a baseball Friday for us. We're not sure how to
handle this, Greg. We've got football that we have to
talk about with the Seahawks and a key game against Jacksonville.
We have a game five tonight with the Mariners. It's
a deciding game five. We're not used to having baseball
in October. There's just too much going on in We're
in sports overload here in Seattle, Sir.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Where's Gorman Thomas when you need him?
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Andrews Gorman Thomas was a baseball player back in the eighties,
Big Guy Beards Struffy played for Milwaukee and actually briefly
played for Seattle.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
I believe that's why I said it. He didn't really
play for Seattle. Where's j B when you need him?
Speaker 2 (02:33):
He's in Texas right now. Nobody loves Jay more than Jay.
He's down there right now, and he did some broadcasting
with him this year. Yes, we've got that coming up.
Playter Greag Coasalees brought to you by our good friends
at Seattlesider. Let me tell you. If you're going to
the game today and you're bringing the family, you're looking
for a place to go before the game, Seattle Sider
tap Room is now open for all ages. You can
stop there. Of course. It's just south of the stadiums
(02:54):
and Soto right there, the Seattlesider tap Room. Just google
the address, easy to find, just between East Marginalway. First
out in yourself, great food there as well, have a
couple of Siders, get yourself ready to go, and again
it is open for all ages. Now that's new this year. Well, Greg,
we got a lot to talk about. I think I
think Baker Mayfield just competed another pass against the Seahawks.
(03:14):
By the way, it just it just happened moments ago.
That was something else.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
That game was crazy. I think what were there about
ten total incompletions with both quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
At one point, at one point in the second half,
those two guys had not thrown an interception through the
entire third quarter or I'm sorry, incompletion. It was crazy. Yeah,
it was nbelieved crazy.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
It was a fun game. I mean I saw a
lot of it lied because it was it was a
late game, right, wasn't it. Yes, yeah, one o'clock and
then of course I watched the tape on both sides,
but yeah, it was. It was a fun game to watch.
You know. Baker Mayfield was. He's been that way all season.
He's been very, very sharp, very sharp, And yeah it was.
(03:57):
It was a tough game for the defense for Seattle.
I mean, you know, it's I thought. I thought the
Bucks did a really good job conceptually attacking use of motion,
you know, ways to get you know, one thing I've
been thinking a lot about, and I think it applies
to Sam Donald as well, is I've been given a
lot of thought to the marriage between the the sort
(04:19):
of the offensive scheme and how they go about the
process of putting the plan together and they and the
play calling during the game, and how that impacts the quarterback,
because you know, we always look at a quarterback like
when you see a quarterback throw a ball to a
receiver that it's clearly as primary reading the receiver is
relatively open, you know, by NFL standards. You know, we
(04:41):
always say great throw by the quarterback, you know, but
when you get right down to it, it's really the
scheme that presents the clean defined throws. You know, we're
seeing that a lot with Indianapolis with Daniel Jones. Taking
nothing away from the fact that he's executing everything at
a really high level, as is Donald, but there's there's
so much scheme involved in that, and that's something I've
(05:03):
given a lot of thought to because you know, there's
very few transcendent quarterbacks, you know, even the ones we
think of as being great. You know, it's all part
of his scheme. It's all. It's all, let's see if
we can get the primary open. Let's see if we
can make it clean and defined for the quarterback so
it presents it to him. He can drop back, he
can hit his back foot, he can deliver the football.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
So you're telling me the coaching matters and football is
that you're telling me, Greg co Sell?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Yeah, And I'm coming to think that it meant you know, look,
we know that everybody always says coaches always say it
because they're not going to say, gee, look at me,
I did a great job. No coach says that, you know,
but you know coaches always say, oh, it's the players,
it's the players, as they should. And you know, you
hear a ton of people say things like it's the
Jimmy's and the Joe's more than the Exers and the O's,
you know that kind of stuff. Sometimes I don't know
(05:48):
if that's true at a high percentage of the time.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Greg Cozell brought to you by a friend, the Seattlesider.
Let's stay with the Seahawk defense against Trevor Lawrence Jaguars
and then just kind of look back at the Seattle defense. I,
you know, talking to my friend Hugh Millan for a
hardcool football segment on Monday, and sitting I went to
the game, I was in the press box on Sunday,
and I was just amazed at what you just said,
(06:16):
you know, by NFL standards, how open some of the
receivers were against that, against that Mike McDonald defense. Now
they're missing Devin Witherspoon, probably missing him again this week.
