Speaker 1 (00:00):
Starting the show off today and yes, of course it's
Game three ALCS has just mentioned. Welcome in our show,
brought to you by Stollcloma Casino, also our sponsor for
MLB playoff coverageing INFNESCE with you today. Hey, listen, I
want to do just a little different today. Right out
the get go. We got stuer Mendel coming up here
at the bottom of the hour talking all things college football,
coach Holmgren and my c Hombrian at two o'clock is
weekly visit talking Seahawks. But I know, like, listen, the
(00:22):
main game in town, the biggest thing going on here.
We all know, Game three Mariners tonight taking on the
Toronto Blue Jays from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They're coming in here,
invading our country again. While some are some are Listen,
everyone's breaking the game down. Everyone's talking about here's this
spin rate, pitch this, all that stuff. Listen. You know
(00:43):
me like, I'm not into that. I'll leave that up
to Crawford and Ino Sarris and all the experts we
have on the show. I want to talk about what's
important as someone with deep Canadian ties and blood running
through me with my mom from moose Jo, Saskatchewan and Nelson,
BC and everything else up north. I'm torn a little bit,
but I know this. The Blue Jays aren't my team,
(01:04):
never were, never will be. I've got a guy joining
me right now that can maybe explain the Blue Jay
fandom a little bit better and what we may or
may not expect tonight. And you've heard him on these
ways before when Greg Bell was doing the show from
Tend to Noon, he was on quite a bit with him.
Farhan Lolgy is with TSN. For those who don't know,
TSN is basically the ESPN of Canada. Far Hand covers
(01:27):
everything across Canada and also the US. Basically he's their
NFL reporter and also their college football reporter. And he
joined us right now in the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Hello, sir,
how are you?
Speaker 2 (01:38):
I'm good, my friend. I always get to talk anything
Seattle sports with you. I know we have a big
Hutskies guys, so we'll go there. But Marris, it's a
lot of excitement to that. I can't wait.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
We will get to the Huskies because that's part of
the story with you. In a second, I want to
play a little clip and this is from yesterday you
posted something on x Twitter whatever we want to call
it these days, and I understand probably why. But we'll
get into it more in a second, because I think
a lot of our fans here in Seattle, they're stressed
and they're worried. They basically think the entire country north
(02:09):
of border are are Blue Jays fans, and they're you know,
it's it's almost Trump like. They're worried they're going to
come invade or something. I don't know what's going to happen.
Are we are we sending the National Guard up to
Blaine right now? I mean they're standing there at the
pce archs of the truck crossing making sure that nobody
comes across. But I think it's interesting again far Hunt
is as Canadian as it gets, all right, as at
(02:30):
TSN been there for twenty five years, I think, I
mean been there forever, big face of the of the
of the network up there, here's Canadian as it gets.
But take a listen to his post and we'll talk
about this from from last night and why it matters
to our fans here in Seattle.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Go ahead and ISSU you have fandom and what people
align themselves with. Well, for me. Distance matters. Now, I
don't think it should matter for you. I'm just telling
you that it matters for me. If you want to
cheer for the Blue Jays and you want to cheer
for them because you believe that you're more Canadian if
you do so, good for you. I'm not judging, but
(03:05):
I would appreciate not being judged because I don't cheer
for Canada's team because I don't believe in the notion
of a Canada's team.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
I believe in Team Canada.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
When there's an Olympics or a World Cup of Hockey
or pick the event World Juniors, and you can wear
a Team Canada jersey, red, big maple leaf on it
and it's full of Canadians and they represent our country.
I am all in. Team Canada is a fact. Canada's
team is an opinion and it's not one that I share.
(03:37):
So regardless of the sport, don't tell me that the
last teams standing or the only team standing in this
case with the Blue Jays, must be the team that
I need to align with, because other things matter to me,
and distance is one of them.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
All right, far Han, First of all, before we get
into the details of this and what part of Canada
is rooting for the Jays and not why? And it's
a lot. It's about twelve minutes and you can. I'll
retweet it today. Although you did tag me, I appreciate that.
I got like a zillion mentions now from all the
people on the border. I'm doing a crack Oh no,
it's fine, I do listen. I'm doing a crack it broadcast.
(04:12):
Last night, I looked down, I've got like, you know,
it says like twenty plus. I'm like, I didn't. Did
I do something? Did I get hacked? What's going on?
I looked out there and you would tag me on
about a twelve minute video. But I listened to it
on the way home last night after our hockey game,
and I thought it was really interesting because again I
think that there's this perception that all of Canada's a
Blue Jays fan, and that's not necessarily the case. But
why did you feel like you had to post that
(04:32):
last night?
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Well, because every time I post anything to support the
Mariners in any success that they're getting, I get a
lot of pushback from Canadian fans and some of it
is offside, right, I mean, some of it is racist.
Some of it is hey to port this guy out
of our country and people calling me a Canadian and
I am a proud Canadian. Yes, you know it matters
to me. But regional affiliation matters. So there's a ton
(04:55):
of there's a ton of Seahawks season ticket orders, almost
thirty five hundred seasons holders for the Seahawks that are
from British Columbia, right. Why Well, because it's their regional
team and that's the team they align with. In Toronto.
There's a huge number of Buffalo Bills fans. Why because
you can drive to the Buffalo to watch a game.
But for some reason, you know, in hockey, it's a
(05:15):
big thing up here that the last Canadian team standing
people should be cheering for as Canada's team. And I'm
think it'll wait a minute. Like if you know, if
you're a Canuck fan and you hated Edmonton all season
long and now you're supposed to cheer for them, that's
kind of not how it works. But then say, people
will say, well, okay, well with the Raptors and the
Blue Jays, because there are no other teams, you have
no excuse not to cheer for them. Well I do
(05:37):
because I grew up cheering for the Mariners. And I
think there's a divided fan base in British Columbia. I
do think the majority are Blue Jay fans. I don't
want to sit here and say it's you know, there's
a hidden number of Mariner fans, you know that rival
the blue Jay fans. I think there are Mariner fans here,
but the Blue Jay fandom here, the Blue Jay mafia.
It's kind of been cannibalized, right because when I grew up,
(05:59):
you could watch Mariner games in British Columbia on KSTW,
and I you know, another channel, cable back can't do
that anymore. You only get Blue Jay games. You only
get Blue Jay content. One of our sports networks, My
rival owns the Jays, they carry all their games, and
you can't get any Seattle content. So no, you know,
there's no wonder that they've got the fans that they have.
But it really is an emotional sticking point. And you
(06:22):
mentioned Trump a second ago, like all of those things
add layers to the argument and the conversation and the
tariffs and measure you've got to support Cana's team. Well,
I'll get this for you. My tariffs and taxes aren't changing.
The Blue Jays and Mariners win, So yeah, I mean
I grew up. I grew up on the Mariners, and
I hope they win well.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
And I think there's a lot of people like that,
you know, Like fandom is an interesting dynamic. It really
to me, It really is, because it's you know, you
mentioned that they're in that clip, and again there's a
whole We'll post the thing and people can go listen
to any I think it's fascinating, not just Blue Jays
and Mariners wise, but it's just you know, on being
a fan, Like you're a huge Husky fan, and I
get that. You know, you're a football guy. You grew
(06:58):
up you know up close that that was the team
close here, and you know, you go to a bunch
of games and I think you've been to a couple
of Rose Bowls and things like that. That's that's the
that's your team. I tell people all the time, I
grew up a Canucks fan. Well, why well, because it's
a hockey fan and I'm in Seattle and we had
BCTV and CBC, I could like Toronto. Not necessarily I
didn't want, you know, or but I was. I was
(07:20):
a Canucks fan. Now I'm torn because I worked for
their rival down here in Seattle, like literally get a
paycheck from their rival. So it's you know, like your
fandom change is pretty quick with a paycheck. But honestly,
like it's hard to kind of to to kind of
get rid of the normal emotions you have. But you know,
there's this massive stress here far hunt that that the
(07:41):
Blue Jays fans, much like the regular season, are going
to come pouring into Tea Mobile Park. Now, last I checks,
he had to play two road games. Didn't seem to
affect them that much up in Toronto. But nevertheless, what
are you hearing up there? Do you think there's a
lot of fans that are going to pay all that
money to buy tickets on the secondary market tonight and tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Well, I don't think.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
It'll be like it is during the regular season. I mean,
it happens like that in the season because there are
so many maritor tickets available right the easy access. Whereas
now I think it's going to be a little more difficult.
I think fans appear absolutely going to try to get
down there. I mean, this is a game of massive consequence,
and I don't know if the Mariners have done anything
to prevent it. And I could be wrong here, but
I recall in twenty twenty two when they played in
(08:22):
the short Series where Seattle won both games in Toronto,
that they were putting some things in place ticket wise
where you had to, you know, have a zip code,
not a postal code, and things like that to get tickets.
