Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Alrighty, here we go.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
Hot takes, hotcakes, hot dogs. Let's recap twenty twenty three
just to give you a sense of some of the
hot takes that we had, and I think we had
a pretty good season. It was a good year for
hot takes in twenty twenty three. Let me start off
with here's my hot takes from last year. Mike White
(00:27):
will be the starting quarterback for the Dolphins by the
end of the year. Trevor Lawrence will be the league
MVP this year. Now, once again, I wasn't trying to
be accurate as well as much as I was trying
to be hot.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yes, hot take, but to be.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
Fair, those are extremely hot.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Yes, yes, and that's what I was going for it.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
By the way, if you're watching on Peacock, and why
wouldn't you be, I do have the hot take chain
around my neck. This will be placed around somebody else's
neck by the time this segment is over.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Hot Dogs, hot takes, hotcakes.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
How about Paul Paul said this last year with his
hot take.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
My third hot take? All right, Jordan Love of the
Packers will lead the NFC in passing touchdown.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
That's pretty warm. I think did he finish second?
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Second to deck?
Speaker 5 (01:15):
Okay, what were the other two hot takes?
Speaker 4 (01:19):
Oh well, it didn't work out.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
We skipping well, Paul made sure he put mine that
didn't work out. Paul's did work out. That's interesting.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
That's touch.
Speaker 5 (01:32):
My third hot take's competitive.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
Okay, I'll give you my two whifts. Last year, I
had the Colts will be awful and have the first
pick of the draft. I think they won nine games
and Sam Darnold will start a playoff game for the
forty nine ers.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Extremely wrong.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
I had that one as well, Yes, I had, But
then once again I was going for hont part of
the hot of hot take. I you know, it's once again,
you can win this game but lose credibility. But I
lost the game and lost credibility. Here's Todd. Todd's big pick,
hot dogs hot takes. Get your hot takes here.
Speaker 6 (02:12):
Sean Payton will only be able to fix Russell Wilson
so much. Denver finishes nine to seven and one and improvements,
but not enough to make the post Caesars.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
It's not crazy.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
That's like a tepping take.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Yeah, I mean, that's not crazy. Yeah, Seaton O'Connor.
Speaker 5 (02:27):
Todd went with that all goes well nine to seven
and one take tie Twitter Todd's other ones.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
Oh hold on to your hot takes here Trevor Lawrence
starts hot and then fades in December was his Callday
hot take, which means a little bit of both.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
But he did. I think he faded when they lose
five of their last six.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
But Todd was more right, not hot. And then he
also Todd had Bills will win the AFC East, but
not win a playoff game. I'm doing it like Todd.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
Seaton gave you Lamar Jackson would win the MVP, so
that's a big winner. And he also had this.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
To say, I think the Texans are going to be
better this year than people think.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
How much better will the Texans be?
Speaker 5 (03:08):
Six wins, seven wins, eight wins, eight winn eight win Texans?
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Okay ten?
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Okay?
Speaker 7 (03:15):
Ten?
Speaker 2 (03:16):
And what do they win? I believe the wame.
Speaker 5 (03:19):
I believe they did nailed it.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Did you have any other picks in there?
Speaker 8 (03:23):
Did so?
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Lamar Jackson Texans?
Speaker 5 (03:25):
I had the Broncos winning the AFC West's okay, not great.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
All right, but that's still spicy.
Speaker 5 (03:30):
There, Desmond Ritter getting benched.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Marvin had Jared Goff winning the m v P. That's
that's warm. That's hot. Okay, so we're going to start out, AFC.
I need two hot takes from you, Todd. Okay, now
I'm talking hot. If you don't give me what I
consider hot, there are no.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Hot kikes, that's consequences. Yeah, I just you know, you
gotta go out. No, you know what.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
I got names in a hat here. I'm going to
pick who goes first here, Paulie, second, Fritzy third, Marvin Seaton,
you'll go fourth, All go last, Paulie. AFC hot takes.
