Horse Racing Northwest Emerald Downs Edition. Well, yeah, we generally
focus on Emerald Downs because it's horse racing Northwest and
we're looking at two weekends to go in the twenty
twenty four Emerald Down season. Go with you along with
Vince Brune, Petra Lewin's going to be our guest on

(01:11):
this week's edition. She is the co owner and breeder
of Blazing Bella Blue, along with trainer Charles Essex. It's
Lewin and Essex, and I think any of you who
followed Northwest Racing Emerald Downs, Blazing Bella Blue is one
great mayor and she has been retired. She won't be

(01:33):
in the Washington Cup, Philly or Mayor on closing weekend,
But what a career, and we'll recap that on today's show.
All right, Well, Vince got some good weather for this
weekend and looking forward to it. Stake's triple header of
course on closing day, September fifteenth.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
Yeah, it's supposed to be pretty warm this weekend as
we wind it down with days fifty to fifty one
and fifty two and yet and then we head into
closing weekend with Fan Appreciation Day on the fourteenth, and
then we got the gott Steen, the Mucleshoot Tribal Classic,
and the Walk up Phillian Mayor to round it out

(02:12):
on Sunday, September fifteenth.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Indeed, okay, well, news and notes are updated at emeraldowns
dot com.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Correct, there are up.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
I just used that for a little bit of information
to count up the number of three time winners, which
I came up with twenty one three time winners and
of course right, yep, yeah, four time winners are surprisingly perfect.
And Mary Walker, who's in this weekend, correct, so the
claimer of the meat as well. I'm getting ahead of

(02:42):
myself here, but yeah, I am. It's Octoberfest weekend at
Emerald Downs. Yeah, we're doing Octoberfest this Friday night, Saturday
and Sunday. If you wear any Octoberfest related gear, you
do get in for free. And you also when you
go to those German beer stands, I say German because

(03:07):
it's Octoberfest, you get a five dollars beer if you
have your gear on, and that is a premium German beer.
There are twenty dollars steins available to purchase with beer
in them and a ten dollar refill. And we've got
live music Bavarian theme music Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And

(03:32):
there's a little talk going.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
On that.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
Sausage Toss might replace the horseshoe Toss on Friday night.
That'll be interesting, but you know, we'll still have prizes
and things like that.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Octoberfest october Fest, Yes, we can't do Octoberfest in October
now as we finished in September, but yeah, a lot
of specials as you mentioned, and that'll be interesting tomorrow night.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Yeah, we've got seven races Friday night starting at seven pm,
eight races Saturday, eight races Sunday here at Emerald Downs.
The Emerald Downs Golf Tournament this year is Tuesday, September seventeenth,
and I'm opening this up to the public because it's
a fundraiser this year for the Backstretch Chapel organization. And

(04:21):
they do a lot. They can use funds because they
put on events for the backstretch workers and of course
we have dorm rooms for the grooms back there. A
lot of rooms live full time at Emerald Downs during
the season and you know, functions for them and different
events cost money and actually food and clothing as well

(04:43):
as sometimes included. So we're going to fundraise for the
Backstretch Chapel and so it's one hundred dollars per person.
This year it's Auburn Golf Course Monday. Monday, Auburn Golf Course, Tuesday,
September seventeenth, eight am. Shotguns Scramble, Get your foursome in.
Get a hold of me Joe Whitey at Emerald Downs

(05:06):
two five three two eight eight seven seven two one.
That's two eight eight seven seven to two to one.
Call me if you want me to email you a
form when you can put your foursome on there. It's
one hundred dollars per person. All net proceeds go to
the Backstretch Chapel service and there's the mulligans involved to purchase. Also,

(05:27):
string can be purchased on the day of the event.
And if you don't have four people, you can still play.
We can hook you up with another team. So Emerald
Downs Golf Tuesday, September seventeenth, eight am, shotgun start Auburn
golf course and a good cause to benefit here at
Emerald Downs. So keep that in mind, and Vince, let's

(05:50):
talk a little bit about last week and some of
the milestones and things that are coming up here at
the track.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Okay, yeah, are This is for August thirte through September one.
Valpak jockey Alex Cruz doubled all three days and has
pretty much, let's say it, clinched his fifth straight writing
title here. I had a nice chat with Alex for
a story I'm working on, and he even admits it
would take something unforeseen to beat him. And really, you know,

(06:20):
he's an outwardly quiet guy. We all know, but if
you get him talk and he is really an interesting,
introspective person. He talks about the route he took from
Puerto Rico, the youngest of five kids, and kind of
the strange route that finds him all the way at
Emerald Downs. And it's really been a whirldwind. And boy,

(06:41):
five straight wins titles is really is really incredible.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
I'm just going to interject there that you know, he
started our first year twenty twenty, the COVID year first
year up here wins the title. But you know, the
last two seasons especially, we've had a lot of new
jockeys that are good jockeys, and he's still one.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
For sure, and it's just he has an inner drive
to win. He's very lucky, you know, he is five
nine that you know, he's pretty pretty much able to
eat what he wants still at this point in his
life and keeps his strength up and you know, just
that drive to win and ride every day to be
a leading rider. You really it takes riding a lot

(07:23):
of horses and maybe not when you're feeling one hundred percent.
It's hard to be in a zone every day. But
he's pretty close to doing that, and it just he
deserves a lot of credit. As you say, that was
a pretty tough colony he's beaten this year with guys
like Ryas and Krieger and Lopez at all guitaras in Montalvo, Montalvo,
you name it. Yeah, so quite a feather in his cap.

(07:43):
Our trainer, Candy Kreiderman. She swept the late double gird
Road red has been a really nice horse here the
last couple of years. He got his third of the
meat eighth in the last two years, and then knew
every morning taking the night cap, well those were both
on by John Parker. He's what went away from two
hundred wins. That be only the second owner to accomplish

(08:03):
that feat.