Julian Love probably missing him again this week. They do
get DeMarcus Lawrence back, it sounds like, so that should
help there. Wolan will wait and see what happens because
he's in concussion protocol, but it didn't sound too serious.
(06:37):
We'll see if he can get on the field. So
they're down some guys, certainly in that secondary Greg. But
you know, I just you kind of you have a
guy we're just talking about coaches, Mike McDonald. I think
this guy is just this genius. And yet he came
into the press conference afterwards, we're all sitting there and
he says, that's on me. That is one hundred percent
on me. It's not on the players. He kind of
took responsibility, which I like the accountability. But you know,
(07:00):
usually Mike McDonald's able to, you know, at least win
some of those battles. He didn't win any battles on Sunday.
So what will Jacksonville try to do? What did you
see on tam I.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Mean, you know, the Seahawks, there have been a couple
of things through five games that have been pretty defined.
Now again after last week, Mike McDonald might, you know,
try to tweak a few things. That's what coaches do,
is the season progresses. But you know, through five games,
they've played eighty six percent of their defensive snaps and
Nickel it's the highest percentage in the NFL. They've not
been a high percentage blitz defense. They're five man pressures.
(07:33):
It's near the bottom of the NFL in terms of percentage.
So essentially there are a nickel defense that that rushes
for that's the way they've played now. If you can't
get to the quarterback, or if the quarterback, as Baker
was last week, is incredibly decisive and being able to
get rid of the football, then you're not going to
get there.
Speaker 4 (07:53):
Now.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Trevor Lawrence is not Baker. Trevor Lawrence is not anywhere
near as decisive as Baker Mayfield. In fact, one of
the things that in my view, based on extensive tape
study of Trevor Lawrence, that has held him back from
being what he was supposed to be coming out of
Clemson is that I'm not sure based on tape that
he's a really quick processor. I think he's a little
(08:15):
slow at times in that regard, and you know you're
trying to get him to be better at that. Obviously,
he's a gifted player, good arm, very mobile, by the way,
far more mobile than people might think. You know, you're
not going to say he's Lamar Jackson, but he is
a really mobile athlete for a big man, and that's
one of his best traits.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Well, we saw that with on Monday Night Football. He
gets stepped on by the lineman gets up, he's athletic,
he made his way to the end zone for the
game win. He played. But yeah, you know, his numbers,
even with the new offensive minded head coach, are no
better this year. Is is you know? NFL numbers are
no better this year than they were last year.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
No.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
And then, as I said, I think he struggles at
times with how quickly he sees it, how correctly he
sees it. And therefore I just you know, he's not
as decisive, consistent only as he needs to be, whereas
Baker is very decisive Seattle.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
I want to go back to the blitz right for
a second, and what they can see against a guy
like Trevor Lawrence, because yes, he can run and that
can hurt you, certainly if you don't get home. The
only time they touched Baker Mayfield, I believe the one sack,
and I think the other two quarterback hits were all
on a blitz of some sort, like a safety or
quarter blitz. Right, So Derek Hall is not going to play,
he might be their best edge rusher. I don't know
(09:27):
where boy A Mafi is right now, like I don't
know where fifty three is. Feels like he's losing money
by the week in a contract year. But is this
kind of tells me that you're what you're telling me
is that maybe Trevor Lawrence is a guy you can
have success if he blitz against him.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
Well, I think you want to show him color, you know,
at times for sure opposing Jersey color. Now, there were
times last week that he was back and Evian Warry
was used as an edge glitzer, you know, just a
couple of times, and he played I think thirty nine
snaps and then they ended up in the pure pass
situations playing Kendrick in the slot. I assume since Witherspoon
(10:02):
you said, will likely be out this week, that they'll
do something similar. So we'll see. I mean, look, Mike
McDonald is a smart guy. You know, he knows his
defense better than I do. You know, everything is also
dependent on who you're playing.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
You know.
Speaker 3 (10:15):
Sometimes I remember years and years ago, Jeff Fisher was
in our building. This is when he was still coaching,
and you know, I was watching tape and he stopped by,
and it's when Tom Brady was still playing, and we
just started talking about pressure. Because Jeff and Dave McGinnis,
I think Dave McGinnis was on that staff and they
were big pressure guys. But he said, you know, guys
(10:36):
that get rid of it. And I remember this conversation
that could happen yesterday. He said, the guys that get
rid of the ball really quick. You know, you're wasting
a guy because he's not going to get there. So
why add a guy into the pass rush he's not
going to get there. You're taking a guy out of coverage.
