Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now from the Star Rentals Sports Tests Jordan ninety three
point three kg RFM Sports headlines.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Good afternoon, Happy Wednesday Live Greig Bell with the News
Tribune at the Virginia Mason Athletics and Inferness is away
again today. He'll be back tomorrow, so don't worry and
you don't have to suffer too many much more.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Oh, we're all having fun.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Thanks. I spent more time with you than my wife
here the last four or five days. The headlines about
to you by Frost Brewed cors Light Choose Chill to
Crack in Man. They played really well last night, took
a couple of leads, but then couldn't have overcome the
hl's best team in the third period. Last night they
lost five to three after an empty net goal at
the end. Five to three at home. That's nine losses
(00:39):
in ten games. Chandler Stevens and Jordan Everley Shane Wright
combined to score the goals for the Crack At Philip Grubauer,
he looks like he gave up four goals in thirty
seven attempt because he did, but he was on his
head for much of that game. I mean, Camarados could
have scored.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Ten thirty seven shots on goal.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
That's a lot, and they could have scored four or
five more times than they did. He made some brilliant
say especially in the second period to keep him up
in front. They were up three two going in the
third and they lost five to three. They're back on
the ice, home ice tomorrow against the Calgary Flames. Five
thirty pre game showed him right with the one of
the league captain Mike Benton, six o'clock puck drop right
here on their home for the crack at ninety three
(01:16):
point three KGFM Calgary Seattle tomorrow at CPA. And yet
Commissioner Adam Silver, Yeah, I know you've heard this before,
but he said yesterday at the NBA Cup in Las
Vegas that a decision regarding domestic expansion. He specified that
meaning not Oklahoo, mut Vancouver, not Mexico City, right, but
domestic expansion will be coming within the year, meaning in
(01:37):
twenty twenty six. Now that's a long year between January
and this time next year. But the timeline of course
been elusive to Seattle and Las Vegas, whom the Commissioner
Adam Silver did point out by name yesterday, those two cities.
But it sounds like in twenty twenty six we're gonna
learn if the league will expand from thirty to thirty
two teams. And he's already earmarked Seattle in Las Vegas
as the ones they look at closely. Yeah, I know,
(01:58):
wake me up when it's over right here. Kirby Moore
was introduced yesterday as Washington State men's football coach. I
guess there's not a women's team yet over there. Talks
of loyalty.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
It was noted by Greg Woods, who had a pretty
interesting article out today regarding that.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Yes, the loyalty, of course is a big issue with
coaches coming and going a year after year. Jimmy Rodgers
just leaving after one year to go to Iowa State.
And that's why Kirby moories here. The Prosser native played
at Boise State, but he said he as a kid
went to games at WSU and Martin Stadium. He emphasized
he'll bring quote exciting brand of football on the pulous
you believe it, Jess, I do.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
I definitely think that he has the chops and everything.
I think the big question after WSU has been scored
so many times by coaches that I mean the only
one to get fired in the time that I have
been there is Nick Rolovich. So I mean we're talking
a lot of I think that he's going to have
to prove it by staying not the brand of football
he brings, but I do believe he has the chops
(02:59):
to do so.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
And Rolovich was a stated, we just take a COVID test.
Ohire University had football coach Brian Smith has been relieved
to his duties. Not great timing was the signing dages
tended for Ohio. Termination follows an administrative view of allegations
in Athenes, Ohio. The Smith violated the terms of his
employment a grant by engaging in serious professional misconduct and
participating in activities that reflect unfavorably in the university. Man,
(03:23):
that sounds like a lawyer just pulled that right from
his contract.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Gay sounds about It.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Means as in firing for cause you have to pay him.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
I mean that's what happens, right like you look for
four cause. And I mean those are serious allegations too.
I mean, I don't think they were digging for that,
and I don't think that is the same you could
say about Sharon Moore.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Clearly there was some trouble happening with him.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
So once again leaders of men who can't even leave
their own selves pukakua strong words regarding NFO referees. The
Rams wide receiver stated on a live stream a live
stream after the game in the locker roo, if I'm
not mistaken, the Rams teammates can appreciate that, yes, he said,
quote the rafts are the worst. Some of the rules
are The guys want to be the guys would be lawyers.
(04:10):
They want to be on TV too. You don't think
he's texting his friends in the group chat like, yo,
you guys saw me on Sunday Night football. That wasn't
PI but I called it. Yeah, his teammates are, Rick,
what are you doing, dude? Come out of face. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
It just it reminds me of some people who have
done those, you know, Instagram lives and stuff from the
locker room, caught stuff that they shouldn't And yeah, but
he had a purpose, he had an attention for sure.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Twenty somethings will be twenty somethings in their social media.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
I got well, there's that.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Now for today's show. The Seahawks actually are on the
practice field right now. They just started there outside today
now that the rain has stopped. In Seattle game tomorrow night,
five point fifteen. This is the first time Jesssemine that
two and a first time in NFL history they've had
a Thursday night game with two teams of eleven or
more wins.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Yeah, huh.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Usually Thursday nights.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
Well, there's they're pre scheduled so far ahead of time.
It's you know, with predictions of who's going to be
the best matchup.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
But this one they nailed.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
They did also this week, of course, the college football
player We've went talk with Stuart Mandel at one twenty.
He's going to talk about the Michigan situation. Jesseman just
alluded to Sharon Moore. We'll get the latest on what
he knows from Michigan, he's talked to folks there, and
what he thinks of how far this might search process
might draw out. Of course, there's some interest to the
(05:31):
University of Washington's coach Jed Fish could be a candidateman
that the longer this goes, the more candidate he may be.
With that job opening up last week, with all the
Sharon More arrests and jailing and craziness going on in
an arbor. We'll talk to Stuart Mindel of the Athletic
at one far hundred Logy great friend of mine. He's
a Vancouver based TSN Canada reporter. He covers the NFL
(05:53):
and major college football primarily for them. He also covers
the CFL. But he's going to be traveling man this week.
He's going to be with me tomorrow for the Rams
and Seahawks at the press box Atluomenfield, and then he's
going on a red eye Jessamond through Chicago. We can
get into Norman, Oklahoma Friday night. They're gonna he's gonna
cover Alabama at Oklahoma in the first game of the
(06:13):
College Football Playoff. He'll join us at one forty five
at two o'clock to coach Mike Congran. It's always great
to talk to him. I covered him here in the
early two thousands. He remembers that he kind of lefts
that covered his first in Seahawks, first Super Bowl team
with Seattle at two thousand and five. I'll talk to
the coach Mike Homran right after two o'clock two thirty.
(06:33):
What were you your text back on the text line
still unsponsored text line kind of amazing that it's still
unsponsored what it is.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
It's so popular too.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
We mentioned it one hundred times a day on the station,
exactly at least one hundred and nobody's has sponsored it yet.
We'll read back your text at two thirty and then
two forty five, Dave Softy Maller and Dick Fane will
take over and we'll trust talk with Dave Softy Maller.
He's man. He probably hard to contained himself right now
about tomorrow night.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
I mean, when can he exactly no normal conditions.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
Yeah, exactly, no, Yeah, he's NonStop. He's been in the
office all day. We had some meetings here and so
all of our staff was in and here.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
Yeah, I just wrote for the newstributing dot com this morning.
What's at stake exactly for the Seahawks tomorrow night. If
they win, they have the inside track to the number
one seed in the NFC, not just winning the NFC
West for the first time since twenty twenty, but being
the top seed in the conference. And that couldn't with
it not only home for the advantage, but you're the
only team in the conference that doesn't play in wild
(07:36):
card weekend. That's one fewer chance of getting beat. One
more week to rest and get healthier before the playoffs start.
That's a big deal the NFL when they changed the
playoff format to make seven teams in each conference go
in a few years ago, they gave only one team
a bye. Used to be multiple teams, now it's one.
So the NFC's top seed is a big carrot out
(07:56):
there that in tomorrow Night's game, the loser of tomorrow
night game is headed for the five seed. It would
take a collapse as in two losses in the last
well probably no two losses in the case of the Rams.
