The Seahawks made some moves and Ian explains why. We have a slightly different show today, and it's a good time to highlight some high school football. Ian explains just how big the sport is in our state. There are some good storylines this season. Todd Milles joins Ian to preview the high school games of the weekend, plus the best storylines we just might not have heard. We hit the Dailt Power Play and give some more Seahawks news. Mike Holmgren, The COACH joins us and starts off with his Thanksgiving plans. What does the schedule look like in the NFL for coaches and players? Why is JSN so successful this year? Coach thinks it shows his future is wide open well beyond this year. He also acknowledges how much Cooper Kupp is helping this season. Is the volume of passes JSN is seeing sustainable though? Ian gives his Fact or Fiction pick and finally, we talk to Softy.

the the let's see you what and pardon me for

(03:32):
doing this live on the air, But d yeah, cam Acres.
I'm just trying to see if there were Oh, George
Halane's injured. Okay, Okay, there you go. George Halane's injured.
So that's that's your number three running back. Okay, that
makes sense. First, my first thought was Walker again, but
he played well last week, seemed to be fine. Sharburney

(03:52):
seemed to be fine. So cam Apers comes in as
uh too bad though, because Alone is a really good
special teams player too. Gotta need him out there. I
don't know if Makers shows that role, but he is
a veteran's been around. Miles Gaskin, the former ODA and
U deb Star is resigned to the practice squad, So
away you go for that. I did a little different
show today coming up, honestly different, but just normally we
have Stuart Mandel on Wednesdays at one twenty. We're not

(04:15):
doing that today. Stew's got a little early start on
the holiday, and for him, I'm sure the holiday doesn't
really include much of a holiday since there's college football
Thursday Friday as well as Saturday this weekend, but we
gave to the day off. Todd Millis Manie Hats Millis,
formerly the News Tribune, now has his own website for
high school sports in our state. He's going to join

(04:37):
us coming up at one twenty. And I don't know
if we always do enough with high school football. It's hard.
We're in a major league market and with Husky football,
NFL Football, then the Koug's and the Kraken all taking
place in the fall, Mariners taking a long run through
the playoffs, and by the time the Mariners were done,
high school fooball was almost over and terms the regular season.

(05:00):
We used to do a show called Varsity Football Live
on Fridays. I loved that show. When I was working
the night show, sometimes I'd fill in, but oftentimes for
a while I was commuting back to Vancouver before we
sold our house after the first year I worked here,
and then other times I'm just driving community home at
ten o'clock to go home to Maple Valley. When I
was doing the night show and I was a loyal listener,

(05:21):
Dick Fane for the most part, hosted it, pucked it
a little bit. I did a little bit, but a
lot of it was Faine and I love Varsity Football Live.
It was a great show, fun show. We went around
the state and that was kind of before Twitter. So like,
if you wanted to know who was winning games, and
you're you know, you're in the Nesqually League and you
want to know what everybody else is doing you're in
the SPSL, you tuned into that show. Because I was

(05:41):
the only place you get the scores and the updates.
And we had a young Ryan Divish. That's how where
he made his major. His radio debut was on Varsity
Football Live. He was working for the new Strimunia as
a prep writer back in two thousand and six two
thousand and seven. We had guys all across the state
coming on. It was really a fun show. It it's hard.
We can't do it now. We have cracking games a

(06:01):
lot of times on Friday. Sometimes there's a pack twelve
game on a Friday. You kind of are a husky game,
I should say. So you kind of get why it's
harder to do now and just resource wise and everything else.
And it's probably not as needed with social media and
people finding out scores. It was a ton of fun.
We did a ton with high school football. I will
tell anybody that will listen, and so listen please when

(06:23):
I tell you this. I think we have two things
in this day. I think we have really good talent,
really good high school football talent. But I think we
have a lot of passion. Now. It's not like Texas. Obviously,
no places, but there are a lot of stadiums around
this area. If you go to them on a Friday
night in September and October. They're packed, thousands of people packed.

(06:45):
SPSL is a four A league that is an absolute hammer.
They have three of the four teams in the semi finals,
the PU all Ups, the Sumners, the Graham Capalisans, etc.
High school football is huge down in the south end,
South King County, North Pierce County. It's huge. Kinko really
good league, like really good league, both four A and
three A Kinko, I should say up North Lake Stevens

(07:08):
and those teams up there. High school football Friday night
light's a big deal. We went up to Lake Stevens
for a playoff game my son was playing a few
years ago, twenty nineteen. Man, it was wild. I mean
it was cool. It was wild. So we're gonna talk
to Millis and kind of get you tuned up because
we're carrying the games. We're carrying the three A and
four A championship games, which will be a week from Friday,
three A, a week from Saturday, four A at Husky Stadium.

(07:30):
We're carrying those games. Benton's doing the three eight fans
doing the four A game on nine to fifty on
the AM dial So we're gonna get in with Minnie
Hats Millis and talk to Todd here coming up in
about ten minutes and we'll find out from him what's
going on this weekend. So semi finals great, and there's
a really good story coming out of Tacoma that even
if you're not a high school football fan, I'm gonna

(07:52):
get Todd to tell you the story. Mount Tahoma is
a great story. It's a great sports story, it's a
great community story, it's a great public school story. It's
just a good story where they're at. And because it
wasn't that long ago, Mount to Homa was probably I mean,
I don't know if they might have had a season
where they didn't even play all their games or had

(08:13):
to forfeit a game because they didn't have enough kids.
Very you know, it's in South Dakoma. I would say,
I don't know if you define it inner city school,
but definitely, you know a public school that has its struggles,
not certainly not the most affluent area, which nowadays it
feels like the more affluent you are, the better chance

(08:33):
you have to compete at a high level. And some sports,
not all, but some, but Mount to Home is a
really good story. So I'll get taught to tell you that.
Because they're in the semi finals now. They got a
tough one East, said Catholic. Kind Of an interesting dynamic there,
the haves and the have nots in terms of resources.
But we'll talk to Todd about that coming up at
one about one twenty today. Also Mike Holmgren his weekly

(08:55):
visit that will stay the same. He'll join us. Holmgren
will coming up at two o'clock today. We'll talk to
the coach and get his thoughts on what's coming out
this weekend. Boy, it's a it's a tough, tough battle
right now of attrition all throughout the NFL. I'm gonna
talk to Mike a little bit about that because you know,
one of the things that just has to be navigated
throughout the year are injuries. And the Seahawks, despite this

(09:18):
great record, have had their fair share. I mean, we
want to listen. They haven't had the catastrophic season ending
hammer player, you know, all pro guy like Bosa or
Warner like the forty nine ers have, but they've had plenty.
You know, Jaren Reeds still on the injured list, Julian
Love still on the injured list. Ernest Jones missing a
bunch of time this year. He may practice today, it
sounds like, but you know, I don't tell I see

(09:40):
him on the field. I don't trust he'll be on
the field. So we'll talk to Mike about how hard
it is to navigate through that. Also, Jackson Smith and
Jigba has almost forty or almost fifty percent of the
Seahawks receiving yards this season. I wonder if that is sustainable.
I wonder if that's sustainable. And I'm gonna ask Mike
that as well, because I not quite sure if it is.

(10:02):
That's I mean, fifty percent of the receiving yards. You
can do that in the aforementioned high school segment. We're
doing right, you know best. If Tina has the best
two athletes, one's probably a quarterback, ons are running back
or wide receiver. They win. That's how it works in high
school football a lot of times, not always, but that's
what hopped NFL. I don't keep happening that. So we'll
talk to Mike if they need to figure out a
way to spread around a little hard. If Tory Horton

(10:23):
is still on the injured list, which he is, to
do that. Maybe Rashi shihed what can they do to
get him more involved. We'll talk about that with Mike
as well. Four nine four five one. That is the
Unrestricted Free Agent text line. You can text in your thoughts,
your comments, your questions, your concerns. There. I will have
a Factor Fiction pick coming up at two thirty five today,
by the way, second to last Factor Fiction pick this week,

(10:45):
Softy and Fain. We'll have one at three thirty five,
and then we're done for the week with Factor Fiction.
No more live programming after they're done today, and then
next week you'll have twenty more opportunities to pick Factor
Fiction brought to you by the Lucky Ego Casino and
Hotel where every day feels lucky. And why is that important?
Because a lot of you are in contention and Er
said he thinks there was around forty people still in
contention for the ten thousand dollars grand prize. Awesome, So

(11:07):
all of you that are in that contention area, every
pick means something. For those who aren't in contention for
the grand prize one thousand dollars. This time of the year,
we go pretty good, right, that would work? I think
we all kind of deal with that, right.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
I mean, that's what your holiday shopping right there.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
Yeah, exactly, So all that's coming up today right here
in sports right Dow and I three point three KJFM.

