(00:04):
All righty, we got breaking newsJess mentioned as a possibility in the last
couple of minutes. It has happened. The Kracking have made a trade.
Alex Windberg traded to the New YorkRangers Seattle Can return. This is courting
Emily cap Won, the first fromESPN, the first to report that this
was going to happen. The actualtrade first reported by Pierre lebrun ESN and
the Athletic. In return the Krakenwe get a second round pick in twenty
(00:28):
twenty four and a fourth round pickin twenty twenty five. The krack Can
do have to retain fifty percent ofthe remaining salary on Winberg. He's a
UFA after this year, so it'sjust the last whatever twenty games of the
season. That's a salary cap move. The NHL is a There is nothing
like the NHL salary cap. Thereare teams that manipulated on a nightly basis
(00:50):
that you have to manipulate. You'veseen guys even be called up this year,
but the Kraken and then not evenplay. They won't even ever hear
because of salary cap issues. It'sjust it's the fifty percent deal. Second
and fourth. Is it enough?I don't know. Probably whatever, he's
gone, you get something out ofa guy that you weren't going to resign
anyway, you know, I thinkof Alex Weinberg is a guy that,
(01:11):
to be honest with you, andwell, Thomas Drants is going to join
us Sole. We'll get some SeaUK talk in a second, but I
just want to wrap this up realquick. With Alex Weinberg. This season,
he was averaging zero point four totwo points per game over an eighty
two game schedule that ranked three hundredand eighteenth in the National Hockey League.
(01:34):
I know there's metrics that say he'sa good player at the other end of
the ice defensively and things like that, but he's a top six in other
words, Well, he led theteam in terms of forwards in average ice
time per night. He was gettingmore playing time and producing less than anybody
on the roster for that ice time. So he's off. He's gone.
(01:55):
He moves on to the Rangers, who use him as a death piece and
probably a third line center for ateam that's going to the playoffs, and
see gets a couple draft picks ThomasDrants from the Athletic wal join us at
two o'clock. He'll break that downlook ahead to the trade moves we can
make. Will also do a littlebit more of that coming up at one
forty five Daily power Play the Crackand coming off a win last night against
the Winnipeg Jets, Manitoba a thetop team in the Western Conference. Big
(02:20):
win, too little, too late, maybe not six points out, maybe
not. We'll discuss that as wellwith Drantzer and also during the Daily power
Play coming up. It's one ofthe things we've heard about that team.
They want to They really like eachother, like sticking around. They kind
of did that last year. Youremember when they were a playoff team at
this time last year they were.It was a foregone conclusion and Ron Francis
(02:45):
didn't rock the boat, didn't doanything to, you know, upset the
apple cart. Famously, Jerry Depotoa couple of years ago, in a
similar situation with the Mariners, tradeda very popular player. Clubhouse went nuts,
people were breaking things and all that. In this case, Francis didn't
do that. Steady stay std Patprobably could have made a move to help
the team, but hell, theyplayed fourteen games, they played two series
(03:07):
eight, they went as far asthey were gonna go anyway, So maybe
a good move last year. Thisyear, time to move, time to
sell, no matter if they're inthe playoff race or not. So we'll
get more of that later on.We're gonna get to one thirty. I'm
gonna do something a little bit different. There's two things in college sports that
just boggle my mind, and youas a college sports fan. We we'll
get some feedback from you on thatcoming up then as well. A couple
(03:28):
of stories out there that we haven'treally touched on this week, So we'll
get to that at one thirty today. In just a second, Kurt Warner
was on two days ago with us. Had so just one of my favorite
interviews in terms of guests that I'vehad on in a long time, the
Hall of Fame quarterback, former Ram, former Cardinal play a year for the
(03:50):
Giants. I really it's fun tohave guests on that aren't from our market,
that aren't regulars, that are thatare in aged with us, not
just doing it. He was filledwith information and opinions, and there's a
couple things regarding the Seahawks and theirquarterbacks that we're going to get to in
(04:10):
just a couple of minutes, sostand by for that before I go any
further. Before I go any further, at one oh seven pm on March
six, twenty twenty four, Ido want to say this. I do
not want to. I don't wantto forget or miss or anything else.
I don't know. I don't wantto get this out. I don't do
a lot of this on the air, but I do want to. I
(04:33):
want to wish my mother a happybirthday. It's her birthday today, and
she she listens to the show allthe time. I'm assuming she's listening now,
if not on the an MP three, Jess send to him. I'm
good at that, but I cando that. But I do want to
wish my mom a happy birthday. The old Canadian is as kicking, as
strong as ever, and I'm expectingI I got I dropped off a little
(04:56):
gift for her. Nobody likes avodka martini more than my mother, and
I would hope that that is goingto happen here in the very very very
near future, like is in minutesfrom now, because you know what,
it's five o'clock somewhere. I wasjust going to say, it's happier or
everywhere is it? It is?It's one oh seven Pacific time. She's
Canadian, it's five o'clock in Newfoundland, so she can have in all what
(05:17):
the hell where you go? Buthappy birthday mom, And she's the reason
and along with her father, mygrandfather, that I have a love for
the sport of hockey and so bornin moose Jaw, Saskatchewan many years ago,
grew up in Nelson, British Columbiain the Interior BC, and a
Canadian through and through, Oh Canada. So big happy birthday to my mother.
(05:42):
Okay, I want to four nine, four to five one Telemroo text
line. When it's game time,it's time. We will take your text
your thoughts, questions, concerns andcomments today. Also will always take those
via the voice text as well. You can go to the iHeartRadio app and
fire away give us a thought, comment, question, concern on the iHeartRadio
app. Do that as well.On a couple of things. Like I
(06:04):
said, I got just a coupleof college things I'm gonna hit on.
