Speaker 2 (02:41):
All right, welcome in the show brought to you my
still Calling Me Casino SnO Casino dot com. First and foremost,
a big thanks to Greg gig three or four Gez
Greg Giga Bell filling in yesterday on the show. I
appreciate him doing that. Had a little knee procedures plural
done yesterday. Shout out to my friends at Reflex Knees.
I'll talk about them more coming up, but hopefully so
(03:03):
far so good that a'll turn of the turn him
to the better here for some some knee issues. So
big thanks to my man, doctor Corgan out there and
the crew at Reflex Knees and good good folks out there.
So thanks. Greg filling in a shout out congratulations to
the Bell family. His son is graduating from the Harvard
of the Northwest Washington State University tomorrow, so he'll be
(03:26):
over there for that. Go Cook So graduation weekend for
the Cooks this weekend, so Greg's heading over there, so
we're not We don't even see him here because we
are at the Virginia Mason Netflix Center. It's not often
I come here and I don't see Greg Bell, but
he's not here today. So John Manley's taking over for
the TNT. But it is the first day of two
thousand and twenty five season. We see players on the field. Now,
(03:49):
these players, I'm guessing here seventy or so. It looks
like all are all rookies. Is the rookie meeting camp.
They're all out here. The eleven Draft pick. Not all
are participating. Some guys Riley Mills, you know, still banged debt.
Tory Horton is still a little bank debt, so that
they're being cautious with those guys. But everybody else, they're
all in the on the field in Jerseys. A bunch
(04:10):
of undrafted free agents that have signed free agent contracts
and guys that are just camping vite eaes that are
out here giving it a go. Will Rogers from Washington,
the former quarterback, is one of those players out here,
one of the two quarterbacks on the jam with Milroe.
So first day of training camp, Damien Martinez will join
us from the Seahawks draft this year. He's going to
(04:31):
join us their seventh round pick, coming up at about
one forty ish. When they're done, we'll have Damian Martinez,
the former Oregon State beaver. I don't know where he
finished Mark his college career at I have no idea,
Mark James, where he finished.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
It's like now towards the end of the alphabet.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Yeah, I don't know, No, No, I have no idea.
Maybe Mark you can text me let me know where
he finished school. But yeah, he I went back and
looked at his game blog, because I go, God, why
does he feel like he was a nightmare? He kind
of was for the two schools here.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Well, well, we got to see him when in the
former Pac twelve quite right.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
So against Washington he had two games he ran for
one hundred and seven and he ran for one hundred
and twenty three. Against the Coogs he ran for one
to eleven and eighty one. Now, I will say the
good news is for my Koogs, he didn't he scored
no touchdowns against Cooks, scored two against the Huskies. But
(05:25):
if you just want to look at it combined, we
just want to combine it. There's no scoreboard here. David
Martinez had four games against the schools in the state
of Washington, and he averaged well over one hundred yards
in those four schools, and he had eighty one in
the game he didn't get one hundred yards in that
was against US and he still averaged almost five yards
of carry in that game. So yeah, he did some
damage against the Coogs in the Huskies. Be nice to
(05:46):
see him in a Seahawk uniform. I still think it's
I think and I don't. I don't. I'm not going
out on a limbit. A lot of people think this
like it's a steal of the drafts for Seattle. I
think he's got a chance to really to be a
really good player for this team, and to get him
in the seventh round. A guy that gets yards after
contact like he does, plays physical football. I think Mike
McDonald's gonna love if he is the same guy that
(06:07):
we saw both at Miami and at Oregon State. He
is the kind of guy Mike McDonald is going to love, physical,
hard running back consented tone. Uh, He's gonna be well
downe on the depth chart to start the I mean
he'll be number four when we start training camp in July,
behind Walker Sharponnet and Macintosh. But I think this dude's
got a chance to do something. Listen, you will see
(06:30):
and hear a lot. You know, I love you Corbyn
Smith and Hawk Blogger and all you other guys out there.
You guys are out there. These guys, these nerds were
out here arguing early when I got to the media
room about some sort of passer rating this that, and guys,
you'll hear a lot of hot takes and takeaways from
from rookie mining.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Camp, of course, because that's all we have right now.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
I honestly I went back over the years just looking
at some of the draft the drafts, right and then
as I went through all the drafts the Seahawks have had,
and then and as I did that, and I went
through and said, okay, all those included some Schneidering and
Carol came here. They included a rookie Mini Caamp. What
do I remember about it? And I've been to every
one of them? What did I remember? That stood out?
(07:13):
One thing only once, and only one time, and it
was Pete Carroll at the end of the one with
in twenty twelve with Russell Wilson talking about how this
guy is going to be in the mix and all this,
and we watched Russ that weekend and it was readily
apparent that he was. And we kind of thought at first,
you know, it's Pete just being Pete and kind of
giving us some Pete's Oh, he's right in the mix.
(07:34):
He's right the mix. Him and met Flann. I can't
wait to see, you know, he can't wait.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
To July, mister Sakia.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
But it was a it was a foreshadowing of what happened,
and you know, and rust ended up and so that's
the only rookie mini camp. I love being out here.
Don't get me wrong. I'm never gonna I love being
out here. I'm just saying you're not gonna come away
with a lot of hot takes this weekend outside of
just what guys kind of look like. Jalen Milroll looks
the part. I mean, just a beautiful looking athlete. It's
(08:00):
six two two eighteen moves like we watched him doing
just some early drills, moving around. I mean, he's just fluid.
It's it's I mean, he's a he's a and he
throws a really beautiful ball. I mean again, it's guys
in shorts and a T shirt in April. No, it's
May now May second right, It's yeah, chuck it around
(08:20):
a little bit. But but you can see there's something
there with him. There's a listen. Q Millan is QB one.
He's our quarterback guru. He knows this stuff. I don't.
But then but the guy. You know, anybody, if you're
a football fan, you can watch guys throw it and
say it looks like Gino Smith when he threw a
football here next to Sam Howell. The last couple of
(08:43):
last year for not last two years, but last year
it looked different. The ball had more zip, had a
little more spin. It just looked different than howl. Uh
and you just side by side, all due respect to
Will Rodgers, watching Milroe and Rodgers kind of toss it
around early, it looks different from Miller Rowe. Now can
he be accurate again to see Andrews? What is it accurate?
(09:04):
Accurate on time to the right person. Those are the
three things. Mike hu Millen quarterback one on one, that's
the question with him. We'll find out. But watching him
chuck it around, good looking athlete. Obviously, you know Gray's
able their first round pick. Every bit of six six
three sixteen, every bit of that looks he looks like
a tackle. But he's gonna play guard next to Charles Cross.
(09:26):
Uh and they had him lining up at left guard today.
So yeah, it's it's fun to be out here, fun
to see these guys. Robbie Oots does have an incredible mustache.
I'll tell you that, it's absolutely incredible. The tight end
turned full back at six three two seventy four, that dude,
every bit of sixty three two. He does look more
like an offensive lineman than anything at six three, two
seventy four, but a good looking player.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
I mean, let's what a fullback ends up being, right.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
You know, I think of fullbacks. I think a guys
are five ten and two fifty.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
I do as much.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Guy is six three and two seventy and so he's
gonna line up in the backfield. But uh, outside of that,
you know, again, there's no pads, there's no contact, shits
like that. But it's cool to be out here. I'm
excited to talk to Damian Martinez today. I really am.
I get to know this guy. I heard he's a
great interview so I think you guys will enjoy hearing that.
Coming up at around right around one forty today, rest
(10:14):
of the show. Danny O'Neil is going to join us
in just a couple of minutes. Lots to talk about
with the baseball team. He wrote a good article about
how he was wrong. Well, a lot of us were.
We're still early in the season, but a lot of
us were wrong about this baseball team, including Danny and me.
We'll talk about that with him coming up, Damian Martinez,
We're gonna check in. Also, we did it. We taped
an interview with Bryce cable due before practice, so we'll
(10:35):
get to that. He is the offensive lineman from Kansas,
a sixth round pick that's going to be in the
mix to try to get a roster spot this year.
