of the day coming up. Jalen Brown wins the finals MVP,
which is kind of sneaky.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
I know.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
There was a lot of talk about this, where who's
the leader, who's the best player on the team. Jason
Tatum is still the best player on the team. He's
always going to get your best defender, and as a result,
I thought Jalen Brown stepped up, and by stepping up,
it felt like he stood out and therefore he won
the MVP. The team still revolves around Jason Tatum. It's
(01:40):
rare to have a championship team when your two best
players play the same position. It doesn't happen Normally. You
have your guard and your big man.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Maybe you have the guard and.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
A small forward, but you don't have two threes there
to all forwards. But Boston was able to do it
and go back a couple of years when they weren't
winning the title. They were getting there, they weren't winning it. Oh,
you got to blow it up. You're gonna have to
get rid of Jalen Brown. What could you get for
Jalen Brown. But Jalen Brown played great. It feels like
(02:15):
he played above what people thought. Therefore he was more valuable.
Jason Tatum was wonderful last night. And if you look
at the numbers, I mean, those are impressive numbers. Those
are historical numbers when you're looking at the Boston Celtics.
But Jalen Brown the Finals MVP. Tatum at thirty one,
eleven and eight the first Celtic to have those numbers
(02:37):
in an NBA Finals game since Larry Bird in nineteen
eighty six, and he averaged twenty five, ten and six
for the postseason.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
No, not yet.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Paul Pierce and Larry Bird are the only other players
who have done that for the Celtics.
Speaker 5 (02:56):
Wood Day, Stannaaday, this is the state of the day.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
I was waiting for something with the MAVs last night,
and I think that they basically gave you everything they
had in Game four. Boston's the better team, deeper team,
and really, if you look at how it's constructed, you
have to go back with some moves that were made.
And the most valuable player for the Celtics might have
been Dame Lillard because Dame Lillard goes to the Bucks.
(03:35):
The Bucks make Drew holiday expendable holiday fills in whatever
the gray area was for Boston this year, ye had
Al Horford in there. They picked up christ tops Porzingis.
You know Washington didn't want him. They had to pay
part of his salary to send him to Boston. I mean,
there's so many things that happened. Derek White, Derek White
(03:55):
trade with San Antonio. There's a Division two player. You
pick him up and you're like that guy. This guy's
pretty good. That guy may plays hard. So you have
to have those players. It's just like Denver last year.
I can have Joker and Jamal, I gotta have the
other players. You can't win a championship with just two players,
(04:16):
two stars. You must have those guys who are B
players or C plus players. What do you need me
to do, I'll do it. How long do you need
me to do it? I'll be in there, I'll hustle.
And that's what Boston had this year. It just it worked.
And I know that we want to label was this
a dynasty? I think they had the chance to be
(04:37):
a dynasty the last five years, six years. Winning a
title doesn't mean you're going to be a dynasty. I
think we thought Milwaukee could be a dynasty. I think
we thought Denver could be a dynasty. Man, it's tough
and it's going to be tough for Boston. Again, you
can't get greedy, but we do get greedy as fans
because you got to go back to eight, the last
(04:57):
time they won a title, and that's a long time ago.
But they've had their opportunities and it's almost like they
had like the Buffalo Bills, like they had their opportunity,
their window, and then they didn't capitalize on it. Now
with Boston, are they going to be a dynasty? Wether
two players are young, their two stars are young, and
(05:19):
because of that, you know, you give them a chance,
they're going to be the favorite. You know coming up
next year DraftKings already has them as the favorites. Then
it's Denver, the Thunder, Timberwolves, Bucks in the maps. So
let's just look at the East. The only other competition
right now is the Bucks. Now you're almost guaranteed you're
going to be in the Eastern Conference finals again if
you just play relatively you know, consistent basketball. But for
(05:43):
Jason Tatum and we were wondering who benefited the most
from winning a title. Well, certainly this guy, Jason Tatum.
Speaker 6 (05:52):
It's a real feeling. I still hasn't really kicked in yet,
just trying, and I guess enjoyed a moment. I kept saying, Wow,
these last seven here's been a roller coaster up and down.
I had to listen on it about me and tonight
it was worth it.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Oh my god, good for him, Good for him, Yes,
he did have to hear it. You get a max contract,
you're the best player on your team. We keep waiting
for you to win a title. First Team All NBA. Yes,
that goes along with the territory here. Now you're okay. Now,
Jason Chatum's on scholarship for a little while, Jalen Brown
(06:29):
on scholarship, The Celtics on scholarship. Here, Brad Stevens take
a victory lap. And you did a wonderful job.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
You know.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
You go from coaching, go into the front office, and
you brought in in a sneaky way, Jeff Van Gundy
to help Joe Missoula as the head coach. Now Van
Gundy's going to go to the Clippers to be their
top assistant. I think he gets a ring for being
a consultant slash coach for the Celtics. I hope he does.
(06:59):
And now he's going to go to the Clippers. The
Celtics gave him a lifeline because ESPN fired him and
all of a sudden he had to go back into coaching.
And now he's back in coaching and he'll go with
ty Loo and be the first assistant for the Clippers.
There a lot of people Joe Missoula benefited. We talked
about this when the playoffs started. If they don't win,
(07:23):
they may make a change with their head coach. It's
like when Mike Budenholzer won a title with the Bucks,
he was going to get fired and eventually got fired,
But Joe Missoula was on the hot seat and he
was going to get the blame. He was going to
be the fall guy. It felt like Jalen Brown, your MVP,
talking about his teammate Jason Tatum.
