Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Good morning to you Dan Patrick Show, Fox Sports Radio.
iHeartRadio app. Welcome in Hope. You're doing great with Dan.
Byrom Doug Gottlieb. This is the Dan Patrick Show on
Fox Sports Radio, fifth of July. I think Dan's back
next week. Is that right? I don't manage his schedule.
I think Dan and the Dan atser back next week.

(00:26):
Like two weeks off and they're back. It's it's something
I don't usually do, Like I'm bad at taking time off.
But one reason is because when you get back, especially
doing sports radio, like you want to talk about all
this stuff, like have your takes, like you're good. Everybody's
moved on. Dan is back. That's good, dance back. So

(00:47):
he'll be back, and so the Dan Nets. John Hollander
is going to join a senior NBA columnist for The Athletic.
He's a former executive with the Grizzlies. We'll get his
sense on some of this player movement we've seen in
NBA free agency and who's actually gotten better because of it.
Well might even meal sneaking a little WNBA discussion this hour.
But here's the question that Dan Byer you posed to

(01:10):
me this morning. I woke up and I looked at
my cell phone and I'm on Central time here in
Green Bay. Obviously they're in West Coast time, so getting up,
you know, it sounds like I did yeoman's work getting
up at like five o'clock. But you know, it's not
that big a deal. It's three o'clock your guys time.
You sent a text last night and you asked a really,
really good question about buying a jersey.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Right, yes, And the answer I think is much more
nuanced than what it would appear on the surface. But
Lebron James actually finished second in jersey sales in the
NBA this past season. Only Steph Curry's jersey was more
popular than Lebron, so even though Lebron's been with the
Lakers for a while, still selling. But if you were

(01:52):
to buy a Lakers jersey at this point, would you
buy Lebron's twenty three or would you purchase Bronni James's
number nine with the James Junior on the back of
the jersey? And I think it is going to be
a wildly popular jersey, not only amongst Laker fans, but

(02:14):
I think amongst basketball fans as well.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
You think so, is that the reason for giving him
a four year contract, like, hey, we're gonna have to
make this im.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
I don't think that that's the reason for it, but
I think that now we are at that point we
know he's gonna wear Number nine may not be as
creative as connect four like Dald Kenneck's going to wear,
which is popular. But I just think if you're if
if you're a younger person and you're looking to wear
a cool jersey or a unique jersey, like buying a

(02:48):
Lebron Lakers jersey, takes a couple of hurdles, especially if
you're a casual sports fan, because it's like the Lakers
aren't a casual.

Speaker 4 (02:57):
Sports team, just like buying a Yankees JR.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Hera a Cowboys jersey isn't just something that you naturally
naturally do. But to be able to have it be
Bronni and not Lebron, possibly the greatest player of all time,
I think it makes it much more palpable to do so,
so even the people who normally wouldn't buy a Lakers
jersey actually may be more apt to buy one because

(03:23):
it's Bronnie James.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
I don't know. I think I think there'll be a
run on them early on, and then I think, I
don't see myself going I don't. I don't see it
being a big seller after year one. I just don't.

Speaker 5 (03:43):
We had this discussion earlier this week on the Doug
Gottlieb Show, and I threw out to you guys because
I actually I think I made the statement that drafting
Bronni will put butts in the seats, like figuratively, it'll
raise the interest among Laker fans to see these two
play together. And both of you were kind of down
on that. You said, I don't think he'll put butts

(04:05):
in the seats. So how does this compare to that?
What is the Why would his jersey be more popular
than just the general interest of the club.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
I think there's people that think he's really good. I
just do. I think there's people that think the world
is full of haters and anybody who said anything negative
about him as a hater, and they don't under they
think that college basketball is not an appropriate gauge for
the only thing I can think of.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
I think it's different for a couple of reasons. Number one,
you're just making a one off purchase tuning in night
after night. If LEBRONI is with the NBA team or
however it is, is much more time consuming and much
more invested, even though it may not be monetarily being invested.
This is also of I just want to look cool

(04:55):
like it was.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
But that is that cool wearing his jersey like I think,
Don't Connects jersey is cooler. I think Austin Reeves jersey
is cooler, you know. And it's not like there's not
other historic Lakers like a Kobe jersey is still the
most popular jersey.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Sure, but would you would? I mean, from what you're saying,
I think I know your answer. But I I even
posed this yesterday when when I was on the network
with Aaron Torres and the crew were here, and I
I just asked, would you buy a Bronni James or
Anthony Davis jersey? And while most of them were would
have bought a lebron one, when I brought up Anthony Davis,

(05:35):
they were like, hmm, they weren't too short. And you're
the in your one Doug that has said that Lebron
hasn't fully been embraced by the Lakers or by Laker fans,
I should say, And so now you have a younger
version of this that I think. I think the the
youth portion of it. I think the James Junior is unique.