Really good story too, like at one point told not
to play football, so we'll do that. Coming up at
two o'clock hour, our man Joe Wi is going to
join us today for Emerald Downs. Derby Day is tomorrow.
A lot going on down there and kind of a
lot going on in the horse racing business and maybe
(10:55):
the future of Emerald Downs in doubt, So we'll find
out what that's all about from Withy coming up up
around two twenty today, So all down the show as always.
You can chime in four nine four five one. That

your concerned I want to hear from you today. Talk

Speaker 3 (11:24):
There's some really good stuff up there.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
And I just need you to do that. I really
need you to do that. So if you can do
that for me, go to the end. While you're there
the little red microphone, fire away your thoughts as well.
We'll get to more coming up Danny O'Neil.

Danny O'Neill joins us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline, The
Dang Apostrophe. I read your column this morning, and yeah, yeah,
you were wrong, man, you were wrong. The rest of
us were right. You were the only guy wrong about
the Mariners. We'll get to that in a second. How
are you, buddy, I'm good. How are you, a yan,
I'm good, I'm good. We we we are back here
(12:27):
at the Virginia Mason Athletics Center. It is day one
a football practice twenty twenty five, also known as Rookie
Mine also known as Rookie Mining Camp. I'll get to
the Mariners in a second, Danny, but I do want
I was telling Jess and the listeners in the first segment.
You know, I've I think I've been to pretty much
every one of these at least one day of the
(12:49):
Rookie Mini Camp since twenty ten when John and Pete
first started this, and and the only thing, honest to God,
I remember the only thing that ever stood stood out
was too twenty twelve, when afterwards Pete was saying that
Russell Wilson, this little quarterback out of Wisconsin, he's gonna
be right in the mix. He's right in the mix.
We like it, like all that, and I think we
all kind of collectively rolled our eyes and go, yeah, yeah, okay, Pete,
(13:11):
we've been around you two years now, we get it.
Blah blah blah, Matt flinch'r quarterback. But you can tell
us how good this Russell Wilson guy is. And hey,
lo and behold there was some foreshouting to that actually
Mini camp.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
Yeah, that was I remember the exact same thing, because
Russ was the only he was the only quarterback that
was there for the Rocky Mini camp. So he's through
a ton, through an absolute ton. And I think it
was on it was either Friday or Saturday. A couple
of the veterans who were there came out and I
remember Doug Baldwin reacting to one of the get balls
(13:43):
that Russ threw, like very excited about it. Yeah, And
at the end of it, you had you had Pete
saying like, I don't know where he's going to fit in,
but he's shown enough that he's he's part of the conversation,
he's part of the competition. And it was I thought
it was so unlikely that Russ would end up starting
really at any point that year, but certainly not in
(14:05):
week one. But but Pete did true to his word,
like he opened a path of like, hey, you can
win this job, and Russ certainly did that when it
came fall. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
You know what, that's a good point because the part
of that that jumps out and you think back, right
is that you know from day one, Pete, you know,
he preached competition and you know it was a lot
of guys that played in the league will tell you, like, well,
every NFL coach, every college coach's competition. Sometimes there's real
competition and sometimes there's not. But that was wild because
they had just signed Matt Flynn and there was competition.
(14:38):
And it took what was it was it the third
preseason out of four or third or second or third
thid preseason game right that he started, that Russ finally
started and we're like, whoa, oh, okay, all right, this
guy maybe is the dude.
Speaker 5 (14:52):
He was on the road in Kansas City, and I
had kind of thought of, okay, when Matt Flynn started
the second preseason game, kind of tips the hand that
Russ isn't going to get it, and nope, Pete Pete
wanted to watch Russ start on the road and John Schneider,
who was John was the driving force of selecting Russ.
Like it's not like he had to he had to
(15:13):
veto anyone or put his pick through, but John was
the guy that zeroed in on him. And several years
after it, John I remember him saying to me that
he kind of widened his eyes when Pete brought up
the idea of starting Russ where he was like, really,
he's a rookie, you really are going to think about
doing that. So Pete, it took someone with Pete Stones
(15:36):
to be able to make that call because nobody would
have bat it DENI if he starts Matt Flynn and
instead he started a rookie, and really for the first
for the first four games, certainly, but I would even
say up until the comeback against New England, there was
a lot of thought of like, Okay, Russ might be
the long term guy here, but why couldn't they make
the playoffs with Matt Flynn as opposed to a rookie
(15:58):
and that let Russ have his time next year year?
And Pete's Pete's conviction about it really really did pay
awful to Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
I remember the first game down in Arizona, and it
was I was down there and we're watching that thing
from above, and that was when Arizona basically blitzed on
every single play, remember that, and just at times he's like, God,
this young guy's overwhelmed. And then there he was at
the end of the game and they had a chance
to win. He marched him down the field and you
know that pass and when Doug. I think Doug got
(16:25):
his was a Doug or Golden got their teeth knocked
out or something? Remember that, Yeah, in his mouth? Yeah,
it was bad. We were sitting. We were actually I
was next to our photographer at Fox and was in
the end zone. That was back when they let us
on the field, and I'm on the end zone at
the end of the game, and it was like like
medicine ball City. But Russell let him down the field
and got there. Do you see. I've got my own thoughts,
(16:48):
but do you see any parallel in Milrow and Russ?
In a third round pick and only the third quarterback picked,
and a guy that maybe has a lot of an
upside along the way.
Speaker 5 (16:58):
I do think that he has a lot of upside,
but I don't see a parallel. For this reason, the
question about Russ wasn't about how he functioned within an offense.
It really was about hype. It really was, hey, can
you have a quarterback? He does everything you want. He's
just two inches shorter than anybody we've really seen play
(17:20):
this position at a high level. And with Milroe it
is different the questions with Milroe. I certainly believe that
Milroe will see the field this year, probably in multiple games.
I really hope that they do develop a package for him.
But his feel for the passing game, his timing, his anticipation,
(17:44):
those are things that really need to develop. Whereas I
mean Russ going down to the fact that he transferred
to Wisconsin and shown an ability to internalize a new
playbook in a matter of months, Russ was really prepared
to be able to pilot in NFL offense.
Speaker 6 (18:01):
The only question.
Speaker 5 (18:02):
The only question was was his height, and that's just
not the case with Milroe. I think that there is
a huge amount of upside. I love the selection of Milroe.
I'm really excited about it. But if you and I
were kind of rolling our eyes at the idea of
Pete saying Russ could start, I think that I'm just
(18:23):
outright dismissing any talk about Milroe being able to become
a starter this year. I don't see that happen.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
You have to have two of the guys get hurt.
I mean Donald and Andrew Locke, who they signed. And
I think here's a difference to Danny, having been around
him for a year. Ain't no way Mike McDonald's gonna
come out and throw that kind of stuff out there
either like that quote, Milroe's right in the mix, like
he'll never say that right in the competition, he's right there.
There is no chance that Mike McDonald's even you know what,
even if he is in that, there's no chance that
(18:52):
this guy's gonna he's he plays it pretty tight to
the vest along the way.
Speaker 7 (18:56):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
And I'm with you, That's why I asked you without
giving my opinion. I agree, I think did with Milroe.
You have a guy that you know, at a third
round pick, he's got massive upside, there's a lot of
stuff to be excited about, but he's not and he
he isn't right. Russ was a polished college past and
a polished and and a finished product to the point
(19:17):
where like if he had eligibility, he wouldn't have had
anything to do. He couldn't have done anything more at
that point. He was a third round pick, like you said,
because he was short. Russ had done everything he could.
Milroe in the sense probably could have benefited for playing
another year under klen to boor and and seeing what
he could do and develop him like he did with
Michael Pennix. But here he is, I you know, we
(19:40):
laid eyes on him earlier or else ide watching practice
and you know, as you well know, shorts T shirts
may second. What can you tell? Kid's a good looking
athlete though, Man, he moves, he's fluid, all the things
you heard about him. It's it's like, okay, and he's
standing next to and again, this is not me taking
a shot at the former Husky quarterback. Enough people, Uh
Jed Fish did that to Will Rogers. But you know
(20:02):
he's standing next to Will Rodgers and you want to
watch someone warming up and rolling around. I mean the footwork,
the fluidity, the throwing of the ball and stuff is
just a different level, Like there's something there. I'm excited
he kind of He's one of those guys, Danny that
makes one of the worst things in the world. NFL
preseason games maybe worth watching this year to see what
Milroe does.
