Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now from the Star Rentals Sports to Jordan. Ninety three
point three KJRFMS sports.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Headlines headlines brought to you by Frost Brewed cors Light.
Choose Chill Seahawks in a bye this week, getting ready
for their next matchup, which is Sunday Night football in
Washington against the Commanders and dan Quinn next week five
o'clock tonight, Monday Night Football, Commanders in Chiefs right here
in ninety three point three kjr FM Husky's and Cougar's
Football both winners over the weekend. Husky is against number
twenty three Illinois forty two to twenty five. Washington State
(00:28):
knocked off Toledo, allegedly the best team in the mac
back attack. In that game, Sounders take on Minnesota tonight,
first round of the MLS Playoffs. It's on the road
in Minneapolis or Saint Paul, one of the two Twin
cities because it's in wait for Minnesota. Nine to fifty.
Kjr AM pregame with Jackson Felt six o'clock as a
(00:49):
six o'clock kickoff five thirty. Pre game, LSU athletic director
former Husky athletic director Scott Woodard anounced that he's fired
head coach Brian Kelly fifty four million dollars or so
in Buyout Money World Series tonight, HM series is even
one piece they played tonight. I just hesitate to even
bring it up. All right, let's go all right. So
I need you, guys, I need you today. I need you.
(01:10):
I need you. I don't have the strength, the stamina,
the energy to do a whole hour without taking some
commercial breaks. Also, for all of you always complained about
how long our commercial breaks are. This is your hour
two o'clock today. More on that in a second. I
will tell you this and this. We'll go be We'll
peel the curtain back a wee bit. So on Friday,
we had Hugh Millin and Greg Cosel together, the minds
(01:33):
of football that cannot be topped by any radio station
in the country. When you put those two guys together,
it was fantastic. The Seahawk bye week, We've done this
two years in a row now, where Greg joins us
every Friday, and I've invited Hugh to come on and
kind of just run it just Hugh. You talked to
Greg and go during the bye week because there's no
game to preview or talk about so we did that Friday,
and as I thought would happen, and this is what
(01:55):
did happen. There's so much for those two guys to discuss,
so much that I just want to sit back and
listen to that. We didn't have time to get to.
You know, we only got halfway through. We did the defense.
So today at two o'clock through the first seven weeks
of the season, Great co Selle hu Millen talk all
Seahawks football at two o'clock and they'll talk offense and
(02:18):
from Sam Darnold to JSN to the offensive line, to
the tight ends, to everything you want to get to
running backs, et cetera. So that's coming up at two
o'clock today, and we taped it on Friday. That's going
behind the curtain. But we're doing those guys Friday. So
there's more we got to get. We gotta get the
offense booms. We did that. That's in the two o'clock hour.
Soft Deal join us as he always does for a
few minutes as well. We've got Factor Fiction at two o'clock,
(02:40):
two two thirty five. I should say, but I'm gonna
throw something out. I'm gonna ask the Molly Whoppers. We
have our final Molliwop segment that's scheduled of the year
coming up today at one with Nathan and Chris. Our
final one big thanks to simply Seattle for their support
(03:02):
all year. So our final mallywoper at one twenty and
we'll take it all the way up till two o'clock
with the boys, and we'll look back on the season,
and we'll look ahead to the off season, and we'll
look ahead to salary caps and all that stuff. But
I do a weekly hit on Czech television BC a
station up in British Columbia MPEN Vancouver with two guys,
(03:25):
my buddies, Donnie and Dolly. They have a great show.
We do it every Monday at ten fifteen. And so
I did it today and they asked me a question,
and I thought, that's a hell of a question. I
might just go ahead and steal that for the Molly Whoppers,
but steal it for you as well and all. Paul Moyer,
Dave Softy Maller, you know, Twitter fights aside, everyone handles
(03:48):
and has different emotions. But here we are seven days later,
and now we've heard from GM. Justin Hollander, President of
Baseball Operations, Jerry Depoto, Dan Wilson, Jess you were there
last week for the new conference. We played a bunch
of Jerry on the station last week as well. But
one week later, these guys asked me this goes, how
would you they go in what's going on down? They're like,
(04:09):
how would you describe, you know, like, like the season,
the Mariner's season as a whole, now that you've had
a week to kind of settle on it. And I'm
gonna ask the guys that today because when we first
talked last week, it was just the raw motion. All
we did was spend time on the game and the
decisions in the game. We didn't really get a chance
to look back at the season. And now we kind
of can and look back at a season that saw
(04:29):
the Mariners win their first division titles since two thousand
and one, get to the postseason, get to the ALCS,
obviously not advance, which you know, if we're being on us,
we're disappointed. Hell, they're disappointed, so of course we are.
But how would you describe the Mariner's season? And I
want to hear from you, guys say, well, plenty of
time to get talkbacks in and text today four nine
four or five one on the still unrestricted free agent
(04:51):
text line or we love the talkbacks. Those are their
favorites talk back line. All you have to do is
go to the iHeartRadio app, which you click on the
red microphone and if you're at ninety three point three
k r FM part of the IHEARTRADIOPP, hopefully that's already
preset for you, very easy to find red microphone speak
for thirty seconds or less. And the question that I'm
gonna ask Nathan and Chris coming up, and that I
(05:11):
was asked today, I mean, how would you describe this
Mariner season? Now that it's over and we've moved on success, failure, opportunity, lost,
hell of a run, all the above, good, bad and different?
How would you describe the season as a whole? We
can kind of put a bow on everything, and we
want to hear from you guys specifically today, and we'll
have plenty of time at the two o'clock hour to
(05:32):
do so after you and Greg talks Seahawks offense at
two o'clock and so we'll ask the boys that coming
up at at one twenty and then we'll take it
from there. We'll go through what you know. I mean,
everyone knows, everyone thinks and everyone believes that rightfully. So
probably Josh Nayler is your is your off season priority.
But we'll talk about salary and maybe somewhat restricted in
(05:53):
terms of what they want to spend. Sounds like around
one hundred and sixty five million or something like that.
Chris is really good with that stuff to find out
what you can get for that money, for example. But
we'll go down that road a little bit with those
guys coming up today at one twenty and just kind
of put an end of the year bowl on everything
as well. A couple of things. One real quick, not
going to get a daily power play in today. We'll
(06:15):
resume that tomorrow at God, are we gonna be able
to do that tomorrow? We need to. We'll find a way.
We may even sneak one in today at some point
during the two o'clock hour.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Went well, we do have extra time, We do that
extra time, and we do have a Lambert update on Cogo,
so we might need to sneak that in.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Why don't you that we have that? Sound right, so
let's do that. Let's do that maybe after Hugh and
and Greg we'll do that one. I'll save my cracking
thoughts until then. By the way, I did mentioned this
and updates they had today, yesterday and today off. They're
back at it tomorrow with Montreal seven point thirty a
little later face off the normal seven o'clock pregame. Montreal
is really good. They cracking. Loss of them in overtime.
(06:54):
I'll get the overtimes and the shootouts mixed up is overtime.
They lost to Montreal last week. Montreal's best team in
their division right now. Really good young team. Seattle five
to and two beat Edmonton on We call it the
Anders Cup because Andrews hates Edmonton. Beat those guys on
Saturday nights. Just a terrific game three two the final.
Joey was great, Beverly had two goals.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
One night.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
Returner Brandon Montour's brother if you missed it, just recently
passed away from als. That's why he was away from
the team. Really emotional night all the way around and
along those lines. If you were watching the game, you
noticed that we got knocked off the air for a while,
got back on using our fee the feed from our
friends in the Canadaate sports Net. Big thanks to them.
No post game because we had no truck. We had
(07:35):
a power surge thanks to the winds and the rains
and all the stuff going on. I would imagine, well,
and then i'll I wanta saw you land because I
go down five one. I always get five one nine
and five eighteen mixed up. But whatever the road is,
it goes east west towards I guess, yeah, east west,
I guess towards four h five by the airport there. Oh,
(07:57):
five one, I think it's five on nine. I think
it's five y nine if not five eighteen one of
the other, but two are very synonymous, yeah, because they
kind of Chris Anyway, I turned to go home, and
I'm cruising along and all of a sudden I stopped
right where the planes fly overhead and sat there for
over ninety minutes, like what the hell, I figure is
like like this this sucks. Probably a fatal accent or
something like forever. No huge tree fell across the road, Yeah,
(08:21):
and they had to sit there and chop it up, yep,
And they brought a guy in to do that. And
so we sat there for a while, and then you know,
got home to no power. Like a lot of people
in the area, about two hundred fifty thousand people. So
you know what, as we say in hockey, stick taps
to our friends at p SE Pugsound Energy and not
the people behind the scenes because you guys you're planning
sucks because you have way too many lines to get
(08:42):
knocked out. But I will say this, stick taps the
men and women, the workers, the line workers that get
out there and get our power back. We lost it
for about fourteen hours. I know most everything should be
back by later today, I believe, or by tomorrow at
the latest. But you know, pouring down rain on Sunday
and those crews are out there busting their backsides and
stuff put back on. So if you're one of the
(09:02):
fine folks for Pestown Energy down for helping us out
in southeast King County, man, thank you, thank you, and
thank you. You guys are awesome. Even nobody likes to
lose power. It's like my least favorite thing, like most
people's in the world. But good job by those guys
to get most of us back up and running asap.
