Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
It's our one on this Tuesday. Come on in, stay
a while. Glad to have you on board, whether you're
watching on Peacock, our streaming partner, or you're listening on
our great radio affiliates around the country numbering over four
hundred cities. A couple of game fives tonight, Pacers and
the Knicks. The Pacers are two and a half point
underdogs in the Garden Timberwolves Game five in Denver. The
(00:27):
Timberwolves are four point underdogs. In that game, Celtics handled
the Cabs. They're up three games to one. No Donovan Mitchell,
and I think that injury might be a little more
serious than first thought. And I wonder if Donovan Mitchell
plays again in this series. Thunder over the MAVs, make
your free throws, Dallas. That series tied to two games
(00:47):
apiece SGA went for thirty four. I don't understand this.
And here's the analogy I'm going to give you. If
you go out on the basketball floor, what are you
going to do? Probably shoot a couple of mid range
jumpers and then you're gonna go start jacking threes, right
nobody goes to the free throw line. It's no fun
at the free throw line. If we go to the
(01:09):
driving range and there's also a putting green, what are
you gonna do. You're gonna pull out the driver and
bang drivers. You're not gonna go to the putting green.
Nobody wants to go to the putting green. It's boring,
it's not any fun. You want to ring the big
boy out, big stick out. You want to shoot threes,
you want to bring out the driver. Well, what do
(01:29):
you do if you need to win, what do you
need to do? Make a putt, make a free throw.
That's the comparison I would use. Dallas went twelve of
twenty three from the line. They shot fifty two percent.
Luca missed a crucial free throw with ten seconds to
go that would have tied it. Oklahoma City, by the way,
(01:50):
twenty three to twenty four, ninety six percent. Guess who
won free throws? Boring, right, You got to go to
the line. You got to practice going to the line
because in the game, that's what it's going to come
down to, one or two makes or missus. It's not
(02:11):
the three pointers. You got to make your free throws.
You can vomit three hundred and fifty yards Rory McIlroy.
But if you're going to win, you got to make
your putts, which he did this past weekend. Scotty Scheffler
is the best player in America, in the world. What
does he do extremely well? Putts? Tiger Woods change golf.
(02:32):
What did Tiger do from six feet in? He made
every put Some of the greatest players of all time
are some of the greatest free throw shooters of all
time as well. Welcome to the program. I'm already fired up.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
Very frustrating.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Yeah, I hate to see that. It's really really simple.
Get into a rhythm under Steph Curry has a drill. Now,
Steph Curry's different than everybody else. But here's the point.
Steph Curry will shoot free throws and he has to
make ten in a row. They can't touch the rim.
Try it ten in a row. It's really difficult to do.
(03:11):
But you get to the point. And also, here's another
thing that we used to do. We would run sprints
and then you'd stop, and then the coach would say
you shoot a free throw, because that's what happens in
a game. You don't go to the line and go
I'm gonna shoot ten in a row. Here it's you
shoot two and then you get off the line, you
run and up and down a couple times, and then
(03:34):
you go to the line. Your heart is still beating
out of your chest. Yes, that's what happens. That's real.
Not I can go out there and make eight out
of ten, no problem. I make six out of ten
with my eyes closed. But in a game, it's different,
and that's what happens. There's no excuse for pros to
(03:56):
shoot fifty two percent from the line. Cloma City went
twenty three at twenty four. There's the difference. Dallas. If
they lose, they may look back on this and say,
we should have won that game. We're at home, win
this game. Luca has not been one hundred percent, but
he's really been a detriment to them turnover wise. He's
(04:17):
taken a lot of shots. Kyrie didn't play well. I
mean they were in that game. Imagine stealing that game
because you made your free throws and they could have
done that. Twelve to twenty three, eight seven seven to
three DP show email address DP at Danpatrick dot com,

What's up homes Fast Protect Monitoring and go to simplysafdan

to play the day stat of the Day poll question,
all of that coming up. So basketball tonight, basketball last night.
Not sure the status of Donovan Mitchell. It's a calf
(05:02):
injury and it might be more serious than just a
temporary absence from that game last night. But the Celtics
are up three to one, probably only going to be
one more game. And the question is can you put
Donovan Mitchell in? Does he want to go in? Does
he want to try to push this? Canny even push this?