If the Seahawks lose, the Rams would have to lose
to Arizona and Atlanta to end the season for the
Seahawks have any chance to win a division, and that
ain't happening. The Rams could roll out their Sea team
(08:19):
and beat the Falcons and the Cardinals. So the loser
of tomorrow Night's destined for the five seed. What's that mean? Well,
the first round on the road. But he looks like
the NFC South champion, which is to be determined between
Carolina and Tampa Bay. Carolina and Tampa Bay are both
seven and seven.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
I was gonna say, that's not exactly a huge worry
at this point, except that.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
The Buccaneers came in here and just ripped the Seahawks
Mike McDonald defense for thirty eight points. With Baker Mayfield
a couple months good point seven and seven Carolina seven
and seven Tampa Bay. They play each other twice in
the last three weeks and determine who wins the NFC
North who the Seahawks will play with Carolina in between
those two Buccaneers and Panthers games, And then if you
win that game, you go probably to the NFC North champion,
(09:02):
either Chicago in Green Bay. And I can tell you
from experience just getting there myself that's no picnic. And
the Seahawks have had zero success on the playoffs on
the road in either one of those cities. I've covered
multiple Seahawks playoff losses in Chicago and in Green Bay.
And if they somehow get through that, which history says
they've never done before, they would play the NFC title game,
most likely on the road, unless somehow the six or
(09:24):
seventh seed has gotten through the bracket as well. In
Seahawks could somehow host that NFC title game, but My
point is that's no way to get to the super Bowl.
Just man. No, Yeah, as good as they've been.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
On the road, we'd prefer the easy route, you know, absolutely.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
I mean it's it's night and day tomorrow it's one
or five. Yeah for tomorrow. Yeah, that's what makes this
so big. And you heard it yesterday when Julian Love
talked on the show about that. He says, yeah, you'll
hear people saying about, well, it's December football and all
games are big. He said, Nah, none of that, he says,
I'm in my mindset is I'm embracing the enormous this game.
It is huge, and we know that the one seed
(10:04):
is at stake and what comes with that, and how
we'd love to play two playoff games at home before
going to the super Bowl. It bears repeating. I say
it a lot, I've written a lot. The only three
times the Seahawks have been to the Super Bowl in
their fifty years of history is when they had the
top seed in the NFC two thousand and five, and
the back to back thirteen and fourteen teams all had
(10:25):
the number one seed. All the NFC had to come
out here sideways, rain and the noise and all of that. Now,
I know the home field advantage hasn't been what it
has been in the last few years, but all of
a sudden, the Seahawks are six and two at home
this year, and as great as Mike McDonald, his team
has been on the road the last two seasons thirteen
and two. Only George Seaford in NFL history has debuted
(10:46):
as a coach with more road wins in its first
two seasons coaching. They don't want to do that three
road trip back to back to back. Not to mention
Jesse in their history. Not all teams do this. Their
history is they fly back home after each one of
those games, right San Francisco. In the past when they've
had back to back road playoff games has stayed back east.
(11:08):
The Seahawks have always come back. And you don't think
that's much, but I can tell you the players talk
a lot about it's not so much getting to the
game because they go two days early. It's the getting
back the East Coast to West coast, the drag that
puts on your body and your sleep habits, and then
you got to turn around and play again in four
or five or six days. That's the concern of doing
(11:29):
that three times in a row.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
Yes, it's tough.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
As someone who has traveled to the East Coast several
several times in the past six months, I can tell
you it does wear on you. You kind of need
like you have like the travel hangover. And I know
these guys are well taken care of. They're on a
private jet, they're on a charter, I should say, and
you know, but it doesn't change the fact that it
(11:53):
is exhausting to do that travel.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Not to mention they're doing it when they should be
in a training room or or ivy bags hooked up
to them right. Sometimes are on the plane because they're
trying to recover from playing eighty car wrecks in the
game that afternoon. You don't think it's uncomfortable to write,
I don't care if you're in first class seating or not,
which the Seahawks plane now is mostly first class seating
their new plane. But it ain't comfortable to fly six
(12:17):
hours after playing a three and a half hour NFL
football game. No, you're sore, stuck, you're injured, you're cramping.
And to do that three times in a row and
get to the super Bowl that way it'd be a
tough ask. It really would be a tough Now, one
of those games could be the NFC title game, could
be on the West Coast, because the winner of the
NFC West looks like it's going to be the number
(12:38):
one seed, be that San Francisco, Los Angeles or Seattles.
But still, yeah, that's not the preferred path. That's what's
at stake tomorrow night. And yeah, I did that Atlanta
to Seattle, to Baltimore to Seattle twice in four days,
and it was it took a minute. Yeah, I'm still
trying to get over that.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
I hear you, Oh, miss jmu things.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
Yes, right, So that's what the Seahawks and Julian Love
said yesterday. He is fully on board with the injury
issues real quickly before we go to break and get
Stuart Mendevi in here. Charles Cross, I don't know if
he's gonna play. He's got a hamstring issue, and this
is the wrong week to come back from a hamstring
right three days rest. Same with Davante Adams, the leading
(13:22):
touchdown wide receiver in the NFL with fourteen right now,
he pulled up lame with a hamstring, grabbed his hamstring
in the Lions game the Rams won last weekend. Both
those players, they're probably gonna be game time decisions. I
would expect them to be listed as questionable with best
when the injury report comes out this afternoon. I'll go
out and practice here and during the break to see
what Charles Cross is doing. But I have a feeling
(13:43):
he's not gonna be on the field and Jessen. That
means that Jones, the guy they brought in, is the
most likely starting left tackle. That's why they signed him
from Baltimore and Houston. The Veterans swing man. He's played
a little bit at right guard last week, Josh Jones
did for a Lucas when he missed a couple snaps
getting injury checked. Lucas is fine, he will start, but
(14:03):
it looks like Josh Jones maybe starting at left tackle.
I'm next from the Virginia Mason Athletics Center and Seahawks Headquarters,
will be joined by Stuart Mandel all things college football
for the Athletic. He's going to be joining us to
talk about the Michigan mess, how it might affect Jedfish
in Washington. We'll talk a little bit about Army Navy
we'll talk about the college football playoff up next with
Stewart ma Manzel Mandel. Excuse me, Johnny Manziel's not a
(14:28):
far Hunt Walls. You have TSN at one forty five,
Coach Mike Comeran at two o'clock, and your text at
two thirty. All that coming up from Seahawks headquarters on
ninety three point three KJRFM.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
It's time to go inside college football with ians weekly
visit with the Athletics Stewart Mandel brought to you by
Ben Holiday Bourbon. This football season, team up with a
glass of Ben Holiday Bourbon. This real Missouri bourbon, bottled
in bog represents the perfect union of distilling tradition and
modern day production. On the rocks are in a cocktail.
(15:14):
Pick up a bundle today must be twenty one. Please
enjoy responsibly now Stuart Mandell on your home for college
Football Saturdays, Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Stuart, thanks a lot for joining us again. It's happy
holidays to you. What's happened since Seattle and Ian last
talked to you, and most of that a lot has
been in ann Arbor, Michigan. As what you know, Stuart,
what's going on with Michigan. Are they going to wait
to do their second investigation of the Sharon Moore situation
(15:49):
in the athletic department as a whole before they hired
a new football coach. What do you think is going
to happen here in the next few weeks.
Speaker 6 (15:56):
For what I understand, they're kind of happening in parallel.
They're doing the investigation into the broader athletic perman culture,
as they said, And what that kind of makes what
makes for an awkward situation is I think we all
feel like, Yeah, the athletic director Ward Manuel is not
going to survive that because there's just been it's just
(16:18):
been one thing after another under his watch and a
lot of questions about how to sharn more situation was handled.
So from what I've been told, he is still running
the coaching search now they have a search firm. I'm
sure the board and others might be involved as well,
but he is the one leading it. So as they
(16:38):
talk to potential coaches, you know, I'm sure the potential
coaches are going to be wondering, are you still going
to be around to be my boss?
Speaker 2 (16:46):
And then they have an interim president at the University
of Michigan as well. I'm assuming that's still a searching
to a full time How does that factor in all
of this with a potentially lame duck or in trouble
athletic director without a full time president.
Speaker 6 (17:01):
We kind of saw this situation with LSU. They had
an interim president, they had a you know, a governor
who was kind of running the coaching search. I thought
that would dissuade candidates, but link Kiffen was the who
is probably the most thought after coach in this cycle,
ended up going there. So Michigan is going to have
a lot of appeal regardless it's Michigan.
