
It's also allowed similar Ryan Cannick to drop the left
sholto on their right foot.
Speaker 9 (02:26:21):
If you play with four in the back, you have
to give the opportunity for outside backs to get forward.
But at the end of the day, it's up to
know who that If he is going to get forward,
it's got to be quality service every time he gets
the ball, and if it's not, then he's gonna be
in trouble with a quick counter attack.
Speaker 8 (02:26:36):
Rumbles in the crowd groans as the board goes up
down below us on the fourth official five minutes of
at a time. Here at Lumenfield Sounds leading one goal
to nil against San Diego. San Diego is sicking.
Speaker 25 (02:26:49):
San Diego is sitting in second position coming today's games.
All goes in and volleyed clear by Trelawney.
Speaker 9 (02:26:58):
Listen so far as Stewart Hawkins with his first real
forty five minutes in Major League Soccer, putting in the work,
and he's been in the right position the.
Speaker 4 (02:27:06):
Majority of the time. Again he's in the right spot.
Speaker 8 (02:27:09):
The header away from Home, you said it just defend.
Speaker 25 (02:27:13):
First, do your job, defend you, then let the players
in front of you do the magic. It comes Lazana close.
Speaker 8 (02:27:21):
Now back Colone again. I was talking to Keith Costigan today.
He's calling the Apple TV game. You used, of course
be the voice of the sounders, and talks about the
LFC game. What a disappointment that was. But Colooney had
a great game. As the ball gets clicked forward, goes
over the end like welky sound as it loudes Lozano's
running from left to the inside. It's gonna be a
(02:27:43):
goalkick remains sound as one. San Diego nil, renevance.
Speaker 9 (02:27:47):
Yeah, And at the end of the day, if you're
gonna play in the ninety ninety second minute. It's gonna
be about defending when you're only up one nil. The
amount of pressure that San Diego is gonna gonna push
on you, and it's how how strong can you? It's
the willpower at the end of the day, when guys
are cramping, goalkeepers cramping from a tough a tough weekend
game and a tough stretch of games. It's about willpower.
(02:28:09):
And so if you're gonna defend, defend and do it well.
Stuart Hawkins is gonna take a while. We've talked to Schmantz,
We've talked to Andy Rose, but he's still growing into
his body, even at such a young age. The passing
will come as he gets confident playing in more and
more games, much like Kolani.
Speaker 8 (02:28:25):
Well, it goes in so rushnack. Now he fans the
over quick Christian roll gone inside the eg and yard bucks. Hegoes,
strikes it good save by Dos Santos Masovski Dela Vega square.
Christian decided to put his head down.
Speaker 9 (02:28:39):
Strike it well, Well, that's a midfielder in the ninety
third minute who's played two back to back ninety plus
minute games, who has got no other options. No more
legs and just Alex to put his put his head down,
put his foot through the ball and it's a one
handed saved from Dos Santos.
Speaker 8 (02:28:54):
Who was leaning slightly to his right and made the safe.
Speaker 9 (02:28:57):
Looked a little tight to slip in Pedro or Musaski
up top there, So I think Christian does the right thing.
Speaker 8 (02:29:05):
Two and a half the five gone here Blumenfield. Sound
has continued to lead here one goal to nil, and
as we mentioned back here on Sunday afternoon, to play
third place team in the Western Conference Minnesota.
Speaker 25 (02:29:19):
San Diego second coming into today's games, Sound is fifth
coming into today's game.
Speaker 8 (02:29:25):
So it sounds like the ability to close this one out,
slow the game down. There's Whereuznak's gonna put the ball down.
It was a giveaway, right. I think it was McNay
who just let the ball slide under his foot. He
goes out for a throwing the fast.
Speaker 4 (02:29:38):
Right you've seen listen tonight.
Speaker 9 (02:29:40):
Coming off such short rest from a Saturday game for
both squads, it's it's never gonna be a perfect game
and probably not as clean as either team would like it.
Certainly not the Sounders. San Diego was the better team.
In the first half. Statistically San Diego better on the night.
But then San Diego's got to make some subs, and
you've seen the game change for them quite a bit.
And the Sounders, I think score go at such an
(02:30:00):
opportune time, right right, there's about San Diego is gonna
have to make those subs due to some minute restrictions,
having a lot of games in three days in a week.
Speaker 25 (02:30:11):
It's another green shirt down on the ground, JP got
ham it into We look.
Speaker 8 (02:30:16):
At the replayer right now, Brad, and this is coming
from on hill.
Speaker 4 (02:30:21):
Milca's just he shoulder milk in a little.
Speaker 8 (02:30:23):
Bit of clock. Yeah, popped in on his feet, Yeah,
popped on his feet.
Speaker 25 (02:30:27):
Sounds have it thirty yards for gold, middle of the
park with Christian WORLDO.
Speaker 8 (02:30:31):
And now the passes start to connect. All goes in JP.
Speaker 25 (02:30:35):
Now just calmly plays a bat to Sue Hawkins, who
just slices the ball out a misplayed by Stu.
Speaker 8 (02:30:42):
Maybe holding his croy and maybe he caught his foot
on the turf. Looks like he maybe snags something. So
then the most important people the next three days, it's gonna.
