Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now from the Star Rentals Sports to Jordan ninety three
point three KJRFM sports headlines.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Headlin's brought to you by Frostproit cors I Choose Chill.
Seahawks made some roster moves today ahead of the game
on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Safety Jerk Reid was waived.
I'm sure he'll end up on the practice squad once
he clears waivers tomorrow. That makes room for wide receiver
Rashid Shaheed. They also signed wide receiver mac to Lean
to the practice squad. What does that mean? I'll explain
(00:27):
in a second, But it's actually good news, to be
honest with you. We'll get to that second. Jacoby Brissett.
We'll start for the Cardinals against the Seahawks this weekend.
We told you that yesterday. But why is that significant? Well,
Kyler Murray has now been placed on the injured reserve
list for the Arizona Cardinals. That thing ain't working out.
Breaking news, I know. Sale crack and take on the
Sharks tonight. San Jose Maclin celebrating with the bright young
Stars in the NHL the twenty twenty four first overall
(00:50):
draft pick. He's had a decent year. Eighteen points in
eleven games. Yeah that's okay. Six or three pre game
seven o'clock puck drop right here in your home for
the cracket Nie three point three. KJRFM announce their spring
trending schedule. Play god, how are you kidding me?
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Didn't it just end? Did baseball just end?
Speaker 4 (01:06):
Well?
Speaker 5 (01:06):
I mean it starts on February.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Twenty February see thirty one games, thirty two days, February twentie.
If it's the first game against sand Diego.
Speaker 5 (01:15):
Maybe they're following in the NFL's footsteps of making a
year round situation. Hey, we haven't had year round sometimes America,
we have.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Not had a year round. We've been lucky to get
through August most time. So we'll take it when we can.
A Nine semi finalists have been named in the coaching
category for the Hall of Fame class. Yes, you know,
Mikelngrin's one of them. But Bill Belichick is eailible for
this for the first time this year. Only when coach
can go in a year and so we kind of
know that is the path for Washington. As simple as
going ten and two. Now, I say, as simple to
(01:45):
go ten and two, you're going to be well assuming
that's assuming you beat Oregon to get to ten and two,
not like not like lose to somebody else along the way,
one of the slappies. You play Wisconsin, Purdue or UCLA
and then beat Oregon, that ten and two would be
a different type of ten and two. Ten and two
being win three, then beat Oregon ten and two. Are
(02:05):
you in for sure? Last Mandel If that's the case.
Coming up at one twenty, I'll get a Miami question
in for MJ and the Midday as well. He's all
jacked up about his Hurricanes. ACC big losers in the
first College Football Playoff rankings. I mean more than more
than likely the ACC, an alleged Power five conference Power
(02:27):
four conference, would be a one bid league for the
College Football Playoff. You know who else gets one bid?
The Group of four or group of five. Interesting, Now
there's a path to get other teams in there, but
everyone have to finish with two losses and then that's
coming to the expense of somebody else. The Big Ten
probably looking at a three bid conference. The SEC gets
(02:51):
all the rest plus Notre Dame. That's how it works.
So the more things change, the more things. They stay
the same, but we'll talk to Mandel College football coming
up at one twenty air week. We visit always like
doing that with him daily power play at one five
Big one tonight for the Crack and they continue to
try to stay unbeaten at home this year. It is
a hell of a start, best starting franchise history. The
problem is our our buddy Rory out here, sales guy Rory.
(03:12):
You know him, right, Jess? You have you met sales
guy Rory? Do I introduce you to him? I mean, okay,
you know who he is?
Speaker 5 (03:17):
Okay, are you kidding me? He's amazing to us.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
No, he's a great guy. Roy says. Is everybody in
the Western Conference the NHL good this year? I'm like, yeah, unfortunately, Yes,
the answer is yes. Like the Western Conference one through
sixteen is really good. And San Jose used to be
the doormat. They're pretty good. They're decent. They got two
bright young stars Will Smith and Celebrity you'll see tonight
at the game. You can hear it here in KJR.
You can watch it. It's actually on King tonight too.
(03:41):
It's a King game. So we had to put the
better suit on today because it's a bigger game. Yeah,
but yeah, so it's everyone's good, big game tonight, and
then they go on the road for two at Saint
Louis out Dallas on Saturday Sunday. So it just continues
this eighty two game marathon of a schedule the NHL.
So we'll get to that. Let's get to the Seahawk
news real quick before we get to Mandel. So Mike
McDonald spoke just a short time ago. Everything's kind of
(04:04):
pushed back because of the late game on Sunday. They
got to a little different schedule this week. A lot
of times we'll have a player on Wednesdays. We're not
gonna do that today, just because everything was later. Mike
McDonald just finished speaking a few minutes ago. Big thing
he said, and I think this is the key, and
I mentioned the roster move they made. This is a
This is really good news for the Seahawks because when
they traded for Rashid Shaheed, a lot of folks were wondering, Uh, oh,
(04:29):
you start start connecting some dots. Like I know, we're
in sports radio and sports media. We don't always like
to use like common sense, not like one of our fortes,
not our strong suit is not common sense. But if
you use common sense, you're like, wait a second, hmm,
she heed coming in. Cup missed the last game. That's
(04:49):
bad news. That's really bad news. Both Cooper Cup and
Ernest Jones will do something at practice today. Now it's
gonna be kind of a walk through, so a limited practice.
My guess is, judging from the fact that the weather's
not great and they're playing on turf, they'll be indoors.
I think they did everything. I'm guessing most of everything
(05:11):
they did last week is on grass because they played
on alleged grass in Washington, although it's not really grass there.
It's just painted sand, but it's awful. It's but I
think they're gonna be insight. So the fact that those
two guys are doing something, Cooper Cup specifically, but also
Ernest Jones. They'll practice to some varying degrees today we
used to walk through. That's a really good sign. And
(05:32):
the fact that they cut Jerrick Reid and brought another
receiver in on the practice squad probably a good thing
as well. That means that Cupp and Jones are obviously
not headed to the practice squad, at least not right now,
which is very very good, very good news. Rashid shi
Heat spoke to the media today paraphrasing him, but just
kind of give you the summary. The big thing is
he says he's not only jack to be here now,
(05:54):
he wants to be here in the future. Remember he's
on expiring contract.
Speaker 5 (05:59):
So he's good to hear his first day well.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
And I'm sure when the trade was made. Sometimes players
are consulted, right and sometimes not. Sometimes they're kind of
giving a heads up. I'm there was probably a pretty
decent market for his services out there.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
This is a place.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Under Mike McDonald, with the culture they run right now,
with the facilities, how they treat the players that guys
want to come to, players talk around the league. They
know what's going on, they know what everything's about.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Now.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
They're not going to resign him tomorrow to a long
term extension anything like that. I'm sure they're going to
treat it just like Leonard Williams three years ago, and
they'll treat it like that. They'll treat it like Ernest
Jones last year. Let's let's see what we've got. You're
in our building, and if it's a fit on the field,
off the field, in the in the rooms everything else. Yeah, man,
why wouldn't you resign them? Why wouldn't you bring this
(06:47):
guy back? And all of a sudden, you've got to
because I think Cooper Cup's probably won and done.
Speaker 5 (06:52):
I mean, considering his age, experience and injury history, I
would say that.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
That tracks maybe not maybe he's your number four guy.
Next year.
Speaker 5 (07:01):
It'd be awesome.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
He'd be incredible number four. Sorry, Jake Bobo, but that
would be a great number four looking ahead, but this
is this year. But yeah, they're gonna look and see
what this guy has and bring it up. But the
fact that he's gonna he wants to be here, you
like hearing that. That's a good thing. So anyway, that's
kind of the news from the Seahawks today. Jacobe Prisett.
We knew yesterday wasn't was gonna start, and I think
(07:24):
kind of like, what, well, really are we still gonna
go down that road? You're coming off a big win
and everything else. Well, Kyler Murray's not working out and
that's obvious. And then on top of that, he's now
hurt enough for they're gonna put him on injured list,
so he'll be out for the next few weeks. Their
season isn't entirely lost in Arizona, but it's kind of lost.
I don't think four teams in the same division are
(07:45):
gonna make the playoffs, so.
Speaker 5 (07:46):
They're definitely stumbing downhill right now.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
They are they are. It's too bad too, because Gannon's
a good coach man. There's a buy in factor there
with them. I I like watching them play. They play hard.
They may not have the best talent, they may they
got some issues. Marvin Harrison hasn't proven to be what
they thought he would be necessarily things like that, and
Kyler they don't have a quarterback because Kyler ain't it.
That's pretty obvious that he ain't it. But they play hard.
(08:11):
For Gannon, man, they play hard, and I had noticed
that his first year when we were down there covering
the games. Last game I covered actually for Fox, and
I remember watching that thing thinking Seale was just gonna roll.
They played hard, but we go back. I was just
talking about that with MG in the midday a minute ago.