Throw Jess's way as well coming upat one thirty, get a reaction from
you. One of them has todo with Caitlin Clark. Actually a lot
of it's Kitlyn Clark, but it'sa little different angle. We're gonna take
today with that, okay, AndI'll before people get upset or I love
(06:25):
everything about Kitlin Clark. There arevery very very few athletes in and maybe
I'm just maybe I'm old and jaded. There's very few athletes in this world
that I think are worth the priceof admission on their own, no matter
who they're playing, who they're playingfor, where they're competing, and oop,
(06:46):
sorry, I probably should turn offmy speaker. My apologies. The
you know, no matter who they'replaying, who they're playing for, what
the game, what the event, whatever it is, she fits into that
category. Like she fits into thatcategory. She's remarkable. But at some
point there's a line you've got todraw on the sand with certain things,
including financially and who wants to payher and things like that. We'll get
(07:11):
to that coming up in a littlebit. So Kurt Warner comes on the
other day with us, and wewanted to get him on because he made
a comment in regards to the scoutingcollege football quarterbacks. This is pre Combine,
and he made a comment on Twitterhow hard it is to scout college
football quarterbacks because of how they play, the structure or lack thereof that they
(07:34):
have in college. It's just kindof a hard It's become very hard to
do that in his mind, andI thought it was a fascinating tweet.
Well, obviously we got into amillion other things in this world that we're
living in right now. Every team, and it's always probably been those like
but it feels more so recently. You're just you're chasing the franchise quarterback.
(08:00):
It's the ultimate chase in the NationalFootball League. And when I say a
franchise quarterback, you're chasing the guythat you believe can take you to and
win a Super Bowl. And youknow, like, there's one guy right
now that you can feel one hundredpercent comfortable can do that. In the
National Hop and the National Football League, there's only one guy that you can
feel one hundred percent comfortable, andthat guy's name is Patrick Mahomes. Only
(08:24):
one guy. Lamar Jackson can't winplayoff games. He's the MVP a couple
of times, right, but youcan't. He can't win. He can't
win playoff games. Nobody knows.I'd say there's a better chance he can't
win a super Bowl, Lamar Jackson, than he can't because he's had opportunities
with great teams, hasn't done it. Justin Herbert, massive talent, incredible
(08:45):
talent, hasn't won a super Bowl. Yes, there has to be help
around him, but you're chasing thatgreat, elite quarterback that can carry you
when everything else is falling apart.I think for a long time we thought
Russ was that guy, right,I mean, and I'm the first guy
to take a shot at Russell Wilson, everything about how he ended things here
(09:07):
and how he treated people and everythingelse. I mean, I will he
got He's got everything he deserved. It was like a slow leak of information.
Every year we kind of got alittle bit more distaste. It just
towards the sparkling that it was Russ. Yeah, and and but you know
what, Jess, he I hegot everything he deserved. But in his
prime, in his prime, don'tever take anything away from Russell Wilson in
(09:33):
terms of what he could do.And they won a super Bowl and went
back to a super Bowl because ofa historic defense filled with if not well
for sure one Hall of Famer andBobby Wagner, but more than likely at
least another one. I mean Sherman, despite all his off the field transgressions.
Richard Sherman should be a Hall ofFamer as well. You could make
a case for Earl. Might bepretty hard to do. Cam won't go
(09:56):
to the Hall of Fame. Didn'tplay long enough, didn't acomplish enough in
terms of being an All Pro enoughtimes, things like that. But you
had this epic defense and we allknow, and a running game that was
second to none with Marshawn and areally good offensive line. But make no
mistake, there were games Russell Wilsonwon for this football team. There were
times, there were drives that hewas able to carry this team on his
(10:18):
back and get to and get intothe end zone. Russell Wilson could win
you a Super Bowl. I don'tknow if you can. Don't think he
can anymore. I'm not sure ifthere's a belief anymore. Not so much
even with as much with him asanybody else. Probably, but Russ could
do that. But the franchise quarterbacktrying to win a Super Bowl. It's
a great topic of conversation and it'sa great debate here in Seattle. Because
(10:39):
when Geno Smith's contract roster bonus wasguaranteed and then they restructured it all that
stuff. The first debate was well, as that make it easier for him
to trade. Bleacher Report had thestory last weekend that they're committed to him.
It feels like everyone now has kindof resigned themselves to they're committed to
Gino Smith in twenty twenty four. And I'm not one that's going to look
(11:00):
past one year in the NFL forthe most part that the NFL's will win
now league. It might be alittle different now with this organization because the
head coach doesn't have the final sayso there's not the the urgency maybe by
John Schneider and he's got a firstyear head coach. But they still want
to win every year, and theywant to win now, and they've got
enough guys in the place that thereis no doubt in that organization that the
(11:22):
goal is to get back to thepostseason and to take a playoff run.
They think they can do that canthey do with Gino? So I asked
Kurt Warner the other day, andI wanted to comment on the other side
on this because we didn't have achance really to discuss it. Kurt Warner,
Hall of Fame quarterback, guy thatknows the position inside and out,
studies it every week for the broadcastand for NFL Network and everything else.
(11:43):
I asked him about Gino Smith andDrew Locke, and are those the guys
that can take this team of thenext love Well, Gino, I mean,
obviously, you know last year,I should say two years ago,
he was so good. It hadsuch a great year, and it was
fun to see, you know, sitting down talking to him now and seeing
how he's matured and the leader thathe's become. I thought he played great
(12:05):
football two years ago, and youknow it warranted, you know, a
contract and the extension and getting achance to be the starter. I didn't
think he was quite as good thispast year. And I think that's where
the questions really come in, isyou know, the bottom line is with
any of these guys, whether you'reevaluating a college guy or a pro guy,
is who is he like? Whodo we expect him to be week
(12:28):
in and week out, year inand year out. And so when you
guys had Russell Wilson, it waseasy to know, like this is who
Russell is? We got to seeit. We got to see it from
an early stage, We got tosee it all the time. We can
do what he was going to be. I think right now with Gino,
it's like, Okay, which genois the real Geno? Like, who
are we going to get moving forward? If we, you know, stay
(12:48):
with him or commit to him,or he plays out his contract all of
that stuff, who are we goingto get? We're going to get the
Geno from two years ago or theGino from the last year. And that's
always what's hard. And you've gota guy that hasn't played a whole bunch
of starting football in the NFL istrying to figure that out. I do
think there's no question he is asolid starting quarterback in this league. But
(13:13):
you know, every team is lookingfor that guy that can take them to
the next place, and I don'tknow if we know for sure if Gino
can be that guy. Drew,on the other hand, as much as
I like Drew, I just havenever seen the consistency from Drew to think
that he can be that guy.Very very talented. You saw him this
year. I called the game upthere where he came in and led them
(13:35):
back and got the win for himwhen Gino wasn't able to play and did
some really really good things. AndI've seen that at numerous times when he's
played throughout his career, but I'venever seen the consistency where he makes the
layups, he sees what he's supposedto see, and then he makes all
the throws he's supposed to make.So I think he's a really hard guy
(13:56):
to build around. Probably one ofthose guys going to be a really really
quality backup for any team for along time, but don't know if he's
ever going to move into kind ofthat that starter franchise type player. So
I certainly not a ringing endorsement foreither guy. It also sounds exactly like
(14:20):
what John Schneider and I'm guessing MikeMcDonald and maybe Ryan Grubb most importantly out
of those three, to be honestwith you, it's probably what Grub's thinking.
