Speaker 1 (00:00):
In much US.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
It doesn't matter if you love craps, blackjack machines, or
dining on the finest Asian, American and Salish cuisines. It
doesn't matter what you do or where you're coming from
mucous What you do is all at Muckleshoe, an easy
drive from wherever you are. All roads lead to Muckleshoe.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Mucosuit are.

Speaker 4 (00:49):
They round the turn and head for home and Colonel
Ludlow squares off with a thousand miles at the end
Signe Kendy Cobio not far out of it. See that
tiger gaining on the outside two hundred yards away out front.
Colonel Ludlow's opening up once again, but fighting back is
one thousand miles from the inside. It's a driving finish

(01:09):
in the Gottstein. Colonel Ludlow has won it.

Speaker 5 (01:13):
That was the Gottstein Futurity. From closing day at Emerald Downs,
Colonel Ludlow takes our big two year old event and
he is in action today at Zia Park in New Mexico.
Colonel Ludlow in the one hundred thousand dollars Zia Park Juvenile.
He's going to be saddled by Bart hone and ridden

(01:36):
by e Gonzalez. Colonel Ludlow, our top two year old
from twenty twenty four. Joe with you and Vince brun
here on horse racing Northwest on a Tuesday of Thanksgiving
Week and Vince welcome. We've got quite a few things
to talk about. And Blaine Wright is in action at
Zea Park today.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Blaine, Yeah, since we've finished here at Downs in September,
everyone knows Clovis connection. He's on a roll with a
couple of really strong, powerful wins down in California. You know,
he's just getting better and better, and I really hope
we see him again here next year. He'd be a
handful in the mile. And yeah, as you mentioned, Zea

(02:17):
Park their big day down in New Mexico. Today, we'll
talk about dates for twenty twenty five and we've got
a stake schedule out and yeah, before you know it,
we'll be looking at twenty twenty five, which will be
our thirtieth.

Speaker 5 (02:32):
Season, thirtieth season at Emerald Downs. And when the calendar turns, yeah,
see a Park in action. Now. You'll probably be hearing
this podcast, possibly for the first time Tuesday afternoon and
a lot of the action will be underway at Zea Park,
but Turf Paradise before we get to Emerald Downs. And
that is the big news on today's podcast. The twenty

(02:56):
twenty five race dates, the twenty twenty five stakes schedule,
the twenty twenty five promotion schedule. But how about Emerald
Downs presence at Turf Paradise at this meeting.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
You know, if you watch it almost every day, and
those of you out there, they go Monday through Thursday
this time of year. You know, he seems like every
race show we got two or three horses that ran
up here at Emerald Downs. And you know we talked
last time about the jockey colony and the trainers down
there justin Evans are two time defending champ off to
a really good start down there. Yeah, it's a significant presence.

Speaker 5 (03:31):
Yeah. So again, Emerald Downs is open for full card
simulcasting seven days a week and Monday Tuesday Turf Paradise runs.
If you follow Emerald Downs, which so many of you do,
you're going to see all kinds of local horses, trainers,
jockey's owners in action down there. And again Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,

(03:51):
Thursday is the Turf Paradise schedule, and there are just
a whole bunch of track openings coming up as well
real soon. Turf Way Park in Kentucky opens on December fourth,
and they are full of full fields and I think
they're in early week. Well they might not run on
Monday or Tuesday, but they're kind of a Wednesday through

(04:12):
Saturday track. Los Alamados is going to have their short
meet starting December sixth. The Oaklawn Park meeting starts on
December sixth, Friday. As well. Pleasanton is going to take
a break from December fifteenth to December twenty sixth. They'll
be starting the day after Christmas again like Santa Anita

(04:32):
December twenty sixth. Then Sam Houston Sunland Park start right
after the calendar year. And of course Tampa and Fairgrounds
are underway now, so you know summer is the big
time for racing. But boy, there's a lot going on
right now. And let's get to Emerald Downs for twenty
twenty five. Thence some good news a little bit earlier

(04:53):
than normal, but no problem there. We've got our calendar
set for twenty twenty five right.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Opening day will Sunday this year, April twenty seventh. That's
about a week earlier than last year, and we will
open on a Sunday. That'll be the only day of
racing that week, and we will go through Sunday September seventh,
so we will have a fifty one day meet racing
mainly Friday, Saturday, Sunday once the Fridays begin in June.

(05:24):
The steaks schedule a bit different this year, Joe, It's
pretty much the same schedule. The calendar is kind of different.
We're gonna do four days of stakes races, so we
have on June twenty second, four stakes races. On July twentieth,
sixth stakes races. August sixteenth, that will also be excuse me,

(05:45):
August seventeenth. That will also be Mile Day with six
stakes races, and then closing day with four stakes races,
so twenty stakes races in four days. That's kind of interesting.
The Mile, I said, is on August seventeenth, So on
August seventeenth and also on July twentieth, we will have
stakes in every division two year old, two year old phillies,

(06:07):
three year old, three year old phillies, and older phillies
and mayors and older horses, so a little bit different.

Speaker 5 (06:13):
Two days of six steaks at Emerald Downs this year,
so those are going to be huge days. Yeah. You know,
Phil is disgusted with the Jack Hodge and of course
the HBPA and the WTBA and they're on board. So
we're trying a little something different. You know. We've done
the Big Championship Sunday for the mile and got a

(06:35):
lot of attention on the national scope of things with
our pick four, pick five whatever multi race wagers, so
let's give it a shot. The first Steak Day, as
you mentioned, is Sunday, June twenty second, and just about
a month apart. They're spaced Mile Day Sunday August seventeenth

(06:57):
this year for the Long Acres Mile and the Washington
Cup is going to be adjusted as well. We're going
to have open races for those form rides.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
Yeah, So on closing day September seventh, the Muckle Chute
Tribal Classic for older horses and the Mucleshoe Tribal Distaff
for olders and fillies and marriage those are now open races.
Before those were restricted to Washington Breads and BC bread
or sired horses. Those are open races and we are
going to have on August second Washington Showcase, right, so

(07:35):
we hope to have some state bred races for horses
on those on that weekend.

Speaker 5 (07:41):
Yeah, those will be in the condition book Washington bread
Races on Sunday, August third, as I'll turn that phone
off there as we're doing a podcast. We're doing Horse
Racing Northwest, our first one since the day before the
Breeders Cup. Thanks for joining us on horse Racing Northwest.
We'll have another one in December before Christmas. But yeah,

(08:03):
So some news on the calendar for Emerald Downs for
twenty twenty five opening day, The Sunday before the Kentucky
Derby Sunday, April twenty seventh will be opening Day, and
then the next live day will be Kentucky Derby Day, Saturday,
May third, So we'll go Saturday Sunday in the month

(08:23):
of May, except for Memorial Day. We'll be running on
Memorial Day Monday this year, which is May twenty sixth,
and then we go to our first Friday. Our first
fab Friday with the T shirt giveaway is Friday night,
June sixth, first Ray seven pm on Friday nights, and
then our pretty typical Friday Saturday Sunday schedule we do have.

(08:47):
We're going to do a mid season break this year too.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
We are right after July third, which with the Fireworks Spectacular,
we will not race again, to believe, it's till July eleventh,
so everyone will get a little break there. And a
couple of tweaks. Post time now on weekends is one
fifty pm, a slight change there twenty minutes later, and
one other note. A couple other notes on the stake schedule.