Speaker 7 (04:17):
Here we go.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
Russell Wilson of the Steelers as opposed to Yep, Russell
Wilson will start a playoff game for the Steelers.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
My second hot take is Will Levis of the Titans,
who win the most Improved Player in the League award
if there is one, which I'm not sure there is.
I think there used to be, but if there was,
he will bonus take.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
You know what, He's going to be so improved they're
going to create the award.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Correct bonus take with Will Levis, He'll lead the AFC
in touchdowns and interceptions.
Speaker 9 (04:53):
Yeah, that's pretty specific. That's big.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
That's called a haunt take. That's a take, that's what
it is. So that's the two in the AFC.
Speaker 6 (05:01):
Yeah, Fritzy, Perhaps it's wishful thinking on my part, but
bow Knicks, who wears number ten, leads the Broncos to
ten wins. As Denver participates in a Roade wild card game,
everyone's got them over under like five and a half
or six and a half wins.
Speaker 9 (05:14):
He gets them to double digit wins as a rookie.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
I think that's I'm gonna say that's warm one with
the same exect.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Take. Yet, this last year, you had a nine to
seven and one last year that was Russell Wilson.
Speaker 10 (05:24):
This veteran that won Super Bowl at Seals, almost won
two in a row.
Speaker 9 (05:27):
This is a rookie bow Knicks.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
No, no, all right, what's your other one?
Speaker 6 (05:31):
After a bad Week five loss at home to the Cowboys,
Mike Tomlin benches Russell Wilson for justin fields that specific game.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Okay, Marvin, all right, So.
Speaker 8 (05:46):
Jeffrey Simmons of the Tennessee Titans will win Defensive Player
of the Year.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Okay, Okay, got my attention.
Speaker 8 (05:54):
And then the New York Jets will go to the
AFC Championship Game.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Okay, alright, Peter Seaton, O'Connor.
Speaker 5 (06:05):
Joe Burrow will be your MVP, and the Colts will
make the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
All right, so mine in the AFC. No, I have
to have hot takes here, Yes, you do.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
The Jets will go to the Super Bowl, Aaron Rodgers
will win MVP.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
WHOA just trump?
Speaker 8 (06:26):
Marvin?
Speaker 2 (06:27):
How about that? How about that? Marvin?
Speaker 8 (06:29):
So they're gonna win the AFC Championship Game?
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Yes, okay, yeah, and Aaron Rodgers MVP. Hot take time
for the NFC. Pauli oh Man, I got a few?
All right, here we go.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
Kyler Murray, Dan of the Cardinals has to be specific,
Kyler Murray. The Cardinals will start a playoff game one
of the worst teams in football last year. Kyler Murray
starts playing. All right, this one, you're gonna give me
a little wiggle room with because this is gonna extend
into January. Feguarre Allas Cowboys will start twenty twenty five
the offseason with no head coach and no quarterback under contract.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Okay, okay, that's.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
Good, that's warm.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Todd that's warm.
Speaker 6 (07:13):
The New York Football Giants were six and eleven and
twenty twenty three. They finished third in the division and
thirteenth in the conference. Daniel Jones and the g Men
will regress further, finishing no better than four to twelve
and one as your tiebreaker last in the NFC East,
one of, if not the worst record in the conference
in the entire league, and they will desperately miss their
services of Saquon Barkley.
Speaker 9 (07:32):
Four twelve and one New York Giant.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Okay, I mean, I don't know what the over under is.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
It's probably five and a half wins for them, so
you have them winning four.
Speaker 10 (07:42):
I don't think a lot of people think the Giants
are gonna have the worst of one of the two,
like worst records in all of the work.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
I'd be curious what they're over under is with wins.
It's probably five and a half. But I think people
are looking at the Giant. I think the Giants will
be a lot better than people think. I do, uh,
Marvin Well, I gotta do much?