Is this something a little more serious? The Lions locked
(05:24):
up Jared Goff four years two, one hundred and twelve
million dollars one hundred and seventy million guaranteed. Okay, And
we did wonder about this, I think last week because
they wrapped up Penney Sewell. They're a great offensive lineman,
a'man Ross Saint Brown. They're a great wide receiver, and
I'm thinking, all right, Jared Goff got one more year
(05:45):
left on his deal, and I was wondering if he
would get into that Baker Mayfield area. That's a nice
neighborhood because is Jared Goff a top ten quarterback? Probably not,
But he's been to an NFC Title Game, he's been
to Super Bowl. Yes, he got kicked to the curb
by the Rams. That's another thing. A lot of times
we go, well, who won or who lost that trade.
(06:08):
That's a situation where there were both winners with the
Rams and the Lions. Because you get Matthew Stafford, he
helps you win a Super Bowl. And granted, golf, it's
a it's taken a little bit of time for him
to get re acclimated with his second career here now
in Detroit. But you know those draft picks. They got
(06:28):
Jamiir Gibbs and Sam Laporta, so they did pretty well.
I got golf and he's still young. I got two
players who contributed, actually three, They got the linebacker out
of Iowa as well, Campbell, so they got three guys
who contributed to that team that went to the NFC
Title Game. So he gets that new contract you know,
(06:51):
the Rams won their Super Bowl and Detroit is you know,
one of the favorites here to you know, win the
Super Bowl this year. In fact, I have them fourth
best odds right now according to DraftKings. I'll run down
the odds by the way. Kansas City they open up
the season and that'll be against the Ravens. Their next
(07:11):
game will be AFC North. The Cincinnati Bengals get used
to seeing a lot of Kansas City Chief games this
year after last year the ratings, You're going to see
a lot of Kansas City this year. Well, you've seen
a lot of Kansas City the last few years. All right, Seaton,
what's paul question for hour one?
Speaker 4 (07:32):
Which game are you most interested in tonight? Nick Pacers, Timberwolves, Nuggets,
Fever Sun.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Caitlin Clark makes her WNBA debut in Connecticut. I'm probably
more interested in the start of this, maybe the first
fifteen minutes, just to see how it goes, See how
she's playing, how you know, does she get roughed up
a little bit? Are they more physical? It's going to
be a sellout, be a big deal. Be a big deal.
(08:00):
And I would like to look back and remember when
she made her w NBA debut. I'd like to be
able to watch that. Uh. So I would say that
one to start Denver is going to be later tonight.
The NIXT that's pushed a little bit. They want to
try to get as much of that West Coast offense
audience as possible here. But the uh, I would say,
(08:22):
the Indiana fever versus the Connecticut son that's fun. Yeah,
it's a it's a fun it feels like an event, yes, yes,
and I think it will be presented that way. I
think it's all hands on deck for the mothership. They're
going to roll out the coverage, have all the analysts there.
I mean, it's it'll be a big deal. Yeah. You
don't get these a lot, no, no, but you know
(08:43):
I was. I was in Dayton, Ohio for Bill Walton's
debut and that was preseason game and it was against Kareem,
So I'm thinking, oh, wow, bringing Bill in and you
gotta you gotta face Kareem and uh and Bill look
like a rookie that night against Kareem, as you would expect.
But it was pretty cool to see that and actually
(09:05):
be there watching that. Uh. I'm trying to think of
any other you know, I remember Lebron's debut, the fact
he was in Sacramento, Like, what, why would you crazy?
Like you're going, Okay, we got this guy who's supposed
to be the next great player. We're gonna have him
make his debut in Sacramento, doming up the NBA season.
(09:28):
Who was the commissioner back then, Hey, Marvin, Yes.
Speaker 5 (09:32):
David Starr said, what a Sacramento? Yeah, I Kim at
Sacramento too, Yes, Christi Vladi diva.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
But why the Kings were good at that point? I know,
But why there were a lot of teams that were good.
You want to showcase Lebron and you send him to Sacramento.
So where would you have to put him? Either he
put him in the garden or at home or in
the Boston gardens. So not the Knicks, just at the garden. Well, no,
the Knicks would be there too. Yeah, people play at
(10:02):
the garden. They don't face the nose. They play at
the garden. Now, I would put him on display East
Coast time zone, so everybody got a chance to sample,
and you put him in Sacramento. I don't know if
I was this outrage back then, but I am now.
For some reason. By the way, who was courtside Cavaliers
last night? Back home? Yeah, Lebron and his wife Savannah
(10:26):
was there looking at schools, big hat. Yeah, and you
know that there's something going on here, because here's another thing.
Lebron comes in. Now he's not there when the game starts.
He comes in like midway through the first quarter, so
everybody gets to see him and his wife coming. Nothing
(10:47):
to see here, right, didn't he do this when he
was with the Miami Heat. Yeah, when he went back
to Cleveland. Yeah, and he flew from Chicago to Cleveland.
