Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to The Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
It's the final hour in this Thursday Dan and the
Dan N's Dan Patrick Show. We are trying to dress
up this program literally, Todd, Seaton, Marvin all look great
suit and ties on today. We're just trying to maybe
present ourselves in a different light, kind of recreate ourselves.
(00:25):
Happens all to's a makeover maybe is what this is.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Yes, Marvin, Yeah, I was just trying to be like
Ken Rosenthal slash Ernie Johnson. Those those guys are big
with the bull ties. Okay, so you know what, trying
to get on that level sports any time it looks good.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
What daytime? Emmy? Excuse me. Stat of the Day brought
to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of
The Dan Patrick Show NBC Sports Championship season. It continues
the Indy five hundred Sunday at eleven am Easter on
NBC and Peacock, which is where you can find this program.
Say good morning are radio affiliates around the country. The
Pacers getting nine ooints tonight against the Celtics Game two,
(01:03):
Timberwolves are still big favorites against Dallas, even though they
lost Game one and lost at one eight one oh five.
Mavericks are up one to OHO in the series. So
you have that tonight with the Pacers, Celtic's Oilers and
the Stars. Game one as well. All NBA team was announced.
Were there any surprises? Is Jason Tatum first Team All
(01:25):
NBA a surprise? Maybe he just put up these number
like it's sort of the same Jason Tatum each year
and maybe that's not fair to him. Where we go, Okay,
Shay gilgis, Jason Tatum, you got Joker, Luca and who else? Oh, Jannis?
(01:47):
So that's the starting five. We just had Charles Barkley
on and he said it's time for the rest of
the world to face the United States and the All
Star Game. Now we've brought this up before. How many
great players that are born outside the United States can
you have on that team? Foreign born European, even Canadian
(02:11):
players Shay Gilgess Alexanders from Canada. But if I get Luca,
I get the Joker. Shay Gilgis Joel Embiid, although isn't
Joe Ellenbiid? Doesn't he want to play for the United
States that.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
He is playing for Team USA?
Speaker 2 (02:27):
This summer? Okay, but can we still have him play
for the he was still born okay? Overseas Jamal Murray Canadian?
Who else can I put in there? R? J? Barrett,
Laurie Markinen.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
But now you're kind of going ask.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
I know that there's a big drop off. It's really
top heavy like that. Our starting five is like, okay,
that's a good start. Now is it a good All
Star starting five? Where it's up and down, fast paced?
Does does the pace change because it's a little more serious?
Would you guys be in favor? Let's go round the room.
(03:07):
If I said you could have us versus the world?
Would you want that in the All Star Game time?
Speaker 4 (03:13):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (03:13):
All right? Seaton?
Speaker 5 (03:14):
Sure?
Speaker 2 (03:15):
What not? Marvin? Yes?
Speaker 6 (03:16):
PAULI original and fun? Yes, yeah, and probably competitive.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
I'd like to see that. I think it'd be fun.
Let's try it. We already know what the Plan B is.
Let's let's try a new Plan A. I'd be fine
with that, yeah, Paul.
Speaker 6 (03:30):
The USA team would probably be quite older if you
think of it's Steph Curry, Lebron Durant amongst the top seven. Yeah,
I'm sure I can get some more.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
You're gonna get Tatum you'll get Jalen Brown. You're gonna
have enough. You're gonna have an even evenly distributed roster.
Speaker 6 (03:49):
There are starting five My average age of thirty five though,
because you know Curry's gonna have to start out of respect.
Lebron out of respect starts. Durant starts average ages thirty six.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yeah. I think it'd be fun. Yeah, let's see, let's
try it. We know what it looked like the last
couple of years with first team to two hundred. All right,
the pole question for the final hours, what Seaton O'Connor.
Speaker 7 (04:16):
Did you mention Kyrie as international as well? Would he
count he was born in Australia.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
M okay, little loophole? He played for Team USA? He did? Yeah, yes, Mark.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
What about Paulo Bancero. He's from Seattle, Washington, but it
sounds international.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
I can't. I don't think he's from Italy. But Franz
Wagner feels like, you know, from Germany, even though I
might be born in the United States. Yes, Seon al Horford,
Dominican Republican. Alrighty ow, Hall of Famer Al.
Speaker 7 (04:56):
Horford's are getting a little more lopsided than you originally.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
Thoughts Paul Ben Simmons said he won't play for the
international team. He already plans on being injured. Yeah, yeah,
he's out, and of course he's out of the game.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Oh yeah, smart the game changer himself.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Karl Anthony Towns played for the Dominican Republic in a
World championship in Puerto Rico.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
All right, right, I'm gonna take that.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
That's another one.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
I'm gonna take that. Jamal Murray, Yeah, we mentioned.
