Speaker 1 (00:00):
Come in macOS.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
It doesn't matter if you love craps, blackjack machines or
dining on the finest Asian, American and Salish cuisines. It
doesn't matter what you do or where you're coming from Mucos.
What you do is all at Muckleshoe, an easy drive
from wherever you are. All roads lead to Muckleshoe.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Mucosuit fun monies. Let it from gate doors opening and
(00:52):
points for home.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Now from scratches chasing in my little lady, but fun
money has found another year and opens up by four
or five and going away. Fun Money absolutely runs away
with it clear by eight in the end.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
That was fun Money. What a win she had for
trainer justin Evans last weekend, Memorial Day weekend at Emerald Downs. Yeah,
that was one fast time for a fast Philly and
we've got we've seen a lot of good sprinters so
far this year. Vince Brun Joe with e Vince Brun
on horse Racing Northwest.
Speaker 5 (01:29):
Yeah, speaking of fun Money, that was off a twenty
six month layoff, Joe, and she went down in one
point eight nine. Wasn't even favorite in the race from
scratch who came in with nice credentials slight betting favorite
in that choice fun money. Those of you like buyer
speed figures, she got an eighty six, which is a
career high. She's made almost two hundred thousand down. As
(01:50):
we talked last week, she stakes placed twice in California,
had been running against horses like Ceiling Crusher Daddy's Ruby.
The only question was whether she could run that well
off the laugh well and she answered that needless to say.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Yeah, Justin Evans his horses running well. We're used to
seeing that here at Emerald Downs, as he is the
two time defending training champion, and of course plain Wright
to McKenna, Howie Gibson among others, off to great starts
at Emerald Downs this year. All right, Yeah, we got
stakes races coming up on June twenty second, that's three
(02:28):
weeks from this weekend. It'll be four stakes that day.
Three year old's, three year old, Phillies, older Phillies and
Mayors and the older males will all be in action
on Sunday, June twenty second at Emerald Downs. And Kevin
Krigger maintains the lead in the jockey standings.
Speaker 5 (02:48):
Vince, Yeah, Kevin sixteen wins and you know he's already
had five multiple win days or six make it now,
four doubles and two triples, just riding in great form,
just you know, even like a five thousand claiming race
on Sunday with Don't Tell Heidi in the last race.
What a polished ride that was, where he just had
the horse in a perfect stocking position out of the gate,
(03:10):
his hands didn't move until he got to the eighth
bril and she won with something left. I mean, just
you know, staying out of the horse's way and just
riding in his own.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
That's a scenario for Krigger often, isn't it. He stays
quiet as long as he can, you bet. And yeah,
he had a great run here last year, finished second
in the standings despite coming in later second in the
standings behind Alex Cruz, who is our five time defending
jockey champion. Alex had the huge Saturday a couple of
(03:42):
weeks ago. And you know he'll get his chances. They
all will. A really good jockey colony this year. That's
just one of the highlights. Okay, eight point zero field
size are better on a given race day at Emerald Downs.
So in twenty twenty four, which was last year we
(04:04):
had one day where we averaged eight horses per race
or better in twenty twenty three, one in twenty twenty two, one,
in twenty twenty one zero. Last weekend we had two
and Vince. We just known all along that it's going
to be a good year at Emerald Downs. Just we're
(04:25):
talking with our track president, Phil Ziegler. The handle was
really good last weekend crowds, but you know that field
size is a big part of business as well, and
it's looking really good for this year.
Speaker 5 (04:40):
Yeah, it's been outstanding. Saturday looks great. This Sunday is
a little bit down, but you know that's going to
happen in the course of a fifty one day meat.
I looked for us to bounce back, by the way,
even though it is the entry, the little light Sunday,
there are some great horses running on that card, like
a low a breeze, and so you want to come
out and see that the weather's going to be great too.
(05:01):
But yes, of course, you know, field size has been wonderful.
I've enjoyed handicapping the races, Joe. Seems like every day
we got a few new horses that are interesting with
good form that have been racing elsewhere and fit nicely
into the program here.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Yeah, the percentage of winning favorites is still pretty high,
but as you mentioned, the field size is gonna it's
going to even that out, I mean lowered a little bit.
We had ten favorites and twenty six races last week,
so it went down a little bit from I believe
around forty four percent.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Right.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
You know what though, like last Saturday, the pick five
came back fifty seven hundred, Yeah, and the biggest price
was an eight to one shot, and they were all
in double figures. But they all made sense on some levels,
So I mean you still it's it's hard to string
those I'm not saying it's easy, but there were no
knockout punches in that sequence, and that's what good racing
is about.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
For fifty seven hundred eight to one the highest payoff
that that is pretty rare. So good business at Emerald
Downs Racing. This Saturday and Sunday, first race one fifty pm,
and we're going to be going three days a week
after this weekend. Friday, June sixth, first race seven pm,
(06:13):
not too far off. It's a fab Friday and also
called half price Fridays. But if you do come in
on Friday, June sixth with your admission, you'll get a
T shirt and that T shirt's good for free admission
on all Fridays the rest of the season. Plus you
get a nice Emerald Downs T shirt as well. So
that's the kickoff. There just tons of promotions coming up.
