Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Welcome to the program. It's our one on
this Thursday. Gangs all here. We got football coming up tonight,
including Dion and the Buffaloes against North Dakota State. Don't
sleep on that one. By the way, the line was ten,
now down to nine and a half. North Dakota State
(00:21):
getting nine and a half.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Coming up a little bit, we'll talk to former Cowboys
head coach Jason Garrett talks in baseball with Tom Berducci.
A little bit later on as well. Steelers finally got
a round naming Russell Wilson their starter, and the only
team left is the Patriots. Marvin just said to me
moments ago, Patriots have named their starting quarterback. How about
(00:45):
we play guess who the Patriots have named as their
starting quarterback? Game?
Speaker 3 (00:51):
All right, everybody, I'm your host, Wink Martindale. Hey, I'm here.
We're gonna play name that starting quarterback for the Patriots. Okay,
you know what. We're gonna start up with our producer,
Holly Paps.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Okay, Paul, a lot of pressure. I'm gonna go right
with my first answer. Jacoby Brissette. All right, Todd it
won't be May in September Brissette.
Speaker 5 (01:11):
See, I'm going with Brissette as well.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
I'm going to go, well, that's so fun if we
all go Bresett. Unless we're all wrong, I'm going Drake May.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Oh okay, you know what, let's hear from the man himself, Gerrodmeo.
We have decided, or I have decided that Jacoby Brissette
will be our starting quarterback this season. Now I'm saying
that as an organization, we're one hundred percent behind Jacoby.
Speaker 6 (01:40):
There is no you know, you got a guy right here,
you got a guy right there. We're one hundred percent
behind Jacoby. And I had an opportunity to talk to Drake.
I had an opportunity to talk to Jacoby separately and
also together, and I feel like we're all on the
same page from an organizational perspective.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
All Right, it's not exciting, but it is smart. I
agree with it. And the only thing I thought was
when he got banged up the last game on Sunday night,
if the shoulder was banged up where he couldn't play,
then Drake May was going to play. But it felt
like that's the cautionary tale here, and certainly with the
(02:18):
lack of talent skill position talent. I would go with
Jacoby Brissette as well. And yes, you're going to be
all in on Jacoby Brissette until you're not all in
on Jacoby Brissette, because that's how it works. It's just
like it feels like the media is waiting for Justin
Fields to take over for Russell Wilson. Russ is going
to be your starter. In fact, here's Mike Tomlin finally
(02:40):
getting around to making the announcement.
Speaker 7 (02:42):
I met with both quarterbacks here just a few minutes
ago after practice, and I informed them that Russ's QB
one going into RIEK one. It was a difficult decision,
but not difficult in a negative way, to be quite
honest with you, It was difficult in a positive way.
The decision was difficult because of what they're capable of doing.
Decision was difficult because of how they've conducted themselves as
(03:04):
opposed to the things that they fall shorty in in
terms of capabilities or negative conduct.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Okay, let's play the which quarterback plays first, Justin Fields
in Pittsburgh or Drake May with the Patriots. Which one
of those quarterbacks will get the starting role, Todd. I'll
start with you, which quarterback of those two starts first.
I think Justin Fields comes in for us first. Okay,
(03:31):
I'm not sure why you delivered it that way, but okay, Seaton.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
It's almost like the Simpsons.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
I'm going Drake May, Drake Many for sure, Marvin Drake May, Paulie.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
I'm gonna call my weekend game Drake May week seven
against Jacksonville.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Oh okay, I'm gonna go Drake May as well. It
feels like the media. I don't know if this is
happening in Pittsburgh, but it feels like nationally we're kind
of going, well, will RUSS make it to Thanksgiving? Russ
had better numbers last year. I know numbers can lie.
Better numbers than Patrick Mahomes did. He had twenty six touchdowns,
(04:11):
eight interceptions. Pittsburgh would kill for that. They would take
that all day, all season. But sometimes those numbers lie.
When did you get those numbers? Were there times when
you were blown out and you put up some decent
numbers there? What did you do in crunch time with
those numbers? But it feels like we're already circling on
(04:32):
the calendar when Justin Fields is taking over for Russ.