(09:12):
The twirold program is going to start a little later.
We'll still have the same amount of steaks sixth, but
the NNGC and the King County Express those are pushed
back two weeks to July twentieth to give the twer
rolds a little more time to be prepared. And then
also on Mile weekend, the Saturday on Mile Eve will
be our big quarter horse day this year with the

(09:34):
AQHA Racing Championship Challenge and the John Deere Juvenile Challenge.
So add that up with Sunday, we'll have eight stakes
events over that weekend.

Speaker 5 (09:43):
Yeah indeed, Okay, So it's a fifty one day meet
this year, starting on Sunday, April twenty seventh at Emerald
Downs and ending on September seventh, so looking forward to
horses coming back getting ready and generally that's right around

(10:04):
March first, might be a week earlier this year because
of we're starting a week earlier, so that'll be figured
out soon enough. Joe with e Vince Brune here on
horse racing Northwest. Blaine Wright's going to join us. As
I mentioned, he has got some horses in he's saddling
horses for owner Peter Retakop, who, of course Blaine saddled

(10:25):
another twist of fate to win the twenty twenty long
Acres mile and in that race he beat a horse
by the name of five Star General who five star general.
Little news on him, it looks like they might. I
think they found a permanent home in Virginia with a
breeder located there who has a lot of mares and

(10:49):
Kennel had a owner of five star General is working
out the details there, so we'll keep you a prize
to that. Last I talked to Kenny that was that
was being worked out. So that sounds great to get
five star general in a stead career after his tremendous
racing career. Two long acres miles to end it and

(11:13):
five participations in the mile so as I digress, but
Blaine Wright saddling for a couple of really tough Hastings
horses boy in the Zea Derby. He's got August Rain
who won the BC Derby and Avana who was six
for six up at Hastings this year. She won the

(11:34):
BC Oaks. She's in the Zea Park Oaks today. So
we'll be talking to Blaine about that other things coming up.
Christmas is not too far away, as we well know.
If you'd like to get a Christmas party at Emerald Downs,
you can call our Group Events two five three, two
eight eight seventy seven hundred. That's two eight eight seventy

(11:56):
seven hundred Group Events. Vicky and Emily running that department,
and we have just a fantastic place for a Christmas party.
You can watch horse races, we have mock racing where
your group can get into some a little bit of
TV betting on previous races for fun. And just look

(12:18):
at all the different floors here. Those of you are
familiar with our building, we have our of course, our
own food service and our own audio visual service and
parking right next to the building for free. So Emerald
Downs always has been excuse me, an outstanding place for
a group event, a business meeting, a Christmas party, most
notably in the next several weeks. Okay, the promotion schedules

(12:43):
out as well, and ESPN two with their Ocho Day
has embraced a lot of off the wall and under
the radar sports you might call it sports and quotes,
and of course they've really liked our Corgi races and
they've replayed that many times after the original showing Well,

(13:04):
the Corgies are going to be on ESPN two again
this year, and so is t Rex Day. T Rex
Day will be on ESPN two. So a couple of
very popular promotions and you know, let's face it, Vince,
those promotions at Emerald Downs have really worked. Phil Ziegler,
our president and marketing background, we had we were up

(13:28):
well over ten percent in attendance this year, and which
is a great thing. People at the track, interest in
the promotions, interest in the races, possibility of making new fans,
and just we're looking forward to more of the same
next year.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
You and I have been to a lot of tracks
around the country and we say it often, we'll take
the atmosphere at Emerald Downs and stack that up against
just about anybody nationwide. Possible exceptions maybe Keenland and Saratoga
and those are just niche meets. But yeah, we get
the fans here and that pumps up everybody, including the

(14:02):
employees and certainly the participants and everybody who's here.

Speaker 5 (14:08):
Yeah, promotion schedule out. Go to Emeraldowns dot com for
more information, and you can also check us out on Facebook.
We keep great progress on the promotions there on our
Facebook site as well, and Vince Vince's press releases are
contained at emeraldowns dot com as well as all of

(14:30):
the year end stats, which is a little bit in
the rearview mirror now, but we'll be referring to those
a bit. Okay, Well, we're going to take a time
out and come back with trainer Blaine Wright, who won
that mile in twenty twenty, had a really tough loss
this year with Clovis Connection to five Star General. But
as Vince mentioned, Clovis Connection has come back with a

(14:51):
vengeance with a couple of wins in California and Blaine
is in the state of New Mexico. Today, we'll be
right back on horse racing Northwest.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
Muchos It doesn't matter if you love craps, blackjack machines
or dining on the finest Asian, American and Salis cuisines.
It doesn't matter what you do or where you're coming from.

Speaker 3 (15:15):
Mucos.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
What you do is all at Muckleshoe, an easy drive
from wherever you are, All roads lead to Muckleshoe.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
Mucosuit horse Racing Northwest continues and one of Emerald Down's
top horsemen is in action all year long and today
in the state of New Mexico. If you're listening, it
is Tuesday, November twenty sixth and Xia Park with a

(15:48):
big steaks day at their track in New Mexico, and
trainer Blaine Wright is going to be busy saddling three
horses down there for owner Peter Retakop. Blaine. Welcome to
horse Racing Northwest once again.

Speaker 6 (16:03):
I appreciate you guys having me on again.

Speaker 5 (16:05):
Yeah, you bet, Blaine staying busy twelve months a year.
You've got a pretty strong routine now for well well
over ten years of California and maybe a little bit
of New Mexico. Alert Bay did pretty well down there,
I remember a few years back. So you've been to
that track before.

Speaker 6 (16:25):
Yeah, we won the derby here and it was either
fourteen or fifteen, I can't quite remember. He still holds
the track record here. I didn't know that until I
got back the other day. And nice and we also
win the sprint championship for the boys and the girls.
I think that was nineteen or twenty with a couple
of Emerald Down's Nose, Alaford Bay and any port in

(16:46):
a storm.

Speaker 5 (16:47):
Fantastic, So familiarity there. What do you like about the place?

Speaker 6 (16:53):
Well, I mean anytime you get a chance to train
a good horse. And minister Rettikop, you know, he put
this on it on the map for Alert Bay back
when he was a three year old because it was
one of the last chances to run against straight threes.
And obviously, you know he did pretty well. So we
came back a couple of years later, and now this year,

(17:13):
you know, he's got a couple other three rolls, as
you know, and and a nice older horse that is
making his first start off a big layoff.

Speaker 5 (17:22):
Blaine Wright had another fine season at Emerald Downs. Blaine.
You had steaks horses and virtually all of the divisions
winning juvenile Steak and of course the runner up in
the mile was heartbreaking with Clovis Connection getting beat right
at the wire. He got beat by an awful good

(17:44):
race horse who you're so familiar with, Grant Forrester, a
good friend of yours and you worked with him for
him back in the early two thousands, and he sends
five star general right to your barn. So but Connection,
Vince has talked about him already on the podcast. Blaine
and Vince go over with Clovis. Connection's done well since

(18:06):
we last saw him here running that great race in
the mile. He won a couple six furlong races in California,
the Harris Farms at Fresno and the Oakland at Pleasanton
to run his record now to eleven for seventeen lifetime.
Both of those I mentioned were at six, So a
very versatile horse.

Speaker 1 (18:24):
Bayne. Has he done for the year or have you
got any plans for him? Remember?

Speaker 6 (18:28):
Actually, you know we're pointing him towards the Don Valprito
at Santa Anita. That's cowbred steak going six. That'll probably
finish the year out. We were going to be done
after that race, but he pulled up super and they
had we didn't, you know, we just don't want to
get in a spot where we're running him too much.