So I don't have anything like that's been done, but
I would think people are going to try. I just
don't think it's going to be easy for them to
get down, you know. And I remember a few months
ago people were talking about boycotting all things American, and
(08:45):
there was there were people at the border and border
based businesses, and I'm you know, I'm living in that
area that would talk to you all the time about
how their businesses and their economics were affected because people
weren't crossing the border. But I got news for you.
People that have Seahawk tickets are still crossing the border,
not leaving. So if Jay's fans have the ability to
get them, they'll they'll certainly try. But you know, do
(09:07):
I think there's gonna be ten thousand like there are
during the season. I mean, heck, you go to the
team stores at Tea Mobile. When the Blue Jays come
to town, the Mariners, they revel in it. They put
out Blue Jay souvenirs and jerseys and things like that
that you could buy. If you're gonna come, we're gonna
take your money. But I think it'll be a different
dynamic tonight. You'll probably get I would say, a couple
(09:27):
thousand fans that have managed to sneak their way in,
But it won't be like it is in the season.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Far honology from TSN joining us right now up in Canada,
all right in your home province up there of British Columbia, Like,
how torn are they with Blue Jays versus whether it
be Mariners or other fan or if they're baseball fans.
I know baseball's not the biggest sport up there, but
how torn are they? Because I do believe and going
on and doing stuff with your buddies Donnie and Dolly
(09:53):
every week. There is kind of an anti Toronto sentiment
up there as well, isn't there? So it almost feels
like there's a lot of people that's a popular belief
down here. Not every Canadian is rooting for a Toronto
based team.
Speaker 5 (10:04):
Right.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
You mentioned across Canada for the Stanley Cup, and if
you're a Canucks fan, you don't want Edmonton to win necessarily.
But you know there isn't there sort of an anti
Toronto slant going on as well, especially through Western Canada?
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Yeah, I mean I think there is a certain amount
of that in Vancouver. Look like you get it, right,
You get there's gonna be certain waws. You people that
just hate all things Washington and hate all things Seattle,
and it's kind of big brother little brother like that, right,
It's kind of a one way rivalry.
Speaker 6 (10:31):
Right.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
The folks in Toronto, they don't viewc any differently or
Vancouver any differently, but there are people in Vancouver that
just don't like the center of the universe mentality that
comes with Toronto and the fact that we are force
fed Toronto. Right that you know, an accident holds up
traffic on the Down Valley Parkway in Toronto and we
hear about it on national news in Vancouver, Right, So
there is a certain level of Toronto resentments that happens
(10:55):
on all things West Coast and really for other major cities, right,
they get a level of Toronto fatigue. So I think
there's some of that there, and I do think that
we're now getting you know, some closet Mariner fans that
maybe we're in it the mid nineties and into two
thousand and one that are able to come back now
and come back with a level of pride. So if
I were to handicap, but I'm not going to sit
here and say it's fifty to fifty, but it's probably
(11:16):
a lot closer than any Toronto fan would like to admit.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Is Toronto to the rest of Canada, especially Western Canada,
British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, maybe Manitoba is Toronto and all
things Blue Jays, maple Leafs, maybe even the Raptors a
little different because there's no other NBA team, but just
it's I guess same with MLB. But is Toronto the
same way as maybe a lot of us here in Seattle,
(11:41):
Frankly View, New York, maybe even LA at times, And
you come down to this country, you work here, you
cover a lot of NFL games at college football games,
You've got a better handle on both countries than most
people would. Is that kind of the same sentiment?
Speaker 2 (11:54):
Oh totally, yeah, that exists for sure, right again, the
content given to Toronto is very akin to the content
given the New York. And we talk about East Coast
biased all the time, and you know whatever, one team's
not ranked yet despite being five and one because they're
not paying attention back east, and yeah, there's certainly a
lot of that here. In the irony of all of
that is, I think Toronto wants its validation from New York,
(12:19):
right because they're kind of you themselves as being above
everything else in Canada. So what's next for them? Well,
we want to, you know, be a rival of New York.
So when you hear people from Toronto talk about their
rivals and they talk about the Yankees, I don't believe
the Yankees view Toronto the same way as Toronto used
The Yankees like their rival as Boston and you know,
the Red Sox and all of that. So there might
(12:40):
be a baseball rivalry to a point, but there's not
a fitty rivalry like they would be between New York
and Boston. But Toronto would like there to be. So
when you look at that dynamic, it is kind of
amusing that Torontonians, Toronto sports fans want their validation from
New York whereas maybe others in Canada want it from Toronto.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
So far on honolology from TSN joining it. So if
I get this correct, there might be a bunch of
fans from British Columbia and Western Canada down here watching
this game and help me out here, especially with the BC.
They might be wearing a Blue Jays hoodie tonight when
it's chili, but would they have maybe a Seahawk T
shirt underneath?
Speaker 2 (13:18):
Heck, yeah, this is absolutely Seahawk country, There's no doubt
about it. So yeah, you'll be getting a lot of that.
They't want to wave the flag and cheer for their
team mat but when it comes to football season they'll,
you know. And then I asked this question that what
would happen if all of the sudden Toronto got an
NFL team and you were a lifelong Seahawks fan, would you,
all of a sudden, you know, if you're a Seahawk
(13:40):
Blue Jay fan, would you all of the sudden switch
your allegiance to the you know, the Toronto NFL team?
And I think about eighty percent said no, they'd be
sticking with the Seahawks. Tried and sure, but the fact
that even twenty percent said they would contemplate and blew
my mind, because fandom is formed when you're a child, right,
generally your fandom happens. People talk about the good old
is it's usually around the time you're twelve to fifteen,
(14:03):
kind of in that range where those passions come and
the moments you spend going to the ballpark with your
dad happen, and all those kinds of moments are formulated.
It would be difficult barring a move, right like all
of a sudden you move to Detroit, you might just
decide you're going to get into that those teams and
things like that. But I was blown away to twenty
percent actually had the nerve to say, yeah, we would
switch our allegiance to Toronto just if that was the
(14:25):
only Canadian team. But it was still eighty percent.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
I completely respect, totally respect your football. IQ. SO and
I sat with an all transparency sat with Farhan a
couple weeks ago when the Tampa bay was in town
for that game of the SEAHAWKSYS and in press box
coverment for Ts Santas Area, MJA was next to us
on the other side. You've watched Mike McDonald's gonna quick
Fuugh on football. Before you let you go football, you've
watched Mike McDonald's team, You've watched them up close in person.
(14:51):
They lose that tough one, their defense bounces back last
week against Jacksonville. What are your impressions of what Mike
McDonald's doing in this team this year?
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Yeah, I mean, I think this defense has such a
ceiling and coming into the year, I really thought they
were a dark horse super Bowl contender. I thought that
this defense had the ability to carry.
Speaker 6 (15:09):
Them a long long way.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
By so many injuries, right, especially on the back end,
and until you get Devin Witherspoon back, and until you
get Loved back, they're gonna get exposed in certain spots,
right especially if they can't sustain you know, a full
time pass rush. And they've got some injuries up front there.
But look, when this group is healthy, they are absolutely,
in my mind, as good as any defense in the
National Football League right now. I love the way he
(15:32):
calls the game. I love the way he takes advantage
of matchups and specific skill sets that certain players have,
and you know, he's not afraid to be to do
it a little bit differently. And yeah, so because of that,
I think there's a huge ceiling with this group, and
you know, none of these injuries look like they're going
to be terribly long term or catastrophic. So I think
by the time we get to the back end of
the season, especially with the way some Darnold is going
(15:53):
right now, it's gonna be a pretty good group.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
All right, Well, I appreciate your time today, and I agree.
By the way, coming up to the bottom of the hour,
I'm and talk to my guy Stuart Mandel from The Athletic.
They're a senior college football writer. I'm gonna tell them
my impressions. This is my hot take of the week.
I'm not a hot take guy, Andrews right, I'm not
very much not hot take out at all. I don't care.
But watching Wazoo and Old Miss last week, you can't
(16:16):
tell me that Washington isn't a better team than Old Miss.
I don't care if you're looking ahead of Georgia or not.
And that pains me. Far Han, You know that pains
me to say that.
Speaker 7 (16:23):
It pays me.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
It pains me to say that. But I'm telling you, quarterback,
running back, wide receiving, corps, offensive line all better for Washington.
The defense, maybe it's a push, maybe probably a push,
but one team plays in the SEC and the other
team's not rank. So but I'm gonna tell him that
to that and that's just for you, Farhan for coming
on today. I'm gonna tell him. I'm I'm gonna give
him the my husky love coming up at bottom of
(16:45):
the hour, buddy.