Speaker 4 (11:51):
From the R and R Foundation specialist broadcast studio. Now
back to He and Fornez powered by Seattle Close to
the sports book, call me Casino and Hotel on Sports
Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.

Speaker 2 (12:07):
All right, welcome back in Sports Radio nine three point
three kjr F. Strut Mandel's off this week. Normally have
Stewart on, we'd be talking all things college football. Frankly,
nothing changed in the college football playoff world. That poll
one movement up, but nothing in the top ten changed.
And we'll wait and see what happens starting on Friday
with the Egg Bowl, which could have some ramifications and

(12:28):
none of the things. Of course, Oregon Washington. I just
talking to the guys from the audible a little bit,
and it's Oregon. You better beat Washington. I'm just gonna
tell you that right now. You don't want to leave
it in the hands of debates and so on and
so forth, but listen, it's time. I've always been proud
of this with our station I say this every year
we go down to Tacoma Dome for the high school

(12:48):
basketball tournaments. We're always My show is always there at
least for one day. But we carry the title games
for three A and four A boys and girls both
and the Tacoma Dome. We also carry the state championship
football games for three A and four A here on Jr.
Actually over nine to fifty next weekend. But our commitment
to a high school football and basketball coverage has been
really good since I've been here. That's almost twenty years now,

(13:10):
So I love that and I love talking about the
high school championship weekends coming up. We got semi finals
this weekend in three A and four A football. And
joining us on the Beacon Plumbing hotline, old friend, dear friend,
good guy, all the way around our man, Many hats Millis.
Todd Millis joins us, formerly of the News Tribune, and
now he's got a great new venture going on called

(13:31):
Varsity Wa News or Varsitywa News dot Com. It's all
things high school sports, especially football and basketball. Along with
Laurence Smith. He joined us right now. Hello, sir, how are.

Speaker 5 (13:41):
You don't make me blushing?

Speaker 6 (13:44):
Man?

Speaker 5 (13:45):
I gotta make sure I'm the right coloring for state
football this weekend. Man, so I appreciate the kind words.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Well, listen and for those who know takt like for
years and years, did a great job at the News
Tribune and Tacoma also SBL Live in Washington kind of
been the premieer guy in terms of covering high school
sports in our area forever. And you know, quick shout
out to our guy John Manley at the News Tribute.
He's still carrying the torch for you guys down in
the two, five, three and kind of has that area covered.

(14:12):
You guys do the entire state, especially western Washington, and
Lauren did a great does gr great job as well.
Tell folks before I get into the games this weekend
about about the website, because if you're a high school fan,
and we have a ton of them out here, high
school football, I think is a lot bigger than it
gets credit for, especially with some of the traditional media
in our market. Tell people about the website.

Speaker 5 (14:32):
Yeah, you know, you mentioned I was at Scorebook Live
Washington for six years and kind of expanded Vauta Pierce
County and covered the whole state. And we've taken a
lot of what we were doing at a scorebook live
to to Varsity Wall. We're you know, we we have
a notebook every week Washington Washington and Eastern Washington covered
both sides of the state rankings, two podcasts a week.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
Lauren h.

Speaker 5 (14:54):
Lauren produces it. And I'm I'm the you know, I'm
the blobbermouth that that talked. And and then just trying
to get to you know games, you know, big schools,
small schools. We're gonna have a big presence with girls
flight football starting next week and our and our preseason
high school girls and boys basketball rankings. So you know,
we're only three or four months in, but Laura and

(15:15):
I are having a good time and and the and
the reception and the support has been fantastic. And I
appreciate all our viewers and all our readers for you know,
for what we've been doing here the last three or
four months.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
I mean, I can just tell stories. I know how
hard this guy works. I remember going when my kid
was playing summer league basketball at Tahoma and they'd have
those tournaments down at Curtis. You're out there doing stuff
for you know, and back then for those games like uh,
you know who mostly because you want to go see
like Paula Bankero or somebody dunk on my kid or whatever.
But yeah, I get it. It was you've always been grinding
away and and it's it's awesome to see you have

(15:46):
your own little venture now and and best best of luck.
I'm sure it'll be really successful. And just looking at
it, it looks great. The website's awesome.

Speaker 6 (15:54):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
Let's talk high school football this weekend, and I'll start
with the three A ranks semi finals, and I'm gonna
say the same thing for the really for the four
A as well. For the three I'm looking at the
semi final games east Side Catholic, Mount Tahoma, Bellevue and Oday.
Three of the four are same old, same all. We
see him every year. It feels like Bellevue oday in

(16:16):
Eastside Catholic. But lo and behold look at little Mount
Tahoma rolling in as a semi finalist. Let's talk about
them first. What kind of story is that this year?

Speaker 5 (16:25):
It's a it's a great story. Twenty six seniors. They've
sort of been gearing for this. First, they had to
get over the hump in the city and take care
of Lincoln of Tacoma with Sione Cajo, the one of
the top quarterback prospects in the Northwest, and they did
that twice, including last week, to get to the semi finals.
But yeah, like I said, this is a program that's
been it's been kind of building for this year. You know,

(16:46):
a pretty good offense style. Elijah dur is a U
doug commit. He's a good wide receiver, fantastic cornerback. But
driving the bus for this team is a is a
defense equal to what you're going to see in the
Metro League. I know it's going to be difficult for people,
you know, outside Seattle to or in Seattle to believe that,
but this is a team that is just a stout,
especially in the interior, as an O'Day, as an East

(17:09):
Side Catholic, as a Bellevue and you know, you it's
just it's just amazing to watch them week in and
week out to just shut people down, especially the run,
and they really like to run the football.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (17:20):
You know, they've kind of mirrored their program a little
after what's gone on in the Metro League and then
Bellevue before that with Butch Gontrof, and it's worked. And
here they are in the semi finals, they get to
host a state semi final game and Tacoma on Saturday,
hosting East Side Catholic. It's been it's been a great
story and this this group, like I said, this group
of seniors have been have been building this for this
moment for a very long time.

Speaker 2 (17:41):
Let me just ask you about the schools as a whole,
because you know, if I might be mistaken here and
maybe my buddy Rob Ring's gonna call me and yell
at me later, but I don't think I am. It
feels as if there have been a lot of down
years over the years at Mount till Home as well.
They might pop here or there, But it's a I mean,
there's no doubt it's a city like it's a i'd

(18:01):
say borderline inner city school in a lot of ways.
It doesn't have the resources maybe that some of these
the Metro League schools have. So how good a story
is it? Just overall what Mountahoma has done.

Speaker 6 (18:14):
Well.

Speaker 5 (18:14):
They went back to back state championships in seventy nine
and eighty and after that in the forty five years
in between, I mean, I've covered games where they've struggled
to get players out where They've had twenty to twenty
five people I've got, you know, I've been at games
and seasons where they've they haven't won a football game.
They've gone through a number of coaches, They've lost a
lot of they're good players to other schools in the city.

(18:34):
And Keith Perry came in a few years ago, brought
in a really good staff, and like I said, this
group has stayed together. Elijah Durmicah Cordero, Felix Diaz. I mean,
they've this is a group that has been building towards
this and has not separated. None of these guys have
gone to to to Lincoln. In fact, they've actually gotten

(18:57):
some guys that come to Mount Sahoma from from other schools.
And so it's yeah, it's a it's a fantastic story.
First time in the semi finals in forty five years.

Speaker 6 (19:05):
Wow.

Speaker 5 (19:06):
And I've covered a lot of their lean years and
to see this school celebrate and be ready for a
moment like this is truly it's a little it's a
little like the Anacordas story of a few years ago.
When they started their rise. This was a team that
was closer to extinction, you know, ten fifteen years ago
than it was for contending a state first state championship.
So that's what makes it so special.

Speaker 2 (19:26):
That's what I love. And we'll get to the matchup
in a second. But I think that's why I love
with high school sports is you know, seeing that and
what a program and a successful program can do for
kids on and todd. You know this off the field too, right,
Like it's it's for anybody who thinks that high school
football is just about you know, some of the private

(19:48):
schools and and the big you know, the big programs
and all that. It's it's what's happening, and you're talking
about the coach what's happening off the field as well.
You keep twenty six kids that are seeing invested in football.
In high school football these days, it's not easy. You
don't just show up in the in you know, the
middle of August play and then go home. You're lifting,
you're doing off season workouts. It takes something. That commitment

(20:11):
takes something. So I think it's just to me, it's
just a really when you hear it, when you articulate that,
I think it's just an awesome story all the way around.
It's probably good for the school as a whole, in
the area as a whole.