Speaker 7 (17:22):
They won a national championship.
Speaker 6 (17:23):
Just two years ago, one hundred and ten thousand DC
and all the stuff you associate with them. But I'm
sure there are candidates who will be scared off by
the you know, all the chaos that's going on there
right now.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
Stir Meandel, the athletic co host of the Audible podcast
with Bruce Felm, and joining us as he does every
week at this time on ninety three point three kJ
R f M. Do you believe Kaylin de Bor at
his word that he's not talking to anybody not interested
to talk to anybody, or do you think that could
potentially change after Friday night if they go to Norman
and lose in the first round of the playoff.
Speaker 6 (17:58):
Yeah, I believe that doesn't mean if they do lose,
is that you know there's nothing stopping for Michigan from
checking in seeing if anything's changed.
Speaker 7 (18:08):
I don't think you know.
Speaker 6 (18:11):
Obviously, Alabama fans will be disappointed about this season if
they lose this game, and he already had the unenviable
task of being measured against Nick Saban. But it's not
like Greg Burnie eighty is going to turn around and
fire him if they lose this game.
Speaker 7 (18:25):
The idea that he would.
Speaker 6 (18:26):
Go to Michigan is or why he would leave Alabama
for Michigan. It is basically just, hey, things, things are
trending in the wrong diression.
Speaker 7 (18:33):
Do you want to get out before before this might
become an issue next year.
Speaker 6 (18:39):
A lot of coaches have a lot of confidence in themselves.
He's got a lot of reason to have confidence in himself.
So if he feels good about the situation he's got there,
he should have Tyd Simpsons back next year.
Speaker 7 (18:50):
I don't think he's going to turn pro. You never know. Yeah,
maybe he's in it for the long home.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
And speaking of quarterbacks, as you understand, it would Bryce
Underwood stay no matter what the coaches or you're hearing
anything about the five star blue chip quarterback Michigan signed
this past year.
Speaker 7 (19:06):
Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 6 (19:07):
I don't think anybody knows there was a It did
come out that his so a lot of the players
now that do these revenue share contracts. The contracts have
buyouts in them, just like with a coach, but his
apparently does not. So there's really nothing stopping him from
going in the portal. And I'm sure he's probably waiting
(19:27):
to see what happens with this coaching serch who do
they hire.
Speaker 7 (19:33):
But I don't know.
Speaker 6 (19:36):
We've seen some pretty you know, he was five Stark
or he's the number one guy. Uh so was Dylan
Royola the year before. He's in the portal now dj
Lagway he's in.
Speaker 7 (19:46):
The portal now.
Speaker 6 (19:48):
It's just kind of comes with the territory now that
these guys don't necessarily stay in one place.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
I would think Michigan with the boosters, with the revenue source,
with the top of the Big ten food chain as
money's not going to be an issue here. They could
probably I'll pay NFL head coaches if that's the case.
Do you see them going into the pro ranks. Do
you see any candidates potentially being NFL guys?
Speaker 6 (20:13):
They could, Now, the only problem with hiring NFL guys
right at this point is to wait, if you have
to wait out their season. Yeah, the portal officially open
standing right second. Really it's already open. It's already you know,
guys are already announcing their intent.
Speaker 7 (20:27):
To enter the portal.
Speaker 6 (20:29):
But if that's kind of an unofficial deadline, you know,
you might not you might not be able to afford
to wait. There have been Tavita Pritchard as a new
Stanford coach. He was the QV coach for the Commanders,
and the Comanders just like let them leave, right, But
he's the QV coach, He's not the head coach or
a coordinator.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
Stirmandel the Athletic Coast of the Audible podcast joining us
on ninety three point three KJF, and we're spending a
lot of time talking about this Michigan situation out here
in Seattle, obviously because Jed Fish suddenly could be a candidate.
Are hearing anything in that.
Speaker 7 (21:01):
Regard, I think he's going to be candid.
Speaker 6 (21:03):
I just first of all, I think the Michigan search
is going to run pretty slowly.
Speaker 7 (21:07):
I don't think they're going to hire somebody eminently, so.
Speaker 6 (21:12):
We want to might not even be at the point
yet of hey, we want to go interview Jed Fish,
but I definitely think he will be in the mix.
The question there for me is I think he's a
good coach, but has he proven enough to be like, Yeah,
this is because like you said, like they're probably going
to pay the next coach a lot of money. It's
a big it's a big move. I think if you
(21:35):
do get him, you got a better chance of keeping
Underwood and some of those young players because he's known
as a good offensive coach. I think it's going to
just come down to what exactly they're looking for. If
it's important to have an established sitting head coach, a
lot of them are not available.
Speaker 7 (21:52):
Jetfish probably is Stirmandel the athletic.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
In the audible podcast Jurning You Sarre in ninety three
point three KJFM, I saw publicly that you've voted for
Diego Pavia for the Heisman Trophy. Did you explain your vote,
and were you surprised he didn't win or did you
what did you think of his since regrettable and he
apologized for rant against the voters who didn't vote for him.
Speaker 7 (22:14):
I wasn't surprised Mendoza one.
Speaker 6 (22:15):
I was just a little surprised at the margin because
I thought it was going to be more competitive between
the two and they're both great, and it was a
tough decision.
Speaker 7 (22:24):
I just looked at it as two things.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
You know, Pavia, Vanderbilt football was so bad before he
got there for so long, and he's just completely transformed
that program, you know, to the point where they could
win ten games and seas in a regular season for.
Speaker 7 (22:40):
The first time ever.
Speaker 6 (22:41):
And also he's a duel threat guy, right, so he
had a really good passing season, but he also ran
for almost nine hundred yards.
Speaker 7 (22:47):
You know, if you're I could, I could absolutely see
the other side of it too.
Speaker 6 (22:50):
Where with Mendoza, hey, maybe the stats are play is great,
but he'd beat number one Ohio State, he'd beat top
five Oregon. Vanderbilt schedule was a little soft, they didn't
have wins.
Speaker 8 (22:59):
Like I wasn't.
Speaker 6 (23:02):
Necessarily all that offended by Pavia's comments.
Speaker 7 (23:04):
Afterward. I think that's his personality. He's brash, he's cocky.
Speaker 6 (23:10):
You know, he called out Tennessee over the offseason and
then went and beat them, So you're right, Like, it's
a quite the contrast with Mendoza, who I think is
wins the award for nerdiest tis and Winterever, who, as
was pointed out on Twitter today, updated his LinkedIn with
the fact that he won the Heisman. H you know,
(23:31):
so good for him, right, Like, let's celebrate that. But
I'm not looking to necessarily totally dunk on Pabia.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
Stirred a game that's near and dear to Jesmine in
my heart mind, especially in my West Point graduate Army
Navy Jesseman and I were at the Army Navy game
in Baltimore this past weekend, as we have been the
last four years, and there was a lot of talk
while we were in Baltimore that this might be one
of the, if not the last, standalone Army Navy game
because of the inevitable ex college football players. I hear you,
(24:00):
thank you, sir, that's my first question. I make the
statement that it's probably the last true college football game
if you count discount the Zuomies of Air Force. They
also don't get an IL. But there's no nil money
on that field among one hundred and five players on
each team. Why not if there's just sport, why not
trumpet it? Why not? If you do expand the playoff,
(24:23):
move those games around the army, if keep your army
of game at three Eastern on the second Saturday in September,
why would you not want to showcase that.
Speaker 6 (24:32):
I think everything about that event is perfect. Don't mess
with it in any way. Now, it's not always perking.
Speaker 7 (24:41):
If I'm wrong, Jessman would definitely know this.
Speaker 6 (24:42):
It hasn't always been on the second Saturday in December, right,
that's recent there necessarily led to that, but you would
want it to be standalone. And I just think right now,
like there, we still don't know is this going to
become a sixteen team playoff?
Speaker 8 (24:58):
Is it not?
Speaker 4 (24:59):
Is it?
Speaker 2 (25:00):
You know?
Speaker 6 (25:00):
The Big Tens pushing for twenty four right now? The
betting favorite is it stays at twelve next year. Doesn't
mean it'll stay that way for long. And so first
they have to figure that out, right, the bigger picture
of what is the playoffs going to be? And then
they figure out the calendar, and they already have trouble
fitting these first round games in.
