what are we going to settle with first hour?

Speaker 4 (01:30):
Well, Paul just sent one over. Better job in professional
sports head coach or a general manager?

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Well, I got a little bit more job security as
a general manager. Yeah, because more and more, sooner than later,
we're blaming the head coach. It just feels like it
used to be that you had stability and you were
you're very prideful that your coach had been there for
a while. Now you can look around the league and
there are a few of these coaches, you know, Tylu

(01:58):
The Clippers just signed him up up making him one
of the highest paid coaches. You have Eric Spolstra, who
might be the best head coach in the NBA. Greg
Popovich still, you know, at an elite level with what
he's done in San Antonio. So you're trying to get stability,
but you can't have stability if you don't have that
at the coaching position. Because a coach comes in, then

(02:21):
he's going to change his offense, change his defense players
he wants in, players that he may not want. Then
you have turnover again. That's why when you look at
success with a lot of players, it's really difficult to
be great if you don't have stability with your head coach.
Let's start with Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City stability. Tom

(02:43):
Brady had that in New England. Stability, Peyton Manning when
he had Tony Dungee in Indianapolis. Stability. Having that is
just such a great advantage, a weapon, because when you
see what happened in Chicago with Justin Field. If you're
going to bring in somebody in a different offensive coordinator,

(03:03):
it's difficult. The job is difficult enough. Now you bring
in somebody who has a different philosophy, and hopefully Caleb
Williams is able to have Matt Eberflus as his head
coach for a while. Now, I don't know if he'll
last that long. Then you have another person coming in
head coach, his philosophy, he likes to do it this

(03:24):
way offensive coordinator. Same thing with managers in baseball, having
that guy, you know, I always love Terry Frankcona because
I just thought he was one of the great managers
in the history of the game, and he managed in
a different style. Then all of a sudden, he's a
players manager. Well they thrive, they survive, They you know,

(03:44):
end up ending the curse, all of the great things
that he did in Boston. But then, well, the players
are taking advantage of it. You know, he's too nice
to him. Now you ship him out to Cleveland, and
he did a wonderful job in Cleveland as well. But
having that person who's always there. If I'm a player,
then I know what he's saying. Now, you can wear
out your welcome. Pat Riley wore out his welcome with

(04:06):
the Lakers. He was very difficult on them, but they
played at a very high level, a championship level. But
after a while, today's player tunes you out. But I
would hope that you get more than one or two years.
But we've seen that with the Lakers you get two years,
the Sons you get one year. JJ Reddick may be
coming in. How many years does he get And you're

(04:29):
looking at the coaching expectancy, your shelf life. It's not long.
It's really difficult to hold onto a job. It feels
like for over a decade in one place. And that's
the problem that we have with a lot of these
athletes is they don't develop correctly because they don't have
that stability. So I'd want to be a GM because

(04:53):
I can hold onto that job. It's like you'd never
blame the GM until he might make a trade. Doesn't
make it trade a bad draft pick. But the coach,
the coach is the one who's going to get blamed
because we see the results. Well, you got to blame him.
He's at the press conference. GM's not always showing up,
you know, his media availability is probably limited for a reason.

(05:14):
But being a GM, yeah, I'm a little bit more secure.
There's some insulation there in the house.

Speaker 5 (05:22):
Yes, Paulie, Well, being a GM, you think you got
all the power, You're in control, You choose the coach.
Do you think anything, any part of it would bother
you that the coach gets all the credit, Like the
Kansasity chiefs Andy Reids, the face beyond the players, the
face of the team, going to the Hall of Fame,
all that stuff. Brett Veach is the GM. If you
don't know a lot about football. You don't know who

(05:42):
he is, and he could walk around casually without being bothered.
Do you think the lack of credit or notoriety would
bother you.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
I'd have to know a case by case situation. I
don't think you could put a blanket over that. And
I don't know if Jerry West it, you know, it
mattered to Jerry being a g that hey, Phil Jackson's
getting all the credit or somebody else is getting all
the credit. I don't know if raht Aarbach when he
became the GM of the Celtics, was bothered that Casey

(06:11):
Jones or Tommy Heinzen was getting more credit there. I
think it'd be a case by kse situation. But you know,
Ron Wolf is a Hall of Fame GM, and I'd
like that. You know, these sports are now expanding who
they consider to be Hall of famers. Ron Wolf's a
Hall of famer. Ret Veach, what he's done in Kansas
City should be considered a Hall of Famer. I don't