Speaker 9 (02:30:50):
Be the medical staff. Yeah, it's gonna be if you
lose Stu Hawkins Jackson. Reagan's gonna have a speed recovery
back into this one. But they have some options, like
we said, maybe you see new who come in as
a center back. A little bit more discipline is going
to be required of him there. And then you put
in a readmaker Widing as a left back, so we'll
have some options.
Speaker 4 (02:31:08):
But then it doesn't get any easier from here.
Speaker 8 (02:31:10):
Final thirty seconds gonna sound as holdout. As Losana goes
towards the end.
Speaker 4 (02:31:13):
Like good play by Kilany slides.
Speaker 8 (02:31:15):
Him, the sound is gonna have to defend this corner kid.
Speaker 25 (02:31:18):
This is the last chance before San Diegos to tick
Towards the five minute mark of the five added on
big Dos Santos goalkeeper all in yellow, coming up sitting
on the pak spot. More comes in challenged by Dos
Sanzos could have headed clear and then up over.
Speaker 8 (02:31:33):
The top and wide high fives all around. It was
Tela Vega who won that header and the referees whistle
is right about there. We're pasted the five minute mark.
Speaker 4 (02:31:47):
The crowd know it.
Speaker 8 (02:31:48):
Three points look secure and it's not been easy.
Speaker 25 (02:31:53):
They've huffed the puff today of the sounders and again
as all good teams do.
Speaker 8 (02:31:58):
They grind out a win, earn the three points and
the referees whistle guts go to his mouth and there's
the final whistle. Big time win for the Sound. You
can see it on the players, and it.
Speaker 29 (02:32:13):
Was Jesus Ferrera in the fifty eighth minute, a turn
and a strike with his left foot, but his first
goal for the Sound as a regular season play, and
he earns the three points in stepan fry.
Speaker 8 (02:32:29):
Another clean sheet for the Sounds. Goalkeeper run Evans.
Speaker 9 (02:32:32):
Your final thoughts, Yeah, look, not the prettiest of game
to start this one off, but you see what it
means to the players down there, and sometimes in these
games when the first forty five doesn't go according to
plan and then the second half starts off that way
as well, it's about getting the result and how you
can grind it out. And I think you see the
players new from the start that this was gonna be
a tough one for them. You lose the center back
once again, wasn't always gonna be the prettiest, but the
(02:32:54):
Sounder is able to have some grit and really really
put it to San Diego for the last fifteen to
twenty minute to this game, better squad and to get
that goal was so pivotal from hass Ferrara when you
saw Kalani's reaction, you saw Albert Rusnak. It's about getting
three points. Sometimes it doesn't have to be pretty. They
don't ask how most of the time they just ask
how many. So the Sounders will take this one. With
(02:33:15):
another home game on Sunday.
Speaker 25 (02:33:17):
Yet revenge after the three zero lost down in Southern
California earlier in the season, The Sounders come back, don't
play their best game, but they win one goal to
nil to a team that has not lost in May
five thirteen points out of a fossil fifteen for San
Diego coming into today's game. So Sounders continue to add
points to their total as they jump to twenty six
(02:33:40):
points now on the season. Thanks for everyone involved in
today's broadcast. Mitchell Bloyd back of the studio, Terry Ryan
here on the board in the booth, Healy done, and
Kevin k Jordan Thompson of course, the Sounders legend Brad
Evans Well. The Sounders returned to Lumenfield on Sunday to

(02:39:52):
on Sunday. Great night here Loominfield, We welcome you in
to the Sounders FC postmatch Show. Jackson Felts alongside the
player in row and the coach p viewing. We are
here for the next hour hour long postgame show tonight.
We're gonna hear from head coach Brian Schmittzer. We're gonna
react to this game. We're gonna talk about Minnesota ahead
and exactly how Brian Schmetzer sets up his team, which
(02:40:15):
could end up taking nine points out of a possible
nine when the week is all said and done. But
let's start with some opening thoughts. Kellen won nothing win
tonight for the Sounders. Look, I think it was a
good win.
Speaker 5 (02:40:27):
We talked about how this would be a redemption game
and they had to be patient, picked their times, you know,
make sure they play the right ball. And when they
did go, I thought they did a really good job
of going at pace and going with numbers. We'll talk
about it later in this in this post game that
is drowning on into my bedtime, but we'll talk about more.
Speaker 3 (02:40:45):
They could put out the door by eight thirty, Okay.
Speaker 4 (02:40:47):
Buddy, I have, I have. I'm a working man now, Okay,
not the fun kind.
Speaker 5 (02:40:52):
It's it's a lot to no, it's I think there
was a good game for him, though, And like I said,
they picked their moments. I think they could have been
cleaner and more clinical in those moments, especially towards the end.
I don't think they made the right decisions, but we
can talk about that more.
Speaker 6 (02:41:05):
Yeah, I thought it was a better performance than Dallas.
I think maybe close, but.
Speaker 4 (02:41:13):
He's thinking again, Yeah, I think it is close.
Speaker 6 (02:41:15):
But I would say this that they're gonna get in
the locker room and because it's the second of three,
they they're gonna look at it and say, Okay, put
it behind us. They gotta get healthy again and get
ready to go to Minnesota. Is a very good team.
I like your comment about they picked their times right.
Speaker 13 (02:41:32):
They did.