Speaker 7 (25:18):
You know, the NFL goes head to head with two
of them.
Speaker 6 (25:20):
Now you're telling me if it's a sixteen tame class,
there's going to be uh, you know, the extra you know,
two more extra games on top of that. So I
would hope though everybody would honor Army Navy. One thing
and has going for it, obviously, is the NFL. It's
before the NFL starts playing you know, full on Saturday schedules.
So whether that means it, uh, there are there are
(25:45):
playoff games that day, but none of them are opposite that.
Speaker 7 (25:48):
Like, at the very least they can do that.
Speaker 6 (25:49):
I don't it would be totally unnecessary to schedule a
playoff game opposite that game.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
Thanks well, said sir audible podcast joining us, and it'll
be came plumbing hot on a ninety three point three KJRFM.
Where do you see? First of all, let's just start
with you said the calendar. I'm sure Ian has brought
this up with you, but can we at least agree
and can college football president college university presidents agree to
(26:18):
just move the transfer portal out of the season and
get it into at least after the college Football Playoff
is done. Will that at least happen?
Speaker 6 (26:26):
Well, they kind of did, right, they moved it to
this year. It's going to be not going to open
un till January. Second, The problem is it doesn't It
almost doesn't matter. Like it's all going on already. You've
seen so so many big name.
Speaker 7 (26:38):
Quarterbacks enter the portal.
Speaker 6 (26:39):
Are announced they're going to enter the portal, right, but
that basically means they're in the portal.
Speaker 7 (26:44):
Agents are shopping guys as we speak.
Speaker 6 (26:46):
Schools are making deals with them, Like you could move
the thing to June and that would still be going on.
So it kind of effectively didn't really change much. Frankly,
I think it's worse because what you what you can't
do in December is take visits to these schools. You
can't do that till you're officially in the portal. So
I think that means there's only guy a lot more
guys that pick their schools without having ever step foot.
Speaker 7 (27:09):
On the campus. The problem, the challenge with all.
Speaker 6 (27:12):
This stuff is it's still it's still college football. It's
still tied to the academic calendar. Right now, this January
second to fifteen of pushing it as close as possible
to the start of the second semester. So if you
moved to even you moved it even a few weeks later,
if you moved it to February, like, at that point,
it's too late for them to enroll at their new
(27:34):
school for the second semester. So I know everybody complains
about the calendar. I complain about the calendar too. It's
just very the options are very limited.
Speaker 2 (27:43):
Well, let me posit something to you, Stewart. I used
to work at the University of Washington's athletic department in
a former life, and I've had people there. I've had current,
current and former athletic directors that big time programs tell
me they think the future of college football in particular
is that they are going to move those entities off
of campus and they will lease the colors, the uniforms,
(28:07):
the names, the branding, and the stadiums as private companies.
And the students basically are not students. They're paid players
with labor contracts as off campus third party entities, so
that they can be outside of Title nine restrictions. They
could be outside of student athlete restrictions and great eligibility.
Is that too far fetched that that could be the
(28:29):
future for at least the haves anyway, the big ten
in the secs of the world.
Speaker 6 (28:35):
You know, it's certainly been thrown about, and in fact,
I've seen you know, people in college sports, you know,
not many, but advocate for something like that. The thing is,
I know it's easy to stereotype everybody as dumb jocks.
The majority of these guys want to be in college,
want to get their degree, like, they are not just
(28:55):
going there for football. So to say like we're just
going to take that away from you, I don't think
is the best idea. I also wonder if, like I
covered the Ed O'Bannon anti trust here at Kyle a
decade ago, where the NCAA was trying to argue with
the straight face that the players got paid, everybody would
stop watching and clearly that's not the case. But there
(29:17):
might be a point of no return of Okay, they're
not even college students anymore. I don't like that. That
makes me uncomfortable, right, So there are many steps along
the way before it could get to something that extreme.
I do think they need collective bargaining, whether that means
their employees or not. There has to be. There has
(29:39):
to be at some point in acknowledgment that.
Speaker 7 (29:42):
Whose day, Alabama, Georgia are.
Speaker 6 (29:43):
Playing a completely different sport than the Sun Belt. It's
it's really you know, noble and tradition that they all
be in the same governance division. It's just not realistic.
But the scenario you described, I hope I hope not.
I hope we don't get to that.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
I hope you're right too. I've had people tell me
that maybe let's hold the education experience in a dance
and if they don't make the NFL, you go have
a scholarship paid for. If you do make the NFL,
you pay back into the fund so the next guy
can get an education. Right, it's broken. I think we
all agree on that.
Speaker 6 (30:18):
It's the most popular broken product. Everybody says like it's broken,
it's dying, and then like, I get the press release,
the eighteen million people watch the Big Ten championship game.
Speaker 7 (30:27):
You know it's thriving in spite of itself.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
That's a good way to put it. Stirman out of
the Athletic the co hosts the Addible podcast. He joins
us every week at this time on the beacon plumbing
high and Stuart. Happy holidays to you. Thanks for taking
the time. We'll see what the color. Oh, I should,
I should? I should get you real quick on what
do you think happens this weekend in the playoffs?
Speaker 8 (30:49):
Is?
Speaker 2 (30:50):
Does do the underdogs have a chance? Does Bama went
on the road at Oklahoma? Jm you did they even
get close to Oregon? What do you think happens?
Speaker 6 (30:57):
I like, I do like Bama to get the win
because the first time they played Oklahoma one, but it
was statistically very lopsite. It tour Alabama, A and M
Miami is a really fascinating one.
Speaker 7 (31:07):
I'll pick AM just because they're at home.
Speaker 6 (31:09):
I do not think those group of five teams. I
mean I would give to an a chance just because
maybe Ole Miss, you know handling the coaching change is
a mess. I have a feeling that's not the case. Also,
it's hard to get back to the fact they played
already and All Miss crush them.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
Stuart Mandel, The Athletic The Audible Podcast, thanks again for
join us. Happy holidays to you, sir, and we'll talk

much everything right Coverky, It's good to talk to him.
He's on the beacon plumbing hot joining us. Hello, far On.
Speaker 8 (33:02):
This is a lot of Greg Bell for me. I
just heard you on Sicarison Price. It was this morning,
you know, and then and then you talked about the
guy that the line when the Seahawks signed on you,
and then you had to mention from Oregon, like, why
do you have to do that?
Speaker 2 (33:14):
I did.
Speaker 8 (33:15):
That's that's not good I did. That doesn't add to
his resume or his credibility in anybody's eyes in Seattle
or or certainly not my Like, what is that.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
You texted me? Last time? Was already in bed, but
you keep the midnight oil. Yeah, and you texted her Yeah,
I'm sorry when I didn't hear the phone, but you
were asking me what do I know about this crack
and postgame. We didn't bring it up yet with a
crack and flagship station, but journalistically I have to bring
up that that is absolutely bush league that an NHL
team or any team would only let the team employee
(33:49):
ask the coach question. He talks for sixty three seconds
and then he's out after a ninth loss, in ten games,
and after a game that the Kraken played very well
last night against the best team in the league and
in the blue using at the end. But I'm going
to ask you far, haven't you been around the NHL
or any pro sports college sports franchise for a while.
Have you ever seen a little stuff like that?
Speaker 8 (34:10):
Yeah, that's a little different. You know, I didn't expect it.
So when I saw yourself and Mike Burrell and others,
you know, post on it, I'm like, what. And generally
I just always saw the Sea or the Cracking do
a pretty good job and their VP of broadcast and
Chris Brumwoll is a good friend of mine and professional
as they come, used to be up here working for
the Canucks, and and you know, like, boy, they could
sure use a Chris Brumwell because when I look at
(34:32):
I think of what's happening here in Vancouver, and it's
not a really good media situation right between organization and team,
and really hasn't been for the last few years. So
I was surprised to see it in Seattle, and so
I kind of did a little bit of digging and
that's not on brand for them, but you know, and
what I learned is that it wasn't intense, like it
wasn't planned right. I don't believe that they went into
(34:54):
that post game availability with the intention of only letting
their in house team reporters asked the questions and then
shut it off. I think there was, you know, a
bit of frustration because they've lost nine to their last
ten and you know, you lose to a really good
Colorado team last night. But you know, and I think
there's I think there's a feeling certain times there there
(35:15):
might be kind of you know, newer reporters and sometimes
you know, you ask questions that are you know, a
little strange and awkward, and I think there was they
were wanting to make sure that that didn't happen at
that time because you know, maybe Lane was on edge
a little bit. But again, I as soon as it
happened and the feedback started coming back, I think there
was a lot of regret within the organization. I don't
think they were going to double down. I think through
(35:37):
you know, throughout some of the day, they have reached
out to people who were who were there and have
made an attempt to make sure they understood, look, we
we should not have done that. There were some mea
culpas going around, and that's not what we're going to
continue to do. And that's that's not standard practice with
the Kraken. So you know, given what we've seen from them,
I just I'm not gonna throw them under the bus.
