Do we really need to relive the Seahawks loss yesterday? Well, yes, we do. It wasn't pretty in any way, shape or form - and it's quite a feat for them to actually be in it until the end. Hardcore Football with Hugh Millen! Hugh woke up at 4am today to watch the coach's film from yesterday's Seahawks game and it wasn't any prettier than what we all saw yesterday. He breaks it all down for us and gives some insight on the most impactful plays of the game. Plus, why didn't we see Kenneth Walker? Hardcore Football with Hugh continues with a breakdown of the run defense. The Seahawks just had a bad day yesterday. We're not sure what to expect next with this team after that loss, especially on a short week. Ian updates the injuries Mike Macdonald just told us about in his press conference. Darren Brown, Sound of Hockey and Curtis Crabtree, FOX 13 join Ian to preview the Kraken home opener tomorrow against the Blues. What do the lines look like and what are we expecting from the combinations? The Daily Power Play! Mike Sando, The Athletic gives a quick preview of tonight's Monday Night game. When looking at the Seahawks' season to start the year, he would've thought a 3-2 start would be ok. However, you can't lose that Giants game. If they win on Thursday night, things will be ok. We take a trip around the league for the latest headlines.

second game. Yesterday, Phillies are the Mets seven to six.
There's a game coming up in an hour Tigers and

(01:59):
Guardians up here. That's coming up in Cleveland in that series,
one game to none. Later on today, Royals and Yankee,
so the American League front and center again. Cleveland leads

to none over the Royals in the American League playoff series,
which we're not a part of here as well. Don't

(02:20):
forget factor fishing coming up a two thirty five.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to a Frostbrowed
Coors Light Choose Chill Football Monday in which the Seattle
Seahawks just absolutely aid an egg man. It just it was,
you know, in the in in our buddy Daniel Neil

(03:07):
wrote a great story on his on his page dani Apostrophe.
We have Danny on every Friday, we'll have him on
this week as well. He titled it the Anatomy of
a Bad Loss. If you don't subscribe to Danny's work,
go do so. It's great stuff. And it's kind of
going through like the checklist of what a bad loss is,
and Seattle hit every one of those yesterday, like not
even close, Like they just they checked every single loss

(03:30):
or box for a bad loss. It was.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
It was a.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Game in which I felt, truly felt that.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
And this is weird.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
It's I'm I'm watching on TV. It's a different experience
for me watching the Seahawk game on TV. But the
perspective is really interesting because of a great job. SEEB
has had a great job of the coverage yesterday outside
of the all New York Giants crew three guys from
New York. Outside of that, their production was fantastic. They
did a great job. You got a real good feel

(04:02):
of what was going on that CLS Seattle sideline, So
a shout out to whoever's producing that show for CBS.
That may not have been their a team, but damn close.
And you got a feel for watching them that sideline.
It was not good. It was bad body language, it
was bad mojo, it was bad everything. And you know
some and I thought the crowd was fantastic. If you

(04:23):
were there, you can probably tell me at four nine,
four or five one but I thought the crowd was unreal.
I thought they were fantastic into the game, beautiful day
for football, perfect day setting up. They probably showed up there,
you know, sixty eight thousand people showed up and the
majority of thinking, you know, our Seahawks fans going nice,
big win, coming up, four and one. Here we go,
and that's fine that the fans have that attitude. The

(04:47):
team sure as hell didn't. That was just I don't
want to use I think embarrassing is too strong a
word because NFL teams are There's still enough parody in
this league. But I just don't know if you can
have any excuses did not show up like they did.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
Yeah, when I'm on the sidelines for football, I use
a word very sparingly. But flat is the one that
I noticed, at least in Boise with Washington Stadia.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
I can feel it.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
You can feel it, and that I'm glad that you
mentioned the production crew because capturing that is not easy.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
No, they did a good job with that. I just
kind of it went for and I would say, yeah,
flat then frustrated. Ryan Grubb is I think is a
massive upgrade over Shane Waldron. So don't get me wrong,
when I say this, but I thought Ryan Grubb just
had as bad a game as he possibly could ever have.
I think he had one of those against is It

(05:39):
Arizona stayed a couple of years, first year at Washington
maybe where it was just like, dude, what are you doing?
Like did you just like? What are you doing? And
then he bounces back and as every game after that
is just perfect. I thought, Mike McDonald and I'll ask
you hardcore football twelve twenty, we'll get things going. I
know there's been some injuries, but I don't know if

(06:01):
this defense is any better. In fact, i'd need h
to tell me if they are better why, because on
the surface, they're not. And the thing that I believe
to me is most frustrating. Listen, if you're gonna say
I thought Scott Huff would do more. I thought Scot

(06:22):
Huff would be able to do more with that offensive line.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
They're awful. They just are. They're not good.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
I the center and give him a little bit of
a break because he's coming off an acl Connor Williams,
I mean, and didn't have training camp. But he gets
overpowered a lot. The two guards, the rotating guards at
right guard. If you have two, you got none. That's obvious.
Lake and Tomlinson is just okay Charles Cross. If you

(06:53):
listen to our segment on Friday with Greg Cosel, who's
probably is object active as it gets, he had a
lot of concerns about Charles Cross. He feels he's not
getting set, he's getting pushed back into the pocket. So
you start there on the offense with a bad offensive
line and offensive coording to it, obviously felt like you
couldn't run the football, and then on the defensive side,

(07:16):
they just give up too much. They just give up way, way,
way too much. And my only criticism of Trey Brown is, dude,
don't go on social media. Just don't it is don't
do it always.

Speaker 4 (07:32):
I think that was a Herm Edwards expression too.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
You're a pretty good football player twenty two, Like, you're
pretty good football player. You got a bad day, but
you weren't the only guy. Your coaching staff had a
worse day. They didn't have you guys ready to play.
They didn't have a game plan that was effective, so
they had a bad day. They had a really bad
day as a coaching staff. Welcome to the NFL, Mike McDonald,
But and Ryan Grubb. But as players, Trey Brown, if

(07:58):
you miss any one on social media is well waiting
four years for me, Like just stop, don't do that,
Just don't do that. It's just it does it's a
bad look. And listen, you want to turn fans against you,
that's how you do it.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Right there.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
You had a bad day, But you know what, so
did everybody else who didn't have a bad day.

Speaker 1 (08:17):
Maybe I could.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
The only guy was thinking of was maybe Tyler was Okay,
he's Tyler. He doesn't he didn't have any bad days.
Tyler's fine. Js N had a bad day. DK had
a bad day. Ken Walker didn't even have a day
because he didn't give an opportunity to have a day.
Gino did not have a good day. I don't know
what the Noah fan thing is. I I if he's

(08:40):
like he's barely on the roster. They paid him a
ton of money to not be involved in the offense
and you know, I mean not hit by his choice.
Jenna didn't have a good day. He got hurt again.
He turned into Andre Burakowski like are we gonna like
like that gonna see yeah, that's and and you know what,
ninety five is healthy for the crack and so I'm
excited to watching him play tomorrow. But number ten for

(09:02):
the Seahawks just he's had a rough couple of years.
It's a bad day. Certain games you just can't lose.
You cannot kick them. And now what you've done by
losing that game, all the equity built up by going
three and one and three and zero to start, you've
lost it in the last two weeks. Get it back whenever.

(09:25):
The forty nine ers will be a nice bonus, because
that's not when you had chalked in. There probably is
a winder in the year, so you got to make
that up along the way. NFL playoffs are very very
very very simple. Right hand column cannot exceed a certain number,
and in today's NFL that certain number that it can't
exceed is probably seven. Like you probably have to be

(09:47):
ten and seven to get to the playoffs. You've got
two there. You can only afford five more losses the
rest of the way. It's simple, mouth, It really isn't
that hard. I just I was just disappointed that I
know they're coming off a short week. I get that
this is even a shorter week. Yeah, teams do that
in the NFL all throughout the season, So that's not

(10:08):
an excuse.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
You just weren't ready to play.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
And whatever your guys did to get you ready in
terms of the game plan, that didn't look like it
was ready either, at least to my eyes. The block
field goal, sure, huge play. The drop by JSN before that,
bigger play could have won the football game. And they
were right there.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
Of all of the flatness and disappointment that we saw
and not being ready for that game, they still kept
themselves in.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
They still kept themselves in. All right, let's do this.
Take a break, humail in hardcore football. We'll break it

Para tickets get a cracking start their season number four
hosting Saint Louis tomorrow. Of course you can hear that
game here on nine three point three kids r F
M humil enjoins is hardcore football. I've got like four
pages of notes here. I don't know, Hugh, I'm not
sure how many we're going to get to, and how
many frankly I even want to get to because of
what I saw yesterday was not a lot of fun.

(12:19):
There's gonna be one of those or two of those,
or I guess you try to limit those in a
seventeen game schedule. But here that was, that was something
that was something, wasn't it?

Speaker 5 (12:30):
Well, it wasn't any better once you watch the coaches tape, Okay,
that's not good, you know, you know, because I can
rewatch the TV copy and then they released at about
seven in the morning back East, so I get up
at four watch the coaches tape, that's the the intercut,
we're all twenty two, and then the end zone copy,
so that really analyzes things. I'll tell you what didn't

(12:53):
look any better, wasn't any morecouraging. It just it was
kind of remarkable to be to me how broken that
defense was. But I'm not sure the offense was much better.
I'm probably have more concerns about the defense defense from yesterday,
but you know, they they had every shape, manner and

(13:13):
form a break of broke breakdowns, just fundamental lapses mentally,
I would say, almost mentally more than physically. They've they've
got to uh, they got to learn how to play
this scheme. And I would cost and you were talking
about your four pages of notes, I was just like
trying to go through my notes from about three or

(13:34):
four weeks ago leading into the season. I'd reminded coming
out of the Denver game that if you go back
to McDonald at Baltimore in twenty twenty two, that was
his first year he had been at Michigan, done a
great job. He took him from ninety fourth to seventh.
Did he with the Wolverines in terms of scoring cut
it in half literally, And then the first half of

(13:58):
twenty two two, I'm gonna be I might be off
by one in these, but he was like in points,
he was eighteenth yards nineteenth and third down conversions like seventeenth.
It was all bunched up at seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteen. And
then in the second half of season, that's a year
one being the DC at Baltimore. The second half, then

(14:20):
he goes to first in points. The Baltimore has had
the best in points. They were I think third in
yards and first in third down defense. So it took
him till the second half of the year where they've
really shigned. And then twenty twenty three last year when
he had the whole season, they were for the entire season,

(14:41):
they were number one in points, number one in turnovers,
number one in sacks. And so you know, I'm just
as I was watching it, you know, at four fifteen
in the morning, it's still dark, and I'm watching all
of these gaffes by the defense. I kept clinging to
those statistics.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
It's well then, so there is optimism, like, yeah, things
can get better, and and there's so many huge plays
in this game, some of things just because I want
to throw this out there, much like like I'm just
I'm telling Trey Brown stay off of Twitter, stay off
of media, you know, social media. That'd be a good call.
I have to do a little bit for my job, and
I rarely do. I'm not doing as much as I
used to because I just hate X But I did

(15:24):
put this this thing out last night a little because
everyone's pointing fingers. When you lose a game like that,
there's a lot of finger pointing. I said, blame game
for the Seahawks loss. You know, biggest reason is it
coaching and coaching, slash play calling, JSNS drop and DK's fumble.
I put those together, offensive line or defense allowing big plays.
It just very general. This isn't what hardcore football is.