(18:48):
And so the timing for that race is like a
good seven weeks from our last race, and it'll probably
be it for him. You know, we're certainly going to
be looking at at our spring options again. And then also,
you know, I got to take another run at the mile.
He just he ran too good to not give a

(19:10):
shot if he's in good form next year. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (19:13):
It's his only loss at Emerald Downs after taking a
couple of stakes as a three year old here and
what a race that was on mile day, just showing
that two turn speed and losing in the last jump
to five star general who is You know, he's going
to go down in Washington history being a Kentucky bread

(19:35):
one of the greats. And Emerald Downs ere with five
consecutive in the money runs in the mile. I still,
you know, that race was still something else. Guys.

Speaker 1 (19:45):
You know, and.

Speaker 5 (19:46):
Blaine, you've been on the short end of a couple
of few miles, but you do have one, and let's
face it, your horses have run great on the big day.

Speaker 6 (19:56):
Yeah, I mean, you know you kind of have to
take that with a grain of salt. But we've been
beat by some nice horses. And uh, and you know,
as disappointing as it was, certainly happy for our local connections.
And that is one hell of a horse, like you say,
and and uh he went out on a winning note.
And you got to love that for racing, no matter

(20:18):
what type of horse you have. And when you can
plan a retirement and know that your last one and
you get a w you really have to be happy
for people.

Speaker 5 (20:28):
Yep. Indeed, and Blaine Is and Grant have hosted post
mile get togethers at the bar in the last couple
of years. Vince, and boy, Blaine's pretty gracious over there
in defeat, a'll say that he has a good time.
And I think you did say at one point, Blaine, boy,
nobody asks to see close connection. They all want to

(20:49):
see the winner. Yeah, and that we all laughed at
that because he is a great horse.

Speaker 1 (20:54):
Well, well, what you know, the one nice thing about it?
What could what could they have done different? William Linton, George,
you wrote a great race, Elvis connection ran a great race,
did everywhere. Sometimes you just get beat and there's nothing
to do about it.

Speaker 6 (21:05):
Yeah, I mean, we know he has distance, limitations. I've
always thought that the mile is a is a long sprint.
And if you go back and you kind of look
at the history of the race at Emerald Down, Steed
wins a lot, and you know, we ended up down
in the one hole, broke a little bit tardy. But
I thought Billy wrote him real good to the first turn,

(21:27):
and I believe that, you know, Grant's horse wasn't laying
as close as it as they wanted to be, so
they had to adapt as well. And you know, you
take a horse like him and a Hall of Fame
rider and you get beat by him, I mean you
just as disappointed as it is. You got to take
a deep breath and say, hey, my horse showed up
and give it as all.

Speaker 5 (21:46):
Yeah, And Blaine has been on the big end boy
the last ten years at Emerald Downs. He is way
out in front in stakes wins and again participating in
almost every division.

Speaker 1 (21:58):
He did win the mile with another twist of fate,
which kind of leads into today because you'll note all
three horses Blaine running today start with it. Hey, Avanna
august rein a belief in this living, which usually means
Peter Redicott, right, Blaine.

Speaker 6 (22:12):
Yeah, he likes to name him with Ace so he
doesn't have to go through the worktab very far.

Speaker 5 (22:17):
Okay, there's an angle right there. We see you did
scratch Arctic Breeze Emerald Downstakes winner top three year old
Philly up here and on a nice little winning streak.
She gonna make it back.

Speaker 6 (22:33):
Yeah, Unfortunately for her. You know, we flew all the
horses out Friday, and she's running a temperature and her
blood's a little bit off and she's not right to
run today, so we took her out and she'll definitely
be coming back to Emerald Downs next year, so at
some point we'll be giving her a break and look

(22:54):
forward to another season with her up there.

Speaker 5 (22:56):
Boy, that's great to hear. She is a really fine
three year old Philly. She I see. She's one on synthetic,
she's one on wet track. She is one of course
on dry dirt as well, and again a three race
winning streak right now for Arctic Breece. She won't be
in the Zia Park Oaks today, but you are going
to saddle another pretty darn good Philly of Vanna for

(23:20):
Peter Retakop, who was six for six up at Hastings,
and boy, she looks like she makes a significant move
in her races, including winning the BC Oaks. You know,
what do you what do you see about her? You've
probably been around her for a few days.

Speaker 6 (23:37):
Huh, yeah, we've We've had her in August drain down
on Pleasanton for about just over five weeks. And they're
just like Barb. Barb told me, she said, Evanna is
very nonchalant about training and very very docile, quiet, kind
of a quiet Philly doesn't draw a lot of attention
to herself, and and she's been that way the entire time.

(24:00):
You know, we got to get the horses over the
track the last two days and and you know, as
far as I can tell, everything's in good shape. I mean,
you know, you I don't know what kind of horses
she was running up against there, but I know she's
had to buck the trend a little bit with slower
paces and she gets far back sometimes. But you know,
looking at the race, I think the one horse scratched

(24:22):
who had a lot of speed, and you know, I
don't know how much how many horses in the race
have a lot of gas outside that ten horse, which
concerns me a little bit, but Amadeo actually flew to
California and got on my you know, a bunch of
my horses this last week, worked probably four or five
on Friday, five or six on Saturday, and then a

(24:46):
bunch of horses on Sunday before we flew out this week.
So he worked both Havana and August Rain and he
tells me they feel every bit as good as they
have been and when they're at home, so that gives me,
you know, good feeling.

Speaker 1 (25:01):
Looking at the I think it's a Zea Park sprint today, Blaine.
You got a horse called a Belief in this living
coming off quite a bit of a layoff for about
fifteen months and going up against a really nice horse
named Jackson Traveler. How's this guy been doing well?

Speaker 6 (25:16):
You know that horse was This horse is actually supposed
to come to Emerald Downs last year for the season,
but he got a lung infection on me late May,
maybe before he was ready to run, and we were
just we actually had the Oakland Handicap picked out to
run him at Golden Gate and then we were bringing
him up and he was sick one morning and then

(25:40):
two or three days later we ultra sounded his lungs
and he had a big abscess in there, so he
got all the carry needed. Luckily he came through it
with flying colors, and now.

Speaker 5 (25:50):
We're ready to run.

Speaker 6 (25:51):
He could be more of a rouehorse on the you know,
on the on the bottom end, after we get a
couple starts into him. But really I took that horse
over after the Low Salamito's Derby, and he was at
Emerald Downs for probably, oh, I don't know, maybe five
or six weeks. Not last year, the year before when
he was a three year old, and I had Prince

(26:14):
Abu Dhabi and Clovis, so it was pretty neat. We
win the Emerald Derby, we win the John Rupert Derby,
and he won the Canadian Derby, you know, all within
two days. So I had a pretty good weekend that weekend.

Speaker 5 (26:29):
Okay, did you went up there to saddle him? Did you?

Speaker 6 (26:32):
I sent him to barb Okay, And then that's kind
of been the joy of having some horses with Peter. Yeah,
just it's easier just to send him on to the
next person. But he did. If you look back at
his work tab, his work tab led all the way
up until about ten days before the Canadian Derby at
Emerald Downs.

Speaker 5 (26:50):
So, uh, you got him ready to go? Yeah the distance, yeah,
off the layoffs.

