Yeah, hey, where's everybody atHope our staff's enjoying their lunch. Uh
huh, I hope you're enjoying yourlunch today. What'd you get for lunch
today? They bring you something?Nope, I got a protein drink and
a banana. Yep. And somewould say that's probably more than you should
(00:21):
eat anyway, but that's okay.Anyway. Yeah, that's my favorite day
of the year, Big company outing, and here we are, big company
outing. She at least get aT shirt out of the deal. Hey,
I stole one. It's not stealing, it's they want you to wear
them. Yeah, wearing with thegame. I'm not going to the game.
Yeah you're not. You're here withme. Whi'sk that's the game.
(00:46):
That's funny. That's all right.We got a good show. I'm really
excited for our guest at twelve twentytoday, Glory and Navarrees is the she's
a Mountain West Conference commissioner and she'sgoing to join us at twelve twenty.
I mean, college athletics are justit is. I mean the term wild
wild West he's being used I guessyou don't even need to over use not
(01:06):
really over using that. I thinkit's true. It's wild, it's crazy.
So we'll talk to her. What'sgoing on in the future of her
conference, Wazoo and Oregon State partof that conference, or if you know,
I mean, what's going on inthe ACC is crazy. I mean
clem'son FSU are given the middle fingerthe conference. They want out. They're
kind of locked in right now.So we'll touch in on her with just
a lot of different topics to hit. I'm a Mountain West guy. I
(01:29):
like the conference. I'll be honestwith you. I was, and I'll
touch more around this. At oneo'clock, I was in Salt Lake when
they called them the Breakaway eight. When they started the conference, they all
left the whack. And so thefirst year I was working in Salt Lake
was the first year of the MountainWest with you know, specifically BYU and
Utah, Wyoming, Air Force,New Mexico, UNLV, San Diego State
(01:51):
might be missing somebody, maybe FresnoState. They were all in that conference,
and I like the conference. Itwas fun. There's some good football
being played, there's some really andthere's always been good basketball being played,
but they're not a power five andso you know, existing in the world
of non power five and the worldof college football, specifically with the money,
it's hard. So we'll talk toher about that. Bobby Casperl join
us Rero Golf Radio at two o'clock. PGA Championship is coming up tomorrow.
(02:15):
It starts tomorrow. I don't forgetour Major Golf Challenge PGA edition is online

nine groupings in the tournament, havea chance to win golf for four Gamble

to Gamble Sands, Pro Golf DiscountKPMG Women's PGA Championship all bringing us the
(02:36):
Major Golf Challenge again. All thedetails oninety three three kJ dot com go
enter right now, so we'll checkin with Bobby about that. Mariners losers
last night drop the game to theKansas City Royal still have a chance to
win the series with the win today. That game tips off or face or
the first pitch is coming up justafter one o'clock this afternoon. MS dropped
to twenty three and twenty. Thegood news is the Texas Rangers are real
(02:57):
and they have lost five straight games. The eight have lost three in a
row. Houston showing a few signsof life. They are They've won three
in a row and still eight gamesunder five hundred, but five and a
half behind Seattle. But Texas, man, thank you. We appreciate you
guys sucking right now we do againstthe Cleveland Guardians. So they're luckily because
that's going on Seattle kind of thewin loss, win loss little game they're
(03:22):
playing right now. After losing theseries last week, they still find themselves
to the Mariners, a game anda half above five hundred. Dom Canzone
is back. He was activated today. Sam Haggerty was sent down, so
Canzone is back. I listened toAaron Goldsmith on earlier with Greg Bell,
and I was like, yeah,we live in a world now, and
(03:44):
I'm not this is not a criticismof Aaron, but we live in a
world now where Dom Canzone, Likepeople are excited about Dom Canzone coming back.
What world are we living in?Did I what did I miss something?
Yeah? I mean he had itokay start to year, did but
no, you're right, it's havingthat be your savior. I'm not that
we need one right now. We'replaying all right, but it's still yeah,
it's should be getting excited about somethinga little bit more. Buddy Wo
(04:08):
gets to start today. Let's seehow he is health wise. Remember,
came out a little bit earlier thanthey expected the last game, but they
downplayed it, and he's he's backout there, so you would assume he's
okay. You would assume he's okay. We'll see, considering it was a
precaution quote unquote that was very similarto the injury he had. We'll see.
(04:30):
Yeah. I just don't every timeI hear precaution, I get a
little chill. I'm like, yeah, I think this is good. What's
the precaution for you guys, becausethe precaution last year when he took Robbie
Ray out after six innings at hisfirst start and he didn't pitch again,
still hasn't pitched. So yeah,I don't know what your precautions. I
don't know what the bar is forprecautions for the Mariners too, you know.
Yeah, yeah, we'll see youin twenty twenty six, I guess
right, Yeah, apparently apparently hemight be back by this time Tourny twenty
(04:55):
five, but we'll see, we'llget to. We have some great sound
for the Daily Power at one fivefrom Rick Tocket, the coach of the
Vancouver Canucks. We played Andrews hadthe Canucks ending in the headlines there it
was what a game that was us, What a night we had last night
really in sports in our market, and we talked about it yesterday a little
bit. I have some preliminary TVnumbers in the general sense. I'll have
(05:18):
more to moral for you, butin general sense, the Marriors obviously crushed
anything that was in our market. They had a pretty good number last night
TV wise. Did we find outwhat if Storm run Prime last night?
I did not. I didn't either, but I didn't. I can tell
you this, I didn't look likethose numbers don't count for the overall numbers,
(05:40):
at least locally. I don't thinkthey do. Storm had I think
twelve thousand was their Cube audience lastnight at the peak, so better than
normal, better than the Sounders againstthe Timbers the other day, which their
numbers are massively disappointing. No one'swatching them right now, and probably is
because a couple of reasons. Onethey're not good and two it's you know,
(06:00):
it used to be consistently that youcould watch them on you know,
Fox FS one, Fox thirteen,Fox Plus wherever, and now unless you
subscribe, you just they're kind ofout of sight, out of mind.
We'll get to a little bit thatafter we have a conversation with Gloria Navares,
because we'll do that a little bitone o'clock. Maybe it is better
(06:21):
to be on a linear broadcast network. It depends on what sport you are,
for sure. Yeah, if you'retrying to grow and like kind of
get more eyeballs on it, Idon't think having a paywall behind it is
smart. I would tend to agreewith you. I think college football,
I think you have a built inaudience that and I think there's such an
appetite for that that you're okay withit. NFL and we'll get to this
(06:45):
two in the one o'clock hour orthe NFL some of the league's coming out
for scheduling sounds like Amazon No Netflixhas taken over the Christmas game or games
plural, whatever it is. Soand that would give you, I believe,
now four would you got paywalls arethe best way to put it.
But yes, streaming pay for streamingservices with the NFL this year Peacock,
Amazon, Netflix, and ESPN Plus. Right, but even MLS is even
(07:11):
a step further because you mentioned thatabout the sounders. Is because even if
you have Apple TV, that doesn'tmean you have MLS Season Pass. You
have to pay extra for that, which is right, so lame. That's
the worst part. That is theworst part, yea. Because if you
have Netflix or Amazon, well, then I shall just give this if you
have if you're an Amazon Prime member, and I think the last time we
checked on this show, there wasthree hundred and fifty million people worldwide,
(07:32):
most of them here in the UnitedStates of America that have Amazon Prime membership.
Yep, you get to watch theNFL games. I think it's close
to like seventy percent in the Seattlearea too. Yeah, so you probably
get to watch pretty easily. Yeah, but you have to put behind a
paywalls goofy So we'll talk about thata lot, so much more. Gloria

excited to have this next guest joinus, and I appreciate her carving out
some time for us. And I'msure what is a very busy world that
she lives in. The Commissioner ofthe Mountain West Conference, the second commissioner
in the history of the conference,Gloria Navarez, joined us right now in
the Beacon Plumbing hotline. Gloria, how are you today? Doing great?
Thanks for having me. I appreciateyou coming on a lot of interest in
(09:03):
your conference here in Seattle because thenumber of the Washington State alums and fans
that live on our side of thestate over here, and I know you're
well aware of that from your timein the Pac twelve conference as well before
the WCC and now on to replacethe great Craig Thompson, those are some
big shoes to feil. Gloria,How I know. I knew Craig a
little bit when I worked in SaltLake and one of the great commissioners in
(09:24):
college athletics, and you take overfor him. And what has been the
biggest challenge or the biggest thing that'sjumped out at you so far? Taking
over for Craig? Everything, No, Craig has been amazing. I have
him on speed down. He's beenso gracious with his time and advice.
(09:45):
And I don't know if you saw, we named our Football Championship Trophy after
him in honor of everything he's done. So it's been really great working with
him. Yeah, that's awesome tohear. I remember the breakaway eight,
nineteen ninety eight, and when thatconference started, I kind of think back,
it's he was kind of ahead ofhis time, and they're taking steps
and big, big chances back then. Did some of the schools that are
still part of your conference? Obviouslynot all of them are, especially the
(10:09):
two schools in Salt Lake City. But there's a lot of things I want
to hit on today, Glory.Let me start with this. What is
the biggest challenge that you face andthe Mountain West Conference faces in today's world
of college athletics? I think, and maybe just because it's hot on my
mind right now, you know, the House settlement, Although I think by
and large could be good news asfar as long term stability, it's definitely
(10:33):
just another indicator of the widening gapbetween kind of the top of our ecosystem
and the bottom. I think weare squarely high middle, but you know,
I think it's important to our schoolsto continue to compete in that cut,
and it certainly gets more and morechallenging. Yeah, the so called
power five versus the group or youknow, the not even a power five
(10:54):
anymore, but the group of fiveconferences or the you know, if you
want to call it, a midmajor. I guess in basketball, how
would you describe the Mountain West Conference, especially a conference that just you know,
puts six of its eleven teams intothe NCAA Men's basketball Tournament and has
had success on the football side aswell. But away from a basketball standpoint,
I'd be hard pressed to call itanything besides a big time major conference.
(11:16):
For what you guys have accomplished.Well, think about the new expanded
playoffs and that ten SBS leagues andfive of the highest rank conference champions get
a chance to play in that playoff. And so that's how we are positioning
ourselves going forward. We want tobuy for one of those five spots.
(11:39):
Along those lines, how important isscheduling? And I guess I bring that
up from this standpoint, you know, with like Oregon State Washington State.
Now at least for football in yourconference like everyone's, it feels like for
your conference and for say the otherconference is not named the Big ten SEC
ACC in Big twelve, it's reallyimportant to maybe build up wins in a
(12:01):
very arbitrary, subjective world of collegefootball rankings and the way that works,
you don't want to take on acouple losses, but like you said,
you still want to get it's veryimportant to get to that tournament, the
college football Playoffs. So how importantis scheduling in that regard because you do
want to build up wins along theway I mean, and right behind you
know, attracting and growing talent inour team, Scheduling is right up there.