Speaker 7 (07:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (07:45):
We just take it one game at a time. You know,
we started this journey together. We both drafted here and
we both you know, have mate boss in our home.
Speaker 7 (07:54):
Man.
Speaker 8 (07:54):
We just love getting after it, loved growing, love getting better,
tasting greatness. So I can't say enough about Jason Tatum, Man,
it sacrificed this year. His ability to just be selfless,
you know, really really showed in the finals, really showed
all playoffs. And I'm grateful, man, But I couldn't do
it without any of my teammates and JT How's my
brother for life?
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Yes, but it was a total team effort. If I said,
you know that Derek White and Drew Holliday, would they
have twenty rebounds?
Speaker 7 (08:22):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Combined. See your guards are getting twenty rebounds. And if
you watched the game last night, I kept saying, where's
Dallas's big men? Can you guys get some rebounds? Can
you keep some offensive rebounds? Can you keep it alive?
How about defensive rebounds? Boston is a better team. But
I don't know if I can go boy lack of
(08:44):
effort on Dallas's part. I just think when you're third
best players PJ. Washington, you know you got to strengthen
the roster here. I don't know if Dallas is going
to get back. I think we saw some great things
from them. I think they would consider this a good season,
maybe great season that they got to the finals. But
if I'm looking at the West, you know this next season,
(09:07):
you're not gonna get back, I think playing that kind
of basketball because Denver got it just so that it
matched up. Minnesota was geared to beat Denver, but Minnesota
wasn't geared to beat Dallas. So you you know, matchups
are everything, you know. Meanwhile, Boston was geared up to
beat anybody. I kept thinking last night if Denver was
(09:28):
in the finals, it'd be a whole lot.
Speaker 9 (09:30):
More entertaining watching this fire. That's I missed the Denver
Nuggets so much this series.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
Never more so than last night when I'm going.
Speaker 9 (09:40):
Like, I wanted to apologize that I've been taking you
guys for granted. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I was wrong.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
I'm sorry. Joker's not around, he's not even in the
United States. Probably we get at Jamal Murray highlights something.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
Yeah, yeah, can we do something here?
Speaker 10 (09:54):
All right?
Speaker 3 (09:54):
What's poll question we're going to go with.
Speaker 9 (09:56):
You know, I don't know that the Mavericks made many
adjustments either. I don't know that if Jason Kidd had
a great series or not, but they seem to stick
to this one game plan.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
How many adjustments can you make?
Speaker 9 (10:08):
There has to be something more you can do than
like either all right, Kyrie, one of you, two guys
bring the ball up, will set a high screen for you,
do your best to get a shot off. There has
to be more of a game play. Everybody else stands
clear out. But they did what they did to get here.
And now you're saying, hey, you got to adjust. I
don't think they had. I mean it was checkers and
(10:29):
chess here. There's gotta be something else you can do
other than well, we don't have the lob right now, Kyrie.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Just do you figure something out, Luca.
Speaker 9 (10:40):
You just if Kyrie's not going to do it, then
you do it. There's got to be saying and if
you're like right like you said with the big man, like, hey,
could somebody just get a rebound? Just get one rebound?
Just one we'll score. But you guys just help us
out on the boards.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Please. What's the poll question we're going to go with
first out?
Speaker 9 (10:56):
I think we're going to go with this is a
bit of a bigger topic. But who will this title
the most for it?
Speaker 3 (11:00):
Okay? Okay.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Oh, by the way, we just heard from Mike Breen
who was on the call. Brinievil jonas coming up in
an hour from now, he was working for the Mothership
in ABC.
Speaker 9 (11:10):
All right, see, we have to narrow this down to
four though, Okay, Okay, Jason Tatum obviously, Jylen Brown, same category, obviously, right,
Derek White, Okay. Al Horford.
Speaker 11 (11:30):
Horford's interesting.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
We's got two NBA titles and he's got two NCAA titles.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
Is that right, Mark, He's got one NBA title.
Speaker 9 (11:40):
Oh, that was the one. That was the one last night.
That's why it was a big deal for We did
it for Al.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
Yeah, this one's for Hour.
Speaker 11 (11:50):
Thirty seven years old. He's been in fifteen playoff series
in his career and this is his first title for
big Al Horford.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Okay, Drew Holliday, that's his second second, right, he went
win with Milwaukes that he's now gone into key piece territory.
Speaker 9 (12:08):
If you, if you want to that's gonna get him
another five five checks easily, another five contracts. Okay, if
you want to win, you bring a guy like me
in off the bench, No problem, I got you.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
So, Joe Missoula, Tatum, basically Stevens. That's there's a lot
of people benefiting. Who do I think benefited the most?
Speaker 9 (12:28):
I feel like it's between Tatum, Brown, Missoula and Stevens.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
But that's just me.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
I would say Tatum because if you're going to be
labeled as one of the five to seven best players
in the game, you got to win a title here. Eventually,
you got to win a title. And you've gone to
the Eastern Conference finals, you've gone to the NBA Finals.
You haven't done well on the big stage in big games,
and now you finally did. I would say Jason Tatum,
and probably not a close second.
Speaker 11 (12:56):
Yes, paulis a little bit a light dissensione Mizzoula can
get a new contract off this. He's established now, but
he has two off seasons and he's fired. They clearly
there's there's no longevity to winning a title. True, ask
Nick Nurse. He'll be out here. Joe Mizula will not
be the coach there in three years for whatever reason.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
Okay, and.