(05:58):
I think it gives you a bit of a hass
and purchasing. I was shocked to see when I went
to a Super Bowl how many Patriots jerseys were just
of Tom Brady. It was if there were twenty jerseys,
nineteen of them were Brady's. There was maybe a Gronk
here or an Edelman there, and it was all. It
was all Brady Brady, Brady Brady. And I thought, well,

(06:21):
if Brady's been there for twenty years, how do you
not have a Tom Brady jersey?

Speaker 4 (06:25):
Right?

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Like?

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Why would you buy one again? And I was surprised
that Steph Curry and Lebron were one and two, considering well,
if you have a Steph Curry jersey, you've already you know,
probably got it unless you're buying the City Connect or
a different one. But those names are still popular, and
I think the name James will carry quite a bit
of weight.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Oh, I think it carries quite a bit of weight.
I agree with you, there'll be a run on him selling.
I'll just tell you what basketball people are talking about
is we can't wait to see summer League. Can't wait
because look, he has to play. I think one of
the things that everyone's wondering is are they really going
to leave him up on the big club when you

(07:05):
can't play him, Like, look, it's hard to play normal rookies,
lottery picks struggle. Are going to struggle this year to
get legit minutes. The Lakers, they're not They don't appear
to be a championship caliber team at this point in time,
but they're a playoff caliber team. So you're not just
going to play a kid, any kid like Dalton Connect.

(07:27):
I don't know how many minutes he gets, sure, right,
like he's Austin Reeves.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Backup, you know, I'll say one, just one thing about
the summer league thing, and I know Jason wants to
add something else. We've already seen banners of Summer League.
In the two faces. I saw a banner that somebody
posted online that had four faces on for Summer League.
One was Jalen Bronson and one was Victor Wan Binyama

(07:51):
because they played in Summer League. And you're like, okay,
let's let's you know, make note of this. But the
other two faces, it wasn't you know, Reza sh and Sar.
It was Sara and Bronnie James. Of course those were
the two faces. So you know there's gonna be something
to it. And I would think that you would see
some Laker you know, jerseys and you know, pumping up
that hype a little bit more.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
The Lakers own Vegas, Like Vegas is a Lakers town.
You know, they always played a preseason game there. Remember
Kobe had that incredible dunk. I think it was against
the Kings. Right, it's kind of the hub. It's the
hub for sort of all basketball in the summer, but
especially West Coast basketball in the summer.

Speaker 5 (08:32):
Yeah, I remember the Lonzo ball summer. That was a
big one. Sure, I'm gonna make an analogy that's going
to make a lot of people uncomfortable here, and I
apologize to any listener that's uncomfortable, but bear with me
on this. I think Bronni Bronnie's summer league coming up
is a lot like Joe Biden sitting down with George
Stephanopolis tonight. And this is what I'm talking about. You know,

(08:54):
the Democrats need this guy to be the alert president
that leads the United States. They need him to perform
well tonight. He's also in a situation that might very
much expose him and end his presidency. I think, Brownie,
the more you play him, if he's exposed in Summer League,

(09:19):
then that like first week, you know, Asia Adrian or
Janowski said that he's going to play the first week,
That first week is going to be even more of
a side show because we're all gonna know that he
doesn't really belong in the NBA and that the Lakers
just did all of this as an exercise.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
Well so so as the I pretty much think I'm
the only guy in the history of national sports radio
to actually have played for the Lakers in Summer League?

Speaker 6 (09:45):
Right?

Speaker 2 (09:45):
Is there anybody else whose hosted shows played in Summer
League confirm? I can't tell you.

Speaker 4 (09:53):
I can tell you I did not play for the Lakers.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Okay, good, I just I didn't like I didn't Wikipedia
it's not always accurate. I don't know Colin had that. Colin,
you know, claims to have been a star center for
his small school. Uh, well, he definitely it definitely would
have been videoed and put on his ig if he
did so anyway we tease because we love just I do.

(10:22):
Do people understand what that environment is like. Look to me,
if you go against if you go against other rookies
like you, you have a little bit of a chance
because they don't know what you're there doing and you
know what you're doing. If if you're checking up one
with an NBA veterans, you have no chance to guard
them to play because they've played in the league. They

(10:42):
know how how everything works. It's sort of unfair, right,
Like you'll look those bottom guys in the roster that
are played one year in the league, they come out
and they all they all have great summer leagues. Why
because it's you know how it all works. And when
you're going against veteran dudes, there grown men that have
played real basketball, and they are there they want to

(11:03):
make a name for themselves. Like you're not just playing
for the club. You're playing for every big European club
is there, Every NBA team is there. Forget about the fans,
don't actually matter. The TV that's gonna cover it doesn't
actually matter. Like all of those guys they're auditioning for
twenty nine other jobs and the fifty other jobs playing overseas,