You know, he used the twenty twelve comparison with the Seahawks,
and I pointed out to this to him. I use
(08:32):
that a lot. I used twenty twelve a lot over
the years after twenty twelve, and really kind of after
twenty sixteen, Like I think I probably threw out a
twenty twelve reference, and every year from twenty nineteen on
through Pete's last year here ah kind of feels like
they're they're at the start of something new. They probably weren't.
Obviously they weren't because it didn't come to fruition. But
(08:56):
maybe the big reason was is that twenty twelve was
Pete's second year, third year, sorry it was this third year.
But by then they'd flushed the roster. Remember they had
made over three hundred roster moves over those first couple
of years, and they'd flushed things out, but they had
created a culture, They had created something inside that building.
And MJ were and I were talking about that, and
(09:17):
he said he brought up the Jered Reid conversation I
had not last week with Jen Reid, but the Jener
Reid conversation we had last spring. And when I asked
Jaron Reid, I said, why are you here not? Why
are you here with the Seahawks. Why are you here
in a non mandatory ota like you're eleven years in dude,
Like you don't have to be here. Yeah, and he says,
(09:37):
because I'm that's my job, and we're there. Was a
complete and total buy in. And I remember the the
the non mandatory ota, specifically seeing DeMarcus Lawrence even when
he was banged up a little bit, seeing Chenna even
though he couldn't practice out there, Jaron Reid out there,
(09:58):
Leonard Williams out there, all those guys out there. The
buy in was there. That's what happened in twenty twelve
and thirteen and fourteen. And the buy in and the
culture is huge. If you don't have that, you don't
have anything. And I bring up that because one of
the things that helped and probably why we didn't see
(10:18):
twenty twelve all over again Russ in his waiting years
here in Seattle and then after the first year of Gino,
those guys weren't buying in. They weren't buying into what
Pete was doing, and GINO didn't buy into what Mike
McDonald was doing. Sam donald has starts right there, starts
right there. The bien has to start with your veterans
on the defensive side and your quarterback. They don't have
(10:42):
that in Arizona, obviously, with Kyler, but they have it
here in Seattle with Sam Darnold. So if you want
to make the twenty twelve comparisons, I'll dance with you there.
Because of Sam Donald, and I can make the argument
that even though Russ was a rookie in twenty twelve,
and Sam's is a veteran, still a younger veteran, not
a lot of a lot of tread on those tires.
You know, Sat was a backup in San Francisco. I'll
(11:03):
dance with you there. I'll dance with you there, all right.
Fournite four to five one. That is the text line,
four nine, four to five one. We'll take a break,
come back talk some college football. We got our guy,
Stuart Mandel. College football playoff rankings are out, Husky fans,
you want to take a listen to this Coming up next.

(11:53):

enjoy responsibly now Stuart Mandel on your home for college
football Saturdays, Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
Oh Man, here we go Stuart Mandel weekly visit, talking
all things college football. And we got a lot to
get to today, including I'm gonna weave this in here
at some point. How does Wazoo figure into the college
football playoff scenario? Not for them to get in Oregon State,
thanks rob Aky. No no, but there's a couple of
teams that are probably hoping for some success in their
(12:28):
final couple of games. We'll get to that in a second. Stewart,
First of all, how are you, my friend? I'm good,
I'm good. College football playoff rankings came out. I'm gonna
bury that lead for a second. I want to I'm
gonna get to that in a heartbeat. Because you had
something in your mail bag this week and I it's
it's interesting. Jason Dee is a guy that sent it
to you, and I was thinking the same thing as
(12:49):
a college football fan, as someone who you know, frankly
watches a lot of it. Uh, and for a variety
of reasons. But and then also honestly, like sometimes has
to be balance it with my other job doing hockey
for the Kraken, and you know what games am I
going to tape and watch later? And so on and
so forth. And Jason Dee asked you about the Big
(13:11):
Ten and does it have an inventory problem? And I thought, man,
that resonates. And what he's kind of referring to is
the ratings. Yes, they're good, but they're not what they
what I think they would want them to be. If
you're Abe, if you're a CBS right and so forth,
and proud of it is because is it not, Stuart,
(13:32):
They're so big now, I mean Oregon and Rutgers, sorry, Washington's.
Washington's remaining schedule is abysmal until they get to Oregon,
Like none of those games we care about. Uh So,
so tell me this, what is the big is the
Big Ten? I mean, they probably don't care, but do
they have a problem at all with with too many teams?
Speaker 6 (13:52):
I think they have inadvertently diluted their products, which probably
didn't seem you know, possible at the time a couple
of years ago. It's like, oh my gosh, we're adding USC,
we're adding Oregon. Washington was coming off of appearance in
the National title game. This is great, but obviously they
don't all play each other for one thing. And then
(14:14):
I think a big difference between the Big Time and
the SEC expansions is thou and Texas are pretty natural
fits in that conference. It only took me into the
second maybe last year there was some like, oh, I
can't believe Texas is playing this, but now it just
seems totally natural to me. Still seems very unnatural when
you get to a Saturday and it's like, oh, big
game on CBS this week it's you know, Oregon against Wisconsin,
(14:40):
the USC against Maryland, Like they're just not games you're
gonna be like, oh yeah, I definitely need to watch that.
Whereas when these teams are with their West Coast schools
like Oregon Washington State, it doesn't seem to matter. It
doesn't matter to me whether Washington State's good not good
compared to Producer or something. I just would other see
(15:00):
them play their natural rival. So I think this year
has been kind of a perfect storm for the Big Ten,
where it's extremely top heavy. Penn State was supposed to
be one of your blockbuster teams. This year they obviously
fell apart, So yeah, they just haven't the discrepancy between
when you see here's the SEC triple header on ABC
(15:20):
this week and they're all top twenty five games, you know,
off the top ten games, and then here's the Fox, CBS,
NBC Big Ten lineup, and you're like, really, that's what
they're paying for. And so we might turn out just
to be a one off thing. But right now, I mean,
considering that we often grouped those two teams together, I mean, sorry,
those two conferences together as like the Power Too. It's
(15:45):
not that's not how has it played out either on
the field or in the TV ratings this year.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
I would just even go to the point of and
I guess this is kind of the part I like
when they put those four teams into the Big Ten,
and we understand why, big markets and big brands and
all that stuff, but like Washington going two years without
playing USC, what the hell like this? It makes no sense?
And yeah, really stupid. And I know maybe it's a
(16:11):
and you can't predict who's going to be good and
who's not right, you can't you can't really do that.
But at the same time, like you're playing Purdue in
Wisconsin and Rutgers and Maryland as opposed to playing USC
in one of those games. I mean, if you're trying
because if we're being honest, all these conferences are trying
to do is sell TV, avenue, revenue and and all that. Right,
wouldn't those all be more comp wouldn't Washington and USC
(16:32):
be more complaint than any of those games?
Speaker 6 (16:35):
I think so they might say, oh, we have to
keep the schedules balanced and competitive integrity and blah blah blah.
But from a tea product TV product standpoint, me eight, Box, AVYT,
Foxy differently, if you're paying over a billion dollars to
show these games a year, it's crazy. And then the
ratings come out, it's like, gosh, they're getting there. Cox
cleaned by ABC.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
Stuart Maandel join us from The Athletic the Audible Podcast. Okay,
let's get to the college football playoffrank because it came
out yesterday. I'm sure every Husky fan knows that they
are ranked number twenty three. We'll get to that in
just a couple of seconds. Ohio State number one, Indiana,
Texas A and m Alabama Georgia Ole miss BYU Texas Tech,
Oregon Notre Dame Texas. I stop at eleven because eleven
of those teams, eleven teams will get in, plus a
(17:17):
group of five school So let's go through just kind
of some of the wins in the night.
Speaker 6 (17:22):
Now the ACC is ranked outside the top twelve.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
As well, right now ten ten even better. I was
going to go down the ACC road just for a second,
because the highest ACC team is Virginia at fourteen Louisville
at fifteen.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
ACC based on what.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
Came out yesterday and what we kind of know in
the final four weeks of the season, ACC, can we
safely say is a one bid conference.
Speaker 6 (17:48):
Almost? I think it's almost close to that. I mean
the wrinkle would be, I mean, first of all, there's
five or six teams that can still get into the
ACC title game. You can come down some crazy tie rakers.
So for example, if Miami ends up winning out in
this ten and two but misses out in the championship game,
you know, by then I would think they'd be in
(18:09):
the mix for an at large Perth and then the
other one that's kind of obvious, Georgia Tech plays Georgia
at the end of the year. So if they beat Georgia,
they become very attractive as in that large candidate.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
But that's it.
Speaker 6 (18:20):
That's basically their only hope at this point.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Big twelve kind of a winner yesterday. They've got two
teams inside that top ten bubble.