When zadrunas Ilgaska was getting his jersey retired, it was
a night off. Pat Riley wasn't happy. Lebron goes back
to Cleveland just for this event, big Z getting his
(11:09):
jersey retired. And then how much longer after that did
Lebron join the Cleveland Gamliers. Nothing to see here, no
leverage play here from Lebron. Play it play it? Oh yeah? Yeah.
Now do I think that he's could go back to
the Caves, Yes, I mean I have to. I have
(11:31):
to be realistic that there is a chance. Hey, what
if they draft Browning? Plus your path to getting back
to an NBA Finals is a whole lot easier in
the East than it is in the West. So I
could put together, uh, some bullet points, connect the dots,
and you go all right, all right, I might buy
into that.
Speaker 6 (11:51):
Yes, don I heard they were just going to go
to the movies and at the last minute he decided
to go to the basketball Oh.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Come, I do you have sources to Okay, alrighty stop
that the palaver?
Speaker 3 (12:05):
Yes, yes, I saw Lebron sitting there and he had
like a little mini bar between his legs. He had
a bottle of water. Whoa, I'm mean literal I figured him.
Oh he had a bottle of wine for himself.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Yeah, he's been doing that.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
But is it n babe, b yo b I've never
brought my own booze to a sporting event. Oh, actually
that's not true, but I usually don't front row.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Well, he did it right in front of it. Well,
who's going to tell him no?
Speaker 3 (12:29):
But that's pretty gutsy just to bring your own bottle
of wine.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Once again, if you can, you do. Yeah, he's a
big wine guy. But yeah, you know, all of a
sudden he's sipping wine there. I was waiting for a
cheese tray ip, shark couterie, chark couterie. Who came up
with that name? Shark couterie the French? The French. I
(12:53):
mean it's I'm not knocking it when I get it,
but it's just when you order it, it always sounds like,
can I have the charcuterie.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
Charcuterie is a branch of French cuisine devoted to prepared meats, bacon, ham, sausage,
et cetera, etc.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Etc. We just call it a grazing board.
Speaker 6 (13:11):
Now, yes, this justin Lebron is also a big wine
guy around the officials.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
So's okay, all right, you didn't believe in that joke
at the fourteen minute. I don't think you sold that.
I think you you delivered and then you realize you
might get roughed up a little bit. But I'm gonna
give you a blue. I thought there was pseudo clever.
Yeah wine thing. I think part of being a great comedian,
I mean not that you are, but great comedians they
(13:38):
commit to the line like they it's it's going to
be funny. You're now it's on you. You're trailed off
at the end.
Speaker 6 (13:45):
Yeah, it's like a little I lost confidence in the
last couple of syllables of the officiaty.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Get your head up. What else do we have there? See?
Speaker 4 (13:53):
Well, uh, you know big quarterback signing. Okay, there's a
bunch of quarterbacks who are up next to be signed
dot dot.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Yeah, let's say that. Let's say that. You know what,
let me take a break. You know, it's a funny
observation too. Am I gonna laugh? Probably not? Okay, but
I just noticed this. Good.
Speaker 4 (14:12):
Granted I don't pay much attention to this kind of thing,
but the w NBA team names.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
Overwhelmingly are singular.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
The Atlanta Dream, Chicago Sky, Connecticut Sun, Indiana Fever, New
York Liberty Aces.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
You're more attractive, that's plural.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
But the Seattle Storm, Phoenix Mercury, Minnesota Lynx, they're all singular.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
That funny.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
No, it's like a whole league of there's out of
the twelve teams in the league, there's only one, two, three,
four that have like a plural name, whereas it gets
the New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, they're all plural.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
I wonder if that was deliberately done.
Speaker 6 (14:59):
Guess I think that's interesting actually that why they did
it that way to you know, try to stand out
and not be too much like the NBA.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
No, yeah, Paul, if you're on the Indiana Fever, do
you say I'm a fever? I have the fever. Like
I was great being a fever all these years. It
was great having the fever.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Well, there's certain bands though that right, we're not sure
how to say because it's not plural, right, what's the
the who? The whom would be better? Yeah, yes, whom
they would not have been big if they were the
whom you know, ladies and gentlemen, the teenage ways. Yes,
(15:39):
we've had that problem with the heat also, yes, yes, yeah,
am I a heat. I'm proud to be a heat.
We are a heat. I'm a jazz. Yeah. Okay, now
we're getting someplace here. All right, let me take a break.