Speaker 5 (20:20):
There is nothing more exciting. I don't care if they're
going against Scrubs. Watching a young quarterback get into a
game in the preseason is it gives you something to
talk about? Hell, I remember kind of getting excited about
a guy named Josh portis in.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
God. Yes, that's a great poll buddy, that's a cream.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
Spriggling around it.
Speaker 8 (20:45):
It's fun to watch.
Speaker 5 (20:47):
This is part of the the excitement or the idea
of it. And I'm I'm of the opinion that the
Seahawks should have been drafting quarterbacks more regularly, but the
excitement that that I feel, and I am really interested
to see how how this plays out long term.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
With Jaylen Milrow, Oh God, were you doing radio when
Portos was here, because you probably, if you were, you
were taking in hearing from the same thing. We were
hearing about how maybe this guy should be a starter
and this and the other thing. It's like, God, Josh Portis, man,
come on, oh man, I remember those days. Remember the
great Remember the great Mike Teal, Remember that that experiments deal.
Speaker 5 (21:28):
Josh Portis is also the source of one of the
funnier stories because it well, it would have been. It
would have been twenty twelve, it was. It was Russ's
rookie years. Portis was still on the roster. He might
have been on the practice squad at that point, but
the practice squad players traveled and they had a game
in Miami. It would have been right after the bye,
so it's either late November it was.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
It was. It was a Sunday after Thanksgiving. I remember it.
Speaker 5 (21:52):
Yeah, And they had bed check on Saturday night at
a team hotel and Josh Portis wasn't there, And then
when they reported the stadium, Josh Portis was there. He
kind of tried to work his way into the locker
room if he met that whole.
Speaker 4 (22:09):
Time with.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Oh my god.
Speaker 8 (22:14):
It didn't so much missbed check because he.
Speaker 5 (22:16):
Just didn't go back to the hotel, And unfortunately for
Josh I believe, I believe he was released the following
week and that was the end of his run as
a Seahawks player.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
He was actually released about an hour after they saw
him and trying to get into the locker room, probably
knowing knowing how John and Pete were operating back then.
Speaker 5 (22:34):
I will give him points for trying, but he decided
He's like, I got a hail Mary here, maybe the stork.
Speaker 9 (22:41):
Yeah, I said there the whole night.
Speaker 8 (22:43):
You guys just didn't see me.
Speaker 5 (22:44):
Oh I wasn't down there for breakfast, Yeah yeah, I
was on the bus.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (22:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
No. The only thing I can get away they could
get away with that is Marshawn and he did in
st in Saint Louis. I'll never forget it. We come
out of the hotel. It was it was myself, Steve
Shramick Uh Bailey are two photoks from from Fox thirteen
and Chris Egan and I think the the late great
Alan Reid. And we're all waiting for our cars from
the valet at the hotel, and the buses had all
(23:10):
left except for one. And the one bus that had
left was Pete and John. It was bus number one
and and they're like waiting and then my good friend
Jeremy I love them the works, she does all the
travel and stuff. There's like this weird panic guy's going
in and out of the hotel. Danny like what's going on.
I'm like, what the hell. We're sitting there, like what's
going on here? And finally they took off and and
(23:30):
uh and they blowed the bus and took off and
we're waiting there and waiting for the car, and I
don't know a few minutes later before the cars come up,
out comes Marshaun ambles out of the hotel. Ambles, you know,
he's got a couple of dudes with them and just
looking as Marshaan as can be. And it was the
greatest line ever Egan walked up to him and goes, Yo,
you need a ride, and he says he goes, he
(23:50):
said something like no, boss, I got it. He jumped
into cab. He jumped in a cab and headed to
the headed to the Hubert H. Humphrey Domer over to
help with this was called I got a boss, No boss,
I got it. And he's the only guy that could
get away with that, the only dude. And it was
just and it was still a matter of fact, like
(24:11):
he didn't even didn't blink an eye. Man, it was
just Marshawn being Marshan. Just you do you, buddy, You
just do you. You're the best. Got a lot of that.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
If there's one thirty for thirty we really need it
is it is a true thirty for thirty on Marshaw
the differentiation between what our is urban myths, what actually
happened some of the things, because he is like we
there is a shortage of characters left in the world,
Like I feel like everybody's kind of become sanitized. They
(24:41):
coached on what they what they say, like Marshawn is
an absolute American original.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
He wrote by I was doing the show here once
in middle of the summer, and you know what it's like,
you're doing a show here at the vMac. I'm sorry,
Virginia Mason Athletics Center. Uh, and you're doing the show
and you know where we were for KJR. We're into
like the hottest part of the cement that they put
us under. And it was one of those practice was
early in the day. It was probably like two thirty.
My old co host, the old Midday guy here h
(25:10):
and I were sitting there by ourselves, not a soul
to be seen, and lo and behore. We look off
in the distance and uh and he kind and all
of a sudden, we see this guy riding a bike
from like where the lakeside towards us. Guy rides his
bike by, looks at us, and it was right at
the end or right during like weird time, Like I
think he was still holding out or something at that point.
So I was like, what the hell And he comes
(25:31):
riding by. Honest to god, Danny, I'm not lying. He
had a bell on the bike and he rings the
bell and he rides by and he just kind of
like we're on the air talking and Marshawn, he goes
kind of looks all what's up? And it keeps and
just rode up, rode the bike, ride on by us.
Thanks for coming see you, like yes, yes, yes, yes,
(25:53):
single speed bike and he just rode right by us
like nobody even knew he was here because he wasn't
even supposed to be here. It wasn't a practice. Just
did his thing. It's like, dude, you are you are
a different guy man and did his own thing it all,
did it well? All right? Daniel'nil joining us? Danny, how
wrong were you about the Mariners.
Speaker 5 (26:12):
Like the rest of us, Well, I'm very happy to
have been wrong. I still am kind of scratching my
head and trying to figure out exactly how they're hitting
as well as because if you at the beginning of
the season, if you said thirty games in, they are
one of the top ten offenses, I would have told you, like, okay,
(26:35):
Randy or Rosarina and Julio Rodriguez are just knocking the
cover off the ball. And that's really not the story
I think. I think Julio. Julio's more effective and a
bet a better hitter than you would expect giving his average,
which is not very good. But the fact that they've
(26:56):
been as prolific as they have, as much power as
they've had is really jarring. And look, they've been banged up.
There's a lot of reasons where if they were twelve
and eighteen right now, I would still feel fairly optimistic
because I'd say they're starting pitching is probably going to
be better over the last one hundred and thirty games,
(27:18):
and it's been over the first thirty. I think Julio
will end up hitting better than he has, and instead
they're eighteen and twelve in spite of in my mind
that right now they're missing their top two starting pitchers,
one of whom hasn't thrown an inning for him yet
this year, and the top of the order. It's been
the bottom of the order that's doing Yeomen's work in
(27:39):
terms of carrying the load. It's absolutely fantastic.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
On base percentage as a team in Major League Baseball.
On base percentage, they're number three, like the number three team.
That means you're walking like you're I don't know, controlling
this zone is what Jerry says. Right, you're slugging percentage
your eighth in Major League Baseball, U in your your ops,
your fifth as a team, and like you said, The
(28:04):
crazy thing is is that you know guys that you
thought would be The Polanco story is a good one.
It's also shows I don't know, I'd say almost, Okay,
this is where I'm gonna be critical and Kate Martin,
but don't call me but buddy, like like if like
Polonco was always a good hitter, then he was awful
last year and now he's phenomenal this year. Three four
(28:28):
is not gonna hold up right as an average, but like,
this guy is tearing the cover off the ball. He
wasn't healthy last year. Why in the world was he
on the field? Danny like like, like, what what are
you doing as an organization that this? Because and then
he goes off, so he's a knee surgery and what
other surgeries he has? And look at him now, man,
I mean it's I'd be pissed if I was yim.
(28:51):
Now he still came back and signed. It was his
only option, and what a great signing to re sign
him and save some money. But man, I he's the
story so far.
