Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now from the Star Rentals Sports to us Jordan ninety
three point three KJRFM Sports.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Headlines alrighty headlines are brought to you by Frost Brewed
cores Light Jess choose chill. Okay, I would like jill
cracking loss to the Montreal Canadians in overtime last night
four to three. But the good news is they got
a point. Why is that good news? And they didn't
get the two? Well, because they trailed three to nothing
with about eleven minutes to go in the third period
and they scored three goals in the final eleven and
(00:28):
tied it up, forcing overtime. Yeah, Cole Clawfield's got the
game winner. Joey probably won that one back. Nevertheless, they
get the point against a really good team. Uh. They
continue to be unbeaten in regulation at home five too
and two through nine games. Oh is that right?
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Five to two and two, you're the expert.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Five to two and three, sorry, five to two and three.
That's ten games into the season. They go in ten
games increments at least coaches too? Okay?
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Uh. Cal Rawley named the MLBPA Players Choice Word Player
of the Year, a almost well standing not a surprise
players look on that though, which is pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Those are the ones that count.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Yeah. World Series, by the way, it's still going on.
In case you're wondering, it's tied up to too. After
Toronto beat the Dodger six to two last night. Why
did they do that? Because Showhey was tired. That's what
I hear. He was tired. Apparently nobody else was, but
he was tired. Vladimir Guerrero. By the way, franchise record
for most postseason home runs is seventh. Tuesday nights. NFL
Lin's locked up defensive en eight and Hutchinson into a
(01:24):
four year contract one hundred and eighty million dollars or
one hundred and forty one million in guarantees. He was
a number two overall pick in the twenty twenty two draft,
and I got some Seahawk notes for it, but you
don't what I'm to do wait for the start of
the show to give those to you. Right now, it's
good to be back here at the Virginia Mason Athletics
Center SEA i K headquarters. Today. We're gonna talk to
Jaron Reid a little bit later. We'll have that interview
(01:44):
for you either tomorrow or Friday. By the way, I
try to get out and catch up with Jay Reid
on once a year.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
You're not gonna miss You're not gonna want to miss
this because it is. It's also like a mature Jaron
Read just.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
A different guy from when I first talked when he
came here as a rookie man. He's he's a different dude.
He's the alpha dog in that in that defensive room,
especially with the d line, and that's with some guys
like Chenna, DeMarcus, Lawrence Big Cat and all those dudes.
But there's no doubt who the who the alpha dog is.
It's him and he learned from the best when they
were towards the end of their careers, guys like Mike
(02:19):
and Cliff and all those dudes. So he's taken over
that defense is number one against the run in the NFL.
And so we're gonna talk to him coming up today
and have that for it you again either tomorrow or
Friday on the show. But it's always fun to go
one on one, and I just like to do the
interviews in person the phone interviews. It's not a fan
if I'm gonna take it behind the curtain for a second,
not a fan, and I like to see these guys, and.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
That is what makes you a pro ian.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
I appreciate that.
Speaker 5 (02:43):
We know.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
I'm gonna get to the Seahawks news of the day.
I was in for the Mike McDonald news conference, a
weekly news conference a minute ago. There's a lot to
get to. Plus a cool story regarding your friend just
DQ dan Quinn, the coach of the Commanders, see on
Sunday Night football this week.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
They go a lot of national games, a lot of
prime times.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yeah, and we'll talk. I'll Askaron Jared about that. I
don't know if that's still a big deal for players
or not. I don't know. I don't know how they
look at that. We'll talk to him about that. We'll
talk to Mike, Mike Omberan at two o'clock by the way,
coming up later, so we'll check in with him. I
was just going through something before I get to the
news of the day. I just because MJ asked me about,
you know, running back the band and how and he's
(03:24):
right in this. John Schneider knows when to cut bait,
and John Schneider knows when it's time to move on
from from different guys. I'm not ready to say moving
on from DK was the best decision yet. I know
the money involved and all that. I get that, and
so I guess because of the salary cap and the money,
sure you move on. But the year Jackson Smith and
(03:46):
Jig but jumps off the page at people. He wouldn't
be having the statistical year he's having. But I still
think that having a DK Metcalf. And I'll ask you
about this on Monday and Hardcore Football, if having a
DK Metcalf on your roster would still make you a
better football team. I kind of think it will, to
be honest with you, But that aside, do you know
Jackson Smith and Jig was on pace to set the
record for receiving yards in a single season.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Yeah, it's pretty rad.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
He's on nineteen a pace of nineteen eighty nine. Now
that's a seventeen game schedule. Calvin Johnson did it with
the Lions. It was a sixteen game schedule in twenty twelve.
So it's I don't know if we want to look
at it that differently in that regard. Here's the thing
I just kind of looked back at Seahawks stuff. Historically,
(04:30):
the Seahawks have had thirty one thousand yard receiving seasons
in their career in the history of the franchise in
fifty years. It's the fifteenth year of the franchise, So
in forty nine previous years, they've had thirty one thousand
yard seasons. Just to put into perspective the year that
is taking place right now with JSN. Out of those thirty,
(04:51):
eight of those came from a guy by the name
of Largent. Might have heard of him, Steve's first name.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
He's so nice too.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Hall of Famer Gold Jacket guy. Eight of the thirty
came from him. Four came from Brian Blades relatively the
same era. They kind of they played together for a
while book ended there. So twelve of the thirty, almost
half of them came early in the franchise years, you know,
in the eighty you know, seventies, eighties ish time of
(05:17):
time frame. Four came from Tyler Lockett during his tenure
in Seattle. Joey Galloway had three. D jack Daryl Jackson
had three. It's a very short list. DK had two,
and then he had also had a nine hundred dard
season two. DK set the record for receiving yards in
a single season by the Seahawks. Any guess, just rough
guess what it would be.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
I don't three, no, and honestly say fourteen.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
You're close. It's thirteen. It's thirteen oh three. And I
bring that up for this reason. Jays ends at eight
to nineteen. Right, he is gonna blow pass a single
season receiving mark for this team in a single and
he's gonna blow past this thing, blow past it. And
that's amazing. Like, it's just an amazing year he having
right now. I just think it's cool because a lot
(06:03):
of the focuses on the defense, and I get it,
and it should be on the defense. And like I said,
that's what we're gonna talk to Jarrean Reid. Speaking of
the defense, Julian Love suffered a set back in practice.
He is a candidate to go on the injured reserve
list now for the Seahawks. That's not a good thing.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
No, we're not like we and we love love.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
We love love Love is it now? Witherspoon on track
to play Derek Hall, which is an under the radar,
underrated miss guy they've had missing the last few weeks,
is also on track to play We'll Get the injury
report later, but they didn't walk through earlier. But Mike
McDonald saying those two guys are on track. Witherspoon and
d Hall are both on track to play. But the
(06:45):
Julian Love injury is a bummer because they need him
and they'll need him down the stretch. If he's got
to go on the injury reserve and miss a few games,
a few more games, so be it, I guess. I
mean they can make do tyle cottas played better. You know,
Kobe Bryant's trying to hold the four down. They need
Julian Love, make no mistake about that. Even Warri's presence
in the lineup's been great. It'd just be nice to
have a healthy secondary, which they haven't had all year.
(07:06):
I think it's five snaps before Emon Worri got hurt
and then when he by the time he came back,
other guys have been hurt with Theirspoon, et cetera, and Love,
so they're a little bit banged up there. That's the
news of the day out here. It was a cool story.
I mean this obviously they're playing the Commanders on Sunday,
and so a lot of the talk out here, a
lot of questions and I'll ask I'll ask Jared Reid
about the same thing. Is about Bobby Wagner and Dan Quinn.
(07:27):
Now Jared didn't play for DQ, but Bobby Wagner first
and foremost. I mean Mike McDonald. Actually they had him
in when he was a decordinator at Baltimore. They had
him in, Bobby Wagner in for a visit. He ended
up signed with the Rams that one year, if you remember,
didn't want to go back east. Now he's back with
d Q in Washington, first ballot Hall of Famer.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
I'm just Frankie Louver too.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Yeah, yeah, with Frankie Loubu. But b Wagner is just
he's the gold standard. He'll have a gold jacket the
first go around. If he doesn't, it's a crime because
he should be unanimous, like just go in there.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
There's no way he does it.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
No, And I think I I say, I trust the
Pro Football Hall of Fame more except for the little
thing called Mike Homran right now. Yeah, but we'll see
the uh. But the story he told McDonald told well,
I mean he talked about having Bobby and for visit Baltimore.
But he told a great story about d Q and
it kind of and I'll ask Mike about this later
(08:22):
because I think it's just it's I think this is
how McDonald kind of handles himself in the building. Mike
McDonald was a grad assistant. God where was he grad
assistant Michigan at the time. Georgia might have been Georgia.
I think it was a Georgia at the time. He's
a grad assistant in college and so just young coach.