Speaker 9 (07:59):
Do I do a second?
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (08:00):
You got another one? I'm sorry that one is so
hot that I kind of counted as too all.
Speaker 9 (08:05):
Right, he rushed for nine hundred and sixty two yards
with six tds.
Speaker 6 (08:08):
Last season, he missed a couple of games, but staying
with the Saquon Barkley theme, I say he will run
for at least fifteen hundred yards and at least ten
touchdowns this season as a member of the Philadelphia Eason.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Okay, they over under six and a half wins for
the GMA.
Speaker 8 (08:23):
Marvin all right, Sam Darnold will make the Pro Bowl.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
Oh game over wowes yep?
Speaker 8 (08:32):
And Raheem Mooors will win NFL Coach of the Year.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
Somebody's got Tampa Bay or Raheem Morris getting fired.
Speaker 8 (08:43):
That Hey, the Atlanta Falcons? You like them? I like them?
They went in the division.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
And oh who had Todd Bowles getting Oh seen ad
Todd Bowles getting fired? Okay, Raheem Morris with the Falcons? Okay, seton.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
Uh, let's see my NFC hot takes. The Dallas Cowboys
will win Super Bowl fifty nine. Okay, that's me and
Paulie are head to head. That is he's got everybody
getting fired. I have them winning.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
That's hot.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (09:09):
And for bonus picks, I have them beating the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
Okay, your MVP Joe Burrow Cowboys Bengals. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (09:15):
And then I have the Panthers will win the NFC South.
Oh wow, that's a big deal. Panthers will win the
NFC South.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
I have the Falcons going to the NFC title game.
Speaker 9 (09:35):
That's crazy.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
Thank you to They will face they they will face
the La Rams in the NFC.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
Titles Golding know where that happens. All right, So, h.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
What is the single hottest take of the past ten minutes?
Speaker 2 (09:58):
You have one that stands out.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
I gotta tell you, Marvin putting Sam Darnold in the
Pro Bowl.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Yeah, it's pretty pretty extreme, pretty warm.
Speaker 9 (10:08):
Panthers winning the division. I know it's a weak division.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
The big that that one's big. Any other one that
stood out there?
Speaker 9 (10:19):
Take one? Barkley fifteen hundred yards and ten touches? Who
said that? That's crazy?
Speaker 11 (10:29):
Is it?
Speaker 2 (10:29):
From nine hundred and sixty to you as to fifteen hundred?
That is crazy?
Speaker 8 (10:32):
Todd Rogers is lunacy.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
Roger's Super Bowl MVP is pretty extreme. Call, Like you
pushed it. You didn't just say they'll make the.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
Jet Super Bowl. Rogers wins the m V pick.
Speaker 8 (10:43):
Yeah, the Cowboys winning the Super Bowls pretty out there too.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
All right?
Speaker 3 (10:49):
So which who had the hottest take? Who gets to
wear the hot take?
Speaker 8 (10:54):
I'm gonna go seating.
Speaker 9 (10:56):
Yeah, Panthers winning their vision is pretty well seat.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
It's the hot taker, Seaton, come over and get your hardware.
It's the hot take special Watson take necklace, sheen, and
it's all your congratulation.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Congratulation.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
You're welcome, And that's how it's done. You guys supplied
the hot takes. I supply the hot cakes and the
hot dogs. Thank you, tod uh Doug in North Carolina? Hi, Doug,
top that.
Speaker 7 (11:35):
Well.
Speaker 12 (11:35):
I have a lukewarm take and a sizzling hot take
for you. The lukewarm take is I think the Steelers
are going to have their first losing season under coach Tomlin.
And the sizzling take is, sometime before the end of
the year, Tom Brady will be renegated back to the studio.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
Wait, what's the what's the second one?
Speaker 12 (11:57):
Hee's Tom Brady will be moved from the booth.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
There's the studio that ain't happening, No chance that's happening.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
But thank you, Doug. How about Dave and San Antonio?