(15:45):
But maybe there's some of those things we can go through.
Let's start. I do want to get to the defense.
I do want to get back to that in a second,
especially when after a perfect passing performance by Jared Goff
on Monday, Daniel Jones comes out and goes eight of
nine to start the game for seven nine yards and
the Seahawks trail seven nothing. So they weren't forcing anything incomplete.
They weren't doing anything to stop those guys, much like

(16:06):
on Monday. Before we get to that, though, let's let's
just go down the DK route and maybe even the
play with the JSN drop, DK fighting for a fighting
for another yard, gets the ball popped out. Second week
in row, there's a big fumble.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (16:20):
It was a momentum changer for sure. What's the teaching moment,
What's what's the what do you do with DK? Because
he's a he is who he is? He you want
him on your team, you want his compete on your team.
You want, well most of us do want him on
your team. And you want this guy. He's a wrecking ball,
He is a humil in term thoroughbred. Everything about him

(16:42):
you want, but the mistakes can't happen. So what do
you do there? And how much blame does he shoulder?

Speaker 5 (16:49):
Yeah, and I just go by, you know, having bounce
around the league, play with ten Pro Bowl wide receivers
in eight Pro Bowl tight ends, and then you know,
I coached it up to the high school level as
as the passing game coordinator, and so I just go by,
you know, the things I picked up, uh, trying to
pay attention back in the league. And and my my

(17:09):
response would be there was a lot of teaching opportunities
in the Detroit fumble, because first of all, I'd say, Okay,
your T shirts coming out T shirt is coming.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
Out of your jersey.

Speaker 5 (17:19):
Uh, that looks great, But but let's watch this play.
The linebackers literally holding you up by the T shirt
that you've elected to hang down to your ass cheek,
and uh, so we can solve that right away. And
then when when the ball got you know, the football
is is obviously it's oblong shape. It's on its long

(17:41):
axis is point to point when you when you're having
the five points of pressure on the on the ball,
then the long axis is going to be in line
with your form relatively parallel. Well, it got perpendicular. In
the Detroit game, he was, you know, the proverbial loaf
of bread and and and so he shouldn't have been
fighting knowing that he had lost ball security. So so

(18:05):
you'd go through those points with him. Right yesterday, I
look and I say, hey, you know you had your
points of of contact.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
You you covered up with two hands.

Speaker 5 (18:17):
He caught a little what's called a stick route, a
little you know, a little slant stop right over the
not slit a spot route, a little slant stop over
the middle, and then he gets vertical in zone coverage,
cover up both hands. He did everything. The process was
correct in my opinion. Yesterday it was not against Detroit.
It's like Bucky and and and Chuck in the morning
when they talk about you know, if you strike out,

(18:40):
if you have the right approach up there, and and
a guy throws a couple of really good pitches, you
walk back. You go, Edgar, what should I do? And
Edgar's gonna say, well, your approach is right. You know,
the guy made a couple of good pitches. He's a
pro pitcher. And yet if you don't have the right
approach and and you with and then then you can
talk about the approach. So they're both strikeouts. Uh, they're

(19:04):
both bad for the for your team. But but your
approach is correct. So I would say in that light,
the DK's approach was correct yesterday. And and they just
you know, they just made the Giants. Uh you want
to call it a lucky player, I'm not gonna call
it lucky. They made they made the perfect punch out
with two guys there. But he was protecting the ball

(19:25):
as well as he could, so I wouldn't. I would
just kind of leave it alone. He can't paralyze the guy.
You're not gonna bench him as a superstar. It was
it was just really bad. I'm not gonna debate the
significance of it. But you know, the laying game, it
was a fumble in the first quarter that the the game.
The fumble yesterday was was the third.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
Play, uh, the first drive of the second third quarter?

Speaker 5 (19:51):
Yes, yeah, yeah, so so obviously the closer you are
to to double zero, the more impactful. These mistakes can
be you ought to had enough time that that that
that doesn't cripple you. Look, they were very you know,
I saw it just like you. There's momentum. It looks
like you got things going. They were momentum killers and

(20:12):
they can't happen. Inexcusable, but you know that was one
of the reasons you lost to the Giants. And and
if if you're a good team playing a one and
three team at home, a team that was thought throughout
the the offseason to be among the very worst teams,
you know, you just can't lose it.

Speaker 3 (20:29):
Whether you're what was more impact What was more impactful
that one? Or JSN dropping on third down?

Speaker 1 (20:36):
Oh, that's a great question. Js N closer to uh.

Speaker 3 (20:41):
I mean he catches that ball. You you you might
not even have to worry about a block field, but
you might win the damn game, right, Well, that.

Speaker 5 (20:47):
That that's possible. You were down about what a little
over a minute?

Speaker 1 (20:52):
Yea, with at least one time out.

Speaker 5 (20:55):
You know, you're you're you'd have to be introducing a
set of assumptions that the same field goal block that
they had from what forty seven yards, they might not
have had it let's say forty two or thirty seven yards.
You know, the Giants located something in in how the
Seahawks were blocking the field goal with tomlins there, Tomlinson

(21:18):
in particular, And uh, you know, it's fine to burrow
if you you're the kind of burrowed that you see
on the goal line on both sides of the ball,
you know, jumping ahead to that field goal for a
quick second. That's if you have a heavy defensive tackle
who's going to try and push you back and create
penetration that way. That's not what the Giants opposed that

(21:40):
that Isaiah Simmons or whatever, number nineteen. I remember him
coming out of the draft. He's a beast.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
Yeah, everybody was athletic finals right, just that first round.

Speaker 5 (21:49):
But he was a top twenty pick, I believe, and
I just remember everybody just going this. You know, he's
extremely versatile, played a ton of positions and and and
a workout freak like a great athletes. So so the
the the sin from the Seahawk perspective is that they
employed a technique the burrow down, as if you were
just going against you know, big tub of goo. They

(22:13):
have to have an adjustment when you're going against an
athlete in the A gap where you got to squeeze
the right guard, that's the term. You got to squeeze
inside to be able to defend that A gap. And
so so I had the breakdown. So my answer would be, okay,
are we still getting the field goal blocked? Because if
we're still getting the field goal block, then then I'd
say the DK play was more well, i would bring

(22:35):
it up and go down and score a touchdown, you know,
And obviously the closer you get to you know, you know,
golfers know all this. Are you using your fifty six
degree weds you're sixty or you know, are you is
it more like your forty seven degree pitching wedge? You know,
the further out you are, the lower, you know, in

(22:55):
theory you're going to kick the football, and the more
susceptible yard of the block. So if you get close
to the goal line, and even if you do have
a breakdown in in the protection on some protections, you're
still going to get enough lift to.

Speaker 1 (23:07):
Pop it over everybody.

Speaker 5 (23:08):
But I think the way that they they beat us
on that field goal block, I'm not sure they couldn't
have blocked the a field goal attempt from the one
yard line. So there's I think there's a lot of
moving parts in that well. And I just say this
because he catches the ball. It's it's first down ball
at the twenty three twenty two yard line. You still
have one time out left. You still have over a
minute to work with. I like my chances a lot more,

(23:30):
you know.

Speaker 1 (23:30):
Yeah, but yeah, but look, I hadn't intended to do this.
I have this.

Speaker 5 (23:34):
I just pulled my notebook from the other end of
the desk. I'm gonna I'm gonna list you some some receivers,
and you tell me is this an impressive list or
an unimpressive list?

Speaker 1 (23:45):
Ready?

Speaker 5 (23:47):
Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson, Ceedee Lamb, Stefon Diggs, Brandon Auk
Puka Nakua, Tyreek Hill, Deebo, Samuel There's many more. DJ Moore,
There's many There's another ten that I could list, but
but just started.

Speaker 1 (24:01):
Do you like that list?

Speaker 6 (24:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (24:02):
I don't like Dbo. He's having a bad year Fantasy wise.

Speaker 5 (24:04):
But yeah, outside of that, Okay, So every one of
those guys at some point of the last three years
have have had a higher drop rate than DK Metcalfe.
Like metcalf maybe he doesn't have Steve largin hands. He's
got a drop or two in him. But everybody's gonna
drop the football, su and Jsm's got great hands. You know,

(24:24):
he dropped the football yesterday. And and you know, I
like that. He feels like hell about it. And but
you know he's he's uh, you know, he's part of
the solution.

Speaker 1 (24:34):
He's gonna be great.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
And I'm with you. I'm totally with you on the
humil and joining his hardcore football. We'll get to the
defense and the sex segment.

Speaker 1 (24:40):
So let's go.

Speaker 3 (24:40):
Let's transition into the offense as a whole, because and
I think you mentioned this on the post game show
last night, and I agree with you, Like, like to me,
everybody had a bad day yesterday that's associated with the Seahawks.
I might even go down to Eric Kennedy, the great
equipment manager. Maybe he didn't have a good day either. Okay,
I'm gonna blame him everybody day.

Speaker 1 (24:57):
Yeah we'll give yeah, we'll get we'll get one not.

Speaker 3 (25:00):
But I thought, in every sense of the word, they
you know, and Gino said it after the game, you know,
they were more motivated they played harder and all those things. Well,
to me, that was that was a welcome to the
NFL moment for Mike McDonald, for Ryan Grubb and everybody
topped the bottom. Let's go with the offense, the big
talking point all throughout. Everyone's talking about this today. He

(25:20):
remember was talking about after the game last night, the
play calling, the play selection. I'd be the first to admit, Hugh,
I know you'd be stunned by this. I've never called
a play in the NFL, not even in I think
powder Puff was the only time I did. And so
I'm not all twenty two guy, I'm not a play caller.
So that's why we have you on. But I ask
you this, is it odd that you have Ken Walker

(25:43):
on your roster and you would only hand him the
ball to carry five times and you had eleven total runs.
I think only seven of those were designed. Everything else
you did offensively was a dropback. So was this a
bad day for Ryan Grubb, who is otherwise probably a
pretty good offensive coordinator.