I think Grub's going to have.I would I would hope that this
is a team that gives that guya lot to say in terms of of
that particular position. Hell, Ilook what he did with Michael Pennix,
who two years ago was fighting samHewart on the backfield at Husky Stadium,
(14:43):
getting third team reps while they, you know, fake their way through an
actual quarterback competition, laughable as thatwas with Dylan Morrison and sam Ryan Grubb
knows this, knows how to developa quarterback and knows what a good quarterback
looks like. I hope they givehim some juice. But I heard that
initially and now I hear it again. The first thing that came to my
mind is they've got placeholders. They'vegot two placeholders. They've got two guys
(15:15):
that can navigate their way through aseason, win some football games, but
they aren't guys that you feel like. And I know there's an age thing
with Gino. He's not that all. He's in good shape. I don't
that's not an issue. The injuriesis not, like he said, blown
out ACLS or anything like that,or shoulder label or anything. I don't.
I don't put the stock into that. But I think when you listen
(15:35):
to Kurt Warner, you hear that, you hear two guys that are placeholders
and nothing more. Moving on fromGino this year would have been hard with
everything being new as it is.I think having the leadership in the room
for Gino Smith, and make nomistake, he's very well respected. I
think his leadership can even take anotherstep forward if there's no distractions on the
(15:58):
other side of the locker room.Thirty three. I think that this is
a guy that can be an integralpart of what you're doing. But this
should be the last year, andI'm sure it is going to be the
last year financially in otherwise, Ialways wondered if Drew lock could be the
next guy, you know, couldhe be the guy that takes that next
step. It doesn't sound like KurtWarner believes that, and so now is
(16:22):
the time to draft a quarterback. My takeaway from Kurt Warner is they've got
to find the next guy sooner thanlater, and I hope it's this year.
I still hope it's not with sixteen. I hope they move down.
I think they've still have some otherholes. They can address some holes in
(16:42):
the roster on the defensive line andthe offensive line. But boy, when
I heard Kurt Warner, the firstthing that I thought of was, go
get them this year. Go getthem this year. Go find a guy,
and maybe this is the time andthis is the position. If it's
not number sixteen overall. If it'slater in the first round or early in
the second round, sometime in thethird round, maybe this is the year
(17:06):
to try to be the smartest guyin the room and go take a flyer
and a guy, and don't wastea first round pick on a quarterback.
Because if there is a significant dropoff from may Daniels Williams, although Warner
likes Michael Pennix quite a bit,but if there is a significant drop off,
(17:27):
you probably are gonna have a guythat you want to come in and
stick behind somebody for a year.Anyways, let's wait a little a little
bit longer, but maybe now isthe time to go get the guy.
I think we all knew Gino wasn'there for the long haul. The question
was Drew Locke, and even listeningto Kurt Warner there I expected more effusive
(17:47):
praise for Gino Smith and it didn'tcome. It was what you heard there
was. Yeah, man, he'skind of a journeyman. He's all right,
he can get you through and hecan win some games. Okay,
But when Gina was here and hewas Russ's backup, how many times did
we use the following phrase, Wow, Sea X have one of the best,
if not the best, backup quarterbacksin the league, and worst case
(18:07):
scenario, he can navigate your waythrough a few games, which a couple
of years ago when Russ got hurt, he did just that, only won
the one game, probably didn't doquite as much as they had hoped,
and it just didn't work out right. So then Russ leaves and he's kind
of handed the keys to the car. For whatever reason, Drew in COVID
(18:30):
whatever they saw, leadership, whathave you. But now is the time
to go get one. Now isthe time to go get yourself another one.
And it's got to happen this year. I thought all along listening to
Schneider say that, you know,we didn't feel good about not drafting it.
I didn't feel good about not somethingI'm proud of not drafting a quarterback
over the last fourteen years. Now, go get a guy, Go find
(18:52):
a guy, make him your guy. And the good thing is you do
have Geno and hell, you canprobably sign Drew Locke for penny on the
dollar. He's a backup, that'swhat he is. The Other thing that
came to mind there is that noone's gonna sign Drew Lock for a ton
of money. They're just not right. There's not a big competition there.
No, It's funny. I alwaysthought Gino outperformed what I considered him as
a bridge quarterback. He reminded meof t Varis Jackson in that sense,
(19:15):
just in peace. But it justI think he outperformed my own pass.
There are some there are some similaritieswith him and T Jack and and I
know people say, oh skin no, nothing to skin Coller. T Jack
twenty eleven played with a torn laborhe got. He had so much respect
(19:38):
in that room because of what hewent through, and he was the perfect
backup, understood his role, didit well the year he was he was
the starter, played admirable and wasa guy. I mean, that's why
they brought him back in twenty thirteen, twenty fourteen, right, because they
brought him back because the guy wasso well respected. That's kind of who
(19:59):
g know what plays Supayne plays todo whatever. But yeah, now Gino,
yeah, you're right, probably didoutplay his you know, as a
bridge quarterback, as a guy that'sjust kind of there as a stop gap.
Probably did outplay that. But really, truly, and I've been fighting
it. I'm bringing this all up. This is therapeutic for me today.
I'll be honest. I know it'stherapeutic for me because I kind of been
(20:21):
fighting it. I kind of like, ah, you could probably win with
Gino. You can probably win withGeno. You can probably win with Geno.
Gino's fine. He's got to lookat Brock Purty almost won a Super
Bowl. I mean, Gino's gotbetter arm talent than him. I mean,
you could argue who's a better quarterback. But you know, I know
this, when when there's been adrop of rain it, Gino Smith doesn't
fall apart and melt like like BrockParty does. So yeah, he's fine.