All right, Mollywop Monday a final scheduled mollywap. Anything after
(09:24):

Well sometimes they are, but most of the time they're
not good. So we'll check in with the Mullywhoppers Nathan

Speaker 4 (12:16):
All Right, we're.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Gonna this is this. We did our Game seven post
mortem last week, so we're not gonna dwell on that
unless it comes up into casual conversation. This is about
looking ahead, looking back, and kind of taking an overview
of what we just witnessed over the last few months
of Mariner baseball, a ninety to seventy two regular season,
twelve game playoff run that ended, of course, in Game
(12:39):
seven of the ALCS, I asked the question to our listeners,
and we're gonna play the talkbacks back later to the
following and again go to the iHeartRadio app little red
microphone speak for thirty seconds or last wall. So take
your text at four nine, four to five to one,
and I tease it by saying, I'm gonna ask Nathan
and Chris the exact same thing. I was asked this
(13:00):
today by a station I do something with in Vancouver
every day, a TV hit every Monday. And it's simple,
but it's probably effective, and it's probably a good way
to kind of start off the final show of the year.
How would you describe this Mariner season? Success? Failure, opportunity, lost, miss,
tell of a run, all the above, none of the above?
(13:23):
How would you just you're writing the summary of the
two thousand and twenty five Seattle Mariners. How would you do?
Speaker 3 (13:31):
So?
Speaker 2 (13:31):
Nathan Bishop will start with you.
Speaker 6 (13:35):
So we have to be simple because we don't have
like two hours to talk about this one simple question.
But briefly, yeah, I think it is a success. I
think that it's hard to say that this team winning
its first division in twenty three, twenty four years, excuse me,
making the longest postseason run that it's ever made in
its franchise's history, and providing a new generation or generations
(13:59):
of baseball fans with memories that they're going to hold
close to their hearts for the rest of their lives.
A failure. Now is it enough? Which I think is
a separate but related question. I don't think that it's enough.
I'm not satisfied with the twenty twenty five Seattle marriages,
even though I think I would qualify them as a
(14:21):
success Ian Chris Crawford.
Speaker 7 (14:27):
Some of this is hard to answer because I'm still
I am still raw from that game. I am still
emotionally invested. For those who don't know, I work for
NBC Sports and I cover baseball games for them quite
a bit, and I was tasked with covering Game one
and I couldn't watch it. I followed it online. I
(14:47):
was praying that, yeah, I was praying that there was
a not an injury that I would miss because I
would get fired if I did. But I recaped the
entire thing based on the box score because I couldn't
watch it. I'm ill emotionally raw from that game, and
I will look back on this season at some point
and say, holy crap, they won the division for the
(15:09):
first time in twenty four years. They had a catcher
hit sixty home runs, and they'd hit five more in
the postseason. They made a couple of my favorite trades
that they've ever made at the deadline, and I will
look back on that, and I will look back on
that fondly. But I am so freaking tired of consolation
prizes being a Seattle sports fan. I'm so tired of it.
I'm so tired of it, and being one game away
(15:31):
from doing something that you've never done just pisses me
off more. It just makes me angrier. I wish they
would have just lost to Detroit in three. I'm not
gonna lie to you. It would have been a lot
easier and I could have looked back and said, ah,
there's still some good stuff. And then seeing all this
stuff about how oh, this is just the beginning. This
is just the beginning, guys. Forty eight years, it's been
(15:52):
a long freaking beginning. If this is the beginning, these
are the longest freaking movie credits of all time. Like,
I don't I don't want to be satisfied, and nobody
is said I'm not even saying anybody is satisfied, but
I kind of and I'm not. I'm not trying to
devalue how anyone feels or take away because I hate
people who tell people how to fan. But every I'm
(16:15):
so proud of the Mariners. Every Oh, I'm so glad
we're on this run. Oh, just wait till next year
actually makes me angrier because we shouldn't be talking about that.
We should be talking about the Mariners playing in the
World Series. We should be talking about George Kirby starting
against Tyler Glassan now tonight. We should be talking about that.
So I'm not quite ready to do this yet. I'm
(16:37):
not quite ready to give you, my boy, what a
wonderful season. At some point I will, but it's so
freaking raw, and I'm so freaking pissed that they lost
that baseball game that I just can't.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
Do it by two things. One Paul Moyer says, get
over it. Two two that's and smiling.
Speaker 9 (17:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
I didn't have that on the Bengo card either, Nathan,
you being captain positive today, I did not. I'm not
sure what world we're living in here, the role reversal
we just went through. Chris, let me go back to
you and stay with this for a second. Yeah, And
I think a lot of people feel like you do
right now. Hell, Nathan basically is see any way the
same thing as well, while trying to paint a rosier
(17:21):
picture than he normally does, really out of character. I
don't know what's going on there. We'll get to you
in a second. Come on, we'll get to you in
a second. I'm reading into what you're saying, and I
think I believe this to be true. Opportunity lost, Chris.
Speaker 7 (17:36):
Yeah, yeah, and you know, I'm just gonna be honest
with you here too. Hearing about like the great future
and stuff like that is hard for me too, because
I don't I I don't know how much longer I have.
I have some stuff going on, and hearing about the
(17:59):
great future of the mayor is cool. But when you
don't know, and then when you have a fan of
this team that loves it more than anything else, that's
ninety five hearing about the future of the team, that's
a little tough too. And I'm not asking the Mariners
to manage the team for me or my grandma. I'm
not asking anything. I'm not asking you to change how
you feel. But Opportunity lost, and then some you were
(18:22):
eight outs away. You were eight outs away from going
to something that I have dreamed about seeing the Seattle
Mariners playing Opportunity lost, And then.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Some I think, and I'm glad you mentioned that, because
we in this town should know nothing is guaranteed. YEP,
I'll refer back to Super Bowl forty nine. In fact,
I'll refer back to Super Bowl forty eight saying every
player in the locker room that I was speaking to
you in met life, this is the start, This is
(18:54):
just the start. Here we go, this is a this
long run is going to happen. Fall just show the
next year. After that, guys start holding out, Guys want
more money, you can't keep the roster together, Guys get hurt,
Guys age out, and last I checked, they haven't been
to an NFC championship game since the twenty thirteen season.
Speaker 5 (19:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
I hate when I hear people say, yeah, it's just
the beginning or the future is bright some sport, sure, right,
Like if I'm the krack in are building something, they
just started the organization five years ago, you know. But
that's not the case with this baseball team. They've got
a GM that's been in place or President Baseball Oups
for ten years, Nathan Opportunity lost.
Speaker 6 (19:36):
Yeah, and just echoing what you guys are saying. We've
been hearing the future is bright since the day that
the Marin has decided to turn this roster over after
twenty eighteen. I've been hearing that exact same wine for
seven years. So I am absolutely on board with you
guys saying that I don't need to hear about how
bright the future is, especially if you take a look
(19:57):
at this actual roster right at this exact second. I'm
sure that we're going to go into it more down
the line. There's so much work to do on this
roster just to bring the band back together all together
for another run at twenty twenty six, Like if your
team run it back, like I was kind of half
joking the last offseason talking about how the best thing
they could do is not do anything at all. If
(20:18):
that's how you feel going into this offseason, that you
just want to take this group of players that you
fell in love with and run them back, dude, they
got so much work to do to do that. And
so yeah, it's absolutely an opportunity loss.
Speaker 9 (20:29):
We've waited.
Speaker 6 (20:30):
I'm forty three years old. I've never seen them get
this close before, and that's the part that stings me.
I don't know if I'm ever gonna see them get
this close again for the rest of my life, and
so like that part is infuriating and the only reason
that I'm I think personally it doesn't really matter.
Speaker 4 (20:46):
It's just personal experience.
Speaker 6 (20:48):
To Chris's point, we're not trying to tell people what
to do or what to think about here, but for
me personally, not trying to be too sappy. Like I've
been pretty open about, you know, how important my family
is to me, and the experience of getting to share
this with them. I've been raising my children now for
almost two decades, and this close, little nuclear family that
we've built together is going to end. You know, in
(21:09):
a couple months. My oldest is going to go off
to college. If the Marriagers had done this next year,
it would not have meant nearly as much to me
as it did this year, because I got to share
it with my entire family together, and we bonded over
it in a way that we've never bonded over, this
thing that has been central to my life the entire
time they've existed. Our family has existed, so the timing
(21:30):
for me was exceptional. But if we're going to get
down to brass tacks and talk about what the future
actually looks like for this team, boy, oh boy, do
they have a lot of frickin work to do. And
as I said at the beginning, and this is why
I said that, it's it's not complete, it's not necessarily enough,
they owe it to us. When I read a full
(21:51):
page ad from John Stanton in the Seattle Times and
he says, we're just getting started. Why are we just
getting started now?
