Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
I just saw where Snoop Dogg gets to carry the
Olympic torch.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
What's going to light with it?
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Well, that's what I want to say. That would be awesome.
He fired up one and this is ahead of the
opening ceremony, so he'll be one of the torch bearers
carrying the Olympic flame in the final stretch before the
opening ceremony. And fifty two years of age carrying the
torch through the streets of Saint Donie, northern Paris suburb
(00:34):
that's home to the Olympic stadium. And this is the
town's mayor said that on social media.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
I can't wait to watch Snoop Crip walking carrying the
Olympic torch like you thought super Bowl halftime. But so
he's carrying the torch for the Olympics. What a career, Yeah,
what a career. I was just watching yesterday somehow like
about fifteen seconds of Snoop and Martha Stewart stinging the
puppy bowl sure something, and it was like, of course,
(01:03):
this is the career art for both of them.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
But can't you go back to was it Snoop in
Lee Ayacoca, who was the head of Chrysler. Didn't they
do a commercial together? And I thought, what a weird pairing.
But you know, you're trying to have the stodgy, old
white guy and then you have the young rapper here
and we're going to get both demographics here selling cars.
(01:25):
But I thought they did a commercial together.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Yeah, they did, like twenty eleven. Yeah, I mean, what
a career research is if you would have said, when
you know, was it ninety five ninety six? Snoop Dog
is under investigation for murder? I think it was an
actual trial.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Well, wasn't he in prison? I think he was? Was
he in prison? Mark?
Speaker 5 (01:44):
Yeah, he was on not in prison, but he was
in jail for attempted murder.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
He went on trial, Okay, and then you had I
mean there was there was a lot of stuff going on. Yeah,
Sugar Knight's waiting for him. Yah, it's like you're gonna
get out. I mean, there's a whole lot of drama
going on there. And then all of a sudden, you're
sipping on gin and juice, you're laid back and everything
(02:10):
is good, and now you're you're carrying the Olympic Torch.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
She's doing cooking segments with Rachel Ray on a Tuesday.
Speaker 5 (02:18):
Yeah, Mart, he might be the most famous rapper alive.
Like famous, Okay, like you know him. He's got commercials
with everybody, like Eli Manning.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
He's got a commercial with you know, does he have
as many commercials as Peyton Manning does?
Speaker 6 (02:36):
Oh, that's closer to you think?
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Yeah, I know. Is he more famous than Eminem who
now has the number one album in America? He just
knocked Taylor Swift off, So I think Eminem's new album
is number one in the country. I don't know if
is he more He probably not more. More people probably
know Snoop than they do Eminem. Yeah, pull, my kids
(02:58):
know Snoop Dogg is just a personality. They couldn't name
a song or an album or anything, but they are
absolutely aware and they see them all the time on TV.
It's probably a good thing that they don't know any
of his songs.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Jay sometimes listen when I'm not around.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Yeah, probably not a good thing.
Speaker 1 (03:12):

iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
I had a story yesterday. It was in the Washington
Post and the NFL Players Association got together with writers, reporters,
editors from the Washington Post talking about the possibility of
an eighteen game schedule, and I thought, Okay, this is
interesting that it comes out, and a lot of times
this story comes out, so both sides can kind of
(04:50):
gather information here. How is the reaction going to be.
What's the reaction going to be? What are the players
going to say, Owners, coaches, everybody will have an opinion
because now you can bring that up. You're gonna have
columns that are written on this. How can you talk
about player safety? And then you want to add an
eighteen game schedule? I agree, don't tell me about player
(05:14):
safety if you want to add another game here. But
it's going to happen eventually. The question is how do
you fast track this? How do you expedite this? Go
back to the college football playoffs? Remember that mess when
I had the audacity to say, look, they're gonna move
this up a couple of years. Oh, they got a contract, Yeah,
(05:35):
they have a lottery ticket as well. They broke the contract.
As I reported, they were going to break the contract
because they realized how much money would be made if
you had a twelve team playoff. All of a sudden
you start to see numbers. Then all of a sudden,
you go, well, how do we have an addendum to
(05:56):
that contract? How do we break that contract? Are we
going to be waiting until twenty thirty when the collective
Bargaining Agreement is up? I don't think so. But I
did reach out to two sources this morning and they
basically said the same thing. I'll paraphrase some of the
things that I got, and it had to do with posturing.