Speaker 5 (20:23):
Well, it's certainly good for the city of Tacoma. Like
I said, you know, the last city school metro school
to be in a state championship game was well Silas
what we call Wilson with Desmond true Font or our
Marcus true Font in the late nineties. So it has
been a long time since the city of Tacoma has
been in a position to get to Great Iron Classic. Unfortunately,
it's not in the Tacoma All moneymore. They might they

(20:45):
might have filled it next week if Mount Tahoma advances,
But you're gonna I think you're gonna see a large
representation not only Mount Tahoma, but the City of Tacoma
in Hutseya Stadium next week. If the if the t
Birds can find a way to be the side Catholic.

Speaker 2 (20:57):
And they got to be the pys Catholic, the same
olds there they are again. What's that team all about?
How's this matchup? Look?

Speaker 5 (21:05):
It's very similar to Mount Sahoma. It's the defense is
driving the bus man and I think the first one
to twenty points on Saturday at Mountahoma Stadium is probably
gonna win. The football game. I mean Wassi Lubelobi's the
best linebacker in the state. He's anchored that defense in
the middle for three years. Aiden Vee League, I mean
Titan McNeil, one of the best tight end prospects in

(21:27):
the country, is also a really good defensive end. And
there's an you know, they've they've had a couple they've
over the you know, past few years, they've gotten some
out of state transplant. And I want to mention two
young men that have come on and really been impact contributors.
It's Brayden and Caden Peely. And I know since you
are around the Seahawks a lot, Yeah, it's these are

(21:49):
kid brothers to Brandon and and Alyssa Peelely who also
plays in the WNBA. So I mean, the athletic jeans
in this family off the charts. But they all moved
from Alaska to be closer to Brandon and and these
two young men showed up at East Side Catholic in
the summer and they've been and they've been really big contributors.
And given this this program some death of positions that

(22:10):
was needed.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
Todd millis joining us. Yeah, Brandon feelies with great story. Finally,
he's kind of founds like it feels like he's finally
got a spot on that roster permanently for the Seahawks.
All right, So that's one semi final Todd Millis with us.
The other one I've never heard of this before. O
Day Bellevue. Wow is that? I guess you know, rinse
and repeat.

Speaker 5 (22:26):
Right, better stories than mans Oma, right, no mess game
last year where Oday was was not the favorite, and
and and and really kind of handled Bellevue in the
championship game. Now the roles are reversed. You know, uh,
Oday is the number one seed. Uh maybe the best

(22:46):
you know, front seven that we've seen in the state
in decades. Belbie's in a little bit of a transition period,
a really talented sophomore class, but with a lot of
speed on offense. So if O'Day cannot contain the perimeter,
this could be a really interesting game. But O'Day has
had to battle through some injuries, especially to All state
running back your eyes Springfield, who's supposed to be back

(23:08):
this week. But I you know Monti Cahler, who became
the all time winning US coach earlier this year, I
know you know him pretty well. There mister Oday. But
this program is getting healthy and getting going at the
right time. But I think Belby is going to have
a couple of tricks up at sleeve come Sunday Saturday.
I think they sort of feel like they owe Day
one after last year's disappointment in Greeniron Classic.

Speaker 2 (23:30):
That's the three A bracket and again we'll have the
championship games for everybody that's coming up. They play on Saturday,
right or Friday, I'm sorry, Friday, a week from a
week from this Friday, the championship game Husky Stadium, December fifth.
We'll have that game for you on nine point fifty
on the AM dial, also on the iHeartRadio apps so
you can hear wherever. Mike Benton, I believe is going

(23:50):
to be on the call for that. One Dick Fan
will be on the call for the four A championship
game coming up a week from Saturday at Husky Stadium,
and that'll be the semi finalist. Graham Kapal Lake Stevens
is one Sumner pe out the other. Much like I
said with three A outside of outside of one outlier
Mount Tahoma in the four A millis this is this
is like same old sam Oh, Isn't it just feels

(24:10):
like these are some of the powerhouses of the state
every year, all four from the West Side and a
whole heavy influence of South Puga Sound League.

Speaker 5 (24:20):
Yeah, I mean the four A SBSL well represented. Obviously
Sumner winning it last year and now having three teams
in the in the semi finals. All have taken sort
of different different roads to get here. You know, it
has not been the easiest pass for Sumner with three losses,
played a really brutal schedule, losing to Lake Stephens up
there in week one on the last second to pass play,

(24:42):
losing you know, against six, a powerhouse down in Oregon
west Land, and then losing to Peel, which has been
kind of the kind of the story of the four ASBSL.
This team that's been loaded and oozing with potential has
sort of put it together under first year Coast DJ Mims.
A lot of firepower in the perimeter and the receiving corps.

(25:03):
Noah Smith coming over from Central Kitsap has really solidified
that pass game, and they've gotten a couple of really
good running backs, including Brighton Bailey who came over from
Mount Tahoma who's who's one of the better running backs
you're going to see in the state of Washington. They've
just sort of blown everybody out outside Week one, including Sumner.
But Summer has has sort of found itself since that loss,

(25:25):
playing better defense, playing more efficiently on offense, and now
the rematches at Sparks Stadium on Saturday. I think Sumner
fans and players have been kind of looking forward to
the rematch, especially after kind of getting hammered midway through
the year on a pretty warm Saturday night.

Speaker 2 (25:41):
Chris Hegan and is Palla Vikings down there, huh, the
Prince of pall Up. He'll be all fired up and
rebed up for that one. That should be a heck
of a game. I'm just so happy that Keith got
his title last year with Sumner. The other semi final
matchup again, stop me if you heard these teams before,
Graham Capalison Lake Stevens. That's the six to two matchups
Lake Stevens. The two Grand Capals is a six that

(26:03):
that just feels like a classic four a semi final
matchup in our state.

Speaker 5 (26:08):
Yeah, I mean, granted, pousand is not that old game
and they've already played seven times in the WI Playoffs
and it's usually pretty late in the bracket. These two
teams met a couple of years ago, and and the
first year that the Great Iron Classic was at Husky
Stadium won by Lake Stevens. Really loaded with juniors. These

(26:28):
two might end up being pre season one two next
year with what they have coming back on paper. But
two offenses that are really humming right now. Two quarterbacks
who are really, really good. I expect to see a
lot of publicity on these guys moving forward. Sophomore A J.
Tilly Bave from Grand to palisand he's probably the most

(26:48):
accurate deep passer I've seen in years.

Speaker 6 (26:50):
Ian Wow.

Speaker 5 (26:51):
And there's a guy that's in his first year at
Lake Stevens. He's he shoots out of the canon's so
fast and he's really improved as a as a his
name's Blake Moser. He's been he's been kind of waiting
his kind of waiting his time by the little wide
receiver last year. He's more of a baseball guy. But
I think after what he's accomplished this year as a
duel threat, I think he he's going to be a

(27:14):
big time recruit next year. Again, this could be, This
could be a game where the winner gets the sixty
points and if you don't, you're going to lose. So
I expect a lot of points up at Lake Stevens
on Saturday afternoon against two teams very very familiar with
each other.

Speaker 2 (27:28):
Tom Mills with us again, we're going to have the
games for you on nine to fifty on the AM dial.
The three A championship game a week from Friday a
Husky Stadium, in the four a week from Saturday at
Husky Stadium, like Ben and Dick Faine on the calls
for those games, also on the iHeartRadio app. I'm gonna
wrap it up with this, Todd, Todd Mills with this.
Just you know, Mount Dahome is an outlier. There's two
private schools in there for the three A. Then you

(27:48):
got Graham Capas and Lake Stephen Sunder and pew Up.
A lot of the same old, same on even looking
through who were in the quarterfinals, you know, like a
Skyline which I think Peyton Pullor. Once they got through
all the nonsense there, they kind of got things going again.
And g Prep from the east side of the state.
Boffel was was a you know playoff team this season,
a little controversy. It looks like with Moses Lake, although
Moses Lake then took it on the chin seventy six

(28:09):
to forty one in the quarters. But I see a
lot of these teams, same teams every year. What is it?
Because we hear about kids transferring, we hear about kids
you know, the private schools, quote recruiting and what have
you and all those things. What is the common denominator
among a successful high school football program in our state?

Speaker 5 (28:28):
Yeah, import of talent. I mean, all those teams that
we mentioned in the semi finals have have you know, two, three,
four impact performers that have come in and performed very well.
And it seems like it's like that every year.

Speaker 7 (28:39):
Now.

Speaker 5 (28:39):
Listen, I don't want to discount what's going on the
East side because last year Ian and the four A
semi finals, there were two teams from Eastern Washington that
we're in the final four and easily could have been
playing for the state championships. So but this year the
power was in the West side, and like you said,
four teams that we've known growing up and especially recently
that always seem to be there. Their youth programs are healthy, yea,

(29:02):
their coaching staff intact, so you know, all that's in play,
but you know, when it does help when you have
an influx of talent, especially college bound talent like the
four of these these programs have enjoyed, and like I said,
each each of the four of them have enjoyed you know,
two or three impact guys coming in to really make uh,
to really make a difference between you know, sitting and

(29:24):
maybe being eliminating the quarter finals and getting to this
point and practicing on Thanksgiving and being able to you know,
to get a shot to go to the Gridiron Classic
next week.