It's wishful reporting, is what is happening here. Russ has
had what nine really good seasons, and then he's had
two bad seasons, nine Pro Bowls. Still it feels like, Okay,
Seattle kicked him to the curb, Denver kicked him to
(04:55):
the curb. Well, he must be washed. I'd like to
see how how this goes. You know, obviously with Mike
Tomlin offensive line, I've got questions about you do have
some skilled position players, you got running game, and this
might be just Bruss, go out there and manage the
game for us. We don't need you to be superman,
(05:15):
no herculean task. Just go out there and play. And
let's try not to take sacks and make mistakes. And
that's probably what Mike Tomlin's going to lean on. Let's
be conservative ish. But they've had hard times, you know,
scoring in the preseason. I know it's preseason, but I
would be a little bit concerned, Like you want to
see something in Denver. I got to see bo Nix
(05:38):
lead them. I think he was in for seven drives.
They scored touchdowns on six of them. I like it.
It's better than the alternative. Of seven drives and we
have one touchdown. But all you want to do is
are we headed in the right direction? And it feels
like with that offensive line and some doubt with that,
(05:59):
Justin Field's feels like he'll get a chance to play.
And the question is does Russ give up that opportunity
because he doesn't play well or does he get banged up?
Do they need a spark at some point? Once again,
you're in a division where the last play's team could
win the division this year, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Ravens
(06:20):
will still be good. Cleveland might figure it out, and
they certainly played well last year without Nashaun Watson and
Nick Chubb, so I wouldn't rule them out winning the division.
And then you have Pittsburgh as well, so New England
I certainly understand it. You want to have Drake may
watch a little bit. I didn't think he was ready.
Told he wasn't ready, though he had really good moments.
(06:44):
It's weird he outplayed Jacoby Brissett. But he's not going
to get the job because he's not ready for the job.
And I think what Gerard Mayo is doing as a
rookie head coach let me just go out there with
somebody that I'm familiar with, team's familiar with, and he
knows how to play the position. Not at a high level,
but at a level good enough for what the New
(07:04):
England Patriots are going to be. All Right, good morning

should be all right, Seaton poll question for the first
hour is this the I think we've got a snarky
(07:51):
poll question for the first hour.
Speaker 5 (07:54):
As we often do. Ok, I mean, I'll let you
guess who sent in the snarky, pull to say, Paulie, yet,
now look at you, you're on fire today. Which quarterback
debut are you most interested in? Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers.
We could put on there because last year didn't really count.
(08:14):
Kirk Cousins, m Sam, Darnold Gardner, Minshew, Tom Brady snarky.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Who didn't that coming? Dan Patrick? No, I did not. No.
I kept going, where's the SNAr kit? There it is?
Oh yeah, right there? Oh yeah, yeah, I understand the
question there with with Tom with his debut, Wow, I
(08:45):
really got you on that. I think Brady's going to
do great. I do you know It's it's not about
your knowledge, it's about your ability to do TV. Tom
asked to understand how to do TV. He already has
the knowledge. It's can you get in and out in
fifteen seconds? Can you see what the defense just did
(09:06):
or the offense just did, Get in, get out, explain it,
and then allow your play by play man to come in.
Now that's going to be kind of the synchronicity with
him and Kevin Burkhart is and you get into that flow,
get into the rhythm, and then you understand timing. What
is fifteen seconds. What is you know, eighteen seconds? Hey,
(09:27):
got to get back to the action. Hey, you're going
too long. Somebody's talking in your ear? What are you
telling me? What are you showing me? Breaking down things?
And I think Brady already knows that. It's the ability
to do it in a timely fashion. It's the hardest
thing that I taught analysts when they came to Sports
Center or Football Night in America. They don't know how
long thirty seconds is. They don't know how long seventeen
(09:50):
seconds is. When you say, hey, you got to wrap
it up, and you're talking in somebody's ear, the director,
and then they still have to say something on TV
at the same time. There's a lot of moving parts there.
And I think Tom will be great because of the
information that he will impart. I got caught up in
this a long long time ago when Troy Aikman was
(10:12):
first going to do football as an analyst, and I
met with him in Saint Louis. We're at Joe Buck's
golf tournament, and I sat down and did an interview
with him, and I said, can you be critical? And
he said, I don't have to be critical. I have
to do my job. I have to be an analyst here.