(11:25):
so every possession matters, and like the Ronnie James just
I have yet to see it. In his senior year
in high school. There wasn't one game he took over,
not once. Okay, there wasn't. There wasn't anything spectacular they
had the he had the one game I think with

(11:46):
decent stats against Oregon State when they're up twenty on
the road. But there's just not a lot there there. Now,
can you just play and survive? And I don't want
to say when I say the word hide, like this
is kind of how I was kind of surviving early
on in the NBA Summer League run. And I think

(12:06):
they only get to play like six or seven games
or something. It's not not a ton of games. But yeah,
like within the NBA, like you can pass, you can move,
you can actually be fine and survive and you know,
play in the corners, just shoot the ball and like
you don't have to have a great stat line not
play enough minutes. The difference is when you're the second
round pick, traditionally they're gonna start you, they're gonna promote,

(12:30):
you're gonna play a ton of minutes, and you can't
hide when you play that many minutes because you're going
against somebody else's either second round pick or somebody else's
you know, second year pro who needs to needs to play.
And when you get to the playing the twenty to
five to thirty minutes, it's really hard to hide. It

(12:50):
just is. Anyone can look decent. You know, you play
ten minutes and you can. You can definitely find ways
to hide offensively where you're just in ther you let
other people run actions. You just kind of move the ball,
you don't even look at. It's fine, heay defensively, you know,
you can kind of deny your guy the ball so
he does so you don't get exposed. But if you

(13:10):
play elongated minutes like you're, you're gonna catch a matchup
with somebody you can't guard, and it's gonna be bad.
I just don't. My guess is that after he'll, if
he plays well in the second or third game, he'll
have some sort of ankle injury in the shut him

(13:31):
down or some sort of you know, growin hip something
just something bothering him and just precautionary measure, we want
to shut him down. Yeah, I mean that's what they
did with Weben Yama last year, even you right his
first game, like he had just got out the plane.
Just at all this media stuff. I remember, you're doing
all this media stuff, you're not actually working out. Now,
you get a couple of workouts with the team and
you get get going. But like the guy, the players

(13:54):
you're playing against are licensed assassins, like some of those
guys that you like, who is this guy? Where has
he been? And they're all coming in trying to make
a name for themselves. So I'm interested in it, and
I look, I reserve the right to be wrong. I
don't think he's a bad basketball player. I don't think

(14:15):
he actually fits in as kind of a blend player,
a guy who can you can stick in the corner.
But you're you're stepping into an environment where there are
greater expectations than just that you're on a team where
they're trying to create. You know, you want to be
a point guard, like that's the whole thing. Well, nobody's
ever playing with the pointud. Let's see if you can
play point guard in this If he can make the

(14:37):
point guard reads, if you can read a ball screen?
I mean, more importantly, can he guard all those guys?
But as for jersey. I'm not buying the I just
I'm not really a jersey. Buy your guy, but that
one feels like I just buy what I do. Think
it's popular for a short time, but it's much like

(14:58):
the scoring recor Lebron said last year when that's done
after they play together and he plays a little bit,
I just I don't think it.

Speaker 3 (15:07):
I'm gonna guarantee he's a top fifteen selling jersey in
the NBA next season.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Ooh, okay, okay, I'm Doug Godaber. He's Dan Byer woring
for Dan the Dan Nets. We'll see what a former
NBA executive thinks about the Lakers taking Brownie in the
second round and giving him for your guaranteed contract. That's next.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
Dan byerlongside him. Doug Gottlieb is The Dan Patrick Show
Fox Sports Radio. Well, while there's been a lull because
NBA finals win short because baseball kind of hard to
move the needle. We haven't had Aaron Rodgers in the States,
let alone changing teams, we have had some NBA movement.

(16:30):
And to help us kind of get a gauge for
what we should be thinking heading into next year, is
a guy who's done it for a living as a
as a former NBA executive. Of course, he's a senior
NBA columnist at The Athletic. He's John Hollinger. He joins
us here on the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. John,
thanks so much for taking time. I don't want to

(16:52):
harp on the brownie thing too much, but how rare
is it for a pick at that number to get
four years guaranteed on a deal.

Speaker 6 (17:03):
Yeah, so it looks like the first two and a
half were guaranteed and then the fourth year is a
player option but excuse me, a team option. But it
is rare for that much of a guarantee. I mean,
he got the same minimum deal that basically the last
two picks in the draft got a year ago. And
there's a reason for a team who is over the

(17:23):
luxury tax line like the Lakers to do that with
a late pick rather than give them the two way.
So that part was actually logical and normal. The extent
of the guarantee was unusual.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
Can he play in the G League with that contract?

Speaker 6 (17:38):
Oh yeah, yeah, he'll spend most of the year there.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
I'm sure when you look at summer league or something
that we were just discussing, how would you handle his
exposure in the games that he's about to play.

