Speaker 1 (00:02):
Muchos.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
It doesn't matter if you love craps, blackjack machines or
dining on the finest Asian, American and Salis cuisines. It
doesn't matter what you do or where you're coming from
mucous What you do is all at Muckleshoe, an easy
drive from wherever you are, All roads lead to Muckleshoe.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Mucosuit, Cooley Miss joining Laurel Elda center at Smoky River
(00:52):
of the outside, and then top Seco deeper on the track.
It's Cooley Miss in front, only narrowly. Smoky River fights
back on the outside. Now Cooley Miss draws clear from
a Smoky River and Laurel L and Cooley Miss has
gone away to win by a lynx.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
That was a race in June of two thousand and five.
It was the first Emerald Downs victory for jockey Jose Zanino,
and we played that Vince brun because Jose Zanino is
going to retire this Sunday at Emerald Downs, and I
wanted to pay tribute to him. The first race on
(01:27):
Sunday actually is going to be the Jose Zanino retirement
perse as well.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Jose Luis Zanino the pride to Argentina has had quite
a career here, spanning almost two decades, and he has
a chance to really go out on a high Sunday.
Let's face it, sleused to his Whiz is going to
be a big favorite and the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic that day,
and looks like the pace is going to be really lively.
He comes out of that race against Armadoro where it
(01:52):
was Armadoro is a good horse, too good a horse
to get that kind of race shape. But Jose has
a chance to go out on a real high, and
even if he doesn't, it's been quite a run.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
He is a really nice fellow, Jose Zanino. His wife
Christina of course works at the in the industry as well,
and Jose worked for Emerald Downs actually last fall. I
think he's going to continue to.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Pretty hand he's handier and you or I probably go right, yeah,
no comparison there.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
But Jose tied for leading stakes jockey last year with
Carlos Montalvo. It was a tremendous year, you know, and
the top horse, of course, loosed his wiz.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Yeah, and Jose is he's a little atypical here, and
that a lot of his wins are off the pace
and he's strong at that. The best example would be
the twenty two mile where he wrote a perfect race
and got sleused his Wiz to a two and a
half length victory. And he's he's been on other he's
been on, not that he can't ride a front. Remember
(02:52):
Obie Harbor, Hollywood Harbor. I mean those were fast and
good horses that Jose piloted. So just his strong career
and as you say, Joe a class act. And you know,
I know he's one of those guys who probably has
to struggle with the wait a little bit and that
can kind of take a toll maybe you know, mentally
(03:12):
and physically after a while. And it's just a credit
to him though that he's been able to do it
here for twenty years.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
Super guy Jose Zenino is going to hang it up
Sunday and Slese Tiz Whiz is his final mount. How
about that? And a big chance at winning a stakes
race in his final mount here at Emerald Downs. Hey,
it's closing week at Emerald Downs for twenty twenty four
seven pm Friday night and one thirty pm Saturday and Sunday.
(03:42):
Saturday is Fan Appreciation Day. Everybody gets in free admission
on Saturday. We're going to have a pony rider appreciation
perse on Saturday, and just a huge weekend with three
stakes races and Vince. We talked about possible weekend honor
for the horse categories last week, and so many are
(04:05):
still in the in the swing of things, it's fluctuating
right now as far as these races that can affect.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Right every year, there's so many big races on closing weekend,
but it seems like even more than normal this year.
It's going to come down to the wire. In fact,
I don't know how many categories we can put a
ring around already. There's not too many.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
Well, Juvenile Philly is right there in the sights of
precise timing. Who's three for three all stakes? But boy,
if a thousand miles, I think there's two Phillies in
the Gottstein, aren't they?
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Yeah? She says, hello's in there, and there might be
a third one too.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
After the races run, then you look back and say, wow,
that was pretty impressive. She says, hello, Yeah, two Phillies
in the Gottstein and a thousand miles has the two posts,
and I know justin Evans has been excited about running
her two turns all right, three steaks on on Sunday
closing day, first race one thirty. The seventh race is
(05:04):
the Washington Cup. Philly and Mayor and the three year
old Phillies are pretty tough in that race.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
I think so with you got I'm telling mom who
will probably be the favorite in there. Chai has had
a big meat for Kay Cooper and then Rocketed Day
has been a real comer at the meat for Bonnie
Jenny on the stretch out. And those three are you know,
might be your top three choices. Although you know I
was just talking to you off air that stay Sassy
(05:31):
has really put together a nice portfolio this year for
Charles Essex. So but Chai certainly with a nice win
in Allowance Company and then three white on both turns
and the Oaks and running third was was a real
big effort proving that route. I'm telling Mom, I mean,
I'm telling mom, excuse me what ran white on both
turns and the oaks and still finished a good third.
(05:52):
Proven she can route.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
Yeah, I could see her being the favorite in there.
On the morning line rocket a Day you mentioned, Yeah,
she's going for her fourth win at the meeting, which
if she wins the Washington Cup, filling or mayor has
four wins, you know you're going to have to think
of her as top three year old Philly because I'm
(06:15):
telling Mom would have no steaks wins. Chai would have
no steaks wins. The other contender, Lapush is Lapush who
has one steaks win and three wins yep and did
win an open steak the Oaks. So Lapush is kind
of the favorite right now, of course not eligible four
And speaking of four wins, where does that take us?
That takes us the claimer of the meeting, which is
(06:37):
hugely up in the air at this point, really up
in the air.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
We had a surprisingly perfect scot four at the meet
beginning of the eight thousand dollars claiming ranks and is
in a tough race morning line favorede on Sunday. I
think it's raised ten Executive Chef and a few others
are in there. It's a really great betting race. But
I would say a surprisingly perfect wins that race. I
(07:00):
would probably have to vote for that horse that would
be the only five time winner at the meet and
coming up through the claiming ranks would be a pretty
impressive resume to me.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
Yeah, I think he would be the winner. I think
he would get ninety percent of the votes because he
would be the only horse with five wins. Mary Walker
isn't running this weekend. She ran last week yep. And
he would also have an eight thousand claiming win twenty
five thousand claiming win most wins at the meet. Surprisingly perfect.
Has it all in front.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
Of you know, an executive means you were talking yesterday
executive chefs in that race, and he's kind of quietly
put together a great meat, made a lot of money,
three wins, I think in a second and four starts.
It been managed really intelligently by Blaine Wright, just getting
him into these winning spots. And he is a gamester.
He wants to beat you in the stretch.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
He's got very limited two turn experience. But at the
distan let's see what's the distance of this race lat MILETMA,
he's got to win in a second. At the distance, he's.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Gonna have to work out a trip from out there.
So but if he can do that, I might be
inclined to vote for him.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
Okay, Yeah, claimer of the meet is up in the.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
Air, and.