Speaker 5 (26:01):
Yeah, I don't think we have to chew a lot
of segment on it. Honestly, Ian, Yes, it was bad,
and I think you know a week ago you could
kind of contort yourself to try and come to the defense.
And there was some stats that might have been meaningful full,
but no, I cannot imagine that in the Seahawks best

(26:22):
version of themselves that this is how it looks with
Kenneth Walker. I think we all respect him too much.
I think they're trying to run to the outside too much.

Speaker 1 (26:31):
Why is that? It's a good question.

Speaker 5 (26:37):
I mean, I think the default inference would be that
they don't feel like they either don't feel like they
can run inside or they feel like they're more capable
getting to the edge. But you know, they run a
stretch play. They motioned Bobo left to right to insert
him on the wide zone play, and you know as

(26:58):
such when they snap the ball the way the Giants
suggested to to that motion in real time, you know,
there's five defenders out there with four blockers and you're
gonna turn somebody loose.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
Well, they turn loose.

Speaker 5 (27:11):
The free safety use coming from depth coming up inside
in the uh you know in the sixth hole, you'd
rather turn that's that's kind of right off tackle. You'd
rather have the corner out there in the eight hole
wider close to the sideline. Let him turn loose and
you're gonna get some yards, but you lose one yard

(27:31):
in that. You know that. That's just one example. But
but going to going into the game, I'll fire through
these really quick. If you go these are now this
and how these are filtered. This is first and second down.
I'm gonna give you running pass, but it's first or
second one because third down is dicta dictated by circumstance, right,

(27:52):
And this is first half because a year, a year,
a week ago, we are, you know, kind of analyzing
the first half play now what you had so against Denver,
this is what Ryan Grubb had to similar he had
with Canine one point sixty seven yards per attempt and

(28:15):
add Zach and you're at one point six yards per attemp.
This is just Denver. And then passing there was brutal
on that too. There were just two point seven yards.
So Denver was kind of messed. But it was even
worse than the running game. Now New England two point
seven yards when you run the ball, eight point four
when you throw it, Miami two point nine when you

(28:36):
run it, eleven point one average when you throw it.
These are not just completions. These are pass attempts Detroit
with canine four runs five yards in the first half
one point twenty five average, and they were at five
point seven average when they throw it. For the aggregate,
what Grub had to look at was two point one

(28:57):
point one average running the ball. These are neutral downs,
uh and when the game's early and a seven point
oh when when you throw it. So maybe those numbers
were uh were being pivotal. But I'll go back to
what I said. Yeah, you still got to find a
way to make this thing work. And and I'm not

(29:17):
going to go through all the different schemes I described
one on the stretch there, but that they've been trying
to do pin and pull in some things to get
outside early and teams that are fresh and getting after you.
They're running fast latterly and there and and they're blowing
things up on the on the perimeter. Don't be surprised,
mark my words on this. Don't be surprised if the

(29:38):
next game on Thursday night in the first quarter. I
know that the forty nine ers have great inside linebackers,
but somehow or another, they got to get canine going
between the tackles and we might were I'm predicting we're
going to see that early.

Speaker 1 (29:51):
Just asking a lot.

Speaker 3 (29:52):
You're asking a lot of an offensive line that's playing
a third string right tackle. You don't know who your
hell the hell your right guard is because you just
keep rotating the guys in there, your centers coming off
in acl and Frankly looks like he's over his skis
half the time in terms of just leverage, power and strength,
And you're asking these guys to get out on stretch
plays and reach blocks and all those things as opposed

(30:13):
to just you know what, you go, get this guy
and then get the next guy at the next left
like just straight ahead, ab gap run, see if you
got something there. Give those guys a chance. I guess
that's what I'm saying. Give the offense a line of chance.
You know, you've talked about the difficulty, Hugh. Sometimes with
some of those blocks on like a stretch play and
things like that, you're asking the challenging, the most challenging
blocks for an offensive line that is not that talented.

Speaker 5 (30:35):
Well, and there's a lot of different ways. Look, I'm
never gonna diss on the outside zone. I played for
Alex Gibbs, right, who was the godfather of the outside zone,
and we're we're in hardcore football here, So what is
the outside zone.

Speaker 1 (30:49):
You're going stretch.

Speaker 5 (30:50):
Let's say you have a tight end to the right side,
and you're gonna go because you can run the stretch
to the weak side, what's called the open side away
from the tight end, you can run it to the
tight end.

Speaker 1 (30:59):
Let's just talk about the tight end.

Speaker 5 (31:01):
So what you know, and I handed Roald Davis's first
attempt in the NFL. So I've been in the meetings
describing how this stuff happens. And so what happens is
is K nine back to the Seahars K nine. He's
aiming for the tight end. Now it might be the
inside leg, might be the outside. You know, there's some variation.
But let's just say some coaches say the ass crack

(31:24):
of the tight end. Sorry Jess, but but you're going
right at the tight end. And what you're doing is
you're reading the tight ends block. If he can, he
going to try and get He's going to try and
throw his inside ear to the outside of that defensive
vand and then put his inside shoulder through the chest

(31:44):
and try and hook him, try and get outside leverage. Okay,
and the running backs looking that Canine is looking and says, hey,
if the tight end gets that that block, then he's
going to keep it to the outside and K nine
has the sprinter speed to get there.

Speaker 1 (31:59):
But if if.

Speaker 5 (32:00):
The tight end cannot get that block and the end
holds the edge and stays outside leverage, now Knine, he'll
look to the next inside guy. You know, probably in
that front, it'd be a three technique if it's an overfront,
but but it could be different fronts. But we'll just
say the defensive tackle on the outside, say of the guard,
so they're trying to hook him also, and then if

(32:23):
you're able to hook him, then you then you you
knife in between the three technique and the defensive end
because you couldn't hook the outside guy, but you could
the inside guy. Well, if you can't hook the inside
guy the three tech, then then you're looking back to
the next one. It can cut up at the A gap.
So for people like the the outside zone, it's like,

(32:43):
wait a minute, you get three bites at the apple,
really more than three because you can cut it back
wherever you're just reading, you know, you just keep reading
from outside in you just go It's like it's like
like a typewriter, you know, you know, you just you're
reading outside the in and and and so I think
the problem that I described is when you inserted, you

(33:06):
get this extra blocker in Bobo. In theory, you say, hey,
this is great, we got extra an extra dude to block.

Speaker 1 (33:11):
What's wrong with that? Well, it can be a box
of coat hangers.

Speaker 5 (33:14):
And and if you get the defense to adjust the
way the Giants did. And here we are just a
block of one play, but there's there's a lot of
examples here offensively, Well, now you know the linebacker who
had been uh uh, you know, on the weak side
of the formation, now he adjusted the strong side. So
now your center can't reach him because he there's no

(33:35):
leverage to get and the safety's coming down with from depth,
which means he has momentum coming to line scrimmage, and
he just blows the play up.

Speaker 1 (33:44):
So I would I would.

Speaker 5 (33:46):
Say, okay, the way we now know the Giants, or
hopefully you knew it before you ran it. If we
know that we're going to get that kind of of
action from the Giant defense, let's run the stretch, but
not not have Bobo insured on there.

Speaker 1 (34:01):
Gotcha?

Speaker 5 (34:02):
And and then because you you said, I'm responding to
your your comment. Hey, let's not run outside. Yeah, let's
let let them go. Well, that play mate might that
might cut back, it might go through the a gap
between the center and the guard. Is just how how
Canine reads it? Once he gets the ball?

Speaker 3 (34:20):
And yeah, and I guess maybe if you had more
than one or two cracks at it, it might be better.
We gotta take a break. We'll come back. I want
to talk defense. See I think I see it. I
have what Maybe give Kanine a second shot at that
same play and see what happens.

Speaker 1 (34:34):
We'll wrap up.

Speaker 3 (34:35):
We got a few minutes in the next segment. We're
gonna talk defense next night. Three point three KFM.

Speaker 2 (34:40):
Now back the frost proof Coors Light, choose Chill Mondays
with the Infernets on your home for the twelfth Man
and the NFL Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ
r FM sales staff doing a good.

Speaker 1 (34:56):
Job, so we don't have a ton of time here, Hugh.
Let me get to this.

Speaker 3 (35:00):
There's a lot being said about the past defense that's
been I know you talked about this morning with Mike
and everybody else. They ran for one hundred and seventy
five yards. What the hell's going on up front? Is
this defense?

Speaker 1 (35:11):
Are they better than last year?

Speaker 3 (35:12):
What's going on?

Speaker 2 (35:13):
Man?

Speaker 1 (35:13):
How abou out here? This soho used used to be
an hour, but I gotta talk fast, all right? So
all right, what you have with gaps?

Speaker 5 (35:22):
If you're gonna play with two safeties back, then you're
gonna be You're gonna be one gap light in the box, okay,
And so somebody can have to two gap. At least
one player is gonna have to two gap. Now, so
it can be a linebacker away from the flow. He
can have two gaps or they can Sometimes you see
the Seahawks that play like a gap and a half

(35:44):
with their defensive lineman, like on a on a play
with Haskins where he should have been, you know, he
has the B gap. Uh, he's kind of staying in
the game. That's between the guard and the tackle. And
then he tried to jump in the last minute into
the A gap. The running back goes in the B
game and they get seven yards. But I suppose you
can live with seven yards. You know, there's an earlier

(36:05):
play when they're playing with a too high you've got
to have Jerome Baker. He's got to be in the
B gap. I'll give you all I describe all the situations.

Speaker 1 (36:15):
We don't have the time, but he's got to be
in that B gap.

Speaker 5 (36:18):
He wasn't They give up twenty seven yards on a
cutback away from the point of attack. On a similar
play on what's called duo, we get double teams. It's
always to the tight end side we're giving. You know,
if if you coach duo on offense, you tell the
running back, hey, you're either gonna you know, hit the

(36:38):
A gap on the on the tight end side, or
bounce it to the tight end on the back on
the tight end side. It's generally not a play inside
zone can hit the cutback on the weak side, but
not duo. And we're giving We're give up a twenty
seven yard or six yard or I think there's something
else on my page here where we're I know last
week against Detroit we're giving backside runs up to duo

(37:02):
because we're not having our gap integrity. So now I'll
say this we I think my opinion of this team
is growing in the following I think we're better off
as a one high team with you have Julian love
in the hole in the deep hole free safety. I
think Jenkins, I like his physicality up front. The corners

(37:25):
certainly can play it with Riek Wollen and Spoon, and
I think they're maybe playing a little too much, too
high with Spoon in the slot and playing you know,
because when you put Spoon in the slot, now you're
he's a great, great player, But if you run at him,
he's still only one hundred and ninety, you know, one
hundred and eighty five pounds, and then you have one

(37:47):
less gap. And I'm just you know, Tyrrel Dotson and
Baker had Oh my gosh, we could do a whole
segment on Baker because he had a bunch of great
plays and he had both in coverage and his gaps
that I've touched on, like he gives up an over
route on a seventeen yard over out to the tight
endy you know, out of Cover three, where where he's

(38:07):
got to be able to play that that weak side zone. Anyways,
I violated our handshake that we wouldn't get into past.
But but I think that we're better off as a
single safety defense. But you know, just closing with Tyrell Dotson,
there's a play. I couldn't believe. I had to watch
it several times to believe it. The Giants get into ifirmation.