All the quarterbacks who are in the on deck circle.
After Jared Goff's contract, and I was surprised. I didn't
think Jared Goff had leverage here. I reached out to
Mike Florida Pro Football Talk, and he said, maybe Golf
(16:02):
would have held out of OTAs, but other than that,
why do I have to pay him that amount of money?
And you know, it's like kirk Cousins, what leverage did
he have? By the way, Kirk Cousins, I think is
joining us Thursday. It's correct. Okay, all right, I like that.
Get a couple of questions in there. All right, let
me take a break, just getting started, settle on our
(16:24):
poll question. And the NFL schedule is released tomorrow. But
it's starting to trickle out a little bit here. I
think the Jets open up with the Niners and Kansas
City's got AFC North back to back games. Yes to
why does anyone leak that?
Speaker 6 (16:40):
Like, like, why would a team or a league to
get gain more interest? People are interested in whether we
find out. If we find out beforehand, will be less
interested in tuning in tomorrow night.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Yes, yes, the reason you leak it is that it's
a topic for four or five days instead of an
hour on Wednesday Night.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
This will give everybody in New York a chance to
talk about the Jets and the Niners before the schedule
is released. Therefore, you get even more attention on shows.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
Okay, if Todd ran the league, he'd want less attention.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Well, no, I mean think of it. If you if
you don't know the Jets and Niners are going to
be playing in Week one. Then you're not talking about
it now that we know it. Now all of a sudden, okay, Jets.
People can talk about the Jets and the Niners, and
you get a chance to talk about that before the
schedules every day before the NFL Draft, here's the first
round for you, the biggest. But that's not what we're
(17:32):
talking about. But if anything that gets leaked up with
this schedule is already you already know who you're playing.
I just don't know what we You don't know who's drafting.
You already know who your opponents are. The question is
in what order? I guess that was an extreme exam.
It was, and you've been known to do that. You
started off well first fourteen minutes. Four hasn't gone well.
(17:54):
We take a break. Like I said a couple of
minutes ago, we take a break. You're actually show. I
guess you got to call when we burn it's your
show back after this.

Speaker 2 (18:48):
Oh, we've been talking about free throws. I know, not exciting,
but it decides games can cost you a championship. Donalds
mavericks you can't shoot fifth fifty two percent. You just can't.
In the opposition, it went twenty three to twenty four.
Luca at the line. Luca hasn't been a great free
(19:09):
throw shooter. I think he's improved, but he was like
a seventy seven percent free throw shooter. If you are
going to be a ball hog, ball dominant, you must
be a great free throw shooter, or at least very good.
Dallas went twelve to twenty three, fifty two percent. But
they haven't been good all season long. Only three other
(19:32):
teams shoot a lower free throw percentage than Dallas Mavericks.
Now that's everybody. Now, the thunder are one of the best.
Only three teams shoot a better free throw percentage than Oklahoma.
Citting got to make free throws, especially if you're going
to have the ball imperative.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
Yeah, Pauling, if at an entire NBA team is subpar
at shooting free throws, is that that has to be
on the coaching staff.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
Well, I'd like to know who you're shooting co coach is,
but it's on the players. You don't need anybody else
to be with you to work on your free throw shooting.
You just go out and you shoot. You should shoot
a hundred free throws. That should be just normal, and
you should make a certain percentage, and something should be
at stake. You should put something on the line. You're
(20:20):
gonna shoot against the teammate. The guy who makes the
most free throw of free throws doesn't have to buy
dinner like. Something has to be at steak there, and
you have to run sprints. You have to have game
like situations. I mean, it's this is common sense, but
nobody wants to shoot free throws because it's boring. It is,
(20:42):
but when you make them, it's boringly great, yes, Marvin,
But free.
Speaker 5 (20:48):
Throws feels like it's really mental because I'm sure somebody now.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
There's some bad form, there's some bad form.
Speaker 5 (20:54):
But have you ever seen somebody who makes free throws
in practice, but when it comes to game time, it's
just they get the yips?
Speaker 2 (21:01):
Yes, yeah, I get that. But you have to practice
the situation you're going to be in the best you can,
and that is be a little bit winded and then
go to line. But something's at stake when you go there.
If you just go out and shoot ten free throws,
you're like, okay, okay, okay, But all of a sudden,
(21:24):
we used to shoot free throws and if your teammate missed,
everybody had to run. So then everybody's mad at you.
