Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Man, I love when friends or colleagues are listening. General
So's chicken is named for so sung tongue, now usually
transliterated as well. I'm not even gonna try with that one,
a formidable nineteenth century general who is said to have

(00:26):
enjoyed eating it. Via NPR via My Ross Tucker Podcast
producer Jack Connell. Thank you Jack for listening or watching
on Peacock. Speaking of food, before we get into the
NBA stuff, we got to ask Chris Mannix, who does
an absolutely terrific job covering the NBA and has for

(00:47):
a long time. You can check him out on social
media at SI Chris Mannix obviously doing it for Sports
Illustrated for a long time at this point, Chris, always
good to talk with you, man, Always good to see you.
We're starting the show talking about food, of course, because
it's a meat Friday. We got Darren Ravella on a
little bit later in the show to talk about the

(01:08):
hot dog eating contest. Let's say you had to be
in an eating contest and your life depended on it.
You had to win, you had to be a top
five or whatever. What food would you pick Chris compared
to other normal people.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
I mean, the short answer is pizza, because I could
go through a large pie faster I think anybody I know.
The more granular answer is the buffalo chicken sandwich from
the Fours in Boston. The fors is a kind of
famous sports bar in the Boston area, and at one

(01:47):
point when I was living around there, I would eat
probably three or four of those a week.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
It's actually called the Doug Flutie in Boston.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
It's named for, of course, the great XBC quarterback, and
I could probably hoover that in about fifteen seconds.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
I actually actually just thought of something about these eating contests.
Would you have a couple beers ahead of time? Because
after I've had a couple of beers and I'm hungry,
I can eat like an absolute ravishing mad ma, So
it fills up your stomach a little bit. But man,
when you're hungry, you've had you've been drinking for a
couple hours, you can really eat. Thoughts, Yeah, but.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
I don't think that helps you in the moment, right, Like,
you get hungry after you know, eight to ten beers
and you get home, and the idea of ordering like
a whopper sounds like a good one. In the moment, though,
You're just adding stuff to your stomach, so the only
thing I'd want is a little bit of water to
help wash that down.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
All right, let's get into the NBA stuff. Chris, thank
you by the way for humoring me. There. I like it.
Let's start with I guess the question in my mind,
which is are the Celtics just this good or are
the Mavericks kind of choking a little bit here in
the finals.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
I think it's more about the Celtics being this good,
I mean, going on a twelve and two run during
the conference playoffs, up three to nothing in this round.
You have to start with just how good they are.
They were, you know, historically good in some ways during
the regular season.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
Their point differential was fantastic.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Their offense was you know, clicking at you know, in
some areas all time great rate. They were the most
prolific three point shooting team in the NBA. They were
just I think it was a fraction of a percentage
from being the number one team in efficiency in that
area as well. They are great. They've got great offensive players,
they've got elite wing defenders. You really have to to

(03:45):
go deep into the Celtics bench to find any real
areas of weakness. And on top of all that, like
they've got the experience that comes with kind of you know,
going through the highs and lows of being a contender
in recent years in the finals two years ago, they
lost in the conference finals.

Speaker 4 (04:03):
Last year.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
They're kind of the the perfect combination of when talent
and opportunity and preparation kind of meet each other at
one point.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
How sustainable is this christ Like, I don't know all
their contracts and what they've got for next year. I mean,
is this a group that's going to be able to
stay together the next few years?

Speaker 3 (04:23):
So the NBA has done a fantastic job of trying
to legislate dynasties out of the sport. Like, you know,
dynasties over the last twenty years have been fun to
talk about.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Whether it's the Lakers dynasty in the early.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
Two thousands, San Antonio had one that spread out over
twelve to fourteen years, Miami was a mini dynasty, most
recently Golden State. They make for great TV ratings, but
the NBA doesn't love them because the NBA, you know,
really going back to the days of David Stern as commissioner,
has sought NFL style parody. And look, this year is

(05:04):
going to be the sixth year in a row there
has been a new NBA champion crowned, and that's what
the NBA loves like. They want new faces, new teams
in the finals every single year. All that being said,
the Celtics are as equipped as any team in recent
memory to run off two, maybe three championships.