A lot of posturing going on. Can't go to eighteen until, well,
(06:22):
they ask the players what they want. They can ask
for early negotiations. Now the players, from what I'm told,
it would have to be a massive, massive offer, And
from what I'm told, players generally don't like the idea.
Although I don't know if I believe in that, because
(06:42):
if you can add another paycheck here, the clock is
ticking on how long your career is. But posturing is
the word that I got from two sources on this
that they don't expect anything serious in terms of a
discussion for a while, but it came out yesterday. We
have more than a month month before the season starts.
Camp has opened up, so now you have a topic.
(07:04):
Now you can ask a question. Hey, you want to
go to Jets camp. You don't want to ask about
Aaron Rodgers' Egyptian vacation. You can ask him about an
eighteen game schedule or the San Francisco forty nine ers.
Instead of asking about Brandon Ayuk, you're gonna ask about
what about an eighteen game schedule? Who's the player rep
(07:26):
for these teams? And asking them what they think it's
going to happen. The question is does it happen before
the collective Bargaining Agreement expires in twenty thirty. I would
say they'll probably expedite this and that they'll have Now
I ask, okay, do you have to break a contract?
(07:46):
They said, you can have an addendum to a contract.
But this is a story that's there. We're not going
to be surprised that they go to eighteen. When we
got to seventeen, I was told you know we're going
to eighteen. The question is when we're going to eighteen.
It's on a question of if. But when it's just
like the college football playoffs four teams, Hey, what if
(08:06):
we had twelve? What if we actually use the bowl
games that the bowl games would actually mean more? How
about this where you would go the Orange Bowl winner
is going to play in the Sugar Bowl. So now
we're going to watch the Orange Bowl instead of just
all that game and it doesn't mean anything, and everybody
goes away with some nice parting gifts. You've got to
follow the money here. That's what's going on in college athletics.
(08:30):
It's all about the money. In the NFL, they they're
the standard bearer. It's all about money. Remember college football
was going to eight and I said, no, no, no,
they're going to twelve. They're going to twelve because they
did the math. The NFL, the NFL Players Association, they've
done the math. They know an extra game. Now what's
that going to mean? What's that going to mean for
(08:52):
the networks? Does somebody bid even more? It comes down
to the money aspect, what do the players get, what
are the players want? And then how many more games
are going to be international games, because when we went
to seventeen, I was told this makes it so much
easier to say to an owner, we're going to have
that game in another country. We're going to let you
(09:15):
have that. Whether it's Germany or it's Brazil. You can
have your fan base, you can have your game there,
and you know it's a home away from home game.
You're going to be able to set up your merchandise.
That's going to be your other city, your other country.
And the owners of course love that because it's once
(09:36):
again all about money, all right. Eight seven seven three
DP show email address dpat Danpatrick dot com, Twitter handle
at DP show. Some Olympic events do begin today opening
ceremonies or Fridays. You have soccer and rugby. I think
surfing is in Tahaiti. Whoa, I think they're doing surfing
in ta Heati, not in Paris. No, it would be
(09:58):
kind of tough to do surfing in Pa but Tahiti.
So they have soccer and rugby. They have to kind
of play yes time.
Speaker 10 (10:06):
Is that insulting or is that just because of the
scheduling They have to do that before the opening ceremony
even begins. That there's games underway.
Speaker 6 (10:12):
Something seems wrong with that.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Well, I think there's more matches, more games. They have
to spread it out a little bit more. You have
to be fair to the athletes. But I mean, it's
kind of like when you go to the OSCARS luncheon
and then somebody gets their Academy award at the luncheon.
They don't even get that later that night, you know,
during the you know, the awards ceremony. Paul Schemes pitched
(10:34):
great again last night, got his first career loss standing
ovation in Pittsburgh. NFL training camps are open and the
forty nine ers offered Bill Belichick a coaching gig. Okay
got my attention with that, you know, the Niners dealing
with Brandon Ayuk and then apparently Kyle Shanahan reached down
to Bill Belichick and said, any job you want, we'll
(10:57):
have that clip from him. Come up here in a
little bit. Seton what is the poll question today or
at least what were we going to go with first hour? Yeah,
we got a couple that were kicking around. We could
start with the NFL adding an eighteenth game. Do you
feel like that's going to be within the next two
years or post two years, I would say post two years,
(11:20):
it'll be like three or more. Yes, well, okay, so
won't be this season twenty four. They wouldn't do it
in twenty five. I don't think. No, I don't know.