Now, Seattle doesn't have the rosterSan Francisco has, right, they
(20:44):
don't have that roster around him,So you need that position to be a
little bit better. In fact, putting that roster that's around Rock pretty together
is really hard to do in today'sNFL. So you do have to find
a guy that is better. Sogo find a guy that is better.
When we come back, let's switchgears a little bit, little college action.
A couple of things kind of burningme up all week that I haven't
got to we'll do that next dailypower Play one forty five KRACK and have
(21:07):
made a moved Alex Wemburg to NewYork. We'll talk about that and what's
next. Thomas Trants will join usfrom the Athletic at two o'clock all on
nine three point three KTERFM. Nowback to the in for Nest show brought
to you by Snow. Call meCasino Bracking to just send out a press
(21:37):
release so they make an official AlexWindburg's gone. More than that coming up
later. NHL trade deadline is Friday. We'll check you with Thomas trans from
the Athletic at two o'clock today.I'll special tomorrow for the final scheduled Apple
Cup of Basketball. Well, we'llget a former former Wazoo player, one
of the guys that was on thetournament teams the last couple tournament teams.
He'll join us tomorrow. Will teaseyou with a little bit of that coming
(22:00):
up. Getting ready for the gametomorrow night in Pullman at six o'clock.
You can hear that game by theway right here on ninety three point three
kr FM five point thirty pre gametomorrow usually Husky Basketball over on the nine
to fifty am do. But we'regonna bump it over to the big,
big flamethrower that is ninety three pointthree KJR FM tomorrow for that game as
(22:21):
well. So I want to jumpin on this. And I mentioned I
had the unpopular take I was goingto give you on Monday. I never
got to it. We got swarmedwith other stuff and kind of got overwhelmed.
Never got to it. I'm drivinghome, I'm listening to Softie and
Fame, and Softie had very mucha similar take and a similar opinion.
I should say that I had.I'm going to take it a little bit
(22:41):
different direction. But over the weekend, Caitlin Clark became the all time leading
scorer in NCAA Division One basketball historyfor men and women. Okay, I
understand that. I guess that's athing. I didn't know we were keeping
track of combined stats for men andwomen. It bothered me in a lot
(23:04):
of fronts. I'm gonna go todifferent and go down a different road in
a second, but bother me ina lot of fronts for a couple of
reasons. And SAFTI kind of broughtthis up, and I agree, first
of all, why they're two differentsports. If you can't see that,
then you have then you're the onethat has a problem. Understand, Caitlin
Clark is one of the few athletesin our world today that she he themselves
(23:33):
can sell out an arena without helpfor anything else. Opponent game magnitude doesn't
matter. She has been selling outwomen's basketball games in the Big Ten,
where a lot of the teams whereshe's selling out arenas not only I've never
had to sell out before. They'reaveraging less than two or three thousand a
game, and she's selling games outthroughout her conference. It's remarkable home and
(23:56):
the road. That's what I meanexactly. Her teammate means nothing. I
always sell out. That's because ofher. She's selling out places that draw
five hundred people a thousand, twothousand people a game. She's selling out
buildings. Nobody in the men's gamecan do that right now, ZAKII will
be a two time National Player ofthe Year. He can't do that.
And Zakiy's a fun player to watch, but we've all seen seven footers play
(24:18):
basketball before, and he might gothirty and twenty on you. We've seen
that before. She can do that. She can sell out an arena.
Shoho Tani will draw fans. Heprobably won't sell out every ballpark he goes
to, right, that's not goingto happen. She's a unicorn. She's
an absolute, flat out unicorn. She averages thirty two points a game.
(24:41):
Why do we have to compare herto Pete Maravich. Why is that?
I'll tell you why in a second. It's network and it's TV driven,
which is the entire problem right nowwe have with college sports. The networks
and the networks and the TV folksare running college athletics, and it's embarrassing.
(25:03):
By telling us this that she's brokenPete Merovitch's record, we're taking away
from who and what she is.Let her stand on her own. She
is the greatest. You know.Jay Williams, I think it was on
ESPN on the Game the College GameDay a couple weeks ago, said,
you know, he didn't want togo as far as see she's the greatest
or something, and he defines greatnessas only winning a championship and a title.
(25:23):
Okay, so Dan Marino wasn't great, Charles Barkley wasn't great. Let's
go through the list of people thatweren't great. That's fine. You do
you there, buddy, If youcan't see that she because to me,
greatness if you want to use intangibles like having to win a championship,
if you want, if that's theroad you want to go down, despite
the fact that every hall of Famefor every sport is filled with people that
(25:44):
never won championships. But if that'syour criteria, that that's your opinion,
to me, you kind of soundlike a fool, but so be it.
She's going into the whole fame. But no, but he's his point
was that she wasn't great, likethat was his thing. She wasn't great,
And you know, he's defining greatwith winning championships. And my point
is that's everyone everyone thought that wasa ludacris okay, But what I think
(26:04):
is ludacrous is that that we haveto compare her to Pete Maravich. The
greatness for me to her is ifI want to use the intilligible as what
I just said, she sells tickets, She sells tickets, she gets people
to watch, she gets people excited. Number two, the number that we're
that we should have been looking atand have to look at that to me,
(26:26):
defines how great she is as aplayer, has nothing to do with
Pete Maravich, who did it inI mean, if we want to compare
it, fewer games, three years, no three point shot against men,
different game. It's just a differentgame. To think that it's not a
different game, it's stupid. Wedon't say who's the all time leading scorer
(26:48):
in women's hockey and compare them toWayne Gretzky. Right, I guess you
can't really do that. PWHL juststarted. How about all time leading home
run hitter and softball? Are wecomparing that now? I mean, what
are we doing here? The numberthat jumps out of me. She is
the all time assists leader in theBig Ten. Wrap your arms around that.
She averages thirty two points a game, but she also has set the
(27:11):
record for assists in the conference. She distributes the basketball as well. That
to me, it should have beenthe story. Nope, we're gonna compare
her to a guy. Okay, that said, this is what really got
me going, because I heard thoseguys talking the other day yesterday to Wilner,
and I just spent a weekend inPullman and had an unbelievable time.
Jim's going there tomorrow. Whether it'sPullman, whether it's Manhattan, Kansas,
(27:37):
it doesn't matter. Tallahassee Florida Collegeathletics to me are never going to be
the same. But this is whatjumped out and just kind of made me
want to throw up. The storythat came out a couple of days ago.