Speaker 6 (16:47):
Love it pal.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
Thanks thanks for doing that, Thanks for having me on.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
Go Mariners, and thanks for tagging me. I appreciate all
the love from all my Canadian friends up north of
the border. Usually usually I only get that stuff when
I'm on with Donnie and Dolly up there and I
say something derogatory softy too.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
He takes softy too. He's gonna be some sad.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
He doesn't even listen. You'll find this hard to believe.
He doesn't even know what date it is right now.
His mind is a scramble. The guy's got adhd as
it is, and the Mariners are.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
I don't find that hard to believe at all.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
I'll talk to you soon, buddy.
Speaker 8 (17:17):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
Yeah, that's far honology from TSN joining us hopefully explaining
the Canadian fandom up there or maybe even coming down
here today. As mentioned as Stuart Mandel from the Athletic
Hill join us. Coming up next, former Top of the
Hour Factor Fiction at two thirty five nine three point
three KTERFM.
Speaker 8 (17:38):
It's time to go inside college football with Ian's weekly
visit with the Athletics Stewart Mandel. Brought to you by
Ben Holiday Bourbon. This football season, team up with a
glass of Ben Holiday Bourbon. This real Missouri bourbon bobbled
in bad represents the perfect union of distilling tradition and
modern day production. On the rocks are in a cocktail.
(17:58):
Pick up a bottle. Today must be twenty one. Please
enjoy responsibly now Stuart Mendel on your home for College
Football Saturdays, Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
All right, here we go, Stuart Mandel joining us. Yeah,
we're gonna get some college football in because I think
there's a baseball game tonight. I know there's a baseball
game tonight, but we got this is a big market.
I tried to explain to people, Stuart Mandel, that we're
in a big market here, Like you don't just go
to one sport. We're used to that this time of year,
we're used to just talking NFL and or college football.
But you know we can multitask and we're going to
do that right now. How are you, my friend, I'm good,
(18:35):
I'm good.
Speaker 5 (18:35):
I noticed last Friday night and you guys had the
Mariners going on and then you in that you know,
crazy X training game and at the very same time,
all right, Husky Stadium. Yeah, it was h that's some
activity going on.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
That's what happens in a big market. That's what happens
in a big market. LA had the same thing. They've had,
the Dodgers playing the same time as USC. Kings had
their home opener in the NHL the same night the Dodgers,
they're playing, Lakers playing preseason, and all that stuff happens.
We're okay with it. We just have to train people here.
The big thing, Stuart, Honestly, we're not used to having
baseball this time of the year. The organization has been
(19:10):
in business for forty nine years and this is about
as late as they've ever played. So that's that's our
that's our thing. We're trying to get used to all
of that and we're enjoying every second of it. Sports
are fun and a way we go. I want to
get to all the bigger picture things in college football,
especially Penn State and some you know, the rankings, college
football playoffs coming up soon and all those things. Let
me start first, just with some quick thoughts from you
(19:31):
on Michigan hosting Washington big noon kickoff on Saturday. I
bring that up. I watch the Michigan USC game the
other night. Michigan's an interesting team to me in a
lot of ways. I think Washington is vastly underrated by
people across the country. But give me, give me super
Mandel's thoughts on what you expect to see with Michigan
and Washington on Saturday morning.
Speaker 5 (19:51):
Yeah, I agree. I think I think Washington is very
underrated because a lot of people the only time they
saw them was against Ohio State, and that was not
a bad loss despite what the score said. And I
think Michigan is mildly overrated, not like egregiously, I think
the Oklahoma game that they lost, which at the time
(20:16):
kind of elevated Oklahoma's broke file, well, I think Oklahoma's
going to turn out to be not that great. We
kind of saw a hinto that against Texas. So I
don't know that Michigan. You know, they're not a playoff team.
Certainly they might be kind of a low top twenty
five team. Definitely an opportunity that for Washington. Now, I
think the tough thing for Washington is you're doing back
(20:36):
to back trips into the Eastern time zone. You know,
not back to back. But they've had a couple of
thos very recently. In the last one in Maryland was
a tough one, right, So the travel I always get
a little hung up on the travel in this new
big tent. But in terms of the matchup, great opportunity
(20:56):
for demon Williams, great opportunity for the Huskies.
Speaker 1 (20:59):
I agree. I think it's there's a couple of things
with that game Washington. Now, listen, I'm coog because I'll
know that pains me to say this. I'm not a
big hot take guy, but my hot take, I'll throw
this at you. I I would rather I think Washington
might be, when it's all said and done, a better
football team than Mississippi State. And I'm sorry not Missippi's
(21:20):
a ole miss And just watching that Lane Kiff and
team the other day, I know and I know I
know that they might have been looking ahead to Georgia.
I understand that Washington's quarterback is better. If Jonah Coleman's
a better running back and their dude's a stud, I
think that there's no doubt Washington has better receivers from
the freshmen to Boston all the way through. And defensively,
(21:42):
Washington State moved the ball on that Ole Miss team
and had some big plays which they didn't have explosives
against Washington. I don't know. I just I know it's
an SEC team, stoo, But I think Washington just is
so underrated, and I hate saying that. It makes me
sick stewart to my stomach, but I'm part of me.
We'll see what happens with with Georgia and Old Miss,
But I don't know. I just Washington scored when they
(22:05):
wanted to against Wazoo and Ole Miss did not, and
I'll just leave it at that.
Speaker 5 (22:09):
I'm it was a bizarre game, to say the least,
and it was hard to tell is I'll miss just
leaving that day or not. But I also got to say,
like Wazoo has been a confusing team. You know, a
lot of a lot of wild swings over the course
of the season, so I don't really, frankly know what
to make of any of that. I think if it
(22:31):
turns out Ole Miss as a frog, you'll find that
out this weekend.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
Well, listen, when you say, you know Wazoo is you know,
that's that's what we that's we call Wazoo football the
nutshell Stewart. I mean, just ask your friend Bruce Feldman.
He's been around it for a while too. It's that's
that's that's who we are. As Koop's all right, let
me get to Penn State. You guys talked about on
the pod the other day on the on the Audible podcast.
Did I mean the pressure obviously there is to get
(22:55):
over the top and to to make that next move
and to get you know, to to to get to
pass just a ten eleven win season, which I know
those have to be really hard for teams to suffer
through those ten eleven seasons, but obviously they had higher
aspirations this season. Now that you had a few days
to kind of percolate and simmer on a little bit,
some thoughts on Penn State getting rid of James Franklin.
Speaker 5 (23:17):
Yeah, the more days went by the more because at
the time you know, we got on the Audible Sunday
Mornings that he's done, like that's the end. But we
didn't mean the next morning, right. It actually happened right
after we got off the air, and so the timing
definitely caught me by surprise at that time. As the
days went on, I don't know that there was any
other way. I mean, if you, if you, there's a
(23:38):
video that went around Twitter of him walking off the
field that after that game and going into the tunnel,
and it was like he was being marched to the guillotine.
Like people stayed well after the game just to boo
him to his face.
Speaker 8 (23:51):
It was.
Speaker 5 (23:51):
It was nasty and that if that's where you are,
where your fan base is, just we're just disgusted with you,
Like we don't there's no point right riding out the season,
a huge buyout or not. I just think everybody, a
lot of people there had had mixed feelings about him
for some time. They appreciated that he rescued the program.
(24:11):
They appreciate waning ten eleven games a year, but when's
the next step coming? You know, we keep we keep
calling short in these games. And so everybody was all
in on this season. We got everybody coming back that
we've invested the money, we got Jim Knowles. The defense
courting are for three million dollars a year, and this happens,
and it's just like the ultimate letdown, and I just
(24:31):
think it reached a point of no return.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
Kurt Signetti from Indiana is a name that seems to
be near the top of the list. But you wrote
a story, a great one on the buyouts and what's
going on with that. But more importantly, there's timing issues
here too, and how challenging is that for Penn State
or if Florida gets to that point, which they probably will,
(24:56):
who knows what happens at LSU With Brian Kelly, we
just go down the list of these openings across the country. Uh,
what is what's the biggest challenge? Is it buyouts if
you want to bring a big guy in or is
it just like the timing because of a team's going
to the college football Playoff, you're going to be hard
pressed to get a guy before middle or end of January.
Speaker 5 (25:15):
Well, I mean, after what Penn State did forty nine
million dollars, I don't think buyouts will be I don't
think sans are going much sympathy now if your school
is not gonna fire Smith because of the buyout. The
timing though with the CFP is a new element to
the coaching carousel that we haven't seen before. It didn't
come up last year. But yeah, if you're if you
(25:36):
you know, if you're if Kurt Signetti has Indiana, not
just in the playoff, but you know, let's say top
four seeds, do they get a buy or they're winning
and their season goes into January, that probably just takes
them out of this cycle. And so does that mean
if you're the coach of a really good team you
can never get another job? Does that mean that the
schools that are making these hires do they need to
(25:59):
be willing to wait? Because what we've seen in recent
years is there's a mad dash to hire a coach
as soon as the season end, the regular season ends,
so they can be ready for the portal. You know,
I've seen you know, Bill Belichick say that they were
put behind. They were behind because they got hired two
days after the portal open. Are you willing to wait
till January? Because now, starting this year, the portal is
(26:21):
not opening until January second, with Penn State, that would
mean since you already fired your coach in October, going
two months without a permanent coach, So we'll see where
things are at the end of the year. You could
see though, if Indiana is eleven and one twelve and
oh like the fever pitch around her signetti is going
(26:41):
to be so high? Is a school willing to put
up with a month of social media rumors and you know,
just deafening noise around the program? And by the same token,
will the coach just say you got to take me
out of consideration, like we're trying to win a national championship.