So again i'm not saying that's Mike McDonald's philosophy, but
if you just think about that rationally, it makes sense,
(10:57):
you know. But Trevor's not that guy. So you know,
it could be very interesting to see because Mike McDonald
at times in his career, both with Baltimore and at Michigan,
because I remember watching his tape quite a bit in
Michigan because of course Michigan always has defensive players coming
out in the draft. He blitzed. I mean, I'm not
saying he was super high percent in you know, sixty
seventy percent, but he had a lot of really good
(11:20):
pressure concepts and you know they're all in his playbook,
believe me. So this maybe this is a week he
decides I'm going to do a little more of that.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Greg Cosel joining us NFL Film ESPN Matchup Show brought
to you by our friend at Sales Center again. Stop
buying the way of the baseball game later on this
afternoon on your way in. It's open. The tap room
is for all ages, food served as well. Great place
to go prefunk before the game today. Last week we
saw and we talked about him a lot, you and
I did. Last week. Greg an elite rookie wide receiver
at Mecha BUCA. Obviously, obviously Bucky Irving was out for
(11:51):
Shad White, scored a touchdown, but they couldn't really run
the ball effectively against Seattle. This week's skill wise, outside
of Trevor Lawrence, I know they've got a tight end
on injury reserve. Now, they don't have a Mecca at BUKA.
I don't even know. I don't know how ATM stacks
up against the better backs in the league. But what
are their skill guys look like?
Speaker 3 (12:08):
Well, the thing about atn is he's explosive, So you
got to be you know those guys as you know
that can take it to the house. He's one of
those guys. So you know, and he's actually had a
pretty solid season. You know, they want to run the ball.
They like to get him on the perimeter if they
can where there's more space. But you know, the thing
have to be concerned about it is he's one of
those guys that if there's space, he can take it
(12:29):
to the house. Now they do have Brian Thomas. Brian
Thomas coming off his rookie season would have been seen
as a better receiver clearly than than a Mecca Abuka.
I mean, Thomas is six to three and he can run,
and they've got they've got pretty good receivers. Now this
year with Thomas and Lawrence, it's just for whatever reason,
it doesn't seem like they've they've been in sync. Although
(12:52):
Lawrence hit him for a big, big play on that
winning drive. If people watch the game on Monday night,
they saw that it was a great ball. It was
a beauty if we throw a ball, he couldn't have
handed it to him any better. But you got to
be careful with Brian Thomas Travis Hunter. You know, it's
funny they know more than I do. Okay down in Jacksonville,
but I almost feel like he hasn't been a factor
(13:13):
either as a receipt or as a corner. And again
I'm not suggesting that they play him just in one spot.
They like I said, they know better, but I feel
like he just hasn't been a big factory either way.
And maybe if he just played one position, maybe he
would be. But he's a guy that has tremendous explosive quickness,
so you know you do have to be careful. And
he's a guy that if he does get the ball
(13:35):
in their space, like if you throw him a tunnel
screen or you throw him a short ball in their space,
he does have that juice, so you know you have
to be careful with him. Parker Washington has become a
sort of a seemed like a security blanket for Trevor Lawrence,
so you know they do have guys. The tight end
position is not a position, you know, theoretically from a
(13:56):
pass game perspective, you would.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
Have to worry about good because Kate at and we
worry about him last week and saw him do some
damage that Greg COSTI. Let's flip the other side the football.
I do believe this might be a bigger challenge defensively
than Sam Darnold sah last week. Maybe with the Devin
Luyden company.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
This is a really interesting defense. They're they're you know,
they're Their numbers aren't great, if you other than turnovers
where I think they leave the league, which you know
you can't count on those every single week. Their pressure rate, though,
is high. And and I tell you they have a
first year coordinator named Anthony Kepanelli. I think he's doing
a really good job with his pressure concepts, his schemes.
(14:33):
You know, it's you know, everybody saw the interception by
by Lloyd on on Monday night when he went ninety
nine yards. That was a great scheme. I think Mahomes
pointed out that he hadn't seen that on film. They
do a really good job with their pressure schemes, and
you've really you're online really has to be aware of
that because it's it's not They're not easy to play
(14:54):
against in that regard. And obviously they just made the
trade now so they're gonna have Greg Newsom on the
outside instead of Tyson Campbell, so you know, and obviously
Newsome has not been there, so I don't know how
that impacts, you know, the the volume that they're going
to want to call during the game.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
I know this. Devin Lloyd was a nightmare when he
played at Utah where you know, we saw that here
Washington and Washington State fans saw that. I don't need
to see that on Sunday, sir.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
Yeah, he was a lot so I was the first
round pick, and and you know he's sort of been
up and down in the league. But this year, through
the first you know, month, month, you know, and a week,
he's played really really well.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
I like the glance of the calendar. I always do
that too. What month are we in? I have no idea.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
Great, Yeah, I'm with you on that. I'm totally with
you on that.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
Do you like what the what the Seahawks did with
Ken Walker on Sunday last week?