John ourand has it, who's beena longtime media writer, a sports
media writer for a long time sportsbusiness journal. Now I think he's with
(27:59):
something called Poker's something like that, not our pock but another pock a well.
He said that there was a storygoing around their discussions going around before
Caitlin Clark decided to go and announcethat she's going to WNBA, that Fox
may have been in cahoots with ESPN, which isn't as crazy as it seems,
(28:22):
since they're going to have their ownlittle streaming service. They're already in
bed together to try to put togetheran NIL deal to keep Caitlyn Clark in
college for one more year. Now, think about the ramifications of that for
a second. First of all,she should benefit, and she should get
(28:44):
whatever she can from almost whoever shecan. But at what point do we
draw the line in the sand, because let me just throw this at you.
What happened last year when we're goingthrough the college football Playoff, which
is owned by wait for it,ESPN and AB's well, an undefeated Florida
State team got left out. Now, I'm not saying there was a conspiracy
(29:07):
there. The committee did their job. They looked, the quarterback was hurt.
I get it. You can makean argument for against it, however,
you it's a subjective thing. Butnow we're gonna can you imagine if
a network or networks we're paying aspecific college athlete to play, they're already
runing conferences. We know that firsthand. They've already ruined conferences. So now
(29:30):
while you say who cares? Whocares? How would you like it now
that you're in the big ten Huskyfans if ESPN and Fox specifically Fox makes
me sick saying that Fox is saying, hey man, this five star quarterback,
we're gonna give him our own nildeal from Fox. So he goes
(29:51):
to not Washington, not Rutgers, not Maryland, but Ohio State. Benefits
benefits us greatest. Actually, youknow who had been to fit them best?
USC and LA market. So we'regonna allow that to happen. I
mean, we are on the brinkof the greasiest era in the history of
(30:14):
sports, not just college sports, just sports network's paying college athletes. John
Oren's a reputable guy. This wasgonna happen. I think she's crazy to
go into the WNBA myself. Hersalary cap now, she has to know,
has to have all kinds of guaranteesfor all kinds of different endorsements,
because her max salary next year islike seventy five thousand in the WNBA,
(30:36):
so she's getting more money elsewhere. She's gonna make her money. I think
the max you can make in theWNBA is two fifty you know, the
super max contracts, what have you. Obviously she will get endorsement deals and
things like that. There must besome sort of guarantee. Hell, whoever's
got the WNBA rights ESPN, theygonna pay her extra. What do you
if you're a player elsewhere in theleague, what are you thinking of?
That? Is that cool? Circumventingthe salary cap because the network's gonna pay
(30:57):
her. Like the network's involvement insports now, it should trouble you as
a sports fan at some point, you need to have some sort of equity.
Salary caps are set up for thatreason. Hell, the Kraken just
had to keep fifty percent of aguy. They just trade his salary so
they can get under the salary cap. But what if the network wants to
pay Caitlin Clark going to the IndianaFever extra money that circumvents the salary cap.
(31:22):
Who's to say they're not going todo that. They almost paid her
to keep stay in college. Ifyou're coaching at Ohio State women's program,
which beat Iowa this year by theway, I watched that game, incredible
game. If you're coaching Ohowa,Ohio State going to wait a second,
they're going to pay her to stayand kick our ass again? How messed
up is that somebody goes in theportal. This kid goes in the portal
(31:45):
top quarterbacks. Say you've got aquarterback playing for name a team a San
Diego State next year. That's justunbelievable. Has this year is like,
oh god, most highly sought afterguy's going to go this? Well,
maybe Fox wants to give him adeal to go play at Michigan next year.
Like, be careful for what youask for all of everyone's saying,
we've got to pay these guys andlet it do, no restraints. Away
(32:07):
we go. Caitlin Clark is she'sthe canary in the cave right now.
What I mean, she could havevery easily taken that money, and who
knows what she could have made, because I'll tell you this, maybe Juju
Watkins at USC who is averaging twentyeight points a game as a freshman,
maybe she can carry the women's gamein the next gender, you know,
(32:28):
in the next generation or the nextcouple of years. Maybe. But when
Caitlin Clark, Angel Rees, CameronBrink, when they all leave, it's
gonna be a little different looking. And I understand why they paid money.
They like having three point two millionpeople watch women's basketball. They're not gonna
be three point two million people watchingwhen she's not playing anymore. Trust me,
(32:49):
they didn't before, they're not after. I'm not being the ugly man
saying that's just but that's I mean, the numbers don't lie, it's literal
stats. Yeah, So, butI just I'm it's so sickened by where
we're going in college athletics. Thevery networks that ruin the PAC twelve are
trying to now dictate players staying going, turning pro not turning pro. What's
(33:10):
to stop those same networks from dictatingwho plays and goes where? Now from
the Starrunnles Sports to us Jordan ninetythree point three KJRFM Sports headlines. These
headlines are brought to you by Buddies, Goodies and glass. It is always
four twenty f Buddies. The crackingcame up big in another thriller last night.
(33:30):
They took down the Winnipeg Jets fourto three, Burukhovski coming up with
the game winner and the final minutesof that one. They sweat their two
game road series, and we'll geta few days off here before facing the
Jets on Friday at seven o'clock righthere on ninety three point three kjr FM.
And we got the breaking news earliertoday Alex Weinberg on his way to
the New York Rangers and a tradethat we were expected to see. We
(33:52):
recently learned that they will net asecond round pick in twenty twenty four,
a fourth round pick in twenty twentyfive, and we'll retin fifty percent of
wen Berg's salary so that one isin the books. Matt Brash returned to
throwing again after his injury scare. He is rehabbing from a medial elbow inflammation.
Mariners don't plan to rush him backto full go. Washington State head
(34:15):
basketball coach Kyle Smith one of thehottest names in college hoops right now,
but he says any talk of anextension would be tabled until after the season.