I just think generally they do the things, they do
(35:58):
things the right way, and I think they'll go back
to that really quickly. And I think it was just
handled poorly, and I think they acknowledge that and are
going to fix it.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
Yeah, that's on top of losing nine out of ten games.
It's easy for fans to jump on top of that,
on top of that, but that's interesting context.
Speaker 8 (36:14):
Well, if you're in the crack and you're getting buried
right like, there's a big football game tomorrow night, I'm
not sure if you've heard about it. Seeing as how
you spent all your time watching Army Navy this weekend,
I don't know if you covered the Seahawks anymore. So anyway, no,
I no you did. I'm just kidding for fans that
don't know, right, I was in the Seahawks the media
(36:35):
meal room, and you know, literally like fifteen minutes before
the game. Greg Bell just is sprinting in down the
hallway trying to get there, make sure that he's got
enough time for his meal before he sits down on
the seat and gets ready for the game. So you
you worked hard to get through the military training paid off.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
But anyway, well thank you. Yeah, lets people forget all
I do is I think I did. And it's like
six pm the night.
Speaker 8 (37:01):
Before the cracking can easily get buried in the market,
right and Seattle's a great sports market, but we all
know what's number one, and that's the football team. When
you get to this time of year and you're the
cracking and you're not getting enough success right now, right
Like the team's not great, they don't have a superstar player.
There's there's not a lot of compelling around the kracking
(37:22):
right now, so it's easy to get buried and there's
something like that happens, and now you're getting a little
bit of attention for that, you know, I think that
is disappointing for them, So you don't want to have
to deal with that as well. So I wouldn't expect
to see it happen again.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
As you said, let's talk about something even more compelling
tomorrow night the first time a Thursday night football game
in NFL history has had two eleven plus win teams
going at it against each other for the NFC West
title and the number one seed. And I laid out earlier,
as you know, far on the winner's likely or at
least on track to get to the NFC West title
and the number one seed. But the loser is going
to go down to five and they're going to have
(37:55):
three road games. I have to play to get to
the super Bowl. I know Mike McDonald's team's thirteen and
two seasons on the road, but that's not a recipe
to get to the super Bowl. You saw the Rams
last week or the last time the Seahawks played the Rams.
You saw that game. You're gonna be there tomorrow night.
What are you expecting? Do you expect a different Sam Donald?
Do you expect Mike McDonald to still seem to have
(38:17):
Sean mcvay's number defense against his offense?
Speaker 8 (38:21):
Yeah, I mean it looked defensively, McDonald's been very good
against McVeigh, you know, and when you think about how
mcveigh's offenses were able to own Pete Carroll, there certainly
is a start contrast there and that doesn't mean they've
always won, because we look at that game four weeks ago,
and it was the defense did everything humanly possible to
win that game. I mean, I think there was a
time in that game where actually turned it off because
I had to get to a kid's activity and I
(38:42):
thought I was going to come back to a blow out,
and I went what And they were right there despite
four innerceptions and four interceptions with some bad field position
attached to it, and yet the defense just kept punching back.
And next thing, you know, it's a two point game
and Chattle's got a chance to win with a really
long field goal at the end, and you know, and
they couldn't do it. But you know, and I know
that Donald has had a propensity to turn the ball over,
(39:04):
and nowhere was it more egregious than in that game.
And when you go back to just big picture, you know,
I think the Seahawks were a better team with Sam
Donald than they were with Gino Smith. But both of
them had turnover issues. And in the case of Donald,
in certain games, it's the volume, whereas in the case
of Geno, it was always at critical times and locations
in the game. Right Like you know, red zone turnovers
(39:25):
and things of that nature. So I think if Donald
can prevent the turnover, which he's done in the last
two games. You know when you knew in those last
last three games, really given who they were playing on
the other side of quarterback, if you just don't turn
it over, you're going to win the football game. And
it went right down to the wire this time, but
ultimately that was the winning formula. So if Donald doesn't
(39:46):
turn the ball over, I think they've got a chance
in this game because they absolutely would have won the
last roam without it.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
I agree with you. I think the Seahawks have a
Super Bowl cut up with defense. If their quarterback doesn't
turn over the ball, they can get to the super
Bowl because they can win tomorrow's game and get that
number one seed and get the first round by I
have only two wins to the Super Bowl. Is I
think it's Darnold's turnovers is the key to the entire thing. Now,
you're gonna get on a plane tomorrow night after the game,
go red Eye and get the Norman Oklahoma, which is
(40:12):
no easy Seattle do Norman. Oklahoma's not exactly a lot
to watch. Alabama and Oklahoma Oklahoma got Bama in the
first game, and now in the College Football Playoff it's
back in Norman. They beat him in tuscal Loosa the
first time. Alabama dominantd most of that game until the
end and lost. Calen de boor people talking about Michigan,
I don't think. I talked to the Stewart Mandel this morning.
(40:34):
He doesn't think that Alabama's gonna run Caylen de Bor
out of town even if they lose tomorrow night or
Friday night. What do you expecting an Alabama Oregon and who?
Who do you expect? Indiana's number one? But I don't
even think they're the favorite, are they?
Speaker 8 (40:49):
No, they're not at Ohio State and my trip got canceled,
and then the next I'm doing the next three rounds
of college football Playoff. I was supposed to go to Norman,
but we just couldn't make it work terms of how
much I would have by the time I got there,
I would have been missing a bunch of shows, So
just it didn't work. But I'm looking I'm looking forward
to watching that game and then attending a bunch of
(41:09):
other games going forward. I'll be at the Cotton Bowl
in two weeks for the Ohio State winner. I think
they take on the winner Texas playing them in Miami,
and yeah, and you know, when I look at it,
I still think Ohio State's the best team in the country.
And you know, when you look at that Indiana game,
Ohio State had so many opportunities in the red zone.
You know, they they're inside the five yard line on
(41:29):
two occasions, and they come away with one field goal,
and they you know, they there was more there for
them to have. I thought they were I thought they
were a better team. But Indiana, certainly, for real, I
don't want to dismiss that. And Mendoza is a worthy
Heisman candidate. This Alabama team, they're frustrating to watch, just
the level of inconsistency. You know, you go to about
(41:50):
week eight of the season and Ty Simpson, their quarterback,
was a legitimate Heisman Trophy front runner, and then things
and kind of you know, in certain games have kind
of gone downhill. And you know, the game they played
at home against Oklahoma, you know, that was one of
John Mitier's best games. And then John Mittier, who Washington
State fans are certainly fully familiar with, right He's had
(42:10):
some games where you're thinking, what the heck is happening?
And I know he's dealt with injury as well, so
like I do think it's a somewhat wide open field
outside of James Madison at Tulane. But you know, I
do think the top two teams, in my mind are
clearly the top two teams. They're not unbeatable like I
thought last year. Ohio State's team was unbeatable, and Notre
(42:32):
Dame in the championship was kind of fictionally close right,
like they were behind a lot, made a bit of
a comeback, but never really we're going to close the door.
Ohio State was so much better than everybody else. I
don't think that's the case this year, but I do
think there's a clear one too. And what Kurt Signetti
has done in Indiana in two years is just insane.
For him to have had that last year and then
to back it up again this year and even be better,
(42:53):
It's wild to me that you could turn it around
even in the current era of college football. What he's
done is really impressive.
Speaker 2 (42:58):
Pittsburgh quality, Suor, I will see you tomorrow night. Thank
you for joining us far on logy of TSN in Canada.