Speaker 5 (28:59):
Yeah, I completely agree. And the fact is is that
him hitting as well as he has kind of covers
up what we thought was a waste. This offseason. It
the inability to add significant infielders. Well, they did out
a significant infielder. He just showed up a year later
than we expected. And now he's playing third instead of
(29:19):
being at second. And Dylan Moore, Dylan Moore, who is
of all the guys that hurt, is kind of the
shortest term of the injuries he's been's been a benefit
baseball more than any other sport. Baseball is a sport
where you can have an accurate projection of where you
expect the guy to be, like I think, but there's
(29:40):
a huge variant like we always think of, like, oh,
you can peg him in for a certain there's a
plus or minus of what fifty slugging percentage points, eighty
slugging percentage points, twenty to thirty points in your batting
average that it can go either way. And it's always
seemed like the bearers they roll craps on two or
(30:03):
three of the guys where you're like, oh, this is
about as bad as you could possibly imagine him being.
And that's the version that the Mariner's got. And right
now they're they're catching a little bit of good fortune,
which I guess we're due. Maybe that's what you'd say.
Jerry knew we were due. Jerry Depoto said, of all
the different times, I know, I know we've got I
know we've got a good role in here. We're just
(30:24):
gonna stick with. We're not gonna We're not gonna change
from our plan. We're just gonna wait for ourselves to hit.
And absolutely they.

In fact, three of the four second matchups are set Toronto,
eliminating Ottawa last night. They move on to take on
the Florida Panthers in an Eastern Conference semi final. Washington,
Carolina already set for round two in the East and
the Eastern Conference semifinals. Vegas and Edmonton will play in

Waiting on the results of Winnipeg, Saint Louis and Dallas

they've had trouble there. They get blown out in the
first two games in Saint Louis. We'll see what they
can do tonight. They'll do it without their best player,

We'll get that break in right now. We'll check in

Mark James, that you I know, I know.

Uh.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
We'll get in with Damian Martinez, seventh round pick that

All right, we're back in the Virginia Mason Athletics Center.
You internetced with you football seasons here. Yeah, May second
football season. We're ready to go. This is a fun
time of the year for US. Training camp is fun,
the draft is fun, but rookie mini camp's even better
because you get to meet all the young guys getting
drafted coming in. And I know this as a Washington
State alum, and all Husky fans would agree, we're really
(34:30):
glad that this guy is out of college and no
longer running rough shot in the old Pac twelve. I'm
sure the ACC feels the same way. Seventh round draft pick.
I still like to say from Oregon State, but I
also like to say cam Wards from Washington State. Damian
Martinez is here with us right now. How are you
good about you? Congratulations? You had to wait longer than
(34:51):
most of us thought you would have to wait. And
I'm not the only guy to say this, so I
don't I'm not just you're sitting here. The general consensus
is steal of the draft might have been you, and
Seattle got you. But how difficult we saw the quarterback
from Colorado having to wait for a while. How difficult
was it to wait?
Speaker 11 (35:09):
I mean, you know, just how things play out. I mean,
at this point, I'm just blessed to be here, having
this opportunity. You know, I'm not really thinking about too
much in the past. Just glad I'm here, ready to
get to work with the team.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
What was it like stepping out there on a field
for the first time as an NFL player, putting on
that Jersey's weren't number twenty two, by the way, to
put on a Seahawk jersey here on the slote in
the shores of Lake Washington. What's it like for a
guy to step out there for the first time?
Speaker 11 (35:33):
Yeah, no, I mean you don't really get a view
like that. It practice the really most places. It was nice.
And then just in general, just being out there playing
football again, back to you know, my roots, what I'd do,
what I love to do, and just getting around, you know,
new teammates, you know, just building bonds of guys.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
So just glad to be out here and playing football again.
Speaker 2 (35:48):
Tell me this doesn't look like Corvallis or Miami Corvallis,
but hey, help me out here. So you you had
a great career at and I like to point this out,
and we mentioned this one hundred and twenty three, one
hundred and seven. Those are your two games against the
Huskies eighty one and one to eleven against Wazoo. Like
you did some damage against the two teams up here.
(36:10):
You did some damage against these two teams up here.
Had a terrific career at Oregon State. World now that
we live in with Nil right, is a little bit different.
Why'd you end up going to Miami.
Speaker 11 (36:18):
Just you know, new coaching staff, just wanted to prove
my best self. Just felt like, you know, it wasn't
a spot for me to do it at. Yeah, my
junior year, wanting to come out three now, so it
just felt like that wasn't the spot for me to
do it at.
Speaker 2 (36:29):
And you go down there Mario Christobal's that's a guy
that knows how to run the football. Yeah, how much
do you think he helped your game? Especially? I mean
he's a former offensive lineman, he's known for that type
of offense. He wanted a physical back, which that's what
you fit. How much did he help your game?
Speaker 9 (36:43):
Love?
Speaker 11 (36:43):
I mean just you know, running a whole new scheme,
just learning, you know, being more versatile and then getting
more involved in a past game, just having more opportunity
to get involved in the pass game.
Speaker 8 (36:51):
It was.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
It was just great.
Speaker 4 (36:52):
Just like I said, I wanted to prove my versatility
and my best.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
I'm gonna come back to you in a second, but
I got to ask about our old quarterback at Wazoo
at cam Ward All right, you guys go down there,
two guys that starred in the last year of the
pac twelve. You go down there, you get to play
with the number one overall pick. What was it like
playing with him?
Speaker 11 (37:08):
It was crazy, just you know, like you said, us
being both up here in Pacific Northwest playing against each other,
just seeing what he was doing then and then now
being in the backfield, just knowing what he was thinking,
how confident and calm he was.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
It's just crazy to be on the fiel with him.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
What was it about him do you think made him
the number one pick.
Speaker 11 (37:22):
We're the intangibles, I mean, just the leader, he is,
the person, he is, the type of player he is.
He's just he's calm, like I said, calm, confident. He
just brings that confidence to the team. Just he's so
cool and collect that he knows what he's talking about
and just brings that to the team.
Speaker 2 (37:33):
So Damian Martinez just joining us here Seahawk running back,
former Oregon State and Miami running back as well. All Right,
the scouting report on you, I would think is physical,
back yards, after contact, elusive, all those things and my accurate.
What is your game?
Speaker 11 (37:48):
Yeah, I mean, like I said, elusive. I feel like
I can do everything. I've kind of proved it in
my last three years, you know, being consistent in six
point three yards and two different schemes, just knowing what
I do, just being consistent and just being able to
do everything coach needs me to do.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
What they tell you when you came here, because they've
got a guy in ken Walker and Zach sharpen Ay
and last year Macintosh had a nice end of the
season as well, so there is some depth in that
running back room. You're different than those three guys. I
think most of us think. But but what did they
tell you about what their expectations are and what they
want to see from you?
Speaker 11 (38:17):
Just be myself, come out here and compete and then
you know, be a guy on specital team. You know,
you got to earn your way on the field. Just
prove yourself every day. So that's what I'm trying to do.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
Did you play much special teams in Oregon State of Miami?
Speaker 11 (38:27):
No, I didn't really do any of that, but I
did it practice A practiced. I would do to jo's
and stuff like that, but obviously I wasn't on a
special team.
Speaker 2 (38:33):
You' ready to go to tackle some guys and.
Speaker 11 (38:35):
Yeah, no, I'm ready. I'm ready something different. But you know,
I'm ready to do whatever, because.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
You know what better than being tackled, right, Yeah, I
mean you've been tackled enough times in your life. You're
kind of looking forward to going out and everybody else. Yeah, finally,
David Martinez for a couple more moments with us year
a Seahawk running back who is joining us? Kind of
enough after practice, all right, first practice. I we're kind
of watching. It's fun to watch this. You guys go
out there, like one of the first things you're doing
is stretching and doing all that stuff, and the coaches
(39:00):
are literally telling guys where to put this. This is out
as a seahawk, that's where to put your helmet but
on the left all these things. Was it like being
a freshman again?