(06:34):
know how many gms. Bill Pollyan I think is in
the Hall of Fame as a GM. I don't know
how many gms are in the Hall of Fame. Ron
Wolf I believe is as well. But when you consider
building a team, that's how you build a team, having
a great GM who's able to go. This is how
we're going to do it. These are the players. I
like this player. We're going to sign that player. We're

(06:56):
going to release that player. We'll let Tyreek Hill go
to Miami. We'll bring in some half picks here. Yes see.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
That's why you know when people say winning is hard,
you know, it's like after you've won, sometimes it's the
hardest part because that's when everybody has their hand out
for credit. Yeah, players want money, executives want credit.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
It's the head coach who did it.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
Well, it's really the GM who put the players.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
But the owner is the guy who signs the check.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
So all of a sudden, everybody's like, no, no, no, no, no,
this is the team that I built. I'm the one
who did it. You need the right mix of people
to not do that.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
And there's certain franchises teams where the owners love to
take a victory lap, and some take a victory lap
and they haven't won anything in thirty years. But you know,
Robert Kraft got around to be in a celebrity like
he was all a great owner doesn't get in the way,
you don't hear anything. Then all of a sudden we
go behind the curtain, and all of a sudden we

(07:49):
realized there was some real friction there for over a decade.
And then he's out in front like, hey, Meek mill
is my friend. Hey I'm I'm gonna be at the rows.
I I'm I'm you know, Robert Kraft, me and Meek. Yes,
the fanatics, white party, Yeah, everybody's in all white.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
And yes, me too.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
But you do have owners who do like that credit.
You know, Mark Cuban's always their courtside. Yeah, you know,
he's he's there and he'll take a victory lap. But
I think that's also interesting as well. Certain franchises don't
do that now. The Steeler organization, it's not like they're
taking victory laps. The Giants organization when they were winning.

(08:30):
You know, certain organizations like they keep it this is
my job, this is what I do. And if a
coach gets out there, I still go back to one
of the stranger moments I had. There was a trophy
ceremony when the Spurs won the Western Conference finals. Tim
Duncan was there and they were going to go play
in the NBA Finals, and I remember Popovich wanted nothing

(08:52):
to do with the trophy ceremony. Nothing, And you know,
I'm hosting it. I'm trying to get him to come up.
He's like, nope, it's about them. Didn't want any credit.
I mean, he's still one of the more elusive coaches
that I've ever been involved with in you know, forty years.
He just doesn't. He doesn't care. You know, it's not
his job. He doesn't. He's not there to sell anything.

(09:15):
But he's also not saying, hey, what about me, I'm
a I'm a pretty good coach here. Yeah, Paul, he
wanted to worry about any trophy or not.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Wow, he's snarky. He can take can take it all right,
So he he didn't want to go up. So we're
never getting great Baba Vinron for sure. Doubly. Yeah, man, Okay,
if he had the over under at ten minutes for snark,
it's right at ten minutes. In about fifteen seconds, he
dishes it out. Yeah he does. He editioned it out.

(09:46):
I thank god it was never a sideline reporter coach.
What do you think of their Amanda Man defense, because
you know he would have just seen you and just
licking his job. Oh yeah, absolutely, he would have immediately.
Oh yeah, okay, both barrels, Patrick, Yeah, let me hear.
How great a shooter you are? Okay talking hair do?

(10:07):
Yeah yeah, which is a sign of respect.

Speaker 4 (10:10):
If he's gonna crap on you, yeah, I guess maybe,
unless they do it on live TV, then it's not
that's not true.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
It's not fun. He has, Paul.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
If you had to be any GM all time, it's
got to be theo Epstein. Right, you got titles with
the Red Sox and a title with the Cubs.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
That's a that's the walk off.

Speaker 5 (10:28):
I mean, well, unless he joins the Cleveland Indians or
whatever they're called these days and gets one there, that's unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
Well, I'd say Jerry West and Red Arbach with what
they did, Jerry did two franchises. Yeah, but I would
say with Jerry Man, that's he had pretty good run
there and read what he did. I mean like, there's
certain guys if they called, I wouldn't pick up the
foot I would tell my secretary if you get a

(10:56):
Boston area code or an LA area code, don't pickup
because if it's Jerry west Or Red Arbanc I'm gonna
get fleeced. I don't know how, but somehow I'm gonna
get fleeced. Uh yeah, line one, mister Arbach. I'm not
I'm not here.

Speaker 6 (11:13):
No, no, no, yes, Mark, these days, Sam Presty seems
like that guy where he's a really famous GM for sure.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yeah, but he's just gotten draft picks. Now. I got
the Shay Gilgis Alexander trade with you know, Paul George
and got draft picks there. He just came out and
admit it. He never should have brought in Gordon Hayward.