(38:29):
They run lead left and I'm trying. I'm looking for
the I'm ian, I'm looking for the window dressing. I'm
looking for the eye candy. Is there a fly sweep?

Speaker 4 (38:37):
No?

Speaker 5 (38:37):
Is there some swanky uh voodoo slight of hand going on?

Speaker 1 (38:43):
No, this is just lead. This would have been you know,
Don James.

Speaker 3 (38:47):
I'm gonna say, James, this is Robin Earl and Rick
Finny in the game.

Speaker 1 (38:51):
What are we doing here? What it's like watching Monty
Cohler oday? Holy crap, dude, stop with the lead, you know?

Speaker 5 (39:00):
But uh, but there's just nothing And and for so
whatever reason, Terrell Dotson got a got a play action trigger.
The tailback is coming at the point of attack with
the lead blocker, and our middle linebacker is high tailing
it down the hashmark with his back to the defense,
going in the opposite direction.

Speaker 1 (39:21):
Trying to find something.

Speaker 5 (39:22):
It's like I used to have a dog. It's like, hey,
never go get the bunny, you know. And he chase
the bunny and then and then it comes.

Speaker 1 (39:28):
And then he comes back running back and then you're
scared of the bunny. Like you're not chasing the bunny,
You're you're just scared of the bunny.

Speaker 3 (39:35):
Dotson was chasing the bunny in.

Speaker 5 (39:38):
Any event, you know, that's what our middle linebacker looked
in that moment. So, uh, he's like, he's an athletic guy. Again,
getting back to Terrell Dotson. Uh, he's an athletic guy,
but point of attack he's taking on blocks is really suspect.
And I do not think that Terrell Dotson is the
linebacker of the future for this team.

Speaker 1 (39:59):
Uh maybe I'm maybe.

Speaker 5 (40:00):
It's maybe it's October and I should have withheld that
see a little bit more and make that comment mid November.

Speaker 1 (40:06):
So give me the chance to backpedal on that.

Speaker 3 (40:09):
Absolutely, Yeah, no, we will. We got to go. It
was interesting Tyree Knight didn't even play one snap yesterday,
which is crazy.

Speaker 1 (40:18):
Anyway.

Speaker 3 (40:18):
Let's let's let's not to say he's the answer all
pro or a Dick Buckets, you know, or anything like that,
but it's the guy who played a lot of football
last three weeks and and he didn't play one snap.
I'm going to do this my people. Well, her name's Jessman,
She's going to talk to you and then I'm I
we'll discuss because I think we need more time, buddy,
and we've got no more molly wop. We need more time.
I'm thinking we might swita. Yeah, let's go back to that.

(40:41):
Let's let's go back to the one o'clock hour. Maybe
we'll try to do that next week. We'll talk to
you out. We'll figure that out. No, I'm not, uh,
I just kind of said that. It's like, Wow, I
I feel like we're always rushed and I want to
have more time. And I think our baseball team did
is a favor. They're on the playoffs. We'll have more
time next week. So talk to you soon. If that's
youmailing hardcore football, we we gotta do a hockey wop

(41:04):

forget its cracking ticket Monday. When you hear the sounder

injury updates. We'll talk about that in this next segment.
And the Seahawks on Thursday taking on the forty nine

Tell you at one forty five during the daily power

going on tomorrow for Opening Day, we're giving away tickets

(42:48):
two more pair to give away, one in this hour
when you hear the sounder, another in the two o'clock
hour when you hear the sounder. Also Factor fiction two
thirty five. Busy day. Let me just give you the
updates on the Seahawks and their injuries. Mike McDonald just
did his news conference just a short time ago. Short weeks,
so it's just the schedules are all kind of goofy.
Bira Murphy probably another week that he'll miss, so don't

(43:10):
expect to see him on Thursday. Jenna nuwos Whu won't
play on Thursday either.

Speaker 1 (43:14):
Mafe. They're hoping he can come back.

Speaker 3 (43:17):
But nothing definitive there so may not be getting any reinforcements.
In fact, a little bit worse for the wear if
again you can't play Chenna on Thursday, which doesn't sound
like it's gonna happen. Be nice to get Mafe back.
They need more. I mean, thank god Christian McCaffrey's not playing.

Speaker 6 (43:35):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (43:37):
I was just watching and I didn't get a chance
to talk about this with Hugh. We'll talk to We'll
talk about it with Homegren. We get we have Mike
on Wednesday, right, Yes, we got Mike in Wednesday.

Speaker 7 (43:45):
We do, we do.

Speaker 3 (43:47):
I'm gonna ask Mike. I was just watching some highlights.
You know, the forty nine Ers and Cardinals were playing
the same time Seattle was, and as watching the highlights
of that game. At least some of the highlights are showing,
specifically in the second half off when the the Cardinals
kind of got the run game going a little bit,
and specifically James Connor got going a little bit as well,

(44:08):
and Connor had nineteen carries for eighty six yards four
and a half yards of carry Kyler Murray seven for
eighty three. He did have a fifty yard touchdown run.
Take the quarterback out of that. Nineteen for eighty six,
four and a half, and Connor was running by and
large in the A and the B gaps against the
forty nine ers, which is kind of what he just insinuated.

(44:31):
Maybe see that a little bit, but you know, if
the stretch plays there, sure, but just committing to the
run nineteen for eighty six by the Cardinals, that's committing
to the run. That's committing to running the football. It's
not always going to be there. I'll ask I heard
Mike this morning Homegun with the Morning Show. I you know,

(44:52):
Grub had a bad game. I almost feel, and I
think back to that Denver game, the very first game.
I wonder if he's just in a mindset where he
doesn't ever want to be behind the sticks and second
and nine, you know, second and eight, third and seven plus,
which is what they feels like they've been in all

(45:13):
flipping season long. But he's trying to avoid that by
passing early all the time and not committing to the run.
I don't know, but you know, Connor did it effectively
against the forty nine ers, and not every run was there.
I mean, like I said, the average four and a
half yards to carry, but the runs I saw were
you know, six seven eight yards handful of them, which
means he got stuffed a bunch of times. In fact,

(45:33):
I know he did. So I watched a little bit
of the first part of the game before the Seahawks
started out of great concern for my fantasy player, James Connor,
and yeah, exactly exactly, and he was getting stuffed and
I'm like, oh, this is gonna be a long day.
And for a long time he had nothing. But they
just kept at it and kept at it, and running
the football takes a lot of patience, and the seahuctually
haven't had that patience. It doesn't feel like just yet

(45:53):
this year. It's it's yesterday was a bad day, man,
make no mistake. Yesterday was a really bad day for
the Seattle Seahawks. And it's it's unfortunate because the way
the NFC West is right now, they've had a couple
of opportunities to really kind of jump out and extend
that lead a little bit, and they haven't taken advantage
of that, and I you know, wildcard is all nice

(46:16):
and fine, and I guess you can always think about
that and being in the wildcard and all those things.
But you know, everyone except for Minnesota and Washington and
Detroit have two losses in this conference. The Diners had three,
Arizona's got three at Rams. If there's anything good that
happened yesterday, because I don't think, I mean, Arizona being

(46:38):
San Francisco is nice, It's just makes Arizona problem now, unfortunately,
because they kind of still think that they have something
going on there. At two and three, the Rams are
out one and four. Everyone's hurt, they're done. Thanks for coming.
Thank you, Green Bay. We appreciate you going in there
and playing, by the way, a home game. Did you
hear that game yesterday? I don't know if you saw
any of that. Just the highlights so far? Is so

(47:01):
not a home field advantage for the Chargers.

Speaker 4 (47:05):
In Factor fiction, I was like, this is this is
not going to be some sort of advantage. So the
fact that the frid book was what it was, Yeah, we.

Speaker 3 (47:14):
Had to get a couple right there. We want or
two Factor fiction at two thirty five today by the way.
We'll get to that coming up. But yeah, I I
think I go back just to put a ball on
this before we talked to Mike Sando at two o'clock.
You know, the Seahawks allowed Daniel Jones at one point
to be eleven of twelve passing one hundred and fifteen

(47:35):
yards and a touchdown. He also had six rushes at
that point. This was early second quarter for twenty six yards.
I mean, I I don't know the mistackles. We didn't
even get into that with Hugh at all, but the
mistackles were abundant by Seattle, Dotson and Baker. As you mentioned,

(47:58):
you know there was a moment. There's a couple lash
moments for Baker, but Baker is the most yes or
no player ever either great player, oh my god. And
Dotson just the drop off from last year's linebackers inside
linebackers with Wagner and Brooks to Dodson and Baker, it
seems to be pretty significant. And I don't care what

(48:18):
kind of wizard you are as a as a defensive
play caller that Mike McDonald is, he hasn't been able
to overcome that. And you could probably make an argument
the defense for most of us. Doesn't look any better
than it was a year ago. And again they've been
banged up. I get the injuries. Mafe being out hurts tremendously.
That that hurts tremendously because without Mafey and now without Nuosu, well,

(48:43):
Derek Hall's kind of it, and so your pass rushers
have to come from other positions besides the outside linebacker position.
Draymond hasn't done much. So that's why you start sending
safeties and corners and other things like that. It's just
it's it's I think Mike McDonald's staff are going to
be just fine down the road, but so far it's
been a rot. It's been a rough year at three

(49:04):
and two. Outside of the Miami game, every game has
had some pretty significant issues along the way. I mean
Denver was just the first what quarter, two quarters, two
and a half quarters were just abysmal. There's no reason
to look like you did against that quarterback in New England,
and you did. You had to go to overtime. There

(49:24):
had to have a game tying field goal, by the way,
in order.

Speaker 4 (49:28):
Yeah, yeah, you know, you look at that and it's like, okay,
we were all happy about the Squeakers. Then we were
happy about a loss where we saw the offensive offense
take a step forward against Detroit. But we're kind of
like satisfied with that loss. You know, Detroit's really good,
you know, we get it. And then this one it's
like they lost a squeaker. So it's almost impossible to

(49:50):
predict what we'll see next with this team.

