(00:00):
China, new Osu joins US numberten for your Seattle Seahawks. He is
on the Beacon Plumbing hotline. Theyare in the midst of phase one of
OTAs and a new coaching staff, and Chenna joins us right now. Hello,
sir, how are you hi?How you guys doing? What's going
on? Man? How are youfeeling? How's the health? Man?
I hear you're good. In fact, I saw you in the hallway towards
(00:22):
the end of last season when Iwas doing a TV interview somebody else and
he's like, you said, yeah, I might be coming back if they
get to the playoffs. So I'mguessing you're probably pretty good. Yeah.
I'm doing a lot better now, definitely definitely feeling better. Is it is
like, would you say one hundredpercent? I mean, for people don't
know, you tore your peck lastseason October twenty second against Arizona and like
(00:43):
some of us don't really have pecksto worry about, but guys like you
do. So is it is it? Are you limited at all? Or
are you just getting after it?I'm getting after me. I'm doing everything
I can, you know, stillbeing smart about it. Of course I
wouldn't say one hundred percent, butI'm saying pretty close. I'm getting there.
I love it. I love it. Well, let's talk about what's
going on the world of pro athlea, professional sports, the NFL. It's
(01:06):
a season and I filled with changeall the time, Chinna, and that
was certainly what happened in the offseason. Let me just take us back.
You're a veteran, You're a guythat I considered watching you. You're a
leader on this football team. Sowhen you found out that Pete Carroll was
out, that coaching changes were beingmade and pretty much a complete overhaul,
with maybe like one small exception, what went through your mind? You know,
(01:27):
it was kind of a shock. You know, I didn't expect it,
you know, considering how long youknow, Peace been there and what
a great job he's done, andyou know, he's brought the Super Bowl
to the city and to the organization, So you know, it was a
shock, like whoa, you know, but I guess all good things must
come to an individually, right,So you know, it was just the
next chapter in life. You know, this is the NFL. You know,
(01:48):
it's constantly you know, everything's changing, So you know it's just the
opportunity for me, you know,to continue to grow as a player,
and you know, I'm looking forwardto it, I believe, and I
want to. I want to getto looking ahead more than anything in just
a second, but I do wantto look back a little bit because I
think it's important. We've talked toa bunch of X players over the last
few months, and you had acouple of years twenty twenty two, twenty
(02:08):
twenty three with Pete Carroll after beingwith the Chargers before that. I'll just
let you kind of put it inwords of a player and a veteran player.
Who and what was Pete Carroll toyou? And what is he to
football man? Pete Carroll He's afirst of all, he's a legend to
everyone, not even just me,but to everyone. He's a legend,
you know, from the college game, being at USC you know, watching
(02:30):
him in the league win that SuperBowl, and to now eventually being able
to play for him last these lasttwo seasons. You know, he's been
to lot to me. He's theone that brought me to Seattle, you
know, and I'm forever grateful forthat opportunity. Can you know without him,
I don't know where I would be. They all the kind of player
he allowed me to be on thatfield, the freedom he gave me.
You know, sound very grateful andthankful for Pete Carroll. And he's just
(02:51):
you know, it sucks to seehim go. I know he's buy out
there still itching the coach if hehasn't, if he's not coaching yet.
But I'm sure you know he's He'sjust everything he wants to accomplish. And
you know, I'm gonna miss himdefinitely. Who Chennan duos? Who joining
us here in the big pumpany hotline? All right? So he peeps out,
they go out and they hire aguy that a lot of people around
the league have been talking about.A lot of people said, this is
(03:13):
the guy. Mike McDonald is theup and coming. He's kind of the
it guy, especially as far asdefensive minds around the NFL. You guys
have had now at least a littlebit of time to spend with Mike McDonald
and his staff, uh and Dirteyas well, the defensive coordinator. And
so you've been around these guys McDonalddirty and the rest of the crew.
What do you think. I'm lovinghim so far? I'm loving. I'm
(03:35):
loving coaches personality, you know,I'm loving the other staff. Ad has
been great. These guys are justso willing to teach, which is which
is great. You know, youdon't really see that around the league as
coaches that want to to actually teachyou and help you learn. You know,
they just want to just slap thex's and o's on the on the
board and expect you to get it. But these guys are really invested.
They actually they seem like they actuallycare, and that's what you want,
(03:57):
you know, coaches that that actuallycares. And so I'm grateful for this
stat They've been doing a great jobso far. They've been helping me teach
the younger guys and helping us learnthings that we didn't know about or we
didn't realize. So I feel likeit's been a great staff so far and
I can't wait to get work withthem this summer. Get you get an
opportunity to to a guy that thatprobably does things a little bit differently,
in a staff that does things differently, whether it be a d or Mike
(04:18):
McDonald. What do you see different, What's what jumps out at you that's
different that from a player, standpoint. I don't. I think I saw
yesterday the news conference, no morebasketball as much and things like that.
Pete did things differently, but justfrom a football standpoint, what do you
see differently? Oh, I mean, I wouldn't say it's too much in
terms of a football standpoor. Youknow, football is football at the end
(04:40):
of the day. You know, you always got to go out there and
compete. That's the same thing, you know, Pete, you know,
emphasized last year was competing. That'sthe same thing these guys are emphasized as
competing, being the best you are, being tough, being physical. So
you know, football always going tobe football at the end of the day,
no matter really who's at the headcoaching. You know, at the
head coaching holm, I feel likeit's always going to be the It's all
about the ball. It's all aboutcompeting and getting better and being tough.
(05:02):
So you know, that's what thoseguys came in and said from day one,
and I just expected to, youknow, resonate throughout the locker room
and keep up all year. Itfelt like last year was strange in this
sense, Chinna, that we didn'treally like you kind of with a five
man front and a six man ora four man front, and kind of
it felt like they kept trying tofind how things could work with the personnel
that you guys had, Clint hurtand the old staff. Did you feel
(05:26):
like you were always almost in transitionlast season in regards to that, trying
to find something with fit and itworked well. I can't speaking for myself.
I can't because you know, whenwe first started off the year before
I got injured, we were rolling. You know the thing. We were
number one work not number one,we were like top five I think in
the league and stopping the run atthat time. Throughout the first like six
weeks or whatever, we were gettingthe ball, we were stacking the quarterback,
(05:47):
we were doing everything, you know. So I can't really say that
we were trying to struggle or findbut from when I was playing on the
field, I felt like we wererolling. We were doing good and everything
was working. It's hard always whenyou see a quote and you don't get
the whole, uh, you know, the whole context of the quote.
But you said yesterday, I feellike it's time to really get over the
hump. We've got all the players. I feel like we've got the right
(06:08):
coaches. Now, these coaches seemcommitted. What what what did you mean
by that? Yeah, I justfeel like, you know, sometimes you
know, when things don't work outthe last couple of years and you have
all these expectations, you know, guys just you know kind of get like,
dang, what's going on? What'sworking? So you know, maybe
it's kind of a good thing toget a you know, a breash of
fresh air or a clean slay andstart just completely over. You know,
(06:29):
a lot of guys and players, you know, worried about last year and
you know, contracts and these thingsto that, and so you know,
maybe just get a fresh start, you know, fresh feeling throughout the building.
You know, maybe change is goodfor you know, some people in
the lives and moving forward with things. So, like I said, I'm
looking forward to you know, thisnew chapter in life. And you know,
me coming back, especially from theinjury, I just feel like I
have a lot to prove and Ihave a lot left on that table,
(06:53):
and maybe a fresh and breadth therewill help me and help the rest of
the team, you know, justget over that hump, especially with all
that we have. I agree,I'm a spring it because I know you
get to lunch and some meetings andstuff. In a second, couple more
things one personnel wise, we knowwhat you bring. I think a lot
of times people forgot last season whenyou got heard October twenty second. I
took a huge, huge part ofthat defense out, and obviously the struggles
(07:15):
showed up statistically and on the field. Everybody could see that as well.
But there are some young guys theybrought back. Darryl Taylor, Boy and
Mafe kind of popped last year andhad a nice little stretch for a while,
got things going. Draymont, JaronReed, Leonard Williams is back in
the fold as well. I'll letyou speak just to those guys up front.
Some are called the linebackers like yourself, although maybe it's gonna be a
different terminology with with McDonald and aD. But just the guys up front.
(07:40):
Tell me about those guys, Tellme tell fans about how confident they
should be in a group that attimes last season at least statistically struggled.
Man, they shouldn't be worried atall. Man, those guys are some
dogs up on everybody who just namedyou know, everybody's just getting another year
under their belt, which is asmore experience, you know, so that
they should just look forward to adefense, a D line, you know
(08:01):
that's just going to get after it. Be tough, be aggressive, or
we're gonna make this a defensive thing. You know. I just got to
go out there and compete any waythey can. And you got guys that
are hungry to compete, you know, So that's that's really what's most important.
Guys that are hungry, you know, guys that want to prove,
some guys that just want to getback into football. So look forward to
it. I'll wrap it up withthis, you guys. I know how
(08:24):
I've covered this team since two thousandand six or seven something like that.
I've been around it for a longtime, and I know that whether it
was Pete, Mike Hombren more,I'll kind of slide them more a year
away, but Pete, Mike Holmgren, and certainly with the guy that bring
it in, I don't think theybrought Mike McDonald didn't want to take a
job that was a rebuild. Hecould have had a lot of jobs around
the league. They never use theterm rebuild, but you hear people talk
about that around like us, Seattle'skind of retooling. They're doing this,
(08:46):
they're doing that. I'm assuming youguys don't think of it that way.
You think of it, Hey,we're thinking about we're a contending team,
even though it's just April. Absolutely, absolutely, we were a contending team
every year. We have the likeI said, we have the raw,
we have the players, you know, we just we just got to put
all together. And that's what's reallyall it is. We're definitely a continuing
team. You know, we havea quarterback. You know, when when
(09:07):
you don't have a quarterback, youdon't stand a chance, you know.