Speaker 11 (39:06):
Oh yeah, in some ways, you know, just being out there,
you know, getting the fundamentals of everything. Just a new team,
new culture, and just you know, getting it down. Just
connecting with new people.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Who jumps out of you, Like who you talk to,
who've you bonded whistle far among other rookies and stuff
you talked to any of these guys? Yeah, a lot
of us.
Speaker 11 (39:20):
We know we're kind of you know, trying to get
it together, but you know, just all kind of we're
all kind of cool, you know, just you know, making
sure if we see someone news, say something right, making
sure you know each other's name, and then we getting huddle,
just cauraging each other.
Speaker 4 (39:30):
I think we're doing a good job with that.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Actually, what jumps out of you about the quarterback? About
General Milrow, he's.
Speaker 11 (39:34):
Just strong arm. You know, he's really smart. He's kind
of got it down. You know, it's a lot he
has to go through. So just for him to kind
of have that you know confidence already and just you
know getting to is Can you.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
See the arm strength with him just practice pats Yeah yeah.
And the athleticism, m oh yeah, you can see it
for sure. Could he be a running back? I don't know.
Speaker 4 (39:52):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
He's not going to be. That's kind of different. I'm
asking you because you're the guy who runs a ball.
Speaker 4 (39:57):
Like, no, yeah, he carries a ball.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
He's a big dude, Like, yeah, he's thick, isn't he.
Speaker 4 (40:01):
Yeah, No, he's a big dude. But I don't know.
It's getting hit every play happen to do it a
lot he did.
Speaker 2 (40:05):
He didn't miss a lot of days in the weight
room at Alabama.
Speaker 4 (40:07):
I don't think no, I don't think they would let
him do that.
Speaker 10 (40:09):
Uh uh, Damien, I appreciate coming by.
Speaker 2 (40:15):
What's up? So you got a couple of days of this,
then what's up after that? Just working out?
Speaker 4 (40:19):
Yeah, we got this this weekend.
Speaker 11 (40:21):
Go home for a little bit and come back and
get uh Dallas Tech or Louisville, Texas's like twenty minutes
north of Dallas.
Speaker 4 (40:27):
Did you end up at Oregon State? Really the only
team talking to me because A. J.
Speaker 11 (40:31):
Stewart was the running back coach there and he was
the only coach texting me every day. So just trusted
to him, believe in him and went up there.
Speaker 2 (40:36):
And it's an amazing process. Yeah. Like there's like like
in I think with Oregon State and watching State, you
see that a lot, right, Like guys are good guys
like flying to the radar, Like like I can't believe
you must have been good in high school, right yeah?
Speaker 4 (40:47):
I mean yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
Like you have to be good. Yeah, you know, cause
I hear something like all the respect I hear the
stuff about Cam. You know, Cam wore no a no
star athlete. Nobody that's getting an FCS scholarship had no
stars like he had stars, like one or two stars.
He had something along the way. What was your recruiting
like then it was just one guy? You had FCS offers.
Speaker 4 (41:05):
I had Georgia Tech, Kansas and Oregon State.
Speaker 2 (41:09):
Well see that's more than just that's that's nothing. Then
that's good.
Speaker 4 (41:11):
You get a couple, right, Yeah, but I mean they
weren't really talking to me. Only organ State.
Speaker 11 (41:15):
Oh really yeah yeah, I went up there coach Stewart
and just built the foundation with him and chose it
to him.
Speaker 2 (41:23):
Well, listen, it's great to have you back in the Northwest.
Great to see in Seahawk colors as well. Great to
see that you're not running against our schools anymore, the
Pacific Northwest. I'm sure Husky and Cougar fans like the
best of luck though. It's gonna be fun to watch
you play this year. Congratulations, I'll get drafted. Thank you

Seahawks draft pick. Good story. You'll enjoy hearing this story.
Bryce cable Do one of the three offensive linemen of
the Seahawks drafted. He is from Kansas, six round draft
(42:55):
pick this season for Seattle six four to three oh
eight out of the University of CA And just Bryce
cable To caught up with him earlier today and first
of all, asked him how he's doing.
Speaker 6 (43:05):
I'm doing good. How are you?
Speaker 2 (43:06):
I'm good. I'm good as I'm sure. It's kind of
a whirlwind going through the entire process of everything, and uh,
you know, this college season ends, prepping for an NFL draft,
talking to teams along the way and all those things.
How you feeling now a few days after the fact
that you know you're a Seattle Seahawk.
Speaker 6 (43:22):
I feel great. You know.
Speaker 12 (43:24):
It's it's an honor and privilege to be able to
be drafted by the Seahawks.
Speaker 10 (43:27):
You know.
Speaker 12 (43:28):
Through the whole process, you're the anxiety is so high.
You're so nervous about everything, especially during the draft, you know,
And so whenever I finally got the call, I uh
my body was able to calm down a little bit.
You know, UH started getting all the phone call, all
the text message congratulated me. So, you know, it just
feels good. It doesn't really feel real yet. You know,
I'm maybe it'll start feeling good or whenever I get
to Seattle tomorrow.
Speaker 6 (43:48):
But you know, it's just it's been an amazing experience.
Speaker 2 (43:50):
Yeah, once you step on the field to get the
first rookie mini camp this weekend, and you the good
thing about that, Bryce is everyone's in the same boat, right,
doesn't matter if you're a high pick or you're an
undrafted free agent or a mini camp invite, You're gonna
be out there with all the young guys. But you
get a chance to be an NFL field. Uh, for
the first time. I want to go back in time
a little bit because just kind of reading about your story,
(44:12):
it feels like you were a little bit of a
late bloomer along the way. So when did you think, hey,
maybe I have a chance to play professional football. Maybe
even go further back, when did you think he had
a chance even to play Division one football?
Speaker 12 (44:25):
I know it really so going back to high school,
you know, I didn't play football my sophomore year.
Speaker 6 (44:29):
I only played basketball in track and so I had
a I had a.
Speaker 12 (44:32):
Coach tell me that, you know, I wasn't I wasn't
a football player anymore. You know, if I wanted to
be on varsity that year and I shouldn't play, I
shouldn't play football, to just stick with basketball. And so
that's kind of what I did. And the entire that
entire season all was an off season for basketball, go
to all the football games, and I, you know, I
was pretty disappointed in myself. You know, I loved football
so much, and you know, I was pretty I was
(44:54):
pretty upset that I didn't end up playing. So as
soon as I got done, uh, as soon as that
basketball all season ended, in my basketball season ended, I
went straight back to football and I started playing. And
I was actually I played quarterback and safety all the
way up from my third grade year until my freshman year,
my last year of football.
Speaker 6 (45:12):
Didn't play my sophomore year.
Speaker 12 (45:14):
Whenever I came back to football my junior year, they
had put me a tight end for a little bit
and I wasn't really working out, and so I started
They put me an offensive line because that's where they
needed people. We didn't really have any people to play
offensive line anymore. And so they asked me, and.
Speaker 6 (45:29):
I did it. And I was really really bad for
a little bit.
Speaker 12 (45:32):
You know, I was probably two hundred and fifteen pounds
my junior year. You know, I was a really small,
really small person, and you could kind of get away
with that being in New Mexico, you know. But I
started getting a little bit bigger, started putting some good
film on Twitter. The coaches started reaching out to me.
(45:54):
I didn't really have too many offers just because I
was too small. I think I graduated my senior year
two hundred and thirty pounds.
Speaker 2 (46:01):
Wow.
Speaker 12 (46:02):
And so yeah, and so you know, I got really
really lucky being able to go to the University of Kansas.
Speaker 6 (46:08):
You know, they signed me pretty late.
Speaker 12 (46:10):
Extremely late actually, and so it was just a blessing
to be able to get over there to Kansas and
had really I've always had a really good string staff.
They got me to get my weight up, and you know,
it was it was an awesome experience.