(12:28):
It is, and I wouldn't evenisolate it to any particular league.
No matter where you are in thesystem, scheduling is one of the most
important things you do, whether you'regoing to get a lot of high quality,
challenging games in league or you haveto get them in non league.
And it's never a one size fitsall. Every year schools coaches have to
look at their squad and determine whatcome team you're going to have and what
(12:52):
schedule best fits your aspirations for thatteam in that year. Yeah, and
it's a moving target, it is. I mean, just as I look
at your you know your football settingsfrom a year ago. You know your
best team in terms of your youknow your top you know the San Jose
State, Boise State, you know, they all have this fills very Pac
twelve, like Gloria. They allhave losses a lot of them against each
(13:13):
other a lot of parody. Wedefinitely saw that in your basketball league this
year. There's no doubt about that. Their top teams just kind of it.
They took turns beating each other upon that CBS Sports network those late
games, which I love watching allthe time. But even football, you
know these nine and five Santas State, eight and five, and then you
know nine and four for Air Force, Wyoming, et cetera. Those aren't
those are numbers, those those righthand columns. They probably don't go get
(13:35):
you into the college football playoff, right if you have more than say two
or three losses in this conference. And I think that's the conversation all the
commissioners are having about how we needto rethink how we judge strength of schedule
and how we analyze teams. Footballhas such a small sample size compared to
sport like basketball, where you dohave a lot of cross pollination and some
(13:56):
head to heads against common opponents orwhatever. And you know, I think
with the size of leagues these days, you're going to see more of that.
I think it's rare. It's goingto be rareer to see an undefeated
or a one loss team Gloria Navarrezjoining us the Mountain West Conference Commission.
All right, let me let meget to our local team here, and
(14:16):
I guess I would ease and sayteams since we're out here in the Northwest.
But how what is the arrangement?Because I think there's a lot of
confusion. I'm frankly a little bitconfused with it myself. What is the
arrangement with Washington State and Oregon Statefor football? Right now? With the
Mountain West Conference, we have aone year scheduling agreement for next season or
this coming season, and think ofthem as maybe a whole package of non
(14:39):
conference games for the Mountain West.So they won't be competing for our football
regular season champion and they won't qualifyfor our championship at the end of the
year, but they have been integratedinto our schedules to provide a full slate
of games for them. What happensafter the one year TVD is that based
(15:03):
on a television contract or? Imean, I know there's been conversations.
I would assume there's been conversations,although Washington State A McCoy's there, but
kind of without an athletic director rightnow. But is there a chance that
that would just be a one yearand then extended for another year, or
is there a chance that it couldbe broadened into a bigger role in the
Mountain West Conference for other sports besidesfootball. I think everything's on the table.
(15:26):
But to be honest, at thetime we signed the agreement, there
were so much unknown. I mean, there's still a lot of unknown,
but at the time there was evenmore so. So honestly, Teresa Gould,
commissioner of the PAC two, andI were at meetings or in a
we all had different meetings, butwe saw each other and said, hey,
(15:48):
we need to connect, and Isaid, yes, absolutely, do
you mind if we do it aftermeetings? So frankly, it's just a
matter of having not yet had thechance to connect. Sure, why did
Washington State and Oregon State? Who'schoice was it not to bring in the
other sports into the Mountain West Conferenceand instead go to your old conference?
I mean, your cross pollination hereglory is amazing because you were you know,
(16:08):
you come from the WCC, youworked in the PAC twelve for a
long time, and now you're incharge of the Mountain West Conference. So
what went into the WCC picking upall the other sports for the two Land
grant schools in the Northwest, outsideof baseball for Oregon State, which is
going independent obviously, but everything elseis going to the WCC. What went
into that as opposed to going toyour conference? You know, we had
(16:30):
talked about, hey, after weget through this football agreement, let's talk
about all other sports. But Isay it was mutual, and it just
made a lot of sense, alot of sense for those two schools to
go to the WCC. They justlost BYU. They have fewer schools than
us, and they were very opento the conversation about integrating into regular season
(16:52):
and championship, which would have beena longer conversation for US, and at
that point the clock was ticking forthe coming season. Was there a pushback
from any of your basketball coaches specificallyin the conference, or even athletic directors
or coaches period for other sports? You know, I mean until obviously things
have changed massively. Washington State losttheir basketball coach. I think about their
(17:15):
volleyball program, which was a topten program the last few years, but
Jen Greeney leaves, so it's alittle bit different. But was there any
pushback from other coaches or administrators inthe Mountain West saying hey, we don't
really want to deal with these othertwo schools coming into our conference from the
PAC twelve. Honestly, we didn'teven get that far, so there didn't
really have a chance to even havethe conversation to see whether there would be
(17:36):
pushback or not. The football developmentnegotiation was so involved. I mean,
it's a lot. I don't thinkthe general public understands how much it takes
to integrate two schools into a footballschedule and how much all the things that
go into it require negotiation and prethought. So it really got to a
point where like, wow, wejust got this sign and the clock is
(18:00):
ticking, and it just seemed abetter fit for them with the WCC the
Yeah, the scheduling, we justtalked about that at the start of this
conversation. I don't think I've neverunderstood scheduled. It's funny, this is
the day the NFL schedule comes out, right, and it's like the biggest
thing in sports is like whoa, and there's leaks in this and that,
and the NFL schedule is all thesedifferent things. But this is the same
(18:22):
thirty two teams that player, Butyou're college football. I've never quite understood
it. You're scheduling like eight yearsout in advance, you know, and
then those games get canceled. I'msure your schools go through that all the
time as well. It's like, well, we're supposed to play Ohio State
now they just canceled. We don'twant to They're not going to play us
now. There is nothing harder incollege athletics on a year year basis,
is there than scheduling football games?Absolutely? And then you mentioned the NFL.
(18:44):
The NFL gets to dictate all theteams at all the games, whereas
in a league, you know,we get to dictate a lot. But
that whole non conference schedule is abunch of moving parts that depend on a
lot of things outside of our control. To your point, you know,
sometimes school schedule or whatever facilities gounder renovation, things life. So it
(19:04):
is a very very difficult, complexthing. And right now John Sullivan in
our office is deep in it withour television partners working through finalizing our schedule.
What is your television contract? Whatis it? I think it goes?
Is it two more years for theMountain West Conference? What is your
media rights deal? Right now,can you kind of describe that for us
(19:25):
and tell us what it looks likeover the next couple of years two more
years, So it expires in twentysix and our two primary partners are Fox
and CBS, and they take aline's share of our inventory, and we'll
probably go to market probably in aboutsix to eight months a year in advance
of the expiration of the agreements. So if you do do that, I'm
(19:48):
sure the conversation will be from networkexecutives that you know, the two schools
that are playing football right now,Washington and Oregon Stay, why you say
in Oregon State, what value dothey bring to your conference? In your
mind right before you can talk abouta network executive in your mind, is
there a value to Washington State andOregon State as far as the Mountain West
Conference is concerned. Well, youknow, like you said, I was
in the PAC twelve. I havea lot of friends and great connections there.
(20:11):
I respect immensely what they have built. I love those two schools.
I think they look a lot likeus. But when you ask about value
from a league perspective, that changesyear to year. You know, sometimes
depending on what's happening in the environment. Just adding to add numbers in your
league or to get to a certainnumber has value. Sometimes if you're a
(20:33):
good position, media markets can dictatevalue, and then in other years,
depending on how you're performing or notperformance i e. NCAA basketball units or
CSP at large selection can be ofvalue. So it really is a product
of what's happening in the environment andwhere your league is at the time.
I guess one of my parts whenI ask about value, I guess I
(20:56):
would ask this, do you lookat and again, you have a better
read than a lot of people wouldon those two schools, having worked in
this conference and all this old conferencenow and even being on the West coast
for so long. Is Washington State? Because I always I'm a Wazoo lum.
I always Bristol, and I workin TV. I Bristol. When
I hear stuff like, well, you know the Pullman and Spokane markets small,
(21:18):
I'm like, well, seventy fivepercent of the lums live in Seattle.
It's media market. Twelve Oregon Stateis not the core Vallis TV market.
It's Portland. I look at itthat way, but I don't know
if you do or if network executivesdo. I guess that's what I'm looking
for with value. Yeah, andyou know that can be sliced several different
ways. But I think Gonzaga isa great example small geographic market yet huge
(21:41):
media recognition value. And you haveschools that are opposite. Maybe they're located
in a huge market like LA buthaven't had the success to garner the following.
So it you know, it reallydepends that you can be in a
small demographic area or a d mI or whatever they call it DMA,
(22:03):
but outperform and create a national brandand following. So it's kind of a
sliding scale. I think of thosetwo factors in my mind, I would
agree and Gloria, Gloria, Iwon't say or you won't say it,
but a Pepperdine we're talking to youright now in Malibu. But it's it's
that's what it is. You haveteams that are in say that you did
not say you did not say that. I said that. But no,
(22:25):
I think it's a it's a fairpoint because when you bring up you know,
I mean there's a lot of schoolsthat are in big markets, and
the w c C is chock fullof those, right that are that are
that are you know, in bigmarkets, but maybe they don't register in
terms of television numbers, and soit's it's all. I guess it's a
balancing act that you guys have togo through. I'm curious from your standpoint,
the Mount West Conference standpoint, whenyou're watching the landscape of college athletics
(22:48):
right now, we already have thismassive shift. The PAC twelve goes away
to the pack two. The ACChas got some issues going on with some
lawsuits and legalities. Do you thinkthat we are still going to see a
massive of upheaval and a seismic shiftover the next twelve to twenty four thirty
six months in terms of college athleticsin realignment or do you think it's going
to settle down for a while.I don't know if it's specific to realignment,
(23:11):
but I do fully do believe there'sa more destabilization or rough waters,
shall we say, ahead within thenext year and then I think and I
think it's centrals around the house settlementand other external forces to college athletics.
But then after that, I dothink the CSP deal provides some stability for
(23:33):
at least incentives against realignment within thesystem. The media contract by and large
have been signed. We're one ofthe last college entities to go to market,
like I said, in like sixor seven months. And then hopefully
that settles as well, because Ithink those are the two drivers in our
most reasons. And then of coursethe lawsuits and litigation are the things that
(23:56):
have been pushing us into a littlebit of chaos. Gloria Navaris joining us,
got a couple more for uta.Let you go, and I do
appreciate your time today here in Seattle, Commission of the Mountain West Conference.