Speaker 3 (49:54):
Well, I'm gonna see a forty nine ers team that's
not in the best of moods either. That's for sure
coming in not okay, don't forget again, it's a cracking ticket.
Monday and Sports Radio nine three point three KJFM, we
have your chance to win a pair of tickets to

I can't use those tickets. I'm the tenth caller. I
can't use those tickets. That don't don't be that person.
Don't call if you can't use it, because we have
plenty of people that want to use them, plenty of
people to call. And every time we do this, phone
lines get full. So if you can't go, don't call it.

(50:56):
If you can go and hear the sounder, be the

Curtis Crabtree, Fox thirteen, Cil dot Com. We need to
cleanse the palette a little bit. Curtis does he covered
the dmcak game yesterday. I know he wants to talk hockey.

Speaker 1 (51:11):
I do too.

Speaker 3 (51:12):
I need to take a break from what I saw
yesterday at Lumfield, so we will do that.

Speaker 1 (51:15):
Next.

Speaker 3 (51:16):
We'll check in with Darren and Curtis we'll get a
little preview to the cracking season, which begins in twenty
four hours and sixteen minutes from right now.

Speaker 1 (51:25):
We'll do that.

Speaker 2 (51:25):
Next Now back the frostproof Coor's like choose Chill Mondays

Speaker 3 (51:41):
All right, here we go in his time as we
welcome back in here on a Monday afternoon to take
a little bit of a break from the gong show
that was Seahawks Giants yesterday, although one of our guests
was there covering it. But I'm sure Curtis Krabtree from
Fox thirteen cl dot com you're okay with is talking
hockey now? You probably don't need to go revisit what
what you saw yesterday?

Speaker 2 (51:58):
Is that?

Speaker 1 (51:58):
Okay?

Speaker 6 (52:00):
Yeah, I've written about two thousand words on the yesterday.
I don't mean to We're good.

Speaker 3 (52:06):
I love that. Well, listen, it's it's our first Monday
without a Mollywap Monday with Chris and Nathan. That no
baseball team to talk about, but there is a hockey
team to talk about. We dropped the puck on the
fourth season of the Cracking tomorrow one thirty drop of
the puck right here on ninety three point three kJ
RFM twelve thirty, our extended pregame coverage begins from Climate
Pledge Arena. But we did this a few times the

(52:28):
last couple of years. We call it a hockey wop
if you want. Curtis Crabtree from our good friends at
Fox thirteencl dot com, Darren Brown Sound of Hockey with
us to kind of go a little round the horn
and preview what should be a fun season season number four. Gentlemen,
let's start with this, Darren. I'll start with you. You've
been around the the practices preseason. We've watched now Dan

(52:50):
biles met at work for whether it was mini camp
in a rookie camp in July, through all this training
camp in preseason. First impressions of the new look Cracking
under head coach Dan Bilsman.

Speaker 6 (53:03):
Well, uh, they are.

Speaker 8 (53:06):
They're still the Kraken. But Dan Bilesma brings a very
very different element I think from from the predecessor. And
in what I mean by that is he is he's
got an element of fun to his approach. He's he's
very funny. He comes across as a regular dude. But
what I've heard a lot from the players is that
he has a very serious side to him. He knows

(53:29):
when to when to use that serious side, when to
use the humor to lighten things up a little bit,
and it's it's been pretty fun to cover him so far.
And in terms of what they're going to bring on
the ice, you know a couple of big acquisitions this
summer in Brandon Montour and Chandler Stevenson, both players I
think are going to be effective players, and I think
they were. They were good pickups, especially Montur. I have

(53:49):
a hot take that he could be, if not if
not the best player, then certainly one of the best
players on the team immediately. I think he has looked
so so good in preseason. He flies around, he's physical,
he's got a huge shot, So I think he's going
to help this team a lot, and then we'll see
what happens. I think hope springs eternal. They're getting out
of training camp healthy here, knock on wood, so all

(54:11):
things are are pointing towards positive signs here at least
one day before.

Speaker 3 (54:16):
The season opener, and real quick, you were out there today,
Ty Kara back on the ice.

Speaker 8 (54:19):
Right, yep, Jordan I really took a maintenance day yesterday.
He was there as well, So everybody's healthy and accounted for.
Jared mccannon also had he left the warm ups for
the last preseason game, but he's been back in participating.

Speaker 3 (54:33):
Yeah, he messed up our pregame show. I didn't appreciate
that at all our first game time out. Let's Curtis thoughts,
Dan Biles ma.

Speaker 6 (54:40):
Era, Yeah, echo a lot of what Darren said there.
I think, you know, I think you'll see them push
for more offense than you have the last few years
under Day back. So I try to get things going
on that k ice a little bit more, you know, effectively.
I shouldn't say it necessarily, try more effectively, but like
do it in different ways. That tends to lead towards

(55:01):
the offense being a higher priority on the list than
just packing it in on the back end and trying
to be defensive first all the time. I mean the
Darren mentioned with Brandon Montour there you saw on the
goal that he scored against Edmonton in the final preseason game.
There he comes all the way from the you know,
the defensive zone, joints, jumps up into the rush and
then lets the bombfire on on net to get that

(55:24):
goal there. It was a really nice job of a
defenseman jumping up into the play to help create some offense.
And I think you'll see maybe maybe the rains taken
off of those sorts of plays a little bit more
this year under Dan Filesman, see if that can get
them going a little bit more at times when the
offense was such an issue a season ago.

Speaker 3 (55:40):
There's there's not many times when you know, in a
preseason game of any sport you kind of look at
each other and go, wow, that's that was something that
was that was that was impressive. And you know, Darren I,
I was sitting there with Alison Luken. We were up
on our new set, we're trying to get doing our
first show getting and then we watched that play and
that shot and it was at the other end of
the ice. But I looked at her, she looked at me.

(56:01):
We're both kind of like, Wow, what the hell just
happened there? That is Darren. If we're gonna say the
definition of a heavy shot, I think that's it right there.

Speaker 8 (56:10):
Well, And if you think about the context of the
game there too, I believe, I think I have this right,
that it was too nothing cracking. Oilers scored two in
a row to make it two to two, and it
started to seem like the game. Now granted it's a
preseason game, but these were full, full rosters. Effectively, it
really felt like the game was starting to head in
the wrong direction there for Seattle and Brandon Ontour jumps up,

(56:32):
makes that play, creates some offense, and you know, I mean,
these are the kinds of things that the team was
lacking last year, right when they when they needed that
important goal, that important play to get themselves over the hump.
It never seemed to come last year.

Speaker 4 (56:47):
Right.

Speaker 8 (56:47):
So if he's that kind of an X factor where okay,
we need one here, we need to create something. If
he can do that, that's going to be a huge
help for this team.

Speaker 6 (56:56):
But yeah, you're right though.

Speaker 8 (56:57):
It was a very very heavy shot, which isn't something
that jumps off the page. I mean, I know that
he has a heavy shot, but I don't think that's
the first thing that people call out with Montur when
you look at his game is that he is a
heavy shot.

Speaker 6 (57:09):
But it's it's definitely a heavy shot.

Speaker 8 (57:11):
It comes with a lot of pace, and it's one
of those that I would not want to be a
goaltender trying to stop because it looks like it could
theoretically hurt a lot.

Speaker 3 (57:20):
No Evanson's he's basically their third string, that minor rodrig
He was like, I want no part of this action.

Speaker 1 (57:24):
That was no fun.

Speaker 3 (57:25):
Curtis one of the things we talked about last year
a lot, you know, whether it was doing our Take
thirty two show our old takes thirty two, show over
at thirty two, bar Agrilla or whatever on one of
these things they really missed. Vince done and and curtis
a healthy Vince done. With Adam Larson and then Alexiak
and Montour as your top four, that's a hell of
a place to start on the back end.

Speaker 6 (57:45):
Isn't it.

Speaker 4 (57:47):
It is?

Speaker 6 (57:47):
And I mean Vince Dunn was the one real offensive
defenseve piece that they have last year, and when you
lost that down stretch, it totally went away, like you
had nobody that could respect Phil and replace any of
that real production from the back end when he was
out of the lineup. So you've added to that with
Brandon Montour. I think that's part of the allure to
bringing him in with seeing how woefull the offense became

(58:11):
with Vince out of the lineup the end of last season,
and that was one reason why Ad in addition to
the fact that now they've got you know, somebody they
can really trust, run both different power play units to
help them try to you know, score on that. You know,
when you're up a guy a little bit more effectively
than they have. If they can get a little bit
more out of their power play, then they have the

(58:31):
last couple of seasons too. And I'm sure Darren, I'll
you know, talk about this too, but it seems like
they're moving around more on the power play, trying to
get guys, motioning to different areas of the ice and
try to get things just just cycling a little bit
differently on the power plays. From a little bit, I've
been around to see that, and you know, maybe that's
able to unlock a little something with this group that
they haven't really had with the man advantage over the

(58:52):
last few years.

Speaker 3 (58:53):
And then we get to the power play in a second.
Darren dun Lars and alexiak Montur, those are your top
two pairs. They have two number one pairs.

Speaker 1 (59:01):
It seems like it.

Speaker 8 (59:02):
You know, I think they're still gonna view that as
Don and Larsen are the top pair, at least for now.
But man, I that other second pair is going to
be pretty pretty tough to contend to it so and
I mean even just thinking about the power play here,
having those two puck moving dangerous options at the blue
line on both units is going to help this team

(59:25):
a lot. And yeah, I try to You're right, they
definitely have changed their tactics quite a bit. They're definitely
moving around a lot more when you watch them in practice.
You know, it used to be very straightforward to see
what the power play units were and where they're supposed
to be positioned. Now it's a little tougher to even
tell who's supposed to be playing in what position because
they shift around so much. And I've been talking to
players about this quite a bit actually this week, and

(59:47):
they do have a lot more freedom compared to what
they had last year. Last year, they were scrambling to
get back to their positions. This year, if they naturally
find themselves in a spot, you know, in the middle
of the ice or on the half wall where they
normally aren't supposed to be. They don't fee the need
to scramble back and get back to their original position.
They can they can play from there. Anybody can shoot,
so hopefully that creates a little more They didn't score

(01:00:09):
much in preseason on the power play, but at least
to the eyeballs, it looks a little bit more dynamic
and a little bit more scary.

Speaker 3 (01:00:16):
Yeah, Jared, I thought that was again, Darren Brown, Sound
of Hockey, Kurskraftree Fox to theirtcl dot Com.

Speaker 1 (01:00:20):
I thought the same thing.