Seahawks made another move today, releasingnose tackle Brian Monett. He appeared
in forty one games for the teamsince signing in twenty nineteen. U Dub
set to break ground on a newsixty million dollars basketball practice facility you dub
(34:37):
women's hoops. They enter their finalPAC twelve tournament on the bubble for the
big gents. Now it's time toget into the show. Ring up Thomas
Drants in the second second hour ofthe show, brought to by a snow
call me Casino Snowcasino dot com.I'm trying reading this correctly, So the
(35:00):
pack twelve women's basketball tournaments underway.First game's done. Number five Colorado defeats
Number twelve Oregon. Here's a funnything. Initially, I'm looking at that
going damn Oregon's twelfth in the country. No, it's those are the seedings
for the tournament. Number five played, number twelve. Okay, I only
(35:22):
bring that up for this reason.Look at this the final score in this
game. Colorado seventy nine, Oregonthirty. Let me repeat that. Whoa
seventy nine to thirty in a conferencetournament game. How is Oregon going to
(35:44):
survive in the Big Ten with sportsnot named football? They're not. They
lost by almost four well forty ninepoints, almost fifty points. I mean
not since the days of Paul Grahamor Ernie Kin have I seen score like
that and Pack twelve basketball. Luckily, those are long gone. Kyle Smith,
(36:04):
you mentioned this in the in theupdate, Kyle Smith saying he's tabling
it the Kyle Smith rumors. They'regoing to persist, They're gonna happen,
They're going to take place. I'mwith Puck, he said this earlier.
I'm with him. I'm not whatever, man, I'm not gonna let it
take a second away from my enjoymentof this incredible season, getting back to
the tournament for the first time sincetwo thousand and eight. Man, I'm
enjoying every second of it. Whateverhappens down the road, happens. Can't
(36:28):
control it. Enjoy it. Ifyou're a Wazoo fan, enjoy it.
Just just take it all in andenjoy the stuff and away you go as
well. Okay, real fast, before he called drants. Brian Monegue got
released today, but forty one careergames for Satt didn't play it all last
year. Was on the physical physicallyunable to perform this. There's no way
they were going to pay him thekind of money he had coming off of
(36:49):
that not being able to ever getback on the field last year. He
is a definite candidate to bring back. He's three hundred and forty five pounds,
He's a monster in the middle,and I think I think that they're
going to probably end up trying todo that along the way, see them
bringing back pennies on the dollar. But yeah, the monet as the you
know, the casting a side ofroster spots for the Seahawks continues. It's
(37:09):
going on throughout the NFL. JordanPoyers, everyone's gona be talking about him
coming to Seattle because's a safety buffaloto him. Go Today as well,
it's that time of the year. It's also that time of the year in
the National Hockey League, where Ithink for the first time really in our
three years of having NHL games orany an HL team in Seattle, I
think for the first time we canactually enjoy a little thing called the trade
(37:31):
deadline. Why last year because theylike to keep the team intact, and
Ron Francis liked what he had andthey didn't want to rock the boat.
They didn't do really much year beforethey were out of it by I don't
know, November. This year theygot expiring contracts, one of which they've
already moved. Some other things couldhappen as well. One guy I go
to, well, there's a lotof guys I want to go to,
(37:53):
but he answered the phone today,Thomas France from the Athletic Joints US Right
now on the Beacon Plumbing hotline, drants Er, how are you, buddy?
Wow? What an endorsement? AmI getting caught here? Hey?
You know what? Yeah, you'reyou're basically John Schneider has said, you
know, Durants, he's out,he's out, he's done, he's gone,
he's out of here now. Buthow are you, man? Fun
time of the year, right,Yeah, I mean I'm protected by a
(38:16):
toxic dead cappet. So I'll befine. But no, I'm doing well.
It's uh, it's been a funmorning of hockey news, lots of
trade activity. Already dreading what I'mgoing to fill time with on Friday.
But but yeah, it's gonna begonna be an interesting forty eight hours in
the National Hockey League and the Cracknerat the center of it in a lot
(38:37):
of ways. I love that. And just for for I mentioned this earlier.
You know, we're all kind ofyou know there are I think you
and I talked from the Connects intown a coup weeks so there's a lot
of hockey fans here. There's beena lot of hockey fans in Seattle,
in this market for years, whetherit was going back to the Totem days,
going back obviously the Thunderbirds and andthen the Silver Tips later. There's
a lot of fans here of thesport. But this is kind of new
(39:00):
for a lot of a lot ofthem even and and a lot of people
here. The whole trade deadline Iwant to give in all in all seriousness.
First of all, the athletic isthe you guys do a terrific job.
There's if you're an athletic subscriber, and we use we use a lot
of guys from the athletic on ourstation, uh every week on every show.
But the hockey coverage, to meis is fantastic. So if you're
(39:20):
a trade deadline and NHL guy fan, go check out what they've got going
on and and and Thomas has gota unique perspective. He's he's on our
side of things right now. Butbut tell people what you did in your
previous life, because you you you'vekind of seen both sides of of what
we've got coming up. Yeah,I've been a PR guy, so I've
worked. I've been in more roomson NHL Trade deadline Day, coordinating you
(39:44):
know, trade announcements and press releasesand media availabilities with the players just just
acquired or dealt It's been a lot. I mean it was a lot of
fun to do. I had theexperience of pulling a player, Derek Bissard
off the ice when he was tradedduring a morning skate on trade deadline Day.
And that was one of those tradeswhere he walked down the locker room
(40:04):
and then played against us that night, having gone again, having gone from
the Florida Panthers to the Colorado Avalanche. So yeah, I've got I suppose
I've done some trade deadline tours ofduty, both working four teams and then
also covering them from the outside. It's a fun time of year. It's
a nerve wracking time of the yearfor the people involved, for the players
(40:25):
involved, for their families. Butfor fans, you know, it's all
hope, it's all excitement, andthere's a lot of rumors, a lot
of Domino's still to fall here.So yeah, it's gonna be an interesting
forty eight hours in the in thehockey world before we get to Weinberg and
the Crack and Thomas you Can.I was asked this earlier and we discussed
it with the show before me,but I think it bears mentioning again.
(40:47):
The Wenburg being held out for acouple of games. That is kind of
the norm in the NHL. Howoften do we see that around the league?
And maybe you kind of explain whatgoes on into that. Well,
we see it at a greater clipnow or in recent years than we used
to. There was a situation lastyear with a player in Vladislav Gabrikov on
(41:09):
the Columbus Blue Jackets where he washeld out for like weeks. So yeah,
but being held out, you know, for a game or two ahead
of the deadline to protect the healthof a trade asset, that's common practice.