How do Mountain West schools balance theirathletic budgets compared to And this is the
big concern I think a lot ofschools across the country are having right now,
(24:17):
even in the Power five, likewe were trying to balance our budget
with bigger media right steals and say, you guys have the two schools out
here, their media rights steals arenext to nothing now compared to what they
used to be. So how doesa San Jose state or a Boise state,
a UNLV, Wyoming, et cetera. How do they balance their athletic
department budgets or how do they getclose to where they needed to go to
(24:37):
keep boards of regions happy and thingslike that without the mega dollars that we
see in some of the other biggerconferences. Well, you know, not
one size fits all in all schools, even those in a conference that have
a lot of similarities, are different. But by and large, after you
know, some of the top youknow, one percent of schools, many
of our schools are subsidized by they'reeither you know, stay local or campus
(25:04):
entities to some degree. It's alwaysdifferent, but there is some offset there
and there's always that that balancing actand that you know, the stuff that
we hear all the time about whatthe future is for the two schools and
the pack to itself. How doyou balance that? Because I'm sure that
they would like to have, youknow, we've heard about it for a
(25:25):
while, like steal some of theteams from your conference. And yet there
they are, they're trying to bepartners with you guys in football. I
guess I ask you this, doyou think that the if they came to
you today or tomorrow or next week, would you and the Mountain West Conference
welcome those two schools into your conferenceor do you think they have other ideas
and other plans that maybe don't youknow, jive with what you guys are
doing. Well. You know,it's funny people ask me about being a
(25:49):
commissioner. Folks don't realize how muchlittle legitimate authority we don't have or do
you have? Right, everything wedo is by vote of the board or
the count. And so the questionreally is, after a thorough discussion through
our process, could we get toa vote a super majority to a them.
(26:10):
And again, it really depends onthe time and circumstance and what's going
on and what's important to us,what our needs are at the time,
and what have been brought to thetable. And you know, I've been
consistent in saying I believe Early isopen to anything that makes us stronger.
And again, that definition of strengthor value can change depending on what's happening
in the environment at any one time, but that would be the metric by
(26:36):
which we would analyze any future edition. Right now today, do those two
schools make you stronger by the definitiontoday? Yeah, I would think so.
I mean, it's been a minutesince I've got you know, since
the PAC two imploded that we werevisiting there. I had to have to
you know, even then when wetalked about it, taking a look under
(26:56):
the hood of assets, liabilities, long term sustainability, that type of thing.
Those are all things that we analyze. Gloria, I really appreciate you
coming on today. It's a wildworld, as they say, a wild
West, and certainly in the MountainWest it's a wild West right now as
well in college athletics. It's there'sno doubt. There's no doubt about that.
(27:18):
Thank you so much for coming ontoday. We appreciate your time.
Yes, thanks for having me.There's Gloria Navars from the Mountain West conference
joining us here on the Beacon PlumbingHotline. This it's massive uncertainty. Still,
I think that's the easiest way toput it out there. I think
we'll know a lot more in thenext she said, six to eight months
when they go to market with theirmedia rites deal. Kind of feel like
(27:41):
she knows a little bit more abouthow to do that than George Kliofkoff did.
That's for damn sure. Of course, that bar set very low,
very low. But no, Ithink it's you know, we'll touch more
on this than the one o'clock hour, I think. But like with those
two schools, you know, theirdruthers would be they'd rather have the pack
to be come the PAC ten again, or something along those lines. I
(28:02):
think Gloria's issue is she's trying tokeep and that conference together, you know,
and what makes sense to start apack two. And even if you
did start the PAC twelve back upwith the name and everything else, I
don't know. I don't know ifit would generate the same juice across the
country. I don't. I thinkin some ways maybe, and I hate
(28:25):
to say this, I think insome ways you're better off just trying to
join the Mountain West Conference full timebecause the PAC ten pack eight, PAC
twelve, whatever you would call it, if it's the two land grant schools
in our state and aren't in theNorthwest. And then you add say UNLV,
Boise State, air Well, maybeair Force, Fresno States, God,
(28:48):
I don't know, Utah State,Colorado States, San Diego State,
what have you. It's Does thatmake you a power five? Probably not.
I don't think it gives you seethe table. I don't think gives
you see the table. And II think maybe you're better off saying listen,
I think there is a I thinkthat the markets matter. Seattle certainly
matters more so than Portland. It'sa top twelve market. I can point
(29:10):
to the TV numbers and show youwhat this what Wazoo does in this market,
it's massive. Well, Portland doessuck. So Portland does suck by
the way down all three. ButI think there is I think there is
something too. If you were togo to market and say yeah, and
we're also adding these two schools inthe Portland and Seattle markets and people do
care. It's not like, youknow, she wasn't gonna say it,
but she's what she's saying is loyal. Marymont doesn't matter in La right,
(29:33):
Peppernine doesn't matter in La San Francisco, University of doesn't men. Saint Mary's
don't matter in the Bay area.So you know, when you kind of
throw those teams out there and say, ah, they're in this, it
doesn't matter. But Portland does careabout Oregon State. Washington State is still
a big deal in Seattle, sothose things do matter. You're going to
you're going to go and negotiate andgo into market. I think you're probably
(29:56):
be wise to have those two schoolson board. They wouldn't increase and raise
the boat. She didn't want togo that far. I get that,
right, but I think that there'sno doubt that they would. Yeah,
and for those two schools, you'renot going to get what you got before.
I think what I think the biggerthing they're holding out for right now
is that the ACC implodes and thenall of a sudden, Stanford and Color
scrambling. Maybe the Big twelve comescalling. But she's right. R two
(30:18):
schools in the Northwest. They dofit the profile, these two of these
eleven schools to have some stability tolike and get something where you have a
regular schedule. And I don't know, I mean the days of being a
power five for those schools is over. Yeah. I hate to admit it.
It's my school. I hate toadmit it, but I think it's
over all. Right, think youBrak come back. We'll reset the hour.
We'll hear from Scott Service right gettingready for the Marriers game. Top

marriers manage or pre game getting readyfor the Mirrors to wrap up their series
with the Kansas City Royal. Speakingto the media moments ago, Hello everybody,
(31:07):
we will wrap up the home standtoday. Perfect day for a game
again, so good Brian Woo outthere. Obviously last time out cut a
little bit short, just hit alittle stiffness his forearm after the long inning
we had. So he has responded, well, it should be good to
go today again. Give me ona limited pitch count. We won't let
him get to one hundred pitches orclose to it today, but he's feeling
(31:30):
good, so hopefully you can giveus a good effort just like it did
last time out, and we'll haveto go on the bullpen after that.
So I'll take any questions. Lasttime out, you would say that maybe
it's a little bit of the routinein between innings that he's got to find
too. Is that something that youcan figure out in season that you talked
to him about or is that kindof as things progress, Well, when
you're in the middle of long endinglike that, these guys come up with.
(31:51):
Everybody does their own thing, youknow. Logan is down underneath,
and even in the visiting ballparks, and sometimes you don't have as much room
as we have here. He's throwinginto a sock. He's keep his arm,
lose things like that. Other guysdon't do as much. The rock
does not do as much. He'sjust happy we're scoring runs. And he'll
uh, he's just you know,he's a veteran. But you do need
(32:12):
to have a routine during those longinning. Certainly, pitching changes and you
put up a big, crooked number, and those are things that you learn
as you get you know, alittle bit more experience in the league,
and Brian needs to stay more activemoving around if you do put up a
big inning again, I hope wehave that problem today. Well we'll take
it. What did you like toput you off from him? Before there?
He threw the ball really well.I think the fastball is his pitch,
(32:36):
you know, the two fastballs, the two seamer and the four seaver.
You know, be getting aggressive intostrike zone is critical for Brian.
Just that you don't have the longat bats, the pitch count gets driven
up early in the game. That'llbe really important today. Anytime you go
into a game like this, you'rehoping to get five innings and that would
be awesome if you can do thattoday. He has some success against lefties
(32:57):
too in that last outing. Whatdid you like that about that? Uh,
you know, it's a thing bothhim and Bryce there are going to
see a lot of left handed hitterswhen they're in there, and seems like
Bryce Miller has figured that out.You know with the split. Brian would
just not have a split yet.But just you have to be efficient.
You got to be in the strikezone early. You can't get try to
get too cute. You got tochallenge him, trust your stuff and hopefully
put the ball in play early andallow you to get through it. But
(33:20):
you know, if to look attheir lineup today, they did sprinkle the
lefties very strategically throughout their lineup,so it'd be a good challenge for him.
Tom Canzone comes back, what doeshe give you his return? Well,
he was swinging the bat really goodbefore he went down, and uh,
you know, Dom's got all kindsof power, but just good bats.
Well that's the biggest thing. Andyou know, I think he's found
something here just his ability to tunnelpitches. What we talked about earlier what
(33:45):
he where he's looking for balls. If he does get the ball on his
zone, big things happen. Butagain, I just want to get his
feet under him. A good dayto get him back out here. He's
ready to go. He's anxious toget out there and contribute anyway you can.
And Tom Canzon went on the injurylist back on April fifteenth with an
ac joint sprain, went down atTacoma. Was four for eleven down there
(34:06):
with a run, two doubles,an RBI and nine to sixty two ops.
When he was up this season beforehe got hurt with the Merricks.
Again, pretty limited sample size offourteen games, but he hit two nineteen
with seven runs scored, with double, three home run, six RBIs and
eight seventeen ops. All right, yep, prior to his injury. Take
that, and actually the numbers beforehe got hurt. In the ten games
(34:28):
before he got hurt, he washitting two ninety two with a double,
three home run, six RBIs anda one point seven to nine OPS.
So look at the recent example whatDom can Zone was doing, and he
was doing a lot better. SamHaggerty option back down to Triple A Tacoma.
The definition of a four, Afour a player in so many ways.
(34:51):
I mean, he was one forfifteen when he was up here for
Seattle. He did have a stolenbase, but just you know, hard
for him to kind of get goingthat one. I think Haggardy is a
guy that we kind of like becauseof the late inning ability to come in
and steal a base and pinch runand do those things. The defense plays
really good defense. But as soonas and JP Crawford's close to coming back,
(35:15):
sounds like he'll be back on theroad trip, So Dylan Moore kind
of becomes that guy again. AndHaggard he just no room for him right
now. So Brian move gets tostart. As he mentioned, hopefully knock
on wood, he stays healthy andis ready to go. Last season was
four and five, but really kindof showed a lot last year. So
all right, that's it. Mariner'scoming up later, Softy and Fantal recap

(38:10):
Valhalla, of course that some peoplelove and some people absolutely hate. Steve
Scheffleer or Scotti Scheffer is back.Where do you stand on Valhalla? Give
me? I gotta watch it again. It's been a while, okay,
I mean Rory won there in twentyfourteen. Okay, Yeah, there's people
that don't like it because of therough around the greens as opposed to shorter
(38:30):
trim. There's some that say it'skind of a blase a course. I
think it looks kind of fun.It does reward some longer hitters, all
maybe landing soft with some weather thisweek, amazing. The first two majors
might be impacted by weather like yetthey still don't want to come back here.