And I mean, anybody that knows, if you know football
at all, college football grad assistants, no matter what level,
(08:44):
it's a It is not a glorious job. It is
a grunt job. Like you you are grinding over like
tape just to prep another guy to actually look at
the tape. You're fetching coffee. I mean, you're doing you know,
you're doing the worst of the worst jobs, and you're
not getting paid for it. You're getting school or secondary
education paid for what have you. You gotta love the game,
(09:05):
you're gonna love really have a desire to be a
coach at some point, to be a GA And that's
what McDonald was doing. He came out here and he
met through Todd Graham was the defensive coordinator at the
time that he was working for, and Todd knew dan
Quinn and Mike's got a relative, remember this from his
opening press conference. His cousin or nephew or somebody's They
(09:25):
got some sort of relative that lives in Kirkland. So
he was out here visiting and they set up a
meeting where he'd come meet DQ and he said, he
walked into the building here at the Virginia Mason Athletic
Center and he was just an awe like walked in
and like I mean and if.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
I mean, it's a magnificent.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
It's pretty Yeah. Every time I come out here and
do a show or cover the team, I kind of
there's a pinch myself thaying like, hey man, this is
this is pretty cool. It's the NFL, it's my hometown team,
and this facility is really cool and most people would
die to be out here. I understand, it's really cool.
It's it's pretty awesome. And he walked in to have
this quick little meeting with just a kind of a
(10:02):
meet green, just a networking thing. There wasn't a job opening.
He just wanted to meet Dan Quinn, who was thought
to be you know, kind of the pinnacle the business
at the time as a DC out here he walked in.
He said, what struck him about dan Quinn was the
relationship he had with players and the deep relationship and
the respect that the players had for him. And there's
(10:22):
a fine line. I'm gonna ask Mike about this later
because I know Mike as is with his guys, like
you have to have a tight knit, really close relationship
with your players, and you still have to be the coach.
Now as a coordinator, it's a little different than the
head coach, but I think we still see that with
DEQ in Washington and McDonald.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Why Bobby's there, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
That's why, one hundred percent, why Bobby's there. The you know,
watching you know how Mike McDonald is with these guys
and talking to players like Jared Reed and others that
we've talked about. There's such this great respect for Mike
McDonald and what he is, and part of that comes from,
you know, as he mentioned today and talked to the
story about his meeting with dan Quinn and meeting Dan
(11:02):
out here and speaking with DQ and seeing d Q
walk walked around the facility with him. He said he
knew everybody by name, doesn't matter if it was the
guy that was cleaning the windows or vacuuming the meeting
rooms or serving the food in the cafeteria, my guy.
Maybe it might be my guy Jeff out in the
parking lot, whoever it might be. He knew everybody, knew
(11:25):
everybody by name. And then the player relationship that dan
Quinn had with everybody he said just really really struck
him and it stayed with him. And I think that's
an important thing. We'll talk to Mike about that a
little bit later on how important that is. And I
think it exists now. Listen, Pete had that too. Pete
had that to Yes, Yeah, Pete, would you know publicly
(11:46):
never throw a guy under the bus. Was remarkable as.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
He does protection one hundred percent.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Yeah, And I think that's I think that that is
there's something about that and coaching, and I don't think
everybody has that, to be honest with you, I don't
think everybody has that type of relation. You know, it's interesting.
It doesn't always work out. James Franklin had that type
of relationship at Penn State didn't work out. I mean,
by all accounts, players love him there, but it doesn't
always work out. I don't think Brian Kelly had that
at LSU, you know, and so and I can tell
(12:13):
you this just you know this. Yep, Jake, Jake Dicker
did not have that at WAZU. It was it was
the other way around. The guys were looking at him
as a fraud.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
I was thinking more like the antithesis of Jim Mora
was Pte Carroll.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
That's a good way to look at it, too. So
we'll talk to We'll talk to Mike about that coming
up a two o'clock. All right, speaking in college football,
that's a cool story, like he just his respect. He
has a report for Dan Quinn and how he kind
of conducted himself and how it stuck with him today.
Was kind of cool to hear him tell that story. Okay,
we'll take a break. We're out the Virginia mased Athletic Center.
We'll come back. We'll check in with Stuart Mandel. College
football is a mess right now, to say the least,
(12:50):
but you know what, it's an entertaining mess and I
love it. We'll talk to Stewart coming up next.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
It's time to go inside college football with Ian's weekly
visit with the Athletics. Stuart Mandel brought to you by
Ben Holiday Bourbon. This football season, team up with a
glass of Ben Holliday Bourbon. This real Missouri bourbon bottled
in bab represents the perfect union of distilling tradition and
modern day production. On the rocks are in a cocktail.
(13:32):
Pick up a bottled today must be twenty one. Please
enjoy responsibly now. Stuart Mandel on your Home for College
Football Saturdays, Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
All right, here we go Stuart Mandel weekly visits and man,
oh man, is there stuff to talking about again? It
feels like more and more every week. Stewart. We're talking
about stuff off the field, in terms of coaching, moves
on all that stuff and on the field. But first
of all, how are you, my friend?
Speaker 6 (14:00):
Yeah, I'm good. I was at a bowling alley with
my daughter Sunday when the news came down that Brian
Kelly got fired.
Speaker 7 (14:06):
So it never.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
Ends, I laughed, because you guys do. We've talked about
the Audible, the great podcast you guys do, and the
fun thing about that is you know what you tap
it on Sunday mornings and a way you go and
I think one of you guys mentioned maybe it's time
not to do it Sundays, because I don't know how
many straight Sundays you've had news break. Later on that
particular day, the Brian Kelly stuff with LSU, you saw
that coming. I think everyone kind of saw that coming,
(14:27):
So maybe when you were the bowling alley you weren't
totally surprised. I want to before I get to him
and everything else. Bigger picture is this, is this a
trend of today's college football with a Power four structures
opposed to Power five and il money less patients from boosters.
I mean, it just feels like this year is nuts
in terms of the coaches and high profile programs getting
(14:49):
let go.
Speaker 6 (14:51):
You know what I tell people is the expectations have
always been not Coaches have always been fired, you know,
sometimes guys that you know you thought had no business
getting fired. What's changed is the money, obviously, And it
used to be that firing your coach in the middle
of the season was rare, And then I would say
(15:11):
about four years ago. I remember when Clay Halton got
fired two games into the season and Scott Frost got
fired like three or four games in the season. That
was really the first time I remembered that happening, and now.
Speaker 7 (15:24):
It's just an expectation.
Speaker 6 (15:25):
It went quickly from rarity to you know what, why
haven't you fired your coach yet?
Speaker 7 (15:30):
Right? And so.
Speaker 6 (15:33):
In a previous era, you know, even if people thought
Brian Kelly's probably done, you just let it, let it
play off the season. Now it's you know, how fast
can we how fast can we get his keys back?
After the way that Texas A and M game went?
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Well, let's let's look at his specific situation for a second.
They bring him in from Notre Dame. Does l s
U it's already to me, my perception of l s
U is it's a program with a lot, a lot
of patience. I mean, Ed o'geron won a championship and
they got rid of him. What two years later they
bring Kelly in, who hadn't won a championship. Is this
at all in LSU problem or is it just they
(16:09):
haven't found the right coach problem?
Speaker 6 (16:13):
Well, you know, everybody brings up obviously the last three
coaches won a national title, and they won it by
their fourth year, And so I think the problem here
wasn't just that he hadn't won one.
Speaker 7 (16:23):
It's that they were going in the wrong direction.
Speaker 6 (16:25):
Really, the best team he had was his first one
that won ten games and beat Alabama.
Speaker 7 (16:31):
And went to the SEC championship game.
Speaker 6 (16:33):
And then each year after that it wasn't like they
fell apart, but they seemed to be further from that
being a contender now going into this season, Brian Kelly
himself was not shy about saying, hey, we tripled the payroll.
Speaker 7 (16:48):
We're all in.
Speaker 6 (16:48):
You know, we're ending for the national championship. So to
get to this point in the season and they're already
out of playoff contention and their offense is terrible. I
think at that point everybody realized this just isn't going
to happen.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Stue Madel join us from the Athletic Audible podcast as well.
Can you refresh all of our memories out here? Because
and mostly because you know, he took a shot at
my school, so I'm a huge fan of Scott Woodward.
What is Scott How is Scott Woodward? What's what's the
bank roll right now that he's had to pay or
you know he's been involved with with former coaches between
and M and lsu.
Speaker 7 (17:21):
Okay, shoot.
Speaker 6 (17:22):
I don't have the exact figure in front of me,
but the key to note that he gave out the
two he made the two hires of the two coaches.
Speaker 7 (17:30):
Who ended up having the biggest.
Speaker 6 (17:31):
Buyouts ever paid, jimbo Fisher and now Brian Kelly. And
so a lot of people have said, how does he
still have a job And the answer is they don't
have a president right now.
Speaker 7 (17:42):
L s U is in between presidents. They're supposed to hire.
Speaker 6 (17:45):
One soon, and I just I don't know how you
hold onto a guy who now people that are in
his corner will point out he hired Kim Mulki. He
hired the baseball coach who's won two World Series already, right,
so credit for that. But when you hear about, especially
from Bruce, about what was going on Sunday, where the
(18:05):
AD is trying to dictate to the coach which who
he has to fire, and the coach is coming back
and saying, okay, well, if you're going to make me
fire the OC, then I'm going to fire the offensive
line coach.