Speaker 7 (05:25):
Jam Okay Okay Andre Ayton.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
DeAndre, and we did not mention Bahamas.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Ohamas.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
I don't think he'd make the team Dan Dangamian team. Yeah,
maybe maybe maybe.
Speaker 8 (05:39):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Jason Kidd, the Maps head coach, had some nice words
of praise for Kyrie Irving's first half last night. What
was Kyrie doing in the first half? Jason went to
twenty fourth posts to kind of set the tone.
Speaker 9 (05:52):
He was being kind, you know, just picking his spots
using uh, you know, a different player is on the
floor to attack. I thought he did a great job
of helping everybody relax, you know, on the offensive end,
and then I thought defensively he was competing. We had
to do a better job of garding at three point line.
(06:13):
But I thought Kai was big for us in that
first half and got us off to a good start
and we were only down three, and we just felt
like we didn't play well.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Yeah, he had twenty four in the first half, and
Game one played out in some ways the way I thought,
and that is a lot of pick and rolls. Luca
would go into the lane, throw alley oops there, they
would take advantage in the paint. Minnesota shooting a lot
of threes. That surprised me, And I guess Dallas's philosophy
(06:44):
is go ahead. I still and Charles Barkley pointed this out.
Karl Anthony Towns very talented seven footer, but at some
point got to go down low, like do this like
you did in the previous series. Do like you did
against Phoenix. Advantage of that. If it's an advantage, take
advantage of it. But he likes to stay on the
(07:05):
perimeter shooting threes. I get it a lot, a lot
less wear and tear when you're just out there going
I'm just gonna wait, Hey, hey, I'm open.
Speaker 7 (07:14):
He's one of the first big men who changed the game. Yes,
of course he does, so it's kind of his calling card. Yes,
it is, yes, Marvin.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
In today's NBA, there's not a lot of big men.
There's a lot of tall men. Okay, Like there's not
just guys that are just post up, go on the
block and get buckets. Those guys sit on the perimeter
and try to jack up threes.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
I know, gotta go inside occasionally. Don't be afraid to
go inside occasionally get a bucket. Never understood that, Hey,
we're not hitting our threes. How about we try twos.
How about we go to the hoop. How about we
shoot a free throw?
Speaker 7 (07:50):
But I might hit the next one. The lore of
the next one is way stronger than these two of
right now, That is true.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
That is true. Yeah, coach man, I'm feeling it. Then
you hit that next one and then you get that
green light, you get to take five more.
Speaker 7 (08:05):
Who was it last night that it's like Kyle Anderson
or somebody that Luca was like he was staying fifteen
feet off of him. He's like whatever and.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Put one up and made it.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Like Mark in California, Hi, Mark, what's on your mind?
Speaker 4 (08:19):
Hey Dan?
Speaker 10 (08:20):
Hey fellas. So I wanted to obviously talk about you
guys outfits, and then I want to talk about the
fact that I bought another T shirt off at Danpatrick
dot com. But I think you guys look amazing, Pauli especially.
I love the Santa Monica track club. It brings me
back to the eighties and Carl Lewis. It's a great,
(08:41):
great shirt. Marvin, you look great, but the back row
seating then, Pritzy, you guys look literally like you're from
pre internet press room guys with cigarette stains and coffee. Fritzy,
you look like you're about to go on a cast
and call for the next Oscar Madison. So, having said that,
(09:02):
I bought my DDC shirt because I'm a three time DDC.
Speaker 11 (09:07):
My dad passed.
Speaker 10 (09:09):
Ten years ago, I divorced four years ago, and unfortunately
for me, I'm dead to my daughter.
Speaker 7 (09:16):
So there you go, yikes and handling it well, Mark.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Yes, Wow, sorry to hear that.
Speaker 7 (09:23):
Thanks, that's a self deading. Yes, his dad is dead,
he's dead to his daughter and he's divorced.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (09:33):
I wonder if Mark has ever had a dog. That
would qualify him for Mark, if you lost a dog.
Speaker 10 (09:40):
Well, of course, you know, I'm a fifty six year
old man. I've lost multiple dogs, but I currently have three,
so I'm good there.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
All right, Well, good luck Mark John in Oregon, Hi John,
what's on your mind? All right?
Speaker 12 (09:53):
Dan, thanks for having me. I'm a six to three
and over medium two fifty five, not stop but also
not firm. Hey, I just want to congratulate, congratulate you guys.
Just clear off the mantle for that sports to me
that in that MLB tonight's demo in the suit that's
on your live lookain chef's kiss just beautiful. Clear off
that space.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
Thank you, thank you, yes, John.
Speaker 6 (10:16):
And just to.