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Well, you know, it gets into that same that same question.
You know, he played twenty seven snaps and Charbonney played
thirty four, and I think Walker only had ten carries
if I'm not mistaken. You know, again, this is I
don't know. So I'm not gonna sit here and say
they're right or wrong.
Speaker 5 (15:59):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
I'm not there, but I would like to see Walker
get a few more carries.
Speaker 6 (16:05):
Now.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
That game, that game had a certain feel to it,
as you know, Ian, I mean, some games get a
feel and you just feel like you got to keep
matching and you keep throwing. And obviously they were having
great success throwing the ball, so why not keep doing it?
But overall, I'd like to see Walker more along the
lines of what he was the week before when he
had nineteen carries. You know, to me, I'd like to
(16:27):
see it. Maybe they maybe they feel differently.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
Well I think what yeah, I think you said the
feel the game was where it felt like and I'm
sure they felt the same way on the other sideline too,
that it like we have to score every possession. It
kind of had that feel, right, like you had to
score every single.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
Possession, not as if they were throwing the ball badly,
you know, no.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
No, no, you know. I love what aj Barner's been
doing at the tight end position zone in the in
the red zone. We haven't seen a red zone tight
end forever in Seattle.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
I love what they and the fact and they're calling
place for him, which is really you know, that tells
you what they think of him. You know, now again
you're not going to talk about him, you know, with
the brock Bowers in the league, and you know, those guys.
But I think he's been a really solid tight end.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
Brock Bowers is he's still playing this league. I don't
even know. It's like he's like everybody else. Well, Greg,
you're the only guy in the league not hurt right now,
all right, like like everyone else is hurt.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
I'm still day to day and I'm still day to day.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
I think we all are. I mean, it's been a
brulliant year for injuries. Like, honestly, now joking aside, it's
been it's like like from an NFL standpoint, like too
many stars have been hurt. So well, it's it feels
I'll wrap it up with this, Greg. It just feels
like a really dangerous game for Seattle, a very pivotal
game for Jacksonville. My goodness, they can go to five
and one. I mean, it's it sets up for I
(17:43):
mean it's early for us out here, it's ten in
the morning, but it just feels like a really pivotal,
really big test for both teams.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
And were just in Tampa, then they flew home, right
and now they're they were in Seattle.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
They were in Seattle. They were yeah yeah, right, that's right, right, yeah, yeah,
but there but still yeah, Jacksonville gets this Jacksonville a
short week, but they're at home for back to back.
It just feels it feels dangerous. As one of the
ones that started the year. You kind of think, hey,
this that you go get this one. And now you
look in their four and one, so oh.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Yeah, A lot of people probably saw when you know,
when the schedule came out that Jacksonville, you know that's
that's going to be a win. But they're playing well,
I mean, you know, and like I said, their defense
has been probably a whole lot better than people anticipated.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
All Right, well, you got the suit on, so you
look good. You go do what you need to do
in that suit today on this Friday, all right, uh,
and we'll check in with you next week.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
I'm actually watching I'm watching last night's game between the
Eagles and the Giants.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Oh, if you're an Eagles fan, probably not something you
want to rewatching.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
People are not happy here in the in the Philadelphia area,
you know.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
You don't you don't say. And the baseball team lost
as well, and the baseball.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
Team lost play that you just you probably saw. You
just have to feel so badly for for oryan Kicker.
I mean, you know just you can tell you know
what I almost felt watching it because I think football
way too much. It was like a quarterback in the
pocket rushing, like you could tell, all of a sudden
and everything start to happen too fast for him, and
he just you know, the brain froze. You know, it
(19:05):
just happened way too fast.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
Well, condolences of your friends that are in Philadelphia. Hopefully
we're not having that same feelings later tonight here in
Seattle after Game five against the Tigers. We will talk
to you next week, my friend. Thank you all right, Ian,
thanks so much, great Cozelle joining us here as he
does every week. Thanks of Seattle Cider. Will take a break.
Danny O'Neil talking Mariners Game five. Let's get into it.
Coming up next.
Speaker 1 (19:28):

All right, here we go. Danny O'Neil joined this big
Thanks the Northwest Handling Systems for all of their So
I go to my computer this morning on the day
of Game five of the Alds. Danny O'Neil, Andrews is
Jack Anders you Jack? Are you Jack?