Speaker 4 (11:34):
I was just gonna say, a man of kind. I've
been meaning to bring that up. Yes, Gordon Hayward, Sam
Presty thing is so interesting port you know Gordon Hayward.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
He's like, hey, I'm trending what happened.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
Uh yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
The GM said that he made a mistake bringing you
into Oklahoma City.

Speaker 4 (11:49):
Well he hasn't exactly been shy either about like, you know,
this isn't what I thought it was gonna be. I've
he's been very vocal about coming here with a mistake
because I thought I was going to be you know,
a piece of the puzzle. But what was the quote
he had like this train's already moving and it's like
hard to jump on.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
See.

Speaker 4 (12:06):
He said something like that. How often do you get
a player being like this was a mistake and the
GM being like, yeah, yeah, it was no offense, but yeah, yeah, yes.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Huh.

Speaker 7 (12:16):
Can't you allude on either side of that to poor
decisions without actually saying somebody by name? You know, I'm
sure everybody could figure it out, especially someone that covers
the team regularly, but you have to actually say the person.
I just don't think that's necessary.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Thank you, ton, I thought it was great.

Speaker 4 (12:30):
I mean when the person themselves is the one talking
about it first.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
Yeah, you're acknowledging it, you're co signing on it, like, hey,
Gordon's right, man, I never should have brought him in.
It was the wrong situation for him, and it isn't.

Speaker 4 (12:42):
I don't think that they didn't get the sense they
were doing it like to be rude or anything.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
They were like, hey, you know what are bad?

Speaker 4 (12:48):
Like he's a good player and he deserves to play more,
but we just don't have space for him.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
Yes.

Speaker 5 (12:52):
Paul Gordon Hayward this year with Oklahoma City averaged five
point five points per game and limited action and made
third three million.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
Yeah no, yeh a boy. Yeah, but you can't look
at salaries anymore in the NBA because everybody makes, you know,
twenty five thirty million. I mean you do get some
guys that I'll see, Oh, hes signed a two year
deal for ten million dollars. I go ten million dollars
each season? No, no, total attention. I'm like, wow, what's

(13:21):
it like to go into the locker room and you
got somebody who's making you know, ten million first half
of the season, no, first month of the season, and
then you're making ten million over two years. Just the
disparity sometimes in these contracts is crazy.

Speaker 6 (13:36):
Yes, Mark, in your experience, have you ever seen teams
that play a certain guy that's not as good as
somebody else but they have to because of the contracts.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
Yes, or because they drafted somebody high. That's happened many
many times. And players know, players know before anybody else
knows if somebody can play. And that's where it's frustrating,
because you have players that, hey, I'm better than that guy,
but they got to save face by playing that guy

(14:04):
because they took him with a first round draft pick. Weird.
What other pole questions are you thinking? By the way,
ninety nine days until opening night of the NFL, we
will look at some of the interesting contract situations that
are gonna happen this year. All right, see what else
do you? Well? I have some poll questions off of
the contract situation. Okay, well, why didn't you hold that?

Speaker 3 (14:27):
Save Ben?

Speaker 2 (14:29):
Save it? Anything else?

Speaker 4 (14:32):
I have a more likely this NFL season dot dot
dot pole question.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
Let's save that save it?

Speaker 4 (14:38):
You know what I was actually gonna We sort of
threw it in last minute, but I'm gonna put up
Lebron James most involved in JJ Reddick getting the Lakers
job or his son getting drafted.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
We didn't give that enough du Yes, Oh okay.

Speaker 3 (14:50):
That's that.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
One's a lot of fun too. Okay, so we're gonna
start with a couple for hour one, but you could
also do over or Interesting Minnesota Dallas tonight? Is it
over or is it just getting interesting? Fire? I think
it's just getting interesting. Here's something for you. Anthony Edwards
is the key to the Timberwolves. But so far in

(15:14):
the playoffs, the Timberwolves are seven and one. When this
player scores at least eighteen points they're two and five
when he doesn't. If you said Karl Anthony Towns, you
would be correct.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
Changing the game.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
He he is changing the game. The best shooting big
man of all time. According to Karl Anthony Towns, what.

Speaker 8 (15:39):
Stell of a day, stall a day, Stata a day,
Stanta day. This is the style of the day.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
In case you're wondering what's the over under, Carl Anthony
Towns points tonight, Well that for you coming up after
the break? Come on, can't well after the break? Good
back after this.