Speaker 7 (18:14):
Well no, no, no, no, no, that's my buddy. You can't
fire him. It's just not a healthy dynamic.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
That's weird. The guy that made the infamous phrase, Jess,
remember that one haves and have nots. And I guess
if you're a have, you can just keep writing big
checks and tell until the what is it? The dean
of agriculture school is no longer the president of the
infim president than that new guy might come in and say, hey,
wait a second, what's going on here? All right, Stuart?
All these you wrote about it. I think it's a
(18:41):
fascinating topic because you know, I was talking to our
Midday guy, MJ in the mid Day, who's a big
college fan in Miami guy too about this the other day.
How many other jobs are going to open up in
college football in power for conferences and how many should
open up? Because you wrote about it, the pool of
what you would can considered to be high profile or
(19:02):
big time qualified coaches or the guys that are ready
to make that next move may not be that deep.
Speaker 6 (19:09):
It's already at nine Power four schools. I wouldn't be
surprised to get the fifteen between some that I think
are pretty certain like Wisconsin, Michigan State, like I think
you can pretty much count those already, and then you've
got some that are on the Fence, Kentucky, Auburn, maybe Baylor,
some of those will open up, and then of course
(19:30):
there'll be a domino effect.
Speaker 7 (19:31):
Right.
Speaker 6 (19:32):
You know, if somebody really does hire Lane Kiff and
then all miss comes open, maybe fifteen is undershooting it,
to be honest, because you just you can't predict.
Speaker 7 (19:39):
All the ripple effects.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
That's incredible.
Speaker 7 (19:43):
And no, there are not enough good coaches to go
around for those jobs.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
They're just unless you start going down the road of coordinators, right.
I mean, I think I think it is you that
talked about it on the audible, which I think is
an interesting thing. In today's world. You want to hire
the name, right like Link Kiff, and everyone you know
LSU or Florida might want to hire Lane Kiffin. If
if Jed Fish ends up finishing strong at Washington this year,
(20:08):
his name will be will be thrown out there as
a guy rebuilt Arizona came in. I mean, he didn't
have to rebuild Washington by any stretch of the imagination,
but he had success and you know, and maybe didn't
equal what Kaln did, but he would have success at Washington.
He'd be a name guy. But as you pointed out,
there's a lot of guys out there in the top
ten right now have programs in the top ten that
were not named guys that got hired and have had
(20:30):
great success. I mean, it's got to be a balancing
act right now for these colleges because you're paying big
money and your boosters want instant results, and they probably
want to have a guy they can hang their hat
on name wise, but maybe it's better to go down
the road of a lesser name that's had success as
a coordinator. It's part of a tree, what have you.
Speaker 6 (20:48):
Yeah, it's you know, these ads love to flex, they
love to go a show off, like look, I got
Brian Kelly to come, I got Lintern Riley to come.
And then you look at the top ten. Number one,
o'h have state. Ryan Day was a coordinator.
Speaker 7 (21:01):
Kurt Signette, nobody knew who that was.
Speaker 6 (21:03):
Mike Elko had only been a head coach for two years.
You know, Dan Lanning was a coordinator, and right on
down the list Vanderbilt Clark.
Speaker 7 (21:10):
Lee was a coordinator. The problem is it's really hard
to project those. You know, there's a.
Speaker 6 (21:15):
Million offensive and defensive coordinators and running backs coaches, and
how do you know if they're ready to be a
head coach or not. You know, I give Rob Mullins
at Oregon a lot of a lot of credit because
Dan Lanning was the DC of a national championship team,
but nobody knew much about.
Speaker 7 (21:31):
Him the young guy.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
You know.
Speaker 7 (21:34):
I don't know if it was that he ated.
Speaker 6 (21:35):
The interview or the you know, the you call, the
references and whatnot. So the smartest thing that these ads
can do is not get caught up and who the
name is and who's the best drive for the job.
And I think Kurt Signetti has woken a lot of
people up to the fact that there's something to be
said for a guy who might not be a big
name but has won everywhere they've been, you know, from
(21:55):
from STS or Division two. I think he actually started
in all the way up the end of work.
Speaker 7 (22:01):
At that profile.
Speaker 6 (22:02):
So the only the only way this works this coming
cycle is if some people are willing to take a
chance on some of those names.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
I wonder. I wonder, if you're a coach and you're
in a decent situation, if you're better off staying there.
And I know money comes into play, Although you know,
I did like Lane Kiffin's I never made a decision
based on money. Really, well, you're the only person in
America that hasn't fella. But that's fine. I mean, of course,
no one's made it. Come on, if that was the case,
(22:32):
you'd be coaching D three right now. You wouldn't care
about money, right, You'd just be going out and for
the love of the game. But the I wonder if
guys like Lane Kiffin where they're the expectations that Ole
miss are not high. I mean, like, if you get
if you're a top ten program, if you're contending in
the SEC, you can probably you know, be there for
a long time. Jed might fit in that same category
at Washington. I know that Husky fans don't want to
(22:54):
hear that, but it's listen, LSU and Florida have different expectations, right,
I think it's safe to say they have different expectations
where they're program is and they want, as you said,
within years three or four national championship. What if these
coaches are better off just staying where they are. They
probably are all going to milk more money out of
their schools in the end, right with contract extensions and
what have you. I just wonder if you're better off staying.
If you have a good situation, if you've built a program,
(23:15):
I'm just stay there.
Speaker 6 (23:18):
Diarny of Langkiff, I'm saying he hasn't done anything for money.
Is that if you've noticed, he hasn't shot down anything.
Speaker 7 (23:23):
About these coaching rumors right.
Speaker 6 (23:25):
He's he's making sure to keep his options open because
you're right, like, if he gets Florida and LSU coming
after him, he can get he can.
Speaker 7 (23:33):
Leverage that into a nice, big race. I think he
is going.
Speaker 6 (23:37):
To be kind of a test case if you will
intwer this new landscape, because I think in his case
there is something to be said for what if Florida
and el if you have that, we don't right now
like we can we can. They're in top ten in
the country right now. They have been for several years
in a row. They have great NIL support, and they're
(23:58):
not you know, ole Miss fans are not at a
place yet to be like, well like what Brian Kelly
did at LSU that got him fired would be.
Speaker 7 (24:05):
Fine it all miss.
Speaker 6 (24:06):
So now, these coaches, though, do strive to reach the
top of their profession. And I'm sure for somebody like
Line Kiffin who got fired at USC once upon the time.
The idea of going to one of those blue bloods
is probably pretty appealing. He turned out Auburn a few
years ago. I don't consider Auburn and blue blood certainly
pored an LSU R. So it's easy for us on
(24:28):
the outside to say, oh, you got a pretty good
situation there, stay there. But you know, that'd be like
if somebody had told me, you know, if I was
very happy writing for a newspaper somewhere and they said,
I don't know, you can make a lot more money
if you go to the Sports Illustrated or the Athletic
and I don't do it for money. I'm fine here, right,
that's the that's their profession, like they're they're striving to
(24:49):
get to the top of their profession, as we all are.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
Stuart Mandel joining us all right on the field. By
the time we talk next week, we'll have our first
college football playoff rankings out right now in the top
AP top twenty five. And I know they don't necessarily
reflect what's gonna happen on Tuesday, but there's five SEC teams,
there's three Big ten teams among the top twelve. If
we look through there, then you've got Notre Dame obviously independent,
(25:16):
Miami is in there, which is as we all know,
and Georgia Tech two ACC teams BYU I believe right
is the only Big twelve team. So we start looking
through this. What are they looking at this year? Is
their strength to schedule and how does that work? Because
I'm still mystified by the fact that Washington's not ranked
in the top twenty five. They looked awful against Michigan.
(25:36):
For sure, they got their doors blown off by Ohio State,
especially in the second half of Ohio State kind of
put the gas pedal down. But they had a nice
one over Illinois along the way. But so what are
these You know, if you're a Big twelve team, you're
Texas Tech, you're seven to one, you're kind of the
outside looking in at thirteen again in the A people,
what are these guys going to be looking at on Tuesday?
Speaker 6 (25:55):
Well, we're gonna find out if the committee truly starts
with a blank canvas, because what I see a lot
of right now on the eight people is that even
though we're into week ten, preseason rankings are still baked
into them.
Speaker 7 (26:05):
That's the only reason Tennessee is.
Speaker 6 (26:07):
Number fourteen in the country having beaten nobody of substance,
and then you mentioned Washington. I mean, I think part
of the problem for Washington is they played two really
high profile games and lost them by.
Speaker 7 (26:19):
You know, only score seven points. But they also weren't.
Speaker 6 (26:21):
In the preseason rankings if if I'm correct, So that's
why you know, for instance, they're not in it. But
Texas is right, so does the committee start with a
points play? If they do, I think you could see
a little more love for the Big twelve because the
UYU and Texas Tech are both the computers are very
(26:42):
high on both of them, actually.
Speaker 7 (26:43):
Pretty high on Utah as well. Not that they're going
to be up in the top ten.
Speaker 6 (26:48):
But the computers love those SEC teams, they sure do.
And you know, I think what you're looking at right now,
if you had to project it forward, I think the
Big Task probably only a three bid league this year,
and I think the SEC is at least four. And
so then the question is does the SEC gets a
five or can the Big twelve or ACC get a
second team in I think the first committee rankings won't
(27:11):
necessarily give us.
Speaker 7 (27:13):
That much clarity on it.