Speaker 4 (08:12):
There's a couple other horses that have three wins that
are in action to this weekend. I got that written
down here somewhere.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
I know.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Hey, Barmaid's one, Well it's in okay, Yeah, Rocket a
Day executive chefs apprisingly perfect, Hey bar Maid, not that
many on the list.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
Alex Cruz is going to join us here on our
final podcast during the regular season. We'll be with you
next week as well to recap the twenty twenty four meeting.
But Alex Cruz is going for his fifth consecutive title,
and I think mathematically it's it is Kevin Kraig, it
is nineteen mounts over three days.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
He does not, so he has wrapped it up. And
as we'll talk with Alex, the very very notework, the accomplishment.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
And we're going to throw in a little Hastings Park,
Hastings Racecourse talk to Dan Jukich is just going to
give us a little overview of their big day, which
is Saturday. The BC Derby is on Saturday. Tougher than
the rest winner of our Irish Day Stakes at Emerald
Downs is in the field in the BC Derby. He
did go a mile at of sixteenth and our Muckleshoot
(09:23):
Derby and ran second to Dynamics Secret That is his
only two turn race, tougher than the rest by Take
Charge Indy out of a Greatness Mare, and John Snow
is going to up saddle him up there for Heidi
Nelson and Dale Barbel playing right of course has been
his Washington trainer, so there's a little flavor in the
(09:46):
BC Derby from Emerald Downs. The BC Oaks is also Saturday.
Senora Vittoria, trained by Tim mccanna, a maiden, is in there,
but she ran second in our Washington Oaks.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
Here. Vince ran really well to get second in the Oaks,
and I think they've found what she wants to do, Golong.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
Go along and close ground. So also the Jack and
Sadie Diamond Futurities up at Hastings Dan will give us
a little bit of overview there. Emerald Downs Golf Tournament
next Tuesday, September seventeenth. If you'd like to participate and
haven't made a move yet, you can play by yourself
or you can have a foursome. It's one hundred dollars
(10:29):
per person. It's a shotgun scramble and all net proceeds
every cent of net proceed is going to go to
the Backstretched Chaplaincy program here at Emerald Downs, which helps
Stable area workers in so many different facets. So we
are doing a fundraiser. It's an eight am shotgun scramble
(10:49):
start at Auburn golf Course and you can check in
and would like to hear from you if you are
going to play, call me at two five three eight
eight seven seven two five three two eight eight seven
seven to two to one, or get a hold of
me at Emerald Downs this weekend if you'd like to
play in the Emerald Downs golf turn We got some
(11:11):
really nice prizes as well for teams, long drives, closest
to the pins, raffle prizes as well for the golf tournament. Okay, well, uh,
another thing that's uh. News and notes are updated correct
at Emeraldowns dot com. Yes, sir, there's a lot of
info on there, Vince. That's good work.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
Quite a bit, especially towards the end of the year
when all the stats are almost finalized for the meet.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
So uh yeah, horses with wins and leading human categories
and you know one interesting race is uh the race
for leading sire at Emerald Downs and Harbor the Gold
has been deceased for three years, and he's right up
there again, Vince, he.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Is, but he's getting quite a run from Coastguard. They
both had big weeks here last week with three winners
each as sires, and I think it's.
Speaker 4 (12:03):
Nineteen all nineteen all of Harbor the Gold won at
last year. I think it was really close.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
It was. I think it was either one or two
last yard, Yes, those those two again, so you know,
and I didn't. The legacy lives on last Friday night.
The first race was a Harbor the Gold firster and
it paid a big price. And I'm standing there going
you know this. How many times do you have to
(12:28):
see these Harbor the Golds win at Emerald Downs and
not jump on the bandwagons. Yeah, and it won easy
and paid you know, twenty bucks or something, twenty three
dollars twenty nine twenty candy. Yes, So that Harbor the
Gold still going strong.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
Yeah. And he has won eleven top winners titles at
Emerald Downs, leading sire of races one starting in twenty eleven.
The only horses that have beat him for a meat
k Hill Road in twenty thirteen, a Broage in two
tenty twenty two and the total winds are oh yeah,
(13:05):
well four ninety three. He passed the five hundred mark earlier.
Of course, this meeting Little Do four to twelve. He
passed Little Do several seasons ago. And it's just going on.
But Harbor the Gold has seven horses in over the
three days Friday, Saturday Sunday, and Coastguard has eight, so
keep an eye on that too. That could come right
(13:26):
down to the end. And speaking of the media guide
where I'm just looking at right now for these statistics
that is available at Emerald.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
Downstair, it is yeah, yeah, and won't be long. We'll
start work on the twenty twenty five to one as
the final stats will be hammered in following Sunday's eleven
race card. By the way, on Sunday that eleven races, Joe.
The final eight are all routes, which is kind of
a throwback to the old mile Day when it used
to be all routes, remember that, So that'll be kind
(13:56):
of fun. Those of you like to spectators, it's kind
of fun. If you go up by the rail there
you get to see the start and the finish, which
is kind of fun.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
Definitely, let's see and.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
Sunday, by the way, weatherwise, Saturday, I guess is a
little bit iffy, but Sunday's looking really good for closing day.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
So John Parker, let's see three, two out of four,
two out of five, three out of six, four out
of seven, five out of eighty five. Out of the
last eight years he's been leading owner.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
And he had a big win last was it Saturday? Yeah?
And that made number two hundred. That's right. He's the
only the second of the Crown where the Crown absolutely
aired in the opener and John with two hundred wins?
Do you think he can reel in Ron Crockett? Ron
Crockett with two sixty seven? I think John said three
(14:45):
hundred and three for his career including all tracks.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
And John has the leading Washington Bred earner for twenty
twenty four. That is Lonesome Boy, who's won a stake
at parks this year, want Ton Allowance at Aqueduct back
in the win. He is set to race in the
Pennsylvania Derby on Saturday the twenty first, so a weekend
a week from this Saturday. The Pennsylvania Derby. What's the
(15:11):
purse on that million? One million dollars.
Speaker 1 (15:14):
They have a couple other They have a kotillion I
think is the Philly Race and that's over five hundred thousand.
I think we saw they have a four hundred thousand
is at the Gallant Bob. I remember watching a bunch
of years a sprint, so yeah, that's their big day.
Speaker 4 (15:28):
Lonesome Boy had came out of the Wood Memorial with
just a little bit. Oh no, it was a race
after the Wood. He got a little ding there at Monmouth.
I had some minor surgery and he's had one race
since his comeback. He had a bullet work at Parks
earlier this week and they're looking at the Pennsylvania Derby.
He is a route horse. Lonesome Boy September twenty first Saturday,
(15:52):
the one million dollar Pennsylvania Derby, and he already is
the leading Washington bred hearner, leading earner at the meat
is precise timing with yeah, three for three, the first
horse to start a career Steak wind Steak winds sac
ice timing by the way, not in action. I think
there was a two year old race on the board
(16:13):
that didn't go for Sunday. We do have another two
year old race but a maiden race, a maiden race.