Speaker 2 (16:50):
Tyler the operator standing by actually sitting by to take
your phone calls. Settle on a pull question I mentioned
before the commercial break the Mams and the Timberwolves tonight,
the MAVs are getting five and the uh I guess
the X factors so far from Minnesota in the playoffs
has been Karl Anthony Towns. When he scores at least eighteen,

(17:11):
the Timberwolves are seven and one. They are two and
five when he doesn't. So I pose the question and
made you wait over under. According to DraftKings, Karl Anthony
Towns points tonight, Marvin, I'm gonna start with you.

Speaker 3 (17:27):
Nineteen and a half.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
Oh blue, bloop bloop, here we go.

Speaker 3 (17:30):
Let's go cat game change.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
Yeah, all right, he's gonna get to nineteen points and
then they're gonna win the game because they get to
nineteen points and he wins the game.

Speaker 4 (17:40):
Is that in five minutes when he gets hot? Or
is that just over the hole?

Speaker 2 (17:43):
I always like these stats. You can use them and
cannot You can manipulate them. When somebody goes, oh, when
such and such rushes for one hundred yards, you know
they're seventeen and two. All right, So if you get
one hundred yards, but you throw five interceptions. You still
ran for one hundred yards, but you didn't win the game.
You can make stats work for you, positively or negatively.

(18:06):
If if you're Dallas, you go, oh my god, we
can't let Cat get to nineteen points or twenty points.
We're going to lose. What if Anthony Edwards lays an
egg here, Hey, but Cat had his nineteen points last game,
I said, take the over of his twenty and a half,
and he had twenty five. This time around, I'm going
nineteen for Cat, and then we'll see if they continue

(18:30):
this trend here, Yes, Dodd.

Speaker 7 (18:32):
I'm gonna say twenty one and a loss. Okay, he'll
get the over, but it's gonna do away with that
stat a.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
Little bit, all right, thank you, buzzkill. Anthony Edwards over
under tonight Marvin.

Speaker 6 (18:46):
Twenty four and a half, Paul twenty six and a half,
Todd twenty eight and a half.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
Blop bloop. How about Luca dounch Seaton thirty one and
a half Marvin.

Speaker 3 (18:59):
Thirty and a half bloop bloop?

Speaker 2 (19:01):
Okay, how about Kyrie Irving over under Paul twenty four.

Speaker 4 (19:08):
And a half Todd twenty five and a half, Seat
twenty seven and a half, Marv.

Speaker 3 (19:13):
Twenty three and a half.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
Blooh, Marv, did you get all of them? Uh? I
think all the ones that I asked him about. Well done, congratulations,
come on, we're here. Yeah, take the rest of the
day off. I'm as stay guys, oh you are. Look
if I give my wizard tyths back, that's still one
of the more memorable moments here. Like when it comes

(19:34):
to most Valuable Danette, We're gonna remember you got your
wisdom teeth out and then came back the same day.

Speaker 6 (19:40):
I might even sure if I'm most valuable, but Dody,
I mean, somebody's gonna have to do something, so lose
a leg.

Speaker 2 (19:47):
So Danet of the Year is different than the Most
Valuable Dannet.

Speaker 3 (19:51):
It's like Offensive Player of the Year and MVP.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
Okay, are you are you Christian McCaffrey or are you
gonna be Lamar Jackson?

Speaker 6 (20:00):
I think Christian McCaffrey because I'm a piece of an
already stacked team.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
Okay.

Speaker 6 (20:05):
Lamar Jackson does so much okay, and it's like, oh,
if we don't have him, I'm not sure if the
show survives.

Speaker 3 (20:12):
The show can survive without me?

Speaker 2 (20:13):
Okay, all right, we have our poll questions seating. Yeah,
we got three of them, three of them up there,
all right, all right, I like that. So ninety nine
days until the opening night of the NFL, and I
was wondering, shouldn't we have some NFL music here in Marvin?
We haven't been ready?

Speaker 3 (20:32):
No, ready, come on?

Speaker 2 (20:33):
Okay, there it is Janet of the Year. Okay, okay,
So ninety nine days most interesting person, Most interesting team poll.

Speaker 5 (20:48):
I'll go with the LA Chargers based off their news style.
Does Justin Herbert play better with drastically reduced workload?

Speaker 2 (20:57):
Right?

Speaker 3 (20:58):
Like?

Speaker 2 (20:58):
Does he become a tray been in the next couple
of years? Okay? Is is that your team? Therefore? Are
you picking Jim Harball as your most interesting person the
entire concept of the okay? Okay, So who's the most
interesting person ninety nine days out? Yeah, Herbert Herbert? Okay,
Herbert and Slash the Chargers Okay, Marvin. Most interesting person,

(21:24):
Most interesting team ninety nine days out.