Jason Zucker, the winger in Arizona, is going through that at the
moment. Obviously, the Kraken dealtwith that with Alexander Wenberg in that manner
(41:30):
before trading him to the New YorkRangers today. And that's sort of what
makes the Krakens positioning nap so interestingto me is that they're not doing it
with Jordan Everley, right, andyou know, we know that every is
an expiring contract. If he wereavailable, he'd be the second best winger
on the market behind Jake Gentzel. He'd you know, absolutely command a haul
(41:54):
from any team interested, and there'dbe a lot of teams interested. Everyone
knows that Everly is this his gamein the Stanley Cup playoffs. Everyone knows
the quality of individual he is.But people also know that he's settled in
Seattle, that he likes it there. There's been, you know, lengthy
reports about the two sides working thehammer out and extension is it signal then
(42:15):
or is it noise that he hasnot gone through the Wenberg treatment and that
he's continued to play games for theCrack and even as the deadline approaches,
I assume we'll get our answer inthe next forty eight hours. Yeah.
I mean, by all appearances andwhat we're hearing, it sounds like that
they're working on something and he maybe. We always talk about this in
the NFL. I'm almost wondering ifAlex or if Jordan Eberley Thomas is is
(42:38):
he the rare hometown He's from Regina, so it's not quite his hometown,
but is he the rare home townfar from it? Is he the rare
hometown discount? Because I mean,I think for Seattle not to move him,
as you just mentioned, if thisis a guy that can help your
hockey team in the next few yearsand you could bring back a lot in
return to keep him and to wantto have him here, I wonder if
(43:01):
there's like if Ron Francis and companiessay that's great, but you know,
here's what we can offer you,and maybe it's not as what you'll get
on the open market somewhere. Yeah, I mean, you'd imagine that it's
a tough decision. Right. Ifit was an easy one, the negotiations
would probably be settled and the dealingout. But these are tricky. You
(43:22):
know, at Everly's age, there'sa somewhat reduced market, but everyone knows
this guy still has games. Hisproduction in terms of scoring has been down
a little bit this year, butin terms of his impact, what he's
done for the crack and whenever he'son the ice, I mean, his
two way game is still top ofthe lineup quality. He's a top line
(43:42):
quality player on every team in thisleague. So that's you know, that's
the one that I'm really interested inmonitoring. From the Seattle side is does
an extension get get done or not? My gut is that they'll keep him
in Seattle. I think he's tooimportant to the sort of culture that Francis
and company have been to build there. I don't think the team's playoff chances
are dead at all, given theway that they've defended over the last three
(44:06):
months, given the rate at whichthey've won games, although their their path
to get there is relatively narrow giventhe lead that the Nashville Predators already have
over them. And the fact thatthe National Predators clearly have decided not to
sell themselves, right, which issort of complicated as well. So,
you know, the Everly situation isdefinitely the one that I'm most interested in
(44:29):
seeing how it plays out among theKrakens trade deadline interests. You know,
I think we all had a prettygood sense that New York was going to
be in the market for a Wenburgtype player. That deal is now done,
the Everly thing still interesting to me, especially because he does fit the
template that a team like Vancouver wouldcertainly be interested in paying for in the
(44:50):
event that he does shake loose Tom'strash from the Athletics, joining us here
on the BEGCME plumbing hotline. Allright, So the drade that was done
today and the crack and have madeit official by announcing it them else as
well. The Kraken pick up atwenty twenty four second round draft pick and
a conditional twenty twenty five fourth rounddraft pick from the New York Rangers in
exchange for Alex Weinberg. Seattle willretain fifty percent of the remaining contract that
(45:14):
Weinberg has Salary cap issues. Obviously, you got to try to balance that
with somebody to make a deal done. Thoughts on what Seattle got back for
alex Wenberg from the Rangers? Isthat about what's expected? Surprise there wasn't
even a prospect or a human beinginvolved. Or was that basically what they're
going to get from him, whetherit would be the Ranger or somebody else.
Yeah, I mean that's the goingrate these days. You know,
(45:37):
in the NHL draft picks there's sevenof them. It's not like in the
NFL where the player is going toplay right away. Right. These are
morkin to like second round picks inthe NBA, where you're picking them to
put them, park the player inthe G League or park them in Europe
for a few years and cross yourfingers and hope that they become something of
value in two three years. Right. So it's a different sort of arithmetic.
(46:00):
Teams are pretty reluctant to part withprospects in part because the risks that
you get it wrong, right, the risk that the guy blows up looks
a lot different than the risk thatyou give up a draft pick and then
the team nails the draft pick andyou know you rew that in four or
five years. I mean that's it'sa more indirect risk to managers, and
I think that tends to be whydraft picks are the common currency around trade
(46:23):
deadline time. When you look atwhat other players have been going for,
you know, it makes sense, given the difference in their scoring profiles,
the difference in their two way impact, that Weinberg would have gone for significantly
less, for example, than aplayer like Adam Henrik, who the Anaheim
Ducks traded to the Edmundson Oilers todayfor first the third. There was an
(46:44):
additional player in that deal as well. Really, the Weinberg return looks like
a premium version of what the LasVegas Golden Knights, for the Vegas Golden
Knights paid to get Anthony Mansa,a big, you know, sort of
mercurial scoring winger out of Washington. They trade to the second and a conditional
fifth, So the Kraken effectively netteda little bit more than that, which
(47:06):
makes sense given the positional value thatWeinberg brings as a true pivot, you
know, a reliable defensive center whoalso kills penalties. And yeah, I
mean to me, that makes perfectsense. That's very much in line with
the market as it's formed, andpretty good work for the Kraken. You
know, the Kraken did really wellthe last time they sold to the deadline,
trading Marcus Johansson right for with fiftypercent retained to the Capitals, and
(47:30):
in that trade they were able tobring back a prospect, Daniel Sprung,
and we all know what he didfor the Krack in last year. So
I'm sure the Kraken would have lovedto put their pros coding the to the
test in bringing in an actual playeras opposed to draft picks. But this
Kracking team's drafted very well and thisextra ammunition will land them a pretty good
(47:51):
player, like a prospect that fora lot of organizations would be a top
five guy. The day is draftedin terms of you know, their best
prospect, and the Cracking will havean opportun and you need to draft someone
pretty good, but it will bea while before they actually play a role
at the NHL level. Thomas ThomasTratsman the athletic joining us other guys that
are rumored to be out there thatcould. I mean, the expiring contracts
are the easy rumors to look at. Uh, there's guys. Justin Schultz
(48:15):
is a right shot defenseman. That'susually something that is covered around the league.