But yeah, precise timing. What a season three for three
with three steaks winds, Yeah, tremendous, tremendous Kay Cooper training.
Uh and she's by dialed in out of the Debbie
Paps mayor Peaceful Nation. Who's a daughter of peaceful wings?
Speaker 1 (16:34):
You know, Debbie. They've come up with some runners the
last few years.
Speaker 4 (16:37):
And they're going to have a whole bunch next year too.
Lots of babies by conveyance and algorithms standing at their
farm right now. Also, okay, well there is a look
at a lot of data. But let's talk about last
week here at Emerald Downs the weekly honors.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
Okay, here we go, and uh, you know what a
huge week our Valpak jockey Carlos slope Pez He had
six wins last week, including a triple up to forty
two wins. He was the leading writer at Turf Paradise
this year. Had a little bit of a lull there
in the mid season, but is really finishing out strongly.
Speaking of hot trainer of the week, Charles Essex one
(17:16):
with five of eight starters last week. Doubles on Friday
and Sunday, Charles up to four hundred and six career
wins in Emerald Downs. It's good for eleventh all time.
Muchael Shoot casino owner. They're cutting on a lot of
ways here, But how about Elder Mack. Two straight wins
for Chappelle Alpine Farms. That's Jared Chappell out in Utah.
(17:38):
You know, if you beat Gen Toong, you earned your
money because Jen Toong has just three real tough defeats
back to back to back quo against surprisingly perfect now
one against Elder Mac. Wayne Williams, the owner. He's such
a good sport about it when you talk to him
about it, because those those can be tough. He's back
in this weekend too, by the way, So congratulations Elder Mac.
Chappelle Alpine Farms. Wha bread of the week? Oh you
(18:00):
know this horse West Coast Bull Okay sharp Maiden victory
four and a half furlongs and fifty one point one five.
That's a fifty eight buyer, which for a two year
old is one of the top we've seen this year
at Emerald Downs. Now, granted it was four and a
half and he had things his way on the front end,
but he had been threatening to put a big one
together and he did it there. Bred by Gene Welch,
(18:21):
West Coast Bull is by Co Coastguard out of market formula.
She was by Market Tree now seven winning folds. Yeah
for market formula, but West Coast Bull Joe, you're part
of that one, right and uh, I think you guys
have a nice horse for next year.
Speaker 4 (18:36):
Got a little speed, a little.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
Bit of speed and the groom of the weak Ramone
Rendon Miguel Hernandez stable. He grooms Frisco Frills. That's one
we didn't talk about. She's got three wins going for four,
so Ramon run Dome grooms Frisco Frills and he also
grooms a tiro old Philly named Sappello La Fina. She
was a maiden special weight winner and runner up to
Precise Timing in the Lassies. And Miguel has had quite
(19:01):
a year here at Eminal Downs. He's one of the
recipients of the Dirkin Award this coming weekend, along with
Anne Wisdom. The Lindy Award is voted by the Emial
Downs shockeys, goes to Luis Reyes.
Speaker 4 (19:13):
Oh very good. Yeah, that's a that's a very highly
respected award.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
Uh and I think, well, they'll get their awards on Saturday.
Is the plan? Yep?
Speaker 4 (19:25):
All right? Uh yeah, West Coast Bull fifty one, that
four and a half time is second only to see
that tigers fifty one fly right at the meeting.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
See that tiger the favorite in the Gottstein And I
liked what was it? Kevin Kraeger rode your West Coast
Bull there, Lopez wrote Carlo Lopez, I liked the game plan. There,
You're on the fastest horse. He didn't mess around, straight
to the lead out of the inside and just it
was one of.
Speaker 4 (19:51):
The fastest gate breaks.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
It was. Yeah, it was extremely impressive. So, uh, West
Coast Bull, like, I say, buy some stock in him
for next years.
Speaker 4 (20:02):
In the morning line for the Gottstein.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
I have and see that Tiger is going to be
I think a pretty heavy favorite. I think it made
him nine to five and there's next lowest is five
to one. There's a couple of shippers up from northern
California that look fairly decent in there. So as you mentioned,
a couple of Phillies in the race, so a full
field of twelve.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
Yeah, and see that tiger I mentioned the fastest four
and a half at the meat. He also has the
fastest six and a half at the meat for a
two year old. He's fast.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
He's fast. The only question some may have is the distance,
But being out of Ross's Girl, I don't see that
being a problem. That damn potentially could have two Steaks
wins on the card with See that Tiger En sluiced
his whiz. Yeah, that's that's pretty lofty. He's pretty strong.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
Yeah, it is for one damn to have two Steak
winners on a card. So see that Tiger. Yeah, by
smiling Tiger Tom Winsle's won the last three Gottstein futurities.
He's going to have probably the second favorite. We're just
saying I made a third.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
Okay, so after he's not talking, who comes off a
very game that could go. I mean no doubt about it.
Candy's Cabaya will have some supporters, especially breaking out of
the one hole, which I think is a nice draw
going long and anything coming out of that race is
held up. Well, that was a strong race that Candy's
(21:26):
Cabayo won on mile Day.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
Mm hmm, all right, uh so Steaks races around the
country again. Hastings with a big day on Saturday, Churchill
Down is open again. They have a number of steaks.
Woodbine has a bunch of steaks on Saturday. Century Mile
has a really big day as well. So there is
(21:50):
a lot of full card simulcasting going on even with
the closure of Saratoga and del Mar. All right, we're
going to take a time out. We're going to come
back with jockey Alec Cruise here on horse racing Northwest.
Speaker 6 (22:06):
Muchos.
Speaker 2 (22:07):
It doesn't matter if you love craps, blackjack machines or
dining on the finest Asian, American and Salish cuisines. It
doesn't matter what you do or where you're coming from Mucos.
What you do is all at Muckleshoe, an easy drive
from wherever you are, all roads lead to Muckleshoe.
Speaker 3 (22:32):
Mucosuit.
Speaker 6 (22:36):
They have a quarter mile ago, gunning for gold at
the top of the stretches, running smoothly here, it's gunning
for gold. To lead them off the turn. Elbromesta's in
the chase and it's turbo third but gunning for gold
and Alex Cruz have opened up daylight on them now,
gunning for gold, open clear five or six and going away.
(22:58):
It's gunning for gold Home.
Speaker 4 (23:00):
In Front that was gunning for gold, winning at Emerald
Downs in August. A fast and impressive win for that
son of Harbor the Gold, trained by Vince Gibson and
ridden by one Alex Cruz, who Vince in the first
segment we mentioned, you know, he is on his way
to his unprecedented fifth consecutive Emerald Downs riding title.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
You know, and one of the pressive things when I
did a little research since getting here in twenty twenty,
Alex has averaged over one point five winners per race day,
which is an awesome statistic and shows the consistency too,
which is really important.