(06:36):
It's Grandparents Weekend this weekend. Grandparents get in free and
we're going to have a grandparents race on the track
after the third And of course the first grandparents race
in twenty twenty three was pretty popular. You know, I
think you can use that it went viral. Steve Butler
(06:57):
of Mount Lake Terrace wanted after the first two leaders
just their grandparents' legs didn't hold up in that deep
Emerald Down surface. So we'll have some fun with the
grandparents and there's gonna be some prize drawings as well
for grandparents. So when you enter the track, tell them
your grandparent and you will get a certificate for prize
(07:22):
drawings both Saturday and Sunday. Those drawings will be after
race number four. All right, Yeah, pick threes are paying
well due to that twelve percent takeout and good field size,
competitive racing. Let's see the news and notes are updated
at emeraldowns dot com. Vince.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
They are up. Just went up today so this afternoon. Yeah,
a lot of information on there, all of last week's
fire speed figures, some sire stats. By the way, you know,
we had mentioned the cowbred's doing great, which they have been,
but the Washington Breads are coming around, Joe. This last
week I wrote down a list these winners of wad
(08:05):
Breads A Braje Mirage, Dynamic Deity, a nice win race,
a Ronia debut win wire Wire off the Bench, WRO
when Shady Harbor a debut went first, Endeavor, Congratulations Tony Lofton,
that horse had been knocking on the door for a
long time. Coastal Girl a nice win. And then we'll
talk more about Seline GT Nice Barkley Philly going forward.
But the Washington Breads are really coming around.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
That's good to hear, very good to hear. In fact,
good segue to lead into our guest, which is going
to be in our next segment. But Nina Hagen of
El Dorado Farm is going to be our guest. Ron
and Nina Hagen have operated El Dorado Farms in Enumclaw
for over forty years, and they stand Coastguard and Barkley.
(08:52):
They also, I think Nina told me that private gold
bred at least one mare. He's getting up there and
Raise the bluff is still there as well, but of
course most of the action goes through Barkley and Coastguard.
And yeah, Barkley had a really good day as a
sire last Monday here at Emerald Downs, so good for
(09:14):
Washington Bread's. Speaking of that, you mentioned Dynamic DDY, last
week's guest, Ron Schmid owner breeder. Hey, we timed that
out pretty good, Dynamic Deti's first start of the year. Gosh,
I picked her second, you know, Okay, gosh, it's a
gosh from a public handicapper. I picked her second, and
I didn't make a backup win better anything on her.
(09:38):
I had her in the pick three but didn't hit.
But boy, she was good for Ron Schmid and Frank
Lukerelli first out of her three year old year. Really
nice win in it all the way, won pretty easily
and John Loley had her on top at seven to one.
Speaker 5 (09:53):
Yeah, by dynamic impact out of a harbor of the
Golden Mare. Something about Iris, who Ron Schmidt owned exis
ample of the wagering here, Joe, this was she had
pretty good form as a two year old. A couple
of thirds in there, and including one against precise timing,
and yet in a nine horse field you got, you know,
sixteen eighty two dollars win mutual and a horse that
(10:13):
made some sense.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
Yea indeed, great win for the Dynamic d D people.
Last week at emerald Down's lots of stories from last weekend.
And yeah, we'll be talking to Nina Hagen. We'll have
our regular third segment. We'll do some back and forth
items Joe Withy and Vince Brune. I remembered my last
(10:37):
name there, Vince, how do you like that? We'll have
some selections. We'll have some sports shorts and trivia in
the last segment. But news and notes. What might be
a highlight from news and notes this weekend. By the way, everybody,
emeraldowns dot com. Go over to the right on the
top bar there and select news and Notes under what's
(11:02):
the banner heading? There is it? It's not under the
racing banner. It's under news and Notes.
Speaker 5 (11:09):
That's correct. Yeah, Well, one thing I'll throw out there.
You know, ten horses last week either set or tied
their career high buyer in their wins. So you know,
this track surface has been safe, it's been good. And
you know, we had John Linley on and he's you know,
and John's really in tune with you know, how speed
(11:30):
is doing and all that, and he's judged a fair
track and I would agree you can win on or
off the pace. And it's been really good racing. And
when horses are running, you know, up to their best capabilities,
that tells you you know, they're running over a good surface.
Speaker 4 (11:43):
Yep, some good comments this morning today is Thursday, the
twenty ninth, and it did sprinkle and we actually rained
for a little bit. But boy, I heard two comments
from trainers that bore that track's really good out there,
you know, just just enough moisture where it certainly wasn't
anywhere but fast, but it was a little damp and
(12:07):
very quiet all that. So yeah, good good comments there. Okay,
So news and notes are available with all the stats
you could think of for the Emerald Downs meeting, updated
through last weekends racing. We did do a training day,
so you can catch that on YouTube. Training day just
(12:30):
captures you know, ten to fifteen horses and get some
comments about them. Always a lot of young horses on there.
We've got a lot of two year olds as usual,
and they'll be coming out in due time usually what
vents mid to late June we start our two year
old races.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
Yeah, I think there is some offered in the new book. Okay,
condition book that came out, but that you know, what's
in the book doesn't obviously always guarantee what we'll be run.
But yeah, just looking at the worktab, I've seen a
lot of two year olds going so and we've heard
a lot of trainers you know, mentioned and owners that yeah,
we got a two year old we like this year,
and I love hearing it.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
Yeah, hearn more about the Barkley two year olds after
last weekend's events. Weekly honors for this past three day
weekend of racing at Emerald Downs Vince okay.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
As far as the jockey, you know, we could have
gone with Kevin Krieger again, but he did lead all
riders with seven wins. But we'd like to spread around
in Manny Americano. How's this for a week? Twenty six mounts,
five wins, five seconds, five thirds, fifteen in the money
finishes is really solid and Some people have asked when
Manny's apprenticeship is up, and I believe it's in August.
(13:41):
I'm not sure the exact date, but it will be
during our season. The lost Margarita's trainer. Boy, we could
have gone a bunch of different ways with this. For example,
Justin Evans won with his last four starters of the week.