Speaker 7 (12:09):
Hi?
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Dave, what's on your mind? You guys?
Speaker 13 (12:12):
Good morning. This is my second time calling. I don't
know if it ever gets easier being on the phone
with you guys, but I think I got a hot take.
I think Polly was in the right direction about the Cowboys, right,
But I think what Dan said earlier. They trade Dak
at the end of the year, their head coach gets
fired mid season, that goes to the Raiders. The Raiders
(12:34):
give them the first round pick. They also pick up
the second round because their season doesn't go the way
they think it goes. And we all know what happens
after that, right, We get Shadori and Travis Hunter as
first and second round picks of Dallas.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
And then of course Dion has to go and coach
the Cowboys if we're going to complete the triple crown.
Speaker 7 (12:56):
There.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Thank you, Sean and Ohio. Hi Sean, what's on your Hey?
Good morning?
Speaker 7 (13:02):
First time Color five ten one fifty four. Hey, I
think Super Bowl picks the NFC NFC is going to
be Houston Texans. I'm sorry, AFC Houston Texans, NFC Detroit Lions.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
Okay, yeah, and look, I have no real bias or
I'm unbiased. When it comes to making these picks. I
don't play favorites. I don't care. I just want to
get it right. And I have people like, why don't
you like the Texans. It's I don't like the Texans
from the standpoint of they're not surprising people this year
and they have a really tough schedule this year.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
That's all.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
I think Jacksonville's going to win the division. Doesn't mean
I don't like the Texans. I just have to make
a prediction based off what I know. I couldn't care
less if Jacksonville wins the division. But if you're asking
me make a prediction, you know, people get all upset.
Speaker 8 (13:59):
You.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
Oh, you're a Steeler hater. No, I'm not. Oh I
knew you didn't like you know the right. That's not
the case. You know it doesn't matter.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
Yes, boy, that guy almost made the mistake. I just
checked back in the twenty twenty two hot take draft,
I picked the in and outs Coults to win the
NFC title.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
They're not in them. That's okay. That was a hot take.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
If you talk about something that's unlikely.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
To happen, that is a hot take.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Barrett Barrett in North Carolina Hi, Barrett, what's on your mind?
Speaker 2 (14:33):
Gentlemen?
Speaker 14 (14:34):
Uh not calling to defend Frazie today, calling to tell
Fritzy Fracy you need to defend those hotcakes because if
you haven't already, Marvin's coming for them. Because hot tags, gentlemen,
Marvin scared, Ron Tim take hotcakes with this, Hotcakes.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
I think we don't have anything.
Speaker 8 (14:56):
I'll work it out.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Thank you, Barrett.
Speaker 9 (14:58):
Well inebriated or something. I couldn't follow that.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
Wait, that's somebody who's defended you before. All I know
is Marvin scared.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Yeah, why are you scared?
Speaker 8 (15:07):
Because I'm just scared. I don't even know kids are scary.
Sometimes he's a Marvin scared because he sounded like me
with Debo and when you did the thing and you
played pop Warners Syrup and you're scared, You're You're fast, scared,
You're fast.

Speaker 3 (16:02):
Time down for super Bowl picks. I'll go around the room.
Then I'll give you my super Bowl pick. So the
dan nuts have theirs, Todd, I'll start with you. Your
super Bowl pick for this year is.
Speaker 10 (16:12):
You're all gonna be disappointed because it's not very juicy.
But I'm going the forty nine Ers beating the Chiefs.
Speaker 17 (16:17):
Wow.
Speaker 7 (16:18):
That is.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Nah, it's gutsy. Nobody's going out on a limb like
that seatan, Can I ask a question though you just did?
Can I ask multiple questions right now? I have?
Speaker 5 (16:33):
Yesterday one of my.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
Hot takes, Yeah, was a super Bowl pick? Oh so
a legitimate Super Bowl?