Speaker 4 (05:24):
They're stars.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown are under contract for the
long term. Jalen Brown just signed what was the richest
contract in NBA history last summer, and Jason Tatum is
about to sign what's going to be the richest contract
in NBA history this summer. Drew Holliday has an extension,
Christaps porzingis got an extension. Derek White's the one guy

(05:46):
who's only got one year left on his contract. But
if the Celtics win a championship, there's no doubt in
my mind that Wick grouse Beck and ownership in Boston
is going to extend him as well. So you've got
a bunch of guys in their twenty and early thirties, Yeah,
you gotta worry about Al Horford, who's thirty eight years old,
and how.

Speaker 4 (06:04):
Long he can go.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
But this is a window Russ that I think is
open for two or three more years.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Let's look at the other side of it, which is
Luka Doncik and the MAVs and Kyrie. What's going on here?
And do you think that the critique of Luca has
gone a little bit too far?

Speaker 1 (06:22):
No, I don't.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
And look during Game three, I was on social media
tweeting that, you know, as great as Luca is on
the other end of the floor, defensively, it's oftentimes like
playing five on four, like he's just not engaged on
that end. And what the Celtics are doing, which very
few of the Western Conference contenders did, is they're attacking him.

(06:46):
Like you watch these games and they're putting Luca in
a whole lot of actions, making him defend on that
end of the floor.

Speaker 4 (06:52):
They're doing the same thing to Kyrie Irving.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
But I think Irving's having a little more success defensively Lucas.
It's just there's just not a lot of effort on
that end of the floor. And you can say, look,
he's been banged up, he assumes a lot of the
offensive burden.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
But in order for Dallas to be a.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
Consistent championship contender, in order for them to even win
a championship over the next four or five years, Luca
has got to become more of a two way player.
He doesn't have to become a defensive stopper, but he
can't be a defensive liability, which he is right now.
Now beyond Luca, there are other problems the Mavericks have.
Their supporting cast has been non existent. You look at

(07:32):
some of the numbers for PJ. Washington, for Derek Jones Junior,
for Daniel Gafford, for Maxi Kleeber, for Josh Green. None
of these guys have been impact players. Derek Lively was
impactful last game for the first time really all series.
So you know, there's been an argument that Luca and
Kyrie are the greatest offensive backcourt in nb history. Even

(07:56):
if you think they are, you can't win at the
highest level without your role players stepping up.

Speaker 4 (08:03):
Look at Boston's role players.

Speaker 3 (08:04):
Drew Holiday has been fantastic, Derek White at sixteen points
in the last game. Sam Houser has shot lights out
in two of the three games of this series. The
Celtics in addition to their stars showing up, are getting
outstanding performances from their role players, whereas Dallases have barely
shown up.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
You got to check him out on social media. He
is fantastic, as you can tell. He is all over
the NBA, has been for a long time at SI
Chris mannis Chris really appreciate the time, man, Thank you
so much. You got it. Russ. Two interesting notes, by
the way, about the Celtics and Chris mannis number one.
He was a ball boy for them growing up for

(08:45):
a long time, which is always going to be a
little interesting because he's worked in the business so long
now that you disassociate with that for the most part.
But it's interesting. I grew up a huge Eagles fan.
They never to me, I never played for them, but
now that they do their preseason games and do other
work for them, it kind of comes back a little

(09:07):
bit each year. Plus it's hard, like all my family
and friends are diehards, and so it becomes a social thing,
you know, it becomes I want to have something to
engage with with my friends and family.

Speaker 5 (09:18):
Pauli and Mannix was there in the early nineties working
equipment and he would go out and he would set
up the other team, the other team's locker room, the
other thing o the team that was his designation. So
there's pictures of him. He's got where he's on the
court during warmups with his arm against Michael Jordan's back,
helping him work on shots, or because he called him
over and you're supposed to help out how they want.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
It's weird.

Speaker 5 (09:38):
He's got pictures of him with like Ray Allen where
he's pushing against his back, or he's got stories about
doing stuff with Alan Iverson. I mean, his stories are fantastic.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
By the way, I at one point in my life
I was a part owner of the Boston Celtics. My
dad gave me like a piece of stock. Remember they
used to be publicly traded. For Christmas one year, I
got a share of Boston Celtic stocks. So I gotta
tell you, I'm feeling really good about winning this championship
tonight hopefully One hour down, two to go. Stan Patrick

But here's the thing.

Speaker 6 (10:29):
We never have enough time to get to everything we
want to get.