Speaker 6 (18:29):
That you can see the committee as respect for those
top three teams in the Big twelve, especially Utah who's
not probably not going to make the playoffs but is
already up to thirteen, which of course helps YU and
Texas Texas they both beat Utah. There's a very I
think everybody assumed all the Big twelve is only gonna
be a one bid league. Well, then you see those
(18:51):
two teams rank safely in the top ten. They're going
to play each other this weekend, and then they may
play each other again in the conference championship game. So
if they were to split those games, then I would
think they have a very good chance of getting both
of them in.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Stuart Mandel joining US. Is there a path for Utah
to get in? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (19:11):
I think the path is anarchic. First of all, you know,
is there they're just it just you know, in these
big conferences, and we talk about in balanced schedules. We
often talked about the teams that got it easy. Just
bad luck for Utah that they got both of those
two top ten teams and they lost. The computers say,
(19:31):
Utah is a top ten playoff caliber team, but what
are you supposed to do if you lose your two
games where you had the best chance to get a
big resume win. So it's possible, but it feels to
me like they're kind of boxed out right now unless
they can kind of backdoor their way into the conference
championship games.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
Stuart, it feels as if, and maybe I'm wrong here,
but just when I look at this on the surface,
it does appear that, you know, there's a lot of
different metrics that we can look at, and that the
committee i'm sure does look at. Did strength of schedule
in this for in these first rankings matter or more?
Or did did wins and losses and maybe specifically losses
(20:09):
that right hand column matter more? What do you think
they put more at it? It appears to me that
that losing games meant more than than you know, actual
strength of schedule in this first round.
Speaker 6 (20:21):
It's always you know the thing about polls, right, It's
always been grouped by the tiers are the group by
a number of losses, and that has become a that
was a big criticism at the end of last year
from the SEC where they're saying, hey, our three lost
teams are better a year or two off teams, which
I did not agree with last year. But I talked
(20:41):
in the mailbag about Texas. You know, there you could
have a situation where Texas, if you know, they have
two games coming up against top five teams Georgia and
Texas A and M, and if they win one of
those and lose the other, you look at what that
profile would look like. They'd be nine to three, they
would have three at least top twenty five, possibly top
fifteen wins. Yes, they would have three losses one and
(21:04):
would be as the number one team in the country,
so in another top five one as well. So that
would be a team that you would look at and say, oh, yeah,
I think this team at nine to three should be
ranked higher than this other team at ten and two.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
And I'm gonna circle back to Texas in a second
after this question. So obviously out here in Seattle a
lot of interest in Washington and what they've got going
on Washington's remaining schedule with two losses on the docket
at Wisconsin versus Purdue at home at UCLA. By all accounts,
they should win those three games and roll in at
(21:41):
nine and two against Oregon at home the final game
of the season. If if Washington wins out and they
finished ten and two, and they'd have a win over
Oregon and Illinois, assuming Oregon and I'll get to them
in a second, at Washington at ten and two, two
are they would you think that there's no doubt that
(22:03):
Washington at ten and two would be in or so
this scenario at you Stu, like I'm wondering with Oregon,
is Washington actually as bad as this might be for
Husky fans to think? If you're Washington, are you rooting
like hell that Oregon better win a game against Iowa
this weekend and still be up in that top ten?
Speaker 4 (22:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (22:26):
I mean, I guess the ideal scenario for Washington would
be that they are that they go into that game
and it's basically winner get the playoff spot, which you
if they're nine to two and they're playing a ten
and one Oregon team, they win and obviously that would
give them the edge over Oregon. I guess the other
one you have to think about is Michigan, because Michigan
(22:46):
would get in over Washington. But you know that's what
that would require, Michigan being orio state again. So right now,
the Big ten looks to me to be max three teams,
and I think right now everybody seems Oregon would be
the third, but out necessarily. I mean, they have a
tough schedule down the stretch, starting at Iowa. So let's
say Oregon goes nine to three, then somebody I would
(23:08):
think out of Iowa, Michigan, and Washington that one of
those teams would get attendant too and make the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
And so and I bring it up for this reason.
If let's say Oregon beats let's say Oregon splits the
Iowa or in USC games, right, Like, let's say they
split those two games, and so you know they come
in there and to Washington. Washington beats them. But if
you just mentioned, like Michigan wins out, Michigan's going to
go as a ten and two team over Washington, right, Yeah, now.
Speaker 6 (23:39):
They can both go. You know, I think sometimes we
you look at that, you know, rankings that they are. Oh,
it's like somebody are like, oh Miami their eighteenth, they're done. Well,
teams are these those teams are all going to lose, right,
this is college football, But very few of these teams
will all when people like, well, this team wins out
and this team went no, they're not, that's not going
to happen. They're all going to lose and the next
(24:01):
So the teams that do win out have a chance
to move up quite a bit. It's been pointed out
that ASU wasn't even ranked right first two rankings last season.
Speaker 4 (24:09):
Right.
Speaker 6 (24:10):
I remember the first year in twenty fourteen in Ohio
State won the national title. They were like seventeenth in
the first rankings and they worked their way to the
top four. So yeah, all which is to say, like,
right now it might look like Washington can they make it?
Can't they make it? I mean, if they're ten and
two by the end of the rankings, they might be safely.
Speaker 2 (24:27):
In Well here's the thing. I mean, like you just
brought up Texas. Let me throw another team out to Tennessee.
If Tennessee wins out, they're going to be well. They
play the traditional SEC you know, Patty Kate game against
New Mexico State, next week. They're off this week, then
they play out Florida, and then they finish off against Vanderbilt.
If Tennessee wins out twenty fifth right now, SEC team
(24:49):
that wins out and has three losses, Washington wins out
Texas ends up, as you mentioned, coming in with the
three losses. When it's all said and done, then what
do we looking at? I mean, I think that's when
the debate begins, right SEC versus Big ten. If you
have a couple three loss SEC teams and a ten
and two Washington team, but that ten and two Washington
team beat basically only Oregon in sort of Illinois this year,
(25:13):
then you what do you do?
Speaker 6 (25:14):
Then have a hard time seeing Tennessee because they just
don't I don't even know why they're ranked. To be
perfectly honest, they have no big wins of any kind
after losing to Oklahoma. I think the debate that that
lad and you can already see it brewing.
Speaker 4 (25:28):
Now.
Speaker 6 (25:28):
It's not going to be nine and three SEC versus
ten and two Big ten. It's going to be nine
to three SEC versus giving the Big twelve, where the
ACC a second team, that's what the setam and the
SEC has has driven the whole how we're looking. We
have these new schedule metrics and ey that was all
in response to the SEC backlash at the end of
the season, to the audacity of SMU and Indiana getting
(25:51):
in over their teams.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
Well, it's gonna be good. I'll be honest with you, Stewart.
I think it's entertaining as hell. I mean, and you're
doing a podcast or right, and a couple of podcasts
we can put and writing the stories. I mean, I
know people hate rankings or not, people some do like
and I'm like, no, man, this is why brankings are fun.
Because we have all these debates. It's college football. And
it goes back to our first thing we talked about.
You have all these teams in the Big ten, so
(26:13):
it's not like the NFL. It's not apples to apples.
You're having to kind of compare and contrast and look
at all kinds of different metrics in all those things.
And then you run into the power. You know, the
group of I guess what are we now? A group
of five? Right? Group of five is what does these days?
The group of five schools one of those teams gets
in right now, I think it's what is it Memphis
(26:34):
or JMU, San Diego State.
Speaker 6 (26:36):
None of them were in the top twenty five right,
none of them are top twenty five. But they said,
the committee said, you know, that team right now would
be Memphis. They would be the highest rand.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
They would be okay, so Memphis will be so an
AAC seems to have the inside track. But what about
San Diego State if they were to win out and
then they would mean I mean, they got if they
went out, they got one loss, They're one to Washington State. JM.
You they've got Washington State in a couple of weeks.
They need to beat Wazoo and then I'm sure at
(27:08):
the same time, if you're San Diego State, you're hoping,
like hell, Wazoo wins that game to help their metrics
a little bit as well. Wazoo actually factors into the
college football playoffs. Do That's what I'm getting to buddy, Yeah.
Speaker 6 (27:18):
Yeah, Wazoo has a chance to have You looked, there's
like six teams that are in playoff contention that played
Wazoo this year. I'm sure they are all rooting for
Wazoo to finish strong.
Speaker 7 (27:27):
Here.
Speaker 6 (27:28):
You know, whether you're Virginia and you're trying to show
you have a quality non conference win. Or North Texas
right like they want to show because they could be
from the AAC, like, hey, we beat the crap out
of those guys. So yeah, and Washingtate's not going to playoff,
but they they're going to show up on like six
different teams resumes.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
North Texas, Navy, Memphis all sitting with one loss in
the AAC just in the AC. Yeah, Ole miss obviously
is thinking about them as well. Washington's thinking about them
as well. They need that to look a little better.
Oregon State loss, that organ State loss, Jess, it didn't
just hurt you and me to our soul. It hurt
other teams to their soul. It hurt Lane Kiffin. Lane
(28:09):
hurt Lane Kiffin is what it did. It hurt, It
hurt Jed Fish. Actually that makes me happy all those
things happen, Stuart, any any updates on college football coaching searches?
Is Jed Fish on his way to Florida? What's going on?