They still if now, if itwas PGA Championship was here this weekend.
(38:54):
Actually we actually decent golf weather.Yeah, like we kind of want
like a little warmer weather. Iwas just looking at the five day forecast
here, and if it was herethis week, it's perfectly fine. It's
probably pretty good. Yeah, itwould be probably pretty good. I bring
that up for I'll get why Ibring it up in a second. Let's
see Thursday, first day sixty one, partly cloudy, Friday sixty two,
(39:15):
partly cloudy, maybe some showers offand on on Saturday at fifty six,
but Sunday sixty degrees. I thinkthose guys would take that in a heartbeat.
Yeah, I mean I think theytake that on a heart. Couple
of clouds here and there. Butyou know, well, I mean it's
been what is it, twenty fifteen, so coming up on ten years since
we had the US Open here, and I still wow, that's crazy,
(39:35):
isn't it wild? It still bothersme because I think that Chambers Bay took
some unnecessary shots from people golfers, and you know, they people kind of
tend to forget that that Mike Davisand the USGA set up the golf course
and they dictated I mean, itwas a hot, dry week in the
middle of June, There's no doubtabout that. But they dictated what,
(39:59):
how, how, and they didin terms of watering and not watering the
greens. And yeah, the greensweren't in great shape, but that was
as much on the USGA. Itwas not on Chambers Bay. And there
was a great test of golf.It was a terrific test of golf.
And in the end it was aclose tournament. Yeah, yeah. And
if you look at who was incontention at the end, and the two
guys on the going to eighteen wereDustin Johnson and Jordan Speith, and Speith
(40:20):
was in the process of winning threeGrand Slam, three major tournaments in that
period of time, almost complete inthe career Grand Slam. He still got
to win this one. He's gotwin the PGA. But I mean he
was on a hommer. He wasa roll man. He was cruising and
he kind of fell often. He'sreally had some you know, it's funny.
He's still always I think he andjt or out of the top ten,
but they've all still they've He's stillhad great success. He just has
(40:44):
them been able to get over thehump and get that other major. It's
been a long time since he did. But yeah, every time I see
tournaments being hell, this one isbeing held in Kentucky. It's and they're
dealing with thunderstorms and weather and thingslike that. And obviously you're not going
to move the Masters. But yeah, the weather on the West Coast this
time of the year is pretty damngood like And you don't you never have
to worry about thunderstorms. Nope,no tornadoes, none of that. You
(41:05):
don't have to do. The horndoesn't blow because you've got lightning in the
area. We don't have that stuffout here. So we'll talk to Bobby
Casper about that coming up at twoo'clock. Take all right, So I'm
going to ask you this Anders andask our listeners four nine, four to
five one the Telemorty text line, when game time, it is totally time.
Where do you stand on it's afun word. We're soft e q
him. Where do you stand onon leaks? Leaks, schedule leaks?
(41:30):
Where do you stand? Are youall over them? Are you scouring social
media trying to find out exactly whenand where these games are being played?
To be honest, no, Ibecause we all know who the Seahawks are
playing, right, you know theirwhole schedule. I just don't know when
it is. I I'm not asinto that stuff. I like to see,
you know, maybe like when theirbye week is, so I can
plan my like schedule around it.Yes, and then hopefully that happens to
(41:53):
be the weekend of my wedding sothat people from this office are able to
come down. That'd be great, yes, But other than that, I
mean, like, I guess thefirst game is the only one that really
matters, and we already kind ofknow that one, and then yeah,
you know you're gonna play probably somedivision matchups later in the year, and
kind of everywhere else kind of fallswhere it goes. I heard Dick and
Safty talking about this is why bringingup I heard those guys talking about it
(42:15):
yesterday. I thought it was agreat conversation. And Dick said, like,
I just I want it all atonce. I don't need like this
the little ala carte. Here's aleak, there's a leak, and all
that. And I'm kind of fallin line with what Dick said, first
of all, trying to keep trackof it, understanding that I think Greg
said there was about thirty or fortypercent of the leak's last year were wrong
(42:37):
for the Seahawks. Really, yeah, and so I don't even remember.
I don't remember going and saying thatwas right, that was wrong, this
was wrong, this was right.I just I don't I don't remember that.
I don't remember having any right.I have no recollection of things being
right or wrong. I'll take Greg'sword on it and say, Okay,
so I'm not even gonna believe oranything I see. I know softy sources
are good, So if he tellsme something, I'm gonna believe those.
(42:59):
But and it's been confirmed by acouple other people. Yeah, but I
don't really, I don't really careoutside of what I do care about,
And this is a whole different conversation. Thursday night games. Yeah, if
indeed they have two Thursday night games, that's just garbage. Yeah, that's
just an absolute garbage space. Andthat's see. It used to be like,
oh, your prime time, that'sgreat, but it's all the terrible
(43:21):
games. Terrible. Yeah, andplaying Thursday, I just it's a for
the players. Everyone's required to playone Thursday game. And honestly, that's
what it should be Yeah, everyoneplays one, it should be the one,
and you should be one and done. And instead, like Seattle last
year, played back to back Thursdays. Remember they played, they played Thanksgiving
(43:44):
and then they played Dallas in Dallasthe next week, right, and I
just it was brutal, and eventhough they had the rest in between and
then you get the time off. This one looks like if they if the
leaks are right, I'm not goingto go through them. All those guys
do it at five o'clock. Butthat's right. Then the Seahawks will have
two weeks, as Greg was pointingout earlier, in which they have four
(44:04):
days of rest between games. That'swrong, that's wrong. Last year you
could live with it because you hadthe seven days in between. Yeah,
and then you have the long breakafter and then but the first one you
only have the one four days.If you truly do that where it's four
days in between, it's just messedup. Well, maybe it's five weeks
in between them or something like that. Yeah, yeah, it could be
if that's the case. But Ihate I think Thursdays. I think it.
(44:25):
First of all, when you dohave a Thursday game, everyone plays
one. You shouldn't have to playtwo. I mentioned this yesterday. I'll
say it till I until I'm deadand buried. You've got to think of
the fan bases as well. Yep. And fan bases like to travel,
fan bases like to go. Ithink you just need to think of the
fan base a little bit. Anda Thursday game is hard to get to
(44:47):
if it's not if it's if it'sa road game, if it's a home
game, it's kind of a coolvibe. You play Thursday. It's wild.
It's the night doesn't change, andyour night games are fun. And
hey, by the way, shoutout to Prime Electric. I'll tell you
more about the those guys soon.Local company. They did the new lights
Atlumenfield like last year. Remember thefirst night game. It was awesome.
It was awesome, like the atmosphereand what they did, what they can
do with the lights now, turningthem on off, the different colors.
(45:09):
It was cool. That's even morefun if it's a Sunday night game or
a Monday night game. Thursday isa Thursday, baby, I just don't
like it. But that aside andthe players getting out of side. The
other thing. A Wednesday Christmas gamenow Seattle doesn't have those. The Wednesday
Christmas Games, they have announced thisChiefs and Steelers Ravens Texans. Okay,
(45:30):
so it's Chiefs and Steelers Ravens Texans. Chief Steelers is at ten ten o'clock
in the morning and then Ravens Texansis at four at one thirty in the
morning. I always have to getthe et PT Eastern times Pacivic time.
I'm like, Cosell. He can't, Cosell. We have to give them
Eastern time. I got to tellpeople the story. This is good,
(45:51):
so great, Coseell. We haveone every time when I text him or
email and I say, hey,you know, we're doing our story.
We're taping, and we tape Gregbeforehand. He's really busy. And I
always have to give the time anEastern time zone because I made the mistake
years ago. I said, yeah, well we'll get you. I'll tape
you, like at eleven o'clock inthe morning, eleven am. And it
was like, where are you AndI said, We're doing it in three
(46:15):
hours. It goes all you saideleven, I said, well, that's
my time. Craig doesn't operate.Greg is like almost everybody on the East
coast in the sense that he doesn'tthink there's another time. So it's the
Eastern time zone and that's the onlytimes on. So now I'm looking at
the Chief Steelers. A great game, I mean Russ Russ losing to Mahomes
(46:36):
again or justin fields starting by thenwe'll see, oh he would be he
might he for sure will right,it should be by then, and then
the afternoon game is a great game. I mean, that's a that's a
fantastic games. Yeah, Ravens Texasis a good game, and and Texans
are good. Ravens are good. That's good. But man, Wednesday like
(46:59):
a Wednesday football game. I'm notready for the mac being played in the
NFL. You know what, Ijust realized that's going to screw up our
factor fiction again. Your factor fictionis all messed up, and it is
all messed up because of this Christmascrap Christmas game on a Wednesday, Boxing
Day or whatever. The twenties. Are we done by? We're done by
that, aren't we? Are wedone? Are no January? Do we
(47:22):
go like week seventeeneen or week fifteen? I think week fifteen? Yeah,
what week is that? I don'tknow. I have to look ahead.
But it does well. I thinkfactor fiction should have come into play for
these guys, whether they're not thinkingof you or what. I don't know,
that's wrong, I guess not.But Wednesday games bad. Netflix is
the interesting one. Yeah, andthat's the kind of the question I have
for people. Is this because wetalked about this yesterday with the CW with
(47:43):
the Coogs and the beavers and whatyou have. So now to watch NFL
games, you will have to haveFox, CBS, ESPN, NBC.
Okay, those four the four originals. Yeah, you also have to have
(48:04):
Netflix, Peacock Prime, Amazon Prime, and ESPN Plus has a game as
well. Maybe it's a playoff gameor something like ESPN Plus exclusive. Yes,
oh g yes, we'll find thatout officially later. But Albert Breer
was reporting that earlier. So whatis that. That's eight different networks that
you have to have access to.Yeah, and granted a lot of those
(48:24):
are bundled together in some things theyare they like, but not all Like
Peacock, you have to pay forright, Netflix, what percentage of people
do you think have that you know, have Netflix? I think it's just
below Amazon Prime is probably the secondmost popular streaming service. Yeah, that
is what I would guess. It'sa it's ahead of Hulu, it's ahead
of Apple, right, because it'skind of more of an original. Yeah,
(48:45):
and they you know, they're they'redipping their toes into the into the
live sports, you know waters.Yeah, and I maybe it's probably won't
happen this year, but I wouldn't. I wouldn't be surprised if HBO slash
Max gets involved in this sometime soon. They're involved with what Turner. Yeah,
so that's where you're watching some NBAor NHL playoffs right now exactly through
Max. Yes, okay, butyeah, I mean I saw people complaining
(49:07):
about it today, like oh nowI gotta get Netflix or I got to
get this. I'm like, well, don't most of you guys already have
those streaming services? Yeah? WellPrime Prime is the obvious one. Like
a lot of people have Amazon Prime. So if you have Prime, you're
able to get the Thursday night games, So you should be good there.