Speaker 12 (10:16):
Answer Marvin's question earlier, take a look at the Colorado
Avalanche Detroit Red Wings brawl in nineteen ninety seven. You
get to see the great Patrick Waw take on Mike
Vernon in one of the best goalie fights.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Yeah, goalie on goalie cron. Yeah, thank you John. Yeah,
we figured we lost to MLB tonight. They won the
Sports Emmy. They do a lot of demos, and I said, well,
you guys got your suits and ties on, how about
we do a demo and then we submit that with
our rest of our Sports Emmy highlights here, and then
maybe we confuse them a little bit, or maybe we
(10:51):
say to the Emmy people the voters. I guess anybody
can do one of these demos these knuckleheads did. Now
we take MLB tonight out of the running, we diminish
their skills there. I think we did a pretty good
job in teaching how you turn two and stay out
of the way of the runner coming in with his
(11:13):
spikes up high. Seaton did a wonderful job. I saw
where the commissioner, Roger Goodell, was talking about a possible
eighteen game schedule, and I thought, okay, well, it feels
like it's going to happen. Question is when it's going
to happen, and here is the commissioner talking about that possibility.
Speaker 13 (11:31):
The key thing for us is looking at making sure
we continue to do the things to make our game safer.
So we want to make sure that that hits the
first boundary. The seventeen games is a long season, so
we want to make sure we look at that, make
sure that we continue the safety efforts. You've seen a
lot of the outcomes of that kickoff, so a good
(11:52):
example of the hip drop. So we're going to continue
to do that. That's number one. Working with our players' associations.
Number two, you would reach and agreement with them if
we're going to proceed on that level.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Okay, so if we get rid of a couple of
preseason games, then we can have an eighteenth game. And
he's worried about safety. So most of your stars don't
play in the preseason, right, They do play in the
regular season, and the games in the regular season are
(12:25):
a whole lot different than the preseason. I don't understand
the logic of safety here. Most of your good players
don't play in the preseason, so they're not at risk there,
but they will be at risk if there's another regular
season game. It feels like it's a little of Hey,
don't look over here. Look what we're doing over here.
We're getting rid of a couple of preseason games. Well,
(12:48):
you had four, and you didn't need four. Now I
know you need preseason games so the players who are
trying to make rosters get an opportunity. How about a
mixed scrimmage. Well you're not gonna make money off of
mixed scrimmage the way you would a preseason game. So
it comes down to money for the owners. That's what
this is. Not about safety. They had four preseason game, Hey,
(13:10):
we're gonna get rid of two. Of them. Hey, two
preseason games equals one regular season game. I don't think
player safety is really the factor here.
Speaker 6 (13:21):
Yeah, Paul Marvin, I were just talking. Even without preseason games,
you could but do a mixed scrimmage. I think I
remember the Texans used to do these. They were doing
like the Falcons. Yeah, imagine you've did a mixed scrimmage
with two teams and all the mics were on, and
there's a couple of NFL network reporters there and it's
sponsored by whoever. People are jonesy for football so much
on August ninth, I'll tune into that.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
Yeah, but the owners want to make money. They want
you at the stadium, they want to sell concessions. They
will I mean, what are we talking about.
Speaker 6 (13:48):
They're gonna, you know, like you said, they're gonna dump
two preseason games look over here, and then we'll add
the eighteenth.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
You can't talk about player safety when you're gonna add
another regular season game. You're gonna take away two preseason
games that they're not even playing in. You know, the
concussion lawsuits over. If that's the case, then let them
wear those large foam helmets. Like if you really want
(14:13):
player safety, let them wear those safety helmets. There. Here's
Andy Reid talking about the NFL upcoming schedule.
Speaker 14 (14:24):
They don't ask me. It's the first time my cur
that that's happens.
Speaker 5 (14:27):
Unique.
Speaker 14 (14:27):
So you know how we are. I mean, we don't
really care. They could give us a Tuesday game if
they want. We'll be okay there too. So we work
through it and we'll play any anybody, anywhere, whatever they
want to do.
Speaker 5 (14:39):
We're on board.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
The Chiefs play every day of the week this upcoming season,
except for Tuesday, because you got Christmas on Wednesday. So
every week, you know, a Thursday night game, there'll be
a Friday night game, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. Tuesday is the
only day that they won't have a game this upcoming season.
Wild Start Up Day, Start up to Day eight, Status.
Speaker 4 (15:01):
Day, Status to day, the Status day, Status Today, startup today, Start.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Stat of the Day brought you by Penine America, the
official trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show. Kevin in Japan,
Hi Kevin, what's on your mind?