Speaker 6 (28:22):
I think the first Domino to follow the Virginia Tech
James Franklin, Like, it wouldn't surprise me if that gets
announced before the season. End of the season, right, because
James Franklin isn't doing anything. If that doesn't happen, it
might be because Franklin is holding out and saying, maybe
I can get something better, you know, if I wait
on Florida or unles you or something like that. But
(28:44):
that those two have been kind of connected for a while.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
Now I joke about Jed. Let me let me just
kind of as we look around at the openings, is
the Washington job better than many, if not all, of
the jobs that are opened all things considered at Spectations
Resources conference, Like, is the Washington job, how would you
say compared to say Florida?
Speaker 6 (29:08):
Right, It's a really good job, which is why it's
kind of weird if that were to happen that it'd
be twice in a row that it became a springboard job.
But it's a big ten job, and so I mean,
I would certainly rather be there than at like Oklahoma
State or Virginia Tech or some of those schools. Arkansas. Yeah,
(29:30):
I don't I'm not hearing any buzz about jet Fish
right now. But we just talked about a scenario where
when their last four games make it to the playoff
and then yeah, I think he would become a hot page.
Speaker 2 (29:38):
Yeah, and I bring that up, like to me, Ucla,
you don't want to go there, They just facilities and
everything else. Know, even though he's got the connection there,
I think Washington is a better job. And I think
Florida is an interesting one because you know, right, you
look at Florida, what do you do, Like if you
go ten and two but you don't make the playoffs
or nine and three don't make the playoffs, you're on
the hot seat here. You do that, you're going to
(29:59):
get an extension, right, and you're in the big ten still,
So I don't it's yeah, it's a personal it's personal preference,
but probably a better job.
Speaker 6 (30:07):
I guess if nothing else that it's going to get
him a raise and an extension.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
Oh that's one hundred percent. Yeah, Matt Rule, Did Signetti
got that right? I mean, Eric Morris is the only
guy that might want to go somewhere anywhere because we
get the hell out of North Texas. All right, my friend,
Thank you, sir. We'll talk to you next week. Tell
you about the Audible and the podcast and everything that going
on there.
Speaker 6 (30:27):
Yeah, the Audible every Sunday morning. Uh, and Tuesdays and
Thursdays as well wherever you get your podcasts and on
YouTube as well.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
Thank you, my friend. We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 6 (30:36):
All right, Thank you.
Speaker 2 (30:37):
There you goes Stewart Mandel joining us from the Athletic
We've got ourselves a daily power play and that's coming
up next.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
Are at one backer Now man, this is the Daily
power Play, Hockey Baby on your home for the Kracking
Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM set Seattle Crack.
The Daily power Play is brought to you by Sakwahonda, Caboda,
(31:20):
the log just inventory of Caboda Equipment and Kane County.
Now your daily look at the National Hockey League and
the Seattle Kraken with the Infernets.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
Daily power Player.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
Home for the crack of nine three point three k
jr FM Krack and San Jose. Tonight, first of three
meetings this season between the teams, first of two here
in Seattle over the next couple of weeks. They'll finish
off the season series here at least on November fifteenth.
How do I know that, Jess, Well, we gave away
tickets yesterday on Cracking Ticket Tuesday to the game a
week from Saturday coming up when Maclin Celebrini, Will Smith
(31:56):
and company roll back into town. Good young hockey team,
Big testa knight for the crack Canna sayundefeated at home
and regulation this year. Chandler Stevenson's had a nice start
to the season as well, really done a good job
on the PK and also helping run the power play
which is vastly improved, and Mike Benton caught up to
him this morning.
Speaker 8 (32:14):
For the third period. The more consistent, the more calm
that this team can be, the better results are going
to basically show up in a rise that How much
does that work really apply for what this team has
built so far through twelve games.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
Yeah, I think that's huge.
Speaker 7 (32:26):
You know, anytime you can hold a lead, you know,
when teams are pressing, kind of give it back to them.
When teams are pressing and you have a lead, that's huge.
And yeah, I think with consistency, it's just the more
you're in those situations and the more games you win
and points you kind of put in the bank in
(32:48):
certain situations, even coming back and getting a point or
two points, it's just, yeah, builds confidence for the team.
I mean, it's a lot different when you know you're
blowing every lead and losing every game of no confidence
and you're just kind of waiting for it to happen.
So yeah, I think that that's been a huge part of,
(33:09):
you know, just kind of the success that we've had
here early.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
You're wondering if coaching makes a difference Cracking twelve games in. Yes,
they're off for the best start in franchise history. But
what Mike was talking to Chandler about is pretty simple,
playing close games. Twelve games in. They've played seven one
goal games out of twelve already this season. Added to
that six times they've gone to overtime or a shootout
this year, and play past sixty minutes. Teams playing close
(33:34):
games are not allowing a lot of goals. They're not
scoring a ton of goals either, but they're used to it.
They seem to be comfortable in that lane Lambert system
should be.
Speaker 3 (33:41):
I'll just tell you this.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
You going tonight, or if you're watching on King TV,
or if you're listening here on KJR, expect another tight game.
Going into the third period, Kracking have only led. This
is crazy. They've only had one lead after twenty minutes
of play, so far this season. One time they've been
leading after one period. Yet they're still listening there with
that great record so far this season.
Speaker 3 (34:02):
All right, a lot to come up on the show today.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
We're gonna check in with our friend Mike Holmgren in
just a couple of minutes. Also, we got I got
a good factor of fiction pick today of shall we
say local interest Jess, I've got a local interest factor
fiction pick coming up today.
Speaker 5 (34:18):
Oh what a tease.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
That's a big tease. Your chance one one thousand dollars
coming up today. That will be at two thirty five.
Mike Holmgan is going to join us next. We'll talk
about Sam Darnold. Obviously, his start to the game the
other day is first half is perfect. First half of
the Seahawks against the Commanders. I'll talk to him about
the philosophy that goes into making a trade like they
(34:42):
did yesterday for Rashid Shaheed. Mike's been in those meetings.
He understands that there's some people critical of the trade
because of the draft equity they gave up. I think
it tells more about who and what these guys are.
So we'll talk about that with Mike Holmgran coming up
they're in a go for it mode. I love that
off that philosophy. I wish every sports professional sports franchise
(35:04):
had that don't always work out, makes mistakes along the way,
but you gotta like that philosophy. Mike holmgrenn coming up
Factor Fiction two thirty five right here by three point

Chill. That's Ron Jesse okay always. Seahawks made some moves
today waves safety Jered Red signed ride receiver to add
wide receiver Rashid Shihi to the regular roster. They signed
Macdalin to the practice squad. Michael Donell saying today that
even though they're having kind of light practice walk through
l like type today, Cooper cup Enters Jones will be
(35:51):
involved at least in some phases of practice today. That's
good news. They're not going on the ir. It doesn't
sound like Jacoby Brisett will start for the Cardinals against
the Seahawks this weekend. Hej Stroud ruled out for the
Houston Texans krack and take on the Sharks to night
Climate Pledge Arena six thirty pre game seven o'clock puck

to his Mike standing by almost We're close.
Speaker 5 (36:34):
Coach is always standing by for us.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
Let's go.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
As part of our non stop coverage of the NFL.
Your home for the twelfth man proudly precints former Seahawks

and that's what makes Toyota of Kirkland so special. And
(37:01):
by R and R Foundation specialist serving Western Washington for
over twenty years now, Mike Holmgren with the Inverness.
Speaker 5 (37:16):
All right, so let that man talk to you before
two forty five.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
Mike Holmegrin joins us. Right now, Mike, my apologies, I
was a little distracted. You're You'll find this hard to believe.
As I'm going on the air and the Mike homegrinn
Open is playing, a guy walks in here and says, hey,
are you on the air, What are you doing? When
are you coming back when you're on the air. His
name's David Maller. You might know him.
Speaker 4 (37:38):
I do know him, and he just popped in on
you just.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
Like wanted to have a conversation about something that had
absolutely nothing to do with sports or radio or anything professional.
I'll just leave it at that.
Speaker 4 (37:49):
Yeah, no, I know, and you know in your headlines though,
I got it, man, I was you know, it was
just we've just finished watching the baseball playoffs, yes I know,
in the World Series, and now you're talking about and
catchers like.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
I'm not ready for it, sir, I'm not ready for it.
I'm not ready.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
Well, good to have you on, sir, appreciate it. As always,
we got a lot to get to you today. I
want to start and you know, like when we do
this segment for people that have listened to Mike and
I for the last I don't know, five, six, seven
years how long we've been doing this. It's been a
First of all, I love it. It's one of my
favorite things to do to get to talk to Mike
Homran every week. And I get people all the time saying, man,
what's it like you get to talk to coach? And
sometimes he comes in studios. I said, it's great. I said,
(38:28):
it's Mike's one of us. He wants to come in
and just kind of hang out and b s with
us and talk. And I love the stories. People love
the stories. But I also like when you and I talk,
you've you've already done your x's and o's and things
like that. I like to kind of talk bigger picture
with you and just kind of philosophy and kind of
lean on your experience. And there's a bunch of things
to do that with today, So I'm gonna I'm gonna
(38:50):
gonna do that. Let me start first with and I'll
get to Rashid shi heat in a second and the
bigger picture part of that. Let me first with we
talked people here have talked a lot about Hey, this
is this feeling like you know, is twenty twenty five
feeling like twenty twelve again, or maybe two thousand and
(39:11):
one or two or three with Mike or twenty twelve.