It's not you go out of your way to go
(10:33):
you know that team is terrible because there's certain ways
you can say things. And I'm paraphrasing what Troy said
to me. I wondered if marquee players, Hall of Fame
players can be analytically critical when they're looking at a coach,
at a player, at a quarterback, at a team, and
how often you do that because certain players have a
(10:55):
hard time doing that because they got friends in the business.
Your job is to us, Your job is to your audience.
That's the most important thing, not my former teammates. And
that's what I'm curious about with Tom. You know, how
do you go about being critical or how do you
go about analyzing in a way that's going to be
(11:16):
perceived as negative? And that's everything else. I think he'll
be fine, but it's going to be that. Let me
get into the rhythm there the first quarter and that understanding.
It's just like playing the game. You can simulate everything
you want, but you can't simulate because you don't know
what's going to happen. When it happens, now, how do
(11:37):
you react? That'll be the important part. Does Tom tell
us before ahead of time, just like Tony Romo. You know,
you had analysts who kind of got caught up in
they wanted to do what Romo was doing, or maybe
they were told by their bosses, hey, don't be afraid
to be noster damas here. Tell us what might happen here.
And Tony did that, and then Tony felt like stopping
(12:00):
that as much as he used to. I don't know
if Tom Brady's going to be that way. I like
it when they say, hey, there's a blitz coming off
the edge here, Like I like knowing that. Although there
were times when you would have Tony maybe say something
and it didn't happen. Then you're like, uh, jim, I
think they're going to run here and then and they're
(12:21):
back to pass, you know, but you know Romo caught
us off guard. It's like wow. I remember Rich Eisen
saying he saw his audition and said Romo was unbelievable.
I don't know. I know Tom Brady's done some games,
practice games, preseason games. It's just different. I can go
(12:42):
in and rehearse for Football Night in America or an
Olympic broadcast, but it's not the same because it's going
to change right in front of you. Now, how do
you react? Hey, this guy's going to win. They're gonna win.
He's going to be great until he's Aaron Rodgers is
out after four plays. Okay, now what are you doing?
(13:03):
Your job just changed. That's how quickly it happens. Blink
of an eye, something changes. And Tom's ability to be
able to react to that is going to be interesting
to listen to. And I do think that they're going
to show him on TV a lot more than now.
I don't know if this will work with other networks.
I was told, like coming out of commercial break, that
(13:25):
they might establish Tom and Kevin and give them more
camera time because they want to make it seem like
it's not just a voice you're listening to. They want
to have Tom Brady is at that game and you
get to see Tom Brady. He's not going to be
in studio. You want to make it feel like there's
a studio feel out at the game. Now. I don't
(13:46):
know how often they're going to do it, but I
was told they're going to try to incorporate more of
those on camera. You know, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman
do that Collinsworth. Does that with Mike Tarico, did that
with Al Michael's does that with Herbie. I think you're
going to see a lot a lot of that with
Tom Brady. All Right, when we come back, the guy
who had nothing to say at press conferences certainly has
(14:09):
a lot to say on a lot of different shows.
We'll have that story for you coming up. We got
our poll question as well. Your phone calls always welcome

our show.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
What are you doing interrupting our promo? Yeah, it wasn't
talking about you.
Speaker 7 (14:56):
You took those clips totally of context.
Speaker 8 (14:59):
Oh yeah, well after this promo, I'm going to take

Yeing the Man in Green, a classic DP show t
shirt has been updated. It's back for the twenty twenty
fourth season. Go to Danpatrick dot com. You'll see all
of the merchandise we have for you. By the way,
you look at the AFC North last year, Baltimore wins thirteen,
Cleveland wins eleven, Pittsburgh wins ten, Cincinnati wins nine. So
(15:35):
when you say, well the Bengals finished last, did any
Was there any other last place team that won nine
games in their division? The Cincinnati, I think is a
Super Bowl contender, But you got to have to have
a healthy Joe Burrow. And then you got the Jamar
Chase situation. Now, yesterday we played a portion of a
(15:55):
conversation Zach Taylor had with the media as he was
asked about is Jamar ch He's going to play? And
he eventually got around to saying, yes, he's going to
play in week one. Well, he had this to say
after the fact to the media, the.