Speaker 9 (21:58):
John?
Speaker 6 (21:58):
This is about to be your eleventh year owning the team.
I thought we should have started in twenty sixteen, what
about twenty nineteen, what about twenty twenty, what about all
those years? Those would have been good times to start.
So yeah, it's mixed emotions for.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Me, guys, interesting because I had a similar like, you know,
I know since we started doing this, the you know,
Chris watching games with his grandmother, How important that is,
how cool that is. And frankly, there's part of me
that's been a wee bit jealous of that. And Nathan,
you and your family watching games together. My son was
(22:33):
home this year, my daughter you know, obviously a little
bit older, she's moved out for a while, but having
my son home this year and watching games with him
and my wife, who's not a big sports fan, and
how invested we were, how it brought o like it
was something our family was. Yeah, And so for those
out there, I won't even name put the name out
there again, but saying get over it. Like that's the
(22:56):
beautiful thing about being a fan. How you fan and
how you get invested, whether it's with friends, family, maybe
by yourself, but a lot of times, like you guys
just share with your friends and family and that's no
longer there and there's no guarantee it'll ever be back.
And that's the beautiful thing about a seven game series
or a five game series, unlike one off football games.
One off football games are great, make no mistake, the
(23:17):
NFL's king. But how cool is it when you're just
we're invested in seven games. I'm listening to the postcast
every night. What are Chris Andander's saying? You know, what's
going on with a light bat? What's happening? What are
we doing? You just get so invested and there's no
guarantee it comes back. All right, Let's let's move into
that next direction. Why I want money back to by
simply sales simply dot Com. Also a big thanks today
(23:39):
to stot Columba Casino and Hotel for all of their
support during our World Series ALCS Alds Major League Baseball
Playoff coverage, SnO Casino dot Com. Let's start with the
biggest thing out there. It's Josh Naylor, Chris, It's a priority.
It's going to cost. Yeah, let me start with this.
(24:00):
How important if you're going to be running it back
and just starting is that first basement? And what's it
going to cost?
Speaker 7 (24:09):
So the first part, the last part is probably the easiest.
It's gonna be somewhere around five years, one hundred million.
It might be four years eighty five million, with like
a vesting option something along those reigns. The importance is
an interesting one because, like everyone else, I want Josh
Naylor back. I really liked watching Josh Naylor play. I
(24:30):
love the intensity, I love the fun. I loved one
of the slowest players in baseball being one of the
best stolen base threats in baseball. That was it was
a hoot and holler, right, But I will point this
out number one. He is twenty eight years old and
entering his prime is now, so you know, a couple
more good years I would expect. The other thing I
(24:52):
want to point out is the one thing this free
agent class has is some guys who could play first base.
Pete Alonso is certainly going to opt out of his contract.
One of my favorite Japanese bats ever is going to
hit the market. Is probably best at first base, a
guy nam Munataki Muranami. He is an absolute stud. There
(25:12):
are other options here. You have to go get a
first baseman. I hope it's Josh Naylor because I think
there is something that he adds, and you know, just
watching him play was a heck of a lot of fun.
He's not the only option. If you go get Pete Alonzo,
I'll be pretty happy. If you go get Murram, if
you go get Murriyami to go play first base for you,
(25:33):
I'll be pretty happy.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
There.
Speaker 7 (25:34):
There are some other guys there, but I do believe
that Josh Naylor being a priority makes an awful lot
of sense.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
There will be competition for Naylor, yes.
Speaker 7 (25:44):
Yes, one hundred percent. Yeah, there will be teams like
I would imagine the Yankees will have some interest in Naylor.
I would imagine that the Red Sox, the Guardians actually
would make sense if they actually spend some money. The
Mets if lose Peede Alonso, there will definitely be competition
for Josh Naylor.
Speaker 5 (26:03):
Nathan.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
What does Josh Naylor mean more than just baseball? If
they are able to get him, or if they're or
if they lose him, what does it say.
Speaker 4 (26:13):
Well, if they lose him, it's just a sign.
Speaker 6 (26:15):
I mean I kind of have jokingly put out there
that it's going to be terrible news if the rest
of baseball figures out that Josh Naylor is a free agent,
because you know, it's just that's the way that the
Mariners do business. Chris just mentioned the Yankees and the Mets,
and it's funny to think about the Mariners going to
because it's this isn't a restrict it's not football. It's
not a restricted free agent issue here, Like he's a
free agent free agent. Everybody can spend as much money
(26:36):
for him as they want. So, Like I'm kind of
half chuckling because the idea of the Mariners going toe
to toe with these guys and if it this is
kind of like why we have this cool off period
for these guys after the playoff run because the player
who probably I assume it in like twenty four hours
after the season ended. You ask Josh Naylor if he
wants to be back at Seattle, he says absolutely, because
(26:57):
you could tell that he loved to hear everything about
the way that he was here, said that he loved it.
But in two or three weeks, when he's been hanging
out with his family and he's got his agent telling
him that he can get a fifth year and one
hundred and ten million dollars from Steve Cohen, who doesn't
give a you know what because he just wants to build.
Speaker 4 (27:13):
The best team.
Speaker 6 (27:14):
I mean, at that point, it's going to be interesting
to see if the Mirrors will do what's necessary in
order to reacquire him. And so I think Jerry said
all the right things at whatever you want to call
the thing they did at the end of the year
this year where they kind of met in like a
broom closet and just hash it out a little bit.
But I don't think it's up to him. And so
that's why I really think the focus for this offseason
is put up a shut up time for this ownership
(27:37):
because if they if they think that they can run
it back and win a World Series in twenty twenty six,
Josh Naylor is a big part of it. I'm not
questioning Chris's diagnosis of this Japanese first basement at all.
Speaker 4 (27:48):
He knows baseball front, back, forward, and sideways.
Speaker 6 (27:50):
I'd rather not take a shot at a guy that's
never played in Major League Baseball for a winner, go
home kind of season like twenty twenty six could be.
And we've seen Josh Naylor succeed in Seattle. I think
it's a big deal for them. I'm just curious to
see if they can actually close the deal.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Chris, what do you do with genal Uh?
Speaker 7 (28:07):
This is a really tough one because he was he
has one of the biggest moments in Seattle Mariner history.
More derogatory than complimentary, if I'm being completely honest with you.
But it was a huge and I loved it, and
you know, there's definitely some clubhouse vibe stuff here too.
Speaker 5 (28:21):
But he was.
Speaker 7 (28:21):
Awful, absolutely awful for the over one. He was here
for a third of the season. Guys, this is not
like some small sample. He was terrible. If he wants
to come back and is willing to sign for undermarket
or and you know, you do have to acknowledge that
the Seattle Mariner's budget is part of this. Like I
know who that John Stanton isn't going to spend more
(28:43):
than one hundred and sixty six million dollars. Apparently you
do have to acknowledge some of that. So if Gino
Suarez wants to come back on like a one or
two year deal, I want him back. Like he's better
than Ben Williamson. He is better than Ben Williamson, but
he's not so much better than Ben Williamson that he
can beat your big free agent signing. The fact is
there's more volatility in his profile than any of the
(29:06):
big three free agents that the Seattle Mariners have. So
I'd love to see him back. I kind of doubt
that he's coming back.
Speaker 2 (29:12):
All right, Well, we'll talk about Polanco as well. When
we come back. We'll take a quick break and put
a wrap on molliwat Mondays for the year, which also
makes me sad as well. Won't see these guys every yere. Oh,
there's a standing order that there's always a potential for
the emergency session. These boys know that all too well.
Half the time when it happens, I get a text
(29:33):
from one of them, are we going on? Do we
need to do something today? And the answer is always yes,
because my guy Nick Allen and others out there, they're
demanded to happen. We'll take a break, come back with
the boys next.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
From the R and R Foundation Specialist broadcast Studio. Now
back to Ian FURNESZ powered by Seattle Closest sports book
Snow call Me Casino and Hotel on Sports Radio ninety
three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
All right, we'll wrap it up with our final schedule.
Mollywop of the Year. The other free agent we talked
about Gino and obviously Josh Naylor. What do you do
with Jrae Polanka when he opts out Chris.
Speaker 7 (30:30):
And it's pretty easy to me, You basically just pay
him somewhere around what Polanka was scheduled to make with
the option and what Mitch Carver was making. Like that's
a pretty simple one to me. Two years, thirty two
million something along those lines. I think you have to
bring Polo back.
Speaker 4 (30:48):
Nate, Yeah, I think that they have to.
Speaker 6 (30:51):
I think that's of the three that we're talking about
that's the one that's the most likely. It's it's still
amazing that he came back this year, and he wanted
to come back, So I think that show is probably
positive workings between him and the front office. So I'm
the most optimistic about that one.
Speaker 4 (31:04):
All right, three, all.
Speaker 2 (31:05):
Right, let's uh, Chris, who's ready to make a move
coming up? We know Williamson and young guys like that.
What changes based on.