Speaker 9 (13:18):
Maybe our very last pie.
Speaker 11 (13:19):
And Jason Tatum did a clean up on Aisle five.
You know, he's uncritiquable until they don't advance to the
finals next year. I look at guys like Holiday and
Horford that these are kind of like on the cusp
of being in the Hall of Fame someday. Guys who
are really borderline, it's not an offensive statement to say
they're borderline. But Drew Holliday two All Star appearances, you know,
(13:41):
career average of sixteen points. He may have snuck a
ticket to the Hall of Fame. Yeah, that that that's
for the life.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
I mean, it's easier to get into the basketball Hall
of Fame than it is like the football Hall of Fame,
certainly the Baseball Hall of Fame. They're they're more lenient
and they're inclusive of what you did with them or
international play. I would say Tatum though, because now you
can validate, you can put that, you can rubber stamp.
(14:08):
Now you're one of the great Celtics of all time.
Gotta win titles. Gotta win titles, at least a title
like Paul Pierce. If he doesn't win a title, then
Paul Pierce is just a great score. He won a title,
then all of a sudden, it's different, Yes, Marv, Yeah.
Speaker 12 (14:23):
I'm also go with Tatum. He's now in that Giannis
in Joker category where he won a title with the
team he was drafted by, which means a whole lot,
and now he's kind of on scholarship for a while
because look this whole dynasty talk. Relax because now we're
on year seven of Tatum and Brown. Told you they're
life young. They are like midlife crisis NBA, NBA.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
I don't know if it's that.
Speaker 9 (14:48):
They definitely were at the you guys better do this quick.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
This year.
Speaker 9 (14:52):
Yeah, this year was a pivotal year for that.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Kyrie is the one who is relatively young in life
but old in basketball because he came in at what nineteen,
Now he's thirty two. Now he's you know, he's mister Miyagi.
You know he's got all this wisdom. Yeah, which I
had a jumper. Yeah, oh mister Miyagi could play. Yeah,
good handle, great hands. Wax On wax off. Absolutely. But Kyrie,
(15:19):
you know, Kyrie, I think has got perspective now of
what happened and his role in that. He said, look,
he didn't embrace the Celtics. He didn't embrace Lebron. Brooklyn
was terrible. He knows that, you know, the days are
running out. He had this to say about Luca after
the game. Did JB win finals?
Speaker 3 (15:40):
MVP?
Speaker 13 (15:41):
Yeah that was that was big time to see that
trophy in his hands. I think him and JT should
have split it. But you know, those two guys in particular,
have you know, almost been like students and as well
now becoming teachers in their own rights.
Speaker 9 (15:52):
So to see them and accomplish that, I'm really proud,
you know, and also.
Speaker 13 (15:55):
Extremely motivated to get back to this position in the
next few years.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
Yeah, my bad.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
He was talking about Tatum and Brown is former teammates
there and these guys, you know, six seven years into
their career and they're twenty six, twenty seven years of age.
You still got a window of opportunity here. And I
don't think the.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
East is great.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
Let's say Paul George goes to the Sixers, all right,
now you got my attention. Are the Knicks going to
be able to be the Knicks that we saw in
the postseason, just healthier? What about the Bucks? What about
the heat? Is there an outlier there? But if I'm Boston,
I'm like, I'm good. Nobody scares me here, at least
not yet. Now you've got a chance to be in
(16:36):
the Eastern Conference finals, maybe another NBA finals, And I
don't know if you can pencil in Denver because of
what happened. Can I pencil in Dallas, Can I pencil
in Oklahoma City? Houston's going to be, you know, a
team on the climb. So you probably got five or
six teams that are legitimately title contenders or at least
(16:59):
they can get to the NBA Finals in the West.
In the East, it feels like it's Boston, and then
we take a step back. I don't even know if
there's a second team. I think you got to go
down to number three before you go. Okay, they got
a chance, but you do have the hangover all the time,
and then you're gonna get players who want to get paid.
Maybe they end up with other teams, you know, because
Denver had that problem. They lost some players, and to me,
(17:21):
that was a big difference. You know, when you lose
Bruce Brown, like you lost a really valuable player, and
that happens sometimes. But I think what we saw very
impressive with Dallas. They were the best team during the
regular season and they showed that during the postseason. All right, well,
take a break. We'll set up our poll question and
Mike Breen will join us at the top of the hour.
(17:42):
Your phone call is always welcome. Take a break back

Congratulations to the Boston Celtics winning their eighteenth title in
franchise history, breaking a tie with the Lakers. Maybe the
Lakers find their head coach as early as today with
JJ Reddick's responsibilities with the NBA Finals done. Haven't heard
anything to the contrary, at least for a week or so,
but JJ Reddick already had his interview in person with
(18:52):
the Lakers. Seems to be their guy. You don't need
him for the draft. You'd like to have him for
the draft, but you do need your head coach for
free agency? Because if I'm a free agent and I'm
going to go to the Lakers or thinking about the Lakers,
I want to know who my head coach is. I
want to be able to talk to him. What kind
of philosophy do you have here?
Speaker 3 (19:12):
JJ?
Speaker 2 (19:12):
One of the great scores in college history and one
of the great shooters in NBA history. All right, what
are we doing here? You have to have your coach
in place, and they will before free agency at the
end of the month. But as far as your draft, well,
they got a first round pick and they got a
big second round pick as well. What role will he
play in that? Eight seven seven three DP Show Email

stat of the Day brought to you by PENAI America,
the official trading cards of the program. Mike Breen was
on the call for The Mothership ABC last night. He
will join us coming up here in a moment. Let's
(20:01):
clean up our ones poll, question their seat and move
ahead to hour two.