Tim mccannah had another triple. Frank Lucarelli won three races
a Seed or Tomaile. One of our newcomers, he had
two wins. But this guy is We had him on
(14:03):
the podcast a couple of weeks ago. Howie Gibson, Boy,
what a job he's doing. Joe four wins last week,
including one with a layoff horse Wire Wire and then
two first time starters Shady Harbor and Race a Roni.
So and you think back earlier we had chuckingnutt Bay
with a huge effort off the bench. So how he's
doing a great job. He's up to seven wins at
(14:23):
the meet. So he's our trainer of the week. The
owner people you know Joe pretty well. Fred and Cindy
Decimone good racetrack people, been around a long time. Nobody
has more fun at the races than Fred decimone and
they're two for two with travel the Map this year.
Got another win the wa Bread of the Week celine, Gt. Joe,
(14:44):
You just mentioned her Ronan Nina Hagen, the Breeders by Barkley.
We talked more about that one later in the show.
And then the groom Roberto Prieto. I asked Justin Evans
for a groom. He didn't hesitate, he said, Roberto Prieto
is the guy. So that's our winners for the week.
Speaker 4 (15:02):
Very good, Okay, yeah, some very deserving winners, great action,
lots of winters spread out. But boy, Howie Gibson is
off to a superstart. And you know, admittedly a lot
of our horsemen didn't do great at the Turf Paradise meeting,
which was a tough meeting. But Howie Gibson really started
moving forward there last fall and continued it on to
(15:24):
this winter and spring. All right, So the racing Club,
the Emerald Racing Club is in action this weekend.
Speaker 5 (15:32):
Vince Pacific Zip Race one on Saturday, seven to two
on the morning line. This will be her second out.
There's a look like a competitive spot for her. We'll see.
We got Kevin Kraiger to ride. As we talked, Kevin's
kind of been a big ace around here, so we'll
see what happens. We had our other one, Bengo's heat.
(15:53):
She ran third last Sunday, and the owners are learning
about racing Joe because we got her claimed away. And yeah,
we've all had it happen to us. And I try
to tell people, Okay, you're allowed to be upset for
a few minutes and then you move on. It's all
perfectly legal and ensure kind of ensures that horses of
equal ability compete against each other, and it is what
(16:16):
it is, you know, if you want to be an owner.
You know, we had a bunch of claims again last week.
We're averaging almost six a day here at the meet.
It's all part of it.
Speaker 4 (16:24):
Yeah. I remember the first time or two Racing Club
horse got claimed. Everybody was kind of frowning at that
new trainer and owner, like why did you go on
ahead and do that? And but you know you're used
to it now and as you said, it's all legal. Yeah,
you're running to where they can win, do their best,
(16:44):
and so well.
Speaker 5 (16:46):
You know, you look at our like one of our
all time leading trainers, Frank Lucarelli, Tim McCann how many
horses they had claimed away Blaine Wrights, as I mentioned,
sixteen in the last two seasons. It's if you're going
to run horses in competitive spots and claiming races to
life is you're going to be reinvesting because someone's going
to take it. And then I kind of enjoy it.
(17:06):
You know. It's the old equine poker type thing, so
it's kind of fun.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
And the where are they now, which we do air
a little right around a half hour before the first
race every day. We've got a new one this week,
Sir looking Glass, who was in the racing club last year,
and Vince's part of it. It's a pretty good story.
One of your club members will tell the story with
Anna Dukes on the video. But it seems like she
(17:35):
is just a great owner for a horse to have,
any horse, and Sir looking Glass and her getting along famously,
you bet.
Speaker 5 (17:42):
And you know last year we mentioned her looking Glass,
he came out of a race with a bit of
a knee. He probably could have come back, but the
decision was made and Scott Tubbs, our trainer, thought too
best to retire, so we put out the word to
the club. We try to let them have the first
crack at it. But you need experience, you need money,
(18:03):
you need the property to do it. And Anna Duke's
met all the criteria and she sent us that video
and that you're right, Joe, the horse looks very happy.
Speaker 4 (18:11):
You bet okay? Well, a lot of happy horses coming
out of Enumclaw too, and good ones. And we'll talk
to Nina Hagen about that in our next segment. Take
a short time out here on horse racing Northwest.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
Mucos.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
It doesn't matter if you love craps, blackjack machines or
dining on the finest Asian, American and Salish cuisines. It
doesn't matter what you do or where you're coming from Mucos.
What you do is all at Muckleshoe, an easy drive
from wherever you are. All roads lead to Muckleshoe mucosuit.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
They round the turn and head for home and go
stride for stride. I'm a Margarita girl, final for along,
away on the outside, ranging to the front. Selene GT,
center of the racetrack. Recycle your heart, Bud, Selene GT
opening up late now Selene GT. Don't win it clear
by three.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Selene GT won the Monday feature of the Memorial Day
Feature race at Emerald Downs this past weekend, and it
was an impressive win. She is now three for three
in twenty twenty five and just super impressive. She is
a daughter of Barkley, bred by Ron Anita Hagen's El
(19:43):
Dorado Farms and Enumclaw and Vince's you know another Barkley
finished second, Beauty bark seems like a pretty good Philly
as well.
Speaker 5 (19:50):
And earlier on the card, horse called Red Leader almost
got his second win in eight days against Going South,
got run down really late, but another good effort by
that one too, by Barkley.
Speaker 4 (20:02):
Barkley is front and center at Emerald Downs, just as
he was as a race horse now as a sire,
and he stands at the Hagen's El Dorado Farms in
enam Claude. Joining us right now on horse Racing Northwest
is Nina Hagen. Nina, you've got to be smiling pretty
big this week, well pretty.