There's Thomas tatar Uh you mentioned Everlee, Maybe you gotta you gotta help
Ron Francis out, a little Morian. You got to call him. Playoff
hero Justin Schultz, playoff hero, just multiple Stanley Cup winner Vanquisher of the
Colorado Avalanche. You got to givehim the Denari Stormboard preach. Playoff hero
(48:38):
Justice, playoff hero Justice Schult. What about Kyler Yamamodo. I mean,
I've heard Brandon. I've heard BrandonTanner's name, even though he's not an
inspiring contract guy that can kill penaltiesand you know, coaches love the way
he plays. Any of those guysyou're hearing could be on the move.
What are you hearing around the leaguewith those names? You know, it's
been surprisingly quiet around the Krakens, non expiring guys, right and in particular,
(49:06):
you know, there's a couple ofveteran players with two years left that
I think when deadline season approached, you know, two three months ago,
before the Krakens strung together months ofgood hockey, you know, there was
certainly some interest in like, hey, how will the Kraken proceved? The
likes of Yon Gord and Adam LarsenRight, either of whom would have immediately
shot to the top of every singletrade board, would be massively interesting to
(49:30):
every team, given their experience inthe playoffs, given the hard way they
play. But you know that there'sa reason why that hasn't come to fruition
that the Krack and clearly aren't interestedin doing that, And that makes sense.
I mean, when you really thinkabout how this team's played this year,
you know, it's tough to comeback in the NHL when you fall
(49:52):
behind early, and the Kraken did. And yet when you think about their
last three months, this is theteam that's played really good hockey. That's
a mass an impressive record. Youknow, given their success last season,
and given the fact that their bumpyseason this year really amounts to like a
five week losing streak in which theycouldn't buy a goal, you know,
(50:13):
I can understand why the Kraken wouldbe protective of what they've built and still
confident that this is a group thatcan get it done and be an annual
playoff. So I'm not shocked thatsome of the bigger pieces, the non
expiring pieces, haven't been heavily rumored. I'm a little bit surprised that no
one has been up for Justin Schultz, given his playoff pedigree, given the
(50:34):
need to move the puck in thepostseason, how important it is, so
that one's a little bit surprising tome. I have heard Brandon Tanna same
a little bit discussed as a possibility. But again, I think the Kraken
are wise to hold pretty tight towhat they've built here. I don't think
this season has been as disappointing infact as it looks. If you just
check the NHL standards. Tom's beforeI let you go, and we'll wait
(50:59):
and see. Uh, you knowwhat happens over the next couple of days.
I know you've had a chance tolay eyes on a couple of the
guys that are in their line andthe prospect line. We all know Shane
Wright and who and what Shane Wright'sall about. Uh, And you know
they put McCann in the middle withWinberg being out the last couple of nights
and Jere mccaton he's flourished there.I would expect that to say, yeah,
I think he's good, isn't he? I mean, he just in
(51:22):
He's just a horse man. Imean, he just looks like he's taken
a next step over the last youknow, last couple of games. But
you got him. Uh, CarsonRaykoff, Jager Fergus, those are both
two of the guys leading scorer, leading scorers. If not today, it'll
be tomorrow when they play games inthe in the Ontario League and the Western
Hockey League David Goyett as well inthe Ontario League Edward Solay their first round
(51:43):
pick last year. Any of thoseguys jump out or maybe any of those
guys not jump out at you, which would be a concern. Well,
I would just say that the CHLthis year doesn't seem to be at the
same level in terms of the qualityof talent up and down across all three
of the Canadian Hockey League. LeeHe's like the the overall quality of competition.
It's like a down year for it. So you've got some excellent players,
(52:07):
like excellent prospects. I'm definitely highon Purkiss, who are popping over
the course of this year. Butto some extent I look at it a
little bit differently than I would someother years in terms of what that means,
how much noise. There is aamidst that. I think it's a
noisy year in the CHL. Ithink the overall quality of competition has taken
a bit of a step back asthe US Hockey system, specifically the n
(52:31):
C Double a UH and then alsosome of the offshoot competitive branches like the
BHL rise in quality. I thinkthat's taking some talent out of the out
of the CHL pipeline, you know. With with recop over in Kitchener,
I did go see their game becausethey had Hunter Brustevage, the Cannucky prospect.
(52:52):
Hunter Proustevis was on his on onthe point running the power play for
that Kitchen Arrangers team. You know. I I think he's an excellent value
pick who's tracking decently well. Givenwhere the kracking, we're able to lay
hands on him. But I definitelythink there's a lot of growth to go
there before he's making an impact inthe NHL. Definitely more of a project
(53:13):
at this point. Into my eyes, I don't know that he's the straw
that really stirs the drink for thiskitchen or five on four attack that's been
one of the best in Canadian majorjunior hockey this year final thing. What
should fans expect? Will everything bedone by the deadline on Friday? Is
it like a flurry of activity onFriday at the deadline? You know,
we were used to other sports sometimesdown here is everything you get done before
(53:36):
Friday? What do you expect aroundthe league? How does it normally go
well? Based on the way thingswere tracking this morning, I thought everything
would be done before the deadline, but there's still some active situations. Honestly,
I would expect the big moves, the Gensel moves, the ones that
everyone's talking about. I would thinkthose dominoes fall before Friday, and Friday
will mostly be teams mopping up rightto the last little pieces, the last
(54:00):
few tweaks that you can make priorto the NHL trade deadline. I think
that's mostly what Friday will consist of. Definitely an exciting time of year.
It's a last chance for contenders toreally bolster or upgrade their rosters ahead of
the Stanley Cup playoffs. And thisis a pretty wide open field right like
this this year doesn't it doesn't feellike there's a you know, Vegas or
(54:21):
Colorado type juggernaut looming. You know, even even the Edmundton Oilers, who
i'd call the best team in theNHL this year. Frankly, you know,
even the even even that roster, you can poke some holes in.
So I think that could stimulate somesome unexpected aggression from teams in the final
hours. Certainly in our business,we hope that's the case, but it'll
(54:44):
be interesting either way as the deadlineappross. My friend, keep up the
good work. Go follow Thomas onthe olex and also make sure you check
it out at the Athletic on theNHL page. Thomas and the rest of
the crew do a great job coveringthe National Hockey League, especially this time