Speaker 7 (10:32):
To, and that's why we have a brand new podcast
called over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun
in our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly,
because this guy is over promising things we never have
time for. Yeah, you blubber list lame in me.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
Well, you know what it's called over promise.

Speaker 6 (10:48):
You should be good at it because you've been over
promising women for years.

Speaker 7 (10:50):
Well, it's a Cavino and Rich after show, and we
want you to be a part of it. We're gonna
be talking sports, of course, but we're also gonna talk

continue on our after show called over Promised.

Speaker 6 (11:04):
Well, if you don't get enough Covino and Rich, make
sure you check out over Promised and also Uncensored, by
the way, So maybe we'll go at it even a
little harder. It's gonna be the best after show podcast

There you go, over promising. Remember you could see on YouTube,
but definitely join us listen over promised with Cavino and
Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you

Speaker 8 (11:26):
About fifteen minutes left here in our number two on
a Meet Friday, Ross Tucker aka Meathead James E.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Vanderbeek filling in for Dan who's also a father, and
I have any big plans for Father's Day? Well we
joined by Darren Ravel momentarily, by the way, but anything
exciting for Father's Day?

Speaker 5 (11:49):
Shouldn't you be asking someone else that question? What we
plans being made for us?

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Well, so that's an interesting question. Then does your significant
other or do your kids not ask you what you
would like to do for Father's Day? By the way,
on a scale of one to ten of importance, I
feel like Mother's Day in society is like a nine
and Father's Days like a two negative two. You mean,

(12:18):
why does nobody care about Father's Day at all? To people?

Speaker 9 (12:23):
Do you go?

Speaker 2 (12:23):
Will you guys all get a Father's Day gift from
your kids or your wife?

Speaker 5 (12:27):
A hap hazard gift? Yeah, Halp hazard, like it was
made that morning or I mean made purchased or made
that morning. My one month daughter gave me a belt
that I already owned once a couple of years ago.

Speaker 4 (12:40):
She rewrapped it.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Was that is amazing. What about you, Marv. My wife
usually asked me what I want to do, and we
just go out somewhere nice and that's it. Not too much.
I don't want anything. Same thing.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
She asked me the other day if I want to
do anything special for Father's Day, and I said, man,
it shouldn't be for me to have to book my
Father's Day gathering.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
Well, I just said to my wife, I would love
to have my father in law and brother in law
over with the kids and hang out by the pool grills.
That is nice, like I don't know, Seaton.

Speaker 10 (13:16):
Yeah, it's usually like dinner or something. You know, I
don't know. You feel like going off for dinner? You
want to staying? What do you want to do?

Speaker 2 (13:22):
What if you said to your wife, you know what
I'd really like. I just want to be by myself
and have a spa day, just to get away from it.
Can you should handle the kids so I can do
a spa day? No, no father has ever said that.
That's what moms say for Mother's Day, but no father.

Speaker 10 (13:38):
Go get a massage, and a facial get the manny
Patty going. I'll see it's about six thirty one.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
For Father's Day, Let's get to my guy, Darren Ravel,
because I didn't even know that. I've seen him posting
about it a little bit, but I didn't know that
Darren was like the world's foremost expert on the Nathan's
Hot Dog Eating Contest. I know you can and should
follow him on social media at Darren Revel two million followers,

(14:05):
two million. That is crazy. Darren was way ahead of
the game from a social media perspective. He's also the
founder of collect Media. Before I even get into Darren
the Hot eating Contest, what's collect Media?

Speaker 9 (14:22):
Hey, Ross, how are you?

Speaker 11 (14:24):
Let me just tell you on Father's Day, I dreamed
to say I'm playing golf, but actually just sit in
the car with air conditioning for five hours. That's that's
that's one of my ideas. And for Father's Day, I
told them that I tell them I'm aggressive. I said,
we're buying a Hibachi grill. I'm getting a five Miyazaki
wagu and that and I'm cooking it and that's what's happening.

(14:46):
So that's my Father's Day. Nice and you know when
the wife notices if she does a drain of two
hundred and seventy five dollars, it's for the wagu steak.
But that's you know, hey, we're going to go great
this Father's Day.

Speaker 2 (14:59):
I like I like a man that I like a
man that knows what he wants tell me about collect
media quickly.