Speaker 6 (29:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (29:32):
I think I think we mentioned what the youth programs
is big. I mean, I think it's you know, having
those those feeder programs that are tied in with the
high school pop has it. Somener has it, like Stevens
definitely has it. I'm assuming gram Capalison has it. I'm
not really sure, but I just I think that's a
big part of it too, and getting kids involved. Successful
high school football programs I think are still a really

(29:52):
good thing for a high school as a whole, for
a student body as a whole, especially with we went
through five years ago with COVID not having any of
those things. A lot of these kids or in eighth grade,
seventh and eighth grade when that happens. So kind of
cool to see that all come back and sounds like
we've got a great weekend again. For people who want
to get more, how can they subscribe to the site?

Speaker 5 (30:10):
Yeah, look at look at look for us at varsitywawdnews
dot com. You know, sixty dollars a year, six dollars
a month. We'll we'll bring We'll invite anybody on the
bus that wants to join us. Lauren and I are doing,
you know, making a go at this full time like
we were in the world. We're two old newspaper folks
that trying to flourish in the digital world. But the

(30:31):
one thing that you know about the two of us
is we'll put in the time and the hard work
and the research to make sure what you're reading is
about as accurate as can be.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
Yeah, no, you guys do with a passion. I won't
see you this weekend, little crack and hockey stuff going on,
but if nothing else, I know I'll see in the
Tacoma Dome hopefully for state basketball coming up in a
few months as well. You guys are covering hoops too,
which is really cool to see. So enjoy the weekend.
Have a great Thanksgiving, Todd. I appreciate you jumping on
with me today.

Speaker 5 (30:58):
I and Jess have a happy hot today. We'll talk soon.

Speaker 3 (31:01):
Happy Thanksgiving.

Speaker 2 (31:02):
There you go, Many hats, Millis Todd, Millis man, what
a great, great resource for all things high school sports.
We'll take a break, come back. Daily power Play coming
up next. When you're a Temple backer Newman.

Speaker 2 (31:57):
In Kane County.

Speaker 1 (32:00):
Now your daily look at the National Hockey League and
the Seattle Kraken with the inf NEETs.

Speaker 2 (32:07):
I just notice from the air they in practice.

Speaker 1 (32:10):
What have you picked up As far as the benefits
of skating on a line with Canner.

Speaker 2 (32:14):
Yeah, just try and get him. The fuck is like
the best grips I've ever seen.

Speaker 6 (32:18):
So just you know, play my game and you know
Canner will be you know, ready to go here, so
excited to play with.

Speaker 2 (32:25):
Him betting with Berkeley Catton who let the cat out
of bag. Maybe a little bit sounds like Jared McCann's
in the lineup. He was skating with Berkeley Catton this
morning and on a line Cat and center. In that
line Shane right on the right side and Cannon the left,
So it sounds like mccannal though it's not official yet,
will be active for tonight's game. Dallas Stars in town

(32:45):
taking on the Crack at seven o'clock, dropping the buck
six thirty pre game right here in your home with
the Crack in the ninety three point three kter FM.
Dallas good hockey team fourteen to five and four this season.
They have one regulation loss on the road. They're eight
one and three away from there. They're six four and
one at home, eight one and three on the road.

(33:07):
Putting a win last night where they uh beat the
you know what, beat the doors off, beat the brakes
off of the Edmonton Oilers, made Anderson Hurst really happy
along the way. So that game again tonight, Cracking Tonight
play and then they play Edmonton do the Kraken on Saturday.
That's a twelve thirty game. It'll be on nine to
fifty on the AM dial because we'll have Husky football on.
That's unfortunate. Like the one time we have a day

(33:29):
game for the Crack and I'm like, cool, I'll go
home watch them college football and maybe second half of
the coops at three point thirty missed the Husky game.
I'm kind of bummed about that. To be honest with you,
it does stink. It's all right, we'll lift, we'll lift,
we'll lift, we'll lift. So yeah, there you go. That's
uh again. We'll wait and see what happens tonight. In
terms of jere mccamb but they're hoping to get the

(33:53):
all time leader in goals scored back on the ice tonight.
Coppo Cocko, by the way, was skating today Red Jerseys
so known contact. He's not back yet, but hopefully soon.
This team's getting a little bit healthier by the day.
McCann would be a big boost, especially tonight. Casey the
Smith expected a starting goal back up for Dallas. He

(34:13):
had all I'm expecting to see, as we like to
call him, Joel Joey Dax the Cord.

Speaker 7 (34:22):
It is nice if he can go. How much playing
time do you think he'll see?

Speaker 2 (34:26):
He'll play eighty five games. No, he'll play a night.
Greenber has played great though I love Grooby. He's been
playing really well. So all good, All right. That's Jamie
Power played. Brought to you by our friends at Issakua
Honda Caboda Isakuahana Caboda right off of I ninety there
in Issaqua area. Real quick. I want to get a
Seahawk note in here, jess if I can, Adam Schefter

(34:48):
reporting a short time ago Darien Kendrick. I just told
you guys the headlines an hour ago. The Seahawks has
released him. I think that they were hoping to get
him back onto the practice squad. Hope is now lost
for Darren Kendrick. He was claimed today by the La Rams.

(35:10):
I know I know anyone else. His old team who
released him and then Seattle picked him up this year
actually started a game at least I believe, played a
lot of football for Seattle, especially when they had some
guys banged up released by the Rams, signed by the Seahawks,
play with the Seahawks, released by the Seahawks, now re
signed by the La Rams. So there you go. That's

(35:33):
not that's not optim and that's not what they it's hard.
We'll have to ask Mike about this a little bit.
The roster gymnastics, you have to play with guys, trying
to wave guys through to the practice squad, you know,
depending on what their their tenure is in the league.
A lot of times you have to go through waivers
to get to the practice squad and you look risk
losing those guys along the way. And a guy like Kendrick,

(35:55):
for you know, I think we talked about this. Who
was it? It might have been might've been Corbin at
myself talking about this a couple of weeks ago. It's like,
do you think the Rams were having like a little
bit of remorse, because I mean they were having some
problems at corner. Some guys are banged up, and they
and thinking, man, I wish I bet they wish they
had Darien Kendrick right now. And then Seattle gets a
little healthy at corner and so all of a sudden

(36:15):
they cut him hoping to get into the practice squad. Boom,
he's gone. That's when Shaquille Griffin, by the way, is
up got signed as well. So lots of stuff going
on this time of the year as the Seahawks and
everybody else in the NFL, the news around, and you
can tell there's desperation in the year. Frank rag Now,
the longtime center for the Lions who retired, is now
back with the Lions year. It's just so many injuries,

(36:36):
so many things taking place right now. DeVante Smith has
heard again, Chris Alave is heard again. I mean, there's
just all kinds of guys are banged up this season.
Guys are all banged up this season. So that's all right,
we'll get that. One other non football note, Brian Wu
won his pre arbitration. We told you about Trek Steuart
School the other day got his pre arbitration agreement. Bran

(36:57):
Wo won of those as well, so he's gonna get paid.
He got his agreement was or settlement, I guess it
was is over a million dollars, which is good. I'd
be curious what happens when we get to a year
from now, or whenever they get to moving on to
the new Collector of Barny agreement. For baseball, it takes

(37:17):
so long for guys to get to free agency. Now.
It's so nice for a team like Seattle where you
have one pitcher who's making a ton of money in
Luis Castillo and a bunch of other guys that, relatively
speaking baseball wise, aren't WU gets a little bit more.
But by market value, Brian who was worth I don't know,

(37:38):
close to twenty million, maybe something like that. I mean,
he's worth a lot of money. He's making a little
a little under two million. Coming up this year, all right,
they break come back Mike hongrid on this day before Thanksgiving.
Coach will join us. Coming up next now.