I can't have this going on every day.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
He's fascinating, That program's fascinating, you guys talked about on
the Audible Just like this Mark Cuban or some other
alums step up and just pay him, and I mean
he'd have a lifetime contract there with what he's done
so far, and that's not even in two full seasons.
Or wrap it up with this Stuart Mandel joining his
athletic and the audible podcast usc Notre Dame. I wonder
if it was you or one of your your one
of the other guys said, whoever wins this game might
(27:21):
be a playoff team. Do you believe that?
Speaker 6 (27:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (27:24):
That was rou Okay, Well, he didn't say might, he
said whoever wins this game will be a playoff team.
I definitely think that's the case of Notre Dame because
their schedule is very soft after this one, and I
think that anybody who you know wrote them off after
those two losses, now you look back and say, well,
the two teams they lost to by one point and
three points are now.
Speaker 6 (27:43):
In the top five.
Speaker 5 (27:44):
They've been very good since then. If they handle a
USC like they're in really great shape to run the table.
You know, I'd like to see USC first. I don't.
I still don't trust Lincoln Riley in a game like this,
a big road game. If he pulls it off, then
suddenly what I think they're seiling this year could be
(28:05):
may well become playoffs.
Speaker 6 (28:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
For folks who don't like Notre Dame, it's USC. They
have a bye week and then they go Boston College, Navy, Pittsburgh,
Sarah Use Stanford. Now pitt coming off a big win,
but that's not a gauntlet by any stretch of the imagination,
and ten and two should be very much well in
reach for them. Stewart tell people about the audible podcast
it's fantastic. I'm a huge college football fan to listen
(28:28):
to it every week. I'm not just it because there's
multiple episodes, but tell people about it.
Speaker 5 (28:33):
The Audible with myself, Bruce Settiman and Ralph Russo comes
out every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, and the Sunday show
is live on YouTube at eight thirty am. Specific I
love it.
Speaker 1 (28:44):
You guys do a great job. We'll talk to you
next week. Thank you, Stewart, all right, thanks Ian, Stuart
Mandel joining us. Take a break. Daily power Play coming

Speaker 1 (29:23):
All right, real quick, Daily power play, cracking win last night,
Off Today, Back at it tomorrow, Ottawa three thirty pre game.
They are still unbeat in regulation. They have five out
of a possible six points so far this season. Six
game road trip continues Tomorrow three to thirty. Pre game
with Benton four o'clock drop of the puck with fits
and olt. We're squeezing bowl, hockey and baseball into this segments.
Let's get right to the baseball. Uh, pregame press conferences
(29:45):
taking place have taken place, have taken place already.
Speaker 6 (29:48):
Today.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
We want to hear a little bit from cal Rawley, who,
by the way, got screwed today. Uh the Gold Glove
finalists were announced. He was not one of the three.
Didn't allow a pass ball all year? Like, did he
regress defense? Was he worse? I know he didn't throw
out runners at as high rates a year ago, Right,
that was the only thing. Okay, I guess that's all.
We're just basing it on that.
Speaker 4 (30:08):
I don't know.
Speaker 9 (30:09):
He says there's something to do with the different strike zone,
and like all the framing and stuff.
Speaker 4 (30:13):
I don't know. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
Watch a game, somebody. Okay, how about cal Rawley meeting
with the media, including our own Mike ben CALLI here.
Speaker 10 (30:19):
About George the Big Game competitor and what he did,
you know three years ago in the ALDS. What he's
done now for this year, whether it's preparation or mentality,
what sticks out to you as far as the biggest difference.
Speaker 7 (30:31):
For him in big games like these. Yeah, I think
I think you've seen it a lot with a lot
of our guys that on the mound.
Speaker 11 (30:38):
You know, this seems like when the bright lights come on,
they're not shying away from from the spotlight.
Speaker 7 (30:42):
So you know, you know, you always feel if he
can look back to so many games.
Speaker 11 (30:48):
You look back to the the Astros game a couple
of years ago when George started that one. I believe
it was King Felix night we played the Orioles a
couple of years ago. He pitched a full nine innings
and we didn't get any runs. So but you know,
he went a full nine innings and was unbelievable with
the packed house that night.
Speaker 7 (31:07):
So you know, he he doesn't shy away from it.
Speaker 11 (31:09):
He he really you know, accepts that and takes the
challenge on and he uh he you know, kind of
busts through in a way and uses that you know,
adrenaline a focus to.
Speaker 7 (31:22):
Make a make a really good out and usually so
go to second roller.
Speaker 12 (31:27):
Cal Mitch said the other night that he was going
to say something, has he addressed the team or just
done it on an individual basis about the uh, the
situation he was in two years ago, going on the
road win the first two games and having to come
home and then losing the next three and then having
to go back out there, and just kind of keeping
that same mentality given that anything can happen in a
series like this.
Speaker 11 (31:45):
Yeah, I mean we we we understand. You know, obviously
we put ourselves on a good spot. But job's not finished.
And I think we've done a good job of that
so far this year. All the way starting back to
when we did clench. You know, we weren't weren't satisfied
with just making the playoffs. We wanted to to finish
this thing off and get the division. And then you know,
fast forward to the entire series. You know, just trying
(32:08):
to keep that focus and you know, whether we go
down or go up, you know, trying to keep the
same same level of consistency and focus. And you know,
like I said, we want to want to try to
finish this thing out here, and and uh, you know,
take care of business that way.
Speaker 7 (32:22):
You know, you know, we're not give him any kind
of room to breathe.
Speaker 1 (32:27):
Well they win tonight, there's no room to breathe. That's
that's as simple as it gets. And if you are.
If you are the Toronto Blue Jays, it's pretty simple.
You've got to win two of three in Seattle, like otherwise,
season alive. Keep your season alive, like seriously, like the
(32:50):
tall task. I know that there's stress and consternation here.
I know our guy that's coming on with me in
an hour talking to him cross talk is losing his mind.
Put yourself in Toronto shoes for a second. How do
you think they're feeling. If you're a Toronto Blue Jays fan,
how are they feeling? I'd much try to be where
we are really exact things tips, Yeah, really exactly, yeah, absolutely.
(33:15):
I mean both road teams in the ALCS NLCS stranglehold
on their series, Dodgers doing it last night in Milwaukee.
I mean, if you're a Brewers fan, you're like a bomber,
and you know what, I'm a petty individual. Screw them.
They take the pilots and I see way too much
(33:37):
and see end of the thing is is like they're
really going, They're really embracing the yellow and the gold,
the original mirrors and pilot's colors too.
Speaker 7 (33:45):
So screw them. Go Dodgers.
Speaker 1 (33:48):
All right, let's uh, let's do this take a break
come back. Mike Holmgren joins us. Coming up next no
from the Star.
Speaker 8 (33:57):

Why would it? Why would I have to tell you that?
MLCs Game two was last night in Milwaukee. Much like
(34:44):
the ALCS home team loses again, Dodgers win. They're up
two games to none. Series switches to Cheven for Game
three coming up tomorrow. Let's go, let's go. Ah all right,
Cracking lost in overtime last night to the Montreal Canadians abbatants.
Speaker 4 (35:02):
Not all losses are equaling.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
Not all losses are equal. Anders you know why you
still get a point forgetting to overtime. Both teams secure
to point. Cold Kawfield scored three minutes in gets the
extra point. Four. Montreal overtime loss not really a loss
when you get a point two h to one the cracking.
I've yet to lose in regulation five out of possible
six points so far the season. It's a different hockey team, people,
I'm telling you right now, they're different. You said the
(35:24):
same thing, Anders, right, Yes, that's different hockey team.
Speaker 4 (35:26):
Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
Uh More importantly, we want to give away some tickets
for Game four tomorrow. Tomorrow. The sun will come out tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (35:35):
It might be the best giveaway that we've done since
I've been.

Speaker 6 (36:45):
I'm doing great. I gotta say something before we kick on.
Speaker 1 (36:48):
Fire away, fire away.
Speaker 6 (36:50):
No, yeah, I mean normally, you know, you lift my
spirits and you are on fire and you're going all
the time. But I will I will say this in
that the last couple of minutes you're looking, you're this
is good stuff happening in Seattle right now in sports.