Speaker 4 (23:41):
Consistency. A hard worker, there's part of that, and a
hard worker in the morning. And he's joining us right
here in the TV studio at Emerald Downs. Pleasure to
have Alex Cruz here, who's going to be leading jockey
again and one more weekend remaining, Alex. Great to have
you here.
Speaker 7 (23:57):
Yes, sir, Yes, sir. Morning Bean's and Gon bonding, Yo.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
You bet so, Alex. You know you came here in
twenty twenty. I think it was a little bit roundabout
way that you got to Emerald Downs in the first place.
Tell us about that.
Speaker 7 (24:14):
Yeah, was not my plan to finish here. This was
when the pandemic hit the states, and I was looking
after Phoenix after the Meat of Phoenix finished, where I
(24:36):
can go after here and most states don't allow new writers.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
At that time at.
Speaker 7 (24:46):
That time at the racetrack, and I don't have any
idea or clue to go that time. And this was
called from my actual age table signer. Uh, this call
come from nowhere. He was looking for a rider that time,
(25:10):
and he make me uh, and I offered to come
here to em all down. I was a little bit
afraid to make that big move because I was so
far from from Watchington. I was in Oklahoma. From Phoenix.
(25:32):
I moved to Oklahoma trying to keep writing somewhere, and
Oklahoma didn't allow me to write over there. And that
was the only Uh.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
There wasn't a lot of tracks running at that time,
very few.
Speaker 7 (25:54):
Move I can do that moment, and I didn't think
it twice, and I said, what can happen? Yeah, he
told me that they will let me ride over here,
and I just take my stuff and let's go.
Speaker 4 (26:09):
Mm hmmm, let's go. And Uh, lots of thrills and
especially win since then, Vince.
Speaker 1 (26:16):
Yeah, but the hard part is you come to Emerald
Downs and no one, none of the horsemen really well
maybe a few from Phoenix, but you kind of have
to prove yourself right. They haven't seen you ride a lot, right.
Speaker 7 (26:27):
Not many trainers from from Phoenix over here. Uh. But
I I have that confident on myself. I was already prooved.
I was coming from from get the getting the title
that year, Ye, Phoenix, the help helped me to to
(26:50):
the people, you know, give me the chot that time.
Speaker 4 (26:56):
And yeah, winning the title is huge down in Phoenix.
I mean there are a lot of riders down there
in the winter. Yeah, it's a great place to spend
the winter. Yes, and you winning that title, you know,
your name was certainly out there and we knew about
you a little bit, but still coming into a cold
new track. But David Marble Singer, your agent, he has
(27:21):
done just a super job around here and you know
that now and you probably heard a little bit about him.
But he's a hard worker like you. You guys must mesh
pretty good together.
Speaker 7 (27:30):
Yeah, yes, there has still been there for the last
five years.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
Yeah, and Alex works hard in the mornings too. You
see him out there a lot, you know, and he
will work and he will get on horses in the morning,
and a lot of leading riders, you know, they can
pick and choose their spots a little bit.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
He's a workhorse in the morning and in the afternoon.
I think he's bridden like three hundred and fifty of
about four hundred races, so that's about eighty five eight.
You're out on the train. You loved to ride in races.
Speaker 7 (28:02):
Well, well, now that I don't have any show that
I need to take the horse from my wife.
Speaker 4 (28:08):
Yeah, but uh, yeah, the percentage of races that he rides,
and I think you enjoyed doing that. You'd rather you'd
certainly rather be outriding, yeah, and sitting in the jocks room.
Speaker 7 (28:19):
Yeah. Like I say, it's like mandatory here that I
need to be riding in a full car. If I
don't ride one race, I'm already what I can do.
What I can do, you know, I can stay in
the jocks room.
Speaker 4 (28:32):
Well, and you know, I think some of that might
come from you winning the title every year too. You
you have a position that you want to protect, protect,
and you want to move forward and to do that,
you know, you need to have mounts.
Speaker 7 (28:47):
And yeah, yeah, if I don't see my name all
the races, I start getting stress or warrior, what is happening?
What I'm doing wrong? You know I'm losing business or
something I'm doing wrong to fix it?
Speaker 1 (29:01):
And me and Joe have talked. This'll get your opinion
on this. Seems like the toughest colony in twenty twenty
four we've had here. There's some good riders here.
Speaker 7 (29:08):
Every single year, nice writers every single year, shown new faces. Yeah,
we got nice, nice, tough riders in here.
Speaker 1 (29:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (29:19):
Last year it was stepped up, and this year even more.
I think. So Alex has has had to work hard.
He has done that and pretty darn well known around here.
But five titles, and.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
I think almost all of his titles have been pretty
clear except for one. Yeah, Julian Couton in twenty twenty
one and went down to the last race.
Speaker 7 (29:41):
Wow, last yeah, last day of racing.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
Yeah. But every other year you've pretty been pretty comfortable
for the title. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (29:48):
Oh the first year especially, I think he really won
by a wide margin. Twenty twenty, the COVID year.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
Yeah, remember how by twenty over one guitarists.
Speaker 7 (29:57):
I think it was Yeah, gott he Wills.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Oh, Gary Verry well, Gary Well right, okay, Gary Wales
was the leading nineteen Yeah, yeah, Gary had a big
year in twenty nineteen.
Speaker 4 (30:09):
But anyway, Yeah, Blazing Bella Blue has been one of
your top mounts over the last couple of years. And
you know she went out a winter you on her back.
That was a heck of a race too, Alex.
Speaker 7 (30:20):
Yeah, my best horse in my career. Okay, make more
than probably a quarter a million just with her.
Speaker 4 (30:27):
Yeah, and that was a heck of a ride because
she had not raced in a lot of months. Yeah,
and it seems like you got into that race, you know,
pretty early. Maybe she wanted to go, she was fresh.
Speaker 7 (30:41):
But her only first start the meet.
Speaker 4 (30:45):
Yeah, only race for Blazing Bella Blue. She won a
stake race for the fourth consecutive year. But working hard
in the mornings is great. I'm sure you know, Marbles
loves to see you come around the corner because he
knows you're going to work hard, and people know who
you are, they want you, and you know, there's a
lot of loyalties in this business, of course, you know,
like Carlos Montalvo's had two good seasons here. But you
(31:08):
know he gets into Tom Winsle barn, which is a
great barn to be in. And so he ye, yeah, yeah,
Carlos in the in the in the r okay yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
And and and one thing you know I pointed out
was Alex It's really impressive because our top three trainers
with wins Justin Evans, uh, Blaine Blaine, right, Franklin Coarelli.