So when you got a quarterback, you got a chance. We've got the
receivers, we got the running back, we got the defensive line, you
know, we got the we gotspoon, we got we got we got
DB's, we got we got wegot the pieces, you know. So
we just got to just put itall together with the good coaching that this
Mike McDonald's hired. And so Ithink it's gonna be a big, big
year for us. See, man, you get everybody excited just like that.
(09:28):
Huh, get everybody excited just likethat. It's April, It's April
when we're already getting excited. Uh, love having you here, So go
get it, man, go getlisten. I appreciate you coming on.
I know you got a lot ofpeople asking to have you on, So
I appreciate coming on our show today. Thank you so much, and we'll
see you soon. All right, all right, take care guys. There
we go. That's a Chenna newwos who joining us here on the Beacon
pumping hotline. Love having him on. Really appreciate that. A big shout
(09:52):
out to the Seahawks as well.He did the podium yesterday, did all
that. But I said, Ireally want to get him on. I
want to get a veteran on aswell to try kind of just just Garrett,
go where were you know, getget this team's thoughts. You know,
a guy who's been around the leaguefor a while like him. What
does it mean? Where are they? We're in the midst of you know,
they're in the midst of their firstphase of off season workouts. But
(10:16):
they get a little bit extra time. They get an extra mini camp,
as Greg and I were talking about, because of the new the new coaching
staff, and and it's exciting.Man, this is an exciting, exciting
time because it's a breath of freshair. And I think what he said,
Pete Carroll is a legend. Inever ever, ever want to go
down a road of saying anything otherthan positive about Pete Carroll. But I
mentioned this to you guys when thechanges were made, when the McDonald news
(10:39):
conference happened, when and I talkedto some people in the organization that day,
and people that are fairly high upwere saying, you know what it
was, we should have maybe madethis change a while ago. But it's
hard because you have a guy thatwon a Super Bowl and went back to
a Super Bowl, and every singleyear, with really only one exception,
you are really in contention throughout theseason. You know, you were a
(11:01):
team that was always in the playoffhunt. You were a team that was
always competitive. Pete Carroll is whatChenna said, He's a legend. But
sometimes it's time to make a change. Sometimes it's time to make a move.
And you know, it's one ofthe things I kept thinking, you
know, heading into yesterday's baseball game, is it time for a new voice
with the Mariners. You know, what would have happened if they would have
lost yesterday I don't know, becausethere is a constant they start out slow
(11:24):
every single season the last few yearsunder Scott's service, and maybe sometimes you
just need a change. I'm notsaying fire him. I'm just saying I'm
wondering if that was going through theminds of many people at team, what
wile that matter? In the casethe Seahawks, they needed to make a
change. Like I think, Igo back and Jess I brought this up
a bunch of times, and Iknow that there was it was kind of
(11:46):
this really debated, weird you know, like there were people trying to spin
it one way and spin it otherways. But I think what we saw
in what I saw, what Iexperienced in Arizona, whether it was smoking
for the cigars for a child, whatever, it was just I think that
was just a symbolic of where thisorganization was. They seemed disjointed being the
(12:11):
message there, and then you gotthe veterans being angry about a celebration going
on when they know they're not well, not all veterans, and that was
I think that was I think thedisconnected was there. Yeah, I think
that was the weird thing is therewas a disconnect that just like the priority
for Seattle is never just to winyour last game, unless that last game
is your is a super Bowl, and that's only happened once in almost fifty
(12:31):
years. Forty eight years, weregoing on forty nine this year. But
like the yeah, the there wasI hate to say because I think I'm
not I'm not a player, soI couldn't speak to this. But and
it may be too strong, maybejust a lack of respect at the end
for Pete and the coaching staff toto have that type of thing going on
(12:52):
at the end of the season, and it was seen. I mentioned that,
you know, Burke Cold was thereand ultimately was Burton Jody who made
the decision to let Pete go.And I think, and you know,
good, bad and different. Ifyou ask people in important when they're not
big Burt Cold fans, he runsthe Blazers as well, kind of overseas
Vulcan sports. They hate him mostbecause basketball team's not been doing very well
(13:16):
right now. But I do knowthis, He's there all the time and
in a quiet way observing, andI'm sure there was part of him that
just said this is not acceptable. This is not who we are. You
know, Pete, you know,Mike Hongrin built this organization to a level
that had never been before, andthen with one little blip of one year
(13:37):
with the Mora mistake, they bringin a guy that takes it to a
whole different level in terms of consistencyand everything else and the whole you know,
we're going to compete. Well, was there really a lot of competition
going on where guys just playing grabass and getting through the season and collecting
a paycheck? And for the firsttime ever, it kind of felt that
way last season. There is noexcuses, he just said, China just
(13:58):
said it. You got talent onthat team. How the hell, How
in the world do you not havea better defense with that secondary, with
Bobby Wagner, with Jordan Brooks, with Draymond Jones, even if Chen is
out, like they just that wasnot who they should have been. I
completely agree, and I think it'swe look at guys that lost a locker
room, and you mentioned Jim Morathat was an obvious one. And I
(14:22):
don't think Pete necessarily lost the lockerroom. They lost their identity and that's
probably good way to put it.Yeah, No, he didn't lose it
in some no we disconnect with thisguy, but the locker room became disconnected
under Pete Carroll. If you rememberthe new the new coach for the San
Francisco forty nine ers, his name'sk J. Wright. He might have
(14:46):
heard of him now with the fortynine ers. Yes, it sounds dirty
and gross, but it's the caseeverywhere. It's not like I mean in
the heart. Yeah, it's likeit's not like Bobby didn't go to the
Rams, and SUREM didn't go tothe forty nine ers as well, but
yeah, yeah, just the factkJ is there. But I just think
I don't think that wasn't hurt thatmuch, to be honest, I was
just a kJ. We're all happythat he gets his shot. I don't
(15:07):
mind him coaching there. You know, I didn't like when I didn't like
seeing Sherman in a Niners uniform orBobby in a RAMS uniform. But those
ones hurt. But it's business, and it is and and I know,
like you know, Bruce and someother guys were critical of kJ going there,
like I'm never going there. Youknow, Luke Wilson has been that
way. I'm not going there. It's like, damn Luke. If they
would have offered you a big contractyou would have signed in a second,
like come on, but but thataside. kJ Wright. I remember last
(15:31):
year we talked about this on there. Remember we played his you know export
of filled rant from his podcast abouthow they've you know, this is not
how Seahawk football is. And thiswas before. This wasn't the after the
final game. This was right. In fact, I talked to him before
the Philadelphia game that Monday night. He's like, man, he goes,
you're in there, you see it, he says, you see it,
like like, that's not who weare. That's not the culture we built,
(15:54):
that's not what we established. Andhe was right, that is one
hundred percent correct. None of thatwas true. None of that was what
we had going on, what theyhad going on before. So I think,
well, you're right, you know, maybe just lost who they were
and what they were. That usedto be the most intimidating football team defensively
and in some ways offensively because ofthe way Marshawn ran and I think even
(16:17):
later Chris Carson like, they punishedyou on both sides of the football,
and over the last few years thathas not been the case. They have
nothing to we have to give himcredit. But he but but yeah,
but I'm not talking about passing it. I'm punish you. They punish you
like Marshawn punished you. Chris Carsonlater until he got hurt. He punished
(16:37):
you the way he ran the football, and that defense, that defense punished
you. It started to lose, obviously, when you lose guys like Cam
Chancellor and Cliff Averl and Michael Bennett. Yeah, you start to lose that
identity and who you are, andthe guys they replaced him with weren't the
same way. The guy we justtalked to can be that one of those
guys. And I just watching him, not just as a football player.
(17:02):
I think they just missed him.You look at how Taylor played, which
wasn't good, and he probably wasn'tin the right situation scheme wise. You
look at Boye. Mafe went onthis massive role and then kind of faded
a little bit, kind of feltand he kind of changed a little bit,
was a little bit different guy.I think a lot of that came
(17:22):
down to, frankly, what youjust said, losing who you are,
losing who your identity was. Andthat's why I asked him when he made
the quote yesterday, we got theplayers. I feel like we got the
right coaches. Now that's a playertelling you that I love Pete Carroll and
everything. They needed to make achange, and they did, and now
they can move forward and they startthe offseason. Programs all agree with Greg.
(17:44):
It feels as if they are lightyears away still from the forty nine
ers, at least in a couplespots line of scrimmage specifically, you know
what they were able to do withthe line of scrimmage compared to Seattle.
But listen, they just before theram just lost their best player. Aaron
Donald's the best player on that footballteam. And it doesn't matter what day
of the week it is, whatgame, it is. Aaron Donald's best
(18:06):
player in the football That they losthim, they lost a big part of
who their identity is, and soyou know, there's things change. So
hopefully this is the case with theseguys as well. We'll take a break,
come back, kind of reset theday. A little shout out to
the guy filled in yesterday as well. We'll do that when we come back.
Big show coming up as well. We'll set it up for you all
next on ninety three point three KJFMone, at least temporarily. I'm starting
(18:30):
the show at noon two. Westarted at noon today and that was when
we could get to Chenna Nuosu fromyour Seattle Seahawks on the air right internet,
and so we didn't want to messaround playing and open and make him
stand on hold. He's got itliterally carved out some time today for us,
and we greatly appreciate Seahawks PR andalso Chenna for coming on because that's
(18:52):
the guy we wanted to talk to. We want to talk to a veteran.
I talked to the PR guy saidI want to get a veteran on.
I want to find out what's goingon. They had Chenna, Bucket,
Gino, and Julian Love all upon the podium yesterday, so we
wanted to get somebody on the showtoday. We're gonna have a deeper conversation.
So we thank them for that.So we kind of start things a
little different normal than normal today hereon a Thursday edition of the program.