I don't know if you could kind of. I don't
know the logistics of trying to get an eighteen game
schedule and how that works out with stadiums and bye
(11:42):
weeks and travel and do.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
You think it has more to do with bye weeks
and travel or who's going to pay the most to
get that?
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Oh, it could be that too, because if I'm the NFL,
I want to keep it out there and just say, hey,
who's interested. Who would like to pony up extra money
for a football game or two? Remember when Peacock spent
over one hundred million dollars for a playoff game and
people said, why would you do that? Oh, you're gonna
(12:09):
lose viewership.
Speaker 6 (12:11):
It was a.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
Smash hit for Peacock. Smash hit. This is what Amazon.
I mean, you're gonna have all of these streaming services
go hey, I'll pony up the money there. That's what
the NFL wants. Yes, will it be while we're doing
this show. Yes, I would say by twenty twenty seven.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
So twenty five, twenty twenty six, is it the end
of twenty twenty seven or going into twenty two.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Going into twenty twenty seven. How's that? So we would
be here until Christmas Eve of twenty twenty seven. They
would have an eighteen game schedule.
Speaker 4 (12:45):
So this would be your your calling it quit going
into twenty twenty eight.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
It would be just before twenty twenty eight. Yes, right, yes, so.
Speaker 4 (12:52):
We would have that twenty twenty seven fall. Yes, of
possibly this eighteenth game.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
We would have probably what fifteen games maybe during that season? Interesting? Yeah, yes,
for our.
Speaker 10 (13:07):
Last super Bowl Week could be President's Week of Shows
for an unprecedented time of the year, like third week
of February. We could be doing our last super Bowl
Week of shows.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
No, we'll be off the air.
Speaker 10 (13:19):
But if it's I thought it's the twenty six season
into and games of played, the super Bowls played in
twenty seven.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
I'm retiring December twenty fourth to twenty twenty seven.
Speaker 10 (13:29):
Right, so we couldn't do a Super Bowl Week show
in twenty twenty eight. But I thought it was the
twenty sixth season and we would do super Bowl week
February of twenty twenty seven. Well, you're still not retired
for ten months.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Yet I might retire right now.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
Understandable most likely to cause you to retire.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
God, am I.
Speaker 10 (13:49):
Doing the mathrom If it's the twenty twenty six season,
the Super Bowls played in twenty twenty seven.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Better it'll be twenty twenty seven season.
Speaker 10 (13:56):
I thought I thought it was a twenty twenty six sies.
They could do it as early as that possible.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
No, I said twenty twenty seven, and I'm retiring into it.
Speaker 10 (14:03):
Yeah, then that would not factor into what I'm saying.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
For twenty seven twenty twenty six.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
Eight times its weekend, And.
Speaker 10 (14:11):
Well, I can't get this done in the next two years.
We'd have to take at least three years for them
to I'm.
Speaker 8 (14:15):
Just just asked me.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
I don't know, just trying to do a poll question
like I'm supposed to do.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
Let's have very fast tracked.
Speaker 10 (14:20):
If it's gonna take at least three years to get
this figure.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
Out, it's supposed to be twenty thirty thirty.
Speaker 10 (14:25):
Compared to that, it's faster.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
Then to be twenty thirty one by the time they
enacted this. So that would be a little faster very well.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio wapp.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
I mentioned Charles Barkley kind enough to join us. He
put out a statement kind of saying goodbye to TNT
this upcoming season and the NBA moving on as well.
Charles joining us on the program tough to read that
I could. I could feel the hurt in your voice there,
So how you feel now?
Speaker 11 (15:06):
I just feel sadness for the people I work with.