Speaker 5 (16:40):
Am I allowed to do a non hot take super
Bowl pick?
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (16:45):
I am sure. I'm going to have the Kansas City
Chiefs beating the Green Bay Packers.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Okay, all right, little rematch Super Bowl one, that's my pick,
all right.
Speaker 8 (16:57):
Two, Marvin, I'm going to have the Buffalo Bills beating
the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
Oh my goodness. Now this isn't the hot take segment.
This is your actual take.
Speaker 8 (17:12):
In real life. It's forty nine ers Chiefs.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
Paulie, your super Bowl pick.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
I have the Houston Texans losing to the Detroit Lions
in the super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
Okay, Yesterday after the show, I wrote down my super
Bowl pick and I left it on Pauli's desk. Now,
I've since changed one of the teams because I haven't
made the super Bowl pick official, and I'm disappointed in myself. Paulie,
(17:52):
if you want to read what my super Bowl pick.
Speaker 4 (17:55):
Was, unfortunately, I want to bring in my ambudsman in
the back.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
Seat, which is the super Bowl pick. The super Bowl
pick is whatever I say on the show.
Speaker 5 (18:05):
So it's not what's on that envelope that you gave to.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Paul No, no, no, maybe okay, depending on how the
super Bowl goes.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
Yeah, see.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
On the sheet on the folded up envelope. Oh man,
before I read it, would you stick with it? You
will go down This will work out well for you
if it works out after that advice, I'm gonna read it.
You have the Lions over the Jets in the Super Bowl. Yeah,
that is a fantastic super Bowl programming wise, I.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
Knew this is what keeps coming back is I said
I never bet against Brady. I'm at the point where
I never bet against my homes and it's right in
front of us. Kansas City, to me, is better this
year than last year. But there's no upside to picking
the Chiefs. Think about yourself, my legacy, my legacy boost
(19:08):
in New York.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
Right about that? Well, Detroit, I do.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
That's what you shall say.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
I'll stay with the Lions over the Jets. How about that?
Speaker 3 (19:32):
I was going to take Kansas City and just because
they're right in front of me and they're as good,
if not better than last year. It just it comes
down to there's luck involved, what kind of injuries are involved.
You know, the NFC North is really really tough division.
You know, now we're talking maybe the Vikings could make
(19:53):
the playoffs. We know Packers are really good. I'm just
hoping the Lions learn from last year how to close
somebody out when they need to. It's a really good team,
you know. That's both sides of the ball, and then
the Jets. I just I feel like it's either going
to be incredible, incredibly great, or incredibly bad. But I
(20:18):
just get the feeling if they won seven games without
a quarterback, They won seven games without Reese Hall being
there for most of the season. So all right, we'll
stay with the Lions over the Jets. Yes, Paul, this
is as to be.
Speaker 4 (20:37):
This would be a top three or four super Bowl
matchup you could put together if you were like the
networker for fan interest Lions Jets. The Lions have a
great story, the Jets have a great futility story. The
Bills would also be in that mix.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Zoom. So that's it. It's done. Yeah, I grind over
this thing thing. Wait you did it?
Speaker 4 (20:58):
Wait, stay with stick with your guns dish.
Speaker 5 (21:02):
Yeah, I did write it down it just stick it
with your guns dish.
Speaker 4 (21:05):
Yes, we're framing this if it works out.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
Okay, and if not, we'll yeah, I'll be framed.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio wapp.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
Is Nancy Lieberman there, Tom Sure? Alrighty, Women's Basketball Hall
of Fame. I'm going to say this, this is going
to sound like I'm, you know, kind of catering to Nance.
Better passer than Caitlyn Clark. Okay, better passer. I've seen
it firsthand, and I'm sure Nancy would you agree? Are
(21:44):
you a better passer than Caitlyn Clark?
Speaker 11 (21:48):
We both did our thing on the basketball court.