Speaker 6 (20:20):
Much ear to ear Churel a whole lot of people.
They're so happy with their Barkleys, and we can't say
enough good about him. He's the real thing, guys, He's
the real thing.
Speaker 4 (20:32):
He is. You know, he's buy Munnings and people knew
who he was when he came out as a two
year old because he had that round Charles Barkley body,
but he wasn't named after Charles Barkley, which is kind
of funny. But and then he had the big white
face too, and he just had a presence from day
one and undefeated two year old long acres mile winners
(20:54):
son of Munnings who's been just a tremendous sire and
Barkley as his second crop of two year olds this year.
But right now the three year olds are kind of
in the in the news because Seline gt is just
a star and Beauty bark First off the layoff, what
(21:14):
did you think of the Barkley babies when when they
were first fold at your place a couple of years ago, Nina,
when they first.
Speaker 6 (21:22):
Were folded, it was when we pull every fold, okay,
deliver every baby, and it's like opening up a Christmas package.
You don't know what you're going to get because you
see these white legs coming at you and then this
big white face and it's like everyone's so excited as
far as his demeanor and the way that he is
(21:44):
because he's so easy to be around. The baby are
the same way. They are so smart and tied and
willing to learn. Actually, actually I would say anxious to learn.
They just like what's next, What's next. It's just a
delight work with these guys welled, yeah and big.
Speaker 4 (22:04):
And big big. You know you sent us that thing.
We did a little story on Barkley off the track thoroughbred,
which he was a few years ago. Yeah, and you
sent us those five headshots of all with the big
white face. So he's stamping them pretty good. And you
know this Selene Gt. She is really built herself. So
(22:26):
I guess it's not a surprise to too many horsemen
who watched those horses in the walking ring, those Phillies
and said, wow, this Philly really is physical looking. And
she's proven it this year. She's three for three, So
Nina breeding season is over. How was Barkley's action here
in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 6 (22:48):
It was very very good, not to change, but Coast
guards the same way. A matter of fact, I'm breeding
another mayor right after we're done with this. OK, wait
for me. But yeah, he booked a very good book
of mares, and it's just so easy to handle him.
(23:09):
I just get so excited for these folks, especially when
a mayor's about to pull and you know you're going
to be doing another Christmas taxis what are you going
to get? He is a paint and he is registered paint,
so babies can be registered paint as long as their
marquees are within the qualifications. So he's got a ton
of future ahead of him with everything.
Speaker 4 (23:32):
You know, Barclay was a closing sprinter, but bring Vincent
here as well. He was a closing router as well.
And you know you don't get that great kick from
that many horses at a high level with those different
distances like that.
Speaker 5 (23:48):
Yeah, and he also had kind of a unique way
of rallying too, where he'd kind of just lower that
head at the eighth pole and just blast off for home.
He was really fun to watch, and you mentioned his
distinctive looks.
Speaker 4 (24:00):
Yeah. Ten out of twenty at Emerald Downs and he won.
I think he tied our record of winning a stake
for consecutive years. He just did a lot and now
he's siring good horses. It's not that surprising because Nina,
I know you follow breeding and Munnings has just been
such a good sire Barkley, those of the people. And
(24:23):
actually I'm part owner of a Barkley Juvenile Philly which
we're excited about. And Vicky Potter sits near me here
at Emerald Downs and she has one, and Howard has
another one with a partner. And I noticed Howie Gibson
was training two together last week. These are all Barkley
Juvenile Phillies. So and Coast Guard you mentioned him too.
(24:44):
What a consistent sire he's been for you. I think
you and Ron have owned more horses the last couple
few years than you ever did, at least your name
on ownership, because you know, Coastguard gets him to win
at two and three and just produces a ton of
winners too, doesn't he.
Speaker 6 (25:02):
Well take a look at Coastal Jazz Coastal Kid, you go, girl,
those guys are seven eight years old. So yes, he's
got very sound a long career courses. And the thing
too is that they're found and it's pretty much the
way that well I'll seek for ourselves that we've raised them,
(25:22):
that they've been balanced from this time of conception. Really,
and I got to give credit to LMFDE and Quality
Alfalfa we seed. You just can't beat it. And that's
all it is. I have so many people asking us
how do you get your yearlings looking like this? It's
just there's no magic. It's just quality seeds, consistent and
(25:44):
the handling and so forth. Everybody's it's a happy farm.
We're having fun, you guys.
Speaker 4 (25:50):
Oh boy. Coastal Jazz. Yeah, you just mentioned Coastal Jazz.
At age seven, he is currently the number two Washington
bred earner. Two wins from four starts and a second.
He's earned over sixty five thousand dollars. He's number two
among all Washington bred earners in twenty twenty five. So yeah,
(26:11):
going great guns is Coastal Jazz. Just so many Coastguard winners.
And you know Barclay's in the news of course because
he's a young sire and his horses made a splash
last year at two and now they're just up in
their games. So breeding seasons. So you're still breeding a mayor,
(26:33):
you said later today, but for the most part.
Speaker 6 (26:37):
We will be the last mayor.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
Okay, okay, well the better last. Well, you know Christmas
time in New Year's well, Personina's thinking about the Seahawks
at that time of the year a lot.
Speaker 6 (26:51):
But yeah, well that's another conversation.
Speaker 4 (26:55):
Yeah, but soon after, soon after, you know, you the
mayors are in full and they're going to be folding
in February, in March and so forth, and then the
studs get to work. So it's winters are really busy
for breeding farm like yours, are they not?