Speaker 6 (26:55):
So yeah, so if things go right, you know, hopefully
he'll come to Emerald Us this year as well, because
they have a pretty nice horse named Apprehend up at
Hastings and you know, obviously he's trying to keep his
horses separated as much as he can.

Speaker 5 (27:09):
Yeah, Arctic breethe said you had her down in California
and boy she had a great year. And Barb Heads
is who Blaine's referring to, the Peter Reddicopp trainer up
at Hastings and in Canada. So okay, well, Ivana stretch
Runner came through time after time as a huge favorite

(27:31):
up at Hastings this year again six for six with
five stakes wins. You know, can't beat that as far
as a three year old Philly season at a track.
So we're going to look at the Zia Park Derby
and August Rain is a Peter Reddicop runner that has
spent his whole career in Canada. Tell us about August

(27:53):
you know.

Speaker 1 (27:53):
What's interesting about him? I'm sorry, he's a BC bread Joe.
They didn't pay a lot of well, Peter Axle bred
the horse, but he looks plain like he's kind of
been an overachiever.

Speaker 6 (28:04):
Yeah, I mean he's a he's a ladder framed horse.
He's got, you know, real high energy. He's a horse
that you know, he's busy all the time. And I
worked all you know, these two, him and Havana, they
work together every single time down in Pleasanton, so you know,
and certainly he held his own against her. I don't

(28:26):
know which horse is better, but obviously his form's pretty
impeccable for for himself. And you know that sire Sun
Sun Gold, I think it is He's He's held him
pretty high regard. And you know, right now these horses
have shipped good. So I just pray that we can.
You know that I don't ruin their form too bad for.

Speaker 5 (28:44):
Barb Yeah, Amadale Perez riding August Rain as well, and
Amadaloe twenty seven percent for the year, which is the
Hastings Meet pretty much. Of course, he won the twenty
thirteen long acres mile aboard Herbie d That was a
heck of a horse a few years back for trainer

(29:07):
Robbie Gilker. But August Rain, yeah, by Sun Gold a
good two year old, but even better this year. He's
won four of his last five and those have all
been steaks.

Speaker 1 (29:18):
Yeah, he Blaine's got the two really really accomplished horses
running in three hundred thousand dollars races today. And also Blaine,
of course, your big presence at Pleasanton. They've gone about
a month now. How is that meat gone for you?
And how are things looking in Northern California?

Speaker 6 (29:37):
Well, I mean, the horses are there. Unfortunately, we've got
the Strong Company trying to shut us down every time
we turned the corner. They're asking Sea CHRB to take
their dates away, take our dates away from us, and
they want to be the only game in town. And
you know that's very unfortunate. I'll tell you the horsemen

(29:58):
have stuck together. There's approximately a thousand horses on the grounds.
If you look at our handle the last two to
three weeks. Other than that first week where we had,
you know, a blip with everything and we couldn't get
no simulcasting, the handles picked up just about it every day.
So you know, we're bound and determined to keep Northern
California going, and you know, hopefully the Commission keeps backing us,

(30:23):
and you know, a guy sure hates to see another
circuit go away because I think that we'll have terrible
impact on Emerald bounds, just because the amount of horses
we all see coming out of California coming to the Northwest.
And it will also kill the fair circuit too, because

(30:44):
you know it, just it, it'll be horrible for everyone,
including the breeders. Sixty percent of cowbred's running northern California.
So you guys can imagine if if they shut down
that track, you know where all the Mayor's gonna go.
Where it's gonna Unfortunately, it's gonna end up looking bleak

(31:07):
like our full crop does in Washington. Now, when you
only have one place to go and you're racing, you know,
minimal days every year, there's not a lot of centive
to breed a horse, and I'm afraid that'll eventually catch
up to him in California.

Speaker 5 (31:21):
That's an important figure that what was it, sixty how
much percent.

Speaker 6 (31:24):
Of of cowbirds running the.

Speaker 1 (31:27):
North Okay believe well, you know, Blaine, I listened to
those the chr B meetings online and it kind of
seems that they really are put in northern California under
a microscope right now, and sometimes they don't seem to
hold southern California maybe to the same standards. At least
that's the impression I get.

Speaker 6 (31:47):
Well, that's certainly impression we get in the north. I mean,
we got a group called the TOC the Thoroughbred Owners
of California that you know, the guys that are running
that are Southern cow guys, and they want nothing more
than to just have one circuit down south, and they've
really made it hard on northern cal tou to keep open.

(32:10):
This latest one is and I'm sure you guys have
read the articles that they said they'd give us, you know,
one extra one day at Santa Anita devoted to the
cheaper horses, and pay for Pleasanton to stay open as
a training facility, and pay for our vanning and all
that stuff. And you know, this is the way I
look at that. If that was the case, why did
they ever close Golden Gate? Yeah, you know, they could

(32:33):
have used that for a training center. So I believe
if something like that goes through, we'll probably get four
or five months and then they're going to say, ah,
this isn't working out for us. You know what, We're
just going to close it down and there's there's probably
five hundred people looking to relocate, whether it's in state
or out of state.

Speaker 5 (32:53):
Well, yeah, we're certainly rooting for Northern col and Pleasanton.
So the schedule there, I believe you're going to take
just a short break from December fifteenth and then open
up the day after Christmas December twenty sixth, as is
a traditional opening day for Santa Nita, and then what's
the schedule then after the first of the year.

Speaker 6 (33:14):
It pretty much mirrors what Golden Gates has to be
all the way to the middle of June. You know,
they could end sooner, they could end later. There's talk
out there that a couple of affairs want to change
their dates. We've been granted dates for twenty twenty five,
but we have to the next seats our be meaning

(33:35):
we have to apply for our license for the meet.
So that's a big meeting, and well let us get that.

Speaker 5 (33:44):
Yeah, I don't know what we'll do well with a
thousand horses and the handle going up. Now that you've
got the exposure that you deserve, a need, you know,
there's some optimism there for sure. So good luck to
Pleasanton and Northern California racing. Blaine is certainly an advocate
for that. That's a big part of your year. Are

(34:05):
you going to have any presence at Turf Paradise this year?

Speaker 6 (34:09):
Well, I've sent probably five or six for Lucarelli. You know,
him and I are great friends, and I lived with
him in North Caltill he moved out of there, and
you know, most of the time, if I have presence there,
I usually send him my business. If for some reason
we don't get dates, you know, I don't even know
if there's stalls to be obtained there, would I would

(34:32):
imagine most of my cheaper horses would probably relocate to there,
the better horses and my local clients' horses, you know,
we'd probably just freshen them up and come into him
down the first of March.

Speaker 5 (34:47):
Very good, and you did have a good two year
old there in the Gottstein. You ran a couple of
horses in the Gotstein. See that Tiger was a close
fourth as the favorite over that wet track. Uh, you know,
he certainly showed some ability. How's he doing, Yeah, he's
doing good.

Speaker 6 (35:04):
He's turned out at Todd and Sean Hanson's place in Tonino,
he's a he's a stud colt and he's a bit rambunctious,
so he's a little bit a little bit too much
for my wife to take care about at Griffin Place,
so we chipped him down there. They've got some stud
paddocks that he's doing well. Plus my main foreman, Salvador Medorio,

(35:28):
he works for those guys during the winter, so he's
keeping a close eye on him. But he'll go. He'll
go into training the first of February at Danaida at
Dphro's new place and start gearing up for next year.
But got a little unfortunate for a horse like him.
He you know, he win that stake and he's not
a Washington bread so it was a long seven or

(35:51):
eight weeks getting to that route race and he kind
of broke tardy and didn't get the position we were looking
for on a speed favoring racetrack and had to use
them up a little bit too early. But I really
confident that that horse can route and y'all look forward
to seeing if he can regain his form this next year.