Speaker 6 (02:41:32):
They could have got another goal or two, honestly on
some of the counter attacks late in the game when
San Diego is coming forward. But another clean sheet. That's
clean sheet number six for the club this year. So
I'll take it. It wasn't as pretty as you want,
But again, if you can come through a season and
have some wins that aren't as pretty, you're not playing
at your best, then you'll take as a coach, as
(02:41:55):
a player, you'll take as a fan, you'll take it.
Speaker 3 (02:41:56):
I feel like we said the same things on Saturday, Well,
it was as pretty as you want, and that's what
we let the Free Games show with today. But well,
it wasn't as pretty as you want, but it wasn't
one nothing win. And I'm gonna say the exact same
thing I said in the postgame show back on Saturday
in October. When this team is looking at a top
three seed in the Western Conference, we're gonna look back
at the schedule. We're gonna see the one nothing went
over Dallas. We're gonna see the one nothing win tonight,
(02:42:18):
and we're not gonna remember or care that it wasn't
as pretty as we wanted it to be.
Speaker 6 (02:42:23):
Here's where I think this is a little bit of
a better win. I agree with you. This was San
Diego versus Dallas. Y. San Diego really had a they
did very well against us in the first game. So
and to come back in the rubber match and get
the win at home and to get six points, right,
that that is a good thing. So I think they're
gonna be somewhat satisfied in the locker room. I thought
(02:42:45):
some of the young people who came Stuart Hawkins did
his job today.
Speaker 4 (02:42:49):
Good for that kid.
Speaker 6 (02:42:51):
Kilani did his job today and came in. He was
he created some things he got a yellow card because
of a fast break. He didn't give the ball away
too much. He was a spark and that gives he
should have some confidence from that game. And I'll tell
you what the goal. Parreira's goal, great cross from Paul Rothrock.
That's his third assist. Ferrera's first touch, that's the quality
(02:43:11):
we are hoping to see from him. His first touch
was a little away from the defender. Gave him a
good chance to just tucking home with his left foot.
So yeah, we'll take it. Six points. On to Minnesota.
Speaker 5 (02:43:24):
Well, if you talk about these games, you talk about
going into the locker room, you have your two games
now on Saturday and Wednesday. You're going again on Sunday,
and you're thinking, Okay, our legs are tired, but we
already got our two wins, right. We grinded these games out.
They really did get against Dallas again one zero. It
was what the eighty seventh minute of the PK happened.
And then you have it here again today where they
scored in the second half, but then they did sit
(02:43:45):
back and grind and defend and fight and battle. And
so now you're looking at this team who's coming down
with injuries. Right, you have younger players that are coming
in less experience. So if you're Brian Smetzer, what are
you giving these guys coming into Sunday going? Hey, I
know we have our two wins already, but that's not
good enough for the Seattle Sounders. We have to make
sure that it's three for three and nine points in
(02:44:08):
this home game. Stretch hot, what do you giveing the coach?
Speaker 11 (02:44:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (02:44:11):
Well, really quick before we take a break, py'all, we'll
get back to that next segment. I will say.
Speaker 3 (02:44:14):
With the win, Sounders now up to twenty six points,

Sounder's taking care of business tonight against San Diego. A
one nothing win here tonight at Luminfield, A beautiful evening
here at loumin As. The Sounders took care of business
to get their win, and it's time for Emerald Queen
Casino Play of the match.
Speaker 4 (02:49:12):
One goal tonight.
Speaker 3 (02:49:13):
That's exactly where we're going It's the first for Haes
who's Ferrara, and it ends up being the game winner.
Speaker 8 (02:49:18):
Day committed down the line and go, sir rough full
can you get that? Fust whips it in his Ferreira
turns strikes and there it is for Fererra.
Speaker 28 (02:49:29):
He gets off the mark for the Sounders, his first
goal in MLS play for his new club, and what
a time to do it.
Speaker 8 (02:49:39):
Sounders won San Diego nil.
Speaker 3 (02:49:42):
The Play of the match is presented by Emerald Queen Casino,
the betting capital of the Northwest. And we kind of
talked about it a little bit there in that first segment, Kellen,
but what a good play the cross from roth Rock,
the finish from Ferrero.
Speaker 4 (02:49:53):
It was. It was really well executed. It was.
Speaker 5 (02:49:55):
And then except they picked their times to go and
when they did go, they went with pace and they
went with with numbers, and that's what they did here.
Alex had played a great ball around the corner to
a you know, a running on Paul Rothrock, who did
it all night. He was the first guy to kind
of get behind that back line when he made those
runs and he finally did it and he connected on
it as well. And the quality and I'm gonna say
(02:50:16):
that word of an underline and very bold and in
all caps. The quality of that play from Hazus Ferira
is gonna be missed a little bit because most players
try and take that ball he's just passed that front post.
Most players are gonna take that cross trying first time
it with his right foot and try and cut across
the goalkeeper. Instead, knowing that he's one on one and
there's not many people around him in the box, he
(02:50:37):
takes that touch with the outside of his right foot
and allows it to roll across his body and so
the defender as well as Jesus, but he does a
quicker job of turning.
Speaker 4 (02:50:46):
But the defender then is a flybyer.
Speaker 5 (02:50:48):
He just kind of slides right by, thank you very much,
and he finds a way to put his left foot
through that for that through the goal, and it's just
it's the quality and awareness of that turn is going
to be missed by many people. It is such a
hard thing to do, especially when you're a goal scorer
like he is.