Speaker 6 (27:17):
It is, And we just had our last baby night
before last, thank you, and we are. We cut on
the numbers greatly this year, so we're twenty for twenty,
Thank you God.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
Thanks.
Speaker 6 (27:29):
Everyone survived and everything's doing fine. We used to and
I have no idea really how we did it, but
we used to do seventy to eighty year after year.
Holy moly, can you believe that?
Speaker 4 (27:38):
Well, yeah, you know, the washing bread numbers are down
a little bit, but you are. You are holding up
the state's end as a breeder, and your horses are
winning all over the place, you know. And Vince, we
need to congratulate Nina and Ron. They're going to be
inducted into the Washington Thoroughboro Hall of Fame in August,
(28:00):
and you know that's the big honor.
Speaker 5 (28:02):
Richly deserved. When you look at the list of runners
and Stallions and all that, and to this day, I
don't think we could do umble downs without them.
Speaker 6 (28:09):
No, you know, you got to give my guys and
the whole farm credit for that. This is a team effort,
the family effort. There's no way anyone can do any
of this by themselves. And we're all in on this together,
and we love what you do. We're passionate about it,
and we are positive and going forward and just looking
for a very very bright future.
Speaker 4 (28:30):
That is great. The optimism always comes out of Nina Hagen,
even though she is you know, you're not that much
past five foot tall, Nina, but boy, you've got enough
optimism for seven breeders. And you know you have no fear.
You've had some tough studs to deal with, like Free
(28:50):
at Last, I saw him. I know you have stories,
but boy, I have stars.
Speaker 6 (28:56):
I have scars.
Speaker 4 (28:58):
But they listened to you as well. They knew you
were around and you were boss, and it's just been
a great runs. It's hard to believe how many years
have gone by, but we're.
Speaker 6 (29:10):
Still still For all of these guys, especially the Stallions,
you show them respect, they will respect you back because
they absolutely know when they're being disrespected, So you know,
let's keep it fair for everybody.
Speaker 4 (29:23):
Well, you know, speaking right from Nina Hagen, we will
take those words to heart for sure. That's good with
the horses and humans right there. So anyway, you've got
action just about every weekend, the horses you breed and
the horses you race. It's probably hard to stay on
(29:44):
task on a race day at Emerald Downs or even
on the West Coast because Eldorado Farms horses are ever
present and off to a great start at Emerald Downs.
So coming up to the Wtboa Sale in August, the bull.
Speaker 6 (30:02):
Sairblings to these guys, I'm a Margarite, the girl sailing GT.
We we're so excited about this next yearling sale.
Speaker 4 (30:12):
I bet you are. You have some coastguards in there
as well.
Speaker 6 (30:17):
Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes yeah, and oh yeah yeah.
Speaker 4 (30:23):
That is great to hear. So the sale, you know,
I don't have that date right in front of me,
but I know it's after.
Speaker 6 (30:31):
Twenty six Okay, there we go, nine.
Speaker 5 (30:34):
Days after the mile.
Speaker 4 (30:35):
You're right, August twenty sixth, the Wtboa Sale.
Speaker 6 (30:40):
And we'll be doing our yearling preview also probably the
Monday before we haul in to the sale on that Friday,
so whatever that Monday is sure, that.
Speaker 4 (30:51):
Would probably be what the eighteenth or so something.
Speaker 6 (30:56):
Yeah, we'll send it, we'll find out. Invites to you
and I would really love to invite all the new
trainers that are up there in this area also to
let them see what we can grow, what we can produce.
Speaker 4 (31:07):
Well, we'll help get that word out for sure. Right
here on right of course, racing Northwest okay, always a
good show. And you know Barclays are the current one
in the news, but Coastguards right there and Washington Breeding
going well because.
Speaker 6 (31:23):
Of that, those are my boys, and you have.
Speaker 4 (31:27):
Your own mayors as well, So yes, you have to decide,
you and Ron on which ones you're going to sell
and which ones you're going to keep.
Speaker 6 (31:36):
And you know what, everything goes for sale, okay, and
everybody's X ray go and you know exactly what you're getting,
you know, just as much as we do. And the
only ones really that we do go racing with. If
our clients, you know, they buy them and they want
us to partner with them, we absolutely will. But the
ones that maybe don't bring the reserve we go racing with.
(31:58):
We race everything, but everything for sale. We never pick
en choes who's going to the sale.
Speaker 4 (32:02):
Okay, well that's good to know right there. Yeah, well, Nina, uh,
you've got a mayor to breed and ideas this afternoon.
So it's the gestation periods about eleven months. So this
the source will be born next April with all things
going well.
Speaker 6 (32:22):
And uh yeah with you.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
With you at the helm, good chance it will. But boy,
uh just just uh great news from last weekend for
El Dorado Farms with the different horses that they've.
Speaker 6 (32:35):
Won with on Sun weekend. Yeah, that was a good
weekend for El Dolado and we are so excited for
the future. Guys, everybody, you know what it's looking up.
Let's just keep going forward and stay positive.
Speaker 4 (32:47):
And you're you had some health issues the last five
years or so, but boy, you sure sound good and
you soundch I pretend.
Speaker 6 (32:54):
They never even happened though, to be honest with you.
Speaker 4 (32:56):
That's great.
Speaker 6 (32:57):
Somebody brings it up. Yeah, I don't. I don't even
say about it. No, I just go forward. I really
don't want anybody to even really know because I don't
want anybody thinking less of me.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
No way.
Speaker 6 (33:07):
I am on my game.
Speaker 4 (33:09):
All right. You sound like it and your horses are too. Nina,
thanks so much for joining us here on horse racing Northwest.