Speaker 6 (21:26):
Most interesting person, I'm gonna say Caleb Williams number one.
Pick a lot of hype around him, okay, and then
most interesting team. I'm sorry the Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (21:41):
Okay, they're really good.

Speaker 3 (21:43):
I can't think of another team.

Speaker 2 (21:45):
There's thirty one others. There's literally thirty one others.

Speaker 3 (21:49):
Yeah, but but you asked me.

Speaker 2 (21:51):
Yeah, Paulie, you had your opinion, all right, Seaton, Most
interesting person, interesting team.

Speaker 4 (22:02):
Most interesting person might be Caleb Williams. Okay, which might
make the Bears the most interesting team. However, I'm gonna
say the Dolphins are actually super interesting.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
Okay. Now, Pro Football Focus doesn't think highly of the Bears.
I think they have them as the twentieth best team,
which is fair. I mean, yeah, but I think they're
I think they're on the right on the cusp of
being a playoff team. So i'd have them a little
bit higher. Yeah, more likely to happen this season, right.

(22:36):
The Chiefs three peet the Bears make the playoffs. Ooh yeah,
I'll just drop that on you. I don't care. Dang,
We're thirty minutes into the show. My goal question, ninety
nine days out, we're in mid season.

Speaker 4 (22:48):
Four yes, Chiefs three peat, Bears make the playoffs. You
have to bet a week's pay, a week's pay.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
I'm going to go. The Bears make the playoffs. Dang,
how about that? All right? Yeah, Todd, most interesting person,
most interesting team.

Speaker 7 (23:09):
My most interesting person would be Aaron Rodgers. I want
to see if this is going to be a disaster
or he's going to be able to bounce back in
the quot will be able to hold up. And I
want to know if the Houston Texans are that much
for real or did they just have a great season
last year?

Speaker 3 (23:22):
Can they build upon which?

Speaker 2 (23:23):
Twenty three one kurrent owner hall of Fame quarterback was
on a show and he said, Aaron Rodgers winning another
title would kind of change his place in history. Well,
that would be two titles, and there are a few
quarterbacks who have at least two titles. But winning with
the Jets will be the difference because Joe Namath wasn't

(23:47):
a Hall of Fame quarterback, but he did something Hall
of Fame worthy by leading the Jets to the biggest
upset in Super Bowl history and it helped lead to
the merger of the AFL. In the NFL, Joe's statistics
career wise, he threw more interceptions than touchdowns, but he
won a Super Bowl with the Jets and he guaranteed

(24:07):
they were going to beat the Baltimore Colts, and that's
how he ended up with a Hall of Fame resume,
Aaron Rodgers. You do it with the Packers, very popular team,
and then you do it with the Jets against all odds.
It feels like everything that's gone on up to this point.
But to be able to do that, that puts him

(24:27):
over Drew Brees. That'll put him over Peyton Manning, put
him over Brett Favre. I mean, we got a long
way to go. But if you start to look at
what that what that other super Bowl would mean, it'd
be pretty big. It's more than just one super Bowl.
It was you won a super Bowl with the Jets.
Degree of difficulty, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (24:48):
Pauline, I got a bonus one here for the room. Okay,
more interesting awkward quarterback situation Pittsburgh Steelers Atlanta Falcons both awkward.

Speaker 2 (25:00):
Well, it feels like Justin Fields is in the on
deck circle. So Russ is playing, he's at the plate,
and you got Justin Fields there. Just loosen it up
just in case Russ has some issues there. I would
I would say that's more awkward because that seems more
immediate that Justin Fields could get in a game. I

(25:20):
don't know if you know, we're going to see Michael
Pennix Junior the third, But then I got it. I'm
assuming that Kirk d. Cousins is going to be healthy
to be able to start the season. And even when
he was on with us a couple of weeks ago,
he said if the super Bowl was played that day,
he would play in the super Bowl. It's rarely played

(25:41):
in May, it is, right, But you know what, when
the NFL starts expanding, you know, all of a suddenly
about two years away. Wait, super Bowl's on Memorial Day's Day.
Let's get the flyovers going. We've been watching the rears
on the NFL network since there's nothing else on the
NFL network, all the re airs of Super Bowls, and

(26:02):
you could go back to the first time they played
a game in February and John Madden's like football in
February groundbreaking, and it was. Now we're looking at President's
Day weekend that we're eventually going to get there with
eighteen games. Now, can you stretch it any further? I
guess anything's possible because we're going to get to eighteen games.