Speaker 6 (27:14):
But yeah, again, interested to see I'm always interested in
the first one to see who is higher or lower
than in the a people.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
So so go back some Big ten. You think three
teams total is what you're thinking?
Speaker 7 (27:27):
Yeah, I mean, and you can and you can name them.
Speaker 6 (27:29):
Right now, there is an interesting swing game, I would
say in the Big Ten. Next week Oregon is going
to Iowa.
Speaker 7 (27:36):
Iowa has been quietly a lot better this year. They
do have the two very close bosses.
Speaker 6 (27:42):
And Oregon, you know, they're very good. But now that
win at Penn State isn't quite as dramatic as you
thought it would be. Obviously, Indiana handled them in Eugene,
and then I'm watching a little bit that game the
other day.
Speaker 7 (27:54):
What is going on?
Speaker 6 (27:55):
How come Oregon can't can't score against Wisconsin? I realized
it was a weird weather game, and.
Speaker 7 (28:01):
Then Donte More got knocked out.
Speaker 6 (28:03):
So I still think we're going to make the playoff,
but they're not quite as like we can the Ohio
State and Indiana can go ahead and book their reservations
right now.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
Yah, Oregon is interesting to me because like at Iowa
and then the Minnesota should be an easy win on
I think that's a Friday if I'm not mistaken. And
then you've got USC at home and then at Washington,
Like if they lose, I mean, first off, Washington beats
him and Washington runs the table. Does that not put
(28:32):
Washington in the mix?
Speaker 5 (28:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (28:36):
I think it certainly would. I don't have I think
Washington can get to nine three. I don't have that
much confidence they can run the table, just because of
what we've seen in the US State machine games, even
when they went to Maryland and had to make a
big comeback there. They're a good team. I just I
don't know that they're a playoff caliber team. But the
scenario where Oregon falls out of it, you're right, would
(28:57):
you lose at Iowa and then you lose to walk
ten at the end, which could happen. But that's again
why I say the big ten. I don't see them
getting more than three teams in which and then that Yeah.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
No Nebraska six and two? Like what about Nebraska? Are
they do they have an outside chance? Nebraska? They're the
same record Nebraska.
Speaker 7 (29:17):
Got killed by Minnesota.
Speaker 6 (29:19):
What the game before this one? Like they'll they'll end
up going four. You know, Michigan though, is sitting there
at six and two? That was that was a good
win over Washington, and then obviously that'll come down to
them and I'll come down to the OOT game once again.
Speaker 2 (29:34):
Almost sounds like as opposed to Washington getting in. If
or if they beat Oregon at the end, and maybe
Oregon stumbles along the way, that may pave the way
for what couple ACC teams. I mean, Georgia textiting there.
Obviously Miami feels like they're going to get in. I
would think maybe that paves away for an extra Big
twelve team.
Speaker 6 (29:53):
The the ACC with those two teams in particular, have
going for them. Miami has a great non conference when
Nerdame and another pretty good one over USF. That helps
their cause. Georgia Tech plays Georgia at the end of
the year, right, so even if they stumble in the ACC,
that they beat Georgia, I think they get an at
large bid.
Speaker 7 (30:12):
The problem for the Big twelve.
Speaker 6 (30:13):
Teams is they don't They didn't beat anybody in the
non conference and in fact have some pretty like it's
not good for the Big Twelve. The Arizona State, one
of their better teams, lost to one of the worst
teams in the SEC. You know, Cincinnati is I think
their third highest ranked team. They lost in Nebraska, so
that's going to hurt them in terms of trying to
get two teams.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
I mean, I love the theater, to be honest with you,
I mean I think I think Pittsburgh's an interesting case
study as well, right as is Louisville. Those two teams
are both interesting down the stretch and what they could do.
Pittsburgh's got to won against Notre Dame, right they got
they got a game against Notre Dame. That would be
huge if they were to beat Notre Dame. I like
it estrama. I love people complaining about the polls and
all that stuff. You know what we do. We're complaining.
(30:55):
We're also docking. We're discussing, and it makes the games
on the weekends even more fun. Or tell everyone about
what's going on with the audible and you guys had
I think, if I'm not mistaken an emergency session the
other day, right after the Brian Kelly.
Speaker 7 (31:07):
Firing, we did not have an emergency session.
Speaker 6 (31:11):
We're basically knowing what was probably coming, just treated it
as inevitable. In the Sunday morning show, so we have
a Sunday morning show. We joke about maybe we should
push it back at Sunday night, but you know people
want to hear about the games the day before, so
the audible is live on Sunday mornings on YouTube at
Audible Show. All the episodes are on YouTube, but also
(31:32):
obviously wherever we get podcasts Sunday Tuesday Thursday.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
You guys do a great job with it. Also you
can read Stuart's wrap up of the games on Saturday
in The Athletic and then also the mail bag comes
out middle of the week, which is fantastic as well.
Do you guys do a great job you Ralph and
everyone Bruce at the Athletic. It's the best college football
coverage out there and I love just immersing myself in it.
I appreciate your time this week. We will talk next
week and we'll have a college football playoff pool to
(31:58):
discuss my friend.
Speaker 7 (31:59):
Thank you, looking forward to it. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
There you go, Stuart Mandel joining us here. We'll do
a daily power play coming up next. We're at Seahawk
Headquarters day the Virginia Mason Athletics Center getting ready for
the Commander's game on Sunday night. Football ninety three point
three k FM.
Speaker 5 (32:35):
Don.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
Smart and here said look back for no Man Peas Gone.
Speaker 8 (32:43):
This is the daily power Play Hockey.
Speaker 1 (32:50):
On your home for the Kraken Sports Radio ninety three
point three k j r f M. The daily power
Play is brought to you by he'sa Kwahonda Caboda, the
Wi just inventory of Caboda equipment and Kinge County. Now
your daily look at the National Hockey League and the
(33:10):
Seattle Kraken with the inf nets.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
All right, daily power playing your hope for the Kracking
nine three point three k DFM getting brought to you
by a Squahana Caboda Kracket. Last night, losing in overtime
but getting to overtime was a feat in itself. Trailing
three nothing with eleven minutes and three seconds left, Brenda
mon Tour basically took the game over. He had two goals,
including the first and the third game time goal inside
(33:35):
of two minutes left to go, about one thirty left
to go in the game to force the overtime. Kracking
badly outplayed in the first period, got a little better
in the second period, and then sounds like there was
a little bit of some paint being peeled off the walls,
maybe by Lane Lambert in the between the second and
third periods, and they came out with a little more uh,
a little more little more spice, a little more jam
(33:57):
as they say, and cranked it up. And then they
got they got going and ended up getting that a
four to three loser point as they call it, but
they got the point. And I tell you right now,
if you would have told me after forty minutes last
night that they were going to get one point out
of that game, I would have said, we'll take it
right now and walk away. And they did just that,
cracking now five two and three on the season, thirteen
(34:18):
points two behind Vegas in the Pacific Division, and it's
massively early, ten games in. But here's why those points
in those even even the shootout loss or an overtime
loss like last night, are important. The way the West
is stacking up right now, you just cannot afford to
fall too far behind. I'm looking at you, Calgary with
your two eight and one record. San Jose, nobody expected
(34:40):
you to be good. You're awful. Saint Louis three six
and one, Minnesota three five and three. And while those
teams are all within shouting distance point wise, this this
entire Western Conference, top to bottom, is separated by if
you go the top team in the West, which right
now now is Utah, sick of them already. If you
(35:03):
go to Utah and you drop down to the fifth
place team out of the number five team out of
the wildcard, that's only a five point six point difference
three games. It's just a lot of I don't want
to call it parody, but it's very balanced in the West.
West is good, very competitive. Every point matters in a way.
You go cracking through ten games, sitting there with the
best start in franchise history, and make no mistake, they're
(35:25):
a better team. Next up they take on the Rangers,
the Blue Shirts of New York. Will Morgan returns coming
up on Saturday. That, by the way, at Climate Plagerina
will be the first time the Kraken where their new
third alternate jerseys.
Speaker 3 (35:37):
Ooh, are they better than the Seahawks?
Speaker 2 (35:41):
What were the Seahawks?
Speaker 4 (35:43):
Oh no, remember we had a field day with that
because it looked too much like Oregon.
Speaker 3 (35:48):
Oh god, when are they wearing those.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
Seahawks third jersey?
Speaker 3 (35:52):
Yeah jersey?
Speaker 2 (35:53):
When are they wearing those? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (35:54):
And then definitely better again the Steelers.
Speaker 2 (35:57):
That's right, it's the Rams game that's what it is.
It is the crack in jerseys. By the way, I've
got to say this on TV, so I gotta practice
it right now.
Speaker 4 (36:04):
Oh okay, three two one bile luminescence.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Oh biolelce. I actually do like that or whatever the style. Yeah,
tune in for pure comedy watching and do that on on.
Speaker 4 (36:19):
That Noescence is a very cool thing that we rarely
get to witness in our region, but it is very cool.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
It's what is it? Do you know what it is? Oh?
Speaker 4 (36:30):
Yeah, it's a It's a luminant algae. Then, so movement
actually makes them illuminate.