And we'll continue to get any news from your farm
out there when it's needed. You can keep me updated
on that as well.
Speaker 6 (33:25):
Great, Thank you both you and Vince. Thank you so
very much. I respect you and just love you.
Speaker 4 (33:30):
Thank you, Nina, Nina, God bless guys. Okay, you too,
Nina Hagen joining us on horse racing Northwest. Boy, uh,
lots and lots of enthusiasm from her. And you know
it's coming off a pretty good weekend, yeah, you know.
Speaker 5 (33:46):
And there was a Barkley Gray Barkley Philio was following
last year. And I don't know if you remember Ginger
and Charge and Arizona Bread out of a high bright Mare.
She won the stakes at the Southwest Fair, made twenty
two thousand last year. Then she finished fourth in the
Arizona Juvenile Philly, third in the gold Rush Futuria Rapaho.
(34:06):
She just had her first work of twenty twenty five,
but energy downs racing in Idaho today, So thirty nine
and one and Arizona Bred Barkley. Okay, Ginger in Charge,
Ginger in Charge, all right, very good, all right, Well,
thanks to Anita for joining us and again racing at
Emerald Downs one fifty on Saturday and Sunday. It's Grandparents weekend.
(34:31):
Grandparents Race is on Sunday, and boy, we've had a
couple of fun events on that.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
We'll do it again and again. Prize drawings for the
Grandparents both Saturday and Sunday after race number four. Lots
of promotions coming up and again next Friday, June sixth,
it's our first Fab Friday, Half Price Friday. Also next
week is the Belmont Stakes. Patricia McQueen is going to
(35:00):
join us and she is the author of Secretariat's Legacy,
a tremendous you could call it a coffee table book
with all kinds of pictures Secretariats legacy as a racehorse
and a sire and a sire of sires. Patricia is
well respected in the industry and she's going to be
(35:21):
here at Emerald Downs on Saturday, June seventh, Belmont Steak Saturday.
That's pretty app day to do something related to Secretariat.
She'll be with us on the podcast next week as
well as Anthony big Ace to Bill, who has a
tremendous run as a Belmont Steak sandicapper to say the least,
So we'll take a time out and come back with
(35:42):
our third and final segment here on horse Racing Northwest.
Speaker 2 (35:50):
It doesn't matter if you love craps, blackjack machines or
dining on the finest Asian, American and Salis cuisines. It
doesn't matter what you do or where you're coming from.
What you do is all at Muckleshoe, an easy drive
from wherever you are, all roads lead to Muckleshoe Mucoson.
Speaker 4 (36:19):
Horse Racing Northwest continues our final segment. And again, this
is our last two day race week at Emerald Downs,
and with the field size, we're just expecting so much
good stuff. We've already seen a lot through nine days
of racing. So fab Friday again starts in a week.
June sixth, seven pm on Friday nights is first post
(36:43):
sports shorts. The Belmont Stakes not far away. I guess
I could have waited until next week, but Chick Anderson
had that iconic call of Secretariat winning the Belmont, the
first Triple Crown winner in twenty five years, just seemed
like it was never going to happen again. And Chick
Anderson captured the moment in such tremendous fashion. It's so memorable.
(37:09):
Secretariat's performance led the way Chick Anderson was calling. But
there were other people that called that, and this might
have come up before. But Dave Johnson was the track
announcer at Belmont, so he called the race for the crowd.
He had certain restrictions because of the CBS, but he
(37:30):
also was going to Saratoga radio station. That must have
been a deal where Belmont Park races the audio went
right into Saratoga. So Dave Johnson called the race live
from Belmont, and Harvey Pack did a radio recreation that
afternoon in the New York and New Jersey, the tri
(37:54):
state area there. Harvey Pack legendary and racing. He wasn't
known for his race call spent boy. Anybody wanted to
get more and more of Secretariat that day and then
since then, fifty two years later and Ray Height Ray
Height also called it live on network radio. Haight Ray
(38:16):
Height called the race as well. So Jack Anderson is
certainly a top that list because of prominent CBS network television.
But others called the race in nineteen seventy three.
Speaker 5 (38:31):
Well, and Chick just nailed it. It was the drama
of the moment and hard for people now to realize
what Secretariat just transcended into mainstream culture. He's on the
cover of Sports Illustrated, He's on the cover of Time,
He's on the cover of Newsweek. You couldn't pick up
a newspaper, watch a news report without hearing about Big Red.
(38:51):
So even I, you know, who didn't know a whole
lot about racing, I was more baseball and football as
a twelve or thirteen year old, I of course watched
with my family and what a great early memory of racing.
And just once or twice a year, I don't want
to overdo it. I put it on just and still
brings goosebumps. His call just matches the what was happening,
and you can see the crowd cheering as he's coming
(39:13):
down the stretch, and you know, everyone talks about moving
like a tremendous machine, which was great, but just the
inflection of his voice when he said, but Secretariat is
all alone, it just really captured it.
Speaker 4 (39:25):
And then the phrase he is moving like a tremendous machine.
As every stride it was locomotion. Yeah, I think every
quarter was faster than the previous.
Speaker 5 (39:36):
Yep, unbelievable.
Speaker 6 (39:38):
It was.
Speaker 4 (39:39):
It was tremendous. Actually, you know, we got a pretty
good story on YouTube, Emerald Downs. We did it at
one of our Christmas parties and several people were there
that we talked to. There was probably six or eight
sound bites there. Type in Emerald Down Secretariat and you'll
get that. But there's my sports short Vince.
Speaker 5 (40:01):
Okay, Well, with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the news,
I thought we'd go into our Sonic trivia a little bit.