He internts with you big first ofall, before we get some of the
(19:18):
news, so things we need tohit on. First of all, Big
thanks to Chris Crawford who stepped inyesterday and all I heard was positive feedback
for one half of the molliwop guys. Hmm. Interesting. He literally thought
I was hiding mean text from himbecause of everything that was so positive on
the text, all on the textline. Yeah. Yeah. Well the
thing is, you can't really hidethem unless you block him. Yeah,
(19:40):
unless you just blocked the guy.So yeah, no, there's no way
to hide those. So no,I hey, you know what I I've
We've had Chris On for four yearsnow, the Chris and Nate both together,
and there's been five times we justhad Chris On by himself talking about
prospects and trades and things like that. That's kind of right in his wheelhouse
with what he does with NBC Sportsand Retal World and everything. But I'm
(20:00):
glad he came in. I knowhow how much funny he had. I
talked to him late last night andjust a thank you to him because I
had some stuff going on. I'lltouch it on that in the next segment
a little bit, but it wasit was great to have him come in,
step in have some fun. Italk to Steve Polozzolo go through a
bunch of things in that regard,so big thanks to him and and lo
and behold while he's on the show. Yesterday, the Mariners find a way
(20:22):
to pick up a victory over theToronto Blue Jays to salvage to salvage the
road trip at two and four, but not get swept by Toronto, which
would have been really not fun,not good at all. I don't know
where we would have been if theywould have. I don't think I don't
think there would have been a managerialchange, but I think that would have
(20:42):
been a topic of conversation. Andthat's why I said in the first segment,
Bro briefly, one game can meaneverything. One game can can change
a lot. I know it's onesixty two guys, but one game,
like how would you be feeling today? Just to ask this question, how
would you be feeling today? Ifthis team would have come back and got
(21:04):
swept in their final series, wrotethe losing streak extended all those things like
how would you have felt? Notgood would be the answer, And there
would be absolutely at that point,no possible way, and I mean no
possible way to spin it positive. There just wouldn't be. So this was
(21:25):
a big win these guys had yesterday. Make no mistake about that. It
was a significant win, if notsymbolic, but it was significant and they
got that done and it's awesome whiletheir backs were against the wall too.
I'd just like to, you know, talk about that with what Munios did
and that when Ryan Stanna came infor that bottom of the tenth. Yeah,
they did it with the backs againstthe wall, which they have been
(21:47):
in those situations so far in thisvery short season. Yea. And Munos
has bounced back his last two appearances, right, which is good to see.
And you know, and cal Rawly, as I mentioned in the cross
talk with Greg got imagine if heplayed eighty one games in Roger Center,
I mean, only smokes man,if he insane talus that was gonna go
out or not. Just the wayit came off though, But it was
(22:07):
against the Blue Jays. You knewit was going to go out. You
knew it was going to go out. You knew there was no chance.
And Logan Gilbert spins a beauty andthat's good. That wasn't wasted, So
good for them. They started getta series of the Cubs coming up tomorrow,
a home stand with as well.So just a monster, monster,
big win. I know it's justthe one, but it's just there are
certain games that just feel like itmatters more. And they got that.
(22:32):
They didn't waste the effort. Theyscore six plus runs for the first time
all season, but it takes extrainnings. I'm not gonna worry about that
right now. We'll we'll talk somemore about that tomorrow. Oh my god,
Rory, Oh lord, sorry,I was distracted. Well, it
is. It's a tradition. RoryMcElroy. Is he's even par it man,
(22:52):
is he's struggling off the tea today. What the hell? I'm reliving
my nightmare from yesterday when I played. So that's that's a We all have
those, and it's like, yeah, I can hook it just as well
as anybody that looks like my Tshirt on nine yesterday drew. It's okay,
but that was the one on issue. Let me run down the show
real quick. Greg Cosell will joinus coming up at the top of the
out one o'clock. Our weekly visitbrought to you by Seattle Sider. Big
(23:15):
thanks to Greg for coming on aswe go through the draft, get you
ready for the draft, all thingsNFL Draft. Today, we're going to
talk linebackers, and I guess Ialways I guess with Seattle. Need now
to just kind of preface this. There are guys that are listed as linebackers
on the roster, but they're justedge rushers or edge guys or edge players
as they call them now. Nwosu'sone Darryl Taylor, boy A, Mafe
(23:40):
Hall, guys like that. We'retalking linebackers. I e. Think Wagner
Brooks no longer here, kJ etcetera. We're talking linebackers in the draft.
I will ask them about what Seattlepicked up, because I don't think
we've had a chance. To thebest of my knowledge, we haven't had
a chance to talk to Gray aboutSeattle's new linebackers, Tyrrel Dotson and Jerome
(24:04):
Baker. I don't believe that youwould consider I don't believe you would consider
Dotson necessarily a guy that's going tocome in and start right away. I
think he's more of a depth guy. Probably feels a little bit more like
like Devin Bush from last year, like kind of an insurance policy. Maybe
(24:26):
not a guy you're expecting to play, you know, start seventeen games for
you. Jerome Baker might be alittle bit different. We'll talk to him
about that, like what is thetrue need for Seattle based on Dotson and
Baker, And really after that itdrops off John Radagan, Drake Thomas,
Patrick O'Connell, the other linebackers onthe roster right now. And you're saying
to yourself, who, yeah, that's why it's in need. So Radigan's
been around for a while, goodspecial teams player, O'Connell we saw a
(24:48):
little bit doesn't appear to be aguy that's gonna I mean, good story,
small school guy all that. That'sfine, but they need help at
linebacker. And when we mean linebacker, stack linebackers, Wagner Brooks, those
types of guys. So we'll checkin with him and kind of go through
a list of the top and Iwent through it earlier today. There might
only be one linebacker. If you'rethinking about worre Seattle might be thinking to
(25:11):
pick a linebacker. There might beonly one or two guys in that off
the ball stack box linebacker situation thatwould maybe merit a first round pick,
and I'm not sure if any ofthem would be number sixteen. Overall.
The challenge that John Schneider is goingto have what will he do, what
(25:33):
will he do to supplement the draftin terms of Day two. One pick
on Day two just doesn't feel likeit's enough. But you gotta have a
dance partner. And I know weall assume, you know, nine out
of twelve years they've traded down, done all that. You have to still
find somebody to do it with you, right, you have to find somebody
that wants to do it with you. So we'll talk to Greg Cosel about
(25:55):
the linebacker's coming up today at atone o'clock, two o'clock, we're gonna
head to Portland. I don't knowif you guys saw the story Damie Martinez,
who's one. I'm sure we've seenit by now. Like I go
away one day and I'm assuming thatyou guys just tuned out of sports.
No, you had Chris on yesterday, did great job. You had the
Feane do in the afternoon show andeverything like that. No, we're here,
Yeah, you guys are all here. The situation with Damien Martinez,
(26:19):
who's a two time eleven hundred yardrusher for the Oregon State Beavers. I
would say probably a top at worsta top five, maybe a top three
running back returning to college football onthe nation next year. Had pledged his
allegiance, his loyalty to the Beaversof Oregon State, even with a Mountain
West Conference schedule, had a reallynice nil deal apparently from the collective down
(26:41):
there in Corvallis with the Oregon StateBeavers. And he is in the portal
and there was a story that he'supset because he didn't feel like he was
getting paid what he needed to getpaid. What have you. We'll head
to Portland. Brandon Sprague's gonna joinus. Oregon State alum does the morning
show down there for ten day thefan. He'll join us at two o'clock
every day. I think, well, yeah, we've reached a new I
(27:03):
don't know if I want to callit a low, but we've reached a
new a new a new a newyeah, a new era, a new
point in college football, college sports, not just college football, college athletics.
And this feels like another one.A guy that is calling his old
coach a snake, Jonathan Smith whenhe bailed and dropped his stuff off a
good will, A guy that wasas loyal as can be and now he's
(27:26):
out. Why we'll find out howbroken college football really is. Maybe a
lot of people don't think it's broken. I get that, but there's something
inherently wrong, like you don't justchange your tune that quick. There's something
broken there. And we'll talk toBrandon about that coming up at about two
o'clock today. All right, takea break, come back. I'll kind
of fill you in on yesterday.I was inspired. I was inspired yesterday.
(27:48):
It's really funnit to hear that. It's really it was a you know,
I think we all need a littleinspiration in our life sometimes, and
I was definitely inspired yesterday. Itwas really cool to see. Uh,
if you're a parent, specifically ofa middle school and a high school kid,
join We'll stick around. We'll telltlestory coming up next. Now back
(28:11):
to the Infranest show brought to youby Snow call Me Casino, Great Cosell
coming up at one o'clock today.Moments ago, there was a statement issued.
I'm going to get to the goodstuff in a second. We get
this out of the way. Amoment ago statement issue from the Alabama Football
(28:33):
Athletics Communications Office from Kaitlin de Bor, and I think we all know why,
Calein de Bor says while I'm notable to comment specifically on the situation
involving an individual at my former institutionbecause of federal privacy laws and the ongoing
criminal matters. I do want tomake it clear that I take any allegations
of sexual misconduct very seriously. Ialways have and always will follow established institutional
(29:00):
policies and procedures to ensure prompt reportingand proper handling of allegations by the appropriate
authorities. So I don't want toget into this story until more information comes
out. And it's not because we'rethe Husky Station. I just don't want
(29:22):
to get in the story because we'retalking about two alleged rapes of two young
women in our community and we're asports show. The only comment I would
have on Divor's comment is, boy, that's a guy passing the buck.
I will do everything. All Iheard was institution institution. I will follow
establish institutional policies and procedures to ensureprompt reporting and proper handling of allegations by
(29:45):
the appropriate authorities. That means someoneelse wrote it for him, probably well
for the one hundred percent, Butmore importantly, what it means is that
I just did what I was toldby Upper Campus. That's what that was.
Or I was told I could dowhat I wanted to or how I
wanted to do it by Upper Campus. This story is in its infancy.
By the way, Frankie Thompson's ourreport of Fox thirteen, She's wanted to
(30:07):
just send it to me. TheTroy Dannen had no comment again today.