People like you know, there are we starting to see
kind of the start of something really special in a
nice run. And part of that, to me always is
the buy in part of it. Let me go back.
You had to you rebuilt Green Bay, you rebuilt this
franchise here. You had to get something established a foundation,
(39:31):
and then get the buy in from certain guys. What
goes into it, Like when you're going into a nuke job.
If if a coach came into you tomorrow and said, hey, Mike,
I I just got the job in. I'm just looking
through Kellen Mors only been there one year. I want
to do that to him. Tennessee, somebody gets a Tennessee
job and they call you up and say, hey, they're
one and eight. Now, let's say they finished like two
(39:51):
and fifteen, and you know they've got a quarterback in
cam We think, but Mike, how do you how do
you build something? How do you start something in a
place that's coming off a two and fifteen season. What's
the first steps in building that culture.
Speaker 4 (40:05):
Well, I think the first step time I'm going to
probably state the obvious here is that when you talk
to the team for the first time to make sure
that they understand what your ideas are. Let's not talk
about blocking and tackling and anything right now, Let's just
talk about what you want to see from them as teammates,
(40:27):
as helping each other, as being hard working, all those
all that stuff that you talk about that goes into
preparing a team. And Ian, I'll tell you what there
are times then after you're there for a little while,
and it doesn't have to be very long, that you
all of a sudden you pick out and it's sometimes
(40:50):
it's obvious, sometimes it's a little subtle, but you pick
out some people that just aren't willing to do that.
They're just not they like the former guy, or they're
not used to the way you do things. Then it's
a matter of figuring out how to make the changes,
how to trade them, how to get them out of
the building, how to get replacements and things like that.
(41:12):
So they talk about all the time, culture, the culture, right, well,
what does that mean? That means, you know, being a
good team, being a good teammate, respecting each other all
that kind of verbiage, but it's true, and that's where
you start that.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
And I mean, here's the thing. I also think it
has to help me out here. I'm sure ownership has
to come into play too. And I'll just go back
nineteen ninety nine when you got you got here in
nineteen ninety nine, Paul g Allen, the greatest owner we've
had in this city's history in terms of sports, owning
the football team, kind of saving the football team in
a lot of ways. And as I look through the Seahawk,
(41:49):
you know, franchise history starting with nineteen ninety nine, with you,
we will forget about the horrible year of nine. But
from you through Pete and now so far with and
Mike won ten games last year as well on the
way to that and then some this year. By and large,
as I look through here, way more playoff appearances and
(42:10):
about a seventy percent rate in terms of winning seasons
since nineteen ninety nine. That's with now three different coaches
for if you want to include more, but I don't,
so let's just say three different coaches along the way,
all have had pretty good success. Maybe it's expectations, but
how much of that has to also come from ownership.
Speaker 4 (42:30):
Mike, Oh, it means everything. It means everything. And Paul,
you know, bless his heart. He I've told you before
I go into meetings and you go, Okay, how much
money are gonna cost me? Now? You know, and things like.
Speaker 2 (42:44):
That, if you want He didn't care, did he like,
if you want?
Speaker 4 (42:46):
Know? That was that was That was his way of
kind of joking around with me. And we're leaving the
tension in the room. But you know, he he he
just would do anything. I would be I would. I've
been very fortunate because with the Packers Ron Wolf and
he once told me, hey, you know, you and I
are like owners. And he was my boss, he was
he was the general manager. We didn't have an owner.
(43:08):
And in Seattle, Paul, yeah, what do you need? How
can I help you? And then you see teams struggle
in the league when they don't have that, and it's
pretty obvious to me when those people, those decision makers
are not with you. And in this league you have to.
(43:31):
You know, the guys that own the football teams are
multi rich guys and they've been very good at something
to gain that kind of responsibility and money and all
that stuff, but they might not be so great at
the football game at that So they have to hire
people that they trust and will allow and give them,
(43:53):
but then give them the support that they need. And
you'll see teams now that don't have that. The owner
is too involved. He shouldn't be the guy making decisions
on players. He really shouldn't. He should trust the coach.
And that's what I always had in Seattle with.
Speaker 2 (44:07):
Paul fourteen to seventeen years as a head coach in
the NFL. Mike ho Longrin had a winning record fourteen
of seventeen, A winning record for you in your career,
which is just remarkable in a league that wants to
have parody, doesn't want to have teams be good every
year and all those things. I'm going to go back
to the culture part of it because I Mark James,
our Midday guy, I brought this up to me. He says,
(44:29):
I remember an interviewee and you did in during OTAs
non mandatory, and I had I had Jaron Reid and Mike,
and I asked Jaron kind of a I guess a
point blank question. Mark thought it was. Mark was kind
of goes, I can't believe you asked him that, but
he had a great answer and I said, I said,
I said, Jared, why are you here? Like, like, it's
not mandatory. You're eleven year veteran. Why are you here?
(44:50):
Why is Why is Leonard Williams here? Why is DeMarcus
and you know all these veterans, Cooper cut why are
you guys here? Like I'm just you know, guys don't
have to be here. He says, that's that's what we're
doing here. We're buying in. This is like it's a
kind of a buy in thing for Mike McDonald. You
can look around a room, right and find out pretty
soon who's who's going to be on your team and
who you want on your team and who's buying into
(45:12):
what what you as a coach you're selling? Correct?
Speaker 4 (45:14):
I think so? Yeah, I think so, And that that's
so important. And you know there are things that you
run into that are money things there, contract things, right,
but you kind of know I use Walter Jones as
an example, you know, And but I knew. I also
knew where his heart was and what it was. It
(45:36):
was a it was a business thing that that that's
the only reason he was then because he loved his teammates.
He loved being here, so I knew that. Then there
are other guys that you kind of know even though
now it's happening more where the player will say and
you'll read it in the newspaper, I don't want to
be here anymore. Trade me. Yes, that never happened. That
(45:56):
that never got out there. No, you know, even if
they felt that way. So it's a different time now.
But it's yeah, you see it right away. I think,
well some you should see it right away. Let me
put it that way.
Speaker 2 (46:08):
Yeah, I mean, you know, you know who the guys
are that are gonna that are gonna I mean, and
you need those guys. You need the Jaron Reids of
the world to buy in, right like. You need those
guys to say, Hey, this is how we do things here.
This is how we do things, you know. And I've
got you know, almost you almost see your veteran players,
don't you, Mike, to have the coaches back in a
sense in that room.
Speaker 4 (46:27):
Sure, And that's again you and I have talked about
this before as well. And you know, one of the
guys that I'm gonna mention my players committee that I selected.
You know, we're six or seven guys. And they might
not be the best player, right but I but they've
had an influence. Their teammates loved them, and they were sensible,
reasonable and most of our great players anyway, But you
(46:49):
think a guy like Robbie Tobek who've gone and you know,
we've talked about them before. He was on that committee.
He and I could talk about anything in that locker room,
and he could be honest with me if if I
had crossed the line or I'd done something silly, and
and you appreciate that. And so I had a good
understanding because of my committee about what was happening down
(47:13):
in the locker room. Because a lot of times, to
be honest, they don't always listen to everything the coach says,
but they do listen to their captains, and they do
listen to the players they respect.
Speaker 2 (47:23):
What was Reggie White?
Speaker 4 (47:25):
Oh he was, he was. He was a joy, you know,
and he was so good. He was such a good
player that you had to you had to respect him.
I mean you just had to. And then he was
he was a real Christian man and he you know,
I told you at the time that I got a
little mad and cursed at him a little bit and
he Mike, kind of like you doing that. You know,
(47:46):
you had a kind of rasped me voice. I said,
I'm sorry, but here's why I did it, and I'd
explained it to him, and but you know, he led
by example, but he also had control of the locker room.
Speaker 2 (47:56):
If Reggie's on your side, you were good as a coach,
like there was no there's no ifs or butts at
that point and stuff that's right now, And I think
that's what McDonald's got going on. I think that's why
you see what's happening right now right Mike is like
you see, the veterans have bought into whatever first year
coach last year, second year coach this year, kind of
like you was a highly sought after coordinator, but not
(48:17):
a head coach. So you've got to get that. And
Mike's done that, hasn't he I think he has.
Speaker 4 (48:23):
I think he has, and you know, I watch I
haven't talked to him lately. I haven't been in there
for in a while, but we do have good conversations
when I do go in there, and you know, he
how he responds to the presh and how he just
responds to the things I read and how he deals
with the players. You just I just know he is,
(48:44):
he's really they're listening and they got it going in.
You know, at the beginning year, I thought, you know,
Donald would be good. I thought there would be they
really have a chance to do something. In my opinion,
special this year.