Speaker 5 (31:14):
What you know?
Speaker 2 (31:15):
Then you're our expert in this regard that you know
with the young guys in the system, who's ready to
make that next step, whether it be a position player
or whether it be a pitcher. I would assume if
there's no Garver, is Harry Ford here all next year?
Speaker 7 (31:28):
What do you think that's going to be a really
interesting one? Because he's still your backup catcher, right, Like,
are you really do you really want the twenty three
year old to be your backup catcher? I still think
he's your best trade chip of the prospects, the most
realistic one, but he also may be your best option there.
We'll see what the other backup catchers look like. I
think the guy that's the most interesting here is Kate
(31:49):
Anderson because This is a guy whose stuff is ready
to go right now. And you know, the Mariners had
some significant starting pitching issues in twenty twenty five, much
more than we could have ever predicted. Even when we
acknowledge that, hey, it's they're kind of due for stuff
like this. This guy's stuff is so special and his
command is already so good. He could really change what
(32:12):
you do. He could really be a part of this
rotation as soon as June of next year, probably looking
more closer to July or August, but he's going to
make his MLB debut at some point next year. That's
the guy I'm the most intrigued to see. And it
also opens some stuff up for you, because if you
really do believe in Kate Anderson, it gives you a
(32:33):
chance to be a little bit more creative with some stuff.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
All Right, Nathan, I'll be well, just wildcard round for you.
What do you think? What do you what do you
want to do? What do you want to see them do?
Besides the obvious ones we already talked about. Do you
want to go back down the trade castile road again?
Move one of those guys pitching wise to add something
to what? What? What do you you walk into Jerry
to Poto's office, and once you guys are done exchanging pleasantries,
(32:57):
which I'm not sure how that will go, but once.
Speaker 6 (33:00):
We'd have plenty of time leftover after we were with that,
I think.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
What would you tell them? What do you want to see?
Speaker 4 (33:06):
So in this world do I get too?
Speaker 6 (33:07):
I'm working within the constraints of the budget that I
realistically have from John Stanton.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
Yeah, I think I'll keep it.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (33:15):
I think that the big thing I want to see
them do is not squad on their farm system in
this offseason. They have a bevy of prospects that a
lot of teams are going to be very interested in doing.
I want to see things. I'm going to throw out names.
The guys that they end up getting probably won't be
the kinds of names that I'm throwing out, but it's
just stuff to think about. Like there were rumors of
Stephen Quan being available at the trade deadline this last
(33:35):
past offseason, he would still be an absolutely wonderful fit
for this organization. That's the kind of guy I want
them to be very aggressive to go out and get.
They desperately need at least one corner outfielder We didn't
even talk about Randy and whether or not they're going
to end up paying him something like eighteen million dollars
to be a left fielder this year, so they're gonna
need corner outfield help a lot. I definitely want to
(33:56):
bring back Josh Naylor, and I'm going to lean hard.
I'm going to use my personal skills because I'm Jerry
Depoto in this situation, to lean on ownership to sign
a big guy at third base man like a guy
like Alex Bregman or something like that.
Speaker 4 (34:09):
Well, he would fit so well.
Speaker 6 (34:11):
I'm so tired of hearing people talk about he was
an astro, so we can't have him around here because
they hate him.
Speaker 4 (34:15):
Get over it.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Well he's a fabulous ball. I wouldn't have that one
astro like that. Just hit a three run bomb, right,
I mean.
Speaker 6 (34:24):
Yeah, yeah, So, I mean really, we're put up her
shut up time as far as I'm concerned with, and
I tend to talk about the front office and ownership
as one entity, even though I acknowledge there are moving
parts behind the scenes there we don't see. It's time
for them to not just bring back this the band
as it were. I want to see it improved. I
want to see a better outfield. I want to see
a better third baseman. No disrespect to Gino, who I
(34:45):
love and adore. I just want to see a better roster.
I don't want to see trading Luis Castillo to free
up money to go spend, because quite frankly, they shouldn't
have to free up money show spend. And we're talking
about Kate Anderson. I'm excited to make Kate about Kate Anderson.
I have no interest in relying on Kate Anderson in
twenty twenty six for a team that wants wants to
win the World Series. I want Louis Castillo. If Louis
(35:07):
Castillo hadn't been here this past season, they would have
been a train wreck.
Speaker 4 (35:12):
He was the most other than Brian wu.
Speaker 6 (35:14):
He was the only guy that went out every fifth
day and made every start. They need this guy around,
and if he ends up being bad, god forbid, we
eat a little bit of money. I mean, geez, it
doesn't matter. I just don't want finances to be the
thing that runs this show. And I know it's probably
going to be. I acknowledge that that's naive. I just
don't want to see it man, I want to see
them improve. I don't just want them to try to
(35:36):
achieve where they were this past year. A lot of
good fortune, a lot of American League teams being down
contributed to this year. I want them to build off
of this, not just try to maintain it.
Speaker 2 (35:48):
Chris real quick, Randy Nate brought it up. What do
you do with him?
Speaker 7 (35:52):
Yeah, that's a tough one. I would like him to
be by designated hitter. I would want him to be
the guy who's playing it d And that makes it
tough because Polonco, are you playing him at second base?
Then are you rotating it through? But he's a really
bad defensive player and it's not going to get better.
That's not how that works. Like he is a very
(36:12):
poor defensive left fielder on a team that still relies
a lot on run prevention. I want Randy Beck. I
think he's an awesome hitter, but it's tough to justify
him being your starting left fielder when he is more
detriment than asset And I hate that word, but.
Speaker 2 (36:29):
It's a tough one. Nineteen strikeouts and forty eight at
bats in the postseason two, so struggle, Yeah, he did struggle. Okay,
time to wrap it up. Quick final thoughts however you
want to do it or just shameless self promotion, Chris,
go ahead.
Speaker 7 (36:44):
I just want to thank everybody like this has been
so much fun over a hard, hard couple of years.
It was nice to even though I'm not satisfied, even
though I'm still pissed off, I can't acknowledge that this
is still my faceing to do. And I love you guys.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
Nathan Chrystal my thunder.
Speaker 4 (37:05):
I was I'm not gonna self promote.
Speaker 6 (37:07):
Getting to do this every single week is like one
of the coolest things that's ever happened to me in
my entire life. I can't thank you Ian enough. Jessamine
honors everybody at the station, the listeners who continue, for
some reason to ask for us to come on the air,
whenever the Mariners do something stupid. It's just one of
the most meaningful and special things. And to get to
do it this year just meant the world to me.
(37:28):
I just really really meant a lot what Chris said.
I just have a lot of love in my heart
for all the people that I'm sharing this show with
and our audience.
Speaker 4 (37:36):
It's just it was wonderful.
Speaker 2 (37:38):
Yeah, this was. You know, we've told the story million times.
Speaker 10 (37:42):
It was.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
It was started not with the best of circumstances, Kevin Mather,
but this year ends with the hell of a run.
And I've told you guys this listen. I have some
great guests on every week. I every one of them.
I like every guest I have on weekly. I wouldn't
have mon weekly.
Speaker 6 (38:00):
Not.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
This is different, like this is just different. It's different
for me, it's different for you guys. It's special. I
can come in in a bad mood, and even if
we're still in a bad mood after we talk about
the Mariners for forty five minutes, you know what, I'm
in a better mood of being in a bad mood
than I was. And it's because of you two guys.
And it's the thing that I think is the coolest
(38:21):
thing about it is that out of the ashes of
Kevin Mather, you guys have built a brand that people know,
that people talk about, that I have people ask me
about all the time, that I have people request all
the time saying, what do you think the Molli Whoppers
are going to say? What do you think they are?
They coming on for a special emergency session. Yes, Nick Allen,
(38:44):
they are to do that. In our business, it doesn't
happen overnight, and you never know when it's going to happen,
and you never know. You guys didn't know each other beforehand.
You never know when you're going to have chemistry. You
never know when it's going to click, and it has.
And I'm always sad this time of year because it's over.
We have winter meetings, we have off season news and
(39:06):
all that stuff, so we will talk again, who knows when,
sooner than later. Normally that's how it works with this organization.
But to have this year where we all kind of
shared all that going on. Listening to what you guys
did on the postcast was incredible. What a great job
you guys did of that on that. I can't thank
you guys enough for making my radio show that has
my name on it that I have to it's my
(39:28):
livelihood that I depend on to pay mortgages and things
like that. You guys make it better and I can't
thank you enough. So thank you guys. Appreciate it. Of course,
Nathan and Chris in the books for another year. Big
thanks to Simply Seattle. Simply Seattle dot com go support
those guys, especially in the holidays. My guess is we'll
be talking to you guys soon. That's it. We'll come
(39:49):
back you Mill and great co sale.
Speaker 1 (39:50):
Next now from the Star Rentals Sports to us Jordan

Speaker 1 (41:10):
You're home for the twelfth man in the NFL proudly
presents Hardcore Football with Hugh Millon. Run to you by
Hunt Services, Tato Lahorn and Cole Heights. Now here's Hugh
with the Infernets on Sports Radio ninety three point three
kjr FM.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
All right, welcome back in here you go, hardcore football
on a Monday afternoon. No a hardcore game to talk
about yesterday, because why well, the Seahawks out a bye week.