December this time next year, but he did specify Seattle
in Las Vegas. He mentioned him as two cities that
the league is looking at very closely. To see if
they will expand from thirty to thirty two. TI James
Kirby Moore was introduced yesterday is Washington State's new head
football coach. Native of Prosser, of course, went to Boise
States that he grew up as a kid going to
(45:07):
Martin Stadium games when he was ten years old. He
avoided talks of loyalty. Of course that's a big issue
with Jimmy Rodgers just leaving after one year to bolt
for Iowa State. But Kirby Moore emphasized the quote exciting
brand of football un quote He's going to unleash on
the poloose. And of course tomorrow night is the biggest
regular season game yet in the NFL, eleven and three
(45:29):
the Los Angeles Rams eleven to three Seattle Seahawks at Lumenfield.
And here to talk about no better man in Seattle
radio new media to talk about it, nose big games
better than anybody. The coach, Mike Holmgren. It's a pleasure

Speaker 9 (46:22):
Sir, Hey, Greg, good to talk to you. How's it going.
How was your trip?
Speaker 2 (46:25):
Oh? It was good. It was fantastic, Mike. It's like
a reunion. I get to see classmates I hadn't seen
in ten, twenty thirty years. We have a reunion in
the back of one of the sections at the end
of the first quarter and take a class picture and
I see guys that I hadn't seen for years, and
it's that's so coolm yesterday. Yeah, thank you, it was
really fun, really fun. Happy holidays to you and your
(46:45):
wife and your great family. Thank you for being on.
Speaker 10 (46:48):
Thank you you know this game of morn, I Mike,
the weather, the rain's supposed to stop, but they're talking
about wins during the game of twenty miles an hour
gusting to forty.
Speaker 2 (47:00):
As a coach, and as a coach and a guy
who was so intricate in the quarterback play, how does
that affect your game planning, your play calling or does
it do you just roll with what your plan and
deal with it.
Speaker 9 (47:13):
No, No, it has a great effect on it if
the wind is gusty, if it's that bad. Yeah, I
remember a game we had to play against the Bears
on Halloween night and the wind was so bad that
our first punter kicked at fifteen yards, good punt, straight
up in the air, but it blew back. One of
(47:35):
the two of the punts that Chicago kicked landed on
their side of the line of scrimmage. And so, and
I remember our tight end coming off. A ball was
thrown to him and he dropped it and he goes,
came off and he goes, Mike, you know, I don't
have great hands anyway, but the wind, don't throw to me, man,
don't throw to me anymore. So that's a long answer
(47:56):
to your question. But they have to take that into consideration,
no question about it.
Speaker 2 (48:01):
So how do you do that? Do you call shorter passes?
Do you run it more? Do you tell your punter
to line drive, low kick? Everything? What changes in your coaching.
Speaker 9 (48:09):
Goes all all three of those things. You know, far
in that game I was talking about he has a
very strong arm. But you know, we had to throw
the ball short. And then you have to depend on
your running game. And you know the way the Hawks
have been running, you know, you just hope that that
they cranks it up a little bit, you know, if
(48:32):
the weather's that way, if.
Speaker 2 (48:34):
When you see the run. You mentioned the struggles, and
last week it was two point three yards per carried,
the fewest of the season. They're fifth to last in
the NFL and yards per carry, yet their number one
and running plays forty eight percent of the time. What
do you see the issue being, Mike.
Speaker 9 (48:51):
Well, I think it starts upfront. Honestly, they've had some
injuries up front, and my my thinking is that I
played against Mike Shanahan's teams. I played Dance Kobex teams
coached against them, and that style of offensive play. Oftentimes,
those linemen aren't the big, crunching, huge guys. They're the
(49:14):
movement guys, and they're the people that can come off
together and then go to the second level and all that.
And I see, I don't see our line that way.
I see our line as bigger and kind of sluggers.
And so if they're trying to implement that style of play,
which they are, it's really important to them, then I
(49:35):
think that's that's been a little bit of an issue
up front. That and the injury thing. Charbonnay and Walker,
you know, they come under some criticism, but you know
better than anybody great the running back you got to
have blocking up front. I don't care who you are.
You got to have blocking up front.
Speaker 2 (49:56):
Walker has three or four guys waiting on as soon
as he gets the ball the last few weeks, No,
I know. Yeah, As an aside, Mike, would you bring
him back on a new contract running back position, being
what it is, how injury prone it is, would you
invest money on Kenneth Walker and give him a deal
beyond this year?
Speaker 8 (50:14):
You know what.
Speaker 9 (50:15):
I'm a Kenneth Walker fan me too, and so I would.
But you know, hopefully we get a little something going
here at the end of the year. But how they're
doing it is another thing. I don't know how you
feel about it, Greg, but how they've kind of, you know,
switched them on and off and on them off. Sometimes.
The running back in a game, I know, it's different.
(50:36):
Now every team has two running backs and they got
a little chip in their shoulders saying you can only
take this many steps in the game and all that
kind of stuff. But in years past, the running back,
you had a good running back. He carried about twenty
five times a game, right, And with that you kind
of get a feel. You get a feel of how
(50:56):
the game's going. And oftentimes the statistic secol part of
it will improve as the game goes along. And I
think part of it is that, you know, Walker gets
ten carries, Charbonaye gets ten, and maybe they never quite
get into that groove where Okay, I know I've seen it,
I know what they're going to do. This is what
I'm going to do. I don't know that for a fact,
(51:18):
but I think there's there's a possibility of that.
Speaker 2 (51:22):
I hear you and coach, I mean, Walker gets you
between the twenties and then get inside of twenty and
they go to Charbonne and right, if you're from Kenneth
Walker's perspective, you're like, man, I've got three games left
in my contract. I'm auditioning for a job in the
league next year.
Speaker 9 (51:36):
Yeah, and that, and quite honestly to think to say
that he doesn't think about that at all. Yeah, I
think you're being I think you're a kidding yourself. You know,
he don't take me out. I mean he's handling it
pretty well, but I can score the touchdown. Leave me
in the game.
Speaker 2 (51:55):
Right, No, he's absolutely, I can tell you first tend
he's he is thinking about he has noticed that. The
coach Mike Comer joining us on the night before, the
day before the biggest game of the Seahawks season against
the Rams tomorrow night. Coach the Rams, as you know,
Sehn McVay, always the innovator on offense, he's now going
to thirteen personnel. Nobody in the league has run thirteen
more than the Rams. They're at twenty five percent, while
(52:17):
the rest of the league's averaging five percent of one
tight one running back and three tight ends. I would
posit to you, I'm gonna ask you how you feel.
Do the Seahawks are they uniquely equipped with nick Emon
Worry and how they deploy Devin Witherspoon and Julian Love's versatility.
Are they uniquely equipped to counter thirteen the most NFL
teams or how do you see Mike McDonald combating the
(52:38):
thirteen personnel tomorrow nite?
Speaker 9 (52:41):
Well, I think they are. I think im you're worry.
He's a he's a kind of a tweener, you know.
He's he's a big defensive back, but he's they can
use him as a linebacker, as a movement guy. He's
got great speed and he's a tough guy, you know,
And they have people like that on their defense. And
what strikes me, Greg, is that Mike McDonald, first of all,
(53:03):
is an outstanding defensive coach. They do a lot of
different things, and they're able to do a lot of
different things because of the four guys up front, and
so they Yeah, it's a unique thing, and you have
to have an answer for the three tight end. Look,
you have to have an answer otherwise. And the Rams
are a good running team, right, So that'll be that
(53:24):
That'll be a point of emphasis this week, no question
about it. But you won't see too many different things
on defense, particularly and the other fact, it's a short week.
You know, you only get a couple of practice days
and then you're playing the game.
Speaker 2 (53:39):
It's twenty twenty five. Mike Omran, if you had your
packer teams or your Seahawk teams, how would you offensively
attack Mike McDonald's schemes and the hybrid nature of Nick
even worry and the four down linemen have been so effective?
What would you do to try to find holes? What
would Mike Combran's recipe beat against Seattle's defense?
Speaker 9 (53:58):
Well, my recipe would be what. I don't think it's
that much difference from most teams. One. If you get
too fancy in too many plays in your in your
arsenal the way that Mike moose his defense is around,
I think you make a huge mistake. So you kind
of I would I would limit, actually limit a little
bit of what's on my play sheet, but make sure
(54:21):
the guys know how to handle it and how to
execute it properly, and then just go after it with
a lot of I'm a big play action guy and
I'm a big screen guy. That was a big part
of our offense, and we got to be good at it,
and so I would hope That's that's how I'd use it,
so keep the defense a little off balance so they
(54:42):
just can't tee you off and get after you that way.