There has to be something there on the line, not
just you at the free throw line. That has to
be something at stake. Yeah, Paully, this is interesting.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
I'd love to see a breakdown of like teams that
are better in tight situations with free throws. This is
this is helpful. The Denver Nuggets were the sixth worst
team in the league in the regular season in free
throw shooting. In the playoffs, they're the third best. They
went from seventy seven percent in the regular season to
eighty three percent in the postseason.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Yeah, out of a day, start of a day, Start
out a day, start of a day.
Speaker 8 (22:06):
This is the start of the day.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
Here's Jason Kidd, the Mavericks head coach, on missed free throws.
Speaker 5 (22:18):
Jason from the free throw free throw a lots tonight.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
Just what are you attribute that?
Speaker 9 (22:23):
So that's you know, one, it's probably unacceptable. You know,
we got to do better. We've talked about it as
a group. We can't shoot fifty percent if we want
to win, you know. So well, we'll talk about tomorrow
and we'll get better and we'll have opportunity on Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
Okay, you're not just getting better like it's not going
to happen. Hey, one day, it's all better. It's not.
And and it becomes contagious. When you're missing, somebody else
is missing. When you're making, then everybody else makes. But
you got to be in the lab. You gotta work
on this. It just you don't wake up and go, man,
(23:03):
I got a great night's sleep, I suddenly can shoot
free throws. A lot of it is there's really poor form,
and it's it's a rhythm. It's a flow when you
shoot a free throw. The great ones have a routine.
It's a flow. It starts from your feet all the
way up to you release in the ball. But it
drives me crazy when I watch how nobody cares about
(23:25):
shooting free throws and it's so easy. It's called a
free throw. Yes, Tod, it's not going to affect your
fallaciitty percentage.
Speaker 6 (23:34):
But can we stop after each shot it, especially if
you miss it, tapping each other and everybody on the team,
you got to slap them five, especially if you miss
it looks so ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
Yeah, we brought that up years ago. Yeah, Like everybody
on the team has to come and give you some
damn regardless of whether you got it in or not.
So if you make it, it's like all right, man.
If you miss it, it's like, hey, come on, you'll
get them next time.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
Yeah, Paul, So you should pick one either do the
do the moral support taps after a miss or the
congrashon and taps after a make.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
Not both.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
By the way, here's an interesting one. Janis at one
point in his career was a seventy seven percent free
throw leader. He got pretty good, seventy seven percent. He's
down to sixty five percent.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
The past two years. Yeah, that's a drastic drop for
a guy like Yeah. Plus he gets the line and
he dribbles, and he takes his time, and then a
crowd starts going on two three. I maintain, sometimes you
have too much time. Get there, get the ball. I
would dribble twice with my left hand and then I
would shoot. That was it twice? Boom?
Speaker 10 (24:32):
That was it?
Speaker 2 (24:33):
Just get into a rhythm there. But these are professionals.
Why is it that at my age that I can
shoot free throws better than a lot of these pros.
But it's because I cared about shooting free throws and
I have a form and I have touch. But these guys,
(24:56):
I mean, you can have so much athleticism. It's like,
uh yeah, I'll get a round of that now, you know, Hey,
watch this dunk. I'm practicing, like, shoot free throws fifty
two percent twelve to twenty three.
Speaker 3 (25:08):
Would you go down to Dallas and help them out.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
I've been to Dallas to help Jason Kidd many many
many years ago. You can use out. Yes he could.
But there are some really good shooting coaches, really good
and you know it depends on how much you stress this.
But you can't go. You know, we'll address this tomorrow
and all of a sudden it's going to be great.
(25:30):
Like what are you gonna do? How do you address this?
I can address your shot selection or are you making
the extra pass? Are you playing defense? I don't know
if I can fix a free throw shooter in twenty
four hours. I'll try, Yes, marmn what angers you more?
The misfree throws or carrying? I'm gonna say free throws.
(25:53):
I'm gonna say free throws. Carrying. That's on the NBA.
They've allowed this to happen. Now you know you're not
gonna You're not to take it. I love the reaction
of a player when they do call carrying. It's like,
are you serious you're gonna call carrying? Nobody calls carrying.
It's like nobody calls traveling. Miss free throws drives me crazy.
Get there, make your free throws. That's it. I gotta
(26:20):
shake it off here. Come on, let's rally. Okay, come on, come, on,
let's rally, Come on, come on, care the line, take
a deep breath, let's go make your thrust. I'm still
critiquing seat and shot for no reason other than I
can see him. He has really good form, but he's
out there. I go, no, no, you bring it now,
you gotta keep it. Over here on the right side,
he has a little bit of a hesitation for no reason.