Speaker 6 (02:51:04):
Yeah, you're nailed at. Here's the other thing. He got
to that near a post, which is what we talked
about before Dallas and what we talked about before this
game and what Brian Schpetzer said, You've got to do
that to create opportunities, so good for him and Kellen
you you're absolutely correct, and it was such a great
turn and then the goalkeeper had just absolutely no chance,
so a great finish. It's it's his first goal for
(02:51:26):
the Sounders. It's a win for the Sounders. It's three
points against the team that's higher up the table than us.
You know, in the last segment we talked about, Kellen said,
finding ways to win. That's fun when it becomes part
of your DNA. You don't always have to play pretty,
but if you can find ways to win, that gives
you confidence that you're going to compete for the ninety minutes.
Speaker 3 (02:51:44):
And how about the defensive job where San Diego, I mean,
what did Seattle finished with Keel you were saying it
was forty four percent possession for the Sounders, and just
the defending that happened over the last thirty minutes of
this game, where they were just peppering the box with
crosses and shots, and I think the job defending, I mean,
callan that was that was such a great job. But
also should be mentioned as well in this part of
(02:52:05):
this conversation, Tonight's Toyota the man of the match I'm
naming is Stephen Frye your logo toylet Duers are proud
to present tonight's man of the match. The saves that
fry came up with, the big stops defensively, the steps
from the defenders, great last thirty minutes on that.
Speaker 6 (02:52:19):
End, well, the big one right before the half kept
it at zero zero that would have given San Diego
all the momentum going in at halftime. And then the
skate save where it.
Speaker 4 (02:52:28):
Was a deflection sixty six minutes.
Speaker 5 (02:52:30):
Yeah, and he good for him, I mean athletics say that.
We both looked at each other going, oh my goodness,
how did he do that?
Speaker 6 (02:52:36):
And then he pinged it first time right out to
Alex rolled On. I'm not sure that he is that
quick that he could first time a ball.
Speaker 3 (02:52:42):
I mean, what a player right makes a save then
distributes right away.
Speaker 6 (02:52:45):
That's our captain, baby, Yes, but again keeping the clean sheet,
I mean that's he is really sharp right now. And
you know, if he can continue this way, I think
he gets another year, another two years. I don't know
how long after that, but I think today, he was
as sharp as as he's been at his decision making.
There was a couple where he came off the line
(02:53:07):
right and and san Diego's making a run through and
he's right at the edge of his box and he's
just stopping things before they get going.
Speaker 4 (02:53:16):
I don't know about next year.
Speaker 5 (02:53:17):
I don't know about two years or five years down
the road for Steph and Fry, but at the moment,
he's playing amazing and we want him for the rest
of the year as well. So he again, Stephen Frye
makes saves that we say now are Stephen fry normal saves,
And we're going to continue to say this. If someone
else made those saves that he made today, he'd be Team.
Speaker 4 (02:53:34):
Of the Week.
Speaker 6 (02:53:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:53:35):
Absolutely, that's that's something that everyone is.
Speaker 5 (02:53:37):
Everyone in this league, ourselves included, are so used to
Stephan fry making these incredible saves that it's just a
normal save and he makes it look so easy and
it is incredibly hard to do so, and so there's
there's that, But there's also the organization piece, and I
mean we missed this as well, on coaching staffs, on
players sides as his fans as well. The organization that
Stephan Frye has to do with that. His center backs
(02:53:59):
have to do that I hear all the time Alex
rold Dan doing as well. Is that you have to
be organized so the shots do not happen as often,
that the deflections do not happen as often, and when
they do, they trust the step and fry could do so.
But that back line being without your two starting center backs,
then dropping Kim Keihe midway through the first half and
finding a way to put an eighteen year old kid
(02:54:21):
in in there and still keep a clean sheet, that's
pretty incredible.
Speaker 6 (02:54:25):
Yeah, phenomenal performance and I'm glad he got Player of
the Game. He deserved it.
Speaker 3 (02:54:29):
We're gonna take a break here, We're gonna come back
and hopefully here from head coach Brian Schmitzer.
Speaker 4 (02:54:34):
That's just a few minutes away.

Let's hatch out the bowels of lumen Field, Seattle Sounders
with a one nothing win tonight over San Diego.
Speaker 4 (02:56:48):
Here is the head coach, Brian Schmitzer.
Speaker 7 (02:56:50):
The thing that we'll do with this game though, is,
you know, we'll obviously assess the first half and was
it more than just the technical breakdowns? I mean, logo
bid must have lost four balls in a row, and
you know it was it more than just the technical piece?
Was there attacktic? Did we get something wrong tactically? Did
we not cover something when they pray? You know, we
(02:57:12):
got to look at that. But what I can tell
you what I might be on repeat is Stephan Fry
is the best goalkeeper in this league. Because you can
talk about goalkeepers that you know, want to play with
their feet and help and possession and all that. But
Steph makes every save that he has to and their
(02:57:35):
guy tonight didn't, now Hazus. I'm not taking anything off
Hazeus because it was a good turn and Paulie does
his job and you know whatever, But Stephan Fry is
the best shot stopping goalkeeper in this league, bar none.
I don't I don't care who you I don't care.