Speaker 9 (16:10):
Smartest thing for us to do is just keep working
through it, keep taking a day to day again, he's
a he's a huge member of our team, and appreciate
him and look forward getting them back hopefully at some
point soon.
Speaker 10 (16:20):
He's very What.
Speaker 8 (16:21):
You talked to was yesterday that he's your expectation that
he would be here field for.
Speaker 9 (16:25):
I think I probably put my foot in my mouth
speaking too quickly. And it's just again, this is a
day to day situation. We'll just keep seeing it as that.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
So he says he thinks he's going to play, and
then all of a sudden, probably heard from the agent
or the team did like, well, hold on, this is
a negotiation, this is there's stuff going back and forth.
Jamar shows up in cargo shorts, and then all of
a sudden you realize, hmmm, maybe somebody sent a message
to somebody here. Yep, yep, I think he's going to
be there, Yep, he's going to be there. Uh week one,
(16:54):
and then all of a sudden he shows up not practicing.
Then all of a sudden, it's like, yeah, I think
I put my foot in my mouth. He was hopeful
that Jamar Chase is going to be able to play.
All right, we have our poll question, snarky poll question
and recap that seat and some people. If you'd like
to dial us up or just vote on it, you can.
Speaker 5 (17:14):
Yeah, we have which quarterback debut are you most interested in?
I think we'll pair it down a little bit. Yeah
to Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, Kirk Cousins or Tom Brady.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Okay, I would say Aaron Rodgers just because you're playing
against San Francisco that's obviously a very quality opponent right
out of the gate. Does Aaron do they limit the
number of Aaron Rodgers like plays? Like? Can you make
him a little bit more conservative? Are they going to
(17:47):
be conservative with him? I'm curious about that. Just how
good this offense is. And you know you're going against
San Francisco and Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk. We don't
even know if they're playing. I assume they're playing. But
with Brandon Nyuk and I'm looking at the numbers here,
I don't know where Brandon Knyuk will land as far
(18:09):
as financially, because if I look at ce D lamb
Got four years one thirty six, Justin Jefferson four years
one forty. DJ Moore four years one ten. I'm on
Ross Saint Brown four years one twenty. AJ Brown three
years ninety two, Jalen Wadalls three years eighty four million,
(18:30):
Devonte Smith three years seventy five million, Michael Pittman three
for seventy, Calvin Ridley four for ninety two million. I
don't know where Brandon Nyuk fits in. I think he's
a B plus receiver and he might be looking for
a minus money, but I haven't I haven't heard any numbers.
(18:51):
We knew what New England was offering, and he turned
down New England, and then we thought, Pittsburgh, it's just
a you know this is going to happen. The question
is when I still kept hearing the commanders, we're going
to be involved in this. But as it stands now,
he's gonna get fined. I think forty six thousand dollars
a week, I think, or is it a day? I
(19:14):
have no idea. I just know that now you're on
the clock here with the forty nine ers, and you're
gonna get fined. Jamar Chase, he's trying to do what
quarterbacks do, get paid after your third year. But man,
I look at the value Jamar Chase and Joe Burrow
are intertwined. I mean, what he did and how he
(19:35):
did it, and they did it together and got to
the Super Bowl. And if Aaron Donald doesn't sack Joe Burrow,
he's got a wide open Jamar Chase to win the
Super Bowl. I got to lock him up. Do I
think he's justin Jefferson? Maybe not, but I still got
to pay him that kind of money. He's that valuable
(19:56):
to your team. So he's going to get his money.
He's going to get, you know, upwards of thirty five.
I just don't know if Brandon Nayuk is going to
price himself out and go, hey, I want to get
at least thirty two, thirty three, thirty four. And I
don't think. I don't think he's in that category. He's
very good, but he's very good in a very very
(20:19):
good offense. If you're the standalone number one guy, what
kind of numbers are you going to put up? It's
different when you go I got McCaffrey and Debo and Kittle.
Hey I'm open, guys. Now you go and you're going
to be the number one option, then it'll be a
little I think that's why I didn't want to go
to New England, because not that he'd be exposed, but
(20:40):
he would be asked to be putting up you know,
one hundred and twenty five catches, nine touchdowns. You'd be
a little bit different there.