Speaker 1 (37:05):
Very very good, right, very good stuff, very good stuff.
Speaker 6 (37:08):
I know, it's I mean, I'm happy for everybody, and
let's go Mariners. Let's go love it.
Speaker 1 (37:15):
Mike I I our guy, Chris Crawford. We do think
call my what Monday on Mondays. I know you're a
regular listener, but for those who might have missed it,
he brought up a great point. You know, this is
the cool thing about sports is it just brings a town, community,
region together, you know, like and you can kind of
forget about some of the other differences you may have
along the way. You know, I go back, you know,
(37:37):
we had that, you know, way back when in seventy
nine with the Sonics winning a title. The Sonics didn't
win in ninety six, but what they did for the
city and all the fun that people had with the
ninety six Sonics going to the NBA Finals was special.
The ninety five Mariners, you know what you guys did
in five getting to the Super Bowl for the very
first time. I'll just ask you this, I know, and
(38:00):
sometimes we kind of mess around and Josh Brown and
have some fun. The loss would sucked for everybody I
mean nobody more so than you and the players. But
force the Seahawks to get there for the first time
in five And I bring that up because the Mariners
have never been to the World Series. Getting just cracking
through and getting to the finals, championship game, championship Series.
(38:24):
How satisfying would that be? Do you think for the
Mariner's front office, players and coaches. I know they want
to win it all and you get there and it hurts,
probably wor worse than anything. You'll tell me if you
lose when you're that close, but just if you've never
been there before, Like the Sonics had won it in
seventy nine, so when Carl and those guys got it
back George Carl and ninety six, they had already been there.
(38:44):
You guys had this Seahawks team had never been there.
I just remember how how excited I was, how proud
I was a Seahawks fan. I was living in Portland, Mike.
It was the best thing ever. You guys got there.
It didn't end that way how we wanted. But how
important is it is just to get there?
Speaker 5 (38:58):
Well?
Speaker 6 (38:58):
I think it means a lot. I mean I really do.
And you're right when I and you and I have
talked about this before that if you lose it, it's hard.
It's hard, and it's six with you a long time,
and I still have I still think about it every
once in a while. But to get there and what
the players have done, and if you do it for
the first time, you know, I just couldn't have been
(39:20):
more proud. And I get emotional when I think about it.
I mean, it was a special time, and I I
you know, I hope they go all the way, but
if it's something happens and they can't get it done
this time, they're going to do it again. And and
that's what happened to the Seahawks obviously.
Speaker 1 (39:35):
Yeah, I mean for you guys, I'll go back. I
mean even Green Bay. You know when you guys got
there and won it in Green Bay and went back again.
I think it's it was different because it had been Mike,
how long had it been since Lombardi and those guys
did it?
Speaker 9 (39:49):
It?
Speaker 1 (39:49):
Like a long time?
Speaker 6 (39:50):
Yeah, I've been twenty. It had been a long time. Yeah,
it had been a long time. And they talked a
lot about that, and and it was it was special,
But that made it even more so because we finally
got there, and then uh, you know, the celebration afterwards,
and it's hard to describe quite honestly, but it's the players,
and you love him, you hug him a lot of tears.
(40:12):
It's it's just now the champagne. The thing is football
never had any champagne.
Speaker 4 (40:16):
I know.
Speaker 6 (40:17):
That's what you know.
Speaker 1 (40:19):
Hockey campaign, No, they do when they win it all
like they do. Yeah, I don't get baseball, Mike. I'm
the same this this you and I can share being
you know, old men yelling at clouds. For a second,
I don't get I don't you clinch a wild card spot,
you party like you want a title, you clinch a division,
You party like to win to tiele, you win one
division series.
Speaker 7 (40:38):
The same thing.
Speaker 1 (40:39):
I don't quite get that. But hey, you know what
you guys do you baseball? That's fine. I don't think
it's that way in any other sport.
Speaker 6 (40:46):
No. And then in Green Bay, you know the fellow
who was in charge of finances when I first got there,
you know, he was a very very frugal, and so
we were going to do champagne and we were going
to do maybe diet seven up. I don't know, but
That's when he gave me the Reharse cell phone out
in the parking lot and he goes, you know, I
want it back when you get fired. I go, okay, thanks, yeah,
(41:08):
thank you. My.
Speaker 1 (41:10):
How things have changed in the NFL, man, Yeah, I mean,
oh gee, they give intern cell phones now probably, so,
I mean much less a head coach and all that. Listen,
you were in you were in Wisconsin. You guys, there
was at least beer somewhere to be seen. Wasn't there
for a celebration?
Speaker 6 (41:29):
Oh? There was. There was going to be That's Kurds
and Chilie John's. Yeah, there's going to be some real
healthy stuff, really real healthy good stuff.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
Well, I'm gonn tell you right now the best thing
about Lamba is cheese Kurds at halftime in the press box.
That right now. I don't know if you had anything
to do with that when you first got there, but
I'll tell you right now, that's the best thing about
going to Lambo as a media guy.
Speaker 6 (41:49):
So pretty good. Lambo's. Lambo is quite a place.
Speaker 1 (41:51):
It is, Mike, before we get to football if and
you know, I know you've talked to John over the years,
and still some other people in the Seahawks organization and
so forth. You talked, you know, Andy Reid's people don't
know any reads one of your closest friends, and you
have conversations. Dan Wilson's in this thing for the first
time as a Mariner's manager. Different sport, but same thing.
You're trying to lead your team to the title. What
would you tell him? What would be the advice you
(42:13):
would give him or any other person in that position.
Speaker 6 (42:16):
I would just say, you know what, just enjoy every minute,
every minute, because you know, there's a lot of stress
on the manager obviously, and the coach, and and I
used to tell the players that too. You know, when
you walk out on the field before the kickoff or
we get there early in the stadium, and look around,
breathe it in, look to where your your your family's
(42:39):
going to be sitting in the stands, and just think
what got you here and how hard you've worked and
all that kind of stuff. Just enjoy the moment. And
you know, that's easier for me to say now, but
I really wanted them to do that because it's it's
you're going it's hard, but it's like nothing you've ever
(42:59):
been through before. So now's the time to really soak
it in.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
I'm glad you use that phrase because I think even
even from a fans standpoint, maybe just because I'm a
little older now that you know, I'm kind of the
same way. Like, it's just kind of enjoying. Try to
enjoy the ride because you know, Sonics going ninety six,
they don't go back to the finals. You know, you
guys went No. Five, and you know, I thought, I
think we all thought, hey, this is the start, right Like,
Mike built this thing up, and it's hard to get
(43:24):
to a title. It didn't happen when those guys wanted here.
When Pete and those guys won it in twenty twelve
or twenty thirteen, I should say, they say, hey, this
is the start of a whole bunch in a row.
Well we know what happened the next year, and they
haven't been back since, right, Like, it's just getting to
that just to the cusp. You have to enjoy it,
and you have to be proud of what you've done.
I mean, I think to me, sales in the World Series,
(43:45):
they are up two games and none and they got
games at home now. But whatever happens, man, enjoy the
ride because it's it's you don't know when it's going
to happen again.
Speaker 6 (43:52):
Right, That's exactly right. And then you know, no one,
I guess if you're if you're Dan, you don't want
to hear that necessarily, but I hope he does. And
you know, it's you know, he's been in baseball a
long time, so he knows how hard it is to
get there and how you have to earn it. And
then once you if you are fortunate enough to win
(44:13):
one of those games, then that's, uh, you might not
get it another chance. Because you look at his historically
in the NFL prior to lets see the Patriots and
and now what and he's doing in Kansas City. It's hard.
It was hard to repeat. It was really hard. Teams
didn't you know. The Bears did not repeat. Teams did
(44:33):
not repeat. Because the second year we were fortunate to
go back. It's two years in row in Green Bay,
and uh, you know, and I thought we had a
really good chance to repeat, but it didn't happen. So
if you can get there, please enjoy it.
Speaker 1 (44:48):
Mike Hongrid joining us, what do you make of this
year's NFL? Mike, and I say that from this standpoint,
I'm looking at the AFC. Indianapolis Pittsburgh are both one
loss teams five and one, four and one. We all
know who Pittsburgh gloss to would be team out here.
Andy's team Kansas City is three and three, Baltimore is
one and five this year, Yeah, it's crazy. In the NFC,
(45:14):
Tampa Bay's five and one, they should be four and two,
but Seattle lost that game. We talked about it last week.
Green Bay is a weird three to one and one
had to hold on to beat Cincinnati. San Francisco, a
paper tiger at four and two with all their injuries.
He kind of dropped down Minnesota playoff team last year
out of it right now, Chicago, all these Washington with
Dan or three and three? Is it just the year
(45:36):
of injuries and so we have more parody and stranger
things happening.
