Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good show coming up today. We're gonna have fun. We
have our friends Chris and Nate. The Mollywop guys are
gonna join us coming up here in just a few
minutes one twenty this afternoon. We'll do them. I wanted
to get a Moulliwop in this week. Listen. The reputation
is that those guys are nothing but negative, and that's
not true. Far from it. Things are going well, we
talk about things going well. Things are going bad, then
(00:21):
we talk about it that way. So when things are
going well, I do not want to miss an opportunity
to talk good things about the Seattleranners Baseball Club with
Nat and Chris, brought to you by Simply Seattle, Simply
Seattle dot com. We'll get to that coming up at
one twenty today and then two o'clock. A number of
things I want to hit on. We'll get some. We'll
get some NFL in a little bit at two ots
underway Seahawks OTAs for US US being media that we
(00:43):
can go watch and see start next week. Bob Candota
wrote a great story in the Times today, So did
Michael Seawan Do goar on the athletic You know what
do you watch What are you looking for? All that
kind of fun stuff, And I'll get to that at
two o'clock because I mean, it's really the storylines for
Seattle are are are fun this year in terms of
o ta's mini camp and training camp. So we'll get
(01:04):
some NFL talk in coming up to and I say fun.
What I mean by fun is again, I think this
team is being vastly underrated, overlooked. I think that the
holes are are minimal and uh, I mean they're significant
in terms of the positions are in. But we'll get
to that two o'clock today. Anders I wrote this down
just in in just some some show notes. Well, listen, okay, okay,
(01:30):
we're gonna go behind the curtain is all we want
to do. Let's do it.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Let's do it.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
There are some in this business that literally will script
out a show, okay. Others jot down some notes and
others wing it. Yeah, I'm one of the two ladder.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Sometimes it's it's the third one, sometimes.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Just the third one. It just depends on the day.
I think it's because I think in our format, you
gotta be conversational. But sometimes you know, there's there's things
I don't want to forget and so usually like I
will even on the show sheet. What have y'all just
kind of jopped down a couple of notes. This is
this is my this is my deep thinking, my great analysis.
This is you don't listen. You can get good analysis
(02:09):
for in baseball a lot of places. You can subscribe
to The Athletic and read with Jason Starcas or you
know Sarahs. You can go to Joe Shean dot com.
You can listen to the postcast with Chris and Andrews.
You can read My Light back the Light with Nathan.
You go a lot of different places. Right. You can
get some nerd numbers from guys like Luke Arkins and
others the locked on with with your guys that do
(02:30):
it during the daytime, you can get a lot. You
won't get this anywhere else. Okay, Ready, ready, Mariners, roll
over Nationals, cal is great, Logan Evans is fun? Do
anything else? No, we don't, okay, Like, like, what else
do we need? Why did I miss? I mean?
Speaker 3 (02:49):
I mean you're you're getting better last two games, okay,
including a home run.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Let let me get let me get to this because
you you wrote it down in the update and the idea. Yeah,
I had to chocolate it. Maybe you can give me
a reason, I'll ask Natan Chris. Okay, okay, Cal nineteen
home runs, number one of the American League, number two
in Major League Baseball behind some guy named Otani. Pretty
good at baseball, that guy who's gonna pitch after the
All Star break. It sounds like to you he's hitting
(03:17):
ninety seven and ninety eight and his bullpen sessions right now, My.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
God, that's unfair.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
It's kind of unfair, like you could say he's a
unicorn and that's not even right now.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Yeah, because like he still steals bases, he has like
top sprint speed, like he does everything.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
But Cal's also a catcher and you just don't see
numbers like that from catchers anymore. And it's not like
he's hitting one ninety with nineteen home runs either, right,
Like he's getting on base, he's doing everything he needs
to do. Okay, but this is the thing. So the
Marriers had this in their notes postgame notes. I think
it came for that. Sarah Langs is who put it up. Yeah,
and she's she's the latest battling als Is that right?
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Okay, and is just really good at what she does.
But help explain this to me. Uh, after fifty three games,
cal Rawley has more home runs than something something something like,
what what's the fifty three home what's fifty three games mean?
Speaker 2 (04:10):
All right, I'll help me. I'll put it in perspective
a little.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Bit, am I missing the one sixty two? Is there
some sort of like.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
It's not saying it the year.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
It's not saying that this record is like, Okay, this
is what's going to stand the test of time or
anything like that. It's more like he's on pace to
do something that hasn't been done by a person that
catches more often than any other position in MLB history.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Okay, so fifty three is significant.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
Why I mean, it's just it's because that's where they
are at at this point the season.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
I love baseball. This is this is baseball. This is
baseball the nutshell. And by the way, Tim Booth stops
stepping on Alex Mayer's coach.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
I saw that recently, saw that.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Tweet last night. Come on, leave the the nerd stats
and the obscure stuff up to Alex, who has an
incredible job of the mayors pr staff and in baseball
information Yep. Listen, I joke about that he's the best
catcher in the game. He's the most complete catcher in
the game. It's not even close. Larry Stone was writing
some stuff today about just Orr tweeting some stuff out.
He will be the catcher for Tmusa at the World
(05:07):
Baseball Classic next year whatever they call that thing now
and will be. And there's not even a question he's
the best American catcher in the game. He is doing
things at a position that is so demanding and maybe
more so now even than it was before, all due
respect to Johnny Bench and others. And here's why. And
I'll talk to this about with Nathan Chris in a minute.
(05:30):
I joke about fifty three. But the available information these days,
and the pre scouting reports these days, and all of
the stuff that goes into being a catcher and calling
a game for a pitcher is twenty four one hundred fold.
Whatever you wanted whatever then it used to be. Johnny Bench,
(05:52):
Pad Rodriguez, guys like that that were the greats of
their time, and they were great. Taking nothing away from them,
but what it's on the plate of today's catcher in
terms of all the mental things that he has to
basically prep like a quarterback in football.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
I think more so because you're doing it for five
different starters who have different pitch mixes, who you're going
against different teams.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
And somewhere around sixteen different hitters. Yeah, exactly right in
the course of a three game series.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
To mention, he's a switch hitter as well, so he
does from both sides of the plate.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Right. So what he's doing right now, we knew it's
we know it's incredible, right, we all know it's incredible.
But what he's doing now, it's just it's really remarkable.
I just got stay healthy, keep it up. He's in
a lot of ways carrying this team on his shoulders,
on his very broad shoulders, while you know, others slip
or injured. What have you. We got the injury update yesterday.
(06:44):
Rollbos is out for a while still, September maybe at
the earliest. That's what Justin Hollander said yesterday. So all
those things, it's I joke about fifty three games only
in this sense. It's baseball has random numbers they just
throw out there, and because you can just kind of
extrapolate and make things good. I don't need fifty three
I can just tell you he's the best catcher in
the game. Yeah, and he's he may be one of
(07:05):
the most fun players to watch. He may be Seattle's
most important athlete to his team right now. Sorry, Sam Darnold,
he may be. Yeah, he may be the most significant,
most important player that we have right now in this
city for his team because he does so much.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
I know a little bit, but can I just say
one more thing about cal Real quick. There was a
story that came out yesterday leading into it was in Houston,
so they were like a Game three or Game four
of Houston, and he was already preparing for whoever was
starting that day, but he had like took aside Logan
Evans preparing for his start against Washington, talking about like
how he's going to break down this team. This is
(07:40):
when he's in the middle of another series. That's how
much he has to do. And Logan Evans talked about
how important it was and how much of a leader
he is and helping young starters in this staff just
kind of take the next step and helping them out.
And you're starting to see that with whoever comes in
and pitches, and that's just it's crazy to me and
you mentioned it. How much they have on their plate
to deal with every single day.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
It's there is a joy in Little Evans scheme too.
That's a lot of fun. We'll talk about that all right.
The Mulliwop guys are standing by. Nathan and Chris coming
up next. Brought to you by Simply Seattle, Simply Seattle

you're listening to the open, you probably had a little
bit of a panic attack there for week Monday. God,
that was Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Already, but not Monday.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
Don't worry, it's not Monday. It's Wednesday. But we did
not want a week go by because I mentioned the
first segment. I think there is sometimes a thought that
the Mollywop guys are only negative and only here good
when it's negative. It's kind of like, you know, the
only time Husky Hawks is a good show is when
they lose right after a post game. But that's not
the case with the Mullywop guys. It is a case
with the Husky Hawks, but not with these guys. No,
(09:42):
we are positive when need be and we are negative
when need be. And that's why Nathan and Chris are
here today. And as always, boys, we start with some
opening segments or opening statements. Chris Crawford, away, you go
your first today. It's Chris there. I thought he was
follow on a second, Oh, there is, there is.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
You know what I heard? I apparently you have to
take the mute button off of your phone to talk.
So that's something I learned today. So thank you my friend. Yeah, yeah,
I want to host the radio some someday. Doesn't know
how to mute button.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
Word.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
I think that it was a really nice little week.