Speaker 7 (20:10):
I see you?
Speaker 2 (20:10):
Yes, we're all Jack. We're all Jack. Here we go,
And Dannie O'Neil, you and I are on the same
page with this Huskies and Cougar's coming together. I'm kind
of looking at the same way. I'm kind of glass
half full. I think they're gonna win this thing. I
don't know why. Maybe it's because I've suffered long enough,
but I think they're gonna win this thing.
Speaker 8 (20:27):
I am not fearful of the out I'm excited to
see what happens. And it's not even I wouldn't even
say it's a confidence. It's just like I'm ready. I'm
ready for this, I'm ready to go. I'm not sort
of dreading and oh my gosh, this is how it
always happens, Like none of those sort of feelings are
going through it.
Speaker 5 (20:43):
Is really like, yeah, man, I'm excited to see how
this turns.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Out because we've been through this so many times. Danny's
wearing his Mariner's hat right now, which is sensational.
Speaker 8 (20:53):
I got I've got a Edgar oh kidding Jersey like
a mesh a mess Jersey. I've been rocking here in
New York to represent for the faithful chosen here. I,
by the way, I wanted to now.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
I don't want to beggars, can't be choosers. I wanted
it to be the Yankees for a variety of reasons.
So they didn't win for people. Though Danny sits there
in New York. He's best sales sport's riding that you
get outside of Seattle from New York. And with the
dang apostrophe you were telling me off the year is interesting.
The I said, are they morning in New York and
you said only a small percentage. I found that interesting.
Speaker 8 (21:32):
Twenty percent of the city, I would guess, is mourning
the Yankees loss, and those twenty percent feel it, and
it's very fun to tease in pok and prod them.
And there are more Yankee fans than Mets fans. The
difference is that I would say most of the city
is not. They're not passionate Yankee fans. They are more
(21:53):
inclined to enjoy Yankee defeats. It's no one's agnostic about
the Yankees here.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
Love them either.
Speaker 8 (22:01):
You love them and and feel that it is their
birthright to win a championship every year, and if they don't,
somebody needs to be held accountable or you're like most
of us, in which they annoy the Bejesus out of you.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
And when they lose, it's.
Speaker 8 (22:16):
An awesome opportunity to be slightly patronizing towards them and say, like, oh,
I thought they showed so much heart the way they
came back in Game three, they came back in the
way they came back.
Speaker 5 (22:25):
You gotta, I mean, you can't.
Speaker 8 (22:27):
I know it's disappointing, but they're the first team ever
to go down one zero in a three game wildcard
series and come back and win it like that means something,
and they want they want no part of that, which
is great.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Let's go let's go look at this thing tonight and
maybe just use past history. And every team is different.
I know, you know, I kind of sometimes hate when
I see things college football is the worst with this
when they give you the game notes where read the
game notes and they start talking about, well, you know
this happened, this happened, and you know these are the tenants. Well, like,
they're never the same rosters right now. Sometimes there's the
same culture and things like that. Maybe it's the same coach,
(23:02):
but there is no same roster or culture. But I
think for us in Seattle, it's worth revisiting the past
history at heartbreak we've had. And I always I was
in Salt Lake in two thousand and one, so I
watched from Afar. In fact, I remember, you know, I
got the MLB package was early days of DirecTV in
that I'm watching games in my basement in Salt Lake City,
(23:23):
and I remember how disappointed it was. But it was
such a weird deal, but it was disappointing. And I
heard somebody say something this morning, Danny, you know, we
feel like this Mariner team with some of the core
pitchers and cal and everything, that hey, they're going to
be around for a while. But oh one proved one thing.
There's no guarantee. That's why tonight's huge. There's no guarantee.
Speaker 8 (23:43):
Yes, and you're you're not going to get me to
participate in any sort of what constitutes a success for
this season. I firmly believe if you get in the playoffs,
you've got a shot, and this team has a great shot.
But you're also not gonna sell me on it's going
to be okay if they don't win it, because this
isn't like the NFL, like the situation you had with
(24:04):
the Seahawks in twenty twelve where they lost it Atlanta
in heartbreaking fashion, but you could look at it and say,
you've got the quarterback, you've got the pieces in place.
The way the NFL works, you know you're gonna have
that unit for three or four years. You have absolutely
no clue what the future is gonna hold for this
Mariners team. No matter how good you think the young
nucleus looks, you don't know if you're gonna get this
(24:25):
sort of opportunity again. And it is a great opportunity.