Speaker 11 (15:19):
Say then? Six foot two hundred, I got two things
for you. Want to say hi to my dad who's
listening in Texas. Second thing, would you rather win an
Oscar for an Adam Sandler movie or Sports at Me
with a crew.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Well, I know I have a chance of winning one
and not winning the other. I would win. So I
could win an Oscar with a Sandler movie, Happy Gilmour two,
or I could win a Sports Emmy. We've been nominated
five times for Sports Emmy. Last I looked all of
my movies. They haven't been nominated for an Academy Award
(15:58):
an Oscar, would I I'd rather win a Sports Emmy
because then it's just us. Sandwich's got a half a
billion dollars. I mean, it doesn't need an Oscar, but
I'd rather win a Sports Emmy. Yes, yes, any chance.
Speaker 6 (16:13):
Happy Gilmore two is like Godfather too, where some people
think it's better than the original.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
Yeah, some people. Well, if I ever get around to
watching them, I'll let you know. You know, you really should,
Like I know, I should watch the Sopranos, Like, there's
a lot of shows I should watch.
Speaker 6 (16:30):
I would say The Godfather more so because it's it
is great filmmaking. Beyond the topic the first one, they're
both great. I would say you could skip three casually.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
Okay, I just didn't buy Diane Keaton as his wife.
Speaker 7 (16:46):
She's not the strongest part of it.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
No, but I don't know.
Speaker 6 (16:49):
She's supposed to be an outsider, which clearly she.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
I mean, she's had a long career, legendary career. I
just didn't she looked out a place. I don't know.
I'll get around to watch it one of these days
when we come by.
Speaker 7 (17:05):
A Shire by the way. Is in just a tour
de force in those movies, is she? Yes, that's where
you get a real glimpse into exactly who she is
as an actress.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
Your husband, your husband.
Speaker 7 (17:21):
She's just she's one of the greatest crying actresses of
all time.
Speaker 6 (17:25):
Really, your family, Rockey, the Dick Vermeil of Hollywood.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
Well, it's Dick for meal a female actors.
Speaker 7 (17:33):
It's like, you see she's in the movie, and you're like, okay,
when's it coming, Okay, hold up in about you know,
an hour and change in, You're like, here we go,
let's get to husband.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
Yes, Marvin, has she ever been happy in any movie
she's done. I don't know if she's been in a
lot of movies. Yes, Sally Field will be on the
mount Rushmore crying actresses. I think they're not tal her Shire.
But in that ilk when we come back the chain
landscape of sports media back after this.
Speaker 1 (18:04):

Speaker 8 (18:15):
Pollie Fusco here with Tony Fusco. You know, as the
host of the number one rated Paully and Tony Fusco Show.
We get tons and tons of fanmail every day.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Piles of it.
Speaker 8 (18:24):
In fact, Tony, why don't you open up one of
those letters right now and read what's inside?
Speaker 15 (18:28):
Hey, listen to this. Dear Pauli and Toni, your sports
takes the dumbest and most terrible.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
That why open this other one?
Speaker 15 (18:36):
Dear Pauli and Toni, you suck more than anyone. Wait,
try this one, Dear Paulie and Tony, you guys are
the absolute best. There you go coming up with the
stupidest take.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Forget it.
Speaker 8 (18:49):
Just listen to the Polly and Tony Fusco Show on
the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
Yeah, spend some time last hour with Charles Barkley. He's
still not sure what the future of inside the NBA
on TNT is this man can give us better insights.
Mike McCarthy, senior reporter for Front Office Sports columnists for
Tuned In Sports Media. Mike joins us on the program.
We keep hearing that the deals aren't done yet, that
(19:17):
TNT still has a chance to keep the NBA rights.
Can you update us well, Dan.
Speaker 5 (19:23):
I think the game is about on the ten yard
line now. It's certainly heading in the direction of NBC
and Amazon picking up the rights while ESPN keeps the package.
On the other hand, T and T still has matching rights,
and there hasn't been an official offer to match yet,
so we're still kind of at a waiting stage. I
(19:43):
don't think it's going to happen this week, you know,
certainly before Memorial Day. But it is close. But as
they say, you know, close only kemtson horseshoes and hand grenades,
so we're not there yet.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
I was wondering, and I brought this up to Charles.
Could they just start their own production company and continue
to shoot the NBA and have it in Atlanta. Everybody
stays there, you know, I have the crew that stays
and then you outsource that to NBC Dan, I.
Speaker 5 (20:11):
Love that idea. I mean, get creative. You know, we're
we're at a time right now where the talent is
flexing and going independent, following the model set by yourself
years ago and more recently by Pat McAfee and Steven
A with his own production company. So I think it's
a fantastic idea. As a matter of fact, the first
time I heard the idea was from your own producer Paul,
(20:32):
who tweeted it out weeks ago. So I think, if
you know, Sir Charles, does this to your show, should
get a Finders feed.