You know, it ends disappointing with the losing three out
of four, but you know, we're prisoners of the moment,
and yesterday was one of the most complete games I've
seen the Seattle Mariners play, and they've been playing pretty
darn well. The pitching has been good. There's been a
little bit of good luck with some of that pitching,
some line drives going into gloves, but we will take
(10:42):
that for sure. We're seeing star play from Julio Rodriguez.
We are seeing beyond star play. We're seeing MVP level
from Cal Rawley. That's been really fun to see. Fun
to see some offense from the bottom of the order.
Leody Tavaris has had some nice moments. It's been a
fun little few games. And now you get to go
home and play two of the three not so good
(11:05):
teams with the Twins stanwiched in a chance to do
some damage, and I think Mariner fans should be pretty happy.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Nathan Bishop, but where you go.
Speaker 6 (11:14):
Yeah, I think it's a good thing that we're prisoners
of the moment because and they should be thinking they're
lucky stars that we didn't have a show Memorial Day
because I had some heat for him from the last week.
But to Chris's point, then they had to go and
play a really gosh darn good baseball game yesterday and
take all the wind out of my sales. So I
mostly just want to talk about just how damn good
(11:34):
cal Rawley is right now, because I think that it's
beholden to us as Mariner fans and as us as
people who talk about the Mariners. When something really really
cool is happening, we need to make sure that we
give it its due. And I'm not going to go
super far into the weeds here, but I just wanted
to check and here's just a little thing for you.
Cal Rawley also already has the second and fourth most
(11:58):
home runs in a single season in any catcher season
of the past twenty years. Those are his first two
years in the big leagues. He is rapidly on pace
to eclipse that he could challenge Salvi Perez for the
most home runs by any catcher in the last twenty years.
He currently has the highest slugging percentage of any catcher
any season since two thousand and five, just beating out
(12:21):
two thousand and nine Joe Mauer. We got to throw
it out to Chris who already touched on it in
his open I think about a month ago he said
he thought that cal Rawley could win an MVP someday.
And we keep circling back, Man, but we are one
Aaron Judge slump or missing a little bit of time
away from cal Rawley being the front runner.
Speaker 7 (12:41):
For the American League MVP.
Speaker 6 (12:42):
By f four, he is the second most valuable player
on the positional side in all of.
Speaker 7 (12:48):
Major League Baseball. So I could talk.
Speaker 6 (12:51):
About this for an hour, but I don't want to
just hog all the airtime. I just want Marrior fans
to appreciate what you're seeing. It doesn't matter if this
continues for the entire season or not. You have seen
the two greatest months of any Mariners catcher in the
history of this franchise. So however much you enjoy big
Dumper enjoy him more.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
I I I don't expect you guys to listen to
every second of this show. I would appreciate it. You're
both very good, You're both very good demographics for me,
and it would be awesome. But I don't. I mentioned
I mentioned in the in the first segment Fellas that
I think I think you could make a strong argument
that cal Rawly is the most important athlete in Seattle
to his team. I I Sam Darnold hasn't taken a
(13:31):
snap yet, you know the krack and don't have that
guy necessarily yet. You know, Seahawk wise, I'm just kind
of thinking, I mean, Witherspoon's good, but he's not that
level good. Uh So I think he's the most important
player for his for his team in Seattle sports right now. Uh,
Sue's not with a storm anymore. So there's nobody there
(13:52):
that's that even it comes close to resonating. So you know,
Morris has always hurt. You'll go on and on and on.
So but Chris, if I can go backtle bit, this
is where I love your expertise and your knowledge. When
they drafted this guy, what were the projections? Because I
have to think even the most the highest in the ceiling,
and what they're hoping for, he's exceeded those.
Speaker 5 (14:14):
So it's so funny because I was talking to a
former scouting director about this not too long ago, because
I was very high on kal Ralli and I had
him as one of my top thirty players for that
year's draft, and I asked the scouting director, why do
I keep seeing this guy talked about in the fourth
round the fifth round? And he flat out answered me
because he's fat. And that was the thing, is that
(14:37):
everybody was so worried about big dumpers big dumper that
they were really nervous that he wasn't going to be
athletic enough to stick behind the plate. They liked the offense,
and then you know, kind of during his senior year
he lost a little bit away. Then he started moving
a little bit better and so the projections went up,
but the bats started to suffer a little bit. So,
(14:58):
you know, he was considered a top one hundred prospects
and the Mariners, I think took him right in that range.
He might have been like the ninety ninth or hundredth
players selected something along those lines. But to say that
he's improved his stocks, not just as a prospect, but
as a major league player. He is gone from being
like I talked about it with you and Shockey, and
(15:20):
I guess Nathan was still there. I choose to kind
of forget whether or not he's part of the show.
Sometimes I'm just kidding. Make good practice, good practice, don't care,
it's totally care. It's I talked about how much I
liked him and thought he was going to be a
really nice starting backstop, and I have audio proof because
I record everything because I'm a narcissist. But I didn't
(15:43):
think we were going to get anywhere close to this level.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Man.
Speaker 5 (15:46):
I thought we were talking about a very serviceable starting catcher.
But to answer your question, cal Rawley was a guy
people liked, but they thought he was overweight, and the
fact that he was an overweight backstop made him more
of a top one fifty type of selection rather than
a guy. If you did a redraft, now you're probably
taking in the top five in a loaded and that
(16:08):
the draft class.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
Uh yeah, I find that funny. I know that you know,
the game has changed a little bit over the years
in athleticism and nutrition and training and all those things.
Kind of come into play, Nathan. I didn't know, Nathan
that you had to be like, you know, superstar ouphit.
I know you had to be like a you know
built you know, move like Jackson Smith and Jigba to
(16:30):
play catcher. I didn't know that.
Speaker 7 (16:32):
Aparently, No, it turns out that it's hope for yeah guys.
Speaker 6 (16:34):
But like you and me and we could be major
league catchers if we just hit twenty home runs before too.
I wanted to add one more thing too, just a
kind of excision. I was talking about cal Rawley stats
and just going by airport. I just wanted to point
out we all like Dan Wilson and think that it's
at least at worst amusing that the Mariners went a
lot of games with him as the manager, and.
Speaker 7 (16:53):
He's a member of the Manors Hall of Fame.
Speaker 6 (16:56):
Cal Rawly has already three more more f War career
than Dan Wilson in about forty of the games. So
right now cal Rawley with a bullet is the best
catcher in marriage history. Already, we're talking about a guy
that if he at the end of this year, is
a Maritors Hall of Famer if he does not play
(17:16):
another game, which we all hope and pray he will
play many, many, many many more.
Speaker 7 (17:20):
With this franchise.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
Well, Chris, Chris, I think it's interest. I mean with Cal.
You now, I'm this is not doing I'm not trying
to be the god. I'm not trying to be the
negative guy with you dudes. But I'm gonna like the bars.
The bar's not high, right, Like, the bar's not very
high at that position in this enfranchise history. I mean,
it's it's like, I mean, what is it. I mean,
Dan was Dan was a good player, right like Dan
(17:44):
Wilson was a good player. He was never a like
perennial All Star or anything like that. He was was okay, right,
So the bar's not very high. I think it's more
important for you know, for me, I just think it's
more important to look at Cal next to his current
day peers or other players in baseball. And you know,
and Nathan mentioned Chris that it's like we're one Aaron
(18:06):
Judge two week stint on the injured list or me.
I don't know if he's gonna slump away, how realistic
is it? Did he still he's probably number two right
now right in baseball in terms of the MVP voting
in the American League.
Speaker 5 (18:20):
Yeah, I would say he's number two right now. Bobby
Wood Junior was given him a little bit of a
run for the money for the runner up spot, which
is kind of a weird phrase to say, but yeah,
I mean, Aaron Judge is going to run away with
his MVP if he keeps playing at that level. But
right now, if he took the vote, right now, cal
Raley's getting that second place vote. I've talked to some
people who have votes who have said that it would
(18:41):
be his second place guy right now. So it's pretty cool.
And you know, we should expect some slumping from Big
Dumber he's had. This is obviously his best year of
his career by far so far, and weren't a one
third point. But we've seen cal Raley go through some
slumps because he's not a guy who relies on hitting
for average to getting his numbers. He's a guy who
(19:02):
draws a lot of walks and he hits a lot
of homers. By the way, He's on pace to hit
thirty two home runs away from T Mobile Park this year.
Solemna Be brought that up with me because they were
asking if he had a chance at the all time
catcher record, which is forty eight home runs, and I
said maybe, but it's home park probably plays away well.