Do you remember the Seattle Sonics took first with their
first round pick in nineteen eighty seven.
Speaker 4 (40:17):
Nineteen eighty seven, Yeah, oh, they had They had so
much talent that year. That was the year. That was
one of the years I think they had. Well, Dereck
McKee and Nate McMillan were playing. Then, was Ricky Pearson
Eddy Johnson on the team that early. I don't know,
but I don't think they weren't drafted. Johnson and Pierce,
(40:38):
of course weren't drafted by the Sonics, but Nate McMillan
and Dereck McKee were. But Nate had been there a
couple of years. No, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (40:45):
This was kind of a trick question. It was Scottie Pippen.
Oh shoot, yeah, the Sonics took him fifth overall. They
kind of did it as a favor of the Chicago
Bulls because then they immediately traded him the Bulls for
the eighth pick overall in the draft, plus Old and
Pauline East plus future considerations. So the Seattle Sonics actually
had Scottie Pippen for you know, a couple hours there,
(41:07):
maybe an hour or so in nineteen eighty seven, but
there was never any intent to keep him because the
Bulls were trading out. The Bulls really wanted Pippin' bad.
So the Sonics you know, got you know, good asset
management trying to get more out of it. They got
Old Polonies who was a serviceable center, and the eighth
overall pick. I forget who they drafted, maybe that was
McKee that year, Derreck McKee anyhow, and then future considerations.
(41:30):
But Scotty Pippen was a Sonic.
Speaker 4 (41:32):
That's a good memory there, you know. And Scottie Pippen
in time since he's retired, I think he just gets
more respect every year.
Speaker 5 (41:42):
You know.
Speaker 4 (41:42):
He was he played ninety four feet like Michael Jordan. Yeah,
you did not want to see him around you if
you had the ball or you were on offense, because
he he could do it. And then look at all
he took good shots, he could dunk, he could run.
Oh he was great.
Speaker 5 (41:58):
He got lost a lot in the Michael Jordan understand,
you know, playing aside the greatest player probably of all time.
But Scottie Pippen was one whale of a ball player,
you know, and he came from a small school, so
it was a little.
Speaker 4 (42:11):
Bit under the ring state. Yeah, yeah, so it.
Speaker 5 (42:14):
Was interesting time. Of course, the Sonics were just on
the cusp of getting good again too in the late eighties.
Speaker 4 (42:21):
Yeah, they well I think they had Chambers and Dale
Ellis that year too, didn't they or X or did
they come right after that?
Speaker 5 (42:28):
Yeah, they had X. I mean they were scoring a
lot of points when they had Zavier McDaniel, Tom Chambers
and Dale Ellis in the lineup. They were giving up
a lot of points too, but they took the Lakers
to the Western Conference finals there out of nowhere in
eighty seven.
Speaker 4 (42:42):
All right, good memories on the Sonics selections. You know,
I think we I'm trying to remember I don't think
I made selections. Oh we let Ron Schmid make a
selection on his horse last week. I don't think I
made any I should usually I write them down. But
this week we've got Saturday racing, and let's go to
(43:06):
that seven.
Speaker 5 (43:08):
Yes, right now, we're going to bring that one up
for a couple of weeks and go ahead.
Speaker 4 (43:12):
It's a five and a half furlong Philly and Mayor sprint. Yep,
Ourlilah Grace. I got to go with her. She's seven
for twenty one. She was in that attracted win back
on May tenth. She broke a little slow and lost
some ground at the start. Wasn't never involved in the race,
(43:33):
but boy, she gets a nice win here every year.
Of course. She won the Legislator's Stakes in twenty twenty
twenty three at fourteen to one, beating Blazing Bella Blue
and Tizamacho Girl, who was good that year, very good.
And last year she had a nice win as well.
Got a good record in short sprints, two for four
(43:55):
speed in there. So I'm gonna go hurry. She's got
to be one of the two morning line choices, isn't she.
Union coach comes in for receiv.
Speaker 5 (44:03):
Yeah, it was impossible to make a morning. I finally
settled on after a lot of deliberation on Crystal Proof,
who's going to be tested class wise, but had a
big run over the track. And do you know that
that Chrome's best copy didn't run that great out of there.
But that race has produced three next out winners. I
believed Crystal Proof and the horse won earlier in the
(44:23):
meat at earlyer in the year at Santa Nita, and
has really turned to a kind of a hard hitting
mayor for Ruby Thomas, whose horses have all performed well
here so far at the meat. But that race could
go any of a number ways. I think are a
lot of races. Five to one, she could go lower.
There's no knocks on any of the horses in the race.
Even Zip and sevens sure drawn on the outside makes
(44:44):
a bit of sense.
Speaker 4 (44:45):
You know.
Speaker 5 (44:45):
Five thirteen out of twenty four in the money in
emeral Downs has earned one hundred and forty grand. It's
a good field, tough field.
Speaker 4 (44:52):
I will say Zip and seven has not won a
sprint since twenty.
Speaker 5 (44:59):
Twenty one, is that right? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (45:01):
But she has had some good sprints and we know
she beat Blazing Bella Blue there in the Emerald Distaff
a couple of years ago and had some good races
over this track many times, so just hasn't had a
ton of sprints.
Speaker 5 (45:18):
Look at a horse like Union Coach coming out of
that attracted race. You know you got to kind of
excuse her a little bit. That was an awful tough
spot to make her Emerald Down's debut. You go back
previous race and she's winning in fast time down in
Phoenix and then was eight out of nine in the
money last year, made almost fifty thousand dollars. Sonoma Dreaming
another one from the sid ter. Tomayo Barne is fast
(45:40):
and won twice last year, made thirty thousand dollars. Tough race,
very very tough race. Would you make Carlila Grace? I
think five? And that could go either way there. So
it was a real struggle that race. But that's good
and it's every horse in that race has some credential.