You only got five wins for those three guys. So
you ride for just about every barn at this racetrack.
Speaker 7 (31:39):
Idea, that's the idea. I can focus in just one barn.
You know, I need to be riding for the entire
box side, you know.
Speaker 4 (31:47):
Yeah, and if you do want to ride, you know,
eighty some to ninety percent of the races that are carded,
you do have to ride for all the trainers. But
you've built that position for yourself with your hard work
and your success and uh so uh and your weight.
You know, you're you're quite tall for a rider, is
it five to nine?
Speaker 7 (32:07):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (32:07):
Wow?
Speaker 4 (32:08):
Yeah, that that's tall. But you don't have that much
of a weight issue I've heard. I mean, it's I.
Speaker 7 (32:15):
Don't even know what he's a hot box Huh, I
don't have any idea.
Speaker 4 (32:19):
Is that just a myth? Does he just want to
keep that myth out there that he's not going to
ride overweight? Or that's true?
Speaker 7 (32:25):
You can never use the hot box, that's something.
Speaker 4 (32:29):
Yeah, for a guy your your size, your Yeah, I
don't run.
Speaker 7 (32:33):
I just come straight from home and.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
You know, and Alex shared that when he was learning
to ride in Puerto Rico at the Jacksonville they didn't
think they thought because of his size that he was
not going to make it an.
Speaker 7 (32:47):
See me, you have to throw you way right, and
they don't believe me.
Speaker 4 (32:51):
But you know, hey, that is a good thing for
you because uh, yeah, that that can that can get
a lot of tall guys in the end having to
reduce a lot. But so yeah, the reputation and uh,
your consistency out there and your finishing ability. Uh, you've
been a lot of a lot of tight ones this year,
(33:14):
and uh, you have a little little edge in there
with your finishing. I think you're pretty confident when you
hook up with somebody else at the top of the stretch.
Speaker 7 (33:23):
Yeah, when you got another rider just beside you in
that stretch came and you you feel like that adrenaline,
you know, and you get like more air from nowhere.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
Huh.
Speaker 7 (33:40):
Yeah, it's a different feeling. You obviously you want to
win and you're gonna look stronger than if you are
going by yourself and the stretch.
Speaker 4 (33:51):
Ah.
Speaker 7 (33:53):
I like the competition, you know. I like the competition.
Speaker 4 (33:55):
Oh, and that's there. You know every race there's some competition.
And getting the best out of a long shot too,
you know. I mean getting a long shot to run
third or fourth is cool. I mean people notice that stuff.
Speaker 7 (34:08):
Minig always always, no matter if a long shot, I.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
Think. I think one of the most amazing statistics Alex
has here was when he was forty six straight days.
I think it was with at least one win. That's right,
he holds that right, and that kind of shows the
consistency thing there too, And that's being tough, amazing street.
Speaker 7 (34:31):
I still can't believe how the idea for that long. Yeah,
I've been trying for the last four years to do
it again.
Speaker 4 (34:39):
Being impossible, really tough, really tough to do that.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
Yeah, everything has to line up and you have days
where it's just you know, there's some horses just don't
have it, and that happens. I remember that, Remember that
right on Queen Breezy. You remember that I had this
show was a last race and we were watching upstairs
and Alex was going to keep that streak alive. He
rode that horse out of the gate, and uh, you
(35:04):
just will to win out of that horse for Boz
that day.
Speaker 7 (35:07):
Yes, yes, I remember Queen Breezy.
Speaker 4 (35:11):
Keep the streak going. Yeah, and uh, well you got
to win last Saturday aboard Poverty Bay, moved up to first.
That was That was a stretch run with you and
Luis Reyes on nine to one one and uh, you
hit left hand a little bit. There was some brushing,
you know.
Speaker 1 (35:31):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (35:31):
I didn't see too much in the race, But tell
us what happened down the stretch.
Speaker 7 (35:35):
Uh, what's a tough decision there my opinion, Uh when
we call like a quiety, Uh that his horse was
logging in and was on top of my horse the
whole stretch. And my horse feels so much pressure, and
(35:58):
I was trying to don't let my horse like feel intimidated.
And I used my horse is a big horse to
push the other one. I know I left handed, but
the pressure from the outside her was too much and
I'm trying to push his horse, don't get so put
(36:22):
in so tight to a rail, and probably the people
are not seeing that that his horses land on my horse.
The horse is not giving me enough room to keep,
you know, head to head fighting for that first place.
Speaker 4 (36:37):
And when you know, on the photo finished.
Speaker 7 (36:39):
Showed my horse lose balance when we bump my horse
lose balance and still come back and lose the race
by nothing looks like the heat.
Speaker 4 (36:47):
Yeah, so you know, no one can blame you.
Speaker 7 (36:51):
If we going straight the whole way, my horse will
win the race easier.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
That was you guys went out of the Yeah, race
started to finish. That was a great to the stretch.
Speaker 7 (37:04):
We are fighting and we are he can The old
rider came and hit left handed, and I think that
was the mistake that affect him to get disqualified. You
don't have enough room to hit left handed.
Speaker 4 (37:17):
And that was ten to one winner for Alex. There
not too many of those.
Speaker 1 (37:22):
Yeah, and that was for Joe Toy. You and you
and Joe have had a lot of success the last
couple of months too.
Speaker 7 (37:27):
I've noticed you're being on fire for the last few weekends.
Speaker 4 (37:32):
Yeah, and that helps, and uh, you know you when
it down at turf paradise. Uh do you ride for
a lot of Emerald people? I know you do. And
then uh, but as you said, when you run a
ride as much as you can, you're going to ride
for everybody. So Emerald people and local people down there.
Speaker 1 (37:53):
Yeah. Yeah, when you a turf paradise, of course they
do have a turf course. Yes to you as a jockey,
what's the difference when you ride a dirt dirt rider.
Speaker 7 (38:04):
I come from a country that don't have a third course. Ah,
it's not that easy to ride. At the turn. You
need to make ah best decision that you make on
(38:25):
the dirt they right a couple a little bit more tight, yes,
and you need to save more ground, can go so
wide on the turn, and like I said, you need
to make the right decision, but quick because sometimes you
are on the rail and you stay the whole rail
(38:48):
the whole way and you don't have anywhere to go.
You know, sometimes you have second to get out from
there and you can win the race.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
You know.
Speaker 4 (38:58):
I could see Alex be in you know, with a
little a little more experience, he could be a really
good turf rider because.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
He can finish, He can find it. But I kind
of agree with dirt rider because dirt right much jockey
is much more aggressive. You know, the turf is more weight, right.
Speaker 4 (39:15):
Yeah, you get pack at the quarter pole and then
you make your move.
Speaker 7 (39:18):
Yeah. Always you need to have a nice horse.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
Yeah, helped.