Speaker 3 (08:04):
So he's been a great supporter of Emerald Downs. And
you know a lot of people you know give a
little smile when John Parker wins because he does participate.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
You bet, and yeah, he's in fact he's I think
he's got the favorite in the first race tomorrow night,
so he could hit two hundred real early tomorrow. Owner
of the Week. This is a hearse you picked last week.
Joe Rocket a Day is owned by Club Lucky Racing.
That's Sean Silas. They race for Bonnie Jenny and this

(08:33):
has turned out to be a nice claim. They claimed
it out of a maiden ten and gotten a couple
of really nice wins even ran into stakes. So Club
Lucky Racing our owner of the week. The wah Bread
could have gone a lot out different ways here, Young
Life Laura, you know she's been another one. I think
six wins now the last two years for her. Yes,
she won a nice race last week. Bred by Keith

(08:55):
and Jan Swaggerty. You know they've bred three winners last week,
The Swaggertys So Young Life, Laura Wabread of the Week,
and our groom of the week native of Jamaica, Trevor Anthony.
He rooms for trainer Bob Bean Square Fun got the
win and the opener on Sunday. I don't know if
you've seen it, Joe, but when Bob Bean wins a race,
Trevor puts on a little bit of a show down there.

(09:16):
He whoops it pretty good.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
So he's our groom of the week, Trevor Anthony, excellent. Yeah,
Bob has made a lot of friends around here. We
were trying to get Bob on our podcast today, but
his wife's in town. He had some duties to do there,
had taken her to the Puyallte Fair. He promised her that.
So and speaking of Alex Cruz, we're going to try
and get him as a guest next week on north

(09:39):
Sports Racing Northwest Here you bet, yeah, yeah, he is
all but mathematics. I looked at some of the standings
in baseball and some of these teams are ninety nine
point nine percent to make the playoffs, meaning they'd have
to lose every game and other things that have to
fall wrong against him. And that's about what Alex is
right now to win the writing tie let Emerald Downs.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
Right, and he just you know, he devoids slumps, which
it would take for someone to beat him. So he's
in a pretty good spot going into closing week and
as you mentioned, beating a pretty tough colony this year.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
Yeah, so there are last week's honors at Emerald Downs,
and you mentioned John Parker and Blaine Wright got his
five hundredth Emerald Downs victory last week.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
Did it with the flourished to a two year old
race with checkered flag, holding off a stable mate to
were joke and he almost got five hundred and five
hundred and one going south, Yeah, and one so fell
swoop well, then he did get five oh one the
very next race. That Ross's girl, she's one of those
blue hens, was it? My little lady? The name of
the horse. How impressive was that? You know? Ed Cornair

(10:50):
pointed out how good the horse looked on the track
warming up and coming debuting late in a three year
old season. But boy was it ready to run, and.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
She was five and a half to one. First time
starter Dans and Candy out of Ross's girls, loosed his
whiz his little sister.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
Yes, and see that tigers older sister and got a
sixty nine buyer, which is pretty lofty for a debut runner.
So that one looks like it has a pretty bright
future too. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
Yeah, Blaine just about won two races. And that brings
me back a story I've told many times on here
when Tim mccanna tied the state record here at Emerald Downs.
It was about two thousand and seven or so. He
won five races now two thousand and nine, including a
dead heat for win. Five wins in an hour and

(11:38):
a half. Mccanna had, Yeah, he won like at seven
point thirty. Then at eight the next race he had
a dead heat. He had both of them, so he's
got three wins. Then at eight thirty he wins again,
and at nine he wins again.

Speaker 1 (11:54):
So now all at one track. Sometimes you hear these
trainers with these incredible exploits, but it's their they're running
a two different tracks simultaneously. But not that night. That
was I think Kevin Krieger was involved in.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
He won five races at yeah in the evening, and
I think four of them were from mccanna. Yeah, that
was quite a feat. It was actually less than an
hour and a half because there wasn't thirty minutes between
races on a Thursday night. So good stuff for Blaine Wright.
He is what number six all time at Emerald Downs.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
Yeah, and Tom Wenzel is about to yeah get his
he'll probably get his five hundred and twin here next year.
And both Tom and Blaine are chasing Doris Harwood for
all time stakes wins. Tom six back and Blaine eight back,
so I think that's an inevitability too, And I think.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
One Guterras is just four stakes wins behind Gayleen Mitchell.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
For the tracks eighty to seventy six.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
Right, So numbers for US media guys to keep track
of and give give credit where credit is due, all right,
simul this weekend. Of course, seven days a week at
Emerald Downs, we're open for full card simul casting from
around the country. That includes of course Mondays and Tuesdays.
But this Saturday there's a lot of great action going on.

(13:12):
Kentucky Downs has a bunch of steaks, so does Colonial
The del Mar Debutante at Old del Mar Hastings has
a couple of stakes on Saturday Gulfstream as they have
a great two year old series. They got a couple
of juvenile steaks. Sunday, there's the del Mar Futurity and
more big money races from Kentucky Downs. So you can

(13:36):
complement your Emerald Downs attention with full card simulcasting from
around the country. Okay, let's see. Well, we had a
training day today that'll be up on YouTube. We're working
on our where are They Now story, which involves a

(13:56):
lot of Emerald Downs horse people from uh, you know,
the past and the future, the future. That doesn't really
make sense, but I said it, so I'm not going
to take it back at this point in the season.
All right, Well, we're going to take a short time out.
We're going to come back with the Petre Luin the
breeder co owner co breeder of Blazing Bella Blue Mucos.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
It doesn't matter if you love craps, blackjack machines, or
dining on the finest Asian, American and Salish cuisines. It
doesn't matter what you do or where you're coming from. Mucos,
what you do is all at Muckleshoe, an easy drive
from wherever you are. All roads lead to Muckleshoe.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
Mucosuit here pub Blaze at Bella Blue on the outside,
on the inside of Loo hotpreys, but.