Speaker 3 (36:37):
I'm a nerd dude.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
Well listen, you didn't have to tell me that. I
knew that. I love you for being our herd. But
that's okay. So bioluminescence. I'll be reading that on Saturday.
So if you want to be.
Speaker 3 (36:48):
Hard to say I I think you'll nail it.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
Okay, we'll see between Russian and Slovakian and check names
and bioluminescence. This is a hard gig. I gotta, I gotta.
I don't know how you go. I think I just
need to go back to football, a much easier all right,
yea speaking, which will Jaron read Cooper Cup much easier?
We'll we'll check it Wolf Gray for a jersey color? Right,
(37:13):
isn't it Wolf Gray? We can do that. It is
four nine four to five one. Is the unrestricted free
agent text line? Yes, still unrestricted free agent text line
four nine four five one. Text your thoughts, comments, questions
and concernsdy. We'll get to those. We've got a Factor
fiction pick coming up at two thirty five. That's my
pick today and coming up next, Mike Hongrid joins the
show for his weekly visit on ninety three point three
(37:34):
KTERFM no.
Speaker 1 (37:56):
From the Star Rentals Sports desk. Your ninety three point

Speaker 2 (38:00):
Headlines headlines were brought to you by Frostbrewed Corps, Light, Choose, Chill,
cracking loss to Montreal and overtime last night four to
three Brenda mon Tour two goals and assists, three points,
all in the third period, cracking trail three to nothing
with eleven minutes to go. So they earn a point somehow,
some way out of that game. Next up, a few
days off before they put on the alternate third jerseys
and new third jerseys Saturday, night CPA against the New
(38:23):
York Rangers. Cal Rawley what another ward MLBPA Player's Choice
word Player of the Year for the al most Outstanding Player.
World Series once again is all tied up, this time
as two to Toronto beat the Dodgers six to two.
Last night, Blue Jays a four run seventh inning to
get the win. Vladimir Guerrero Juniors at a franchise record
(38:45):
for the most postseason home runs. His seventh Tuesday Night
a two run shot gave his team the lead in
the third inning. NFL Lions locked up defensive end Aiden
Hutchinson into a four year contract with one hundred and
eighty million dollars. One hundred and forty one is guaranteed.
Seahawk News today, we had seen an injury port YEP.
Mike McDonald did tell us a while ago that there
is a possibility that Love could Julian Love could go
(39:06):
on the injured reserve list. That would not be good.
But Witherspoon expected back and Derek Hall expected back. This
week they play Sunday Night Football against the Commanders in
Washington five point twenty on the primetime game Let's get
to It. Mike ole Grin standing by.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
As part of our NonStop coverage of the NFL. Your
home for the twelfth Man proudly presents former Seahawks head
coach and Super Bowl champion Mike Holmgren, brought to you
by Toyota of Kirkland. The championship team at Toyota of
Kirkland does all the little things that exceed your expectations,
and that's what makes Toyota of Kirkland so special. And
(39:43):
by R and R Foundation specialist serving Western Washington for
over twenty years now, Mike Holmgren with the inverness.
Speaker 2 (39:54):
Mike Olgrin joins us as weekly visit. I'm sitting here
at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center today, house that Mike
holm Grin built literally with his bare hands. I know,
I know, with some heavy lifting. I mean, we saw
you out here on the shores of Lake Washington picking
up those two boys two by fours, houlowing around here.
Speaker 5 (40:15):
You go, oh, yeah, he did a hell of a job.
Speaker 2 (40:17):
Mike did a hell of a job.
Speaker 5 (40:19):
I think, yeah, yeah, it did.
Speaker 2 (40:21):
It turned out nice. This place is great. Mike McDonald
was telling a story earlier about he met Dan Quinn
years ago when Dan was coaching out here and he
was a d C and he was Mike McDonald was
a grad assistant. I think it was a Georgia and
mutual friend introduced him and you know, DQ said, come
on out. I'll I'll walk you around and we'll talk
for a little bit. And he said he walked into
(40:42):
the building for the first time and was just in awe.
Mike McDonald said that walked in and I mentioned this
to our listeners. I mean, we're lucky we had to
come out here. This is work for us coming in here.
But the building is spectacular. I mean, you guy, I
don't know what went into the design. I know you
and Tyler Wicky and Paul Allen, everybody kind of had
your saying it. But the design of the building, walking
into the lobby and everything, it's Mike, it's spectacular. It
(41:04):
really is.
Speaker 5 (41:05):
No, it's it's a great it's a great building. The
The only thing I would have done differently is that
I would have had the office that Ruskal took down
at the end. Yeah, I had a good office, but
I would have had that one because then when I left,
Pete switched that around with John Schneider and now John
Schneider Pete so longer there. He moved into that office.
So but I'm not I'm not complaining. I've forgotten about it.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
Well, like a lot of things during that last couple
of years with with the unnamed GM and the team. Yeah,
I noticed you forgot about all of that.
Speaker 5 (41:36):
I forgot. Yeah, it just sticks with you a little,
that's all.
Speaker 2 (41:39):
Well, that's just a little bit. Hey, I want to
ask you something though, that was interesting. We've talked about before,
you know, building a culture in for a for a
football team. And when McDonald was telling the story today
about Dan Quinn and I don't know if you ever
had much interaction with Dan at all over the years,
but you know, everyone seems to have great respect for him.
(42:00):
And one of the things he said that stuck out
to him was that when he came here and he's
meeting with Dan and he's just kind of and he
was just networking. There was no job available or anything
like that. He was a young, you know, grat assistant
at the time. So gosh, gosh, what have that had been.
That's like eighteen years ago, seventeen years whenever it would
have been. Yeah, and he's walking around but he said
The thing that stuck with him is that Dan he
(42:22):
knew everybody in the building by name, uh and no
matter what level of employment they had or what their
title was, he knew everybody by name. And then on
top of that that the players had this great reverence
for him, or like a relationship that seemed to be
really deep. I think we still see that. How how
important is if you're building a culture as a head
(42:44):
coach or even just as any coach. How important is
it to Mike? And I'm gonna start, I'm gonna get
to the players in a second. Let me separate this,
Let me separate players and staff. How important is it
and how important was it to you to walk in
and know who you know the receptionist is, or who
the person is it's helping park cars or things like that,
or was that important at all?
Speaker 5 (43:04):
No? I think I think hit the nail on the head.
I think that's hugely important for the whole building. In fact,
one of my former workers, Mark Schieffel binding Green Bay,
who then was with me in Seattle and also in Cleveland,
we just had lunch today and we were telling stories
and going into Cleveland, where I was the president as
(43:26):
an example, you know, I wasn't able to stay long
enough to get the football right, but in my brief
time there, we did change the culture. You know, people
were smiling, they were they had a little jump in
their step when they came to work, and I think
that's really important. I think it's really important. And then
carrying over to the football players, you know, they just
(43:46):
have to know, they have to have that same feeling
and open themselves up not only to their teammates but
people in the building. And it helps, it really helps.
And so I think that's an important part of any
organization's success.
Speaker 2 (44:02):
I think. I mean people asked me before, you know,
why why the cracking have made a couple of coaching changes,
not the last one, but the previous one was because
that didn't exist, I know with with hack and I
know for Liwikie it was important to have that. I
think it is important. I think it's you know, I
think to know, you know who else is in the building.
I think, you know, if you're selling tickets or you're
(44:24):
you know, selling the luxury suite or whatever, if you
feel some sort of connection to the team, it's probably
more personal for you, right' it's you were the president
of the team, So you had to oversee all that
stuff when you were in Cleveland.
Speaker 5 (44:34):
Right, Well, that's right, and you encourage people, you know.
I remember the people that cooked the meals there had
been working for the Browns, as an example, for maybe
fifteen years, and they worked hard and they cooked the
meals for everybody. They'd never seen a game, and so
I invited them all and they sat in my box
(44:54):
one Sunday and they ever after that, they couldn't thank
me enough. They was smiling on their is the little
things like that that make a big difference in people's lives.
And you say, well, you gotta yeah, but you got
a football team to coach, You got to you got
this to do that. You're thinking about salary cap, yes
you are, but you also if you're the leader or
(45:16):
you're trying to create something that works, you got to
do those little things as well and think about it.
Speaker 2 (45:24):
How does it work, Mike, I mean with let's go
to the player side for a second. How does it work?
What's the balance? And how do you find the balance?
And maybe you didn't find it right away, maybe it
took a couple of years. Maybe it's it's just an
ongoing project. But how do you find the balance? And again,
this is what you know when McDonald's talking about Dan
quinn in the relationship he had with with his players
(45:44):
and how it just jumped out at him. Uh, and
I think you had that. And I don't think I
know you had that because you know, I know, you
know your relationship with guys like Reggie White, the late
Reggie White or uh, you know ct bratt On, you
know the guys in Green Bay, And I know what it's.
I know the relationship you have, the reverence that guys
here had for you, whether it be Robbie or Matt.
They joke about it all the time and busting your
(46:05):
chops and back and forth. But they can't do that
without great respect and a great reverence for you, as
you know, coach Holmgren. But how do you find the
balance between having that relationship and also being the coach
and having to be at times the hammer? Like how
hard is that balancing actor? Where do you find it?