The fact that destroying baseball away from Seattle, on top
(19:22):
of do it okay in Seattle too, suggests that he
can do that. But yeah, I mean there'll be some swumping,
but you know what doesn't swump. Defense doesn't swump. And
as long as he remains one of the best defensive
backstops in all of baseball on top of providing this
type of offenses numbers, even if it's a semblance of
these kind of offenses numbers, he's going to be in
that discussion. I will be shocked if kl Rale doesn't
(19:45):
finish outside the top five, or excuse me, if kyl
Raley finishes outside of the top five and MVP voting,
he's been that good in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
It is Mollywalk Monday on a Wednesday, brought to you
by our good friends at Simply Seattlesimply Sale dot comy
wa up fifteen at checkout. Let me move to a
couple other topics. This was my insight from this. You
don't get this on the Mariner's postcast on locked on.
You don't get this kind of insight with with Andrews
and Chris Mariner's wolver Nationals Kyl is great, Logan Evans
(20:17):
is fun. Those are those are my bullet points from
last night. Let me don that's insight, baby. Let me
get to Logan Evans. Eight innings, eighty eight pitches long,
eighth inning in the dugout top of the eighth is
you know our bottom of the age? I should say,
as Valley and Goldie kind of mentioned, that's probably what
prevented him from coming out and getting that complete game.
(20:39):
But Chris, let's go with you. Who again is Logan
Evans and why is he doing what he's doing? Wow?
Speaker 5 (20:45):
I think if there's a little bit of context to this,
it's it's fair to say that Logan Evans had a
little bit of good luck and here we go. Here,
here's your negative nancies for your Molly watt Men Wednesday.
He had five swings and myths in the entire game,
and I think three of those were in the first inning,
So there was some luck. There were some line drives
that went right to some folks. However, his command was impeccable.
(21:10):
He threw everything for strikes, and he was locating everything
outside of one ball that was hit by James Wood
that they said went four hundred and forty eight feet
that's a mile and a half too short. That ball
was absolutely destroyed, but they outside of that, he located
really well. And that's how Logan Evans is going to succeed.
(21:30):
It's similar to Emerson Hancock without the ability Everson Hancock
all of a sudden throwing ninety seven miles per hour now,
which is really fun to see. But it's similar to
that in that they have to locate and they have
to have a quality defense behind him. And give a
ton of credit to the Mariners defense for being really
good yesterday as well. It gets lost in the shuffle
because you win by eight runs and you have a
(21:51):
guy throw eight innings, but the defense was really really
good yesterday as well. He's done enough for me to
believe that he can be a quality back ends starter.
And he's still only twenty three years old. There's time
for him to get better. He throws that whole kitchen
sink at you, but the sinker in particular, and the
sweeper was pretty good yesterday as well. He did a
solid job. Do I think if you were just watching
(22:13):
the start and you didn't know what was going on,
you would say eight innings of one run baseball with
I believe three hits loud on eighty eight pitches. No,
I don't think you would, because there was a lot
of loud contact that got caught. But that doesn't mean
that Logan Evans didn't pitch well and doesn't deserve a
ton of credit for being a rookie who handled a
major league lineup flawed, as though it may be on
a pretty solid start for a guy I think making
(22:36):
his sixth or seventh career bock.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
Oh, I can toss it right to Nathan. Nathan, is
this really a flawed lineup? No way, I think Chris
is a mistaken there.
Speaker 6 (22:44):
Come on, yeah, I mean I now see I'm going
to be I got to be the praise guy here,
So Chris, we went a little bit negative there. I
think that what is awesome about the Logan Evans start
and to a lesser extent Emerson Hancock, maybe even the
same extendance Emerson Hancock. This is such a praiseworthy moment
for both Evans and but for the marriage pitching development,
(23:06):
which I don't think we've seen quite the returns on
the last couple of years that we did previously, and
how could they possibly live up to the standard that
they said when they're graduating Bryce Miller and Brian wu
and George Kirby and all those guys. But you know what,
what is Logan Evans's realistic kiling? If you take a
random guy, a random starting pitcher out of Triple A
(23:26):
and chuck him into emergency duty because you've got four,
three or four of your starting rotation on the IL,
the expectation is you are going to be grateful if
you get two times through the lineup with Evan giving
up no more than four runs, right. Instead, the marriagors
are able to coax the best possible the best possible
outcome for maybe a guy with a limited skill set
(23:48):
like Logan Evans. Like, do I think that he's anything
more than a number five starter on a good team.
Speaker 7 (23:53):
Not really, But it doesn't matter.
Speaker 6 (23:54):
Mariors are so good at getting the best out of
guys with limited stuff, limited experience, uh, limited skill set
that I just I really took my cap to the
organization because, like to Chris's point, you play if Logan
Evan's pitches like that the exact same way every time
he goes out. He's probably not getting through five innings
lots of hard contact, lots of hard hit balls, but
(24:17):
that's still so much better than what most teams would
be getting out of going this far down their organizational
depth chart with starting pitching.
Speaker 7 (24:24):
So I think it's a great thing. I think it's
really really great.
Speaker 6 (24:28):
It has saved their butts and hopefully they can get
this rotation healthy and they won't need him to be that.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
Moving forward, real quick, mister, what what world are we
living in right now? Where in the same topic.
Speaker 6 (24:42):
You want to talk about the hitters you want to
talk about the hitters, mister Furnett, we can, we can
go downs.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
Don't worry.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
I'm just absolutely my head is spinning right now.
Speaker 5 (24:53):
Christ The only thing I was going to add is,
let's not forget that this is the same guy who
gave up three home runs to double A Montgomery in
his last start aka the Chicago White Suck. So there
have been some flaws there, There have been some situations,
but all things considered, and I talked about this on
the postcas it was an excellent start from Logan Evans
(25:14):
and he deserves a ton of credit for just founding
the strike zone against the lineup that doesn't drop locks anyway,
so you can take advantage of it.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
Okay, there's there's a there's I'm hoping because I got
I've got two bigger questions. I want to ask you guys. Uh,
can you stick around for one more segment?
Speaker 3 (25:33):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (25:34):
Yeah, Nathan, Nathan, Okay, perfect, because there's two things I
want to hit on when we come back, and I'll
tea One is six man rotation. That's number one. We'll
hit on that a little bit. And what and basically
kind of what to do as we get closer to
having Gilbert and Miller back into the rotation, So what
to do there? And number two and all this is
(25:56):
the bigger tease. Mute them, Andrews, because I don't want
any reaction on the air. What would you? Is this
maybe time to think about moving one of those six
or seven guys to see if you can upgrade then
offense for a team that right now has the third
best odds to win the American League at plus seven hundred.
Run to your sportsbook right now. All right, let's get
(26:17):
to that. We'll do that next malliwap Monday on Wednesday
continues niney three point three KTERFM.
Speaker 8 (26:24):
Prood casting live from the R and R Foundation Specialist
Broadcast Studio. Now back to Ian Fornz, powered by Seattle's
closest sports book Snow call me Casino on Sports Radio
ninety three point three KJR FM.
Speaker 1 (26:41):
All Right, I mulliwap Monday on a Wednesday, brought to
you by Simply Seeadlesimply Seattle dot com. Moulliwop fifteen at
checkout for your discount. They've got the new Pinstripe Mariners
teas there. Go to simply sale dot com. Go check
it out. Jump on the web, go check it out
right now for driving, wait till in. Okay, Well, some
runs in the first four career seasons in Mariner's history.
(27:02):
Cal Rawley ninety three, Alvin Davis ninety two, Julio Rodriguez
ninety Wow, that's amazing. Those guys are just on a
heater right now, Cal and Julio. The rest of the
lineup as Nathan, I didn't let him get too deep
into it, insinuated a little bit sketchy. We'll get to
the trade question in a second. Let me start this
with Chris Daniel Craner MLB dot como a story. Depoto
(27:25):
kind of downplayed the thought of a six man rotation,
But is there apostive we've talked about this before. Would
they ever go six man?
Speaker 5 (27:34):
I think that they were consider it if they felt
like that they had six uppareschial on starters. I don't
think that they feel like Logan Evans and Emerson Hancock qualified.
So I don't think that you would be looking at
a six man rotation now. Some of us, I think
will depend on how George Kirby looks tonight. Like if
George Kirby pitches really well, I think he can squatch
(27:56):
the six man rotation pretty easily. Maybe if Brake Miller
comes doesn't look so great, you consider that six man
rotation again. But if Kirby comes in and he throws
three and two thirds innings of three run baseball, maybe
you do consider giving him that extra day. So I
think it's possible, But a lot of that will depend
on how Kirby Miller, and then of course Gilbert when
(28:16):
he gets back, how those guys are actually looking before
they actually add in Evans or a Handcock to that
sixth spot.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
Nathan agree or disagree.
Speaker 7 (28:24):
Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 6 (28:25):
I think we're just playing a lot of what if
between now and even having to make that decision. George
Kirby's about to make the second start of the year.
Bryce Miller has some mysterious thing going on in his
elbow that the team says they understand, but it's going
to cause him pain and they think that he might
have to amputate his arm, but it's only going to
make him miss another starter or too. I don't know
exactly what's going on there. Logan Gilbert still has to
(28:48):
rehabn't come back healthy. There's just a lot of things
that have to happen between now and them having this
rotation fully up and running, and they.