(26:25):
Get to eighteen games now, all of a sudden, President's
day weekend. Now everybody has the built in day off,
which is what we've spoken about for years now, and
I think that's eventually going to happen. The NFL. If
they want to give you a month, that's usually that's
their charity donation to the rest of sports because they've

(26:46):
taken up pretty much every month possible. Now everybody knows
that ratings are attached to when you talk about the NFL,
you know, the highest rated shows on any network, it
comes down to football. So you know that if you
put up a you know, a topic bar Dak Prescott,
you know, contract, then people will be like, oh, okay,

(27:07):
what are they going to say about that? And I
think when you start to look at is there a
month that the NFL has said, well, let the other
sports have that? Would it be May or June? Maybe
maybe two months and that's about it. I mean you
have OTAs and there was you know, there was a
lot of stories generated the last week or so. It

(27:30):
feels like maybe June is the the one month that
they go, all right, guys, divvy it up. We'll let
you guys do play in June. NBA Stanley Cup Final, golf.
Is there another major there what else. Baseball doesn't really
mean anything in June?

Speaker 7 (27:50):
Yes, Ton, can college basketball have its March madness without
worrying about the NFL inch and closer to Leafebruary into
early Marching.

Speaker 2 (27:57):
It's getting close. I mean it really is. You know.
You just start to look at they can expand as
much as they want to, and they're doing that, and
you had an eighteenth game. Now all of a sudden,
super Bowls backed up again, and here we are playing
football on President's Day weekend. Yes, Paul.

Speaker 5 (28:15):
The first thirty seven Super Bowls were played in January.
The earliest one was Super Bowl eleven January ninth, nineteen
seventy seven. Then they expanded the season. Then the Super
Bowls all were always in the back half of January.
Super Bowl thirty eight, February first four, Reliant down in Houston.
We were there for that New England versus Carolina.

Speaker 2 (28:36):
The past was that the Janet Jackson one. Yeah, yep.

Speaker 5 (28:40):
The past three Super Bowls February thirteenth, February twelfth, February eleventh.
So looking at the calendar, if they expand eighteen games,
the Super Bowl could be played as late as February
twenty first.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
Yeah, and then you know you, you turn around and
you're gonna have the draft coming up after that. Maybe
it's free agency. Just feels like they own the calendar. Yeah,
we'll give you June. Have fun with it, but then
we're back in July. Okay. Some of the other things

(29:17):
to keep an eye on, ninety nine days out. Some
contracts here, Ceed Lamb, Micah Parsons, Dak Prescott. We talked
about this last year. I don't know if it was
in the middle of the season or late in the season.
I said, the Cowboy's got a problem coming up? Can
they sign all these players? You know what Dak's gonna

(29:38):
cost you, Ceed Lamb, He's probably gonna want what, you know,
close to what Justin Jefferson's getting. He's gonna want at
least twenty five million. Michael Parson's probably gonna want, you
know what. TJ. Watt's getting, gonna want thirty million dollars.
And it just feels like it's not a make or
break for the Cowboys. It feels like every year's make

(29:58):
or break. But if you can't win this year with them,
can you bring everybody back? But those are things that
and I think Zach Martin they're aging offensive lineman. They're
probably gonna let him go. But you got to his
situation with the Miami Dolphins, what do you do with him?
I'd make him, you know, play it out. Brandon Ayuk

(30:19):
with the Niners, T Higgins with the Bengals. Feels like
these wide receivers are all kind of looking around, going, uh,
all right, who's going to be first here? What are
you going to get? I mean, Justin Jefferson hasn't signed,
and I thought they were gonna give him thirty million dollars.
He might be looking around going, okay, I'm gonna get thirty?
Am I going to get? How many touches am I

(30:40):
going to get? Because I got a rookie quarterback in
JJ McCarthy. At least with Kirk Cousins, I knew I
was going to get somebody who was ready to play
right now. Jordan Love with the Packers, he is okay,
he's gonna make eleven million dollars. That's one million dollars,
one million dollars more than Sam Darnold is going to make.

(31:05):
Cam Hayward with the Steelers their defensive tackle. Trevor Lawrence
with Jacksonville's another contract. Mary Cooper with the Browns. So
those are those are ten contracts here that are kind
of hanging in the balance here with do you get
it done prior to the start, do you get it
done during the season, or do you make them play

(31:27):
it out? Yeah, Pauline, if.

Speaker 5 (31:29):
You were Justin Jefferson, would you almost want to wait
to sign a contract to see if your new quarterback's
any good?

Speaker 3 (31:36):
No?

Speaker 2 (31:37):
You just take it, Yeah, deal with it.

Speaker 5 (31:38):
Yeah, man, I know you want the money as fast
as possible.

Speaker 2 (31:42):
I don't think he's going to start right. But either
way you're saying I got Sam Darnold as my quarterback.