Speaker 5 (14:59):
It is Place Fella Blue when ahead and pride fighting
back Young life Laura. But it's gonna be all Blazon
Fella Blue by Ahead.

Speaker 3 (15:10):
And exciting hasting steaks at Emerald Downs in June, won
by Blazing Bella Blue. The fourth consecutive season she has
won a stakes race at Emerald Downs. And it's been
quite a career. I say quite a career, and said,
looks like the racing days are over, but a long,

(15:31):
glorious life ahead. And her co owner and breeder, Petra Lewin,
joins us here on horse Racing Northwest. Petra, great to.

Speaker 6 (15:40):
Have you along, great to be here. Thank you.

Speaker 3 (15:44):
Yeah, you know, just so many fantastic moments. She provided
you your co breeder, along with Charles Essex, your trainer.
And let's go back. You had to mayor and you
decide to breed her. Tell us about that whole history.
We've got time.

Speaker 6 (16:06):
Okay, Well, the Mayor ended up kind of in my
hands via a property that I sold, and she needed
to have a home, and Charlie and I conferred, and
the conversation kind of went like this. She was by

(16:27):
sky Masa and I said this mayor should be going
to Grays and she was open. I said are you
in and he said yes, So off she goes to
at that time Tommy Town and gets Bret to Grayson,
comes back up here in full, and she had a

(16:48):
couple of problems with a discharge from one nostril, so
it ended up, long story short, that she ended up
in full at Oregon State for a week to have
surgery on a cyst in our sinuses. And we got
through that whole episode having her stay in full. And

(17:10):
the following year she had a lovely Philly and that
would be Blazing Bella Blue.

Speaker 3 (17:15):
That yeah, And you know you were just pretty definitive
on breeding to Grays and tell us how yes I was,
tell us about that decision you were following that I.

Speaker 6 (17:25):
Knew that there were two horses that Nick Alexander raced
that were Steaks winners out of sky Mason There's and
that was how I based my selection. And second damn
of uh Bella Mesa was by Conquiso and actually had

(17:48):
one of steaks at I believe it was a I
know it was the stakes. I don't know if it
was a graded steaks at Hollywood Park years before, although
she did not. But Bella Masa had not really produced
too much to that point. But my thinking was the
Grays and sky Mesa cross had already produced steaks forces

(18:12):
and why not.

Speaker 3 (18:14):
Well good for you. Yeah, your research certainly paid off.

Speaker 1 (18:18):
Yeah. Bello Cielo you mentioned, was the damn of Bella Mesa,
and that was bred by finally farm Dave Mowott, and
she ran third in the Hollywood Oaks you mentioned was
a stake swinner with Neil Drysdale. Bella Mesa, on the
other hand, only raised three times and not much of
a career on the racetrack. But how did you say

(18:39):
you ended up with Bella Mesa owning her and.

Speaker 6 (18:43):
Fellow by the name of Larry Real. I think it's
I think that's what correct pronunciation had a farm in
on Alaska. I am a realtor and I ended up
lifting his farm and he had purchased new was Mayors.
This was one of the mares and he needed to

(19:04):
disperse these mares. I actually had bought a yearling Philly
from him to go with another Philly previous to the
Bella Mesa incident actually, and then he ended up having
to sell his farm. And that's when I said, look,
this is a sky Masa mare. She's open, Let's send

(19:26):
her down there. Let's give it a shot. Partly because
Charlie had said to me, you know, you are not
going to probably buy a horse at a sale for
you know that it's going to be a really great horse.
I mean, it can happen, but he said, you're more
likely to breed one. So I held him to that.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
Well, yeah, you know, you take the price of a
yearling and you know Gray's and studfee what what was
it five to seventy five hundred or so?

Speaker 6 (19:57):
It was actually at that time thirty five hundred a board.

Speaker 3 (20:01):
Yeah, so a little cost on getting your your mare
down there and back. But you know, let's face it,
this story really worked out well because the foal was
a Philly and you guys named her Blazing Bell of Blue,
and so Charlie had some input on this as well,
of course as co breeder and owner. But I think

(20:23):
he deferred to you when you were pretty definitive on
going to Gray's and it sounds like Petra.

Speaker 6 (20:27):
Yes, okay, and you know he is. His father had
a breeding farm Granite Falls.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
Sure, I think it was.

Speaker 6 (20:35):
Called I don't know farm. So he comes from you
know that background, knowing that you know, you have to
put quite a bit of energy into breeding horses and
it's a very slow process, but your chances of getting
a very nice horse improved, he thinks, And I do too.

Speaker 3 (20:54):
Yeah, and then this one certainly was born out. So
great call by you on picking a sire and tell
us about Blazing Bella Blues early racing career.

Speaker 6 (21:07):
Well, okay, so I raised her and then Charlie I
had put tack on her and you know, bridle and
that type of thing, and drove her here and then
he came in. He got on her a few times,
and I can't quite remember. He took her to Arizona,
I believe, to train, and her first start was at

(21:30):
sant Anita and I think she ran second that day
on the turf.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
That is correct. Yeah, March twenty seven around quite a bit. Yeah.
Twenty twenty one, she ran second in a maiden special
weight for Cal Bred's or Cal Sired Phillies and Mayors
and really tipped her hand as a runner that was
on turf, and I remember watching that and pointing it
out jee Leudas Washington Bread running pretty good down there,
and then lo and behold she comes up here.

Speaker 6 (21:58):
Yes, yes, at that time she had not run in blinkers,
and she had been kind of swerving around on the
track and still ended up second. We did get a
phone call asking if we would like to sell her,
and I think both of us shook our head and
said no, I don't think so.

Speaker 3 (22:18):
Nice move, nice move, excellent move. And so you didn't sell.
And she came up to Emerald Downs that year and Vince,
she had a great season. She won a steak, she
was a factor in all of her races, and of
course later that year down in Phoenix, I mean she
just proved her versatility in her quality even further.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
Yeah. In fact, what three stake four stakes wins?