Speaker 2 (48:56):
It's fun to watch on Mike Homegren with us. So
they make the trade yesterday Mike Rashid she head and
kind of brings us back to you know, this whole
you know, buying into things. There are some organizations in
all sports, not just the NFL, right, but in all sports,
some organizations kind of like, okay, we're hanging around, We're okay,
you know, we're not gonna and there's others that just
want to take a chance. I don't I don't know
(49:19):
if this is a you know, and it's different now
because Paul's gone and and Jody's there, and I think
for people don't know, Jody's still involved. Like I know
that she I know that she has conversations Jody does
with you know, with John and so forth, and certainly
with Chuck on the business side. But you know, it's
it's got to come somewhere where did Schneider seems to
be a guy. Maybe he got this from you and
(49:39):
Ron Wolf. I don't know. You tell me Schneider seems
to be a guy, John Schneider, that is. It's like, hey, man,
like I'm gonna I'm gonna roll the dice, I'm going
all in. I'm gonna do like the sheet Rashid she
Head trade yesterday, Leonard Williams a few years ago, Ernest
Jones last year. I mean, and there's some of them
haven't worked out. Jimmy Graham didn't work out. I think
Jamal was more pete than John, I'm guessing. But like,
(50:01):
like I'm I want to think that. I want to
want to believe that with my soul. But it feels
like Schneider's got a little, you know, swagger to him,
doesn't he Because he's not afraid to go out and
make a move.
Speaker 4 (50:12):
No, and he's that's exactly right. And he has now
been doing this a while and he knows he is
a You go in there and talk to him, and
he gets excited about talking about his players, and he
he knows how to do this. Now. He's got good
connections around the league, and he's willing to hang it
(50:33):
out there. Sometimes he really is and so but they're not.
It's not foolish, I don't think. It's always very thoughtful
and he allows It reminds me a little bit of
when I was with Ron Wolf. He was my boss.
He made the final call. But but we always we
talked about stuff. We agreed on things. We didn't argue
(50:53):
about it. We just came to an agreement. And I
think that's now with the relationship to John and my keV,
which which gives you a chance to be the best
team you can beat.
Speaker 2 (51:05):
So they go out and get Rashid Shihed. They've got
a guy leading the world in receiving yards and every
I mean everything imaginable in JSN. He's having this all
Pro season, and I don't think the Seal's had an
all Pro wide receiver since a guy named by the
name of Largent if I'm not mistaken. Good receivers. They've
had good receivers along the way. You know, you had
a couple of good ones with certainly with d Jack
(51:27):
and and you know and others, but but they haven't
had a pro an all pro wide receiver since then.
Cooper Cup banged up a little bit. Tory Horton coming on,
had a couple of touchdowns and you know we saw
we saw that the other day. So they go out
and get Rashid Shihed a speedster also returned, and I
think the returnability probably can't be overlooked Mike. I think
(51:48):
the fact that he can return kicks is probably a
big thing, especially with Dreike Young out. But they gave
away a couple of picks, you know, a fourth and
a fifth, and a lot of people are saying, ah,
I don't know what they're doing. He's got an expiring contract.
What'd you think of the trade? Was it necessary to
go out and get a weapon like him?
Speaker 4 (52:04):
I wasn't sure they're going to do anything, to be honest,
but I think it's a good trade. You know, their
receivers with Cuppy and hurt a little bit, and their
receivers a little bit dinged up just a little bit,
and so to add one more receiver who's a good
player to the mix and a good return guy, as
you pointed out, I think that's a plus. When you
talk about picks four and five down the road and
(52:27):
stuff that's so far away from now that I didn't think.
I don't think about that stuff too much when it
comes up, maybe you miss something, but you know, they
want to win right now, and if they think a
player in the case of this young man, can help
them be better and give them more depth along the
receiving group, then we're going to do it. And John
(52:51):
pulled the trigger and he's gonna do that. That didn't
surprise me. I didn't think they had a definite need there,
But now the more I thought about it, think it's
a very good pick.
Speaker 2 (53:01):
Well the I mean, and listen, you go back to
your conversations with ron uh and Schneider. I'm sure had
these with Pete and how's him with Micha although it's
a little different deal because he's definitely in charge now
more so than maybe before. Do you think that's a
collaborative effort, like, hey, I'm talking to I'm talking to Kubiak,
the OC, I'm talking to McDonald, the head coach. You know,
we're thinking about player X, Y and Z and maybe
(53:23):
player Y was was Rashid Shihed. I'm sure that's a
collaborative effort.
Speaker 4 (53:27):
Isn't it. It has to be. It has to be,
And that was one of the things, quite honestly, that
kind of fell apart my last my last couple of years. Yes,
coaching there, but it has to be in. That's what
makes teams and that's the way to do it, you know.
I remember. I'll tell you one quick funny story. When
John was in Green Bay with me. I was on
(53:49):
the field and the guy he had brought in, or
they had brought in Ron and Ted Thompson, those guys,
but Ted and Ron were on the road. John was
standing next to me and practice and the guy they
brought in came in and hit Farv in the back
and it was supposed to be no contact and he's
jumping around hitting Farv, and I went, I look, John's
(54:11):
trying to hide from me. He's trying to hide behind
the ball boy. And I look at him and go
did you bring him in here? And he goes uh,
And then I went ba zoo. I went crazy. Ask
him about that sometime, ask him about it. We laugh
about it now because I was a little out to
control them. Well, but he is what shut He's ma
(54:31):
shurt a lot. You know.
Speaker 2 (54:33):
The good news is Schneider probably could hide behind the
ball boy. He's not the tallest guy in the world.
She probably was hard. He probably was able to duck
back there and find him. No, I think that's a
good point though. I mean, listen, like, I know people,
you know, it's always laughing with the kind of fans
get upset about. Oh they gave up a lot of
draft you know, all the fourth and the fifth. I'm
thinking you have you watched John Schneider on a draft weekend?
(54:54):
Has he ever like outside of the COVID draft of
twenty twenty, twenty twenty one, right when they just didn't
they just kind of on that draft they did they
didn't see enough college tape. They freely admit it. We're
not going to put money into something we haven't seen
outside of that. That dude, Josh Snodder is not going
to go into Day three of the draft next year
with just two six round picks. He'll find a way,
not at all, He'll find a way.
Speaker 4 (55:14):
How many times? And you know, I don't stay at
the draft as long as you guys do. Yeah, but
I don't. Oftentimes I don't even get to stay as
long for one pick because he always trades back, you know,
he always trades back to get more picks if he
feels it's the right thing. To do. If the guy's there,
he'll take him. But they he likes to do that.
He likes that kind of action and he's been pretty
(55:36):
good at it.
Speaker 2 (55:37):
I just think it's great. I mean, honestly, if you're
a fan, you got to love the fact that this
team is all I mean, I did I go back
to since nineteen ninety nine, since you got here. This
is a team that has been uber aggressive like they
want to like it's it's like, hey, what can we
do to me?
Speaker 3 (55:50):
And it does.
Speaker 2 (55:51):
Jimmy Graham had a good season statistically, but we could
say it didn't work out. Percy returned a touchdown for
you know, in the Super Bowl to kind of put
it away. They would have won that game anyway. He
didn't do much after that. Jamal was an absolute disaster.
I mean, they've made mistakes along the way, there's no doubt.
But you're gonna make mistakes, and as long as you're
being aggressive, I think it's, you know, go for it.
People thought it was a mistake. There's a lot of
(56:12):
people that thought it was a mistake. When they got
rid of Gino and they went to Sam Darnald Mike
that's turned out okay. What'd you perfect half on the
first half on Sunday? What did you see from Sam Dnold?
Speaker 7 (56:23):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (56:24):
That was that was brilliant. I mean that was really something.
Now I have to say, and I said this before
this week that I'm not sure you know, Washington was
banged up and all that kind of stuff. But still
you watch Sam and how he delivers the ball on
time with accuracy, and they mentioned it on the air.
He sees his eyes and he's moving defenders around and
(56:46):
he's looking left, but he knows he wants to go
right and and it and he delivers the ball. He
passes the ball beautifully and he's a great leader. And
so that has worked out very very well. I haven't
watched gin in the Raiders very much, but listen, it's
it's working out. I hope it works out for Gino
because I liked Gino, but it's worked out for us
(57:07):
for sure.
Speaker 2 (57:08):
Guy has a half like that. Do you even talk
to him as head coach?
Speaker 4 (57:12):
Yep?
Speaker 2 (57:14):
D Like what do you tell like, cause you're gonna
you're the quarterback whisper you you know you you do
usually have a couple of things probably to say to
Bread or Matt or whoever, right, but the guy goes
guy goes perfect eighteen for eighteen or whatever it was,
and four touchdowns? Would do you just go, hey, just
keep it up? Like what do you say to the guy.
Speaker 4 (57:31):
I'd probably just say a nice going I'm gonna get
some water, right now.
Speaker 2 (57:35):
Go get an orange and take care of yourself. Yeah,
I mean that final thing for you, they get Shaheed.