Speaker 2 (46:21):
I think it's a great Bryce cable due from the
Seahawks joining US rookie draft pick. I think it's a
great lesson. I've got a son that was a multi
sport guy in high school and probably enjoyed basketball more
than he enjoyed football, and ended up playing small college
football on the offensive line. Actually just he just finished
doing that just for his eligibility, just ran out. But
(46:43):
you know, he had guys tell him the same thing basically,
And he played baseball too for a while and said
you can't play all three. And I remember thinking to
myself like, like, my guy, I'm like, you're probably not
going to play in the NFL or MLB and he's
a six' to three post player for basketball that you
went to, camp and just you, know those guys don't, exist,
Right So i'm, thinking play what you want to play
(47:03):
and do all you. Can and he'll tell you that
if he didn't play, basketball he wouldn't played college. Football
AND i think it's the same for. You who was
the idiot coach that said you shouldn't be playing football or?
WHATEVER i want to know that because this is this
is a good tale and a good story for you
to tell parents in our. Regions stop specializing and play
everything he.
Speaker 12 (47:21):
Can, yeah, well you know he was dismissed from the
basketball team shortly after.
Speaker 2 (47:26):
That good there you, go there you. Go, perfect.
Speaker 9 (47:31):
That's.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
Perfect, well isn't that the rule is should that not, Though,
BRYCE i, mean what would you tell, parents like you
should be able to play play? Everything? Right you never
know what's going to. Happen you were a two undred
thirty pound offensive lineman that played quarterback in tight, end
that was a basketball and baseball, kid, Right.
Speaker 6 (47:45):
Yeah, no. EXACTLY i mean it's.
Speaker 12 (47:48):
You, Know i'm a believer In, god and so you,
KNOW i you, KNOW i believe That, jesus you, know
no matter, What he's.
Speaker 6 (47:54):
Going to play me in the right position to be
Wherever i'm.
Speaker 12 (47:55):
At you, know rather that's going to be a football,
player whether that's going to be a basketball, player whether
that's not going to be uh any kind of sports,
player you, know and so you, KNOW i JUST i
trusted to, him you, know whatever stage it was in
my life to be able to you, know take me
to where he wanted me to.
Speaker 6 (48:10):
Be and so you, know that's kind of the WAY
i live my.
Speaker 2 (48:12):
Life when you got, drafted what was the? Reaction who
were you? With who was around?
Speaker 12 (48:15):
YOU i was with MY i was with my whole,
family a couple of friends from back, home and so you,
know they were they were very excited and them seeing,
me seeing all the rounds before, me other players, picked
and so you, KNOW i was just it was pretty,
stressful but you, KNOW i THANKFULLY i had my family around.
Me you, know they're they were having a good time
as soon AS i got picked and everyone went, wild
and so you, know it was it was a great.
Speaker 2 (48:36):
Experience kansas is starting to put offensive lineman in THE. Nfl,
right what's going on down?
Speaker 12 (48:41):
THERE i, mean, YEAH i. KNOW i mean we've Had
we've had two really good offensive line. Coaches we have
some really good, players AND i think the big thing,
is you, know we just were starting to build a.
Culture you, know the past couple of, years we started
to build a really good.
Speaker 6 (48:54):
Culture for offensive. Lineman that offensive line room room is really.
GREAT i mean.
Speaker 12 (48:59):
We're coming in where we watch film every single day,
together you, know three or four hours of film we,
Got we're on the field after, practice do an extra.
Work you, Know it's just it means more to us
than anything to be a good offensive.
Speaker 2 (49:10):
Line you, Uh bryce cable do with This BEFORE i
let you, go you played. Tackle it sounds like they're
gonna movie to guard where The seahawks told you about
about where they want to see you. Play where the
envision you playing for.
Speaker 12 (49:19):
Them, yeah as of right, Now i'm going to be playing.
GUARD i think they have me slot in his right
guard to start off, with start the training, camp start
to understand the offense a little bit, better and then
move me around a little bit to you, know to
absolutely know the whole.
Speaker 6 (49:33):
Offense and so, yeah but right Now i'm starting up at.
Speaker 2 (49:35):
Guard have you played much guard or is it always
been tackling? College and what do you think that transition
is gonna be? Like CAUSE i know WHAT i think
people just think offensive line you can just interchange and.
Stuff there is a. Transition so what do you, think you,
know have you played there or what do you think
the biggest challenge is going to.
Speaker 6 (49:47):
Be, yeah SO i.
Speaker 12 (49:49):
PLAYED i only played tackle all throughout, college AND i
got to start playing guard in The East West shrine
game this, year and so that was a little bit
of a hard, transition just because everything's a lot, faster
everything's in your face a lot.
Speaker 6 (50:03):
More and so you, KNOW i went to the, SPECIALLY
i had some really good.
Speaker 12 (50:06):
Coaches they taught me a, lot and so the whole
WEEK i progressed really really. Well and here At, seattle
we have really really good. Coaches we have an amazing
offensive line, coach we have an amazing assistant offensive line,
coaches and, so you, KNOW i think the transition is
going to be as smooth as.
Speaker 6 (50:22):
As you can make.
Speaker 12 (50:23):
It you, know you, could you can go and you
could not pay addition to the, details and you can
make it harder on, yourself and this is gonna take
you a longer time to, learn or you, could you,
know do the extra, studying watch the extra, tape and
it'll be a little bit. FASTER i think with my
body type and the way the WAY i, move how
BIG i, am you, KNOW i think transitioning into guard
(50:43):
is going to be is going to be a lot
easier than me playing, tackle and so you, KNOW i
think it's going to be a pretty good.
Speaker 6 (50:48):
TRANSITION i think it will be. Too you get an.
Speaker 2 (50:50):
OPPORTUNITY i, mean, look you've competed your entire, life, obviously
guys telling you shouldn't play football and going from, safety,
quarterback tight end to offensive line to all of a
sudden THE d one offer after only a COUPLE d
two offers along the, Way so you know what competition is.
Like i'm sure you're gonna be excited about that so
welcome to see how we can't wait to watch you play.
Speaker 6 (51:08):
Awesome we thank you so.
Speaker 2 (51:09):
Much there you. Go that Is Bryce cable due From.
Seahawks take a quick, break come back with more and
head down To Amerald. Downs find out About Derby weekend.
Speaker 7 (51:17):
Next On Casting live from THE r AND R Foundation
Specialist Broadcast. Studio now back To Ian fornz powered By
Seattle's close to The Sports Book snow call Me casino
On Sports radio ninety three point THREE KJR.
Speaker 2 (51:37):
Fm all, right we're back here at The Virginia Mason Athletic.
Center rickie minicamp wrapping epic thanks To Damian. Martinez Bryce
cable do a couple of draft picks for joining us
on the show. Today it's the second Of may twenty twenty.
Five that means the First saturday In may would be. Tomorrow, Tomorrow,
Son i'll come out, tomorrow and that means it Is Derby,
(51:58):
Day Kentucky Derby, day Also Opening, Day Windermer cup out
at the you know The Montlake cut but down In,
auburn And Emerald. Downs Derby, day going back to the
days of Long acres has always been a big, deal
even though the big race taken across taking place across the.
Country joining us on The Beacon plumbing hotline From Emerald
down's my good Friend joe with. You Hey, joe what's?
Speaker 4 (52:18):
Up?
Speaker 8 (52:20):
Hi Ian good to be with. You, yeah every track
in probably the, world Definitely North america benefits from The Kentucky.
Derby fans get involved and you, know there's a big
build up to The derby every, year as you said
For saturday And may twenty. HORSES i think we're down
to nineteen with the, scratch but it's quite the. Spectacle
(52:43):
horses of running races since The Breeders' cup last fall
to you, know get, positioning get. Points there's a point
system and journalism from The West coast is a decided,
favorite deserve favorite. Boy he's been awesome down there At Santa,
nita so he's the horse to beat. Tomorrow but we've
got live racing as, Well day number two starting at
(53:03):
one point. Fifty The derby goes about four pm and
you can do it on our big screen in the.
Infield so, yeah we'll being ready for Another Kentucky Derby.
Speaker 2 (53:12):
Saturday i'm gonna talk To Kentucky derby and all the
goings on In Emerald downs tomorrow, specifically and maybe throughout the.
Year in a, second but any sports fan listing right
now has probably seen the stories that have come out
over the last couple of months about the future of
horse racing in our. State, Usually, joe when we, have
like any kind of issue with a sport in our,
(53:33):
state it's, because let me refer to ourselves to The
Seattle SuperSonics in two thousand and, eight it's because the
venue isn't up to, Par the venue isn't good enough
and what we, have and that's not the case At Emerald.