Speaker 6 (22:44):
Was it?

Speaker 1 (22:45):
The first year she ended up with her final seven
wins in her career were all stakes, which is an
amazing accomplishment. But yeah, she won sprint Steaks and her
route Steaks at Turr Paradise that year after winning the
Kent Steaks up here, and then as you mentioned four
straight years.

Speaker 3 (23:02):
Now one of them was on the grass down in
Arizona too, wasn't it?

Speaker 1 (23:06):
Yes, that came in the to do was it the
Glendale I think in twenty twenty two?

Speaker 3 (23:12):
And Washington Horse of the year, not just champion three
year old Philly she got that, but she also got
Washington Horse of the Year. She was the leading money
earner for all Washington breads in twenty twenty one. So
you know, things are working out well. Just a really
fine race horse. And boy, you guys had you know,

(23:32):
you always have decisions to make on when to give
time off and when to where to run her, and
you know, but you and Charlie get along pretty good
on the decision making process.

Speaker 6 (23:44):
I would say great. I would say great. Yes, we
certainly have no conflicts of interest as far as what
we think the best the best move is. So we're both,
I think, pretty happy to be partners. And we're of
course totally delighted that she has done as well as

(24:05):
she has for us, and we hope that her career
as a broodmare, will you know, take us to another level.

Speaker 1 (24:14):
You know what I've noticed, Show and Owners when you
went a bunch of races the relationships are usually a
lot are pretty good, right, Yeah. But anyway, Petra, this
just to own and breed something like this and watch
a horse for that many years what a thrill. Huh.

Speaker 6 (24:28):
Yes, indeed, Well, you know people have made comment about that,
but I've been doing this for a lifetime and this
is the culmination of an incredible out of determination and
staying power.

Speaker 3 (24:45):
Yeah, we're certainly very happy for you. You know, we've
seen your name for a long time. You've trained a
little bit in your own name, but this was a
great thing. Twenty twenty two is a four year old.
She want to stay at Emerald Down and she was
Washington Champion Older Phillire Mayor. Twenty twenty three, she want
to stake at Emerald Downs Champion Older Washington, Philly Or

(25:09):
Mayor this year. Boy, I can still see that race
real clearly in my mind. She started a long move
in that race Petra and Vince, and she sustained it.
I mean, it wasn't much past the half mile pool
where Alex Cruz got her going and she made a
for our first start of the year. That was real impressive,

(25:31):
was it?

Speaker 6 (25:31):
Sure was?

Speaker 3 (25:33):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (25:33):
So for we didn't know what was going to happen. Honestly,
you know, it was like this could work out real
well or it could not.

Speaker 3 (25:42):
Yeah, exactly, because she's been off for several months, many months,
and you know, you just don't know. But she's got
the race horse hard in her, and she's got the ability.
Tied the Emerald Downs record of consecutive years winning a
stakes race and those almost interesting.

Speaker 6 (26:03):
I didn't know that.

Speaker 3 (26:04):
Yeah, four years in a row, Petra, you know, made
three hundred and twenty thousand, most of it here, but
just just a pleasure to watch long or short. And
again she went on the grass and so yeah, I
saw her training so much this year. Vince is out
there as well, and saw Charlie either on her or

(26:26):
pony in her, and she just got the one start in.
But you guys, I don't think it was a serious
injury of any type. Was it that caused you to
retire her?

Speaker 6 (26:37):
Not a serious injury. But Charlie said she took a
bad step and they went over her thoroughly and they
said she's got a problem. And we do all of
the take any chances. So we said, okay, she's done
everything we've asked her to, so it's time for her
to be retired, I guess move on to a new career.

Speaker 3 (26:56):
Yeah. Everything you've asked to her, for sure. Just yeah,
the heart of a champion. She's won several close finishes
and the ability her record speaks for itself. So just
wanted to recognize her. You know, a couple of few
weeks ago, was looking forward to seeing her race in

(27:17):
the Washington Cup again.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
Yeah, I won't be the same without Blazing Bellow Blue.
A lot of excellent Washington Cup efforts. Did you mention,
have you found any ideas on who who you might
breed to or looked in at?

Speaker 4 (27:31):
It?

Speaker 6 (27:32):
Have not, Okay, we have not. I can tell you though,
that I did buy a curl and Mayor in full
to Grayson, all right, and she had a grays and
Philly this year last year. So I have a yearling
by Grayson coming up. Obviously I'm a Grayson fan.

Speaker 3 (27:51):
Yeah that's great, And yeah, you've got several months because
the breeding season really doesn't start till what late February
or early March something like that.

Speaker 6 (28:00):
Well, we should probably be finding a stallion sometime in January.

Speaker 3 (28:04):
Well, I'm interested in who that's going to be. I know,
Vince's as well, because Petres made a study of things
like this, and she sure hit a home run by
picking grays and for that cross with her Sky Mason Mayor,
she got Blazing Bella blue. And Alex Cruz was up
for so many of her maybe all of her steaks

(28:25):
wins at Emerald Down Stakes wins.

Speaker 1 (28:28):
Kevin Radkey.

Speaker 6 (28:29):
Kevin Ratty was on her I think in the Washington
Cup maybe as a four year.

Speaker 1 (28:35):
Old correct, getting that right. Alex rode zip and sevens
that day because he had just won the diskstaff on
her and.

Speaker 3 (28:41):
H yeah, we did a great job, you bet. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (28:48):
The horse, the Mayor, the Philly she knows where that
wire is and she has it figured out. I think
I think she does.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
Yeah, she definitely does. We know, yeah, we know that.
And about her to be around her, you know, you
raised her. She have any quirks, anything that makes her
personalizes her a little bit from other horses.

Speaker 6 (29:13):
It's a very nice horse to be around. Lovely. When
she was a baby. After she was wean, she would
come into the barn. I've see them in the barn,
the wheelings in the morning and she would have long
naps and if she objected to something. She would do
this little half kind of capriole type move. I addressed

(29:35):
her as the Princess because she had a real princess
attitude when she was young. Now she's addressed as with queen.