Next up hit the road against the Commanders. We did
half of this on Friday, and in all it was
an all transparency. We tape the second half on Friday.
Why because Great co Sale's a busy man. Hugh Millan's
(41:48):
a busy man. But Great Cosell was on Hardcore on
Hugh Millons with Great co Selle segment on Friday talking
Seahawks defense through seven games. Great co Sales now on
Hugh Millen s been hardcore football on this Monday, And
basically that's what these two guys do, is hardcore football.
And I'm gonna get the hell out of the way
and let these guys for the next seventeen to eighteen
minutes talk about the Seahawks offense seven games into the season,
(42:11):
Hugh Millen, I'm gonna turn it over to you to
get after it with Greg Cosell and chop it up,
fire away back.
Speaker 4 (42:16):
I love it.
Speaker 11 (42:16):
Well, let's talk offense here, and I think I think
the uh we talked about the rush defense Greg last
week that rush defense might be the best part of
the team on the Seahork team, I think rush offense
is the worst part. And just some numbers to reflect.
So the run percentage, that the frequency the Seahawks at
(42:38):
forty eight point nine percent run that's number one in
the NFL break rushing yards a game, they're nineteenth rush
yards per attempt, they're thirtieth.
Speaker 4 (42:48):
What do you see?
Speaker 11 (42:49):
And we'll get to granule on some schemes, but just
as a general view, you're looking at thirty one other teams,
you're comparing it, you're seeing these struggles by the Seahawks
rush offense.
Speaker 4 (43:00):
What do you see from that perspective?
Speaker 12 (43:03):
Well, just as a quick aside before I answer that you,
I think that Mike McDonald, and again I don't listen obviously,
I'm not out there. I don't listen to press conference,
so I don't know what the coach says. But I
thought it was fascinating that they opened up the game
against the Texans in twenty one personnel and ran isol
lead week. Okay, because that's an attitude play, as you know,
(43:24):
you know, you've been with a lot of teams that
ran the ball, you know, you were the Cowboys, And
I think McDonald pretty much started that game with the
idea that I want to run the ball and I
want to develop more physicality, and I think that's probably
something they want. But I would answer your question in
a more you know, macro way by saying that I
(43:45):
think that one of the issues with Walker, Kenneth Walker,
who's obviously very gifted in terms of quickness, burst, all
those traits that you look for in a running back,
is he's not an innate, natural death runner and he's
not a guy that immediately and innately gets harder.
Speaker 5 (44:05):
In the yards.
Speaker 12 (44:06):
He's he's a bouncer. So what happens a lot instead
of hitting it and getting two three yards and by
the way, as you know, you every yard matters in
the NFL, He's a guy that looks to bounce a
lot and there's too many you know, minus ones or
no gains and that really hurts an offense and charbone.
(44:27):
You know, he's just not gifted enough as a runner
to be a guy that to my based on my
tape study, that you want to give the ball to
a lot.
Speaker 5 (44:35):
He's just not gifted enough.
Speaker 12 (44:36):
So I think that Walker is the guy that and
I don't know if you can change a guy sort
of innate mentality, but he's the guy that needs to
be the guy. But he's at times it's it's a
struggle with him because he just does not hit it
up inside.
Speaker 11 (44:52):
Yeah, I think that's some money observation and First of all,
for those that are wondering, what is an ISO meaning
obviously that's a term for isolation, and what that is
is depending on the defensive front, the offensive guard on
the play side will generally block down with the center
to create a double team.
Speaker 4 (45:09):
And then the fullback.
Speaker 11 (45:11):
Now in this case, Greg, that was that's your backup fullback, right,
I mean that was that was Brady Russell.
Speaker 5 (45:17):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (45:18):
But the fullback is leading up on the middle linebacker
generally depending on the front, and it's a it's probably
the most violent play in football. And you're right, EMMITTT.
Smith had more rush rush rushing yards and his cowboy
career on ISO than probably any other run with Moose Johnson. Uh,
clear in the way in that regard. So it is
(45:39):
and you're you're right to point out, hey, first play
of the game. It reflects what the discussion has been
all week. So I'm glad that you pointed that out.
Let's get granular on on K nine and and and Greg.
As you know, there was a lot of talk in
the off season about Clint Kubiak, the offense coordinator, that
(46:01):
he's gonna come in, He's gonna bring in the outside zone.
So let's let's let's talk about some numbers in that
regard the outside zone. The percent the Seahawks at twenty
five point two percent, that's seventh in the NFL. They
got fifty one attempts, that's about seven point three a game.
Speaker 4 (46:16):
They now their.
Speaker 11 (46:18):
Average on all running plays there is three point seven
yards and that's thirtieth. Their average on the outside zones
a little better at four point two. Average was about eighteenth.
But Canine averages five point five and Charbonnet averages one
point nine on the outside zone. Let me say it again, five,
So so Canine. There are nineteen running backs who have
(46:42):
twenty or more rush attempts on the outside zone in
the NFL five point five average, that's fourth. Of course,
Bjehon Robinson is the king of the outside zone, as
you know.
Speaker 4 (46:52):
But but but.
Speaker 11 (46:53):
As we're getting granular on that running game that we're
told about the outside zone, the presence, they are actually
you know a little bit better in that regard, and
Canine's a lot better and maybe reflective of your observation
about the bounce nature, Hey he's you know, he's kinda
there's a built in opportunity for a bouts on a
on a stretch. Maybe just talk about that what you
(47:13):
see from the outside zone specifically.
Speaker 12 (47:17):
Yeah, well, as you know, you I mean outside zone
at some point, I mean unless it's totally clear to
the perimeter, which rarely happens, at some point you've got
to stick your foot in the ground and you've got
to get your shoulder square, and you got to hit
it up. You know, that's essentially outside zone. And uh
and I just you know, Walker to me is uneven
in that regard. And the thing is is he's so explosive.
(47:38):
There's such natural quickness to him, and I don't think
he and I think he does have some natural power
to him as well, but he just too often, you know,
when he feels that it's muddy, he just doesn't hit
it up in there. And I think that you know,
you know the difference. I mean, I hope people listening
know the difference. There's a big difference between second eight
(48:00):
and second and twelve. It's a big difference in terms
of play calling, play calling options, how your quarterback feels
about the play. And I just think that, you know,
I learned this. I worked with Merril Hodge for years
and years and years, and you know, He used to
tell me that when he first started in the league,
Joe Green was still playing, and Joe Green made it
very clear to him. And I imagine when Joe Green
(48:21):
spoke that people listened, and Joe Green told him that,
you know, hey, if you get one yard, that's better
than gaining no yards. And I think that that has
to be the attitude of backs. You know, you can't
search for big plays. They have to come naturally. And
I think, again, I don't know what's in Kenneth Walker's head.
Obviously I don't, but I think when I watch his tape,
(48:43):
I always feel you as if he's searching.
Speaker 4 (48:46):
Greg Hosill with us.
Speaker 5 (48:48):
I agree with that.
Speaker 11 (48:48):
And and by the way, just a thought on Greg,
I'm gonna embarrass him here for a second. He didn't
know I was going to say this, but he is
the one guy, one analyst in all of football on
any network anyway where local, national, that did not play
the game, but knows the game to the level of
coaches and quarterbacks. And so when Greg Cosel talks, I
(49:10):
listened because I know he's looking at thirty two teams
and we're getting a wonderful perspective from him. Looking at
the Seahawks before we transition into the passing game, and
obviously Sam Darnold, Greg, let's let's kind of hit a
point that's kind of in between those and that's play
action pass. Now you and I on the thirty third team,
and we saw a presentation not terribly long ago, and
(49:34):
thirty third team is kind of a think tank of
former GMS. There's some few players, a lot of GM's
former head coaches. When you know, when Bill Pollian is talking,
you know you listen to him. A Hall of Fame GM, right,
among many others. I mean, Chris Peterson's been on it,
you know, so so. But we saw a presentation and
(49:54):
there was very firm statistics that said that it doesn't
play success is the number one thing you can do
to help your passing game is to go out of
play action. But play action success is not determined on
how well you run the football. If that's true, that's
good for the Seahawks because right now they're not running
the ball real well. But it seems counterintuitive. I want
(50:19):
Greg Cosell to tell us about your opinion in that
regard about the specific facet play action effectiveness. How important
is it that you are running the ball well to
have that yes or no.
Speaker 12 (50:31):
Well, no, it's been proven overtime you that there's really
no correlation whatsoever between running the fall effectively and play
action success. Because think of it this way. If you're
a defense, if you're a linebacker and it's the middle
of the second quarter, no linebacker goes into the huddle
and says, hey, you know what, guys, they've had eight
(50:51):
rushers for eleven yards, so we don't have to worry
about the run game. It doesn't work like that. You know,
defensive players, particularly second and third level players, taught how
to react to indicators and cues, and they react to
what they see in front of them. They're not reacting
to whether it's been great or not. I mean, look,
you played with the Cowboys. Obviously they had a great
(51:12):
run game with them at Smith, but their run was
established before they even stepped on the field.