Yeah. I think the NFL,and this is where the conversation turns to
college football. The NFL people becauseof fantasy football, because of outside of
(49:34):
our I mean our state. Socall me Casino See's closest sportsbook. You
can wager at the tribal casinos forsporting events in our state, but most
states also have Most states not namedWashington have fan duel DraftKings what have you
in the palm of your hand.So because of the the increased ability to
wager on games both you know,on your phone or where have you or
(49:59):
even casino, I think there's sucha great interest in the NFL and the
limited number of games that that arein the NFL every week, and especially
to get to end the year, there's sixteen, but if bye week it's
like down to thirteen or twelve.I think people will always pay to watch
the NFL. The question you haveis what will you pay for? What
will you not pay for it?Well, and I guess I'll ask that
question right now. Will you payfor watching if you don't have one of
(50:21):
those services? Will you pay towatch the NFL if your team's not on
it? In other words, ifit is, if it's a Seahawks,
and we, like most fans, will probably find a way to get it.
Here's the thing with the Seahawks.I believe this is still the case.
I'll double check it that if yourteam is playing in your market,
the game will be broadcast over theyear, even if it's the ESPN Plus
(50:43):
exclusive. Often they I think Peacockin the playoffs might be the different might
be the exception, but regular season, what they do is they put them
out for bids. So if there'sa on the cable, so if it's
on Amazon, like we carried theAmazon game last year on Fox and Monday
Night Football goes up for bid.I think Como carried it. Who they
(51:05):
played Monday Night last year? Wasit the forty nine ers maybe? Or
though that was that was the Thanksgivinggame was Anyway, they those games that
are not broadcast TV, Amazon andESPN specifically, they go up for bid
in the market and any local broadcastentity and usually you know Como, Slash
Fox, sometimes King, but usuallyComo and Fox will go after those and
try to get those games. Soyou don't have to do that. The
(51:28):
question is if, and we couldjust use ease, you got Ravens Texans
and you don't have Netflix, areyou paying for that right for a month
or whatever? It would be oneESPN Plus playoff game? Are you getting
ESPN Plus? So did you dolike them? There's the one game on
Peacock last year, Like I Ithink I still had Peacock or I just
signed up for it and then Iturfed it or something or something. Yeah,
(51:49):
but I I wanted to watch it. So I mean, I'm I'm
a captive audience. I'm exactly. But I've also fallen exactly into the category
of where the NFL wants you tobe. The NFL wants you to go
out and rute, and they notso much the NFL the network partners want
you to go out there and thenwhat they hope you do. And this
is where the MLS. You broughtthis up for, This is where the
MLS just screwed up. Stupid. You sign up for it, and you
(52:12):
know what you do? You forgetabout it. Yeah, honest to goodness,
how often do you sign up forsomething and just forget about it afterwards?
And that's what happened. You knowa lot of times. It's what
the MLS should have done with thewith the Apple deal, just maybe Apple
slightly increases their rate a couple bucksa month across the board. Everyone's watching,
is it Ted Lasso? What's onon Apple? You know? Foundation
(52:37):
when you increase your fees on astreaming service and it's it's a nominal amount,
but it adds up, but it'sa nominal amount, nobody notices.
And then if all of a suddenyou do that and you've got it on
there and you sign up to I'mgonna watch one you know, I'm gonna
watch one Stundard game. But I'mnot signing up for the whole season.
I'm just signing up for the Applesubscription. That's what the networks are hoping
you do. That's what Peacock is, Slash, NBC Universal, That's what
(52:58):
they hope you do with that. They hope you kind of do all those
things as well. The other thingsyou look forward to schedule, like if
you want to travel, which gamesyou want to go to, but you
already know which games to go to. The problem is is if it's like
I think Chicago, Chicago's a Thursdaygame the day after Christmas, that sucks
because that's a fun city. Ilove that city. I think it's one
of the best season in America, fun team to go watch. PFF just
said, I hate this, drivesme insane. PFF just said they have
(53:22):
the best wide receiving room in thein the NFL. I'll get to that
maybe at one thirty today because Ihad to text Palasolo. I haven't heard
back from Judge that without even tohave like half of them play a snap
in the NFL. And how doyou say that when you have I'll just
give you this. I don't evenknow who the third receiver is off the
(53:42):
top of my head, but forthe Rams, like if I take Seattle
out of it for a second, okay, okay, just like let's take
Seattle out of it. Yeah, but I'm sorry Roman Dune say you haven't
caught it past the NFL. No, and who's'll probably be awesome? Yeah,
you can't say that. So Lockettmetcalf Off JSN. That should be
number one, honestly, or wouldyou go deebo ay Yuk Jennings Third one
(54:10):
is a pretty big drop off,I think. But he looked pretty good
when when when Ay got hurt.Yeah he did. Or I'll just take
two and I don't care who numberthree is. Nikua and Cooper Cup Cooper
cut missed over half of last year. But if he's healthy, like we
know what he can do and PookaNikua damn good? Right, that's true.
But to Chicago, that go backto Chicago. That's a trip I
(54:31):
would think people would want to make. Unfortunately, day after Christmas you're not
going to probably do that. Likelast year, the best trip for an
opposing fan to make in the NFL, I think we'll get to Lambo in
other places. Sure is Nashville.Yeah, and the Seahawks played on flipping
Christmas Eve, the best game ofthe year for a road game, and
that's where they play. It feelslike they're getting kind of hooped here.
(54:52):
Maybe I'm wrong, It feels likethey're kind of getting hooped a little bit,
not just with the Thursday games, with some of the travel games as
well. So four nine, fourto five one. That is a tut
text line. When it's game time, it is time. I want you
guys are fire away? What willyou pay for? As far as the
NFL is concerned, what will Where? Do you draw the line in the
sand? All? Right? Areyou like, Hey, if it's on
CBS, NBC, and Fox,I'm all in outside of that or ESPN
(55:15):
or even if you have a lotof those already, how many of those
are just because you want to watchNFL? Right? Did you get last
year because you wanted to watch whatwill happen with I mean Netflix is going
to get a bump. Yeah, like Netflix will get a big bump.
Absolutely, that's that's going to bea bump. And I'm trying to think,
like Netflix, now we have it. We feels like Netflix is the
(55:36):
one you've had forever. Yeah,it's almost like cable TV. It's just
been a part of the staple ofyour world, probably the first tram right,
correct. But they're going to geta bump from a lot of people,
especially people my age and older thathaven't had it, right like I
got we got it because the kids. Yeah, like we gotta get Netflix,
gotta get Netflix on What the hell'sNetflix? You know? However many
years ago we got it easy orderwhat Yeah, what about you know,
(55:58):
red Box or whatever the hell thatis? You know, I mean,
why can't we just use those guysalong the way? What do you need
Netflix for? But Netflix actually isgood. There's a lot of TV,
old TV shows stuff on there. You have a lot of old TV shows
and things like that on there, and they're you know, they're a little
series they do on It's not likeoutside the Lines, but kind of like
that one on Donna Hey and otherone and if you have a significant other
like my wife, that just like, oh, we haven't watched this in
(56:19):
like two months, so we're gettingrid of it, like just just without
even telling me, like, no, we're not using it. What My
wife has no idea where that stuffwe went through. We did a purge.
We did a cleanse. Okay, and this is about a year ago.
We did a cleanse to see likewhat did we have and what did
we not right? What do youuse? What? And what do we
use? Yeah? And I thinkwe got rid of Hulu, and I
(56:40):
think we got rid of Apple TV. And then I think I ended up
getting Apple back to watch a Marinergame. Yeah, and then and then
you know what I did, I'dnever cancel it. I still I still
have it, So that could bethe case. A sorry. Four want
to hear from you guys, fournine, four to five one. Glory
Deavarus was on with this earlier kindof recaps some of the things she had
to say, and then I'll tellyou about PFF and how wrong they are
(57:00):
Palos. Although that's next live fromthe R and R Foundation Specialists broadcast studio
back to Ian Furnantz, powered bySeattle's closest sports book, snowp call me
Casino on Sports Radio ninety three pointthree kJ R FM. Yeah, we'll
(57:24):
get to text later, but onequick one before we move on. A
lot of people texting in on youknow what you're gonna buy and what you're
not gonna buy is the NFL schedulecomes out. Kathleen says, we live
out of state, we pay forcable, Netflix, Amazon, NFL Sunday
ticket. We would not be withoutSunday ticket. We would never see a
Hawks game. Plus we can watchall of our rival games. It's an
(57:44):
interesting take because I did see somepeople today on social media complaining about,
hey man, I'm paying for Sundayticket that's already through the roof. Yes,
But then when they're spat when they'resmattering games all over the rest of
the week, especially late in theseason, when you start adding some Saturday
games, especially when you have twoWednesday games on Christmas, et cetera,
(58:07):
then your Sunday ticket package becomes alot less valuable. On top of that.
But now, unless you're out ofstate like Kathleen, and I know
this because because when I lived inSalt Lake City, I paid for we
had direct TV with the sole reasonthat I would get the Sunday ticket with
the sole reason to watch the Seahawks, right, because otherwise i'dn't be watching
(58:29):
whatever BYU quarterback was playing, becausethat's what they showed in Salt Lake every
week. And so it was reallyor yeah, I mean or Scott Scott
Mitchell was playing quarterback for the Lionsor something, so I didn't watch that
because he's a Utah guy. Butno, that's that's what it is.
So yeah, the Sunday ticket waslike for people like Kathleen or for me,
like it's invaluable if you live awayfrom your team and your team,
(58:53):
I mean, you're just not goingto see the most of the time,
right, And Luckily in Portland,I never had to worry about that.
There was a time where Portland didthis weird thing where they were voting on
you know what game to watch andtechnically well and it was I think it
was I don't know it's a Foxaffiliated who it was, but it's trying
to say like, hey, weshould have all the detroit lyon games on
because of Joey Harrington when he gotdrafted number one, and people were like
(59:15):
loving Joey loving them from Joey quarterback. Yes, and but the TV numbers
told you that people cared more aboutwatching the Seahawks. It's a Seahawk market.