So the bigger, the bigger issueis the allegations the police. I read
all I think it was thirteen pagepolice report the other night and another six
pages from the detectives for Seattle PoliceDepartments for the probable cause AFFI David,
(30:33):
it's gross, it's disgusting. It'ssomething that I don't care what the person
is, student, athlete, employee. You're a coworker. You read that.
You got a hard time believing thatsomething really bad didn't happen at the
hands of this individual. It's notone like I'm always cognizant of the Duke
(30:55):
Lacrosse. I just thow it's weird. As like, two days before this
story, I saw I was watchinga documentary on the Ducal cross story.
Again, those kids got screwed, they absolutely did. They got but it
was one individual. This is twoseparate women, two separate circumstances a few
weeks apart. But reading through thepolice report, my goodness, everything about
(31:19):
it. The two situations were crazysimilar. And we'll see how this whole
thing plays out. But boy, there's a lot of point passing the bock
pointing here and there and everything else. I just hope the two young women
can can at some point be okay. I don't know how you could be
okay. If indeed all those allegationsproved to be true, it's disgusting and
(31:44):
it's sick. And if people didput them back on the field knowing that
that happened, then I think, boy, that's just that is. You
shouldn't be in a position of authority, shouldn't be in a position of any
type of leadership. So believe itat that okay, speaking of a better
thing, former leadership. Big thanksto Chris anders Jess for filling in for
(32:07):
me yesterday. I appreciate we getone day a year courtesy of iHeartMedia.
I make it sound like it's nota big deal. It's actually one of
the better things for our company.I like it they give us a day
year, and I think a lotof people don't use it. I always
utilize that. Yeah, and it'syou go into your work day and it
says it might be spirit day, they call it, I think, but
(32:27):
it's basically a day that you cantake off paid day off to go do
something in the community. I jokewith Softy the day I'm picking up trash
on the on the side of theroad. Now, I'll only do that
if I get in trouble. No, this was my good friend. So
Steve Murphy is a teacher down atEdoclaw High School and he has a teaches
a number of different things including sportsmarketing class. And it's awesome, like
(32:51):
he does an incredible Murph does anincredible job. And this is the second
time he's done it three times, the second time I've been able to go
down. And they do a thingcalled the Shark Tank Present and these the
students in his class, they'd teamup, you know, pair teams of
two and they they basically developed theirown sports franchise and it's it's I mean,
it's incredible from the ground up,including maybe building a building, what
(33:15):
it would take, the money, promotions, ticket prices, marketing ideas,
promotional ideas, and then they wantus to vote on it. There's like
eight of us there six of usthere that were kind of the sharks to
invest and we vote on who thekids were that were And we saw twelve
presentations yesterday and I'm going to saylike eleven out of twelve were unbelievable,
(33:37):
and even the twelfth one was therewas work put into it. It just
the presentation wasn't great. But Icame away thinking, this, man,
we got some smart kids out there. Boy, we got some good young
people out there. There were someideas in some of the presentations that were
so crazy out of the box,but also like, wow, that's what
we need in sports. We needpeople to think out of the box.
(33:58):
I'll give you one. This wasout of the This is really cool and
this is actually a good question toask people at four nine, four to
five one. Also on the Telemortotext on went game Time and you can
send me in a voice text aswell. Baseball is one of the most
traditional sports there is, right,Like, there's just traditions in it.
One of those is a seventh inningstretch and they play take me out to
the ballgame. The idea that theseguys had they wanted to have a major
(34:22):
League baseball franchise in New Orleans, and I think it's called the Jesters,
was the name of the team. And one of the ideas they had was
instead of playing take me out tothe ball game in the seventh inning stretch,
they would have local jazz musicians, because that's what it is, play
something instead, And just kind ofthe way they developed it, I'm like,
it would never happen. A They'reprobably never gonna get a baseball team
(34:44):
in New Orleans be you know, but jazz as New Orleans. But what
it was cool was what a greattradition or what a great idea out of
the box. And I would challengeyou guys today, give me an idea
out of the box in sports. You'd like to see something change, something
different, you know, whatever itmight be. Because I, for a
life of me, I sat there, I looked at the guys next to
(35:04):
me. I don't know if it'sa great idea, but it's such a
crazy out of the box idea thatit makes sense. Like it was awesome.
I think it would fly in NewOrleans. To be honest, Yeah,
I don't know what would work here. Part of it is you look
around, like listen, bobblehead giveaways. Everyone does that. You know,
the big battle here was what dowe play? You know, is it's
(35:25):
you know Louis Louis or we playMaclamore? What traditions? What? What's
something maybe that is taking place you'dwant to see changed in sports for your
team locally in a sport? Whathave you? Give me your thoughts?
Four nine, four to five onand we'll read you visit this coming up
at one thirty as well today. But yeah, big thanks. Shout out
to Murph and the kids at EnumclawHigh School. What a great school,
(35:47):
great people, and inspiring day foryours true yesterday. Thanks Chris and everybody
else for filling them. We'll takea break. Come back, linebackers on
the agenda. You want to talklinebackers? One guy? What does the

time for Ian's weekly visit with NFLFilms Greg Cosel, brought to you by
Two Beers and Seattle Cider Company. On your home for the twelfth Man and
the NFL Sports Radio ninety three pointthree KJR FM. All right, here
we go, man, just twoweeks away from the NFL Draft, two
(37:42):
weeks in counting. We'll be sittingtwo weeks from to day at the Virginia
Mason Athletics Center that afternoon, gettingready for three days of NFL drafts.
All the heavy lifting will be done. It's just a matter of what happens
at that point in time. Andspeaking of heavy lifting, the guy that
does it for us join us rightnow on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Our
good friend Greg co Sal love haveESPN matchup show, love having Greg Gun
(38:02):
and of course he is a guythat we love checking in with as far
as the draft is concerned. Sir, how are you today, Ian?
I'm doing awesome. I feel likeI'm a little behind this year. I
think I've only seen about one hundredand twenty guys in detail. What's normal
for you? I guess. Idon't know if anybody would use the word
normal when describing me, and whenit comes to I don't think they would.
(38:24):
We're going to talk linebackers today becauseas everyone listening knows and as Greg
knows very well too. The SeattleSeahawks lost their two starting linebackers from a
year ago. Jordan Brooks is onto Miami and Bobby Wagner's on to the
Washington Commanders to play for Dan Quinn. That means they have to replace their
linebackers. And when we define linebackersfor Seattle, Greg, it's a little
(38:46):
different, right. It's they haveguys listened on their rosters, linebackers Chenanuosu
and Boye Mafe and those sorts. They're on the line of scrimmage. We're
talking about the guys the inside linebackers. I guess would be the best way
to describe it the way we justtalk about it would be actor off the
ball, the stack linebackers, offthe ball linebackers. Interesting to see how
to loses a guy to the Dolphinsand they get a guy from the Dolphins.
(39:07):
It's almost like a trade off.Jerome Baker tell us about him.
Yeah, Baker's a little different. He isn't off the ball linebacker by trade,
and that's what he will line up. But he's an athletic guy.
So when he played in Miami, there were times he lined up on the
line of scrimmage. It all dependson your defensive philosophy because when you go
back a few years, not thispast year in Miami when Vic Fangio was
(39:30):
there, but in prior years whenBrian Flores was there, and I think
Josh Boyer may have been the coordinator. They did a lot of pressure and
he lined up on the ball alot and he blitzed at times. So
he's a very athletic kid who ismulti dimensional in the way he can be
deployed within the context of the defense. But at his core, you know,
when they line up in their basedefense, he will be an off
(39:52):
the ball linebacker. But he's anathletic kid. What about Tyrell Dobson.
Tyrel Dotson is more of your oldschool stacked off the ball backer. He's
a box linebacker, a good size, physical in the box, can navigate
well in there. Not really anathletic kid like you would not play him
in your sub in your sub defenses. Uh yeah, I mean because he
(40:14):
replaced who was it that got hurtfor bu. He replaced the guy that
the kid that got hurt, well, Matt Milano got hurt last year.
He's not not Matt Milano obviously, who's one of the three or four best
all around linebackers in the league. But Dotson is as I said, he's
he's a different kind of player.He's in today's NFL, he'd be a
base defense player because he just doesn'thave the athleticism, the movement, the
(40:37):
range to really play in your subpackages. He's not really a coverage player.
But he's a thumper, you know, if you're playing your base defense,
that's what he is. Greg Coshillbrought you by Seattle Sider. Listen,
if you need to swing by histwo Woods, you should swing by
two Woods Tasting Room. Check outSeattle Sider Seattlesider. Down there between East
(40:57):
Margin Away and First Avenue South, you can find a little grocery stores Vivid.
Their new light sid are great forthis time of the year, lighter
and calories, an alcohol fantastic tasteas well. It is Seattle Cider.
Okay, before we get to someof the linebackers in the draft, Greg,
and you know, if we talkedabout Baker and Dodson, I guess
probably important for us to kind ofget a feel for like we did last
week. We did this last weekwith the interior defensive lineman Mike McDonald.
(41:21):
Based on what you saw with theBaltimore Ravens defense, how does he utilize
the linebackers? Is it going tobe maybe, like we're talking about two
guys playing that position for Seattle lastyear. It's a little different world now.
So even when I bring up Uosuand those guys, it's maybe it's
different how they're alive. It's goingto be because he's not a five to
two for front guy unless he changesbased on the personnel that has And that's
(41:42):
something we don't know as you andI speak in mid April, we don't
know exactly how he will feel thathe can best deploy his personnel. You
know, basically when he was withthe Ravens last year, you know,
his base front was four down.So we'll see how long that plays out
in Seattle. Because we know certainlythat Mafe lined up on the ball.
(42:07):
Uh, you know, will willhe be seen as a defensive end,
Will he be seen as a linebacker? Maybe he's going to be an off
the ball linebacker and that you know, who knows? We don't know that,
And that's why this is so interesting. This is the kind of stuff
I love in the offseason, particularlywhen coaches move and where they're going.