Speaker 2 (54:45):
Speaking of scripts and plays and charting, Mike, the Seahawks
starting on offense has just been abysmal lately. They zero
points into the second quarter against Minnesota six' sixth tie
into the third quarter at four When. Atlanta then last
week we saw the problems they had both in the red,
zone not even scoring a touchdown four drives with inside
(55:06):
the thirty five yard line and not getting a touchdown
on any one of. Them the. Starters mike McDonald calls them.
OPENERS i believe you were from The bill wall school
of maybe fifteen or so scripted offensive plays to start a.
Speaker 9 (55:18):
Game, yes, right, yeah, Yep gary Kuby.
Speaker 2 (55:22):
Gary excuse. Me Clint kubyac said yesterday he does about
ten to. Twenty he didn't want it for competitive, reasons
limit down to how many. Exactly but when you look
at how The seahawks, start when you look At clint
kubyak scripted, plays what do you? Notice what might you
tweak to jumpstart an offense against one of the better
defenses in The league tomorrow.
Speaker 9 (55:40):
Night, well and that's that's WHAT i talked about. Earlier.
Greg you, know if you, know all of a, sudden
The rams are going to be charting how The seahawks open,
games kind of a pattern of play, calling and everyone does.
That so you're playing a really good defensive, Team you're
playing a team that matches up well with. You so
(56:01):
you look at that and you do you do something.
Different if all of a, SUDDEN i got seventy five,
Percent i'm running on first down or whatever the number, Is,
Okay i'm going to pass the ball on first. Down
i'm going to run it on second and. Long i'm
going to just change it up so they can't their
call against what they think will work. Against my run
is going to be. Different my call is going to be,
(56:22):
different and see if that. Works you, know the first
FIFTEEN i did fifteen plays After Coach wallash kind of
did that and taught, me AND i did fifteen and
it usually worked pretty. Well you, know you kind of
this is going To i'm going to gain four on this.
PLAY i didn't. EXAGGERATE i was trying to be, honest
And i'm going to wind up in second and six,
(56:43):
blah blah blah. Blah but then the fifteen that just
is first and second down. Calls then you go to
your third down and, short third and long, whatever you
go to another part of your play. Sheet so the
first fifteen is really should really last for about thirty
and so you, know it's a. PUZZLE i agree with,
(57:04):
you it's a puzzle how they start the. GAME i
would like to see a little bit, more something a
little different to start the, game not just run run, fast,
uh really get play action going that that'd be the.
Speaker 2 (57:17):
Thing, now you have such a big array of playbook
that you've been working on Since, april and OTAs how
Much mike can you change in that script and what
you've been asking the players to do versus play what
you ask them to do tomorrow night on just the
three days between, games or do You maybe.
Speaker 9 (57:32):
That's a really, no that's a really good. Point and
you have to be really careful about that because it's
a short week and they're used to learning and practicing
and installing at a certain pace during the, week and
now all of a, sudden you don't have that. Pace
and not only, that the, guys some of the guys
(57:52):
that you can't practice they got to heal, up and so,
no you have to be careful with. That of course
you're going to have some new. Things of course you're
gonna ask some new, things but you're not gonna be
able to practice them very. Much so it's important for
the for the team and for the offensive. Guys, okay
that really knuckle down and. Study but then you, know
(58:14):
you can't change too.
Speaker 2 (58:15):
MUCH i can't be the first smow in this. Station
it's going to pin you down and ask you what
you think is gonna happen to? Night but what are
your predict what's gonna happen, Tonight, mike tomorrow.
Speaker 9 (58:24):
NIGHT i THINK i think it's gonna be a field goal.
GAME i really. DO i think you have really two
really good teams and a really good. Division and you,
KNOW i was an old forty nine er, coach so
the forty nine ers are involved in this thing down
the road as. Well oh, yeah you, know but they you,
got you got excellent. Coaching you have both teams play
with a lot of. Intensity the, weather the weather is
(58:48):
going to be a. Factor so but then both quarterbacks
are playing, well it's gonna be a heck of a.
Game this is a this is a playoff game with
three games left in the. Season.
Speaker 2 (59:01):
Exactly, well great to talk to you, Again. Mike i'm
miscovering your way back in the day in your First. Seattle, yeah,
yeah you know.
Speaker 9 (59:07):
What i'm glad you had a great. Time and AND
i THINK i told you my granddad was coming On West,
point SO i DID i have a LITTLE i have
a little bias in that game. Myself.
Speaker 2 (59:17):
YEAH i appreciate your lean toward The army. Team think
you might all the best Of kathy and your. Family great.
Holidays i'm Sure i'll see you. Soon Thanks.
Speaker 9 (59:24):
Mike all, right same, You.
Speaker 2 (59:25):
Bud thank, you. Sir Mike homeran the coach The Super bowl,
winner joining us tonight before the big. Game he, says
it's a fine. Line you can't do too much new
with only three days between, games and the coaches out
here talking about, That mike, McDonald, Gary, Gary you calling
Him Clint kubiak and even adding dirty yesterday talking about
we want the players to play fast tomorrow, night so
(59:46):
therefore we're not going to overload him with too much.
New Mike congran alluding to that there's only so much
you can do. Schematically that's that's. Challenge i'm they made
not the dumb down, it but they aren't going to
add a ton. More But Coach holmgren's, point they probably
are going to change up their, tendencies especially in their
scripted early, plays to try to throw The rams off.
(01:00:07):
Balance our thanks To Mike. Coleman you hear them all
over the, stations all over the different shows on our
station throughout the. Week i'm sure he'll be on tomorrow as.

Center seahawks head, quarters where we're going to. Talk i'm
going to talk To mike McDonald here shortly about injury
situation heading into The nord and It's Seahawks rams game
five fifteen in a. Luminfield the weather is starting to
get some attention and whether it's going to be. Raining
people keep asking it's the. Win That's Mike colgran AND
i discussed in the last, segment it's the win that's
the bigger factor.
Speaker 4 (01:01:28):
In The you're A seattle, team you, know you know,
rain but wind is that especially With ko Tol gordon
what he was talking about it Two chicago.
Speaker 3 (01:01:38):
Punks going beyond like or within the line of. Scrimmage that's.
Insane i've never heard of something like.
Speaker 2 (01:01:44):
That they switch out the balls even they do at
college football, too you know that testament they switch out
the balls for rain and so yes on every play
the ball is relatively, dry but it's the. Wind can't
switch out the WIND. Yep that music means it's text line.
Time we're going to read back our text at this
still unsponsored imagine it's still Unsponsored it's been months that
nobody has picked up a.
Speaker 3 (01:02:05):
SPONSOR i know every single.

SHOW i know five, times multiple times throughout every single.

Speaker 3 (01:02:18):
Line, okay well we have a. COMPLIMENT i know you're
not going to read.
Speaker 4 (01:02:21):
It so that's Why i'm going to start with these,
five says G.
Speaker 3 (01:02:25):
Bell it's, true so nice hearing you on the air With.
Jess great.
Speaker 4 (01:02:28):
Segments too many front runners that are that are loud
when The seahawks are, good but call them garbage when
they have an off game and don't know the game
as always army and the.
Speaker 2 (01:02:39):
Under that's, right it would have worked last.
Speaker 4 (01:02:45):
Week let's see this coming From. RON i may have
missed it with all this, talk but Coach holmgerm was
saying about scripted. Plays do you think The seahawks might
have been conservative in their play calling Last sunday in
an effort to discuss is their game plan For?
Speaker 3 (01:03:01):
Thursday?
Speaker 2 (01:03:02):
Yes, wow, yes, yes and yes they will never admit. That.
Right they want to treat every foe the, same AND
i don't want to sound like they're slighting The, colts
but they were holding a lot. Back AND i can
Tell i've been talking To Chucking book this week about.
THIS i know that in, Particular mike McDonald On defense
has stuff that he's been working on for a long
time that he hasn't shown yet because he doesn't Want
(01:03:22):
sean McVay too have seen it on film sneaky.
Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
Sneaky oh.