Speaker 4 (20:49):
Yeah, Pauline, it does feel like Ayuk last year had
seventy five catches, thirteen hundred and fifty yards. He was
second the whole league in yards per catch. But I
think what you said is exactly the money situation. They
have too many people to pay, and say San Francisco
they have a balanced offense with kind of a lot
of stars where they soak up a lot of the
money and there's not thirty two million for a guy
with seventy five catches.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Well, you just extended McCaffrey. Trent Williams wants to get paid.
You extended debo. You still got to pay brock perty Bosa.
There's this is one of those you better get it
right and get it right right now, because this is
your window of opportunity. You had a chance last year
you go to the super Bowl. The previous year, Rock
(21:32):
gets hurt against the Eagles. You only get so many
chances here, and then you've got a restructure who gets
paid and who doesn't get paid because somebody, you're going
to get some good players kicked to the curb. Bill Belichick,
who never had anything to say at a press conference,
has had a lot to say. Has apparently has even
more to say because it was just announced. The Breakdown
(21:55):
between Peyton Manning and Bill Belichick, a thirty minute show
that focuses on the Monday night football matchup. It'll premiere Friday,
September sixth, and the first game they're going to preview
the Jets against the forty nine Ers in Week one.
The pairing is great, Like if you want to nerd
(22:16):
out over some football, this is the show for you.
Those two. Manning, by the way, he won eight of
twenty games in his matchup against Belichick and the Patriots,
but they have great respect for one another. The Breakdown
and he's also going to be on the Manning cast
and Peyton is going to keep this lively. Peyton will
(22:36):
poke fun and poke fun at himself. He's also a
contributor featured guest on Pat McAfee's show Every Monday. He's
an analyst on inside the NFL as well, where he's
with Ryan Clark and Chad Ocho Cinco and Chris Long.
He got a lot of jobs. I don't know if
he gets to the point where he's like, I don't
(22:58):
know if I want to go back to coaching. This
pretty good gig.
Speaker 10 (23:01):
You know.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
Bill Cowherd told us that, Hey, I got to the
point where I was I was fine, Like I've been
doing that. He's been at CBS, I think for eighteen years,
seventeen eighteen years, got to see your family, his daughters
got remarried, you know, he had lost his wife. You know,
I'm a Hall of Fame coach. It's that you've got
(23:23):
to get past that hump where you go after like
two years and then you go, I think I'm good.
I think I'm good. Like John Gruden got to that
point where I think I'm good, but then he came back.
See that's the problem is you're like, you know, but
that's that's how they're wired. And Belichick is wired that way.
(23:45):
He can have all these jobs. But if you said
the Giant's job is open, Eagle's job is open, Cowboys
job is open, then what's he do Because he doesn't
make a lot of money. The question is does he
want to go out the way he went out in
New England seventy two years of age? Yeah.
Speaker 4 (24:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (24:08):
The thing about Kobe doing detail right, which it feels
like is going to be similar to what Peyton and
Bill Belichick are doing right, at least we think.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
It wasn't like it said right up front, this show is.
Speaker 5 (24:23):
Meant to inform, not entertain, right, And there was There
was no humor, there were no gimmicks, there were no anything.
It was literally just him talking about the game and
you learned something like it was teaching you the game
of basketball.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
It was awesome. It was so great.
Speaker 5 (24:37):
There were no It wasn't like keep it like, keep
it fun, keep it moving like a typical TV show.
It was just him saying, see right here, he's stepping
this way.
Speaker 2 (24:45):
That's good.
Speaker 5 (24:45):
That means he's going baseline and then you're gonna do this.
You have to react off of that and swing over here.
The reason this play breaks down is because this man
didn't shift over whatever. It was all very dry, but man,
was it fascinating. It was absolutely fascinating. That was twenty eighteen,
but you knew tuning in. Kobe wasn't there to make
(25:05):
you laugh.