Speaker 11 (15:04):
So so, you know, obviously did the sports business thing
for twenty years and did gambling for five and I
had always been a collector and the journalism had never
really gotten to collecting. It's a multi multi billion dollar
business and so there's not really a site for collectors,

(15:25):
whether they're novice or sophisticated, to come. And you know,
during COVID, if I had one more person say should
I grade my cards?

Speaker 4 (15:33):
What do I have? Is it junk?

Speaker 1 (15:35):
Is it?

Speaker 11 (15:35):
You know, literally the number of questions every day and
so hey, how about we have a site where we
have an FAQ where we can tell people what they're doing.
You know, it's it's been amazing. So it's been two
months we've been doing this and broke a bunch of
stories and having a lot of fun.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
That's awesome. I've got a couple buddies back in Central PA.
That their whole house is sports memorable and they are
in to it. I mean they are. Yeah. They came
over to my house, Darren, and all I had up
was like my my jerseys from the teams I played for,
and they were like, well, where's your other stuff? Like
you know, you played with Brady, where's your I'm like,
I didn't ask Tom Brady for anything I asked. I

(16:13):
didn't say like, hey, Emmett, can I have your jersey?
Although Emmett that was actually his Christmas give to us.
He gave us a signed jersey that year. Back in
two thousand and two. All right, so give me an
update on the hot dog geating contest. Paulie tells me,
you're like the world's foremost expert on this thing over
the years.

Speaker 11 (16:31):
Yeah, so this, you know, and I'm giving credit, thank God,
in the in the book Horsemen of the Esophagus, which
is a great book if you haven't read it. But yeah, No,
in two thousand and two, I was at ESPN and
we had this thing on most sent stories that you
could look at. This is before they were like heat maps,
and the second most sent story in two thousand and

(16:51):
two on ESPN dot Com wasn't like. The first was
deer forces man to flee office, which is on the
outdoors page. Literally, that was the number one most sent
story at ESBIA dot com to that and two and
number two is Kobayashi. And I was like, wait, this
thing happens in Coney Island and we're not doing anything,
and ultimately convinced ESPN to televise it and was the

(17:12):
initial stove side reporter or whatever you want to call it,
and got to know all these guys and yeah, so, uh,
this one's a real interesting one. I had heard rumblings
about a week ago that Joey Chestnut was not going
to be back. I had not heard that he is
signed with Impossible Foods to endorse a plant frank, But

(17:34):
that's kind of how it came out that they you know,
you could you could obviously understand that Nathan's the sponsor
of the hotsog geating contest, doesn't want the plant competitor.

Speaker 4 (17:46):
On Joey Chestnut.

Speaker 11 (17:48):
So whether he canceled them or they canceled him, you know,
it came out that he was not going to be
in the hot dog eating contest, which, by the way,
the fact that the Hotsog Eating Contest can still own
the world as it did, right, despite the fact that
they pretty much had two champions over twenty five years.
This isn't like Jimmy Johnson winning like five Nascars. This

(18:11):
is two champions over twenty five years. This is the
worst parody of any sport, and yet they can grab
the relevance that they do that Joey Chestnut's not going
to be there, so then everyone's like, oh, this is
a stunt, and like, it's not a stunt.

Speaker 9 (18:29):
Believe me.

Speaker 11 (18:29):
The people at Major League Eating that are putting on
the Nathan's hot talking times.

Speaker 4 (18:33):
As they're devastated.

Speaker 11 (18:34):
They're devastated they're not gonna have Joey Chestnuts. But then
the next day it comes out that there's also a
deal for Netflix with Joey versus Kobeyashi for the first
time since what two thousand and four or five.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
So yeah, I mean that sounds a little bit too
much of a coincidence there. To walk me through the
timing there, Darren.

Speaker 11 (18:56):
Well, I think Joey had a ready look at the
Netflix deal, Hey, we're going to own Labor Day instead
of own the fourth of July. And then I think
probably the Impossible Foods deal just slammed the whole thing home,
because you know, Major League Eating's paying this guy like
two hundred and fifty thousand just to be in the

(19:16):
hot dog eating contest. You know, that's a that's a
strong ten minutes, you know. But so I think the
deal just became too good once he could get another
endorsement deal with Impossible. Now we've had a lot of questions.
Do people who are going to eat a plant hot
dog would they eat a real one? Are they really competitors?