Speaker 3 (29:44):
Yeah. Well, nice demeanor, but knowing what racing's all about
is a great combination. So Blazing Bella Blue she is
going down in Emerald Down's history as one of the
all time great Philly and mayors and great horses. You
know again, four consecutive years winning a stakes race and

(30:08):
the Washington titles.

Speaker 1 (30:09):
Yeah, and I got one final question for Petra. I
always kind of liked that name, Blazing Bella Blue. Where
did you cut? I know that where the Bella part
comes up? Where'd you get the blazing?

Speaker 6 (30:19):
Well, actually, Charlie had a friend that came up with
that name, and it was discussed and we decided that
it was fine, but it was great.

Speaker 3 (30:26):
It's a cool name. Yeah, yeah, that works out. Boy,
It's funny how those really good horses. Yeah, the name
seemed to roll off the tongue after a while when
they continue to perform. Well, Blazing just sounds fast. Yeah, well, Petra,
it's been a great run and as you said, onto

(30:47):
something else second career, and let's hope she produces some
babies that can run anywhere near like her. That would
be great for Washington Racing and for yourself. But she
rewarded you and Charles Essex, you're co owner and co
breeder with some nice paychecks. But more importantly, well that's

(31:10):
pretty important. But I have rewarded, rewarded the fans with
in Washington Racing with a lot of great moments.

Speaker 6 (31:19):
So I have to give hats off to Charlie for
doing an exceptional job caring for her, training her, making
sure she stays safe. He deserves great credit for his
training abilities.

Speaker 3 (31:35):
Will will definitely listen to that, because Charlie's had a
long he's one of the guys. It's been here at
Emerald Downs twenty nine seasons now and wow, he said, Yeah,
he's had a lot of really fine years, over twenty
percent wins and can deal with a stakehourse like Blazing
Bella Blue retired now and just want to recognize her standing. Correct.

(32:02):
Thank you, Thank you Petro much, thank you for joining us,
and good luck in the future for sure.

Speaker 6 (32:09):
Okay, it's been a pleasure.

Speaker 3 (32:10):
Thanks, thank you, Take care bye. Bye bye Peter Lewin
joining us on horse racing Northwest and yeah, just uh,
you know, we've penciled in a few horses to run
our you know in washing cup races and so forth
and steaks. We kind of look ahead often and in fact,

(32:31):
let's see in our next segment, let's talk about some
divisional honors possibilities and we'll do that.

Speaker 1 (32:38):
You know, one quick thing, I just thought you when
Petra mentioned Charles Essex and we're talking about horses that
can win over several years stakes races. He also had
Handy and Bold and that one he won for four
years in a row. Yeah, so I mean when it
happens once, but it happens a couple of times, that's

(32:59):
a train or who can keep a good horse going
for quite a while, and that's not easy to do,
to keep the class level up.

Speaker 3 (33:07):
Yeah, that's a good story which has been told many times.
It's you can go to YouTube. Actually we've done aware
they now on Handy and Bold. You know, there was
people watching him train as a two year old and
Charlie was one observing him. He called Dori sore. She

(33:29):
was in the shower and he goes, oh, that's Okay,
I won't bother you or something. You know, No, no,
what do you want? No, go ahead, go ahead and
claim that horse. You like him, go ahead and claim him.
Then he claimed him out of his career debut, Handy
and Bold. He's a BCA bread By Bold Laddie who
was a good runner and a good sire up there.

(33:49):
And yeah, he won stakes in ninety eight, ninety seven,
Let's go the other way ninety eight, ninety nine, two
thousand and two thousand and one, and then his fifth
Governors in two thousand and three, the record or fourth governor,
fourth governors governors.

Speaker 1 (34:05):
Yeah, but yeah, just to keep a horse. You know,
winning is great over many years, but you know sometimes
they maybe lose a little out their fastball, you know
when they get up six seven years old. But to
keep going like that, and there's a real feather in
the cap.

Speaker 3 (34:19):
And your Bold also ran second in the Long Acres
Mile to uh Irish eyes are smiling two thousand and one. Yeah, right,
And that was a fifty thousand dollars payday. And I
remember seeing Charlie the next week. I go, well, you
didn't win the mile, Charlie, but you ran great and
fifty Grand's not a bad consolation, because you better believe

(34:41):
it is. Okay, we'll take a time out. We'll right
right back here on horse Racing Northwest. All right, So
in this.

Speaker 2 (34:58):
It doesn't matter if you love craps, blackjack machines or
dining on the finest Asian, American and Salish cuisines. It
doesn't matter what you do or where you're coming from.
What you do is all at Muckleshoe, an easy drive
from wherever you are, all roads lead to Muckleshoe.

Speaker 3 (35:22):
Mucosuit. Horse Racing Northwest continues with our third and final segment,
thanks again to Peter Lewin. Just what an enjoyable series
of years there as the breeder and owner, along with
Charles Essex of Blazing Bella Blue. Some nice Washington bred

(35:43):
bonus checks too there at the end.

Speaker 1 (35:44):
Of the Yeah, and you know, I thought that was
interesting how she picked out Grayson. That's another sire I've
noticed Emerald Downs. They performed very, very well over this racetrack.

Speaker 3 (35:55):
Okay, Well, you know we've got season ending honors which
we stow on Saturday and Sunday of closing weekend, and
all the horse categories and others many other human categories
as well, but two year olds, let's take a look
at the two year old division, Vince. The Gottstein, of

(36:17):
course is coming up, and that you know, that can
decide everything. Who wins that depending on what you've done.
But we I think we know who the favorite at
this point is going to be.

Speaker 1 (36:28):
Well, it'll be see that Tiger, you know, but I
thought he's not talking. Was really impressive the last two
races and really is a horse on the improvement. But
see that Tiger, you know. That win in early August
was probably the best two year old race we've seen.
I would say at the meet, precise timings dominated the

(36:48):
Philly division, but she was all out to hold off
another Cooper horse.