Speaker 5 (31:48):
You're tying your next five years of your career to
the quarterback situation.

Speaker 2 (31:51):
A say, but now, I okay, I don't know if
it changes anything. I don't know if we all of
a sudden go yeah. So maybe Justin Jefferson's not that great. No,
he is. He's the best receiver in the game. But
at age twenty five, you're waiting for JJ McCarthy to mature.
I'd probably just take the money thirty million or whatever

(32:15):
you know he's looking for. But I don't know if
i'd go I mean, either way, he's gonna have JJ
McCarthy as his quarterback if he if he has seen
enough of him where he'll go, okay, alright, I like this,
you know, or he might go, oh boy, he's got
a couple of years here, I got Sam Darnold. But

(32:36):
you know it's gonna be thirty million dollars. You know,
defensive players getting thirty million dollars. Quarterbacks are going to
get sixty million dollars. That's the going rate. Amazing, Yeah, Pauline,
final question the segment.

Speaker 5 (32:50):
Okay, if they're both the same price, five year deal,
Justin Jefferson or Micah Parsons.

Speaker 2 (32:56):
I would take Michael Parsons. There's very few Michael Parsons.
There's a lot of really really good receivers. Now they're
not Justin Jefferson, but I think that the separation between
Justin Jefferson and other like Jamar Chase can be just
as good. I mean, there's good receivers, and you just

(33:16):
had an influx of receivers in the NFL. There aren't
many guys where you go. Man, he reminds me of
Lawrence Taylor, and that's MICHAEH. Parsons. So I would say
Michael Parsons, I'd rather have him.

Speaker 3 (33:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (33:29):
Now, if you're the Cowboys, are you like looking at
CD Lamb and then sort of like out of the
side of your eye looking at Justin Jefferson, like.

Speaker 2 (33:37):
Who do we want here? C? D Lamb though, was
gonna get paid? Meanwhile? T Higgins is like, yeah, yeah,
don't forget about me. Hey, I'm the other guy with
the Bengals. Yeah, all right, let me take a break.
Got our play of the day coming up. We'll get
phone calls as well. Ninety nine days or nights until
opening night in the NFL.

Speaker 1 (33:56):
Back after this, be sure to catch the live edition
of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern
six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio wapp.

Speaker 5 (34:08):
Oh My God.

Speaker 2 (34:11):
Of the Day counter WEBSI got up. Play is the
play of the day. Check this out blocked it front
and it's Connor Brown two on one, short handed Brown
in over the line, left wing centers, what.

Speaker 10 (34:24):
Timer story, Mark's stived edit ten, It's first great two
nice call there.

Speaker 2 (34:35):
Boiler's Radio network Edmondston has killed off all six penalties
in the series, so that's twenty three consecutive penalties. This
postseason that they've killed off. That's your play of the day.
Brought to you by tire ranc dot com, the official

(34:56):
Decision Guy. Full lineup of Hankook Tires, special offers, free
road hazard protection, mobile tire installation, tyrack dot com The
way tire buying should be Yes, Paul.

Speaker 5 (35:06):
I know very little about the specifics of different lines
in hockey, but the penalty kill lines might be the
toughest dudes in hockey. There's guys last night, I don't
remember his name. Every time there was a slapper from
like far, he would like lay his body down to
block it.

Speaker 2 (35:19):
They had to write angle. That's that's a commitment. Yeah,
and it seems like we only talk about you when
they score, you know, against you, instead of a you
killed the penalty. Yeah. It's nice, all right, but being
down in front of a slapshot though. Yeah. So the
Oilers rallied from two goal deficit. They scored five undred
answered goals. Here you got two series that feels like

(35:40):
they're both going to seven games. You could have the
NBA the postseason that you know is going to be
on hold here for what seven days? If Dallas happens
to win tonight, what would you do in the interim here?
How about good idea, bad idea?

Speaker 5 (35:59):
Paul, Here you go and I'll give you the idea.
If the NFL has a long NBA has a long
stretch where they're off. Remember that show you hosted years
ago at ESPN, whereas you and a former player and
you looked at the NBA finals, was like, remember that
look back show?

Speaker 2 (36:14):
That was NBA entertainment and entertainment That wasn't ESPN, No,
but it was a good show. That was the one
I did. It was NBA's greatest games.

Speaker 5 (36:20):
Okay, it's a kind of a version of this. So
you have eight or nine days or six or seven days.
What if you went back and gathered players from different
NBA finals and had a viewing party. So you get
a couple players they are obviously not in the playoffs anymore.
You went back and looked, you did a one hour
show where you play Game seven of the finals and
you have players sitting around like live discussing what happened.