(26:42):
He's not playing in a pickup game. It's just I
see it. I say it, yes, but I have that
not really the same tick. But there is something about
a basketball shot and form that you're still even though
I haven't played in anything competitive in twenty plus years,
you know, I'm still like God, it's just not leaving
my hand right. It's not leaving the right fingers there
(27:04):
the last ones to touch the ball, they aren't whatever.
There's something about basketball that does that. And it's like
when Doug Gottlieb said, oh, maybe they could fix Caitlin
Clark's shot, and I went, ooh, fix is the wrong word.
Maybe you can help improve, but I just want to
know where is your hand, your arm, your follow through
(27:24):
at the end of the shot. That's what I want
to know. Now, can we speed it up. Okay, that's
something that maybe you could work on. But she did
a pretty good job in college. She did. And Doug
made the mistake of saying fix her shot instead of
improving her shot, because fix it's not broken. You can
(27:46):
make something better, but that doesn't mean it's broken.
Speaker 3 (27:49):
Yes, Paul, golf and basketball, and I didn't play any
either at high levels, but just casually playing. It's fascinating
how you could be in the middle of your shot
or in the middle of your backswing and no, this
is going to be a nice one, or this is
going to be a disaster. Yeah, it's like it's an
I'll be bringing a golf club down of like, oh boy,
yeah it's and then and vice versa. Oh this feels okay.
(28:09):
And you see out there, when you're shooting a basketball,
halfway through the shot, you can almost hit stop and
say that's going in or that's not.
Speaker 2 (28:15):
Yeah, yeah, all right, I'll get off my free throw.
Tangent here just drives me crazy, all right. Play the
day is coming up. We got our hour one pole question, Seaton.
Speaker 4 (28:26):
Yeah, we're gonna go which which game are you most
interested in tonight? Knicks, Pacers, Timberwolves, Nuggets fever sunka. I
know there's NHL playoffs tonight. This is comparing the w
NBA and the NBA. Yeah, are you more interested in
watching Kitlyn Clark make her debut in the w NBA
or two playoff games in the NBA?
Speaker 2 (28:47):
Well, the Denver game won't be going on at that time,
but the Knicks game will be. So it's would you
rather watch Kaitlyn Clark with her debut or the Knicks
Pacers game five.
Speaker 4 (28:56):
I didn't want to insult the Nuggets because you know,
they get out of shape when it's like, yeah, we're
also playing tonight too, people might be interested in looks you.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
Just like hockey fans out right now?
Speaker 4 (29:05):
Well, uh, you realize the playoffs are going on right now, Like, yes,
you big babies.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
Hurricanes made it a series. I was watching that game
last night. It was like Canes are staying in this,
They're staying in this. Then all of a sudden, it's like,
oh boy, yeah, New York was a whole lot of
fun last week. Now all of a sudden, this week
it's like, well, you know, the Nicks had a good showing.
We got no bench, We have no bench.
Speaker 3 (29:33):
Okay, yes, Pauli tonight for hockey Bruins at Panthers game
four No. Five five, Yes, and Canucks at Oilers game.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
There'll be some bad blood in that. At Panthers Bruins game. Yeah,
very chippy. Yeah, Marshaun, you know, I don't think he's playing,
and they're upset about that. The Stars had to win
beat the Avalanche and Carolina the Rangers staving off elimination there, Yes,
Marvin A Rangers. Don't blow this. That's a fire man,
(30:09):
thank you. That's our that's our hockey analysis. Wow, last
week it was all good just a week ago. New
York fans. Don't blow this. Great, great time to be
in New York. Maybe not this week, yes, Paulie Quick
Hockey poll.
Speaker 3 (30:23):
Hurricanes Avalanche both playing last night. Which would you rather
get caught.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
In a hurricane or an avalanche? A hurricane that's correct, Yes,
easier to avoid, Yes, yes, an avalanche if you're in
the path of it, it seems like there's not much
you could do. I've been in a hurricane, and I've
been in a tornado, haven't been in an avalanche, and
I have no interest. Yes, Tom.
Speaker 6 (30:44):
If the Canes went at home Thursday game, seven at
the Garden on SATURDAYDD.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
We're talking with her, all right, So Jared Goff got
his first fourteen minutes good though by you it all bounced.
Even Steven was not a TV show, Even Steven.
Speaker 6 (31:07):
It might have been at Seinteff once had a reference
about that too, called themselves, even Stephen, or maybe it
was George. I mean, anytime something good happened, something bad
has to happen right after it to be even.