Speaker 6 (17:52):
I mean, I think you just got to have him
out there playing like you would any other rookie at
summer league.

Speaker 4 (17:57):
Throw in there, just throw him in.

Speaker 6 (18:00):
Yeah, it's literally, I mean half the guys on the
court are just being thrown in in summer league. It's
it's mostly rookies and non roster players out there, So
I don't even know. I don't know who else is
going to be on their summer league. He might not
even be starting for them. I mean, we'll we'll see. Uh,
just depend depends who else is on the teams. Where

(18:21):
their two ways are. I'm sure they want to, Like
they have two draft picks from last year, I'm sure
gonna be on the team. They have Dalton connect who's
definitely gonna be starting on the summer league team. So
they have other guys they have to get in there too.
But uh, you know, but getting Brownie on the court
and getting a minute, I mean that's what you do
with your your draft picks in summer league. You put
them out there and you kind of it's it's the

(18:43):
first test sort of to see what they need to
be working on over the summer and where their game
is at. So I think it's an important learning process
for team and player.

Speaker 2 (18:55):
What about for JJ Reddick, If if you were advising JJ,
would you advise them to coach summer league to get
some of the some of the coaching reps going.

Speaker 6 (19:04):
Yes, and a lot of first year coaches have done
that exact thing. So I was a little surprised that
he wasn't going to coach summer league.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
Stan Patrick show here on Fox Sports Radio. John Hollingers
is joining us, all right, So give me your sense.
The Paul George move probably the biggest move right just
when you see now Philadelphia and what they're constructing. How
do you think that that that looks to you in reality,
not just on paper, but in reality once we get

(19:34):
to next fall.

Speaker 6 (19:36):
Yeah, in reality, the thing that matters for Philly is
the thing that has always mattered with it, which is
what is Joel Embiid's condition going to be by the
time we get to May. Right, But if they have
a healthy Embiid and now you have Maxi and George
next to him, you probably still need another starting caliber
player or two. Philadelphia actually has a little bit of flexibility.

(20:00):
They have some kind of weird angles to getting into
a trade, uh still with some with like a non
guaranteed contract with Paul Reid that they have and some
other tools. But there I mean, when you clear out
the whole roster to sign a max free agent, the
drawback is the rest of your team is pretty thin,
and that they can do some things to backfill, but

(20:22):
it's probably not going to be quite the same as
some of the other teams they're playing against.

Speaker 3 (20:27):
Where do they Where does Philly now stack up in
the East? I mean, obviously Boston's on top. Nicks have
made moves, but but where do where do you put
them amongst the Milwaukee's, the Indianas and and I guess even.

Speaker 4 (20:39):
The Knicks for that matter.

Speaker 6 (20:41):
Yeah, I think they had fallen behind those teams and
this is the move that lets them full level or
maybe even past them. I mean, Milwaukee is still really
interesting to me. The one thing I was actually talking
to somebody else and who works in the Eastern Conference
about this. The one thing about Milwaukee's playoff is that
Chris Middleton was really good and if he's back to

(21:03):
being close to what he was, and you'd pair that
with Lillard and the honest now you have something to
worry about it a little bit. I mean, Milwaukee has
other issues. They don't have a lot of depth right now.
They haven't done much this offseason, so I'd worry about
them a little bit from that perspective. But the Keith
version of the Bucks is still scary. Indiana is still
a good team. I don't know if they're quite as

(21:23):
good on paper, it's Philly right now. And then the Knicks.
Obviously they lose Hartenstein, but they get Bridges and they
still have one or two other moves likely coming.

Speaker 2 (21:33):
Okay, what about Denver. I don't think anybody spent enough
time talking about Denver. Bruce Brown's exit last year I
thought really hurt them, right bench wasn't nearly as good.
Now you lose KCP, who in of itself not a
great player, but a great fit for what they needed.
What can Denver still do to get that roster back
to being championship level?

Speaker 6 (21:55):
It's tough. They I think they've cheaped out a little
on Nikoli Oaks's prime, to be honest, And it's concerning
because once KCP left, they don't really have any means
to fill his spot now other than internally, and they
just don't have this kind of low key thing about them,

(22:16):
or they just don't have much shooting left at all
now and I don't know where they're going to get it,
and so that's going to make things a lot tougher
for them at the offensive end. And they were never
an amazing defensive team. They beat you with their offense,
and this feels more like an own goal too. Like
Bruce Brown, because of his contract, they had no chance
of bringing him back. But KCP, it would have been

(22:38):
easy for them to They could have had him opt
in at the same number that was already on his
contract and done an extension off of that. It would
have been super easy. And so they just didn't want
to pay him and assume that tax hit. And that's
a tough one to swallow. When you have the greatest
player who will ever wear your franchise's jersey in his
prime right now, you need to max.