Speaker 1 (36:11):
Blaine, I know you're a big Seahawks fan, and we
were watching the pleasant and feed while the Seahawks were
beating the forty nine ers down there a couple of
weeks ago, and you won a race and I think
it was I can't remember who pointed out that you
had on a Kansas City Chiefs jersey, where normally, yeah,
on a Seahawk.

Speaker 6 (36:28):
There's a good story behind that. So the Seahawks, I
usually Cam Chancellor has been one of my favorite players
since he came to the Hawks, and so I'm like,
oh for eight when I wear his jersey. And so
last year, being that we have a big rivalry with
the Niner fans, when they were in the Super Bowl,
I thought, you know what, I'm gonna pick up these

(36:50):
guys a bit. So I went out and boughted Mahomes
jersey and they won, and then they beat him again
this year. So everybody was expecting me to show up
in a Seahawks jersey, but that my whole Homes jersey's
been pretty lucky for me. And they fell about themselves.
Oh here we go. He's rooting for Mahomes now he's
not even rooting for Seahawks. But it got our hawks home.

(37:13):
So that's the most important.

Speaker 5 (37:14):
Thing, that's right. Okay, there was a definite method to
that and that's a good story all right. Well, Blaine
Wright Down busy in New Mexico today with a couple
three hundred thousand dollars stakes races and more. Blaine, best
of luck. I always enjoy talking to you, and you

(37:34):
did mention sending some horses to Frank Lucerelli. He relates
that you are the top graduate of the Frank Lucerelli
School of horse clocking.

Speaker 6 (37:45):
Well, he helped me back a couple of times. He said,
I wasn't ready to move on.

Speaker 5 (37:52):
And if you want to know more about that, go
to YouTube type and Emerald Downs Frank Lucerelli in his
Hall of Fame video. Blaine relates a good story there.
So Blaine, good luck today man, and happy holidays as well.

Speaker 6 (38:08):
Appreciate you guys, Take care.

Speaker 1 (38:10):
Thanks Blaine, Thanks Blaine.

Speaker 5 (38:11):
Blaine right at Zia Park. Thanks Blain at today and boys.
Some great action there, yeah, with terp Paradise going. You know,
Finger Lakes is a constant this time of year and
there's just good simulcasting. And again, Emerald Down's open seven
days finger Lakes.

Speaker 1 (38:28):
I think tomorrow is the big closing day. Okay, yeah,
they check it out they opened back in April, so
it's been a pretty good run for them. But you
mentioned all the other tracks that will be opening. Kind
of encouraging to hear. Fleaslton has that many horses, Yeah,
that are on the grounds that is.

Speaker 5 (38:44):
Yeah, I've been taking a look at their races on
the weekends. And the Big A Anthony Stabill finishing up
tomorrow then his first season as track announcer Finger Lakes
are good, buddy, the Big A. Happy Holidays to all,
which I didn't do off the top of the show.
Thanksgiving coming up this Thursday, and Christmas season around the corner. Okay, well,

(39:07):
we're going to take a break and we'll come back
with our third and final segment. We're going to talk
about Washington Bred horses for twenty twenty four and do
our usual sports shorts and trivia as well. And we
did mention Colonel Ludlow at the top of the show,
who was in did beat see that tiger and everybody

(39:30):
else in the Gottstein futurity He is in the one
hundred thousand dollars Zea Park juvenile today.

Speaker 1 (39:36):
Is first one thousand miles, one thousand miles. Yeah, one
down at Phoenix.

Speaker 5 (39:41):
Last year she did, didn't she? So Scottstein ran seconds
as a Philly Justin Evans ran one two that day.
All right, we'll take a time out, be right back here.
On horse Racing Northwest.

Speaker 2 (39:57):
It doesn't matter if you love crabs, black cha machines
or dining on the finest Asian, American and Salis cuisines.
It doesn't matter what you do or where you're coming from.
What you do is all at Muckleshoe, an easy drive
from wherever you are, all roads lead to Muckleshoe.

Speaker 3 (40:21):
Mucosuit.

Speaker 5 (40:26):
Horse Racing Northwest continues with our third and final segment.
Thanks to trainer Blaine Wright for joining us, and you'll
be interested if you catch this podcast later to check
out the results of his horses in stakes action at
Zia Park today. Blaine just become quite an important horseman

(40:46):
on the West coast. You know Washington for sure, and
then northern California. Presence in Arizona. In you know New Mexico.
You're associated with Peter Redikopf and all his fine clients
from Washington.

Speaker 1 (41:00):
Well, as you heard, he's all in in the industry
and wants it to succeed here and in northern California,
and you know in East stated there's we need northern
California in the northwest, and they need it in California.
So I don't understand the hardball being played for some
short term game maybe, but you'll win the battle lose

(41:20):
the war. Is what's going to happen if they are
successful in knocking out northern California. Anyhow, we can get
on our soapbox and go on. But you know, I
agree with Blaine on that. It's just it's.

Speaker 5 (41:31):
All the cowbreads that run in northern Yeah, I mean,
how many of those small breeders are going to go away?

Speaker 1 (41:37):
They're not right and and people are not proven, they're
not going to relocate to Southern California. That's that's like
two different states in California, Northern California and Southern California.
That's all they have in common is the name of
the state. It's just it's you know, four hundred and
fifty five hundred miles. It's it's the climate's different, the

(41:57):
living's different, it's just different. So but they all are
California breeders, and that's the important distinction. So we need
a healthy, envibrant northern California. We are very fortunate that
you mentioned Joe. Turf Paradise for our horseman is extremely
important and so is northern California.

Speaker 5 (42:18):
Yeah, okay, Well, leading Washington bread earner and he has
been since I think January because he won that nice
allowance at Aqueduct in January followed it up with a
stakes win at Parks. His name is Lonesome Boy, a
three year old son of Nationhood, and ran a good
second in a route allowance at Parks just last week.

(42:40):
He's up to one hundred and sixty five thousand in earnings,
well ahead of Huge Big Lee, the seven year old
still in training racing in Kentucky, who's at one hundred
and eighteen thousand. So Lonesome Boy has got a big
chance of becoming the top Washington bred earner for twenty
twenty four. Just had a he had a little chip

(43:04):
that was taken out. He had several weeks off, maybe
a couple months off, came back and has run some
good races. Hasn't won since the comeback, but has been
in top company. Of course, he ran in the Pennsylvania Derby,
so Huge big Ley's number two.

Speaker 1 (43:18):
Speaking Emerald Downs Horses. The horse that ran here in
twenty twenty three broke broke her maiden and then subsequently
won her into l later in the meat Tennessee Moon.

Speaker 5 (43:30):
Oh boy, she is tied for first.

Speaker 1 (43:34):
Excuse me, she is first now in wins in twenty
twenty four in the nation. She's eleven for sixteen this
year one hundred and sixty one thousand. She even won
routing at a rap A Hole Park going a mile
and sixteenth, then did run in the claiming Crown. The
Claiming Crown finished a respectable fourth.

Speaker 5 (43:51):
She really did. She's kind of mostly a need the lead, but.