(19:41):
That is a big question, ross Like, so I put
that out on Twitter, you know, are they really competitors?
And twenty seven percent of people said that if they
are hot dog eaters, they would consider a plant hot dog.

Speaker 4 (19:55):
That's that's fine.

Speaker 2 (19:57):
Well, my question was going to be, like, in terms
of of a contest, I would think you could probably
eat more plant based hot dogs or does it make
no difference?

Speaker 11 (20:08):
Remember, I think you're I think you're really miscalculating here. Uh,
plant based hot dogs have a lot more sodium. The
sodium factor of when you're I mean, Joey's eyes are
like bulging out red And I think sodium is the
single biggest issue when you're doing this contest. So I

(20:30):
don't know about that.

Speaker 2 (20:31):
What does what does he make a year? You think
Joey Chestnut.

Speaker 11 (20:36):
Probably about with everything, probably a half a million dollars
a year.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
Okay, and now maybe he'll go viral now with the
you do something on Netflix, man, that's international. I mean,
you have a chance to go big when you do that.

Speaker 11 (20:49):
No, and it's Netflix Live, which they're trying to, uh,
you know, obviously put a lot of focus on. So
it's very interesting you.

Speaker 2 (20:59):
Do as a favorite, Derek, and stay on top of
this story. Very important.

Speaker 11 (21:03):
You know, you don't have to ask me. I'm on
top of this, you know. I why will if somehow
Joey Chestnuts competing? I am putting pressure on myself to
break that story.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
I love it. Check him out on social media at
Darren Ravel and of course collect media. Very cool, Thank
you Darren, Thanks Russ. All right, are any of you guys,
I mean, obviously Dan's a huge collector. Any of you
guys big collectors?

Speaker 4 (21:28):
Little bity old stuff like USFL stuff.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
Oh that's cool, yeah, a little bit. I can see
that USFL stuff. I think. The more I guess this
is obvious, but the more unique probably the better. All Right,
here's what we got in the final hour. Steve Levy
from ESPN and about twenty man. It's gonna give us
the update on hockey and how we should feel about
the Stanley Cup finals, plus your calls.

Speaker 1 (21:53):
Next, be sure to catch the live edition of The
Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am
it on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio WAPP.

Speaker 2 (22:04):
I just talked to the guys during the last break.
I said, way a minute, the next break is when
we get to eat the food, right, like the last
break of the show. And Paully dead serious was like, yeah,
but we gotta, we gotta, we gotta get to this first.
We gotta focus, like like as if I wouldn't be
able to pull off an interview with my guy, Steve.

Speaker 5 (22:22):
Lead twenty three.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
Yeah, we're up three to zero in the in the series. Uh,
just like in the NBA and in the NHL fouse.
By the way, quick Steve Levy, note, anyone that ever
is having any type of event like charity event or whatever,
he should be the guy that hosts it or m
sees it. He should be the guy because multiple times

(22:47):
I went to Garth Brooks charity thing and Steve hosted
it and he was phenomenal, just absolutely awesome. And so
when they said who do we want to talk about
or talk with in terms of Stanley Cup Final and hockey,
I'm like Steve. I like Steve. I talk with Steve.
I don't only know these other guys. So let's bring
on Steve, which is what we're doing. Steve is the

(23:09):
host of ESPN's NHL studio show The Point and intermissions
throughout the Stanley Cup Final, which continue with Game four
on Saturday at eight pm Eastern on ABC and ESPN Plus. Steve,
Great to see you, great to talk with you. Are
you still doing that gag? Are you still doing the

(23:29):
host and the Garth Brooks thing?

Speaker 9 (23:32):
Well? Certainly what every invicement.

Speaker 12 (23:33):
It's so funny you bring up Garth because I get
up here to Edmonton and the first thing I see
is this giant mural and it's got all the Oilers
players with David and dry Sidle.

Speaker 9 (23:43):
In the middle of it is Garth.

Speaker 12 (23:44):
Brooks in an Oilers sweater, playing the guitar, and so
of course I sent him the picture and.

Speaker 9 (23:50):
He's he's so cool. He got right back to this.