Speaker 3 (22:58):
That outsh Now, I feel guilty because they left the
magic out When I was listing Eastern Conference teams, comparing
the Sixers just completely over my head. It's going to
take a while to get back to it. But a
team that we do talk about a lot. Golden State
Warriors have talked about them quite a bit, obviously with
the departure of Klay Thompson.

Speaker 4 (23:15):
But now Buddy Heald is a board.

Speaker 3 (23:18):
How does Heald fill the gap of now Klay Thompson
last Golden State Warriors team.

Speaker 6 (23:24):
I think he's a guy who will play the same
role that they had envisioned for Thompson and accept it more.
Coming off the bench and you know, just being a
guy who kind of fires away off the screens. I
thought that was a good pickup. I thought Kyle Anderson
was a good pickup. I thought the Anthony Melton was
a great pickup. I think Golden State has actually had
a really good offseason. Just the issue is they're not

(23:47):
the team they were. Right, they have one star and
a bunch of pretty good players, and that can get
you somewhere in the West. Like they probably look like
a playoff team again. That look a little better than
they did a year ago to me certainly, But for
them to ever get back to that place they were
in twenty two or during the Durant years, that's a
really hard sell. At this point, Curry's thirty six, Draymond

(24:09):
Green has declined, Andrew Wiggins was awful last year. Like,
I just don't know where they're getting that second and
third star from. There are some scenarios where they could
still trade for Lowry Marknan, I guess, and they're still
in the in the mix on that and he definitely
helps and pushes them up maybe half a tier. But
when you talk about them playing against a Dallas playing

(24:32):
against an Oklahoma City, I still think they're really short there.

Speaker 2 (24:36):
John Hollins, you joined us. Of course, he was a
former executive with the Memphis Grizzlies. You can read his
work in the Athletic. He's kind of spend some time
with you on the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports
Ready with Dan Byram, Doug Gottlieb. Okay, So you mentioned
Oklahoma City and instead of going out and getting a
second star to go with, shake gild As Alexander like,
I don't even think it's Jaylen Williams. I think the
expectations are that Chet Holmgren in year three, but year

(24:59):
two playing he takes that step and I love the additions.
You know, you bring in the perfect backup guard and
the perfect backup big am. I wrong though, that that's
Oklahoma City's plan. Is why add somebody which could delay
the growth of Chet instead allow him to grow into
it more of a star status.

Speaker 6 (25:19):
I think that's a lot of the plan. Yes, I
think Heart and Stein was the best player they could
get with the free agent money they had because they
didn't quite have a MAX unless they had thrown some
other guys overboard, which I don't think they wanted to do,
and so they were able to do the Caruso trade,
which I think really helped Josh Getty was the piece
that clearly didn't sit there and they were able to
get value for him. That was really important. Caruso is

(25:42):
an awesome defensive player to get Hartenstein is another really
good defensive player and a good rebounder on a team
that was awful on the glass. So I think that
really helps them. So I still think they need one
more guy and the perimeter who can create his own shot.
I thought that hurt them in the Dallas series last
and that's that's the one weakness that's sticking out there.

(26:03):
But I don't know how anyone scores on this team now,
though like they may. They may just be so awesome
defensively that it doesn't matter.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
I agree with you on on all fronts. Let's circle
back to Lakers where we started. Okay, instead of talking
about Broun, what else can they do? Because right now
it's essentially the same roster as last year, with a
different coach, but a year older for Lebron and last
year Anthony Davis, no catastrophic, no major injuries, Lebron, no

(26:30):
major injuries. The chances of that happening aren't great with
lebronze age, Anthony Davis's injury history, what else can they add?

Speaker 6 (26:39):
The thing that it seems like they've been really reluctant
to do is trade multiple first round picks to bring
in another high level star. You know, there have been
discussion that they might go after Trey Young or somebody
like that in the spring, and that just that never
came to fruition. So they're trying to work more around
the edges, and they've kind of failed at every turn.

(27:01):
Right they thought they might have a Clay deal, they didn't.
They looked at some other things they weren't able to do.
They're really hurt by their contracts right now because I
think other teams just don't don't want to take on
two years of a Gabe vincident or two years of
a Ruie hot Chimura at the money they're at. And
so with the tax Davern now especially, they don't have

(27:24):
access to their mid left book sception unless they move
on from some of these guys, and so it's hard
for them to make any upgrades on the roster. They're
really in a tight spot in terms of their cap management,
and I think the result is they're a fringe playoffs team. Again,
they're going to be in the playing tournament.

Speaker 2 (27:43):
John, awesome stuff. Your work's outstanding, your knowledge is even better.
I really appreciate you joining us yere on the Dan
Patrick Show.