Speaker 3 (36:53):
Beauty Bart.

Speaker 1 (36:54):
And I didn't Ca mentioned to you in the winter
circle that they'd certainly consider the Gottstein for precise timing,
and those Phillies have done fairly well in it over
the years. So it's shaping up to be a great race.
We will have entries for that on Wednesday, the what
would it be the eleventh, I believe, so we'll know
next Wednesday who's in it.

Speaker 3 (37:13):
Okay, yeah, those are the two and then of course
Tom Wensle's won the last three Gottstein's and he's got
that juvenile by the name of Candy Kebayo who's by
twirling Candy.

Speaker 1 (37:24):
That's right, and that race has proven to be very popent.
That Candy Cabio race. I think it was on the
Long Acres mile card August eleventh. And yes, Tom and
George Tadaro, Bob Cappeletti and the gang have really dominated.
Was it minor League? Lloyd's logic and who's the one
I'm missing there? It starts with the m oh Mojo man. Yeah, Mojoe,

(37:51):
geez whatever. I bet on him that day. I should remember,
mister Mojo. Not quite, but anyhow, he's won three in
a row, three in a row, and they've all been
a pretty convincing score.

Speaker 3 (38:03):
So yeah, Midnight Mojo.

Speaker 1 (38:04):
Midnight Mojo. Yeah, Yeah, And so twenty twenty one, twenty three,
and yes, Candy Cabayo will be interesting horse. And if
you like it in the Gottstein, which I'm sure some
people will, you'll probably get a fair price.

Speaker 3 (38:19):
Yeah. You know, the Godstein's been a big field because
you know, the pot is good, the purse is good,
and it's a chance you know, nobody's gone to turn,
so everybody's optimistic on that end of things. Candy Cabyle
beat he's not talking in that maiden race on August eleventh,
he's not talking. Came off that won the Washington Cup.

(38:41):
So but see that Tiger's last two wins have been
super impressive and he's run really fast. He's by smiling Tiger.
So they are all up for let's face it, Horse
of the Meeting honors as well are kind of in
the balance. Precise timing is unbeaten, right, the big.

Speaker 1 (39:00):
Showing in the Gotstein. Yeah, precise timing would to win
four stakes wins. That would be a pretty lofty I mean,
I'd even have to consider that, oh sure. Yeah. And
another thing to consider it is a mile and seventy
yards with the Gottstein this year, and that will be
an X factor as none of the horses will have
race that far.

Speaker 3 (39:19):
Yeah, And just some little scuttle butt on in the
stable area this morning, precise timing looking at the Gottstein,
maybe hoping for an allowance even against Phillies, just thinking
that Gottstein's gonna maybe overfill. But those are all speculative

(39:42):
right now. But as Kay said after that race. Yeah,
they're looking at the Gotstein and Tom Winsle's got the
streak and Blaine right and wenzel or one two in
Steaks again with Wensil on top. So two year old's
horse of the Meeting, honors, money in the Gottstein and

(40:02):
divisional honors all on the line there three year olds.
We've had three different Steakes winners in the three year
old Colton Gelding Division. Vince.

Speaker 1 (40:11):
Yeah, began with Minor League and then he got a
little ailment in that race that was won by Tougher
than the Rest, and then Dynamic Secret with a very
nice win in the Muckle Shoot. Derby looks to be
the real comer among the group, but that's up for grabs,
I would think, because Tougher than the Rest has a

(40:32):
stakes win and a second at the meet, you know,
so he's got a pretty good resume.

Speaker 3 (40:38):
And Minor League does have two wins, does.

Speaker 1 (40:41):
Have two wins in Dynamic Secret. You know, probably looking
at him, I would think, yebe against older horses. Is
that possible?

Speaker 3 (40:49):
So very possible. He could be looking at the Bonnie Jenny,
could be looking at the Muckle Shoot Tribal Classic with
him that was his first route, the Muckle Shoot Derby.

Speaker 1 (40:59):
Yeah, and he came away from that field very nicely.
And you know, Bonnie Jenny's really had a nice here.
We mentioned rocket a day and he's not talking and exactly.
You know, she's got a great barn going. But if
Dynamic Secret goes in the gatste excuse me, in the
Minchleschut Tribal Classic, you know he could probably clinch it,

(41:23):
I would think with a good showing there, but tougher
than the rest, has a good resume in Minor League
you mentioned, with two wins.

Speaker 3 (41:28):
Dynamic Secrets record at the meeting is six starts, two wins,
three seconds and Minor league is two for three, Tougher
than the rest is one for three. Each of those
won a sprint Steak Minor League and tougher than the rest.
Among the Phillies, we've had three different stakes winners there
as well, a field Factor, Lapush and Arctic Breeze, Yeah,

(41:51):
all with wins. Lapush though with three wins at the
meet for Tom Wenzo and owner James Carlin to me,
has probably the best overall resume right at this point,
I'm agreeing there she's got as you said three wins.
She's three for five. She's won two sprints in good company,
and of course she won the Washington Oaks on mile Day,

(42:14):
the only route race steak in the division. So La
Push and those other two Arctic Breeze Appeal Factor have
only run twice at the meeting, each and each with
one Steak win. So La Push, Yeah, it looks like
she's gonna get the NOD. I would predict for top
three year old Philly Tom winsle runner four year olds

(42:36):
and up. This one's pretty interesting, Vince as you can.
As you know, even in the events of last weekend,
I had a little more drama.