Speaker 12 (23:53):
That's a fun game for your friends to play ross, right,
like who's the most famous guy in your phone or
famous person in your phone? And Garth Garth Brooks is
definitely the most famous person on my phone and it's
pretty cool, he text me back.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
So you know what's funny, Steve. I am more and
more into in the country music every year than I
used to be. But before, when I was in the
country music really at all, was more my wife. When
I tell them that I sang on stage at the
Grand Old Opry with Tricia Yearwood and Garth Brooks, they

(24:25):
look at me like, that's the greatest thing a human
being you do? I was like, oh, yeah, no, I
just I just told Tricia Yearwood that I liked her
song She's in Love with the Boy, And next thing
I know, I'm on stage with Garth Brooks on guitar.
That was awesome, man, that was awesome.

Speaker 12 (24:40):
So I remember that too, and I remember the people
in Nashville said, you guys are eating We were eating
dinner on the stage, right, That's how big a deal
it was. And the people like it. You know, that
stage is all time stuff. Like you don't get the
It's like the Stanley Cup. You don't touch it unless
you win it. You don't get to be on the
stage unless you're at all times country superstar and they

(25:02):
were having dinner on the stage. That's that's one of
the all time special nights for sure.

Speaker 2 (25:06):
Yeah, that was. And the night before we were at
Garth's Barn wherever that was. That was. That was phenomenal.
I absolutely loved it. I'm not loving Steve that Florida
one again last night. I was really hoping for a
bunch of different reasons, right, Like, I wanted to be
a longer series. There's nothing like a game seven in
playoff hockey. I guess maybe there's a dumb question, but

(25:29):
are the Panthers just that much better than the Oilers?

Speaker 9 (25:33):
I think they are. I think just from top to bottom.

Speaker 12 (25:36):
And I think we knew they were the better team
going in, but that Edmonton had the higher level talent.
You know, we waited a long time. We waited nine
years to see Connor McDavid play for the Stanley Cup.
And here he is, and the Panthers are just all
over him. There's such a good defensive team. The best
part about this is, you know, the Hockey World that

(25:57):
the maybe casual fans that didn't realize or are learning
some new players. You know, it's not just econom McDavid,
Leon Dry Sidle, It's about Sasha Barkov, the captain of
the Florida Panthers, who right now you know him and
Sergey Brabrovski will be the favorites I think for the
com Spike Trophy, which is the playoff win, which is
something the NHL does really cool. It's not the Stanley

(26:18):
Cup Final MVP. The MVP of the entire playoffs is
what they do in hockey. So it's all four rounds
and those two players have been dominant, and really they're
the two reasons that they've taken McDavid and the Oilers
out of the series. They've been that good defensively, and
you know, Barkov scores another goal last night, and he's
just he's just so skilled, and the Panthers are a

(26:40):
terrific story. But yes, I think we're all disappointed this
screen six or seven games going into the series and
now looks like it'll be over much quicker than that.

Speaker 2 (26:49):
Has it changed, Steve in the sense that it used
to be like, okay, if you had Gretzky, you're gonna win.
If you had Mario Lemir, you're gonna win. If you
have Crosby, you're gonna win. The Oilers have McDavid and
they're not gonna win. Has the sport changed or have
they just not done a good enough job surrounding him
with guys so that they do win?

Speaker 9 (27:09):
You know, it's it's more, it's not the fall, the
forwards fall.

Speaker 12 (27:13):
I think it is the ultimate team sport, and I
think you could draw parallels to football.

Speaker 9 (27:17):
But you know, in basketball, with five guys on.

Speaker 12 (27:19):
The court or women on the court, uh, you can
have one superstar or definitely two and win a championship.
And clearly it doesn't work that way in hockey. The
checking in a series, the locking down of a star
in a series does happen all the time. But then
you should be eliminating some of the best players in
the other team, and that's where your secondary scoring comes from.

(27:41):
So the big five for the Edmonton Oilers, so McDavid
and Drystydle, Hymen, the Nuge, and the defenseman Bouchard. Their
five top offensive players have accounted for zero goals so
far in the Stanley in the Stanley Cup Final, and
so you know, it's nice to get chip in scoring

(28:02):
from guys you don't normally expect to do it. McLeod
gets a deflection goal last night for Edmonton. But your
stars do have to step up and perform. They're under
enormous pressure here. But again, I hate to take away
from Edmonton. I want to keep maintaining that Florida being
unbelievable is the story. And hilst they've done this the
whole playoff. They shut down all the Ranger big boys

(28:24):
to get here. They did it to Tampa Bay, they
did it to Boston in the first round. So this
is this is not something new, this is this is
not a trend. This is how the Florida Panthers play hockey. Man,
they look good.