Speaker 6 (27:49):
Thanks for having you guys.

Speaker 2 (27:51):
All right, that's John Hollinger Wright for the Athletic. Of course,
he's a former executive with the Memphis Grizzlies. So buyer,
does that give you more confidence in your bucks?

Speaker 3 (28:05):
The health of Chris Middleton, the level of play has
never been a question. The health of Chris Middleton is
more of a question than I think they maybe want
to realize.

Speaker 4 (28:18):
But he was right.

Speaker 3 (28:19):
He was great in this series against the Pacers when
Dan got hurt and obviously Giannis wasn't available, Middleton was
great in that scenario. But it's also not just a
three person team, and I just wondered how you would
transition and what certain moves you would make. And there's

(28:40):
still pieces there. They're just they're old, doug like they are.
And I think you're just wanting to get, you know,
a little bit more out of Middleton if he can
stay healthy, and hopefully Dame's in better shape, as he
admitted that he needed to be in and Yannis.

Speaker 4 (28:54):
Now it's the other thing with Giannis.

Speaker 3 (28:56):
It's not to the embiid level by any means, but
it's been and a couple of injuries now over the
last couple of years that Giannis has been either hurting
the playoffs or has dealt with an injury in the playoffs.
And is that gonna be a thing that continues because
last year against the Heat, he was he was hurt
in twenty twenty one when they ended up winning the title,

(29:18):
remember he went down with that knee injury against the Hawks.
So it's three out of the last four that he's
been dinged up and they're not going anywhere if he's not.

Speaker 2 (29:26):
You know, one, let's go to Let's go to the
Let's go to the Bird. As our good friend Elijah
Elijah Black, of course handles all of our digital stuff,
I like this this tweet. This is This goes back
on a conversation we were having in regards to Bronnie
James and the popularity of his jersey. This is ad
Gotlieb show. That's the Twitter handle for my Twitter handle.

(29:47):
You guys are under selling the father's son jersey thing.
A lot of people support the move of Lebron getting
his son drafted. While I don't share that thought, it's
a great gag Halloween gift idea. Nike just needs to
drop the father son shoe right now. The father son
shoe is great, great marketing. That is awesome. Who would
not buy that for their kid, you know, especially all

(30:08):
these dads that want it so bad for their kid,
and plus you want to wear some cool Nikes. I
get all that. I just I don't know.

Speaker 3 (30:17):
I can't tell if Elijah was being serious or the
Halloween gag thing, because I thought I was over selling it.
Like I literally legitimately think this jersey is going to
be a hot seller in the NBA, and I think
it brings another younger generation in that maybe aren't Lebron guys,
but hey, maybe they like Bronnie James. The bo Benson,

(30:38):
one of our producers here at Fox Sports already in
the hallway, says, if Lebron adds James Senior to the
back of his he would probably buy it just because
it would be the latest jersey as well, because you
don't have one with a senior. There's a lot with this,
but just the Bronny nine and the James Junior. I
think is I think it's going to be wildly popular

(30:59):
in the NBA. I think it'll be like I think
we're going to see the influencers out there, all the
major influencers with tens of millions of followers, the hip
hop artists, the celebrities. I have a feeling that's where
the browny jerseys are gonna appear. And at that point
then it's on. Then you're right down.

Speaker 5 (31:18):
I think it's gonna I think what you have undersold
both of you in this hour is the dad in
Los Angeles right now on a budget who's going to
take his Nick Van Exel jersey and re stencil James
Junior and give it to his son for his birthday.
I think you're underselling that part of the market.

Speaker 2 (31:39):
I would never change I would never deface my Nick
the quick jersey.

Speaker 3 (31:43):
Can I give you the top fifteen in NBA jerseys
this past season? Tell me how many are really striking?

Speaker 2 (31:51):
And now remember there's there's a reason like the lebron
one did he switch the number this year? When did
he switch that?

Speaker 4 (31:58):
I thought it was after twenty twenty two, So yeah,
it was a couple of years ago.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
And you know, but sometimes there's these guys they changed
the number the jersey changes or for Lebron, who was
also the year which he broke Kareem's record. So again
there's there's some other reasons why why jerseys and I
just point out Lebron. There's other guys. They've changed teams,
that's why they're there, Jersey says, but go ahead, give
me the give me okay.

Speaker 3 (32:19):
So the top five Curry won, Lebron two, Jason Tatum
was third, Victor Webbin Yama fourth, Yannis was fifth, and
that this was April.

Speaker 4 (32:29):
This is so this is from the regular season.

Speaker 3 (32:31):
Those were the top five for top five, like Giannis Tatum,
probably because the Celtics won. But I don't know how
much staying power. Giannis has six through ten, where Luca
Devin Booker was seven, Kevin Durant eight, Damian Lillard nine,
Tyrese Maxi ten.