Speaker 2 (01:03:25):
Yeah and that includes how they use even, Worry that
includes how much they Blitz Devin. Witherspoon they are gonna
be things That sean McVay hasn't. Seen now that's not
breaking news because there's gonna be Things mike McDonald hasn't
seen From sean McVay. Either Come but to his, point,
yeah he wasn't going to show a ton four days
before he's going to play The. Rams AND i think
(01:03:46):
there was a good bit of vanilla in that plan
compared to what tomorrow AND i will be.
Speaker 4 (01:03:50):
Interesting All, right here we. Go rod wants to know

on that field for sixty, minutes except the all link
arms again like right, before right.
Speaker 3 (01:06:34):
After everybody's on the same.
Speaker 2 (01:06:36):
Team my, favorite my son's favorite moment of The Army
navy weekend In baltimore was When Lieutenant General gillen came

Him but as the time he had, yeah excuse, me,
sir the.
Speaker 2 (01:07:10):
Colonel the colonel was freaking, out and he's just.
Speaker 4 (01:07:13):
BECAUSE i think he blew off another interview to sit
down With, thus, yeah let's, see uh we have this
for coming from the three. Six so love the interview
With Annie Agar and then this person, says, goes well
both of us, People, yeah, NO I i love, Her
(01:07:34):
AND i think that people who don't know her and
just follow her On instagram or TikTok should also know
that she was in sports media. Beforehand she puts a
ton of work into creating the content that she, Does
AND i mean she watches every single game and then
goes when every game is in the, book she has
all her, notes and then she goes and studies for eight,
hours like you know.
Speaker 3 (01:07:56):
What's trending in social? Media who had the funniest? Quote
this and? That SO i just really love meeting.
Speaker 2 (01:08:01):
HER i give her credit for. That you're, right because
you can just pop off the top of your head

Speaker 3 (01:08:09):

McDonald i'm gonna find out About Charles. Cross i'll let

Speaker 4 (01:09:00):
Back thank you To Greg bell for filling in For
Ian fornest. Today jessman McIntyre here with you with a
jovial it's so, good so, good good at?
Speaker 11 (01:09:11):
Me, well how DO i get The gregg The Greg
belt deal and just do like eighty five percent of
the show and then just walk the hell out of
here for the final?
Speaker 3 (01:09:18):
Segment how do we get that?
Speaker 2 (01:09:19):
Deal?
Speaker 8 (01:09:20):
Man?
Speaker 3 (01:09:20):
Huh you know? What he's double duty ing? Today, okay no.
Speaker 11 (01:09:25):
Double duty shmubble. Duty what we do for a living
is not. Duty there's no duty ing. Here we haven't
had a real. JOB i haven't had one in thirty two,
years For god's. Sake SO i Know greg's you got
to take off and go see What mike McDonald's all
about and really checking. IN i guess right On Charles
cross and his status for tomorrow. Night the last time
an injury update came, out, Right, jess we Had Charles
(01:09:46):
cross projected as a D np after the evaluations that
took place at THE vMac. Yesterday SO i don't, Know
i'm not a real smart, guy but that'd be a
pretty big. Loss AND i have your left tackle tomorrow
night against The.
Speaker 4 (01:09:59):
Rams, Huh, YEAH i would think so that that is
a pretty big, factor especially considering the main criticism for
the stalling offense in the last game against The colts
was that it started up. Front so you, know getting
a left tackle, back AND i, mean is he what
percentage healthy is he going to be if they get
him in?
Speaker 3 (01:10:17):
There, yeah well we're going to find.
Speaker 2 (01:10:19):
Out.
Speaker 11 (01:10:19):
YEAH i, MEAN i would think that they would have
to go pretty far down the list before the yank
him and not have him played tomorrow. NIGHT i, mean
he would have to, be you, know not able to.
WALK i would assume they're not going this. One that's
the biggest game The hawks have played and probably eleven,
years going back to twenty, thirteen at least in the
regular season. OBVIOUSLY i, mean that's the last time they
were eleven and, three For god's.
Speaker 2 (01:10:40):
Sakes BUT i don't.
Speaker 11 (01:10:41):
Know i'm looking forward to tomorrow AND i hope The
hawks have all their bullets in the chamber for tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:10:47):
Night, well, yeah it's the biggest.
Speaker 4 (01:10:49):
One and one thing That Mike holmgren Told greg earlier
today was that he thought that that coach MacDonald purposely
landed his game plan right in the last, game so
he did not want to Show sean mcvagh, anything and
he did admit they will never admit.
Speaker 3 (01:11:05):
That they will absolutely never admit.
Speaker 4 (01:11:07):
That, however does think he was extremely cautious in his Conservative,
Yeah AND i.
Speaker 11 (01:11:14):
Would think that part of that play calling against The
colts was what was on the other side of the
ball With Philip. RIVERS i, MEAN i don't think they
felt like they really had to score fifty points to
win that game On, Sunday, Man SO i, mean it's
easy to do, That jess, right to kind of go
vanilla when you got vanilla on the opposite. Side but
it'll take a lot more than, that you. Know dick
asked you obviously On monday how Much kubiak has been
(01:11:37):
sitting on the entire year that he hasn't shown. Yet you,
know there's probably a ton that he didn't show against The.
Colts i'm certain of, that like you just talked, About
BUT i don't know how many surprises there are between
these two teams for Tomorrow night's, game to be honest with.
You So i'm looking forward to seeing what kind of
Impact Rashid shaheed has in this, game, because let's face,
(01:11:59):
it all of a, sudden The seahawks may have the
deeper and the better wide receiving corps With DeVante adams
maybe not playing tomorrow night And Poukin nakua kind of
being the only big guy they have at that. Position
there was a big conversation about that Before game. One
who's got the better wide receiver? Corps and all of
a SUDDEN i might be In seattle with The adams.
Speaker 3 (01:12:18):
Injury, yeah, Absolutely and, also did do you See pook
yes and?
Speaker 2 (01:12:21):
Off?
Speaker 3 (01:12:22):
Yes, yes, yes a live.
Speaker 11 (01:12:24):
Stream well here's the thing about, that every conspiracy theorist
out there who has been banging the table for, years
if these guys are just making calls so they can
get ON tv and blah blah, blah and they're fixing.
Games all he did was give him a bunch of
gas for their fires with those. Comments AND i Heard
Mark james talking about it today Because Mark james reminded
(01:12:45):
us on his show that he's been telling you that for.
Speaker 5 (01:12:48):
Years OH i, KNEW i.
Speaker 11 (01:12:49):
KNEW i knew that these guys are making calls to
get ON. Tv but it's not always the head ref
that's throwing the. Flag, no it's a side, judge a back,
judge alive, Judge empire or. Whatever so you're telling Me
mark And. Puka you're telling me that the head, Referee
Sean hocyley, whoever Because mark mentioned his name, today the
(01:13:11):
head referee is going to the back judge and, saying,
hey would you throw a flag SO i can get ON. Tv,
yeah you're telling me that's what's going On. BIRTHDAY i
want to, say, YEAH i don't buy. THAT i don't
buy a lot of, nonsense BUT i don't buy that.
Speaker 4 (01:13:23):
ONE i would say in, baseball you could make the
biggest argument for that just because of how much they
make a show of. Themselves, yes umpires THAT i could see,
you but it's almost it's you're gonna be ON tv.
Regardless in that, situation it's just making the big, call
the exclamation point and the fist bump on a, strikeout those.
(01:13:46):
ONES i JUST i always got the impression that they
wanted to be.
Speaker 11 (01:13:49):
THIS i JUST i just think baseball is totally different
because of what you talked, about, Right there's a lot
more dramatics. Involved, YEAH i, mean can you imagine if
football adopted the baseball attitude towards making a call and
a referee took the mic and, said, ah here's what we,
got holding over the first down that? WAY i, mean
how freaking hilarious would that Be IF nfl officials started
(01:14:12):
calling game like, baseball like calling games like baseball.
Speaker 4 (01:14:15):
Umpires, WELL i always really appreciated the giving him the business.
Speaker 3 (01:14:19):
Call, yes that was one of my.
Speaker 5 (01:14:21):
Favors, yes that.
Speaker 3 (01:14:22):
One i'm, like, okay but it's never going to become the.
Speaker 11 (01:14:24):