Speaker 1 (38:00):
From the Star Rentals Sports to us Jordan ninety three

here on ninety three point three KJRFM. Seahawks and Veterans
safety Quandity Diggs are indeed you reunited. He is back
with the team practice squad, but practicing today. More than
likely we'll see him play on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

(38:27):
Julian Love not expected to play. Tayo Coatta probably doubtful
as well. Seahawks also signed Cam Akers today to the practice,
actually to the regular team because George Holane's hurt. All
kinds of moves taking place right now. Speaking of which,
more moves for you. Minnesuota Vikings expected to be without

(38:47):
quarterback JJ McCarthy on Sunday. Backup Carson Wentz already uninjured.
Reserve some guy named Max Brosmore Rosmer is going to
start more than likely for Minnesota. His first career started
undropped free agent out of Minnesota playing for the Minnesota Vikings.
Started at New Hampshire's college career. Oh, we got lots
of talked about with coach Homer in a second. Husky's

(39:08):
host number six Oregon or do we like to call
him Oregon? On Saturday twelve thirty on Montwake final regular game,
regular season game of the year, Oregon trying to stay
in the college football playoff eight and three Huskies looking
to get the best playing bowl game possible. Eight thirty

the cracking game at twelve thirty pre game one o'clock

Oregon State second time the season. They hosts Beavers and
Pullman Saturday three thirty. Oregon State looking to spoil the
Kochs champions a Bowl game. One more win for WAZI
would give them Bowl contention. Yukon head coach Jim Moore
leaving Connecticut, new head coach at Colorado State. By the way,
Cauro State will be part of the new PAC twelve

(39:51):
next season. Number twelve. Gonzaga beat up on Maryland yesterday,
the worst loss for the Turps since two thousand and
nine one hundred and sixty one. Brandon huff Huff led
the way for the Bulldogs twenty points, three rebounds, and
three assists in that game. All right, let's move on
our number two. Don't forget Factor Fiction two thirty.

Speaker 1 (40:11):
Five, but right now, Mike Hongren, as part of our
NonStop coverage of the NFL, your home for the twelfth

Toyota of Kirkland so special. And by R and R
Foundation specialist serving Western Washington for over twenty years now.
Mike Homgren with the Inverness.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
All right, who we are the day before Thanksgiving? Big
thanks to everyone listening, driving around, maybe getting last second
things done. It's like our office. You're probably off today.
Are ain nobody here? Mike holmgrean, Ain't nobody here except
for Jess and me and then Softy and Fame and
Jackson will be here later to put a wrap on things.
How are you?

Speaker 6 (41:05):
I'm doing good. But that means we're getting close to Thanksgiving.
I think no one's there.

Speaker 2 (41:09):
We are very close. Yeah, it's it's an Aloha Wednesday
as they call it here and went out of the
don't usually they're out of the office early, Jess, you
were here earlier? Were they in the office? Actually? Today?
Rich was.

Speaker 7 (41:20):
Here.

Speaker 3 (41:20):
He left about right before you got it.

Speaker 2 (41:23):
That's about it. Okay, so there you go. That's it.
But what's okay, Let's let's enjoy some holiday time. What
do the Homebrews do for Thanksgiving?

Speaker 6 (41:30):
Well, you know it's changed over the years. When I
was coaching, we used to have practice and then kath
and I had to go down to the Salvation Army
and serve meals, which was fun, and I'd bring socks
and different blankets and stuff with people down there, Seahawk stuff.
Did that for a long time and then well, typically

(41:50):
we go out to dinner on Thanksgiving, go to a restaurant,
take there. Now the family's so big, I'm not working anymore,
so I can't afford to go out to dinner with everybody,
you know, So no, we're going to go out to dinner,
going to Willi's Lodge, and a couple of the families
are going to be with us. Call is still in
Chicago and Gretchen has to will nothing have to be.

(42:13):
But we'll be with her husband's family down in Tacoma.
So it's fun Thanksgiving me specially.

Speaker 2 (42:18):
Yeah, I love Thanksgiving. What you kind of mentioned? What
did here in Seattle? What did you do? I noticed
the Seahawks there. They're weekly schedule sent out and all
it says on Thursday is Happy Thanksgiving, which means basically
no media like basically stay away, go be with their families.

Speaker 6 (42:33):
What have you?

Speaker 2 (42:35):
What did you like to do. And I'm sure it
changed over the years from when you were head coaching
Green Bay to Seattle. If if it's a normal week
and it's a Sunday game, Thanksgiving is always on Thursday,
what would you do to try to get your players
out of their early, your staff out of there early.
What would you do?

Speaker 6 (42:48):
Yeah, that would be the thing, you know. And I
did it the same way in Green Bay, in the
same way. And I probably did it that way when
I was growing up and learning the business in San Francisco.
But you get in there and you'd have it probably
wasn't a pad practice, but we practice early, get in
there and get them out of the building and go

(43:09):
home and enjoy your Thanksgiving, you know. And and that
seemed to work, okay.

Speaker 7 (43:13):
It was.

Speaker 6 (43:14):
In fact, the players liked it, So that's.

Speaker 7 (43:17):
What we did.

Speaker 2 (43:17):
There's a balance, though, right, because you've got to get
your work done at the same time. This is it's
there's a family element to it, especially the guys that
have families. And it's not just the players, right, it's
the entire support.

Speaker 6 (43:28):
Staff too, that's right, everybody, and the coaching and coaches
and their families and no the players and you know,
what happened. And you know this, the players, players would
gather up other players if they were, you know, by themselves,
had no family here and things like that. They always
had places to go. It seemed like. And my players committee,

(43:49):
led by Robbie, your friend Robbie Tobec and those guys.
I talked to them about that. I said, ask around.
You don't have to invite everyone to your house, but
ask around and kind of talk it up and get
people to reach out to guys that they don't have
anybody here.

Speaker 2 (44:04):
You know, that's what you do. Michael joining us. I
like the fact that you gave our friend Hugh Millen
a homework assignment on Monday. I like that I wasted.

Speaker 3 (44:13):
I like that.

Speaker 2 (44:13):
I like that tell people what tell tell people what
you asked him to do and why you asked him
to do it.

Speaker 6 (44:18):
Well, I mean, you know, I've been watching the Seahawks.
We've been watching the Seahawks all season, and then Jingue
is just like always open and he's wonderful. He's a
great player, and he makes it look easy sometimes, but
he's always open. And I was thinking, if I was
playing against him, you know, I bang him around, I

(44:39):
wouldn't let him get off the line of scrimmage, I said,
I wonder because I don't study it like you does
now and no one does in the whole world. No,
but you know, he he looks at it, and I said,
I would be curious to see how many he's caught
X amount of balls? How many of those catches? Did
he have a free release off the line of scrimmage,
you know? Or did he it bumped? Or how is

(45:01):
he handling that? And actually you got kind of fired
up about that?

Speaker 2 (45:06):
Are you surprising all the time? Are you surprised?

Speaker 6 (45:11):
You want it Monday? I said, you don't have to
have him, you know, tomorrow. No, No, you can just
enjoy Thanksgiving and maybe we'll talk about it on Monday.
You know, you know you I'm curious.

Speaker 2 (45:21):
You know, he's already got it done, right, Like you know,
there's a there's about a ninety nine percent chance it's
already done that that he's got you know what, he
was a machine.

Speaker 6 (45:30):
There's a there's a machine in there. Who and he talks,
but there's a machine and he just gets everything done.

Speaker 2 (45:38):
I'll be curious, like you just said, though, because with
Jackson Smith and jigg but with Jsn. He it looks
almost effortless. If I was the opposition or a fan
of the opposing teams, I think I'd be thinking the
same thing that Mike Homeran is, like what are you
doing here?

Speaker 1 (45:55):
Like?

Speaker 2 (45:55):
Why are you allowing him to make it look so easy?
Why is he always open? And you know, Mike, I
would say, you know the Calvin Johnson's of the world, right,
or the Justin Jefferson's of the world. You see those
guys they were they were so physically they're physically dominant.
Jamar Chase is that way right, these six foot four,
huge receivers that can also run like the wind. And Okay,

(46:16):
I get that right. They're just you know, they're not
gonna bully those guys. They're not gonna bump that with
the line of scrimmage. But jas N is not physically imposing.
So when you before Hugh gets back to you, what's
your assumption why is he always open?

Speaker 6 (46:29):
Well, I think there are formations. They spread of people.
They spread people out, so it's hard to actually and
if you notice, he'll start on one side and then
motion to the other side. Oftentimes he does that, and
that there's first of all, they're they're saying, have they
put one of their guys on him all the time?
Is at man's own There are a lot of reasons

(46:50):
why what you'd be thinking about what's happening there. But
that gives the quarterback a good idea. And then when
he does that the idea of bumping him, maybe it
changes maybe the lineback because I have to move out
a little bit. So they're doing a good job. The
Seahawks are doing a good job of preventing that from
happen happening, And but then I would tell my defensive coordinator,
I don't care what he does. I don't care how

(47:12):
they shift, how they run motion. I want him bumped
every play. So figure that one out. That's what you're
getting paid to do. Figure it out, because there are
receivers in the league. If you don't do that, If
you don't do that, and there is talented as this
young man, they're going to hurt you, you know, every
single time. But it's remarkable to me and how often

(47:33):
I mean he just is really wide open.

Speaker 2 (47:35):
Yeah it is.