Speaker 6 (45:40):
I think that's one of the big things this year.
In fact, that's a conversation around our house a lot
with my daughters and my wife that our kids are
the guys getting hurt more than when you coached. And
I would say it seems like it does. Does it
does you take a team like the forty nine ers
or you know, Balton more good good football teams on paper.
(46:02):
I mean they got it and their their preseason picks
and all that, and then guys get hurt, Key, guys
get hurt, and and then it changes it changes out everything,
And so, uh, why why it's happening? Is it more happening?
Is because they don't practice? I don't know. And I
have theories, you know, and conspiracy theories about how they
practice and the preseason get ready and how they don't play,
(46:25):
how they don't play guys you know in the preseason.
Does that have anything to do with it? I don't know,
but you know it it is different. And I think
that's that's kind of been target that this year. That's
what's happened, and the teams that used we weren't wrong
saying this team has a good chance to do this,
and then all of a sudden, what's what's happened? Well,
(46:46):
injuries have happened.
Speaker 1 (46:48):
Michael Ngrid joining us. What do you make of Seattle
last week? They get lit up defensively the week before
by Tampa Bay. Now, obviously you know we talked about it.
Trevor Lawrence isn't isn't what Baker is right? Now, but
that defense back in a big way, didn't they.
Speaker 6 (47:02):
They really did, particularly the guy's up front. I mean,
when you think if I've been going into a game
and I'm going in and three of the starters on defense,
three of the guys are in the secondary, aren't starting,
I'm looking at my chops, I just think, Okay, we're
going to throw the ball and we're going to score
some points. Well, they were not able to do that.
So give credit to the young guys who were substituted
(47:23):
in there, but also you got to give credit to
the to the defensive line. Putting pressure on Trevor Lawrence.
Having said that when I watched that game and I
hadn't seen him play very much, Yeah, Trevor Lawrence, that
I was, I'd come away thinking, I'm not sure, you know,
I didn't. He held the ball too long, in my opinion, often,
(47:46):
and then he missed some throws. He made some. Then
all of a sudden, he makes a couple of beautiful throws,
but pretty inconsistent, and no one expected them to get
off to a four and one start though, so good
for them, but he's got to play better.
Speaker 1 (48:00):
You'll find this hard to believe. Our friend Hugh Millen
broke down every sack by the Seahawks, and how long
Trevor Lawrence held the ball for those sacks?
Speaker 6 (48:07):
Did every time? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (48:09):
Are you surprised by that?
Speaker 6 (48:11):
Yeah? No, of course I am. You know he doesn't
he doesn't look at it that way.
Speaker 1 (48:15):
But but but what you said was true. And he
broke up at the first play was six and a
half seconds, Hugh told us. And and then Murphy got
the sack. And I mean most of the sacks were
in the three you know, the three four second range
or more as he broke it down. And you know,
we've talked about what did you tell your quarterbacks back
in the day, how long do they have to throw
the football?
Speaker 8 (48:35):
No?
Speaker 6 (48:35):
You well, you get into a rhythm and you go
a three step, five step, four step throw, step throw,
itch throw. That's how you do it. If you're holding
the ball after that, dump it, dump it because the
good guys on defense are going to get to you.
And you know what we're I'm watching the game and
I've got the feeling I didn't time it out like
you did. But and who does I mean, he's unbelievable, yes,
(48:58):
but you know it. That's what happened, and that's what
you saw that, you know, and it played right into
a good defensive rush hands and it made the difference
in the game.
Speaker 1 (49:12):
Sam Darnold has another really strong game, Mike. And then
I'll tell you my favorite play at the end. And
I guess this is probably where you give the offensive
coordinator credit, right that they need to get a first
down and probably a couple first downs, and to put
this thing away, you're up by eight at that point.
But the pass to a J. Barner, the tight end,
the long pass at the end, I mean, who gets
(49:34):
I mean Sam made the throw, Barner made the cash.
But that's that's a Klint Kubiak call, isn't it is
that who we give credit to you there?
Speaker 6 (49:41):
Absolutely absolutely, because you go into that situation and you're
with the timing and where they were on the field,
and you're thinking about that because you know, if you
can get a couple of first downs or a first
down the game, you got the game. But it surprised
me because they're been kind of conservative at times my opinion.
But they came out and they play action pass beautiful, beautiful,
(50:05):
And I wrote down on the seat as I was
making my notes I said, best player of the game,
just really really special, and you know, I'd love to
see it, and I hope they do it more.
Speaker 1 (50:14):
Well, what is it what we talk about him? Every week?
We'll talk about him again. What's what's really jumping out
at you about Sam Donald? Anders asked me a question?
What was the question you asked me?
Speaker 9 (50:24):
So I asked, how many quarterbacks could you put in
Sam Donald's shoes and get the same or better results?
Speaker 1 (50:31):
I said, maybe, I don't know, Mike, maybe like four
or five guys in the league. I mean, I think
he's playing that high of a level right now.
Speaker 6 (50:36):
Oh, I would agree with you. I think, you know,
he's showing he can really pass the ball. I mean,
he can really throw the ball, and he shows good judgment.
He's throwing on time. He's not making a ton of mistakes,
you know, so his processing after the snap of the
ball and then his drop and that's that's coaching. That's
a lot of things. But he is doing no he's
I'm glad we have him. And I said this at
(50:58):
the beginning, and I'll take all the credit for it
in the world that I said he's going to be great.
And so you know, I was very rarely wrong, and
anything that I came up with correct. So I think
I think I'm pretty good on this one.
Speaker 1 (51:12):
Well, I think, in all due respect, I think of
all the people we talked to, you do want to
know a little bit about the playoff quarterbacks in the NFL.
I just I there's you have you have. I think
the thing that presses me most, and I talk about
this with you a lot, is the the average passing.
Like his average pass length completion number one in the league.
Has average pass length is number one in the league.
(51:33):
His average gain is number one in the league. He's
number three in yards so far this year. I mean, like,
like they're driving the ball down the field little bit.
I'd like to see it, Like I like to see
Tory Horton get the ball a little bit more and
spread it out because jas N's having a great year.
But I mean I'm quibbling probably right if I say, hey,
I want to see other guys get the ball more.
But I mean they're they're putting the ball down the
(51:53):
field for not Isn't this offense designed to kind of
be a little bit more run based, dink and dunk
and stuff.
Speaker 6 (51:59):
Yeah, I think so, And I think yes, But and
but I'm with you, I'd like to see him spread
it around a little bit more because I think eventually
or I would think that teams, you know, start to say, well, listen,
this guy jigma Is is their guy. We've got to
if nothing else, we're clamping down on him. When that happens,
(52:20):
they have to be ready to go a different direction
because there will be games where it happens. But you know,
you have to you have to give credit to Clint Shubiac.
I mean, but at the same time, they want to
run the ball, and you know, you know they do.
They talk about it a lot, and they it'll make
me even that much better. But right now, credit credit
(52:42):
what they're doing in the passing game. I like it.
Speaker 1 (52:45):
The Monday night is this week. I know you probably
were more fond of Monday as opposed to Thursday night
games along the way they take they take Tuesday Wednesday off.
How important is it just to get those two days
off if you know, in the middle of the season, say,
it's huge.
Speaker 6 (53:01):
You know, you get you get a little bit tired
as you get going towards the middle of the season,
and then you really have to change your practice plans.
You have to do some stuff that's a little different,
just to make sure that everyone catches their breath just
a little bit and can play on Sunday. But to
have a little bit of extra time, I think it
means a lot. And so you know, the way they're
going right now, they're playing a lot of close ballgames, yes,
(53:23):
and and so to have a little extra stamina, a
little extra spark, you know, means all the world to
a team. So I hope they can keep it going.
Speaker 1 (53:32):
I didn't think about that. That's great for the players
physically and stuff, all those close games. How good is
it for the coaches, the staff, not just Mike, just
to take a mental health break for a day or two,
because that's got to be taxing playing all these one
score games, one possession games.
Speaker 6 (53:49):
Yeah, really, I mean it's just it's it's it's hard.
It's hard, and you have to really kind of suck
it up and you keep going and you go. But
the fact that they were able to emerge victorious, you know,
it says so much and means so much that you
know they should you can feel real good about what's happening.
(54:12):
The Seahawks fans can feel real good about what's happening
with that football team right now.
Speaker 1 (54:15):
I love it, Mike, have a great week, I think
Softy tomorrow and then we'll check in with you next
week after Monday and football, my friend.
Speaker 6 (54:21):
Thank you so much, but take it easy.
Speaker 1 (54:23):
That is Mike Combrian love having him on every week.
We're so lucky to have him on every Wednesday at
two o'clock on this particular show all throughout the station
as well, with Softy and Chuck and Bucky as well.
We got a little factor of fiction coming up here
at two thirty five. We'll check the text line as well.
Coming up next.