Speaker 2 (36:43):
In the moment.

Speaker 5 (36:44):
So let's say it was the twenty sixteen NBA Finals
Cavs beat the Warriors in seven. You have a rewatching game,
and of course you want Lebron's Steph Clay, Igodala, Kevin Love,
Richard Jefferson, Harrison Barnes. You get any of those guys
who would participate either in per via zoom and you
use that to fill the void of the next week.

(37:04):
It'd be a good show and you could do that
show forever. The twenty ten Lakers Celtics do a rewatch
show with Pau Gasol, run Our Test, Eric Fisher, Camer Garnett,
Rajon Rondo.

Speaker 2 (37:15):
I would not do it live. I'd do it taped
because I would want to make sure production value was
going to be high quality there sure, and we were
going to get the right people. And then if you
don't want to have too many, you have to have
maybe two from each team if you can, or you
have a coach former coach there. That would be fun
as well. But when I did the NBA's Greatest Games,

(37:38):
we would always have a player who came in and
we look back on a championship series and it would
be one game and I had Bill Walton who was
in there. We had a lot of players who came
through there, and we would just single out one game
and just to break it down, what was the thought

(37:58):
going into the game when that played was made or
you know when you ended up winning. And NBA Entertainment
did a wonderful job at that.

Speaker 6 (38:05):
Yes, Mark, you had the Isaiah Thomas game, sixth game
with the ankle. He got emotional, had it on VHS.
My mom recorded for me and it was one of
those things where I never even heard of it until
I watched that show with you and Isaiah Thomas where
he talks about, you know, what was going through his head?
Is going twenty five points on a bad ankle?

Speaker 1 (38:22):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (38:23):
And you know it does it allows these guys in
the moment, it's different when they look back on it,
and you know, stories come to mind. But also you
have these guys who were there doing it. Now they
kind of look back and go, gosh, I was so young.
Now I'm out of the game, and you can see
different emotions that you have there. You know when Bird

(38:45):
stole the ball from the inbounds pass with Isaiah, just
that alone, that whole you know, time period that you
had in that game. The Pistons were winning that game,
they were going to eliminate the Celtics, and Bird gets
the ball, not only gets a steal, but also the
presence of mind for him to look and Dennis Johnson's

(39:08):
cutting to the hoop, and it's you know, there's so
many plays, so many moments in there where you go, Okay,
maybe the slowest guy on the floor just intercepted the
inbounds pass, and then Bird has the presence of mind
to turn, but Dennis Johnson has the presence of mind
to be cutting to the hoop, and it's just it

(39:28):
says so much about those two Hall of Fame players
and having been at that series, and then you had
the Dennis Rodman comments about Bird if he was black,
he'd be just another player. Isaiah kind of co signed
on that. You know, the Celtics are getting ready to
play the Lakers. You have to have a press conference
and Larry has to come out basically saying, you know,

(39:50):
I don't care what they say. You know, he didn't.
It was so awkward. He comes out and he's like, Okay, hey,
I'm white and if they think to be just another player,
that's their opinion. Like he didn't care. He just beat him.
That's all he cared about.

Speaker 5 (40:06):
Yeah, Paul, so I think we should bring back a
hybrid of these two shows. Imagine you could even host
it and you bring back you know.

Speaker 2 (40:12):
I don't think the Mothership would let me host.

Speaker 5 (40:14):
We'll talk to NBA Film, NBA TV and you know,
get Kevin Garnett and Andre Gadala talking about the block
by you know, Paul Gas, I'll talk about Kobe Bryant
in the NBA Finals.

Speaker 2 (40:24):
It's almost like, a I don't Fondrea Goudonald wants talk
about the block by Lebron, But that would be Hey, Andre,
tell us again about putting it up and not really
seeing Lebron coming out of nowhere to block it. That
would make the show awkward. And Austin Yeah, yeah, it'd
be like, yeah, I didn't see him. Yeah, but you know,
talk a little bit more about it. You know, I
still love that some of the you know, the greatest players,

(40:46):
greatest scores in the history of the game. We remember,
if I say five plays from Michael Jordan. One of
those plays is the steal against Karl Malone that led
to the game winning shot when they beat Utah. Larry
Bird had this steal against Isaiah Lebron greatest score of
all time. One of the five plays that stand out,

(41:07):
the block against Andrea Ugudala. All right, coming up next hour,
our good buddy from TNT, Adam Lefko, more of your
phone calls. Is well, just getting started here on this Thursday,
hour one safely in the books. Hour two on the
horizon right after this