Speaker 5 (46:25):
Well that that's the challenge, that's the challenge that every
coach in the National Football League or college has to
find out and balance and figure it out, because it's
not easy. You know, you have to be firm, you
have to set rules. Sometimes you have to get mad,
but they have to leave the field knowing that the
(46:49):
bottom line is you care about them, You care about
their families. And how you get to do that while
still maintaining a certain toughness in a certain way you
want things to operate. That's that's that's what has to happen,
and that's why you see, uh, you know teams that
just never quite get over the hump and they have
to make it. They well, we'll make a coaching change.
(47:12):
But it's not just the coach, it's the entire building,
it's the I always said in Green Bay as an example,
Ron Wolf and I you know, he was my boss,
but he allowed me. I was involved in every decision
and we didn't argue about things. We didn't argue about things.
We saw the same vision. And you look around the
league in out you see teams that are struggling. I
(47:35):
don't think it's there that's missing and the players. Doesn't
take long for the players they to figure that out.
So and then the last thing I'd say is you
always operate. And I pull this to the players. Many
times you operate from a position a mutual respect players
to coaches. Coaches to coaches, coaches the players, you just
(47:56):
you might not agree with them, but you respect their
position what they're trying to do. And I think if
you believe that and can make them believe it, then
you got something going.
Speaker 2 (48:06):
Did you ever have a point where it was like
a kind of a wake up caller, like, oh, I
got to change my ways, or maybe you were watching
someone else was that you worked for, that was a
head coach and said, well, that's that's not the way
I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it differently. I
mean what because I mean I think you've talked about it.
You've you evolved as a coach from when you first
got to Green Bay. Heck with the media guys, You
and the media guys had to evolve along the way
(48:26):
right to where you had that mutual respect and understanding.
And I mean, I know when I first got here No. Six,
I was I I've told you this story. I was flabbergast.
I said, that's Mike Holngren. He said, legend, this big,
huge man. That's that's just an imposing, you know figure
that is one of the best in the business. You know,
et cetera. And he treats everybody with such great respect,
like you knew you had to know every I don't
(48:47):
know if people know this. You wanted to know everybody's
name in the press conferences like you wanted to know
everybody's name. And I just I always I found that
amazing because I cover been in the business for a
long time, and you know, I, did you ever have
a moment where you had to kind of check yourself?
Speaker 5 (49:03):
I kind of remember what the name was, Yeah, no,
it's it's uh. I learned that from Bill Watsh too.
I mean, you know, you as you as you move,
as you move.
Speaker 7 (49:12):
Up the.
Speaker 5 (49:14):
Road, you know there are things that you say. I
kept lists. That was a pretty good student. I said,
if I ever become a head coach, I'm not going
to do that. That that that I don't like that.
I can't tell him that now, but I'm not going
to do that. And then so I had these lists
of things I would do, things that wouldn't do. Then
you become you get the job, and then you realize
(49:35):
that why he did some of those things, why he
acted that way, and and and you say, okay, now
I understand, and I refer look at I refer to
the quarterbacks, both Matt and Steve Young and and and
uh Brett Farv and those guys. They all of them
(49:56):
came up to my seat in the plane one after
some games and say, Mike, I finally get it. I
get it. I go good. Now we can now we
can move forward. You know. So sometimes it takes a
little time, but you have to be consistent and you
have to operate from mutual respect.
Speaker 2 (50:14):
I got tell I gotta tell a story. I've told this.
It's been a while since I told the story in there,
but I gotta tell the story because I don't know.
You probably don't remember this, but I got to Kjar
in two thousand and six, and in it's probably mid September.
I got here and I'm coming back to my hometown.
I've been working in Portland for the previous a few years,
Salt Lake before that. But I got back and I'm
(50:35):
doing the night show with the least Woodward and my
family hadn't moved up here yet, and I just said,
I got immerse myself back in Seattle sports and try to,
you know, do the job the way it should be done,
like get out, and I'd come to your practices at
least twice a week, your Wednesday news conference, Thursday practice.
I'd get sound for the show, talk to you know,
and all that stuff and just kind of grinding is
(50:56):
a I don't do that anymore, by the way, Mike,
that's I'm here today.
Speaker 5 (50:59):
But you know it's kind of but no, but now
you're famous.
Speaker 2 (51:05):
No, we go that far, but I try to do.
You know, I wanted to do the job. And I
remember going the press conference, and that's when I first
noticed like you knew everybody's name. And I remember sitting
there a week or two before I asked a question,
and but I'd ask a couple of questions here there
because I wanted stuff for the show. Like I said,
I need to sound by talking about this because Alisa
and are going to talk about that that night. Get
Mike to do that. And you answered a question once.
(51:26):
I didn't catch it. Apparently you called me by the
wrong name, and and I think Dave Pearson or somebody
said to you, No, his name's Ian. He's a new
guy at kJ R. The next day at practice, Mike, again,
I don't expect you to remember this, but the next
day at practice, you guys are in the bubble out
at Northwest College and we're out there and the practice
is over, and the players would leave and the coaches
(51:48):
would leave, and then the media would leave because there
was like this one for people to know the bubble.
It was like pressurized, right, like you had to go
through like this little thing. It took forever, right. So
we're standing there and I'm kind of at the back
of the media line, the new guy, and all of
a sudden, Dave Pearson and You start walking up to me,
and I'm looking around, going what are they looking for?
And I'm thinking, what did I do? Like did I
(52:08):
do something? And I'm I'm petrified. New guy in town
just started night show at KJR. What's going on? And
they walk up and Dave says Ian Fornass and go
yeah and he said, he says, and you say to me,
He goes, I need to apologize to you. You said
that to me. And I'm just like stumbling on myself,
like what what? And he goes, I called you by
(52:29):
the wrong name yesterday. It's Ian, And I apologize for that.
It'll never happen again. And you shook my hand and
you turned and walked away, and I stood there for
probably a good two minutes, going what just happened? Man,
what just happened? That's Mike Holdrid And I'm coming from
working in Salt Lake where Jerry Sloan would just regularly
(52:49):
yell at me just for fun, like just yell at me.
And you did that, and I thought, this is amazing,
Like this guy, but I thought I had just such
great respect because you you took the time because you
thought you called me by the wrong name. I didn't
even notice it, Mike, and I just thought that was
That's why I ask you about culture, because I think
the respect you have to have for everybody around you
is really important.
Speaker 5 (53:10):
I think it's usually important, and I I'm glad you
brought that up, and I do remember that, and I
I tried to do that and be honest with the
press and to answer questions and not blow up and
uh listen. I will also give a lot of credit
to Gary Wright, one of our you and me, our
favorite guys in the world, who he taught me a
(53:33):
lot of things that you know, every coach that becomes
the head coach thinks. I think for a while, I
think they got all the answers. They figured this thing
out and you don't. You're learning every single day.
Speaker 2 (53:47):
It's a good way to go through life, I think too, honestly.
Just it's respect the people around you that work with you,
and you know, I think I've always felt that out
here at this place. There's no doubt about that. All right,
get some football stuff real quick we go. They are, hey,
how tough is it to manage the injured list? And
I'll ask you for this reason. So Julian love Is
has been out for a few weeks. He suffered what
(54:09):
they called a little bit of a setback. You never
know if it's a setback or it just you know,
maybe he just hasn't progressed, right, Like, he just hasn't progressed,
And they're like, well, now maybe they'll have to put
him on the injured list for it's a four week
thing where they can bring him back. You guys, you
had to do that for all those years, and it
was different back then, right because you guys, I think
if you put a guy in the i R, they
were done for the year. They changed that rule eventually.
(54:31):
How how challenging is that because you're just waiting, right,
And that's that seems to me to be. One of
the hardest things to do is in the NFL, is
like do I put the guy on the list or not?
Speaker 7 (54:39):
What do I do?
Speaker 2 (54:40):
You're waiting and waiting and waiting.
Speaker 5 (54:43):
Well, you have to you have to believe in your
medical staff first of all, and we had a great
one and h but still it's it's it's difficult because
you know, you you I would talk to them on
a daily basis and shoot straight with me, don't sugarcoat anything.
I got to know about this player, and then it's
up to you to evaluate, along with your position coaches
(55:05):
and the coaching staff. You know, is it worth it?
Can we can we use him? Or is he going
to get hurt and we lose them for the season.
I think in this case, you know, he's such an
important player for them that it sounds to me, and
I don't know, I haven't talked to Mike about this,
it sounds to me like you know that they wanted
(55:25):
him to play. He wanted to play, but the doctor said, okay,
he could probably play a little bit, but this could happen.
As soon as you get that this could happen stuff,
then you have to kind of back off and make
good decisions. I think Mike's hope is that you know,
there is playing defense now, and they played it without
him a couple of games and played very well. The
(55:48):
young guys have stepped up that let's keep doing that
and make sure he gets healthy before he comes back.
But that's that's something that you're juggling all season long,
and sometimes it's there are tough decisions. I fired all
the doctors. I didn't get to because I was mad.
Uh they told me, hassle back couldn't play. You told
me he couldn't play. I said, he just practiced today.
(56:11):
Now it's back. He's going to go out. He can't play.
You guys are fired, get out of here and out
of my office. And they were all really good friends
of mine, good doctors. Yeah, but that's how immature I was.