It's just it's it's a fact. And then you get
(02:57:56):
like some of the some of the intangibles. I mean
Stewe Hawkins, I mean, come on, he's he's he's defending
against Chuckie Lizano. He's he's doing what he needs to do.
I mean, look the kid. Okay, he might have made
one mistake or let the ball drop or it was
a little slow, but I mean, come on, kids, the
kid's great. Jonathan Bell, I mean, he comes in the
(02:58:18):
last game, does his job, he's quiet, you know, nice kid,
well rounded kid, does his job, and we're we're we're
so thin but those guys come and do a great job. Jp.
I mean JP comes in, does exactly what we asked him.
Win some tackles, get some balls, give us a little composure,
(02:58:39):
a little bit smarts, brains, you know, it was it
was good, Klannie. I'm going to talk about a game kid.
I mean when he tried to chip the goalkeeper, I
mean we had a we had a couple of chances
to get to to nothing. Maybe he should have slipped Pedro.
But I'm not going to kill the kid because Albert actually,
(02:59:00):
you know, top of the box and we need this
little twirl. If he plays Pedro right away, Pedro's in
on goal. Let's do nothing. So I can't kill Kilanie.
I can't kill Albert because they put it in. But
that was a gritty performance and that's why I liked
it all.
Speaker 30 (02:59:15):
Right, Juda, thanks congratulations too. On the wind, I wanted
to ask just it seemed like you had Danny and
Pedro ready to go for Jyzeu's Can you talk a
little bit about just that that moment timing.
Speaker 7 (02:59:30):
It's, you know, whatever happens up there, whatever you want
to believe. I mean they were coming off the field
and you know, fate has a way of being kind.
You know, Hey, Esus is expecting a child, He's got
a busy week. I hope this, you know this, this,
this goal starts him off on a good way. We
(02:59:50):
needed him to score. He needed to score, you know,
to get some of the fans off his back. I
think he's done a lot of good things, and tonight's
or in the winning goal. Just you know, it's the first.
I told him afterwards in the locker room, I said,
it's the first of many more goals for the Sounders,
So kudos to him.
Speaker 30 (03:00:11):
And then with Stewart that decision there was it a
game that you don't necessarily want to have Jackson kind
of playing, because at that point there was a.
Speaker 7 (03:00:19):
Lot of great question, great question Jada Jackson was only
scheduled for X amount of minutes and it wasn't sixty
eight or whatever. Whenever the injury happened, he Jackson couldn't
play that long. So Stewie's just going to go in
next man.
Speaker 31 (03:00:37):
Up to that question, I was wondering if did you
get any sense on the gravity of Kim Kyhey's injury
at all?
Speaker 7 (03:00:46):
No, Well, Mria tomorrow, it's a left calf issue and
you know we'll see like he was stretching it. He's
put a lot of heavy minutes in. It's unfortunate that
you know, both Kim Key he and the I mar
get injured in respective game. But the resiliency of the club,
so we always preach guys step up, Jackson will be
(03:01:07):
better and ready to play, and you know it's just
next man up.
Speaker 31 (03:01:11):
You seem like all your subs really worked out and
you end up on Tapa San Diego. No, how important
is that in terms of moving forward and kind of
giving the whole thing just more confidence.
Speaker 7 (03:01:22):
Well, the team didn't have a ton of confidence at halftime.
I think the subs, Yes, they came on and did
their jobs. I talked about pitt Well, I talked about
Coloni and JP, Missoski, Pedro.
Speaker 8 (03:01:33):
Good.
Speaker 7 (03:01:33):
Those guys came on and did good. They all worked.
But San Diego is a good team. You know, in
the first half they took it to us. I mean,
their possession is really good, and you know they couldn't
find a goal to you know, compliment all the possession
that they had. But Mike does Mikey does a good job,
(03:01:55):
and that's a good team. So credit to him. Made
it difficult, made it challenging. But this is MLS and
sometimes grit determination home, you know, just one bit of
quality that we have Sometimes that's the difference.
Speaker 32 (03:02:12):
All Right, we'll swing over to this side of the
room and solved the question. You're okay, George, coach, it.
Speaker 3 (03:02:25):
Looked like when Stewart came on that you moved to
street in the back.
Speaker 7 (03:02:31):
No, we always play three to two in our possession,
but it's a forty three one.
Speaker 3 (03:02:37):
Just if you could talk a little bit about his
performance and the fact.
Speaker 7 (03:02:41):
That unexpectedly good. We have high hopes for him. We
have high hopes for him.
Speaker 2 (03:02:49):
You know.
Speaker 7 (03:02:49):
One of the reasons why we signed kim Key he
was because we didn't think Stewart was quite ready. But
if the kid can put performances like that, if he
can show us that, you know, he can do that
on a consistent basis, then he's ready.
Speaker 8 (03:03:07):
Hi, coach, forgot you on the wind.
Speaker 3 (03:03:08):
What would you say are some of the key differences
between the first and second half And what did you
say to the players going into that second half?
Speaker 7 (03:03:16):
Well, we tried to change some things up tactically to
try and get past their press. They have a four
to three to three and block US six in the
middle of the park, and we weren't able to get
past their pressure, so we made some tactical switches there.
The second half wasn't our best in possession either, but.
Speaker 4 (03:03:34):
It was just enough.
Speaker 7 (03:03:35):
I mean, there was that, you know, a couple of moments.