Speaker 3 (01:00:21):
It's like, okay that maybe the results in terms of
puck in the back of the net in the preseason
on the power to play weren't there. But what I
did see from the power play I liked. I liked
the movement, I liked the spacing. It just felt it
just felt a lot more fluid. And if I'm not mistaken,
this is it's it's Everly Borakowsky, McCann, dun Benier's is
that power play one? Darren Yes? And then mon tour

(01:00:44):
with Yorks Joan Wright, Stevenson and Schwartz. How about Shane Wright, Darren,
I'll let you expand on that. Getting a little PP
two time this year Yeah, while he's earned it.

Speaker 8 (01:00:53):
He's looked really good and he scored two goals in
that that last preseason game. One of them was beauty
by the way he spun and snuck it through the goaltender.
But yeah, I think he's I think he's earned it.
I think he's primed to be a really key player
on this team.

Speaker 6 (01:01:09):
And he's shown, i mean during his brief time.

Speaker 8 (01:01:12):
At the end of the season last year with the
NHL club, that he's ready to produce at the NHL
level as long as you put him with good players.
And he looks very confident, very strong. You know, he
sounds confident, he says all the right things. So I'm
expecting a solid season from him. I'm sure there will
be some, you know, some ups and downs and some
bumps in the road, but on the whole, I'm expecting

(01:01:33):
a pretty solid season from Shane Right.

Speaker 3 (01:01:34):
Curtis Kurs, what should the expectations be for a twenty
year old who isn't technically a rookie anymore. He's played
sixteen games, But what should the expectations be for a
Shane Right? Because I think there's always this weird narrative
around him. The last few years, it's been like, man,
why is Shane Wright taking so long to get up
to the NHL And he's still eligible to play in

(01:01:55):
the Canadian Hockey League. He's twenty years old, like he
could play in the dub or his Ontari league this year.
But Darren's right. I thought he was really impressive all
through preseason. Hell, Curris, going back, I think you and
I watched him play a couple of games in person
last year. Over the last couple of years, I think
we always looked at each other and thought, this guy
looks like he belongs even at that point. But what
should the expectations be for right?

Speaker 6 (01:02:17):
Yeah, I think he's right where he needs to be
starting the season. He needs to be the center of
one of the top three lines and get the ice
time that comes with such a role and see what
he can do with it, because he earned that chance
to have it towards the end of the last season.
What he did down in Coachella Valley with the Firebirds
last year was pretty impressive, and he looks ready for

(01:02:38):
this now. And everybody develops a slightly different pace, And
I mean there's not many other guys from his draft
class that are doing much at the NHL level yet
your last cops. He started to get going towards the
end of last year at Montreal, but even that took
some time for him. So I don't think he's out
of pace with the draft class or any of the
expectations for highly drafted necessarily. I don't think he's in

(01:03:02):
the tier of the Connor Bedard, you know, level of
prospect that we talk about. In that regard, He's probably
a step down from that, but like those guys can
still be really highly productive players for a team, and
it seems like he's starting to come into his own
on that front, and I'm really eager to see what
he can do for them this year. And if he's

(01:03:23):
getting that kind of ice time, I mean, I think
it's easy to you know, think he can put up
at least fifteen to twenty goals and you know, be
a real factor for them offensively, because it seems like
he's got all the tools available to do it now
that he's kind of grown into himself a little bit
more and kind of understands what he needs to be
at the NHL level to shine the way he wants to.

Speaker 3 (01:03:43):
And Darren, you know, the thing like you know, Dale
Bilesoa mentioned this the end of the day, and a lot
of coaches like to do this, but you know, sometimes
it's hard because you're trying to looking for the help
guys are mixing and matching. But bi also said he
likes to keep two of three guys together on his lines.
And Shane Rice's playing with Oliver b York's Frand and
Ellie Tolvinan and if we all remember two years ago,
the B York's Rand tolven In Gord line arguably was

(01:04:06):
the most effective, most consistent line the second half of
the season through the postseason. So b York, Strand and
tolven And back together with Shane Wright as you're so
called third line there. And I kind of liked that pairing.

Speaker 8 (01:04:17):
I didn't see it. It's funny you bring that up.
I was actually after he after he said that the
other day with the line construction, I was doing, you
know that the gift of Charlie Dave from It's Always
Sunny and Philadelphia. He was trying to connect the dots
and he's going crazy. I spent like a good hour
trying to figure out what all the pairs were and
I couldn't do it. So, But yeah, so I think
that the pair there is obviously the Yorkstrand and tolven

(01:04:39):
In because they've stuck together since last season, and now
you slot Shane right in.

Speaker 6 (01:04:43):
And I mean, I.

Speaker 8 (01:04:46):
Hate to say this, but I think that, or maybe
I don't hate to shit Shane Wright. I think he
could be an upgrade there. I mean, I love Joanny Gordon.
I love what he brings, but in terms of offensive punch,
I think he's got more offensive punch right now than
Yanni Gord brings. So I actually love Yanny Gordon is
a fourth line center at this stage in his career.
I think that he's a very very good fourth line center.

(01:05:08):
And you know, the strength of this team has always
been its depth. So if you get to a point
where you can roll four lines and all four can create,
it's going to be a scary team to play against.
So yeah, I love I love that third line. If
that sticks together, I think that's a pretty fun trio.

Speaker 3 (01:05:23):
Well, line number four is Yanni Gorge centering tanav and Kartier.
And you know, I think there's a lot of people
thought me included that maybe Tanna will get moved salary
wise er up against the cap a little bit. Whether
they tried it or not, who knows.

Speaker 1 (01:05:34):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (01:05:34):
That makes it pretty hard to move a guy with
that kind of salary, and he's a fourth liner. But
if you look at that tann of Gord Karshian a
fourth line, that's a fourth line you can play minutes,
you can play those guys like that's and obviously Tannavan
and Janni Gordon, you know, penalty killers at the top
of the list too, so they're going to get their
ice time if nothing else there.

Speaker 1 (01:05:53):
But I love that line.

Speaker 3 (01:05:54):
There's an energy to it, there's a physicality to it,
There's no doubt about that. On the other line's Veneers
be Everly McCann, Stevenson, Schwartz and Bakowski. And maybe just
maybe with we can get some consistency. I like that
Vineer's with Everly McCann, Stevenson, Schwartz and Berakowski. I don't
think that's a one too. I think that's a one
in a one A Darren.

Speaker 8 (01:06:15):
Oh agreed one hundred percent. And yeah, I'm just to
kind of close things out on that fourth line, you know,
Ty Carker, I think he's ready for a little bit
more production. This season too. You know, he's he's got
a he's got a big shot and a physicality to
him that you just mentioned that can get under guy's skin.
And yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see attleit more

(01:06:37):
production out of him. And if somebody does get hurt
on one of those top three lines, a winger, you know,
I wouldn't be surprised to see Tyke Carkie move up
at some point.

Speaker 3 (01:06:44):
I let me wrap it up with a couple of things,
real quick. Goaltending, Darren start with you, Curtis jump in afterwards.
We assume Grubauer is getting the net tomorrow and maybe
a pretty decent maybe not fifty to fifty fifty is
a fifty five forty five split, whatever it is. Grubauer
playing well in that last game, Darren was encouraging because
the goal Teddy was a little sketchy during the preseason.
But I think we know we've gotten those two guys.

Speaker 8 (01:07:04):
Yeah, and it's funny you mentioned that too. I actually
just asked Dan Baosam about this a few minutes ago
how he plans to play those goalies. He said that,
you know, paraphrasing here, but he said that he thinks
that the goaltending can be a real strength because they
do have two guys that can play. The part of
that means getting both of them time in the net,
So both of them will certainly get an opportunity to

(01:07:25):
play throughout the season. I don't think it's going to
be a true number one starter kind of a thing.
I don't know who's going to be the starter tomorrow,
but I would agree it's most I think it would
be Grubauer, but but we'll see. Yeah, And and I
do think that that kind of a game to close
out the preseason was really important. I don't think that
they you know, Joey had an okay game, I thought

(01:07:49):
I think his first time out at home, I thought
he looked a little shaky at times. Grubauer especially looked
very shaky in that first home outing that he played.
And so to see him kind of get up to
game speed and when the true NHL lineups are in
there look really sharp and make a lot of strong,
solid confidence saves definitely bodes well for him going into

(01:08:10):
the season, and him getting off to a good start
is really really important.

Speaker 3 (01:08:14):
They've got to be good, all right. Let me wrap
it up with this Curtis expectations for this season. What
should be realistic expectations for this year.

Speaker 6 (01:08:21):
I like the expectations are to compete for a playoff spot.
I think it's going to be a battle for the
last couple in the West. That's a pretty good conference
across the board, and they're going to have their work
cut out for them. But I don't see any reason
why they can't be in that mix at the end
of the year. I don't know, you know, it'll be
with probably like the Kings is going to be the
team that they're probably battling with most for that spot

(01:08:42):
because I think the top three teams are pretty clear
going into the year in Edmonton, Vancouver, and Vegas. But
you know, could you see some regression from Vegas? Yeah,
I think you probably could. You know, the Kings that
have had, you know a lot of changes themselves this offseason.
They're not going to run a one three to one anymore.
They're you know, they've they've got their own stuff going
on down there. So I think that's kind of the
pocket in the West where they're going to kind of

(01:09:02):
fit in and if they get some uptick and scoring.
I mean, they were a top ten defensive team year ago.
If they can score a little bit more, they should
be right there. And they were right there until the last,
you know, five weeks of the season or so when
it really fell off the table for him. So I
think that's what you should expect going in.

Speaker 3 (01:09:15):
The year for this team, Darren, I got thirty seconds expectations.

Speaker 8 (01:09:21):
I expect them to not just compete for the playoffs,
but make the playoffs if they can stay relatively healthy.
Those are that's the only caveat. I think that they
need some good help, But other than that, I think
that they're they're well positioned to make a good run
at it.

Mike Benton pregame show twelve thirty outside of Section twenty.
He'll be there, just geeked out going bananas. Being the captain.

(01:12:03):
He sent us some sound Dan Bilesman earlier today we
were talking about this with Curtis and Darren a moment ago.
Goaltending split. What's it going to look like?

Speaker 9 (01:12:10):
I think the goaltending can be a strength of our team.
And that's two really good goalies playing good hockey. So
you know, how is how is it going to start
for the season. I will be seeing both really good
goalies in night in that sorry, on a nightly basis,

(01:12:31):
and you know, I think again, this can be a
strength of our team the goaltending situation, and that means
they both have to play to be able to show that.
So that will happen at the start of the season.

Speaker 1 (01:12:46):
We will see both the guys in that.

Speaker 9 (01:12:49):
Not at the same time, by the way.

Speaker 3 (01:12:55):
We'll see how things are, you know, when they're in
the ups and downs and the trials and tribulations of
an eighty two game schedule. That Bilesma has been an
absolutely just a breath of fresh air.