Speaker 9 (20:05):
Yeah, we have who will this title do the most
for Jason Tatum, Jalen Brown, Joe Mizzula or Brad Stevens.
Right now, Jason Tatum has about half the vote, but
with a quarter of the vote, Brad Stevens.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
Okay, yeah, I mean Brad Stevens out of nowhere with
what he did when he was at Butler and then
getting the Celtics job, and then when he stepped down
went into the front office. Remember im Aodoka, they had
him and you know, mysteriously he was kicked to the curb,
was going to go to Brooklyn, they didn't hire him.
(20:38):
Now with Houston, and you have Joe Mizoula stepping in
and winning an NBA title, pretty amazing. And you look
at some of the storylines. You know, Porzingis was with
the Wizards and I think the Wizards had to pay
part of his salary to get rid of him. Drew Holliday,
he's with Milwaukee, they bring in Dame Lillard. All of
(20:59):
a sudden, Rue Holliday is in Portland for a day
and then Brad Stevens brings him into Boston. Derek White
was with San Antonio Division two player. All of a sudden,
here you go, he's winning an NBA title. So you
have Tatum and you have Brown. Go back to the
draft when the Sixers traded up to get the number
(21:19):
one pick so they could take Markel Foltz. The Celtics
had the number one pick, but they knew that they
were getting the better player at number three with Jason
Tatum Jalen Brown, a curiosity out of cow. And then
you're going, uh, yeah, they play the same position. You
might have to blow this up. You can't have two
players playing the same position. And if you think about it,
(21:41):
you know Shaq and Kobe, Dwayne Wade Chack. I mean,
go down through history of great teams. You've always felt like,
you know, Klay Thompson and Steph Curry great shooters, but
not necessarily similar because Clay was pretty much a catch
and shoot where Curry off the dribble. But you have
(22:01):
these players, these teams, and they're usually playing a different position.
But it all fell into place. Great offensive team this year,
certainly great defense as well. Mike Breen ESPN, ABC play
by play voice of course, play by play voice for
the Knicks as well. Brini, thanks for joining us. How
would you sum up the NBA Finals?
Speaker 7 (22:23):
You know what, Daniel, I think it was satisfying to
watch a team like this that had been through, especially
the two players you're talking about, had been through, you know,
the highs and certainly the lows, to be able to
finally get it together and have a season the way
they finished up. I mean, those two guys, they're wonderful
(22:47):
young men, They're terrific players, and they sacrificed to get
what everybody wanted them to get and what they wanted
more than anything. So it was satisfying to see these
two guys figure it out and finally get the job done.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
I'm not sure if it was an exhale, Mike or
I mean, it was a celebration, but also just more
of a thank god we got an NBA title.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
Did you get.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
Any of any sense of that during the finals or
certainly last night.
Speaker 3 (23:15):
Was it relief or was it celebration?
Speaker 7 (23:20):
No, it was definitely celebration, jubilation almost for it ecstasy.
It's my favorite part every year is to see the
joy in the faces of these guys. They become little kids,
and you know they'll wait a couple of days before
somebody starts to say, well, can they win too in
a row so they can enjoy it at least for
(23:41):
they can enjoy it at least fan now. But it
was absolutely a celebration their one goal from the start
of the season. They really didn't care who did the scoring.
They really didn't care who won the conference finals MVP
or Finals MVP. They just wanted to get a ring
And it was a great group that was put to
get out of The additions helped, but those two who
(24:04):
you know, they understand the pressure of playing in that city.
For those fans to be able to come to like
that was really nice to see.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
And I know that Jalen Brown wins the MVP, and
I think like Jason Tatum played like Jason Tatum supposed
to play. It felt like Jalen Brown played a little
bit better than.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
What we thought.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Therefore, it felt like we were equating that with more
valuable to the team. How do you differentiate or validate
who's the MVP.
Speaker 7 (24:35):
You know, to me, it's not even just the two
of them. This team is the epitome of five guys.
And you know, you had a couple of the extras
two in terms of the supporting cast, just all season long,
they played for each other all season long. It was
about sacrifice all season long. They didn't care who who
(24:56):
was getting the accolades. And it seemed every night there
were three or four for of the players who seemed
to do something special. Not necessarily score twenty five to thirty,
but have three steals, get a big block at the
most critical moment. And that's what was so special about
the team. You could after every playoff game it was like,
(25:17):
all right, who do we talk about because we can
talk about six different guys who contributed and that's for me,
it's always that's basketball at its finest.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
We're talking to Mike Breen and the Mothership on the
call last night. There was a play in the second
quarter where Kyrie kind of tumbled near you, guys, and
then you admonished. You know, a fan said something to Kyrie,
what did you see?
Speaker 7 (25:39):
And hear, well, I mean he came crashing in first off,
He just completely barreled over our statistician, Dave Freed, and
when he bounced off him and he was on his
back and there's like a two tier area behind our
behind our table and he was having trouble get up.
(26:00):
It's so tight right there, and he couldn't get up,
and you know, we're trying to help him up and
he just he was at such an angle we couldn't
get up. And then all of a sudden, I didn't
hear the specific words, but somebody, you know, yelled something
disparaging to him. And as he's getting up, he stopped
and he looked back at the person and he's like, really,
and then he didn't use those words, and he said,
(26:23):
what's wrong with you? And it's just it was so distasteful.