Speaker 11 (20:38):
Damn.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Okay, So this hasn't been finalized yet, but I'm looking
at the bigger picture with the NBA, with we're going
to have an eighty million dollars a year player by
the year twenty thirty, Shake Gildgess Alexander, by projections, will
top out a eighty one million dollars in his final year.
How is this stainable with players making sixty seventy eighty
(21:03):
million and how long will it be before we have
a one hundred million dollar player.
Speaker 5 (21:09):
I think it's sustainable because you've got these big streaming
companies coming in. Everybody's looking at them. Dan is the
sugar daddies who are going to pay for these, you know,
huge media rights that maybe the traditional broadcasters can't afford anymore.
The NBA is a global league, so it gets global
media rights. I mean, one of the things that people
don't realize about Amazon is Amazon's already in business with
(21:32):
the NBA. They've got the NBA in Brazil, so they
have a relationship that goes back years. So I think
people are trying to bet on these big streamers as
the future sugar daddies of the sport.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
If Charles Barkley becomes a free agent, finish that sentence most.
Speaker 5 (21:52):
Expensive, most sought after free agent and sports television history,
And I'd love to see his LinkedIn profile well because
it should say that the funniest, most entertaining analyst in history.
By the way, it was a great interview, Charles was
off the hook and everybody would go after him. ESPN
has been lusting after the chuckster for twenty years. Amazon
(22:15):
would back up the Bronx truck, NBC. Everybody would want him.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
I wonder though, how his style, what he says, his
opinions would play on ESPN, ABC since they've had a
lot of turmoil at ESPN with people saying things not
being politically correct or going against company policy. Here.
Speaker 5 (22:37):
Yeah, I think Jimmy Petaro is loosening the reins there, Dan.
I mean when I look at some of the things
that McAfee gets away with, I can't believe it. I mean,
he took a shot at Norby. You know Norby here's
one of those powerful guys in sports for forty years.
He took him down on ESPN's own air. I think
you know they've welcomed Charles with open arms. Even Stephen
(22:59):
A on his show last night, he does not want
to see inside the NBA go off the air. It's
just too good.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
How good a month as the WNBA hen fantastic.
Speaker 5 (23:10):
Caitlin Clark has brought all sorts of new viewers' ratings
or up attendances up. And I'll tell you, Dan, what's
really important for the WNBA is the timing of this.
They're also going for their own media deal right now
along with the NBA, So I think Kathy Engelbird is
going to be able to double triple the rights fees
that they used to get because the right speed they're
(23:31):
getting right now frankly or a joke.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
Well also, and I don't know if you can liken this.
I don't know if it's apples to apples. When Gretzky
came to the La Kings, Caitlin Clark going to the WNBA,
it's like now they talk of expansion. Now you have
other cities that say, we'd like to be in the
WNBA business. Just like when Wayne came to the Kings,
there were a lot of cities, you know, your southern
you're Florida teams they wanted to have, you know, hockey
(23:57):
franchises because Wayne Gretzky was you know, in the in
the United States. You're right.
Speaker 5 (24:02):
I mean I was living in LA you know, twenty
thirty years ago when you know, he revolutionized the sport
and all of a sudden, you know, kids who never
heard of hockey, you know, wanted to play ice hockey.
So you're right. One player can have that kind of
seismic impact on a sport in a league, and I
think you're seeing it right now At Caitlin.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
Clark, we've also looked at it and looks like the
commissioner would be toying with if there's an eighteen game schedule.
Then we get to President's weekend, then you get that
holiday off. And we've been saying that for years. It
makes sense. The commissioner says, well, maybe you know a
worried about player safety, let's get rid of a couple
of preseason games and then you could add the eighteenth. Well,
(24:40):
those two aren't connected in my opinion, because the first
two playoff games are preseason games. Your stars don't play,
and you know they try not to play in those games.
It'll have nothing to do with player safety with the players.
You really are counting on an eighteenth game. That to me,
that seems like it's a lot more serious than getting
rid of two pre season games. But you see this
(25:01):
as inevitable. The fact that the commissioner is talking about
this now though, Mike, that's where it feels like, let
me put it out there, let me get the reaction here,
And they usually do that. It's a trial balloon.
Speaker 5 (25:13):
Yeah, I mean, what the NFL wants, the NFL usually gets.
Don It's just the way it is. I mean, look
at the way they just steamrolled in the NBA on
Christmas Day. NBA control Christmas Day. Goodell comes along and says, Nope,
not anymore. Look how they just create rights at of
thin air, like these Netflix game Did you see that?