Speaker 2 (32:51):
So Damian Little was nine on a new team.

Speaker 3 (32:54):
Yes, and I don't think that increases. I would say
Luca maybe increases, maybe tyrees, Maxie increases. I would be
shocked if Devin Booker and Kevin Durant were higher up
in the rankings.

Speaker 2 (33:05):
Yeah, I'd say Jalen Brown will probably creep in there.

Speaker 3 (33:07):
Yeah, and then here's eleven to fifteen, John Morant, Joel Embiid,
Nikola Jokic, LaMelo Ball, Jalen Brunson.

Speaker 2 (33:16):
Okay, Jalen Brunson's will will rise. I would also say,
is Trey Young's don in there?

Speaker 4 (33:21):
No, was not in the top selling for this past year.

Speaker 2 (33:25):
Yeah, that's interesting. Anthony Edwards is gonna skyrocket.

Speaker 4 (33:30):
Up right, sure any doubt?

Speaker 3 (33:32):
Which also the top telling is the top selling team
in merchandise for the NBA this past season was the
Los Angeles Lakers, so that plays a part. If Bronny
was a member of the Wizards, I don't think he's
top fifteen, but the Lakers, the James Junior obviously just

(33:54):
being low.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
There's also there's no other rookies coming in that anybody
is clamoring for. Yes, I would say Webbin Yama will
potentially grow here because not growth as if he grows physically,
we're all in big trouble.

Speaker 4 (34:09):
I didn't think he has.

Speaker 3 (34:10):
By some of the pictures of seen online for playing
for France, he's just enormous.

Speaker 2 (34:18):
Yeah, now he's bigger, He's he's way more than three
inches taller than Rudy Gobert in that picture.

Speaker 4 (34:24):
I think that. I think John Morant, the jam.

Speaker 2 (34:27):
Bran's numbers are go up because he wasn't playing, And
I think I'm so popular, you think it gonna go down.

Speaker 5 (34:33):
Yeah, I think if you put a gun to my head,
I'll buy it. I have a I have a correction. Uh,
Doug was right. This is rarely the case when we
do a show. It's usually Dan is right. But Doug
was right. Lebron wore number six for the previous two
seasons until this past season when he changed it back
to number twenty three. Now, remember there was a big change,

(34:56):
right Bill Russell's number was retired. He wore it the
year that Bill Russell passed. He wore it as a
tribute to Russell, and then changed to twenty three for
this past season.

Speaker 4 (35:06):
So, Doug, you were right. Oh that's right, because then somebody.

Speaker 2 (35:09):
Yell that's like that's the old artificial artificial bumps up
those numbers, because like you don't when we go in
and wear jersey, like, oh the numbers changed, you know.

Speaker 3 (35:23):
So it was last week on the show the guy
called me an absolute idiot. I think clown was also
used when I forgot that number six was retired because
they brought up maybe Brody would wear six, but they
were probably all appropriate depictions.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
No, I would, I would, I would. I would say
that honestly, you're you're guilty of the worst crime anybody
can ever commit. You know way too much about way
too many things that occasionally a number may slip or
whatever like that, and you're like, okay, sorry. You know,
like Dan, you've literally forgotten more and most people ever

(36:01):
know in their life. So that I wouldn't that idiot
is an idiot. I'm Doug Gottlibe's Dan Byer. We're in
for Dan the Dan Nettes today. Jason Stewart with the
kind of line of the day, right, John Moran put
a gun in my head, always sitting on that one.
It's always a solid one, solid one. Come up next?
Are we really doing this? Do we want to do

(36:21):
the WNBA grades? At the halfway point, I'll tell you
the only WNB game. Oh, it's a game, it's a game.
We'll do it next.

Speaker 1 (36:30):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app, Doug.

Speaker 2 (36:40):
Golly, Dan Byron and for Dan and Danettes and the
Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Welcome in. I hope you had a great and healthy
and safe fourth July. Getting ready for a good weekend
as well. Dan, you want to continue these sports letdowns? Right?
Are we doing the sports letdown?

Speaker 3 (36:56):
Yeah, it's just because it's tough day for July fifth,
because it comes on the heels of July fourth. But
we do need to quickly clarify something before we get
to the final round of our game. Jason Stewart mentioned
something earlier and people are not thinking I'm saying those things.
Did you want to say something, Jason? I know it's
not it's not your aspect of it.

Speaker 5 (37:18):
But earlier in the hour, I made an analogy that
Bronnie James. By the way, Bronnie James playing in the
Summer League is a lot like Joe Biden are sitting
president tonight. In the interview with George Sheepanopolos, he's basically
interviewing for his job. That's not in California Boxing box ball, right,
says keep up with that MAGA stuff. That's not a

(37:41):
maga talking point. I've heard Democratic sympathizers this week say
that he might be replaced by the vice president and
an open election might ensue, or an open you know,
preliminary election. So that's not a maga talk that. That's
that's all I wanted to say. I just wanted Jason Stewart.