Here's the guy, he could be really hurt. He's trying
to get up, and that's what somebody takes the opportunity
to say. The fans there, by the way, are fantastic.
It's one of my favorite readers, and the fans are
a big part of it. But you know, there's always
somebody that's willing to do something like that.
Speaker 2 (26:43):
What's the loudest stadium that you've ever been in Chicago?
Speaker 7 (26:49):
The Old Chicago Stadium? I mean, by far, there's been
some great ones. Madison Square Gardens is unbelievable. In big moments,
I think Oracle Arena when the Warriors played in Oakland, unbelievable,
the Barco Arena and Sacramento, uh, the OKC Arena that's
(27:10):
gone through various various name changes, but Chicago Stadium was
the most incredible noise I've ever heard. You could be
sitting next to me and screaming at me and I
had no idea what you're saying when it was loud
like that. So that's number one for me.
Speaker 3 (27:27):
Is JJ Reddick still on the payroll to ESPN.
Speaker 7 (27:32):
We're trying to confirm that right now. So I answer
your question, I say no, Like I said, you know,
I've become like you know, those coaches that have coaching trees.
I'm in the broadtest now as coaching trees.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
It's not you, Mike, Okay, it's not you. I don't
I don't want you to feel like that they're leaving
because of you. They're they're going to someplace. They're not
leaving someplace.
Speaker 7 (28:00):
Well, there's some there's some doubt to that. You know,
I've gotten some dirty looks from my partners over the years,
and they're leaving at a pretty rapid pace lately. So
I'm okay.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
Down time, when you go to dinner with JJ Reddick.
Can you bring up the Lakers job? Have you brought
up the Lakers job?
Speaker 7 (28:21):
Yes, just to ask him what's going on? What can
he tell us? You know I've done that over the years,
and so.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
What's going on? What can you tell us? Is he
taking the Lakers job?
Speaker 7 (28:36):
To be determined. He hasn't been offered the Lakers job yet.
Speaker 3 (28:39):
Do you think he'll be your broadcast partner?
Speaker 2 (28:42):
Are you planning on JJ being your broadcast partner next year?
Speaker 7 (28:48):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (28:50):
That was a pause? A pause?
Speaker 7 (28:55):
What are you doing? I'm tired? I stayed up doing
shame on you, Dan Patrick.
Speaker 3 (29:03):
Wait did you go out and party last night?
Speaker 7 (29:07):
Well we had our celebratory post finals.
Speaker 3 (29:10):
Dinner of course, Okay, dinner at midnight?
Speaker 7 (29:18):
No, it's more like one o'clock.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
All right.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
Well, I'll take it easy on you until you get
some more rest, and then i'll ask you Jjo taking
the Lakers job?
Speaker 3 (29:31):
Hey, thanks for joining us.
Speaker 7 (29:32):
If I hear anything, I'll call you.
Speaker 3 (29:33):
I'm sure you will anything.
Speaker 7 (29:34):
I'll call you by you.
Speaker 3 (29:36):
Know what, just text me bang bang.
Speaker 7 (29:41):
And then I'll know that's a that's a deal.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
Then thag you Breen? Great job? Uh?
Speaker 2 (29:47):
Ok, Mike Breen, come on. Yes, great run, he's having
came on the show. I got to ask you. You
want soft questions? There's other shows you can go on. Yeah, right,
said he hadn't been off for the job yet, Like,
what are you doing to me? Just asking you some
(30:09):
tough questions? That's all A couple of phone calls here, Oh,
what's poll question for hour or two?
Speaker 3 (30:14):
See?
Speaker 9 (30:15):
Uh, Well, I was kicking around a best duo in
sports currently. I don't come up with a lot of them,
though it might not be a good poll question. Then
Mahomes and Kelsey immediately jumps to the two. That's the
one right there. Okay, I don't know if you do, like,
see this is where we're already again. Maybe it's just
these two that we could say it's just Tatum and Brown,
(30:37):
Mahomes and Kelsey.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
Who's the better duo?
Speaker 2 (30:41):
Well, I know that those two in Kansas City are
going to the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 9 (30:45):
They've already done it a bunch.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
One might be the greatest at his position and one
is en route to being one of the greatest at
his position. They've won one, what three titles? So I
would say, those guys, even though you got time on
your side, with you know, Tatum and Brown. Yeah, I
(31:09):
think we'd need a couple other you'd almost have to
do it historically. But you can't even do that to
Tatum and Brown because that's not sail belonging there. No,
they don't, they don't.
Speaker 11 (31:19):
Yes, Paul I would throw out right now, even though
he's hurt. Mookie Bets and sho heyo, Tani. Rarely do
you have two of the four best players. And I'm
stretching it in the sport and on the same line, yeah.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
Yeah, show had hadn't won yet.
Speaker 11 (31:35):
No, I guess what I'm saying, just you know, greatness,
current greatness.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
Yeah, but greatness is winning titles. Like if we're saying
best do it.
Speaker 11 (31:42):
To be fair to him, he was on the Angels
for a long time.
Speaker 3 (31:44):
Yeah, and whose false that he didn't have to sign
with them him.
Speaker 2 (31:48):
Yeah, don't go there, And don't bring that interpreter either.
He's trouble. Anybody with a haircut like that, you can't trust.
That's why he had a haircut like that. He spent
all his money gambling. Oh no, I'm talking about the interpreter.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
Not a time all right, let me take a break.
Care we'll get to more phone calls.