Speaker 2 (31:16):
Okay, I'm not a Seinfeld fan, and the people who
still use oh, you know that reminds me of a
Seinfeld episode, like they still use that. I mean it's
a powerful point to make about how impactful that show was.
I just don't do those that reminds me on Seinfeld.
You know, they had an episode.
Speaker 3 (31:37):
We've talked about this a bunch, And there's a reason
that the nineties you didn't watch stuff at eight o'clock
PM Eastern on a Thursday. You were prepping for Sports
Center instrument for basically a decade, So you didn't watch
Seinfeld or Friends on their first run, or maybe even
the Sopranos on their first run.
Speaker 2 (31:52):
Basically in that Oh, I didn't watch Sopranos on the
second or third run.
Speaker 3 (31:55):
But the nineties, you didn't watch primetime show.
Speaker 2 (31:57):
I did not watch. There were so many show When
people say, did you see that episode of r and
I go, nope, I'm just watching you know, uh, the
Indians and Brewers.
Speaker 10 (32:07):
You know.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
I didn't get to see a lot of those shows.
And they'd be like, uh uh you know, throw out
a show that was popular back then. Uh, everybody loves Raymond.
I go, uh, not me. They didn't get to see it. Friends.
Now I've made up for lost time on Friends, you know,
because I'll be watching those back episodes. Yeah. Yeah, I
just love Rachel's hairdoos.
Speaker 5 (32:27):
Yes, yes, mar My wife just asked me, have you
ever seen an episode of Friends? And I said, no,
should I should? I give Friends a chance?
Speaker 8 (32:35):
It?
Speaker 2 (32:37):
Well, I mean, if you want to see the pretty
women there, then but I'm trying to laugh. I mean,
that's it. Wow, it's it's corny. It's not it's not
well written. Is it funny than Will and Grace? I
never saw an episode of Will and Grace? Oh wait
wait what? Uh wait? What am I missing here? No,
(32:57):
it's funny, it's legit funny. Okay. Well, Sean Hayes is funny.
Speaker 3 (33:01):
Yeah, Will and Grace is much more of a true
comedy with more jokes, and the characters were a little
much more snarky. Friends is like a likable pastime. Watching
that show a lot of relationship humor.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
It's like a meal that doesn't fill you up and
you just go, Okay, got the job done. Yeah that's fine. Mom,
As we can meet Loaf again. Yeah, yeah, I mean
the women are beautiful and so are the guys, but
it's corny. You know, it's corny. And Ross drove me
crazy and wanted to smack him, like, come on, let's
go get your act together, dude. You got Rachel there?
Speaker 6 (33:35):
Yes, ton Megan malally stole the show and Will and
Grace in many episodes, even though it was about two
other people in a side role. She was probably the
funniest one on that show.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
M yeah, I never saw an episode. All right, let
me take a break. Play of the Day up next.
Speaker 1 (33:49):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio.
Speaker 8 (33:57):
Wapp Oh my God, The Play of the Day letter,
Look my God, The Play of the day.
Speaker 2 (34:09):
Check this out deep on the left side again, the
way Darling jumps out of them, Ta turns the corner, takeout.
Speaker 1 (34:13):
Open, Jalen three.
Speaker 8 (34:15):
Get it.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Jalb Brown knocks.
Speaker 7 (34:18):
Down the Killer three with a minute seven to go,
and that's all that separates the Celtics from a three
to one.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
Seriously, that's courtesy of the Sports Hub Celtics Radio network.
Celtics can close out the Cavaliers at home on Wednesday.
Play the Day brought to you by tire Rack, the
official tire expert of this show. Go to tire rack
dot com. Slash Dan tried the Tire Decision Guide. Full
lineup of Kumo tires, special offers, free road hazard protection,
(34:44):
mobile tire installation, tirerac dot com. The way tire buying
should be. We'll talk about quarterback contracts. Jared Goff got paid.
There is some incredible stance comparing Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford.
I'll have I had for you at the top of
the hour, like mind boggling, But Jared Goff threw for
forty five hundred yards, thirty touchdowns and twelve interceptions. By comparison,
(35:11):
Patrick Mahomes threw for four hundred yards less, three fewer
touchdowns and had two more interceptions. Josh Allen had two
hundred almost three hundred yards less passing yards, one less touchdown,
six more interceptions. CJ. Stroud four hundred yards less than passing,
(35:33):
seven less touchdowns. He did have only five interceptions. So
there's a new wave of quarterbacks here, and the question
is are they all going to get paid? We'll talk
about that coming up at the top of the hour,
because you're gonna have Dak. Dak's gonna bet on himself
and see what happens. How they rolled the dice in
Dallas if he's going to get sixty million dollar contract
(35:57):
per year to rock Party is also in there, Trevor
Lawrence is in there, So we'll talk a little bit
more about that coming up at the top of the arm.