Speaker 17 (21:50):
I admire how she pushes the ball up the floor,
her head's up.
Speaker 11 (21:54):
She's seeing her teammates.
Speaker 13 (21:56):
Dan.
Speaker 17 (21:56):
There's been great passers in the history of women's basketball.
Speaker 11 (22:00):
I'm glad to be one of them.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
That's a humble Yes, is what that was.
Speaker 3 (22:06):
Do you know that we played a pickup game in
Dallas and Dion was in the game Ken Norton Junior.
So Nance is running the point and grown men were
getting hit in the side of the head because they
didn't have their head on the swivel. And if you
ever have played a game with Nance, you have to
have your head on the swivel because she will find
the open person. And I remember, Don's out there, Ken
(22:28):
Norton Junior and you're running the point.
Speaker 11 (22:31):
It was fun. We had a lot of fun.
Speaker 17 (22:32):
You know, people don't realize that for those seventeen years
before the WNBA started, I had to play against guys
like you. You know, I had to play for the Lakers,
I had to play for the Jazz, I had to
play in the usbl My daily routine was going to
the downtown YMCA in Dallas and playing against NBA guys.
(22:53):
So you know my skills were sharpened, right, Iron sharpens iron,
and you guys, I would have loved to have those
seventeen years to play against the Tarasis and the Kelsey Plumbs.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
Right yeah, and your nickname, your nickname is Lady Magic,
So you know you were doing things that probably a
lot of a lot of players weren't going back in
the day.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
And then what was it like? You met Muhammad Ali? Right?
Speaker 7 (23:19):
Oh?
Speaker 17 (23:19):
He was my friend and my hero for thirty seven years.
He changed my life. He taught me all the really
the soft skills and the tough skills that I have today.
He taught me to respect everybody, to fear nobody. He
taught me to be an everyday champion. He taught me
about racism, He taught me about philanthropy, taught me about
(23:39):
being an entrepreneur and how how to lift your sport
and I'm grateful that this man was in my life
for all those years and dan like those last ten
or twelve years for me to be with him and
his home in Phoenix and feed him and put his
bib on and hold his hand and just tell him
(23:59):
how great I was for everything that he instilled into
my life.
Speaker 11 (24:04):
And supportive even when I was hired.
Speaker 17 (24:06):
You know, the second female hired in the NBA with
the Sacramento Kings. Second phone call was to the Alis.
He came to my first game in Phoenix. I mean,
he was so supportive of me.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
That's great.
Speaker 3 (24:17):
And one more thing, nance used to play pickup games.
You went to Rutgers Rucker Park.
Speaker 11 (24:21):
Didn't you practically lived in Rutger Park. I love it there.
I would take the A train from far Rock Away.
It was about forty minutes into Manhattan, switched trains.
Speaker 17 (24:35):
I believe it was the E get off at one
hundred and fifty fifth walk into Rutger You know, have
the T shirts in my jacket, so I looked menacing
and the guys would look at me like little girl.
Speaker 11 (24:46):
You know, I was just a little skinny, redheaded kiddo,
and they go, little girl. You lost and I'm like, no,
are you.
Speaker 17 (24:54):
And they're like, do you know this is Rucker Park
And I'm like, yeah, I know, like great people, here
is your name Rutger And they would say no.
Speaker 11 (25:02):
I said good, it ain't your font.
Speaker 17 (25:05):
And I have lifelong friends, guys who protected me, rode
the train with me. Actually, those experiences taught me my
mother not to be racist or judgmental, because it was
his love and kindness and bond with people that didn't
look like me.
Speaker 11 (25:23):
It was amazing.
Speaker 3 (25:24):
Nancy Lieberman Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, You've called a
few WNBA games before I get to Caitlin Clark watching her.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
How would you sum up this WNBA season.
Speaker 17 (25:37):
It's historic, It's amazing, I'm sure, Commissioner, you know, Kathy
Engelbert and Adam Silver and Mark Tatum, everybody are looking
at this and saying, we had hoped that this would happen.