But look, we've seen great receivers over the years in
the NFL that that, you know, like you keep you out,
like Heck, Seattle's gone against guys over the years. We
asked ourselves, you know, why was DK not this particular
guy in terms of you know, being flat out at
times like unstoppable, Like I'm surprised j end is just
(58:00):
like they everyone knows what he's gonna do, right, everyone
knows he's the guy. He's got forty seven percent of
the targets on the team so far. Like, are you
a little surprised that no one's been able to slow
him down? Or is he just that good? And if
you have a receiver at that level, it's just impossible
to do. Because even even in San Francisco, as great
as Jerry was, that John Taylor guy was pretty damn good.
Speaker 4 (58:19):
Yeah. No, and our tight end's caught to a lot
of passes too, so we you know. But you know what,
I've said it, and I'll say it again. It's amazing
what he's doing because I know if I was playing
against him, yes and coaching against him, I would I
would talk to my defensive coordinators said, I don't know,
you're running the show on defense. You do what you
(58:41):
need to do, but I'm going to have I'm going
to be watching one thing. I want him hit at
the line of scrimmage every play. I want him disrupted
after that. Do what I have to do. You know.
But he's not going to run free down there, because
when he runs free, they throw him the ball and
he beats you. So and so far, so far, no
(59:02):
one's been able to even stop and me even slow
him down. So that's a it's a great plan. It's
a great job they're doing, and I'll probably be surprised
all season long if they continues to happen.
Speaker 2 (59:15):
Justin Max, I got one more question. I got one
more story he's gotta tell because when you said that,
the first thing I thought before it, the first thing
I thought of Mike was two thousand and five and
the NFC title game, and Steven Steve Smith was like
the dude he was their offense for Carolina, right, he
was that, he was that guy. And you did what
you just said, didn't you put a lot of all things.
(59:38):
I remember watching this. I don't even know I'm important.
I'm like, is that that's a linebacker, not even like
their best linebacker Kevin Bentley? Why is? And you didn't
you put Bentley on Steven Smith and just say beat
him up? Like just go get them every play?
Speaker 4 (59:50):
Yeah, after on the line of scrimmage, and I remember,
I remember get you know them saying John would tell me,
he goes Mike that there were only playing with ten guys.
I said, that's right, that's right, do the best you
can with ten because I want that done every play
with that receiver. And then I left him alone and fortunately.
Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
It worked out and it stole like Steve Smith didn't
have a temper that probably just took him right out
of the game, like I mean, oh.
Speaker 4 (01:00:19):
No, you know what. And I saw him at different
things after the fact after we played that game, at
different things, and we joke about it and I laugh
about it and we had a pretty good relationship, but
I knew that to win that football game, we used
to have the best chance to win. We had to
do that. And give credit to our defense. They did
(01:00:40):
a great job.
Speaker 2 (01:00:40):
I did a great I was awesome. I remember watching
that thinking, this is like, this is one of the
coolest things I've ever seen, just something they would would
have thought about. And that's what it is like. And
JSNZ keeps going and doing his thing. Mike great Stuff
has always love these conversations. You'll be on with Softy tomorrow.
Good luck to you in that regard. Got speed, and
we'll talk to you next Wednesday, sir, thank.
Speaker 4 (01:00:59):
You, all right, but take it to get there, and.
Speaker 2 (01:01:02):
That's my call. I'm gonna we'll come back. It'll factor fiction.
May check a text or two coming up next. All right,
ladies and gentlemen, with a couple of texts here before
we get to the uh factor fiction. What let's see
(01:01:26):
what we got. Hope hope this spring training. Hope the
spring training. My trip lines up at the morning shows.
Morning show usually goes first week of spring training. Is
that right?
Speaker 5 (01:01:38):
They're usually February. Yes, it's like February.
Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
It's before right when right like on the eve of
the first Cactus Leek game.
Speaker 4 (01:01:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:01:48):
Yeah, they like getting there when everybody's there, they get
interviews there's no games going on.
Speaker 5 (01:01:52):
Well, now we know they start market plan.
Speaker 2 (01:01:54):
Yeah, Marcus plan accordingly. If they started on the February
twentye if I bet the Morning show'll be e theire
the week of the fifteenth or whatever it would be,
that'd be my guess. You can check out the Morning show.
They're on every day from six am to ten.
Speaker 5 (01:02:04):
Yes, they are.
Speaker 2 (01:02:05):
He just asked them and let them know Morning show
will be down there.
Speaker 5 (01:02:09):
I would love it if they've planned around that.
Speaker 2 (01:02:11):
I mean, Marcus has to plan around them, as what
he was trying to do.
Speaker 5 (01:02:15):
No, that's what I mean.
Speaker 2 (01:02:16):
Oh, I got you all right.
Speaker 5 (01:02:17):
I don't think. I don't think the Morning Show is
going to plan around yes, trip, Sorry.
Speaker 2 (01:02:22):
Let's see, did it?
Speaker 8 (01:02:23):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:02:23):
That's I'm not reading that. Not reading that. Do they
want they wanted to win right away? Okay? Why didn't
they address the guard position because Anthony Bradford is trash?
How do you know they didn't try.
Speaker 5 (01:02:37):
Spare fair question?
Speaker 2 (01:02:40):
I think if you know and think that Anthony Bradford
isn't quite good or if he's the weakest link or
is Humillans pointed out, he's probably out of twenty two starters,
number twenty two in terms of how good he is.
Speaker 5 (01:02:51):
It was his ranking.
Speaker 2 (01:02:52):
I'm gonna guess call me crazy. I'm gonna guess that
John Schneider, Mike McDonald's, John Betton, the O line coach,
could Beck. I'm guessing that they all know that that's
an issue. I'm guessing they may even looked at try
to upgrade. Now, sometimes when you make a trade, the
other team has to agree to it. That is I
(01:03:14):
think I could be wrong. Maybe maybe you could just
make a trade.
Speaker 5 (01:03:18):
Without an al Josh Snunder always say like there's not
some offensive lineman tree.
Speaker 2 (01:03:23):
Yeah, you'll just go to the store, just grab him. Yeah,
let's get this guy. It'd be great to get all.
Let's get the Factor fiction.
Speaker 3 (01:03:30):
We're set to go. Glad you're with us.
Speaker 1 (01:03:31):
It's your shot at our weekly thousand bucks and the
ten thousand dollars grand prize. It's Factor Fiction, probably presented
by Lucky Eagle Casino and hotel where every day Feels Lucky.
Factor Fiction is on Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ.
Speaker 9 (01:03:50):
R f M.
Speaker 2 (01:03:56):
Well, well, well, here we go down on the college
rabbit hole again. It's treated me so well this year,
has it not, Jess? Has it not treated me well?
Speaker 3 (01:04:06):
The answer is no, No, it has not.
Speaker 5 (01:04:08):
It looks like is this a trick question?
Speaker 1 (01:04:10):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:04:11):
So I was leading this way anyway. By the way,
you're playing Factor fiction bot to you by the Lucky
Eagle casino and hotel. Every day feels lucky. They're going
twenty four that's right, every Friday and Saturday. Twenty four
hour gaming starts November seventh. That'd be Friday at Lucky
Eagle dot com. So I was gonna go down this
road anyway, and I was just it was emphasized even
(01:04:32):
more Today. Two hours ago, I saw the following from
Dave Softy Mallar. Hard to believe how bad Wisconsin's offense
has been. Badgers have twelve total touchdowns this year as
a team. Let me read that again, twelve total touchdowns
as a team.
Speaker 3 (01:04:50):
I didn't fact check him.
Speaker 2 (01:04:51):
I just figured that the host of Husky Hanks, everything
else knows that's true. Jodah Coolma has fifteen by himself.
They have one touchdown in the last three games and
only two drives of fifty plus yards in the last
thirty just insane. That's from Dave Softey marro Now he
just to point out they've been playing some good defenses.
I don't care. I was going down this road anyway.
But assuming that his his facts are correct, and I
(01:05:16):
would have no reason to doubt Dave Softee Maler, my
pick is really simple. In Madison, Wisconsin, with an awful
Wisconsin team, Washington now ranked twenty three in the College
Football Playoff Poll. Their favorite are the Huskies by eleven
and a half. And you think that's a big spread,
Well not if the other team doesn't score. I think
Washington will score more than twice touchdown wise, don't you.
Speaker 3 (01:05:40):
I just like they're not playing Michigan.
Speaker 5 (01:05:42):
I just like what you're doing right now.
Speaker 2 (01:05:44):
Washington minus eleven and a half fact four nine four
or five to one.
Speaker 3 (01:05:48):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (01:05:49):
Washington minus eleven and a half fact four nine four
or five to one against the Badgers of Wisconsin. That's
your factor fiction pick. If you agree, you'll text fact
to four nine four or five one. If you disagree,
fiction four nine four five one. When you can get
your betting information, your factor fiction information from Dave Softy Maller.
(01:06:10):
That's what you do. You go with it and you
run with it all day long. Now some would say,
maybe go with the under based on his tweet. Nope,
I don't like that. I've never bet the end of
my life, never will. It's Unamerican.
Speaker 5 (01:06:23):
I don't like doing over unders. I like picking against
the spread.