I think some of our transition moments. Obviously after the goal.
After we scored the goal, they had to come out
and we had some more transition moments. But you know,
I don't think this was our best performance. And again
we'll watch the tape and we'll try and assess it
and figure out how we can do a little better.
Speaker 32 (03:03:57):
All right, seen some hands on zoom and if not,
my eyes don't deceive me. I think that's Kellen Rowe
from the booth. Kellen, if you want to bring yourself
off tout and ask a question, we'll take it.
Speaker 5 (03:04:05):
Hey, coach, congratulations, Look, look, two games you kind of
grind it really hard there this Sunday game against a
team that's once again higher in the standings. What is
your message to the guys who are coming in Obviously
a little rotation with the injuries, but they had tired legs.
Speaker 7 (03:04:24):
Well, the message is keep doing what you're doing. Look,
we get an extra day rest against there. But Kellen
to your point, because you know what you're talking about.
It's we got to assess and then if there's guys
that have a little nick or they've had heavy minutes.
You know, Alex was cramping there at the end, we
might have to make some changes to start the game
(03:04:46):
against Minnesota. And that's just par for the course in
a three game week. So we'll we'll assess everybody on
Friday and then you know, pick a lineup on Saturday
and we'll we'll try and get a nine point week
gone Sunday.
Speaker 32 (03:05:01):
All right, we'll go to Felipe Machada next from l
RA thirteen sixty am.
Speaker 7 (03:05:05):
Felipe, go ahead, Thank you, Coach Bray.
Speaker 33 (03:05:09):
And you just said it wasn't your best performance, but
at the end three points or three points the second half,
you had a Georgie Minongu kind of ready to come
in and you end up at sending Klennie. What does
Klannie offer to you different than the Georgie minong When
(03:05:30):
I want to know how how was your defending? What
do you think about the team defending the last fifteen
minutes of the game.
Speaker 4 (03:05:38):
Thank you well.
Speaker 7 (03:05:40):
Kalani is a game player. He gives effort energy. Georgie
gives energy, but he's an attacking player. I just felt
it this game was so close that I needed a more,
you know, two way guy to help Alex. Alex has
had heavy minutes. It was just a decision that you
make on a game day. Nothing to do with Georgie
(03:06:01):
not being good enough to be inserted into the game.
Georgia is a tremendous young player, good talent, but this
game was just Kalani was the right choice.
Speaker 32 (03:06:11):
All right, we'll go to Diego next and then let's
see a couple of fabs, which is fine, Diego go ahead.
Speaker 4 (03:06:16):
We need the mic.
Speaker 34 (03:06:20):
Wells true for are you working at Partis Freendo, Colossias and.
Speaker 2 (03:06:34):
Gambia?
Speaker 34 (03:06:35):
Okay, Gambia, Partillo and Casa.
Speaker 4 (03:06:43):
Congress on the win?
Speaker 7 (03:06:45):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (03:06:46):
Similar to the past game. We won this game with
some level of suffering.
Speaker 8 (03:06:51):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (03:06:53):
But there's a saying in in soccer that when a
team wins, you don't change the team.
Speaker 4 (03:06:58):
Are you planning on making changes.
Speaker 8 (03:06:59):
On the team.
Speaker 7 (03:07:00):
Yeah, we might have to, depending on how they come
out physically, and obviously there's going to be one change
because kim keyhe is out, so that's one change already,
and then rotation with some positions. I mean, it's normal.
It's the benefit of again having a deep squad. Craig
has given me a lot of players that you know,
(03:07:23):
can do the job, so I have to use them.
Speaker 3 (03:07:31):
That is Sounders FC head coach Brian Schmetzer falling tonight's
one nothing win over San Diego back here in the
broadcast booth. Here on the postgame show, Jackson Felts Pete viewing,
and somebody who actually knows about going to say that
was the quote, you actually know what you're talking about,
Kelln Rowe.
Speaker 4 (03:07:49):
It's the first time I've heard that all year. But
that's okay, thank you coach.
Speaker 6 (03:07:53):
Yeah, well, I'll tell you what I like Brian's comments
about He gives shout outs to all the guys who
come in off the bench. He talks about the it,
he talks about the you know, next man up for
the team, and you know, really he's sending a message
to the guys that hey, when we come against Minnesota
on Sunday, we expect that we're gonna do the same thing.
We're going to get another three points. So I love
(03:08:15):
how he's really speaking to the players. Their good questions asked,
including yours, uh Kellen, And and then Brian is talking
about what's next, right, But the grit factor, right, the
next man up factor that will be ready for the
next game. You know, we've seen him through some frustrating
losses and some very dominating wins and he never gets
(03:08:35):
too high and he never gets too low. And it's
on to Minnesota.
Speaker 5 (03:08:38):
Well, as I look at the other smartest guy in
the room here, he's writing down his notes. I'm gonna
steal little note from you, and it feel it's just
it's just three letters there. But it's the DNA, right,
It's not the DNA of this team. It's not the
DNA of Brian Smetzer. It's the DNA of this club
that you find a way to win, that you go
the next man up. And it's done it for years
and years and years. I've played against it, I've played
with it, and each time it, you know, I think
(03:09:01):
about the first one I always think about is in Austin.
I believe it was twenty twenty two, twenty one or
twenty twenty two. Yeah, five teenagers started this game and
everyone's going, oh, he's just really throwing it to the
win here. It's a throwaway game, midweek hot in Austin
in the summertime.