We the players of my generation, had hoped this would happen.
And to see Jesse enormous ratings. I think we're up
(25:59):
like three hundred and forty six percent. Ratings were on
all platforms. Social media has been a part of it.
The players that came out of college, really you know,
brought a lot of their cachet to the w NBA,
and there's a healthy respect for the legends of the
game that are you know, currently playing like the Tarasses
(26:19):
and you know, just you know, like the Tamika Catchings
and the Sue Birds and some of the really great
players that were a part of you know, the last
you know, twenty five plus years.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
All right, you've done a couple of capelin How many
games have you done Caitlyn Clark A couple.
Speaker 11 (26:39):
I went to see her in college. We got to
be friends.
Speaker 17 (26:42):
He won my award, and I promised I'd go see
her play, and I did her last game in Iowa.
I recently did the game in Dallas, the w NBA game.
She's just exceptional, I mean.
Speaker 2 (26:56):
But being treated differently on the court as a ok.
Speaker 17 (27:02):
Well, when you say being treated differently, is the physicality there, well, yes,
of course, if the physicality is there, you know, she
has to earn her stripes. You know, seventeen percent of
all flagrant fouls this year in the w There's been
thirty two as of the other day, and five of
them have been.
Speaker 11 (27:21):
Against Caitlyn Clark.
Speaker 17 (27:23):
But let me say this, she has taken everything that's
come her way, and she's look what the Indiana Fever
have done since the All Star Break. I think they're
seven and one, they've clinched, they're eighteen and sixteen.
Speaker 11 (27:38):
They had not made the playoffs.
Speaker 17 (27:40):
In eight years, and she, you know, Boston and Mitchell
are just crushing it right now. They've got a lot
going on. I give Christie's sides a lot of credit their.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
Coach, okay, but why is she I don't want to
say she's polarizing, but it feels like Caitlin Clark is
controvert for some reason.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
Like, how did we get to this point?
Speaker 11 (28:04):
Uh?
Speaker 17 (28:04):
You know what we got to this point because this
point has happened before.
Speaker 11 (28:08):
You.
Speaker 17 (28:09):
You know well enough that in nineteen eighty four when
Michael Jordan came into the NBA, the ratings in the
NBA were not great.
Speaker 11 (28:15):
Chicago Stadium was, you know, a third full.
Speaker 17 (28:19):
And he comes in from college winning the championship at
North Carolina, and you know, the Jordan rules are in effect.
They're knocking, you know, the heck out of them. He's
getting the lion's here of the attention. The games are
now getting put all of his games are on TV
and He just was a polarizing figure and Tiger Woods
(28:42):
was like that when he went to the PGA as well.
He changed the total economics of golf the same way
Michael Jordan changed the financial economics of the NBA. And
I think with that there's going to be it's human
nature sometimes to have some envy or some jealousy, and
it's happening now to Caitlyn Clark, and there's nothing wrong
(29:05):
with wanting to be a part of that. But everybody
in this league's are part of the success right now,
Angel is you know, we haven't had a chance to
see Cameron Brink, Chrisse, she hurt herself. Rakia Jackson from
Tennessee's amazing. Angel Reese just broke the record, the WNB
record as for rebounding in a single season as a rookie.
Speaker 11 (29:27):
She's been enormous in what she's done. And Camella Cardozo.
Speaker 17 (29:32):
I mean, there's some great young talent along with Caitlyn Clark,
and you know other players wanted to see what you got.
Speaker 11 (29:40):
All right, can you take the next level? You know,
Diana Trassei said it right early.
Speaker 17 (29:44):
She says, you know, these players including Kitlear and come
to the W and they're playing against you know, grown
women who have been at.
Speaker 11 (29:52):
This for a long time.