Speaker 1 (43:55):
Yeah, and she got topped and she hung in there
down the lane and got a good check for that.
So boys, she come a long way. Kentucky bred by Ransom,
the Moon began her career in Delmar. The horse she's
ahead of is a firal guilding named Spike Zone who
if you follow Delaware Park Parks Laurel those tracks. That

(44:16):
horse is ten for thirteen this year for three hundred
and thirty four thousand. Horse was claimed for forty and
twenty twenty two and it has just become absolute wind
machine on the East Coast, mainly at six and six
and a half furlongs.

Speaker 5 (44:31):
Yeah, Tennessee Moon, I know she won her Emerald Downs
debut by thirteen lenks, right, yeah, in twenty twenty three,
and then didn't she win toward the end of the meeting?

Speaker 1 (44:42):
Did she was claimed a couple times? Then where her
non winners of two lifetime by five and a half
lengths under Alex Cruse on twenty six to August twenty
three went down to Delta Downs with Justin Evans won
her debut down there for Justin got claimed was in
the hands of Mark Hibden.

Speaker 5 (45:02):
Now no Mark Hibden. Yeah, that guy still has has
her right.

Speaker 1 (45:05):
That's correct.

Speaker 5 (45:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (45:06):
So they've done really good leading.

Speaker 5 (45:08):
The nation and winds Tennessee Moon. Wow, and really that
was an outstanding forth in the claiming crown. She you
know most of her wins were in sprints, I mean
what ninety percent of them?

Speaker 1 (45:19):
Yep.

Speaker 5 (45:20):
And here's a route against those Claiming crown races are
like Breeders' cup races for claiming horses. They come from
all over and they're just super solid races. And yeah,
that's a good story right there. That's a good one, Vince.

Speaker 1 (45:33):
Tennessee. She buy she's by Ransom the Moon and some
of the most smart strike Mayor called Tennessee Whiskey Bread
by Calium at Farm. So she was cut out to
be decent. You know. It was running and Maden Specials
and doing okay down in southern California before she joined
Justin's string up here in twenty twenty three.

Speaker 5 (45:52):
Okay, Well back to some Washington Bread's Precise Timing, of course,
did something that no other horse and Emerald Down's history
has done, winning first three career starts all steaks races.
Precise Timing was three for three at the meet for
Kay Cooper and the Debbie Pap Syndicate owners. She won

(46:15):
them all, all steaks and she is third in Washington
Bread earnings at ninety one thousand, So can't do much
better than she did. Good speed and she had to
show a little grit there and a couple of those
races and she did. And yeah, going down the list,
just a lot of horses still racing at ter Paradise.

(46:36):
We had that race yesterday with Asina Zazen and Young
Life Lore. We're all in the same Filly or Mayor race.

Speaker 1 (46:44):
Asina wanted a pretty good price.

Speaker 5 (46:46):
Asina won it and she was in the top five
in Washington Bread earnings.

Speaker 1 (46:51):
I believe last year she had a big win down
at the Oakland Park. I remember that's right.

Speaker 5 (46:55):
Yeah, so she is, I believe by Coastguard.

Speaker 1 (47:02):
I think, yeah. Well, anyway, I know Valerie lund is
the trainer. Yeah, has been.

Speaker 5 (47:07):
So yeah again, just huge Washington Bred presents down in Phoenix,
I mean really strong presence. So you'll get a lot
of horses that you watched in wager on if you
check out the ter Paradise Meet. So for honors Washington
Bread honors, which are decided at the bank while they

(47:28):
are awarded at the banquet in February the Wtboa Banquet.
Two year Old's Big Bowie had a really good winter
and spring down in Phoenix, and he did run well
at Emerald I think he was he stakes place three times.

Speaker 1 (47:45):
Yep, that is correct, and he ran he ran well.
You know, he just didn't maybe do as well as
he did down in Phoenix. But he certainly has had
a big year because he did win his stakes down
there too.

Speaker 5 (47:58):
He's not talking Bonnie. Jenny's horse went a nice steak
here at Emerald downs by Brodie's cause by Vacious it
was a vivacious spirit. Blaine had that fast two year
old that won the first juvenile Steak Angel vivacious by
our short term memory, Joe, Well, yeah, two year olds,

(48:18):
let's see vivacious tribute.

Speaker 1 (48:21):
Okay, Okay, we're both wrong.

Speaker 5 (48:22):
Yeah, I remember the horse. Yeah, he's not talking. Unfortunately,
had to be scratched out of the Gottstein late. He
had a problem at the starting gate. Bonnie, I know,
was disappointed about that. She was convinced he can be
a two turn horse. So by Brodie's cause. Anyway, there's
some contenders among the two year old two year old Phillies.

(48:42):
Precise Timing is really the decided top horse there, undefeated
with all steaks, three year old colts and Gelding's Lonesome
Boy by far the leading winner. Not only did he
win those two races I mentioned, but he ran fourth
out of eleven or twelve in the Wood Memorial, and
he was in it all the way until the really
the last one hundred yards or so.

Speaker 1 (49:03):
Yeah, he's a tryer. He ran, He ran really good,
and they had a little set back Midsummer and seems
to have bounced back.

Speaker 5 (49:10):
And then Dynamic Secret won Art Muckle Shoot Derby here
he was our top three year old Bonnie Jenny Trainey
Chai looks like she's got a little edge in the
race for top three year old Philly. She won the
Muckle Shute, She won the Washington Cup Philly and Mayor
Steak on closing day against older horses. Yeah, and was

(49:31):
also close second Arctic Breeze, And I believe the kent.

Speaker 1 (49:35):
That is correct now. It was Arctic Breeze was fourteen
to one that day and came rolling up the rail?
Was it under Carlo Lopez, who, by the way, is
off to a great start in Phoenix. I think he
already has ten wins down there, defending, defending, writing champ and.

Speaker 5 (49:50):
Okay, Phillies and Mayors, that one's pretty open, you know.
Blazing Bella Blue has been the consistent champion three straight
years three year old Philly older filly in Mayor. She
only ran once this year and it was a Steake's victory,
so she's her hat is in the ring. Seen of course,
coming off a nice win at Phoenix, the older filling

(50:12):
Mayor division not super strong. Hannah has a head. He
had a really good year so far. But and creme
dement Hannah has a heady with I believe Charles Essex
Crime Dement Frank Lukerelli. They both have have had really
good years, but not really in the steakes division and
then in the older horses conclust his Whiz be top

(50:33):
older horse again this year.

Speaker 1 (50:35):
Yeah, thinks certainly possible. It is. He didn't do anything wrong.

Speaker 5 (50:38):
He only had one win, but it was a steak win.

Speaker 1 (50:41):
Yeah, and he was right there in the mile the mile,
he finished a good third and those those three were
quite a bit ahead of everyone else.

Speaker 5 (50:49):
I just saw the mile the other day again, and
you know, he was really moving at the end of
that race, and against two really good horses not in
the photo, but another outstanding race for Slews. Tiz Whiz,
who is two time defending Washington Horse of the Year
and definitely planning on coming back next year, according to

(51:12):
trainer Tom Windle, who is part owner along with the
Brewers and the Griffins Naval Escort, of course, won the
Muckle Shoot Tribal Classic for his second win. He had
a kind of a little forced layoff during the meet,
but he had a good year for the Oakcrest Farm
trainer David Martinez, so there's a few contenders for top

(51:32):
Washington Bred honors. You mentioned Carlo Lopez and Manuel Americano
continues to ride well. I mean his last what five
to six days at Emerald Downs were fantastic this year.