Speaker 1 (42:44):
Armadoro beat sluiced his Wiz and slewsed his Wiz. Ran fine,
It's just the race didn't shape up for him, I thought.
Kevin Krager wrote a perfect race on Armadoro, sitting right
off the speed and got the big jump because he's
just you know, a little faster early than his wiz.
Loosed his Wiz, being the pro that he is, made

(43:05):
a good run down the lane. But all things being equal,
I wish we could kind of have a rematch, because
those two did come to the wire together in the
in the Governors and then his Wiz finished ahead of
them in the in the mile, so pretty evenly match
armd'oro got a career high ninety buyer for that win
last week. And his resume what He's got two fastest

(43:29):
miles at the meet and a dead heat in the
Governor's That's that's pretty powerful stuff. But if his Whiz
armed'ro not eligible for the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic, his Whiz
wins that race, then all of a sudden his resume
maybe looks a little better. It does.

Speaker 3 (43:49):
I mean, let's imagine him winning that race, the Muckleshoote
Tribal Classic, and he is defending champion, so that would
give him two wins at the meeting. Arma d'Oro is
three or five. Nieman's three for four with a Steak win,
but it's loosed. His Whiz would have two Steaks wins
if he wins the Muckle Shoot and the third in

(44:12):
the mile is pretty close to another steak win almost yeah, and.

Speaker 1 (44:16):
A very good third in the mile. Yeah. And you know,
and again last week he I think he has had
to be a little closer in the pace maybe than
they wanted to be, you know, and maybe that cost
him a little punch down the lane, I think, so,
you know, but but Armado has a darn good resume too,
so it's good. That's you know, that one's going to
require a lot of thought.

Speaker 3 (44:37):
Yeah, because Armadoro is going to have the Nieman are
going to have the most wins. It looks like unless
they get it, they could certainly get another race next weekend,
especially Nima's.

Speaker 1 (44:46):
Quite possible, right, It's possible.

Speaker 3 (44:48):
So uh, but all three of those have one steak win.
Armadoros loosed his wiz in Neieman and it's loosed his wiz.
He's got a little tiebreaker there with the third and
the mile. Oh, that has got some drama. And Papa's
Golden Boy could well be in the field for the
Muckle Shoot Tribal Classic we mentioned Dynamic Secret. We'll see

(45:11):
how that race shapes up. But of course it's restricted
to Washington Breads and BC Breads as well, and we
haven't seen a lot of back and forth the last
couple of years. We kind of need our horses. They
need their horses, you know.

Speaker 1 (45:24):
Right, Yeah, I imagine the knobs will come out this
week and we'll have a better thing. But again, I
think that race is shaping up fairly interesting.

Speaker 3 (45:31):
So yeah, well, when you got a closer like Slus
his Wiz, you know, they got to make it happen,
and they're a subject to the pace.

Speaker 1 (45:44):
I think sometimes though, like last year with Slews His
Whiz and the Muckle Shoot Tribal Classic, even the pace
against them, he just overpowers because he's just so much
better than those horses. But you know, if you got
a Dynamic Secret in there or Papa's Golden Boy, he's
gonna have to run a little bit, all right.

Speaker 3 (46:02):
The Philly and Mayor Division two Steaks wins from a
Loha Breeze, and of course Blazing Bella Blue won her
only start that was the Hastings, but a Looha Breeze
boy after mild Day when she just she has really
blown a couple of fields away.

Speaker 1 (46:22):
Yeah, and Blazing Bella Blue did did beat a Looha
Breeze in the Hastings, but that was the race where
Dynamic Miss and Loha bree twenty one and one. Yeah,
and in Aloha Breeze just you know, with the two
just overpowering Steaks wins. As much as I like Blazing
Bella Blue, you know, I think you just got to
give it to a Loha Breeze.

Speaker 3 (46:41):
The Loha Breeze was fourth in that hastings the fractions
twenty one and one to the quarter, forty three and
two to the half and the pace setters of Loha
Breeze being pressured by Misdynamic As you mentioned, Loha Breeze
hung on pretty game for fourth. Well, mister Dynammick finished

(47:02):
eighth and last that day, and Blazing Bell of Blue
Young Life Laura came on for the win.

Speaker 1 (47:07):
I alwis say, you know, a little editorial about the
buyers and the been a little bit lower, and they
probably should be for Alha Breeze because if you watch
her run in the Emerald Distaff, I mean, it takes
a very good horse to perform like she did around
the turn in a route race, you know, on the
stretch turn and just watching her go was awesome. It was,

(47:30):
you know, and she didn't slow down really that much
in the stretch. And you know, seventy seven is fine,
but you know, I think she could hold her own
with some pretty decent horses if she's given the chance
at some point. She's only raced three times this year,
so be interesting to see what they do with her.

Speaker 3 (47:46):
Mm hmm, okay, there is a look at the divisions
at Emerald Downs and claim her. Of course, two horses
have four winds, surprisingly perfect Mary Walker. Mary Walker is
in in this weekend in a.

Speaker 1 (48:01):
Much tougher spot for her. But you know, if she
does get the win this weekend, that would be five
and I would say that would probably make her a
pretty big favorite to win it.

Speaker 3 (48:10):
And five for five and.

Speaker 1 (48:11):
Five for five. Yeah, yeah, we've seen some great performances.
You know what you mentioned how many twenty.

Speaker 3 (48:17):
One with three wins? With three and a lot of
them are in this.

Speaker 1 (48:20):
Weekend and we'll be in next weekend too, So that's
the division that usually goes down to the wire because
so many of them are usually in action on closing weekend.

Speaker 3 (48:30):
That's right, that got to wait on that. And of
course there's a vote among media and officials for honors
at Emerald Downs. Vince takes care of that, passes that out.
That ballot will be distributed next week, So.

Speaker 1 (48:47):
Next Wednesday, once we have all the entries for closing
week Yeah, okay, let's see we've got our regular ending segments.

Speaker 3 (48:56):
Sports shorts, you know, the Mariners I don't talk about
him that much. Bill downs are podcast regularly the last
couple of years. Became quite the fan, and he's probably
a little frustrated, like so many are.

Speaker 1 (49:11):
But I've gotten some interesting text from Bill the last
couple of weeks. He took the over on him. He
cashed on him last year. But yeah, like a lot
of fans, he's a little frustrated this year.