The previous year, the team playeddifferently than than that guy played, you
(42:30):
know, when he was the coordinator. So we don't know that, but
you know, we know that Seattle'sbase front a year ago under Clint Hurt
was five to two. They playedwith you know, five across, and
I don't anticipate that we'll see muchof that from Mike McDonald, to be
honest with you. Yeah, andI think they've got they just started OTAs
and their offseason program phase one. We'll probably get a chance. Usually we
(42:53):
get a chance to go out twoor three times during mini camps and OTAs
when they'd make media available ability andlet us go out there. Even then,
I'm not sure how much we cansay, although all whisper in your
ear is what I hear, whatI see, Greg, And yeah,
you know you might see because theyare going to even though they're just walking
through things. You know, they'llline up in the way he wants them
to line up. Yeah, I'llbe curious to see Maffey and Oosu,
(43:15):
those types of guys where they endup. They brought back obviously Darryl Taylor
as well, all right, Let'stalk about the draft eligible linebackers guys that
we're looking at the draft. Thatis certainly a position of need as you
just articulated with, you know,Baker Dotson coming in, but they need
they need some help there. Let'sstart with Peyton Wilson, North Carolina State.
People are high on him. Yeah, Peyton Wilson's a fun guy to
(43:35):
watch because he's a little different. He's over sixty four. He's two hundred
and thirty four pounds, so he'skind of thin for being over six to
four. He had an unbelievable combineand I'm not just talking about the measurables.
I'm talking about the drills. AndI got to meet Peyton Wilson at
the Maxwell Club dinner in Atlanta thisyear because he was the winner for the
Defensive Player of the Year in collegefootball. Really impressive kid, super impressive
(43:59):
kid. He's a heighth week weightspeed guy because, as I said,
over six four, he ran afour to four to three. But he
plays fast. He's a run andchase kind of player more than just a
pure physical player. Despite being big. You know, he's tall more than
mass. You know, there's notdensity to him in fact, you see
(44:20):
him in a just normal close asI did, and he almost looks he
looks thin almost. But so he'sa run and chase player. He maximizes
his play speed and range. He'shad a really good instinctive feel for keeping
himself clean, navigating the box tofind the ball, make tackles. When
he played at NC State, therewere times he even played deep safety,
(44:44):
post safety. He's just a really, really good athlete. Now that won't
happen, as you know, inthe NFL. I spoke with him and
he said that every team he hadspoken to sees him as a stacked backer,
which is where he will start liningup in the league, as a
stacked off the b a linebacker. He's he's a really interesting prospect just because
he's his His body dimensions are alittle bit different, you know, than
(45:08):
than normal. But uh, andhe's a great kid that's scream Seahawks in
a lot of the ways. Thatdoesn't fit into a normal box to sort
of a body type. They lovethose types of guys. As you're describing
him, I'll get off him realquick and get to other guys. But
I just as you're describing the bodytype and the thing that jumped out of
me was was that body type? And I saw his measurables is he's maybe
an inch shorter, but is therea kJ Wright traits to him. He's
(45:32):
not as as in terms of density, body type mass, He's not like
that. Okay, so yeah,I wouldn't say that, but so it's
not quite like that. But he'she's he almost looks lean, you know.
That's the thing. And like Isaid, when I saw him in
person, it really jumped out tome. I mean, he looked really
(45:55):
lean. So I mean, you'retalking about a guy that ran a four
four or three a one point fivefour ten yard split, which is a
wide receiver split. You know, did really really well and in all the
athletic testing measurables, he's a veryvery good athlete and he plays fast.
Drin Cooper Texas A and M linebacker. This guy is the most explosive off
(46:17):
the ball linebacker in the draft. This guy is just a bundle of explosion.
Probably not at his best when youthink about you know the phrase that's
used key and diagnose, that's he'sa see it, get it player.
He goes from zero to sixty ina heartbeat and he's a really good blitzer.
I mean he's got elite accelerating speedoff the edge. But this guy
(46:42):
has sudden explosive movement, instant acceleration, elite closing burst and speed. He's
long, lean, an unbelievable athleticprofile. This kid's really an interesting player.
My guess is he'll have to betaught a little bit about you know,
reading thing, seeing things, whathis keys are, you know,
theoretically all that can be taught. Some guys get it. Some guys don't.
(47:06):
You know, there's no way Icould possibly know the answer to that.
When teams, you know, bringhim in for the thirty visits and
then or go to a pro day, they find out more of those things
that I'm able to find out.But that's where he'll have to get better.
But if you want to just talkabout explosive stack backers, that's this
guy great cosal Joinny has curtsy,a seattlesider. Let's let's talk about I
(47:29):
guess we can stay with the sameschool, go back to back with a
couple of Michigan linebackers, Junior Colsonand Michael Barrett. Yeah, Junior Coulson
is he's a good prospect. He'sjust to me, a really, really
solid player. He's six two twothirty eight. You know, moves well.
(47:50):
You know, I wouldn't say thathe's explosive. I don't know if
he plays with a quick trigger orsudden burst, but he just reacts efficiently
to what he sees. He makesmost of his accles as a kind of
a scrape and flow linebacker behind thefirst level of the defense. He's not
really an impact player. He's muchmore of a read and react player.
(48:10):
He's going to be a good playerIan, but he's more along the lines
for people in Seattle who follow theleague more so than just the Seahawks,
He's like a Jordan Hicks or JermainePratt, as I hear Franklin. Just
really good players who are not necessarilyspecial, impactful players. What about Michael
Barrett, I don't know. Ithink I have a little romance with Michael
(48:36):
Barrett. I really like this game. And again, he doesn't check the
boxes, so he may not makeit. I mean, I could be
dead Wrongie and believe, because you'redealing with a guy that's five eleven and
three quarters or three eighths two hundredand thirty three pounds. Okay, now,
this kid was a record setting quarterbackin high school in the state of
Georgia. You watch his tape now, I mean he's got an instinctive feel
(49:00):
for the position, really strong, key and diagnosed. He sees things well,
dynamic, shurt area of quickness, finds the ball, highly competitive,
physical. Obviously there were plays becauseof a size where he does get swallowed
up in the run game. That'sgoing to happen. I'm not making a
direct comparison, but when I waswatching him, I said to myself,
(49:22):
what are his athletic testing measurables ascompared to Nick Bolton, who was also
under six feet And they're very, very similar, And in fact, some
of Barrett's athletic testing measurables exceeded Boltons. So again, I don't want people
to think he's that I'm saying he'sNick Bolton, because I don't. You
know, none of us know that. But I really liked Michael Barrett's tape
(49:44):
and it would not surprise me ifsomewhere along the line he ends up as
a starting linebacker in this league. It's interesting. We've been doing this for
a long time, and when Imentioned his name and you kind of you
know, you said the romance, but like the there's something there are some
intangibles that you see on tape thatthere are some things that really jump out
at you with this kid. That'sthe impress line. Yeah, yeah,
(50:07):
and again maybe I'll be wrong.Hey, it wouldn't be the first time.
You know, I'm not one ofthose guys. And as you know
that, hey, I'm right oneverything, and I you know, you
never know. There's so many variables. And I try to explain this when
I do any number of shows thatI do, and of course people want
it all to be you know, black and white, you know, a
mathematical equation. It never is.There's just too many variables involved with the
(50:28):
evaluation of the player. Where hegoes, how he's coached, how he's
deployed, what's around him. Imean, there's just too many things to
make a definitive judgment. Because thebottom line is there's really very, very
very few transcendent players in any draft, if any where you pretty much say
that guy's going to be great, you know, So now you get into
guys like this that I guarantee becausehe does not check the boxes. There'll
(50:52):
be some teams that he's not evenon the draft board because he's under six
feet and teams have critical factors,as you know, and they may have
a critical factor that any linebacker undersix feet he's not even on our draft
board. Well, listen, I'mchecking my notes. I'm not sure the
last time I found out that youwere wrong, So I stop it.
I believe I get told that allthe time on Twitter with a few choice
(51:14):
words every once in a while too. Yeah, I'm gonna quick pro advice
for you that some just ignore ignorethat way I do. I never,
I never, I never respond.I'll check with Hugh Millen and see if
you've ever been wrong. I bethe'll say no too, So we'll check
with you. I actually had agood talk with you last night about Michael
Pennings and Roman Dude Day, sohe will he will point it out if
that's the case. Here's a familiarname, Jeremiah Trotter, junior from Clemson.
(51:38):
Yeah, another player. I reallyliked his tape a lot. I
know his dad a little bit.I remember years ago when he had just
retired. He was living actually inMount Laurel, New Jersey, which is
where NFL films is, and hecame in and watched tape with me,
so I you know, I gotto know his dad a little bit who
was a really good player in Philly, the son Jeremiah. He's six feet
(52:00):
two twenty eight, which again doesnot check all the boxes for a lot
of people, and you wouldn't callhim explosive, but I gotta tell you
he compensates for the lack of size, lanth and true explosiveness with those so
called deficiencies, he compensates for themwith really high level football intelligence. Understands
(52:21):
where to be really smart when itcomes to key and diagnose. He's got
great balance and body control. Hecan contort his body around people in the
box. He's a really good blitzer. I just think that this guy makes
plays in all phases of the game. He was to me. I almost
could make the argument that his tapewas the best of any linebacker in the
(52:45):
draft class. Now that doesn't meanI think he's going to be the best
linebacker and you know, but histape was really good. He was a
fun guy to watch. Uh whatis the boll? I guess ideally,
because now we've talked about a coupleof linebackers that are shorter than than they
want, a guy that's maybe tallerand leaner than they want. What are
we looking for a linebacker? Imean, has NFL teams told you that?