Speaker 11 (32:09):
You know, Tony's got great hair.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
He does, got nice boss with the interpreter.
Speaker 11 (32:13):
Come on, would you rather lose your hair or sixteen
million dollars for the guy you're supposed to be protecting.
Speaker 3 (32:20):
I'd rather lose my hair.
Speaker 11 (32:21):
No, that's actually not true.
Speaker 1 (32:23):

Speaker 2 (32:35):
Final hour in this Tuesday Dan and the Dan Edge
Dan Patrick Show. The area code six one seven or
June seventeenth, it's Boston either way winning the NBA Championship.
The numerology right, the Boston Celtics with a six one
seven area code winning the title on six seven.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
The say something to that stuff.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
I love the numbers, Yes you do, Celtics from all
the MAVs one six to eighty eight, that's eighteen titles
in franchise history. The Mavericks had a great season, a
good season, or got exposed? Oh is it too soon
to be asking this kind of questions? That's what I'm thinking.
I think Dallas had a great season and got exposed.
(33:22):
So if I took number one and number three on
those answers. Well, they got exposed by a better team.
Let's be fair, Boston's a better team. You had to
have thirty a night from both Luke and Kyrie if
you were going to win. You had to have that
because I didn't think you had the scoring with the
other players.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
You had some bigs.
Speaker 11 (33:43):
PJ.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
Washington, Tim Hardaway Junior wasn't playing. I didn't have that
third option where I can go, I can plug in
maybe sixteen to eighteen points. Boston had Tatum and Brown
and they didn't even have to play great because Drew
played great, Derek White played great, per Zingis contributed. They
(34:05):
had a total team effort there. But I would say
the Mavericks had a great season to get to the
NBA Finals.
Speaker 3 (34:11):
But I think they got.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
Exposed a little bit that they do need that third score.
And Kyrie is thirty two and that feels like an
older thirty two Luca. Luca needs to come back, and
I think he needs to realize these opportunities don't happen
very often. Luca could be like Dan Marino, and Luca
got exposed a little bit. People wanted to christen him
(34:34):
if he won the titles the best player in the world.
Even if Dallas wins the title, Luca's not the best
player in the world.
Speaker 3 (34:39):
It's still the joker. It is.
Speaker 2 (34:43):
But Luca got exposed and I know he's banged up.
He said it doesn't matter, you know, you gotta play,
and he did and he had a pretty good.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
Game last night.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
But really I didn't think he was great in the
NBA Finals. But I'm going to get Boston the credit
with that. They had a lot of defenders, a lot
of different sizes there. When you have a couple of
guys who are six ' nine guarding you Drew Holliday
Al Horford like, they weren't afraid to switch off, and
you needed to do that. You need to give him
different looks. But will they get this chance again? And
(35:15):
I think, really that's the question you have. Boston will
get this chance again in my opinion, because I don't
look at the East as formidable the West is. Can
Dallas do this again? Boston? You're going to fight the
hangover of winning a title. But am I worried about Philly?
Speaker 3 (35:31):
No? Am I worried about the Knicks, No, the heat, no, Milwaukee? No.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
Now it's up to you, if you play similarly to
how you did this year, you're going to be in
the Eastern Conference finals. You got everybody locked up. I
believe it's that right, Paul. Contract Wise, Jalen Brown's locked
up for four more years. Jason Tatum's about to get
a new deal, but he's under contract for next year. Look,
there's a lot of speculation's going to get a new,
big extension. Drew Holliday's under contract for at least three
(36:00):
more years. Derek White and Al Horford are under contract
for next season. So your core is definitely back next year. Yeah,
and you might have Al Horford one more year. But
if you look at the deals that were made, and
I think Brad Stevens did a wonderful job because like
little things, he brought in Jef van Gundy when he
got fired by the Mothership to serve as an advisor,
(36:23):
like a front office and head coaching advisor.
Speaker 3 (36:26):
I mean, what a luxury there.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
You make the trade you get porzingis get him out
of Washington. Drew Holliday, when the Bucks brought in Dame Lillard,
you make a trade.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
You bring him in.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
Derek White from San Antonio, like you know, you piece
all this together, and your two best players play the
same position, and I think we were ready to say
if they didn't win it this year, they needed to
blow it up. It was celebratory, but I also thought
that there was an exale, certainly with the star players,
because you finally won. It's like when Clayton kershof Final
(37:00):
won a title for the Dodgers. It was like, now
I can celebrate. And that's what you had with Jason
Tatum and Jalen Brown last night. That great team, best
team this year in the NBA from start to finish,
and rightfully so as the champions. Here's Jason Tatum talking
about the critics.
Speaker 6 (37:22):
It's a real feeling. I still hasn't really kicked in yet.
Just try and I guess enjoyed a moment. I kept saying, Wow,
these last seven years have been a roller coaster up
and down. I had to listen on about me and
tonight it was worth it.
Speaker 3 (37:38):
Oh my god, that's an exil. That's relief.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
I know it's celebration, but there's a part of you
that goes thankfully. Now they can move on and criticize
somebody else, because now it's going to be on Luca
this and Embiid because we keep waiting Joe L.
Speaker 3 (37:55):
Embiid hasn't won.
Speaker 2 (37:56):
Remember when it was a Joker and Embiid won the
because I think a lot of the voters said, well,
Joker hasn't won a title. Now he won a title,
we move on. Jannis won a title, then we move on.