Speaker 3 (49:21):
Yeah, with that great pitching staff, but you guys talking
and just you know, observing their two sixteen batting average
is the second lowest I'm seeing in Major League history
since nineteen hundred in the modern era, modern era. Yeah,
they're on.

Speaker 1 (49:39):
Pace to strike out the most and it's just you know,
they hired Dan Wilson, as I guess he's not the
inner manager. Sounds like he'll be here next year in
my mind, and no one has mentioned this. I think
they need to go outside the organization because something is
a miss when you see these guys leave here ti

(50:01):
Oscar and Suarez and even now Ty France and they
resume their hitting ways and they come here you see
huge regression from Julio Rodriguez. It's just all kinds of
red flags offensively within this organization, and I think you
need a new voice to come in here and just
figure out what are we missing here? You know, when

(50:24):
they can develop pictures tremendously, so full credit for that,
But something is wrong, as you mentioned, Joe with the
two sixteen batting average and all the strikeouts and all
the one run losses and a good pitching staff kind
of going to waste. And you all know the story.
So it's been an interesting year and it'll be a
huge off season.

Speaker 3 (50:47):
All right, Well I started that sport short.

Speaker 1 (50:50):
Sorry, I kind of commandeered it from No, that's fine.

Speaker 3 (50:52):
You've followed them a lot closer than I do. But
I know the batting average and looking at each player's
individual as they're listed in those box scores, it's just
really really low. Okay yourself, Okay, I got here's one.
I in the Emerald Racing Club. In twenty seventeen, we
had a horse that Mark Ditamenico sold us named Distinguishable,

(51:18):
and one of her babies is turning out to be
a pretty good horse named Incentive Pay.

Speaker 1 (51:23):
At broker Maiden. It's cost three hundred and fifteen thousand
by volatile out a distinguisher who's by Distorted humor. She
got claimed away from us for twenty five grand and
twenty seventeen. Well, she is the damn of incentive pay
who just ran a good third in the Hopeful, the
Grade one Hopeful at Saratoga last week and now has
a win and a third and two starts. So could

(51:45):
even see someone like him in the Breeders' Cup.

Speaker 3 (51:48):
Nice coat, Yeah, that's outstanding, distinguishable Racing Club horse. Okay, selections.
You know, I have been doing a lot of other
things the last few days. I don't I'm not doing
too good on selections for this week. And I know
last week I started by saying, you know, I'm I'm

(52:08):
not having that bad of a year really on winners
and good priced winners, but on this show I hadn't
done well. And then I come up with Rocket a
day last week, who paid what fifteen ninety seven or
something like that.

Speaker 1 (52:20):
Yeah, great ride by Wan Guitara is there wasn't she
on the outside and beat a pretty good feel hence
the price you got. So that was a tremendous selection.

Speaker 3 (52:28):
She could possibly they could be Bonnie Jenny could be
looking at the Washington Cup with her stretching her out.

Speaker 1 (52:36):
Yeah, why not? I mean, I would wouldn't surprise me
too much, you know, because she hasn't raced that many
times this year, and you got a State red race
for a sharp course, you got to at least look
at it.

Speaker 3 (52:45):
She's by Ada Boy Roy out of a forest wildcat Mare.
Doesn't exactly scream routing, but you know, we'll see. Okay,
we're onto trivia. Last week's question named the last time
an Emerald Downs two year old stakes race had no
runners coming off a win, and of course the Washington

(53:09):
Cup this year was in that category. He's not talking.

Speaker 1 (53:14):
I still can't believe that'stat. That's incredible.

Speaker 3 (53:16):
The race that he won, nobody was coming off of victory,
which is really rare, especially when you get later in
the season for a two year old stake. So he's
not talking. That was the fourth time in Emerald Down's
history two hundred and forty two year old stakes four
times has one runner was coming off a win in

(53:38):
that stakes race. And we didn't get any correct answers
on this. The most recent time it happened prior to
this year was twenty twenty two, just a couple of
years ago. It's Turbo won the Wtboa lads, and none
of that field was coming off a win. Then. Prior
to that, Vince, I know, you remember the Northwest Stallion
Stakes we had for several years and a lot of

(54:01):
first time starters. You know, it was a restricted race
being nominated, the stallion had to be nominated and so forth.
So in twenty twelve there were two of those, and
both of those races, none of the horses entered were
coming off a win. In fact, there were several first
time starters in each Master's Bluff won one of them,

(54:23):
and Valid Vixen Queen won one of them. So twice
that year, but only four times in Emerald Down's history.
That was kind of the trivia question. You know, I said,
Master we left, didn't he have a kind of a
good career for a while here? You know, I don't
remember that much about him. He's not the raise the
bluff that won the Washington Cup stakes. Okay, this the

(54:47):
he's not bluffing won a Washington Cut.

Speaker 1 (54:49):
So yeah, I think Master's Bluff's the one that got
loose one time and was running around in the infield.
He kind of had issues mentally A couple could really run,
but was kind of high wired.

Speaker 3 (55:00):
Anyway, two and forty two year old stakes four times.
It's all that nobody was coming off a win that
was running in those stakes, and yeah, that was kind
of a convoluted thing, but that's what I do.

Speaker 1 (55:13):
Someone figured it out, though, right.

Speaker 3 (55:14):
No, nobody figured this one out. Remember I gave an
opportunity for a little higher prize if you could not
even Russ yes day no no or Michael no. All right.
The new question named the only horse in the Emerald
Down's top ten career earnings list who didn't race in

(55:35):
the Long Acres Mile. Top ten earners in track history,
only one of them never raced in the Long Acres Mile.
Send your answers to trivia at emeralddowns dot com. That's
a show that's horse racing, Northwest Racing Friday, Saturday and Sunday,
October Fest and plenty of interesting events coming on. Thanks

(55:58):
for listening to horse racing Norworth Place.

New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