Speaker 1 (51:45):
Won four on closing day. I think he had at
least one win on the final six cards. Then he
went down to Fresno won the meet there. Right now,
he's riding Monday through Thursday at Turf Paradise and Friday
through Sunday at Pleasanton, which if you're a young apprentice
and in demand, hey take advantage of that weight break
and those horsemen want that weight off and you're kind

(52:06):
of the hot guy. And he's doing great.

Speaker 5 (52:08):
He is really doing great, you know because boy, for
you know, eighty some percent of the Emerald Downs meeting.
You know he's there. You know, I had a win
here or there, sprinkled around, but really caught on and
the horses are running for him. And as you said,
trainers really like to use a hot apprentice with the

(52:29):
weight off, So good luck to him as well. And
you did mention Justin Evans had a really big week
last week at Turned Paradise to move out in front
in the standings there already.

Speaker 1 (52:41):
It looks like him and Rovertino Diadoro are going to
be the two guys vying for the title. They both
have big barns and seem to have horses at every
level and seemed to replenish the troops, and that'll be
be quite a battle, I think, you know, And we
mentioned Carlo Lopez is doing great, Alex Cruz is starting

(53:03):
to pick it up again after a bit of a
slow start. Orlando Mohica riding a lot for Diodoro, so
he'll certainly be a factor.

Speaker 5 (53:11):
Yeah, you mentioned Cruz just last week. You go, well,
you know, Alex, Yeah, a little still start, but keep
your eye on him here. And then I looked up
at the results. He won two races in a row
that day.

Speaker 1 (53:21):
Well, you know, he just he wants it, so he
rides hard. Yeah, I mean he may not be the
most stylish guy on a horse, you know, because he's
kind of big and lanky for a jockey, but boy
does he You know, if you're going to be a
leading rider, you've got to be one of those guys
who tries hard every race and rides all kinds of
horses and all that. And he does that, and you know,
as a fan and a horseman, you love that because

(53:42):
you've got full confidence that the guy's going to be
out there giving it is all for you.

Speaker 5 (53:46):
Boy, he certainly does all of that. Five consecutive titles,
unprecedented in Washington State. Five straight titles at Emerald Downs.
We know him well. Okay, there is some Washington talk
on horses, and we're going to head into our final

(54:07):
segments here and we start with sports shorts. What do
you got for this week, Vince?

Speaker 1 (54:13):
Well, I was looking at some old baseball numbers, as
I want to do every now and then, and I
came across one that I had remembered from way back
in fifty nine. Do you remember a guy named Roy Face.

Speaker 5 (54:24):
Joe eighteen and one one year?

Speaker 1 (54:26):
That's right, that was what I was going to mention.
In nineteen fifty nine, he only pitched ninety one innings
all in relief in fifty seven games, and he went
eighteen and one, unreal. And also I believe had ten
saves and he was five eight one fifty five, so
I don't think kidding. Yeah, he was an overpowering type
of pitcher. But boy, you talk about he was one

(54:48):
O four and ninety five lifetime, but every I mean,
that had to be one of those years where just
everything went right. You know, you give up a run
and they come back and score two for you and
you get a win. You know what I'm saying. It's
just that that pretty awesome stat for a reliever to
get eighteen wins.

Speaker 5 (55:04):
That was fifty nine, nineteen fifty nine.

Speaker 1 (55:06):
With the Pirates.

Speaker 5 (55:06):
They won the World Series the next year.

Speaker 1 (55:08):
That's right on Mas's walk off.

Speaker 5 (55:11):
Another relief pitchers record I remember well, and it might
have been sixty three when the Dodgers swept the Yankees
in the World Series. Not that I'm a huge Yankee fan,
but I just don't root for the Dodgers. So let's
just say that Ron Paranowski had a sixteen and three
season in relief for the Dodgers there in the early sixties.

Speaker 1 (55:32):
Yeah, and he later on became the Dodgers pitching coach
Federalsora for many years. And they used to say he
was Jonathan Winners dope, okay? Or is it they looked
just like him? Right? So yeah, but yeah, Ron Peranowski
had a long and very good career.

Speaker 5 (55:47):
Yeah he did all right. Well, my sports short is
the Seahawks and twenty ten were the first team to
win their division with a losing record, as you were, remember.

Speaker 1 (56:01):
I do remember seven and nine and then they had
the They upset the defending Super Bowl champs in the
playoffs under the Marshawn Lynch boom quake run or whatever
it was beastquake beast quake and uh uh so Kobe
Bryant did a little uh yeah tribute tribute to that
the other day, and they win over the Cardinals. But yeah,

(56:22):
they were seven and nine and uh.

Speaker 5 (56:24):
The first team to win a division as David Whitehurst
replaced Matt Hasselbeck for uh several games there. Yeah, in fact,
they beat the they beat the ram Rams for.

Speaker 1 (56:38):
To win the division in the last game, and as
we mentioned, they upset the.

Speaker 5 (56:43):
The Saints, defending champs.

Speaker 1 (56:45):
And now, now, how did the Seahawks end up getting
to be the home team in that game because they
won the division? I guess, and the Saints were a wow,
that's right. I don't know if they've changed that rule
since then, but that was. Yeah, that was kind of
a bad deal for the Then the Seahawks I think
they lost the next week in Chicago exactly.

Speaker 5 (57:04):
Yeah, I'm looking right at it here. They lost to
the Bears thirty five, twenty four.

Speaker 1 (57:08):
That was Pete Carroll's first year and they had turned
over like seventy five percent of the roster, so that
was actually a all things considered, a pretty successful season.

Speaker 5 (57:18):
What happened to Marshawn Lynch in that game against the
Bears after they beat the Saints because their leading rusher
in the game was Golden Tate with thirteen yards rushing.

Speaker 1 (57:28):
We'll have to look that up.

Speaker 5 (57:29):
Yeah, Lynch had one hundred and thirty one yards against
the Saints and the memorable run, so.

Speaker 1 (57:35):
It was quite a run homech.

Speaker 5 (57:37):
So I bring that up. A couple of Ron Rivera
coach teams after the Seahawks in twenty ten made the
play or won their division with losing records, both Carolina
and the Redskins. Rivera coached both of those teams to
the playoffs with Yeah, division championships with losing records, but

(57:58):
it could happened again. It could happen again in the
NFC West. Vince Arizona Seattle six and five, and I
think San Francisco and the Rams are five and six,
so that is correct. Yeah, so we'll keep an eye
on that. Seahawks with a couple of big wins here recently, however,
against the forty nine ers and then this past weekend

(58:20):
against Arizona. But nobody's really jumping out front there. The
Seahawks were the first to do it, and they've got
a little leg up to win the division. Again. What
their record might be, we don't know, but I would
really bet a lot right now that the division winner
is either going to be eight and nine or nine
and eight. I know that covers a lot of So.

Speaker 1 (58:40):
You going at Marshawn Lynch that game against the Bears,
they lost four attempts for just two yards, So you
might have gotten knocked out of that game. Yeah, so
because he would have certainly they was given him more
than four carries. Hassleback was twenty five for forty six
for two hundred and fifty eight yards and three touchdowns
in that game. I think a lot of that was

(59:01):
in kind of garbage time though.

Speaker 5 (59:02):
Yeah, the Bears opened up the lad as I remember.

Speaker 1 (59:05):
Yeah, because the Seahawks got twenty one points in the
last quarter to make the final thirty five to twenty four.
I don't think they covered that, did they Joe.