Speaker 6 (47:36):
It just kills you know, I go, wow, how does
he do that? So you you listen, you will have
the answer. I know we'll have the answer. I'm not
sure if we'll have enough time in the morning broadcast
to listen to the whole answer.

Speaker 2 (47:48):
Yeah, that'll be in the Monday morning Quarterback with Chuck
and Bucky and Ashley on Monday with you and Hugh.
I'll be listening for that because I'm curious myself as well.
He feels a little bit, you know, as you're kind
of describing that, they're built differently, and and Cooper's a
little he's he's a little thicker, and Jackson's a little
bit faster, but there neither one of them are like

(48:10):
you know, Rashid Shi, he'd breakaway threats. But as you're
describing that, I feel like what Seahawk fans went through
watching Cooper Cup in his prime when he's playing for
the Rams. He was always open And I've got to
think part of that is just elite route running skills
and abilities, right.

Speaker 6 (48:26):
No, that is and that really is and I think
he is he is And the fact is he's a
young guy. He hasn't played a lot in the NFL,
and he's just tearing it up. So if you say,
what's his future, look like, I mean, goodness me, the
door is wide open. But I think the other part
of that is that Cup. You know, they say, well,

(48:48):
he's you know, he's kind of at the end of
his career, he's not doing it, but they people know
they have to cover him too, so they're they're I
think they're probably that Cup is helping Enjigma two and
so and Orton was when he was what he was playing,
and our tight end helps him. Yeah, you know, so
it's a pretty good passing game going, Mike.

Speaker 2 (49:09):
I saw a stat today that was interesting and it
wasn't surprising, but it kind of got me thinking a
little bit bigger picture. Jackson Smith and Jigba's got forty
six percent of the balls Seattle's thrown this year and
what have you? And I mean, so let's just say,
for for argument's sake, let's just say that Jackson Smith
and Jigma as a receiver is fifty percent of Seaux

(49:29):
the Seahawks receiving yards and volume and targets and everything
is more than that for targets. But he's a fifty percent,
is you know, is that sustainable? You coach great players,
whether it be Sterling at the wide receiver position. Sterling
certainly Jerry Rice from the OC and offensive coordinator in

(49:50):
in in San Francisco. But what this guy's doing, he's
it's one of the top six in terms of percentages
in the history of the league, going back to like
nineteen forty nine. Is that the stainable? Do you think, Mike?
Now I say that there are eleven games into a
seventeen game season, maybe the answer is and obvious yes,
But is that sustainable?

Speaker 7 (50:08):
You know what?

Speaker 6 (50:09):
I don't think. So I read that same thing and
I'm going, wow, you know, because I remember again when
we had Jerry Rice, when I had privilege of coaching him,
John Taylor, Brent Jones, Roger Craig would catch out of
the backfield for a thousand yards every year I was there.
It was kind of the same number. Jerry would catch

(50:29):
about eighty five to ninety passes. The X receiver John
Taylor would catch sixty five, the tight end would catch
about fifty five. It didn't vary that much. So that
that was the system now here, Like I said, to
have one receiver almost having fifty percent of the targets

(50:50):
of the catches, that's think about that for a second,
and it's it's that would that's what beg the question
for me, why are teams letting kind of not devoting
enough to stopping that? So Dan alone answered your question,
I don't think I don't think that's sustainable. No one's
ever going to just put the clamps on him, but

(51:11):
I think it's kind of It'll probably come down just
slightly by the end of the year.

Speaker 2 (51:15):
He would he would lose his mind if I asked
you this, if I asked him this question, because it's
overly simplistic. But I'm gonna ask you because you're a
nicer person sometimes, I know, I love you. I'm just joking, like,
why why don't teams just try to double team in Moore?

Speaker 6 (51:29):
Yeah, I know, that's that's a fair question. I mean,
because that's a fair question.

Speaker 2 (51:34):
You're not as afraid of the rest of the group, right,
I mean, that's that's the you know, why not roll
a safety more often to him? I mean, I don't
know if that's easy. It's probably easier said than done.
I mean, very simplistic for me to say that, but
it just feels like that would be a better option
at some point and say, Okay, somebody else is going
to beat me at this point, you know, like you said,
get physical with the line of scrimmage. But we're just
gonna do that and see if they can because you know,

(51:57):
so without Tory Horton, you know, they do have aj
Barter who's had a nice solid season at tight end.
You know, we'll see if Forshichi he can get more
involved in Cooper Cupp and so forth. But it's not
like they have a ton of options.

Speaker 6 (52:09):
No, but I know they don't. And and it's that's
a good question, And that's kind of the question is
going through my mind. I think before too long you
might see just a little different thing going there that
you that other guys get involved just a little bit more.
Because defenses, you have to look at the film and

(52:30):
you have to say, this guy has won games for them,
this one player with catches and yardage and all that
kind of stuff. Now, Donald has done a nice job
of getting him the ball. But it's just like anything else.
You get a you take a receiver out a little
bit from a quarterback's comfort zone, and all of a

(52:50):
sudden that changes a little as well, you know. So
I'll give credit to Donald, I really do. And and
but and Jigula is I'm happy for him. And then
it would be great if nothing changed, But I think
that's we'll see. I think it's going to change just
a little bit.

Speaker 2 (53:07):
Mike Comrin's one of your pet peeves in this world
is how the NFL teams and how the NFL as
a whole roster construction wise treats the quarterback position. I
mean that by not having three quarterbacks always on your
active roster, you know all those things, and you know,
not always drafting a quarterback. And I'm sure you've had

(53:29):
conversations with your your friend John Schneider about that over
the years when he until this year drafting mill Row
had kind of avoided that forever, right, But I bring
that up. JJ McCarthy is probably going to miss the
game Sunday with the Seahawks. Carson Wentz is the backup.
He is on the injured reserve. They're going to go
to a guy, Max Brosmer, who is an undrafted free agent.

(53:51):
Started his career in New Hampshire, ended up at the
University of Minnesota, so he did play in the Big
Ten at the end, but he's undrafted free agent, never
started a game, Mike, how can a team find itself
in that position?

Speaker 6 (54:03):
You know, that's Uh, I, I don't know. I'm that
that's you've done it. You've done it wrong then, because
here you have a team in the Minnesota Vikings. Prior
to the start of the season, they were expected to
be something special and right now it's it's falling apart,

(54:23):
part of injuries, and that's it happens. But then you
have to prepare for that. You have to think about that,
and particularly at that position now I must. I'll be
honest with you, I'm not sure I knew this young
man's name.

Speaker 2 (54:38):
You know I didn't either, Mike. I tell you I
I watch a lot of college football over the years.
Every week, I we we study a lot for the draft,
and obviously nobody studies it, likes say our friend Rob
rang does, but like like like who like I I'm
trying to think when we talked to Great Cosel and

(54:59):
Pallozolo and all these other people's pre draft, I never
heard this guy's name brought up, like and uh, you
know in college what have you? And and he's going
to start a game, I mean, good for him, and
what a thrill starting for a team where you into
their big thing career. And I think he might even
be from Minnesota or Minneapolis. But but yeah, it's just
it's now they're four and seven, they're probably at the

(55:21):
point where like whatever doesn't matter. I mean, what's we're
we're playing for draft picks anyway right now. But it's
just it's it's remarkable how hard it is to I
mean even Cleveland, Cleveland, they've gone through like four or
five quarterbacks already this year. Like it's it's remarkable.

Speaker 7 (55:35):
No.

Speaker 6 (55:36):
Finally, you know, I was on all those committees in
the league and we'd talk about roster and how we're
going to use the quarterbacks, and I ran and rave
all the time, and they didn't want to change it
very much. And for the life of me to this day,
I don't know why. Then they finally changed it. Now.
Of course, you have a lot more people on your
practice squad. Yeah, so you can have you can have
young people that are that are open to practices and

(55:59):
understand your system him and things like that. But you
have to have if you're down to your third quarterback.
You know, we dealt a little bit with that with
Seneca when Matt got hurt my last year. But Seneca
could play, he could play, you know, and so this
young guy will see, you know. I mean it would
be something he came in and just shot lights out,

(56:20):
that would really be something. But you can't put the
team in that position.

Speaker 2 (56:24):
Yeah, I mean, Haec was your true was your number
one backup for what least three years? Maybe us felt
pretty you must have felt pretty comfortable with him.

Speaker 6 (56:31):
Sure, no, and then you know we got him in
Cleveland and he did okay, but you know he he
but you know, you always have to have that plus drafting.
And I've told you this before. I always liked to
draft a quarterback and you know we did in the
fifth or sixth round or something later and then teach
him and let him play and teach him and then

(56:53):
who knows. You know, some of them went on to
do really fine things. So but I don't know if
that was in Minnesota. Is thinking quite honestly this year?