Yeah. The second highest rated I'msorry, the third highest rated television
market in the country for the SuperBowl with the Steelers and the Seahawks was
Portland. Yeah, it was numbertwo. And I think that was a
(59:36):
case three years ago. Boston,Seattle, Portland. So yeah, anyway,
we'll get to those textwaighter four nine, four to five one on the
Tullamore do text line when it's gametime. Oh, you know, it
is totally as I do too.Right now, Hey, I brought this
up with PFF. This is kindof the schedule. Stuf's coming out later,
Softy and Dick will be on theair at five o'clock. They got
an hour pre game of an hourshow on the radio. Talking about the
(59:59):
schedule. We're do the same thing, by the way, on TV on
Fox thirteen at five o'clock to day. It must be a big deal because
we're blowing out an hour newscast andwe never do that. I mean,
listen, there are homeless encampment storiesand protests that you dubbed to cover,
and we're not doing that for anhour today. So I'm telling you right
now, the NFL schedule is theking of all media, yes, because
(01:00:20):
for us to blow those things off, man, I mean, as we
speak, there's a protest going onsomewhere and a homeless camp sweep taking place
and we're not covering it. There'sprobably a whale story as well as be
going on today. I'm sure wegot a whale story and one of our
whale girls is doing that today andeverything else as part of that. Jess
was part of the whales for awhile. She was actually actually when Jess
was our producer on TV for aTV producer, she was actually in charge
(01:00:45):
of COVID of all right, shedid all things COVID fun. Yeah,
yeah, pretty uplifting. I'm reallystunned she didn't stick with, you know,
this whole thing of television at thatpoint. Yeah, you know,
like, what was your experience atTV as executive producer for Fox thirteen News?
What were we in charge of COVIDcoverage? And you didn't find that
enjoyable? You didn't find that likefun? Every day you want to get
(01:01:07):
sports then you can't. It wasso bad she came back to this stupid
format is what she did. I'mnuts she did have it. Actually she
did have a stop in between. She worked for the health director and the
government down in Olympia. That reallychased her back. Covid more covid back
to sports radio. I'm good. And now she's down there at thirteen coins
(01:01:27):
eating lunch with the sales stuff.Yeah, how are we doing with that
today? I looked at I keeplooking out there saying, I'm sure they're
going to send us food right now? Can you stop mentioning that because I'm
hungry. I'm gonna drink my poacheindrinking a second I mentioned PFF earlier.
Well, so we'll save the schedulestuff the rest of the day for Softy
and fan. They can do thatfor you guys later on, or you
can watch TV tonight as well, five o'clock on Fox thirteen. PFF did
this. I don't get caught upon it. All that off in the
(01:01:51):
list world, the world of lists, lists, lists, Let me top
five, top five, top timeand all that stuff. Although I do
find this, like I'm doing onetomorrow for TV in the morning, Like
we got like top places to govisit watching the NFL and the Seahawks on
the road. So I do so. Now I say that, but I
but you indulgent in it. Well, I was asked to do it,
so you know, but this onecaught my attention because you know, we
(01:02:13):
love our guy Palazolo and PFF,we have him on all the time pre
drafting season, does a great job. We like him. This wasn't his.
Let me see who actually wrote thisstory. Maybe it was a culmination.
Uh, let's see. Oh JohnCostco. Okay, so it wasn't
Palazolo, so I'll give him abreak. But PFF ranked the strongest and
weakest position groups after free agency andthe twenty twenty four NFL Draft. Now
(01:02:37):
I'm going to tell you this rightnow. The first thing I did,
the very first thing I did,was go to offensive line to see if
Seattle was like the worst, right, because that they were arguably one of
the bottom three offensive lines the lastcouple of years for the draft. But
we can thank our friends the NewYork Giants for that. They are the
worst. Yeah, that sounds aboutright. They had the worst offensive line
(01:03:00):
of any team in twenty twenty three. Can you imagine being a Giants fan
and guess what, they did nothingin the off season to improve it.
Yeah, so they're going to hopeAndrew Thomas is healthy. They're gonna hope
John Runyon, who's eight thousand yearsold, and a couple other guys can
help him. Detroit has the bestoffensive line and we saw that up close,
and we're going to see that againthis year. But that sounds like
(01:03:20):
it might be a Monday night gamewith Seattle there. So that was the
first thing I looked at to seeif Seattle was on that list. But
this is what caught my attention. And I should not be the guy.
I'm going to be a hypocritics like. I don't care what people say with
lists and stuff, but I thinkwhen they're wrong, it should be pointed
out. Yeah, wide receivers nowthe weakest wide receiver group, New England
Patriots. So does it only saythe top in the bottom, Yes,
(01:03:44):
it doesn't say the full Yes,strongest and weakest weakest wide receiver group,
New England Patriots. Good luck there, great may, good luck, the
best, the best one. Now, you already told you what it is.
But if you were, if Iwas, if I hadn't told you
because you were kind of guessing, and who would you have guessed? The
Bears? First of all, they'renumber one. Yeah, I know,
(01:04:06):
who would you have guessed? II honestly think that Seahawks have a shout
for sure. I kind of thinkwe all think that in the city that
the Seahawks probably have as good widereceiver room, if not the best in
the league you'll find. I canmake some arguments elsewhere, but it's the
Chicago Bears, DJ Moore, Keenan, and they just kind of go with
(01:04:29):
the top three guys DJ Moore,Keenan Allen, and roam a Doneesday.
So I understand DJ Moore's got anice upside. Yeah, he always kind
of feels to me like a careerunderachiever, Like people want to take shots
at DK saying you should be better. I think DJ Moore is is far
inferior, far inferior. I mean, I'd take DK Metcalf over DJ Moore
(01:04:53):
all day and every day. Ifyou just want to go buy sides,
I'd take Tyler Lockett over DJ Mooreall day and every day. The biggest
hevers Keenan Allen. Okay, well, our guy stays healthy. Keenan Allen
feels like he had justin Herbert throwingto him. I didn't I looked,
and so I didn't see the Allpros next to his name, But that
guy throwing next to him out halfof every year exactly. So those two
(01:05:15):
jump out and Roma Dunze is probablygoing to be a really nice NFL wide
receiver, we think, we assume, but we don't know. He hasn't
done anything yet. Like, howwould you pick those guys and that group
which Seattle will see this season,by the way, and reportedly the day
after Christmas on December twenty sixth, how would you take that group and put
them ahead of the three guys herein Seattle and JSN. This is almost
(01:05:40):
like the dom canzone splits. Lookat JSN the last half of the season,
like dom Canzone the last ten daysbefore he got hurt, the last
half of the season for JSN,different player. So it happens halfway three
rookie years start to figure some thingsout and on third and whatever. I'll
take Tyler Lockett all day, everyday over almost anybody in the league.
Cooper Cup would be the exception acouple other guys, But I mean,
(01:06:00):
I'm taking I'm taking Tyler Lockett justmakes first down catches and finds himself open,
and yeah, people will criticize him, maybe goes down, what have
you. Hey, man, I'lltake I'll take a healthy Tyler Lockett over
the extra two yards unless it's forfirst down all day, every day.
But yeah, that one jumps out. I think San Francisco is better.
Yeah, I agree, I meanI think And when you include white now
it's wide receivers. They had aseparate one for tight ends. But if
(01:06:23):
we're just looking at receiving groups, you give me Kittle Ayuk and Samuel Throwing
Jennings, and that's a better group, not even close. I'd still take
Seahawks over them, but I wouldtake them over Chicago. Yeah, I
mean, yeah, your number threeisn't as good as Seattle's. Number three
is probably what you're saying at thatpoint. Maybe the number one is better.
(01:06:45):
Yeah, number one is probably better. Number one slash two, one
A and one B, whatever itmight be. Yeah, that might be
as well. And again I'll goback Cup and Cup and Nakua like and
who cares who number three is.Yes, you can say the same thing
about Cup as Keenan Allen though ishe's been pretty banged last couple of years,
but feels like when he's healthy,he's he's just he's he's more productive.
Like he's more productive, he getsmore done along the way. So
(01:07:08):
anyway, that's my that's my ranttoday for pff off the tell Palas although
I ripped on him, but that'sfine. I'm sure he'll be looking forward
to that. Well, then youknow what he does. This is what
he does. Well, I didn'twrite that, but let's see my guy
and then he'll do this, likelet me see who wrote it, like
he knows, Yeah he does, let me see who wrote? Oh,
John wre I like John's work,but you know I can. I might
(01:07:29):
disagree with a couple of things yougive. Okay, I'll take a break.

M. I was a misspoker. It is one game in the National Hockey
League tonight. Rangers aren't Oh yeah, oh Dallas Colorado's not tonight. No,
Dallas, Colorado's tonight. I thinkI said the Rangers are playing.
Oh gotcha got anway? Yeah,it's just one game tonight. H Dallas
hosting the Colorado Avalanche. That gametonight, five o'clock. Going head to
(01:09:03):
head with the NFL schedule release.Fun small move anyway, they played a
night at five Pacific time. Coloradois facing the elimination. They trail that
series three games to one. TheLenon Miko Rantin and who's got eleven points
in ten games career in elimination games. Guy steps up big time. Six
(01:09:23):
of those, by the way,we're goals. So like we saw him
up close in personal last year,he's a pretty monthster year too. Yeah,
pretty good player, pretty good player. But Dallas can knock him out
tonight. Wya Johnson can do histhing and get going. But we'll see
how it works out. But yeah, so the the one game tonight in
the National Hockey League. Last nightin the NHL, A couple of games
(01:09:44):
in the playoffs that we want tohit on. We'll hit on the second
one in a moment. Boston staysalive. They go to Florida, win
two to one the final there,Jeremy Swayman was great, like always,
well, not like always, gotchased a couple times, but he was
great. Panthers. Now, I'llstill leave the series three games to two,
butts. Butts, they have togo back to Boston for Game six.
(01:10:09):
Meanwhile, up in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Incredible game last night,
I mean absolutely incredible game last nightVancouver and Edmonton. They played their
fourth one goal game out of fourgames so far in the series, three
to two the final, Edmonton getsthe win. Yes, they score late
(01:10:31):
go ahead goal with thirty eight secondsleft. That came after Vancouver tied the
game with one forty one left toplay eighteen to nineteen. Mark Dakota Joshua
scored an empty natter. It kindof went off a defenseman for Edmonton.
Nevertheless, he gets credit for thegoal. Tied it too late. Edmonton
scores with thirty eight seconds left totie the series at two games apiece.