Then they did hold those games out of somebody's existing package,
(25:36):
sold them to Netflix for one hundred and fifty million
dollars and told their loyal partners, screw you. So what
the NFL wants to get.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
But also if you look at let's say they get
to eighteen games, let's say they push push it back
the Super Bowl. Now, they're going to affect the NBA
All Star Game as well. So if I'm Adam Silver,
I at least place a phone call to the commissioner,
Roger Goodell, and say, Roger, can can we kind of
coexist here without you guys, you know, dominating us taking
away our Christmas Day, now moving our All Star Game.
Speaker 5 (26:08):
But the one good thing is that if that happens, Dan,
the super Bowl might be moved to President's Day weekend
and we could all get a day off after Super
Bowl Sunday. But I think it was Barkley himself who
centered on your show years ago that I think he
was right on the money. He said the NBA should
start on Christmas Day, you know, move the season, try
to you know, avoid the NFL as much as possible,
(26:30):
start the regular season on Christmas Day. And I think
there was a great idea years ago and I think
it still is.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
No, Mike, what Charles is saying is he doesn't work
those first couple of months and he gets to start
on Christmas Day. You got to understand where it's coming from.
Charles doesn't want to work. Hey, why don't we start
on Christmas Day? All right? He doesn't want to work?
Speaker 5 (26:51):
Yeah, yeah, Henry for twenty years right then?
Speaker 2 (26:54):
Oh, I know, I know never had a job. Hey, Mike,
thank you for joining us as always. Great work. That's
Michael McCarthy. He's a senior reporter front office sports. Also
commonness were tuned in sports media. Can you imagine Charles
on the open market what he would get paid now
if he went to the Mothership. See if you're going
(27:15):
to pay him, I think Charles makes what double figures
ten to thirteen million dollars maybe somewhere around there you're
probably I mean, if I'm Charles, I would say, let's
start with Tony Romo money. Let me just start there,
and then you know, I'll be able to be on
(27:35):
different shows for you. You'll be able to monetize that. You know,
I'll be on McAfee. I'll be on you know, Get Up,
First Take, I'll be on the Manning Cat, you know,
whatever you need me to do. Let's start with Tony
Romo money and see where we go from there. And
then he'll be part of the NBA team.
Speaker 12 (27:54):
You know.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
The problem is and I worked on the NBA show
at ESPN and we spent all that time trying to
create what TNT had. And I remember saying in a
meeting with management, we don't have Charles, because this is
before Shack got there. I said, we don't have Charles.
(28:18):
There is no Charles, and you're trying to create something.
And I remember my thought was, can we be sort
of smart, analytical, you know, something different than what TNT
was doing. They're entertaining, you know, sometimes they'll be analytical,
but can we be something different? And you know, it
(28:40):
was a big challenge there. It's still a challenge because
when you see ESPN's NBA show, you immediately go it's
not as good as TNT. Well nothing is. TNT is
going to go down as one of the great great
show shows, not just sports shows of all time. To
do what they do how they do it with the
(29:02):
characters they have there, the consistency they have there, and
they haven't sloughed off. They just won the Sports Emmy.
But you can't create Shack and you can't create like
they're trying to make Draymond Green a personality. All Right,
he's okay, but he's not Shack. He's not Charles. I mean, Kenny,
(29:26):
you can replicate. Ernie is so good at being so subtle.
It is so nuanced. There's nobody like Ernie Johnson. He
does it in a way that he doesn't have to
get his hands dirty. He can kind of create a
little bit of chaos in the sandbox and let Shack
and Charles go at one another. But these are really real,
(29:49):
Like Pardon the Interruption is one of the great shows
of all time. Now it's spawned a lot of debate.
So I have a problem with what Tony and Mike did,
but they do it and they still do great. You know,
Sports Center, when we were there, we changed sportscasting, we
changed how you do a highlight show. You know, those
are shows that will live on forever in people's memory
(30:12):
of those were incredible shows and they're sports shows and
what you know they've done with the TNT show, certainly
what they did with Pardon the Interruption, and even you
know what Sports Center used to be.
Speaker 6 (30:26):
Yeah, yeah, Pauline, like, if you changed any element of
the NBA and T and T, it wouldn't work. I mean,
Barkley is the lynchpin to everything because you don't know
what he's going to say night to night. You never
know what he's going to say.
Speaker 2 (30:38):
If you put Draymond Green in Charles's seat, it's not
the same.
Speaker 6 (30:41):
It's not it's me. It's like and it's apples and oranges.
David Lee, Roth and van Halen when they were at
their peak, they were fantastic. Samy Hagar did a great
job replacing him. It actually probably better than people thought.