Speaker 8 (54:44):
From the R and R Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio. Now
back to Ian Fernez, powered by Seattle's Closest sports book
Snow call me Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio ninety
three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 1 (55:04):
All right, let me give you a couple of little
reminders here. We'll get to a couple of texts in
a second. Well, no Crosstock, they have Softy. They're getting
things ready to go for their Mariners Game three pregame
show alcspot. If I still call me Casino sales closest,
still call me Casino and hotel that's coming up at
three o'clock three to five, taking up to Game Time
Sports Radio ninety three point three. KJRS partner with venue
Kings dot com to give you a chance to win
(55:25):
a pair of tickets to Thursday's game. To enter, simply
reply to the KJR tweet with the current get in
price for Game three the World Series from Venue Kings
dot com and tag two friends who might also want
to enter. Then tune in on Thursday one to see
if your name is announced. Ient it is, you'll have
five minutes to call back and claim your tickets. So
we tweeted it out yesterday, retweeted it today from the
(55:46):
KJR account x dot com. I did it online my
massive massive following on Twitter, huge, huge, enormous massive, So
just go find it somewhere. If you're not on Twitter,
then I can't help you. Listen.
Speaker 9 (56:00):
I know, ex Twitter, whatever we call it is not
for everybody. But we do these all the time. Like
maybe you're not a text in guy. We do text
contest sometimes we have call contests in all a different way.
Speaker 1 (56:09):
And I'll point out again we're giving away tickets to
a possible clinching game four of the alcs last I
checked that has never happened to marin our history, had
a clinching game for win or ability to win and
(56:30):
go to the World Series, because you know what, they
never have been correct. So check that out a venue
Kings dot com, by the way, for your tickets for
and listen. Don't be the guy that complains about people
coming down here from Toronto and Vancouver, Calgary or wherever else.
They may roll it in from Gary, Seashelt, Burnaby, New
(56:54):
Westminster doesn't matter, Airdrie, Alberta, doesn't. Just whatever town am
I be in Canada. They're rolling in here and you're complaining.
Are you buying tickets? Did you sell your tickets? You
bought tickets, then maybe you can complain. But come on,
it will be we'll get to we'll get to texts
next segment four nine, four to five one. By the way,
(57:15):
we've got a bunch today. We'll get to those in
the next segment. It will be interesting anders the atmosphere tonight.
I think if you missed our interview earlier with far
Han Lolgy from to this end way really fun. Who
is a Canadian working for a Canadian sports network and
then says I'm not a Blue Jays fan, and I'm
not afraid to admit it. He's a Marrier's fan, he's
(57:35):
a Marritors fan, and a Huskies fan and a Seahawks fan.
Speaker 6 (57:37):
Love it.
Speaker 1 (57:38):
But and as he said, not all Canadians. Don't paint
them all with a broadbrush. They're not all Blue Jays fans,
but there are a lot of them up there, no
doubt about it. What will that atmosphere be like tonight?
Will we hear the Blue Jays fans? That's the question,
Will we hear them? It won't be. I don't think
there's any chance it'll be like it was like a
(57:59):
regular season game. If for no other reasons, say there's
like thirty thirty five thousand, like this place will be full,
so you're can to add another ten thousand class matter
of fans, right right.
Speaker 4 (58:08):
Hopefully that's the idea.
Speaker 9 (58:10):
But I just think in general, and I don't know
how representative this is for the rest of the city.
But I've had like, my parents are going to their
first playoff game that they've ever been to on Friday.
I've had two different friends text me and be like.
Speaker 4 (58:24):
Dude, I'm going to the game Wednesday. I'm going to
the game Thursday.
Speaker 9 (58:27):
I put it all into one pair of tickets or
whatever it is, and I just hope that that's kind
of the vibe of the rest of the kind of
sports fans here in Seattle, that you realize that this
is a once in a lifetime opportunity and you're taking
advantage of it. Now. I realized that might be the
case for people who live in Vancouver who happened to
be Blue Jays fans as well. This is I don't
(58:48):
want to say just as rare because they've done it
in the last thirty years, but it's still.
Speaker 1 (58:54):
They have them be into the World Series since twenty three, right,
so it's yeah, that's that's not as long as forty
nine years and they have been there and won it.
But it I mean, you think about that ninety three
were you alive?
Speaker 4 (59:08):
No, no, no, I was four years from being alive.
Speaker 1 (59:10):
I mean that's that's three decades ago. Yes, So it's
you know, they're kind of thirsty four as much as
we are, not as much as we are, but they're still.
Here's the thing, they have a portion of their fan
base that's every bit as as thirsty for this. Yes,
as a portion of our fan base because there's a
portion of our fan base it's only suffered for thirty
(59:30):
thirty years or less, not forty nine like me and
Softy others, So it is a little bit different. But
I think the atmosphere will be great tonight. For no
other reason, the Marina fans are insane. I heard Carl
Ravitch talking on the ESPN broadcast. On the ESPN radio
broadcast of today, Carl Rabbitch is just effusive in his
praise for what this place is like and how loud
it is, and said it's allowed as stadium in baseball
(59:52):
right now, which is pretty cool. So take pride in that,
Marina fans. All right, let's get to it. Factor Fiction.
Speaker 6 (59:57):
Where's that to go?
Speaker 4 (59:58):
Glad you're with us?
Speaker 8 (59:59):
It's your shut, our weekly thousand bucks and the ten
thousand dollars grand prize. It's Factor Fiction, probably presented by
Lucky Eagle Casino in Hotel where every day feels lucky.
Fact Door Fiction is on Sports Radio ninety three point
three kJ R FM.
Speaker 1 (01:00:20):
By the way, no pick for us tomorrow, no pick
for Softy tomorrow because we have early cracking game, so
I have we have two picks left this week. All right,
I'm going college football, and I'm putting my money more
than my mouth is. You heard Suart Mandel earlier. By
the way, we're playing factor fiction. You text fact if
you agree with the pick. You text fiction if you
just agree with the pick four nine, four to five one.
While I'll tell you in a second money where my
(01:00:43):
mouth is.
Speaker 4 (01:00:48):
I like to pick? Do you like to pick? I
do I really do?
Speaker 1 (01:00:51):
I am going with Georgia minus seven and a half
over Ole Miss. Georgia minus seven and a half over
Ole Miss?
Speaker 4 (01:01:06):
Why Ian?
Speaker 1 (01:01:08):
Because I think Old Miss isn't very good and I
don't buy the we're looking ahead nonsense. What I saw
last week with Ole Miss? I heard all about the
big bad sec. This is where the big boys play.
It means a lot more to everybody else. Blah blah blah,
it means more. First of all, stadium wasn't full, which
(01:01:30):
I thought was interesting, means more. Except for Oxford number two,
Wazoo was not physically outmatched. Overall. They hung with those
guys that now zebi at coals great great, I mean
he's an equal wizer. He played really well. But when
(01:01:50):
I watched Washington and Washington State play I felt like
our team was over at SKIS. I felt like my
school was physically just kind of at times dominated. Now
it was close for a while till the fourth quarter,
but when Washington wanted to hit the gas pedal, they did,
and I don't think they punted all day. When I
(01:02:11):
watched Old Miss on Saturday, their quarterback play isn't as
good as Washington's quarterback plan. I'm bringing up Washington. I
know they're not part of my pick, but I just
saw a Washington team that I think is better than
Old Miss. I think Oregon, despite his lost to Indiana's
better than Old Miss. I think Indiana's better than Old Miss.
I think Ole Miss is a paper tiger at number
(01:02:32):
five in the country. They beat Georgia last year, but
this year it's in Athens. It's not in Oxford. And
Kirby Smartin ain't losing the lane kiff in two years
in a row. No, it didn't happen. Now, I know
this spreads a little bit bigger than I like seven
and a half would have loved six and a half
would have loved that, and it was earlier that's gone up.
But I'll take it all day and every day. Man
(01:02:53):
I'm taking it all day and every day. Georgia minus
seven and a half over Ole Miss, paper time, overrated,
not as good as not as good as their ranking,
just not. They don't even know who their quarterback is
Trinidad Shambliss. Come on, man, that guy can't throw a
deep ball to save his life. Got to help an arm.
(01:03:15):
Just not accurate. He's like the high school kid that
could just check it fifty five yards in the air,
but nothing was accurate. Sometimes a guy might run into
under it, sometimes they won't. Yeah, I'm all over Georgia. Georgia. Also,
now this is an interesting one. George's got more pressure
on this in this game than they do, ye because
George has already got a conference loss last I checked. Yeah,
(01:03:38):
there are things called standings that kind of matter, and
even if you're the SEC, you don't want to pick
up that second conference loss if you're Georgia.
Speaker 4 (01:03:46):
That's why I almost like this pick more. Yeah, they
kind of need it more.