Speaker 2 (25:06):
He was there. This was a masterclass. This was somebody
at the top of his profession breaking it down so
you could see what he was seeing. He was going
to teach you the subtle nuances of what made him
one of the greatest players of all time. I'm going
to spot this guy, the way he's handling the ball,
his position, he's not going to be shooting. I can
(25:27):
see where his feed are, like all of these things.
You know that play should have been two feet further out,
or if you're going to roll, make sure you roll
this way. Just small things that I loved because you're
getting in the head of Kobe. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (25:42):
See, that's why I like I think Bill Belichick could
be perfect for that. He doesn't need to be made entertaining,
Like just you're listening to a genius talk about his
best subject. Great, that's awesome. I don't really want to
hear Peton like, you know, my brother Eli can never
make this play because he's too slow. But you know
Cooper could have done that. I don't want any of
that stuff. They do already do a whole broadcast of that.
(26:03):
I just want to hear Peyton be like, this is
what he sees. You know, Well, that's what I thought.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
If Peyton was going to be an analyst, I thought
he would be the best at doing this because I
would have the camera behind the quarterback when he comes
out to call the play, and I would have Peyton
say this is what I'm seeing. This is what I'm
going to do. Hey, I'm gonna this left side over
here is open here. I would want him to be
(26:31):
the quarterback in that offense in that moment, and I
thought that would be awesome to see that in real time,
Peyton taking you right to the line of scrimmage. And
if Belichick is going to chop it up, even with McAfee,
I mean, he's he knew the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line,
like he's going, well, you know, they got this guy
and they got that guy, and then I don't know
(26:52):
about that, but you know, if it's not about the quarterbacks,
about the offensive line, and they got a good running
game and Arthur Smith's good offensive I mean he was.
He was giving you a thesis on it, which I loved,
and I think if you want that, you can get that.
And the fact that It's always been there. He just
chose not to give it to you. Now you pay him.
(27:14):
And Saban's different. Saban had a dry sense of humor.
When he would come on the show, he would have fun.
You could ask him about D's nuts. I mean, Saban
is even more unleashed, and he's got a like a
Verbo commercial that's really good. He's just game day really good.
(27:36):
And just to see that where you don't have to
have your you don't have to measure your words, your
responses when you go to a press conference, when you're
running a football team. He gets to have fun. He
gets a little bit more longitude and latitude. And it's
great to see because you're allowing us to understand what
you think, what you saw, what you feel about a
(27:58):
certain situation, certain team, certain game plan. And that's what
I love about Belichick. There's only so many people. You know.
I've said this before when I asked John McEnroe, I said,
how do you do what you do? And he said,
I don't know. He goes, I don't think about it.
And great athletes don't think when they're doing it. They
(28:19):
think before they get to that, so then it becomes
just reactionary. I don't think Kobe was thinking in the moment.
He had already thought about the moment, and therefore he
knew what to do when it came up. And the
same with Belichick. Belichick that's why he was so good
at adapting, because he was thinking, all right, what do
I need to do? What if they do this? Okay,
(28:41):
we're doing this. That ability to be able to give
you that insight, to me, I mean, that's priceless because
it's hard to get that. We have some really good analysts,
but then you have people go above and beyond. You're like, God,
I never saw that. I'd never even think that, but
they do. Just why differently?
Speaker 4 (29:00):
Yeah, Pauling I went back and found the press release
when they announced details of Kobe Bryant, and it's really
fascinating because they asked Kobe why this Instead of being
an analyst like Shack or Barkley, he goes, I have
zero interest in being a studio analyst or game analyst.
He goes, I'm building myself a studio. I'm gonna sit
there by myself all day looking at tape game tape players,
and then the producers are going to take what I
(29:21):
have and morph it into a show. He goes, I
just like sitting there and watching tape by myself and
taking notes and writing. He goes, I have no interest
in being on a set with a bunch of people.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
And he's you know, he would get the rewind and
then he would play it, and then the rewind and
then the play it, and so once again you're understanding
that he's seeing something. If he said, all right, what
do you see in this play? If I sat down
with him, I might give some pedestrian of comment like, uh, well,
(29:51):
it feels you know they're going to force him. They're
going to force him laught and I know basketball. But
he might be saying, you think that they want to
seem left, but they don't. They know he's going to
come back. It's like I remember when somebody assistant coach
told me about how to approach Manu Ginobili, because I go,
he's going left all the time. He goes, no, no, no,
(30:12):
He thinks he wants you to think he needs to
go left all the time. These guys all know, Okay,
that's my weakness or that's where you think you want
to put me. You want me to go left, and
you know that I'm going to take a jump shot.