Speaker 7 (39:24):
When you have a nice horse, you got rider.
Speaker 4 (39:26):
These jockeys like to get on the best horse and
the rest. Why not, why not get the best?
Speaker 7 (39:34):
You know.
Speaker 1 (39:34):
One interesting thing when Alex won that title at Turf Paradise,
he carried his own book, is that right? Which was
really unusual for a leading rider.
Speaker 4 (39:43):
Oh my gosh, very unusual.
Speaker 1 (39:46):
And he beat some good riders down there, like Scott Stevens,
who was the king down there, and.
Speaker 7 (39:51):
He's brying when gold BLENK Corbett was there top Yeah,
Ryan gee, I got they was the top five riders
over every single year. Yeah, only only half less than
a year over there, just one meat. Yeah. I get
there around twenty twenty eighteen and wrote for like three
(40:15):
months and did pretty well. Like the the the racetrack,
this area there was pretty nice, warm, and I decided
to come back next year, and the next year I
carrying my own books. Something happened with my Agemagen was
(40:40):
how in health issues, and I started carrying my book
by my own, on my own, and Lucky have an nice, huge,
awesome meat that day and get the title.
Speaker 4 (40:59):
Yeah that that is a difficult task without an agent.
So you're riding. I'm telling mom for Joe Toy in
the Washington Cup on Sunday, and you just won a
nice sprint aboard her. You know that was a horse
that you know, you could almost say, boy, that horse
really almost deserves a win this year because she's run.
(41:22):
You've had some tough trips on her in those Steaks races.
I mean she's shown ability. I'm sure you're excited to ride.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
Oh yeah, yes in the in the Oaks the Oaks.
Speaker 4 (41:32):
She ran third in the Oaks behind the Push and
neither the first two finishers are in the race on Sunday.
So she can go two turns right, you're.
Speaker 1 (41:41):
Confident on her.
Speaker 7 (41:43):
She can go any distance.
Speaker 4 (41:45):
By tail of a coatie out of great Mom, that
good brood mare. So that that's a really live mount
on Sunday, I'm telling Mom in the Washington Cup.
Speaker 1 (41:55):
Yeah, she's a morningline face. Okay. The three year olds
look better in that race than the older. Phil is
in Maris, But yeah, I think she's nine to five.
Speaker 4 (42:02):
I'm here, and Alex is pretty good in basketball too.
I heard, yeah, I.
Speaker 1 (42:06):
Heard a rumor about that.
Speaker 4 (42:07):
Your team did okay in the In the Backstretch tournament
last this week.
Speaker 7 (42:11):
We win the tournament. Yeah, we win the tournament. My
team was joined by Louise Reyes.
Speaker 4 (42:19):
And Corey Correct but Blaine's assistant. Yeah, system, he's good,
big guy to have in there compared to riders. But
that's good. You enjoy playing basketball a little.
Speaker 7 (42:35):
Hungh, Yeah, I really that was my when I was
a lay tiny my whole life, I was dreaming to
be a basketball player and go to the big leagues,
NBA all that.
Speaker 4 (42:50):
Yeah, a lot of us.
Speaker 7 (42:51):
It's really tough to get there. And decided to wait.
When I turned fifteen years old, I said, I'm getting
old and I don't what.
Speaker 1 (43:00):
What are the biggest sports in Puerto Rico where you
grew up?
Speaker 7 (43:04):
The Basketball, Bowl, base ball, boxing.
Speaker 1 (43:07):
Those horse racing pretty big?
Speaker 7 (43:10):
Oh it's big. Yeah, yeah, he's big. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (43:14):
So many good jockeys from you bet Puerto Rico.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
You know.
Speaker 4 (43:18):
Well, it's uh coming up on another end of season
here at Emerald downs and Alex Creuz it's been pretty consistent,
you know, he a couple of those years, or last
year he had to come from behind a little bit,
didn't he. Luis Negron had the lead for early on.
Speaker 1 (43:35):
Yeah. Yeah, but let me see, Alex is so consistent
and steady. He just here where he'll wear you down'll
he'll get there. So getting those one two wins, three
wins and make one hundred Joe one hundred and eighteen
multiple win days since he's gotten here, I mean one
hundred and eighteen days with at least two wins, and
that's pretty awesome.
Speaker 4 (43:56):
Yeah, on our meats of you know, fifty some days, Yeah,
for the most part, so that that's that's quite a feat.
So congrats Alex, it's uh, you know, your consistency, uh
is just a pleasure to watch and your ability to
make an exciting horse race for yourself and the fans.
It's been great and you'll be recognized again this weekend.
(44:18):
And a lot of work to do this weekend. A
lot of mounts left still.
Speaker 7 (44:21):
Yes, yes, pretty basy this weekend see weekend wings.
Speaker 1 (44:27):
And you'll be back in twenty twenty five going for
six for sure, all right, this is.
Speaker 4 (44:32):
A pretty good home for him now and we're uh boy, yeah,
we'd be where's Alex if he didn't. So best of
luckdown at Phoenix. But let's finish it off in style
and too tremendous feet. Five consecutive win five titles anytime
and throughout a career, it's pretty good. But to win
five in a row at one track, well, it's unprecedented.
(44:53):
In the States, it is, and Washington has a long,
long history and through a red racing, so that's quite
an accomplishment. Congrat again, yeah, thank you, congrats Alex Crews
joining us here on horse Racing Northwest macOS.
Speaker 2 (45:11):
It doesn't matter if you love craps, blackjack machines or
dining on the finest Asian, American and Salish cuisines. It
doesn't matter what you do or where you're coming from macOS.
What you do is all at Muckleshoe, an easy drive
from wherever you are, All roads lead to Muckleshoe.
Speaker 4 (45:35):
Mucosuit horse Racing Northwest our final segment of the final
show of the final week at Emerald Downs in twenty
twenty four, again Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday, Free admission
for all Sunday. We'll recognize the top honor honorees for
(46:00):
both human and horse throughout the card and we'll just
have a lot of great racing on Sunday as well. Okay,
we're going to hear from Dan Jukich right now on
a big Saturday at Hastings up in Vancouver, BC.
Speaker 5 (46:15):
Well at Derby time in the Northwest. And that said
Hastings Racecourse this Saturday two point thirty is our first race.
The Derby goes as the sixth race at five oh five.