You know, a lot of people, a lot of great
people gonna lose their job. You know, Dan, I've been
with these guys for twenty four years. You seen there,
You see them have kids, you see them graduate high school,
you see them graduate college. So it's just a sad
day for everybody at TNT. I just feel sadness. I'm
(15:29):
not worried about me, Shaq, Kenny and Ernie, but I'm
really concerned about the people behind the scenes because you
know then, and what's really awkward about it, we got
one more year, so these guys are gonna have to
be like, wait a minute, I know I'm gonna get
fired in a year. What do I do do I
look for other opportunities that might dry up in a year.
(15:52):
So that what really sucks for the people behind the scenes.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
How did we get to this point?
Speaker 6 (15:59):
Money?
Speaker 11 (16:00):
The money's just gotten gotten so astronomical, and the owners
want they need this money to pay these players, and
the fans are a big loser, but they need this
money to pay the players. I'm then I was telling
some friends of mine, you know how old I am.
(16:21):
I remember the first time an NBA player that made
a million dollars. We were going around the locker room
high five in each other and I'm talking like I'm
in hey. Then I'm in the locker room with Doctor
J Moses, Maurice Cheats, Andrew Tony, Clement Johnson, all these guys.
Speaker 6 (16:34):
We're like, we can't And this was like eighty six,
eighty seven.
Speaker 11 (16:38):
I think the first time an NBA player made a
million dollars, we were highly like, we can't believe it.
And now a million dollars, that's pretty them.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Your boss at TNT probably didn't help the cause when
he said that we don't need the NBA. So I
wonder what the priority was with the like we wanted,
but we wanted at a certain price.
Speaker 11 (17:05):
Yeah, there's not a lot of talk about that. To
be honest with you, did they have something to do
with it? Not really, because we did say we would
match so so yeah, but they didn't give us an opportunity.
What I really think happened was because they bought it
another partner. This was a last ditch cash grab by
(17:26):
the NBA and the players. That's why I think they
signed an eleven year deal. Say they're like, hey, let's
get as much money as we possibly can right now.
This is gonna be our last bite of the apple
because T and T ABCSPN they're not gonna pay more
money going forward. That's why I think they're like, hey,
(17:49):
you know what, let's get in bed.
Speaker 6 (17:51):
And I don't. I'm not blameause I love Adam. I
love Adam.
Speaker 11 (17:54):
Hey let's get in bed with the streaming because that's
what they're They're going to be the only people who
can afford us in eleven years. That's just my honest opinion.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
All right, So what are you gonna do when this
upcoming season is over?
Speaker 11 (18:09):
You know, my intention right now is to retire. So Dan,
I've never said this before. What I'll share with you
because you know, I got a lot of love for you.
Speaker 6 (18:17):
So my deal.
Speaker 11 (18:19):
There's been a lot of numbers thrown around about my deal,
which I always find fascinating, but I've never told people
exactly what my deal was. So my deal is ten years,
two hundred and ten million dollars. We're in next year'll
be year three. Turner has to come to me today
(18:40):
or next week and say, hey, we screwed up? Will
you take a pay cut? And so they either gonna
have to guarantee the whole ten years to ten or
they're gonna have to make ask me to take a
pay cut, which under no circumstances am I taking a
(19:04):
pay cut.
Speaker 6 (19:05):
Zero chances of me taking a pay cut.
Speaker 11 (19:09):
So then I'll be I must say I'm gonna politely
decline taking a pay cut because tnt' has been great
to me, And they gonna have to say we're gonna
guarantee the hold two ten or Charles Wade Barkley is
going to be a free agent after next year. So
(19:29):
it's going to be a very interesting next few days.
But that's the way my deal. I structured my contract.
They wanted me I was like, wait, if y'all lose
the NBA, why should I get screwed? I said that
it's like, well, let's make a let's come to some
type of agreement.
Speaker 6 (19:44):
I said.
Speaker 11 (19:45):
The agreement is, OHI we get to make you an offer.
I said, that's fine. I'm gonna turn it down because
I'm not taking no pay cut because y'all screwed up.
Speaker 6 (19:54):
And uh so that's where we're at.
Speaker 11 (19:56):
DAN. So apparently unless they, like I say, they can,
but I don't see them guaranteeing it to be honest,
because they don't really have anything. So I think I'm
gonna be a free agent next summer, and I'm gonna
have to sit back and, like I say, right now,
I'm not trying to be this or this or this
right now, my intention is to retire because then, I mean,
you've done it quite a few times, and Fairness went
(20:17):
to another network started over. I'm not sure. I love
T and T so much and the people here. I
don't know if I want to go to another network.