Speaker 4 (46:01):
On Sunday, we've got a good three year old allowance
with He's not talking coming off a second place finished.
To see that Tiger also coming out of that race
are to smoke and tisses. Harbor tissues Harbor was running
here for the first time off of Santa Anita win
and he's not talking. Was two and a quarter lengths
(46:21):
ahead of him. So those are the main contenders there.
You're not going to get a big price.
Speaker 5 (46:25):
And vivacious tribute to stakes winner here last year? Is
it in there?
Speaker 4 (46:28):
He's fast? Yeah. And then the fourth race, Aloha Breeze
makes her twenty twenty five Emerald Downs debut. She has
been Emerald Down's top two year old of twenty twenty
three No. Twenty twenty two, emeral Down's top three year
old Philly of twenty twenty three, and Emerald Top Philly
(46:52):
or Mayor of twenty twenty four. Yeah, three straight years
and she had a nice winter down in Phoenix as well.
Speaker 5 (46:58):
Yeah she is, she is. She's the one you all
start around when you talk about older Phillies and Mayor's here.
Speaker 3 (47:04):
Now.
Speaker 5 (47:04):
We talked about fun money earlier today, and you know
these two could be on a collision course for the
Hastings Stakes here attracted and attracted who couldn't have been
any more impressive. So that Hastings on our first stakes
day is shaping up really really well.
Speaker 3 (47:20):
It is.
Speaker 5 (47:21):
And you mentioned Loha Breeze. You know, she won't be
any big price, but she's fun to watch because she is.
She's one of those horses. To watch her take that turn,
it's really something.
Speaker 4 (47:31):
Yeah. She's seven for ten at Emerald Downs and she
is tied with Sluiced His Whiz as the leading active
stakes winner five stakes wins.
Speaker 5 (47:40):
At this track.
Speaker 4 (47:41):
The fifth race, I was on that fly by John
you know, a couple of weeks ago at twenty four
to one. I picked him on the podcast. He did
run third, but it was a distant third behind Red Leader.
And he is in a maiden ten again for Ryland Harwood.
It's race number five. It's a six horse field, so
(48:04):
not a big price from him. Carlos Montalvo back. I
don't know if he can run much better than he
did on me eighteenth, so he is a very lukewarm
pick there. Lucky Sniper had a little trouble at the
start in that race, so I'm still deciding there on
who to pick. So would I give out? I give
(48:25):
out Arlila Grace at five to one. That's my pick
for this week. Okay, we did our sports shorts, it's
time for trivia. Last trivia was a name as many
four consecutive Washington Divisional champions so you won a championship
either you know any of them top sprinter, top filure
(48:48):
mayor we've had three fairly recently. Nus of Beach was two, three,
four and five year old Washington Divisional champion of course
horse of the Year at ages four. Absolutely Cool won
four divisional championships as sprinter or older horse and then
striker PhD the two time mile winner. He won three
(49:13):
consecutive horse of the Year titles and was a top
older horse the year that he ran second in the mile.
So there were three of them, and of course Heloha
Breeze is a little different category. She's won Emerald Downs
top honors of the meeting and she's a Kentucky bread
So yeah, you know, I didn't get any answers on
(49:33):
that one, and this one is pretty easy to look up,
but it's a different angle. Who was Claimer of the
Meet and top sprinter at Emerald Downs the same year
he was named Claimer of the Meet and top sprinter,
(49:54):
So that you know, the top sprinter usually goes to
a horse that's won a stak or two, right, Vince,
usually a claiming horse, but this happened at Emerald Downs.
Send your answers to trivia at emeraldowns dot com. So
you're pretty much done with the morning line then probably
for the weekend.
Speaker 5 (50:11):
We are, yeah, going good. Only two to do this week,
but next week got to get tied on. We've got
three of them, so beginning with Friday night, be fun
to get the Friday's going. We got the you know,
we got the taste of the good weather now and
saw the mount and mountain its full glory last weekend.
And I'll tell you when it's seventy five and clear here, Joe,
(50:32):
there's not like there are not many racetracks that can
have a better environment.
Speaker 4 (50:37):
Yeah, So just a couple other tidbits here. Mike Poowich,
this is more than a tidbit. Mike's going through some
serious health issues. Of course, he's been training in Washington
since nineteen eighty four from a racing family. Mike does
need a liver transplant, and he's good and Mike Pegram
(51:01):
had him flown out from the Midwest where he was
training to Arizona and the Mayo Clinic there and he
has undergone some tests and things and it's pretty much
down to he needs a liver transplant, So there's a
GoFundMe page for Mike Poowitch, who is a friend to
so many, real generous guy throughout his whole life and
(51:23):
has made a lot of friends all around the country
in thoroughbred racing, and Mike is going to have a
lot of expenses there, so there is a GoFundMe page
for Mike and are certainly our best wishes to him.
Lonesome Boy is arriving this Saturday from Pennsylvania. He just
ran on Tuesday, ran third in a tough race, so
(51:45):
he is the defending Washington horse of the year. He's
coming in Saturday, probably right after the races are over.
He's going to arrive in the Emerald Downs Barn area. Anyway,
that's pretty much it for this week. We'd like to
keep talking, but you don't have that much more. Thanks
for listening though, and we'll see you next week and
(52:06):
hopefully at the Racing song Horse Racing Northwest