Downs we've got a gorgeous. Venue if anybody hasn't been,
there it's. Fantastic just everything about its first class and
family friendly to just having a great time with your, friends,
(53:55):
buddies whatever it might, be and all the things you
have going. On we know how great the facility. Is
so what is the future of horse racing here in
the state and why is there some doubt about next?
Speaker 8 (54:05):
Year, yeah first of, ALL i would be. FLABBERGASTED i
think it's like ninety nine percent plus that will run next.
Year the money to distribute for purses and so forth
isn't quite as solidified as it is for this. Year,
actually we're going to have our best year in a
long time this year because Unfortunately Golden gate And pleasants
(54:29):
and closed In Northern. California we've got so many of
those trainers that have never raced up. Here they are.
Here they participated on our opening day Last. Sunday so
we have close to two hundred more horses this year
than we've had for the last several. Years that means better,
fields more competitive. Races the fans like. That the payoffs
(54:50):
are higher with the more horses you have for race
soap this, Year WAYNE O good next. Year there's this
organization called HAISA H Horse Racing integrity And Safety. Act
they Have this is about their fourth year in. Existence
they are a federal, agency but they are funded by
the tracks and they're spreading out Their their, revenue which
(55:14):
they need to, exist comes from the race, tracks not
from the federal. Government so we're going to be paying
as much As Churchill downs And, Belmont New york And,
Kentucky arkansas next. Year first, start, well that wasn't that
isn't the case this. Year so at bottom, line it's
going to be about an extra six hundred grand or
small tracks like us to PAY hesa fund. Them and
(55:39):
just for an, Example Belmont church will have one hundred
and thirty thousand dollars maiden races and allowance. Races our
top figure in that area is twenty five. Thousand yet
our people are going to be paying the same. Price
so we're definitely against that and that's a real hit
to our bottom line for next. Year so worst case, scenario,
(56:00):
trainers horses or owners creators are going to be running
for less person money next. Year but we do have
a year to work on all. That so, anyway we're
certainly notiking right now because again we're said to have
a good twenty twenty five and we'll excited about.
Speaker 2 (56:17):
That, No and it's and which is awesome BECAUSE i
did hear. That the fact, that you, know the unfortunate
nature of the business is some other tracks have. Closed
but that benefits The razor fans up. HERE i, MEAN
i don't even know you GOT i mean the satellite
betting is, through you, Know Emerald downs is. FANTASTIC i
know my friends In Skahoma casino are using you guys
now for. THAT i, mean it's just so there's a
massive interest in. It people want to do, it which is.
(56:38):
Cool help me out WITH heisa AND i, listen this
is sports. SHOW i know THAT i don't want to
get too deep into the, politics but this feels like,
Extortion like who are these. Guys they've been in existing
for four years now they're demanding this. Money what's going?
Speaker 6 (56:49):
On oh my?
Speaker 8 (56:51):
YEAH i, mean you know THEIR ceo has a dup
salary and they you, know we tracks the tracks, funded
so each track Has each state has a racing commission
that governs. EVERYTON i mean The stewart's here At Emerald,
downs they're. Judges they're part of The Washington Racing. Commission
the testing is under the auspices of The Washington Horse Racing.
Commission it's not An Emerald downs. Function that's been going
(57:14):
on here for. Time In memoriam as well as every other,
state there's testing of the winner of each. Race they
have the ability to levy bonds for any type of, trainer,
jockey any type of. Infraction so the state is in.
CONTROL heisa has come in and they they can override
(57:35):
anything the state. Does now they do use our in
place testing system and we get a monetary credit for.
That and that's probably the case in many. States some
states have elected not to be part OF. Heisa but
if you, are you cannot send your signal out across state,
lines which is a big source of. Revenue you, know
(57:57):
look at all the people At Emerald downs on the
fifth floor right Betting Churchill Downs. Friday you, know so
we get revenue for. That Churchill downs gets revenue for.
That so we need to send our signal. Out that's
a really bad. Option texas has decided not to do.
It they passed another bill where fifty percent of all
(58:17):
tax money on horse related products goes right back to
the racing industry that is really working. There we've actually
tried to get that bill In. Olympia it has not
gone through. TWICE i don't know. Why it just it's.
Sustainable the better your racing industry is, doing the more
money that everybody's going to. Get so, YEAH haisa can do.
(58:39):
Fee they find one of our trainers twenty five thousand
dollars for just it was a male horse had a
female hormone that just kind of got in the. System
it's not it wasn't. Enhancing i'm getting kind of deep,
here but this this woman only had three horses in
her barn and she's a, veteran and they did actually
(59:00):
rescind it to twenty five, hundred but it came out Of.
Kentucky kentucky backed it back in twenty twenty and it passed.
Nationally but again it's not funded by the federal. Government
they made rules for jockeys using their, whip you, know
and they didn't really give enough time on that if
(59:21):
you asked. Me but you, know some of the things are.
Reasonable but actually every racing commission and every jurisdiction had
almost everything that they our governoring in. Place so we're
thinking they're not quite as effective as the costs are
equaling out.
Speaker 2 (59:40):
To, well hopefully our fine stop, government we'll get their act.
Together but it sounds at least it sounds. Positive, guys
LIKE i, said a year to work. On it feels
like there's Good this isn't the last year, racing BECAUSE
i know we sometimes see they headlines that get a
little worried about, that BECAUSE i, MEAN i Love Emerald,
DOWNS i love you, guys and what you do down
there is fun AND i can't, wait all, Right joe
BEFORE i wrap things. Up so, again for folks that
(01:00:01):
want to come, Out day, two this is, tomorrow right
day two of the horse racing meat is. Tomorrow they
can they can wager on the first leg of The Triple, crown,
where for the first time In EON's, journalism could be a,
winner not just on the track the, period which would be.
Fun that hasn't happened for a. While so but tell
folks about the basically what you got going on this
(01:00:23):
year starting.
Speaker 8 (01:00:24):
Tomorrow, Yeah Derby day is, tomorrow but it's a regular
first race For Emerald downs at one fifty. Pm we
have a seven race card and we have over seven
and a half horses per. Race we have a field.
Size is gonna be. GOOD i already said that it's
gonna be a good, year so we're gonna have some
good Racing. Tomorrow The derby goes at. Four we're actually
(01:00:46):
going to open our fifth floor at seven thirty am
Because Churchill down starts early and there's a big. Interest
there's a bunch of great races, there of, course highlighted
by The derby at. Four we have a hat contest
every year On Derby. Day it's free to check in
at our customer service center on track level between noon
and three and you'll get photographed and we have some
(01:01:07):
nice prizes in The Derby day hat contest and just you,
know just a good crowd every time On Derby. DAY
i mean there's a lot of one time of year
fans and it is, tomorrow so we're ready for. You
as far as The derby, goes you, Know i'm here
at the track five days a week. PLUS i pass
on a lot of strong. FAVORITES i like to watch
(01:01:27):
him run and see if they do. Well but as
far as, BETTING i like to take a price now and.
Then So i'm going to pick final gambit number three
thirty to one morning. LINE i see he was quite
a bit less than that this morning from early. Wagering
he's got a really fine trainer And Brad. Cox he's
coming off two big. Wins he'll be lagging, back BUT
(01:01:48):
i think he's going to make a good. Run final
gambit is My Kentucky derby pick.
Speaker 2 (01:01:53):
YOU i, mean exactly what'sn't exactly for? Me let me
do me boxing exactly for?
Speaker 8 (01:01:57):
Me sure he got oh, WELL i would put journalism.
In he just has done everything. Good he can stalk
the pace and he finishes. Well so final gambit journalism
and cold. Battle so Final gambit's number, Three journalism is
(01:02:18):
number eight and Cold battles number. Sixteen how about a
three eight sixteen exact the.
Speaker 2 (01:02:24):
Box let's do, that, Baby let's do. That let's go
down there and win some money this, Year emimial. Downs
so you guys are Racing Saturday sunday and after, that
what days a week do you?