(01:10:55):
They head back to Vancouver for Gamefive in that series. Why did I
save that one for last? Becauseof this? Rick Talckett is a head
coach of the Vancouver Canucks. Ithink a lot of times as a fan,
you want to hear a coach kindof call guys out. Make guys
accountable, Yeah, make guys underyou know, like like you as a
(01:11:17):
fan, or like man so andso was bad, or so and so
just didn't look like they gave effort. The worst thing you can do as
an athlete is be perceived as someonethat's not giving effort. Right, Well,
that's kind of what Rick Talckets sawfrom his Vancouver Canucks team. Here's
tacket post game. Well, it'sa will to get the puck. It's
not excell to os, it's awill. There's there's you know, there's
(01:11:39):
times there we have some guys thatyou know the puck where it's going to
go. You just got to getthere before the other guy. I think
we're pausive. Some guys are playingpause hockey, and you can't win if
you have five or six passengers verseseven. I don't know how many of
us. Well, we'll take alook at, but there's at least half
a dozen just passengers tonight, youknow, quite frankly, that's what it
(01:11:59):
was. But saying that that's playoffhockey where the next game is a new
game. So some of those guyscan be a hero for us. So
they got to step it up.I absolutely love that sound bite. I
too, I love that sound bite. And he like he didn't fully throw
him under the bus. He wasn'tlike, oh they were awful, Like
what because guys followed up and askedand asked him questions about There were some
(01:12:20):
guys that followed up and asked like, hey, you know, is it
he's talking about? And then theymentioned they mentioned guys by name, and
he did talk about guys. Someguys that like EP forty having to be
better. Yeah, what I lovewhen the coach is critical and calls guys
out publicly without embarrassing them and really, like you said, without it,
without making their they know. Yeah, everyone in their room knows well.
(01:12:44):
And the other thing, he putsit in perspective like, hey, like
next game, they could be thehero for us because he needs them to
be like he needs some of thoseguys. He needs them to step up
and be better. Yea, butyeah, there are some true passengers right
now. When you're generating right aroundtwenty shots on goal game, there's some
guys that are doing well on yourown end. Shout out by the way.
Calvin Picker, thirty two years old, Sir Edmonton Oilers goalie gets his
(01:13:08):
first ever playoffs start, his firstever playoff win. Didn't get beat by
a clean shot last night. BothVancouver goals were deflections. He played really
well. I don't know why there'speople can having conversations, well should they
go back to him? Yeah?Yeah, yes, I'm not impressive.

(01:13:29):

Bobby in a few minutes. Themind's messed up, because if that happens,
mentally, you are done. Soshout out to the former t Bird
Calvin Picker getting the win last night. A thirty two year old journeyman.
He's played on ten different teams thanthe NHL. He was drafted by the
Colorado Avalanche out of the Western HockeyLeague out of Seattle, and he's been
on ten teams in hockey. Man, it's crazy. One other note,
(01:13:53):
thirty two Thought podcast with Jeff Merrickand Elliott Friedman. Friedman, who's a
pretty good insider in the National HockeyLeague. See the athletic guy. He's
on sports NETC. He has thethree guys that see the Kraken are looking
at right now as in no particularorder here, Dan Bilsma, Todd McClellan
(01:14:15):
or assistant coach Jay Leech also saysthere's some disagreement on the inside who the
Kraken should hire, which is that'san interesting thing. Well, that may
be why they'd taken a little bithere a Brenda Morson on that list r
B. Why is McClellan on that, Why would they but as he said,
there's disagreement, So then my questionwould be, well, who's disagreeing
(01:14:38):
with who? Because you have aGM, who would have the final say?
I would think yeah. But ifthere's disagreement, who's disagreeing with Ron
Francis? Is it ownership? IsTodd involved? Is Victor de Bonus involved?
I don't know, it's I thinkthat's an interesting I wonder if the
(01:15:00):
those guys stepped in, because Ihere's think Wiki knows hockey, Victor Debonos,
who's the president, he knows hockey, And I wonder if those guys
stepped in and said, listen,we have to have X and Y in
or new not telling them who thecoach would be right, but maybe we
need the profile of one that wewould style of play, personality, what
the team's going to like look like. Is a guy that can handle and
(01:15:21):
deal with the media in a betterway than Hackstall did. Like that bar,
that bar. Not that he wasa gong show, as one would
say, but it's just so closeto the vest, and especially for a
growing franchise in a market. Hejust didn't sell the team. No,
(01:15:43):
he did not at all. AndI don't know. I guess you'd make
the argument that's not his job asan HL coach, but I think it
is his job in a new market, I think it. Yeah, I
think every market's different. If you'rein if you're in Vancouver, Winnipeg,
any Canadian markets, you just needto win. You don't need to sell
the team. If you're the Bruinshead coach. Jim Montgomery doesn't need to
sell the Bruins. You know,Jared Bednar doesn't have to sell the Colorado
(01:16:04):
Avalanche to their fan base. Thisis a new market. That's a love
Jared Bednard. Yeah, be kindthe Mike. He's great, he's really
good, very good. But youdon't. But you know, de Boor
doesn't have to sell the Dallas fanson it, right, But you kind
of need to sell your fan baseon things here, especially if you're not
going to play an exciting brand ofhockey. I mean, I listen,
Hackstall, give him a break. The first year, second year, they
(01:16:27):
probably overachieved with the high, highshooting percentage. Last year they regress back
to probably the norm, to behonest with you, yep, and his
style of play just it just wasn'tworking last year. Yeah, all right,

Majors week in golf. Ladies andgentlemen. It is time for a major.
There's four of them a year. When that happens, we call one
guy, my buddy, Bobby Caspermet him back in Salt Lake back in
(01:19:54):
the day. That was before SaltLake had a National Hockey League team.
Bobby Casper Real Golf Radio joins usright now on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline.
Hello, sir, how you doingthe end? I'm good doing okay,
we're doing okay. How are youdoing? My friend? You know,
I'm doing good, except im nursinga little bit of a cold, so
my my voice is a little deepright now. But how about that?
(01:20:15):
We got a hockey team? Yeah? What's it? Was? It pretty
holl' is it down? There? Are people pretty excited for the NHL to
come to Salt Lake? Yeah?I think they are, you know,
and it's interesting because they're pushing prettyhard to get an mob team too,
and so it'll be interesting. Youknow, Guys like Dale Murphy and everybody
(01:20:35):
are all on the all on thisbig Committee and and uh as you know,
you know, the everything that's goneon with sport and basketball and everything,
and now trying to get an moB team as well. So it's
awesome. It's going to be prettycool what happens straight growing market. I
(01:20:58):
love my time there and I'm thrilledfor the fans down there. They get
another major league sports franchise. Theygot the MLS, NBA obviously with the
Jazz. Now you had an HLteam, and who knows the I MLB
would be. They'd be wise togo down Their weather's great in the summer
down there. It'd be fantastic.Bobby Casper joining US Real Golf Radio Major
number two. The PGA Championship usedto be later, used to be later
(01:21:18):
in the summer. What why againdo they move it to Yeah? Why
did they move it? Why didthey move from August to May? Well,
they moved it. They moved itbecause it was gonna fall in line
with the Olympics and that kind ofthing with golf becoming a venue in the
Olympics, and so they moved itback to May. So it goes,
(01:21:39):
it goes Masters, PGA, USOpen, British Open. That's the end
of the major season. Then you'vegot the Olympics every four years in the
summer, Olympics and golf, andthen the Players Championship is in September.
So yeah, it's just I thinkit was to make a space for that
(01:22:00):
because you know, the best playersfrom all the countries that are playing on
the PGA and the European Tour andthat kind of thing. The guys in
the end that are the best inthe world rankings and suffering to be the
guys that are playing in the event. All right, that makes sense,
Bobby Cass. We're joining us PGAChampionship. We'll go through the field in
a second, and what to expectthe weather in Kentucky of Vahalla, it
may not be great. But beforewe let's talk about the course itself.
(01:22:24):
I've I've listened to a few peoplethis week and it feels like it's kind
of a mixed bag. And thisis you know, I guess let me
start with this. What is whatdoes the layout or what do people like?
What does the PGA want in aPGA Championship course, What do they
look for in a PGA Championship course, Like places like Congressional and others have
(01:22:44):
hosted for a while La was Ididn't like it at all. It was
like boring. There's like no fansout there. It's kind of weird.
US Open, Yes, But what'sthe PGA. What does PGA look for
in a tournament in a course?I think they're looking for a golf course
that's pretty traditional and as far asgolf is concerned, of course that Carrie
Haig, who is who sets upall the major championships for the PGA of
(01:23:09):
America, that he can work with. This is a course that they've had
four other events at three PGA Championships. This will be the fourth and a
Ryder Cup. They've added some distanceto it. It's very similar, but
yet it is a big golf course. It's they'll tip it out at seventy
(01:23:30):
six hundred yards this week and guys, guys aren't going to be able to
finesse themselves around this golf course. They're going to have to pull up driver
every hole where where they're that's nota part three. And they're going to
have to get themselves in the fairwaybecause the rough is very lush and the
ball sits down. But yet ifthey hit it in the fairway, they're
(01:23:53):
going to have a great lie becausethey redid the grass in the fairway and
redid it to a grass called zoo. And if you don't know about zoyja,
it's a grass that the ball sitsup really really high on. You
don't get bad lives with zoija, and so you know you can you can
score really well off of that typeof grass. And that's around the greens
(01:24:15):
too. And then the vent greens, as Jordan Spi said, are phenomenal.
They are perfect, they're pure. You're gonna see a lot of guys
make putts. But like you saidearlier, with the weather, with rain
early in the week, with raincoming on Friday and Saturday, you're gonna
see a lot of good scoring opportunitiesbecause these guys are the best in the
(01:24:35):
world and they know how to throwdarts and they can get any flag when
the greens are soft enough. BobbyCasper joining US Real Golf Radio, Real
Goolfradio dot Com. I'll tell youmore about that at the end of our
segment here looking ahead to the PGAChampionship which begins tomorrow Valhalla in Kentucky and
Kentucky. The thing I've all youtalked about the seventy six hundred and the
(01:24:56):
length one of the things. Andis it a European Now, let me
take a step back. I've reada couple of things say what they're trying
to do is put you know, some longer clubs in guys hands on that
second shot. Like in other words, like these guys are so used to
just banging balls and they've got youknow, they're one hundred and forty or
(01:25:17):
or closer in it's wedge to thegreen all the time. They don't use
all the globes in their bag.It feels is it more of an American
versus European thing to have that? And I guess what I had heard is
like, well, the Europeans theylike to you know, they they want
to see a guy with a youknow, with a five iron or a
six iron in his hand more often. Yeah, I think you're exactly right,
(01:25:41):
you know, Tiger said when hewon here in two thousand, okay,
first hole, he had a driveand a pitching wedge into the green.