It still wasn't van Halen, though, not the Van Halen
people loved. And once you change that lead dog element,
it hurts.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
Yeah, but when do you add somebody to an existing
show and then it becomes better than like usually it's
the original show. Now if you're adding Draymond Green and
you don't have Charles or Shack there, you know, and
Shaq has helped a lot because he's not afraid and
he's a he's a big kid, and he has fun.
(31:19):
He pokes Charles Vice versa Kenny Sandwich in between earning.
I mean, you just and they've had great producers too.
That helps because every day, and let's face it, if
I had to just watch the NBA every day for
my job, I'd go crazy. But they go in there.
(31:44):
There are times when they say this game sucks. You know,
Charles Will said, I don't, I don't, I don't want
to watch this, and they allow them to do this.
If you're the NBA and you're going when you normally
just say, can you act like you're interested? No, That's
why we tune in, because they're honest with us, like, hey,
we got this game. This guy not playing this. This
(32:06):
is gonna be ugly. Yeah, all right, let me take
a break. Last call for phone Calls, What we Learn,
What's in store tomorrow? Back after this, be sure to
catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays
at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio and the iHeartRadio wapp. Last Call for phone Calls,

(32:30):
Dan Patrick takes a gamble. Later on today, we will
tape that right after the show, Shane Irving, Dylan the
graphics guy, and Bad Larry. I am going to encourage
them to come up with a different name for our
gambling show. I did take a gamble by bringing these
knuckleheads in. I think we need to be honest with
America and just say these are the worst gamblers in America.
(32:50):
And maybe that's the name of the podcast that'll be
coming up at danpatrick dot com. Final results of the
poll question sports History what we learned? Scene just brought
up an interesting point with NBC reportedly getting the NBA
and they're thinking of bringing back John Tesh's what is
that Roundball Rock? Todd, what's the name of John Tesh's song?
Speaker 7 (33:13):
I don't know what that's called. I mean you might
be right, yeah, roundball Rock.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
So Roundball Rock? Thank you Tom by John Tesh and
Seatan was saying, you know, John Tesh performs in concert,
and could you imagine that you're watching him at some venue.
Let's say you're a Red Rocks like I'm pretty.
Speaker 7 (33:30):
Sure he has a very famous concert at Red Rocks.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
Okay, yeah, so John Tesh an accomplished musician, and all
of a sudden forty five minutes into the show, he
starts to do the round Ball Rock in concert with
professional musicians.
Speaker 7 (33:45):
This is right, John Tesh is in concert and he's touring.
And you go to a concert, you know, maybe seven
songs into the set, you're waiting, you're applauding, yeah, and
then all of a sudden you hear.
Speaker 2 (34:07):
Go ahead, go ahead, Todd, you've heard of this one encore?
Thank you, Tom, Welcome, Yes well.
Speaker 6 (34:21):
Round Ball Rock by John Tesh was a theme song
for the NBA NBC from nineteen ninety to two thousand
and two. Now it has been licensed out to other
sports properties. I think Fox may have used it first
Football recently, but John Tosh says that he has already
been contacted about it.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
Yeah. I think he was on with LeBatard and he
said that, you know, I was mentioning that there's certain
people who call and they always want to FaceTime, and
Dan Lebotard is one of those guys. And all of
a sudden you'll see that big face, that big head
of his coming up. And then you're like, and I
always say, I don't FaceTime with you, Okay, with my
(34:58):
kids or my granddaughter, not with Dan Levitar So the
one time I FaceTime with Levatar, he's on his couch
in his Miami condo. He's got his shirt off. Oh no,
and I go, what are you doing? It is I'm
facetiming you. I go, you don't have a shirt on.
(35:19):
That's not fair. There should have been a four warning
there with Levitar. Let me see.
Speaker 7 (35:28):
I just can't imagine. It's sitting there, like, oh dude,
they are going to Red Rocks. Is this awesome venue?
And like, yes, he played the NBA on NBC theme. Yes,
there's twenty musicians up there, you know, fifteen violinists, going.
Speaker 16 (35:44):
Fans wearing different NBA jerseys just for that one song
that they.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
Came to sing. This is crazy. But they're gonna do
the extended version, like they're not going to do just
you know, a three minute and twenty two second version.
They're gonna give you like a seven minute one. He's
gonna milk this for all it's worth. No idea song
was this? Are there any lyrics to that? It's just
you're just playing a song. There's no lyrics that John sings.
Speaker 7 (36:05):
Are there any lyrics that any John Tesh song?
Speaker 2 (36:07):
I don't know. I don't know. Wait, John just plays music.
There's no there's no singing.
Speaker 6 (36:14):
It's like a new age concert.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
I think yes times that didn't alloed to get a
skit years ago.
Speaker 3 (36:18):
I forgot who was in it, but I saw it recently.
Speaker 7 (36:20):
Why go, and it's time for some basketball.