Speaker 8 (01:02:32):
Go you, know we're going to take This sunday off
after The Kentucky, derby but after this weekend we'll Be
Saturday sunday at one point. Fifty we'll pick Up friday
nights In, june and looking forward to a really good
season and we're working on next.
Speaker 2 (01:02:46):
YEAR i love. It that's good. News that's great. News, Actually,
joe we'll see down there at some. Point i'll grab
my Buddy Kenny reads and we'll be down there at some.
Point And shrek and the rest of the crew that
are all into they have that little ownership program down.
THERE i think they're. Into so we'll see you soon this.
Summer all, Right that is.
Speaker 8 (01:03:03):
Great, yeah The Emerald Grason, club it's still uh, uh

Speaker 2 (01:03:11):
That thank, you thanks a, Lot. Joe That's joe with. You,
yeah that's A i Appreciate joe jumping on. You if
you go to the, website you can find you can
actually own a, horse which is kind of. Cool you
can get a piece of. It, okay let's get to
text four nine four to five one on the still
unnamed unrestricted free. Agent text line four nine four five
one is the text line can ask why? TRACK i
(01:03:37):
just saw. This my tracks aren't taking win plays show this.
Speaker 4 (01:03:40):
YEAR i don't know what that.
Speaker 2 (01:03:42):
Means what does that? Mean? Mitchell can you see? That
you see that text on what that? MEANS i do see.
Speaker 12 (01:03:47):
THAT i assumed that they would accept those that's because
that would be the part of the ones.
Speaker 2 (01:03:53):
There, yeah, yeah from the two Four. OH i don't
know what you. Mean i'm not sure what you. Mean
you can find that off because that's base that's what
you do in. HORSES i mean that what you. Do
you don't win a lot of money on a.
Speaker 9 (01:04:04):
Show.
Speaker 2 (01:04:04):
Bet to be honest with, You i'm a big fan
of the box. Exactly that's that's That's i'm a big
fan of. THAT i know it's probably not the best
way to do, it but it's kind of makes it
more fun along the. Way what's that? Options some? Options,
yeah and with he just gave it to you right.
There let's, SEE i got the day off. YESTERDAY i
Played eagles talent and got paired up With andrew's dad's.
(01:04:25):
COUSIN i was wearing a crack In heady said. Him
my nephew talks about them on the. Radio there you,
go all, right it's that brush with greatness sort, Of patrick,
Says ian And danny on the raidar together at the same.
Time absolutely love. It never imagine hearing those two together
on the. Radio it's. Awesome how do we make it
happen more? Often, Well danny And i've been friends SINCE
i got, here so we just never have had the
opportunity necessarily to do the show. Together but that was All,
(01:04:49):
jess she set it. Up But danny And i've always been,
Friends we've always gone. Along, well he worked at a
different station for a long, time so that's probably why
we knew to do it till. Now and then he's
got a new website. Going we, said, hey what's what's poppy?
On every? WEEK i love talking To. Danny to be
honest with, you our conversations on the, air much like
when we were traveling together covering The seahawks together when
he Was beat The beat. Writer we just have a
(01:05:10):
good time. TALKING i love his the way his train of.
Thought don't always agree with, him BUT i love how
he does. It let's see what else you got, One eric,
Says Josh portis had two cents with The. Hawks yeah he,
did didn't He he did have two different. Stint we talked
About Josh bortis, earlier.
Speaker 6 (01:05:25):
That's that's.
Speaker 2 (01:05:25):
Wild two five. Three we talked To Damian martinez, Earlier
seahawks draft pick out of The Miami university Of miami
Via Oregon, state and this two fight three, says as
many injuries As seahawks always, have especially running, back they're
going to Need martinez to play meaningful snaps this. YEAR
i think in an ideal world he doesn't because that
(01:05:46):
would Mean Ken walker's. Healthy but that's been a challenge
for them and you Know shart and that position just
does take its. TOLL i, mean have a guy like
the year that That Saquon barkley had last year was
obviously stistically, extraordinary but like running backs do get banged
up and it's just the nature of the. Beast you,
(01:06:08):
know most of the picks early for when you start
doing roster roulette right, now have them keeping four running
backs and those and Obviously, Walker CHARVION. A McIntosh. Martinez
there are some that would probably tell you that Maybe
kenny McIntosh is in a, battle a roster spot battle
With Damian. MARTINEZ i think they're gonna keep the four
(01:06:29):
and then they'll keep the full back as, well the
full back Being Robbie. Ootz Brady campbell that the tight
end turned full, back special teams, guy probably a candidate
for practice squad this. Early oots is a guy that's
fifth round. Pick he's not guaranteed to make the, team
but if he can play full, BACK i think that's
where he's gonna. Be but, yeah as far As martinez is,
(01:06:50):
CONCERNED i still go back to. Me it's just a,
steal like an absolute steal on the way to get.
Him let's see what else we got going. On, Oh
i'll get To Keith. Miller i'll get to you in
just a couple of. Seconds i'll get to you in
just a couple of. Seconds i'll get a couple more
do to. Too hang On refresh can you make sure
(01:07:14):
to Have Greg bill fill in more for? YOU i
don't know how to take. That is that like you'd
rather Have Greg bill on? That is that what you're?
Saying two six? HUH i don't. KNOW i do Appreciate
greg stepping in. YESTERDAY i got the knees worked, on, hopefully, hopefully,
hopefully hopefully on the road to. Recovery see what else
you got? Ian any inside news on the crack and coaching. Search,
well if it was inside, NEWS i probably couldn't share
(01:07:37):
it with, you But i'll. SPECULATE i, think SHOULD i
have the breaking news? Ready? No no no no no
no no no no. NO i Think sullivan would have
been everyone's first, pick and he's going to The. RANGERS i.
Talk it feels like he's leaning Towards, philadelphia although that's
just probably Maybe philadelphia's wishful. THINKING i don't, know we
(01:07:57):
played there, obviously so he thought of highly. There his
son lives In, seattle so maybe there's a you, know
he talked about family and things like. That maybe that's.
IT i feel, that you, KNOW i Heard mark talking about,
earlier AND i don't know IF i, Agree BUT i
also don't know IF i necessarily. Disagree you, know he
was talking about going, through you, know three coaches in four,
years OR i guess this will year, five will be
(01:08:19):
three coaches in five. Years but three and, three when
it's when they hire a, guy is at a deterrent
to hiring. SOMEBODY i don't think so for this. Reason
AND i Asked Ron francis this a week and a
half ago when we were at at THE. Caci it's kind
of like AN nfl coaching, job or AN nba coaching,
job or A Major League baseball managerial. Job those are
(01:08:40):
a little. Different but let's just use the three, SPORTS, NBA, NFL.
Nhl there's a. Limit there's thirty TWO nfl head coaching.
Jobs there's thirty TWO nhl head coaching. Jobs there's thirty
head coaching jobs in THE. Nba those are highly, coveted
very highly of it did and even a bad job
(01:09:03):
is probably a good job depending on who you. Are,
now sometimes you can pick and choose if you're on the,
Sideline but if you're on the street and on the,
SIDELINE i don't know how much you want to pick and.
Choose AND i think that this organization has has shown
their willingness to spend money on training, facility how they,
travel how they take care of their, players and the
coaching staff and their staff frankly as a, whole they
(01:09:23):
do things first. Class here do the crack and so.
Uh the only downside would, be, yeah they have fired
coaches in consecutive, Years but, hey guess what that happens
sometimes because they want to be they want to be,
good like they want to be, good they want to
get back to the. PLAYOFFS i have nothing wrong with.
That along the, way all, right thank, You ryan And.
Scottsdale Happy, Friday Eango. Mariners that's, it and we'll finish.
(01:09:43):
OFF i did mention That Keith miller won along the.
Way we did get A Keith miller. One it says
for all of, us for all of us that predict
The mariners offensive struggles this. YEAR i got two words for.
You it's. Early, yeah, Exactly, keith it. Is really it
COULD i guess the it's, Early mitchell could go the
other way, around, too, right. Buddy they could go like
like the it's. Early the struggling could also, Be, hey

let's just hope this. Continues throughout the year seventh straight