And I agree with you about sort of the looking
at history and what matchups mean. We've become so accustomed
to probabilities that you lose sight of the fact that
probabilities only give you a faint idea about what's gonna
(24:46):
have Actually happen in this one out. The fact that
the Mariners have won three games that Trek Scoople started
this year, I'm not sure how much that has to
do with what's going to happen tonight. I like to
tell you, hey, that's past history is the greatest sign
of what's gonna happen. But if I felt that way, well,
I'm pretty sure that Carry Carpenter is gonna homer off
(25:07):
of George Kirby.
Speaker 5 (25:08):
Because he's hit five home runs off of him too.
The truth is, we don't know anything that's gonna happen tonight.
Speaker 8 (25:14):
This is a one off, absolute outlier.
Speaker 5 (25:19):
Nothing can tell you what is going to occur tonight.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
But you know, Danny, that great point, because let me
let me take it to this point. The if I
look at at the Seahawks like you did. You were
there with me, both in New York and in Phoenix Glendale,
to be exact, and I remember, I remember in New
York what they said after every guy I remember ever
get this is the start. This is the start. And
(25:43):
then they got back, which is great. They got back,
you know, cal saying hey, we're gonna win this planking thing.
You know, we're all thinking that this is and then
we got there back to Glendale and it didn't happen
for a variety of reasons. I mean, the one play
obviously we will look at, but it didn't happen and
they never got back. So you just don't know, and
baseball that like, you don't know. So I mean that
(26:03):
past history does haunt us as Seattle sports fans. What
do you think of the decision to go Kirby as
opposed to the Rock Castill? What do you think of that?
Speaker 8 (26:12):
I think Kirby's the better picture. I think Kirby's had
the better year. I like the decision. I think Castillo
is great and competitive. Everything that I needed to know
I saw in Kirby's reaction to that home run he
gave up to Kerry Carpenter in Game one of the
series that he is he is.
Speaker 5 (26:30):
Everybody is engaged and ready to go, and he's had
the best stuff.
Speaker 8 (26:33):
I love the decision to start Kirby, and I would
have been disappointed if it hadn't been him. I don't
think he gets a long leash, but I think Kirby's
the right guy to go with.
Speaker 2 (26:44):
Yeah, that's my lovely wife's birthday today. And my daughter.
We were just talking and she's getting the I don't
know ifink guys have nothing but bunt cakes out there
in New York.
Speaker 5 (26:51):
Yeah, we do.
Speaker 2 (26:52):
Yeah, And so we're getting those tonight and we're talking
about flavors, and it's kind of like Kirby Castill, I
really you can't go wrong unless you go lemon. Maybe
I don't know, but uh, but but you honestly can't
go wrong like confetti, chocolate chip, what I mean, you
can't go wrong Kirby CASKI And we know Cassie will
be there, like if it's if it's like, he'll be
(27:12):
out there, I don't think. And Anders helped me out here.
You and Chris have talked about this. If if he
gets in trouble, they won't probably bring him in mid inning.
But but he would be a guy that would start
like an inning, right, So.
Speaker 6 (27:24):
It's hard to predict what Dan Wilson does, to be
completely honest, but uh, sometimes, like I would, I would
assume that because he's a starter who has very little
to no relief history, then yeah, he would get a
clean inning out.
Speaker 8 (27:37):
With assume We've never seen a starting pitcher brought into
a playoff game in a high leverage situation and have
that backfire at least rob.
Speaker 5 (27:51):
My bad.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
Weren't we weren't we just talking about past history. I
don't do that.
Speaker 5 (27:57):
What's gonna happen?
Speaker 2 (27:58):
No, gosh, Neil brought to by Northwest Handling Systems for
a couple more moments. Yeah, I mentioned the Yankees. I
wanted to be them. It will be Toronto and and
the Blue Jays will host the first couple and then
it will be interesting to see. There is part of me,
this is the weird, morbid part of me that says, Okay,
it's Toronto, Let's see what it looks like. How many people?
(28:20):
Because you had to buy like these scripts of tickets
and a massive amount of money, So like do people
sell a game or two? And what's that ballparking to
look like? On what would it be Wednesday Thursday? I
think right, Wednesday Thursday, something like that. Yeah, what would
it look like? Toronto is a beautiful, beautiful city. I
think it is a fantastic place to visit. In fact,
(28:42):
the number of Persian bakeries that are up there one
of the best eating cities in North America. And I
think next week could be a fantastic time if you
were looking for some sort of getaway, some sort of
opportunity to get out there. I think that there would
be a fantastic time for people from Seattle. It might
be the perfect time for people from Seattle go visit Toronto.