Speaker 4 (01:13:06):
Man. God, he's got this dry sense of humor that
is just lovely.

Speaker 3 (01:13:11):
Yeah, I'm sure when he said that, he probably looked
right at the captain. You probably looked at right at
Captain Benton and said, waiting for the follow up, Are
they going to play the same time? That's never happened before, Coach,
I've done my research on that. That's never happened before.
They have never had two goalies in at one time. Oh,
mikey uh, what a great year we got coming up.
I just looked at some pre season there's a whole

(01:13:34):
bunch of charts and people making predictions, and I asked
the boys this a moment ago, what do you think,
what are your expectations?

Speaker 1 (01:13:42):
You know.

Speaker 3 (01:13:43):
Curtis said, contend for a playoff spot. Darren said, be
in the playoffs. They're giving us slightly more than a
thirty depending on who you look at thirty to forty
percent chance to make the postseason. I think the over
under on their points is around eighty seven eighty eight.
They need in the probably a lot nineties to get there.
I think this is a playoff team. I think that

(01:14:04):
they health dictates everything. Hell, we're seeing that with the
football team right now. You got to have some health luck.

Speaker 1 (01:14:11):
Along the way.

Speaker 3 (01:14:11):
They haven't had a lot of it, to be honest
with you, last year, maybe the last couple of years,
injuries at various times to key guys. But if they
can they can keep their core top end guys healthy,
the goaltending is going to be good enough. I think
this is a playoff team. They may not win the division,
probably not with who's in this division, but there they

(01:14:33):
should be a playoff team this year. And I think
if nothing else, you're going to have as a fan
a better experience. From a couple standpoints, One, you can

and boy Mafe, They're gonna have to wait and see,
but he did not sound too optimistic about that. Riequell
And also remains to be seen. So good times lose
a game, the defensive players still out. Defense isn't good.

Speaker 4 (01:16:47):
Yes, your week's or week division opponent.

Speaker 3 (01:16:50):

Mike Sander, who's standing by right now?

Speaker 1 (01:18:18):
Mike Sara?

Speaker 3 (01:18:19):
Hang on, let's try that?

Speaker 1 (01:18:21):
What hell?

Speaker 7 (01:18:21):
Yah?

Speaker 1 (01:18:22):
I said?

Speaker 3 (01:18:22):
Good?

Speaker 1 (01:18:22):
How are you doing? I'm good, I'm very good.

Speaker 3 (01:18:24):
I'm very good. Lots of lots of things to discuss.
Monday night game. Let me just quickly start Monday night
game tonight. I demon mentioned that we've got that here
in KJR. For you. It's the Chiefs and the Saints
later on tonight. Quick thought on that game for me, Mike,
mister Sando on the Sorry I was, we're really screwing
up here, all right. Sorry, I'm morning exacted for a second.
No no problem, morning us. Monday night football. Quick thought on
the matchup tonight.

Speaker 7 (01:18:45):
Well, we keep waiting for the Chiefs, uh, you know,
to get their offense going a little bit more, and
maybe it happens tonight. But uh I'm more interested in
the Saints really. I think they were a team that
you know, surprised out of the gates, uh, but definitely
has limitations and is teetering on the precipice with injuries.
I mean, they are banged depic wide receiver, some issues

(01:19:06):
on the offensive line. So I'll be interest to see
if they kind of through their running game and with
with Kansas City being just a little bit less explosive
than they want to be, can kind of stay in
it and maybe play the game on their terms, keep
it close. We've seen the forty nine, We've seen the Chiefs,
you know, play some closer games, even against not great teams.
So I guess that's a little bit of the mystery tonight.

Speaker 3 (01:19:27):
Yeah, Saints start off with a bludge in Carolina, but
that's nothing out of the ordinary. People are going to
do that all year. But then they beat the Cowboys
forty four nineteen, and as you mentioned, Mike, since then,
they lose fifteen to twelve to the Eagles and then
at twenty six twenty four last second loss last week
to the Atlanta Falcons as well, So it's it's been
a curious start for them.

Speaker 7 (01:19:49):
Yeah, they're not that good of a team, you know,
but I think that you know, their offenses is good,
and when they can stay on their schedule, their that
scheme's really good. And then when they came when they don't,
it can look bad quick too. So I think they'll
be a team with ups and down. Their defense is
pretty good, so that's another component of this. I think
Dennis Allen's a good defensive coach, So a big matchup

(01:20:10):
for them, and maybe they can sty me the Chiefs
a little bit, you know, and keep it close even
if they don't win.

Speaker 3 (01:20:15):
Mike Sander joining us, Mike we got. It's as we
tour around the NFL. As we are now five weeks
into the season, wrapping up Week five today, there's a
lot of teams that are probably looking around and looking
internally at each other saying what did I do? What
did I do? I'm going to get to the Bills
in a second. And Sean McDermott, because this is why
we read your column, because sometimes things on the surface

(01:20:36):
aren't as they appear, especially when you look a little bit.
Peel the layers back a little bit on his game management.
But for Seattle yesterday, that Seattle team took on a
Giants team. You're talking about injuries for New Orleans for example,
and we all know what's going on with the Chiefs
and their wide receiver position and you know, not healthy there.
For the Seattle Seahawks, they took on a team without
Maleak Neighbors, who at the time was the leading receiver

(01:20:57):
in the NFL as a rookie, and without Devin Singletary
of the top running back for the Giants. Should be
no problem, Mike, next thing, you know, one hundred yard
rusher later, all three hundred yard passer almost later, and
Seahawks get get beat up in their own building.

Speaker 1 (01:21:10):
What was your takeaway from that?

Speaker 7 (01:21:12):
Well, you know, unacceptable to lose that game home. I
do think that they're navigating a tough stretch. And Chris
Long had something interesting. Remember Chris Long a good defensive end.
He put out something saying the post Lions hangovers real
and I haven't looked at it, but so let's just
look at it this way. You go on the road
and you play, you know, really a shootout game with

(01:21:35):
Detroit and they're physical and they run the ball on you,
and it's a tough game. You come home on a
short week, and you're going to play the Giants, who
I think are off for extra days, right, they had
maybe ten days coming in, So you get surprised.

Speaker 1 (01:21:47):
You know, you're.

Speaker 7 (01:21:50):
Suddenly you're on your heels. It's not going well for you,
and you know you lose a game, and so now
you're going to turn around on a four three days,
four days and try to do it again in the division.
I mean, this was a stretch where I think realistically,
winning one of the three and being competitive in the

(01:22:11):
Edner two to me would be okay, But you can't
lose the Giant game. That's just the one they couldn't lose.
So I guess if they hey, if they beat the
forty nine ers, it's sort of all good, right.

Speaker 3 (01:22:23):
Yeah, I mean I was just kind of thinking that
it's like, okay, well, here's the bad news is you
lose the game you really didn't expect to lose, and
the hangover. Seattle didn't have a hangover with Detroit last year,
but boy they did two years ago when they went
to Detroit. They won big, forty one, big, but it
was a big man that shoot up forty eight forty five.
Then they go when they lay an egg not defensively.
They have issues next week and lose to New Orleans,
So I do see that along the way. The It

(01:22:47):
was weird because our comments were last week, you know what,
you kind of come away encouraged by the loss of Detroit,
even though you gave up a ton of golf. Was great,
But your offense had five hundred plus yards, and then
you do that yesterday. If you do beat the forty
nine ers, I think it's two things, right, Mike, You're like, okay,
this is great. Hey, you know we got this one.
This is a huge one Division game. Stay two games
ahead of them now. Then you probably look at yourself

(01:23:09):
and go, god, if we had only beat the Giants though, right.

Speaker 7 (01:23:11):
You're still gonna have you do. But I think they
just got to get this game. Yeah, you know, you
got to get this game now at home. And the
forty nine ers have their own issues too, yea, they do.

Speaker 1 (01:23:20):
They're two and three.

Speaker 7 (01:23:20):
So whoever loses this game, you know it's going to
be feeling pretty bad. But man, if if you win
this game, U two and four for the forty nine
ers one and four from the Rams and you take
that every day. Oh, and everyone's got their issues you know,
I think it would just feel a lot better. Then
you get a rest and hopefully some of those guys
come back. But if you go out there and you know, lose,
and let's just say, the forty nine ers run all
over you, and Purdy's got all day and even when

(01:23:42):
you get pressure on him, he runs for the first
down and you're you know, not having answers. You know,
that's kind of been a little They haven't had answers
really the last couple of games. They had earlier, So
that would be a really bad feeling, you know, for
the Seahawks, And that's our real possibility right after the
last couple of games.

Speaker 3 (01:24:03):
What would be a really bad feeling is having Aaron
Rodgers at your quarterback and being two and three. Sorry, Jess,
I'm sorry, you're a JUSTS fan.

Speaker 1 (01:24:08):
I forget that. Sorry, I'm sorry.

Speaker 3 (01:24:12):
What are we reading in the New York Jets two
and three stars, specifically the Aaron Rodgers performance from early
in the season, Mike, it feels worse.

Speaker 7 (01:24:19):
Than two and three, actually, doesn't it.

Speaker 3 (01:24:21):
I mean sure when I said two and three, I
had to double check that to be honest with you.

Speaker 7 (01:24:25):
Well, I think Aaron Rodgers has looked really good at times,
but is really banged up now. And that's the issue.
I was thinking of this yesterday when watching Joe Flacco
look so good. Right. I know he's playing the Colts,
but for some of these older guys, I think the
challenge can be doing it for a long period of time,
right over the course of games. And Rogers has taken
a lot of hits, and he does not look as

(01:24:46):
quick and elusive, and he's getting hit sometimes, you know, quickly,
guys just driving him to the ground. So you throw
his age, you throw the fact he didn't play last year.
You throw the fact that he's on artificial turf every
week that they're at home, you know. And then he's
played some good defenses. He's played some really good defenses.

(01:25:07):
So I think all of those things come together. They
just sort of have to weather it. Roger still can
really throw the ball. I think on a play by
play basis, he doesn't always connect with his guys, but
the but the passes do look good for him. I
just don't know if he can, you know, be good
enough consistently enough over the course of a whole year

(01:25:27):
with a team that they don't seem to be on
the same page.

Speaker 1 (01:25:30):
Yeah, the same page.

Speaker 3 (01:25:31):
Thing is interesting because it felt like through the first
four weeks he and his elite wide receiver Garrett Wilson
worth than yesterday. They have their best day connecting together, right,
I mean, it was a big gay day for Garrett Wilson.
They've got Breise Hall, They've got a really nice player
in a backup in brayln Allen at running back as well.
It feels like they have some of the pieces there, right,

(01:25:51):
It just it just has not come together.