Speaker 5 (51:17):
They didn't have to run the ball well.
Speaker 12 (51:19):
In a given game for play action to work. That
was already just built into how they played football. So
there's really no correlation whatsoever. And I will say this.
You know, when Klint Kubiak was hired, we all talked
about the play action, and I would say over the
last month, probably the last four games, we have definitely
seen an increase in the play action element, especially with
(51:42):
Donald under center. And to me, I think play action
with the quarterback under center is far more effective than
play action with the quarterback and the gun. And Donald
has been phenomenal in those four games with under center
play action and he pushes the ball down the field.
I mean he'said fourteen completion in the last four games
(52:02):
play action under center. Fourteen completions for three hundred and
eighty three yards. Think about that for a minute. Yeah,
fourteen completions three hundred and eighty three yards. That is unbelievable.
So I think we're seeing more and more of it.
Probably Klint, Kubiak and Donald just had to get comfortable
with the whole system. You now you can go through
OTA's trading camp. Until you play in the games, you
(52:24):
don't really know.
Speaker 2 (52:25):
All right again, once again, you're listening to Greg co
Sale Hugh Millen. It's a boy special edition of Hardcore Football.
We brought it over from Froday and we had Hugh
won talking with Gregor and the bye week we did
this last year.
Speaker 9 (52:34):
People loved it.
Speaker 2 (52:35):
I'm gonna get the hell out of the way. Greg
was talking about Sam Donald in the play action game,
Hugh fire away. Yeah.
Speaker 11 (52:40):
Following up on that free the play action, Greg, you
go back to a year ago when Donald was with
the Vikings. Every way I filtered play action, you always
came up with this that Jared Goff is number one
in terms of frequency on all the play action numbers,
but Sam Donald was number two in frequency and number
(53:03):
one in terms of passer rating. I mean filtering for
what I think is almost the hardest thing at quarterbacking
filtering the fall away Greg under center play action and
throwing the ball between the numbers. Sam Donald had a
passer rating of one hundred and forty three. And to
turn your back on the defense, I'm glad you talked
(53:24):
about that because it's happening again this year and here
Donald is number one in the NFL in yards per tempt,
number one in yards per completion, and number one in
terms of the percentage of his completions that are ten
or more yards. He's pushing the ball down the field.
As you said, let's just kind of put the spotlight
(53:45):
on him. What you think about Donald relative to other
quarterbacks and what he's bringing to Seattle.
Speaker 12 (53:52):
Well, the last two years, I've loved the way Donald
has played, and you're one hundred percent right, And I
think that's one reason why they wanted to go get Donald,
because they knew they were going to They hired Kubiak,
and they wanted the play action pass game under center,
which is no as you know, you was a learned
to trade because you know, when you turn your back
to the defense. Not every quarterback fields very good about
that because the defense is not in the same place
(54:13):
they were before you turned your back. So that's a
learned trade, and that's hard to do, you know. And
I think that Donald. The one thing I've always liked
about Donald these last two years is that he pushes
it down the field of play action. He's not looking
to check it down. He's looking to throw it down
the field. And you made a great point about throwing
between the numbers. You know, that's hard to do in
(54:35):
this league.
Speaker 5 (54:36):
You know, it's.
Speaker 12 (54:37):
Different than college football, where the hash marks are wider,
and it seems like, you know, it seems like you
don't have to throw in the middle of the field.
You just work outside. In the NFL, the NFL game.
Both the run game and the pass game for the
most part are played in the middle of the field
because of the hash marks, and those are hard throws.
Those window throws versus own coverage between people or you
(54:58):
have to layer it just over a second level defender,
those are difficult throws and Darnold's made those throws really well. Now,
one final point I think is really important about this offense,
and it allows them to get more predictable looks. This
is a base personnel offense. They've only run eleven personnel,
meeting three wide receivers on the field about thirty five
(55:20):
percent of the time. They are a base personnel offense.
And by that I mean they play with multiple tight ends,
two and three tight ends, and Arroyo can line up
anywhere the rookie and Barner is actually an interesting player
as well. But the point is is you tend to
get defenses that play base defense, and so as you
know you from when you played, you know when you
(55:42):
defense is in base you tend to get more predictable fronts,
you tend to get more predictable coverages. The playbook isn't
as extensive in your base defense as it is in
your sub defenses, and I think that that's really helped
as well.
Speaker 11 (55:55):
No, it really hasn't. And you made the point about
checkdown percentage. Out of thirty two quarterbacks, Donald is thirtieth
in his percentage of checking down right, So he does
want to push the ball down the field, and yet
his off target even though he's pushing the ball down
the field, the average off target this is coming from
the NFL staff portal, is ten point four percent of
(56:15):
quarterbacks or of passes. Rather our off target Donald just
six point three percent. That's second best in the NFL.
But let's shift to the targets you mentioned Barnard. I
want to get to him, but before we do that,
Jackson Smith and Jigba leading the NFL in I mean,
think of this, there's only two receivers that are over
one hundred yards a game, Poka Nicoa at one hundred
(56:38):
and three and JSN at one hundred and seventeen. Now
there's so much to like. I want to get your
take on what you see from him and the tape
before we talk about maybe a concern there, but just
in a general thought, what do you see from JSN
and how does he compare to the actual handful half
(56:59):
a dozen of very best receivers in the NFL today.
Speaker 12 (57:03):
Well, I love watching him you because to me, first
of all, I think he understands how to use his
vertical stem to set up corners. And secondly, he's so
quick in and out of breaks at the top of
his stem. I remember watching him in Ohio State and thinking, boy,
this guy is so quick and that has translated to
the league. That's what he looks like. And I think
(57:26):
he's faster than I thought that he was when he
came into the league. I mean I remember the touchdown.
It was a couple of weeks ago. There was probably
Jacksonville when he ran the about a sixty yard touchdown
and he ran by Newsom like he wasn't there on
the post route to deep post yep. And you know,
he's just to me the way he sets up corners.
(57:50):
I mean, look what he did this week. You know
he had a number of matchups against Stingley. Now they
didn't end up playing matchup football the Texans. They had
Stingley play left corner and lasted to play right corner,
but he worked against both guys. I mean he ran
an outcut. I think it was nineteen yards. It was
kind of a flood concept against Stingley where he just
angled his stem a little bit inside and all it
(58:12):
took was for Stingley just to turn his body just
a little bit to the inside and then he knew
immediately he had the outcut and Stingley couldn't play it.
He just has such a great feel for route running,
how to use his stem, had to snap out of
his brakes. He's a really really good receiver.
Speaker 5 (58:29):
Yeah, you know.
Speaker 11 (58:29):
And the thing for him when you see him in person,
what struck me when I first laid eyes on him
is WHOA That dude is a low cut guy, you know,
relatively short legs, you know, good size at six', one not,
elite but not, short but a low cut. Guy and you,
Know i've played with Ten Pro bowl, receivers you, know
(58:51):
on the field with The seahawks, watching you, know all
the best for a few. Decades i've put my eyes
on a lot of wide. Receivers John schneider says body
rofiling is a huge part of what we. Do that's
a direct. Quote and the body profile FOR jsn with
that low center of, gravity AS i, said a low
cut guy just allows for that body. Control when he's
(59:12):
speed cutting, out he can just, yeah he can just turn.
That and then of course HIS iq and his his his.
HANDS i, mean there's a lot of elite factors in this.
Speaker 5 (59:21):
Guy.
Speaker 12 (59:23):
Yeah and it's funny you say that because he doesn't
look six to. One because of, that you, know you
almost feel like he's a smaller.
Speaker 5 (59:29):
Guy but he's. Not that's the, thing you.
Speaker 12 (59:32):
Know so he's he's AND i actually saw him in
person a number of years, ago he was still At Ohio,
state and he just doesn't look big in, person but
he is six y, one you.
Speaker 5 (59:41):
Know and, that's LIKE i, said it's kind of.
Speaker 11 (59:42):
Surprising, yeah a couple more minutes With greg cosel and And,
Greg now if there is a concern here, Here i've
kind OF i, thought wait a, minute he he has
if you take his targets and he's, seventy he's got seventy.
Targets his cats percentage nineteenth in THE, Nfl, right so
there's been fifty, catches so there's been twenty. Incompletions but
(01:00:07):
the way they are are feeding the ball to. Him
the next closest, Guy Cooper cup in terms of, targets
has forty seven point one percent of the targets THE jsn,
OKAY i take the top eight teams in terms of
the division leaders right, now they average their second most
(01:00:30):
targeted guy is seventy nine point four percent of their
most targeted. Guy and again The seahawks are way at
forty seven point one, percent almost less than half the
number three. Guy the average is sixty three percent of
the eight division. Leaders the third, guy which is Aj,
barner he has thirty one percent of the targets that
(01:00:54):
you see FROM. Jsn the average for the division leaders
is sixty three. Percent going back to the number two
guys over the Last Super bowl on winners that this
number two guy averages a little over eighty percent of
the top. Guy and so for for the next closest
guy cup to be at only seven percent of the
(01:01:15):
targets THAT jsn is.