Speaker 7 (28:57):
Have to make that kind of call.
Speaker 6 (28:58):
And I just think it's the kind of thing we
can talk about, probably like closer to the All Star break,
to really see if that's.
Speaker 7 (29:03):
Something the team might have to make a decision on.
My instinct is similar to Chris.
Speaker 6 (29:07):
I just don't think Logan Evans and Emerson Hancock are
good enough collectively or individually to force the team into
that kind of an because from my understanding, pictures don't
like it. So unless the team is fully on unless
the pitchers are fully on board.
Speaker 7 (29:22):
With the idea. I don't know why you would push
for that.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
That was just a question, and just a tip of
the cap to Marco is all because I know how
much he enjoyed hearing those questions, those thoughts to back
in the day. Okay, Marco, your ace, that's not good
enough to be on the right roster for the playoffs. Okay,
let's and min how far we have come? Chris, the
two guys at the back end, Hancock six and Evan seven,
(29:49):
would probably not be who I'm referring to. It would
be one of the other five guys. There was talk
in the off season about Julio a Luis Castile trade.
This lineup still has holes and cal and Julio and
you know, God knows what's going to happen with Polanco
in the long run. All those things. And this is
a team I mentioned. They are a number plus seven hundred.
(30:09):
They're the third favorite to win the American League right now,
between behind the Yankees and the Tigers. They are in
the midst of what could be a really special season.
Are you looking around? I know it's early, but considering
moving anybody in that starting six five, six seven rotation.
Speaker 5 (30:29):
That's a really good question. I would say you would
consider moving Hancock and Evans. But if you are moving
one of those two guys, definitely not moving both, I
don't think. But if you're considering moving one of those guys,
you probably got to get another starter back, or at
the very least, you need to get somebody who's capable
of being a bulk pitcher, somebody who could work after
(30:51):
an opener for three inning, similar to what they saw
from Casey Lawrence in his battle between landing on Toronto
and cl forty five thousand times before his career ended.
You would have to get a starter back. That being said,
if that's gonna be the difference between you getting one
of the upper echelon bats, if somebody is really interested
in Emerson Hancock or Logan Evans, you got to do it.
(31:14):
You've got to include one of those guys, because you've
got some other starting pitchers who are on the rise
in the farm system. You've got Ryan Sloan, You've got
your Angelos, Saint Jay. You have those guys who hopefully
are going to be ready for you in twenty seven
to twenty eight plus the fact that, like you just
don't get a chance to get those upper echelon bats
very often. So if that's the difference, yeah, you absolutely
(31:36):
have to consider moving one of those guys. I'm not
trading George Kirby. I'm not trading Logan Gilbert Luis Castillo.
I would have to get a really really, really really
good bat for him because I just don't think that
you're going to be able to replace him in the
rotation with those guys that we just mentioned, So you
better be upgrading offensively and getting a starting pitcher to
go with it, just as a you know, a safety
(31:59):
valve type thing. So yeah, I would consider moving one
of those young guys. And those are going to be
the guys who people have a lot of interest in
because they're cops controlled and they can be cheap for
you for another four or five years. But yeah, I
think you have to consider it. But if you do,
I would definitely be looking to add another pitcher, just
as a safety bolt.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
Nathan.
Speaker 6 (32:19):
You know, here's where I'm going to stand on all
this trade stuff. The twenty twenty five Seattle Marriers need
to try to make and win their first World Series
this year. Any sort of transactional conversation needs to start
and end with the idea of does it make the
twenty twenty five team better right now and make it
more likely that they will win this year's World Series
full stop. I'm not one hundred percent convinced now. This
(32:42):
is to Chris's point. If teams are fixating on Emerson
Hancock and Logan Evans, and that's kind of the thing
that's keeping them from getting a frontline hitter that can
really improve this lineup and help solidify it where it
has holes everywhere.
Speaker 7 (32:57):
That's fine.
Speaker 6 (32:58):
My strong preference would be to take Jerry's big shiny
farm that everybody talks about all the time and trade
those guys because they are not going to.
Speaker 7 (33:07):
Hold the twenty twenty five Seattle Manders.
Speaker 6 (33:09):
There's no guarantee they will ever provide any value to
this organization on.
Speaker 7 (33:13):
The field whatsoever.
Speaker 6 (33:15):
And if there is good at drafting and developing, as
they really really like to pretend that they are, I
shouldn't say pretend. If they like to believe that they are,
then they will easily backfill whatever.
Speaker 7 (33:24):
Hole they leave in their farm by trading from that.
Speaker 6 (33:26):
So if they must trade from guys who are providing
them production on this year's team. Fine, but please see
if people will take one of their You pick a prospect,
I don't even care. Just trade from the farm, make
this team better now, and pick a position to acquire
a player in because there are holes everywhere besides left field,
(33:47):
center field, and catcher.
Speaker 1 (33:49):
And I know we will revisit this down the road. Okay,
final thoughts, Nathan Quick final thought from you. Twins series,
I think is the key this week. We'll look forward
to that. Some final thoughts on that. Where can we
find your work?
Speaker 6 (34:02):
Yeah, you can find my work at the light bat
dot substack dot com.
Speaker 7 (34:06):
It is free. There are two things every week.
Speaker 6 (34:09):
We're having Meg Rally, the managing editor of Fangrafts, on
the podcast tomorrow.
Speaker 7 (34:13):
I'm excited about that.
Speaker 6 (34:15):
As far as my final thoughts with the Twin series,
I think we're just back to just wanting to win series.
The Twins are not a great team, but they're also
not a terrible team. This isn't a slam dunk like
you're playing the Chicago White Sox or the Washington Nationals
and one of these other teams that forget the part
of being a baseball organization is that you actually have.
Speaker 7 (34:31):
To build a baseball team.
Speaker 6 (34:32):
So I think anytime you're winning a series, you're perfectly fine.
And it's a good time to try to get hot
now because the Astros are not going away, and there's
a really tough stretch coming up.
Speaker 7 (34:43):
With seventeen games in seventeen days. So win the twin series.
Speaker 6 (34:47):
Talk to another happy met next Monday and five days,
and we'll be.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
Very uncomfortable with that.
Speaker 5 (34:52):
Chris, just win these series. I was funny to say
one quick thing, give Typ France and I round of
applause when he comes in over the weekend. I know
it didn't end great, but he was a pretty darn
good Seattle Mariner and a pretty good guy in the clubhouse,
and just a pretty good guy overall. Get that guy
a nice little round of applause, like go go, go,
(35:13):
give him his flowers, as the kids like to say.
Because sure it ended in a less than ideal fashion,
but Ty France was a good player and he deserves
your your applause.
Speaker 1 (35:26):
Andrews, I'm gonna let you tease where we can find
Chris's work.
Speaker 2 (35:29):
Oh, you can find the end of my work.
Speaker 3 (35:32):
As part of the locked on Mariners postcast re live

Speaker 1 (35:46):
Did he do a good enough job, Chris, he did
a great job.
Speaker 5 (35:50):
I wanted to do one other thing, and I'm sorry
for doing this too. Not sorry, but you know, I'm
interrupting the flow. Some people know that I've had some
health stuff going on, and a lot of people have
reached out to help me with that help stuff, and
I just wanted to give a thanks because a lot
of these people are Mollywop listeners and your support has
made an incredibly difficult time a heck of a lot easier.
(36:11):
So I just wanted to say a quick thanks.
Speaker 1 (36:12):
And we were thinking, everybody, go get well, take care
of yourself, and we will all convene next week. But
Chris and Andrews tonight right after the game, the postcast
is fantastic on the Lockdown Network. All right, thanks guys,
We'll talk to next week. Thanks simply sa had Am

Jess and her family if people missed it yesterday. Her
sister died suddenly last Thursday at the very very young
age of thirty eight years old. So Jess is with
her family in New York for the next couple of weeks,
and we just send out our best to her. They're
having services today and tomorrow to lay her to rest.
So she's got two young kids. Just a tragic situation,
(38:43):
and our best goes out to Jess. But we move on.
Andrew's working hard the last few days, and I appreciate
all of his work every day. I appreciate your work, buddy,
but I know you've been doing a lot the last
couple of days.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
So by I said, it's easy for me to step
in and help help out a friend, make sure she
is able to go be with their family and everything,
and knowing what she's going through, this is nothing, so
I'm happy to do it.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
I appreciate you. Okay, a couple of things. I'm gonna
hit on a bunch of things this segment A four
nine four to five one. That is the still unrestricted
free agent text line four nine four five one. Hopefully not,
we'll find out soon, yeah, but it's out there. I'm
gonna get to some sound from Aaron Rodgers in a minute.