Quite a card we've assembled. Also, we've got four stake races,
two one hundred thousand dollars races for the two year
old Jack and Sadie Diamonds of course on one hundred
(46:37):
and twenty five thousand dollars PC Derby, and we've got
a full field of twelve in there. That gate's going
to be rocking, and followed by the British Columbia seventy
five thousand dollars on the line for the three year
old Phillies with black type Well to BC Derby. I
think you want to be prominent early if you're going
(46:58):
to get any piece of the action here. We got
four invaders from Alberta. We got one from down south
at Emerald Downs and tougher than the rest, and he's
got speed and cod be tough to catch. He's in
the Barne john Snow up here and Babido Harvey, a
newcomer to Hastings, is gonna ride him for john Snow
and you know what, he's come up with a few
(47:20):
winners this year as Babido and not a bad rider
coming from the Islands down south and I don't know
it's a I think it's a very tough race. Jay
Dutton race very well in the Canadian Derby, but he's
got the eleven hole. He's gonna need the position. Diocoly
another come from behind her, is gonna need a way through.
(47:42):
And of course the early morning favorite is August Rain
for Peter Redacoff and barb Heads who come off the
Canadian Derby wind. They won by on just under three lengths,
but they got stopped pretty good at the three eighths pole,
having to re rally and Abadeo Perez had to get
after him pretty good ship over to Ebonton. He's come back,
(48:03):
he's trained, he's had to work, he's had a happen
forty eight and four. I don't know. I think he's
the best horse in the race, possibly, but there are
some factors that could get him beat. Then we move
on to the BC Oaks following the BC Derby, and
hey we've got one from Emerald Downs. Come up here,
(48:23):
Kevin Kriger to ride for it's under trainder Dave Forrester
and that's Senora Victoria, a maiden coming into this race,
and certainly we'll see how she goes. She looks like
she's an off the pace runner, but could be tough
in this race of honor. Perfect five for five at
Hastings and it's going to be the one to beat.
(48:45):
But there again, she's coming off a race at Century Mile,
had the trip the ship across the mountains, and we'll
see how she does. But all in all, Joe a
great card here and hasty trace course. If you get
a chance to make sure you tune us in because
it should be a great betting.
Speaker 4 (49:02):
Day thanks to Dan again tougher than the rest involved
in the b C Derby. He has run well at
Emerald Downs this year, tougher than the rest. A son
of Take Charge India Kentucky Bread trained at Emerald Downs
by Blaine Wright ran three times at the meet. All
three steaks had to win a second and a third,
so he's certainly a contender for meat and honors. He
(49:25):
won the Irish Day, He was second in the Muckleshoot
Derby to Dynamic Secret and third to Minor League and
powerized in the Auburn Back in June. Okay, time for
some sport shorts. What do you got, Vince well?
Speaker 1 (49:40):
I mentioned that the final eight racest Sunday are routes
here at Emerald Downs. You know, we've had ninety two
routes at the meet and forty nine have been won
by post positions one and two.
Speaker 4 (49:53):
Whoa, So yeah, I've been on the one thing for
years and years and years and it's no big secret,
but you know it's huge. And the two boy, that
forty nine out of ninet twenty nine out of ninety
two over sixty percent or well close.
Speaker 1 (50:09):
Yeah, And then of course there's you know some six
worse and a few five horse fields in there and
all that where that you know, the percentages chances of
winning are and be a little higher, but still that's
pretty dominating statistics for inside posts going along.
Speaker 4 (50:21):
It certainly is okay, I'm going to talk about the
Muckle Shoot Tribal Classic, a little bit which used to
be known as the Washington Championship, and of course that
started a long time ago back in the early forties
at Long Acres of course called Train Signal won the
first two. He won it at age eight, and he
won it at age ten, forty two and forty four,
(50:43):
nineteen forty two and nineteen forty four. Track was closed
in nineteen forty three during World War Two, and just
a lot of great events. The first one I saw
was real memorable when rock Bath. I still didn't look
up how much weight he was. It was over one
hundred and thirty pounds, and he I couldn't see him winning.
(51:06):
He was odds on and he ended up running forth
beating about a half length. That was a great race.
Bouncing Kim won at a four horse finished rock Bath.
But the next year Turbulator in nineteen seventy two, and no,
I'm not bringing John White onto the show for all
you listeners there, but Turbulator did not race in nineteen
(51:27):
seventy one. After that amazing year in nineteen seventy he
didn't race in seventy one. He came back in seventy two.
He ran in the mile, only got beat a couple
few lengths. But boy, in the Washington Championship, he closed
the fastest I have ever seen a route horse close,
and John White has the figure on that. He closed
(51:47):
eight lengths in the stretch well, which means from the
eighth pole to the wire, which is amazing, especially going
two turns. But that was just I mean, my mouth
was a gap. Great Papa was coming off his World
recurred at six furlong set earlier that month, but turbulators
seventy two Washing Championship was pretty amazing. Larry Pearce was
(52:10):
up for Leonard Roberts. Owner breeder Tom Crawford had passed
away before that. Leonard Roberts took over training duties. Another
one at Long Acres in nineteen eighty six. Captain Condo
was having a good summer over at Playfair as a
four year old. He came over to Long Acres for
(52:31):
the first time ever in nineteen eighty six August and
he won. He won his first Long Acres start. He
beat Free the Gold, who came into that race with
six wins in a second in his previous seven starts.
Condo won it and went back to Playfair, then came
back for the Washington Championship in nineteen eighty six, and
(52:52):
you know who beat him that race. I think we
did talk about that. Cissy's Heller beat him, the three
year old Cissy's Heller. Just I remember the horse won
eight races at that nineteen eighty six long Ancres meeting,
one off the record, and he won eight of nineteen starts.
He won the Pritik of the Washington Championship and the
Puget Sound Handicap in his final three starts. But he
(53:15):
beat Captain Condo by a neck in the eighty six
Washington Championship. It was a hell of a race. Captain
Condo was twelve to one in that race. And of
course Captain Condo would go on to win three straight
Washington Championships eighty nine, ninety and ninety one and was
in the second class of the Washington Thoroughbred Hall of Fame.
(53:36):
One of the all time greats from this state.
Speaker 1 (53:38):
I wanted to, yeah, for sure, I wanted to recognize one.
Another nice win from last week was Sunday's fifth race,
a horse called Flying by a Mayor coming off a
layoff and she's one. I could easily made Washington Bread
of the Week too. And you know you talked about
West Coast bull breaking from the gate. This was a
good old wire job here at two broke really sharply.
(54:02):
And then when a half and forty four and two,
holy two tabella, the big favorite was lapped up on
it looked like gonna blow by, not at all, flying
by four and a quarterlink win in one eight and four.
And this is another one by Coastguard out of a
nice mare called Window Flying, so good job by Kimberly Johnston,
owner trainer. And then that was written by Sylvia Amador.
(54:26):
You know, Sylvia has gone a long time without an
agent at the meet, and he's quietly finishing pretty strong.
He's got to see that tiger in the Gottstein and
he's really been riding well.