Speaker 17 (29:54):
It's okay. It's called competitiveness. It's called, you know, a
will to win. And if you have the skill set,
if you're if you're a great player, you're going to
be great no matter what.
Speaker 11 (30:04):
She's a great player. She's not just breaking Caitlyn rookie
records anymore.
Speaker 17 (30:10):
She's breaking W records. Angel Reese isn't just breaking rookie records.
They're breaking W records and you have to respect that.
Speaker 11 (30:20):
But there's also gonna be players that are gonna be
tough on you. That's just the nature of the beast.
Speaker 3 (30:26):
I know. But they're trying to make this a Rookie
of the Year race with Angel Reese, and I said,
just stop. And I'd likened Angel Reese the way she
rebounds to Moses Malone and just offense and defense. She
was just she's relentless. Caitlin Clark is just different. This
is a different stratosphere. Caitlin Clark should be runner up
(30:48):
to Asia Wilson for MVP this season. League value, team value,
playoffs and doing things that we have not seen before
by a rookie.
Speaker 2 (30:59):
Any any problems with any of those comments.
Speaker 11 (31:02):
No, I don't.
Speaker 17 (31:03):
I think she is definitely First, let me let me
just state this, Asia Wilson is the best basketball player
in the world. She's unbelievable and as great as a
Uh she is Asia on the court and the MVP
of the Olympics. Is her motor and her leadership. I mean,
people want to be around her. Kids just adore her.
(31:25):
She's got mega endorsements, her own shoe, a great book
that I believe you know, is a bestseller.
Speaker 11 (31:33):
She She's the.
Speaker 17 (31:34):
Top of whatever list you have, and then you have
a list of other people who are having superior years.
I mean, Ifisa Collier is just having a killer season
right now with Minnesota, uh, they're one of the top
teams in the league that are gonna buy for a championship.
Speaker 11 (31:51):
Cheryl Reives Reeves is a great coach or Olympic coach.
Speaker 3 (31:54):
Uh.
Speaker 17 (31:55):
You know, I look at what Sabrina has done, you know,
uh this season and is her best season, you know,
getting to the rim more not just being you know,
labeled a three point shooter. Caitlin Clark is in that
next grouping under Asier Wilson of players who should be considered.
And look, I know there's people that love Lebron James,
(32:18):
don't like Lebron James, love Michael Jordan, don't like you know,
the competitive who is better, what generation is better?
Speaker 11 (32:26):
You know, you're going to have that. That's just what
sports is.
Speaker 17 (32:29):
But we shouldn't hate on somebody who's actually doing her
job and she's doing it really well an exceeding expectation.
Speaker 11 (32:38):
And a lot of these young players in the league.
Speaker 17 (32:41):
That's why the w is so appealing right now, and
people all it's one of the most rated leagues in
the world, and you know, I'm proud to be a
part of it. I'm proud to see what's happening with
the game.
Speaker 11 (32:55):
And you know, I.
Speaker 17 (32:56):
Hope that the great players in the league right now,
whether it's Breonna Stewart or Collier or you know, Tarasi,
Britney Griner, I want them to continue to shine with
Asia and some of the other players. But these rookies,
they don't want to be labeled rookies. They're ballers. They're
coming after you, They're coming for your job. They want
(33:18):
guaranteed contracts. They want to have long term success and
make a lot of money.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
Great to catch up with you again, Nancy.
Speaker 11 (33:26):
Thank you Dan.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
I think I could still take you on the court.
Speaker 11 (33:29):
You couldn't go left.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
We know what happened when I was on the court.
Nance Hey, you.
Speaker 17 (33:37):
Know what, You're bigger and stronger and better when we
played than I had ever thought. And I did tell
you that you are a legit basketball player at a
high level.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
And I think you said handsome too at the time.
Speaker 11 (33:49):
Absolutely always handsome.
Speaker 3 (33:53):
Just don't want to misquote you. Thank you, Nan, It's
always great to see you. Thank you, Nancy Lieberman.