I like that even better. You'll watch Rutgers at all
(29:04):
tonight we hat the Hawks coming up top of the hour.
Speaker 5 (29:06):
I certainly will be tuned to it.
Speaker 8 (29:08):
I'm not sure if it's going to demand the majority
of my attention. It would probably be a bad sign
if it does, because I think that the Huskies should
win this game. I feel pretty strongly about I always
scored twenty eight points on these guys. Iowa not known
for its offense, not known for any of its ability
(29:29):
to do it. So if Iowa can hang twenty eight
on them, I don't care if they're coming off of
a bye. I would like this to be one that
I occasionally check on in the second half and then
watch them watch fully on replay when I can dedicate
time to it.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
Tell people about the day apostrophe, sir.
Speaker 8 (29:43):
It is a newsletter that originates from New York City.
Sometimes I tell you the things that I figured out
from a Seahawks game. The mysteries that I'm still trying
to solve, like what the hell is going on with
Devin Witherspoon and his knee?
Speaker 2 (29:55):
It plays every step and then ten days later can't play.
So that what you mean? Yeah? That what's going on?
Speaker 5 (30:00):
What's happening here?
Speaker 8 (30:02):
You insert your email address into Danny O'Neil dot com
and I start sending emails with those sort of questions
and hopefully periodically answers.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
Danny. One week from today, let's talk ALCS.
Speaker 5 (30:12):
I would love to be doing that.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
If we don't talk at ALCS one week from today,
we'll know why. But we'll either talk at one. We'll
either talk about it or we'll just talk football. So
one way or the other. Dang aposter. You go check
it out big thanks in Northwest Handling Systems. Daniell talk
to you in week. Enjoy the night tonight sounds good.
Speaker 5 (30:27):
Take care guys.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
That's Dannie O'Neil. We'll put a wrap on things hopefully
here from the clubhouse. Maybe even manager Dan Wilson coming
up next night. Three point three.
Speaker 9 (30:34):
KJTERFM Now back to Football Friday, sponsored by Tito's handmade Vodka.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
On your home for the NFL Sports Radio ninety.
Speaker 6 (30:47):
Three point three.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
All Right football at baseball Friday. We should point out
Dan Wilson speaking to the media moments ago at t
Mobien Park at a game five. He was asked about
the difference between being a manager and a player.
Speaker 10 (31:02):
In a game five, you feel all the emotions that
you know, you kind of cycle through it all. But
I think, you know, you get to the point where
you know, first pitch happens, and uh, you know, you
get back to sort of groundedness and and uh you know.
Speaker 7 (31:17):
You're you're ready to kind of business as usual at
that point.
Speaker 11 (31:20):
And you know, I think this has been you know,
a long journey for sure, and and.
Speaker 7 (31:26):
Uh, you know that's why there is so much emotion
to it. But once we once once you.
Speaker 11 (31:31):
Know that first pitch is thrown, I think you're you're
back to where you want to be.
Speaker 7 (31:34):
And and uh, you know, back in that state where
you're ready for anything tear in the front of me.
Speaker 4 (31:43):
You know, Hey, if you guys advanced tonight, I think
would you expect to have Brian, who won the.
Speaker 7 (31:48):
Next Crosster at the house he can go home?
Speaker 11 (31:50):
Yeah, I mean I think Brian's got you know, bullpen
today and uh, you know see how he kind of
bounces back from that, and obviously the decision you're gonna
have to make pretty quickly once once this, you know,
a game concludes tonight. So yeah, I mean, I we'll we'll,
we'll cross that bridge when we get there. But you know,
we're certainly hopeful.
Speaker 4 (32:09):
Sure's a hands on dead situations and obviously specifically Loy
with Gilbert, you need a little.
Speaker 7 (32:15):
Two days, you know, I think it is all hands
on debt. You know, you want to do everything you
can to to see another day.
Speaker 11 (32:22):
And so you know, I suspect Logan and the Rock
and even Bryce Miller probably down in the bullpit tonight,
available and ready to pitch.
Speaker 7 (32:31):
I know these guys want the ball in.
Speaker 11 (32:33):
These situations, and you know it's uh, it's it's it's exciting.
Speaker 7 (32:38):
This is this is what this time of year is
all about. And these guys are ready for the moment.
Speaker 12 (32:42):
Who are running on the r Dan, how how FLEXI
were do you guys have to be with your approach
of the play against School just going off of what
you're seeing early, I mean, you like to put pitches on,
but if he's able to command early.