Speaker 2 (57:02):
All right, final thing for you, Mike, I need you
to take me behind the curtains a little bit here,
all right, without getting anybody in trouble, I bring this up. So,
the Seahawks had cornerback Darrien Kendrick was They picked him
up off waivers start of the year from La played
a bunch of football for Seattle this year, they've got there.
You know, you're in this roster gymnastics mode right now,

(57:23):
right this time of the year, you're trying to You're
you're cutting guys, you're signing guys, you're trying to float
guys through waivers. And two things. One, when you as
a coach and a GM what have you are talking
And I know the rules have changed a little bit
with ir and stuff, but still it's the same when
you're talking to whoever it is. If you're talking to
in Green Bay, you guys are sitting around and you're saying, Okay,

(57:45):
we want we got to make a move. Who do
we drop? And do we think that we can get
this guy back on our roster a week from now?
How do how do those conversations take place?

Speaker 6 (57:55):
Well, they're hard conversations, first of all, because I wasn't
a big fan of those things. You know, we had
our guys, we signed them, and I didn't expect a
lot of that happening at this time of the year.
You know, now, if injuries take place, but if you
have a practice squad, now what's seventeen and you still

(58:15):
have to go out to find somebody, you think then
then I don't know. I don't know how that works,
to be quite honest, you know, I like to keep
my guys. And if you know, ron Wolf was my boss,
and then in Seattle, I was the boss. So I
but I would let I would let Ted Thompson those

(58:35):
guys if they wanted to do something, come in and
talk to me about it, you know. But I was
rather reluctant to make moves unless you had just a
horrible injury problem. Then, like I said, we didn't have
a seventeen man practice squad, you know, and I would
think people you would go there, you know first, But

(58:58):
I don't know. But that's what you do. You sit
around and talk and you start phoning your friends on
other teams. What are you doing? And I say your friends,
not everybody.

Speaker 2 (59:09):
Well, because I yeah, Kendrick got picked up by the
RAMS day after Seal I release when they wanted to.
I know, they want to get him back on the
practice squad, but the RAMS claimed him pretty much immediately.
When that was when that happened, All right, here's here's
the behind the scenes part. Mike, tell me this, like
when you when when those roster moves are made, and
it's say it's it's Ted sitting there in Kirkland and
what have you. And do you say to the guy, listen,

(59:30):
we're gonna we're gonna cut you. It's we're gonna cut
you on Wednesday. So you already got paid for the
week on Tuesday, right, and we're gonna do that, but
we want to resign you next week. So don't jump
on a plane and go to the Bahamas or anything
like that. Just just hang tough. Do you have those
little whispers wink winks? Do you do that?

Speaker 6 (59:45):
Mike? Absolutely? Absolutely? And then then but then all of
a sudden you do that, and then about an hour
later the agent would phone with Reinfelder's phone somebody. I'd say, okay, okay,
that sounds good, but how are you going to sweepen
the pot a little bit? What are we going to
do here? Because you know, and then the agents starts fighting,

(01:00:05):
fighting for the player, so you know, you've got to
be ready for all that stuff. And there's a lot
of wink wings that go along.

Speaker 2 (01:00:12):
Really, that's what I was wondering. I wonder if there's
wink winks. And by the way, did you did you
notice that just that somehow Mike got a little shot
in at the agents just to the end there, just
got a little there's a little veiled shot.

Speaker 6 (01:00:24):
Well, if we had more time, we could talk a
lot about that. That's another No, that's another thing.

Speaker 2 (01:00:30):
Listen, I'm not doing that to you today. It's Thanksgiving.
I'm not I know how to poke. I know you know,
and I know that I know how to poke you
and get you going a little bit. I'm not going
to do that today. But there's certain there are certain
buttons that you can push in the Mike Homgrian world.
And let's just say that one of those near the
top of that list of the red buttons would be agents.

Speaker 6 (01:00:52):
Well, I don't like that. I don't. I don't like
just to see that side of me. No real want
to get in.

Speaker 2 (01:00:58):
I agree, I could put No, it's Thanksgiving, we're gonna
we're not gonna. We're not gonna get Mike all riled
up and he's gonna go and Kathy's gonna say, why
did you get him riled up? You brought up the
word agent, and that that's one of those things that
you just did not handle. You just didn't havendle. Well,
I know you are, I know you are, Mike. You
and your family have a great Thanksgiving and we'll talk

(01:01:19):
to you a week's time.

Speaker 6 (01:01:20):
You two in Happy Thanksgiving. You guys.

Speaker 2 (01:01:22):
There you go. That is the great Mike Homegren. Love
having him on every week, so much fun. We are
very thankful we get Mike Homegrin on our radio station,
Mondays and Fridays at the Morning Show, Wednesdays with Me,
Thursdays with Softy. It's just it's great to have Mike on.
The stories are fantastic and we love that. All right, Well,
take a break, come back. We get a little Factor fiction.
Maybe check the text line as well on nine three
point three KJFM. Where's that to go? Glad you're with us?

Speaker 1 (01:01:58):
It's your shot in our weekly and the ten thousand
dollars grand prize. It's Factor Fiction probably presented by Lucky
Eagle Casino and Hotel where every day Feels Lucky. Factor
Fiction is on Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.

Speaker 2 (01:02:20):
Factor Fiction brought to you by Lucky Eagle Casino and
Hotel and Jess, I gotta double check something I didn't okay, okay,
making sure this wasn't already pick it was not okay?
In fact, God am I the only guy split. Two
of us that have taken college games this week. Interesting,

(01:02:44):
All NFL on the Morning Show, All NFL on the
midday show before us were split, soon to be two
NCAA's and one NFL. And then Fame took you up
Oregon under fifty one and a half yesterday.

Speaker 7 (01:02:57):
I like that pick.

Speaker 2 (01:02:58):
Actually, Okay, here's what we're doing. A college football playoff
poll came out yesterday. We're talking about this with MJ
in the midday a little bit today. A lot going
on out there. There's a lot of what ifs, a
lot of scenarios being painted. One of those what ifs
involves ol Miss.

Speaker 3 (01:03:18):
Okay, if familiar foe.

Speaker 2 (01:03:20):
Lane Kiffin and ole Miss might have heard of him.
So will he stay? Will he go?

Speaker 6 (01:03:30):
Right?

Speaker 2 (01:03:30):
That's the question right now with ole Miss and Lane Kiffin.
They are ten and one, seemingly a lock to be
in the college football Playoff, but they have a little
roadblock on their way. It's called in state rival Mississippi State.
That is a nine am game on Black Friday for

(01:03:51):
us out here in the Pacific time zone. Ole Miss
playing at Mississippi State and Jess I am going with
Lane Okay, I'm going Lane Kiffin and ole Miss. They
are favor by seven Ole Miss minus seven, fact four

(01:04:14):
nine four five one, get after it, get a win
on Friday morning, by a noon, I'm gonna have a
win in our back pocket. Keep our winning streak alive,
keep on rolling with it. But I'm going to Old
Miss minus seven. Now most of well not most of them,
A good chunk of the country rooting against these guys.
Who's rooting against Ole Miss? All Mark James and all

(01:04:38):
his friends at Miami, BYU fans, Utah fans, Vanderbilt fans.
The list goes on. Ole Miss loses that game, and
if they do and Kiffin announces maybe afterwards that he's
going to Florida for LSU, I think Old Miss at

(01:04:59):
ten and two would have a hard time convincing the
committee that they're worthwhile to go to the college football Playoff,
even though committee chair and sitting in that seat makes
you automatically A dummy said the other day, well, we
don't know how they would be without the coach. We
haven't seen that. I'm like Florida State a couple of
years ago lost their quarterback and then we knew what
they looked like without the quarterback. That's why they voted.
I still think it's going to be hard if Ole

(01:05:19):
Miss loses. I don't think they will. I think they're
gonna come out. I haven't been much of a believer
in them. I thought Wazoo should have beat them, But
in this game, the Egg Bowl, I can't see it.
Mississippi State's last six of the last seven, the majority
of which have not been close. Their only win is
against Arkansas. Arkansas is awful. They've already fired their coach.

(01:05:42):
Ole Miss rolls Ole Miss minus seven fact four nine
four or five one. If you disagreed fiction four nine
four to five to one. Now what are you doing? Well,
you're trying to win ten thousand dollars grand prize or
a one thousand dollars weekly prize. If you're in contention
for the ten thousand dollars grand prize, you know it.
You're already there. You're all set to go. If you aren't,
you can still win a thousand dollars weekly prize. All

(01:06:03):
you have to do is get one correct pick during
the week and you will be automatically inner to win
one thousand dollars. Simple as that. So you text fact
if you agree, Ole miss minus seven fact. If you
disagree and think Mississity State's gonna win or cover, you
text fiction to four nine, four or five one right now.
It's all brought to you by the Lucky Eagle Casino
and Hotel where every day feels lucky. Got it, We're good.