Speaker 30 (03:09:17):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (03:09:17):
And then all of a sudden, Ul Raoul.
Speaker 5 (03:09:20):
Scores and we win one zero. We come out of there,
and everyone goes, how did that happen? It was It
was a half of assist from me, by the way,
don't want to talk about it, but it was a
bad pass that got deflected right into Raoul. About I
loved this, but you know those kind of moments that
continuously happened for these Sounders, the Seattle Sounders club. And
if it once is a fluke, two is is okay,
(03:09:40):
and then three it's it's that's now a habit. It's
become it's become the DNA and the habit of the
Seattle Sounders to to find a way to win.
Speaker 6 (03:09:47):
Yeah, it's happened since, not as dramatically as that game.
As soon as you started to talk about it, I
remember the goal from uh from Raoul. He smashed it.
Speaker 4 (03:09:57):
He hit it so low, forty one yards out.
Speaker 6 (03:09:59):
Yeah, it such a great goal. But those young guys,
and you know, you think you were in that locker room.
So that locker room must have been just a lot
of high five and unhugging because they went in to
win a game and they pulled it out. And yeah,
that's there's a reason we say this about every fourth game,
I think. But there's a reason that the Seattle Sounders
have the most points since two thousand and seven when
(03:10:19):
they joined the MLS.
Speaker 3 (03:10:20):
I have a notebook that I take notes in for
every single game, and in this notebook, in this kind
of folder section right here, I have two things. First
is a program from the inaugural Tacoma Defiance match back
on March eighth of twenty nineteen. The only other thing
I have in here is the game notes and the
lineup sheet from that day. Going back to July twenty
(03:10:41):
second of twenty twenty one, when the Sounders started five teenagers,
they set a new league record, as defined by players
nineteen and under. No other team in MLS history had
done that. Other teams had started four. Seattle set the
record with five, and that obviously were those five ye
those I've ended up being Ethan dobbel Air, Josh Atensio,
(03:11:05):
Reid Baker, Whiting, Obed Vargas and I believe Sam Dinnern
was the other one, or maybe it was Danny Wava.
Speaker 4 (03:11:12):
But no, yeah, Sam and Danny.
Speaker 7 (03:11:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:11:14):
I mean those guys are to be fair.
Speaker 5 (03:11:15):
That is also I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that
was Obed Vargas's start with the Seattle Sounders.
Speaker 4 (03:11:21):
That was his debut. So pretty incredible that that they
were able to do that.
Speaker 5 (03:11:25):
I mean, like we talked about the DNA and I'm
going to steal your note again, but that DNA of
the Seattle Sounders we talked about it's not just this team,
It's not just Brian Spencer. It is the full club
of the Seattle Sounders that has that DNA of.
Speaker 4 (03:11:37):
Next man up.
Speaker 3 (03:11:38):
It was, by the way, that that debut for Obed
Vargas is he was fifteen years old with three hundred
and fifty one days. That's the third youngest player in
league history to make that debut.
Speaker 4 (03:11:47):
And look at the star.
Speaker 3 (03:11:49):
We have Pete what's that name on the bench right.
Speaker 4 (03:11:52):
There, Jimmy Midranda, oh, Kelen Ra Okay, how about that bench?
Speaker 3 (03:11:55):
Stephen Cleveland, Hey, Andrew Thomas was also on the bench
that day. Alex Villanueva won all is gosh, Freddie Montero
was on the bench too with it.
Speaker 5 (03:12:03):
If we didn't have Freddy, myself and Raoul, this has
been the youngest lineup and bench that would have ever
been around in the MLS. I mean, Alex Villanueva is
a thanks still a teenager, Holy cow, Jan Alvarez, it
was a teenager at the time. Andrew Thomas was just
freshly out of college. I mean this is a young,
young lineup.
Speaker 4 (03:12:21):
Yeah, how about that one nothing to win?
Speaker 3 (03:12:23):
And that was We still still have it in my
notes and I'm gonna keep it in here because we
reference it so damn much. What a win that was
for the Sounders, and what a win it was tonight
for the Sounders one nothing over San Diego tonight at Lumenfield.
As the sun sets on the stadium, we'll take one
more break on the postmatch show. We'll come back and
wrap it up by looking our final thoughts here to
on tonight's win and also Minnesota ahead.
Speaker 4 (03:12:44):
A couple quick notes before we do. First.
Speaker 3 (03:12:46):

for the Sounders. It's not a Saturday match. They actually
have an added day of rest. It's a Sunday match
here at lumen Field. It's also a slightly earlier kickoff.
Gonna be a three o'clock kickoff against Minnesota United at
Lumenfield this Sunday. Our Provident Swedish premat show will start
at two thirty and we are back on Sports Radio

thirty pre game three o'clock kickoff.

Folks.
Speaker 3 (03:21:26):
You can also watch the match on MLS Season Pass
on the Apple TV up and listen in Spanish language
on l Ray thirteen to sixty and with the final
few minutes tonight, I think the question that I'm having
Kellen Pete is a do the Sounders rotate or do
they just kind of throw, you know, Pedro back in
there and obviously make up for the kim Key heat
injury left calf injury. According to Brian Schmitzer, we'll see
(03:21:47):
how bad that is MRI coming. But do you just
make those simple changes or Kellen, do you rotate more
than that for Sunday?