(53:07):
People told you, like, hey, six two to six three,
six' one to six three? Whatthe what the range is? Just height
wise? Well, I think sixfeet would be kind of the the the
critical point. I think if you'reunder that, it's you'd have to be
really special on tape and in allother areas, you know. I think
(53:28):
in an ideal world, you'd likea linebacker to be probably six to one
or more. You know, Iwould say you're probably looking six to one
to six two two thirty five ish. That would be my sense that that
would most people would like that tobe the case. Does that mean you
can not play if you're not that? Of course not, we know that.
But the other thing you don't wantto get into, and this was
(53:50):
an old Bill Parcelles thing, andI'm sure you're very familiar with it.
You don't want to get caught draftingtoo many exceptions. Every once in a
while, you're going to love aguy, and you know what, you
draft them, and you love it. Man, You just you live with
it and he maybe turns out tobe great, maybe he doesn't. You
live with it, but you can'tmake a living drafting exceptions to your critical
traits and your critical factors profile becauseyou're gonna end up with a team of
(54:12):
exceptions and you're gonna have a problem. And it's a good way to look
at it. Great co Selt joiningus and we get a couple two or
three more guys before let you go. Towny Eichenberg, Ohio State. Yeah.
Now, he's he made a lotof plays in college. I just
don't know if he has enough interms of overall sort of movement, overall
athleticism. But he's another one ofthose guys you know who sees it well,
(54:35):
reacts to it well. But whenI watch him, I just come
away thinking that I'm just I'm notsure. I'm just not sure if that
can happen at the NFL level, because he may just not be the level
of athlete needed to play off theball stacked linebacker in a base defense in
the league. There's really no suddennessto him. But he sees it well.
(54:57):
He shot gaps because he saw itwell. He was efficient with his
movement. I mean, there's thingsto clearly like and he's six two and
three eighth two thirty three, soit's not you know, he fits really
well into the size and length category. You know, he does a lot
of things well. The big questionwith him is is he athletic enough to
(55:20):
to really play and be solid? And maybe he is. He could be
just one of those guys that seesit really well and can make plays,
but he'll he will be below thelevel of athleticism that you ideally want.
No homework guys. Cedric Gray fromNorth Carolina, Yeah, he's This guy
has made so many tackles in hiscareer it's absurd. I mean he's a
(55:45):
three year starter, thirty seven gamesstart. In those three years, I
think he had ninety nine tackles, the one hundred and forty five tackles and
one hundred and twenty one tackles. This guy just makes plays. He's really
well built, but yet he's sleekerlooked. Just the way he's built.
He's got great length, long arms. There's a rangy feel to his movement.
(56:06):
He can play sideline to sideline. He's so controlled and how he moves
in the box and how he seesthings and he scrapes and he flows and
he tracks. He just has aninnate feel for seeing it. He never
looks as if he's not controlled inhis movement. He just he's a really
comfortable player to watch. I wouldexpect this guy to be a good pro
(56:30):
if I had to make a choice, Because some could say there are similarities
between he and Colson. My initialthought would be that I like Gray Moore,
but they're probably in the same rangeof how they'd be deployed. But
I think Gray gives you more insub defenses, and I think I think
in terms of those two guys withColson and Great Colson is a guy just
(56:50):
a name jumps out. People knowmore Michigan's on the Michigan under there's more
name recognition. Yeah, a lotof fans would say that along the way.
Final guy, I know you.I think he kind of like this
guy Drome Jail and Forward from Texas. Yeah. I don't know if I
love this guy, but he's abig kid. He's over too forty,
he's I watched a ton of Texas. They have a lot of guys,
(57:10):
And to be honest with you,I kept going back and forth on him
because he he's not a great athlete, like you wouldn't say he's a higher
level athlete, but he's sixty.You wouldn't say he's rangy, but there's
clear snaps. And as I said, I watched a lot of being a
(57:30):
strong stackbacker who could keen and diagnosewith the needed clarity and reaction speed and
flow to the football or shoot gaps. Sometimes he was slow doing that,
sometimes he was great doing that. There's a player he kind of reminded me
of, and this player took ayear or so, I think to become
really good. Maybe I'm trying toremember, but it's for the New England
(57:53):
Patriots, and I know they're onthe other side of the country from Seattle
fans, so I don't know.But there's a linebacker for the Patriots named
Juan Bentley who came out of Purduein twenty eighteen. It's a fifth round
pick and he actually became a starterout of his rookie training camp. He
kind of reminded me of Bentley, and Bentley's become kind of an important player
from New England and he kind ofyou know, ford Is I'm being honest.
(58:20):
I would need you know, ifI worked for a team, I'd
be able to do a lot moreresearch on Ford. I kept going back
and forth. There were times Ithought, Okay, this guy could be
a starting stack linebacker, and othertimes I thought, nah, I don't
see it. So I'm just I'mstruggling with him a little bit. I
think that's the definition of a guythat's going to be a Day three pick
(58:42):
that teams are going to look at, right. I mean, that's why
he will be a Day three pick, because he's just not quite the athletic
measurables are not there to be aDay two pick. Now. Yeah,
I'm just just looking at the listand it's hard to tell. I mean
everyone's it's the lying season, butit doesn't feel like there's a lot of
I mean, this is the listwe went through, you know, day
one picks. I'm not sure ifthere's a guy in there that fits.
I mean everyone wants you tell aguy who might, if teams feel really
(59:04):
good, would be Cooper because theexplosive element that he brings and he's a
very very dynamic blitzer. Well he'sonly seen north of one hundred and thirty
players so far, so he's wellbehind. What he needs to see is
you can hear the breakdowns of eachof these guys. We just he just
riffed off like that. Just yeah. I don't know how what your definition
of behind is, sir, Butwe'll see how behind you are next week
(59:27):
when we get you ready with aweek to go for the draft. How's
that I'll be I'll see more guysby then too, So I love it.
Great co sel brought to you byour friends at Seattle Sider. Looked
for in the local grocery stores, especially the new Vivid brand lighter and alcohol
certainly not in taste, fantastic tastes, also lighter in calories for this time
of the year. It's our friendsat Seattle Sider. Greg. Thank you.
We'll talk to you in seven daystime. Thanks, Ian, appreciate
(59:50):
it. That's great. Coselle moreto come. Ninety three point three KJRFM.
Now back to the Infnest Show, brought to you by Snow Call Me
You Go. Tiger Woods update sinceour report there a moment ago from Westwood
one, Tiger Woods did indeed berdiethe first hole of the day, second
(01:00:12):
T shot on number his second Tshirt the day, a T shirt on
two hooked it left. Although Ithink it's more win. Man, it
is windy as hell at Augusta, and it went and it literally settled up
next to a tree and in therough in the pine straw. If he
would have been left handed, noproblem. He's not. So he had
(01:00:36):
to hit a ball with his clubturned inside out left handed, put it
out in the fairway and scrambled tomake a par And he just piped a
drive on number three. He's kindof got it going on today early on.
Good sign for Tiger. Yeah,he's probably not going to finish his
round. I don't think what isit, four point thirty five there,
he's on three. Probably won't finishtoday because they a little lay with weather
(01:01:00):
this morning. But yeah, man, he looks, he looks. Okay,
the wind is brutal there, man, the balls flying everywhere, patrons
getting nailed, Holy smoke. Okay, we got Mike Bennon coming up,
Daily power Play cracking. Final homegame of the year is tonight seven o'clock,
dropping the puck six thirty pre gamewith the Captain. He'll join me
in studio for a Daily power Playlive in person in a minute. So
(01:01:23):
that's coming up in a second.I want to go back to something with
Chenna Nwosu that we had at noon. If you missed it, we had
Chenna Nuosu on Seawk defensive end linebackerEd Rusher. Call him what you want,
good player. I'll just call himthat good player. Number ten in
your program, under one in yourheart. Oh, Scotty Scheffler, God,
you're good. Holy smokes, myGod. Chipping in from the bunker.
Oh Lord, Okay, I'm sorry. I'm gonna be distracted the next
(01:01:43):
two days. You get the Masters. It's a tradition. I'm like anything
it is. You guys, justbear with me. I'm gonna be very,
very distracted. Chenna, of course, missed most of the season.
Got heard October twenty second against Arizona. Torus Pectoral told us earlier he's pretty
much healthy. Not maybe one hundredpercent hell, but he's pretty healthy,
ready to go. I did askhim about the comments I saw. Greg
(01:02:05):
Bell wrote the story in the NewsTribune Condota had at the times. They
were at the poty, a bunchof guys at the podium yesterday and he
said, quote, we've got allthe players. I feel like we've got
the right coaches. Now. Thesecoaches seem committed. They have really put
in the time and the effort sofar, that's what you want to see.
And I saw that, I waslike, what does he mean by
that? So I asked him toclarify that we finally have the right coaches,
(01:02:29):
and what he meant, Yeah,I just feel like, you know,
sometimes you know, when things don'twork out the last couple of years
and you have all these expectations, you know, guys just you know kind
of get like, dang, what'sgoing on? What's working? So you
know, maybe it's kind of agood thing to get a you know,
a breast of fresh air or aclean slay and stars just completely over.
You know, a lot of guysand players that you know worried about last
year and you know, contracts andthese things to that, and so you
(01:02:52):
know, maybe just get a freshstar, you know, fresh feeling throughout
the building. You know, maybechange is good for you know, some
people in the lives and moving forwardthings. So, like I said,
I'm looking forward to, you know, this new chapter of life and you
know, me coming back, especiallyfrom the injury, I just feel like
I have a lot to prove andI have a lot left on that table,
and maybe a fresh and breadth therewill help me and help the rest
(01:03:14):
of the team, you know.Just get over that hump. I'm gonna
spring, especially with all that titlethat he has. Yeah, and I
don't know how much he has toprove he's a good player. I also
want to we just want we wantedto play that one cut for you to
kind of clarify what you something mighthave seen him print or even to put
make no mistake if you listen tothe whole interview. We'll have a podcast
later after the show's done, Jess. We'll put it up there on the
(01:03:34):
podcast page at ninety three three kJdot commo or you can also get it
on the app. You can checkit out there. Don't confuse that though,
for him not being a Pete Carrollfan. Oh, he sung the
praises of Pete and but I thinkwhat you did here is way. He
was very very very appreciative of PeteCarroll and very very complimentary of Pete Carroll.