I'm gonna get we'll do a brief. We won't use
(39:28):
the open, We'll do a brief little daily power play
Crack and coaching Search update in just a second. As well.
OTA is underway throughout the National Football League. You're gonna
ask yourself, as we do every year, the difference between
OTA's and Mini camp. Well, OTA's aren't aren't mandatory. Mini
camps are. You can do a little bit more in
terms of the competitive nature of it, et cetera. But
(39:51):
they're underway, Seahawks out like every other team going. We're
not out there. No media is out there, Bob, Mike,
Greg Bell, all those nobody's out there right now. We'll
be out there, I believe three days next week. We're
waiting for the final confirmation on the dates it'll be open,
so we'll find out along the way. But here's the thing,
(40:12):
and and this is the this is the thing I'm
gonna I want to hit on a little bit with
the with the OTAs is, Greg wrote, Greg's written the stories,
talked about it, Bob did today, Michael, Sean Dugar and
and Andrews. If you notice, they're all kind of like
the storylines. This is where I was laughing, Yea, the storylines.
(40:32):
What are we watching?
Speaker 2 (40:33):
The storylines heading into.
Speaker 1 (40:36):
And I joke because we make fun of in our business.
But that's what we want to know. Like it's a
Seahawk fan, you want to know, Okay, what are they? Well,
I'll ask you because I I've got my own, But
what are they for you?
Speaker 3 (40:47):
The integration of Sam Darnold, I think is number one
for me. And how he you know, like shows himself
as both a quarterback and the new offense because I guess,
I mean, it is new for him, but it's also
new for the rest of the Seahawks as well. So
Clint Kogyah coming in, but also like who he is
is I like a leader. I want to see if
he's kind of be the hands on type of leader
to kind of lead the team out a little bit,
(41:09):
or if he's gonna be kind of a more behind
the scenes sort of guy. So that's that's number one
for me. I want to see just the rookies themselves.
I want to see what kind of impact they have.
But those are kind of the two main ones that
I have.
Speaker 1 (41:22):
Okay, let me, I'm gonna take us. I'll give you
myn a second, I'm take a step back. One of
the things that's good about this season for Seattle is
going into the This is an important month, by the way, Like,
make no mistake, this is an important month for every
team in the NFL. You know, I think if you know,
if you're a if you ever played the game, you
watch the game, you like. Spring football is really important
(41:42):
for colleges. Right, if you're a high school program, and
you're a good high school program, they start. Most high
school programs start next week and they have a little
bit of summer football for two or three weeks, usually
go to a camp and stuff like that. Like football
is one of those sports you spend more time preparing
than you ever do playing, right. It's kind of the
opposite of baseball, but it's a really important time. Well,
a year ago, we're coming into this thing and it
(42:03):
was an entirely new coaching staff, one return from the
Pete Carroll staff. That was it. So both sides of
the football were brand new. You mentioned it new offens.
This year, it's a new offensive staff because it just
didn't work before with Ryan Grubb and Scott Huff and
the rest of those guys. So it's a brand new
offensive staff. But the defensive staff is back. It's intact,
(42:26):
and the players are as well, and they you know,
and I think to me, I don't there's nothing really
on the defensive side that's outside of Okay, are they
gonna you know, a mental warror. Is he going to be,
you know, a nickelback. Is he going to be a
big nickel Are they going to keep Witherspoon outside? Is
he's still going to be a slot corner? You know,
a little just little things like that. What does the
(42:47):
defensive line rotation look like? Yes, but you know when
they resign, you know, they bring back Ernest Jones in
the middle linebacker, they solve that problem. There's no questions there.
You know who the two safeties are. You know, I
guess there's a little bit like and we won't know
this until September, October, November, December. Is Riekwolling going to
look like Riek Wolling from his rookie year or is
the regression going to continue? All those things kind of
(43:08):
come into play, right, right, But really on that side
of the football, I think you're gonna a You saw
as the season went on that that defense took massive
strides forward and it was one of the best defenses
in the second half of the season. So that side
of the ball, okay, whatever, Right, the offensive side is interesting,
and you know the biggest question mark is what is
the offensive line going to look like? I think it's
(43:29):
believe it or not, there's really only one major question mark,
maybe two. But we know who the two tackles are,
and unlike last year, those guys, especially Abe Lucas healthy,
first time Mabel Lucas has been healthy in a long time.
So your right tackle and your left tackle are healthy.
Huge place to start. You know who your left guard
(43:49):
is going to be. It's your first round draft pick.
You don't draft guys in the first round the offensive
line for them to sit. Grayzabels, your left guard your
set there. Now how well he plays remains to be seen, right,
But that's set right there. The next one you look
at center Olda Timmy and everyone's kind of written about
this and talked about this, and you can just judge
from what John Snyder said. It feels like Ola Timmy
(44:11):
is going to be the guy. And there are some
underlying numbers with his game last year that were pretty
pretty positive as the year went on. Once he took
over that spar starting spot when Connor Williams left right,
they were some pretty good solid Now is he going
to be an All Pro. No, probably not, but you
know you're not gonna have all pros or even Pro
bowlers at every position. Can he be solid? They're hoping,
So he looks to be the guy there. The right
(44:33):
guard position is the question mark. What part of the
threesome is going to be there? Cable do if you
want to include him the late draft pick, the sixth
round pick. Maybe there's a foursome there, but it's you know,
is it gonna be La Maya who kind of finished
the year? Is Haynes going to come back? He was
a third round pick. You dropped a guy in the
third round to start. He couldn't do it last year.
Can he do it in this new system? Or is
this maybe something that Bradford steps back up a guy
(44:55):
that did start for you a bunch of the games
last year. So that right guard position is a quick question.
Wide receiver as well. You've got two guys in Cooper
Cup and Jackson Smith and Jig But I don't fall
into the category of worrying about how they duplicate each other.
I do need to do I need a humill in
session at some point, hardcore football style. Yes, and maybe
(45:15):
he'll treat me and tell me I'm wrong. I trust
in a coaching staff with Kubiak, et cetera, that these
guys are going to find a way to make it work.
If you have two players that have some simple First
of all, they're not completely similar. They're different players. I mean,
Cooper Cup's a different body type than than Jackson Smith
and Jig but far different body type. If he's help,
(45:36):
he seemed to work pretty well with Puka Nakua went healthy, right,
So I think I'm curious to see what it looks like.
Is Horton going to be involved? You know what you know?
Is Bobo going to be involved? You know, how is
that going to look when it's all said and done.
Marquez Valdez scantling. I'm I'm a little hesitant there. I
think Horton, I think ideally is a guy you wanted
(45:57):
to take a step forward. But it's gonna be a
lot of two receivers sets, so doesn't matter tight end
same thing. You know, is Fan going to be on
this roster? We'll find out and the quarterback rotation comes
into play as well. Yes, and I think that's going
to be fun. If I'm and I don't know usually
we're kind of restricted what we can say and with
things that we see in OTAs in mini camp. Training
camp's little different. Fans are there and they're open, and
(46:19):
you know, fans are tweeting, they're saying stuff, so it's
a little bit you know, But how do they use
Jalen Milroe, like Drew Locke is your number two quarterback?
But will they have three active on game base? I
would assume so I would one hundred percent, I tell yeah.
And just judging from again what was said at the
draft during draft weekend and as you were out there,
judging from what they said, Jalen Milroe from Alabama, unique
(46:42):
skill set, raw talent, not the most accurate passer understatement, right,
but that's fine. Is does he give you some things
and some abilities to do some things that you don't
have with Sam Darnold or even Drew Locke, Yes, one
hundred percent he does. Are you going to acclimate and
kind of integrate him into the offense? Probably, So I'm
gonna be kind of fun to watch that.
Speaker 7 (47:03):
You know.
Speaker 1 (47:03):
I looked back on last year and we were all
excited to watching the details and how slow it was
and what they were doing offensively, and Grub and Cuff
and these guys, and I look back on it and
that was so so elementary and so basic, and it
was like, God, that's probably why this guy, these guys struggled.
Gino wasn't the same player. His red zone efficiency was awful.
(47:23):
The team's red zone efficiency, more importantly, it's goal to
goal efficiency was awful, in the bottom four or five
in that regard, bottom third in terms of red zone,
all those things. So I think it's going to be
improved offense, but they do have some question marks to answer.
They have a quarterback though, in Sam Darnold, and you
mentioned the leadership and what he's gonna do and how
he's gonna take over some of those intangibles. You know,
(47:45):
when we talked to Luke fall who played with him
in New York a couple months ago when he first signed,
you know, Luke was kind of a few and we'll
get Luke on again, a fusive in his praise for
who Sam is and what he's all about. And I
think that there's a pattern here. Get out of the
Jets organization, get out of New York, and sometimes people flourish,
sometimes they do better, Sometimes sometimes they're able to find themselves,
(48:06):
and there's probably no worse place in the world for
a young quarterback than with those two dysfunctional organizations, right,
I mean, it just it just the pressure cooker, the negativity,
and just organizations that frankly aren't very good. Yeah, they're broke.