Jason Tatum wins the title, now we move on. But
you still are going to have Joe El Embiid in there,
and you're gonna have Luca. Those are the next two
(38:17):
guys up. Yeah, Paul, So we were just discussing, are
we playing the game? Who is the next NBA star
to be overly criticized for not doing enough it Embiid alone?
Speaker 3 (38:27):
No, I think it's Luca.
Speaker 11 (38:29):
Yeah, but does he get a little bit of a
hall pass but by himself some time by getting to
the finals?
Speaker 2 (38:35):
Well, I think he got exposed. I don't think he
came off well in the NBA finals. You know, Embiid,
I think we're always looking at him. You know, he
suffered some bad injuries, serious injuries, and to be able
to come back. I don't know if we're as hard
on Embiid as we're going to be on Luca, because
(38:57):
I think it's going to be now people are gonna
watch Luca is a highlight guy.
Speaker 3 (39:02):
You know, sometimes you don't watch games.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
It's like when people said, oh, Shay gilgis Alexander, Well
you're watching highlights.
Speaker 3 (39:09):
You're not watching OKC games. You're just not.
Speaker 2 (39:12):
And he's a wonderful player, but he was not the MVP,
Like there's a difference. Joker is the MVP, and then
there's everybody else in my opinion, but there's some guys
when they play at a really high level and consistent
level and a healthy level, then they're right there with him.
So I think Luca's going to get a little bit
more of the microscope here coming up.
Speaker 9 (39:33):
Yes, and Luca he's twenty five. Yeah, he seems.
Speaker 3 (39:39):
Like an older twenty five.
Speaker 9 (39:40):
Yes, he got a watching him, especially this last series,
he looked like an old twenty five.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
Yes he did. But I do think he needs to
get in better shape.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
I think he needs to be dedicated to Sometimes you
can do it and then you have to put in
the effort to do it, even at a higher level.
And I think if he dedicates himself and come in
ready to go and be a little bit more mobile
on the defensive end, because you know what, you can
score at one end, but you're giving up buckets at
(40:08):
the other end. And if you're not giving up buckets,
you're giving up your guys, you know, getting assists, giving
up buckets, and they went after and you got to
get better at that, and I think being in better shape.
And they also need a third option here, a consistent
third option there, or even if you have three and
four and they take turns being you know, semi consistent
(40:32):
for you. Dallas needs that, especially in the West because
you got you got teams that have dual stars there,
but they have it feels like a better supporting cast
than Dallas.
Speaker 3 (40:43):
And I like PJ.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
Washington, I just don't know if that's my go to
guy as a third option. And they got some bigs,
but you know, is Dante ExHAM as a guard going
to be a difference maker And the answer is no,
play nice, but you need a little bit more Marv.
Speaker 12 (40:59):
Yeah, you saw the difference the Celtics. They had guys
where you can give the ball to Drew Holliday or
Derek White and they can get you off the dribble.
Speaker 3 (41:05):
You know, PJ.
Speaker 12 (41:06):
Washington and Derick Jones Junior, those guys, it was I
have to wait for Luca or Kyrie to pass me
the ball and be a catch and shoot guy.
Speaker 3 (41:13):
And I think that was the big differen especially on
the offensive end. Yeah, yeah, pulling.
Speaker 11 (41:16):
I was looking at some other things with the NBA.
NBA winners like the Oklahoma City Thunder getting a one seed.
Anthe Edwards had a monster year perception wise. You know
it's a sneaky one. Zion Williamson played seventy games this year.
He averaged thirty two minutes a game. Remember at the
start of the season, where like, if this guy can
get sixty games, it'd be a win. And I know
he's not a superstar on the court, but he averaged
(41:37):
twenty three, six and six and most importantly played seventy
games thirty two minutes a game.
Speaker 2 (41:43):
Yeah, I think playing seventy games, it's like Anthony Davis.
It's like a younger version of Anthony Davis of wow,
how many.
Speaker 3 (41:49):
Games did he play?
Speaker 2 (41:50):
But they're probably I don't know if they're going to
keep brandon Ingram Like they have a nucleus there, but
I don't know if they're going to be formidable. So
just trying to get guys who are going to stay healthy.
You know, does Dame come back and is he different
next year? What did the Miami Heat do? Is Jimmy
Butler staying there? Did they trade any assets? Can they
(42:11):
get a free agents there? A free agent there? Does
somebody want to play there? Would Kevin Durant be interested
in playing for the Heat? Could you trade for him?
Speaker 7 (42:18):
Like?
Speaker 2 (42:18):
The free agency will be interesting. I don't know if
there'll be a lot of moves. Klay Thompson maybe, But
Paul George, Paul George, I mean it's from LA. You
get more money in LA. Why would you go to Philadelphia?
I mean, I get it, it gets played with him,
beat in Maxie, But I'd rather be in LA playing
for the Clips moving into a new arena.
Speaker 15 (42:41):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (42:42):
Kyle and san Antonio? Hi Kyle, what's on your mind?
Speaker 7 (42:47):
Hi?
Speaker 4 (42:47):
Dan?
Speaker 7 (42:48):
I was just calling.
Speaker 15 (42:48):
You talked about Clyde Drexler.
Speaker 16 (42:50):
I'm a diehard Blazers fan, and I think people sometimes
forget how amazing he is. He took two teams to
the finals by himself with no other Hall of Famers
on there. Maybe if he had one other Hall of Famer,
if they would have won. But secondly, I would like
to say that Derek White, had that game been a
little bit closer, that tooth would be invaluable.
Speaker 3 (43:09):
I'd want to go look for it on the court.