Speaker 2 (28:36):
Talking with Steve Levy, ESPN NHL studio host played by
Play Sports Center anchor calls football games as well, Steve,
you know, I'm guessing there's a lot of people that
feel the way I do. I'm just a guy from Pennsylvania,
right outside of Philly. I really wanted the Canadian team
to win, like I wanted that for the people of Edmonton.

(28:58):
I wanted that for the country, and I feel like
the people in South Florida. I mean, come on hockey,
South Florida, like and maybe maybe you'll tell me, Hey, Ross,
it's cool. It's creating a lot of cool hockey fans
in South Florida. And I'm cool with that. I'm down
with that. I'm trying to spread football over the globe.
So if we're doing that, let's spread hockey to South Florida.

(29:19):
I get that. But I just know it means more
to the people in Edmonton than it does the people
in Miami.

Speaker 9 (29:26):
I know it does, but there's no getting around that.

Speaker 12 (29:28):
I mean, and the Panther fans been all over me
and my coverage when we talk about stuff like that,
the building's not as loud, the tickets are easier to
come by.

Speaker 9 (29:36):
I mean that you cannot argue that.

Speaker 12 (29:38):
In fact, I even said I referenced the old SEC
line right that it just means more, right, and so
and Mark Messier who's from Edward, and a pKa Sumn
are shaking their heads like, yeah, all you have to
do is be in the building up here for the
Canadian national anthem and it's just it's wild, right, And
the game hasn't even started yet, So it's special. We

(30:00):
have not had a Canadian team win in thirty one
years since since Montreal beat Barry Melrose my guy and
Wayne Gretzky's La Kings, and so it's been forever. It's truly,
you know, an international sport, and the Canadian teams have
had good teams that come really close. Winnipeg Jets were
terrific this year. The mate Beliefs always have these great

(30:21):
regular seasons and you know, can't get out of the
first or second round. And so Edmonton finally powers through
and it does seem like they're going to go out,
you know, here with with a whimper, and again.

Speaker 9 (30:32):
They're Listen, Florida has great experience. Now, they went in
a Cup final last year.

Speaker 12 (30:37):
They lost the first two games in Vegas, came home
and won a game, and so I think they were
set up nicely. Polmo Reese, their head coach, said hey,
we're not gonna let that happen us. That was us
last year. And I think they've used the experience of
the Stanley Cup Final to help them this year. And listen,
the Panthers have been around. You know, the Panthers aren't
like Vegas. They haven't been in the league seven years.

(30:57):
You know, the Panthers have been around thirty thirty five years, Yeah,
I think thirty five years now, so, and they haven't
won the Stanley Cup yet.

Speaker 9 (31:04):
So they're certainly entitled for their shot and they're getting
it right now. See.

Speaker 2 (31:08):
There isn't like some reason why the Canadian teams haven't
won it, right, It's not like a financial thing. It's
not like there's no like, there's nothing you can put
a finger on, can you.

Speaker 9 (31:17):
I don't think it's the dollar figure.

Speaker 12 (31:19):
I think all the NHL contracts are based US dollars
regardless of where you are. Listen, some players don't want
to play in some of these markets for a variety
of reasons.

Speaker 9 (31:29):
Okay, it's not all the same reason.

Speaker 12 (31:31):
I know some people some players don't want to play
in Montreal and Toronto. You want to talk about the hotbeds, right,
the pressure cookers where the media is on you and
you know you can't go anywhere.

Speaker 9 (31:42):
You can't go to a Tim Hortons to get a
cup of coffee.

Speaker 12 (31:45):
Otto was a you know, small market, maybe a little
sleepy there, buildings out in the suburbs like that kind
of thing. And in these markets where like you know,
Edmondson and Calgary, they're not these major metropolis, but you're in,
you know, under the microscope, right. I mean there are
videos of you know, Conor McDavid just trying to go

(32:05):
to a packing then by you know, by a case.

Speaker 9 (32:09):
Of beer and they're all over.