This that's not the case out here with John Schneider's
leaderships in twenty ten, they're far from that. And the
(48:27):
way McDonald handles himself and the presidency that he has,
I think Donald is gonna take that. I would be surprised. Now.
Obviously he had a couple weapons in Jefferson and Addison,
but Jordan Addison has hurt a bunch of last season,
and I think Jefferson didn't miss a game or two
as well. So like I'm okay, I think he's gonna
be just fine with the with the the guys he has.
(48:50):
I mean, the running back situation, if healthy, Ken Walker,
charbon A, Damian Martinez, McIntosh deep deep deep there as well.
I think they're fine as well as the offenses or
the offensive line is okay, But I think those are
the ones we're looking at. We'll be out there next week.
I know what they're not gonna do They're not still
sitting here on what is today.
Speaker 2 (49:11):
Was twenty twenty eighth.
Speaker 1 (49:14):
They're not sitting here on May twenty eighth, not sitting
here on May twenty eighth, and saying, who's our quarterback?
Speaker 2 (49:22):
Right?
Speaker 1 (49:24):
You know who is who?
Speaker 3 (49:25):
Ian?
Speaker 1 (49:26):
Our favorite team, the Pittsburgh.
Speaker 2 (49:29):
Steelers, not my favorite team.
Speaker 1 (49:30):
It is nobody's favorite team in this town somewhere Mike
ho Lombrian shaking his head, going, did you guys know
did you know that Jerome Bettison was from Detroit? That's right?
They are not our favorite team, but when things go south,
they are. Last year they decided it would be a
good idea to go get Russ. Okay, I'm there. I'll
(49:51):
never forget my guy, Tim Benz texting me and it
was I don't think it was training camp, might have
been like mini camp. But he sends me this picture
and it was of the Klan, the group, the whole,
the whole entourage. Yeah, Sierra kids, nanny's the whole nine
yards sitting picnic style on the practice field, watching practice.
(50:14):
He's going, what is? He goes, you were right, what
is going on here?
Speaker 2 (50:18):
Before the season even started?
Speaker 1 (50:20):
Before it started? Because I told him I said, you wait,
the entourage will make make its presence felt. Now. I
think at some point they kind of squelched out a
little bit. Yeah, but it was going on, well, listen,
Russ is Russ, and you know he's not the same
Russ that we had here in Seattle for the first
few years. But he ain't nothing compared to the guy
they may sign Aaron Rodgers. I know he's probably some
(50:42):
of you guys may have heard this sound already, but
Terry Bradshaw, Hall of Fame, Super Bowl winning quarterback for
the Pittsburgh Steelers, legend in Pittsburgh, had some thoughts about
the possibility of the Steelers signing Aaron Rodgers. That to
me is a joke. What are you going to bring
him in for one year?
Speaker 7 (51:02):
Are you kidding?
Speaker 8 (51:03):
They?
Speaker 1 (51:03):
I mean, that's not right. No, man, that guy needs
to stay in California and go. Thank you Jew and
Bark and the gods out there.
Speaker 2 (51:15):
Shoe on bark.
Speaker 1 (51:16):
That is the greatest line ever chew bark loser.
Speaker 2 (51:21):
Oh, it's like your version of pound sand is I.
Speaker 1 (51:24):
Might use that. Why am I steal that one from
Terry Bridshaw? Shoe Bark go sit in the woods in
California and chew bark. Oh my god, I'm trying to
decide if I want it to happen or not. That's
that's one's fun so kind of I kind of do
as well. Yeah, because he's I mean, it's just no, like,
(51:45):
first of all, was he forty two?
Speaker 2 (51:47):
Now forty one? Let me look? Oh, where's the drop?
I need it?
Speaker 1 (51:54):
Stealing softies drop oways in grease?
Speaker 2 (51:55):
Yeah, exactly, he is? How old is he? He is
a certain drop number of the years old, forty.
Speaker 1 (52:03):
One, he's forty.
Speaker 2 (52:04):
I can't find it.
Speaker 1 (52:05):
That's fine, don't worry. Don't worry, like like you know,
like can you imagine being at this point and not
have it? Like, listen, there's teams that maybe don't feel
good about their quarterback. No one will ever say that,
right like, no one will ever say I don't feel
great about our quarterback situation. No one will say that.
But everyone by it right now has a play except
for those guys. They're the ones that don't. They're the
(52:27):
only ones that don't. Although I might say this, the
Cleveland Browns may be close, and I know they drafted
two guys and Dylan Gabriel and Shoodo or Sanders, I
understand that. I don't know if you saw this today.
It was one of the most glorious things I've seen
in a long time. This is where you know the
old Lavelle Edwards of OLDBYU coach. He was the first
one that ever came up with the line, and it
(52:49):
was a It was a classic one. And it's like
if you don't if you have two quarterbacks, you have none.
You have none? Yeah, right, like you have none. So
the Cleveland Browns who just don't seem to know what
they're doing sometimes ever ever, don't even know where they're
going to play in a couple of years or in
a big fight about that. They can't figure any of
that stuff out. So the Cleveland Browns did this, and
(53:14):
it was courtesy of ESPN Cleveland. So I don't know
if it's the Browns, but it sure looks official. I mean,
they got it from somewhere, and if you're tracking it,
then someone's tracking it. They did a quarterback tracker for
an OTA practice with Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Shaduur, Sanders,
and Dylan Gabriel. And the only reason I think that
they made that this thing came out and was making
(53:36):
the rounds now is because Shaduur was seven of nine
with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Dylan Gabriel eleven to sixteen,
two touchdowns and one interception, Joe Flacco nine to fourteen,
one touchdown, Picket nine to sixteen, nothing, nothing, And I
looked at that today. Now listen, we're all little gog
Off for the NFL. Yeah. I like to joke about
the guy that sits there, and they will sit and
(53:58):
they'll do her thing like hey man, you know, like
going through the roster, who's here, who's not here, and
then everyone's trusted out because some guy's not there at
OTA or whatever, and it's like, yeah, well, actually he's
at a wedding or god forbid, at a funeral like something. Right,
But to track quarterback stats in team drills at an
OTA where the defense cannot defend, Okay, you don't feel
(54:24):
good about your quarterback or so, but they're better off
than Pittsburgh is right now. Their neighbors in in the AFC.
Speaker 3 (54:30):
Well, the biggest thing about sam Donold for me, as
we wrap it around back to the Seahawks here, is
like that's the main difference of this team from last year,
and the Seahawks won ten games. You know, granted the
final game was not against starters. So I say they're
nine and seven. They were nine and seven last year,
and they basically I think most people thought they had
(54:50):
a pretty good draft. I think, you know, yeah, you
lost DK, but you kind of in some ways replaced
that with Cooper Cup, you know, depending on different types
of receivers, dient player. Yeah, same similar production, we'll say.
And then the main difference is Gino to Sam Donald, Right,
So that's where I think a lot of the national
narrative around the Seahawks and why they're over under win
(55:13):
totals are so low on what we thought they would be,
uh and like, So that's the main difference for me,
and I think that's gonna be the biggest question for
the Seahawks obviously going into the season.
Speaker 1 (55:22):
So I'd feel so much I feel so much better
about their situation at quarterback than I would if I
just taught we're talking about the two teams from the
ANFC North, like Night and Day. Oh yeah, Night and
Day along those lives. And this isn't just me saying
it here on May twenty eighth. I said it last
fall you you were doing the shows with me. And
I didn't love Gino last year either. I didn't love
(55:43):
the body language. I didn't love I thought he was
he was somewhat of a different quarterback. He was never comfortable,
and maybe it was Ryan Grubb and the offense. Sure,
I think it goes all the way to the top.
With Mike McDonald, he wasn't McDonald's guy. He was Pete's guy.
That's why he's where he is right now. I just
didn't love him last year. The fact that they made
the move. I loved it now. I could look we
(56:06):
could all look dumb here in a few months, But
sure I loved at the time. I like it even
more now. And you know what, I probably like it
for Gino and for Pete. Yeah, Like, I think this
is one of those moves that works out for everybody.
You move there, then you go sign Sam Darnold's a
free agent, and it works out pretty good along the way.
So all right, four nine four to five one, tell
them three two one four nine four five one. It
(56:26):
is the undrafted unrestricted right there for you free agent
text line four nine four to five one. We'll check
your text. Also give you quick update on the crack
and coaching search coming up next.
Speaker 8 (56:40):
Podcasting live from the R and R Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio.
Now back to Ian Fornez, fouwered by Seattle's Closest sports book,
Snow call me Casino on Sports Radio ninety three point
three kJ R FM.
Speaker 1 (56:58):
Al Right, we are back, Welcome back in. We'll get
a text here in a couple of seconds. Let me
get to one little quick Uh. We'll call this the
daily power play, but we'll just kind of make sure
we make sure, we meant make sure, we.