Speaker 2 (01:06:27):
I think Washington's gonna roll all joking aside. I think
they're gonna roll them anyway. They'll beat them by more
than by twelve points or more, especially again if the
other team does not and cannot score, and they don't
and can't Washington minus eleven and a half fact four
nine four or five one text in right now, you
got about eleven minutes left to do so four nine
(01:06:49):
four or five to one factor fiction trying to win
a thousand dollars week with prize ten thousand dollars grand prize.
Huskies minus eleven and a half fact four nine, four.
Speaker 3 (01:06:56):
To five to one.
Speaker 5 (01:06:57):
That's right, take it from your chest.
Speaker 2 (01:07:06):
Or should we sing tequila instead? Doesn't matter? Huskies win easy.
That's your factor fiction. Bank that one. Take that to
the bank. That's your lock of the week. Right there,
better now, thank me later, as MJ would say, Softi's next.
(01:07:30):
The Seattle International Auto Show presented by B E. C
U is back November fourteenth through the sixteenth the newest

Drive them. Loom and Field Events Center, the Seattle International

dot Com. All right, Dave, Softie Maler is here, hang
(01:07:52):
by the way, Thank you very much.
Speaker 3 (01:07:53):
You really really nailed that one.
Speaker 2 (01:07:55):
There was only the only nailed, big boy, there's only
three misspellings in it.
Speaker 9 (01:07:59):
Oh yeah, well you're lucky. It's three, kid, it's actually
under the nole over under. Let me see that thing
right there, hand that over man. This is once resent
to Seattle Internutionial Ato Shaw presented by non ver four whatever, man,
I don't know, it's radio.
Speaker 3 (01:08:18):
Make it up.
Speaker 9 (01:08:19):
That was really well done. Do you like my factor fiction?
Pretty proud of you. I actually don't like your factor fiction.
Pick What was I doing? Why did you say you
knew what I was doing? Just as I was doing.
Speaker 5 (01:08:27):
You were doing exactly what Softie likes to do to us.
Speaker 3 (01:08:29):
Okay, but here's the thing.
Speaker 9 (01:08:30):
I actually thought the Cougars would win until you guys
just rocked yourself down there in corvallis what freaking embarrassment
that was?
Speaker 3 (01:08:38):
For God's sake. You don't think you.
Speaker 2 (01:08:39):
Guys are gonna win by by a couple of touchdowns
against Wisconsin.
Speaker 9 (01:08:42):
I'm concerned that Wisconsin's due for a win number one
or a cover number two.
Speaker 3 (01:08:49):
Their offense stinks right now.
Speaker 9 (01:08:51):
They've scored seven points in their last three games, yes,
against three of the top five defenses in the country.
So they got to think from their perspective. Man, first
of all, fickles up against it like this is dire strike.
Speaker 3 (01:09:02):
I don't always of that.
Speaker 9 (01:09:05):
Well, a lot of people that cover the sport don't
think Wisconsin has the money to buy an eye out.
Speaker 3 (01:09:09):
They don't have the big boosters.
Speaker 9 (01:09:11):
The way that Penn State and A and M and
Oklahoma State do places like that.
Speaker 7 (01:09:15):
Right.
Speaker 2 (01:09:16):
Well, but the other thing too, just on a side note,
for a lot of these teams that are like on
the verge of should we fire a guy or not? What,
the coaching pool is pretty damn limited.
Speaker 3 (01:09:23):
Well, that's the thing is.
Speaker 9 (01:09:24):
I was talking to Petros and we're gonna bring it
up today that there's a lot of schools I think
that have openings that feel like their openings should be
filled by a big time guy.
Speaker 3 (01:09:33):
And there's not a lot of big time guys. There's
just not fired.
Speaker 2 (01:09:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (01:09:37):
Sure, I mean there's gonna be a lot of you
know yourself, like Hugh Freeze, a lot of you know,
musical chairs going on. James Franklin's gonna find a job.
Hugh Freeze will find a job. Hell My Gundy may
find a job, for God's sakes. But I I look,
it's the it's the paranoia in me that you're going
on the road, you're playing a team that's desperate for
a win. They got to look at this game with
the Huskies is kind of a little bit of a
(01:09:59):
break and that are not facing a top five defense
for the first time in a month, So maybe we
can move the ball. Do I think the Huskies win? Yes,
I do what I probably lay off the number. Yes,
I would, Yes, I would. I could see him leading
by seventeen points and the Badgers got a back door cover.
Speaker 3 (01:10:14):
I could see a twenty seven to seventeen type win.
Speaker 9 (01:10:17):
Huskies are up twenty seven to ten, laid fourth quarter,
Notcorey get a back door cover. Well, that's my point
is that it could be come with come with thirty
seconds left to go?
Speaker 4 (01:10:25):
Why?
Speaker 2 (01:10:25):
Because you guys are the ball games are sixty minutes long. Pal,
you know what, you guys play them all you're on
the road. You only got sixty five guys. You can
bring age yes, player stars for a while and all
that funn Well.
Speaker 9 (01:10:33):
The other part is that now they're saying it may
snow on Saturday night in Madison.
Speaker 3 (01:10:37):
Yeah, may snow out. When do you fly?
Speaker 9 (01:10:38):
We'll see we fly back Sunday morning. And there's one
air traffic control guy at Madison, so good luck?
Speaker 2 (01:10:44):
Is he working or is he I do? I have
my point? There's only one guy left. That guy calls
it sick your shock.
Speaker 3 (01:10:50):
It's only one dude?
Speaker 2 (01:10:51):
Letter stuck?
Speaker 3 (01:10:52):
How many?
Speaker 9 (01:10:52):
How many dudes are in Seattle at SeaTac there might
be three or four guys?
Speaker 3 (01:10:55):
Now there might be won by Sunday night.
Speaker 5 (01:10:58):
I'm out of here to no ideas.
Speaker 2 (01:11:00):
Talking one guy in one tower at a small airport. Yeah yeah,
I'd say fifty fifty year back. Did you guys, let
me ask you a question.
Speaker 9 (01:11:06):
Did either one of you ever like wait tables in
high school or college or whatever?
Speaker 3 (01:11:10):
You did okay.
Speaker 2 (01:11:10):
So I was a bus boy.
Speaker 9 (01:11:11):
Do you ever have that night where nobody else showed
up and you had like an entire section to yourself.
Speaker 3 (01:11:16):
That's what the.
Speaker 9 (01:11:16):
Traffic controllers are like right now. If you're just running around,
they're dropping beers all over the plane.
Speaker 2 (01:11:21):
And the difference is one guy's controlling airplanes. That's right,
that's right, otherwise you're beer. It's pretty important, man.
Speaker 9 (01:11:27):
So we'll see. I would agree, we'll see what happens
this weekend. But we're fired up to get out there.
It's say interesting that you know Harlan's going to be
here this weekend for the Seahawk game. I saw that
he's calling the game, and I'm not going to be
your second straight time he's going to be here this year.
Speaker 3 (01:11:39):
And I am out of town.
Speaker 2 (01:11:40):
Time to get back.
Speaker 9 (01:11:41):
I get back Sunday at like four o'clock, so I'm
gonna I'm going to miss their game.
Speaker 2 (01:11:45):
What do you do in that case? And like, is
do you record?
Speaker 3 (01:11:49):
Know if it's on Delta?
Speaker 9 (01:11:49):
I watch the game on the plane because they got
they got phenomenal Wi Fi.
Speaker 3 (01:11:53):
Actually they have the little TV and they have the TV.
Speaker 2 (01:11:55):
So yeah, that's good.
Speaker 3 (01:11:56):
Yeah, I'll watch the game on the plane.
Speaker 2 (01:11:58):
Are you are you if you ant? Are you a
guy that would record and stay off?
Speaker 3 (01:12:02):
So no, No, I don't care that much.
Speaker 2 (01:12:05):
I made I made the mistake of doing that for
the Cougs last Saturday. Ye a hockey game, and I
knew what the score was at halftime. Yeah, Mike, I'll
come home and watch it. Kind of shuttle through, and
I shuttled. It's gonna get better. It's going to get better.
It's gonna get better. Never got better better. Yeah, I
almost Tex suggests to go, what the hell I mean?
Speaker 9 (01:12:23):
You gotta feel a little, a little good for the
Beaves rushing the field, old.
Speaker 2 (01:12:28):
D c Robins.
Speaker 9 (01:12:33):
We'll get him on the second half of the back
to back, the home and home. Whatever it is, I'm
gonna make you guys big time. I would do big time, Okay,
especially if Zev doesn't play. Yeah, well it's your guys,
ZV out of there. I'm gonna jump all over that line.
Whatever the hell it's going to be. Is that the
final game of the regular season? No, No, that would
be good if it was. Who do you play in
your final games? What's the last jess, what's the last
regular season game. It's not Oregon State, it's some other slappy.
Speaker 5 (01:12:54):
No, it's our last one is Oregon State. We've got
Louisiana Tech come up at all the game.
Speaker 9 (01:13:03):
You do not know that, man, you are well I
gave up last week, buddy.
Speaker 2 (01:13:08):