Speaker 7 (32:54):
You don't want to be behind it either.
Speaker 12 (32:56):
How flexible and how how can you get a read
even in the first teeing off?
Speaker 7 (33:01):
Yeah, I mean I think you know a couple of things.
Speaker 3 (33:03):
You know, you.
Speaker 11 (33:05):
Have to to kind of make the adjustments as you go.
Speaker 7 (33:08):
And you're right.
Speaker 11 (33:09):
You know, we've been able to put some pitches on
them over the course of the games that we've seen.
Speaker 7 (33:13):
In this this season.
Speaker 11 (33:15):
But again, it kind of goes back to that communication
factor that we've talked about and the first couple of
guys getting their ads, seeing what they see, you know,
coming back in the dugout and sharing that information and uh,
you know, kind of relaying that to the next hitters. Uh,
so they have an idea and that's that's how it grows,
and that's how it's going to continue to go tonight.
Speaker 7 (33:34):
You know, we'll just you have to be ready to
make those adjustments.
Speaker 11 (33:37):
It's a buying balance between being too selective and and
getting behind or being too aggressive and and uh, you know,
swinging the pitches you don't want to swing at so
h but our guys have been great.
Speaker 7 (33:47):
They've been able to solve that that part of it.
Speaker 11 (33:50):
You know, when they face Schoogle before, so I think
they have a good track record of making those those
good adjustments looking for Yeah.
Speaker 7 (33:59):
I mean you first got to know George Kirby.
Speaker 11 (34:01):
What was the impression that you took away that helps
prepare him to meet this moment? You know, George has
he's you know, got something inside that's special and you know,
I think you don't see it sometimes until he takes
the mount in these big moments, and we've seen it
this year and we've seen it in some big ball
games that he's taken the mound, and you know, I
(34:22):
think there's there's nothing you know, there's no bigger.
Speaker 7 (34:25):
Moment than tonight. And I think that's what we're gonna
see from George again tonight.
Speaker 11 (34:28):
And it's that uh you know, it's that voice inside
that won't take no for an answer, and uh, you know,
you've got to love to see that from your starter
And I'm looking forward to see George out there tonight.
Speaker 7 (34:39):
Brady.
Speaker 11 (34:40):
Before then, since you have that full bold at your supposal,
would you be willing to use Horius Morbiles before the night.
Speaker 13 (34:46):
Dak if you felt a called for it. Yeah, I
mean I think we have to be open to anything tonight.
You know, that's what that's what this game calls for.
And and uh you know again that's what these moments
call for.
Speaker 11 (34:57):
And you know, you don't want to get to too
far away from what we've done that's helped us be successful.
But at the same time, you want to live to
see another day. So again there's a balance there that
you have to strike it. You know, I think we're
we'll be ready for whatever justice we have to make.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
Tall hands on deck from Dan Wilson I game five
five o'clock. Remember again, it's on Fox thirteen. It's not
on FS one, on FS two, no truck races, no
MLB coming back late from commercial breaks. Fox thirteen has
that game for you. Now we here on KJR. We'll
have postgame Husky's coming up at two o'clock, so obviously
(35:34):
that will be over there. Nine to fifty. We have
a postgame show to night Andrews.
Speaker 6 (35:38):
You're a part of it, correct, yes, sir, So, Chris
and I if you guys have listened before on the
postcast Mariners postcast on Lockdown Mariners on YouTube. We will
also be on KJR for the first about twenty minutes
or so, just instant reaction as soon as the final
pitch ends, Chris Crawford and myself Anderson Hurst got you covered.
And then we'll toss it over to Chuck and Buck
after they get to kind of be a part of
the celebrations hopefully, and then they'll take you the rest
(35:59):
of the way here on the base Paul's Best Postgame
Show on nine fifty KJR.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
And let me just point out again just soebody knows,
it's on nine to fifty Am is where Baseball's Best
is tonight. You can also listen to that, and maybe
the easier way to listen if you're driving around, if
you're walking around, if you're at the Husky game is
on the iHeartRadio app. But make sure you're on the
nine fifty AM, nine p fifty on the KGr on
the iHeartRadio app nine fifty on the app for Baseball's
(36:24):
Best Postgame show while others are doing commercials and sponsors
and these guys will be talking baseball. Hopefully you will
be celebrating with them. Hopefully you'll be checking that out
and getting ready for the Alcs coming up on Sunday.
That's it for US Husky Hawks. Coming up next right
here on your home, The Huskies and the Crack in
ninety three point three KJRFM