Speaker 2 (56:22):
Yeah, you brought it back thereright, you brought it back
like an hour later.
Speaker 5 (56:25):
Oh yeah. I walked out on the hallway said I stopped,
you know, come on back in here, get in here.
Speaker 2 (56:32):
Hey, I got to ask you a favor. I gotta
ask you one favorite for Yeah, so Halloween Friday, yes,
all right, your favorite holiday? I know, especially when the
famous video of those guys and for you ale to
know a couple of packers. I think it was was
far Of. But who was it who showed up at
your house?
Speaker 5 (56:51):
Well, don Debe, Frank Winners, Mark Shimura and far for
those four.
Speaker 2 (56:55):
So they showed up at your house at trick or
treat you answered the door, yeah, and you didn't recognize
them initially.
Speaker 7 (57:02):
Was Kathy in on that, No she wasn't.
Speaker 5 (57:05):
No, she had. I got home after practice, I was tired,
and then she had done it all day and in
Green Bay, all the ways of every kid in the
in the city, I think, came to our house. And
so then I said, I'll take the rest of it.
You guys done enough. I'll take the last fifteen minutes
because they say it only runs from this to this
then you stop six to eight or some Yeah, it's
(57:28):
very organized, okay, So I said I take the last one.
I went over passed out and little kids. And then
these four guys show up and they're big. I can't
they got masks on and stuff.
Speaker 6 (57:40):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (57:40):
And one guy goes, I want, I want, we want candy,
and I said, she's I'm sorry. You know, I just
gave the last out to the last little guys. You know,
we'll try it again next year. And he goes and
have to be Dombib goes, no, we want candy now,
and I said, no, you got to go. And he
(58:01):
starts stepping into the house and I grabbed him by
the shirt and I'm ready to I don't know what
it was going to do, but I pushed him back.
He stumbles a little bit and all of a sudden,
the light's go on in the front of the house.
Everyone's laughing. They're filming it for television.
Speaker 7 (58:16):
They take the.
Speaker 5 (58:18):
Masks off and they're they're, oh, yeah, I got gee.
You know, but I was.
Speaker 2 (58:24):
I thought Kathy might have been in on that. That's
the only thing I would have thought that she would
have been.
Speaker 5 (58:28):
Oh no, no, no, no, no this. They had to
keep that quiet. They had to keep that very quiet.
But you know, I I go back to that kind
of stuff. Yes, it was hard. I was hard on
those guys. I mean I was hard. Yeah, And yet
they could still do that and they know, I laugh,
and they could do that, you know, they wouldn't get
into trouble and because it was funny and it was good.
(58:52):
And so that's the type of relationship you have to
set up and Mike.
Speaker 2 (58:56):
That's why I brought it up to in the show,
because I thought that was that shows relationship you had
with those guys, that there was mutual respect, but they
also knew they could have fun with coach Holmgren and
have that personal side as well. Uh, I mean, just
it's one of.
Speaker 8 (59:10):
The best things.
Speaker 2 (59:11):
I mean, like, I'm surprised somebody like Tobek didn't try
it over the years with you, like that feels like
something he would have done.
Speaker 5 (59:16):
But it certainly does. It certainly does. Yeah, But you know,
I'm sure that they did. When I took those guys
out when let's say one in the Hall of Fame
and I couldn't go, and I took them to dinner,
they started telling stories I had no idea happened, and
a lot of them was just ripping me and laughing.
They had more fun, just kind of killing me. And
but I loved them. I really did.
Speaker 2 (59:38):
Well, I know, I know you did. Along the way.
By the way, how was the meeting the next day
in the packers meeting room when those guys showed up
when Coach Holmgren walked in for the team meeting, did
you bring it up?
Speaker 5 (59:46):
Oh? No, they had, they held their masks up, they
stood up, they applauded. You know, there was some characters
on that team.
Speaker 2 (59:57):
It's good stuff, but it goes back to that relationship stuff,
which is the best part about it. Mike, thank you
so much. Great to have you on again. Pass out
to be candy this weekend and we'll talk to you
next week. Sir, thank you, Thank you.
Speaker 5 (01:00:07):
Have a good one yourself.
Speaker 2 (01:00:08):
There you go. That's Mike c Longrid love having those
conversations every week with coach. We'll take a break, come
back check the text line. Also, get a factor fiction
in for you coming up next. Where's that to go?
(01:00:49):
Glad you're with us?
Speaker 1 (01:00:50):
It's your shot at our weekly thousand bucks and the
ten thousand dollars grand prize. It's Factor Fiction probably presented
by Lucky Eagle Casino in Hotel where every Day Feels Lucky.
Fact Or Fiction is on Sports Radio ninety three point
three kJ R F M.
Speaker 5 (01:01:13):
All right.
Speaker 2 (01:01:14):
Fact or Fiction is presented by the Lucky Eagle Casino
and Hotel testament. Let me see you here just before
I give my.
Speaker 3 (01:01:22):
Fake Oh, I like the suspense.
Speaker 2 (01:01:25):
Well, I got a double check. Just for some reason,
I want to make sure no no, no, no NFL
game this week. So go college and go to college.
Speaker 3 (01:01:40):
There's just a plethora I have.
Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
And it obviously has not helped me much. I have
kind of gone down the road of a few places
this year in the college route, and I found that
the college game has treated me better than the pro
game as far as my factor fiction picks.
Speaker 3 (01:01:55):
All right, I like where you're going, so.
Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
I'm gonna stick with my Now, I'm going to break
a rule though today my factor fixed. Oh no, before
I give it to you. Before I give it to you,
you'll text fact to four nine four or five one.
If you agree, you'll text fiction to four nine four
to five one. If you disagree, you ask yourself, why
am I gonna do that? Well? You want to win
a thousand dollars weekly prize. We give away one thousand.
Let me emphasize this every single week on a Monday afternoon.
(01:02:22):
I don't know who's doing it next week, though, Andrews
is gone win week. Maybe maybe you have to wait
a week less adjustment does it? Why don't I do
it every Monday? Or maybe you we'll do to the
following Monday, depending on what everyone's schedule is because Andrews
is going to be gone. Anderson Hurst calls somebody and says,
you just want a thousand dollars for playing factors that
(01:02:43):
call yes because you have this pick right. That's what
he does. And all you have to do is get
one pick right and you're randomly entered, and then we'll
randomly pick somebody. You're entered, and then you'll randomly get
picked maybe to win a thousand dollars weekly prize. All
you have to do is have one correct pick now. Also,
remember we are playing for a ten thousand dollar grand
prize at end of the year. People that are playing
for that already know it. They're dialed in, they're ready
(01:03:04):
to go. They're all good. But here's the deal sec
text factor fix into four nine, four to five one
if you agree fact, if you disagree fiction. The rule
I'm gonna break is the following. And sometimes I Basie
sings on talking to my guy Stuart Mandel and you know,
listening to his podcasts and others and watching some games
during the week. I have gone and I have been
(01:03:25):
kind of anti John Matteer moneyline material all year. I've
kind of enjoyed watching Moneyline Materier and ben Arbuckle lose
a couple of games they probably should have won because
of their inability to score in the fourth quarter. Because
I saw that, Jess, you stood on the sideline.
Speaker 5 (01:03:45):
And watch that.
Speaker 3 (01:03:46):
I did see some of that.
Speaker 2 (01:03:48):
Yes, So I've been generally against Oklahoma and John Mattier,
but I'm gonna go with him this week. Okay, I'm
going on.
Speaker 3 (01:03:56):
All right, comes around and he comes around.
Speaker 2 (01:03:59):
They are playing in Knoxville, Tennessee, neil And Stadium, one
hundred thousand people, number eighteen. Oklahoma's playing at number fourteen
Tennessee money line. Materier and our buckle. They're getting three
and a half points, that's plus three and a half.
Keep it within a field goal and I win. I'm
going Oklahoma plus three and a half. Fact four nine
(01:04:23):
four or five one? Hard Because I don't root for him,
I don't mind. Actually I don't mind Matier as much.
I really don't like our buckle.
Speaker 3 (01:04:33):
No, I'm in that category as well. Matier. I find
our buckle to be fake.
Speaker 2 (01:04:42):
Well, you know what's weird is he worked for the
FAKEUS coach. Ever, so that's that's shocking. I Yeah, So
I'm but I'm gonna I think they're gonna cover. And
I think Tennessee. First of all, Tennessee gives up a
lot of points. They give up a lot of points.
I thought about doing the over. I just I that's boring.
I don't go overs. I mean, if I'm doing it
for a parlay or at Mile Betts, fine, but not
(01:05:03):
for factor fiction. But I mean Tennessee gives up points,
and I think Materier, you get one more week, the
thumb should be a little bit better. He can run.
Tennessee's been tested twice, and they've been and they've lost twice.
Georgia and Alabama they're only tests. I mean their wins
are Syracuse, East Tennessee State, UAB, Mississippi State, Arkansas fired
(01:05:24):
a coach, Kentucky may or may not fire their coach. Yeah,
they this And if you know what, I'll tell you this.
If you're a Husky fan, I think you kind of
want Oklahoma to win. You want some of these SEC teams,
like a Tennessee that thinks they can still get in
the playoffs, get himnocked off. So I'm going again Oklahoma
plus three and a half facts four nine four or
five one. If you disagree fiction four nine four five
(01:05:46):
to one text in right now you have about ten
more minutes of text. You cannot win one thousand dollars
unless you text either factor fiction four times a day.