Speaker 4 (54:37):
He has, he has, and he's picked up his steaks
wins at this meet as well. Other than him and
Carlos Montalvo, those guys are really doing well in steaks. Okay,
flying by trained by Kimberly Johnston. Yeah, a daughter of Coastguard,
as you said, Harbor, the Golden Coast Guard. The sires
(54:58):
each had three wins last week, So yeah, Washington Championship
Muckleshoot Tribal Classic has a ton of history. Striker PhD
won the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic three times at Emerald Downs.
He didn't run in it one year in twenty fourteen,
the first year he won the mile, they skipped it.
But he did win it the next two years, and
(55:20):
of course he won it in twenty thirteen when he
had run all those seconds, including the mile. And so
many Washington Bread Mile winners have won the Muckleshoot Tribal
Classic at Emerald Downs. Ed Nader saber Tooth, Let's move on,
Washerman of course won it, Noose of Beach won it,
and Striker PhD of course. So it's been a good
(55:43):
end of the race after you win the mile, if
you're a Washington bread and it's coming up this Sunday
s Los Tiz Whiz looking to win it for the
second consecutive year, and you know that older horse division. Shoot.
I mean, we'll wait for that race to be run
to do our voting, because that would of him two
steaks wins and a third in the mile, which of
course is very huge. Armaday Oor beat him on the square.
(56:06):
A couple of weeks ago, Armada or Dead heated with
slewst Is winning in a steak, and then people that
like Nima Nieman didn't get a chance to go two
turns at the meet, but was an awesome sprinter and
beat both of those horses in sprints. So it's kind
of down to those three, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (56:22):
I think? So it's uh, And we got to mention
again you got to race at least twice to be eligible.
Although you know, I was thinking this year we could
make a rule if if you win the Long Acres
Mile back to back years, you only have to race once.
Speaker 4 (56:36):
You know, I'm thinking of the same thing for five
Star General. I go, bullshit, I got something that was
the race of the meeting, and that horse is you know,
I mean we even.
Speaker 1 (56:45):
Thrown no one would complain about that.
Speaker 4 (56:47):
Now we've thrown it out. That horse is certainly eligible
for the Washington Thoroughbred Hall of Fame because of five
participations in our biggest race, two wins, five for five
in the money. He helped make this a really exciting
racing season. All right, selections, let's couple here pretty quickly.
(57:10):
The feature race on Friday is going to be the
fifth race. I went with Dinard. I mean he's won
against the bias, he's won three out of four. Really second, yeah, man,
there's another horse that could get to four wins.
Speaker 1 (57:23):
He came away from that field last time too, and
that was that was That was a sharp, sharp win.
Speaker 4 (57:28):
A true claimer and what a race that is. Roll
dem Bones is in there, the horse not.
Speaker 1 (57:32):
Sure what to do with him? Was the Was it
the sloppy track that moved him up so much? If not,
he's going to be a handful because he certainly had
the biggest figure and that was he beat a good
feel there.
Speaker 4 (57:42):
Yeah, quite a few horses out of the Hollywood Harbor
Finale like Mister Fireball, Mirror Image are coming out of
that as well. But Denard a little step up in class.
I think he can handle it. In six and a half.
He's won two straight at that distance. That's a Friday
night night feature. Saturday, We've got some good races on
(58:03):
Saturday as well. The seventh race is a sprint and
it's a claiming race. It's the non winners at two.
Let's go to the fifth race, which is a mile
for Phillies and maryas as you mentioned. Frisco Frills is
in there, Young Life Flora, Arctic Breez, Ropers and Ranglish,
Jamie's Inheritance, Victoria's Charge. I did go with Arctic Breeze
(58:27):
because she has a whole lot of two turn experience
and some good races, actually those good mile races. We're
in maiden company at Golden Gate. But of course she's
a stakes winner here. You know, Victoria's Charge is going
to go two turns for the first time. She was
just claimed by Dan Markle, but she's out of feel
the charge that damn won four routes of six wins,
(58:52):
and she won routes at Santa Anita Turf Paradise and
two at Emerald Downs, so there's some route in that family.
And of course Minister's Wildcat was kind of a sprinter
after winning the Golden State Mile early in his three
year old year. He was a sprinter. But you like
that speed and that route background for victorious charge, and
(59:13):
she's going to be a price in there. Frisco Frill's
going for her forth. They did go with Arctic breeze
and there, and I haven't picked the Gotstein yet. It's
going to be hard to go against see that tiger,
but who knows. Last year I came up with Lonesome
Boy and he didn't he didn't count in the race.
I felt like, all right, you picked a two year
old shipper coming from the east and he was in
(59:33):
really good position in the middle of the far turn
by himself, but just was flat. And Candy Kreiderman said later.
Speaker 1 (59:40):
That, you know, he just he was laid down in
his stall for like three weeks in a row and
it might have been one of those shipping deals.
Speaker 4 (59:47):
And he was growing, I mean, and then she saw
him at Aqueduct for the Wood Memorial and she said
it looked like a totally different horse. He was bigger, stronger, taller,
wider everything. So anyway, and boy didn't get it done.
Last year. Tom Weinzel won his third consecutive Gottstein last
year with minor league, and he's got a chance to
(01:00:09):
win four in a row, which is another pretty amazing number.
Speaker 1 (01:00:12):
Yeah, that horse is going to be very interesting. Candy's
Candy Cabiyo.
Speaker 4 (01:00:17):
Yeah, okay. Trivia. Last week's question named the only horse
in the Emerald Downs all time top ten earnings who
didn't race in the Long Acres mile and Andy Dockhorn.
Michael Tarlow got that answer. It's in the media guide
right there at Emerald Downs dot com. Mike Man's goal
(01:00:37):
is the answer. Twenty six wins at Emerald Downs. You
know he won several steaks. He won two steaks as
a two year old. He won another steak at three.
He won the mucle Shute Tribal Classic. He had four
stakes ones, but he never did run.
Speaker 1 (01:00:52):
In the long Acre's mind, I know if his whiz
does win that race on Sunday, he'll go right behind
Mike Man's goal and right in front of the great
fan on Ernie. Excuse me. All time earnings at Emerald
Downs very good.
Speaker 4 (01:01:03):
Okay, so good work Andy and Michael getting that question.
This week's question, the new distance of the Gottstein is
a mile seventy yards. The first twenty eight years at
Emerald Downs, the race was at a mile out of
sixteenth Who ran the fastest Gottstein in winning in those
(01:01:25):
first twenty eight seasons at Emerald Downs. Send your answers
to trivia at Emeraldowns dot com. Looking forward to a
great closing weekend for the twenty twenty four meeting and
vince a lot to observe right and talk about this weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:01:42):
Yeah yeah, you mentioned some good races Saturday and that
eleven race card on Sunday. We go out with a
flourish okay.
Speaker 4 (01:01:50):
Thanks to cy lebar Our, producer, director, and our guests
Alex Cruz and contribution from Dan Drew Kitsch as well.