(01:03:54):
His first words were, well,he's a legend. He's a legend.
But I think what you heard fromhim there is something that you know
we mentioned earlier. Sometimes you justneed to make a change, and sometimes
the change is needed and I thinkfor this organization, maybe that change was
indeed needed. I think a guylike that can see that that it was
needed as well. So interesting commentsfrom Chenna and wos who there yesterday four
(01:04:15):
nine four five One tell him ornew text line when it's game time.
Also, you can send us avoice text as well. You can tell
me how awful Chris Cowford was yesterdayand how brulely was you never want to
hear him again. I can onlysay that in jest. I can only
say that because I heard the contrarywas true, that he did a really
nice job. And yeah, Idon't need him coming and luckily we've got
(01:04:35):
an opening somewhere and then come andtake my job. But hey, you
know what, who knows? ButI'm really I'm on a vacation day.
I feel guilty, man, Ilike I just I like I got to
take time off. In fact,I put time in off the other day.
I don't think Purple Sheet hasn't.I don't think he's approved it yet,
so I'm not sure about that situation. Don't don't make me call in
(01:04:56):
sick, Purple Sheet, don't makeme call in sick. I'll use those
eight thousand hours a sick time.I've got now from the star Rennels Sports
Desks Jordan ninety three point three KJRFMSports Headlines. These headlines are brought to
you by Buddies, Goodies and Glass. It's always Sports twenty at Buddy's.
We had breaking news this morning aswe learned through his family, O.
(01:05:17):
J. Simpson has died at theage of seventy six following a battle with
cancer. The Mariners found their offensein the tenth inning yesterday, heading to
extras tied at one with the BlueJays. Cal Rawley with an early exclamation
point, a two run homer kickthings off at the top of extras.
Logan Gilbert with a strong day onthe mound seven and two thirds he went,
(01:05:39):
giving up five hits and just asingle run, striking out eight.
Rynd Stane close things out for asix to one Mariners win, and they
will head back to host the Cubsthis weekend. The krack and host their
final home game tonight. They faceoff against the San Jose Sharks at seven
o'clock six thirty pre game right hereon your home for Kracking Hockey ninety three
three KJRM, and according to ESPNsources, the former interpreter for show,
(01:06:04):
Heyo Tani, is facing federal chargesrelated to his alleged theft of millions.
A lot to dig into there asWe will follow that story closely, but
right now it's time to get backto the show. All right, Welcome
back in two o'clock hour here onninety three point three KJRFMI interness with you.
(01:06:27):
We've kind of run all over theplace today. A lot of football,
including draft and NFL football. Butlet's get to this. Some college
football and not what I want totalk about. And no, it's not
what's going on over the University ofWashington. That's a dramatic pause. I'll
leave it that. Instead, Iwant to check in with a friend of
mine, Dad in Portland, Oregon, my old station, Tenny the Fan.
(01:06:49):
He is one half of the greatmorning show duo Dirt and Sprague.
Brandon Sprague joined us right now.Hello, sir, how are you?
I'm doing good? Ian? Howyou been? Man? That's good?
I think I kind of was thickingtoday. You kind of owe me one.
I like coming on your show.I'm a all the time, but
finally I had I get a chanceto call you guys, and unfortunately it's
not what I want to talk about. It's just I had a buddy of
(01:07:10):
mine, Brandon, text me todayand I should have mentioned Brend's olsu alom
Oregon State alum, go Beef's goKoog's go back to Here we go,
buddy back to. I had abuddy of mine in a group chat with
a bunch of old college roommates andfraternity brothers today send me a taxing and
it just was a link to theOregonian article and just as college football really
(01:07:31):
is broken. And that was hiswords, not the Oregonians words. Nick
Dasher wrote the story. It's hiddenbehind a paywall, but I think the
gist of it that many of ourlisteners and sports fans have seen is at
Oregon State running back Dami Martinez, who is arguably one of the top running
backs in the country coming back thisseason. He seems so committed to staying
(01:07:51):
at Oregon State and being a Beavermoving ahead despite all the changes the Mountain
West schedule and all that, andthen all of a sudden he's going to
the transfer portal. But it seemsto be a deeper issue than that.
We'll kind of jump into some ofthose issues in a second. But what
can you tell our listeners up hereabout what's going on with Damie Martinez.
Uh, he's bolted. This wasmister loyalty. You know there, there's
(01:08:14):
it's been a rough road. Youhighlight Ian Washington State and what you guys
have gone through in that, youknow situation and how we're a Pack two
situation in general. But you know, the one thing we had immediately was
loyalty. Right. We got thehead coaches in Alum the quarterback of the
fiestaval champion Beavers that are one ofthe best teams to ever play. They
had a great year, they wonthe Festival. Here comes Jonathan Smith's savior,
(01:08:35):
props it up, has all theseexpectations, gets the Beats back to
bowl respectability, maybe contention some seasonsand he leaves and it's it's a blind
sided And he didn't just leave foryou know, maybe he wants to go
to Pasadena and UCLA at this home. Nope, wasn't open. Ah you
dub he was. You see thereit's a big ten team now, Nope,
(01:08:58):
not available. He went to MichiganState and that was like probably the
first giant Hello, welcome to thePac two and the end of the PAC
twelve PAC ten conferences. We allgrew and knew it, and all we
had left after that was Damien Martinez, a back to back eleven hundred yard
rusher, All Conference player, probablya top five six running back in the
(01:09:20):
country. And he calls Smith asnake, and he's pledging this loyalty.
And what happens when the spring portalopens, he bolts four hundred K not
enough for the star running back. And so now you've got fans just broke
and confused, upset, angry, and it's just become quite the mess with
(01:09:41):
him entering the portal. Okay,so let's go through the whys of it,
and just we'll start with the NILwise, what do we know?
And this is I think this isBrandon honestly the hardest thing with the whole
NIL world right now. Like inpro sports, by and large, we
know what guys are making, weknow what the terms of the contract are,
we know that they're held to thesecontracts, and like, okay,
(01:10:01):
you signed a two year deal,a three year deal, you're a restricted
free agent, unrestricted free agent, what have you? In college, these
guys are getting paid and they shouldbe able to benefit. I think we
all agree off their name, imageand likeness, but they're now just getting
flat out paid. There's no name, image and likeness the days of Drew
Timmy doing commercials for Northern Quest whilethey still exist and guys are still doing
(01:10:23):
their name, image and likeness.I think Antoine Watson was on doing that
this year, but that still happens. But more Bor's just guys are flat
out getting paid to play. Andit feels like that's what Martinez was.
He was getting paid to play.I assume last year he got some NIOL
money and got paid and this yearas well, what was he getting paid
and what seems to be the conflictbetween him and the Oregon State Collective.
(01:10:46):
Yeah, you know, so theOregon State Collective is the Damn Nation Nil
Collective and there's a little dispute insome regards. Pete Bammell reported after it
was broken by beaver Blitz that Damienwas set to make four hundred k.
Somebody in the collective leaked at toPete family. There's no other way that
could have been leaked, and hecould have got that information. What's interesting
(01:11:10):
is Carrie Aeger's longtime described down herein the Portland area, very familiar with
Oregon State. His dad worked atOregon State. It's kind of a Bee
fan. He dis died a pieceand he talked to the collective leader at
Damn Nation, and basically, whatyou have here is when these kids,
let's say it's four hundred K,Damien Martinez, isn't just getting a bank
(01:11:30):
hit of Hey, four hundred Kis in your bank account. They're breaking
this up into increments, right,so it's like maybe it's four payments of
one hundred K or fifty K ortwenty five k at a time while being
asked to do certain things, whetherthat's sign autographs, go have appearances,
represent the university, whatever that is. That's how they do it. Well.
There was a dispute with a carincident. He had gotten a car,
(01:11:53):
but then he wanted a better car, so he went and got the
car. The collective agreed to payfor that car. He has a house,
which you know, like, Idon't know how many people his age
can even buy a house. Litalone has a house. And there's a
dispute between what he was asked whathe was making, and what they say
was just cut and dry. Thisis what he got, this is what
(01:12:15):
we were doing and he bailed. The real secret part of this is,
and it's tough because he's twenty twentyone years old and I don't know about
you, im, but when Iwas twenty twenty one years old, I
was an idiot. I wasn't readyfor life, right, So I'm not
even necessarily mad. Don't hate theplayer, hate the game. He went
and got an agent, And that'swhat's happening with a lot of these guys
is behind the scenes, you're startingto see agents pop up. And it's
(01:12:39):
not the only reason. Certainly, being unregulated and different universities playing by different
state laws and their own rules,it's all going to be messy, but
agents are only going to make itmessier and make people more selfish and look
out for their own interests. Andso, for whatever reason, he became
disgruntled with it, and he announcedyesterday he's bouncing. So there's a lot
(01:13:02):
of dispute between the nil part ofthis, and I don't know where you
stand on all of it. Butmy two cents is I pay twenty three
thousand dollars for that education at OregonState. I'm in radio. I don't
make a ton of money, sowhen I get those alumni donor emails,
I hit delete. Okay, thesedamnation, these nil collectives. I find
(01:13:27):
them interesting because some of these universitiesare backed by big booster money. Some
of these universities make a lot ofmoney in revenue. And we're sitting here
at Oregon State and they're like, hey, everybody needs to raise the money.
You want to play in the bigboy leagues. You got to make
big boy money. So they hitup a bunch of mees and say,
(01:13:50):
hey, here's the one hundred fiftydollars, please donate. And if I'm
donating to that, what am Igetting? Jordan Pope got a hundred k
last year for men's basketball. Theywere easily the worst team in the conference.