Let me get some phone calls in here. John and Wisconsin.
Good morning, John, what's on your mind?
Speaker 10 (36:14):
Yeah, first time, long time, five eight one sixty. Well,
want to talk about free throws. I read a book
by a plastic surgeon Max Somebody. I think he created
psycho cybernetics. But in the book he talks about a
study they did with some college basketball players I think
(36:37):
where they divided him into three groups. Long they had
him practice free throws for a week. The second one
was like the control group, they didn't do anything, and
the third group they just had him visualize making free throws.
You know, they didn't they just imagined that. They all
(36:57):
went in and I guess the group that actually practiced
the free throwers and prove like twenty three percent, and
the group that you know, just visualized did like twenty
two percent over the control group. So you can call
Jason Kidd and tell them just have them, have them
visualize it when they're on the plane, or you know,
just well.
Speaker 2 (37:18):
Confidence plays such a role because when you get there,
everybody the action stops. If you're on the road, the
crowd is on you that there's a lot going on,
and then you got to focus. Same thing. When you're putting,
everybody stops, nobody says a word, and you're over your
putt and you're six feet away. Now, if you're on
(37:43):
the practice green, you're like, it is not going them in,
and then all of a sudden you start to think,
what about let me take it back in my hands
and my head and my eyes. And that's what happens.
You get to the point when you put or when
you shoot free throws, you've already thought about that. You
(38:04):
think about it before you get into the moment. You
don't think about it in the moment. That's all that practice,
all that repetition. You get there, you're comfortable, it's your
safe space. But for some reason, guys get there and
they freeze up. Uh Lucas and Texas. Hi Luke, welcome back.
(38:25):
Hey Dan, good morning, Good morning.
Speaker 11 (38:27):
I've got a quick schedule question. But y'all, you guys
were talking to charcuterie boards earlier, something that deserves a
shout out. The one Super Bowl commercial that made me
laugh this year was when France gave us the Statue
of Liberty and we had to say, oh crap, what
do we get them? And we bought them a Charcuteri
board and they all went crazy. It was very well done,
very well done. No, a question for scheduling, And I'm
(38:49):
going to preface this. I know it's a ridiculous question
to ask, but there's some I mean, we know that
no one sits at the intersection of sports and pop
culture quite like Dan, and so the question is, as
they get ready to release a schedule. Does somebody from
the NFL reach out to Taylor Swift camp and say,
what does travel look like? Where are you going to be?
(39:11):
Because in my mind, you know, when scheduling the Los
Angeles the game with the Chargers in LA, do you
look at when she might be close by or whatnot?
I mean, I know it's a crazy question, but do
you think there are things like that, like where she
might be in attendance to try to drive up the
highballs and the ratings for those games.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
I don't know if she's still going to be on tour.
She's in Europe now, but I don't know. Let's say
she was touring in the United States during the football season,
would I at least be aware of it? Sure? But
am I going to schedule games in accordance to will
Taylor Swift be there? No? Yes, marmon, I'm.
Speaker 5 (39:47):
Looking on Taylor Swift's website right now because I frequent
this one. She is on a Canadian tour in November
and December. Now yep, sorry speaking for the league, so.
Speaker 2 (39:58):
That doesn't help. She's in Toronto and she could go
to Buffalo. Yes, big year for the CFL. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I met a guy last night. He's a driver, and
he said it's amazing the number of trips he makes
to JFK Airport picking up Taylor Swift fans and their
(40:22):
mom who have come back from Europe. It's cheaper to
fly to Paris to watch Taylor Swift in concert and
then fly back than it is to try to get
tickets here. He said, it is crazy at the airport
with the number of Taylor Swift fans and their mom
or dad or both in tow that they have gone
(40:43):
to Paris to watch. She's going to make a billion
dollars off this tour, but those are the estimates. It's
already a billionaire. Yes, have you seen her in concert?
I saw her. It wasn't a concert. It was the
opening when we did the Super Bowl. Was that in
New Orleans? I think Dave Matthews band and Taylor Swift
(41:04):
were performing. That was before the season opening game on NBC,
I believe. But that's his closest I've come to see.
I'd love to go see the show, probably get emotional.
Go to Toronto. Yeah, all right, one hour in the books.
We'll check in with the Detroit Lions coming up. Also,
Reggie Miller will join US as well.