(38:02):
He was the one who said it, not me. I
take full responsible its opinions.

Speaker 4 (38:07):
On the matter.

Speaker 2 (38:09):
You ready to do this, Yeah, let's do it.

Speaker 6 (38:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (38:13):
Sometimes the voices can be confused and when people aren't
used to.

Speaker 2 (38:16):
But I get it, and there's two voices, and it's
it's Jason all right.

Speaker 3 (38:22):
Final rounds of our I call it the day after
Jason calls it sports letdowns. Final three category, Doug, you
have one point, Jason as one point. Chris Prefet not
only looking to get even, but looking to take over
because this round points are worth two points. Final three categories.
I give you a great sports moment. You guess what

(38:43):
happened the day after to the athlete that completed the
great sports moment. The three categories. This is Darryl and
this is my other brother, Darryl, j Arrol, Jim class
or Clark bar Chris prefets this.

Speaker 5 (39:00):
You get to pick first, all right, I'm gonna take
Clark bar.

Speaker 4 (39:04):
Okay, Clark bar.

Speaker 3 (39:05):
Kaitlyn Clark scored forty nine points on February fifteenth, twenty
twenty four, against Michigan, her highest total collegiately and professionally,
within five points. How many points did Kaitlyn Clark score
in her next game that occurred on February twenty second?

Speaker 2 (39:21):
How bat is Iowa? Sam? Wish she was here there?

Speaker 6 (39:23):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (39:23):
Yeah, I know, And I'm about to screw this up
for I was saying, I'm sorry. How many points did
she have? She had forty nine, forty nine and within okay,
in five points? How many did she score the next seas? Again,
I am completely blind to basketball statistics, So let's say
I will say twenty five points.

Speaker 4 (39:41):
Very good.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
You were one point off twenty four points. But she
shot three of sixteen from three point range. They lost
to Indiana in that game. It was just eight of
twenty six from the floor.

Speaker 5 (39:51):
But it's within five points.

Speaker 4 (39:53):
Yes, you got the two points, all right, Doug.

Speaker 3 (39:55):
To retake the lead, you get the choice of this
is Darryl and this is my other brother Daryl, or
ten class I have.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
To go with this is Darryl's is my other brother, Darryl?
All right, Darrel. That's from Newhart. By the way, again,
things that if you go to Michael Rubin's party and
you're Tom Brady, you could say to somebody and everybody
our age would find hilarious and no one there would.

Speaker 3 (40:16):
Get February seventh, nineteen seventy six, Darryl Sittler scored six
goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Boston Bruins.
The next night, February eighth, nineteen seventy six, how many
goals did Sittler score?

Speaker 4 (40:33):
You have to be within one goal?

Speaker 2 (40:37):
Wait, so he scored how many goals?

Speaker 3 (40:39):
Six goals? Wow, it's the second most, tied for the
second most ever. But he's the most recent to have
six goals in the game, Darryl Sittler in nineteen seventy six.
But the day after, February eighth of seventy six, how
many goals did Sittler have against the Minnesota north Stars back.

Speaker 2 (40:57):
When there Minnesota north Stars. Huh, oh man, this is
a total shot in the dark. I have no idea.
Darryl Sittler goals within one goal oh, within one goal? Yep, Okay,
then I'll go one.

Speaker 4 (41:11):
He went goalless, so you are correct. He did not score,
did get an assist, but did not store that.

Speaker 2 (41:17):
That was all strategy right there.

Speaker 4 (41:19):
All right. Doug is now on top.

Speaker 3 (41:21):
Jason the opportunity to end this right, Jim class, Why
can he end this well?

Speaker 4 (41:27):
Because we're almost done with the show.

Speaker 3 (41:29):
Jim Furick shot fifty eight on August seventh at the
TPC River Highlands in twenty sixteen. The curveball. What did
he shoot the day before? Within four strokes? What did
Jim Furick shoot the day before? He shot a PGA
Tour record fifty eight?

Speaker 4 (41:46):
Oh, I definitely remember this one.

Speaker 5 (41:48):
Sixty seven was sixty seven within four shots?

Speaker 4 (41:51):
That is not correct.

Speaker 3 (41:53):
Yeah, seventy two, fourteen shots, worse than he would do
the next It was, yeah, seventy two, then fifty eight.
Doug Gottlieb, you are the winner of the day after
here on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (42:09):
Well, people suffer that same type of letdown the day
after tomorrow and the next day. Now, don't worry, Dan
is back Monday, so you'll feel a lot better if
you like what we do. Listen to the Doug Gottlieb
Show or download. It's available on podcast for him. In
the meantime, have a safe and happy weekend, Go America.