Speaker 2 (43:11):
Wait, what teams did Clyde take without another Hall of
Famer on his team to the finals?
Speaker 4 (43:18):
I believe in nineteen ninety and ninety two when first
loss of the Pistons then lost two Bulls, and I
don't think that there was another Hall of Famer on
those teams.
Speaker 2 (43:28):
Okay, yeah, Clyde was a great player, but you don't
not take Michael Jordan because you have Clyde Drexler. You
try to figure out I mean, if the Celtics had
that philosophy, they never would have taken Jalen Brown. They'd
be like, no, we got our small forward. They took
the best guy available. And you go back to that
draft when Philadelphia traded up to get Markel Folts and
(43:53):
the Celtics dropped down to three and they end up
with Jason Tatum. Brian in Seattle, Hi, Brie, it's on
your mind today?
Speaker 10 (44:02):
Hey Dan? H Yeah, I'm going to ask about Danny Hurly.
Do you think taxes have anything involved with him? Not
taking that Lakers job when you got city, county, state,
federal taxes. I mean, does that factor in at all?
Speaker 2 (44:26):
Well, I think it comes down to a work decision,
not a financial decision. This is a basketball decision that
he made. Now, if you want to go, oh, okay,
is this going to bring it back to similar salary
in Connecticut as opposed to LA. I mean you can
look at it that way. This was a basketball decision.
This was the decision of do we want to move
(44:48):
cross country? We're not LA people, and we're going to
be uprooting everybody. My wife's family's here, my family's here.
We're going to go to Los Angeles? Why what the Lakers?
Speaker 3 (45:00):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (45:02):
And I could coach Lebron? Okay, and I could make
three times or twice as you know, much money with
the Lakers.
Speaker 7 (45:09):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (45:10):
It comes back to take the money out of it.
Do you want to go to Los Angeles? Do you
want to coach the Lakers and Lebron? Or do you
want to stay at Connecticut. That's why I think it
was a basketball decision. It was a family decision more
than anything else. Rich in San Antonio, Hi, Rich, what's
on your mind?
Speaker 4 (45:27):
Hey?
Speaker 11 (45:27):
Dan?
Speaker 15 (45:28):
I appreciate you calling me for the first time. Yeah,
six ' five three hundred. I just wanted to say
that I am all things Texas, but I was pulling
for the MAVs. But I really enjoyed watching guys like
Tatum Brown Holiday especially Al Horford winning their championship, and
(45:52):
I really I stayed up late watching them celebrate with
their families and it was really nice to see. And
I would also like to add, what would you think
about the Spurs with Wemby's and they've got some young
talent like Missell and Johnson bringing in somebody like Klay
Thompson or or Chris Paul to try to, you know,
(46:15):
tutor some of the young guys.
Speaker 2 (46:17):
Well, I thought that Chris Paul could have ended up
there last year. He didn't fit with Golden State. You're
still paying him thirty million dollars. Do I want Chris
Paul with wem Banyama. I don't know how much you
can play Chris Paul, Klay Thompson. I get that maybe,
(46:39):
but you need a point guard. They gotta have a
point guard. If you watch the Spurs play, which I did,
a point guard would have put Victor wm Banyama in
better positions. He was always out of position first half
of the season, like you would see him do things
that were amazing, And I kept thinking, basketball is all
(46:59):
about position.
Speaker 3 (47:00):
Where are you?
Speaker 2 (47:01):
Where's your defender? Do I have an advantage? How do
I get an advantage? And that's where you have a
good point guard who will put you in position. He'll
find you, he'll get you the ball in the right
place at the right time. And it didn't feel like
san Antonio had that. But Chris Paul, I mean, I
Kyle Lowry was somebody I thought would have made sense
(47:22):
for them, Like, I think I need somebody a little
bit younger than Chris Paul.
Speaker 11 (47:27):
Is it everybody?
Speaker 3 (47:30):
Pretty much? Pretty much?
Speaker 2 (47:33):
Jake from State Farm could be his son. I think, yes, Marva, Yeah,
Chris Paul. People forget he's Lebron's age. They were in
the same high school class. Is he thirty nine, Yeah,
he turned thirty nine a month ago. Yeah, he went
to college for a couple of years. So yeah, it
makes it seem like he's younger than he actually is. No, no, no,
(47:54):
he's he looks young.
Speaker 3 (47:56):
He does very much. He looks young. Yeah.
Speaker 11 (47:58):
Lebron turns for December thirtieth.
Speaker 3 (48:01):
Yeah, yeah, same day as Tiger Woods. That's true. That
same year though.
Speaker 2 (48:07):
Well, when you're looking at birthdays like of greatest player,
greatest athletes on a certain birthday, that that would probably
be up there.
Speaker 3 (48:17):
Tiger and Lebron. Now I got Emmitt Smith, George Brett,
John Smoltz, Hall of Famers. Yeah, yeah, and those guys too,
Hall of Famers.
Speaker 7 (48:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (48:32):
I wonder who what what birth date has had the
most stars on it all the time? Great icons, Jess Paul.
Speaker 11 (48:38):
I'm gonna throw this in for December thirtieth. You got
Lebron James, Yeah, Tiger Woods, Sandy Kofax, whole school. I
thought Bo Diddley, not sports, but legend in his industry. Yeah,
Patty Smith, the singer.
Speaker 3 (48:56):
Yeah, because the night. I I think we just have
to keep it to athletes, Okay, athletic I'll.
Speaker 11 (49:04):