Speaker 3 (57:10):
Make sure sure you Nope, Okay, I'm gonna.
Speaker 1 (57:15):
Read the open for you real quick and tell you
or just read our sponsor because we really appreciate them. Uh.
Isa Kuahanda Caboda has the largest inventory of Koboda tractors
and construction equipment in King County, plus with steel and
Honda power tools. Issaquahanda Kmboda is your one stop shop.
Is Ta Kauahanda Cabota right off find on the exit
fifteen the largest inventory of Koboda equipment in King County.
(57:36):
Uh here's our daily power play. We're getting close, We're
getting close, closer to a Kraken head coach announcement. One
of the guys that's being talked about around the hockey
media circles Mitch Love, former average silver tip player, coach,
et cetera. H He's also being mentioned as a potential
head coach in Pittsburgh with the Penguins, who are also
(57:57):
looking for a coach as well. Close Sturm, I believe,
named the coach day for Boston.
Speaker 2 (58:01):
So it's so, is it just of cracking and Penguins
that are left?
Speaker 1 (58:04):
Yeah? Yeah, okay, so they're they're getting close. I saw
that the story of railroad story today in the Times.
You know, a little bit of consternation. You know, where
are they? What's going on? I think having been the
guy that they you know you they linked the YouTube
video with our season ticket holder meeting we had last
week with with Jason Bottrell, I can tell they they
(58:26):
haven't offered the job to anybody. If they want somebody
or who they want, they haven't offered it to him yet.
It's a due diligence thing. I just don't think it's
a massive concern right now. I think they've got their
eye on two or three guys. I think Mitch is
one of them, and they're gonna make the decision soon,
probably really soon. But I wouldn't worry too much about
(58:47):
it at this point in time, so I'll just leave
it at that. But I think we'll have a we'll
have announcement hopefully pretty soon.
Speaker 2 (58:52):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (58:52):
I don't know if you saw this, and I'm sure
you digs you worked with the Kraken, but John Hayden
extension as well. Yeah, there you go, two year, one
way extension.
Speaker 1 (59:01):
He kind of mentioned that in our I think it
was our conversation and not the one on the season
ticket hold. But it was interesting because John Hayden was
the guy that he did talk about, right. He likes John,
He plays a heavy game, gives you a lot. Yeah,
just he's he's I think if you go with a
fourth line that includes him and Mikey Asmont, you're in
(59:22):
pretty good shape. Yes, you know, like and you can
see you watch downic A playoffs. Fourth lines can make
a massive difference, and you want guys that can step
up and play at a higher role. I think Acmont kind
of showed that the World Championships. Like, yeah, even though
he played a fourth line, he played it a very
high level.
Speaker 3 (59:36):
Well, and do you think they lean into more of
a traditional fourth line next year instead of kind of
doing the role four lines of scoring to have the
last couple of years.
Speaker 1 (59:43):
Last year was so weird because they had they had
the injuries, you know, I mean that the everly injury
just crushed them.
Speaker 2 (59:49):
Yeah, and that's the death for sure.
Speaker 1 (59:50):
And they just had some other guys that weren't producing
ninety five that they were just trying to find guy,
you know, find find an answer to. And part of
it was just the structure that you know, Ron Francis
talked about, and that's why they made a decision to
make a chick coaching change, right yep. So all that
all right, Let's get some text four nine four five
one that is still undrafted, unrestricted available for you. Text
(01:00:12):
line four nine.
Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
You're in the transfer portal.
Speaker 1 (01:00:16):
They are waiting to see if they have another year
of ELIGI deal.
Speaker 2 (01:00:20):
Come on, let's go.
Speaker 1 (01:00:21):
You see, Godzag assigned a guy that from Grank Canyon
that will be in his sixth year if he's granted
that six year of eligibility tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:00:30):
It's college athletics as we know it now.
Speaker 1 (01:00:32):
Yes, what do you got?
Speaker 3 (01:00:33):
Lots of stuff on the Seahawks. I hate to oh
actually this is a Mariner's one. Sorry, hate to be proverbial.
Baby Baby Ruth, candy bar, and the Caddyshack swimming pool.
But can the Mitch Carver thing just be over? I
can't watch his designated walker at bats anymore. No more
mitches on the Mariners. Good text, very good text.
Speaker 1 (01:00:54):
First of all, the candy bar in the pool was
one of the great scenes ever. Oh yeah, it's not
fun though if it actually happens. You ever been in
a pool where it happens.
Speaker 3 (01:01:02):
Uh no, I've not, I will thankfully. I'm not a
pool guy. Oh really yeah, I'm like mom, a lake guy.
If I'm gon got someone and I'm going to lake.
Speaker 1 (01:01:09):
We had a pool when we lived in Salt Lake
in Draper, which is south of Salt Lake above the valley.
It's really just kick ass outdoor pool that when my
daughter was really young, she was like, you know, three, four,
five years old, and we would go there on Sundays
because well, Salt Lake it was always empty, like there
was nobody there, and so we go there Sunday afternoons
(01:01:30):
in the summer because it's hot, as you know what
in Salt Lake there. It's a one hundred plus degrees. We
go there, we hang out and there was you know,
it was a huge outdoor pool, really cool, and we
were there one time and all of a sudden, like
this mass panic, whistles blowing, lifeguards, you know, like hey,
get out of the pool. Get out of the pool.
And I'm like, holy cow, somebody dark, like what's going on?
Yeah right, No one's jumping in though, so we you know.
(01:01:52):
I grab my daughter and she started like, well, I
don't get out it all start screaming why am I
getting out? And like, hey, just bree reals free, We'll
get out, like I don't know, And sure enough, ducage
no dusage in the pool. And I'll tell you right
now was not a baby roof.
Speaker 3 (01:02:06):
Okay, I did see a cool like, uh a kind
of take on. When cal Rawley the big Dumper hits
two home runs in a game like he did last night,
should we call it dropping a deuce?
Speaker 1 (01:02:20):
Big dumper with two with two bombs? Big dumper with
two bombs? Should be a deuce? Should be you know
what you can use that's free for you to use
on the post.
Speaker 2 (01:02:31):
Okay, thank you, thank you.
Speaker 3 (01:02:33):
Check make sure my Guinea Pig is the infant show
to make sure that I can use it.
Speaker 2 (01:02:37):
On the Mariner's postcast.
Speaker 1 (01:02:40):
Marcus says, I think the offensive offense has gotten worse.
Three of the five offensive line positions or question marks
me because Lucas hasn't shown me he can play. Huh
what we didn't get triple Crown Cup. So our wide
receiver is awful in my opinion, aside from JSN and Sharps,
is just a guy almost likely have to start a
few games. Marcus is going down the glass half empty road.
(01:03:04):
First of all, Lucas not that he hasn't shown you
he can play when healthy. He rated out and graded
out higher than Cross. Yes, when healthy his first couple
of years.
Speaker 3 (01:03:15):
I have more confidence in him again if he's healthy
than I do with Charles Cross.
Speaker 1 (01:03:19):
He's healthy, I mean that's the thing. Like, now does
he stay healthy? Yes, I don't know, but he is
healthy and he's talked about that first time a long time.
Just talks to him a lot anyway off for the
off the air, and he's healthy, like and you watch
him working out and stuff. Now a year ago he
couldn't do squats. His knees were like mine. And like
it was not pretty, but he's healthy. And you know, Cross,
(01:03:39):
I'm never as high on Cross as some guys are.
I think he sometimes gets bullied and bul rushed a
little bit, but he's still probably a top sixteen left
tackle in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:03:49):
Yeah, that's fair.
Speaker 1 (01:03:50):
And so you know, and Cross is Abe Lucas is
not Penny Sewle at right tackle, but he's he's pretty
good if healthy. He's healthy right now now, sharbon a. Okay,
you want to go down that road, I might dance
with you there, but I think they've got better alternatives
if Walker gets hurt. I love Damian Martinez.
Speaker 2 (01:04:07):
I do too. I still love Kenny McIntosh too.
Speaker 1 (01:04:10):
I like Kenny mcinto. I think Damian Martinez was steal
the draft, like in the seventh favor of Seattle's draft pick.
I think he was a steal.
Speaker 2 (01:04:17):
Two O six.
Speaker 3 (01:04:17):
Iahuasca is a bark slash tree. That's why Terry said
that regarding Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 1 (01:04:22):
So because he doesn't want him there.
Speaker 2 (01:04:24):
Yeah, like I don't.
Speaker 1 (01:04:25):
You don't look too deep into this.
Speaker 2 (01:04:27):
I think it was just the context of the joke.
Speaker 1 (01:04:29):
Context, Okay, I got it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he just
doesn't want him any part of his beloved Steelers organization.
Speaker 3 (01:04:35):
Yeah, four two five in a thought theory for you
and the Mollywop boys, sucks. We couldn't get to this.