Speaker 12 (32:10):
He's got a pre protection everywhere with the security and stuff,
so I think, and that's a lot of American players.
You know, we saw with Matthew k Chuck was really
the face of Florida Panthers. You know, he wanted out
of Calgary for whatever reason, and he's he's now the
face of the Florida Panthers. He's changed everything about that franchise.
We'll see what happens with his brother who's in Ottawa,
like I mentioned, and other players, you know, they want

(32:32):
to be in Anaheim and then that you know, they
could be have a nice life and live in southern California.
You play hockey and you're kind of left alone outside
of the rick. So I think it's a variety of reasons.
I don't think it's necessarily about the cash, but it
is odd.

Speaker 9 (32:45):
It is odd.

Speaker 12 (32:46):
He had seven franchises up in Canada. It's been thirty
one years.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
Yeah, that's wow. That's good context though. That's what I
was looking for. Last question, Steve, we were talking we
had Darren ravel on earlier. We're talking about this Joey
Chestnut versus Kobe Ashi eating contest. So I was asking
the dan Nets if there was one food, like, if
your life depended on an eating contest, what food do

(33:11):
you think you would do the fair, the best at
compared to other other people.

Speaker 9 (33:18):
All right, so I'll give you. I'll give you one.

Speaker 12 (33:20):
It's gonna sound awful, it's gonna be terrible. I can
destroy stone crabs.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
Okay, so now listen.

Speaker 12 (33:29):
They're they're little, and and they're hard to eat at
get out of the shell too, which which speaks to
my skill in that aspect more than the next guy.
But you sit me down at Joe's stone crabs with
some of that mustard sauce, man, and I can go
to town for a long time.

Speaker 9 (33:45):
I feel pretty good about my chances.

Speaker 2 (33:47):
That's awesome. Somebody hit me up on social media and said, uh,
shrimp and cocktail sauce. So usually you don't hear people
going seafood, but I like it.

Speaker 9 (33:57):
But I wanted to give you something different too.

Speaker 2 (33:59):
You know, no wings too, but people all saying wings
or pizza. It's like, yeah, great, great story. Nobody's ever
thought of that one before. I'm sure, hey manx, I'm
sure nobody else can eat a bunch of pizza. I mean,
you gotta think about how it compares to other people.
Have some strategy here. You literally your life depends on it,
right anyway?

Speaker 9 (34:19):
That listen.

Speaker 12 (34:20):
The other caveat there is for Joe Stone grabs like
I can't be paying the bill either. Okay, that's got
to be on a Dan Patrick show. If I'm gonna
win that concept, well, you.

Speaker 2 (34:27):
Won't have to pay the bill. Now, just clip this
video and send it to him for the next time
you go there. I think you'll be all sad.

Speaker 12 (34:32):
Thank you, Steve hi ROSSI well say hi to the
boys for me frixating everybody there.

Speaker 2 (34:36):
I will they said hello as well. Steve Levy does
a terrific job there for ESPN, host of ESPN's NHL
studio show The Point and intermissions throughout the Stanley Cup Final,
which might end tomorrow night, Game four on Saturday, eight
pm Eastern on ABC ESPN Plus. I'm calling it right now.

(34:57):
The Oilers are winning that game. Bam, my first hockey
prediction of all time. I think that I just want
everybody at Edmonton and Canada to remember this. When the
Oilers get the job done Saturday night, it'll be because
I predicted it would happen. And if they don't, no
one will remember at all because they said it Friday

(35:18):
morning and it'll be Saturday, and then Sunday we'll have
the US Open and Father's Day and next thing you know,
it'll be Monday. All right, So we got a couple
of things we need to do, all right, last call
for calls eight seven seven three DP show or hitting
me up with your food item at Ross Tucker, NFL

(35:39):
at DP Show. We'll also get to this day in
sports history. We'll get to poll results. Do we even
have a poll question? We had one earlier? Yeah? Yeah,
Did I ask you what it was?

Speaker 10 (35:52):
No, But we've been kind of talking about it all day.
I had sweeps are awesome or awful?

Speaker 2 (35:58):
Got it? Yeah? People are gonna say awful. That's my
I'm not even asking you.

Speaker 10 (36:01):
Twenty seven percent say they are awful.

Speaker 2 (36:03):
I would imagine that weekend plans and what we learned
if I'm back in this chair after I see how
many brats and Italian sauases I can eat. Thirty eight
minutes past the hour here on The Dan Patrick Show.