Speaker 7 (01:25:53):
Do Yeah, they do have some of the pieces, you know.
And now their next few games, so you know, it's
gonna could be really unraveled. They've got the Bills, the Steelers, Patriots,
but then the Texans, so they're going to play some
teams that have h you know that either can maybe
score some points or play really good defense, can hit
the quarterback. I think that's let's see how Rogers comes

(01:26:16):
out of these next few games, and that could tell
us whether they're really going to be able to have
a good finishing kick. They get a buy in week
twelve and then you know, some some probably some winnable
games down the stretch. But how's he going to be
feeling by then because he's he's getting too many shots.

Speaker 1 (01:26:34):
Mike Sando joining us. Mike.

Speaker 3 (01:26:35):
The hard thing you know with the DeVante Adams sweet
steak is you know there is a salary a cap issue,
right for most teams. It's the NFL, but there's you
know a lot of teams being connected with where DeVante
would go. The Jets because probably their New York always
get mentioned. Uh, they've got Garrett Wilson, and like we said,
they do have some They probably have more issues on
the offensive line in other places. But he's mentioned, Buffalo

(01:26:58):
is mentioned, Kansas City has mentioned. Where does DeVante Adams
make sense? If the Raiders are able to deal him, well.

Speaker 7 (01:27:06):
He would make sense in all those places. I think
he wants to go to the Saints. I think that's
what he would like to do. He's buddies with Derek
car It's one of the reasons he came to the Raiders.
And then their wide receiver coach is like a mentor
to him, somebody he talks to all the time with
presnent state connections. So any play indoors, right, I mean,
I think that would be probably his top choice, and

(01:27:28):
then the Jets may be the most desperate. See, the
Saints have to balance this thing because they could really
use the receiver. It could help Dennis Allen in the
short term, but they're also trying to sort of get
away from making short term deals, right, They're trying to
build something a little bit longer term. But Dennis Allen
may be caught in the middle of that because he
may need to win now. So I think that is interesting.

Speaker 3 (01:27:49):
And Buffalo seems Buffalo yes.

Speaker 7 (01:27:52):
No, yeah, but Buffalo does now if the question, though,
you know, the question there is does he want to
go there?

Speaker 1 (01:28:00):
Right?

Speaker 7 (01:28:01):
I mean, is Buffalo one of those places that he
would want to go? And if not, what would you
have to do if you were the Bills to get him?
And so does that mean you have to give up
more draft capital? Does that mean you know what he's
going to not really band on the contract part, I
think most teams are viewing him a little bit of
a rental and don't want to see he's got really
big salary like next year in the year after. I

(01:28:23):
don't think most teams are in it for that right now,
for him, right so that that could really affect things
right in terms of Okay, if you're the Bills and
you have to give up a two and pay thirteen million,
you may not want to do it right.

Speaker 1 (01:28:38):
Yeah, And I think the Bills.

Speaker 3 (01:28:40):
The hard part there though, too is you know, no digs,
no gave Davis and you know, and do they need
something there to help to help Alan out?

Speaker 1 (01:28:48):
Probably?

Speaker 3 (01:28:48):
And this is why I said, this is the fun
thing about talking to Mike and his columns on Monday.
If you don't have a run a Mik, go to
the Athletic the Athletic dot on the pick six. The
Bills losing yesterday, they were taught twenty to twenty with
Cincinnati thirty two seconds left and they lost the game,
and a lot of criticism for Sean McDermott, but maybe

(01:29:09):
it was unwarranted.

Speaker 7 (01:29:11):
Well that my first reaction was like, what the heck's
going on? But then when you realize that Houston had
all three timeouts, it changes everything. So people have done
a bunch of hey, this is the first time anyone's had,
you know, lost a game in this situation. Well, there's
no one been in that situation. It's very rare to
get the ball back with thirty two seconds tie game,
the other team has all the time out, so you

(01:29:31):
can't control the game. If they do a running play
three times in a row, you take off six seconds
for each twenty of those. You punt that takes seven seconds,
so you take twenty five seconds off of thirty two.
Texans get it with seven seconds, which is exactly when
they got it with Buffalo throwing. So I think you
can take some issue or wish you did different play calls.
That's what everybody always says when something doesn't work.

Speaker 8 (01:29:53):
Right.

Speaker 7 (01:29:54):
I like the decision to go for it and fourth down,
but I would have had the play call that worked.
Here's what would I like what they did. But that's
what everybody says, right, That's what everyone says, and you
just roll your eyes, so you know, and even McDermott said,
maybe would have run on first down and this and that.

Speaker 1 (01:30:09):
But but you.

Speaker 7 (01:30:10):
Can't really have a plan for that specific situation because
it hasn't happened in the last twenty five years. There's
been one team that got the ball inside their five
yard line a tie game, a minute or thirty seconds
between that left and the game and the other team
has all three time as it's happened one time, So
they don't have a You don't go into the game saying, hey,

(01:30:31):
if this happens, if there's one thing that's never happened,
it's only happened once in twenty five years. If this happens,
here's our exact plan that doesn't exist. So I think
we can criticize Sean McDermott for some of these late
game things. They have a track record of not doing
well in them. But this was not a felony of
coaching that was portrayed to be because of Houston having

(01:30:51):
three timeouts.

Speaker 3 (01:30:52):
Because those timeouts didn't matter anyway, not with the time
that would have been left. Right, you can it would
have been time to use them. As you said, they
got a ball by seven seconds, right, I mean.

Speaker 7 (01:31:00):
Ye, If they got the ball back with seven seconds
and no timeouts, they would have to complete a quick
pass to the sideline, which is what teams do. I mean,
it wouldn't be the end of the world to do. Now,
they still have to make a fifty nine yard kick.
So if you do that, though, if you do that,
if you just run it, then you're taking away any
chance of yourself making a big play and get out
of there and not letting them get the ball at all.

(01:31:22):
So there's a balance there of how do we get
a high maybe a higher percentage completion or something. But
they had a couple of decent looks. I know the
third one, the receiver was wide open. Now you're also
risking Josh Allen could have a turnover or get sacked
or have holding in the end zone and a disaster safety.
But you're also opening up the opportunity for a DPI.
They tried to back shoulder the first receiver got an OPI,

(01:31:44):
but could could be a DPI sometimes, or you get
a guy to panic down the field and suddenly you're
moving and you've got some time to get into field
goal position to win the game yourself.

Speaker 3 (01:31:55):
Mike Sanam was before I let you go, I'm fascinated
by the Deshaun Watson situation in Cleveland in a perverse
way that I should just let it go. But I
mean the amount of money he got paid, what they
had to give up to get him, and everything, and
all the baggage he came with Deshaun Watson, it's you know,
it's fascinating, But when you are helped me out here,
when you are last on a list of Brown's quarterbacks,

(01:32:17):
in terms of EPA per past play, and the guys
ahead of you are named Brian Hoyer, Jacoby Brissett, dere
Derek Anderson was a Pro war for one year. But
Derek Anderson, Tim Couch, Jeff Garcia, all Seattle. Do we
remember Charlie Frye, Yes we do, Brennan Whedon, Mike Honggran
smiling right there, Deshaun Kaiser, and Deshaun Watson's worse and

(01:32:38):
expected an EPI pass play.

Speaker 1 (01:32:41):
Wow.

Speaker 7 (01:32:42):
So so he is one of six hundred and twenty
one quarterbacks in the league to start the first five
games of the season last twenty five years, and he
ranked six ' eighteen out of six twenty one in
just how productive the offense has been when they passed
the ball right, That counts your sacks, you know, your yards,

(01:33:02):
your touchdowns, all that stuff together, and it's the worst
of any of those quarterbacks. And since two thousand, the
best five games start for anyone of the Browns who
started the first five belonged to Brian Hoyer in twenty fourteen.
That was the sobering part to me. Was like as
a fan, if you were a fan of the Browns
and you thought the Glory Days of twenty fourteen, Brian Hoyer.
That really tells you what they've been through. I saw

(01:33:25):
one of the local radio hosts there saying, I'm out,
I'm done. I can't take any more, you know.

Speaker 1 (01:33:30):
And it just feels when.

Speaker 7 (01:33:31):
You do things for the wrong reasons, which is really
what they've done with Deshaun Watson, it's really hard to
get behind. That's what struck me without them playing Washington
is that it doesn't it feel great to be a
Commander's fan. You got Jayden Daniels. It's just so pure.
It's just you can get behind it. And it's like,
if Deshaun Watston played well, would you feel great about it?

Speaker 3 (01:33:50):
No, I don't think. I don't think anybody outside of
Cleveland would. I think that's the hard thing there is
with like, you know, Cleveland used to be the team
that you would still kind of root for, right, you know,
the lovable team. These guys and the Dog Pound just
great fans. And yeah, the second you signed to Sean
Watson and give up and do what you did with him,
and yeah, it just it kind of feels a little
bit gross. But it's also a beautiful thing about the

(01:34:12):
NFL when you mentioned Jane Daniels from Washington four and
one DQ there running the show Kingsbury there. Oh see,
both two guys have been run around, cut fired, what
have you? You know, reclamation projects and a surprising team four
and one leading the NFC East right now, ahead of
Philadelphia and Dallas. That's what makes the NFL fun, man,

(01:34:32):
That's honestly, that's what makes the NFL fun.

Speaker 7 (01:34:35):
It really does. Some of these game out comes week
to week. I just think where the Vikings are. You know,
they get rid of Cousins, they get you know, they
draft JJ McCarthy, they're happy, and then they lose him
and you're like, shoot, right to play the whole year
with Arnold? Then you start five and zero.

Speaker 1 (01:34:50):
You know, it's just.

Speaker 7 (01:34:52):
You can't you can't make it up. It's the greatest
reality show there is.

Speaker 3 (01:34:57):
And tonight we get to watch Kansas City taking on
the New Orleans Saints at two and two. And it's
never too early Seahawks fans to have a rooting interest
because wild card team. That's why you kind of want
a Dallas to lose last night, That's why you want
New Orleans to lose in a non conference game, right,
you want those teams to lose games along the way,
and you know hopefully that happens. If you're a Seahawk
fan tonight, it will be a very It won't make

(01:35:18):
you feel much better, but it is what you want
to happen.

Speaker 1 (01:35:20):
FYI.

Speaker 7 (01:35:21):
Right now, through five games, I think twenty some teams
have two or three wins, you know, so it's a
lot of teams kind of without a lot of separation.

Speaker 3 (01:35:28):
Everyone feels like it's at three and two or two
and three. It feels like the entire league is two
and three or three and two. Mike, thank you so much.
We'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 1 (01:35:35):
Hey, thank you.