We play at seven thirty five, eleven thirty five, two
thirty five, and three to thirty five with Softy and
Richard L. Fane with Jackson felt so text in right
now four nine four to five one again Oklahoma plus
three and a half. Fact four nine, four or five one.
(01:06:07):
If you disagree fiction four nine four or five one?
Are you you're tied with Jackson? Right? I?
Speaker 3 (01:06:12):
Yeah, I am.
Speaker 4 (01:06:14):
I say that begrudgingly because we are bottom of the barrels.
Speaker 2 (01:06:18):
It happens, you got He's got his pick today, so
we're hoping. We're hoping that you can at least overtake
him along the way.
Speaker 3 (01:06:23):
Yeah, I'd like my pick yesterday.
Speaker 2 (01:06:25):
I say I did too. One more time. It is
Oklahoma plus three and a half. They're getting three and
a half at Tennessee.
Speaker 3 (01:06:33):
Fact for a great pick one, it's a great pick.
Speaker 2 (01:06:37):
Here's a bad thing. I've thought all my picks this year.
Speaker 3 (01:06:38):
Have been great, but I haven't.
Speaker 2 (01:06:42):
So when I say it, okay, well, I appreciate that when.
Speaker 3 (01:06:45):
I say it, maybe it matters.
Speaker 2 (01:06:48):
Well, maybe that's the case. I think I'm sitting at
eight and thirteen. I had a two win. I was
two and oh last week I get two more all
of a sudden ten and thirteen. I like my chances.
I'm coming back, cup. I just need to get to
five hundred. I just need to get to five hundred.
I mean I have I have a larger I have
a larger margin for air as well as wins because
I picked more than it, got picked more than me.
(01:07:10):
He's the only guy picked more than me. So all right,
Factor Fiction brought you by the Lucky Eagle Casino and
Hotel where every day feels lucky. We'll check in with
David Maller. We call him Softy. He joins us next right,
(01:07:32):
He then softly joining us right now?
Speaker 8 (01:07:37):
Where are you? By the way, let me guess.
Speaker 2 (01:07:41):
What I'm in the Uh in the Virginia Mason Athletics Center.
Speaker 8 (01:07:45):
Who do you have on today? From the Virginia Mason
Athletics Center.
Speaker 2 (01:07:49):
We're gonna sit down in a couple of minutes with
Jared Reid from the show. Uh probably tomorrow.
Speaker 9 (01:07:53):
Oh okay, gotcha? I'm gonna say couple minutes. If you
want to keep going, man, go ahead, No.
Speaker 2 (01:07:57):
I'm good, tell you I've got a scheduled was practicing totally,
Darran reed, I'm totally fine. Big J. Reid's gonna roll
in here. Yeah, we'll talk to him about the Seahawks
defense and playing the Commanders of Washington.
Speaker 8 (01:08:10):
Are they Are they number one of the NFL and
run defense right now?
Speaker 2 (01:08:13):
Yeah? By the the by the I mean listen, Is
you listening right now?
Speaker 8 (01:08:18):
Yes? Always always assumed.
Speaker 2 (01:08:21):
Yes, because there's different there's different stats. Right if you
just want to go with what the Seahawks and the
NFL puts out every.
Speaker 9 (01:08:28):
Week, we rush USh go by, well, the ars per carry,
the yards per k, well, they're number one in both
the yards per carry and total yards allowed.
Speaker 2 (01:08:38):
Rush defense seventy five points seven yards of game. Number one.
That's pretty good. That's pretty good.
Speaker 9 (01:08:43):
And they were twenty six last year in the NFL
in yards per carry. Now they're number one in yards
per carry.
Speaker 2 (01:08:49):
Doesn't it feel like we've been complaining about the rush
defense for years and.
Speaker 9 (01:08:53):
Now we're complaining about the rushing offense. I know, we
can't have two things at the same time you get one.
You know what, honestly, it's a great question. Would you
rather be number one of the NFL and run defense
right or number one of the NFL and rushing offense?
Speaker 8 (01:09:10):
Yes, I think kind of mediocre in the other one.
Speaker 2 (01:09:14):
I take where they are right now because I think
I think that the rush offense is negated by how
good the pass and offense? And Sam and say his name,
how do you say it?
Speaker 8 (01:09:25):
Sam Darnold, thank you very much?
Speaker 2 (01:09:27):
And how he and jsanab you know the thing? And
I know that everyone else knew this. I'm the last
guy to the party on this. I did not realize
that Jsn's on pace for almost two thousand yards nineteen
eighty nineties.
Speaker 9 (01:09:39):
On how about him and Jonathan Taylor duking out for
the MVP? Oh, how's that say?
Speaker 2 (01:09:45):
You know I'm in? I'm in? Yeah? Well so, yeah,
Shawn's the only one, Shawn Alex the only MVP here right, correct?
Speaker 9 (01:09:51):
Yes, unless you include Cortes. Kennedy is the defensive Yeah close?
Speaker 2 (01:09:56):
Yeah close? But yeah, no, I mean we'll talk to him.
I mean, the the past defense is okay, twenty third
in the league, but I think that's because they've been
up on teams, guys have to throw against him a
little bit and points allowed. Your number seven. That's Michael
Doll's been. He's been okay. I guess right, he's been okay.
Speaker 9 (01:10:12):
Absolutely, I think he's been marvelous. I mean, except when
he's at home when they stink, you know. And they're
four and eight at loom And Field, which will change eventually. Obviously.
I think they may be five and eight now after
the Texan game. I don't know, I lost track of
the numbers, but yeah, I mean I think overall, if
you were to have told somebody that Mike McDonald would
go ten and seven year number one and be five
(01:10:33):
and two after week seven and year number two, you
would have said, I'll take that. You know, defense is
trending in the right direction, for sure. I think the
offense is also trending in the right direction.
Speaker 7 (01:10:43):
For sure.
Speaker 9 (01:10:44):
They're gonna need to make a couple of tweaks over
the offseason, probably to their run game, and maybe they're
receiving depth over the offseason. That right guard spot eventually
is gonna have to be addressed. But you know, you
can't do that now. But I think they're doing great.
Speaker 2 (01:10:58):
Yeah, the big question out here. So Christian Haynes, Jim
Moore's favorite guy. He's back, he's he's off the injured list, practicing,
and the big question is, hey, can he replace Anthony Bradford?
And I mean McDonald's asked that like two or three
different ways today out here, and he's like, well, you know,
those guys won the job. You know, he won the
job during the training camp and all this stuff, and
(01:11:18):
I'm like, God, really is it is.
Speaker 5 (01:11:20):
He that so?
Speaker 6 (01:11:20):
Well?
Speaker 9 (01:11:21):
But but remember remember though, and I know that you
know this, this is just for sake of conversation, that
Connor Williams got the starting center job over Big o'lu two.
But he showed up here because you know, I mean,
they obviously made the trade or signed Connor excuse me,
in free agency when clearly he wasn't ready to play
because of the knee injury, and because they made the
(01:11:41):
deal because they thought Big Ola wasn't ready. And then
guess what happened when Connor Williams quit and retired, Big
Olu stepped in and looked okay at center. So point
del right, But my point is maybe Christian Haynes needed
a kick in the ass from Anthony Bradford in training camp.
You know, maybe he needs, maybe he needs to sit
on the bench for a couple of months and think
about what he's done. And now that he's been humbled
(01:12:03):
a little bit, who knows, maybe he'll be ready to dominate.
Speaker 7 (01:12:06):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:12:08):
Here, man, what are you doing?
Speaker 8 (01:12:09):
What is Today's Today? Wednesday?
Speaker 9 (01:12:11):
Fourio is gonna be here, Petro's gonna be here, Harlan's
gonna be here. A lot to get to on the
radio program between now and in seven o'clock is Pete
You better not be He's gonna have to think about
what he did last week and apologize to the listening audience.
So well, he's gonna be a little bit later for
twenty Today for him because he'll be literally doing the
(01:12:31):
show from Dodger Stadium with his co host for before
Game five of the World Series. And then you know
what he's doing when his show's over, what he's going
going home?
Speaker 5 (01:12:40):
What?
Speaker 8 (01:12:41):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (01:12:41):
They they literally have the rights to Dodger Baseball and
he will be leaving the stadium to go home.
Speaker 2 (01:12:47):
He will not have tickets.
Speaker 9 (01:12:49):
He could he could absolutely stay if he wanted to.
It's leaving the World Series I hope I'd like to
leave the World Series.
Speaker 2 (01:12:57):
I hope you kid what we have for you.
Speaker 8 (01:13:00):
He doesn't like people, man, I know, but you know people.
Speaker 2 (01:13:03):
No, here's the thing. That's what happens when you're spoiled
like a little bit little World Series.
Speaker 8 (01:13:09):
Yeah we had it.
Speaker 2 (01:13:09):
We have it here every year, little bit absolutely year.
Ye all.
Speaker 8 (01:13:15):
For the mild mannered and marginally objectionable Inverness.
Speaker 3 (01:13:19):
This is Paddled Day saying so long everyone,