Speaker 1 (01:03:49):
They do need it more. Ole Miss is three and
oz one conference. George is three and one. Ole Miss
undefeated at six in all on the season. Wazoo very
easily could have beat them. I don't know. About our
play calling at the end, I'm running old voar, he's
up the middle when you just need to get down
field forty yards and get a field goal attempt. I
(01:04:09):
didn't quite understand that. But yeah, man, I their LSU
win was impressive of twenty four to nineteen. Outside of that,
they ain't beat nobody, including US. Georgia wins and they
win going away.
Speaker 10 (01:04:25):
I like it.
Speaker 1 (01:04:26):
They win going away.
Speaker 4 (01:04:27):
I like this pick.
Speaker 1 (01:04:28):
Plus, I just don't like Lane Kiffin. I'll be honest
with you. Part of me is part of it's that
it's another heart one ian. Yeah, but I watched the
team play. Yeah, I watched that thing start to finish,
and I'll just go through Ohio State. From what I've
seen this year. Hell, I'm not so sure Maryland wouldn't
give them a hell of a game too. They should
(01:04:50):
have beat Washington and they've kind of lost that one.
At the end, Marcus in two US six says, darn it.
Speaker 9 (01:04:54):
I agree, but already answered because I thought I'd missed
the pick, like just automatically sending it in.
Speaker 4 (01:04:59):
That means they're I'm doing fiction without even hearing you're
picking in.
Speaker 1 (01:05:02):
Well, they might be looking at standings and frankly, frankly,
I can't blame him for that. You're trying to win
a thousand dollars week we prize ten thousand dollars Grand
prize Factor fiction text fact. If you agree Georgia at
home minus seven and a half over ole miss fact.
If you disagree fiction four nine four to five one,
it's a big number. I get it. Come on, Bulldogs,
(01:05:24):
Come on, bulldogs, Come on, Kirby. I'm done with that
commercial bye. I know that's the reason I shouldn't have
picked them. Oh, Georgia, get some new commercials. All right,
that's our pick for Factor fiction four nine four or
five one text in right now? All right, take a break,
cup back. We'll check the text line next. All right,
(01:06:00):
there are a couple of texts four nine four five
one on the still unrestricted free agent text five two
five three, and I'll have you read a couple who
Anderson two f three I and your Canadian guest earlier
was spot on all the Vancouver sports fans at root
for the Seahawks. In turn around root for the blue Jays,
in said the Mariners taking there's some allegiance to Toronto
sports are regional. Is that we've always said.
Speaker 7 (01:06:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:06:18):
I mean, I think what far Han said earlier is
he thinks maybe a fifty to fifty split in Blue
Jay fans and NBC. So yeah, I think he's probably right.
What do you got You said you liked one or two?
Speaker 10 (01:06:29):
Uh?
Speaker 9 (01:06:29):
Well, John right under that in the three six oh,
the commercials could always be worse. He and me and
sewe are on green bikes in downtown.
Speaker 1 (01:06:36):
Wait, that's not a commercial. That's a promo for our
good friends at iHeart Radio and the Sarah Spain podcast
and everyone loves and the doors so very much.
Speaker 9 (01:06:48):
For T five, Oh Miss clearly overlooked wase going to
that Georgia game camp bet on prisoner at the moment,
oh Miss covers and beats Georgia.
Speaker 1 (01:06:55):
Okay, the overlooking part lasts for a quarter or two halftime.
You came out were no better, and Lane lit into him.
By all accounts, Yeah, here's a thing. I'm I'm just
gonna I'm gonna go through again what I saw again
(01:07:18):
with my own eyes, and I'm I use Washington as
a comparison. I think Washington is woefully underrated. I think
Washington's quarterback is far superior. I think Washington's running back
is a little bit better. They're running back to stud Yeah.
The receivers, it ain't close. Stribblings. Their best receiver former
(01:07:38):
Wazoo guy. He's okay, He ain't Denzel Boston, Nope, okay.
And Washington's the freshman kid. The receiver for Washington. The
freshman is a beast. Offensive line for Washington's better than
Old Misses. I'm just using NASA conperison, and I think
defense is probably comparable. So I'm telling you, if you're
telling if I'm when I'm telling, use this. I don't
(01:08:00):
think Washington. I think Washington is just as good, if
not better than all miss and Washington had their way
with our team. I hate that makes me ill to
say that, but it happened. Yeah, I saw it my
own eyes, both away from home. So since there's no
home road or anything like that, I just I think
that you can just I'm gonna tell you, I think
Kirby's gonna lay it. And they lost last year. You
think Kirby hadn't forgot has forgot about that. I think
(01:08:21):
he's a little sick about hearing about Old miss down Athens. Now,
there's a lot of people to think that Georgia is
what it used to be. I would agree, because of
Anil there's a little more parody than there used to
be in college football, right, Okay? And I don't think
or I don't think Georgia upgraded at quarterback. But what
George is gonna smack them?
Speaker 5 (01:08:40):
All?
Speaker 8 (01:08:40):
Right?
Speaker 1 (01:08:40):
What else?
Speaker 4 (01:08:41):
Get three to six?
Speaker 6 (01:08:42):
Oh?
Speaker 9 (01:08:42):
I just bought two nine hundred dollars tickets yesterday to
see Game four. This is historic and I've been waiting
on this since the fifth grade. Let's ef fing go.
Thanks for the pep talk yesterday. Softy, don't go. Don't
not go for money or anything else. Find a way
to go, or you'll regret it for your life. If
you love the Mariners like me, show the f up
today and tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (01:09:05):
Okay, I mean it's easier said than done, right, I mean,
I'm as I'll throw it back at you. You have
a child on the way I do. Could you go
spend nine hundred dollars in tickets?
Speaker 9 (01:09:14):
Probably not, But I'm also lucky enough to you're going
work your work in the situation that I'm in.
Speaker 4 (01:09:20):
Yes, yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:09:21):
You know, what's an interesting debate or what not?
Speaker 7 (01:09:24):
Debate?
Speaker 1 (01:09:24):
An interesting question. I'm never going to tell me a
how to spend their money now, And I always think like,
it's like, what's your drop dead number? Right, yeah, I
put your cut off. And I think for a lot
of us in our business, we just we're kind of spoiled.
We get paid for granted. Yeah, yeah, So you don't
really pay for tickets all that often.
Speaker 7 (01:09:43):
I don't know what.
Speaker 1 (01:09:44):
I don't know what mys something like this.
Speaker 9 (01:09:46):
As big of a Mariner fan as I am, i'd
drop five hundred on take I would two o six.
I'm a bartender, and I picked up four after hour
shifts so I could pay for a single ticket to
go to the game tomorrow. Regard wardless of the outcome,
It'll be worth every penny.
Speaker 1 (01:10:02):
I'll say this. One of the things that I just
always truly hated about, well the si zillion things. This
is too long politicians in our city, in our area,
is when people would just say, oh, you know, there's
no economic impact and blah blah blah and all this.
So if you're a bartender or you're a server at
any of the establishments down in Soto right now, you're
(01:10:23):
loving it. This is the greatest thing ever man, I
mean it is just I mean, we've had these bonus
baseball games and it's not a bonus baseball game where
there's fifteen thousand people. Yeah, and even last even the
last few nights, I mean, there's been a number of
bars in Seattle having viewing parties. People are making money.
It's good for the economy, it's good for the soul,
(01:10:44):
it's good for everything.
Speaker 4 (01:10:45):
Yeah, and it's keep it going. And you mentioned this.
I don't remember when it was.
Speaker 9 (01:10:48):
It might have been earlier this week, but having downtown
be as active as it was during the Low's last
couple games of the Alds, you know, it's not perfect,
but it kind of is like, Okay, this.
Speaker 1 (01:11:01):
Is like when I walked out, when I walked out
of game two of the Alcs it Alds Alds, it
felt like it felt good. I felt like, you know,
I felt good about being downtown walking around. It just
felt good. And we haven't said that about our city
in a long time. So it was good. Yeah, we'll
(01:11:22):
get him tonight, clincher. It will be tomorrow, mark my word.
Clinch clinching game will be too morol. I think they
get it done tonight. Huh, who's pitching George Kirby. What's
his record so far in the postseason? It's technically zero
and zero. What's his what are his numbers?
Speaker 4 (01:11:38):
Very good?
Speaker 1 (01:11:39):
Like crazy elite?
Speaker 6 (01:11:40):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (01:11:40):
Right, Yes? Do I think that they're going to have
a chance to clinch tomorrow? Yes, I know they're going
to have a chance to clinch tomorrow. Come on, boy,
I don't think I know that's a fact. Four nine,
four or five one mirrors win fact four nine, four
or five one. Softy has Rick Riz, God, he's coming up.
That'snna be great coming up next year. For the mild
(01:12:01):
mannered and marginally objectionable Inverness, this is Paddled Day saying
so long everyone,