Like I'll never say never, but right now my intention
is to stay to Less and go out with a bang.
We're gonna give everything we got next year because out
of lowty to the NBA and their fans, And I
want to say to something all the.
Speaker 6 (20:37):
Fans out there, Man, you guys been great. You guys
been great to me.
Speaker 11 (20:42):
Uh you know when I was in Tahoo a couple
of weeks ago, everybody saying, guys, don't go us to
do We don't want to go, but we're going. Hey
in first of all, I me say this, this is
like the worst kept secret in the history of course broadcasting.
Like we knew we were done like five six months ago.
They're like, well, we're still alive. We're still alive. Like, yo, man,
(21:04):
please stop lying to us. We know it's over. Just
go ahead and announce it. So there is a sense
of relief, to be honest with you, to the employees,
because I've been spend a lot of time with employees
lately and they just wanted it to be over because
they got to start planning for their future.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
Yeah, but why can't you guys still do your show?
If I'm Amazon, why wouldn't Amazon say why don't we
capitalize on the best you know, pregame show that there
is out there and bring you guys in. Keep everybody
in Atlanta, keep all the producers and you guys, you know,
just produce your show.
Speaker 11 (21:42):
Well, first of all, you have to ask Ernie that,
because Ernie is the guy who probably would never leave Turner.
But Dan, everything's on the table.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
Have you has somebody spoken to Amazon?
Speaker 6 (21:55):
I have spoken to all three networks.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
So you spoke to Amazon.
Speaker 6 (22:00):
Spoke to all three networks, so.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
You spoke to Amazon.
Speaker 11 (22:04):
I have spoke to all three networks. Dan, who got
the NBA going forward?
Speaker 2 (22:08):
I know Amazon? Amazon is where you.
Speaker 11 (22:12):
Let me say this, I have spoken for the last
three months. I've spoken to all the networks.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
That doesn't sound like somebody who's gonna retire.
Speaker 11 (22:24):
Well, Dan, I'm gonna listen. I'm gonna listen. I mean,
first of all, I'd be stupid not to take their call.
But the beauty of this situation I don't have to
make any decisions for a year, Dan, But I told
all three networks. Hey, I'm honored, I'm flattered that y'all
want to talk to me. But let's see what happens
(22:45):
in a year. So that's the great thing about it.
From my perspective, I don't have to make any decisions
for a year. But like I say, my intention I'm
not trying to play hardball. I'm not trying to get attention.
My attention right now is to retire. Like I say,
(23:06):
Ernie would never go to another network. I have not
talked to Kenny and Shack, but I have listened to everybody,
and like I say, I got a year, Dan, I
ain't got to worry about this. All this stuff is
just knowing for a year.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
To be honest with you, Okay, would you go someplace
without Ernie or without let's say Shaq and Kenny. Let's
say Ernie is not leaving, staying TNT Atlanta. Would you
on your own go to another network to be part
of their NBA broadcast.
Speaker 6 (23:39):
I'm not frozen. I'm thinking that's a great question.
Speaker 11 (23:45):
Dan. I don't know how to answer that question. You know,
I ain't gonna never lie to you. I don't know
how to answer that question right now because I don't know.
Speaker 6 (23:56):
First of all, I don't know who's got what going forward.
Speaker 11 (24:00):
Like when I had these conversations with these companies, They're like,
we're finalizing what we're going to have. So I would
have to sit back, Hey, ESPN, tell me what you
guys got and what you want me to do. Amazon,
tell me what you got and what you want me
to do. NBC, tell me what you got and what
you want me to do until they finalize what they got,
(24:23):
because there was rumors when we were like, we're going
to lose the COMF even if we retain the NBA,
we're gonna lose a day of the week. We're going
to lose the conference finals every other year. So when
I talk to these companies, I said, get back to
me when you know what you got.
Speaker 2 (24:45):
That's fair. Amazon's got the money, though.
Speaker 11 (24:51):
Then everybody's got money. They're paying two billion dollars a year.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
No, Amazon's got money.

I don't listen to Amazon. I'm not that stupid.