He's gone to Levon Ohoffen. Sheleft from the women's team because they
weren't even capitalizing on her in thatseason. And I just think you look
(01:14:12):
around now, and not every university, but schools like Oregon State, Like,
I think it's fair to say, what are you given money for?
You're not getting any return on themoney. It's not even keeping the best
players, and they've basically been regularlyrelegated, So I don't know, it's
a whole weird situation with the collectives, the ni L and all that stuff
(01:14:34):
is just it's kind of puzzling.Brenda Sprague Tenny the fan joining us in
from Portland. So did he getpaid for this year already or at least
some payments for what would be thetwenty performing in the twenty twenty four season,
not for spring practice, but forthe twenty twenty four season, and
then you know, say he gotlike one hundred thousand out of the four
(01:14:57):
hundred thousand or whatever it is,and he already some money in his pocket
and he because I assume, likewhen he bought the house and had the
car, that was based on twentytwenty three, right, But then has
he already been paid for this year? Now he's just gone that I cannot
answer. They they will not sharepublicly specific details on payments, how often
(01:15:20):
these athletes are getting paid, howmuch they've been paid. All I know
is based on the Egger story. He has made some of the four hundred
k, but it wasn't It wasn'tthe vast majority of it, and most
of it I think was predicated onhim playing in the season. And so
you know, four hundred K isa great gig if you can get it
(01:15:40):
right running back at a Mountain Westschool basically, But if Tennessee who needs
a running back says, we'd giveyou seven hundred k. I just I
think that's what's happened. This worldhas been created where it's you know,
it's not just Washington State and OregonState either, and like we we can
share in the four pate nature ofwhat the business and sports has become.
(01:16:01):
But like even the schools in thepower conferences, you think Purdue football is
excited? Football excited? Right now? Ellenoi you go through that whole list,
Yeah, the whole group. Yeah, yeah, no, no,
I guess you can't succeed. Well, the thing that kind of is hard
here is and I've had the sameproblem. I I kind of the same
questions, you know, with withthe Cougar collective as well, and I'm
(01:16:25):
sure a lot of people across thecountry with you know, everyone's got a
collective. Now, where's the moneygoing? How much are you paying?
What do you what's what's the contract? What does the contract say? Can
you just walk away? Like youand I, I mean you and I
can't just walk away from a radiocontract. We can't just walk away and
walk across the street to the competitor, or or go do something else.
(01:16:46):
We're locked in. I guess that'sthe that's where the unregulation just drives me
insane. So nobody knows what hisbeef is. Then he just decides I'm
out of here after calling Jonathan Smitha snake. Nobody has any idea yet.
I assume whenever he gets to whereverhe's going, and there's like six
or seven schools that he's been tiedto, I'm sure he'll give some kind
(01:17:10):
of answer. There's you know, everybody's filling in the blanks. It's anywhere
from he wants to shine. Hewants more of the spotlight. And it's
like, no, that's not athing. There's a Toledo cornerback that's going
to be picked in the top liketwenty of the NFL Draft. You don't
have to be in a big conferencefor NFL scouts to see you. So
by that some people think it's money, which you know certainly wouldn't put it
(01:17:30):
past that, because if you're gettingfour hundred k at Oregon State, could
you get six hundred seven hundred kat Kentucky or Tennessee or a desperate school
maybe, and some people even throwout the offense. Ryan Gunderson just came
from UCLA. He's in Oregon Statealum, former quarterback. Yeah, this
is first gig, is a realOC. He's a pass happy offense that
doesn't feature you know, traditional JonathanSmith run like concepts. So we don't
(01:17:55):
know what the real answer is here. You know what's interesting is there's a
twenty four to seven article that waswritten in February and I just ended up
somebody, a buddy of MI toldme about it, so I went and
read it. And at one ofthese All American games in and they interview
these four and five star kids andthey keep them anonymous, of course,
but they interview top one hundred prospects, and it's interesting going through like one
(01:18:15):
kid says I made se I'm goingto make seventy five K. Another kid
says I'm going to make two hundredand fifty K. One kid says I'm
going to make eighty five the nextkid says a million. And certainly we
could fill out like, oh,that's a five star at the four star.
But they also talk about the contractsand the way they work, and
it's just cut and dry as ifyou don't you're not committed year to year.
(01:18:36):
These are not like athlete deals whereyou sign a three year deal.
It's like it's a year by year, portal by portal basis for a lot
of these schools. And I justdon't know how you operate a business little
on a roster when you're working withthat much uncertainty legally, it's insane.
Brenda Spray from Portland joining us,say the fan. I guess the thing
(01:18:56):
that really will wrap it up herein a second is that what jumps out
is, you know the tampering, which used to be a really big thing
that you couldn't do in college sports, right, Like you could not tamper
with guys. You could not activelyrecruit somebody who's playing and signed to a
letter of in ten and another roster. And while as still that may not
be you know, like you don'thave Jonathan Smith's not calling Jamian Martinez directly
(01:19:19):
from Michigan State. The third partiesthere's tampering, like like they're still tampering.
This screams to me. A guythat was making some money and he's
got his agent, like you said, and the agent finds out that hell,
there's at least five or six otherschools that it'll pay you twice that,
So let's get the hell out ofhere. Like that's it. It
seems like it's as simple as that. Oh, it is as simple as
(01:19:43):
that. I would take it astep further. You know, you need
evidence to say things out loud,But like, I think we have a
lot of evidence scenarios. I knowwhen Jonathan Smith left there were people and
family members and friends and and whatnot. They were posting on behalf of athletes
like, oh, you know, lying to our faces this whole season.
(01:20:04):
Some believe he was checked out aboutthe last five weeks, which honestly,
if a coach is going to movefrom another school, it usually is about
the midway point of a season whenall of that stuff starts to show it
though behind the scenes, yep, which would would explain him going for a
fake field, go thirty yards outin Arizona. But I think what's interesting
is you do get the noise, but you don't get the follow through investigations.
(01:20:28):
You don't get any actual charges beingfiled. You know why, because
they're all dirty. All of thesecoaches live in this ecosystem of it has
to be how I protect myself right. So, whether that's the coach going
from Arizona to you dub or coachgoing from Oregon State to Michigan State,
they may not be directly asking thekid when they shouldn't, but they're finding
(01:20:50):
avenues. These coaches are too smart. All these people know how to properly
do this. There's a reason theSEC has become the SEC. It's like
thirty years is a bag man. They understood the system and how to do
it. It's why Fred Taylor cansay I got fifty grand from Georgia and
I was never gonna go to Georgiabecause that's how the system's been and now
(01:21:11):
it's just amplified. So you can'tYou can't prove a coach said anything unless
you've got actual text or phone callevidence. But if you don't think these
coaches are all operating in some kindof a shadiest way because of what this
is, I think I think we'relying to ourselves if we're not being honest
about that. Yeah, it's it'sgreasy. Greasy is a first word that
comes to mind. I appreciate youpopping on the basketball season. When does
(01:21:33):
it end coming up in a weekor so, a couple of days we
stopp paying attention. Well, theseason ended, usually going into it,
it's been a dark year. Ithas been. I'm sorry. Say hi
to my buddy Dirt, your partnerdown there and we'll talk again soon.
Thanks Brandon, Thanks Ian, gopack to go back too. Let's go
(01:21:56):
pack too, Brandon Sprague down therein Portland with the latest on what's going
on, Davey Martinez and just it'sthe more I think about that story,
the more I just think about howyou don't go. You don't go from
a guy that's ripping on your formercoach. You don't go from a guy
that's that's pledging his allegiance to theorganize, to the program and the school
(01:22:16):
and all that, to all ofa sudden having this quote falling out with
the collective overnight. I I it'sit's the problem inherent with the system that
we have right now. There's andand it's a two way street. Like
I'm not going to condone because I'msure with the collectives, like they can't
(01:22:36):
sign these guys to a deal thatsays it's you have to fulfill the deal,
right, because then that beings anemployee there's all kinds of other issues
that coming into play. I mean, it's just a greasy, ugly situation
that's unwritt and it's broken because it'sit's unregulated and never got ahead of it.
And I think we live in aworld where most of us are just
kind of done with regulations and rules. I think it's the after shocks of
(01:23:00):
twenty twenty that we all kind offeel like our world is overregulated. You
know, we live in a statewhere they're telling us that in a couple
of years you can't use natural gasanymore, which nine hundred thousand people in
our state used. We're just donewith being regulated and told what to do.
But in this case, you needsome regulations. You need to have
a regulation to say this is howit works. They kind of gotten ahead
(01:23:20):
of it and made it a bettersystem. Well, getting ahead of it
would have been way out of characterfor anything in college athletics. Yeah,
because that just doesn't You and Iboth know that doesn't happen, Jess,
It just does not happen. TheMartinez thing is a bummer, though,
because a guy that truly was likehe's in man, like this is a
guy. This guy's a Beaver,he's gonna suck it up, and Brandon's
(01:23:44):
right. I understand you want toplay against the best competition, but being
a big fish in a little pond, if you're gonna, if you have
aspirations for the next level, isn'tthe worst thing either. They find you.
Josh Allen played at Wyoming guys.I mean, we can go through
a whole litany of places. BobbyWagner's a Hall of Fame linebacker. He
played at Utah State when Utah State, I believe was an independent still at
(01:24:05):
the time. They may have justbeen joining the Mountain West Conference, but
they were a non factor, nonentity. People will find you perk up
at Eastern Washington. Yeah, yougo through the list of guys. It's
it's ridiculous. The bigger problem Ithink a lot of people, I would
say a lot of people, includingmyself have is just the fact that you
(01:24:26):
can jump at any possible opportunity. As soon as someone tampers with you,
you're gone. And I just there'ssomething wrong with that. There just is
something wrong with that. Anyway,we'll take a break. Your thoughts four
nine, four to five one tellLaura text line, when's game time?
Man it is windy at Augusta, speaking of the speaking of Augusta, We've
got an update for you.