But with the ascension of cal is the unquestioned team
leader with his contract and being vocal about the team,
do you think that frees up Julio to just play
free and let it rip moving forward?
Speaker 1 (01:04:50):
Well, the season he's having is probably not a coincidence
that Julio has been getting better and.
Speaker 3 (01:04:54):
Better in this game, right, I completely agree, and I like,
I actually really think the Marriors are in a good
spot with their position players. Having two guys with completely
polar opposite personalities. You got the Cow, It's like the
kind of do the dirty work, grind, kind of talk
to everyone, kind of be the team leader in that way.
Julio's just the guy that's going out to have fun
(01:05:15):
and being kind of the face of you know, doing
all these like no fly zone. And it's two totally
different ways to go about it. But it's I'm not
saying either one's correct, but having guys that do both
of those things make it so that you can kind
of marry the two mentalities moving forward.
Speaker 1 (01:05:30):
So Julio plays with such a great joy. Yes, you know,
like he plays with such a great joy in the game.
Speaker 2 (01:05:36):
And it makes me happy, like we're just watching him play,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (01:05:39):
I mean, I don't think I've ever been less happy
watching the Mariners the last couple of years. And when
I was at I was at the game last year
when heard his.
Speaker 2 (01:05:44):
Ankle, yeah, and I was like, god, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:05:47):
Like I just remember sitting there as I think that
was my son, where he's like no, yeah, he's God, no,
he's such a dynamic. I mean, I had just visions
of Griffy. I mean, it was his ankle, but I
had visions of when Griffy broke his wrist in the
Kingdom against them, you know, I have those visions and
it's just like no, no, no. But now he plays
with a great joy, and you know, Randy does the
same thing. You know, like those guys have have a
(01:06:09):
level of energy and joy that they play with. And
I think it's you know, it's fun. Baseball's long, it's boring.
Those those guys are fun. They make baseball, you know,
and and and you know winning also helps. They should
they should sweep this series and then the key this week.
Like the guy said from MOI walk, what do they
do against the Twins who are roughly the same records?
Speaker 3 (01:06:28):
They just win both of these series. You're in great shape,
great shape, great.
Speaker 1 (01:06:32):
Fame with us today. He'll join us coming up next,
just real quick. As Andrews mentioned, crack and signing one
of their own UFA and restricted free agent, John Hayden,
signed a contract two year contract extension. That's a one
(01:06:52):
way deal, a good deal for him. Makes the same
money here or in the minors. So good for John Hayden.
And they keep a guy that's a good depth Piecebviously
he's not a big impact guy, but he's good death piece,
could play a lot of positions, understands his role as well.
Dick Fane is that Jimmy's on first down the street
getting ready for the Mariners and Nationals Game two of
(01:07:12):
that series, which should be a Mariner win. Then they
win tomorrow, get the sweep, and then a fun weekend
with the Twins. You like my optimism? Wow about that?
Speaker 9 (01:07:21):
What about the what about the old adage you never
assume a sweep in Major League Baseball? Didn't we learned
that in Chicago last week?
Speaker 1 (01:07:28):
Yeah? But they got it, didn't they They didn't, that's right. Yeah,
and they actually probably should have lost all three. Now, yeah,
I'm trying. I watched that national team last night. Who's
the shortstop that went out and made just one of
the most boneheaded plays ever? God almighty man, there's some
bad baseball teams. There are some really bad baseball.
Speaker 9 (01:07:51):
Team and they don't even have close to the worst
record in baseball either. No, there's there's Rockies and White
Sox out there lurking that are that have way worse records.
I don't know how much worse actually a baseball team
they are than the Nationals. You have to ask our
our baseball Savanna Andrews hurst that question.
Speaker 3 (01:08:05):
Oh, I know about that Rockies and White Sox at
bottom of the barrel, Like, well.
Speaker 1 (01:08:11):
Rockies, haven't they set a record or the verge of
a record of most consecutive lost series dating back to
last year? Like they haven't won a series since last season.
Speaker 9 (01:08:22):
That's like that's hard to do, yes, like they said, yeah,
you can stumble into a series win once a month.
Speaker 1 (01:08:28):
I mean, this is just even if you're horrible. Andrews
isn't old enough. But Dick, you're old enough to remember
that Bill Plumber led Mariners in nineteen ninety two, right.
Speaker 9 (01:08:36):
Because the Fever Believer wasn't good enough. We had to
get rid of the Fever.
Speaker 1 (01:08:40):
First first manager in the franchise's short history at that
point to have a winning record. And what are we
gonna do. We're gonna turf them, bring in Bill a Plumber.
Speaker 2 (01:08:49):
And we go so easy?
Speaker 1 (01:08:50):
Were we? Sixty two and one hundred? It was It
might have been worse than that. It felt worse than that.
It was just awful, and he was a miserable human being,
and it was just, oh my god, this just because
your Johnny Bench's backup does not mean you're smart. That was.
But but I'm sure that team stumbled through a few
series wins along the way, right, Like that's how bad
(01:09:11):
the Coloradore?
Speaker 9 (01:09:12):
Oh yeah, I watched way too many of those games,
listened to way too many of those games. Was that
was my die hard, die hard Mariner phase, whether they
were good, bad, or indifferent?
Speaker 3 (01:09:21):
Yes, yeah, you know.
Speaker 9 (01:09:24):
I remember life guarding at Olympic View Swim Club in
the in the early nineties, and they were the only
this was pre ninety five run and the only reason
to listen was to hear every hour when Edgar Martinez
would come up to the plate because he was hit
like three point thirty. We were maybe gonna get the
Batting Crown for it. And it was literally the only
reason to listen to the game to see if Edgar
(01:09:46):
would get a hit to help his cause for the
American League batting.
Speaker 1 (01:09:50):
Ground, wasn't it. Another reason I liked listening is because
Niehouse had no problem just going off on people and
the team, criticizing, and just the two. I always say this,
you could Bob Rondo and Dave knee House. If you
listen to ten seconds, maybe even five seconds of any
broadcast that they did, you would know immediately what was
(01:10:12):
going on in the games in terms of how the
team that they worked for was doing. Like Rondo had
that sarcastic, condescending tone if things weren't going well for Washington,
and knee House had this just just right at your
venomous like, just I can't believe what I just saw.
That's just the worst play ever. I mean, just kill guys.
And they both had the juice to get by with him. Yes, right,
(01:10:34):
you know it's beautiful.
Speaker 9 (01:10:34):
I think that honestly, I have always thought that's the
way you should call call games.
Speaker 1 (01:10:39):
I have always.
Speaker 9 (01:10:40):
You you have to be passionate when things are going well,
and you have to be passionate when things are going poorly.
And God bless the storm, they have never told me
not to be passionate when things aren't going with good. Now,
fortunately with the storm, things don't go well only like once.
Speaker 1 (01:10:54):
Out of every five or six years.
Speaker 7 (01:10:56):
So like it.
Speaker 1 (01:10:57):
It makes it. You're a little I don't have to
deal with what.
Speaker 9 (01:11:00):
Dave had to deal with, nineteen long years of frustration.
Speaker 1 (01:11:03):
It's over, and then let's just double that.
Speaker 9 (01:11:06):
After two thousand and two, we'll just double it and
make it nineteen more long years of Oh good lord,
do I sound like a salty Mariner fan.
Speaker 1 (01:11:16):
Yeah, it's eighty plus degrees. I'm happy.
Speaker 9 (01:11:19):
I'm taking my lovely bride tonight to our my first
game because I told Andrews off the air, I don't
go to baseball.
Speaker 7 (01:11:25):
Games unless it's seventy degrees.
Speaker 1 (01:11:27):
That's just a that is just a personal rule. I
will your anti marine layers, oh god, your anti layer.
Speaker 9 (01:11:36):
Hey, I'll bundle up. I don't care what the temperature is.
I'll go to a football game. I've been to many,
many football games in the snow. Baseball, no, that is
a summertime sport. If I can't wear shorts to the
baseball game, I ain't gonna.
Speaker 1 (01:11:50):
I love it. Well, no marine Layer, just a game tonight,
Befe the second start with the show.
Speaker 9 (01:11:56):
Yeah, oh yeah, it's gonna beautiful. We got a lot
going on the show today. We're obviously we're gonna talk
to cal Raley and kind of where he ranks in
the whole pantheon of Mariner hitters of all time.
Speaker 1 (01:12:08):
We're gonna have Mike Florio on at three.
Speaker 9 (01:12:09):
Ten, We've got Petros for his weekly conversation at four,
we got Larry Stone at five talking about this first
place baseball team, and a whole lot of Hugh Breed
love Millon.
Speaker 1 (01:12:19):
Is that enough for show? You like that? I love it.
Have a great show. Say hot to Hugh. We'll talk
to you sooner. Take care of that stick fame coming
up next to you tomorrow. For the mild mannered and
marginally objectionable Inverness, this is paddle day saying so long everyone,