Or no, it was a driveand a lob wedge into the green.
Okay he came. Of course,Tiger's older now, but they've liked
him that hole. Now, hehit a driving a five wood yesterday yesterday.
(01:26:01):
So what they want to do isthey want to get guys hitting more
mid irons and that requires longer distance. Now, when the golf ball gets
rolled back a little bit, youknow, you know, another ten twelve
percent, that kind of thing, then some of those show holes they can
take advantage of some more of theteas on the golf course. But they're
(01:26:24):
trying to keep the guys for notjust hitting wedges in everywhere. They want
them to hit more mid irons tolong irons into a lot of these holes.
And that's kind of the way thegolf course is set up right now.
Zoysa is interesting because you don't geta lot of roll with Zoyja.
The ball hits in the fairway andit checks up. It's a sticky grass.
(01:26:44):
So that's not going to promote whenthey if the golf course is moist,
it's going to promote hitting longer clubsinto the green complexes, and that's
going to make it a little bitmore difficult. I'll be honest with you,
Bobby, I kind of like that. I want to see a guy
with a longer club in his hand, you know, one of the things
I love about watching the LPGA Touris it always feels relatable, you know,
(01:27:05):
like if you're a you know,if you're a ten to fifteen,
twenty handicap, what have you.I feel like watching the LPGA Tour is
very relatable. Now, none ofus hit it as straight as they do
or as accurately as they do onthe LPGA Tour, But what I mean
is is, Okay, they're onehundred and you know, forty five yards
away, they're going to hit aseven iron or they're going to hit an
(01:27:26):
eight iron, which is what it'srelatable, you know. And we're watching
the tour normally and it's like whatyou just said, it's driver, wedge
driver, wedge driver, nine iron, and I want to see these guys
hit some different clubs. I thinkthat's more fun. The longer distance in
more stuff can happen. I likea little chaos, Bobby. Yeah,
you know. And one of thethings that TJ of America and Carrie Hay
do really well is the way theyset up a golf course. Like I
(01:27:49):
said, the rough it's it's Kentuckybluegrass and it's got some fescue in it.
So the ball sits down kind ofin a nest a little bit.
You'll get some good lives, butyou'll get some really bad life. And
if you hit it in the rough, there's not a lot of room around
the greens to be able to runthe golf ball up, and with the
zoije because it's sticky, you're notgoing to see a lot of run ups.
(01:28:12):
So you've really got to be onyour game to hit the ball in
the fairway. I think Tiger whenhe won here, he hit eighty two
percent of his fairways in two thousand. Rory when he won here hit like
seventy five of his fairways. Sosomebody that hits it long and hits it
in the fairways definitely going to havethe advantage. But yet if you if
(01:28:34):
you're able to hit fairways, thenyou're going to have a little bit better
way of getting the ball into thegreens to be able to have some good
opportunities for birdies and a lot ofpars. Let's talk about some of the
contenders. We'll start with the defendingchampion, fresh off a live tour victory,
(01:28:54):
Everyone's favorite guy, Brooks Kopka. It feels like this is a kind
of golf course it would suit BrooksKepka quite well. Yeah, Brooks is
uh. He's a guy that's provenhe could win back to back years.
He's done at the US Open,he's done at the PGA Championship, and
coming off last year, this isa perfect golf course for him because he's
a guy that has no problem hittingit long and hitting it relatively straight.
(01:29:17):
He was pretty disappointed with his performanceat the Masters, where he finished,
you know, a little lower thansomething. Yeah, it's crazy, yeah,
something like that, and his andhis trainer beat him up after the
event for the next week because hedid that. So but he's coming off
(01:29:40):
a win in Singapore. It'll beinteresting to see how he plays. But
he gets himself up for major championships, that's where he shines. So I
expect kept going to be there alongwith you know, the three guys that
they're talking about our Scotti, Scheffer, Rory and Brooks. Let's talk about
Rory. The it became public thisweek he's getting divorced. Never know how
(01:30:00):
that's going to work for a guy. Maybe it's a relief for him that
it's public now that you know, getting his getting his life in order,
what have you? And and maybesome stability there. Rory is kind of
on a heater right now golf wise. I'm sure this thing it's not like
the divorce was happened yesterday, justbecame kind of public. So what about
Rory in this golf course. Itseems again like a kind of a nice
fit for him. Well, itis a nice fit because he won here
(01:30:24):
in twenty fourteen, so this isa perfect golf course for him. He
absolutely bombs it off the tee andwe saw that last week in Charlotte when
he was hitting it. He wascarrying at three twenty five plus off the
tee and that will bode well forhim here if he's able to get the
(01:30:45):
ball in the fairway. So butyou know, having said that, like
you said, and you know, the divorce announcement this week, I think
you know, possibly last week beforeit was filed. At the beginning of
this week, he was freed up. He's lightened up a little bit,
and it's he's playing some great golfright now. Sixty five in the final
(01:31:12):
round last week when everybody else wasthree or four shots worse, was phenomenal
golf. And then winning at atNew Orleans with Shane Lowry and his buddy
in a team event was awesome aswell. So, yes, he's coming
off a heater. I expect Roryto play well again this week because he's
had success there already. There. It's kind of a three headed monster this
(01:31:32):
week. Those two and then someguy named Scheffer. That hurd is pretty
good, although he's coming off afar different week than Rory had. They
just had he and his wife Marythat just had their first child. We
all heard about the child maybe potentiallycoming a month ago to in the Masters.
That was obviously not the case, but you know, a baby's about
five six days old right now. He's here. Practice was a little limited.
He's been kind of you know,it's been a little different world for
(01:31:54):
Scotty Cheffer. I mean, tome, you never bet against Scotty Scheffer,
but there's a little bit of anunknown there isn't there with his game's
going to be, with what he'sgone, you know, not gone through,
but you know the life changes he'shad in the last week. Yeah,
he said, you know, whenhe was home, he was still
practicing, he was still working towardsplaying a major championship, and he said
he took his little guy in hisarms Bennett on Sunday night and said to
(01:32:15):
him, you know, I'm sorryI have to leave. He said,
but I need to go take careof some business and play the PGA Championship.
And he didn't feel it was fair. Even though he didn't want to
leave, he didn't feel it wasfair to show up on Wednesday and not
give adequate direction and focus into amajor championship like the PGA Championship. That's
(01:32:41):
why he left and arrived on Mondayafternoon. So you know, I don't
expect anything else then, just phenomenalplay from Scottie. He's proven that he's
phenomenal off the tee gets the ballin the fairway around the greens or hitting
into the greens. He gets theball in the spots that he needs to.
(01:33:03):
He's a phenomenal chipper. And ifhe puts just average, Scotty Schefferer
wins. If he puts really good, he runs away. So I think
Scotty Scheffler will will play well thisweek. I think he's got a new
lease on life with being a dadand uh and he's got all the support
(01:33:24):
from his family, friends and lovedones. And I think Scotty's going to
do extremely well. I'm looking forwardto a couple of groups out here,
Brooks, Koepka, Max Holma,Jordan Speeth. That is going to be
a that what a great group towatch, Bobby Huh. I mean,
there's you got everything there, right. That's that's a spif who knows what
you're gonna get with him. Hecould be in contention or be cut by
(01:33:45):
Friday. Max Holma, you knowyou're kind of waiting for him to break
through, right, But just agreat personality and a guy that a guy
that I just he played so wellat the Masters. At some point it's
gonna be Max's time. That That'sa fun group right there. Yeah,
it's a great group. Of course, we know about Brooks and what he's
been able to do in majors. He's got five of them, two US
Opens and three PGA Championships. ButMax Homer, like you said, at
(01:34:11):
the Masters, played phenomenal golf andit's left on the lead for three days
at the Masters and proved to himselfthat his game is good enough to win
at this level. Except for thatshot on twelve. He was right in
the mix at Augusta and you knowwhere he made a double bogie and kind
of fell out of out of contentionthat way. But I expect him to
(01:34:33):
play well again this week. Andthen Jordan Spieth going for the Career Grand
Slam. Who knows with him,he's flying under the radar this week and
because of that, you know he'sgot he's got less pressure on him.
They asked him the question about ifhe likes having having everybody say, well,
(01:34:54):
yeah, this is for the carewGrand Slam, and he goes,
I don't care if it's for theCareer Grand Slam or not. He said,
I want to majors and I wantto win a bunch of them.
And by virtue of him having anopportunity, he said, there's not a
lot of people in history that havedone it, only like five and he
said that would be really cool tocreate some history. But I want to
(01:35:14):
win more major championships and this isjust another one of them. I think
golf's more fun when speak's playing well, and in contention, he's just the
personality, the ability to lose hismind at the same time make great shots,
especially around the green. I mean, he's one of the more entertaining
golfers I think out there yelling atour buddy at our buddy Michael Greller all
the time. You know, Ijust I want Speed in contention because he's
fun to watch, he's entertaining.Give me some other names. You always
(01:35:38):
bring up Feenale, but this isa course that I think does fit your
guy from Salt Lake and Tony Fenale, I should say West Valley City.
Tony Fenal is out there. He'splaying with thee Heath Sigala and Hatton tomorl.
But that's I think that's a goodgroup. But female seems to be
a guy that jumps out JT.It's kind of home homecoming for Justin.
Thomas hasn't had the best of gameslately, especially with the putter. Other
(01:35:59):
guys, John rom hasn't really hadthe year on the Live two or the
people expected. So who are someother guys you're looking at besides the big
three we talked about in Speed? You know, I think a guy that
you really got to look at who'scoming off of back surgery just not long
ago, but has played some reallygood golf, as will Zala Turus.
He's a guy that has put himhimself in contention at the Masters, at
(01:36:24):
the US Open. You know,he's won once on the PGA Tour.
I expect him to play really, really well. Another guy that you've got
to look at is lou vig Oberg. And you know, he played his
first major championship for the Masters justin April. He finished second in the
tournament in his first major ever andin his first Masters, So I think
(01:36:48):
you got to look at that guy. That guy went from three thousand in
the world and skyrocketed up to withinthe top ten or fifteen in the world
already. It was one a coupleof times on the PGA Tour and once
in Europe and only been on thetour for just a little over a year.
Maybe Wyndham Clark, maybe Cameron Smith, another guy, Cameron Young.
(01:37:12):
I think all those guys would befun to And of course Ricky Fowler.
He finished up well the last timethey played it here in twenty fourteen,
so Ricky Foller might be a goodpick as well. Go rest the voice.
We're gonna bother you as the weekgoes on and keeps getting some updates
from you, So we'll do thatlater on, but go rest the voice
the meantime. But first, tellus about real Golf radio and what you