Speaker 5 (59:13):
No, no, no, I don't believe so. And then a
couple years later Seahawks win the Super Bowl, and then
the year after that, I guess, do you think they
should have given the ball to Lynch on second down
in New England? Probably against New England?

Speaker 1 (59:30):
There's uh yeah, we could say that now for sure, Yeah,
for sure. But you know, Pete Carroll actually did explain
why they didn't a few times on considering the clock.
I don't know the mechanics of it right now. There
was a stat though, where everyone assumed it was automatic.
You know, they had given the ball to Lynch on
the one yard line? Was it like six times that year?

(59:53):
And I don't know if he scored, maybe.

Speaker 5 (59:54):
Only that times part of the decision making, Yeah, he
almost scored on that play before, I mean, were one
you know? Oh you know, I can't remember the name
of the guy that tackled and they saved the game
for New England. He got him around the ankles and
Lynch went down at the two or between the two
and the one.

Speaker 1 (01:00:10):
Okay, well, here's another thing. What if if the Seahawks
score a touchdown there right on that play? How much
are they ahead by and the way that game was going,
who's to say New England doesn't get too quick. First,
they went down four goals.

Speaker 5 (01:00:22):
They were down four, they needed a touchdown to win.
The field goal was out of.

Speaker 1 (01:00:25):
The but so they would have been up by three
if they keok the extra point. Well then you know
the way the game was going crazy in that quarter,
back and forth, back and forth. Maybe New England comes
back and has a couple quick first downs and kicks
a field goal, because there would have been forty something
seconds on the clock with Tom Brady, I don't know,
getting way ahead of myself.

Speaker 5 (01:00:43):
Well, but no, you know you mentioned it, but Pete
Carroll sold me with all his staff on the reason
because they had a time out. So if you if
you run on second down and don't make it, you
have to take your time out there. I think there
was less than forty even Yeah, but anyway, they had

(01:01:04):
to take their time out there.

Speaker 1 (01:01:06):
I still recall that it was logical if you play
it was. It wasn't like they hadn't thought it through.

Speaker 5 (01:01:11):
Yes, you know, so second down everything the whole playbooks open,
run or passed. The defense has to be ready for anything,
because if you don't make it on second down with
a run, you use your last time out. Now you
have to pass because you have to have time for
fourth down.

Speaker 1 (01:01:30):
Yeah, so.

Speaker 5 (01:01:33):
Well that's why they passed on second.

Speaker 1 (01:01:35):
It's the national meeting. It's made it sound like, well,
so I just give them the ball and it's an
automatic touchdown, I mean, and that that that became the
crying call for everybody.

Speaker 5 (01:01:44):
And that was another part of the occasion that you
mentioned that Lynch's stats from the one or two or
something they were really poor.

Speaker 1 (01:01:51):
That's what you would have thought, No, you know, and
but yeah, should they have given a ball to probably?
You know, easy to say now.

Speaker 5 (01:01:58):
Is all right case? So we're looking keeping we're keeping
an eye on the NFC West rooting for the Hawks
and they could win it. Well, it's going to be
either eight or nine and or.

Speaker 1 (01:02:11):
Got the Jets coming up.

Speaker 5 (01:02:13):
Yeah, that's certainly a winnable.

Speaker 1 (01:02:15):
Now, you know, if they don't make the playoffs and
they end up losing to the Giants and the Jets, well,
then they've kind of made their own bed and can
line it, that's for sure.

Speaker 5 (01:02:23):
The Giants, how bad do they look right now?

Speaker 1 (01:02:25):
Well, and it's funny when they played the Seahawks. They
actually looked like a competent football team.

Speaker 5 (01:02:29):
They won that. They went out and took the game.

Speaker 1 (01:02:32):
Yeah so, but but I think McDonald's done a pretty
decent job here in his first season, having to replace
a legend.

Speaker 5 (01:02:41):
Okay, so, uh, not really any selections this week. Our
last show was Breeders' Cup show. We got several angles
from John White and Anthony Stabill.

Speaker 1 (01:02:54):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (01:02:55):
Anthony had that long shot to tumber Rumba in the
final race of the Breeders Cup, the dirt mile. Yeah,
that horse was in it all the way at big
number and ended up fourth. It wasn't a bad selection,
you know.

Speaker 1 (01:03:11):
Not a member of Serrano was the horse that won
that race? That John Sadr hit it up really winning
pretty oppressively.

Speaker 5 (01:03:19):
Yeah. Was that the horse that ran second the Pacific Classic.

Speaker 1 (01:03:22):
I believe so.

Speaker 5 (01:03:23):
Yeah to uh mixed do mixed dough right, Okay, yeah,
so I remember my selection the Breeders Cup was on Friday.
The Turf Sprint Juvenile Turf Sprint and Governor Sam ran
a big race, just couldn't quite hold off the Euros, which,

(01:03:44):
of course you're always worried about. He was third, beating
a length at about eight to one and you're you're
a mile.

Speaker 1 (01:03:51):
Horse had a good lead and yeah, right where we
wanted to be.

Speaker 5 (01:03:55):
He was over ten to one, wasn't he?

Speaker 1 (01:03:57):
Oh yeah, it was twenty oh boy the one. But
but as soon as the real running started, he he
was in deep water and gave it up pretty fast.
No shame there against some tough feel, but I thought
he might have a little more resilience down the lane.

Speaker 5 (01:04:14):
All right, okay, we're on the trivia. The last show,
our question was who was the first Washington based owner
to win a Breeders Cup race? And you probably know
this one. We had several participants there right away.

Speaker 1 (01:04:37):
But well, I know Sermon Sarkowski one with phone chatter.

Speaker 5 (01:04:42):
That was the next year he won in ninety three
at Santa Nita.

Speaker 1 (01:04:45):
Was it Mike Peger there it is, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:04:47):
Thirty Slughs. He was part owner of the Dutch Masters
or something I think owned that horse.

Speaker 1 (01:04:53):
Bob Effort's first ever Breeders Cup winner.

Speaker 5 (01:04:55):
Thirty Sleughs won the two sprint ninety two sprint at
Gulf Stream.

Speaker 6 (01:04:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:05:00):
Side note on that. The Sandia Presspajulio Canany made so
much money on that horse that they had to go
down and shut the window and go get more money.

Speaker 5 (01:05:09):
Is that right?

Speaker 1 (01:05:10):
Yeah? Well I think the horse was eighteen to one.

Speaker 5 (01:05:13):
So is Julio Cananny still a lot?

Speaker 1 (01:05:16):
No, he passed a few years.

Speaker 5 (01:05:17):
Okay, Yeah, he was a colorful guy down there. But
Mike Pegrim was living in Mount Vernon at that time
and didn't have a place down in Arizona. But I
had this McDonald's from Marysville, North and that was the
first Washington based owner to win a Breeders cup. Russ
got that one. Congratulations, Russ. I got to put together

(01:05:40):
some swag bags for our top trivia people here, all right,
this week's question is Colonel Ludlow is in the juvenile
at Zea Park today. Who is the most recent Gottstein
Futurity winner to win his or her next start in

(01:06:03):
that same season? So, at age two, you won the Gottstein,
you raced after the Gottstein, and you won your next start.
Who is the most recent winner of the Gotstein to
come right back and win again in a two year
old season. Send your answers to trivia at emeralddowns dot com.

(01:06:25):
Took me a little research to do that. I'll just
a hint right there. Okay, Vince, that's it. Thanks to
Blaine right and again. Emerald Down's open for some great