Speaker 6 (01:06:29):
I like it.

Speaker 3 (01:06:30):
I think it's a good pick.

Speaker 7 (01:06:31):
And yeah, as much as I don't want to say
go ole miss or anything, I just think Mississippi, Mississippi
State is outmatched in this one by way more than
a touchdown.

Speaker 3 (01:06:43):
I see more facts than fiction.

Speaker 2 (01:06:44):
I see more facts, but I see way to be
fixed it. So oh, let's do this. Take a break,
let's figure out and get this thing fixed. We'll do
that next. All right, let's stake here of this business first. Uh,

(01:07:09):
the text line four factor fiction is working now. It
started working at about one forty one ish judging from
what I'm looking at, Ren, No, I'm wrong. It started
working at about two minutes ago. So we'll give you
the pick again. Hopefully you have at least twelve minutes,
but just send right away. You should get a bounce back,

(01:07:31):
Ole miss minus seven fact four four five one, Wow,
Miss Ole miss minus seven ole miss minus seven fed well,
text in right now, I'm texting, do that?

Speaker 6 (01:07:45):
Ten?

Speaker 7 (01:07:46):
I win?

Speaker 2 (01:07:46):
Am I eligible? Can you text and just make sure
something fiction? By the way, up yours? Did you get it?
Did you get a bounce back fiction? Thank you for
your text of fiction?

Speaker 3 (01:07:56):
I got I got one as well.

Speaker 2 (01:07:57):
Did you text fiction too?

Speaker 3 (01:07:59):
No?

Speaker 2 (01:07:59):
Okay you should. It's a stupid pick.

Speaker 8 (01:08:01):
That's a great pick. Guys are an awesome pick. The
whole team's gonna quit on him. Man, you think they're
gonna pull a? They're gonna pull a. You ever see
the movie Victory where they almost quitted halftime with Michael
Wayne Sylvester Stallone Pele. What if he they almost snuck
through the hole in the hot tub.

Speaker 2 (01:08:16):
What if here's the thing, what if he walks in
opposite of that tomorrow in the meeting the Thanksgiving me
at the hotel, he says, I'm gonna a national champion.
He's gonna pull a.

Speaker 8 (01:08:26):
Who's the guy in Wolf of Wall Street All capriouh
Wolf Jordan Wolf?

Speaker 5 (01:08:31):
Right?

Speaker 2 (01:08:32):
That was his name? That's one of the best movies ever. Well,
you know that was was that the name of the movie?
The guy I forget what his name was. But that's
I love that movie Wolf of Wall Street main character.
Nobody loves doing that more than this guy. Was his
namebody helped me out. It's not coming up. He hang on,
I'll look it up. I bet it's probably he's Wolfy

(01:08:55):
Is it Jordan? Four nine four five one? Tell us
who it is? People, Jordan Jordan. Okay, there you go,
all right, Yeah, what was your point? You know, well,
I don't really know. I don't know.

Speaker 8 (01:09:06):
He's gonna pull a He's gonna pull a Wolf of
Wall Street. I'm not leaving, that's right, that's right living,
I'm not if living. He's gonna smash the.

Speaker 2 (01:09:16):
Football against his head, eat a goldfish, some poor bastard
of his life bell Fort. Jordan Belfort. Sorry, yeah, Jordan
bell Fort. Yeah, my my apology. I just got my
want to go watch that movie later tonight. You don't
get home. That's that's Mitch Leavey's brother's college roommate. By
the way, who is Jordan Belfort? Did you know that?

Speaker 6 (01:09:35):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:09:36):
I went to college with his brother.

Speaker 5 (01:09:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:09:39):
A small world. I mean, that's okay to say, right, Yeah,
I'll take distant distant relatives random relatives of former kJ
our hosts for five hundred people.

Speaker 8 (01:09:51):
Famous distant relatives that we don't know about you, any
any Canadians or whatever. Back in the day, I don't
think famous ho about you anybody? No, Yes, Scottish descent,
Irish or Scottish.

Speaker 7 (01:10:03):
I'm Irish, but my brother in law is Scottish. We've
got a lot in my family.

Speaker 2 (01:10:07):
You have a brave heart that you know that was
in your family or whatever. Okay, No, but my.

Speaker 7 (01:10:14):
Great great great grandfather was actually one of the Manchester murders.
He was murdered for trying to free the Irish from
the evil empire that we know as Great Britain.

Speaker 2 (01:10:24):
Way to bring the room down. Okay. You ever see
the movie Hitch when Smith takes her to Ellis Island.

Speaker 8 (01:10:31):
Yeah, yeah, and he finds her grandpa and the manifest
of immigrants on Ellis Island and she starts crying. Yeah,
and it turns out the guy was like a mass
murder or something. Yes, you know, yeah, he was trying
to forget his name, and you opened up a scab.

Speaker 3 (01:10:44):
Who's famous because he was known as the Butcher and
he thought he was just a butcher.

Speaker 2 (01:10:48):
Butcher, right, Yeah, Like in the pigs and cows and stuff.
Who's your who's your famous relative?

Speaker 8 (01:10:52):
I don't think I really have one, although remember the
I used to get checks in the mail a long
time ago from the music comp and what was the
company that you would buy like cassettes and stuff from
all them.

Speaker 2 (01:11:06):
Exactly whatever? The TV Guyenny, and they send.

Speaker 8 (01:11:09):
You cassette tape if you had to sign up for
a service and give them ten bucks a month and
get you know a minimum of fifteen cassettes a year
or whatever like that.

Speaker 6 (01:11:17):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (01:11:17):
And I used to get checks, royalty checks. They thought
I was related to Gustav Maller, the composer. No way, Yeah,
for to God. And I actually sent him a letter
back and I said, I don't this isn't me and
they just cash. No, they just kept sending him over
to me. How much were they Not much? Twenty bucks,
three bucks?

Speaker 2 (01:11:33):
Not much.

Speaker 8 (01:11:34):
I guess it was significant. I would have cashed the
day this isn't work, going to jail over man.

Speaker 2 (01:11:38):
I guess my dad would have been the famous one, Yeah, Milt.
It would have been most far more famous face of
television and Seattle for decades. Built fresh right love that
I have.

Speaker 3 (01:11:46):
There are famous McIntyre's. But they spell their name wrong.

Speaker 7 (01:11:49):
Briba, Nope, she spells it with any Joey spells it wrong.

Speaker 2 (01:11:54):
Mike, Mike McIntyre, the former Colorado head coach.

Speaker 3 (01:11:56):
He spells it correctly, Okay, got it normally.

Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
How about the new Coloro State head coach Jim Mora
not a junior by the way, No, which is insanely dumb.
If I ever see Jim Mora the elder, I would say, dude,
if you're gonna name your kid James, can you just
go at the whole thing and make him a junior
like one guy's Lawrence, one guy's Frank. As far as
their middle name, I said, swore to God, that's true.
That's that's accurate. Act I just thought of the former
NBA coach Lawrence Frank.

Speaker 8 (01:12:20):
Yeah, why would you not freaking just name your kid
Jim Lawrence Mora and just be done with it.

Speaker 2 (01:12:25):
A junior, all right, he's a new coach at c
s U. How about that Columbia house by the way
you go, the one people are on top of it right,
means world man. Anyway, there was a horrible pick by
you to just put a bow on the whole thing.
I was a bad pick.

Speaker 6 (01:12:41):
There.

Speaker 8 (01:12:41):
They're gonna quit for that guy. They don't give a
damn undefeated week for us. Last Arnold undefeated. You better
have an undefeated week because you were about four inches
from the bottom up until last week.

Speaker 2 (01:12:51):
We had a terrible week, by the way, we were awful.
Win five. Yes, we had the championship on our sites. Hey,
I need to fact check something you said. You said
that he had a act. We had a five week.
We did. No, you said we did right according to
the thing you did. Yeah, no, don't forget it. I
found it there you go, all right, damn it, Yeah

(01:13:11):
you did.

Speaker 8 (01:13:12):
I asked, and misery loves company. We can suck together,
all right, thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:13:19):
Last people know what it's like to be on in
five We do all right, right, we do Petros at four. Okay,

Five, Mike Florio three, ten Lane, Lambert Wild join us
right before face off tonight with the stars.

Speaker 2 (01:13:33):
All right, you're on TV. I am gonna go doll
yourself up for the for the camera.

Speaker 8 (01:13:37):
It should take a couple hours. Well, you got about
four hours until face off. That should be plenty of time.
You think I think so, I don't think so. All right,
see Hoppy.

Speaker 2 (01:13:43):