Speaker 4 (03:21:55):
For me, you rotate more than that.
Speaker 5 (03:21:56):
Look, there's a lot of games being played, and you're
gonna have a lot of games in there's gonna be
you have an ability to give guys time at home
that normally don't get their starts. And for me, especially
with what what coach Smetzer said on his on his
press conference, you know Alex Roldan, he cramped at the
end there, Christian Christian hasn't really had any time off.
(03:22:17):
Albert had injury problems earlier on, so you can maybe
see that change.
Speaker 4 (03:22:21):
But I liked what I saw from petere V la
Vega in that in that second half.
Speaker 5 (03:22:24):
I liked what I saw with uh Kolani, maybe giving
Georgia run out and get him some confidence so he
can kind of come through. And then for me, it's
the one that kind of stays and is stagnant is
hazus fer era, because if you have a forward, and
I've said this many of times both on this in
interviews two players themselves, forwards run on streaks, and if
(03:22:45):
you can find a streak and you find the find
in the back of the net, becomes a habit. I mean,
look at the moose, right, the moose all of a
sudden went loose for five games.
Speaker 4 (03:22:52):
You let you let those.
Speaker 5 (03:22:53):
Forwards get their streaks and you let them run it out.
And so I think Hazus for Era is one of
those guys that has to be one of the first
names on that team sheet comes Sunday.
Speaker 6 (03:23:02):
I like your thought process. Do you put him up
front or do you put him wide and get Moose
up front?
Speaker 4 (03:23:08):
You know, I think you stick with what has worked.
Speaker 5 (03:23:10):
Has been two wins in a row now with Hazus
Ferrara as the nine, I think you stick with him
as the nine. If you want to get Danny some minutes,
you put him wide or you just take off. You say, Hazus, hey,
we need to get every one minutes again. You have
the first half.
Speaker 6 (03:23:23):
Yeah, And I can see him going to Hayes Susan saying,
I need you to play wide when a coach says
I need you to do something that lifts you up.
But historically Brian does reward those guys who do the job.
And JP did the job today, Galaney did the job today.
Stuart Hawkins did the job today. He doesn't want to
have Jackson Reagan have to go ninety minutes right on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (03:23:43):
He's already he said, he was already on minute restrictions
now on Wednesday. That doesn't normally change for those that
at home, especially if you don't play that number. That
minute number doesn't really change much in half a week,
and it usually doesn't change much in a full week.
Speaker 4 (03:23:57):
If you haven't played any minutes in a game.
Speaker 3 (03:23:59):
Well, given the injury to Kim Key, he could you
do something where you go to a three five two
and have Danny and Hayes, who's play off each other
up top, and you have Kilani as your right wing back,
and then you build the midfield back from there, and
then you're able to say, all right, we're going to
run you know, Jackson plus Stu plus Jonathan Bell, and
then we have you know, knew who who can slide in.
(03:24:21):
It's an interesting thought of kind of the ability. Hey,
we've gotten six points already, you know, can we try
something and see if we can fit the pieces in
to make something work against Minnesota.
Speaker 6 (03:24:31):
Yeah, that's a great one. Kill I'm gonna ask you
this question. Sometimes, coaches, you've got to manufacture a win,
maybe for this weekend. I do love it at Sunday
versus Saturday. That extra day is very helpful. But do
you go to the team and say, hey, this is
that we're gonna get the win this time. We're gonna
go three at the back. We're gonna go two upfront.
Does that work for a player or does the player say,
and I don't want to change our whole lineup for
(03:24:54):
one game from a four to two, three one to
a you know three five two? Right?
Speaker 5 (03:24:58):
Well, you play your personnel, but you play your personnel
and you play the team that you're playing as well.
And so there have been times when you think, and hey,
we we're winning right now, why are we changing? But
then you realize, oh, because our two starting center backs
are heard that our our two midfielders have now played
a ton of minutes, that Alex rolled On are kind
of the guy we trust on this right side has
been playing n ninetynute ninety minute. And we have another
(03:25:20):
quick turnaround. Okay, if we put five in the back,
let's put some runners, get Jackson some minutes where he
has help with two other people around him, if not
four other people around him. You know, put your runners
on the wing backs in Kilani or I would even
say another Paul Rothrock on the left, or if you
really want to go for you know, switching players out.
You would throw a rebaker Whiting on the left and
(03:25:43):
like him, let him run it out, so that the
change is is something that we might see. And I
think it's it's a positive result if it's not like
we're sitting back in any way, but you're getting the
best players on the field for what he has.
Speaker 6 (03:25:56):
Here's the other thing. He said it during his press
conference that they're gonna look up Friday and see where
everybody's at. So all all of our comments right now,
it might be Alex, can you go tomorrow?
Speaker 2 (03:26:06):
Right?
Speaker 6 (03:26:07):
Yes, I can.
Speaker 5 (03:26:07):
I guarantee all the answers of almost everyone there if
you're a good pro. And you know this because you
have to actually look them in the face and see
if they're lying to you, because I was the best
at it, and I could lie to a coach's face
right there and say, coach, I could do whatever you want.
Speaker 4 (03:26:20):
Yep, yes, sir, yes sir.
Speaker 3 (03:26:21):