Speaker 4 (01:01:17):
Seeing is that?
Speaker 5 (01:01:18):
Something where is that.
Speaker 11 (01:01:20):
Like your cowboys riding for a fall type of a
concern or just what do you think about the imbalance
in that?
Speaker 12 (01:01:26):
REGARD i think that that's somewhat camouflaged and compensated for
by their use of base, personnel BECAUSE i think it's
harder for teams to do a lot of different things
defensively if they're in their base. Defense so is that
something they probably would like to work on and change
a little.
Speaker 5 (01:01:46):
Bit, Probably BUT i would.
Speaker 12 (01:01:48):
Think that right now they don't view, that you as
a big issue because you know the thing About smith
And jigba and. YOU i talked about this With ian
when when the trade when they ended up getting, cut
and right away a lot of people immediately, said, oh,
well what are they doing they got two slot. Receivers,
well first of, All smith And jigger they knew what
he was and he's lined up about eighty percent of
(01:02:09):
his routes on the, outside you, know not in the,
slot because they knew he could do. That So i'm
curious to see if that. Changes but you, KNOW i
don't think they're going to dramatically change how much they
play at a base personnel with multiple tight ends BECAUSE
i think that's been really successful for them and they're
going to make teams defend.
Speaker 2 (01:02:28):
That my last question for we make a rual last
one because we don't want to lose time here to
you fire away don't get yeah right, yeah fireway three two.
Speaker 11 (01:02:36):
One my last question For greg you Mentioned barnard hit
on him, quickly and Then i'm going to leave it
open end at any other personnel or schematic things that
you see From seattle that either impress you or if
there's a concern if you're A sea off, fan what
you see from this.
Speaker 12 (01:02:53):
Offense, well the guy That i'm most intrigued is the season,
progresses Is, arroyo the rookie tight in From. Miami BECAUSE
i think that he has a vertical dimension to his.
Game he can stretch it. OUT i think he's got
the ability to be what we, called you, know the
BOUNDARY x on the back side of, trips where he's
the single receiver to the short side of the field
(01:03:13):
and you can put three wide outs to the wide
side of the field and that can dictate to the
quarterback pre snap. Exactly How, So i'm really anxious to
see you how they deploy Your royo as the season
progresses and as he continues to develop in the.
Speaker 11 (01:03:28):
Offense, Well i'll tell You, Ian greg AND i have
had these kind of conversations on the, phone just kind
of talking shop and talking. BALL i Think, greg we
have a kinship and then we just we just can't get, enough,
right just love talking.
Speaker 9 (01:03:41):

Speaker 2 (01:10:27):
Pick they are number eight in the. Country just the
rambling wreck Of Georgia. Tech they are on the, road
taken on the Fighting Matt chasenows Of North Carolina. State
Georgia tech is a six point. FAVORITE i think that's
too low For Georgia. TECH acc is not. Good. NOW
(01:10:50):
i get that they're not. Good and first of, ALL
i Love Haynes. KING i think he's, special like college
football wise. Special the problem you will have For Georgia.
Tech Hollywood, smothers the running back For North Carolina state's
really good And Georgia tech has some. INJURIES i get,
that But i'm telling you right, Now Haines king is
(01:11:11):
the difference. Maker they are playing for something. More right.
Now Is Georgia tech sitting there a perfect eight and?

Speaker 13 (01:11:31):
Small all, Right so the pick is.
Speaker 2 (01:11:33):
It Is Georgia tech minus six Against North Carolina state fact,
four nine four or five to. One Georgia tech's a
potential playoff. Team they're not going to lose this, game
AND i think they're going to easily pull away and
win by more than a. Touchdown Georgia tech minus, six
fact four nine four or five. One if you disagree
fiction four nine four or five, one then you ask,
yourself why AM i? Texting? In why AM i doing all?
(01:11:54):
This it's a lot OF workI, In why WOULD i

Hedge is that what you're talking.
Speaker 2 (01:16:41):
ABOUT i will Take washington if it wasn't a bye week.

took them Against toledo and they won.
Speaker 2 (01:17:08):

but you, Know texas at six and two is such
a paper tiger like they're just Not.
Speaker 15 (01:17:48):
Oh it's all about where they, start, Right it's all
about where you. Start it's all about the national. Perception
and that's WHY i can't stand the preseason, polls because
teams get a leg up on other teams when they
don't deserve. It you, KNOW i, mean, really THE ap
pole is, archaic it's, ridiculous it's, outdated it's. Stupid all those.
Things the only thing that matters is THE, cfp which comes.
(01:18:09):
ON i believe in what a week and a half
for two weeks eight days from, now thank, you is
when the FIRST cfp rankings come. Out and my biggest
concern is that these morons that vote for THE cfp
are influenced by the morons that vote for THE a PEOPLE.
Speaker 2 (01:18:22):
I think they, are Don't they always seem to mirror
each other pretty, good at least a little. Bit, yeah,
well there might be some, shuffling but they're in the
same Groupings.
Speaker 15 (01:18:30):
Tony tony Castra cone did a great job on his
Little twitter account there of kind of talking about where
The huskies. Are besides THE ap, pole a lot of
other metrics and rankings and polls that show The huskies
or anywhere from twenty fifth to fifteenth In. America, SO i,
Mean i'll be honest with, you some of these Polls
i've never even heard. Of The Versus Sports simulator whatever
(01:18:53):
the hell that, is has them at. Fifteen Parker Fleming
College football Graft guy him at. Sixteen At College Football
nerds has him at. Eighteen Talisman, red who does.
Speaker 9 (01:19:08):
His own nerdy computer, rankings has him at.
Speaker 15 (01:19:11):
Eighteen Ken Massey Massy ratings Dot com has him at.
NINETEEN Espn strength to record Twenty sagarin twenty.
Speaker 3 (01:19:19):

Speaker 15 (01:19:19):
Whatever, man you guys don't play usc, Right, No, No
you've got three games in the next three weeks Against, Wisconsin,
ucla And purdue before The. Ducks so anything less than
nine and two before The orgon game is going to
be a disappointment for.
Speaker 5 (01:19:32):
Sure.
Speaker 2 (01:19:32):
YEAH i MEAN i think the REAL ucla showed up
this past weekend when they just got absolutly annihilated By.

Speaker 15 (01:20:03):
Season uh success with a massively heartbreaking and disappointing ending
end of? Story well, said that's just the way it.
WENT i, MEAN i don't think you have to paint
the entire thing with one. Brush it. WAS i, mean
they went further than they've ever gone. Before in their franchise,
history came with an eight out of The World series
and then ripped our hearts out and showed them to.
(01:20:24):
US i, mean the higher you, go the harder you,
fall right. Right, so ALTHOUGH i kind of, WONDER i.
WAS i was at dinner last night with some buddies
and we're talking, About, man if they were in The
World series and we were getting ready For game three,
tonight would we just be having the time of our
fricking lives right?
Speaker 9 (01:20:40):
Now and you know what they, lose they lose whatever.
Speaker 2 (01:20:44):
It would be made. It it would be In.
Speaker 15 (01:20:47):
Seattle we'd be up there At jimmy's doing the show
across From Team. Mobile we'd be two hours and fifteen
away from first Pitch Luiska still Versus tyler Glads now
when the first Ever World series game In seattle, history

Dude everybody would be, happy, everybody everybody would be, smiling
everybody would be having a great. Time we would just
be having the time of our freaking lives right.
Speaker 9 (01:21:13):
NOW i don't think it would have been nearly as
stressful as The.
Speaker 2 (01:21:16):
Alcs do you think just because we get you get,
there It's, okay whatever happens here is.
Speaker 9 (01:21:20):
FINE i MEAN i think. SO i don't.
Speaker 2 (01:21:22):
KNOW i, MEAN i think it would be.
Speaker 9 (01:21:23):
Nobody nobody can say for sure because they've never been.
Speaker 15 (01:21:26):
THERE i, mean don't you think there's a possibility that
even if we're down two to oh or tied at
one or.
Speaker 9 (01:21:32):
WHATEVER i, MEAN i don't. Know maybe we feel differently
when we get.
Speaker 15 (01:21:36):
There maybe you feel differently when you're on the cusp
of potentially winning the.
Speaker 9 (01:21:39):
Damn, thing, Right, yeah, Yeah BUT i just think we'd
be having a freaking fantastic. Time i'm just trying to.
Speaker 2 (01:21:45):
Vision i'm trying to envision right, now AND i Just
jimmy's right. Now Oh, god to be.
Speaker 9 (01:21:50):
Crazy tickets should be forty million dollars to get the.

big question right now for The crack and when will
they be fully. Healthy they've got his best start in
franchise history without a lot of. Guys they've got a dudes'

Speaker 5 (01:23:39):
Today so that was.