If I go right, I'm taking it to the who.
Like just little things where you go. Uh. I never
would have noticed that, but breaking it down and letting
(30:35):
us inside the laboratory, that's awesome. I remember Rodney Harrison
at former Patriot defensive back, and he was working with
us at the Super Bowl and he wasn't full time yet,
and I remember him saying that he noticed when a
tight end was split out a yard further, he knew
(30:57):
it was a pass play. And I think he saw
this with Tony Gonzales, and he said, like the little things,
just little things he goes looking at the pressure linemen
would put on their hands, would tell me if it
was a running play or a passing play. But the
(31:18):
fact that Tony Gonzales, one of the greatest tight ends
of all time, would split out just a little bit,
and he said, we knew that it would be a
passing play as opposed to a running one. And I
was like, dude, I think you just got hired full
time here on Football Night in America, Speaking of which,
Jason Garrett on Football Night in America, former Cowboy head coach,
(31:41):
he'll join us coming up next hour and we'll get
to your phone calls. We got our poll question. We're
going to run down the games college football Big Night tonight,
got college football Friday Night as well, and we'll run
down some of those, of course, highlighted by Colorado hosting
North Dakota State Dion in Company. We'll take break back
after this with our Play of the day.

(33:05):
So early results in the poll question, the snarky pole
question of the quarterbacking debut that you're most interested in
seatone counter.
Speaker 5 (33:14):
Your options are Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, Kirk Cousins, and
Tom Brady. Right now, Russell Wilson is in last place,
unfortunately just ahead of him if Kirk is Kirk COUSINSKA.
So now between the two, who do you think people
are most interested in their debut? Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady?
(33:34):
Aaron Rodgers Aaron Rodgers by landslide, He's got twice as
many votes.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
Easy, Yeah, easy, That's what I thought. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (33:39):
We also put up there who which quarterback plays first?
Drake May or Justin Fields. This one's much closer though.
This is a fifty one forty nine situation. Drake May
or Justin Fields? Want to guess.
Speaker 2 (33:54):
Drake May? Drake May, yes, fifty one percent. If you
look at the second half of this season for the Steelers,
I don't it may not matter who's the quarterback. They
got a really tough schedule, really tough schedule. That's where
if you're going to get a rhythm build up some wins.
(34:14):
You better do it early because that second half is
going to be pretty tough sledding for Pittsburgh. There, I
got a Jeopardy clue for you. It hasn't been on Jeopardy,
but maybe Sports Jeopardy. Here's the clue. Jared Goff, Jordan Love,
Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts the answer.
(34:39):
Who were the quarterbacks who had a worst quarterback rating
than Russell Wilson did last season? Whoa there? You Stall
of the day, Stan to day to day, Stan of
to day. This is the style of the day. Thank you,
(35:03):
Melissa Everidge, Chief Span stat of the Day Braunchy by
Pennini America. All Right, college football tonight, let me see
the sneaky good game. Sneaky good game. That could be
North Carolina and Minnesota. North Carolina giving two to Minnesota.
(35:25):
Now the marquee matchup is Colorado with North Dakota State.
North Dakota State is getting nine and a half. Now,
you do have ranked teams NC State Missouri. Now they're
not facing each other. It's Western Carolina against NC State,
North Carolina, Minnesota. Kansas against lynden Wood, Missouri versus Murray State.
(35:52):
Is this the University of New Hampshire versus UCF. What's
the UNA Do we know that matchup?
Speaker 10 (36:04):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (36:04):
Let me see.
Speaker 4 (36:05):
Uh, they're getting forty and a half. Oh that's yeah,
New Hampshire at UCF. Oh yanks a slap in the face.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
Okay. Those are some of the games tonight led by Colorado.
Well more people are interested in the outcome of that,
even though Minnesota North Carolina that is expected to be
a close game. Not necessarily marquee programs North Carolina more
so than Minnesota, but it's kind of an interesting matchup
out of conference to start the season for those two.