Speaker 1 (36:22):
They just got a bit of a.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
Maybe you should do that. Maybe come up with lyrics
a roundball rock?
Speaker 4 (36:29):
How check out some bas.
Speaker 6 (36:34):
There are no no lyrics.
Speaker 7 (36:36):
He's a little bit like a one man Trans Siberian orchestra.
If I'm not mistaken.
Speaker 2 (36:45):
Let's see if there's load management.
Speaker 7 (36:49):
No, it's not for some basketball.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
Again? What see if Kawhi will play again? Are you
hearing it?
Speaker 5 (37:01):
Good?
Speaker 12 (37:01):
Check here?
Speaker 2 (37:05):
What's kicking you in the groin? Tyler in Detroit, Hi Tyler?
Speaker 4 (37:14):
Yeah, just real quick, sameless, thank you and blug for
Dan Fields made Mother's Day super easy. And my dead
mother has reached out to me basically every day since
Mother's Day thanking me for the facial cleaner skin brush thing,
So thank.
Speaker 11 (37:31):
You for that.
Speaker 4 (37:32):
And then I'm also on the way to the airport
right now, and I'm just looking forward to when I
land and get the baggage frame and I see a
seating there, standing there with my name on a on
a on a piece of paper, waiting to hop in Islamo.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
So thank you. Oh okay, okay, see it looks like
a limbo driver, all right, suit and tie. Yeah. Thanks
for the audience participation on this. It was great. Paulie
brought this up earlier. There was a fire in the
parking lot at the Dodgers game. A car was on
and the game was going on, and the organist for
the Dodgers, he decided that he was going to play
(38:08):
a song that would accompany a car that was on
fire at Chevez Ravine. We didn't start the fire.
Speaker 6 (38:30):
Your car is burning a lot.
Speaker 2 (38:31):
See Peter Rule is the name of the organists.
Speaker 16 (38:35):
Yes, Tod, I love the creativity, and of course I
love Jolly Joel, But can you comfortably play that without
knowing the background of what's going on with that fire
and who might be killed or third degree burns or
who knows what's going on there?
Speaker 2 (38:47):
Drowned out Todd, Good evening and welcome to do Dodgers Stadium.
Speaker 7 (38:56):
But if you did it as John Tesh, wouldn't someone
might be dead in car? This might be appropriate.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
That's not what I thought of I thought, Okay, that's
he's having fun with. I mean, you imagine the guy
who's going, hey, tell me, don't you have like a
twenty seventeen Ford Tampa and.
Speaker 1 (39:18):
You're always parking lot deep?
Speaker 4 (39:19):
Which is why right.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
Now, wait, isn't that where we parked? You know it.
Speaker 7 (39:23):
It's a good point by Tad though, that the car
wasn't in a spot. It looked like it was in
like a traveling lane. So that would lead you to
believe that somebody was driving the car and whatever it
was that caused the car to burst into flames, they
probably paid a lot of money as a customization for it.
And then all of a sudden, you're driving to the game.
(39:44):
I would imagine that does it smell like something's burnings?
Speaker 3 (39:49):
Ambulance is rushing to the scene, and you're.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
Yes.
Speaker 6 (39:54):
But if that's the case, it turns out to be bad.
Deeter rule could play like All Apologies by Nerva though,
or some type of ditty that has the word apology.
Speaker 2 (40:04):
Jason in Florida, Hi Jason, what's on your mind? Hey?
Speaker 11 (40:09):
Six foot three fans only for what fetish?
Speaker 2 (40:14):
If? Thank you?
Speaker 11 (40:16):
Just to talk about your.
Speaker 12 (40:18):
MLV segment you guys got to spend about fifty percent
of that time grab as and then laughing to make
the segment good.
Speaker 2 (40:25):
Oh yeah, you're right, fake laughter with the video. Okay,
thank you, Jason. Yeah. We're trying to put together our
Sports Emmy next year, where I think we sample all
the other shows that normally get nominated. I did hear
from Scott van Pelt last night. He goes zero for
eight and I said loser and then he said career
(40:47):
loser and I said, no, You're just a non winner. Scott,
congrats this day in sports history. I just can we
get one just real quick.
Speaker 6 (40:57):
NBA announced the transfer the Philadelphia war Is to San Francisco, California.
Speaker 2 (41:02):
On this date, twenty twenty one. Phil Mickelson remember him,
oldest player to win a major won the PGA Championship, Todd,
what'd you learn today?
Speaker 16 (41:08):
In recent years, Charles Brookley was interviewed for three different
NBA GM jobs.
Speaker 7 (41:12):
Who knew see No Connor Charles Barkley not pleased.
Speaker 2 (41:15):