Speaker 16 (01:23:40):
Nice to, see you, know and we'll just see where
we go from. Here he's still day to, day but
certainly as it has been for the last little, bit
encouraging that he's on the ice and back in practice for.
Speaker 2 (01:23:53):
Sure in, fact that they're winning games without him and
Without jared McCann. Awesome by the, way if you missed,
It brandon on tour did return to the team On,
saturday and the reason he was gone his personal, reasons
which they didn't disclose the, time but he talked About
saturday pregame, show our pregame. Skate his brother's older Brother
cameron just passed away FROM als after losing that fight WITH.
(01:24:15):
Als just a horrific, Disease Luke gerrig's, disease and so
he was with the family with his brother and his
last days and everyone's thoughts go out To brenda montourre,
well he played great On saturday with that really heavy
heart along the. Way all, right that's your daily power

(01:24:36):
okay we've got a few more minutes here before turn
over To softy and faint top of the. Hour we
got a couple of talkbacks we'll get to in a.
Second we've got some more text we'll get too as.
Well BUT i want to hear this is this we
set this. UP i Asked chris And nate on our
Last mollywop, today very simple, question same THING i just
Asked softie one week. Later how would you describe The mariners?
(01:24:56):
Season which we'll get to in just a. Second i'm
getting a finger pointed at me right. Now, oh, yes it.
Speaker 13 (01:25:08):
Was can we clarify the finger it?
Speaker 2 (01:25:11):
Was it was an index. Finger it was an index.
Finger it was not a middle.
Speaker 8 (01:25:14):
Finger qualifying THAT i had to make sure it was
cued up properly And we're, ready all.
Speaker 2 (01:25:18):
Right Ask chris And nate again fallne mile wap of the,
year how would you describe the matter?
Speaker 6 (01:25:21):
Season so we have to be simple because we don't
have like two hours to talk about this one simple.
Question but, uh, briefly, YEAH i think it is a.
SUCCESS i think that it's hard to say that this
team winning its first division in twenty, three twenty four,
years excuse, me making the longest postseason run that it's
ever made in its franchise's, history and providing a new
(01:25:44):
generation or generations of baseball fans with memories that they
are going to hold close to their hearts for the
rest of their. Lives a? Failure now is it? Enough
WHICH i think is a separate but related. QUESTION i
don't think that it's. Enough i'm not satisfied with the
twenty twenty Five seattle, marriages even THOUGH i THINK i
(01:26:06):
would qualify them as a Success Ian Chris.
Speaker 7 (01:26:10):
Crawford some of this is hard to answer Because i'm
STILL i am still raw from that. GAME i am
still emotionally. Invested for those who don't, KNOW i work
FOR Nbc sports AND i cover baseball games for them
quite a, bit AND i was tasked with Covering game,
(01:26:31):
one AND i couldn't watch. IT i followed it. ONLINE
i was praying, That, YEAH i was praying that there
was a not an injury THAT i would, miss BECAUSE
i would get fired IF i. Did BUT i recapt
the entire thing based on the box score BECAUSE i
couldn't watch. IT i am still emotionally raw from that.
Game AND i will look back on this season at
(01:26:52):
some point and, say holy. Crap they won the division
for the first time in twenty four. Years they had
a catcher hit sixty homer and then hit five more
in the. Postseason they made a couple of my favorite
trades that they've ever made at the, deadline AND i
will look back on, that AND i will look back
on that. Fondly BUT i am so freaking tired of
consolation prizes being A seattle sports. Fan i'm so tired of.
(01:27:15):
It i'm so tired of, it and being one game
away from doing something that you've never done just pisses
me off. More it just makes me. ANGRIER i wish
they would have just lost To detroit in. Three i'm
not gonna lie to. You it would have been a
lot easier AND i could have looked back and, said,
ah there's still some good, stuff and then seeing all
this stuff about how, oh this is just the. Beginning
(01:27:36):
this is just the, beginning, guys forty eight, years it's
been a long freaking. Beginning if this is the, beginning
these are the longest freaking movie credits of all. Time,
LIKE i DON'T i don't want to be, satisfied and
nobody is. Said i'm not even saying anybody is, satisfied
BUT i kind of And i'm. Not i'm not trying
to devalue how anyone feels or take away BECAUSE i
(01:27:59):
hate people who tell people had a. Fan but Every
i'm so proud of The. Mariners Every, Oh i'm so
glad we're on this. Run, oh just wait till next.
Year actually makes me angrier because we shouldn't be talking about.
That we should be talking about The mariners playing in
The World. Series we should be talking About George kirby
starting Against Tyler glassan now. Tonight we should be talking about.
(01:28:21):
That So i'm not quite ready to do this. Yet
i'm not quite ready to give, you my, boy what
a wonderful. Season at some POINT i, will but it's
so freaking raw And i'm so freaking pissed that they
lost that baseball game THAT i just can't do.
Speaker 2 (01:28:36):
It good stuff From chris And. Nate big thanks to
those guys again this. Year the entire episode from earlier
today is up on the podcast. Page speaking of, which
let's hear from you. Guys we had a couple of
talk backs BEFORE i wrap things up with the text
fire away.
Speaker 17 (01:28:48):
Jess, hey, Guys chip, HERE i have determined that this
is a fork in the road off season for. Ownership
they have said they will spend when the time. Comes,
well now is the. Time i'm not suggesting you ring
sign every big free, agent but you start payroll where
it was it in the last, year at at The
All star. Break, okay fair. Enough it doesn't have to
be all in the off. Season but they have said
(01:29:10):
when the time is, right they will make the. Moves
now is the, time Sign, naylor bring in someone, else
shore up the, bullpen and when the time, comes make
the big.
Speaker 18 (01:29:18):
Trade Hither, Ian, Jessamine Chris. Emberien so the five stages of,
grief starting with, denial then, anger than, bargaining then, depression
and then. Acceptance i'm somewhere in between depression and. Acceptance
but you trigger, Me i'll go right into. Anger so
(01:29:40):
but as far as HOW i feel about the season,
overall we gotta see what happens in the off season
and ultimately next, year because the story is.
Speaker 2 (01:29:48):
Unfinished good stuff along the, way all, RIGHT a couple
of texts four, nine four to five one give the,
question how would you describe The mariner? Season eight outs
away four two five? Shoot all they had to do
was go two and three after the first two, victories
it would have been The World series just two and
three two a six area. Code if you told me
(01:30:09):
at the beginning of the year The marrions would have
been nine ounce away from The World, SERIES i would
have been blown. Away very. Successful season final went out
and spent dollars to pick up hitters and it paid.
Off cal's year. Unbelievable this will be a less painful
to get there and. Win would you rather get to
The World series and lose? There that would be even more?
Painful great, year let's fallo up next year where The
World series? Win which is? Obesome WHAT softi? SAID i don't,
know we don't know how to. Feel we're all just
(01:30:30):
guessing in that. Regard very hypothetical like would you feel
better or worse with A World series?
Speaker 8 (01:30:36):
LOSS i, mean that's the thing Is andrews AND i
both said to each, other is that we would be
less disappointed with A World series sweep if they had
won THE.
Speaker 2 (01:30:46):
A i think we just because we've never seen this
team get to The World. Series, YEAH i think because
of that it would have been.
Speaker 5 (01:30:56):
FINE i.
Speaker 2 (01:30:57):
MIGHT i might go with What softie, said AND i
think we do have a little bit of a thing
we can base that. On that'd be the two thousand
and Five seahawks With homebirn getting to The Super, bowl Beating.
Carolina here Watching Kevin bentley just Bully Steve Smith junior
in THAT Nfc championship game was so beautiful just getting.
(01:31:18):
There now losing and how they lost massively. DISAPPOINTING i get,
That but you, KNOW i don't know if that one
hurt as much as forty. NINE i don't. Know so
maybe a couple more BEFORE i wrap things. Up On Nick,
Allen you're, Correct dean Always mollywop always damn, right damn.
(01:31:38):
Right working at two, six working in the swing. SHIFT
i listened to the ride on the ride to. Work great, work,
guys keep on. Mollywopping it's For chris And. Nate another
two six area code Says. Ian please Have chris And
nate on at least once a month during the. Offseason
here's the good. News there's always stuff.
Speaker 13 (01:31:56):
Happening, oh there's gonna be stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:31:58):
Happening there's always. Happening and we.
Speaker 13 (01:32:01):
Also Have Ino sarah's joining us in the winter.
Speaker 2 (01:32:03):
Media, yeah we got that coming. Up and we have
our final visit tomorrow With joe shean regular. Schedule we
may Have joe on next. Week we'll see that may
end up. Working as far as The hugh greg co cell,
Segment joe six area cod that was football analysis. Porn,
yes it. Was it was so.
Speaker 8 (01:32:19):
GOOD i mean, YEAH i think that is the most
porn references that we've.
Speaker 13 (01:32:24):
Gotten is when those two a are on. Together ian
can a good? Way?