(36:35):
But Colorado is favored by nine and a half. I
even have over unders here for shardor Sanders throwing for
over is over unders three hundred and five and a
half passing yards coming up tonight, and they have Travis
Hunter minus one thirty five. Anytime touchdown score still fallout
(36:58):
from Dion, Uh, the athletic department, the school, the columnist. Now,
you just got to go out and play a good, clean,
solid win. That would do wonders I think for Dion
in company. And then you know the media. If they're
(37:20):
circling and this happens, build you up, tear you down,
and that that'll happen. And Paul Finbaum calling out Dion
a columnist calling out Dion, I mean this happens. Does
it feel a little more personal? Yes? I said that
felt a little more personal. You want to be critical of,
you know, the team's performance, coaching, Yeah, you can do that,
(37:42):
but it felt like that was bordering on a it's
me against you. But this has happened for decades. Columnists,
that's their job. They want you to read their column
If they know that everything you're going to write about
is positive verbal bouquets, you're like, oh, everything's great, rainbows, unicorns,
You're not going to be a successful columnist. There are
(38:05):
times when you have to go I'm going at you,
I'm going at the coach, I'm going at the player,
and uh, you know, the fallout is usually felt resonates.
Show up though, as I was taught a long time ago,
if you have something critical to say, show up, be there.
(38:25):
Let that person have something to say to you. Sometimes
they don't even acknowledge you. I mean that has happened
to me before, But that's okay. I'd rather be there
and they know I'm there if they want to say something,
than great, and hopefully somebody can pick me up off
the floor if they happen to hit me. Let's see
Stringer in Arizona High Stringer.
Speaker 11 (38:46):
Hey, Dan six two five, I'm in a suicide pool
and it's double elimination. And I was wondering what your
thoughts were on. Should I go crazy and pick Minnesota
over the Giants, or the Falcons over the Steelers, or
go safe and take the Bengals over the Patriots.
Speaker 2 (39:07):
Well, see, I can't win here. If I tell you
something and then you advance or you know, you survive.
But then if I tell you, hey, you know what,
I'd take Atlanta over Pittsburgh and then all of a sudden,
you know, your season goes down in flames. I don't
I don't want to do that. Stringer. Does anybody have
a absolutely must win situation where you feel really good
(39:32):
about it? Todd, do you have one for Stringer.
Speaker 3 (39:36):
I'm going to say shockingly that Colorado will definitely win today.
Speaker 2 (39:42):
I think it's the NFL. I'll come back to here
seatan NFL must win, a sure thing, sure thing. Yeah, Paulie,
how about you? Do you got one?
Speaker 4 (40:00):
Yeah, Bengals over Patriots. Real safe first week? Bet, yes, Tod.
Speaker 3 (40:06):
The Bills at home will take care of the Cardinals.
Speaker 5 (40:08):
Bills, Cardinals, Miami over Jacksonville. Feel safe, Marvin, you got one?
Speaker 3 (40:14):
Yeah, got Miami over Jacksonville too.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
Okay? Are any of those? Do they? They sound good
for you? Stringer?
Speaker 1 (40:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (40:21):
Absolutely? The only one I don't love is Miami over Jacksonville.
I think Trevor Lawrence breaks out this year.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
But I'm okay, Well, good luck, Stringer. I'm sorry we
couldn't help you. We weren't prepared for suicide league. That's
you know, where you're just trying to survive each week, Todd.
So you have to pick it, Yeah, but I don't
think you can pick the same team right right?
Speaker 4 (40:50):
Yeah, each week you pick, you pick the team you
think is gonna win, but then they're off the board
for you.
Speaker 2 (40:54):
Okay, all right, that's one hour in the books. Yeah,
Jason Garrett, Football Night in America. Analyst will join us
coming up in about thirty minutes from now. We'll get
to more of your phone calls. Got our poll question today?
Patriots got their quarterback Jacobe Brissett. It's the start against
the Bengals. Steeler's name Russell Wilson Junior. The third as
(41:16):
he starts on the road against Atlanta. One hour in
the books, two more to go, the Minister of Humor,
Fritzie Seaton, Marv Paulie, yours truly, we're back with hour two.
